Roots

Praise the Lord for hotels with WiFi! We made it to my mom's hometown - Arkadelphia, Arkansas, this evening. It was so fun driving through town and searching for all the landmarks I had written down on my list. We found both of my mom's old houses. I wished for her when we were there because I wanted to know which window was her room and how big the tree in the front yard was when she lived there. It really made me miss my Nanny to see the homes where she raised her family. One of the houses was right across the street from the old high school. Mom and Aunt Gay used to run home during their lunch period and watch As the World Turns with their mom and grandma. Female bonding at its best. We drove down Main Street and saw the building that once housed my grandpa's movie theater. My mom told me that, of course, her dates always wanted to take her there. I pictured my Uncle Tony working at the ticket window as a preteen. Finally, we made our way to the First Baptist Church, where my mom fell in love with Jesus. There were cars outside and it was apparent they were having their Sunday evening activities. I took the opportunity to wander through the halls for a minute and grab a bulletin for a souvenir. I saw that they were about to have some sort of fellowship meal and I kind of wanted to crash the party! A sweet lady greeted me warmly and I thought it must be a very dear church. There was a Cracker Barrel not far from there and it did not disappoint. My only regret is that I didn't buy an Arkansas Razorbacks t-shirt for Jackson in the gift store. My grandparents would have been proud. When we pulled up to our hotel I told Curt that I still can't believe I'm old enough to take random trips like this without getting permission from my parents! I'll be 28 this fall.

I did get to talk to my mom for a few minutes this afternoon. She visited Matthew today. For those of you who don't know his story, Matthew was on his deathbed when she met him and his mother two years ago in a malnutrition clinic. He was starving, malnourished, and dying. By the time he arrived at the clinic, he was too far-gone to be helped. My mom prayed with him and pleaded for his healing. You may have seen footage of it on LIFE Today. God did a HUGE miracle, to the praise of HIS glory, and Matthew was completely restored! My mom said he just turned five years old and was running all over the place today. I know she had a sweet time with his mother, who believed without a doubt that on that day two years ago, God raised Matthew. We serve one awesome God! Be encouraged as you believe Him for your own miracles, sisters!

I loved the trip down memory lane with you as you re-visited your Mom's hometown. I had to laugh as I remembered running home at lunch to watch as the World Turns also. In the summer when I went to spend time with my grandma, my sister and I would make sure we were home at lunch so we wouldn't miss any of the episodes. Sounds like a fun trip. Have fun at camp and will be anxiously awaiting to hear from you and your Mom. So glad they made it safely to Angola and am lifting all of them in prayer daily.

God Bless you,
Carolyn

How fun! We went to Ouachita and attended First Baptist all 4 years. I did my first Beth Moore study there as a college student way back in 1996. I'm glad you got to see all of that, many memories. I even did some practice teaching at that school that use to be the high school, it's now an elementary school I believe.

How fun, have a great trip!

Hey Siestas - I read Amanda's post and felt a curiosity about the name Matthew - so I grabbed my Exhaustive Concordance (and it's so heavy I'm exhausted every time I pick it up -- I know smarter minds than mine have purchased the CD versions of this and can just click on line -- oh well, I'm ten years behind everyone on the technology front) - and I discovered that the name Matthew comes from a word meaning a disciple (no stretch of the imagination there) - but that the root word means "to learn." So, I just prayed over this precious little tike in Africa who was raised back to life by the gracious hand of the Lord, and asked God to cause little Matthew to have an insatiable love of learning about Jesus and, like his first century namesake, would quickly follow Jesus wherever, whenever. (Also, I was interested to discover that, in Greek, this root word "to learn" comes from the word "math". O Lord, thank You we can be disciples and not have to excel at MATH!!!!) Anyway, enough Greek, have a lovely day girls!

Warm in Alaska.

Amanda, Thank you for the posting. Glory to You, Lord Jesus for the glorious healing and testimony of Matthew. You know the names of the other "Matthews" out there who need healing and deliverance from malnutrition and disease, we lift them up and ask You to heal them as well. In Jesus' Name. Amen.

Amanda, It sure sounds like you had such a wonderful time visiting your Mom's hometown, it brought tears of joy to me this morning reading about your trip. I am so glad that you had a chance to do that, how amazing. So glad to hear you were able to talk with your Mom, what a truly amazing thing about Matthew, there are no words, we do serve a mighty awesome God. I will continue to be praying for your whole family during your travels and praying that God moves in such a mighty way through both of your trips. Blessing To You.

I am new here but just had to speak up after reading this beautiful stroll down memory lane. I have done the same thing. I even took my 5 yr old granddaughter back to my home town and showed her each school I attended and all the streets her MeMe walked when I was a wee one. I showed her the old tree on my elementary playground that I led a Bible study beneath. The most incredible journeys led us to her great-great grandparents home, and her great-great granny's home. My mama's house is a landmark in my home town...built in 1903. I then made a photo album for her to keep forever.

Thanks so much for sharing this story with us. My prayers and love go with you and your parents!

It was fun reading about your trip down memory lane. When I was in Nashville last week my sister and I did the same thing. We found our old homes we lived in and other landmarks and places we used to eat at with our friends. It was great to relive those memories. I remember watching the story about Matthew and saw your mom praying over him. I am in awe of God's great Power, Love and Mercy and Miracles!!! Praise God for this little boy. May he fall in love with Jesus and grow strong in the Lord!!

Have a blessed time at camp!!

Don't you love Arkadelphia? I went to college there and was lucky enough to live there for about 3 years before we moved to Colorado.

I got to meet your mom at an LPM event in Hot Springs several years ago. She hosted a special reception for ladies from Arkadelphia and we thought we were oh-so privileged. (And we really were!) One of the senior adult ladies from our church asked your mom if she remembered her son. Without missing a beat, your mom said, "Oh yes ma'am I remember him...he was the first boy I ever kissed." That had us all in stitches!

And thanks for sharing Matthew's story--beautiful!

I'm glad to read an update from your parents' trip. Our God works in wonderful, mysterious and miraculous ways!

May God continue to work miracles not only in the bodies, but more spectacularly in the hearts and minds of the people of Angola. And may He continue His miracles in the hearts and minds of those whom He has called to serve Him there and around the world.

Hi Amanda,

I'm so glad you made it to camp and had a nice time visiting special places. Like you and Pinkmommy I know how it feels to adjust to adult independence with (in my case) very overprotective parents. I took a short but fun roadtrip today. My mom was scared to death of me going alone, but it was the best time I've had in a long time.

I'm so excited to hear about Matthew. Our God is an awesome God!

As always you, Melissa and family are in my prayers.

My grandma lived walking distance from my school and I would often pop-in at lunch and she'd be watching that same soap or "All My Children".....oh the drama and YES!! the female bonding!! What a delightful surprise to hear from you. Your trip through Arkadelphia must have been so much fun. The folks at First Baptist would have had a fit over you especially those who watched your mom grow up. Just imagine the stories they could have shared as they lovingly spoke of your mom. Maybe you will have another chance to go there again soon.

I did see the footage of Michael on Life Today when Beth prayed for him. God answered her pray and raised that little boy to new life. He looked so weak and helpless. God healed Michael and we do praise our Father for His infinite mercy and gift of healing.

You have fun at camp. Can't wait to here from you all when you get home.

Hugs

Gracious!!!!!!!! I half-way grew up in Arkadelphia==Grandma's house was right behind the Sonic on Hwy 7. My cousin went to school at OBU and took me for a walk on Henderson's campus. He told me that if I stood in this one place and yelled, "I WANT TO SEE THE OUACHITA TIGER." that someone would take me there. Of course it was summer time when he did that to me and there wasn't anyone around where I was yelling. I did get to see the Ouachita Tiger but only because I made Paul take me there.

My aunt was a principal in the Elementary schools in Arkadelphia for years. Funny connections.

I LOVE ROAD TRIPS AND REMINISCING! I ran away to Monticello, AR a number of years back...I thought surely God wouldn't find me there he he he. I met the most wonderful people there, made life long friends, and learned some important things...like "Where can I go from your Spirit? Where can I flee from your presence?" (PS 139:7) If I make my bed in the depths of Arkan ... ooops...slightly off track. lol
Anyway, sounds like you are off to a fabulous start on your vacation.

I also watched the Matthew story and bawled, then watched it again as he recovered, and bawled. I didn't bawl this time, but my heart beat pretty hard and I did choke up a bit ... I'll have to remember my kleenex when I watch it on Life Today. What an amazing miracle to experience. I can't wait to hear about the rest of the trip.

I loved your post Amanda. Just recently I went back to the community that I was raised in and took my three girls. I only knew one family still there, but I showed them all the old haunts also. I stopped at the little community church I was raised in and met the pastor and his wife who were very discouraged, but Jesus allowed me to pray over her and the church at the very same altar that I kneeled at years ago. We were up there bringing down the enemy! The LORD had told me a month before that experience that it would be a Gilgal moment for me (me not knowing when that moment would come) and it was! I love that you went where your mom was raised and I love the heritage that accompanies that for your son. Bless that little church and whoever led your mom to the Lord because without even trying (such a God thing) that person blessed thousands of people over the simple obedience of being faithful in sharing the gospel with your sweet mommy. I love you for wanting to go back there and visit that! Hope you have a good time at camp!

Amanda,
Oh how I envy your mom and dad. I just got back from South Africa on a missions trip. I was inspired to go by some things your mom said at the Phoenix Living Proof. The Lord worked amazing things there. I know He will do the same for them in Angola. Africa is such a "school" for us. Of suffering, of compassion, of wealth in poverty. I can't wait to hear stories. If they pass through Cape Town at all on their way back tell them they must go to the top of Table Mountain. It is the perfect devotional spot. I hope you and Curtis get the opportunity to go sometime. It is a remarkable place. Hope you and your family are well. Jackson sure is a cutie.

The Journey Continues ~
Precious Amanda, thank you for sharing your journey to your heritage. Our family has
recently moved to the coast of California. It has been bittersweet. My dear "siesta's" in the valley gave me a farewell luncheon and it was the most difficult time saying "see you later" to my Christian friends Our HUGS & MUGS group ( Homemakers Under God's Service and Mother's Under God's Service) I have prayed with, shared with, laughed and cried with and studied mine and your mother's bible studies together for over 15 years. Although I am lonely for my dear sweet friends, I ALWAYS have JESUS with me! I call HIM alot lately, HE is a great listener!

Praise the Lord, regarding Matthew! Is not our God so loving and good? I am in awe of Him tonight. God spared us today. My babies and I. And I think it is hitting me.

Today could have been so tragic.

Last night, I left the gas turned on our stove-top, with no flame, and did not realize it. ALL NIGHT LONG it pour out gas vapors into our kitchen.

This morning, I still did not know it. I guess the smell was not noticeable enough...we grew accustom to it during the night.

After taking my daughter to preschool, the boys and I returned with an hour before I had to take them to Vacation Bible School.

When we walked back into the house, my little tadpole said, What is that smell. I sniffed and thought...yea, strange, is smells like gas.

Walked around, walked into the kitchen..and saw the burner knob turned on, no flame.

Turned it off, opened all the windows and doors, turned on the ceiling fans.....

Do you know how different this story could have ended? An explosion and no house, while we were gone. Or an explosion and no us, if we had been here. Or a silent, secret, sleeping death?

And it would have all been gone. The dreams and hopes and longings and goals, and growth and hugs and worries and... all of it. Done.

But God.

Yes...But God...God was not done with us...here. He will never be done with us...eternally. But He also was not done with us here, on planet earth.

I do not want to be a tragedy. I do not want my babies to be a tragedy. I do not want me or my babies to be a story that makes someone turn to God and ask WHY??!!!!! I want us each to be a life that makes someone turn to God and say, I want to know you!

Isn't our God awesome and loving?

What a beautiful post. I just recently got back from visiting my grandmother and their home town. Your post touched my heart and encouraged me as I am missing my grandmother and her town today. I am so thankful that God gives us family roots!

Thanks for sharing your "Back to the Future" with the blog siestas.

We all have things--sights, smells, songs--that take us back to a place. I love listening to an 80's radio station and thinking straight back to friends and good times from high school and college.

Blessings!

On my blog today, Amanda, I shared a quote from your mom that comes to my mind often as she related in Beloved Disciple (over a year ago and it keeps popping up in my memory)--- the time when Beth's good friend told her that she was "so glad that Beth was not the John 5:39 kind"--- diligently studying the Scriptures but refusing to go to God for life---her friend said Beth was not studying the Scriptures diligently to find Life but she was living out John 5:40 never neglecting, not refusing, not forgetting to Come to Jesus for Life...what women you all are that you are finding life because you go to God every day and you bring God to all of us and make us want to trust Him, the God who healed little Matthew...Psalm 84:11 says---your God is your Shield, He gives you favor & honor, no "good thing" does He withhold from Amanda... thank you for this precious post about faith and memories and healing...

I just read a quote the other day that said "Earth is the only hell a Christian will ever see, but the only Heaven a nonchristian will ever see." Isn't it wonderful that even in the midst of that glimps of hell on earth God comes in big ways to show His love and glory.

This may not be the correct way to lift up praises to answered prayers re: Mary Byrne Smith but it was the only way I could figure out to!!!
I praise and thank God so very very much for her safe discovery and decision to return to her family. There is no doubt that this was the work of the Lord. The devil comes up with such cunning ways to undermine God's good works---A Pastor's wife, disappearing from a Beth Moore, Bible teacher's conference! Let's pray that God gets the victory and that the world will see God stands by His people when they show how very human they are and especially when they confess, ask forgiveness and return to what is right!!! Let us pray that the bad will be turned to the good as is always the case with our Lord---anger,unforgiveness,disfellowship is not His way!
Love is!!!

Hey Amanda,

We live in Camden, AR on the great Ouachita River, and have visited Arkadelphia many times. Now at age 55 we sometimes ride our Harley through there. I loved reading about your trip down memory lane. South Arkansas is a great place to grow up and I'm so glad your mom found Jesus here. Of, course Jesus is everywhere, but you know what I mean. I was able to attend two Beth Moore LPL events - one in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma and the other in Bossier City, Louisiana. We attended the Satellite broadcast on "Getting out of the Pit" in Magnolia, AR at Central Baptist (don't you just love that town's name? Perfect name for a southern town) I was hoping LPL would come to Little Rock this year, but I don't see it on the 2008 schedule. Maybe next time. Please tell your mom to keep Arkansas in her future plans and maybe we will see ya'll soon!

God Bless,
Cindy

Thank you for that reminder that God is in the miracle making business. I am in need of one myself and believing that our God who healed that little boy, will surely do the same for my family. God bless you.

Amanda,
I am an Arkadelphia girl stuck in Atlanta! Thanks for sharing your trip through town. My husband pastored in Arkadelphia for 10 years before we moved to Atlanta. Your mom's studies really helped me connect with our church here. My ladies here would always ask about places your mom mentioned. In a very real way, I've seen the time your mom lived in Arkadelphia be used in my family's ministry! The very first Living Proof Live event our Atlanta ladies attended was in Birmingham a few years back. They even made a sign for me to hold up that said "Arkadelphia is my home town too!" I, of course, was too shy to hold up the sign in a worship atmosphere, but I keep it in my office as a reminder of how God uses connections in miraculous ways! Thanks for sharing and making me just a little homesick!

She was with a group out of Indiana who worked with HIV/AIDS orphans during their time. Can't wait to read a post or two about your experiences in Angola! Blessings to you! Thank you for the ministry that you do!

Dear Amanda,
My roots are Arkansas too. I just came home to OK yesterday afternoon after a family vacation in Little Rock and on Lake Hamilton. My Mom and Dad drove us around their old stomping grounds and where Daddy bought Moms engagement ring...and where they used to work, bought their first car. I even got to see the old tree where my grandpa hung the clothes line. It has a scar where the tree grew around the line.

Mom showed us where the doctors office was that my great grandmother would call and have an ambulance take her when she had an appointment. (it was around the block)

Our 13 and 6 yo daughters soaked up all the nostalia and my mom was in HOG HEAVEN.

And yes, you should have bought that boy a Razorback Shirt! :)

Dear Amanda,

Thank you for keeping us updated so we can pray specifically for everyone's needs.

I have to tell you that our women's ministry did the Loving Well retreat this weekend and your Mom was showing pictures of Jackson.

We were able to access the LPM Blog so we could show the recent pictures of Jackson for everyone! Everyone thought he was beautiful!

Thank you for being a servant girl!
Love Your Sister and HIS daughter,

Amanda I just discovered The LPM Blog and I thoroughly enjoyed the trip down memory lane. Seeing how I don't live too far from Arkadelphia. I go through there every time I go to Hot Springs. That baby really needed a Hog shirt!!!! Go Razorbacks!!! Anyway, I am about the same age as your mom and not only have I done every Bible study, I have also led them. They have been such life changing experiences for me. Mostly, because I can relate to alot of your mom's experiences. Therefore, they have been great encouragement for me to strengthen my relationship with my LORD!!! Thank you both for sharing!!! In His Love, Dianne
