Forgiven Much

I just got through posting a new devotion about the sinful woman who anointed Jesus' feet at the Pharisee's house. It got me thinking about my own life. I have been both the Pharisee and the sinful woman. When I was a teenager I had a list of things I was told not to do and didn't do. Of course, there were plenty of things on God's list that I was plowing right through, but in my immature tunnel vision I focused on the "big things" that would make me look good and pure in everyone else's eyes. And then after several years of pridefully, loudly, publicly swearing I would never do such-and-such, the Lord (graciously) allowed my will power to fail me. And I had to take a hard look at the depths of my own sinfulness. I learned that given the right circumstance, my flesh is capable of absolutely anything.

Almost ten years after that particular struggle, my profound grief over the fall has been eclipsed by grief over my self-righteousness and pride. I was given four years at my high school to flaunt the love and grace of Christ, to show Christ in me - the hope of glory. Instead, what I flaunted before many of my classmates was will-worship, arrogance, and hypocrisy. My heart breaks when I think about things said, thought, and even prayed during that time. But God was merciful not to leave me as I was. I'm so thankful that there is hope for both the Pharisee and the sinful woman. As my mom says in today's devotion, He can take the broken cistern in that 17-year-old Pharisee's heart, and in that 18-year-old sinful woman's heart - both of whom He deeply and gloriously forgave - and create a wellspring of love for Him.

Amanda, I often think about how much grace God has for me....especially when I really thought I had a clue and I didn't.
I work with juniors in highschool right now and I am so blessed to watch God use these beautiful girls in different ways. I have had them since seventh grade...how amazing it is to see what God does...how He molds, shapes and teaches us. It is encouraging to remember that God always meets us where we are.

Amanda, I can so relate. I grew up in a church that was very legalistic. And I, too, kept my little list of do's and don'ts and thought I was something! Now, many years later and many falls later, I realize my pridefulness. But God has been so tender to show me where I need to change. I know I'm not there yet, and never will be until I see Him face to face. But I thank Him so for His grace, and especially for continuing to show me ways I need to love Him and others more fully and unconditionally. God is good.....All the time!

Amanda, I have been through this same journey - and am still there now, at times. I grieve. I repent. And I receive God's grace anew. I am SO grateful for God's unconditional love and that His mercies are new every morning. Thank you for being transparent. I have been blessed by what you shared.

It's funny that is the topic for today. I have been mulling over 2 women in the Bible myself lately. It was my original goal to be like Mary, the mother of Jesus. No, she wasn't perfect, but I believe she made wise choices and GOD picked her to be the mother of our Savior. Then, there is Rahab. Bless her, for in the midst of her sinful life, she dared hope and believe that GOD could love and forgive, even her. And she is in the lineage of Jesus, too. I have to say that my life relates more to Rahab, and I am thankful that my GOD never grows weary, He is always forgiving, compassionate, and loving. But, I will pray for my daughter to be more like Mary, so that hopefully, she will not go through pit after pit like her mother, and then have to wonder if GOD could still love her or dare use her, even then.

Thanks for being so willing to share that thought. I know that I have been in both of those shoes and the Lord has been faithful to forgive both my sins I thought I would never commit, and my pride for thinking I couldn't. God has been so mericful to me, and in His forgiveness of all my mess, He is showing me how to be merciful to others as He calls us to be. I loved the devotional for today! It is what I needed to hear! The Lord is still speaking to me on this subject...so thanks for your willingness to share! This blog is so fabulous, by the way! Can't wait until your mom comes to Bossier!

Amanda, your story is very much like mine. I too have been on both the Pharisee side and the sinful woman side before. God's forgiveness and grace for both lifestyles is an incredible thing that I can't completely understand, but I sure am glad it's real! Thanks so much for sharing.

Amanda,
I just saw the MOST AWESOME MOVIE last night. It's called "The Last Sin Eater" based on the book by Francine Rivers. If you're not familiar with the story, I highly recommend that you read it. I'm not sure why the movie wasn't promoted much, cuz' it was VERY GOOD! Well, all that to say, I'm reminded again that ONLY GOD can take our sins from us and set us free. No matter what we've done in our lives God is BIG ENOUGH to clean our hearts and make them white as snow. I sure do love Him, don't you?

Love you too,
Kristi

Amanda, I too look back on my high school years with sadness for the missed opportunities. They knew I was different but not why--pretty much just strange. Slowly but surely in His grace, the Lord is setting me free from the things that had me bound so that I never shared Him. I pray that we will all be so full of Him, He can't help but spill out. He is all the hope any of us have.

This is the first time I have ever responded to a blog, but what a day to start.

I have also been "legalistic" and the sinful women and I am still dumbfounded over God's grace to continually forgive me over and over. I know I am not worthy, but lately He has laid it on my heart that the way He has forgiven me is the same way I must forgive those who have offended me. That is quite a daunting task for this Pharisee and sinful woman.

Amanda, your words have really blessed me today, as always. You have a gift for seeing things as they can be through the eyes of Christ, rather than through our own faulty vision. I love your devotions and posts. Another generation, as your mother's devotional charge in Patriarchs. I was so touched by her words when she said, "If you want your children to turn out different, BE different." I think I mentioned that here before, but those words are speaking to me sooo much lately. You bless my heart because I feel like an aunt or family member who has watched you grow up!!! Even though we've never met, we've all come to feel like family! Prayers for you and your sweet baby and husband! I'm cozying in after a big blizzard this morning.... Candlelight, music, and time for gratitude for all God's gifts.

I feel what you are saying, Amanda...in fact, when I first married my husband, he told me I was being a Pharisee about some friends of ours. That caught my attention in a big way!
Not to say I don't slip into those old clothes of self-righteousness, but they don't fit as well as they used to, praise God!
Sometimes I think we get that way out of fear...because deep down, we know what we are capable of, and it scares us...
Yet, all we have to do is submit to His tender mercies and let Him shape us and mold our wills to match His perfect one...easier said that done, though...

I've been reading this blog for a few weeks now and have just decided to join in the posting. This has been such a blessing!!

Wow, it is so true how as soon as I begin to act like a Pharisee, God shows me how I am just like the sinner that I am condemning in my heart. He has been doing great heart surgery on me the last year - painful, but wonderful. Just the other day, I was deep in God's word, praying, memorizing scripture and fasting. When before I knew it I had committed the same error that I had judged a friend of doing and swore I could never do! I cried out to God - why did you let me do that when I have been so faithful to You today? He whispered to my heart that I was being faithful to His decrees, but not to His heart of love. I realize now how close I truly am to everything I judge in others. May God continue to teach me not just His ways, but His heart.

People think that once the "big stuff" is removed from their lives (drugs, sexual immorality etc.)it's all downhill. It wasn't until AFTER God got rid of all of those things that the hard work began. The pride, unforgiveness, control issues etc. were so much more painful to let go of and probably just as destructive as the the "big stuff." The big stuff was just outward manifestations of what was going on inside. It's kind of like kudzu. You can mow it (drugs, sex, alcohol) down all day long, but if you don't pull it out by the root (pride, unforgiveness, control) what good have you done? Am I making a lick of sense?

Amanda, you are a precious angel. You are so very articulate and wise beyond your years.
Growing up as the daughter of a minister, I not only swore "I will never do that" but felt SUCH shame, defeat, and humiliation when the tendencies of my flesh continued to say "yes" even though everything I had ever known said "no", and also came with a list of "why not".

The Lord allowed most of my PIT of lies and poor decisions to be played out in my personal life--a life 100% of my friends never knew existed behind silent, closed doors. My mind was as shackled as they come, and the enemy only tightened the guilt bars each time I realized another opportunity to say "NO" had passed me by.

But PRAISE THE LORD for HE is THE DELIVERER!!!! We truly have nothing good within ourselves without Him. (Ps. 16:2) He has turned my shameful thoughts into humble praise and crazy joy for the redemption and FREEDOM I now have in Christ Jesus!!

as have many others...i have gone through this and revisit every now and then. i do think that personally going through those things makes you even more understanding of others and it makes you even stronger and reliant on HIM. you often have more compassion and less judgement.

we realize that sometimes a person may say they are a chrisitan, but their actions may show otherwise. we can understand what they may be struggling with something and know that they may be praying and asking God to help them be the person HE wants them to be...not the one that is evident to others. we can say this because we have been there too!

God's grace is amamzing. I was just reading that devotional after a hard day at work today. It deal with the opposite problem of Pride. I have so much self hate, which is just as big a problem as Pride because it can hold you back form God just as much and not let you experience all He has to offer. I pray that one day I will learn to look at myself and love myself, but for now it is one more pit I am trying to climb out of.

I wondered what the phrase meant, the one about how she loved much because she was forgiven much? Did she love Jesus because she was forgiven by him? Was the woman grateful to Jesus for the fact that he loved her despite her sins? Because Jesus didn't condemn her? Because she was free to love? The pharisee felt superior because of who he was, yet he had no love.
Thats pretty interesting. The pharisee didnt know forgiveness.

Amanda,
I can relate like most of us here. I am saddened by the many wasted years of my life, years I could have and should have been living for Jesus but instead living for myself. I also have said I would'nt certain things and I ended up doing them. If I even begin to cop a self righteous attitude toward someone God will stop me immediately and I ask God to forgive me for my self righteous attitude. I am thankful for God's forgiveness and sometimes he gives us do-overs. I have learned the hard way but by the grace of God, go I. We are never beyond his reach and he can take a broken sister and put us back together in a way that our lives bring glory to him and lead others to Jesus. I thank God for his forgiveness, mercy and grace and new beginnings!

Hey Amanda,

I was not a good girl in high school. People who I meet now can't even imagine it. All I can say is that what ever our sins were, praise God that we are born again through Christ. I like The Messages take on Romans 6:11:

Could it be any clearer? Our old way of life was nailed to the cross with Christ, a decisive end to that sin-miserable life—no longer at sin's every beck and call!

I once heard a speaker say "Our old life is up there on the cross it is soaked in His blood. Why would you take it down and look at it again and again?" Hmmm...good point.

Blessings-
Jennifer

So true...I remember when I was in high school and I really felt sorry for the older brother, in the parable of the Prodigal Son. I related to his feelings. He felt like his brother was being rewarded for sinning. He felt like he had spent his life miserably doing what he was supposed to for his father. It wasn't until years after I had spent part of my life as the prodigal myself that I experienced first hand the incredible grace and forgiveness of God. I think Beth said it best when she said, "Christians should be known for what they do for God, not what they don't do." Now that I am trying to be the father in that parable to my teenagers, I realize that is the best place to be. (Not the easiest, but the best.) To try to love and forgive unconditionally and to love and serve God because I want to, not because I have to.

I found myself in a similar situation of doing that which I had sworn i would not do, complicated by that declaration was a need to cover up the consequence of that sin ... it was 10 years later that i realized the problem was i acted in the only way i could because i was acting alone. There wasn't much teaching in our little country church about everyday relationship with Jesus, only about the salvation experience and I didn't grow much past the prayer until I was an adult ... but God is faithful and gave me asecond chance and son so that I could begin to learn about God's love for me.

It is so true...the more I realize all that the Lord has forgiven me of in the past, and at the end of the day the mistakes I make even now, it just does something in your heart. You can't help but just love others more passionately and unconditionally than you ever thought possible... because you realize what our FAITHFUL God has done in your own life, and are compelled to share it with others. I love the words of tim hughes's song:

It's the overflow
Of a forgiven soul
And now we've seen you God
Our hearts CAN NOT stay silent

Dearest Amanda,

A broken and contrite heart He will in no way cast out...praise God!

To paraphrase from you mama's latest book...you are a much better person broken and healed that you ever would have been whole.

That is the beauty of God's economy. Nothing, but nothing, is ever lost...and praise God He does use all things together for good for those who love Him and have been called according to His purposes.

I'm quite certain that God will use your testimony to touch others. They will be able to learn and use the opportunities that God brings in their path.

Lord's blessings...and welcoming to the world of blogging.

Also, thank you for your posting today! I still struggle over my days of being on both sides of the fence...and wonder how many lives were destroyed because the focus was not on God as it should have been, but the things of this world.. and pretending to be so rightous! It is one of the biggest haunts of my past that I can't seem to let go of!
Thank you for all the time and effort you put into this website and blog! You are so special to me!

I was laying in bed one night, and this vision just came to my mind, which of course then led me to the word.

" As she entered the house, she hesitated for a moment, ashamed of herself, as eyes gazed upon her, and people spoke under their breath as she walked through the dining area.~ Then her eyes found Jesus, and she dashed to him as quickly as she could, falling to her knees, and her face to the floor. She picked herself up, and started kissing each foot from Jesus's ankles to His toes. She realized as she kissed him that she had saturated them by her tears. She gently brushed over his feet with her hair, and wiped the skin dry. Then she reached for her perfume, and she poured the entire bottle all over His feet, and held out her hand to make sure not a drop fell to the floor. She was able to calm herself down, then someone she realized had placed a hand on her shoulder and she looked up, and she immediately saw the face of Jesus smiling down over her.
Suddenly, someone spoke the truth of who she was, and she was startled and started to back away, but Jesus grabbed ahold of her hand, and brought her close to him. She was in such awe of Him. She had heard of Him, but never realized how powerful and amazing He was, and surley never believed that a person such as she, could even be within his very sight! Her days were filled with such torment, and she had no dignity left within her, but something about Jesus, made her feel welcome. As he spoke to the other men, He wiped the tears from her eyes, and as he told her that she was forgiven of her sin, she could actually feel her entire past of suffering fade away."

Reading all of this, I am reminded of the sweetest children's book called "Sidney & Norman". This book was written by Phil Vischer the creator of Veggie Tales and he includes a section at the end of the book that says he wrote it because he realized he was acting as "God's messenger" to point out all of his wife's messes! Oh my! Every time I read this to my kids (or to myself!) I cry! How can God love me so much?!

I really related to so much of what you shared. I had great parents who pointed me to Christ, but many times throughout the teenage years I allowed my "good girlness" feed my pirde rather than seeking to glorify Him. THe Lord has really used being a wife and mother to expose my selfishness and pride. I found I could not "achieve" and "excel" at these like I had so many other things in my life. I have been broken and have learned to seek and honor Him alone. Thanks for the challenging thoughts! He is so faithful to forgive and restore!

Amanda, I, too, had prideful, self-righteous high school years followed by a major fall in college. only it took me a long time to get over my self-righteousness even after my fall. Not that I thought I was righteous any more. But I really believed I was worse than others who had jumped into the same pit, because I knew better. I longed to have a do-over so I could show God that I could resist that pit. (Not God's grace, just my own will power!) I praise God that He finally got through to me that it is by His grace and His grace alone that I can do anything! Thank you for sharing your story.

In Christ,

April
