Tuesday's Common Meal

Here's our common meal for this week, Siestas! We'll do something fun from the "No Other Gods" workbook for our main dish and I'll give you one of my old stand-by favorites for dessert.

Main dish: Let's all make the Sicilian Pizza Crust on p.119 then each of us decide on our own toppings. Perhaps ask each of your group members to bring their favorite topping then throw them on and bake them when they arrive. Let us know if you've got some really creative ones. If you've got a larger group, you might need at least two. One pizza has NEVER served 6 Moores!!

Dessert: This is the recipe I've used for years for the best old fashion pound cake you've ever tasted in your life. Your house will smell like Heaven. It is in an old church cookbook posted by a dear woman of God named Bea Brock from First Baptist Church of Victoria, Texas. (Might we call her Aunt Bea? Isn't that perfect for a pound cake baker?) It may not sound exciting but I promise you, it is a crowd pleaser. FYI: these portions always make a little too much for a standard bundt pan so leave some in the mixing bowl as you see it's getting too full. You can just eat that part with the beater like Jackson and I do.

5 Flavor Pound Cake:
2 Sticks Butter Softened
1/2 Cup Crisco Shortening
3 Cups Sugar
5 Eggs Well Beaten
3 Cups Flour
1/2 Tsp. Baking Powder
1 Tsp. Salt
1 Cup Milk
1 Tsp. each of vanilla, lemon, almond, coconut and butter flavor extracts.

Combine butter and Crisco. Add sugar and beat until fluffy. Add eggs; mix flour and baking powder and salt, alternately with milk. Add extracts. Pour into well greased and floured tube pan. Bake at 325 degrees for 1 and 1/2 hours. Let cool completely before you turn it out of the pan. That means you'll need to make it about four hours in advance of class to be on the safe side. You can put a glaze on it but it doesn't need it. You can also throw some fresh strawberries or blueberries on it with whipped cream. You'll be back at your great grandmother's house again with the first bite, tasting one of your sweetest childhood memories.

OMG - this is the recipe handed down to me from my grandmother here in the mountains of Virginia many years ago. It is the best pound cake recipe ever. I have made it so often that it has been committed to my memory. I knew you and I were some how connected - now I know it's that recipe. Thanks, Beth - and I'm loving the Bible study!!!

The day I get out of school mode where I can actually have a kitchen is going to be amazing...

Until then, I'm saving these up :) And working on making a cookbook for students who might fall over from microwaveable meals!

My friend Holly's Mamma Jean makes this, but add the five flavors to the glaze (I think it's like 1 c. sugar and 1/2 c. water boiled and add 1 t. of each flavoring to it. Boil it 'til the sugar is melted and pour it on the hot cake in the bundt pan.)). It is really good!

Page 119! Are we allowed to skip? My mel-phleg personality is wigging out here. LOL! This recipe sounds delicious. My grandmother always made us a chocolate pie when we came visiting back in the '60s. The richest, creamiest chocolate pie. It's out of this world. She passed away 2 days before my 8th birthday, but I remember her still. I make her pie once a year only because the memory of that richness lasts a long time! God bless our grandmothers who loved us so!

Beth, for whatever reason this works, but put the cake in a cold oven and THEN turn the heat on. Don't ask me why, it makes the cake moister.

I wanted to share the toppings that are "almost" like Papa Murphey's Vegetarian Gourmet Pizza," if anyone was interested:
1 small package fresh spinach, chopped
2 medium fresh zucchini , sliced
1 sweet red pepper, chopped finely
1 small package fresh mushrooms, sliced
6-8 green onions, finely chopped
1 medium red onion, finely chopped
2 cloves garlic, finely minced
1 can artichoke hearts (not marinated), chopped
2 Roma tomatoes, chopped
1 small can black olives, sliced
1 c. ranch (Hidden Valley Ranch dip is my favorite.)
1 T. olive oil
2 c. shredded Monterrey Jack cheese
1/4 c. grated Parmesan cheese

Sauté zucchini, red pepper, mushrooms, minced garlic, green and red onion in olive oil.

Spread 1 c. ranch on first. Top with tomatoes, spinach, artichokes, black olives and then sautéed mixture (spread evenly over crusts).

I'm one of those plan ahead types that can't wait 'til Monday to run to the store for Tuesday's meal so we're having Becker's Pasta but we'll still be sharing the NOG's discussion questions & enjoying Italian cuisine with y'all - I'll try my best not to burn those expensive pine nuts!
My assignment from our small group that I almost forgot about is to ask where the "Siesta' name came from for those sharing the joy of this blog? One very young mom in my group is of Mexican heritage and wants to know why we'd be calling each other an afternoon nap! Help?!?

Even though I am bummed out that I can't find the Bible Study book anywhere (I'm new in town and don't know anyone to ask, and I've hit every Bible book store in a 20 mile radius)at least I have this yummy recipe to ease my suffering!
I'll just keep reading that first chapter that you so kindly posted online over and over until I can get my hands on the whole book.
I went into a LifeWay bookstore and asked if they had "No Other Gods" and the salesman smiled and shook his head. "Beth Moore knows how to pick 'em. This must be an awesome study" is what he said.

Yep, I'd have to agree. Thanks for the recipe, Sister Beth.

Thank you for the pound cake recipe. It sounds delicious. I can't wait to try it. My mom always made an Apricot pound cake that was really good and it used several extracts too. I am loving the bible study as well. I am doing a bible study at church called "Lord, Change My Attitude" by James MacDonald. It is about changing attitudes of complaining, covetous, critical, doubting, and rebellious attitudes with thankful, content, loving, faithful, and submissive attitudes. It is amazing to me how it seems to tie in to the No Other Gods study. I am wondering what God is trying to say to me and I am trying to sit still, be quiet and listen to Him. Well, sorry this is so long today, just some thoughts I've had! Thanks again for all you Moore's do. God Bless you all!

Wow, this is almost exactly the recipe my grandmother handed down to me. Without a really pretty addition though. We always remove 2 cups of the batter and add some red food coloring to make it a pretty pink. Then when putting it in a bundt pan, we sandwich the pink batter btw. 2 layers of plain yellow. Makes a lovely pink swirl in the middle of every slice! And everyone always wants to know, "How did you get the pink in there?"

Can I just say that the thought of working with yeast really frightens me? I once made homemade cinnamon rolls and had to throw them out and start all over when I realized as they were baking that they hadn't raised sufficiently. SIX HOURS of making cinnamon rolls....not once, but twice. And messing them both up.

Maybe a pre-made crust can be disguised as homemade.

The pound cake is a CAN DO though!

BTW...my husband saw me reading the recipe suggestions online and he swears I'm involved in some sort of cult that tells me what I have to eat. LOL!

I have made this cake for years and it always, without fail, every time, draws rave reviews. However, the glaze makes it so much better. I also add in rum flavoring to the cake and the glaze which my recipe calls for. Six flavors in the cake and six in the glaze.

I make about 15 of these each Christmas and give them away. People wait all year for them. Yummm!! I may just have to go stir one up!

My only suggestion is that our next study include a weight loss program to rid my hips of the poundage I've put on.
Nah, just kidding!
We Southern girls just have to add a tad of sour cream, cream cheese, and butter and then deep fat fry it for good measure.
Now that's living right!

Make sure you make the pizza crust with 1 TSP and not 1 CUP of sugar like I did when I was testing the recipe for No Other Gods!! LOL. It was actually still good. Also, this weekend I made the pizza crust in the bread machine on the white dough setting and it worked fine. Needed a little extra flour worked in to be spread out but to me it's easier than recipe mixing and waiting for things to rise on a timed schedule.

Thank you for this wonderful recipe, as our 21 year old son used to love my now deceased grandmother's pound cake. I'll be making this for the fourth of July.

By the way, I was so sorry not to make the Deeper Still conference as I live in Atlanta. However, I know our city was blessed by the praise of so many. I believe large cities especially ought to lift praise as sin can be so prevalent in such populated areas. Our family has enjoyed some good times/dinners in the rotating restaurant atop the Westin hotel. I can never tell we were moving except for watching the skyline change. So, Melissa you are much more "atuned" than I. So sorry you had motion sickness ... although it sounds as if a few unnamed family members had a good laugh.

Can't wait til tomorrow to do our Bible session together. Even doing this solo, I've been 'nogged' by the lessons.

By the way Melissa, did you happen to see the most incredible golden sunset in Atlanta last night ... around 8:45ish? When the soft, warm glow came through our windows, I went to our front piano room thinking my husband had installed new golden outdoor lighting. The ambience and feel of the color was both silencing and awe-striking. It was God's gift of heavenly beauty across the horizon. My husband and I stepped outside in awe and couldn't help but pray to our creator.

Love from ATL (Peachtree Corners to be exact).

Sistas, That's What!
Our fellow blogger, Jackie, asked a good question after our lesson last night in Houston on friendships: BETH...... Okay tonight at Bible study we learned about calling our relationships by the right name.. we have friends, acquaintances, mentors, counselors, etc. SOOOO.... what do we call all these crazy ladies that have become an "online family"? They are a new sort of relationship.

I'll tell you what we call us: SISTAS!!!!! Blood-kin in Jesus' Name.

One More Thing, My Dear Siestas
A few minutes ago, I jotted AJ (Amanda) an email to let her know that I had posted the commissioning for our "Sistas" and my spell-check objected and insisted that I call you my "siestas." It made me laugh.

And made me hungry for an enchilada. Then ready for a nap.

Regarding pound cake - I have never made one before so I have a couple of questions.

1 - Is it supposed to be so heavy?

2 - Can you omit some of the extracts and still have a good flavor? I don't like the coconut taste.

Overall - everyone LOVES the taste but I am unsure of the heaviness and the extra flavors.

Thanks

For those of us siestas who are a "little closer to God" (aka: at a higher altitude like Colorado) we will need to make some adjustments to the pound cake recipe. Miss Holly at Crown Laid Down advises to add 1/4 cup flour, cut the sugar by 1/3 cup and only fill the pan 2/3 full. Also you might want to put a cookie sheet under your pan in case it runs over. I made the recipe without the adjustments and only filled the pans 1/2 full and run over they did. What stayed in the pan tasted wonderful - it just didn't look so pretty!

Made this cake today and it was so good. I was so proud of myself for having all the ingredients measured out correctly and all the flavors lined up in order according to your recipe. Poured the batter into my pan (old tube pan that is in two pieces) and put it in the oven. You know where I am going with this. I walked by oven a few minutes later and about 1/4 of my batter was in the bottom of my oven. Switched pans and saved the rest of the cake. Thanks for the recipe.

What a Great recipe! I can feel my carotid arteries getting hard already! I just found this blog and am thrilled! We are getting ready to do Stepping Up. I can't wait to see what God is going to do! Thank you Beth! We can't wait for Esther!

Even though my dear teenagers are visiting grandparents this week, I am so thankful that you all included recipes for the study. My sweeties really enjoyed making the queso and salsa the first week. And my youngest has made the salsa twice since our first study! And I would not have thought to include a meal or snacks with the study. It was really fun for them to prepare the recipes.

i made this cake today but i don't have any butter flavoring or coconut flavoring. i did have orange extract and mango extract though, and substituted them for the ones i was missing. (yes, i do know it's odd to have mango extract!) also, i baked the batter in two bundt pans, making smaller cakes. i was thinking about sharing one of the cakes with someone else but i'm not sure either cake will last long in my house. 1/2 of a warm pound cake is already gone! i have 3 boys and 1 husband (not to mention myself..) and the cake is delicious, substitutions and all!!

Can someone please tell me how to make the glaze for the pound cake? I'd love suggestions.
