The Miracle of Divine Revelation
I am not sure how you first came to know Jesus Christ. You may have first heard Him speak to you at an evangelism crusade or perhaps you sensed His immediate comforting presence during a certain extraordinary life experience. I have friends who have witnessed miraculous moments with Jesus Christ and I even have friends who have heard Him speak to them in their dreams. For reasons unknown to me, the Lord has never chosen to communicate with me through these sorts of experiential avenues. And I, in the past, have become a tad envious of those who have experienced God in these phenomenal ways. Please don’t read me wrong, Siestas. I am not questioning if God really does communicate with human beings in these miraculous ways, I ABSOLUTELY believe that He does. I am just saying that I myself have yet to experience Jesus Christ like this.
In brief, I was raised in a Christian home. Yes, I was raised by a woman who I like to call “the- Titus- woman- from-you-know-where” (but I say the word). I heard about Jesus Christ every single day. I was encouraged, if not enforced, to do a “quiet time” at a very early age. And I am so glad that I was but it remained vital for me to actually experience God for myself. So, in High School I began to question if I really “knew” Jesus. It wasn’t that I was living in a bunch of sin at that particular time; it was simply that I did not feel very connected to Him. I didn’t feel in my heart that He communicated with me.
So I called to mind a very basic verse in Matthew that says, “Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you” (Matt. 7:7). I certainly hadn’t had any exegetical training at that point, but I figured that what this verse meant was that the Lord would communicate with me if I truly sought His face. So I said to the Lord in my teenage heart, “Okay, Lord, I am going to spend the next few months seeking your face with all of my heart and then if I don’t sense your presence, then I really am done with all of this Christianity.”
So what I had intended to be a few months of seeking God through rigorously reading the Bible has become a lifetime passion for me. Yes, even more than cooking. What I found when I read the biblical text was something other-worldly. To me the biblical text was self-testifying. It simply spoke up for itself. I didn’t have to defend it or try to make it sound true, I simply read it and knew it was truth. This skeptic's heart began to melt like butter. My mind had never been so stimulated, my heart had never been more encouraged, and my own worldly intentions had never been so thwarted. When I read through the pages of the Bible, the Holy Spirit testified to my spirit that I was a child of God. And even today, dear Siestas, when I distance myself from reading the biblical text, I feel my mind beginning to drift. I feel my heart slowly harden and I feel more prone to depression and despair. And not surprisingly so, I begin to feel more intoxicated by the pleasures of the world around me. It is like John Bunyan said, “This book will keep you from sin, or sin will keep you from this book”.
One thing that my research of the Book of Esther has taught me is the significance of intentional remembrance. I have purposefully been bringing back to mind my first experiences of the Lord Jesus Christ. This is what I remember most: I came to know Jesus Christ when I took the time to read the actual content of the Bible for myself. This is why I have devoted my life to a shameless study of the biblical text. This is why I work for Living Proof Ministries, because we exist to exalt the power of God through the biblical text. We exist to loudly proclaim that “the word of God is living and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart” (Heb. 4:12).
I have been reminded afresh of the wonder of the Scriptures. I have found what my Mom said all of those years to be true. I have found that indeed, “there is no other book like it”. When you sit on your couch with your Bible in your lap, you are a witness to a miracle. This miracle is called Divine Revelation. And the miracle of divine revelation is not a “lesser miracle”; it is not merely what the rest of us “get” by default because the Lord doesn’t have to time to appear in another one of our dreams. There is no greater phenomenon than an almighty and holy God speaking to and through humankind. God has chosen to speak to you, dear Siesta, and to reveal to you the mysteries of salvation history: the knowledge of his glorious Son. Take a minute today to behold the miracle of the written word of God…take a minute to read the very best of all books. Behold and then tell of His glory.
I love you, Siestas, and wish sometime soon we could all have an old fashioned "pot-luck" around a massive round table together.

Thank you, Melissa. This is exactly what I needed to hear today. You are a blessing.
Melissa, that was a powerful word! I too love studying God's Word! Other people go home at night and kick their feet up in front of the TV, but I can't wait to curl up with my Bible study! Thank you so much for sharing that word with us today!
Blessings
Michelle
Lord have mercy, my heart rate is nearly aerobic. I can hardly even type for wanting to raise up both my hands. There is NOTHING like the revelation of God through the pages of Scripture. NOTHING. And this from a child so strong willed when she was little that we started each day of her fourth year with these words from her mouth, "Are you gonna boss me today?" Take heart, moms of kids strong enough to make James Dobson cry his eyes out! God raises them mighty if they will let Him! Ask Him then BELIEVE! And give them the room and the permission to develop. Praise His merciful Name.
What timing! TONIGHT I launch a class at our church on 'Personal Bible Study' (a 9 week class on HOW to study the bible) In my prep times I have been again refreshed at the AWE of God's word. An observation: when God created man in Gen. 2:7 it says our bodies are made from the dust of the ground, BUT our LIFE comes from the breath of God! So we nourish our bodies with the fruit of the ground, But NOT our soul - (try we might, to satisify with MANY things) the ONLY thing that will nourish our soul is the breath of God. 2 Tim. 3:16 "All scripture is God-breathed..." How cool is THAT! What design ~ "I gave you life with My breath, and here's My word (My breath) to sustain you." Go God! YOU are AWESOME!
Melissa, what an amazing post! So much wisdom and truth packed into one post. You're an awful lot like Miss Beth, aren't ya'?? ;o)
I've committed to read the whole bible this year and I'll say this for being in God's word - I've never been closer than now. His Word truly is ALIVE!
Thank you Melissa. I truly needed that since I am in such a dry spell and dealing with many difficult things in my life. I needed a holy kick on the hiney!
Melissa, what a great testimony! Jesus came alive to you through His Word, revealed Himself to you through His Word and gave you a hunger and thirst for Him and His Word that continues to this very day. Sounds like a miracle after all, huh?!
You're an incredible blessing to all of us, Melissa! I've been a Christian for many years, and in the last 8 years I've learned to LISTEN TO Him through His Word and FOR Him in my daily life.
Thanks for sharing!
Amen and amen. I am asked often if God doesn't care about a person if they can't hear Him speak. I always proclaim...pick up His Word and LISTEN. Now I am just going to print out your blog, Melissa, and hand it to them. Thank you so much for such a powerful word!!
Amen, Siesta! Although I wasn't raised by the "Titus-woman-from-you-know-where", that same woman ignited a fire in my life for scripture. Experiencing God by Henry Blackaby was my spring board into a deeper walk with the Lord and then I met that "Titus-woman-from-you-know-where" through facilitating "A Woman's Heart: God's Dwelling Place" about 10 years ago. Since then, I have facilitated almost every Bible study she has written - some more than once - and am full circle now attending (not facilitating) the revised "A Woman's Heart: God's Dwelling Place." I don't know if Beth knows it, but that study was written especially for me during this season of my life. Through your mom's counsel, I have prayed for God to make me smarter than I am, that I would know Him and love Him more and more with every passing day and that He would open my eyes and heart to understand deeply what I read in His Word. I can honestly say that His Word is life to me! Through some trials over the past few years, His Word always speaks Truth into each situation and I honestly would have remained in a heap without it. Through the most recent challenges, I have literally saturated myself - listening to the Bible on cassette tape as I travel, just grabbing on as a life preserver. Like you, in those lapse times, negativism creeps right in. Yes and Amen to all that you said. You go, girl!!! See you in San Antonio!!!
Thanks SO much for sharing Melissa! That reminded me so much of my own story growing up. I did that exact same thing as a teenager, even with the same verse. He is so good! I am doing Believing God now and I just finished the part about Remembering God in my past. So, I have been intentionally remembering Him in my past over the last few weeks. :) Its so funny how when He starts teaching you something about a subject, it shows up in all sorts of ways over and over and over! He is SO awesome! I cant wait to have a "pot-luck" around a massive with you!! Bethany
That was just beautiful Melissa. You spoke to my heart today and I thank you.
Thank you for sharing your heart with us. I'd love to have pot luck with you and just "be" together.
What a gift you are to us, LPM, your family, and most of Christ Jesus Himself.
Your mom blesses me so each time she talks about this strong willed child of hers. I have one too. Part of me is scared to death and part of me is just as hopeful as anything.
Keep at Him Melissa. He's beautiful through you.
Hugs and blessings,
Fran

Thanks for those words Melissa. I have been a Christian since the age of 10 and still have a hard time hearing God's voice. It is the intentional reading of God's word that let's us be in touch with him. It is up to us to pick up the Bible and READ! So many times we just don't do it.
Thank you Melissa! I don't know how to set up a personal blog as I am very green the blogging world, so for now I guess I am anonymous. But I was moved to leave a comment. I just celebrated my 8 yr. anniversary of becoming a Christian on June 17th. And this season right now that I am in I am realizing how precious just THE WORD is. Sometimes I need to just put aside all of my other books and just sink deep into His love letter to me. Thanks for the word of encouragement about the very personal word of God. Blessings, Tami
Melissa -
I ALWAYS dig your posts, you seem to vocalize exactly what I need to hear and the way I need to hear it. You seem to have the same questions I do and I always enjoy relating to your comments and ideas. It is so nice to have a seista like you. I put one of the LPM prayer cards up that asks God to place someone in my life, and in some ways, I feel like you are a friend I can relate to. Thank you so much for honesty.
It is such a blessing to know that GOD HEARS US and communicates through people tailored made for us.
God Bless,
Molly in the OC
I cant wait till this weekend! I bet Atlanta is extra special to Beth now that you live here. See y'all soon! :)
I was raised in a home where scripture was foundational. Even as I shelved my faith in my 20's, those truths I learned through memorization and song sustained me. Eventually, I pulled the Book and my faith off the shelf.
No empty carbs here. Scripture is powerful, sustaining stuff - protein for the soul.
Melissa,
I was able to connect with what you shared. I also grew up in a Christian home and accepted Jesus as a young child. But when I was growing up I often questionned my salvation because I hadn't "felt the fireworks". At 16 I rededicated my life, but at bible college I began questioning my faith. Was God really real? What if the JWs or Mormons were right? What if...? I searched the scriptures and God affirmed to me that He IS real (Is.40:13ff). It was at that point that my faith became personal - I wasn't a Christian because I had grown up believing it but because I had questioned, wrestled & believed by faith that Jesus is the ONLY way to eternal life.
Through my life I haven't really ever heard of anyone with a similar testimony to mine, so it's encouraging for me to see a glimpse of your testimony.
Thank you for sharing,
~ Leanne from Canada
Melissa, thank you. I love reading your posts, and really identify with your perspective. The way you write and describe this Christian life speaks loudly to me, and I want you to know that it encourages me greatly. You have the tone of a great history with Jesus in your writing. May we all Dear Lord!
It does my heart good to see the reminder in your words. It is too easy sometimes to be distracted by the other things that the world offers. But I love knowing that God wrote this book for ME! (and for you and everyone else but for me too!) How can we not feel loved?
And I'm all for an enormous potluck. How about this weekend, right after Deeper Still?
I think this was a great post, many people feel they are alone when they had thoughts like these. Knowing that is common and we all have worldly struggles makes it real that we can all change.
much love and may all our hearts grow in gods words
i had a conversation with someone the other night about salvation--different experiences, believing, repenting, assurance, etc.--and you summed up everything I was trying to say then by saying, "When I read through the pages of the Bible, the Holy Spirit testified to my spirit that I was a child of God"...blessed assurance Jesus is mine! No one can ever take away the assurance that He gives.
He is Everything and always More Than Enough.
HALLELUJAH!
thank you

Melissa: thank you so much for this post. Your words have opened up a HUGE door to my current state of difficulties and struggle. It has been a HUGE learning curve for me, since accepting Jesus Christ as my savior just a few years ago (2004). I grew up in an abusive environment and my choices in life have been catastrophic, time and again. Since turning my life over to Our Savior, I wish I could say that my life has gotten easier, but it hasn't. I am still facing HUGE giants. But, this time, unlike before, I have in my hand this wonderful Book, His Word contained within delicately crinkly pages. It's our Father's Word -- and my *ONLY* hope.
Melissa - I love you too! and I can't wait to meet you soon in San Antonio!

Nothing could be truer. One of my most "Divine Revelations" came rather quite unexpectedly a few years ago.
After we had been married almost 7 years, we had two beautiful boys and a pretty good life.
When I had had my boys, it was kind of like, "grow up, get married, and have kids" mentality. It was just what you do.
But then my life changed. My husband gave his life to the Lord, for real!!! And soon after we decided to expand our family. We prayed together for our child that would join our family.
From the moment we found out we were expecting, it was different. It was God doing a work through us, and it was amazing.
I remember the week after we welcomed our precious daughter Micah into the world, just sobbing on the couch. My husband came home and sat down beside me asking what was wrong.
I told him, "As much as I love her, and couldn't live without her, she is not mine. I had to give her to Him. I knew He was the ONLY thing that could sustain me if He called her home, so I gave her to Him. Every day He ordained for her, would be His."
We prayed together, offering everything to Him.
It was so amazing to know that we were completely given over to Him, our very existence was in His hands.
It has been almost 5 AMAZING years. I am blessed.
I just walked in from a book discussion of "The Shack" with some girlfriends. The discussion was about how we need to discern EVERYTHING we read with scripture, about how it is the FIRST AND LAST authority on truth and how we can trust it ABSOLUTELY when things that sound or feel right try to sway our thinking.
THANK GOD He chose to reveal Himself in this way...there is NOTHING so miraculous as the Living God in a leather binding.
I needed this so much. I love Bible study (even though I have no idea how to pronounce 'exegesis'). But lately I've been immersed in preparation to teach junior high girls' Bible study at youth camp and I've been so stressed about 'preparation' that I'm afraid I've tuned HIM out. Lord help me! Open my eyes, fill my heart and let nothing but Your truth fall out of my mouth!
Wait - so I'm not the only one who finds it hard sometimes to read the Word?! Oh thank heaven for this blog!!! I too needed this today...
-Aimee
Wow! I thought I was reading something Beth wrote at first! I so needed that today. I got up early this morning to get in the Word and I am praying I make it a daily habit and that the Lord will just "show up" each and every morning when I open the pages. I don't want to just read the Bible, I want to experience it! Thanks!
Printing this one up today...to chew on more extensively when children are not saying "pee-pie" behind a chair or yelling "it's my turn!." Aye.
I have a feeling from what I could comprehend, as I read this, Melissa--that it is a life giving Word to me this day.
God Bless you!
Amen! Melissa!
God has blessed you with the gift of teaching.
If I did not know otherwise, I would say you sat in my church last Sunday. Our pastor's sermon was on the importance of a daily quiet time in God's Holy Word.
I've been blessed by your words today.
This morning God spoke a word to my heart:
"He must become greater; I must become less. The one who comes from above is above all; the one who is from the earth belongs to the earth, and speaks as one from the earth. The one who comes from heaven is above all."
John 3:30-31
Love You!
Mary
Thank you Melissa. What a wonderful post. My 18 yr. old son and I were on the patio this morning praying about a specific situation and I felt the Holy Spirit impress on my heart to read Ps. 92. My son was in need of a Word from God and he got it. A smile came over his face. There is nothing like knowing that God gave you a specific verse for a specific situation. His Word is life and He is Good.
Love You,
Patty
Memory Stones my pastor calls them. Rememberance of the God Milestones in our life. He gave the illustration of Jacob placing his head on a rock to sleep and the rock served as a memorial stone to his ladder climb heavenwards. WOW!!! Thanks Melissa. As I look toward Him I hope my memory stones lead me straight to the ROCK!!!
By the way...Whats with this word "exegetical". Just when I thought I had heard them all!!! I have to go look up another one EXESTENTIAL VERY EXESTENTIAL!!!
Love ya girl
Kristin
Oh Melissa,
You touch my heart with truth and bring tears to my eyes. I have felt what you have felt and been were you have been. Praise HIS Name that He loves us so through HIS Almighty written Word.
I am learning face down before Him, and He is so gracious to met with me there.
We siesta's are so blessed to be a part of the LPM group.
God bless your day and enjoy His presence upon you.
Love ya,
Celeste
I LOVE when you post in!! It's impossible for me to simply sit in my computer chair and read what you have to say -- the rocks will cry out if I remain silent!! Amen sister, that is a word!!
You are absolutely right, and I needed to be reminded to be purposefully remembering where I have been, what He has done, and what He has promised.
Melissa,
You have such a beautiful way with words and such a beautiful heart. Thank you for sharing your emotions and your path to knowing Christ. It's great to hear that others out there have been in the same place I sometimes feel like I am. I love the verse from Matthew that you shared. So simple, so precise, yet sometimes hard for us to do - all we need to do is ask Him! Have a great Wednesday.
I walked down the isle at First Southern Baptist Church of Artesia when I was 10. I loved Jesus dearly. I didn't really "get it" until I did "The Beloved Disciple". The light came on and Jesus was standing there looking at me and I could almost here Him say "Duh"!!! I cried and laughed and so did He! It has been the absolute end and beginning of me. I've never been so happy! Melissa you are a blessing. I'm so glad your momma bossed you, but Jesus grabbed you!
Judy
Melissa,
Thank you so much for your words of encouragemnt. I too have always longed for that "mountain top" experience to really feel Jesus. Two years ago I started a bible study at my church, and I really knew nothing about the bible. With the help of your mom it has been life changing for me and so many women in my group. I agree with you so much that when we stop reading the Word for a while, we slip into our old ways. Depression is a big one for me too. But when I'm in the Word daily (or at least regularly!) I feel so much better and am better able to handle what life throws me. Thanks for letting me know I'm not alone in my feelings

Hey Melissa!
I'll have to print this one and take notes!:) I came to know Jesus, my Lord! the summer before eighth grade, and by that time, I was not heading in any good direction with divorced parents and family issues, childhood victimization, and a eating disorder among other horrific sin-not good. My older sister,siesta Matiaskardia, had gotten saved by that point, and kept inviting me to church youth. Once I came and heard the message a couple of times and fully realized what it meant, I zealously was transformed! ALL GLORY TO GOD!!! I loved HIM soo much and thought I would always stay by HIS side and never leave, so grateful was I and all about being a new creation and leaving my old life behind me (I wanted to literally forget it all, but now I know God wants to use it for ministry of some sort)And, like you said:
"And even today, dear Siestas, when I distance myself from reading the biblical text, I feel my mind beginning to drift. I feel my heart slowly harden and I feel more prone to depression and despair. And not surprisingly so, I begin to feel more intoxicated by the pleasures of the world around me. It is like John Bunyan said, “This book will keep you from sin, or sin will keep you from this book”."
That's what happened-I got prideful and fell into horribly impure sin and knew that I had broken HIS heart...my heart and mind was deluded...BUT, He never left me and HE is bringing me back to Himself! If my christian life could tell anyone anything, it would be: DO NOT LET ANYTHING GET BETWEEN YOU AND THE LORD AND LEARNING AND LIVING OUT HIS WORD! DO NOT GO THERE! DO NOT GO THERE! He loves me-I know that...I never, ever, want to leave His side ever again, so I claim Ps. 121 and Jude 24,24 among many other verses. I absolutely have to...I am also so sorry for the long post, I wanted to share with you all my testimony, and let you know that God can fix and forgive even the most messed up of persons. (I am saying this with tears in my eyes-I am serious)PRAISE THE LORD-He never gave up on me...
I love you all,
katiegfromtennessee
Melissa --
It has taken me half a lifetime to realize those same truths. Thank goodness you learned this while you were still young. It is a continual process. If we don't renew our mind daily, Satan WILL harden our heart and fill us with despair & hopelessness. Thank God for Christian moms, but more than that thank God that He is always willing to meet us where we are and reveal His truths to us.
From Sunny California!
I think you wrote that for me today. :) Thank you!
That will preach sister!! (um...I mean Siesta)
What a legacy unfolding!
Love,
Yolanda
That was a most excellent and powerful word Melissa. Thanks for sharing, sometime we all need to be reminded of how important it is to seek those Divine Revelations. Showers of blessing on your day.
Amen Melissa! I can't get enough of His Word. It is life to me! I can so relate to what you said about feeling an almost immediate drift of your heart when time has passed not in His word. I can't go a day without it!!!
"The grass withers and the flowers fall, BUT the word of our God stands FOREVER." Isaiah 40:8
oh dear Melissa, I so needed this...I am a tad ok a lot undisciplined about reading consistently....I have been praying for an accountablilty partner...someone who I can share what I am reading with....keep me true to this...but your post was something I needed to hear...accountablity partner or not...I have myself to say get on with it girl
love you siesta
Absolutely spoken from the heart of God! Thank you!
Melissa,
You are so right. I have had experiences of God speaking to me in dreams and I do love that. However, the daily conversations He and I have when I am in His word are so intimate and so precious. I have been enriched by learning from the major characters and events, but truly delighted when He teaches me something profound from, what appears to be the most insignificant character, event or phrase. (i.e.. Hairy Elijah and bald Elisha!) He is so wonderfully thoughtful and even playful. I truly adore Him! Thanks for a forum to share that!
Melissa,
Your post makes me want to cry and rejoice at the same time. I'm so glad you are real and transparent.
My experiences with GOD could already fill a small book. I'm afraid the unabridged version would look like "War and Peace" in size!
BUT I NEED TO TELL THIS!! Your love of the scriptures and making you eager to learn more and more is so divinely appointed!
I have researched how men gave their lives literally for us to have the word of GOD tranlated so that we can understand it and believe it.
Tyndale's fiery anger and determination that "even a boy who drove the plough would know and read GOD's word for himself" eventually led to conviction as heresy and being burned at the stake.
It saddens me to think that we take for granted what we have been given. I thank HIM for showing you that HE is real.
No one can catch it through another, they have to be given their own revelation of HIS presence and grace.
Thank you for this, Melissa and for being transparent and real when so many are not.
Blessings,
Teri
It is so great to hear how much you love the word. I began to crave the word of God a few years ago. I love reading it, and sometimes when I get a new glimps of Jesus through that book, I wonder why the entire world is not shouting out at that moment. But I have learned that it does not take much time away from that book before the world looks very inviting. I think I need a sticky note in my kitchen that says "intentional rememberance"
There is no adventure like life with Jesus Christ. Time for a little praise dancing I think!
Melissa,
Thanks for sharing some of your testimony! I was remembering the other day how I tried so hard to read the Bible when I was growing up but most of the time truly did not make a connection between the words on the page and my heart. As my relationship with the LORD has deepened greatly over the past several years, I now understand that His words are alive and active! Have an awesome rest of the day.
PS:Hope you are enjoying Atlanta, it's a busy city:) I've learned to just stay in the house or close by between 4-6pm...
Thank you, thank you. Amen!
And I'll bring the green bean casserole (to the massive potluck, that is).
What a great word. Years ago I discovered I loved the written word so much because it always reveals the Living Word, Jesus Himself, to me.
In fact, I just have to share this nugget. I'm reading through Exodus just now, trying to take in large chunks of the Word (b/c I normally love to do more word studies, but I love the truths He shows me when I will just plow through and not necessarily want to look up every other word). In Exodus 12:42 it states, "...the Lord kept vigil that night - the first Passover - to bring them - the Israelites - out of Egypt." It struck me that 1,500 ish years later Jesus would "keep vigil" for me and you when He prayed in the garden, went on trial, was beaten and mocked and finally died. That was Passover night. What won't He do for us? Nothing. He's done it all.
And, Melissa, like you mentioned about the "remembrance factor" in Esther - same with this passage. The rest of this verse states, "...on this night all the Israelites are to keep vigil to honor the Lord for the generations to come."
I'm so glad God's committed to my freedom - and to making sure I remember that, indeed, I've been set free!
Yikes! Look how chatty I've been!
Blessings, Warm in Alaska.
I just happened to stop by and found your wonderful blog, how great this is! I just finished reading your post "Why Do You Worry" and all is well within me now. It was no coincidence that God brought me here to read, thank you!
Ria
My sisters and mom and I have had this exact discussion and I forwarded it to them before I even got halfway through your post. You are so on - it isn't a lesser miracle and we can never forget that. God speaks and He speaks into each of us so differently with the same Truth.
And even if that potluck is somewhere in eternity future, my sisters and mom and I will be there - and we'll bring something good. :)
Melissa, one of my favorite songs that brings tears to my eyes with such truth is ANCIENT WORDS. One can view the song with words on youtube.
I heard a speaker once who coming to the United States from Russia where Bibles were not allowed, was saddened by all the bibles left in the "lost 'n found," at church and no claimed them. She couldn't imagine someone losing their bible and not looking for it. She said it in a much heart-felt way than I could repeat for her.
Thank you Melissa for sharing this. I was raised in a Christian home too, and went through a time in my teens where I doubted and questioned everything I had been taught, when I started seeking the Lord for myself. I'm going through the Believing God study right now (viewing Session 9 tonight). It is cool how intentional remembrance is a part of your Esther study! It will never cease to amaze me how our God TIMES things SO PERFECTLY to seasons in our lives. His timing has been PERFECT with the order that I've done the Bible studies in & exactly WHEN I've done them.(Breaking Free 7 years ago, Daniel, the updated version of A Woman's Heart, Stepping Up, and now Believing God.) He defintely speaks very intentionally and personally to each of us right where we are at through His Word! Hope to see you this weekend at the Deeper Still conference!
Melissa, Thank you for your powerful words and for reminding us that the Bible is our "Book of Life". When we're not in it, Satan can have a hayday with us. I am working on reading through the Bible - it's filled with EVERYTHING we need. You are such a blessing to me and I enjoy hearing from you.
I have felt God speaking to me over some months time. I ignored Him at first, like so many of us do, but knew I would "get around" to doing what He was asking in time. I have also been praying about a situation in my life for which I needed great help but felt my prayers were not being answered. The day I finally began to follow God's instructions, He answered my prayer in a miraculous way. God communicates with all of us in words and actions!
Praise You Jesus! And bless your precious heart Melissa! I had similar experiences growing up. The confusion and the guilt for having the confusion is hard to understand unless you have been through it yourself. I thank Him that He gives all the answers, that He IS the answer. My friend and I are reading through the bible. At her suggestion we are going to try to do it in 3 months (give or take a few weeks). She feels like we need to devour the word, not just have little snacks here and there. It truly is alive and active! Hope you'll be at Deeper Still this weekend.
Blessings,
Deanna
Oh, Melissa! You HAVE a FRESH WORD from GOD, my sweet Siesta! Thank you for the encouragement you have given me this day!
I think I've asked this before, but I'm going to ask it again just in case I haven't. Would you please share your typical approach to studying Scripture? I would love to know how you tackle research!
Thanks, Melissa. Again, you gave such a great word today. I am grateful for it!
Prayers and Blessings,
Rebecca
Melissa--awesome word. I completely agree. I need the miracle of Divine Revelation every single day of my life, even more than food itself. Funny how things of the world cloud our vision and distract us from the Word which we need most. Bless you young lady and thanks for the word.
Thank you so very much Melissa..I needed that so very badly today. It is so easy to get caught up in the troubles of this world and to lose our focus.
Stacy
Thank you Melissa for encouraging me in the Word! It was exactly what I needed. The Lord has impressed upon my heart time and time again lately how very important it is for me to read His Word and I have just been flat out disobedient. I have been so irritable and impatient and you know why? I bet you can guess why...I haven't been reading the greatest Book of all times. I truly believe the Lord used you to speak this to me. Thank you for being obedient. Now, I, too, must go be obedient. Love you sister!
Proclaim it, Siesta!
Awesome word! Thanks so much! I am so encouraged and ready to take the challenge!
Amen Sister!
We will have that potluck around the banquet table of the Lord.
Melissa, I am so glad that we are getting to know you and your love of the Lord Jesus, too.
I am one of those who has "heard" Jesus speak in my heart but it only came after praying and studying His word.
It is just so AWESOME. There is a line in the Rule that we follow here in the convent that says "What line, what word of Holy Scripture is not the truest of guides."
Blessings,
Sister Lynn
Bless you, Sister! And Amen!! I've always been an avid reader but I didn't read the whole Bible, front to back, until I was 29 years old. I'm a little ashamed to admit it. Some mornings when I was reading I would get chills, and think to myself, "But He is speaking to ME in this verse! It was here all the time and I never saw it!" Melissa, God has children, not grandchildren (as Sheila Walsh would say); I'm so glad you were raised in the family you were (lucky duck!) But I am so, so happy you have your very own testimony of Christ. Your own proof--what a treasure. I'm sure you will be writing a book someday (if you're not already).
Lord Jesus, continue to bless this blog & its readers. We love you.
This is EXACTLY where I am right now. I'm 29 and have been a Christian a long time, but where I am just isn't enough. I've heard your mom say that there is more. I've heard you say that there is more. And I want to know more of Christ through more of His word. But with such a big 'ole book, it's hard to know where to start. Please pray for me as I commit to immersing myself in the Word for the first time in my life.
Thanks so very much for your post.
AMEN sister! That was an awesome post - no wonder Mama Beth is about to come out of her flip-flops today! If one of my daughters were to ever write something like that (20 years or so from now when they can, you know, actually hold a pencil and spell and stuff)I'll be first in line for the Rapture!
My personal encounters with God, the times when I have felt His holy and unmistakeable presence around me have been absolutely life changing! And you know what? The Word of God is actually God's words! My encounters with him have been unmistakeable because when I get a word from Him, it's been a word, from The Word! If I don't read my bible how will I know what God has to say to me?!
"Delight yourself in the Lord and I will give you the desires of your heart". That's not how Psalm 37:4 is written but when it popped into my head in the first person, you can bet I knew where it was coming from! Everything we need to need to know about our awesome Creator is in that book. We will never be able to fully plumb its depths, but I need to spend my life trying.
I've been reading it most of my life and have gone through times when I'm more committed to studying it than others. But since doing Breaking Free last Fall, I can't get enough of it. It goes with me everywhere now just so I can keep trying to learn as much as I can from it. So I can hear and know when He is speaking to me!
Thanks for sharing that today!
Christine
What a powerful word from an amazing woman of God. And miraculous revelation in His Word is LIFE itself. Beth, look out! Here she comes-- You're a treasure, Melissa. Love, Annette
While I was encouraged by this post, I was even more encouraged by Beth's comment. Yes, I am seeking the Lord on a daily basis, yes, I believe His word is alive and active...but what I worry about is how in the world to raise these 4 precious little ones He has given me. An impossible task! I cannot even begin to imagine them as actualized adults...Help me, Jesus! I am too broken on my own...so I turn to Him every day for the wisdom to do what needs to be done TODAY...and trust me, my kids could make Dr. Dobson cry...so I worry. But seeing Melissa's post from a mother's perspective, and reading Beth's response, was just what my heart needed to hear today. To trust God to raise them up, and give Him the space to do it. Thank you. Love, Michelle in California
i agree. God pseaks through His word. but i do know He does speak through dreams and such. Test to see if the Lord is good. Always comes to that. so true. we all have are own walk. that is why is it called personal realtionship. You are bless to have a gifted mom. but when all is said and done you are too the daughter of the Most High God. In His service, Jeanette
That was beautiful Melissa! Thank you for sharing your heart! Such a sweet reminder!
Emmy
Thanks Melissa. You are always so insightful. I love not only being a child of the one true living God- I love having sisters in Christ like you.
ps I still need a partner for the summer study
Rosie
WOW, you truely are amazing. I too love to read and study my Bible and learn what God has for me. I love doing this more than watching tv or any movie. We are told to become more like Him and to me the only way to do that is to keep my mind on Him at all times and pray continually. If not my mind will stray from Him and thats the time our enemy comes at us. Oh girl you are so smart for your age. May God continue to do a work in your life.
Melissa ....
Thank you for your words today ...they spoke so dearly to my heart. I am amazed beyond words to the beautiful woman you have become in our Lord and Savior and it gives me great hope that my children will keep their eyes focused on His word.. they too are strong willed and reminded me alot when they were younger that "you can't tell me what to do"... I know I must have looked like the titus women from you know where when that came out of my mouth. Good thing the Lord has softened me a bit over the years.
And I praise God for your Titus woman because when I was at the very lowest point in my life, I found her on Life today and then now 3 bible studies later and many more to go... I too again believe that God does love me too...!!! So blessing on you and your family and I can't wait to see everyone in San Antonio...
Lots of Love Lichelle
P.S. are we ever going to see anymore wedding pictures????
I was raised in a "churchy" home. But I did not know what a personal relationship with Christ was till I was 21. What still amazes me, is that I knew I was being called by Him, I just didn't know how to find Him. Thank God, literally for His faithfulness. He waited and kept calling till I found Him...Oh how grateful I am, that He did. Whoo, my throat is all lumpy.
Thank-you for this, Melissa!

WOW, Melissa. That was wonderful! I am so blessed to be connected to so many wonderful women thirsty for God and His Word and willing to encourage the rest of us to continue thirsting for His Righteousness! Thank YOu!
Sacha
Thankyou Melissa. Through health problems, homesickness (I moved countries!) and one thing on top of another, I have neglected my time with God and have never had doubts in my life the way I have over the last few weeks.....I need to do exactly what you did. In fact today I chose to check in to the blog when I was about to look at a different secular site, and I think God had a reason!
How great is His mercy.
love Ruth
Thanks Melissa...
You are a blessing...
And I am "IN" for the pot-luck. You just let us know when and where :)
Blessings to you!
like reading pages out of my own journey. thank you for sharing, melissa! may each and every one of us never "get over" the Word.
I'm in week 7 of the Believing God study. Talk about remembering!! It's super tough! But remembering is good - it allows God to heal my deepest darkest parts of my life.
I was never in church as a child - didn't go to church until I was 18 after the death of my father.
I pray to God I can be that Titus woman to my two young daughters - and my almost grown son.
Believing God has changed my life!
Looking forward to Deeper Still this weekend!

Melissa,
Thank you. I think what you say is so powerful for someone who was raised in such a similar way and who has children of her own. I think we need to be reminded that just because you are exposed to Jesus and live in a home that follows Jesus, it is important to experience Jesus for yourself. It is a personal, powerful revelation that changes you forever. Thank you for sharing your experience.
To Rosie with 3 boys,
Do you still need a partner for bible study online? I could be you partner.
M in the OC
Great post! I am praying now in my life to just fall in love with his word.
AMEN! Melissa! you have blessed me like crazy today!
I feel like I'm going through a "dry spell" right now, spiritually. I wonder if I'm missing something sometimes, especially when I speak to or hear women like your mother who obviously have such an intimate and real relationship with Jesus Christ.
Your post reminded me of exactly why I am a Christian. Because when I get into God's Word it's so powerfully apparent to me that it IS. Kind of like "I Am What I Am." It Is What It Is... Truth.
I feel like I've been drifting lately and I now realize that it's because my personal Bible study has gone from daily to weekly, at best.
Must remedy that immediately!
Thank you, Siesta!
And all God's people say "Amen"!
Melissa,
God has really been speaking to me through His Word ~~ and I love it!! He is so gracious to me. Thank you for posting and reminder us all of "The Miracle of Divine Revelation." Dawn
Hi Melissa,
Thanks so much for your post.
Earlier today, I finally got around to writing a long-promised letter to a dear friend who told me a few months ago that he was giving up Christianity and becoming an athiest. I literally felt like I was shooting in the dark as I wrote -- not knowing what kind of tone he needed or what truth he was ready to hear -- but I prayed desperately throughout, and prayed as I finished.
I dropped the letter off with him a couple hours ago and drove off asking God if I had done all right. I think I just got an answer and a dose of peace right through your entry. You see, in the meat of the letter I told him to keep an ear open for God and that there was no other place he could more securely find it than in the Bible itself. In the closing I mentioned a passage I had read while writing (Jer. 33). Maybe he'll feel curious enough to go read it.
I've never posted so long a comment, but I just wanted you to know what was going on in one corner of the world, and how our merciful Lord was using your words. :) Thanks.
Thanks Melissa. You touched on many things I have pondered on and off. I am in agreement. I also needed to read Beth's post as well. I have a precious 6 yr. old daughter that is used by God to work on my "fruit"! But she is also the first to talk to her friends about Jesus and heaven and tells them how to accept Him. Sometimes with the same "strong-will". Glory. I know God gets the biggest kick out of us!!
I AM hoping this will be alright. I just read this article by John Piper & thought it EXCLLENT!! It so reminded me of what we are studying & learning through NOG's. May it bless each & every one of you!!
Fighting Covetousness by Looking at Others
June 25, 2008
By John Piper
Read this article on our website.
This is overflow from a pastoral staff discussion on how to be free from covetousness. Fred Johnson had drawn our attention to Achan’s stealing and lying in Joshua 7:11. Jericho had fallen before Israel. The riches of the city were not to be taken. But Achan took garments and silver and gold. He hid them and tried to deceive the leaders.
Why did he do this? When he was caught, Achan gives the answer: “I coveted them and took them” (Joshua 7:21). Covetousness. He desired the silver, gold, and garments more than he desired fellowship with God.
There is no difference between the Hebrew word for desire and the Hebrew word for covet. Coveting means desiring something too much. And too much is measured by how that desiring compares to desiring God. If desiring leads you away from God rather than closer to God, it is covetousness. It is sin.
I suspect that the reason the Ten Commandments begin with the commandment “You shall have no other gods before me” (Exodus 20:3) and ends with the commandment “You shall not covet” (Exodus 20:17) is that they are essentially the same commandment. They bracket the other eight and reveal their source.
Not coveting means not desiring anything in a way that diminishes God as your supreme treasure. And not having any gods before God means the same thing: Don’t treasure anything or anyone in away that competes with God’s supreme place in your life. Idolatry is what we call disobedience to the first commandment. And idolatry is what Paul calls disobedience to the tenth commandment (Colossians 3:5).
So the reason Achan stole and lied is because God was not his supreme treasure. He was not satisfied in all that God promised to be for him. That is probably why Joshua said to Achan, when he was found out, “My son, give glory to the Lord God” (Joshua 7:19). It demeans the glory of God when we prefer anything above him. That was Achan’s chief sin. Desiring gold more than God equals covetousness—which equals idolatry.
So the pastoral staff pressed in on this and discussed how we can keep our lives free from this dreadful condition—desiring other things more than God, coveting, being idolaters. We talked about the importance of the word of God. “I have stored up your word in my heart, that I might not sin against you” (Psalms 119:11). Yes. Amen. We all agreed with that.
One other main suggestion emerged from Philippians. Paul describes the condition we all want to be in. He says, “Whatever gain I had, I counted as loss for the sake of Christ. Indeed, I count everything as loss because of the surpassing worth of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord” (Philippians 3:7–8). That is exactly the opposite of covetousness. That is the opposite of idolatry. That is supreme satisfaction in Christ. That is freedom.
But how, Paul? Do you have a practical suggestion that we can use to fight for this satisfaction in Christ? Here is what we saw in Philippians 3:17, and it is striking: “Brothers, join in imitating me, and keep your eyes on those who walk according to the example you have in us” (Philippians 3:17).
Here is amazingly practical help for us: Pick out some people whose lives show that they treasure Christ above other things. Then “keep your eyes on them.” Watch them. That, Paul says, is a good way to conquer covetousness.
There are some folks at Bethlehem whose maturity and wisdom and spiritual fruitfulness in their marriages, for example, is so admirable that I look at them and think about them a lot. When I am struggling with what I should feel and do in my marriage, I think about what they would do. I think Paul means something like that.
I would only add that it is good to have some dead saints to “keep your eyes on” as well. That’s what biographies are for.
So we as pastors would exhort you all to flee covetousness. Topple all your idols. “Count everything as loss because of the surpassing worth of knowing Christ.” Be in the word every day. But also find those who live this way and “keep your eyes on them.” What you will see, if you look carefully, is the power and the beauty of Christ. This sight will satisfy your soul. And your satisfied soul will keep you from stealing and lying. And your life will make God look supremely valuable.
Looking at you and Paul and Christ with joy,
Pastor John
Great post....we all need encouragement to keep digging into the Word!!! I'm doing "The Bible in 90 Days" study this summer and am loving it!! I've never read the Bible straight through like this, and although it is very different from an indepth study, I highly recommend it!! God's word is so powerful and when you read it in this short time span it is very fresh. Thanks for posting...we all love you!!
Girlfriend. I do believe you are as annointed as your Mother.
What a powerful word.
Amen and Amen!
I thank you for your post. I would appreciate prayer for those of us who have given their lives to Christ but still have a hard time understanding God's Word. I am currently very discouraged with how much I understand and also with the fact that often when I read, I actually come away feeling confused. I'd love suggestions, thoughts, and prayers. Thanks so much. I aspire to have the love and the life-giving power that comes from the Word someday just like so many of you.
How true that the Word is wonderful! I have a few times throughout my life (recently turned 70) gotten away from studying the Word of God. Now I am again hungry for it, and I thank God for your Mom who is used of God to present the Word in such a way that it's also fun to study. I love "word" treasures that have been unlocked for me over the last couple of years. As I look back, I can't remember why I'd get away from in-depth study, but Praise God! He is faithful and draws me back, and stronger each time. Our God is an awesome God!!

Thanks Melissa,
It is often such a battle to just get into the Word, and once I do, I always think to myself, "why didn't I just do this sooner?" I also pray for my kids that they too will have their own personal experience with God. Amy Grant gives a similar testimony about growing up in a Christian home with an awesome spiritual foundation, and then when she encountered God for herself it just added to that foundation and gave her "something to write about". Beyond praying for my kids needs, and behavior, I ultimately pray for God to reveal Himself to them on an intimate, heart, level where they can't deny Him. I too have an "I'm the boss" daughter. I love her spunk and wouldn't change her for the world, because I know that it will serve her and her God well one day... I Believe, believe, believe!!
God bless,
Cindy R.
Melissa,
Wow! You are so wise beyond your years. What a great word about the WORD!!
It was your precious mother who nurtured in me a love for God's Holy Word, too. Before I started attending Tuesday night studies at HFB, I never heard the Word of God come alive in such a powerful way. Now I am caught up in it, hook, line, and sinker.
Melissa, I am so proud of you. Really, truly proud of the beautiful woman in Christ that you are - inside and out.
May God bless you all of your days and May His face shine upon you and give you His peace.
I love you, Lil Siesta!

I don't remember which study or even the exact words your mom used in this story about you; it's probably the one illustration that sticks out most to me from all the studies-I guess the deatilas don't matter because I got her point and the impression has never left...she found you sitting in her seat at the dining room table and you blurted something out about getting to know the Lord. That's what I've remembered most about you: an honest hunger. It's a testimony that encourages me to continually own my faith and to make it the very essence of who I am so that my own children are compelled to jealously seek a relationship with Jesus that is vibrant. Thanks for sharing, Melissa. Have a fabulous time with your mom this weekend! T.G.
Melissa,
I appreciate that you DO believe humans can hear audibly from the Lord. I have due to the EXTREME pain, surgeries, and hospital stays in the past two years. Some of it is shared on our website. However, many Christians do not believe this can happen and so I am reluctant to share about it..even though "Heaven" is so glorious and there is MUCH to tell. What I do encourage Christians to do, like you did today, is to read the Bible. Read God's Word. Appreciate what He has left for us.
M
Don't you know?
Jesus said, "So, you believe because you've seen with your own eyes. Even better blessings are in store for those who believe without seeing."
You have some great expectations!

Amen to your post and to your mama's comment!
Love it!
Excellent!

Melissa,
Thank you for that! I remember hearing your mom say in one of her studies some years ago that she was madly "in love" with Jesus. I love Jesus but I continually tell God, "I want THAT! I want to be totally in love with You! Help me!" I see that same passion in you that I see in your mom...and I want that! I know there is no other way than to spend one on one time in His Word and at His feet. Nobody can do it for me. I'm horribly inconsistent with having a set quiet time where nothing is distracting me. I want to just DESIRE to have a quiet time with Him everyday. Does it just start with self-discipline and eventually become desire?? I DO love Him and talk to Him all day long. I just get frustrated with myself over my inconsistent quiet times.
Thank you for the great post girl!
Missy in SC
Amen, sister! What a powerful word about THE WORD! He is life and I pray that we never get over the miracle of divine revelation. He wrote this for us! Praise you, Jesus!
Oh Melissa,
You have a heart just like mine. The best place to find God for me is in the depths of His Word.
I love Him so, thank you for sharing such a sold out, sincere post about how you discovered God for yourself and the wealth of the relationship it brought into your life.
You are a sweet, sweet sister and bring so much to us. We thank God for you.
Blessings
there are none like Him! I feel the same way and have to stay in the word every morning and night or I am so prone to wander.
Melissa,
Thanks for reminding me of that verse in Matthew. So simple, but so needed!
Melissa, you are cool! Wish I was younger and lived in Atlanta so I could hang out with you!
That is good truth girl! Thank you!
I have tears in my eyes. God's timing could not have been more perfect. Thank you for allowing Him to use you so effectively.
Melissa, you go girl! I love to read your thoughts, for you remind me so much of my son. He is a writer who loves God with all his heart. Don't stop now!! We need more! More revelations! You are the real thing!
One day soon, Melissa, we will all sit at a wonderful banquet table. We will be fed the finest of food and the most marvelous of drink. It will be better than any "potluck" we could ever dream up.....even in our wildest dreams... Thank you, dear one for sharing so deeply and intimately from your heart.
Thank you Melissa. Your post was very touching and so true. Thank you and all of the LPM family that do so much for the Kingdom of God.
We love you.
Thanks for sharing! A good word indeed.
Melissa, I thank you so much for the wonderful words that you posted today. I have had a very similar experience in my walk with the Lord and you put it so well! You are much younger than I am but please know that your words ministered to my life and heart. You are a dear! Nancy
Thank you.
I, too, have found myself feeling "distanced" from the Lord as of late...simply because I haven't been sitting at His Feet and listening to Him through His Word. Boy, you hit the nail on the head. I have resolved to get back to it. What a Feast it is, too!
And Beth, your comment gives me soo much hope for the wandering daughter I have as well. Thank you both, dear Sisters!
Oh, sweet mercy! Thanks for the blessing, Melissa!
Just had a thought--do you ever feel the need to explain the term "Siesta" periodically? I know what it means but wonder if newcomers are shaking their heads in confusion. :)
Oh my goodness. I just saw your mom's comment. My 2nd daughter is strong-willed enough to make James Dobson cry too!!
Thank you, thank you, thank you, Beth, for those words of encouragement for my dear Ava!! (I'm copying them into my journal right now!)
Oooohhh Melissa! Beautiful post. That so resonates with me. I met HIM at 25 in a bar half drunk and I never fully recovered. You, my dear, are now that Titus woman from verse one in Titus that says you are a servant of the Word of God for the faith of His people and for the knowledge of the Truth that leads to godliness, changed lives! Love your one ardent passion---"now where is the God of Elijah" and the God of my mother? 2Kings 2:13. You found HIM and you are finding Him. You KNOW HIM or rather you are KNOWN by HIM. Gal. 4:9
i so needed to hear this!! it convicted me of not being in the Word for the past couple months, and it reminded me of how i too can tell a huge difference in me when im in the Word and when im not. thank you!
Oh, I pray for a such an intense craving of the Word! I enjoy reading scripture, but don't crave it. I so want to, though!!! I was also raised in a Christian home, but unlike you, I can't think of a time that I've EVER seen either of my parents do a quiet time. And my dad's a pastor. Now that I'm an adult with kids of my own, I want them to see my read the Word and consistently do a quiet time daily. You know, the whole walk the walk thing. I want Him to be the first thing on my mind when I wake up and the last thing I think of when I go to sleep. I want that craving. Desperately.
I know you thank God daily for the "Titus woman from you know where." It's sad to know that there are so many of us Siestas who don't have that in our lives. I know that'll make you appreciate her even more. You are blessed beyond comprehension. I thank God for you, Melissa, your dad, and of course, your mom.
Thank you Melissa,
I was reading about the lead singer of Korn coming to Christ. He had a beautiful experience. I too was alittle jealous. After reading your post I relized I have felt the same thing you described while reading the Bible.
Thank you Liz H in Oregon
Praise God for his faithfulness. This is a wonderful post and very encouraging to me. I have been feeling so flat lately. Kim B. in AZ
PS I to wish we could have a giant potluck.
Most every night when I get home from work I check my email weather news and LPM BLOG. and I'll watch the end of Letterman then Joyce Meyer and Celebration with Marcus and Joni Lamb. But tonight I didn't turn on the TV at all. I haven't read in the bible much this week just been a busy one it seems. I found myself praying at work about different things and was feeling like I need to get back to reading some in the bible and decided I'd do that tonight and not turn on the TV. Then check the blog and here you are encouraging us to read. I can tell too if I skip out on reading the word. We so need that don't we.
When I first started reading your post I was about half way though and thought which one of you wrote it :) and scrolled down to see. :) I then felt a tear down my cheek because I knew God was talking through you. You all are such a blessing.
Ok if you will excuse me I'm going to go do a little reading before I go to bed.
Love you all
Pam ( Southern Indiana )
Melissa,
What an awesome testimony!!! Thanks for the great reminder of how powerful Scripture is. There truly ain't nothing like it!
Love you!
Kristen
Hey Girl! After reading your post and the comments...it dawned on me that there is no such thing as LUCK for a Christian. So I guess we will have to turn the "Pot-luck" into a "FEAST" on the Word. I offer my home for the get together! Everyone LOVES the beach! :) Right, Siestas?
I guess you will also get to use your "guest room" this weekend. Hey... get that bath tub ready! LOL
Glad to see you got your name right too. :) One last thing... does Colin sing Hank William's song "Hey Good Looking" to you???
AMEN!! God's Word is so amazing! There is nothing out there like it. It is a true divine romance.
You are so precious, thank you so much Melissa.
P.S. I made your chicken enchilada's, & queso dip tonight for bible study and the crowd went wild
Wow! How powerful! I have come to realize that if I don't take the time to open God's Word on a daily basis (preferably in the mornings), I am out of sync all day....like something is missing!
Thanks Melissa! I know exactly what you mean. If I am not in the throws of the Word, even small moments everyday...than the world just pulls me away, one hair & one thought at a time. Your post is so relevant!
~~~Nicole
I love your post, Melissa! I shamefully find myself envious of those who have had such direct encounters with God. I love taking bible studies and get so much out of them, but I also think there is value in just reading through the bible yourself. I started a blog with a group of friends to read through the NT over 9 months (Apr-Nov)--
www.BibleBookClub.blogspot.com
It is a great way to stay in the Word and stay accountable. Anyone is welcome to join us. We're starting the book of John in July.
Thank you Melissa - I agree with the others, love it when you post!
Thanks Melissa!
I too need to be reminded about this. I am finishing Daniel (i'm facilitating this time) and need to be reminded that the Word is ALIVE! my fave quote is by Spurgeon, it is " Defending the Bible is like defending a lion, you don't defend the lion you let him loose, He'll defend Himself."
Let the lion loose siestas! He's true to defend!!!
Love y'all.
Holly in SC
Melissa - bless you girl, you are solidly grounded on the Rock of Ages - Hallelujah and Praise His Name.
Isaiah 40:8 - The WORD of our God stands forever.
Hope to see you at Deeper Still in Atlanta - since you are now a Gawja Girl!
Much love,
GEORGIA JAN
My apologies for this extra comment, dear Melissa, but I have to say that boy, am I glad I have no plans to become a writer! I've actually managed to use the oh-so-specific adjective "HUGE" THREE times in the span of ONE paragraph, and each instance in all caps, too...!!! how embarrassing!!! Sorry Siestas!
Maria cristina :)
melissa-
thanks for honesty in your testimony and post. i, too, grew up in a similar household where i heard about Jesus all the time. and even though i made Him my own through a decision of faith as an older child, it wasn't until i dove into His Word wholeheartedly that i really came to know Him. just recently i realized that i've been married almost 7 years, i'm 28 years old, and i've lost a little of my passionate love. and you hit the nail on the head. when i'm out of touch with His Word, i'm out of touch with Him. thanks for bringing that truth home today. i needed the kick in the pants.
i'm headed to your new hometown tomorrow for deeper still. i'm guessing you'll be there too! be blessed.
Your Mom is also the one who inspired me to Love God through loving his word. I can tell you the day I heard Beth on founders Week talking about The Word and how it radically changed my life. I am so thankful for this ministry that has literally saved my life from The Pit!! Awesome Post!!
Melissa, what a blessing it was to read this testimony from you this morning. I could have written it...your experience seems so similar to mine. I always find it interesting to hear the faith journey of someone who grew up in a solid, Christian home. It seems there are unique challenges that go hand-in-hand with the blessings. Thanks for sharing! How thankful I too am for the living Word of God and the Holy Spirit who testifies in us!
What a great post! I consider myself a Siesta - tho I don't often post - I do have a question... maybe you've addressed somewhere else - but as a mother of three (10,9,5) - I am curious how to start instilling personal quiet time for my children - so that they can make their relationship with Jesus their own - personal - real... We do family devotions every morning - serve in a start-up church - and my kids sing along to Christian songs. But I am at a place where I want their desires to know Christ to superseed my desires for them to know Christ - and I want to encourage this relationship - not force it. (As a fairly young Christian - I don't my upbringing to rely on) Any suggestions?
You ladies just radiate Jesus - thanks for sharing your revleations with us!
Amanda
Melissa, thanks so much for the encouragement! It's easy to get dry and disconnected.
And Beth, I'm looking forward to seeing you in HOTlanta this weekend!
Thanks for your words. I have been teaching VBS this week to Kindergarten kids. They have certainly been a challenge, but I have had really one prayer for them all week.-- That God would be REAL to them as they grow in Him --Not just words on a page, but a real, living, moving, life changing presence that they were intimate with. A God that they knew moved in their own lives, not just in the lives of the Israelites were have learned about this week. Thanks for your wise words Melissa. Praise God He is REAL.
Amy
What a beautiful post Melissa. Your faith in Jesus had to become real to you ... living with the Titus woman from ... wasn't the answer. How wonderful it is that God reveals Himself through His word.
I grew up in a home where I never saw a Bible but believed in God... I had an insatiable thirst to know more about Him... I thank God that the Bible has become my blueprint for life.
May God continue to bless your life as Living Proof blesses so many.
AMEN! AMEN! AMEN! SIESTA!
The Journey continues ~
Melissa, I sincerely appreciate you speaking from an honesty and passionate heart.
I have had both experiences that you shared. I am one of the siesta's that has heard the voice of God and also one that wanted to really know HIM.
I arise each morning "early" and spend time reading, talking and praying with my BEST FRIEND!
I am like your mother, I tell on others and my BEST FRIEND listens!
When my feelings are hurt, I tell my BEST FRIEND and find comfort in that.
I have two sons, both at university. My oldest, has studied philosophy and been told by many professors that the Christian faith is a belieft where people don't think for themselves. He has been exploring all religions
( he grew up in a very strong Baptist background) He would come home and question our faith, and finally, my husband and I said to him " Seek it out for yourself" and that is just what he did.
Our youngest son, is very involved in the InterVarsity at university and attends a Celebration group at a college town church. He stands very strong in his faith walk.
Bless you for being REAL to all of us Internet Siesta's! THANK YOU for touching us through your loving and may I said GORGEOUS face and voice!
As I tell Beth and Amanda ~ PLEASE continue to
"Carry the Light" for JESUS CHRIST
If you could see the tears rolling down my face, you would know just what you have done. Never ever doubt yourself or your calling. You are truly making a difference.
My time with the Lord in His Word this morning was delightful. I love how He shows me Scripture after Scripture to compare to make sure that I get what He is teaching. He is so faithful. Dee
Whohoo!! Amen Siesta!!! You teach it and remind us!!! If you want to know God, there is only one way, in His Word!! Do you suppose He did that deliberately?? :) Praise His Holy Name....I am in love with Him!! You go girl!! We are going to be so blesed by your contributions to LPM Bible Studies!!
Blessings from the Bible Bunny in MI
Dear Melissa, thank you for your partnering in the work to help us catch fire and to get us to drink deeply of the well of God's Word. In Jesus' Love Kathy Knoblock
Melissa, thank you so much for this post. I had literally just sat down my Bible after reading Luke 11:9-13 and then opened up to your post - God is so good. I have a friend who "hears" God and has said multiple times that she has the gift of "hearing" which has always left me feeling a bit out of the holy loop...As a result, I have cried out and pleaded to God to have me be able to "hear" Him like her. Thankfully,it was in a Bible study, "Deeper Still", that your mother said something that rang so loud in my ear about how you do indeed have access to the voice of God - the Bible! Your post confirms my heart's desire being answered by a Father who will not withhold His ever-teaching Spirit if His Word abides in me. Thank you.
Bless you Melissa and AMEN!!!! Your post was exactly what I needed this morning! What a blessing!!
Thank you!
Thanks for the encouragement, Melissa! I needed that today!! The last sentence of your post about an old-fashioned potluck filled my heart with such joy. I just began to picture the greatest Siesta Fiesta ever -- the one we'll get to have on the other side of glory. Oh yes, I can't wait for the wedding feast of the Lamb - but that's not what I'm talking about. After the big Wedding Feast, don't you think that Christ will indulge us all and let us have a big Siesta dinner party - just girls ;). That might be the first time I get to see so many of your sweet faces & put my arms around everyone - and I can't wait!! Even thinking about it gives me such chills. We'll have to invite the King of Kings, of course, because we'll want it to be a royal affair (not that it could be any different in Heaven). Love to all!
Melissa, you give me hope for my headstrong child! I loved your words today . They were powerful. Blessings to you .
Melissa, I love that you shared this today. I have prayed for so many women (including myself) these same words that you speak of and ask that God reveal more of Himself to them (and me) through His word. These verses speak truth:
Psalm 27:4 ’One thing I ask of the LORD, this is what I seek: that I may dwell in the house of the LORD all the days of my life, to gaze upon the beauty of the LORD and to seek him in his temple.’
Jeremiah 6:16 ‘This is what the LORD says: "Stand at the crossroads and look; ask for the ancient paths, ask where the good way is, and walk in it, and you will find rest for your souls.’
Ephesians 1:17 ‘I keep asking that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the glorious Father, may give you the Spirit of wisdom and revelation, so that you may know him better.’
Colossians 1:9 ‘For this reason, since the day we heard about you, we have not stopped praying for you and asking God to fill you with the knowledge of his will through spiritual wisdom and understanding.’
James 1:5 ’If any of you lacks wisdom, he should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to him.’
Love, Amy in OK
Melissa, there is nothing that can compare to the "experience" of a revelation from the WORD! Are you familiar with the song Ancient Words? You would love it! You are such a blessing and a bit of a mystery yourself, keep on writing! Shalom
Thanks a ton Mel! Anyone call you that?
I read every night to my six year old about the miracles of God's word and then I don't really look at my own Bible that way sometimes. (I'm such a visual gal. I want pictures in my 'big girl Bible' too!) Then I have a 13 year old that is questioning faith and doesn't feel the connect with God, like you mention. Thanks for reminding me that 'God's got it!'
Time to dive into 'No Other Gods' today;)
What a beautiful word!! Preach on sister (or should I say siesta)!! -terri
Thanks for the encouragement and reminder that there "aint no book like the Good Book". Also, I believe we WILL have a big potluck one day...all around a big huge table sharing about the Lord and how He revealed Himself to us over and over again. I'm looking forward to that day, as I'm sure are you! Blessings.
Wow! I don't know which was more encouraging - your entry, Melissa or all the siesta's entries!! What a testamony to God. What a blessing to be able to glean from so many amazing daughters of the King!
This is, as usual so timely. It is so true about the power of the Word and I was encouraged in a fresh way. It will so encourage my daughters as well. We are all doing 'no other gods'. One that has always, it seems, to know God but can struggle so at times and one that was so strong-willed that I knew that when Jesus got ahold of her there would be no turning back for her! (When she was little, after a time of discipline she would proclaim that she had won because we were angry and she still got to do what she wanted to do!) And now she loves the Lord and His Word. And one much younger daughter who isn't quite old enough but gets to glean from our conversations.
But what was really funny is that God has been talking to me in that 'just-a-moment-before-you- completely-wake up' about my idols and it has been very profound and eye-opening. (is that redunant??)
It is not an usual occurance and I am careful not to attribute every dream to God! ;~) In fact I dreamed this morning that Beth's study on Esther was like a last hurrah and you were on your way to continue on!! Like I said, I am careful not to attribute every dream to God! (but thought it interesting!) :~)
I am so thankful that we are priviledged to be able to read so many personal encouragements and living testamonies of God's faithfulness!
mk
Amen, sister !!!
I grew up going to church, and even enjoying most of it, but I wasn't so blessed as to understand the Bible until the first "Believing God" came out online. And, I did it online from just NW of Houston, but I realized that that was a "good thing", because I could pause the videos long enough to simply find the Scriptures that your Mom was asking us to find. =) And, I had just turned 35 years old that September.
However, I had NO idea what doing just 1 in-depth Bible study with the Lord, Beth, via the computer would do to me... He caused the Holy Spirit to come straight through your dear Mom via that computer!!! And, once it was finished, I was so bored I almost couldn't stand it, so via an Amy Grant paper newsletter, I saw that she had recommended your Mom's book, Praying God's Word to us, which apparently Travis had given to her earlier. So, I hopped in my car and dashed off to the nearest Lifeway bookstore and bought this book that literally changed my life... I began to read it, but was not completely understanding it, yet the Lord wouldn't let me put it down!!!
Then, I found out that your Mom's website said that she was doing another "live" study in Houston in January, and I was So excited. It was "Beloved Disciple", and, as usual, the Holy Spirit worked straight through her, almost as if I were the one and only person in this huge sanctuary filled with 3,000 dear women! And, once that was over, I finally got the chance to "meet" Miss Beth live and in person at her "Wedding supper of the Lamb" night. Yet, strangely enough, God would not even let me speak to her, except on paper, as I had come down with a very bad case of laryngitis the previous Saturday, when I had decided that if this study was going to end, I knew that I had to choose another one to study, and since the Praying God's Word book was based on a study called "Breaking Free", the Lord gave me enough $$ to purchase the taped set and the workbook for it.
AND, half way through that study [between God/His Word, Beth, and myself], God literally awakened my senses and helped break open my heart to allow His awesome love to pour in, and within less than a month, I found someone from Beth's church to teach me about "what salvation in Christ Jesus/being born again, saved, etc." meant, and I gave my heart and life over to the Lord in April 2003. And, I praise God for doing that work in my heart previously to allow me to question things enough to want to really KNOW what salvation was/is.
And, whether it is one of your Mom's studies, or a mini book Bible study, if it is biblically sound, I go ahead and study His Word using some kind of study, as often as I am able to do so.
And, I am actually doing 2 Bible studies right now; "The Patriarch's" via cds, and one called "Praying Our Goodbyes" by Joyce Rupp, as my dear Daddy passed away at the end of March due to complications from Leukemia. =( So, I am trying really hard to begin to understand His ways in that situation, even though I know for sure that my Dad was saved, and is with Jesus now, but it is still so very difficult for me...
So, unfortunately, I am not able to add your Mom's summer blog study to those two, as the Lord has provided for me to go back to school to renew my teaching license this summer [6 semester credits/2 in depth 3 week courses].
But, I try my best to pray that the Lord would help me by taking my thoughts, words, actions, etc. captive to His will for my life every day, because I KNOW that I simply cannot do all of these things without HIM taking charge !
Thanks for letting me share...
In Christ's Love,
Jennifer
P.s. Hi Miss Beth! Thank you for all that all of Y'all are doing at LPM !!! And, thank you for sharing with us through this blog.
Melissa,
Thank you for this post. I, too, grew up in a Christian home and am thankful to this day for all the positive influences. But, I had to fall in love with Jesus all by myself. For years I did not get how people were so pumped by God's word - it was boring to me.
At the risk of sounding like a "brown noser", it was not until I did my first Beth Moore study that I finally understood the wisdom, the peace, the understanding, and the overall awesomeness of my God and His word.
I truly look forward to the time I spend reading my Bible because I never know what kind of nugget of truth I will walk away with.
I do get a kick out of reading your blog entries and talking to my sister (the Jerusalem college one) - your absolute love of the Word (the "begats" and all) is incredibly infectious!
Thank you again for this post and for reminding us that God's Word is intentional and relevant to our every single day!
Melissa, Thank you for putting so well in words what I often try to say to my groups. The Word of God really does speak a now Word to us regularly and miraculously! And I am thanking God for your Titus Mom and the ministry God allows you share with all of us! Susan
I have tried before to read the Bible cover to cover, but this year I am actually getting somewhere. Most days, I spend my lunch reading online at work. I continue to ask God to help me to not just read the words so that I can mark something of my To Do list, but to understand what I read. He has been faithful and I love getting to know Him more through His Word!
An off-subject question...saw a "Quick Word" mini daily the other day and want to know where Beth's head is! Loved the shoes, but wanted to see the hair too!
Mellisa, you spoke to my heart! I always believed God was here, but was never really "wowed" by Him. Then I, too, went through a period of wanting "proof." Then felt disappointed when His will didn't line up with mine, like He really didn't care about my "needs." Well, He knew my needs were much more than a "yes" stamp on my prayers, and He took me on a journey that is too lengthy to describe here, but WOW! Now I feel like experiencing Him is like an amplifier. You feel the humm, and it keeps getting turned up a notch at a time, with some big Ka-blooms here and there. But that humm gets more exciting all the time. Can't you feel it?! Thanks, Melissa!
Gail
I wouldn't want a dream vision anyway. A dream I could doubt afterwards, but the bible is real and in PRINT. how can I doubt what God has protected all these years.
Melissa-
Thank you for your love of Jesus. I, too, can not get enough of Him. He is so glorious! Thank you for your insightful words. They inspire me to continue my dedication to the Lord and know that each night I fought a good fight, finished my daily race, and never gave up my faith.
Much love to you. (One day in heaven we will all meet for our perfect pot luck meal and it will be the tastiest we have ever had!)
How totally right you are Melissa! I think too often we forget our "story" andthe true miracle that it is! Thanks for reminding me to think about mine more often!
Love You!
Amanda in SC
Melissa, WOW, thank you so much for sharing what God spoke to you. Thank you for being so open and honest. Oh how I love God's word, and I thank you for your encouragement to be in His word. I love how you wanted to experience God and find Him for yourself and not just try to live off of your parents' faith. How I pray my children will love Him and seek Him with all of their heart, all of their souls, all of their strength, and all of their minds. You are a blessing!!!
Melissa, you spoke to my heart as well! I too have often wondered why God hadn't "spoken" to me. I too believe He absolutely speaks to many, but I hadn't really experienced it. Then one morning we went to church. On our way in I thought that very thought-a little questioning why I hadn't experienced God speaking to me. As we waited for the pastor to speak, words appeared on the overheard screens---"Today's message will be silent. Bible verses will appear on the screen and questions for you to ponder silently with the Lord." I got goosebumps and still do when I remember that Sunday morning. God "spoke" to me so loudly in the silence, with no words other than His words on the screen--it was like being hit in the back of the head! I try to listen to Him through His word when reading my BIble-God is Awesome!
Amen!!! Your words really spoke to me - love the quote about the bible keeping you from sin or sin keeping you from the bible!!!
And Beth, thank you for your encouraging words about strong willed kids. I NEEDED to hear that. God is Good and Faithful - always!!
Love y'all - can't wait for Minneapolis!!!!
Melissa, I don't know if you agree or if anyone has said this, but I think you have the same gift of communication as your mom. I LOVE the way she writes and speaks and I loved what you wrote today, amen! I have a new baby and my girlfriends all BLOG. I can't seem to find the time to learn how to set one up so they can keep up with our lives. Then here I find out that the Titus-woman-from-heaven, haha, has time to blog? I need to get with the program! God bless, Heather G. Charlotte NC
Amen and amen! I have already shared your post with several people who needed to hear these words. I am in awe of the power of the Word! Thank you.
Amen Siesta! There's a Divine revelation just waiting for me to pick up my Bible. Your Mom's comment is so encouraging for me to hear because I have one of those strong willed children!
AMEN
well, Beth and Melissa what you wrote about your Melissa is encouraging to me though I am not a parent, it is still encouraging. There is hope for all, for all for all that seek Him with the whole heart, that will ask again and again and again and again. And He knows us like the Psalm 139. Sitting down, raising up. His thoughts toward me are numerous...oh my! I do under estimate His GREAT LOVE FOR ME! NOTHING I CAN DO, NOTHING I CAN DO, NOTHING I CAN DO TO EARN THIS.
Allison
Melissa,
That was so powerful I had to copy and paste it to my kids' emails.
Thanks for sharing your heart and your recipes. (I love the Pastry Queen too!)
All glory to the One who alone is worthy!!!
This post was a real blessing. Thanks. I had just read that quote in Howard Hendrick's book, Living By the Book. The online quotation web site said it was from D.L. Moody, but I don't know for sure. Does anyone know for sure? The quote I am referring to is, "This book will keep you from sin or sin will keep you from this book."
Anonymous,
Howard Hendricks does comment that someone wrote "this book will keep you from sin, or sin will keep you from this book" on the fly-leaf of his Bible. Both D.L. Moody and John Bunyan are quoted as referencing these words. I quoted John Bunyan because he supposedly had these words written in his Bible in the 17th century and D.L. Moody lived in the 19th century. At the end of the day, who knows?
All I know, is that the words ring true in my own life...
Thank you so much for your testimony, Melissa. I am so excited that you are progressing in leaps and bounds in your service to the Lord. What a gift of writing you've been given! And what a blessing to have a mom who knew the Lord and the Word so well! And you are so right, the Word of God is living and active! When I suffered with depression and panic, it was the Word of God that divided my soul (my mixed-up mind and emotions) from my spirit (my inner man that recognized the Truth when it heard it). I'm so thankful God led me to your mom's Believing God Bible study back in 2004 where I first learned of Hebrews 4:12. I had prayed for God's help and a few days later a friend invited me to go with her to do the study at my church. I had not been to church in 2 years. But I knew this was a God-thing. It was there I learned who my God was and what He could do and who I was in Christ and what I could believe and count on in His Word. It was the beginning of my recovery.I latched onto the Truth (expressed so lovingly and completely in that study--thank you, Beth--it was as though God were speaking directly to me)and after doing homework for 3 weeks, I experienced peace in a way I had thought was lost to me. By following Beth's teachings and suggestions for a daily encounter with God, I grew closer to Jesus and in my faith. I am still clinging to the Word and to Jesus to this day. Glory to God!
I think we tend to make things more complicated. It's just that simple, read, pour over, meditate, study God's word. May He be forever glorified!
Theresa
Thank you, Melissa, for sharing.
I find God so real to me when I am doing a study (usually one of your moms) and then something else I read confirms it and then someone shares something that is reminiscent of both. I love how God does that! Right now, I am doing "A Woman's Heart, God's Dwelling Place" (the revised version)and reading "The Shack" and then your post. It is amazing how much they relate. Of course - God is relational! It's God's stunning affectability!
Blessings! Love!
Hey friends,
By this time many, if not most, of you have probably stopped reading comments from this post. But I wanted to offer something. After hearing the hearts of so many wanting to be more disciplined in reading the Word, knowing that the Word IS powerful and life giving and everything we have EVER thought it to be, I want to say that divine revelation IS for you. And you don't need to "go through" anyone else to get it.
I struggled too for a long time with even wanting to be in the Word. Once I was there, I found it to be wonderful but often times I didn't know where to start or "how to" get what I was looking for.
Well, I want to offer anyone something I have written to maybe help you as you seek to know HIM more. I wrote/designed/whatever a pretty simple Bible study TOOL that could be just a catalyst for something more with Jesus through the Word. It's the way that I went from not knowing what in the world to do with an open Bible to WOW, His Word IS amazing! Making me want more of it. If you're interested, email me and I can send it to you in a Word file.
mustard5@sbcglobal.net
So very true, Melissa. The scriptures became alive to me when speaking them out loud over my fearful child allowed her to fall asleep peacefully.
Thank you for this poignant reminder.
Robyn
Truth sister! God's Word has absolutely served as divine intervention in my life. My heart aches for others to know this for themselves! Current favorite verse-Jeremiah 23:29 Does not my Word burn like fire says the LORD is it not like a mighty hammer that smashes a rock to pieces! I am so with you on missing it when i have not put it first in my life. I know we are not under the law, i know there is no condemnation, i know there is grace but nothing satisfies my everything like His Word! Thank You LORD!
P.S. I'll bring the spinach & artichoke dip!
Thank you, I don't think I ever heard, so clearly.
Melissa,
Thank you for the awesome post.
I grew up in a Christian home....a preacher's kid. I've never not known about God and His love for me. I remember being 14 years old and getting a Living Bible for Christmas. I read, underlined & highlighted Scripture all through that Bible. I was into my 40's when I first heard of your mom and I attended my first LPM conference and then began doing her Bible studies. Her enthusiasm and genuine love for the Lord caused me to want something I didn't have - a heart to heart relationship with Him.
I loved Him always and I read my Bible and prayed, but your mom had something that was so inviting. Her teaching has impacted my life in a dramatic way.
I am so pleased that you are a part of LPM and are helping research and write the studies with your mom. What a blessing you, Amanda and Keith are to her.
Thank you for everything. Our group can't wait until Esther.
Love & blessing to you and your family,
Valerie
Thanks for this post, Melissa! I really needed to hear this.
I do have a quick question. Is the "Lit - A passion for Scripture" study in Houston this fall going to just be for the church or is it going to turn into a Bible study for the rest of us? ;o) I would love to go to it, however, I live in NC so would not be able to. :o) Just wondering....
Have a blessed day!
Oh to have had a mother who knew the word and ENCOURAGED you to know it also! That is the most wonderful gift to give a child...Your eternal life with Christ! I found the LORD during a major crises at age sixteen and I heard Him say, "I am with you always!" Praise God, He heard my plea and saved me from self destruction.
Thank you so much for the reminder and encouragement! I must go read!
Just what I and my 17-year-old daughter needed. I've printed it off for her to read. I want so much for her to experience Jesus Christ for herself.
Thank You so much for your words of encouragement-that is exactly what I needed to hear. I have such a struggle with believing that I am saved and just believing the whole Christian thing all together. I have good days where I am walking and believing in my faith in Jesus and then there are those other days where I am just confused for a living! But after reading your blog I have come to realize that reading the Bible is good but if I do not apply it to my life, then what exactly is the point. I need to remember that the Word is not only for everyone else but for little old me as well-Thank you and God Bless!
One thing that radically changed my life was hearing Beth Moore say "God can change your want to". At the time I loved God but there were areas of my life I didn't want to change. When I began to pray for God to change my "want to" and to give me a passion for Him and His word my life was transformed. Not overnight but over a course of time He has (and still is)defining the desires of my heart. This is what I tell my kids when they don't desire obedience, "Ask God to change your desires!" If they will do that He will fill them with a passion that will blow them away! I know, it happened to me!!!
Thank you for this ministry (and your testimony) it such an encouragement....
I was talking about the good word from Melissa's to some friends and wanted to make clear, in light of my previous comment, that the Bible IS the truth and everything has to be looked at in the light of whether it lines up with Scripture for it to be truth.
(Dreams included!) I wasn't trying to prophesy (I had been thinking and talking to a friend about what Bible studies to do in the fall and our excitement for Esther) which can account for my dream. :~)Just thought it was humerous that that morning there was the insightful blog from Melissa. I, with a multitude of others, love Beth and her studies and are blessed by the insights by both her delightful daughters. Sorry if my attempt at humor offended anyone!!
Melissa -
You're so cool!
Your Mama did alright...
God Bless,
M
Melissa I loved your post. It is so funny how God speaks differently to all of us. I am the opposite from you. I have always had a hard time with Bible study. My mind wanders, I never know exactly what God is saying. I really have to be led and taught to see and hear God through scripture. He uses my minister and has used your mom to teach me and help me with scripture, but I get lost when I'm studying alone.
However, whenever I need a hug or His closenss if I ask in prayer, God is so quick to blanket me with His presence. He whispers to me that He is with me and that He loves me. I can hear Him smiling, if that makes any sense at all. I am truly fortunate in this regard. I love having the gift of a tuned ear to His soft voice.
We should make a pack... I'll work on hearing Him through scripture and you work on tuning your ear to His voice. Deal? - Marla
and what a potluck that will be when "man at table will sit down"
Melissa,
What a wonderful post! I have found that the more time I spend with God, the more I "hear" him.
Thank you for sharing. You are such a blessing to so many of us with your honesty!
Beth;
Robert Morris said, "You never fail a test with God. You just keep taking it over and over again until you pass it."
I cannot seem to pass the test of "How To Deal With People Who Want Me To Be Their BFF (Best Friends Forever)."
I have friends that as I encourage them they become more and more clingy and needy. It's happen to me repeatedly. I'm trying to set boundaries, but have not been very successful (without hurting their feelings).
How does one tell another to "back off" lovingly?
If you feel led, could you address this in your blog. I KNOW this must happen to you all the time.
God Bless.
Marla, the anonymous poster, third from the bottom...email me. I might be able to help you out with learning how to be alone with God. I've written a "tool" for this very thing.
