Siesta Cookbook
Ladies, our siesta Holly/CrownLaidDown is compiling a cookbook from the recipes we have all shared on the LPM blog. Isn't that fun? You can find out all the details (cost, how to get one, etc.) on Patty and Kim's Siesta Fiesta blog, specifically here and here.
The cookbook is going to help raise money for the drilling of a water well through Life Outreach International. Isn't that awesome? You may recall that my parents have done some mission trips to Africa through LOI. (Read here and here.) In fact, they are at the Life Today studios taping some programs this weekend.
Holly will not publish any of the recipes without getting permission first. If you would like the recipe(s) you've posted to be included in the cookbook, please email her directly with your recipe at chrishollysmith@msn.com or simply write "yes" in a comment. She will match your comment to recipes that have been posted. If you do not comment or email Holly, she will not use your recipe.
Holly also needs some pithy family sayings to go along with your recipes, about 32 words or less, including some good advice or just downright funny things your family or your grandma says. You can include these in your comments or emails.
There will be a contest for the cover design in case anyone is interested in participating. Once again, check out Patty and Kim's Siesta Fiesta blog for details. Surely we have some artists out there! Have a great weekend, everyone!

Awesome! I missed commenting my recipes before. Can I submit some now, or is it too late?
Yes! You may use my recipe. It was ribeye steaks with roasted asparagus and tomatos. Julie Elrod or juliebuggs75@yahoo.com.
"I've got my speed-a-rink-tum up today!"
Speed-a-rink-tum: a term my sweet grandmother Muddie uses when she feels good, peppy, and a little bit fiesty.
I WAS JUSTING THINKING TODAY....We need a Seista Cookbook!! I will send recipes!!!

Give your "man" lots of loving, and he'll never go looking. My Mom...bless her heart.
That's awesome I will buy a cookbook since I can't contribute to digging a water well I want to though I guess another thing on my list I want to accomplish with my finaces and doing stuff for the Lord! I got to get out of Nursing school first. Thanks!
Yes you may use my recipes. I can't remember exactly which ones I have put on here. I am so sorry for that. I do know for sure one of them was for a Strawberry spinach salad. I always get rave reviews when I serve that salad. Thanks for doing this. I think it is so cool that you came up with the idea of using the proceeds for helping other in need. Kim B. in AZ
Thanks Amanda for the information!!
Much love,
Sharon, NC
I am excited. I'll try to submit some artwork.

What a wonderful idea. You bet you can use my recipes.
How fun!! I didn't submit a recipe, but I would definitely like a cookbook!
On another note, I still have a ticket to Deeper Still in Atlanta next weekend that I can't use. If anyone would like to have it, please let me know. melnsmoky1@yahoo.com
Brilliant! What an awesome idea The Siesta Cookbook because those Chicken Enchilladas look divine. God Bless!
Warmly, CarolinaMama
I am a terrible cook, just good enough to keep my family alive, but I think it's absolutely fabulous that your proceeds are going to drill water for those in need. It's a fantastic idea! May God bless your endeavor.
In Him,
Nancy
can we still send some recipes I haven't sent any i dont think I have God bless siesta love in Christ Victoria NC
Yep, you can use my recipes, whatever they were...I think there was a pasta one and maybe an eclair pudding type thing. Best wishes!
Here's a funny thing my dear sweet grandma who is now in heaven used to say. After a big meal when we were all stuffed, she'd say "I'm full as a tick!" We still say that today and grin. (My daughter says it's gross!)
Yes, it was some easy chicken bake.
When Grandma was asked why she cooked so many meals a day, she replied, "people are happy when they eat and I like to see happy people."
Don't know where this next one came from originally, but it's been around for awhile:
Recipe for Happiness
Take two heaping cups of patience, one heart full of love, two hands full of generosity, a dash of laughter, one head full of understanding, sprinkle generously with kindness, add plenty of faith and mix well; spread over a period of a lifetime and serve everybody you meet.
And lots of great Bible verses like: He that is of a merry heart hath a continual feast. Proverbs 15:15
I am all over that like a duck on a june bug!! Nothing like home cooking and sayings! Can't wait to see.
You can use my recipe but I am not sure what I submitted!
I know I did not submit a recipe for boiled peanuts, but one of the funniest things I have ever heard a grandma say about boiled peanuts was a warning..." You have to be careful--boiled peanuts'll suck your brain right down to your tongue."
I laugh everytime I pass a roadside stand selling boiled peanuts!!!!
mine was the french toast recipe. pls use...
my fave saying is "it's better than a sharp stick in the eye." yow!
thanks for doing this...
Yes, You can use my recipe...I think I posted Mexican Lasagna.
What fun!! Can't wait to get the Siesta Cookbook!!
Hey Im so excited! I love cookbooks, and what could be better than one from recipes from my Siestas.
I was thinking we should wait until Melissa has spent a little more time in the cooking cult;) or else leave a couple blank pages after each section for new recipes. We did this for a family cookbook, and it's SO special!! I will definitely buy a couple!!
What a fabulous idea!! If you decide you need more recipes I didn't submit, but have a couple of very popular ones.
Also, a suggestion, if you print the recipes on a half sheet of 8x11 paper and then two or three hole punch them across the top and we can find notebooks to fit them in, we can add recipes as we go.....I have one from our Christian radio station and every year we get to add new ones....They are broken down into categories, like soups/casseroles, desserts, appetizers, etc.
I don't want to add complications, but I love to add to a cookbook.
Looking forward to purchasing one. Thanks Siesta's for all your hard work to come.....
Blessings,
Bible Bunny in MI
Fantastically wonderful idea! I think this cookbook will definitely be a best seller! I LOVE that it will be helping the Water For Life project with Life Outreach.
God bless

What a great idea! On Mothers Day weekend, with a few other friends, walked a 1/2 marathon to raise money for the wells via Life Outreach! We called ourselves "Team Living Water" and raised over $2200!!
Praise the Lord....
PS will we be able to order the cookbooks through LPM?
You go, Holly! What an undertaking, and yet I'm not surprised in the least!
I might just email you with a thing or two...
Sounds cool!

MICROWAVE CHOCOLATE PIE
1 cup sugar
1/4 cup cornstarch
3 Tbsp cocoa
2 c. milk
2 egg yolks, beaten (save whites for meringue)
3 T. margarine
1 tsp. vanilla extract
1 baked 9-inch pie shell
In a two-quart bowl for microwaving mix sugar, cornstarch, salt and cocoa. Add milk and beaten egg yolks; continue mixing until mixture is smooth. Microwave four minutes, stir.
Microwave three minutes, stir.
Microwave two minutes, stir.
Add margarine and flavoring and stir until well mixed. Pour into baked pie shell.
MERINGUE
2 egg whites
4 Tbsp sugar
1/2 tsp vanilla
Beat egg whites, gradually adding 4 tablespoons sugar till peaks. Fold in vanilla. Spoon over pie and brown in 300-325 degree oven.
******
CHERRY CRUMB CAKE
1 cup Crisco (white works best)
1 cup Miracle Whip (or any whipped) margarine
2 3/4 cup sugar
5 eggs
3 cups cake flour
1 cup milk
2 teaspoons vanilla flavoring
1 tablespoon butter flavoring
Cream first three ingredients together well. Then add eggs one at a time. Alternate adding 1 cup of flour at a time with milk. Add flavorings. Mix well. Pour batter into greased and floured pans. Makes four nine-inch layers. Bake at 300 degrees until toothpick comes out clean when inserted into the center of the cake. Remove from pan. Set aside to cool completely before icing.
Icing
Beat 2 egg whites until stiff (set aside)
3/4 cup Crisco (white Crisco works best)
1 box 10x confectioner’s sugar
1 tablespoon pure lemon extract
2 6-oz. packages of frozen coconut (slightly thawed)
8 oz. jar maraschino cherries (drained and chopped)
Mix Crisco and sugar together, adding just enough egg whites to make the icing spread-able. Even if you do not use all the egg whites, remember not to get the icing too thin! Add the remainder of the ingredients. Stir well and ice cake.
"I'm not sure how much, I never measure!"
This statement is from my mom. Whenever I tried to make biscuits, they never turned out like hers! I asked her to write me a recipe and she told me she didn't know the measurements because she never measures! She's the best cook I know but she makes it hard to imitate her dishes...
Ok, I did not submit a recipe, but my grandmother always gives me recipes and at the bottom of EVERY SINGLE ONE she write, "Kissin' don't last, cookin' do".
Love

Yes! I think I sent 2 Southwestern Muffins and the old fashioned cobbler recipe.
Great idea. My daughter put together a family cookbook after my Mom died 4 years ago and we have had to reorder after selling the first order of 200. Our proceeds went to the American Cancer Society Relay for Life in honor of her. Her favorite saying when we were "sort of feeling too sick to go to school" was:
"Get up and stir around and you'll feel better"
Worked every time!
Can we still submit recipes?
Nancy
i don't remember if i submitted anything, but if so, you can use it.
That is too cool! I'll buy one:) I think maybe I could try to find a recipe somewhere-it wouldn't be my own, I still get all my recipes from my in-laws and Betty Crocker:)
(and now Melissa and the siestas:)

I didn't leave a recipe, but my favorite Grandma Barb quote, "What would you like to be when you grow up?" My answer,"the queen", her reply, "the queen doesn't fart".

Hey Amanada:
Are there special T-shirts and totes we could order for the event in August. My friend and I are coming and we would really like to order them.
my email is lbredhead@aol.com
Oh absolutely, please use the one I submitted. It was the cheesy baked potato. You used a packet of Hidden Valley Ranch dressing mix and put it and the cut up potato's in a baking bag and mix thoroughly and then bake in oven. When done sprinkle cheese on top and let melt.
I am so excited. Can't wait for this recipe book.
God Bless
Hello ladies,
Here we go. I will give you the recipe I use the most in my life. I have this for breakfast, lunch and dinner sometimes. I have lived on it for over a week before.
Here we go.
Get a large soup bowl or mixing bowl depending on how hungry you are. Pour your favorite cereal in the bowl being careful not to spill on the counter as this takes away from the time saving aspect of this recipe.
Here is where it gets tough. Pick out the milk you want to use (whole, skim, 2 percent, 1 percent, or something called silk) and pour it on the cereal until you start seeing the milk coming through the cereal.(again being careful not to spill on the counter).
Now get a large spoon especially if you have chosen something like bite size mini wheats. A small spoon just won't do. If you want really get crazy you can add straberry's or bananas. This I usually do only for company.
Then eat until your heart or belly's content.
Have a great week and yes you can use my recipe.
Janice Meyer
Nancy, Yes please submit recipes to my email (chrishollysmith at msn dot com) through August 8th. I will gladly use them!
Janice, You CRACK. ME. UP!
lbredhead, there were t-shirts and totes for sale through the Siesta Fiesta blog--linked on the left hand side bar of the LPM blog. I am not sure if they are still taking orders, though. Ask Patty.
Love y'all!

What an awesome, awesome idea! Don't think I submitted a recipe.
Here's a funny little saying I heard...it may be old news, but I had never heard it before and it cracked me up...
"Marriage advice:Never go to bed angry...stay up and fight!" ; )

I don't know about you girls, but is seems that God is always providing us with a soundtrack for our bible studies….well, I heard this song this afternoon and am sure it will need to be our theme song for “No Other Gods”- Attached is the YouTube video so you can hear the words (the video is nothing special) but the words align perfectly with the study. It is “Lose My Soul” by Toby Mac with Kirk Franklin and Mandisa…wow!
My favorite part is a prayer towards the end of the song:
“Lord forgive us when we get consumed by the things of this world, that fight for our love and passion. As our eyes are wide on you, grant us the priviledge of your world view. May your kingdom be what wakes us up and lays us down.”
It starts out with:
“Father God, I am clay in your hands, help me to stay that way through all life’s demands.”
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jsZAwZi-x5U
Beth, I know you love Kirk Franklin and, of course, Mandisa - hope you enjoy!!
Yes!
I forget exactly which ones I posted, but yes- you may use mine!
I'm not much of a cook but I will definitely buy the Siesta Cookbook because I believe in the CAUSE it goes to!
yes....sorry i cant remember which one i submitted....
This comment has absolutely nothing to do with the Siesta Cookbook . . . I just need someone to listen to me.
I am a homeschooling mother of five children - married to an extremely patient and godly man, but I am going through the hardest struggle I've ever faced. I am seriously considering leaving them all - to do what you ask. I have no idea . . . I just know that I can't live like this anymore. I'm not happy in my marriage (I know . . I know, classic statement) - I know I should be full of love for my children, but I try to think of ways to get away from them. I haven't opened my Bible in atleast three months (I know . . . I know - that's part of the problem). I have no desire for the things of the Lord. I dread going to church, I dread being alone with my husband after the children are in bed - I can't wait for him to get home at the end of the day, so he can help out with the children, though.
Yesterday in church, I couldn't focus on any of the service. I just kept thinking - I hate this! I hate this! When we get home, I'm packing a bag and I'm leaving - I feel like I'm suffocating in my life.
Well, I didn't pack my bags when we got home - I went to the grocery store. But, that impulse - that hole in my heart is still there . . . just waiting to explode.
I don't want to ruin my family - I don't want to let my husband and children down, but I just can't live this life anymore . . .
I had dreams and hopes. Where are all of those? Gone! I was going to go to college and become a commerical artist, have adventures, etc. - now, here I am thirteen years later with my days taken up with five children - who could care less that I used to have artistic talent . . .
AHHHH! Enough whining - I'm sick of myself!
Can't wait to get the cookbook--I didn't submit either--but excited all the same.
Kim

I made the Chicken Enchillada's and the Killer queso this weekend for friends and family and both were a HUGE hit! They said things like "you are the queen and Wow your good"! I passed the praise along but enjoyed the moment a little! (especially that queen part!)
Yes...you are welcome to use mine it was "Chicken Penne Pasta"
Isaac's Mom

Pat or melt 1 stick of butter and pour over cake mix. Cook until golden brown on 350. Serve warm with favorite ice cream.
My favorite saying:
I'm confused like a termite in a yoyo.
Some of us are conditioned to clap enthusiastically when Janice says "here we go," so Janice, I wholeHEARTedly applaud your delicious recipe post. You are so much fun! That's called Sunday Night Supper at my house, often prefaced with the sentence, "If you want something to eat before bedtime, grab a bowl of cereal," as we walk in the door from church -- because at that point, I'm pretty much done for the day. :)
I missed sending a recipe to Melissa the first time around, but will definitely send something to Holly by Aug. 8. Thanks for the extended time to FIND the recipe I have in mind! I love to cook, love cookbooks and am so excited about this one!!!
PS - Beth, God spoke profoundly to me this past weekend -- one WORD after another -- some very concise and complete answers to questions I've been asking Him for a long while. There's no way on earth you could've known... it was ALL HIM! I'm so grateful. Thank you for being such a willing vessel and for sharing your gifts with us. I love you dearly, sister, and I love HIM even more!!!
Praying for you, Anonymous. His heart is so huge and able to hold your grief and His love is so magnificent and fully able to fill that hole. Interceeding for you.
A wise woman once said (or twice or more) that God doesn't only change your life, He changes your day, your mood and your emotions. Praying He does just that today!
Love,
holly
Awesome!
I think I posted a recipe and if so I would be glad for it to be in the book!
Yes! I think it was pineapple caserole-
THIS IS TOO FUNNY NOT TO SHARE...
Hi Cindy,
I am ending the recipes with people's names and blog address and/ or location. Do you have a blog address?
Thanks,
holly
FROM CINDY:
Don't laugh, I have a blog but haven't a clue what the address is. We were on another blog site the other day talking and trying to figure out what my address is..... I sign on to Beth's blogs with CINDY in HPNC.. which is High Point, NC I'm taking computer classes so I can learn things like that. - CINDY
From Holly...
I'm sorry, I am laughing. But I needed to laugh. Is that ok?
From CINDY -
you can laugh girlfriend... .thats what we are on this earth to do.. give each other smiles.. !!!!
THIS ABSOLUTELY MADE MY DAY. THANK YOU HOLLY and I'M GLAD I COULD MAKE YOU LAUGH. YOU CERTAINLY HELPED ME. I HOPE THIS CONVERSATION MAKES OTHERS SMILE.. God Bless, CINDY in HPNC
I just wanted to share this really quick, as I find it kind of funny, and I thought this would be the most appropriate current blog post to put it.
Last night I had a dream with Beth in it. With all the recipe blog posts lately, she was describing another recipe in my dream - something with clams and some sort of tomato sauce, a very odd dish really. I just remember her excitement about it and thinking about how I don't like clams myself. She was also laughing a lot with all the ladies who were there, having a great time. :) I have no idea where the dream came from, but it made me laugh when I woke up.
Yes...I submitted Shepperd's Pie and Coal Miner's Daughter Cake.
