90 Days With The One and Only
After my high school graduation nine years ago (gasp!), I moved out of my parents' home and planted myself in a place called Aggieland. That is, College Station, Texas - home of Texas A&M University and the Fightin' Texas Aggies. Can I get a Whoop? Or at least an Amen? God gave me four life-changing years there. To the praise of His glory, the person who walked across the stage of Reed Arena and got her diploma in May of 2002 was very different from the 18-year-old kid who moved into Krueger Dormitory in August of 1998. Thank You so much, Jesus! I'm so happy that You did not leave me the way I was!
When I think about what God used to transform my life in those four years, undoubtedly the main factor was simply having a quiet time with Him each morning. And not just reading through a quick Scripture and a page of devotional material as I had done for years before, but a time in the morning when I settled the issue of Who was in control that day. When I faced the critical moment of choosing to surrender to the Lordship of Jesus or to the control of my flesh. God did such a work in me through my mom's book Whispers of Hope, which I like to call The Purple Book. It's a devotional journal that was brand-new at the time. I practically have it memorized now. I have gone through lots of devotional books over the years but it remains my favorite.
I had gotten the quiet time routine down over the years and had grown quite proud of my discipline. (Which is laughable because I never finish a Bible study that I don't HAVE TO finish because I'm leading it. Oh, the irony of me being a Bible study writer's daughter!) I remember a friend telling me that she had been struggling with having her quiet time lately and wondering how, this far into her walk with the Lord, she could struggle with something so basic. Awful! I know, my pride is shocking! It was a horrible thing for me to think. But don't you worry, because the Lord took care of my self-righteous heart.
Not long after that, motherhood threw my devotional life into a complete tailspin. I struggled for a long time - longer than I care to admit - with "something so basic." When our resource director mailed me a copy of the new devotional journal, David: 90 Days With a Heart Like His, I was tremendously excited to have a new start. I have had the most success with the format my mom uses in her devotional books and I had real hope that there might be 90 days of victory ahead of me. Well, it took me a little longer than 90 days, but the Lord won the battle for me. I just finished the book and I feel back on track in my devotional life, which means everything is going better. Hard times come and go, hormones rise and fall. But when the foundation of daily surrender and the filling of the Spirit are there, getting through the day is a lot easier and more enjoyable. Now can I get an Amen?
I had a feeling of dread when I realized I was getting down to the last 10 days of David. What on earth would I do next? I needed a devotional journal! Quick! That very day - that VERY DAY - the UPS man made a stop at my house and delivered an unexpected package from LPM. Inside was a copy of Jesus: 90 Days With The One and Only. Someone give Him some glory! I am definitely in need of some time with The One and Only! I had no idea there was going to be another devotional like David, although it does say "Personal Reflection Series" on the cover. That should have given me a clue. But hey, I've never claimed to have a lot of common sense.
So this morning was Day 1. What's really cool is that I'll be finishing up in December. It will be an extra-sweet Christmas season after spending 90 days meditating on the person of Christ each morning. I am so happy about this book that I just had to share it with you. If I didn't know we had a devotional book about Jesus until it arrived at my doorstep, maybe you didn't know either. My desire is never to sell you a product, but I have a feeling a few of you are like me and could use some good ideas for daily devotionals that put you in God's Word. Maybe you've been using a devotional book that has really encouraged you in your own walk with Christ. By all means, share the wealth with your Siestas! Just keep in mind that the mention of a book in our comment section is not an LPM endorsement of a book or author's doctrine.
I'm sure many of you have already seen the Nashville recap video on the Deeper Still blog, but if you haven't you can view it here. Hopefully we will have the commissioning for you in the next few days. Have a great Monday!

Thank you for the encouragement Amanda!!! The part where you mentioned about the daily surrendering ourself, and being filled with the Holy Spirit is so vital, hard to do at times, but vital.
Also, please tell your mom that I am still speaking to her (I just finished Week One of the new revised Tabernacle Study). I think she will understand what I mean :)
This is my second time through the study, and I learned something new... "Jesus died not only for us, but instead of us... I got it (the Abraham/Issac thing got to me) Praise God that He is opening my eyes to see truth!!! I hope that I keep seeing more and more of Him.
I loved all the extra readings from Week 1 :)
Blessings, and I am going to go back and finish my "Whispers of Hope" Devotional :)
Great post! I still struggle with quiet time since I have 3 kids. I never get enough sleep and I am always tired in the morning. I know I can do it! Maybe a journal would help!
Thanks,
Christy
Just wanted to pass along two of my favorite devotional books that God continues to use in my life as I read them again and again. One is "Secrets of the Secret Place" by Bob Sorge and the other is "The Green Letters" by Miles J. Stanford. I can't recommend them highly enough.
Enjoying Jesus!

Amanda, bless you for your honesty and encouragement. It is so helpful to me to know that others out there really struggle with the "Basics" like a quiet time. I always did so well while my son was at home & in school, forcing me to go to bed early & rise early. I so enjoyed those times with the Lord. Now that he is off to college, I find myself staying up later & sleeping as late as possible in the mornings. I hurry through a devotional time at night now. But no more! I've so enjoyed Beth's Bible Studies, I'm going to go out tomorrow and buy the devotionals you mentioned. Say a prayer for my success! Thanks again for the motivation.
Thank you so much for the encouragement. You took all the words right out of my mouth and heart. I, too am a mother of two young toddlers and I need all the help I can get. I will look into those devotional books.
Thanks, Sacha
I have my copy of Jesus: 90 Days with the One and Only sitting on the floor beside me. I'm going to use this as an afternoon/evening devotional to go Deeper Still. I read my Bible and devotional material in the morning before work but feel the need for a bit more. I had intended to wait to begin this study until after vacation in the next couple weeks, but now you've got me wanting to start it now!! :)
While at the Deeper Still event in Nashville I just "had" to do a bit of shopping at Lifeway. I kept being drawn back to a Coffee Cup Bible Study titled "Espresso with Esther." I have started this book. One great thing about it is that they include the scripture so it will be great to take along and use while you "wait" here or there.
Today was just hard to get out of bed if I didn't take my daughter to and pick her up from school. Truthfully, upon reading this I have wanted to go pick up my NLT Daily Devotional Bible and my "One Year at His Feet" devotional (connecting with my HFBC community) and get to Him. Thanks. Plus, I use the "Praying God's Word Day by Day" by Beth.
Thank you Amanda for your transparency. May I use your blog to open up our Bible study with tomorrow morning? We are studying A Mom After God's Own Heart and we all confessed last week our need for a more consistent quiet time.
Blessings to you and yours!!!
Amy
Thank you for the information! The older your kids get, the busier life gets. This is just what I needed to know about.
Deeper Still loks awesome! And Mandissa was there - how fun. :) I hope Deeper Still can come to NC some time. I would loe to see those 3 ladies all together.
Oh sweet precious Amanda, you ARE your mother's daughter ("Can I get an Amen?" "Someone give Him some glory!") You guys are a hoot and a half and I love you so dearly and praise God for you and what an encouragement you are in my life and countless others.
Last year God was just on the cusp of delivering me from a clinical depression that had held me captive off and on for nearly a decade. I picked up my copy of Whispers of Hope one morning, held it up to Him and said, "Lord, this is what I need right now ... I need to hear You whisper HOPE into my heart and mind." Not surprisingly, that's exactly what He faithfully did morning after morning.
My routine in my quiet time is to read the scripture, whatever devotional commentary I'm using and then journal my prayer as dialogue about what He has spoken to me that morning. A couple of weeks into using Whispers of Hope, in response to something in one of the devotionals about God's love for us, the Holy Spirit prompted me that I was to begin my journal entry every morning with the same two sentences: "Good morning, Abba. This is Your beloved child, Beverly."
At first I thought, "how silly" - especially the part of having to say who I was. But, oh my, words cannot tell you how that simple act has revolutionized my relationship with Him. It settles before anything else WHO He is! ABBA!!! God, the Father! That I am His ... I belong to Him ... I am His child. His beloved child! He is mine - my precious, tender, intimate ABBA! And, oh praise His name, He LOVES me! He loves "me"! I have been a Christian for 54 years and I have never before experienced such blessed assurance of His steadfast love. He is too precious for words.
Many years ago I heard the late Adrian Rogers quote an axiom that has always proven true in my life: "These things hath God married, and no man shall part - Dust on the Bible and drought in the heart."
Oh, precious Abba, I pray there will never again be dust on my Bible. I love Your rivers of Living Water bubbling up in my soul!
Love and Blessings,
Beverly Wooley, Tupelo, MS
wow, that sounds great. I really want to do David first and then I can do this one. I bought David awhile back and need to dust off the cover and just commit to doign it. I, like you, hit a stale moment when motherhood struck adn trying to find balance in my life became an all consuming-most often losing-battle. Now that she is a little older, SOME sense of normalcy has returned (i need to highlight the SOME part) Not sure is what was "normal" will ever be again...but it's okay, she's TOTALLY and COMPLETELY worth it.
Thanks for that today Amanda, I needed to hear it. Enjoy your next 90 days.
I about passed out in Lifeway a couple of weeks ago when I realized that they got this on the shelf without me knowing about it. Then I saw "Breaking Free Day By Day" was already out and I was not anticipating it until October...GASP! Get a life Jenny! I study the word for myself but I get in a slump if I don't have some structure as well. I was just thinking this morning about doing this one so I could be on it around Christmas. I have always LOVED Jesus the One and Only!!
Amanda,
I am working through this devo, too. And then I'll tackle David after Christmas.
I also have 29 of the most precious young women at Thompson Station Church in Tennessee who are studying Believing God with me on Sunday nights. I wish you could just listen in when they hold those shields of faith up and say that pledge -- my, my, my -- it doesn't get much better than that. The coolest part about this class, which is different from any other that I have facilitated in 10 years, is that there are only about 5 in the class who have ever taken ANY indepth Bible study -- THEY ARE ALL BLESSED NEWBIES!! It's just precious!! The e-mails I get are filled with excitement for seeing God's Word like never before and they are asking for prayer as they are struggling with finding time to complete homework between nursing, diapers and homework with older children. What they aren't doing is giving up, though, and I'm so proud of them!! Tell your Mom because I know how much she loves newbies!!
I can't wait to go through 90 Days with Jesus with you, friend!!
Blessings,
Dori
Amanda - Wow, now is that God or what??? I was just discouraged today about this very thing. Lord, how can I spend time when I have a 6 y/o and a 17 month old plus work at home. I am ashamed to say that I have been saved all these years and never really had a steady dose of quiet time. Seasons come and seasons of it go but never a steady diet which leads to a weak life. I was praying JUST TODAY though about this very thing and I confessed to me that I know his word is truth and his word is life and I know that is where the source of it all comes from. Thank you from one young mom to another for "spanking my spiritual behind". I am going to try to get caught up on some quiet time once I get these little natives in the bed. Blessings to you!!!!
i was at deeper still and it was so amazing! i am so excited about the Bible studies. as a mom of 2 boys under 4, i know what you mean about letting things go, Amanda. not proud, but it happens. i am personally "scheduling" 30 quiet minutes every morning first thing (as terrible as it sounds) because that way i KNOW i haven't given God the leftovers and i don't overlook Him altogether! these sound like what i need!!
Amen and Whoop! Thank you for sharing these devotional books with us. I am also looking for a way to get back to my morning quiet time, especially with Brad ('98) leaving for Afghanistan. I am going to share this with his new wife and hopefully she will find comfort with it while he is gone. He has ask for a Bible Study that they could do at the same time although they will be across the globe from each other. Any suggestions?
Thanks for your encouragement and reinforcing how important daily time with our Savior is. After all He's done for us, a little time out of our day is a very small sacrifice. I know that when I've done your Mom's studies and worked on them daily, my life was on a more even keel.
Blessings to you all!
Bobbie
Gig'em Siesta! I am doing the 90 David devotional now, it is helping me get quiet time back as a normal and IMPORTANT time of the morning.
God bless you and your family.
Annette
Amanda, thank you so much for sharing with us about the new devotionals! This came at exactly the right time for me. God has really been working in my heart lately about getting back into a serious quiet time (not just a skim through a Scripture, like you said), and these new devotions sound like just what I am after. What a blessing!!!
I just bought 90 Days with a Heart Like His and actually just listened to the CD that comes with it! I am so excited for the coming days with HIM. I am going to try SO HARD to do it in the morning. It's just so hard to GET UP! Lord, give me energy! You ladies can keep me accountable as to doing it in the morning. Anyone have any ideas, like how to make it easier to get up in the mornings?!
Thanks for the encouragement,
Lindsee
Amanda,
I've struggled with my personal quiet time for a little longer than I care to admit. We made a big move recently to a new home and a new place. Our daily routine has changed. My husband is gone more. And I've just not been able to get it together quite yet concerning my devotions. Maybe I need to try one of those books!
WHOOP! Let's hear it for the all the Jesus lovin' Fighting Texas Aggies out there!
Thanks for the devotional tips. I, too, love Whispers of Hope. The PRAISE format has changed my quiet devotional time.
Thanks Amanda and Beth!
Amanda,
How refreshing these posts are - again, a Moore girl encourages us all with her honesty and transparancy. What a treasure your post was today.
Tomorrow is Tuesday! Yahoo-Jah!
This was the 1st study I did of your moms and I will get this devotional book....this study on Jesus the One and Only changed my life....I didn't know how AWESOME He is until then. He is truly amazing isn't He??? Thank you Amanda for the encouragement!
Blessings to you this week!
i have issues finishing studies sometimes myself...i always find a new book before i finish the old one and am too impatient to wait until i'm finished! but i agree...mama b's format works well for me too
..ha--and she thought she'd never write homework ;)
i've got a library of choices that i'm about half way through, but in learning how to become a godly woman, one of my most favorite little devotion books has been "Women of the Bible" (Spangler).
it just goes through each woman (not to exclude the men, cause they're great too!) of the Bible and highlights their strengths and weaknesses, victories and struggles and the beauty of the Lord that is seen through their specific personalities and characteristics.
(also for the other single siestas i'd recommend, "Lady in Waiting" by Jones/Kendall)
You get a big Amen from this sister!! I, to, am coming to the end of the David devotional and have absolutely loved it!!!! and like you I was already dreading the end and worrying about what God would have me do next, when I searched on Amazon I found the 90 days with Jesus devotional!!! Could I be more excited!! The Lord's timing could not be more perfect in this northern girl's life!! Girls, I can't recommend these devotionals highly enough! It draws me into the throne room of grace and an intimate time with the Savior!! Thank you Beth!!! May you be blessed 100 fold for how your teaching blesses us!!!
Kimberly from Northern Michigan
I have been looking for a new devotional book, and I LOVE your idea of finishing up the study about Jesus around Christmas!
I look forward to getting this new devotional book!!
Just wanted to ask LPM to pray for a new Bible study that I am starting this month for highschool girls at pur church. It is called Evidence and I am praying that God will bless it beyond belief!!
Thanks!!
AHHHHHHHH. I haven't even started the 90 days with David yet and now I have to go out and get this one, too! So, I'm wondering...can I really keep up with A Woman's Heart...starting that tonight AND the 90 days with David?
Does Beth Moore ever sleep? I'm beginning to wonder! lol
Thanks so much, Amanda. I had no idea these devotionals are available. What an awesome idea for Christmas gifts or birthday gifts. After I get one of each for myself, of course.
Blessings!
I have "David 90 days With A heart like his" also. I have to confess I haven't started it yet. Thanks for reminding me that my days would go better if I spend that devotional time! I am however keeping up with my Bible study homework (first week of A Woman's Heart). It's so hard when you have young children to get up earlier though when you don't get much sleep! I want to though!
I just love it when God gives us exactly what we need at that very moment in time, whether it is an inspirational boost through reading, or watching his endless glories around us...it is always what I need at that present time.
I've been struggling with my quiet time...I am not much of a morning person and it seems that the morning is always so rushed. For many months now, I've considered beginning my day in study as oppose to my quiet time the last few hours of my day before sleep. From what I have read, Elisabeth Elliot encourages us to start with 10 minutes in the mornings and then undoubtably we will desire longer with our Father. I know my evening Bible studies last from 1-2 hours, because once I get going, I really don't want to stop. What do you suggest? A quick devotional? Reading a chapter or two in the Bible? How'd you become disciplined in your morning routine?
I purchased the David Devotional this past summer, but I haven't started it as of yet. I seem to get my hands into so many devotional or Christian readings that I rarely finish anything! I think I just get so absorbed in what I am reading and thus, excited to see God working and opening my eyes!
Thank you for your time and dedication that you sacrifice in His name, you are an inspiration to us!
Finally, I finished week one of the Woman's Heart Revised study. I read the previous comment and I too, was astounded when I read Jesus died in the place of Issac. It's reassuring to see God opening our eyes to new truths to a familiar story.
I am thankful for all your mom has done for God's glory and the Bible studies she continues to encourage us through.
Hope y'all have a great week.
To which I add a hearty Whoop!! then I'm with you Sister, I understand. And end with and AMEN...after the Tabernacle, I hope to ask for 90 Days for Christmas. Sometimes we just need a little re-start after children. And I think that it is in times like that that Jesus comes in and gives us personal lessons via our children.
Love you! Praying for and counting down to Denver :)
Holly
Man, I struggle with the whole quiet time thing too...why is it that it's so hard for me to have a QT, but when I do I am always so glad that I did? Yikes, that's crazy. Paul was so right with that whole..."I don't do what I wanna do, I do what I don't wanna do...do be do be do (okay, that's my rendition!)...I just praise Jesus that he wrote it, cause it helps me know I am not alone!
thank you for that information
brenda
Wow! I love that it will be ending around Christmas time! I started this too about 10 days ago and never thought about the Christmas ending. But I was thinking 90 days is a give or take for me because it will be done in my time! HA! But so far I am loving it and really God is using the day I am on to really go with what I am doing in life. I love how God does that. Also I LOVE it does not have dates on it or anything so if it takes you a while to get through it is okay. I am sure 90 consecutive days is best but let's just be real. Life takes over sometimes in some seasons! So I love it and reccomend it.
Another great Jesus Bible study that absolutely changed my life is Falling in Love with Jesus by Dee Brestin and Kathy Troccoli.
Much love,
Angela
Thank you Amanda. I have a 19 year old son who has yet to make it to college, though he is looking to go. You encouraged me in what God did for you (even in Aggieland---Hook 'Em!) in college. I have been praying that the Lord would meet him and he would begin to surround himself with Christian friends so he can go deeper in his relationship with God--instead of staying on the surface. God Bless!
Amanda, I totally feel your pain there. I am excited to tell you I have just started the 90 days with Jesus the One and Only and can't wait to dig deeper into it.
Thank you for being so transparent! That transparency is one of my favorite things about your mom...and you! It's so much easier to be transparent, don't you think? I loved the David:90 days with a heart like his! The book on the outside was beautiful also! I'm going to buy the Jesus 90 days tonight at Lifeway because I am also impatient and don't want to wait for my two day shipping time! Is that too transparent for us siesta's? Love you!
Lisa in Kirkland, WA
thank you for the encorauragement! It is nice to know that I'm not the only one who struggles in this department. I'm going to go check Lifeway tomorrow! thanks!
Amanda! (Have to have a little ! because I'm excited.)
I'm working on a new book and just blogged about needing some input from women for my research. And so I asked all about quiet time habits and practices and then I popped over here and it's like you answered the questions I asked. So thank you!
I love what you wrote about how having a disciplined quiet time changed you. The truth is, that getting up early is a small price to pay for the rest, satisfaction, and love we find in spending time with God each day.
Much love,
Joanne
Oh my goodness! I will finish my David: 90 Days With A Heart Like His...tomorrow!!!! I have been dreading finishing it and panicking about what to do next! It is definitely not a coincidence that you wrote this post TODAY!
I hope I can find 90 Days With The One and Only at a bookstore near me! I was so excited about the David one that I bought it for a friend of mine. It was a little out of my comfort zone because I'm not completely sure about her, but I was too excited not to share it!
I will have it in my hands tomorrow!!!!
God amazed me again!!!
In His Love,
Angie xoxo
Awesome! I need this right now! I have been struggling with this lately, and I need something to jumpstart me back into my daily quiet time routine! I am so excited!
Thanks Amanda!

Hi Amanda,
I just loved your post today. I am your age, with a son who is a month younger than Jackson, so I know what you are talking about! I have been needing some more direction in my devotional time, so when I read your post I rushed right out and got the Jesus devotional!
I am an at-home mom (except for 2 weekends a month I work as a registered nurse) and feel a bit isolated now and then from other siestas. This blog has been a great connector! I look forward to spending time in my new devotional. Thanks so much for the recommendation. I love all your mom's stuff! Breaking Free was my first Bible study as a new Christian (during my college years) and her subsequent studies have gotten me addicted to God's Word. I love it!

Thank you for the information! I'm new to Devotionals and this looks like a wonderful path for me.
Whoop and amen from Aggieland!!!!
Thank you so much for your information. I just came back from being on the team for a Walk to Emmaus weekend, and need to find a devotional. I think I just found one. Thanks for all the work you and your family do.
I'll give you an Amen and another Amen!! Last week I walked into Lifeway to get books for our next study and right in the front of the store was Jesus, One and Only Devotional Book. I was surprised and excited to see a new devotion book. I can't wait to get it. I have struggled many times over the years with my quiet time but I can testify devotional books really do help. I can't remember who said this but this changed my outlook on quiet time. Change the attitude of oh, I have to get up and have my quiet time, to,,, OH, I get to spend time with God, intimate time with God, and He wants to spend time with me. May God give all of us the passion and desire in our hearts to have that special time with Him every morning. I use Journey from LifeWay and I have done the purple book(I love that Amanda). God bless you in your new 90 day journey with Jesus, the One and Only!!
Have a blessed week siestas!!
Settling the issue first thing in the morning of Who is in charge has been the ground breaking of a life of freedom for me in the last year! This has to be settled very early before the day begins and then when He reminds me of it all through the day, it makes it so much easier to recognize it and say, "Yes, Lord, to the glory of Your Name."
Thanks!
Thank you Amanda! I was just sitting here trying to talk myself into starting my "90 Days with the one & only"... just the words I needed to get me started! Thank you!!!
This is something I struggle with all the time. My devotional life! I will have to check it out. I have been really blessed by other studies your mom has written. Thanks for letting me know about this!
Thank You Amanda!!! I am in a constant struggle with setting time to do my quiet time....thank you for sharing...I needed that today! Check out the book Lead Like Jesus it has a good message about the reason we need to have time alone with our heavenly Father.
Wow, thanks for being so honest.
I think I look for some booming voice to tell me what to study or what to read, and I never get it. It's kind of silly, but I get sad and quite frankly rather disappointed when I read just to read and get nothing out of it...well "nothing" is a bit stong, but hopefully you catch my drift. When I was in a girls home as a teen, we did devotions every night and discussed the Word, then when I was placed in a home, my foster brother and I would have evening devotions (in fact, once he woke me up in the middle of the night because we forgot to do one that evening). I guess I never thought of devotions as a book thing or an alone thing, but rather a time to share with someone else. It's a bummer sharing by myself. :) But...I guess it's a good thing to think about doing...inviting an author in on my reading time. hmm
On another note, I love the recap's! I am just in awe of all the people who love Jesus.
I'll be one amongst thousands on Friday...woo hoo...I don't think I'll want to leave.
I think the majority of people at some point struggle with consistency in quiet times, and especially moms of little ones! Encouragement to moms though - it does get easier as they get a little older and go to school!
One devotional book that profoundly affected me was "Great Days with Great Lives" by Chuck Swindoll. It was an amazing journey that I will do over and over again.
A good friend gave me the 90 days David devotional and I was loving it until we began A Woman's Heart...I'll pick David back up over the Nov/Dec when we are on Bible study break....
First, you know I'll give you a Whoop!
Second, thanks for letting us know about the devotional book. That deserves an additional Whoop!
Since you went THERE, I must start out with a little GEAUX TIGERS!!! L.S.U.!! Ahem.. now that THAT is done!
I know exactly what you mean. I always feel so 'in tune' when I am doing a study that I forget how it feels to be out of sorts! Losing focus and without a real Study, I feel so off. It also doesn't help that, at times, I read one page 10 times before I can really read it. Two toddlers can be MUCH distraction. :)
Glad you had a little gift in the mail from Daddy God!
Blessings and Geaux Tigers!! :)
I have both of the "90 days with" books. . .I'm thinking of gathering some ladies together, meeting once a week to talk about what we've learned and what God is saying to us. For some busy mommies, a devotional is the closest to "homework" that they can get. Hearing your "review" has piqued my interest in trying this!
Thanks a bunch :)
The Journey Continues~
Amanda, You are such a breath of fresh air. YOU ARE SUCH A JOY TO US SIESTA'S ~ Thank you for sharing! I am watching the sunset over the ocean on the coast in California.
With "HEAVEN BOUND" blessings,
Kim Safina ~ Cayucos
Amanda,
Thank you for the devotional book ideas. I always look for them at Lifeway but I end up standing there feeling overwhelmed & distracted by my 3 yr old who wants to touch every book and thing in the store.
I also have a friend serving in Iraq and these books would be a great idea for her (she had to leave a 2yr old and a 6 month old nursing infant to go serve our country)!!
Thank you again.
Much love,
Kim
This is incredible timing. I just moved into a new house a week ago. I was unboxing my books to put in my bookcase. While doing so, I found a journal that I had written in almost exactly three years ago prior to entering a season of total change. During that time, we had started the Patriarchs study, and I had written in the journal some excerpts of that study that really touched my heart that day. Paraphrased... the Lord doesn't call us "out" without calling us "to". We may not know the destination for a while, but we can rest assured He does. Wow! The Lord used that journal entry as a reminder of His faithfulness, and all of the prayers that He had answered during that season of drastic change. Although the journey to this destination has been quite challenging, He has been with me every single step of the way. To HIM be all glory, honor and praise!
My husband purchased this devotional for me many months ago. I started it and then ended up in another group bible study... then another...
I think I am going to stop putting it off and use it as a separate quiet time from my typical bible study.
Thanks for the reminder!
Blessings,
Karla
Hi, Amanda! I have to admit that I haven't finished my bible studies either. But this time with the Esther study, I have a real hunger for it. I think it's the fact that I'm now a new mom. I just want to love and know the Lord better so I can be a good wife and mother.
Thanks for the info on the devotional. I will start it after I'm done taking my board exams next month.
Oh, and here's your WHOOOOOOOP!!!
(Fightin' Texas Aggie Class of '98)
Although I'd rather say, "Woo Pig Sooie!", my husband sends you a "Whoop!"
Amanda,
I saw the book you mentioned for the first time at Deeper Still in Nashville. I too was so excited because I LOVED the one on David. I really enjoyed the "feel" of the book and the ragged pages. Is that silly??? I will confess that I am a mother of an 11 month old and it took me a lot longer then 90 days as well!:) For women out there who are in a season where they know they can't commit to 30 mins. to an hour a day in his word....I strongly recommend David because it kept me in the word and I could finish the day without being interupted. It was short but PACKED FULL of God's truth.
Wow, Amanda I really needed that today. I feel like I am in a desert. I was asking a friend yesterday how people like your mom seem to have "staying power" with Jesus and me and many of the people I know, seem to waver. I know how much the Lord has done and I know I am alive because of him - why oh why am I struggling? I really feel miserable - I'm praying this daily devotion book will be a step in the right direction. Thanks for sharing.
Oh Amanda...your timing is perfect! I just bought the first book you mentioned (90 Days/David) and am praying it will get me back on the right track with my quiet time. I lead a Bible study, as well, but needed something personal to get me going each day. I am so excited to know that I have another book waiting after this one.
I would HIGHLY recommend the Experiencing God Day-by-Day Devotional by Henry Blackaby. He is a wonderful man of God whom I have the privilege of knowing through a family member. He is the real deal and this book has been a turning point in my husband's walk with the Lord. If you can, I would suggest you get one for yourself and for your man!
Love and Blessings,
faithful chick
Reading your comments, Amanda, brought back a rush of memories of what it was to try and have any time with the Lord during the days of tiny tykes. One thing I finally hit upon that worked wonders for me was to have my Bible and my Strong's Concordance with me on the kitchen counter (since it seemed I spent about 18 out of 24 hours in the kitchen). This allowed me to digest the Word - sometimes one word at a time, life was just that distracting! Now the babies are trotting around the house in their football gear and gymnastics outfits and the Bible and Strong's have migrated over to the living room (yeah! Now I can sit down!). Blessings on you while you do the new study - and thanks for a trip down memory lane...

Amanda, thank-you for letting us know about this devotional and the opportunity to share. I would like to offer two different books for consideration for the siestas. When my youngest was born 9 years ago, a friend gave me "Watchmen on the Walls; Praying Character into your Child". It has five days of scripture and prayer on a different Godly character. It is short and such a wonderful way to pray for our children. There are practical applications at the end of each 5 days. The other book I use is one of your mom's books. "Voices of the Faithful" is a wonderful daily devotional that causes me to pray in a specific way for men and women all over the world in full-time missions work. Some of the entries are touching and sweet. Some, leave me in tears, wordless... Other aspects of my devotional time change. These two books, for me, are "keepers".
Someone whose writings on journaling and prayer, that I greatly admire is Becky Tirabassi.
I have to admit, I am a long way from her challenge to pray for one hour every day, but her work is so encouraging. I think the journaling is the key, because how many times do we say, "Wow, God really spoke to me today" and then forget to write it all down? I sure do......
I love love love Kristin Armstrong's daily devotional "Happily Ever After Walking with Peace and Courage Through a Year of Divorce" It's actually great for anybody.
I did see 90 Days with the One and Only at Borders the other day. I will have to look at them all now!
Thanks for the suggestion. Having some focus during my quiet time really helps.
One of the old standards I've used over and over again. . in fact I keep going back to it is, "The Utmost for His Highest" by Oswald Chambers. You can't go wrong with this one.
I have the David devotional, although I have to admit it's in a stack of devotional stuff! Think I'll bump it up after reading your post.

Great post Amanda!! I do not think I would survive a week with out my morning devotion time. I use your mothers studies or Oswald Chambers most mornings. Even when the study load from school is overwhelming I know He is first in my day. Being the control freak that I am, I need to get up really early to fight the fear battle, and turn the day over to Him.
Thanks for the post!!
I was just in Lifeway this past weekend in search for a much needed devotional book. I was torn between Whisper of Hope, David devotional or 90 Days with the One and Only. I decided to go with Whisper of Hope. I started Whisper of Hope this week and I am loving it! But most importantly, spending time with the One and Only in His Word! I am looking forward to reading all of these! Thanks!
Beth often encourages us that bible study is important but it's different than your quiet time, I appreciate her encouragement, and it changes as we go through differnt phases of life.
I remember when my children were small sometimes I just needed to leave my bible open on the kitchen counter to grasp some scripture when I could....not a real quiet time then and sometimes I would complain to my mother that my devotinal times were on the level of a two year old. At that time reading and watching "Psalty the singing song book" with the kids because they awoke *early* but oh the lessons we all learned, sometimes it takes childrens media and the mouths of babes for the Lord to teach us profound lessons. But now they are grown and the nest is empty.....I love my quiet time. It's been encouraged by Beth Moore Studies, and my Moms In Touch Internation Leaders Guide......but my all time favorite devotional is "Every Day With Jesus" by Selwyn Hughes. If I had to give up all my books and bible studies and keep just one it would be my subscription to EDWJ www.everydaywithjesus.com or www.cwr.org.uk for more info. and of course I love the classics like "Streams in the Desert" and "My Utmost for His Highest"
After reading your post I feel the need to dust off my unfinished "Whispers of Hope" and finish it, I was tempted to buy a new one and start over when I saw them at the "Rowdy In Rhode Island" event......Thank you for your encouragement Amanda. And God Bless you during this precious and hard stage of motherhood, you are doing a wonderful job!!

(one who sent you Katys blog a year ago :-) )
I can identify with struggling with quiet time. Even when I get up at -gasp- 5 am to have some time in the Word, somehow little feet come pattering to join me! I just thank the Lord for those little feet and the person attached to them. But I need my time with Him.
I'm so excited about the new devotional series! What a blessing it will be. I am also excited to read the posts of our Siestas to get even more recommendations.
Thanks, Amanda, for your encouragement and your sense of humor about life. It's always refreshing.
Having never even stepped foot in your great state of Texas, I'm not sure I'm qualified to give a Whoop, but girl, you've got some Amens coming from me!
I have a feeling your honesty and encouragement just blessed every woman who reads this. I have had incredible seasons of quiet time and seasons where I struggle for ages to get back to my routine. And I think satan would love for me to believe I am a complete and utter failure as a follower of Christ, as a pastor's wife, etc., when I don't get it in because my kids have turned my life and mornings upside down and inside out.
Praising God with you for your victory! And heading off to check out the devotional! Thanks, Amanda!
I have been reading this blog for weeks now and am always so encouraged by it but I never leave a comment. Today is different because God used you to answer a specific prayer. As I read through all the different comments, it is so obvious that we are all made from the same "stuff" and we struggle with the same things. Thanks for being open and willing to have God use your struggles for His glory!
Amanda - thank you for sharing!!! I have been struggling with my devotionals lately and my God time - He seems to get what I can stuff in, instead of giving Him the best!!! I have a 3 1/2 yr old and a 13 day old, so it is tuff.... but ya know what, the cross was - i am sure - tougher!!! So, I KNOW I need to recomit!! I will pray for you if you will pray for me!!
BTW - I have been asking for the David book for Christams, Birthday, Valentines etc.... maybe I should just go get it myself and tell my man that I got MYSELF a gift for HIS birthday!!!
Thnaks again - if the daughter of a study writer can struggle too, than I am not alone!!!
Love ya!
Becky Jo - MI
Recently, I started the Jesus devotional as well. I have spent so much time in other areas of God's word I think I forgot about spending time with Jesus. Beth mentioned in the first day of the Tabernacle series that God is pursuing us. Well if I am to be a part of the Bride of Christ, then I am counting this as a courtship with Jesus. I am excited to hear from you how this time with Jesus impacts you.
Hey Amanda,
I'm a huge OU Sooners fan - one of the rivals of the Aggies :(. I just saw that OU & A&M will be playing at OU on Nov. 3. If you would like to come to OU for the game I bet I could get you a ticket???
BOOMER SOONER!!!
Seriously, I appreciate your honesty about Bible study and your quiet time. I just figured being the daughter of Beth Moore that you had all of her devotion books as soon as they were off the press. Thanks for reminding all of us that we're all human and we all get busy & that we don't always take time to spend the time with God we should. I remember well the days with two little ones and being so tired and trying to do so many things and trying to do them all well.
I'm at a wonderful time in my life where the kids are grown and gone, my husband leaves for work at 6:00 a.m. and I don't have to be at work until 9:30. I LOVE my alone time in the morning with God. I can turn up praise music loud and just have a great time with the Lord.
I also wanted to mention that I have The Inspiration Study Bible by Max Lucado and it has little devotions on each page beside the text. (not just Max, but other great authors)
Thanks again for letting us know about the devotion books and thanks for this blog. It is neat to be connected with other Chrisitan women. Have a great week!
Love,
Valerie
thanks amanda! i just became a new mommy 3 weeks ago, and i have struggled ever since to find time for quiet time...it's hard when you can't keep your eyes open. :) these devotionals are just what i need to get back on track.
I just wonder if your Mama sleeps? (Actually I wonder if she & Max Lucado sleep because they both always have something new and exciting coming out!!!!)
Thank you so much AJ for sharing about the devotional book. I struggle with something so basic too. It's almost like I make things too legalistic (can I get an Amen?) that I just wind up not doing it at all.
I also appreciate your sharing your struggles. It's always very refreshing to know I'm not the only one struggling with something.
In Christ's love,
Cathy
One of my favorite devotional books is 31 days of Praise by Ruth Myers.
Oh oh oh and I almost forgot - isn't today (Tuesday) pray for your leader day???
and i was just thinking that i want a new morning devotional this week!! amen:)
I am in the middle of 90 days w/David--I love it! It will take me longer than 90 days as i missed a few days. I to rarely finish anything but I am getting better. My family is going to the states for Christmas and Jesus: 90 Days with the One and Only is top on my wish list. The airline tickets are suppose to be our "gifts" but I think I'll buy myself a gift--a little selfish I know :)!
Thanks for the encouragement!
Amanda,
Thanks for such a sweet post. I have used the purple book over and over. It was how I finally learned to journal.
In fact, I gave a copy to my daughter(now eighteen) and she loved it.
I am currently using Streams in the Desert. God is using it to teach me to embrace the daily circumstances of life.
Blessings to you,
Sherri
Amanda, thank you for inspiring me to get into a quiet time with God. After 27 years as a Christian I still struggle with finding and
STICKING to a regular quiet time with the Lord. I've had your mom's "Believing God" devotional journal sitting on my shelf for so long. I woke up at 3 AM today, couldn't get back to sleep, so I got the book off the shelf, got quiet with God. I long to make it stick this time and grateful that I had the book. If I'd had to go buy it, it wouldn't happen. So glad to be part of this encouraging message board.
As a former athlete I have always relished working out and giving my body a good sweat. It wasn't until I started doing your mom's studies that I learned what a good spiritual workout/sweat was !!! How blessed am I when both happen on the same day. Not to mention when you teach junior high school, starting the day with the Lord is a must!!! find time with the Lord everyone, you will always be blessed. Thanks Amanda for sharing your thoughts.
Thanks for the post Amanda. What an encouraging word. I think this one speaks to the heartbeat of our daily lives and you just gave me a little CPR. One thing about the devotional books by your mom and lifeway is that they are sooo beautiful. Everything about them is beautiful the uneven page edges (i don't know what that is called), fonts, colors, etc. the whole thing. Beth's ability to communicate God's word is unparalleled.
Thanks for your encouraging word they really mean alot.
Just wanted to pass along a LifeWay study that I'm currently finishing ... It's called No Other Gods and is the first in the new Living Room Series by Kelly Minter. I've done many different in-depth studies, and I often come back to Beth's because I feel like there is so much meat and so much of the Word in each day's lesson. This study reminds me a lot of Beth's style of teaching - very conversational and very Scriptural. It's challenging me daily to set aside my idols (and I'm discovering there are more of them than I ever thought!) and put all my hope in Christ. The daily homework is not overwhelming but is definitely substantive. I highly recommend it, but a word of caution ... you will not emerge from this study unscathed by your Refiner's fire. There's a lot of stuff that's getting sifted out of my life right now, but I wouldn't trade it for anything because it's driving me straight into my Savior's arms. There is none like Him!
Rachel
Oh thank you - I have about 5 days left of 90 Days With A Heart Like His. I'm going to go treat myself this weekend - thanks for sharing that Amanda - I loved the study so I am sure I'll love the devotional.
I love the other devotional suggestions too - I'm going to write them all down so I have them handing - thanks again
Dear Amanda,
I loved reading your post. It helped me know you better.
One devotional book I've enjoyed is by Henry Blakaby entitled, Experiencing God Day-by-Day.
One thing I know for sure Mr. Blakaby is a man of the Word and a man of prayer. God has given him great wisdom.
Thank you reminding us to see the recap of the Deeper Still event that took place in Nashville. The video was so good and the summary of each's speaker's message was great.
Hugs to you, dear one,
Mary
Jesus The One and Only is by far my favorite Bible Study your mom has written and I've done them all -- some more than once! Perhaps one reason it is so dear to me is because I was doing it when we got the news that my then-7-month-old son had cystic fibrosis. I had to finish it on my own (I just didn't have the time to do the weekly group thing with all the medical stuff going on), but that only made the experience more intimate between me and the One and Only. He kindly and gently carried me through that time using your mom's study to guide me. I am buying the devotional today!
By the way, my son is 7 years old now and doing fabulously. A little dynamo. Playing soccer and baseball and wearing us all out. God is good all the time.
Thanks for the honesty! I often say I collect devotionals. I have so many and so many never finished. I am currently in the new A Woman's Heart study and doing a devo on prayer. Sometimes I think I overwhelm myself and if something has to go it will not be the Bible study, after all people will see my unfinished workbook. I am just a brat, but even though I am not where I need to be I am so much better than I use to be! Glory to God HE is at work! Thanks for all you do!
Amanda - there's a difference between being vulnerable and authentic---you are one authentic young woman.
Wanted to give your staff my thanks for the Esther Tuesday evening bible study. It was the aroma of our Christ...II Cor. 2:14...Beth's hunger for God draws me to be so hungry for Him...Beth's passion to enter depths of souls sitting in the seats and pour Christ into them not cause of her competency but cause of our Christ---God so showed up last Tuesday and will again tonight...I left a longer version on my blog of what lingers in my heart from last Tuesday and how my beautiful God spoke to me through this week's study...the anxious expectation, being lifted into a Larger Story, and the confidence we can have when Beth spoke of her dark night of the soul. It was such a powerful opening and so looking forward to the journey through Esther. Brennan Manning said: "If it is true that God is speaking, then nothing would matter more than listening." Tell your staff, this Bible study group over here is listening...God is showing up...and we smell the fear but we smell the stronger aroma of our Christ. And we can't thank you enough for bringing God to us, once again, through His word. Bev PS - Whoop! I briefly met Jen last week as she brought God to my Aggie daughter when they were at A&M and to be in Jen's humble presence...I see why my daughter was so touched by God in Jen
I don't have a devotional book to recommend but I have been reading the book Captivating by John and Stasi Eldredge and it has been such a blessing. I am changed by the truths revealed in this book. I have prayed and prayed for God to help me believe and know He loves me and I have never quite gotten it until now. He is so faithful and I am finally believing all the things I've learned in the past few years from the Bible, Sunday School lessons, Beth Moore studies, sermons and various books apply to me - not just everyone else.
Thanks for sharing your heart, Amanda and other siestas. It is so good to know I'm not the only one who has fallen off the wagon since having children!

Amanda, The Purple Book solved a lifetime of quiet time struggle for me too. I have done it 3 times and have testified to the change God has brought to my life through it on many occasions. After child no.3 and before no.4 I had the devotion time down...early in the a.m. and everything...Well, now I'm on baby no.5 and am committed again to getting back on track. Thanks for the encouragement and the ideas of new devotionals to help with my struggle. God Bless you!
Hi Amanda,
Are these devotional series books very much like their coinciding Bible studies? I've done both "A Heart Like His" and "Jesus, the One and Only Bible studies.
Could you please elaborate a little bit more, upon what these devotional books are like?
In Christ's mighty Love,

I used Beth's Living Free this summer and enjoyed it so much that I am going to have a small group of ladies meeting with me in our home this fall to go through it again; I have done Breaking Free, and am hoping this will encourage others to delve further.
Another thing that I have only done once (and I have not completely finished) is to read through the Bible looking for a specific topic or word- after reading some of Piper's works, I chose joy and then recorded each reference, looked up the meaning of the original language, and wrote my thoughts down. Fascinating and wonderful.
Lastly, as a wife left behind with a baby and preschooler during military deployments, I discovered that God didn't mind if my quiet time didn't always occur in the morning, but whenever I could get quiet with Him (I prefer mornings, but for this season, it was not to be).
T.G.
Amanda, thank you for this post. I am one of the editors at B&H who is working on these books and I literally have tears in my eyes as I read the comments of the people who share our common struggle for a meaningful personal time of devotions.
For those of you who are just discovering David and Jesus in the new 90 Day format and Praying God's Word Day by Day and Breaking Free Day by Day in the new yearly devotional format there is more good news. We are working on third installments in both series, JOHN: 90 Days with the Beloved Disciple and Believing God Day by Day, both due out around this time next year in Fall 2008.
Also, some of you mentioned Voices of the Faithful and I wanted to let you know about a powerful new prayer journal called Prayers for the Faithful by Beth's friend Mary Ann Bridgwater, also coming out next year in Summer 2008.
Lastly, this Spring 2008, look for two new books called A Quick Word with Beth Moore. They are collections of Scriptures and quotes from Beth's books. One will have quotes from Believing God and one will have quotes from Breaking Free.
It is our sincere prayer that these resources will continue to encourage and bless all of you in your devotional life with Jesus.
Amen!
I have been trying to up my quiet time, I unfortunately get up after at least half of my kids........So, my quiet time tends to turn toward "anger" time. But Jesus will take that away! I thank you for the book recommendation, sometimes just reading isnt' enough, you need "inspiration".
You are your mother's daughter, God bless you both!
I think it is just awesome that you have been willing to be taught and led by your mother's studies and devotionals. And it's also amazing to me how much you sound like your mother in your writing. I think there is something wonderful and dear about that. Your godly heritage is showing, Amanda, and it looks great on you! Yesterday I bought the Praying God's Word Day by Day Devotional. And I had absolutely forgotten about Whispers of Hope. It's on my bookshelf waiting until I finished Daniel, and I completely forgot about it. Sometimes I get so excited I forget what I have on hold for myself. LOL
I too had a wonderful season, Amanda, with 90 Days with David. I actually bought three more copies and shared it with dear friends. I kept calling Lifeway...if this is series, when is the next one coming out! haha!
Then I saw the next one and bought three more copies again. I am giving them to the same friends in October. shhhhh! A surprize! They are awesome devotionals. God so used the David one in my life during a very emotional time in my life. (heartbreak). and each day I was floored when I would read and He spoke EXACTLY into my situation. How awesome is our God??!!!
Thank you for sharing. (I too, took for than 90 days :))
Amanda,
Thank you so much for your honesty and transparency. As you and your mother humble yourselves before God and us, you always encourage me when it comes to my own inadequacies as a Christian. It is comforting to know that I am not the only mother of young children who struggles with something so "simple" as a daily quiet time! Praise the Lord for "do-overs." May we all seek to make Him the priority in our lives.
I'm glad to hear that I am not the only one who does not finish bible studies.
I am two days away from finishing Breaking Free, which I started in May and have not picked it up to finish it in about two weeks.
Now, here I am starting a new bible study - Esther.
Amazingly enough, I just finished the first week at about 10pm last night. It was my goal since I have bible study, tonight.
Still, I have yet to finish His Dwelling Place, too.
But I take strength in that I am not the only one who takes a while to finish a bible study.
It was actually a word of encouragement for me!!
I definitely struggle with my quiet time. As in "what quiet time?". I got the 90 Days to a Heart like His for Mother's Day and I am ashamed to admit I'm on day 2. I saw the 90 Days with One and Only a couple of weeks ago and wanted it so, but since I haven't hardly started the other, didn't get it. Jesus the One and Only made the biggest impact of the Beth Moore studies I've done so far and I know I would love the devotional. I did do the Heart Like His devotional when it first came out some years ago. In some ways, I'm further along in my walk, but there are obviously areas in dire need of improvement. Thank you for mentioning this today and please pray for me as I try to discipline myself. Isn't it crazy that we have to make ourselves do something that is so rewarding in the end?
Oh! And I forgot to mention the last devotional I did do was Voices of the Faithful that Beth put out. I did it last year and now I realize it's October! Oh my! I've been working on my morning ritual of taking my son to school and coming home and working out. I can see I need some adjustment in there. Wow! This has been a wakeup call! Thanks a bunch!
Hi Amanda, it's me again. I see a few of the siesta's are beating themselves up a bit about not being regular in their devotionals and not getting up early enough to have one. I thinkin' God thinks that any time of day you meet with Him is OK. I tried for years to have my Quiet Time in the morning. I found myself sleepy, unable to concentrate and "keep on task". For me, I slice out time after my youngest is in bed, for me and Jesus. This is my routine now and I look forward to this special time. I would hate for a siesta to think that if she doesn't do her devotional in the morning, well she might as well not do it. AND, thanks so much to pmikos, one of the editors at B&H for the valuable information. I'm transferring all those dates/books to a calendar!! Happy Pray for your Bible Study Leader Day!
I saw both the David and Jesus devotionals the last time I was at Lifeway. Now I really want to get one (or both of them, budget allowing). Right now I am doing I Saw the Lord, 40 days to Personal Revival with Anne Graham Lotz. It has been really good.
And I have remembered to pray for Beth tonight, pray for your leader Tuesday. Tonight is our first night of study, so I desire all of your prayers as well.

Amanda, I am in my 4th week of a regular quiet time at 6:00 AM before my little ones are up for the day. I couldn't wait to have this time with the Lord and oh, how rewarding it has been for me and for me as a mother/wife to my family. And, guess what? I started my quiet time with 90 Days with Jesus. I'm on Day 29 and love, love, love it. I was able to share some of it this morning to a Moms prayer group at my daughter's school. This books is perfect for devotion time.
I wish I had the joy and the assurance that you all have on this blog site. I have tried and given my all to be what God wants me to be. I have served in full time ministry and given up so many things in my life. This past week I had to deal with the suicide of a close friend. That shook me to my core. On top of that, my very best friend in the entire world told me to never contact her again. I don't get this love of God and how He never leaves me or forsakes me. I sure do feel left on my own right now. I have begged and pleaded with God to heal my heart these last two years and I am not feeling any relief. I want to believe in God but am struggling with that. I once felt His hand on my life, now all I feel is an emptiness. I beg Him to love me and wrap His arms around me. All I feel is rejection. Why should I continue to try and spend time with a God who is not there? I am hopeless today. I just want some relief. He used to care about me and love me. What did I do to make Him stop?
Amanda
Amen and Amen.
Thank you so much for bringing up this issue. It is one that I struggle with and have been trying to be consistent with but alas….I do have the 90 with David that I started months ago and still not over day 10 yet. Thanks for your encouragement because I intend to pick it up tomorrow morning and with God’s grace complete it.
God bless!!!!
also, our staff this summer did a book called "Called and Accountable" (Blackaby) that I really liked...it gave real life examples of how people's lives had been changed by surrendering to the Lord's plan for their lives, not their own...and had memory verses, places to journal, and lots of scripture to meditate on! :)
Thanks Amanda for the info. I love Whispers of Hope. My husband bought it for me years ago before I even knew who Beth Moore was. I still pray using the P.R.A.I.S.E.
acronym.
I can't wait to try the two new devotionals!
Praying for Bible study tonight!
Love ya

To Mercifully Redeemed: I am not a morning person either, and in fact, don't get to bed before 1:30 or 2:00 AM, as that is my quiet time with the Lord. Many years ago I was lamenting to the Lord that I wished I could get up really early and spend my first hour of the day with Him, as so many people do (like 5:00 AM or so).
And the Lord so lovingly and gently said to me, "My precious child, you do spend your first hour of the new day with me....it just happens to be before you go to sleep, from 12:00 midnight to 2:00 AM. It is a special time, those first hours of the day, when the world is just awakening and you are quieting your mind and preparing for the day with Me." And I knew I was freed from the guilt I had knotted around my neck about the 5:00 AM business. I hope you know how very precious your late night time is with the Lord, for it is really your early morning time. Live in that freedom and rejoice in your time with the Lord! God bless!
Thanks so much for your transparency & encouragement, Amanda! Like you, I did Whispers of Hope in college, with the hope that I could finally have a consistent morning-time with God. I began it at the end of last year (my senior year). Though I put it on hold temporarily over the summer, I picked it back up at the beginning of this year when I began grad school. And, I am happy to say that for the first time I have been consistent in my morning quiet time.
This morning I did day 67 of Whispers of Hope. Needless to say, I've been wondering what I should do next for my devotional time. The other day I saw the Personal Reflection Series in Lifeway, and I've been considering it ever since. So, your post was nothing less than confirmation from God! Isn't he faithful?! Thanks and Love!
Missy
P.S. I tried to post this earlier, but I had trouble. If you're seeing it twice just disregard this one.
Whoop and Amen to the change that occurs in lives at A&M. (Except I walked across G. Rollie!)
And, unfortunately another Amen to how much devotional life with the Lord suffers with the birth and care of babies. They are His precious gifts, yet somehow tailspin most adequately describes the effect they have on any available quiet time.
Thanks for sharing about these resources and the Lord's provision for your life.
Blessings,
Corrie
A great devotional: Morning and Evening with Charles Spurgeon by Alstair Breggs. excellent...
"New Every Morning" by LPM and you are in it as well as your mother Miss Amanda! It is terrific!!!!!!

Oh, Jesus the One and Only was my favorite!! When my life feels like it's falling apart, I can always trace it back to not spending my time with the Lord like I should. THanks for the suggestion!!!
I actually didn't know about this, so thank you for the shout-out.
My heart is already about to explode at the thought of it!
Just let me have my Jesus...for real!
Amanda,
You are such a joy. I have been reading the blog for some time now, but I have never posted anything. But I just love Jesus so much, and I love how He loves us in our faithful times and in our not-so-faithful times, and I love the fact that He doesn't let me get by with the not-so-faithful for long!!
My 15 year old son and I pray every morning and evening and lately the prayer that has been on my heart has been one of thankfulness that He doesn't let us get by with "stuff". He's awesome!! Lots of love, Petrii
This is my life! I am soon to finish the David devotional. The Lord has without out a doubt come near to speaking audibly at times to me through this book. I have felt moments of panic lately at the thought of it ending, for it brings such the perfect, thought provoking time each morning between the Lord and me. Thank you so much for sharing! You quite possibly just made my evening! I can't wait to purchase the new one! So, so great!!!!
Amanda,
Thank you. Your post was right on. As a working mom, I struggle every day to stay in touch with Christ. I have started taking yoga classes a couple of times a week. He and I are communicating quite often that way. Anyway, I have the Believing God journal I am going to continue in when I start the Believing God study in October.
Blessing in Christ,
Mary Ann in MN
I *JUST* got this book a couple weeks ago! Awesome to hear you talk about it. I'm excited to do it before the Christmas season too!
oh sweet Amanda,
God led me here for these words. I am in the desert now....no quiet time and wondering where in the world am I? Thank you sweet siesta...I now have a direction and place to start....to help me make it to the next stepping stone
love and blessings to you all
This post was just perfect timing for me! Thank you, dear one! I might have to give one of those 90-day books a try! :)
Thanks for the heads up on the new book. Sounds like just what I need.
My favorite devotional book of all time is "My Utmost for His Highest" by Oswald Chambers. I've been reading it for 13 years, and it continues to speak to me.
I, too, am one of those who used to think, "How can you struggle with finding time to be alone with God?" Then I had a child. Now I understand. She just turned 4, and it is still a struggle for me at times. I'm grateful to know that I'm not alone!
Amanda,
This post was so awesome. It's so great knowing that you struggle with some of the same issues. Quiet time really has to be creative with little ones around. Wouldn't Satan love to see us all just give up and wait until our kids are grown!? I can't even fathom the thought of what would happen... I know that your post encouraged so many (including me) to stop and renew our focus on the Word. Praise His Name!
Thank you Amanda for the suggestion!! I am actually doing "A Heart Like His" study on my own right now. I also have a little one, almost 22 months, and one due a week from today, so my time is something I am soon to lose track of again if I am not holding myself accountable. I will most definately have to check out both of these devotionals. Just the other day the Lord was convicting me that just doing my study during nap time was not enough, I needed to be spending much more time in prayer, at His feet, every day. So, it is my prayer that these devotionals will get me through this busy season of life with The One and Only still my number one priority. Let it be!
Thanks again!!
Love to you Moore girls!
Kim
PS see you in March in Jacksonville, woo hoo!!
I recommend The Pursuit Of God: A 31 Day Experience by AW Tozer (or anything by Tozer, for that matter). I feel a little guilty using devotionals for my quiet time, though. Should my intimate time with God be mainly with His Word? Shouldn't that be enough? I don't want to rely on someone else to tell me what God is trying to say to me. I want to know God so well, that I know His voice when I read it in His Word. Does anyone else struggle with this?
I actually just discovered this book at Barnes & Noble a couple of weeks ago. Good stuff!
Amanda...you have encouraged me as my daughter leaves Friday for college. She is Christian but lives mostly in and for the world. I know my "mother's prayers" are heard and one of them is of course that she really meets Jesus while she's over there. I have bought so many devotionals and bibles for her and they all just collect dust. She knows how well your mom's style works for me (I tell her, she's so goofy! just you and me Brit!) so I think that maybe if I got her the Whispers of Hope Devotional maybe she'll at least crack it open! However, I can't find one! I saw the journal version on Lifeway's website, but not the original. Are there any to be had?
On a slightly different note, could you all be praying for me as she leaves? It is just about killing me! I have had friends whos kids have left for college and they were all blubbery and such, and truly I thought, "oh brother. They're only going to xyz. What's the big deal?"
ha.
Thank you. Sign me:
Eating thy thoughts and blubbering away....Connie
Amanda,
I went to Bible Study last night and bought the devotional, Jesus the One and Only. I very much related to being off track at one time or another and being inconsistent with my quiet times. I am the mommy of three boys!!! I was encouraged by what you wrote and thought I would do it too and see what the Lord does in the next 90 days.
Thanks
Thanks for this post! I, too, am a life changed by using Whispers of Hope for beginning a solid routine of morning devotions. I am SO excited that there is more material out there to keep me in God's Word!
To all those siestas trying to start a morning devotional routine, don't get defeated when you fall down and miss a day. It is not how many times we fall down that matters, but that we keep getting up after we fall!
Loving Jesus,
Dawn
Amen Amanda! thanks for pouring it out...encouraging us siestas to draw nearer to The One and Only! u r so precious!
funny...working thru your mom's david study right now (taking longer than it should) i needed the boost this morn! many distractions (valid) but yet distractions have come my way! may He melt your heart with His love for you today.
lovin life in Him-lisa
Amanda,
I hope I can put into words how this message spoke to me. I have felt God speaking to me lately about the study "Jesus the One and Only" and was thinking this would be the next study I would do, but when I read your message I instantly knew this was what God was calling me to do. I didn't know this was available and am now so excited to start it! I pray that it helps me to develop an intimate relationship with Him. One in which we have small talk! (I just watched the session 3 video of A Woman's Heart!) Living Proof Ministries has been such a blessing to me. God has used each study I have taken to bring healing into my life. His word is alive and active and meets each of us just where we are! I am constantly amazed! Thank you so much.
I too have a small child. Carson is a very busy 3 year old boy and I read the very best devotion on Proverbs31.org the other day that eased my mind about some parenting issues. It was titled "How to Raise Successful Children". The date of the devotion is September 13th. I don't always have time to read parenting magazines or books about parenting and sometimes feel like I am not doing the best job because of this, but God reassured me through this devotion where my time and energy needs to be spent! Well, I'm off to our local Lifeway Book Store to purchase my copy of "90 Days With The One and Only"!
Thank you so much! This blog has been a huge blessing to me. It is the first time I have posted a message, but I have been reading it for several weeks now.

Having a consistent quiet time is one of my biggest struggles. I was doing fine with my routine until this summer...and then it fell apart, and I haven't bothered to put it back together again. I wonder if it just comes down to a lack of self-discipline. It can be very discouraging. Thank you for this post; I will try again this morning.
My response to Kalonni's post:
Hey girl I do agree anything from A.W. Tozer is great. However, I do struggle with the same thing you mentioned...feeling a little guilty using a devotional for my quiet time.
I know God speaks to me directly through His word. What helped me was to take little steps of faith when I realized God had a "rhema" (a word)for me that day. For me, every time I am able to take a step of faith it seems God helps me see more clearly.
Please forgive me, dear Siesta, I hope not to sound "preachy" I just felt led to share what God showed me.
Mary
:)
Dear Beth,
I am praying for you as you prepare to go to the Women of Faith event in Denver.
May the Lord give you a fresh word for our Siestas there.
:)
Amanda, thanks for sharing your heart with us. You are an amazing girl, I'm sure your parents are so proud of you! I can't wait to get my hands on 90 days with the One and Only. God Bless you, sweet Siesta!
Dear "Lost in Florida",
You are in my thoughts and prayers today. It saddens me to read your words of discouragment, but I urge you to pray about finding a good church and small group of loving Christians to be around.
I love Beth Moore's book "Praying God's Word." If you can get a copy, you'd be blessed.
Don't allow the lies of the devil to get you down. You ARE loved by God and he's never left you. I'm praying someone very special will come your way to encourage you.
Life gets hard at times, but God has something great in store for you!!!!
Love,
Valerie
I think this is just what I need since tomorrow I'm having a baby and will need a LOT of structure for my quiet times, which also went into a tailspin after my first child! Thanks, Amanda!
This is an attempt to contact LOST IN FLORIDA: Please email me lost in florida. I too live in florida and would love to know how close you are to me. Girl, I don't even know you but your post broke my heart. I would love to talk with you and try to encourage you. Email me please!!

To lost in florida,
Hello, sweet friend. I've been where you are and I believe the answer for me was to get on my knees and cry out to God, confessing my sins and then recommitting my life to finding Him and His will for me. I started having a daily Bible reading time, put up verses on my bathroom mirror and kitchen cabinet that reminded me of His love for me. I started praying to Him when I first got up and after my quiet time. I forced myself to meditate on His goodness and love for me and stopped listening to what my negative thoughts were telling me. Once you have your thoughts filled with Him (and this took awhile to do because I had many reasons why I didn't think He was loving toward me or my family) you begin to see things differently. Also asking for Him to change your heart and then just sitting before Him and waiting really opened my heart to Him. Whether I felt like He showed up or not I chose to believe He cared. These desert times are times for us to strengthen and fortify ourselves with God's Word and it stretches and grows our faith as we see God begin to move. He truly does reward those who EARNESTLY seek Him. I'm living proof, if I may copy Beth's phrase. :o)
I have the daily devotional from Your Mom and I got to find it. I love ya'll and thanks for the encourgement.
Have a Blest Day!

Sisters Keep New Orleans in your prayers this weekend We are supposed have a Lady from Houston coming for a Day of Atonement Eight hours or Prayer and Fasting . Trust me the City needs this right now with the rebuilding . I won't be able to attend because I have no baby sitter for my four kids. I will carry them in my Heart though.
The Lord is always up to something and I trust Him to change our hearts in a mighty way. I go to prayer at my church on Monday Nights so this is a major answer for our city.
The devastation in the hardest hit area's are still at a stand still it's like people forgot about us or something. But Jesus and
Our Father hasn't. I really appreciate the prayers and the out pouring after the storm and espcially the state of Texas for taking us all in!
God Bless,
Sue-La
Dear Lost in Florida,
I don't begin to know what to say to help you, but I know you are at a place many of us have had to walk through. Sometimes we need to remind ourselves that God doesn't expect us to give Him anything....not our service, not our giving up things, not a perfect life. We simply can't. That is why he sacrificed Himself for us. I do not mean to sound cliche', but that is just the truth. We are the ones that expect so much from ourselves. He loves you just as much when you doubt, fail, or completely die inside yourself, as He does when you feel like you have done a good job. He doesn't think like we do. His love is unconditional. What has helped me is to get my mind to focus on scripture, so my feelings don't "take over". Write these scriptures on a 3 X 5 card and pull them out and say them out loud everytime you feel hopeless. Pray like crazy, and when you come out of this "season of time", He will flood you with His peace.
1 Peter 5:7, 10
Matthew 11:29
Romans 12:12
Jeremiah 29:11
John 14:27
Romans 8:18
Romans 5: 3-5
We will be praying for you!!
Amanda I know what you mean about having kids and struggling with having a quiet time. I'm not a morning person, so getting up before the kids never worked. For one thing they usually woke up as soon as I did no matter what time it was! We lived in a little apartment so they would hear me anytime I moved, no matter how quiet I was. When they didn't wake up I would open up my bible and start to fall asleep, cause I really don't do mornings. I have to be awake and my blood pumping before I can sit down and have a quiet time. I did not have a quiet time for many years because I had 3 kids in less than 4 years. I promise you you've never seen that many stretch marks in your life! I still have the battle scars!! I also was very proud of my discipline to have a quiet time every day. I was so self righteous it wasn't funny and if there is ever anyone who has no reason to be that proud it's me, and ex-drug addict, recovering alcoholic, etc, etc, etc. You think this emails long now it would never end if I named all of the addictions I've struggled with. Anyway, now that I have written a mini-novel I will go.
To Lost in Florida:
You are such a dear child of God....He loves you more than you can ever imagine always. I understand how lost you must be feeling right now. My favorite prayer to God is, "HELP!" Try it...and try to have your heart mean it. Also, weep before the Lord and tell Him what is hurting you. Then, hard as it may be, listen to what the Holy Spirit leads you to do. If you need to forgive someone, do it as an act of will and obedience to the Lord. He will honor your obedience, so He can forgive your transgressions. Do some good old confession to the Lord of the sins you are guilty of doing. God honors our confessions and repentance.
And whatever has transpired between you and your best friend, send her a card with a note just saying you are sorry, you love her and ask her forgiveness (doesn't matter who is at fault). That's all...don't say anymore. In all of this, read the Psalms of David's cries to the Lord or find some good praise music, and pray and praise the Lord in these trials. He is faithful always, and when I am out of sorts with the Lord and He seems to have forsaken me, I stop and look at what I may have done or not done for this to happen. Usually I have moved away from the Lord, because He doesn't move as He is the same yesterday, today and forever.
I hope this doesn't sound like preaching, as I have walked in your shoes and just want to encourage you to turn to the Lord. He is waiting to give you the comfort you so desperately seek. And I pray that as you turn to the Lord, He will pour His healing love over and through you and fill you with His everlasting peace. Indeed, you are beloved as one of His children. That's His promise...not mine....
Dear Beth,
Just a quick note to say I'm praying for you as you get packed and head to Denver today for the Women of Faith preconference.
Seems a little strange to have a "friend" come to town without inviting you over for dinner! Wouldn't that be fun if there was a table big enough for all of us to sit around and enjoy a meal, lingering over coffee and dessert?
See you tomorrow!
Joanne

Lost in Florida,
Praying for you today after reading your comment this morning.
With love,
Joanne
Dear Lost in Florida,
I'm so sorry for your loss and how horrible things are going for you. I wish I could give you a hug. I wish I could sit down and pray with you and just listen. Please know that though I'm thousands of miles away, I will be praying for you. I hope that those of us on the blog who are praying for you, helps in some little way. You need someone with skin on, to love on you. I'm so sorry you're hurting.

GOD IS SO VERY GOOD!!
Amanda, I did 90days with a heart like his about this time last year and I L O V E D it!!! I too was sad when I got down to those last precious days I had enjoyed it so very much. I have done several devotionals as well and that one just worked so well for me and touched me many days so very deeply.
So lately I have been thinking that I really wanted to do another study by Beth and was thinking about reading Jesus the One and only just on my own and now to find out it is coming out in this Personal Reflection Series format! Siesta, I will be at my local bible book store tonight!!! Praise the Lord and His goodness! I can't wait!
May God richly bless all you sweet siestas blessed time with Him!
Debbie in CA
I still need to get the David devotional along with this new one! I am so excited about these!
Thanks for sharing!
Thanks for that, Amanda! It was very timely. I've been struggling with a daily quiet time myself, and even though I'm not a morning person, I REALLY want to start my day off with quiet time with God. It just so happens that a friend gave me the 90 days book on David for my birthday so I think that's just the book for me to start with!
Thank you girl and God bless!

Thank you sooooo much for your post! I will now be going out and purchasing the David devotional! I am a mom of 2 and in need of getting a devotional back on track with God! Thank you so much!
With my heart in His Hands,
Shauna
amanda, i love your honesty. i had been in bsf for years as a young mom & am so grateful for that time that i fell in love with God's word. i've done/led all your mom's studies, some twice & really should have this "time with Him" down pat. but i've had a few years now where i've just been without direction... trying to live the life but not digging into the source very well.
this past weekend we had a loving well retreat at my church (fbc-arkadelphia) & i bought the LW journal thinking it would be a good place to get back on track. but i also took good notes during the teaching sessions, so i've spent the week just savoring those - just focusing on a section at a time & journaling. this week has been priceless!
one funny thing (well, not really) is that monday morning a student i went to work at OBU & a student walked into my office(before my final cup of coffee!)& she REALLY rubbed me the wrong way. when she walked out the Holy Spirit whopped me upside the head & said "SHE is one of your testy people!!" i was so happy b/c then i knew what to do with her!!
i LOVE it when His word to me in the morning jumps into the middle of my day! :) THAT is what i had with Him in years past & i'm staying on this road back.
thanks for your ministry, amanda. though you are technically a "far" you & your crazy mom are also one of my "joys" to love. :)

Thank you so much for this post. We adopted a sweet baby in February and my quiet times have been haywire ever since. I went and got 90 days w/Jesus and I am on day 2.
This is just what I need, thank you, thank you, thank you!
Hey! Oh how I know the feeling of thinking Bible study is such a "basic"!
I am sorry to say I have wondered how everyone could not spend at least an hour in God's Word every morning at 5:00am! Pride! God has showed me in the last 6 months how it feels to be one who can barely seem to get 15 minutes in. Thankyou Lord for not leaving us as we are! Thankfully I am getting into the swing of things lately. But this time, I make no judgements on anyone! I may have to check out the new devotional, thanks for sharing!
How I love the David devotional too! I started it this summer and am now in the last third of the book. I gave it to a sweet friend who is struggling with her time with God and another friend went and bought it after I shared how it has touched my heart. I can't wait to start the 90 days with Jesus. My times with God have been life changing, deep, and amazing. Thank you for this wonderful tool! M from Wmbg
I facilitated 'Jesus the One and Only' this past Spring intentionally ending the week before Easter. I recognized the potential impact of a concentrated time of study about Jesus, but what I didn't realize is that I was "preparing." As Easter day unfolded I thought "I really feel PREPARED for Easter." It wasn't something I planned to accomplish, but it was a totally unexpected blessing. I can't wait to do the devotional...maybe before Easter next year.
"The Power of a Praying Wife" (O'Martin) isn't exactly a devotional, but I've studied and prayed my way through it a number of times.
God's timing is amazing. I was on the website to figure out my next Bible study. I am new to our area and conflicts have come up that precludes me from joining a group study. I've done the Fruit of the Spirit online and was looking for something new. I read your blog first and was nueged to spend 90 days in the Word with Jesus. Thank you!
Oh my, I just started this devotional as well. As of 10-1-07 I am on day 7. I look forward to drawing closer to Jesus, and him shaping my heart to be more closely in line with his. I pray that I learn to love & live a little more like he did.
We are in the process of moving and 8 weeks ago we moved into a camper until our house was available for us to live in. Since moving to such small quarters I've found it hard to find a time & place to spend time with him. I desperately miss my quiet time place in our old house. I pray this gets me back on track & that I will quickly find a suitable quiet time place when we finally move into our new house.
Amanda, this might be the post I was looking for (that I referenced at your place). I have both of these devotional journals so I'm guessing I'll be using them next! I have 25 days left of Whispers of Hope and I want to keep on going!
