Matthew

*UPDATED*
Thank you to the sweet sisters who let me know that the purple coloration was from an anti-fungal skin treatment called "Gentian Violet."

My mom is on her way to Atlanta for the Women of Faith pre-conference. She asked me to post some before and after pictures of Matthew while she was gone so that you can see God's miracle with your own eyes.

The before pictures are very upsetting, as you can imagine. Actually, I couldn't have imagined how awful they would be. You will see that his skin was purple. I believe it was a result of his malnourishment, but I don't have any explanation beyond that. I cried when I saw these images even though I had already seen the after pictures. Because they are so graphic, I want to be sensitive to you and those around you. Instead of posting them here, I am giving you a link to see them on another page. Here it is:

http://www.lproof.org/LOI-BeforeandAfter.html

And here are the after pictures. Glory and honor and praise be to our God!

Many thanks to Janice Meyer at LOI for her ministry through photography.

Isaiah 58
True Fasting

1 "Shout it aloud, do not hold back.
Raise your voice like a trumpet.
Declare to my people their rebellion
and to the house of Jacob their sins.
2 For day after day they seek me out;
they seem eager to know my ways,
as if they were a nation that does what is right
and has not forsaken the commands of its God.
They ask me for just decisions
and seem eager for God to come near them.

3 'Why have we fasted,' they say,
'and you have not seen it?
Why have we humbled ourselves,
and you have not noticed?'
"Yet on the day of your fasting, you do as you please
and exploit all your workers.

4 Your fasting ends in quarreling and strife,
and in striking each other with wicked fists.
You cannot fast as you do today
and expect your voice to be heard on high.

5 Is this the kind of fast I have chosen,
only a day for a man to humble himself?
Is it only for bowing one's head like a reed
and for lying on sackcloth and ashes?
Is that what you call a fast,
a day acceptable to the LORD ?

6 "Is not this the kind of fasting I have chosen:
to loose the chains of injustice
and untie the cords of the yoke,
to set the oppressed free
and break every yoke?

7 Is it not to share your food with the hungry
and to provide the poor wanderer with shelter—
when you see the naked, to clothe him,
and not to turn away from your own flesh and blood?

8 Then your light will break forth like the dawn,
and your healing will quickly appear;
then your righteousness will go before you,
and the glory of the LORD will be your rear guard.

9 Then you will call, and the LORD will answer;
you will cry for help, and he will say: Here am I.
"If you do away with the yoke of oppression,
with the pointing finger and malicious talk,

10 and if you spend yourselves in behalf of the hungry
and satisfy the needs of the oppressed,
then your light will rise in the darkness,
and your night will become like the noonday.

11 The LORD will guide you always;
he will satisfy your needs in a sun-scorched land
and will strengthen your frame.
You will be like a well-watered garden,
like a spring whose waters never fail.

12 Your people will rebuild the ancient ruins
and will raise up the age-old foundations;
you will be called Repairer of Broken Walls,
Restorer of Streets with Dwellings.

13 "If you keep your feet from breaking the Sabbath
and from doing as you please on my holy day,
if you call the Sabbath a delight
and the LORD's holy day honorable,
and if you honor it by not going your own way
and not doing as you please or speaking idle words,

14 then you will find your joy in the LORD,
and I will cause you to ride on the heights of the land
and to feast on the inheritance of your father Jacob."
The mouth of the LORD has spoken.

Wow!!! When you said you cried when you saw the pictures I should have proceeded with caution but I didn't. When I saw them for myself I got a cold chill and couldn't hold back the tears! I have never seen anything like it! What an amazing story of God's love and healing! I don't know why I am so taken aback by things like that. He is GOD!!! Don't I believe He can do those things? That He can heal? That He can provide? That He is MORE than enough?! O me, of little faith!! Thank you for sharing those!! To GOD be the GLORY!!!

Oh how I love God and His timing!!! :)

I just opened up an e-mail from my Small Group leader giving us some thought provoking questions to look over before Sunday's lesson. The first question was:

DO YOU BELIEVE IN MIRACLES?

As if I needed a reminder, the next thing I opened was this post!

Oh boy -- I CAN'T WAIT to study this one with the backdrop of these pictures of little Matthew, alive and well and kicking around a soccer ball to boot!!!

"You are the God who performs miracles; you display your power among the peoples." (Psalm 77:14)

Blessings,

Matthew's story of God's personal miracle for him is so very tender and awesome. Precious children like him are the reason my husband returned time and again to Kenya to drill water wells as a Board member of another ministry from Texas. His first glimpse of the tiny coffins lined up in rows on his first trip made an impression on him which forever changed his heart and mind. His efforts now are concentrated in Zimbabwe alongside a dear friend.
Thank you for letting God move our hearts again with these pictures.
In His grace,
Paulette from East Texas

i couln't do much more than just sit here and weep and thank God for who He is. Regardless of how these pictures look, I must have been just as malnourished and sickly to the Lord on the inside before He touched me. Thank you for sharing, and I praise God and give Him the glory!!!

I am so insulated from suffering like this in my blessed little world, but I believe that Jesus wants us to be exposed to this kind of thing so that our hearts do not grow callused.

I come back to the States in a week after four months spent in South Africa and Egypt, and the poverty is unimaginable, and right in your face. The child who lives with me in Houston, who is like a son to me, is a refugee from the Congo and, seven years after leaving, still has nightmares every night about what he saw there.

The group I am with now is not a Christian group, it is affiliated with the State Department's program to train Arabic speakers, so my peers are not believers. But in discussions over what the situation is here in Egypt, they have asked repeatedly, "Why aren't Christians doing more? You guys have so much money and so many resources."

We can do more, y'all. We must do more. My little son and the children of this extraordinarily beautiful continent demand that we do, even at cost to ourselves.

Beth, I try so hard to have your heart of hopefulness. The Matthews are, for me, so outnumbered by the graves and the child beggars and prostitutes and the thought of all the ones who, unlike my boy, didn't get out.

I offer two prayers that I learned at St. George's Cathedral, the Anglican church in Cape Town where Desmond Tutu served as archbishop during the apartheid years. One is a prayer they speak at every service:

"Christ, look upon us in this city, keep our sympathy and pity fresh and our faces heavenward lest we grow hard. Amen."

The other is engraved on the wall of the church and is from Tutu, who said:

"Good is stronger than evil
Love is stronger than hate
Light is stronger than darkness
Life is stronger than death.
Victory is ours through Him who loves us."

Thank you Beth for your work and the real way you teach.

Amanda,

This comment doesn't need to be posted on the Blog, it's just more FYI. But as a nurse, it looks to me like the purple that is on Matthew's skin lesions and in his mouth is something called Gentian Violet. You may have heard of it to treat thrush in babies especially if baby is nursing and passes the yeast on to mom's breasts. It has a very distinctive bright purple color and is messy, but effective.

If you look closely you will note that the purple is mainly on the open areas on his skin as well as in his mouth. I wonder if they used it for all those lesions in an effort to prevent or possibly treat infection?

Sadly, because of my work in palliative care, I see people in this sort of condition every time I go to work. Thankfully, precious few of them are children. Praise God for his healing hand on Matthew!

Wow, Awesome God! God is a God who does what He says He will do. I can't wait to see what BIGGNESS the future holds for Matthew as the enemy tried to snuff him out so young. I am also looking forward to seeing our own before and after pictures when we get to heaven. Won't that be a celebration! Isa. 58 has been a point of study and focus for us at church for the past few weeks.....Love it when God says the same thing to me over and over....You all are great!

I see things like this and just shake my head and wonder how anybody could see something like that and say there is no God! I'm always telling people I don't have enough faith to be an atheist! I got to tell you I have an 8 year old who has had a heart for children who are in situations like Matthew's was since he accepted Christ as his savior when he was 4 years old. He would watch shows similar to Life Today and with tears pouring down his face say "Mommy I don't want those kids to die." Now everytime someone from our church is going on a mission trip he says "Mom I want to go. Can I go?" I practically have to sit on him to keep him from stashing himself in someones suitcase when they leave! I told him when he's in junior high he can go with the youth group when they go. I'm probably going to regret that later, but what's a mom to do.

Keith and Beth...
Thank you so much for your willingness to serve the Lord in such a powerful way...you make an awesome team! I pray that the seeds that you both planted in Africa will bring about a mighty harvest that will spread like wildfire throughout that country. And the beautiful miracle that was given to Matthew, will cause others to believe and put their hope in the Lord Jesus Christ.

Amanda... Thank you so much for the sensitivity in which you handled the pictures. They are proof of God's love and His healing power! Also, thank you for Iasiah 58. It was a very timely word from the Lord.He spoke volumes to me in that passage.
Blessings,

Praise the Lord that He is the Lord God Almighty, Who is and was and is to come! NOTHING is impossible for God....especially healing one of His adored children. I wept at the "before" pictures and at the "after" pictures.....look hard at Matthew. You might see the face of Jesus, for Matthew has been healed by The Master Who loves him beyond anything we could ever imagine. (Loves each of us that much, too!) God bless you, Beth, for being the face of Jesus to Matthew, enabling him to believe in God's healing miracles and expecting God to heal him. Always Amazing Grace ....brings me to my knees every time I see the Lord at work.

Love and prayers for all of the Moores in their work for the Lord. God bless!

One of the most touching things to me in the "before pictures" - aside from Matthew's physical appearance - is the look on your dad's face as he considers what's in front of him. I'm sure he could have been anywhere else at that time - fishing, hunting, etc. - but he wasn't. He was right where God called him to be - regardless of the difficulty of the situation. And that speaks to me.

Praise God's gracious healing! Joy!!!

Those before picutres were unspeakable . As our family prepares to adopt a child from Ethiopia we are haunted by the suffering in Africa. One child at a time, on life ministered to. Amen. BUT it seems so insane that life in the US is so..... opulant while children are dying. HOw do I wrap my head around that!? More importantly WHAT does God want me personally to do about it (James 1:22)

How can we not care about/for all of who/what God created? I believe this is the great shame, but the great opportunity for we blessed Americans...I know and believe God can and will use us, if we humble ourselves and let Him lead vs. us trying to make it work on our own.

Thanks Beth and Keith!

Thank you for sharing your special ministry to these precious ones. All praise and glory to God, the healer and deliverer of His people. I shared these difficult images with my 8 year old daughter, and she was touched, deeply in her spirit, seeing the work of God in little Matthew's life. We praised God together for His healing touch on this little one's life. My daughter has had myriad health issues for the past 5 years and God has brought her through so much. She has seen the faithfulness of Jesus as we have prayed with her, seeking God's touch in her pain. After another bout of illness, she said to me, "Mommy, do you know that you are someone's kid?" I smiled and said, "Yes, I am my mommy's kid." She smiled back at me and said, "Yes mommy, but you are also God's kid." It touched me so deeply. These little ones in Africa are all God's kids, just as each of us are. Let us teach our little ones to be a light that will shine for God in the future as we show them God's great work here on earth. To Him who is able to do above and beyond all that we ask for think . . .

Over and over again I thank God for your ministry, Beth. That you go where few of us are willing (or perhaps able) to go, humbles me. This is slightly aside from this posting, but I want to encourage all the Siestas to go to your home page and see about ordering the LPL-Salt Lake City DVD's. I was there, and I just got the DVD's last night and finished watching them. His Measureless Love....is there anyone of us who doesn't need to hear again and again, the love Our Father has for us? Again, what an honor it is to support your ministry in prayer. To God be all the glory!

MIGHTY POWERFUL....MIGHTY POWERFUL INDEED!!!

If ALL we had of scripture was Isaiah 58 it would keep us going and be the "road map" of our lives so-to-speak, if only we were to let it be.

Oh God make me to fast like that.

At times I have wondered why the joy seems to be missing from my life......and I stop and reflect only to find I have not been fulfilling this call of God in my life in that season, vs 14 - "then you will FIND your JOY IN THE LORD"!!

Thanks AJ and by the way, the pictures of Jackson from the previous post are to die for CUTE!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :)

What can we say about our LORD, it is indeed a miracle. See people miracles do happen. What a testimony this is to everyone and how much we all need to sponsor a child if we can or help out in the feeding programs. Matthew is such a neat kid and now he has a future. I love Isaiah 58 especially v11 God gave me this when I was going to give up on life and everyone. PRAISE YOU LORD!!!!!!!

The story about Matthew gives me goosebumps. I guess I understand why you threw Isaiah 58 in. Right in the middle of it, there are such strong admonitions to reach out to the Matthew's of our world. I admit a few years ago I wrote a couple of letters to the editor of our local paper that said in effect: Why is it necessary for all the church's in town to go halfway around the globe to minister to people in other countries? Why couldn't we take the money we're spending to send people all over the globe and use it to help single mothers afford babysitting and gas and rent. My heart was pierced by people in my backyard that I don't have the money to help.

I've never understood Isa. 58. God tells me to fast sometimes, many times. Often, I start and it seems like He's saying 'oh, that's not what I meant at all. Just go ahead and eat if that's the way you're going to go at it.' What kind of fast is the fast that God does want? Do you ever fast?

I wanted to add one more comment on this post...

On Tuesday night, our Bible study group was doing session 4 of Daniel, and the DVD was showing some clips of Beth and Keith with these children. One of the scenes captured was the "before" picture of Matthew. I paused the disc and was THRILLED to be able to update the ladies immediately on that child's condition. We had a little praise-fest right then and there!!
