The Critical Moment
There is a twinkle in time that the Moore girls like to call the critical moment. The critical moment occurs in the seconds between getting your hair exactly how you want it and then sealing it with hairspray. The Moore world stops spinning during the critical moment. Those present must not speak loudly, make requests, or get in the way while the process is happening. Those not present must not, Lord help them, interrupt the moment with a phone call. Melissa and I know that Mom is not Mom during the critical moment. But she will be right back...with great hair.
Since I largely stopped using hairspray (gasp!) a few years ago, I've ceased experiencing the critical moment. However, the Lord saw what was lacking in my life and provided a new critical moment. This takes place each morning during my son's bath time. I start running the water and then take him to the changing table to get him ready for his bath. Here's the critical moment: I rush with my naked (or nekked, if you prefer) baby to the bathtub and try to get him in there before the cool air on his bare skin causes the tinkle effect. But this morning I got the bath water too hot and missed the critical moment. Baby was on my left hip, my right hand was trying to mix the cold water in as fast as possible, and I felt the unfortunate sensation of my waist being sprinkled with tee. So I guess you could call that a tinkle in time.

Since there is no spiritual value in either of my last two posts, I'd like to add this. Our spiritual lives are full of critical moments. The one that sticks out to me the most is when God clearly tells me to do something - repent, stop a certain action, encourage a friend, write my tithe check, or invite someone over for dinner. It seems like if I don't do it RIGHT THEN, I miss out on the grace God was giving me to do it.
What is your critical moment, whether fun or serious?
I SO needed that! Thanks for the "tinkle in time" story...I'm not laughing at your expense, but laughing even so! I have had a bad morning (with the 5th day of spring break) with three of our four kids. Let's just say our spring has sprung this morning! All the ugly has come out...and I'm glad for the laughing reprieve. Thanks sweet Amanda!

I just saw your comment...I think in line with my first comment, my critical moment is taking the first opportunity to "nip it in the bud" when the kids are disrespectful, arguing or just plain mean. There are times to let them work it out on their own, but the "critical moment" is for Mom to discern when to discipline and to do it before the out of control spiral begins.
straightening my hair....there is a fine line between a sleek, not frizzy mane, and starting a forrest fire in your bathroom :)
Amanda, you are a hoot! I, too, have the critical hairspray moment. In fact I have two of them each morning. Since my hair is so fine, I spray it one time right after I dry it. Then wait a few minutes, comb it out and spray it again. Some days I don't make it through two!
I also have those spiritual critical moments. Moments when I either should speak up or keep quiet(which is usually the case). I pray every morning for the wisdom to know the difference. "The good that I would do, I don't ..."
Amanda...I have two words for you...BOY'S ROCK!
My critical moment is the moment my "tween" son wants to talk...when he initiates a conversation I had better be ready to listen or else I miss it. I have learned that the hard way and have now come to the place of discernment for the "drop everything NOW and LISTEN" times. They are priceless and I treasure them!
that's awesome! gosh...in parenting, there are so many critical moments...especially those moments when you KNOW that you've got your child's undivided attention and they're receiving like a sponge your every word and action...a critical discipleship moment. those are the ones I need the most discernment and vision for. they're precious!
As my kids have gotten older - oldest is 8 only for a few more days (boo-hoo, well sort of) - I find there are many critical moments that rear their head at the most inopportune time.
Like when my Sarahjane - the most outspoken of all 4 - sees someone that might be a few pounds overweight. She has exclaimed before, "Mom, do you ever think your bottom will be that big?" Or the time she asked a woman if she knew she had all those wrinkles on her face. Yes, i crawled under the buggy and let the older ones push me to the car... ha ha
Please know that I am trying, but sometimes those critical moments escape before i have the time to reel them back in or shall I say - ESCAPE!!
Critical moments change as we change - for better or for worse...
Have a terrific day and do keep blogging!
I relate to your critical moment in this post, except my son can walk and the critical moment, I found out, is the walking nekked from his room to the bath tub. One should not allow a child to do this unless you want the "unwanted" all over the floor. We now wait to take off the diaper until we're in the bathroom! ;-)
On the serious side, when God brings someone to mind, the critical moment is whether I act upon calling that person right away or wait.

My critical moment: I am just finishing up the "Believing God" study with the women in my church (will comment some time on what the Lord has done!). At that point where I am usually fearfully anticipating that dreadful crash after riding such a high (from the Most High!), but instead up half the night Praising God for how He has showed up and what He has done and what He is going to continue to do through this study. No, it is not the end, but the beginning of an incredible journey for me and the women in my church! Glory to God!
Thank you for making yourselves available as His instruments! I hope I get to visit your mansion(s) in Heaven, because I know God has something awesomely rewarding prepared for y'all up there!
My critical moment always comes when my toddler is driving me crazy because he is doing something that is perfectly normal for his age but I can't stand. Do I let the Holy Spirit take control and deal with him gently and with grace or do I lash out in the flesh and get angry with him and instil some of that momma fear? When dealing with poopy being painted on the potty it can be a challenge to let down those fleshy 'offenses' and get down on my knees to repent and remember that Jesus' ways are supposed to me my ways too. May God continue to give us all extra grace with our 'babes'!
I have a "tinkle time" story to share as well. Years ago when, Bradley, our first born came along Dad was changing his diaper. It was Brad's first week at home and even changing diapers was exciting to us at the time. Bradley was not on a changing table. He was on our bed. Mom (me) was lying behind the baby across the bed. During causual conversation I saw something out of the corner of my eye and the next thing I knew a warm stream of tee landed on my forehead. I don't think an expert marksman could have had a better aim. Apparently Dad was unable to move quickly enough with the clean diaper and the cool air caused a reaction. If it had been anyone one else besides my new baby boy I don't think I could have stood it. Now this is just a funny memory in a long long list of them as we watched our sons grow up.
I am so glad God gives us the opportunity to laugh at ourselves sometimes.
Oh Amanda, the joy of motherhood, you brought precious memories back into my life and also made me think of what my critical moment in life is. . . THANK YOU, we enjoy reading about everyday things, that's what makes you real.
xoxo

I wonder why you feel there is no spiritual value in your original post. There is a great amount of spiritual value in what the post reminds us of like what you posted in your comment and the thoughts it brings to mind in others of missing a critical moment and also in commiting ourselves to recognizing critical moments and responding to them in the future. Also there is great spiritual value in being genuine and "human" with your sisters, helping everyone to feel united in the little things as well as in our Lord. All of that to say I recognize and appreciate the spiritual value of what you said! lol Thanks! ~hugsnprayers~ Cyndi
The critical moments that sticks out to me the most is when it concerns my children (Son 17 Dauthers 14 @ 9) My son has a friend when he is with him he does things he sould not, and knowing I had to stop the friendship.(only the the grace of God can you do this) It is really hard to explain that to children but I new I had to. I do not want my children or myself to miss out on Gods blessings.
These critical moments with little boys can delight or torture a new mommy! My oldest of 4 sons who is 18 years old now peed on me within 30 seconds of exiting the birth canal!!! My obgyn commented that his plumbing was working!! I was delighted, needless to say.
I have actually gotten out of a nice, warm, relaxing shower and pounded out an e-mail to a new friend God has put in my life inviting her to an Angela Thomas event at my church that evening. I had no tickets, etc., but it all worked out and what a load of grace God showered ME with from obeying in that critical moment.
I love your blog and Jackson is a cutie pie!

Amanda,
This is so precious, as I felt a critical moment this morning, before I read your blog. Something on a previous post regarding Melissa's passion for worship lyrics that are solid, lifegiving, (as only those based on Word of God can do,I agree) has been running through my thoughts ever since. If you want to bless your sister with some music with "meat" to fuel her soul, bless her with Keith and Kristyn Getty's new CD, entitled, In Christ Alone. I know the song that the CD is named for has ministered to all of us, but God has blessed this recording of hymns (yes, hymns! because of the syle of music...but there is NOTHING stodgy or stuffy here) with such power, it will bring you to your knees or bring you to your feet! The Power of the Cross and See, What a Morning are especially appropriate for the coming Easter season and Speak,O Lord and There is a Higher Throne, could have been written by your Mom.
So the critical moment of...go check the blog...was this morning. I send this to you with my prayers.
You do not have to post this to the blog site because it was really meant as a way to communicate what I felt was a real nudge from the Lord, to you and your family. By all means, if you do get the CD and love it, feel free to communicate about it on the blog. I do think it would really bless others as well.
DEAREST AMANDA,BETH, & SISTAS,
THERE IS GREAT SPIRITUAL VALUE IN YOUR LAST TWO POSTS! LET ME TELL YOU WHY GIRLFRIEND...BEING IN A SEASON OF STRIP, STRIP, OUCH, OUCH, HELP ME I'M NOT GONNA MAKE IT LORD,CRY,CRY AND HOWL SOME MORE...LAUGHING AT THE LIGHTER THINGS YOU'VE SHARED ARE LIKE ANOINTING OIL!WHEN I HAVE THOUGHT,"I WILL NEVER LAUGH AGAIN," YOU HAVE BEEN THE ANSWER TO THAT PRAYER.WHEN THE BATTLE HEAT HAS JUST FELT SOOO HOT AND MY FOCUS HAS GOTTEN WAY OUT OF BALANCE ON THE "FEAR OF WARFARE" SIDE,GOD HAS USED YOUR MUDBUGS & TINKLING IN TIME TO HELP ME REMEMBER TO BREATHE FOR A MOMENT AND SHIFT THE FOCUS. AS BETH SHARED IN "PRAYING GOD'S WORD," "MUCH ABOUT FIGHTING THE GOOD FIGHT,BUT MORE ABOUT THE PURE PURSUIT OF GOD!" THANK YOU FOR MAKING THIS A CRITICAL MOMENT FOR ME...TO REMEMBER THAT HE IS THE AUTHOR OF LAUGHTER AND JOY.XXXOOO JULIA.
I totally agree with you on the "Critical Moments" in life.
Spiritually speaking if I don't pay attention to God's stirring in my heart about something and do whatever it is right then - I truly miss out. Why is it that I so easily dismiss what God wants to do in my life - even in the littlest of things, like go give my sister in Christ a hug at the moment He intends? How easy would that be? But I just get so "busy!" Shame on me... What a wonderful thought for today; that I would be always ready to live my life for Christ - even in the little things! Critical moments... moments of decision.
On a lighter note - I, too, have the critical moment with my almost 14 month old. Only his is a little more messy shall we say. We get him in the tub, get him washed, and then we try to time the playing just right - for if he stays in the tub too long and relaxes just enough, we have a BIG mess (a.k.a. #2). Yikes, being a mom is more "fun" than I ever imagined. But I just couldn't imagine my life without my little buckaboo!
God's Richest Blessings on Your Family,
Melle
These critical moments of little boys can delight or torture a new mommy! My oldest of four sons, who is now 18yrs. old, peed on me within 30 seconds of exiting the birth canal! My obgyn commented how well his plumbing worked already! Needless to say, I was delighted that time.
I have literally dashed out of a warm, relaxing shower to pound out an e-mail(butt naked) to a new friend God has placed in my life inviting her to an Angela Thomas event at my church that night without even having bought tickets. It all worked out, she went, someone provided tickets, it was great, and God showered grace upon me as well as her. I would have missed it all had I not obeyed in a critical moment.
I love your blog and Jackson is a cutie pie.
I loved your Mom when she came to Knoxville a year ago. I actually penned a poem about her sessions and mailed her a copy. She has been such an inspiration to me through her poetry.

I am LOL right now because I have experienced this same "critical moment" for years!!!! I have three boys, so they just DON'T get it and if they interupt me during my "critical moment" and I don't seem quite like their mom, they say to each other, "stay away mom's twin sister "Angelica" has just showed up!! My other "critical moment" is right after I have curled my eyelashes and the mascara needs to be immediately applied!!!!
On a more spiritual note, I would agree with what you shared in your second blog. God is constantly putting "critical moments" in our path's and we need to walk in that sensitivity to the Holy Spirit's voice and act in obedience. The old testament prophets gave us a great example in that every time they heard the voice of the Father they obeyed "at once or "immediately". That's the kind of example we've been given and that's what I want to repeat, I soooo want God to keep speaking into my heart!!!!!!!!! Love to you girlfriend, you crack me up!!!
amanda-
i have only been married for 2 years and am 25, but your little man makes me think about my own little man.........well someday.
i wrote this in my journal the other day about my own spirtual mother. however, it also makes me think of the impact your biological mother has had on many of us.Life is so busy. We are so busy. We even tell each other just how busy we are. Will it ever slow down? Do I want it to slow down?
This day started just like all the others. I woke up and had my breakfast. I had a cup of coffee. Time for lunch and a diet coke, I know, I know, too much caffeine. Well we have a lot to do. We are busy you know. Dinner comes and we realize it has been a long time since we had a glass of water. When was it? I can’t remember. Suddenly, I realize I am so very thirsty. I go to the water machine and pour a cup. Oh this will be refreshing. Did I mention I am so thirsty? I take a big gulp and spit it out. I am shocked. What is wrong with this water? I run around to several other nearby water machines and pour a cup. They all taste the same. Well, at first it doesn’t, at first it looks good. Cool, sparkling, and crystal clear. Then, I taste it. It is gross just like all the rest. I spit it out. I start to feel panicked. I frantically start thinking about what I will do. I think of plans to get the water, but none of them seems right. I cry. I can’t sleep. I can’t eat. What will I do? What will I do? I come up with every horrific scenario in my head. It will be terrible. I will surely die. I sit down. I cry in public. I cry out. I cry to the Lord, if you are there please help me find a drink. Silence. I guess he didn’t hear me.
A woman walks by. She looks so peaceful and refreshed. She asked if I was thirsty? I look up at her. I cry again. I tell her just how thirsty I am. She says she knows where I can find en endless source of water. Right? Endless water? She must be optimistic. I ask her anyways. Is this your own private well? She says no. She pulls out a small canteen. My eyes light up. She gives me just a sip. I pause a second. It is good. I tell her my story. How I don’t really even know what happened. How on day woke up and was just so thirsty? She says she understands. She gives me another sip. She tells me that one time she was so dehydrated, they said she would die. I asked her if my symptoms look that bad. She says no. She thinks we caught it just in time. She says it is time to get up. We walk together for a while. Just walking besides her makes my feel better.
She says there are a few more people along the way she must help. She says they have less time than I. I understand. She has been so gracious. She starts to walk away. I cry out, where do I go from here? She says follow the signs. How will I get more water? She says not to worry, just to pray. She tells me to turn around. To see how far I’ve come. She’s right, you know. She says keep my eyes ahead. If I look there will be guides along the way. I look at her…do you think I can do it? Do you think I’ll be okay? She smiles in a loving way. She says that she is sure I will walk the right way.
I keep walking towards the well. There are small signs along the way. My ears hear a word behind me, ‘this is the way, walk in it,’ whenever I turn to the right or left. The path has been so thrilling. I tell you the truth. I really don’t know where I am going, but I know the One who leads.
This is so funny!!! A month ago I went to my hairdresser for some more color(roots were awful) and he decided that I needed a new "do" and I said, OK....the style was so cute and I loved it, until the next day. My critcal moments, I washed my hair and was trying to style it the way he did and it was a disaster! I dried and styled my hair for an hour(thought I was going to have a heat stroke) and gave up and washed my hair again and prayed, God, please help me style my hair. It was presentable enough to go out in public.
I know what you mean about the critcal moment of getting your hair just right and rushing to get spray on it. The other day I had my hair just right and everyone I know decided to call me as I was trying to spray! Needless to say, my "perfect" hair was a perfect mess!! God interruppted my hair ministry to minister to two friends who were at critcal moments in their lives and I prayed with them and I can say, God showed up!! Amanda, this was a perfect post and it made me laugh!!! By the way, I fully understand getting your baby to the tub before they tinkle all over you. Having raised two boys, I had many "tinkle" moments! lol.

Miss Amanda - I'd love to commiserate with you about the "tinkle" in time. As the mom of two boys (2 and 3 years old), I have had countless "critical moments" that involve various body functions. Its the joy of boys! They can hardly contain all that energy in that little body. I love it! Maybe someday God will give me a girl so I can experience a whole new world - the world of girl!
Love ya'll!
My critical moment, Amanda, is similar -- it is that moment of time when I can either go left or I can right. I can go left towards all of my old habitual paths that lead me straight to my strongholds or I can stop and go right -- straight into the arms of My Deliverer!
I was thinking about this just yesterday and I recalled a sermon series taught by Andy Stanley. It was called "The Best Question Ever" -- the question to stop and ask yourself at every point of decision (no matter how minor or major on our scale):
"In light of my past experiences, present circumstances and future hopes and dreams, what is the wise thing to do?"
I probably would have written it with a very definitive resolution that it is God and God alone who gives us the wisdom that we need, but I think the point is clear.
I've never forgotten that. I wish I could say I always stop and ask myself this question. Thank God that He gives us "do-overs" -- chances to choose again and do it right the next time.
It also always draws me back to the "Thus far the Lord has lead me" lesson your Mom taught in Believing God! I have so many "Thus Far" issues in my life -- praise God, He still leads!!!
Thanks for the thought-provoking question.
Blessings,
Dori
P.S. I'm a Baptist girl, but with a son in the house I've been sprinkled a time or two myself!! tee hee!
My critical moment is getting from the coffee pot to the Word each morning without being distracted. If I miss either of these first thing my day is headed down the tubes...then I head for the hairspray. What more does a girl need? Coffee, her Sword, and some extra-hold hairspray? I am not convinced that hairspray and lipstick shouldn't be part of the armor of God!!!
That is so funny! I have had the same thing happen to me so many times. My little girl will go on me all of the time before I can get all her clothes off to get her in the tub. Recently, I was helping my sister with her twins, and a two year old and my girl. We were at the mall and I got thrown up on (my sisters breast milk...yuck!) then I went to change her son...not being used to boys he sprayed me all over and to top it off he went (what I like to call #4 if you know what I mean) poopie and there were no more wipes...I did my best! I looked up, as I was changing him in the middle of the mall floor, and I said "Jesus, is this what you meant by washing feet?"
On another note:
My man was watching Morgan the other day and I came down stairs and gave her a big hug. I patted her little bottom and thought it was strange that she was wearing no diaper. I found it in the footie and she had gone all over herself! It was hilarious!

Mine came at 3 a.m. on April 14, 2003. That was THE moment that God shook me awake and told me that there was something or Someone missing in my life, namely Jesus.
The worst part of the whole thing was that it frightened me nearly to death, as I didn't actually understand what it was "all about". Then I ended up having to try to teach "my" 5th graders all day; all while in a "prayer-like fog", as I had no clue what I needed to do. It seemed like years went by before the school day ended, and the busses finally left, and I dashed off to find someone who would understand my desperate need.
It ended up being a special lady from Beth's church, [which is where I had been going to Bible study that Spring semester]. Mind you, I nearly squeezed her sweet little hands to death that afternoon (bless her heart). Then she "dared" to make ME (as frightened as I was at the time) to articulate to Jesus what I wanted and needed of/from Him, which ended in God's great love and my becoming a new creature in Christ Jesus (my salvation day).
It was so special. This incredible peace and joy fell upon me right that very moment.
And amazingly enough, I'm gonna "be" 4 years old in Christ this next month. Praise God!

lol -- I will have to stop and think on the critical moment in my life but I solved your critical moment by prepping the bath water first and then undressing the child right there in the bathroom, stocked with wipes etc for clean up before the tub....
Too funny - I can relate to that critical moment having had 3 boys myslf (all of whom are older that that now).
Spiritually, God recently spoke to me and had me reach out to an estranged friend. Having resisted for awhile, I finally obeyed and was blessed tremendously. I thought God was doing this for me, but in reality it was for the friend who happened to have had a critical moment in her own life. How awesome, and humbling, to be a vessel through which God was able to reach out to one of His hurting children!
First let me say--this happens to me quite freguently -except I have a little girl--I have learned to put her on the floor standing beside the tub before I remove the diaper (on a towel of course)--this works but alot of laundry has to be done! My critical moment in life is when I cant take back something that my mouth just blurts out without any though at all. I am very impatient and this happens alot--God is working on me!
serious critical moment:
temptation is threatening to devour me. to i run full force into my addiction, or cease ALL activity and fall before the throne of grace where i can receive mercy in my time of need?
ps - i am in one of these critical moments right now. eating disorder. threatens me to choose this idol i've crafted. jesus is whispering to me, "if you know me, you will want to choose me." i realize i need to KNOW him, so that my eating disorder and sense of "control" become more and more repulsive, less and less enticing.
oh Jesus, please help me now. come down to me and fill me with strength, because i have NONE.
LOL!!!
SO TRUE about the hair! Amen!
About the baby- oh, the beauty of the motherhood :) Can't wait :)
I can picture God having a critical moment with me every morning when He's waiting for me to get up just to present me with the breakfast of fresh baked mercies with unfailing love on top that He cooked all by Himself. I move- He gasps and sigh when He sees that I moved just to push the snooz again. Then He waits again. He didn't miss anything- I DID, big time!
I guess, I need to learn to bring joy to God's critical moment :)
He is so good!
Again, AMEN to the hair story :)
How can you say there is nothing of spiritual value in it. Sometimes a big smile at something that is both funny and wholesome is the best thing...it is a critical moment when someone is down - the moment that turns a frown upside down...oops - time to stop - I am getting carried away.
Amanda, too funny! There were quite a few critical moments that I missed with two boys. Now, my critical moment is when I have to *go*, I had better get right there! My *serious* critical moment is the same, right then, or as God has been teaching me IMMEDIATELY. In the past, I excuse my hesitation as praying about it, pondering it, asking mature believers for their input or wanting further confirmation.

Ooooh! A great question! So much swirling around in my head right now. Here's one off the top:
On the rare occasion that my hubby has irritated me and I can't--OK, just WON'T--let go of it, I deliberately refocus my thoughts toward ways to serve him like crazy. Going the extra mile to show him I love him, when I might not particularly LIKE him at that moment, melts the crabbies away.
Amanda,
My "Critical Moment" was when God asked me to do something that was so far out of my comfort zone. Without going into detail, I was asked to shut myself off from something/someone that had become my whole life (besides the Lord Himself). I was asked to place myself in a position to where I was totally and completely dependent on Him. I couldn't believe that He was asking me to do this. So, I prayed and fasted over the decision, but the instruction was still extremely clear. There came a point in time where I felt that it was imperative that I do it right then. So, I finally surrendered and did what He asked, and I have been blessed beyond measure for doing so. He used that experience to teach me total dependence on Him. He had me walk away from everything that I had found security in and focus on getting my security from Him alone. He is blessing me in tremendous ways right now I beleive from my it is because of my obedience during that situation. He brought to mind over and over again the verse in Romans about all things working together for the good of those who love Him and are called according to His purpose. While going through the situation, I didn't see what possible good could have come from it. But, like always, He was faithful to show me. Praise be to God! I am so thankful that His thoughts and ways are so much higher than my thoughts and ways!
Critical Moment? It is that time when I am up to my eyeballs with more than my mind can take--getting ready to go over the edge-- and I have a split second to decide if I am going to follow what I know to be true or fall back on what my emotions are telling me to do.Yesterday was one of those days. Everything was set for a perfect excuse to go ahead and just fall. Amazingly, I did not. The critical moment passed and God said, "See--you've come a long way baby."
I feel that my critical moment is right now. The Lord has shown me some areas in my marriage where I need improvement. My flesh is telling me, "It's not worth it, It won't do any good to make those changes."
But my Spirit is encouraging me with "I have always been faithful to you in the past," "Do not fear, for I am with you; Do not anxiously look about you, for I am your God. I will strengthen you, surely I will help you, surely I will uphold you with My righteous right hand." Isaiah 41:10
So, as of right now, I am standing closer to the Lord trusting that this Critical Moment will lead to a restored marriage and a closer relationship with the Lord.

Now, and every "now" that is to come. From one breath to the next, God is with me always, telling me to go here and do this or say this or not. Sometimes, it's a "not" do that, because it isn't the work HE would have me do for Him or it wouldn't be for His purpose. And these are things in everyday life, yet going about doing my Father's business.I sin, everyday I have to ask for forgiveness. And my Father is there, loving His child so much it just blows my mind!!But my sins and needing to ask for forgiveness don't keep me from listening and going about what God wants me to do and it doesn't keep Him from thinking that I am an able servant to be of use to Him for His Glory. IS'T THAT JUST TOO NEAT!!I mean, me, plain ol'me, doing stuff for GOD!you know GOD!!Blessed Be His Name! K in AR
I would agree with you about my spiritual life critical moments - they may seem insignificant at the time, but can definitely be very significant.
On another note...Another critical moment is going from the bath to the table and getting a diaper on in time. That one got me too. Now it's the moment when my son realizes he has to go to the bathroom. Can we get there in time?????
By the way... there is spiritual value in sharing the daily walk of our lives, at least I find it valuable. :) Thanks!

Amanda, you've clearly inherited your mom's sense of humor. ;)
I have experienced similar critical moments, and missed them. Most recently this would involve my new duvet set on my bed. I'd pined for YEARS for this thing, and had finally purchased it and reveled in its luxurious, down lovliness for about 1 month. My 3 year old son was ill, and I wasn't feeling so well myself. We had layed down for a nap in my bed, with a bowl nearby in case of emergency. I woke up to the unmistakeable sound of the belch that precedes a vigourous round of vomiting. I grabbed for my son and the bowl simultaneously, but my reach fell just short. I knew I had to choose between the carpet, or my bed, as I wasn't going to be able to catch the forthcoming mess in the bowl. At the last second, I recalled I could sacrifice myself. And so, I turned my son towards me, and let him vomit all over my front, rather than on my bed. (I have since questioned my sanity, so you don't have to.) We then ran to the bathroom between bursts, and I was then faced with removing my turtleneck sweater whilst attempting not to let the emanation touch my skin, or stick in my hair.
What is spiritual about that story? Well if you can find anything, you are a better woman than I. ;) I suppose that not everything in life will have "spiritual value", and that is okay. Or you could really reach, and attach the Scripture, modified only slightly, "Greater love has no mom than this, that she would lay down her pride for her quilt."
My son still says, "Hey Mom, remember when I puked on you?" Yes, my love. I'll never forget.
Blessings!

Hey Amanda, I enjoy all of your posts - spiritual or just plain fun! I think a critical moment for me is the time just before I open my mouth to speak and the Holy Spirit whispers that perhaps that is something better left unsaid. It is in that moment of choice that I can either listen or go right ahead and say what I invariably regret later.
I'm a grandmother now - but I remember those "tinkel" moments well ( I had two little boys) :-)
Hot dog! Beth and Amanda have a blog! woops, that rhymed... But I can't believe I've been missing out on this! However, my excitement outweighs my remorse. Living Proof is one of my favorite state-side ministries and the Moore women are some of the coolest around. :-)
My serious "critical moment" is very similar to Amanda's. I often find myself about to avoid doing what God wants me to do in a certain situation. These situations can range from boldly telling what Jesus has done in my life, bringing in a Biblical perspective to my secular college classes, or just offering an encouraging word to someone. I have to act quickly, or else the oppurtunity will pass. It's easy to just be lazy, but often times the Holy Spirit overcomes my laziness and I've just got to do whatever it is that God is asking of me. I'm so thankful that my Heavenly Father teaches me obedience! What a great God we serve.
*Gasping with laughter*
My critical moment? When I read a hysterical post and realize a second too late that I had three mugs of coffee this morning and I should have acquainted with the little girls' room a tad sooner.
In every situation we face, there is a critical moment of choice—one where we can choose to love, or one where we disobey Christ’s command. Some are easier than others. Some are downright impossible but for His Grace and dispensation of forgiveness and love. Living each day in integrity in the moment of choice is about choosing God over man, love over unforgiveness, joy over pain. Not as funny as hair spray or getting a little sprinkle before bath time, but we all have critical moments each day, and my prayer is that we all pass the test, and move one step closer to bearing Christ’s Image. Blessings to you, Annie
Oh there are so many critical moments...just before the Diet Coke hits my throat, just after I bite into the breakfast taco and before the fire from the Pace Picante releases all those endorphins into my system, and then there is the critical moment when deciding to get up and go to Bible Study or to sit down on the couch with the laundry instead. Even if you think you are being more productive by staying home and getting chores done, God can be more productive through you if you get off your franny and go study His Word with the ladies!
Hi Amanda. I can totally relate to your "tinkle time" effect.
I think my most critical moment is the space of time between when my mouth engages and my brain. There always seems to be a lag and there are times I end up going "Doh, I shouldn't have said that", or "That came out all wrong".
My biggest struggle is choosing my words well and to slow down. Its not that my words are hurtful to anyone, just not the wisest ones I could have chosen.
LOL. What an absolute great, awful, and funny "Mommy moment". I don't use hairspray either (another gasp!) but I have plenty of "critical moments". Now, I have a term for the event.

LOL! that's the mommies baptism.
:)
That brought back so many memories - so, whether spiritual or not, it is so good to just smile and remember those days! They are gone so quickly! Enjoy them . . . I believe Abba so smiles also!
I experience "critical moments" every day - he (she) who has ears to hear let him (her) hear what the Spirit is saying . . . I so try to listen and obey so that these moments do not really become "critical"! I need all that grace when it is first poured out or I will have to cry - MERCY!
I fixed that "critical moment" by undressing my daughter right by the bathtub and sticking her in immediatley... now that she is 2, she thinks it is a game to run away before I can stick her naked little self in the tub!! Have fun.. at least the "spitting up" stage has passed!

Hello! One of my critical moments is between the time I wake up and put my glasses and "ears" on. I cannot see or hear until I do those two things! And, if I don't put my glasses in the same place or they fall off the nightstand before I go to bed, someone has to help me find them . . . *sigh*
I'm enjoying this blog. . .heard your mom speak in Knoxville in September 2005. . .what a great experience that was!
Thank you for all you do!
Amanda, you are so right! I think God gives us many critical moments during a day (especially when we have children). We have the "teachable moments" that if we are not careful get lost in the busyness of life. Then there are the moments when God say do something now and that is when we must remember that "He is who He says He is" and be obedient. Today, I just finished leading a Breaking Free bible study at our church. God gave me one of those critical moments in November by saying "lead this study and trust in me!" That was huge for me because my biggest stronghold is fear - fear of public speaking!! I was obedient and God delivered 39 women to the study. Today many of the women testified to how God worked miracles in their lives over the past 10 weeks. God moved BIG and is still working huge things out for these women!!! Praise God He truly has such great things for those that trust in Him. On a different note I loved the LA LPL video and it has me pumped and ready for the Columbia SC conference!! I can't wait to be in praise and worship with all my "sistas" raising our voices to our ABBA - father!!
Amanda ... what a wonderful chuckle the mental picture of Jackson "anointing" you provided. Probably not a mom among us who has not "been there - done that".
What I really want to say to you sweet sista, is that you undoubtedly are as gifted a writer as your mother. I love reading your posts. You have a MARVELOUS way with words. God's using you in a mighty way already but I predict He's got GREAT plans in store for you!

Dear Amanda dear,
I missed meeting you in San Francisco, but since then I've found this blog and I am happily getting to know you and your sweet son!
I have six lovelies (age 25 down to 10 year old twins) and one of my twins has Down Syndrome. I read Debi Pearl's recommended book on potty training called "Trickle Treat" when they were 6 months old and potty trained them then. Their bladders can't "hold", but they do have release cues (cold air, etc.) as you've noticed. I enjoyed training them early and thought it was as fun as playing house, but not everyone is interested and that's okay, too. His cueing you just reminded me. Blessings fall on you and yours!
Karen Bennetto
Amanda,
I had to chuckle at your entry as I remember those times...try it with twin boys...one on each hip and then seeing them giggle like there is no tomorrow.
My spirtual critical moment is when I can feel God whispering...and He has always done that in our journey together...His whisperings get persistant when I choose not to listen....I suddenly realize that it is in those whispers that he is asking me to sit and be still and listen....on that I know it is time to do as He asks...but first I am on my knees to tell him sorry for not listening the first time. Thank goodness His mercy and love is new each day.
Thank you for sharing these moments of real life and moments.
That was precious!! And the fact that you are loving your baby, and conscientious about such important things as water temp That has MUCH spiritual value, us older women are CALLED to teach younger one to Love their husbands and children!! And you are doing it!!!
Praise HIM!
k
My critical moment is when I open the puppy's crate in the morning to let him go potty. I need to grab him and get him outside RIGHT NOW or it's over for us. :)
Kristi
My serious one is The drive to my job. It's my time to get in a "do it right God set of mind" If I spend that time mad about traffic or thinking about negative stuff, every time work goes the direction I so want to avoid.

My critical moment came when I found out you don't use hairspray! Did you have to do a 12 step program to get off of it??
Amanda,
I love this question. I had a moment like this about a month ago when a friend invited me to see your Mom teach on Tuesday nights. I had been wondering if she still taught in Houston during the week, but had not thought about her studies since two or three years ago when I had done the last one. Fifteen minutes later my friend called and invited me to join her. I said "yes", hopped in the car that next Tuesday and my relationship with my Father has never been the same.
I came to hear your Mom, but I found truth that totally transformed my love for my God.
As she puts it, I have become totally "eaten up" with Jesus and I am lovin' every minute of it. Wholeness is indeed contagious. Thank you both for all you do.
Amanda, that was hilarious! Thanks for the chuckle tonight. Sorely needed after a rough day!! I have two sons of my own and can relate from days long past.
Blessings,
Paulette from East Texas
Hahahahah!!!! Oh my, I needed that laugh. All three of mine did that, and two are girls. Now that tthe oldest is 9 and the youngest 5 we don't have those particular moments. The critical moment that most comes to mind is catching them as soon as they finish their morning stuff and before they come up with a "plan" of what they want to do so I can get them doing what I want them to do without a battle--like school and chores. It occurs to me that the Lord has that same critical moment in my own life--getting me when I have done the "has to be done stuff" and before I start coming up with all kinds of distractions from what He has planned for my day,
Since I for one do not go out of the house until I have crowned myself with the full armor of Aveda, I may never get over the fact that you quit wearing hair spray. I can only pray that it was a decision you reached after seeking much godly counsel.
Should you determine that repentance is necessary in this area, please take comfort in knowing that we will welcome you back into the fold with open arms and full cans of the Aveda product of your choosing. Hallelujah.
;-)
My critical moment usually happens the moment before I am about ready to NOT walk in freedom, but to act like my old self. He gives me just a moment to remind me that He's given me a new heart, and I don't have to keep going back to old patterns either in thought or in speech/action. Your mom has driven it into me that we act out of our belief systems, so I would have to say it's right before I choose to believe Him or not.
On a lighter note, I have three girls, and the critical moments for them are whether or not they end up going to the bathroom or doing the "pee-pee" dance as we like to call it! Blessings to you Sweethearts!
P.S. Amanda, some of us met your parents up here in Seattle at the LPL conference. There was a woman named Carmen who your mother moved front and center in the morning session. She had cancer and was given three months to live. She was failing and then one day she got through the entire day and all of a sudden remembered she had not taken her pain medication all day. She looked at her husband and (Believe and therefore Speak) said, "I'm healed". She is too! Glory to God, Blessed Be the Rock Who is Our Reedemer! Just thought Miss Beth would like to know!
Hi Amanda,
Could you please get an update to your mom? I just came from our Wednesday night bible study (we just completed Daniel and it was AWSOME!!) When your mom was here in Seattle, WA in February she prayed for a sista of ours who had been diagnosed with pancreatic cancer and was given only 3 months to live. Her name is Karmen and her one wish before she died was to attend the conference and it was a dream come true. Your mom heard about her story and in typical Beth fashion had her receive VIP seating in the front row and shared her story with the body of believers and we/she prayed and asked God for her healing. We just received an awesome praise report tonight that her drs. ran the pet scans, blood tests etc. and the tumor in her pancreas is completely gone and the sprinkling of cancer in her spine and other areas is shrinking!! The dreaded 3 months the drs. gave her is here and they are seeing nothing but improvements PTL. Please keep praying for her complete healing and please, please, please give your mom this update.
Thanks so much!!
From one mother of boys to another, ALWAYS KEEP "IT" UNDER WRAPS SO TO SPEAK!!!!
Love to you all,
Angela
Forget MY critical moment. I need to know why you quit using hairspray. Did you quit cold-turkey? Did you seek treatment? How bad were the DT's? Are you able to roll with your friends who still use? If my husband is in the bathroom with me while I'm spraying he always says, "You know, the first step is admitting that you have a problem."
Dear Amanda, you have such a rich gift of narration, the way you worded this blog entry...oh wow i am still laughing!!!
as a 'newbie' in my Christian walk, my Critical Moment is ALWAYS that split second between continuing on my walk with Christ or dropping back into the pit... the instant within which you still have a moment's pause before "it" happens...

Dear friends,
This may not be the right place to do this, but I just now (Thurs AM) read a news account about a lady from the LPL event in LA reported missing. Not knowing all the details, I pray there's a good explanation but would any of you reading this please pray for her and her family. It said she is a pastor's wife from Alabama. O Lord may she be safe and secure somewhere and quickly restored to her family!
Thank you and
Love to all
Amanda,
My critical moment is when I have the choice to be controlling or loving. It's when I'm called to love the someone in my life that is the thorn in my side and I know that I won't get any points for loving her but God knows the whole story and knows that I'll be happier in the long run if I do the right thing.
This just happened Tuesday morning. I made the right choice and God honored it and I was blessed in spite of my reluctant but obedient spirit.
Thanks Amanda for making me think. I read your blog yesterday and couldn't come up with a critical moment. It reminds me of your Mom's Bible studies. She often asks us to find a time in our past where we experienced something that we're studying. I have so much trouble with those questions but after mulling over it for a while, an incident will come to me and a light will turn on. Thanks again! Love, Su from CO
I have been having a critical week! I am currently reading Heaven by Randy Alcore and although, yes, some things are speculative as he readily admits, I have been so refreshed by the biblical perspective he provides of what eternal life will be like. A critical moment I am so looking forward to---seeing God's face and hugging Jesus' neck! My prayer for all of us "cool sista's" is that we will listen more intently for God and see Him in our everyday lives.
I can't wait to visit the Moore clan in their beautiful mansions and sit down to feast with our Lord and Savior and all of my sister bloggers. We have a big job to do right now though that involves showing others the way to Christ and eternal life. Let's not miss the critical moments that may be the key to another finding Salvation!
I have a little girl, but we also have that kind of critical moment, right after bath time. You just better make sure the diaper is on asap!
I also experienced one of God's critical moments a couple of Sundays ago. I'm not sure why but I felt compelled to make out a tithe check but not put it in the offering plate. I usually make out our tithe once every two weeks when we are paid but this check was for more than usual. So . . . I made it out and the following pay day, my husband brought home a substantial amount of over time. Praise God! I am so glad that He choses to speak to a sinner so unworthy!
My "fun" critical moment is making it to Starbucks every morning between 7am and 7:15 because anytime after 7:15am my "irritated" mood swing kicks in while standing in the 10+ people line with only one cashier and one coffeemaker :) Can anyone relate :)
Fun critical moment: that eon-long instant between seeing a forbidden item become interesting to my 2-year-old and actually making it over to take it away!
amanda, i don't have time to read through every single comment so perhaps someone has already mentioned this - and maybe not as applicable for bathtimes as for diaper-changing times, but have you heard of pee-pee tee-pees? my friends with little boys swear by them! you can check them out at: http://www.amazon.com/Peepee-Teepee-Sprinkling-WeeWee-Airplanes/dp/B000EBQ8DI
I've been tinkled on (and lots of other things!) by all 4 of my kids boys and girls1 You'd think I'd have faster reflexes and better planning by now! he he! I have to laugh reading y'all's responses because so many are my critical moments. I guess I have to agree with the Sista who said her critical moment is biting her tongue when her husband says something that comes out wrong (ME TOO, that is so hard sometimes!). Also big is that moment when I'm not sure if God is trying to tell me to do or say something or not. Yes, I too have given up hairspray lol! I enjoy both you and your Mom's posts!
Blessings,
Kathleen

speaking of critical moments with little boys...never, EVER, talk to a little boy while he is standing at the toilet. A wise mother will, "hold that thought" until he is finished so he doesn't turn to talk to her. Are you picturing it???
I can so relate to the tinkle moment! My son just turned one last week. I have started letting him stand at the tub and take the diaper off just before he gets in! Less time for the air to set in!

Last week I received an email from someone on our church staff asking if there was someone whose feet I would be willing to wash in the service. The pastor was preaching on the woman washing Jesus' feet and anointing them. Our pastor wanted a few people who would be willing to do this in worship to the Lord and out of gratefulness for who that person has been to us. I immediately had a friend come to mind but waited to respond to the email because I thought I might appear "holier than thou" in front of everyone washing my friend's feet. Two days later I sensed the Spirit telling me to respond to that email. So, we had the foot washing and it was a very sweet experience We were both blessed! God spoke to my friend about being vulnerable and allowing someone to serve her in that way (she hates her feet). God spoke to me about pride and how it was prideful of me because I feared what people would think about it when I was really being obedient to what he asked of me.
There's nothing like the annointing from your first-born! My critical moment comes when I go to clean the bathroom from two older boys and a hubby...I always want to shout, "You know, the opening is large enough!" God has been faithful in holding my tongue in check (mostly) Blessings of love and laughter, Kim B in PA
I would love to have a critical hair moment again. It's been a mild winter they say here where we serve--the low has only been -23C! Keep in mind that 0C or 32F is freezing. When we go outside along with 5 layers of clothes I must wear earmuffs and a hat! The problem comes when I go indoors! Oh no the hat must come off! I told my husband that I've never had so many bad hair days! I try to keep my hair short even with the cold. That way when the hat comes off it either sticks straight up or lays flat and it's more tolerable. Never mind the static electricity--that's another story! But spring is in the air! Maybe I will have a critical hair moment and go outside with nice hair! It's a small price to pay however when we know we're living where so many have never heard.
One of the most critical of moments occurs for me when the enemy, along with principalities and powers of darkness of this age and spiritual hosts of wickedness in high places, attempts to sow seeds of doubt. There comes a split second when I must choose between putting up my shield of faith or giving in to the doubt. By God's grace and for His glory alone, my weak trembling arms are getting stronger and my shield of faith is more likely to be up than down. Hallelujuh!
Now, lest you think I'm more spiritual than you ought, here's a beauty tip/critical moment. After applying moisturizing cream to your face, the critical moment occurs between the time it takes to get the extra cream applied to the unsightly, dry, cracked skin of your elbows before the excess moisturizer dries on your hands. No guarantees, but I noticed a difference after about a week.
I want you to know thatI read these comments so I can know how to pray for you.
Blessings to you all,

Hello there,
My critical moment, is right now as I speak. I have been a so called christian for a couple of years now but have walked away from god and the whole church thing over 5 months now. I struggle with it as my life is crap. I dont know what to do. well thats my critical moment as we speak. I guess its not that bad, I guess not all people are meant for god and I am one of them. thanks for listening
Oh how truely different and cute!!!
Oh how I needed a good laugh!!!

Dear Anonoymous, (comment from 3/31 at 9:37 PM)
I want you to know that an anonymous prayer warrior sister is standing in the gap for you even as I type this, praying that your strongholds will be demolished through divinely powerful weapons. (see 2 Corinthians 10:4) I truly hope you're not offended, but this was the verse the Holy Spirit of God prompted me to pray for you.
Girl, if you think for one New York skinny minute, or second for that matter, that not all people were meant for God or that you're that one person - you are believing a lie from the pit of hell. The Truth is that we are God's workmanship and we are created in His image.
I'm not in a position, nor do I have the authority to offer spiritual counsel, but I want you to know that I'll be interceding for you daily, and I'm sure I won't be the only sister praying for you. When I don't know what to say, or how to pray for you, the Spirit Himself intercedes for the saints according to the will of God. (see Romans 8:26-27)
Blessings to you my sister,
An anonymous prayer warrior
Such a delightful llustration...or as Mrs. Claudia would put it, object lesson.
I would say my critical moment is getting my eye liner on just right! Uuggh! As for my spiritual moments... discernment can be a dangerous thing especially when you have a lot of passion and some seriously tender teenage toes under your roof. My two teenage daughters have friends with somewhat questionable standards... one of which has a strong power of influence over nearly the entire youth group at our church. This one just so happens to be my oldest daughter's best friend. My critical moment comes when I have the opportunity to make my daughter aware of the caution signs in her friends life without creating a spirit of offense around the subject. They often see the caution as attack - truthfully, the cautions often come when I see that the influence of others is leading my children to disrespectful or spiritually dangerous behavior... some of it I want them to learn on their own, but other things I feel I must say out loud. Lately, I find less times to say those things and more time to build the relationship with their friend, who has expressed a great deal of respect for me and my opinion of her. So... now I find the opportunity to minister rather than nitpick!
One of the most horrible things I have ever said in a critical moment is "Hot Topic is the bane of my existence." This came on the heels of a particularly rebellious run with my children when they were very taken with this particular store and its "cult like" apparel. It sparked a serious debate among the girls in the youth group as we discussed what is or is not particularly disturbing at Hot Topic. At that point I had literally forbidden my children to shop at any stores with provocative advertising or thematic merchandise. It was a challenge for them to go shopping at Christmas last year! By the end of the season, the point was well taken and the girls had relented to the idea that Mom might know something about what she was talking about.
It is truly an awesome thing when a critical moment is siezed and I have a heart to heart moment with my girls about their lives and our God. My oldest and I had a deep conversation about "One Night With A King" that ended with her admitting she was frustrated that all her "bad girl gone good" friends who seemed to have just the right guy land in their life recently while she is struggling to find a good guy friend to "date." My daughter has set very high standards, and many boys find her a bit intimidating which makes me giddy proud! But, it also sets her up for heartbreak when she hopes in a boy she gets to know only to find out he is not who she believed he could be. I ended up telling her, "The way I see it, you are the blessed one... Your friends have spent a lot of time 'trying boys on to see if they fit' rather than waiting for God to bring them just the right one. You however have standards and you are waiting and praying for the Lord to introduce you to the right boy. How wonderful will it be when His choice walks into your life and you know it... and that is all she wrote." From the standpoint of a mom who was guilty of trying them on to see if they fit long into her middle 20s... I told her she should be trusting God to bring the man for her rather than hoping in a boy that is not at all what God has in mind for her. She received it with such joy - and she is such a blessing! I love them both so much... My girls the other day said which of us do you love more? I told them I love you equally for different reasons, but I love you both just the same. They would not have to compete for my love, my devotion or my support. That is a long explanation of my critical moment. Sorry to be long, but I am so blessed.

I have been thinking long and hard about a "critical moment". And, I've had many as everyone has. But, I would have to say one of the most critical moments came, on August 24, 1999, when about 6 hours after my two precious children had been in their fathers house when it exploded because of a gas leak.
My 7 yr old daughter miraculously escaped with little injury (cut on her ear, and bumps and bruises, claiming she'd been carried out by angels!!!) but my 5 year old son had much more serious injuries, and almost bled to death in the medi-helicopter on the way to the hospital.
At about 6 hours after the explosion, my son was out of surgery and I got my first "look" at him, and began to "become undone", when loud and clear I heard my Father's (in Heaven) voice (and I know this is crude, but this is what I heard in my spirit or ears, either way I heard it . . .) "Shut-up, sit down and get out of the way! He is my child before he was your and I need you out of the way."
So I went and sat down in the rocking chair beside his bed (yes, they have rocking chairs in PICU). And, if I hadn't obeyed, and stayed out of the way, my son may not have pulled through. His blood pressure would bottom out, when ever I got really upset, because he even though he was asleep, the nurses said he wanted to make himself "come out of the medically induced coma" and be his mama's comforter, but he needed to rest in that coma instead, so his body could begin to heal.
In our lives before this happened, I was a pretty over bearing mom, afraid of everything that might hurt my kids. They were clingy and had separation anxiety issues because of my behavior. THIS turned me around. And I fully understood that my kids were NOT my kids their are HIS kids! And I fully trust HIM everyday with them.
P.S. Note that they have both fully and completely been restored and healed, and don't even have any bad post traumatic issue AT ALL!!! Our WHOLE town was praying for them!!! PRAISE OUR GOD!!!
Critical moments are often the ones
we think will never happen, even when we have a host of prayer support leading up to them !
Case in point, knowing you need to
lovingly confront a family member about a difficult decision that needs to be made and stepping out in faith to make it happen.
This recently was my critical moment and it seemed like despite my initial doubts God kept opening small windows of opportunity to till the soil. Still amazed at how much things have changed in such a short time period since that moment !!! Many miracles both small and large have taken
place as a result and some are still manifesting as we speak.
Someday I will probably write it all down in detail but for now suffice it to say GOD the Father,
Son and Holy Spirit is VERY MUCH
active in the world even when it
seems like it will take moving HEAVEN and EARTH in our own strength to accomplish the goal !!! Colossians 1:17 "He is before all things and in HIm all things hold together."
