Mosh Pit
Siestas!
Howdy from Hot-lanta, and when I say “Hotlanta”, I hope you are not sensing any trendy connotation, because I am simply alluding to the miserably hot weather we have had around here as of late. Wow. I didn’t think that a city could get hotter than Houston, but Atlanta is a tough competitor right now. Since newlyweds don’t have a bunch of extra money to spend on cranking up the air conditioning, I have been sleeping with my hair wet to keep me cooler at night! It almost works, y’all!
So, yesterday I got to experience something that I am sure I will not soon forget. Colin and I headed out to go and listen to a good friend of ours preach at the youth service at his church. He is the youth pastor there and since they have a sizable youth group, they have a completely separate worship service. They even have their own building. We walked in and saw a familiar sight- a dark room with bright lights and kids jumping up and down. They actually had formed a mosh pit of sorts in front of the worship band, which was itself composed of students in the youth group.
It was amazing what happened as I made my way to my seat. I began to shut down. Even though it was only seven or eight years ago that I would have easily found myself in their exact positions, I quickly became one of the dreaded frozen chosen. What a bizarre and devastating feeling. All of the sudden I was a spectator in this youth service rather than being a participant. I even began to critique all that I was surrounded by, surveying our younger generation’s heartbeat for Christ to discern whether it was authentic or not. I suppose the older we get, the more power we think we have to take our place in the judgment seat…I had to remind myself that I will never be old enough for that position, for that throne is reserved for none other than the Ancient of Days. In my shame, I thought to myself, “So this is how this happens…this is how one becomes one of the frozen and cynical chosen…and I’m only 25, I’m so doomed.”
Well, I am so glad that I went yesterday to this youth service because I left with conviction, encouragement, and exhortation. After my friend preached a solid sermon out of the book of Esther no less, he exhorted the students to seize the moment to pursue the purpose God had for each of them in such a time as this. He then asked several of the students to make their way to the front to give their testimonies about what God had been doing in their lives.
And then it happened…I was awestruck. A girl, clearly unacquainted with southern church jargon began to describe her recent experience with Jesus Christ. She described herself as feeling completely ecstatic, almost bubbling over with life. She was so overjoyed that she couldn’t even put it into words. She said, “I think about Him (Jesus Christ) all of the time…every second, I just can’t stop thinking about Him. And I am just so tired of being a person that I don’t want to be!”
There it was: trans-generational truth. You see, she was still trying to emotionally recover from the almost too phenomenal realization that Jesus Christ can really change the jacked up person she knows she is in her heart. And I pray that she never does recover from this divine reality. Too many of us do.
Worship styles and preferences change pretty quickly but our need remains the same. Our need for God and the hope that He instills in our hearts, it translates to every generation. I am so glad that students around the world are worshipping God, meeting together and exhorting one another and praising God together in their own contexts. I am so glad that they continue to follow hard after God in spite of frozen chosen adults like me who stand in the crowd with their arms folded, because I think they are doing exactly what Paul exhorted Timothy to do. They aren’t letting people like me look down on them because of their youthfulness, but rather in their speech, conduct, love, faith, and purity, they are showing themselves to be examples (1 Tim. 4.12). I am even more thankful that these students have leaders like my friend Jamie who gives his life to point students upward to acknowledge the supremacy of Christ.
Praise God for a younger generation of students who are showing themselves to be worthy examples to some of us who allow our hearts to get a little bit too hard. I am so privileged to be associated with them in Christ. I, too, like my young new sister in Christ am so tired of being someone I don’t want to be. I am so glad that we know that the solution is in Christ. It is for this that she and I will continue to labor and strive, because we both have fixed our hope on the living God, who is the Savior of all men” (1 Tim. 4.10). Well, perhaps I’ll even join the mosh pit with her next time. Okay, so maybe I won’t bodily join the mosh pit, but I will be there in spirit!
Cheers to the only Wise God, the Lord Jesus Christ who gives us hope, and the Holy Spirit who empowers us!

You are so great, because you really show your feelings andfor a young women in christ like myself, it can get lonely. So many times I connect with what you share, and I feel, at least, "if Melissa feels like this, I'm not alone."
Thank you for your bravery, you compassion and honesty.
Love and Blessings,
Molly Summer
P.S. You also show an illustration of how much fun a girl can have loving christ, I forget this sometimes. Thank You.
Melissa,
This post really speaks to me and a situation that happens just yesterday. My 12 year daughter put up a graphic from a Christian metal band as her new wallpaper and I immediately thought it wasn't "Christian"-enough. Your post reminds me that our expressions of christianity don't all look the same and I need to be careful that I don't get "frozen"! I normally embrace all types of music under the christian label, but for some reason, I got all judgmental (and old) and began complaining. Hey, it is a christian band, so what in the world was my problem? Thanks for the reminder to stay "fluid" and not let my faith become frozen.
I'm counting the days until the Deeper Still conference! I don't care if it is hot as all get-out! I'm ready for the Word and the Praisin' that will happen!
Melissa, You are sooo wise for 25!! My prayer today (and I am of an entirely different generation than you) is "Oh Lord Jesus, please deliver me from 'the frozen chosen' which I too often try to join. It is not my place, job, calling or whatever to judge. Thank You for raising up some really amazing young people." My beautiful, amazing teenage grandaughters have begun to teach this ol' Christian just how awesome a God we serve.
I thank you so much for this post. I am right now struggling desparately for an answer to a very awful dilemma. I became a member of a church about a year ago and absolutely love the pastor and his wife. This is a very small church. Too small for me as I am finding out. I am a single mother with 2 small children. The members are all married (not a single or divorced in the bunch) Nonexistent ministries (my child is the only steady one in sunday school) and I am constantly being "watched". I am frustrated, sad and disheartened. I WANT A MOSH PIT kinda group!!! (Not literally) but I was also curious about "frozen chosen". I feel like I am being horribly judgmental of others and very selfish, but do I stay in a Church where I am miserable and constantly under the microscope. What do I do? Pray for me and any suggestions from ya'll darling Siestas...send em my way. I will write the whole story on my blog now w/out names or anything. I would so appreciate ya'll helping me out and praying for me because I do not want to be "frozen" or judgmental. I want to worship the Most High with power, strength, love, conviction, unhindered and NOT JUDGED!!!! Bless you!!!
My sons youth group just got back from a week long mission trip in Dallas (we attend a chuch in Utah). While there they served with 4 different churches on various projects. As I listened to him talk about the things God was doing in him I was convicted and encouraged to refocus my life on Jesus and what is important. We should never count these young ones out. God is moving and if we will stop and really listen we just might just learn a little from them!
Love you all, have a blessed Monday.
AMEN!!!
Thank you for sharing. I too shut down all too often. Lord, please open my heart to your love and let me see you today in all your glory.
Thank you for the authenticity and freshness of new believers. Please help the new believers in our church to never lose their love for Jesus and their ability to express their love.
That, young lady, IS A WORD!
Oh Melissa! It is so neat that you shared this experience with us at a time that the youth of our church just returned from Impact Camp and shared in last night's service the impact it had on all of them. What a touching and encouraging experience to see these kids on fire for God and eager to spread that fire throughout their schools and community!
Like you, I've fallen into the "frozen chosen" category... but PRAISE GOD I can still be moved when I see a group of young people worshipping Him with all of their hearts and in their own energetic ways. May I never discount their committment and sincere desire to be all that God created them to be just because they don't fit into the mold of our "more dignified" worship services.
More power to them.... More of God's perfect power that is!! :)
Blessings to all of you with love,
Terry :)
I so pray that all the young people will have a chance to know our Lord,so mnay don't.It is so good to hear of the ones that do.God bless love you all sister in Christ Victoria NC
I had a similar experience at the last Passion event I volunteered at. All I could think was, "I'm getting old!" (I was 32.) I felt bad about it at first, but then in a way I was grateful because I couldn't have served the students effectively if I was caught up in a frenzy of emotion. I was there to serve them with prayer and counsel, so I needed that calm and quiet spirit to clearly hear from the Holy Spirit in each interaction. Looking back, it was for the best.
Melissa!
Thanks for the word, girl! It is timely for me to read this because I live at the Glorieta Conference Center, and we have 900 Centrifuge youth coming in today! Yikes! I have been thinking about what this might be like, and before I can be cynical, God sent me a reminder through your words. Thank you so much!
I miss Hotlanta like you wouldn't believe, but after FREEZING out here in New Mexico all winter, I am proud to say it is in the mid-eighties, breezy and no humidity! Praise HIM!
Love Y'all!
Holly, NM
PS I am still trying to find a way to San Antonio! I really want to be there!
MERCY, girl! You always just get me fired UP!
Thank you for that Word...Maybe all us "frozen chosen" need a good thaw in Hot-lanta (or you could all just come on down here to Tampa, Flame-ida).
Hi Princess writes -
To the "Proverbs woman wanna be":
I was raised in the church from birth, but I was also raised by a single mother. She is a mighty woman of GOD who has lived her life honorably as an illustration for me. But she and I have felt that eyeing of those wondering who we were, because we were on our own, like, what might my mom have done to have this happen? I've seen women keep there distance, as if we would steal thier men. I've seen men be embarrassed to talk to us in fear they might get in trouble. When all we needed was maybe a smile, from anyone.
But TAKE HOPE, I have also seen men and women in the church embrace us for who we are, honorable, beautiful and SAVED women of GOD, and I believe they have made the difference. I will tell you, the most excrutiating feeling I have ever had, has been being ignored or isolated by christians. But it happens; the LORD is your everything, and your childrens everything. I will pray you find a church that is a bit more "FLUID," but if that is way off, know that you have fellow believers who have been there and refuse to let the frozen stares of others extinguish the fire of GOD.
You are loved by GOD and adored as a beautiful and honorable woman of the LORD - REST IN THAT,
God Bless You,
Molly
Okay............I am clearly too old. Please tell me what a "Mosh Pit" is? It couldn't be one of the "Get out of the pit and stay out of the Pits", Beth writes about but as a reformed pit dweller, Icautiously approach any pit, not wanting to ever receive mail there again. So for "pits" sake, please explain!
Thanks for sharing! :-) I see this within the church I currently attend. While we may not have a mosh pit, we are trying to examine the purpose of our "traditions." There are SO many ways to worship the Lord. . .and many ways to bring Him glory! <><
Thanks for a great post! I'm sure my grandparents would cringe if they were still alive to see the kind of church I go to (clapping, raising hands, electric guitars in church???) - and yet we worship, serve and love the One True God. He reaches every generation - and He'll do however He sees fit... even if it's in a mosh pit!!! Thank you for reminding me that not everyone worships in the way I do, and yet it is no less worship. Your transparency is inspiring, Melissa!
I was sixteen years old when I had my encounter with our Lord and Savior , I was at a David and Giants concert out in New Orleans, La. I was so estatic about the Lord and running down the street screaming Praise You Lord.
I too have teenagers that I want to judge them and tell them their not holy enough truth be told I let my walk with the Lord get luke warm. But now more because I feel way convicted . I want so much to feel like I felt when I first accepted Him in my Life. I guess you can say life and not being married to a beliver got in the way.
I love your honesty! I just want to get on my face before the Lord and truly ,truly repent for my arrorgance because my 12 year old daughter is seeking after Him.
Love to all of my Sister!
Sue
Thank you for sharing this...your honesty speaks so clearly of how we older Christians expect worship to be 'done' only in ways we are comfortable with. Our 21 year old daughter loves to worship the Lord, and heavy metal/hardcore is the style of music that she expresses her love to Him in. Few understand it and even fewer will accept that as valid...the Lord is blessed by her worshipping heart...just as He is blessed by this youth group's worship of Him!
What is a mosh pit? A bunch of folks mooshed together? And why is it called MOSH?
I have been feeling convicted in this area recently....and this post has furthered that. My husband and I teach a junior high Sunday School class that is really quite small (between 3-10 students each week). So many times I feel myself getting frustrated with them, wondering why they don't get the gospel, why they don't pay attention in Sunday School, and why they just make me nuts somedays.
What God has started to show me, though, is that ten years ago, I was these kids. I was thirteen. I didn't get the gospel, I didn't pay attention, and I know I drove people nuts.
It is by the grace of God that I "got" the gospel, that I started to pay attention, and that the Word of God became real to me. Now I am in an incredible place, a place where I can pray for these students, and I can reach out and share my lives with them, rather than become frustrated with them. May we never try to usurp the judgment seat!
HOT-ATLANTA is right! We are definitely experiencing record highs!
I have been working with youth for quite some time now and have watched the generational "style" of services change. Melissa, I have often questioned the authenticity of our youth and adults hearts as well as but God always brings me back to the same thing...He is the judge. It causes me to examine my own heart. I will say one thing about the youth today, so many are much more knowledgeable of God's word than I ever was at their age! As I say, you do whatever it takes to reach people for Christ. Jesus went to where the people were.
What an amazing point that will be taken to heart by many today, tomorrow and beyond. Thank you for giving those of us that need the wake up call regarding youth and their faith. We do forget what it is like to be young and in love!
Thanks again!

AMEN SIESTA!!!!!!! Thank you for being so open to God and sharing what He shows you. I am "old"....what is a mosh pit???
God moves in His mysterious ways to let all of us know what He wants us to "hear". Keep on keepin on Melissa. God is definitely on the move in your life.

Praise and Worship styles are one of those rib bones your mother talks about. Thanks so much for that reminder. I just sent my 14 year old off to youth camp!
Amen!
Melissa,
thanks for your honesty..
Good thing God allows His kids to come with all shapes, sizes, personalities, colours, thoughts, feelings, emotions, ideas. Good thing He adores the "humanity" in us all :D
The more I know my Saviour I realise that He's more multi-faceted and complex than I could have ever imagined. In all our 'differences' His many facets are reflected in us.
God Bless you melissa.. happy newlewedding!! (and yes, 'newlewedding' is a verb).. hahaha
buenos dias!
related story of how I met my husband: i come from a mosh pit youth group- this very cute guy with a foot tall purple mohawk and his ears gauged a full inch played the base. One of my first nights at this church, when I was an avowed atheist, he stage dived into the crowd which didn't see him coming and he landed on his face!!!! It was hilarious! I never stopped going! And then I married him! THANK GOD FOR RELEVANT CHURCHES.
OH GIRL!!! You have said it! I don't want to be a frozen chosen either, but I find myself slipping into that reality sometimes. I'm 31 and I don't want to look down on the youth like some of the older christians look at me when I raise my hands and sway back and forth to worship music.
Thanks for the gentle reminder. And girl, I love the way you write!
Prayers and Blessings!
Rebecca
P.S. Is there any possibility that you can share a day in the life of research? That might bore some of the other readers to tears, but I love research and would be encouraged to see how you do it. Thanks! By the way, your mom's talk about airmail from Atlanta made me want to go home and back some of the goodies myself! How sweet of you to send that package to your mama!
Melissa,
we ALL struggle with this. I think it is hard to remain muse that means we have to stand closer to the fire. To a certain extent we are all afraid of that fire, even when we profess to love it.
Thank you for your honesty.
To His Princess....Thank you so much for that beautiful expression of caring for this very hurt and confused siesta!!! Bless the LPM women for this site and the ability for us all to reach out to one another and ENCOURAGE!!! Miss Molly you rock and thank God for your response.
In Him, Kristin
and one more note.. even the 'frozen chosen' represent an beautiful 'facet' of God's character.. quiet, still, and delightfully peaceful. :D
oh to know the Saviour more and begin to recognize His in each other :D!
Ok, I could barely differentiate between your writing and your mom's! Amazing insight in transferring your heart to words that I can wrap myself around. Melissa, thank you for the transparency. I believe God wants to do even more amazing works in your life and take what your mom's ministry is and bring it too HIS next level. Praise Him. You, Amanda, Curt and Beth are so instramental in kingdom work and I love you all dearly and pray for you and LPM regularly. Blessings.

Thanks for the word Melissa. At 58 years old I am sometimes horrified to hear the things that come out of my mouth like, "Why do we have to change it?....We never did that before, why now?....I'm not going to like it.... Those young kids are a too loud (meaning the teens) etc. I never wanted to become one of those few older folk who complained about change all the time and yet I find myself saying the things I never though I would. thankfully as soon as it's out of my mouth the Holy Spirit allows me to hear how petty I am. Ouch. Now I try to see God in the situation and that help to keep my tongue in check.
Melissa, you almost made me want to quit bible study, I never want to get to that ugly place where a youth mosh pit turns me off. Young Life Rocks, and I think Jesus really smiles when he sees people like your friend Jamie, loving His children. I'm 53 and I am continuously floored with how God works in mosh pit programs. If you are not relevent you will quickly turn into a relic.(Paul Scanlon)
Melissa:
What a great reminder, that you and I don't know the hearts of others. Only the ANCIENT OF DAYS!!
Thank you for sharing your experience from yesterday with us, and for reminding us to be more real.
Lovingly,
Yolanda
Amen! I, too, don't want to be a "frozen chosen."
Melissa,
Thanks for sharing. The thing that struck me was the young girl saying she just couldn't stop thinking about Jesus...I stopped and prayed that He would help me to love Him more and have that joy of thinking about Him all the time.
My teenage children attend a mosh pit kind of youth group. I would rather be there to worship than anywhere else in the church. My 16 year old is usually right in the middle of things. How wonderful to have the freedom to dance and jump for Him. We, the frozen chosen, could use some of that.
God bless you!
Missy C.
Last year, my husband and I visited a church and part way into the worship, he leans over and whispers "I didn't know we were coming to one of those all night rave parties." To this day, we still refer to it as "the rave church". I'm just glad they put the words up on the screen, so we don't feel REALLY old saying, "I can't understand a thing they're saying."
Gotta love it.

How timely! I have been praying that God would help me to lose any judgemental thoughts in my mind. It it His kindness that leads us to repentance.
I'm 57 and I'm jumping in the mosh pit with them. Some shifts occurred in my heart two years ago when I despaired even of life and I've never recovered for I see Him in ways I never have, I long for Him like never before, and am alive in ways I've never been. I don't want to recover like I was before. I really liked what you wrote! It got my attention this first day of SCHOOL'S FINALLY OUT! You stirred my heart! You made me think of David saying---I will become even more undistinguished than this in my worship of HIM! Thanks precious Melissa! Bev
My heart beats to every word you wrote. I think it's time to be real and unashamed. What a great encouragement the young girl has been to so many who have read your words today! What a great word!
Bless you Melissa for realizing that none of us need to set ourselves up as a judge. He called us to be a WITNESS - not judge and/or jury! Praise God for your love for Him. 1 cool nana
Powerful reflection, Melissa. Keep your pen at the ready. I have a thought that God's ink has only begun to pour.
peace~elaine
I remember the summer of 1994, my Chris and I had just moved to Little Rock and joined the choir before we joined the church. I was 23 and Chris, 24. We were asked to come and go with the youth group to help at Six Flags. I was so amazed. For only 6 months out of college, we found ourselves old and standing aside while the kids played and rode every ride. All of a sudden we were Mrs. Holly and Mr. Chris. No longer were we cool folks to the youth. We were "like old or something." In my heart, I rebelled. But then something changed. I gracefully walked out in my new role with joy at the passion I was seeing in the generation behind me (that would be yours, sweet Melissa).
What good words you write. May we always be fervent in heart and soul and body and spirit for the Living Lord Jesus, who is the Coolest!
Praying for some cool to come upon your fair city!
holly
That's a great testimony! Thank you for sharing it with us.
My son and his friends film themselves playing Christian rock and throwing a mosh pit party. I turn away :) Not in judgment, but with the calm assurance that the Holy Spirit lives in them and will certainly direct them in their generation. Okay- it scares me when they scream instead of sing but I won't go into that :)
"When everything inside me looks like everything I hate,
You are the hope I have for change,
You are the only chance I'll take.
'Cause I'm on fire when You're near me.
I'm on fire when You speak.
I'm on fire burning at these mysteries." Switchfoot song
May the peace of Christ dwell richly in our hearts today, sweet siestas!
Thank-you Melissa, for your timely message! I'm 52, could break a hip in a mosh pit...but I too have been one of those who was trying to figure out if "they" were really saved...because the music, clothes, hair etc. was different than mine.
Aren't we soooo glad that there IS NOT a cookie cutter mold to fit in?
Melana in Wyoming
Melissa,
Don't be too hard on yourself, you haven't reached frozen chosen status because you recognized it in it's early stages and stopped it. I too have to fight it, but teaching high school for 20 years has helped keep me young. Most of all I find that youth just want us older folks to be real and admit that we make mistakes too. They also like to know that we can learn something from them too.
In Christ,
Lisa
Amen, Amen and Amen!!! We need to do more joining together and less judging others! Thanks for the reminder.
You are do great Melissa!
Love,

Way to go Melissa - you spoke volumes to all of us who become so caught up in being "spiritual" that we don't see the beauty in coming to God as a child. Excellent words, you are your mother's daughter!
God is so good. All day long I have been thinking about how much I want to change. I am also "tired of being a person I don't want to be." I know that I can only be changed through Jesus and the power of the Holy Spirit. But sometimes it seems to be such a long process! Earlier I reminded myself that I will never be perfect --- there is only One - Amen? So I need to "press on towards the goal."
very wise!
Speak a word siesta!!! What an incredible testimony to the timelessness of our Lord! So glad His worship doesn't depend on our preferences!! Thank you so much for this!

Dearest Melissa,
You are so far ahead of of me and I am 51 years old! My younger 19 year old daughter reminds me just about every day to "step out of my box"! It is so wonderful how God reminds us that He just wants to be praised - in different ways! But isn't absolutely wonderful to know we have His forgiveness when we sit "frozen" in judgment of how others worship Him.
Thank you for being YOU! You are precious.
For 4 1/2 years I have attended a church much different than the one I grew up in (old church - very formal, almost archaic). It has been healing on so many levels, but I, too, find myself getting ready to sit in judgement on some things. I have to sit back, take a breath and think, "Does it really matter? Am I upset because of a preference or actual doctrine?" I always fall in the former category. But I am getting much better.
Oh how I, too, long to be fluid and not frozen!!
Hey Melissa!
Such a thought-provoking post:) I am with you, I'm not so sure I'd join the mosh pit, but I would cheer them on as long as no one got hurt! This is soo funny because it reminds me of when I was in youth-complete with "Jesus Freak" renditions and lights, you know, the whole thing! But, sometimes, our youth director would just play guitar and sing-I really enjoyed those times too. I've simmered down some since then, but occasionally when I get around my younger sister, I surprise myself at my "childishness"-extra: my sister who is 12 loves to sing "Jesus Freak" while she's listening to her i-pod, I have to smile at her, O the mentality!
Wouldn't you know they would speak on Esther! That is a Godstop and a half! "There it was: trans-generational truth. You see, she was still trying to emotionally recover from the almost too phenomenal realization that Jesus Christ can really change the jacked up person she knows she is in her heart." Wow, Melissa, right on:)
"Cheers to the only Wise God, the Lord Jesus Christ who gives us hope, and the Holy Spirit who empowers us!" Yeah! Melissa, you are so right! ((HUGS))to you:)
P.S. It's blazing here in K-town too, the heat wouldn't be that bad, it's the humidity, you walk outside and you sweat-walking to the car! Forget big hair, TN girls can't find enough hair spray to fix what happens when humidity takes over:) Sorry for the long post-I'll do better next time:)
Blessings to you:)

Well said!
On a funny note, I asked my daughter (just turned 17) what a mosh pit was. She giggled at me and then explained (with a bemused expression on her face) that a mosh pit was the area in front of a stage (the pit) at a concert etc. where people dance wildly, flail their arms, jump up and down, yell and scream, sing etc.
When I asked her why she was giggling she said, "Those are words you just never expect to hear come out of your mom's mouth". :)
Melissa, thanks for that post, I just moved here (Hotlanta) form Southern California. I came from one of those crazy next generation kind of churches. It was fabulous! We moved here for a job position and because God was clear it was the thing to do. But I sit in this mega church and do the same thing you did but opposite. I judge the people in there wondering why they are not jumping up and down. Don't they know the one they sing to... HE is the creator of the earth. The one who makes it spin and float. THanks for the honesty. I love it. whittakerwoman
I so admire your love and passion for Christ Melissa! As a young girl my self i hope i can mature into the passion for HIM that you have! your post speaks right to my heart girly! I love you and hope you and your man are well and God Bless!
Melissa,
We have been talking about this very thing in our Sunday school class recently. Our worship leader is in my class and he keeps asking the question why people in America seem to be so reserved in worship. I love that you recognized it happening in yourself. What makes us the frozen chosen and how do we bust out of that ice?
Blessings
Michelle
WOW WOW WOW!!!
That was just awesome Melissa...I'm blown away by what you described. You have encouraged me and inspired me and made me realize that I do not want to be the one with the arms crossed shaking my head at "them."
Keep on being kids crazy for Christ!
And, its hotter than hot in West TN too.
Hugs and blessings,
Fran
HEAVENS! How I can relate! We worship at a very loving but seriously 'un-contemporary' church. I find myself sizing up not the youth, but the elders at the church who are hymmin' and hawin' at us Gen X'ers.
The Ancient of Days brought a moment yesterday during our worship service that almost brought me to tears. A quite QUITE senior man was singing in the pew behind me 'The Wonderful Cross' and I kept thinking that his voice sounded so warm. So....everthing I want in an earthly grandfather. Anyway, our music director said, "We thought today would be a good day to learn a new song." And that wonderful man whispered behind me,"These are all new to me."
This man, worships with us every Sunday and loves the hymns (and the organ....wheez...). He feels like it is all changing so quickly and he's one I'd have called "Frozen Chosen." Sizing up the new. And there I sit, sizing up the old.
Thank you, Melissa. I needed the reminder. Christ is the one who makes all things new.
Girl I say get undignified and head to the mosh pit! LOL! This is such a true word! Thanks Melissa!! It is hot hot hot in Alabama. We skipped most of spring and headed straight for the 90's.
Melissa,
Life is so exciting when you have a teachable spirit! P.S. If you stop overnighting food to your loved ones-you could sleep with dry hair! I like your priorities-Love, Angela H
You're a WISE young lady and I know your Mom's proud of you. Melissa, you have spoken to quite a few of us "50-somethings" in this post and I, for one, thank you for putting this in perspective! I really don't want to be one of the "frozen chosen"!
As Amanda in SC said, "We need to do more joining together and less judging others!" I try to remember that we're not to judge a book by it's cover! (an old Mom saying!)
This blog is full of "Barnabas-like" women-so many encouragers! Thank you all.
Blessings!
wow...have you ever read something that you didn't even know you struggled with until you read it? ha. well that was me when i just read this blog. you hit the nail on the head, sister. you're great, keep doing what you're doing!

Melissa, thank you for being so honest with us.
I got zinged on that same front not too long ago, and the Lord brought to mind Rom 14:4 -- this is a paraphrase:
Who are you to judge Somebody Else's servant? To her own Master she will stand or fall...and stand she will, for the Lord is able to make her stand.
Briefly, it's His job, not mine, even "constructive criticism".
But He doesn't stop with analysis, He strenghtns and repairs. That's the part I'm most glad about when I am standing in the servant's shoes instead of in the judge's.
Let 'em gripe about me; He'll fix me till I'm all better and standing tall.
Thanks for your openness and your top-notch way of sharing and your commitment to Him.
That, my siesta, is a fresh word for us all! Thanks for sharing.
Blessings, Lori
Great post Melissa. It made me think of an event from our service yesterday. We baptized a young college student and the kids at the back of the auditorium were standing and cheering loudly. My husband was doing announcements right after and made the comment that it was the first standing ovation he had ever seen for a baptism. It was awesome! There were only a few frowns for the "undignified" response, but God was being praised and that's what counts.
Your post made me remember the good old days of FCA (Fellowship of Christian Athletes) conferences and funny, quirky songs! I love it! I miss it!
God is so much bigger than I give him credit for so often as I sit and ponder everyone else's motives- all the while steeping in my own negative brew! It can be so easy to get trapped into worrying what other's think because we know how messed up we think! I am so thankful that my Savior lives in me, there is hope!
gosh, Melissa... my ole gab is seldom left agape (and I mean this in the adjective, not the noun, form), but you've left me speechless here. what a sound word.

Melissa: Yes - we've had record heat here in Georgia, and yesterday it hit 100 here in the middle of the state.
Speaking of heat, your blog post had some heat too - my dear!
I was immediately reminded of my heart's judging attitude at church last month when a young woman got up from her seat and come to the altar during the choir special. (This was not in the bulletin, mind you.)
We were singing a GREAT song, "God is here, to heal the hopeless heart and bless the broken, oh come lay down the burdens you have carried, for God is here." Well - she took it literally and came to the altar.
At first, I thought, "what in the world is she doing?" Then - the Spirit fell and the Pastor didn't preach and folks were all over the place praying and making things right with each other, we had about 35 people get saved - including a couple of deacons, and it was GLORIOUS! No one left the service, it was awesome and the Prince of Peace was reigning supreme.
And in a Baptist Church!
Praise Be to Jesus!
Stay cool girl,
GEORGIA JAN
PS: Yes - the wet head in the bed works... :)
May we all keep our childlike hearts open to foolish and undignified enthusiasm and love for HIM!!!!! You're the best. Shalom
reminded me of a situation... a couple months ago I was driving down the road... I stopped at a light... in front of me a golden chevy truck with Praise the Lord in a "mexican style font", to the right of that truck was a silver SUV that had an black and white biker style decal that said Jesus freak! and when the light changed and the car next to me pulled up i realized the mini van to the right of me was sporting the Jesus fish, and there I am no decals no silver Jesus fish no loud expression except KSBJ on the radio... it was refreshing to know we are not alone. We are all different in how we praise him but his name shall be praised!! even if we have nothing in common except for the outpuring of love for our Jesus
Good words Melissa and good reminder for those of use who are WAY over 25 . . .
I love this post! I do sometimes wish my church would "wake up" on Sundays. My children however, keep me current, and humble. I love watching their enthusiasm for the Lord and we share a similar love in worship styles. Im often amazed at these young christians who dont seem to have the same hangups and issues we 50 somethings have had. My kids have no fear of sharing their testimony or singing solos in church even when they have never sung a solo before in their life. My son did this recently and when I asked him if he was nervous he replyed...why should I be nervous? The only one I care to please with this song is the Lord, and He loves me. Ok, so what do you say to that? He didnt even practice. He sang Beautiful Lord by Leeland. As he sang my husband leaned over to me and asked..is that our Hunter? We were so touched by his sweet spirit. He was definitly singing to His Savior.
Amen, sister!!
This is totally off the subject, but I was curious if you will be attending the Deeper Still event in Atlanta Melissa? I will be there along with four of my best buddies. We are so looking forward to it. We attended the one in Nashville and were blown away by the Spirit of God that changed our lives..He is so life changing and I can't wait to hear the word God has placed on the hearts of His three anointed.. I'm praying for a mighty outpour of His Spirit, and that the liberty bell rings louder than ever before...With much anticipation, Tina B.

cold, rain & wind at the beach.
The weather is one of the reasons Atlanta is called "Hotlanta". Even here up north in Rome, Ga we reached the high temp of 103. Is it really just June? God doesn't care what type of worship we do - what we wear to service (jeans or dresses) - whether we sing hymns with a choir or guitar - HE only cares that we worship HIM and HIM only!!! You are still young enough to jump in the mash pit - I, on the other hand, at 43, could do serious damage to my neck, back, etc... At my age, just rolling over in bed can be dangerous!! Thank goodness loving Christ doesn't have a requirement!
Melissa,
Thanks for your wise words. I love watching younger and older and people in my own peer group (that would be 42) love on Jesus. It so builds one's faith and love, too. I'm sure heaven will have a mosh pit - but, if I'm reading Revelations correctly we're going to have to squirm our way up front cause it's already inhabited by 24 elders. Oh, I can't wait....
Until then, loving each of you in Siestaville and praying we each have days of being knocked silly over how good Jesus is,
Warm in Alaska.
Oh yeah, Rome isn't far from Atlanta so if you want to send some food up here.... there are several Siestas here!!
Hey Melissa,
God shared a transitional truth with me yesterday as well. I was re-reading a book I read years ago. The book is the life and testament of Jim Elliot entitled, Shadow of the Almighty.
Elizabeth Elliott writes in the preface: "Those who want to know Him must walk the same path with Him. These are the "martyrs" in the Scriptural sense of the word, which means simply "witnesses" --to bear the stamp of Christ."
An excerpt from Jim's journal reads, "Father, make of me a crisis man. Bring those I contact to decision. Let me not be a milepost on a single road; make me a fork, that men must turn one way or another on facing Christ in me."
What a hero of the faith. If you have not read this or it has been a while the book is definitely worth your time.
Melissa, thank you for reminding me how easy it is to become one of the frozen and cynical who stand in judgement of others.
May each of us bear the stamp of Christ in our daily walk.
Hugs,
Mary
Melissa, I want to thank you for pointing out that wonderful Selah hymn "Before The Throne Of God On High." I have enjoyed it and a fresh look at my Great High Priest. I went out to find that CD and found instead a collection with four of their CDs.It's called "Timeless: The Selah Collection." After wearing the daylights out of your favorite song, I listened to the other discs. I found on disc 2 (titled "Press On") another very powerful hymn called "Wonderful, Merciful Savior" If you haven't already discovered this very fine hymn, I encourage you to do so. I love the way good lyrics and a special melody can lift me right into The Holies of Holies!
JoAnn Dorrepaal, Norfolk, VA
i so needed this right now! thank you for posting and sharing!!
Why not join the mosh pit physically while you still can. I was tiny so I would have killed myself. I was jumping up and down with the crowd at 25 at Creation Fest. I was pregnant and probably shouldn't have, but I couldn't help myself. Anyway, I love your heart and your openness. Don't ever forget that it is good to just have fun sometimes. Don't ever take yourself so seriously that you can't have fun.
Great perspective
I totally agree that as we get older we tend to look down our noses at the younger generation but honestly the more I am around them the more I realize they LOVE JESUS!!
They are so much more real and willing to give their all to God
I am inspired by them !!!
BTW: I am just a few hours south of Atlanta and it is SO HOT HERE
My oldest said to me the other day "mommy it is so HOT I can not breathe!"
Yes honey and it is only JUNE!!
God bless
Kim
Melissa,
Thanks for this encouraging post. I too worry about generations to come and the world we are leaving for our children. How encouraging to know God is raising up an entire new generation to follow HIM. I too have found myself in the seat of the scoffer, one I do not want to be in. Thanks for your transparency and honesty. Just be careful, or you may end up getting crushed in the mosh pit yourself. Just kidding.

Melissa,
What a great post! I'm definitely convicted of being a frozen chosen. Wow - I never really saw that sneaking up on me, but it has in a big way. Thanks for drawing my attention to it.
Oh Melissa - Thank you for this post...i'm 47 and i still am tired of being that person....i'm easily discouraged and sometimes think God should just give up on me...and then, i MARVEL at the sweetness - at the amazing, miraculous and marvelous thought that the God of Heaven would take the time to woo this woman back to Himself, time and time again, because of His Great Love for ~me~. It drives me to my knees everytime! Thank you for saying these things about our young people - I worked in our high school youth group at church for 6 years and I know exactly what you are saying about sitting in that judgement seat....I'm so thankful the Lord taught me to love them...love them...love them.
Your words are so needed as a reminder to us all to stay out of that seat...our human nature sure wants to crawl up in it from time to time though doesn't it??
By the way...welcome to the southeast honey!
Melissa you did not state whether or not the service was the morning service or evening service so I'm going to assume morning. Please forgive me if I have that wrong. I did very much enjoy your post!
I guess I'm a little different than everyone else that posted here. Humm...maybe at 38 I'm...I don't know. I don't even know if I should post what's going on in my heart because people may get upset. First...I don't care how big a service gets I believe my kids should attend worship with us. As a family. Second...worship God acceptably with reverance and awe. Maybe that's what a mosh pit does. I don't know. I know that God certainly did a great change in my life. With no mosh pit...or an organ for that matter.
I am really going to get critized for this...and be told I'm old fashioned...that I don't like change etc. etc. etc. but I'm just going to state this for my family and my family only: There is a time and place for "mosh pit" and a time and place for reverance and awe. For our family a mosh pit on Sunday morning is not reverance and awe. Now any other time...go for it. We are active with our 3 teenagers...we are youth leaders...we love them...love God's Word...and want them to grow in Him. It really makes me sad that people think because we don't do all the mosh pit stuff on Sunday morning that we aren't relevant. That we are relics.
My teens youth pastor...who loves this kind of stuff...is trying to teach the youth to live moment by moment in Christ, abiding in Him. Yet he struggles because the youth want "fun and energetic" all the time. If it's not...then they go to the bigger church down the road that has the big band...and does lots of fun stuff! Is that relevant? We feel we have to be entertained to worship the One True God? When did this become so much about how we want to worship and than how God wants us to worship Him?
Worship is bowing the heart...individually first. Then corporately. Is this how we teach them? I thank God this youth pastor, Jamie, taught TRUTH. I thank God this young woman LOVES Jesus! But when all this is stripped away...music, fun, energy...etc....can we still sing...can we still worship with reverance and awe? Is this teaching our youth to do that?
This is something I guess we will not agree on. But when we do disagree do we have to be labeled judgmental, critical and the such? I think having fun together...is wonderful. I think Jesus loves it when we do. I have no problems with mosh pits. I guess I just wonder is that ALL they are exposed to?
Please feel free not to post this...or to delete.
I do thank God for this ministry. I hope I have not hurt anyone's feelings. Last year...through the great grace and mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ...a friend gave me a book titled "Get out of that Pit"...and He delivered me from my pit. I don't think I had ever been out. I am grateful to God with how He has used you and how you have allowed Him to use you. I didn't even know I was in that awful pit until I read that book. And let me tell you...I am out..FOREVER! Praise my beloved LORD God!
They look different and they act different, but there are authentic lovers of Jesus amidst their generation. I love and appreciate their enthusiasm, but their authenticity is what draws me to them...they do not want anything fake. It is a beautiful thing!
I didn't come to Christ until the age of 28. I sometimes look at youth "in the mosh pit" and can't relate. However, I also wish so much that I knew Him at that young age - it is a little sad to me that I "missed the mosh". Now I have 3 children - the oldest is 12. And I must say - I would love to see Him in a "mosh" praising his Savior!
We are ALL guilty of trying to sit in that judgement seat.
I am so glad you shared this post, it is a great reminder for us all
Amen!!!
The older I get the more cynical I get and judegmental too. Why is it that we Christians who have been forgiven for so much tend to judge others so well and so often? UGH!
Next time I totally think you should jump in that mosh pit!
Oh, sweet Friend, I'm grateful for your word tonight. We'll start our summer studies tomorrow and I'm helping to facilitate Wising Up (6/12 sessions) I am reminded that He *hates* pride of any kind. My prayer is that I'll just be a vessel for His word to break into these women's lives - that no "freezing" will ever happen in my own life. But that I will always follow hard after Him, no matter what the cost. I am so delighted for the next generation to fall in love with Him. Let's all stand aside and let Jesus do His "thang!" love you!
I am reading "Do Hard Things" by Alex and Brett Harris before I pass it on to my 15 year old. It will challenge your expectations of young people and yourself!
Praying for the "frozen chosen" to have a softened heart that melts with His Grace. Thanks for a great Word!
Love,
Angie in hot-Michigan! :)
Ahh!! you have presented a great picture of modern tools to present ancient truths.
Thanks for sharing.

Melissa, thank you so much for sharing your blessed, teachable experience! Our youth also have a very similar type of worship service at our church. What a joy and blessing that we have a church big enough to hold approximately 250 in attendance! We all need to be led by the Holy Spirit when we witness or testify what we see, hear and how we respond. Be encourage, Melissa! God is not finished with us yet!!! Be especially in prayer for the youth workers, that they would be genuine , obediant, and submissive to the Spirit's leading as they work with the youth. God Bless and love you all!
I know how you felt! I was a chaperone at a Winter Jam event and was soooooo excited to see Mandisa perform...and then came Skillet. I don't know if any of you Siestas have heard their music, but let's just say it didn't speak to me. I am amazed at how God's Word can be conveyed sometimes. The kids from our youth group loved them and were on fire for God after listening to Skillet. I, on the other hand, was deaf.
Love from smoking hot Bama,
Lianne
P.S. Melissa--Any particular reason you dropped "Fitzpatrick" from your signature? I've been married 9 years on Thursday and still occasionally forget my married name! LOL
Amen Melissa. Thank you for being God's voice today.
It is soo easy to look at how other people worship and judge their hearts by their outward appearance. And so shameful since haven't we ALL (whether moshing, clapping or sitting quietly), at one time or another, come to worship with our hearts in the wrong place?
My dad never opened his mouth to sing a single word of a single song in church. He was the most reserved "worshipper" you could ever meet - but dear heavens he was excited about God!!
And, umm... maybe I shouldn't mention it was a lovely 65 degrees here yesterday? =)
What can I say.....I for sure will have to change my sign in name! :) Since soon I will no longer be a part of the frozen NE of a large Asian country, I was considering a name change anyway--just needed to figure out how to do that. Thanks Melissa for the great words! We've had a team of college students here and it's been great to see their passion for Christ and love for others. They've run my legs off but I've been so blessed by them! They're bearing fruit that will last!
Oh yes--I'm so glad others asked the question...what's a mosh pit?
I agree wholeheartedly with the Siesta that courageousy shared that she may be labeled "old fashioned" but preferred her family to worship together as a family on Sunday mornings.
Having my son & husband on either side of me each Sunday morning is precious time for us. My teenager and I BOTH love to "rock out" with Jesus from time to time, but he nor I would trade our traditional, conservative Southern Baptist Sunday worship together for anything.
There is "Mosh Pit" worship and there is more reverent worship. Both can be relevent. While we're one now, we may be the other later. And I believe either "side" at times looks in judgement on the other - both are guilty.
God's Word tells us to both respect the elderly and to encourage the youth. May we all treat each other with a balance of love & respect and give our youth both roots & wings in Jesus' name.
Sign me a... "Relevent Relic". :)
Blessings & Love~
Melissa, thanks for your post. I am the mother of three teenaged boys who like, I mean really like, their hair long, their black-metal band t-shirts, and really heavy metal music. Two of my boys are musicians...drums and electric guitar. They play music by other bands as well as their own...
Because of their appearance, they get a few "looks" that are perfectly reflective of what some are thinking.
However, I have never known or met any more godly, Word loving, faith-sharing, encouraging young men in all of my life. I know they are my sons (and I have a right to be a little biased) but I am serious...If only I had known guys like them when I was their age, I may have made wiser decisions in regard to boy-girl relationships.
An example from just last night...my middle son who is 16 next week, told me that he had broken up with his girlfriend because lust and tempting thoughts were becoming too frequent and he knew that did not please God. So he broke up with her so he could devoted his thought life to the LORD instead....WOW!!! I told him I was proud of his honesty and his wisdom to make a wise choice before his thought life led him to make reality decisions that could hurt his walk and possibly altar the path God has chosen for Him....I was just so impressed by his witness to me....
Thanks again for sharing...our youth need our love, acceptance, and approval...like the kind that Christ gives us...instead of our judgmental condemnation....
Wow... the frozen chosen. Help us, Lord!
Amen to the hotness of atlanta and DOUBLE AMEN to the meat of this post!
Have a great day...
steph.
Hey Melissa,
I am really "hating" you at the moment, you are young, beuatiful, intelligent, cook but what I "hate" most is that you can go to bed with your hair wet!
Mine would be a frizzy wave in the morning. I must shampoo, condition heavy, use leave in products, blow dry, one leave in product, flat iron, and one final wax to smooth the fly aways! Oh to go natural!
Mosh Pit, sounds interesting but I'm honest in saying although I think they should have their own time they need not be seperated from the rest of the body in Christ during worship. Have two worship times for them.
It's been hot and humid in Arkansas but yesterday we had rain and it cooled off but I'm betting humidity returns with a vengance today.
Let's all cheer for a lazy hazy summer, I'm hopint that's what it will be but looking at my calendar I dont' see that happening. Enjoy your new home, explore the great city
I have a teenage son, who is in the praise band at church. He is so laidback, even when he plays the guitar, I sometimes think, Can you just get into it a little more?
I guess what I'm trying to say is, I wish my son would join the Mosh Pit! There is not actually a mosh pit at our church but I want him to be excited and to know that Christ is real! Most kids think of God as far away. They don't quite "get it". And sometimes, they are there because of the fun. I think my son and my nephew went to church the other day to check out girls! But at least they are checking them out at church! I try not to worry to much, because my son and my nephew are great kids and often do the right thing. I remember as a youth, we went to church where the"older" people did not like us too much. We ended up leaving after about a year, and I quit going to church until I was saved as an adult. But in my heart, I could hear God talking to me, trying to get my attention. I have often wanted to contact the youth minister that we had back then and let him know, that what he tried to teach us, did stick! He and his wife worked so hard, and they loved us and taught us. But the church did not approve. They didn't like the NIV version of the Bible and they sure didn't like that we were listening to PETRA! I try to remember that even though I went astray for awhile, they had planted seeds in my life and after many years of God nurturing that seed, it began to sprout and I realized what I had been missing all those years. I pray that I will keep it real in my own life and that my kids will know He is real and that God is with them, not just up in the clouds somewhere. I pray that we will join the MOSH PIT and be excited about Him! Thank you so much for reminding me to let my youth, be his own person. Even if he not crazy like his Momma, and he's a little laidback, doesn't mean he doesn't "get it"!
Melissa, I continue to be impressed by your writing skills and your Christ-like wisdom. If it is God's will for you, I hope that He lead you to write your own book in the future.
What strikes me about this whole issue is that there needs to be a lot of grace in both directions. The younger, mosh pit crowd needs to respect and learn from the older generations, even if they don't think they are "cool" or "relevant." And the older generations need to engage with the younger ones and help them to understand why some, not all, traditions are worth keeping.
I hate to see centuries of the richness of church thrown out the window because its considered outdated. The church is supposed to be intergenerational, not the young mosh pit crowd over here, and the boring blue haired ladies over there. But the only way that is going to happen is if there if a great deal of grace going in BOTH directions.
This was awesome...as usual. Btw, I thought about you last night when I watched the the weatehr and our weatehr person talked about Hotlanta.:)
This cheered my soul to hear of these kids praising God on their own terms. That is so good!! I wish I'd been there! And I'm 52! Sometimes I get all "judgmenty" because the kids at our church won't let go and worship with abandon. In fact, most times I'm like that. (Forgive me Father!) I feel like we've put little harnesses on them and that disturbs me so deeply. And to hear this young woman tell how she can hardly contain herself - that is what I want for our kids. In fact, I'm going to read that to them tonight as they congregate at my house for our first high school girls night out. What perfect timing. Thank you Melissa.
Greetings from a Hotlanta Siesta!!! And our a/c is on the fritz, hahaha!
I took my teenage daughter and a friend to visit a new to us "mosh pit" youth group. I Struggled with the same feelings but the message was good. We go to one of the largest churches and the youth group has the dark "cool" place but it is ALWAYS salvation messages. I am all for saving the lost! But feed the sheep! (WHeres the meat?) Before the heat gets them!
Also at that group that we visited... there was a side wall towards the back that had couples putting hands all over each other! THe make-out wall I guess! My feelings shot out of control. "Where are the Adults??? Why aren't they doing something??" I couldn't focus on anything else...as a visitor that was fustrating.
Still looking for the right place for her to connect.
Sherry
Melissa, great word, i work with teens at my church (not my plan ALL GOD's), but let me tell you, I've fallen in love with them!! This ministered to me! Also, on the 'hot' bills issue, get a fan, not celiing we have those, but we bought a small fan and you don't know what difference that makes in the room pointed towards you when you're sleeping or working on the computer!
Melissa, I appreciate your thoughtfulness and had to read, digest and reread over a 24 hour period. One of the biggest challenges we can face as Christians is to move out of our own regular, comfortable zone of worship and try something different. I believe the Holy Spirit will illuminate or convict us through that experience.
Sunday I spent the morning at a church for the homeless. The congregation was asked who memorized a verse that week and who would be willing to share. My head immediately bobbed down in shame. Thankfully it didn't stay that way as I would have missed the 6 homeless souls who came forward to share, one fella tried 3x before he could get the entire Psalm out, what they had committed to memory that week. What a blessing to me personally and a challenge. While those men and women wander the streets with concerns including shelter, food, safety, hygiene, transportation, employment they manage to place God's word firmly in their hearts and mind. While my concerns pale, with a capital P, in comparison I could only recall a fraction of my Sunday School text for the children that morning.
Girls, follow Melissa's lead and look for something new and different and see how diverse the Body of Christ truly is and receive a glimpse of the unity of eternity for those who love and serve the the Son of Man.
Elizabeth
I rejoice with you over this young woman. May the Lord continue to pour out His Spirit in Hotlanta. May every generation, young and old alike, be filled with Him, so they can shine like a city on a hill.
Melissa,
I agree wholeheartedly with how you were feeling at the Mosh Pit. I would've shut down too.
I know I'm kind of going on a rant here, but I really feel that because our culture today is so accepting of so many things, I can't help but feel like it's really carrying over into the Chrisitian community as well.
It's all about "no judgement" and "do whatever you want" and everyone has to just be okay with it. I don't feel that's completely right.
I believe that God gave each of us a certain amount of discernment within us when it comes to these kinds of things.
If you didn't feel comfortable at the Mosh Pit, I don't feel that you needed to be chastising yourself about it.
That feeling may have been the Holy Spirit's discernment within you.
I agree that people have many different styles of worship, but what I don't agree with is that ALL of them are okay. I honestly feel like moshing is just another form of partying and just saying that we're "praisin' the Lord" to cover it up. To me, I don't find that style of worship to be respectful at all.
I feel that sometimes in certain situations people use that term to excuse everything they do.
It sounds like the rest of the evening was a nice time, though!
I agree with everything you were saying about Christ being the Ultimate Judge.
I'm also not just trying to pick on the youth of today, but rather just trying to make the point that I don't feel that it makes you a "Chosen Frozen" just because you don't feel totally comfortable in certain situations. I think it's good to have that level of discernment within us, and I don't believe that it necessarily makes us judgemental or critical of others. We don't have to be totally accepting of everything just to prove that we're not the "Chosen Frozen". Know what I mean?
I don't feel that you needed to feel bad about feeling the way you did in this case.
Love and God's Blessings,
Clarissa
Melissa...you are so wise and so right! I found myself looking at the youth in our church who didn't do worship the way I did and thought they were being irreverent.
So...I decided that I need to get back in touch with the youth. I started attending the youth service on Wednesday nights once a month. (I did this when my own kids were part of the youth group to stay up with what they were being taught.) Then I started volunteering to serve at youth functions. All I can say is WOW!! The enthusiasm and passion that these kids have for the Lord makes MY style of worship border on irreverent! They LOVE Jesus and what He has done in their lives. And they are not afraid to let others know it!
So..."judge not lest ye be judged" really hit home with me. I'm not saying that every church should have a "mosh pit," but we do need to be careful about being "frozen" to a spot where we fail to accept others because they look, act, worship differently than ourselves. Thanks for the reminder!
Jaye in MN
Amen, sister!
I'm 25, too, and I teach (now) junior girls in the youth at our church. They keep me young and help me to remember how desperately I was in need of my Savior when I found him at 14. They are not yet so tainted by the expectations of this world that they hesitate to dance - and even mosh - for them. What a breath of fresh air the generation right behind us is! :)
Glad God let you catch a glimpse....
Wow! I was JUST discussing this same thing with my girlfriend on Sunday over veggies & cheese. She attended the revival going on in Florida and had the same issues; and I went to ... well, church...my church no less. We talked about our need to press into God no matter what is going on around us. It's not always easy!
Thanks for the great post...what an encouragement!
I have been thinking about this post so much and have been reading about the life of Paul and his journey which has been so inspiring. I can find myself having a bitter heart toward God's people who grew up in a Christian home. One who knows the scripture front to back and is quick to give scriptural advice. I was born a Jew and a Gentile. Although I didn't know the difference and never knew about God. I didn't come to know Christ until the end of high school. My relationship is based on God's divine love and mercy. I came to know Christ by blind faith. I have such a love for Him because if it wasn't for Him coming at the exact time he came in my life I wouldn't be here today. Being in youth was difficult because the entire youth group was pastor's kids and youth pastor's and deacon's kids. I felt like an outcast and kids can be kids and say hurtful things. So for along time I felt that I wasn't good enough for his Love because I didn't know his WORD. Going to a church that pushes so much on being able to quote scripture was a struggle for me. They would ask how I came to know Him and I would tell them and they would question my salvation because I could not tell you anything about scripture. All I could tell you was that God spoke to me as if he was in the room that day and He said it was not my time to Go that he had bigger plans if I just be patient and trust. He said that he would never leave me. That he would be here yesterday, today, and tomorrow. (I was crying and I did open my eye and look around because I swore someone was there with me. But no one was there.)
Ephesians 3:14-19 comes to mind. This prayer speaks to me on so many levels and I am encouraged to go and spread the Good News.
P.S. Now years have passed and I no longer feel unworthy. I am encouraged by those who know him differently than I do and love learning his truth by reading and studying His word.

Wow, Melissa! Way to lay it out there! About 4 years ago, we left our church of over 15 years - so sad! But the church was filled with "frozen chosen" who couldn't see that Christ could be worshipped through contemporary music as well as traditional hymns. This church had such a unique way of presenting the gospel. A change in worship - or just an openness to accept the way others worship - could have opened the door for so many to hear the Truth. The "frozen chosen" still have not understood the impact they could have had for Christ's sake had they just thawed out enough to do a little something different now & then. Praise God for those who are willing to be different & just do what God puts on their hearts! And many prayers for those who allow 'traditions of men' to keep them frozen. Thanks for the wonderful post! Dawn in Chatt, TN
Amen & Amen! Mother of three! Age 20,18,14! My prayer is for them to be on fire for Jesus!
1 Peter 1:6-8
"In this you greatly rejoice, though now for a little while you may have had to suffer grief in all kind of trials. These have come so that your faith -- of greater worth than gold, which perishes even though refined by fire-- may be proven genuine and may result in praise, glory and honor when Jesus Christ is revealed. Though you have not seen him, you love him; and even though you do not see him now, you believe in him and are filled with an inexpressible and glorious joy"
I'm starting to the dread the term "Chosen Frozen", because everyone makes it sound so negative.
I must confess that I am one of the "Chosen Frozen" that is being spoken about. I come from a very reserved church background. It's taken me a while to get used to seeing people show outward displays of worship at different church events that I've gone to.
Today, the outward display doesn't bother me in the least (God has done some serious work in me about this over the past year or so!) but with that said, I find that I don't feel all that comfortable doing so myself during worship. I am a song leader, so I am up front at lot at church. There's this feeling in me that I don't want to draw attention to myself, because I know that if I did so at our church, that's exactly the kind of result I would get. Everyone would notice, and begin to wonder where that was coming from. I don't want that to be the focus. Does that make sense to anyone?
While I believe that most people feel that they're just answering the call to total abandonment in Christ, it's just not something I feel comfortable doing myself at this point. That's not to say that I'm not giving Christ full access to my heart. Maybe someday He'll want me to express myself in a more outward fashion, but right now I just don't feel that calling.
With that said, I'd like to point out that I don't believe that this makes me a passionless person who isn't excited about Christ. For this reason I find myself resenting the label of "Chosen Frozen", because I feel that it implies that we're unfeeling, unoving, unexpressive people, and that's just not true. I don't believe that Christ looks at us and says "it has to be all or nothing" in terms of our styles of worship. It doesn't have to be one extreme or the other.
It's not right for us to criticize people because they're not outwardly expressive in their style of worship, and vice versa. In previous years I have struggled with doubting the sincerity of those who show outward displays in worship, much to my own shame.
To the BeyondThisMoment girl, THANK YOU for what you said!! What you were saying about your Dad being really reserved (like mine is!) in church made total sense to me.
I think the natural tendency is to automatically think that reserved people are passionless or not excited enough about Christ, but I don't believe that that is an accurate assessment.
It's more about the condition of the heart than anything. And one other thing that I want to kind of point out.... all this talk about worshipping Christ on our OWN terms, isn't it more important to be focusing on worshipping Him on HIS terms??? What I mean is, I believe Christ is more touched by the sincerity of our hearts, and not so much the outward appearance of worship.
I think we all need to take our focus off of ourselves. We need to quit looking around at what everyone else is doing and just focus on worshipping the Lord in whatever appropriate style He's given us. Amen???
I also really appreciated what VillageSister had to say about worshipping side by side with your family (not in separate worship services), as well as some other anonymous people as well! I'm only 25, but I feel that I could call myself a "Relevant Relic" as well! I feel like I have an old soul compared to some others my age would would join in with mosh pits and stuff like that. It's just not my style, and I think that's fine.
All that aside, what really matters the most is that we worship the same Heavenly Father who loves ALL OF US!
Your Sister in Christ,
Clarissa Matson
melissa;
anyof us who have visited soemthing that is not our own church have fallen into the pit of judgement. i can only remember the first time i went to a youth service...very much like you expressed. my arms were folded and my heart was closed; until i heard the testimony of a changed heart. then i remembered that my fervent prayer for my own children is that they be further along in their faith than their broken, sinful mom. now, i too, rejoice when i see a crazy outburst for JESUS that is coupled with an awe and reverence for power, love, and transformation that is only HIS. i long for my heart to be abandoned to HIM and sometimes a good dose of freedom be it in the mosh pit or in room full of prayer warriors facedown before Him is a great thing.
Living in the river;
Jennifer
