Airmail from Atlanta
OK, Y'all. I'm not even kidding. A half hour ago I opened a box Melissa overnighted to me filled with home-made goodies. I'm not talking chocolate chip cookies here (but I do like those). I'm talking - are you ready for this? - Russian Tea Cakes, Seasoned Parmesan Cheese Sticks (FOR CRYING OUT LOUD!!!), and this thing she called an "Apple Crostata." (Different than that apple tart on her last blog. Did it come from one of your recipes or is she outsmarting us again??) Y'all, as I live and breathe, I have never had a more pleasant taste in my mouth - delicate, crusty, buttery, apple-y - than that darn thing. I stuck it the the oven per her instructions for 15 minutes to reheat it and it came out looking like a French chef's masterpiece. I took it downstairs to the staff (she sent it to work so it wouldn't sit all day on the front porch at home) and my LPM sisters and I lost our minds, it was so good. It honestly melted in our mouths with flavors so delicate you had to stand up to eat it. I could taste the slightest hint of orange in it. Don't know what that was. Orange I guess. (Laughing at my own self.) The Apple Crostata doesn't throw a party in your mouth like a kickin' salsa. It offered more of an afternoon tea with Princess Diana, God rest her soul. This is a dessert for the unhurried. For those with a discerning pallet. And mine discerned all right. Mine discerned, "DANG, CHILD! THAT IS ONE OF THE BEST THINGS I'VE EVER PUT IN MY MOUTH!"
(I just grabbed the dictionary to see if I spelled the right "pallet" that meant taste buds instead of a thing you take to mother's day out for your three year old. I didn't spell the right one but I can't find the right spelling to save my life. I found a word "pallette" but it means an armpit plate from a suit of armor. I sure am glad I didn't use that word because this post has nothing to do with armpits but it does have to do with plates and with food so good you could work up a sweat. I guess, then, you could use a discerning pallette to keep it covered. Hey, did you know that Paraclete is in the Webster's Dictionary? I just found it. WOW! Way to Go, Merriam!)
OK. That's all I wrote to say. I don't have time for blogging today. But sometimes matters of highest urgency arise and you just have to stop and post.
I hope if any of you Siestas are having a crumby day, it's coming from a home made Apple Crostata. I've gotta go wash my hands now. They're sticking to the keys. Apple. With a hint of orange.
PS. I'm going to wait just a tad longer to have Melissa deprogrammed from the cooking cult. She's still studying Scripture between oven buzzers best I can tell.

Okay!!! ALL Atlanta area siestas!!! We've got to pray Melissa will get her heart right and whip up a bunch of goodies, then we've got to find a meeting place and partake in the goodenss!! (Do you think Starbucks would think we were crazy if we brought our own dessert's?!!!)

Oh that we could just click on the words "Apple Crostata" and it would arrive directly on our tongues with it's apple-y, orange-y, crumbly goodness. You just be sure and tell all those LPMers that you're eating for all of Siestaville. In fact, since that's the case, you'd better have Melissa send more!
I don't think I have ever had that kind of manna shipped to me before. Good thing I just ate some divine cinnamon rolls or I would be getting hungry!
That is hilarious. Now I am going to have to Google to try to find a recipe for that....not sure I can wait until it "might" be posted....hint,hint...
I think we may have the same kind of sense of humor. A friend of mine and I share it, as well. You just can't turn two "almost" middle aged women lose by themselves, not even at Walmart... people stare, we are laughing so much...

OK, I'm just a bit jealous! Gettin' an overnight package of goodies...wow. I love cooking too and all this "talk" of cooking has got me just wanting to get in the kitchen and whip up something special!
Okay....of course you'd be expecting us to ask for the recipe. Come on...give it up!! You have us salivating and with no means to satisfy the craving. A picture would also be delightful!! (I always love picture based recipe books!!). P.S. "palate"...also refers to the hard and soft palate in your mouth.

By the way, Miss Beth, the word you wanted to use is spelled PALATE! :) According to dictionary.com it is from the Latin word palatum which means "roof of the mouth". Geez, that sounds pretty brainy & fancy for "taste buds" - yeah I'm from Texas too!

Having my staff hear me laughing out loud while sitting alone in my office makes them question my sanity. It did not help when I told them I was reading about "an armpit plate from a suit of armor". I tried to explain that it was a blog comment from one of the greatest women's bible study leaders on the planet. They just smiled and slowly nodded their heads while squinting their eyes.

*laugh* This is one of my all-time favorite entries. I'm making the tarte aux pommes* for a barbecue on Saturday and can't wait! I was giddy last night while buying the puff pastry, and I have a whole mess of apples from the farmer's market that need to be used. So exciting! If Melissa wouldn't mind sharing the latest recipe (also, the one for the Parmesan deliciousness)... I personally wouldn't mind :)
*I'm also a Texan, but I took seven years of French classes with strict professors who'd yell at you for throwing a twang into their pretty pronunciation!

OK...Now I'm hungry. I have the strongest urge to drive down to Kathleen's (the local tea room) and order a swanky dessert. Notice I said my urge was to "order" not "bake". I love to bake, actually, but don't have time to do the fancy stuff these days!
Also, I have to ask...Beth, what is a pallet - meaning "a thing you take to mother's day out for your three year old"? I think I missed out on that one when mine we're three.

I, on the other hand, walk by a cookie and gain weight! I've always considered myself a "Boticelli Beauty"...soft, round and dimply in all the right places, just like a cream puff. Maybe I was born 100 years too late! We "full-figured" gals were quite the fashion way back when.

Recently I have been re-organizing and simplifying alot of things and as I read your post about Melissa studying between baking...it got me to thinking.
I was wondering if you, Melissa, Amanda,(and any Siesta willing to share)could tell me how you plan out your usual day.
I am currently wearing many "hats" as a soccer mom, Girl Scout mom, Taxi driver, involved in Women's Ministry, etc... Oh, did I mention I homeschool? And, of course, I want to squeeze in exercise and a cup of coffee with a girlfriend now and then when I'm not planning meals or helping my husband! Basically, like every other woman who works inside or outside the home...I want to find a balance where my Quiet time doesn't get either "put on the back burner" or becomes part of the daily check list. I'm just looking for tips and ideas from other women on what their daily schedule is like. If anything, it might be encouraging just to know I am not alone in the "busyness" of daily "To Do's".
Just thought it might be fun to see "how" other Siestas get it all done with lipgloss still intact! HA HA

I know we'd have to print off the discussion questions for use for the next week and we wouldn't be on the same page as everyone as far as feedback goes, but we really are looking forward to it and want to participate.

I've come to realize that cooking is indeed a talent and a gift because I don't have it and no amount of trying is going to make me have that gift! (sigh...)

Thanks I needed to read this , I just got done writing a paper for schol . I could go for something sweet to eat too. had to chuckle about the cooking cult. I'm sure Her hubby doesn't mind being the taste tester for all of her recipes. I guess since the kids are home for the summer I can do all kinds of cookie recipes since they are eating six loaves a bread a week and I can't keep enough hot dogs and chili around. I'm new to the blog as far as posting goes, but have always been a siesta at heart. Just had to comment since I was reading this at lunch while eating a large slice of Baskin Robbins ice cream cake. The way I'm figuring by the time we get through the summer bible study (which I can't wait to start)and all those good recipes we'll be trying(not to mention the mexican recipe you shared at Thanksgiving that I've made at least a dozen times)I will definitely have to get bigger clothes for fall! Oh I am laughing so hard! Boy did I need that. I just looked up a recipe for apple crostatas because you have made them sound so delicious. I have one question for you. I have a 4 year old little girl. How do I get her to grow up to love to bake and send me goodies?
By the way I love russian tea cakes, and they are even better with one chocolate chip baked right on top. Ok I am headed to the bakery right quick. And I'm from Ohio! Bye!

I spent my first year of marriage perfecting cakes of various flavors. 7 years and many stubborn pounds later, I'm really wishing I'd FedEx'd them to my own mama. But I didn't. I ate them.

Oh Beth- you and I are so blessed - daughters who love to bake!! My daughter makes the most wonderful deserts. There's this chocolate molten lava thing (absolutely scrumptious) and those cheese cakes.... Just one of those blessings that come from having grown daughters who love to bake and then SHARE!!
Girl, I wouldn't have her deprogrammed from that cooking cult either if she was over-nighting me goodies like that! ....as long as she is still studying, of course. I think she needs to share all of her recipes so that we can taste too!

Oh, Miss Beth, you make me laugh. I needed to laugh, I think. My back hurts so bad that I can't even stand up straight right now. Or I couldn't when I was standing. Now I'm sitting, but I better start feeling better in a short while cause I'm supposed to go to worship team practice in a little over an hour. I may have to call my leader and tell him I can't do it, cause as if that's not enough I've got other physical problems right now that I don't want to talk about. I never knew going off of one antidepressant to go on another would be so hard! I expected to crash emotionally, which I haven't quite like I thought I would, but man it has messed up my whole body! They have to let the one drug get completely out of my system before they put me on the other one, which I get to start tonight. I'm counting down the hours cause my body is REALLY mad at me right now. Maybe if I can get to church without a wheelchair, I'll go!! Otherwise, forget it! I'm staying on my couch! But thanks for making me laugh. I wish I had some of those apple things though, although it probably wouldn't help my stomach much. I can't help thinking though, that poor Sabrina is missing out. That's not fair. She's gonna have to send some next week for her.

Well, I did not get the cooking gene and my mother didn't have it and I am sometimes sad but not alot.
This is going to sound downright awful, but my friend who is a fabulous cook had me do a recipe once and it was hard (for me) but it came out looking pretty good.
I put in on the table all pretty and guess what? They ate it. They ate it in like 10 minutes!
I don't get the Joy of Cooking. If I make something, I want someone to read it or look at it or something, but all that so they could eat it?
No, I don't get the cooking thing at all. I love the people who do and share, but I'll just stay happily in microwave land.

I wanted to submit a prayer request to your site but the prayer page wouldn't load for me. So, I am trying it here hoping others will pray.
My 13 year old sister Katelyn, normally a very happy-go-lucky-teen, is having a very difficult time right now. She is battling deep depression - that came out of nowhere. Recently she was crying to my Mom asking why she felt so "hollow" inside. We are beginning to fear if this gets any worse she may begin to contemplate suicide.
She loves Jesus desperately. And studies His Word on her own. She is truly reaching out to Him asking for help. Please join her cry and my own on her behalf.
We are praying my parents will take the right course of action in finding her the counselor she needs. The waiting lists to see a Christian Counselor where we live are sadly VERY LONG and finding one has been a struggle.
We are also praying that this depression would lift just as suddenly as it came.

ooooooooooooh, what a TREAT !!! Melissa, hats off to you....what a gem of a recipe you found. "Crostata di Mele" ("apple crostata") has been a staple of italian "rustic" cuisine for generations. I have very fond memories of walking with my grandma to the common oven of her mountain village to bake her batch of crostate for Easter Sunday or any other "special occasions" (only the very rich could afford having an oven at home - most families just had a cast iron stove)... I distinctly recall the gathering of old ladies, sitting around that public oven, waiting for their turn to bake their goodies, softly chitchatting in their tight, inscrutable dialect.

With this you would need a good 20oz cup of Kennedy Coffee here in Bentonville Arkansas. Their coffee sorry to say, well not really sorry is MUCH better than Starbucks. My friend and I call it the underrated Starbucks. Anyway if you find yourself in Wal-Mart country you will have to visit Kennedy Coffee. I will let you know what to order. :) Sorry Starbucks fans your coffee house is overrated. ;)

A crostata??? I had never heard of this and I am known to dabble in gourmet cooking (with a good healthy dose of Southern thrown in :)))) So I got on on-line and found tons of recipes for the said thing. I will making my first crostata this afternoon - a cherry crostata since I have cherries in the house. Melissa, you are truly an inspiration!

On a side note, responding to your post about "worry"...right now my little mother (almost 87) has 2 spinal fractures and in lots of pain. She has been admitted to the hospital and I'll be heading back up there shortly to stay all night with her..Please pray that all of us (family) will not "worry" as we have been doing so, but have peace....and we know that can only come from Jesus (and healing, too). He truly is in control of all things...we just hate to see her suffer...

I just fell off the diet wagon with this Apple Crostada! Used the recipe from Ina Garten on Food Network's website as suggested in a previous post - didn't have the orange zest, so substituted a quarter tsp of orange flavoring. (Had to get the same flavor you raved about!) My hubby had two slices and wanted a third! This reminds me of my mom's quick fruit pies she would make in the summer with fresh peaches. She would use a frozen pie crust on a cookie sheet and just wrap up the fruit and put the crumb topping on it and bake - She probably never knew she was making something as fancy sounding as a Crostada!!!!!! I have smiled over recent entries, because it was 25 years ago that my husband and I moved to Houston as newlyweds and bought our first house in First Colony in Sugar Land. I began to cook for the first time and was shipping Apricot Thumbprint Cookies to friends and family. Melissa, I also have a lasagne recipe that I began cooking my first year of marriage in Texas, and I continue to make for my family. We have 3 children now, and I must tell you too that our oldest son's' baby pictures look just like he could be Jackson's brother. He's 21 now and still very handsome. Melissa, hang in there. Atlanta grows on you. The sky in Georgia is big too. We attend Northpoint Community Church in Alpharetta where Andy Stanley is the minister, and it is a wonderful body of believers who are reaching the lost.

They specialize in teaching people how to mill wheat and make their own flour from whole grains. It is very easy and so, so good! I have been milling for my family for almost four years now. The health benefits have been incredible.

I'm smiling, b/c i am thinking if Melissa has taken to marriage in this robust & wonderful way, how in the world will she be when she has babies of her own? :) She will be a wonder to watch!
So happy for you, Beth...even though Melissa lives away, you can still feel very close through thoughtful things like this! :) (I will be sure to mention this thoughtful thing to my young daughters...gotta plant that seed now! :) )

My 8 year old daughter got saved this past week at Bible school. God is so good. I just wanted to share this with you; I knew you would all rejoice with me.

Hi! Just wanted to say that my sister and I are so excited about the Deeper Still conference in Atlanta. It will be the first time we've done something together (away from all the kids) since our first Mary Kay Convention years and years ago. We are looking forward to going together since one of Kay's studies was the first we did together and Beth, I can't tell you how God blesses me through each study I've done of yours. Our bible study is half way through Patriarchs right now (summer break) and I'm chompin' at the bit to get back to it. I have been so blessed to learn about Abraham, Issac and Jacob. God uses different teachers at different times in my life and he's been using you for several years now. I love your love for the Father and the way you show us your passion for The One and ONLY. You point us there each and every time you open your sweet southern mouth! Thanks for being a seeker and lover of Christ.

I just got home yesterday from a camping trip to Natchez state park and read this blog! wow does that sound good! Will she be feeding us when we come to Atlanta at the end of this month? If so I will bring my fat jeans!

Although this may be considered aiding and abetting the cooking cult I had to pass on this site that I "stumbled" on. www.tastespotting.com OH MY GOODNESS is it the "bomb"! I am totally in awe of the culinary masterpieces presented on this site and most are presented from the "Melissa's" of the world trying their hand at chefing!!! Praise God for your gift Melissa and your efforts. I am a recipe reader but not much of a doer. I am inspired by your zeal for trying things. It makes me want to try too!! Way to go girl...please check out the site, you do NOT want to miss it. I promise you will want to try EVERYTHING!!!
