The Sacred Recipe
NANNY’S CHICKEN AND DUMPLINGS
Gently boil five large chicken breasts with the skin on until cooked. Season the water lightly with salt and pepper. A bay leaf added to the water gives an even better flavor. Turn off the heat, remove the chicken breasts to cool but leave the broth in the pan. Draw out a cup of broth (making sure you get plenty of the fat in it for tender dumplings). After the cup of broth cools to lukewarm, pour it in a large mixing bowl and add three large eggs to it. Salt and pepper the mixture and then begin adding flour to it until it starts to get manageable. The consistency of the dumplings dough should be like bread dough: tender but neither sticky nor dry.
Bring the broth back to a gentle rolling boil. Roll out handfuls of dough to about a fourth inch thickness. Cut in strips of an inch or so wide and three or four inches long. Drop in boiling broth and stir gently to keep them from sticking on the bottom.
When all the dumplings are in the broth and cooked (only takes a few minutes), add one can of cream of chicken soup and about 1/4 can of cream of celery soup. Much of your salt will come from the soups so please don’t over salt your broth. Add pepper to taste.
Remove skin from cooling chicken, cut into chunks and add to the broth and dumplings. Stir and cook only a few more minutes. Overcooking will disintegrate the dumplings!
Serve and enjoy.

I hear the "HalleluYah Chorus" playing. 'So glad it's going to be cold this weekend in Colorado...I've got a recipe to try!!
Thanks for sharing.
Love you much,
Holly
Oh Amanda that recipe sounds so WONDERFUL...my children love chicken and dumplings. My recipe is different than this one..I am going to give yours a try.
Blessings to you,
Stacy
why is it that your grandmother is always the best cook? kind of like..anybody can make a peanut butter and jelly snadwhich, but it never taste as good as your moms :)
will God grant us kitchen grace when we are grandmothers if we STILL can't cook? i mean, like just MAKE it taste good so people think you have mad spatula (sp?) skills when really your lazer eye vision burns everything you loook at :D
(*mad=awesome)
ps...i totally agree with whomever suggested the LPM cookbook :) (NOT that i think you all are old grannys so you can cook good...) you just have your granny's recipes that make you cook good) *grin*
(shwooo...that was close)
Bless your heart for posting this. I can't wait to make them.
And really, there's nothing I like better than a dish where the recipe REQUIRES that I scoop out lots of chicken fat in the broth.
Makes me want to do a happy dance. :-)
Ah! She shared THE recipe! You go Amanda! hee hee A sweet southern pregnant girl horded this and was not ashamed!
Thank you for sharing this. One of my most favorite childhood memories is all the times I was allowed to drop my Mamaw's dumplings in the boiling broth and watch them puff up like little pillows! I regret to this day not being old enough to know to ask for the recipe.
Thank you so much for the recipe! One of my favorite foods! :) I hope you have an amzing time with your momma this next week! Praise the Lord they returned safely!!! P.S. althought that blog was awhile ago, but was just reminded how Ive always thought that you look like alexis Bledel and it's funny that your moms celebrity thing said that you looked like her...b/c you also so resemble your momma! :) Pretty, pretty ladies! :) Thanks for keeping up with this fun thing! You're great at it! One night with a king...good movie! Try the Love movies by Janette Oke as well...

Okay- as much as I don't want to admit this, here goes: I've never made Chicken and Dumplings (may God forgive me and may my grandmother from Colorado City Texas forgive me also), but..I want to learn. Help my unbelief!
I'm going to follow the recipe to the letter, because my husband loves C and D, so here goes! Thank you Amazing Amanda- What did you have to say to get that recipe? God has knit us sisters together this week- I can feel it also! Thanks for the recipe, let me know when the LPL cookbook comes out! You think Lifeway will want in on that one also? Love you all!
ok: there goes my strict diet. I'm going to try this TO-NI-GHT. Thank you for sharing this treasured recipe.... talk about a proper sisterhood! :) :) thank you!
PS I thoroughly second cookwannabe's suggestion of a cookbook!!
OH! I JUST have to *shout* : Isn't the Lord GOOD!!!!

Amanda - This recipe sounds delicious! Thanks for posting it. I'm definitely going to use it. This southern recipe compels me to share a fun fact you'll probably appreciate as a Texan. My great great uncle was a TX ranger and friends with Sam Houston. Doesn't that just beat all?! Love you, Girlfriend!

:) THE prized c&d recipe?! Sista's all over the planet are planning the weekend menu: chickens beware! Thanks for passing it on!
Yummy!! Thanks for the recipe. My son Jason thanks you! Have a blessed day sistas!
I have ALWAYS wanted to make c&d. Never had a good, tried and true recipe. Finally, I have one! I'll let you know how they turn out. My man is going to be SO happy!
Hugs,
Lisa in MI
Amanda,
I wish that my husband wasn't on such a stringent diet because I can't wait to try out this recipe. But I sure can't make it yet because that would be cruel. Maybe I'll make it for my daughter and her husband.
Thanks for getting it for us and so quickly!! Enjoy your time with your Mom.
Love, Su for CO
Can I just come over and have some, I am such a bad cook. These instructions make my eyes roll over and I know it will turn out nothing like the real thing. Sigh... A ability I have not cultivated yet, but it sure sounds yummmy!!
Good morning to you....all! (Idaho's version of Y'all)
Yesterday was my very first blogging experience and took an extra amount of talking to the computer screen......"I don't want to NAME MY blog....I just want to answer one!!!!" And somehow it worked!
I am thrilled to be able to converse with my sistas, and now recipes too.....There is a God in heaven, and He is smiling on us, I'm sure of it.
Thanks, Amanda for the wonderful recipe, and for keeping us all in touch.
My flip over calandar said: "We are not human beings having a spiritual experience. We are spiritual beings having a human experience." SO....all you spiritual beings, May the God of Peace direct your day through the human experience!!!!!

DRAWWWWWWW plenty of Fat... I hear these bad boys calling my name... and the Angels in Heaven sang....and I fell prostrate on the floor...
Amanda,,, "Give it to the pregnant lady".. no wonder.. you couldn't help yourself... your mother shouldn't have thrown such temptation in your way and expected anything less of you...
A person could hurt themselves.. maybe even kill themselves on these C&D's....
thank you for sharing what looks like an awesome family super secret recipe....
His beloved....
Connie
I have a dear friend that I used to teach with and she was always bringing me C & D's to take home to my family! They were homemade and I loved them. Never have seen them 'in a box'.....so I haven't made them, but I am going to give this a try! My 3 sons will be impressed if they taste as good as Sue's did! Thank you. Bible study, recipes, wow....you have it all. God Bless!
Y'all crack me UP. That sounds like a great recipe. Both my grandmothers were great cooks, and when they made chicken and dumplins they used their biscuit dough for the dumplings. Talk about "slap your mama" good!
I'm going to see how your recipe does with my granny's biscuits.
And there should DEFINITELY be place to swap recipes, but instead of a cookbook, a link from the blog page. (Amanda, you needed something else to do today!) We have a link on our family's Yahoo group site, and it works GREAT.
You girls have a BLESSED day!!!
Ok, I'm posting this but am very scared - I've NEVER eaten chicken and dumblings!!!! But I am going to try this tonight! Grew up in the military and the south never made our orders. So excited to hear about the trip. OH, and I love the LPM cookbook idea too! Wouldn't it be great to get the sistas around the world involved?!
much love to you all
wow...... this is a SERIOUS chicken & dumplin recipe. not one for the "microwave" generation, but the real thang!
THANKS!
ok so I can't belive I'm going to post this with my southern friends reading...I've NEVER eaten chicken and dumplings!!!! But I'll try this tonight! Grew up in the military but we never got stationed in the South. Sounds like I may have missed out on something =) OH, and I LOVE the idea of a LPM cookbook, or maybe call it a Sistas Cookbook! Something about getting sistas all around the world involved just excites me!! love to you all
Hi, I just found this blog but enjoy Beth's Bible Studies immensely -is there a video study with the new book "Get out of the Pit"?
Talking about grandmothers being great cooks, I have to share this my mil is very good at putting leftovers together and it tasting very good!
Her grandson was over just in time for lunch one day and so he sat down and was eating it and asked what it was? But before grandma could say anything he quickly stated 'or is it a grandma thing'? again? which he enjoys just as much as a real recipe. So, the big saying now is what's to eat? a grandma thing?
keep up the great work of the Lord's - Amanda & Beth
Lisa
Thank you Amanda for the recipe! It sounds delicious! This blog has been such a blessing in so many ways! My heart, soul, and stomach have all been blessed :)
Annie from TN
These look super yummy!!! I have never made real chicken and dumplings before - always with canned biscuit dough, and there was no "draw out plenty of fat" involved!! These just have to be good!!! My dear hubby will be impressed. :)
I too think the cookbook idea is a great one.
Thanks for sharing with us!! (and I don't mean just the recipe)
Love you -

Connie, that just "Cracks me up!!" as Chonda Pierce would say. Such good medicine, that laughter is...

Where did the word "dumplings" come from? Is it because you "dump" them in the pot in little pieces so they are dump-lings like " ducklings"?I know, I know, here is this nice receipe before me, and all I can think of is this. But hey, I was born blonde and now I buy it (lots to choose from), so you just have to go with whatever train of thought comes by at the moment.I am an Arkansan married to a Texan also so I think Beth can go with me on this with a little understanding. I do love the receipe- it invovles opening cans that make something taste like I cooked everything from scratch -- my kind of cooking!! Love this new blog Ithat I found too, I feel lifted up and praise on my tongue already!
Amanda, this is a fantastic recipe! I've been making chicken and dumplings for years because making dumplings was a simple way of getting my boys into the kitchen to help when they were 3-4 years old and very, very busy. (i.e. dumpling dough...play dough-very similar!) BUT this is the best...I support the cookbook proposal as well!
I love a great homecooked dumpling! Can't wait to try it out! Thanks so much for sharing your recipe! My two passions are cooking and Jesus so this has been a great entry for me!
Sweet Amanda,
This recipe sounds yummy :)
Thank you so much for sharing this with us.
Love,
Linda ~ Las Vegas
Yum...and so good to read about your mom's trip...glad she's home and was so incredibly blessed by it all.
A little secret, for those of us that are in the microwave generation... You can tear up flour tortillas and drop them in instead of the dough until they puff up. My mother-in-law made it like that once when she was being lazy (and she makes some awesome c&d) and no one in the family could tell the difference. She whispered the secret to me in the kitchen where her husband couldn't hear and said that she is going to make it like from now on since no one could tell!!!
oh beth- how sweet it is! the ups man just delivered Get Out of that Pit. i sat with my lunch and began to read. so glad i didn't skip the precious acknowledgments.do squeeze your girls for this thankful sista!
ok, i get to the forward by your man... whew! to God be the GLORY!
Phil 2:13 ah yah... isn't that the 4th time i've heard that this wk?! i have no doubt He'll show Himself completely thru that verse. that's how He tends to work with me. should be quite a ride! :)
now let's see...pg1.
i too, a former pit dweller-
He lifted me- lisa
You southern girls eat soooo good. Thank you for always being so generous to share your recipes with us Northerners.
I get to come to Bible Study Tuesday night, because I am home for spring break!! :)
I couldn't be happier!!!
Hope you all have a great weekend!!
Until Tuesday.....
Thank you for the recipe. I'm glad to know that one part of my interntional prayer time is over. Talk about time zone stress! While the Moore family was in Israel, my hubby left for China, so for a few days I just kept praying 24/7! Now my sweet husband is still 14 hours ahead of me time zone wise (its weird getting a text message from someone who is already a day ahead of you). I am sure he will appreciate some good "home-cooking" by the time he returns and the Chicken and Dumplings might be just the ticket!
UGH! Ok, so I just enjoyed this recipie but my dumplings were chewy and dense, not very flavorful. Nevering having had Chicken and dumplings I'm not sure if I did it right - any one? The "broth" and chicken were fantastic. Thanks!
Oh my these sure do sound good! I never thought of adding soup to the broth---what a great idea. I want to warn you though sisters, get all your dumplings cut into strips before you start adding any to the broth or the process gets a little crazy. My Grandma always said to never use anything but a wooden spoon to stir with (not really sure why, but she knew her stuff)and not to stir too much. Hope these tips help some of you first-timers and don't get disappointed if they are not perfect just keep trying. My first few attempts were so bad that the dumplin's were as tough as leather but with practice you get the hang of it. Or maybe it's just an unwritten law of nature that you have to be a certain age to make good C & D's.
I pray the Lord will bless all y'all and let you enjoy some good old southern food.
Thanks for sharing Nanny's recipe Amanda.
Amanda - I was telling mom how thankful I was that you posted this recipe - she laughed and said that she had the recipe all along - I could have just asked her for it! Ha! I laughed - I mean what would make me think that my mom had your mom's C&D recipe!
I'm relating to Laurel Wreath. I pretty much can't follow a snack-n-cake recipie.
Yall remember snack n cakes?
snack-n-cake...is that like shake-n-bake? i always loved those commercials cause that little girl was so country like me...
"it's shake-n-bake, and i HEEALPED" (not sure how you spell additional syllables, but i for sure know how to say them) :)
Oh Cheryl in Tx, I WISH I had read your helpful hint before my hands were covered in sticky dough (then I added more flour to the dough, of course it was over the sticky dough already adherred to my hands) as my husband came in from work and three of my kids ran in screaming and the gentle boil was beginning to rapid boil--all at once. NEXT time! I made this tonight and found that I was afraid of too much salt (so needed more) and it was a bit runny (used too much broth). IT WAS GOOD though, girls (practice will make this much betta).Praying , praying, praying for this weekend, Beth.
Love you gals!
Holly
From foodtimeline.org
Dumpling. A term of uncertain origin which first appeared in print at the beginning of the 17th century, athough the object it denotes--a small and usually globular mass of boiled or steamed dough--no doubt existed long before that. A dumpling is a food with few, indeed no, social pretentions, and of such simplicity that it may plausibly be supposed to have evoloved independently in the peasant cuisines of various parts of Europe and probably in other parts of the world too.
By the way, my dumplin's turned out gooood! Thanks for sharing your special recipe.
Just wanted to come here and invite y'all to peruse the blogs of some of us who are sharing our thoughts about Get Out of That Pit -

i just found a dog that would adore this c and d recipe! His name is Bugsy. He is a 1 1/2 year old Labradoodle who needs a home and would take kindly to an excellent live-in cook! He loves all Grandmothers' recipes! Please check out Noah's Ark Sanctuary com or dot com (talk about computer illiteracy) ...you can google it and look at the pet vet pet of the week! Some c&d lovin' sista needs this dog as much as this c&d lovin' labradoodle needs her...or him....whoever like to cook!!!! (so did i stay on-topic or what!)
Amanda,
Thanks for posting this. Believe it or not our church (we're a new start church) is going to have our first baby shower (for couples) immediately after church on Sunday. This precious mom-to-be and her husband have been trying and trying to have kids. So this is an extra special baby for all of us.
Now what could be more appropriate for a Sunday lunch (or do you say dinner in TX) baby shower, than Chicken and Dumplings.??? And don't worry, I'll make sure the mom-to-be gets the biggest mug.
Looking forward to Sunday,
~Cheryl
beth-finished "get out of that pit" laughed-underlined-cried-agreed-
laughed-underlined...enjoyed!
goodnight dear sista-lisa
Confession of a 52 year old! I have cooked and cooked, but I've never made chicken and dumplings. I love them, though. Funny story. German dumplings are the size of a softball with a core of buttered toast! When I married into a German family, the mother asked me before dinner how many dumplings I could eat. I thought, "Sound low!" so I said, "Oh, probably FIVE or SIX." I thought that sounded lovely, slender, and virtuous. Uh... not when they're the size of softballs.... Eeeeeek. They had a good laugh at me over that one.
Blessings.
Hi Amanda,
Sounds yummy! Chicken & dumplings is one of my husband's favorites and I can't wait to try this recipe! Thanks for sharing "The Sacred Recipe." You are wonderful and this blog is great! Have fun with your mom next week.
Love,
Dianne in Alabama
Hello, I am a first time commenter, and I just wanted to say that I was going to give the recipe a try!
Thanx...
This is very exciting! I only get chicken and dumplings at church family pot lucks. The one time I attempted it, it was chicken and dumpling. As in one. One big, fat dough-y dumplin. Maybe I'm ready to try again!
So glad Beth's back...I'm bringing a group to Bossier City, La. in a couple of weeks! We can't wait!
I am so excited that I can hardly type. Beth and Amanda let me share something God has done thru your blog. A couple of years ago God put on my heart to find a friend of mine that I went to high school with and I have tried for years with no luck at all. We were very close and this family was special and is special to me. During my high school years my parents got out of going to church but God blessed Denise and I with a wonderful friendship and I loved her family. They went to church and I went with them. They would go to different churches and sing and I would go along with them. They were a very talented family. Anyway, today I was reading the posts in here and read a comment by Dori, well, Denise had a niece named Dori and from Dori's post she lived in Nashville. I took a chance and wrote her and asked her if she was the Dori I knew and she wrote me back and she was!!! How cool is that!! God is good!! I am so overjoyed right now that I don't know what to do with myself. I know that God directs our steps and he used your blog to allow us to find each other again after 20 plus years. Thank you Amanda for starting this blog and go figure, Dori and I both facilitate Beth Moore Bible Studies. Beth, Dori and I will be at the Deeper Still conference, which begins on my birthday. God has truly delighted me BIG time. I can't wait to have a reunion with them!
Chicken and dumplings -- Now, that brings up sweet memories of my MeMaw. She made them for me all the time. My Mom, even today, will NOT eat C&Ds at all. Never has, never will. My MeMaw didn't leave a recipe for them and I was about 10 years old when she died, so I didn't know to ask for the recipe. Can't wait to try this recipe!! Thanks, Granny Beth!!
I made a big 'ol batch and brought it to lunch after our Tuesday morning Beth Moore bible study. It was a HUGE hit! The ladies all took a few spoonfuls (some more!) and thought it was great. It made a fun lunch for the ladies! THANKS for sharing it!
Please post some more wonderful recipes!!! Thank you so much. What a blessing!! :)
Dear Amanda, Post more recipes! Thanks....these were wonderful!
