Discuss Amongst Yourselves
My mom should be on her way to Bible study right now. She and Sabrina, our ministry director, are probably in the car together singing praise music at the top of their lungs. I'm in the same boat with some of you who live too far away from Houston - I SO WISH I COULD BE THERE!
Someone posed an interesting question today under the celebrity look-alike post. Which saints or fellow members of the body of Christ would you choose to "look like"?
I'll leave my answer in a comment and I'll look for yours there, too. Not that you were going to, but you can't say Beth!
Well, I'm off to the post office to mail out my son's first birthday party invitations (sniff, sniff).

83 Comments:
Jackson's birthday is mine, too (I'll be 36).
I'd say Corrie Ten Boom..she has inspired me to know God's Word (If someday, we were jailed for our faith and couldn't have His Word in hand...I'd want it in my heart and mind).
Blessings on Jackson's 1st birthday!

That is a hard one... will have to think about it.. Since we can't say Beth, can we say Beth's wardrobe!! (I have never seen anyone that ALWAYS looks like they walked out of an Anne Taylor catalog). I think Esther, she has so many AWESOME qualities... I can't wait until Beth finishes her study for next fall!! Well I have to go, I too am on my way to Bible study- wish ya'll were in Houston with us!! Come visit!
Love Jackie!!
By the way, enjoy the first bday party, I am planning my little girls 2nd bday party for next month!!
There is absolutely no doubt in my mind that I would want to look like my Grandma, Esther Poole. I can't remember a time in my life when I didn't look at her and see Jesus. She's the one who taught me Bible stories when I was little and for the longest time I just assumed that she had written the book of Esther. When I have grandchildren I want to be exactly like her. I want to teach my grandchildren about Jesus and I hope that one day they will see Him in me. Grandma is 83 years old now. She's in a nursing home in the last stages of Altzheimers. I stopped by and saw her today on my way home from work. Before long, she's going to be leaving some mighty big shoes to fill.
Dear Amanda,
As I answer your question...you have to hear about my thoughts for today. This morning as I was preparing breakfast, I began to imagine who I would most want to be like. The one person I visioned was Mary the mother of Jesus our Lord. For God chose Mary out of all the other women. What a woman Mary must have been. I can only imagine what a mom, wife,
daughter, sister, etc... and most of all her relationship with God. That is who I would want to be like.
God bless you.
Debby
I thought about this long and hard. I thought about David, paul or john. I think of all the teacher that has touched my life all the family and friends that I have been blessed with lifting me up to jesus when I was so running from him. If i had to pick a person it would be .... I would have to say Rae you don't know her but She is my mom's cousin she has teached me to not to love Jesus but to be in love with him. Not to just read God's word but to study it and use it in today's world. She has held me up many time when I couldn't. I believe that because of her faith that my life was changed. Cause I had no faith at times. isn't God good that he place's the right people in your life at the right time. I love him so much.

Happy Birthday to your little one!
You want to break out the tissues...My baby is going to be 13 on the 10th. I'm elated and deflated at the same time. Much more elated. She's a precious "Sister" and Daughter.
I have to come back later to say who I want to look like. Would you believe Corrie Ten Boom is the second person I thought of...the first one was Mother Teresa.
What a great question. It'll be fun to see all the anwers!
I would have to say my friend, Eileen. She loves God with EVERYTHING in her, she has the utmost respect and love for her husband and loves her children like no other mother I've seen. Both of her children are fervent for the Lord and she doesn't credit that to anything she's done (although she's been faithfully praying for them since they were tiny.) She credits Jesus and having a godly husband. Also, she is a VERY faithful friend. She NEVER walks out on a friend, even when a friend deserves to be walked out on. And she is a FANTASTIC mentor to younger women, like me. Plus, she walks by faith, not by fear. She has a deep relationship with Jesus like no one else I've ever known. Her godly wisdom is so ever present in her life. I know that if I have a question about being a wife, mom or friend she has an answer. And if she doesn't, she says "let's pray about that." She has a HUGE heart and is humble and a true servant of Jesus. She is beautiful inside and out. I LOVE HER!
If I have to say someone famous I'd say Anne Graham Lotz, Sheila Walsh, Barbra Johnson or Joni Erikson. All of these women have ment something different to me at different times in my life.
Happy Birthday to Jackson! He shares a birthday with my very long time friend since 5th grade. (We're both 34 now, so you can do the math)
Sing Beth Sing
Since we're "Discussing Amongst Ourselves"
What's in your CD Player? I have the Songs of Deliverance CD. My 6 year old only wants to hear track 3. We get in the car and she always says, "THREE"!!! My favorite is "FOUR".
Sorry for the sideline question.
Mother Teresa, because she never cared about what she looked like. All she cared about was to love and care for each person as if they were Jesus.
Mother Teresa was so beautiful, to have a compassionate heart and a Christ centered focused heart like hers, that's what I desire.
Happy 1st birthday Jackson!!!! Many blessings to you dear one. What a party you are gonna have!
I would like to look like a friend of mine Pat. She has been through some tough stuff in her life but always faces every challenge with faith in our Lord
First, I would like to say Happy Birthday to Jackson! I can't wait to see pictures from his birthday! (hint, hint) This is a good question. I would choose Esther. I just taught this book to my Sunday School class. I admire her faith and courage to put her people ahead of her comfort! I know she was scared but she put her life on the line to save a nation! I think for me the contentment in life would be to know that I walked in the destiny or calling that God had for me, whether that was something small or huge like Esther. I can't wait to get to Heaven and ask her a ton of questions!
As for the Houston Bible Study, I was thinking of them today and was wishing I could be there with them. It is a long way from Tennessee. I am thinking of flying to Houston to attend one night of Bible Study before it ends. Anyway, I hope everyone has a blessed and exciting night and please post what Beth taught on!
I did the celebrity look alike thing and I look like Catherine Deneuve (I so do NOT!!!) but my husband looked like Florence Henderson!!!!!!! I can't wait for the day to be transformed into the image of my Savior!!!! Until that time I want to look like exactly who God made me. The world gives us such baloney about what we should look like. More than anything I want to pass on to my daughters there is no beauty like beauty that comes from within a heart that is sold out to the Lord. The most beautiful women I know are ones who radiate the joy of the Lord. That includes Beth! Amanda, enjoy every minute with Jackson it goes by so fast. But it just gets better and better!

The Little Flower - Mother Teresa. She was so tiny in stature but a giant in faith, boldness and vision for the least that walk the earth. She was and is one of the greatest role models for me of those that have lived during my time. I started reading about her and her life in my early twenties. She can take something that seems so complicated and make it simple, the name of the first book I read on her was The Simple Path and I have gone back and read it many more times. She loved Jesus with all of her heart even when it was hard. She gave me one of my favorite quotes outside of scripture, "...to smile at Jesus when He can be so demanding is very beautiful."
Oh, there are so many!! I would love it if my "spiritual snapshot" would in any small way resemble Elisabeth Elliot.
What a thought-provoking question. :)
Happy Birthday Jackson!
(And welcome to bloggyville, Beth and Amanda!)
I'm officially on a blogging break (Shhhh!)but am down with a sore throat, sooo, I snuck over to BooMama's and wound up here.
Just wanted to welcome you to the blogging world, and say that the Lord is really using blogs to minister to women. It's incredible! You're definitely onto a great thing.
As for who I'd want to look like in the body of Christ, my choice would definitely be ANYONE with a flat stomach. *smirk*
I was going to say Corrie Ten Boom--since it's taken I will say--hmm...this is hard...I would love to be a little more like Joyce Meyer! She is so 'tell it like it is'!
Love the 'blob'
I think I would chose the woman who poured the perfume on Jesus feet. I don't know what it is, I just feel like out of anyone in the bible that her heart was just so beautiful, and so humble. Most people may say I am crazy on this point, but think about it. She poured out her confessions with perfume, A secret between her and Jesus. Others knew her story, but Jesus knew the story but included what He could see in her heart.
I would love to look like Kathy Troccoli. I've always wanted to be tall. (I am short and round...kind of like the Pillbury doughboy with a wig on.) Kathy is a beautiful woman with a heart for Christ and what a a voice! She likes to have fun. Everytime my friends and I have seen her perform, we come away having laughed, cried and deeply blessed by her love for Christ. She speaks to us honestly of some rough times she has experienced and gives God the glory for His tender care through each one. Her love for Christ is plain for all to see. Her love for Him is her greatest asset.
We love you Kathy!
Happy Birthday Jackson!
Some of us were in Birmingham last year with your mom just a week after his birth.
I would like to be a morph of Charles Spurgeon's lofty thoughts, CS Lewis' command of words, and Alistair Begg's brilliance and cool accent. I'm just afraid if I looked like all of them I would have really bad hair...:))
Lisa
http://www.thepreacherswife.wordpress.com
Do you mean LITERALLY look like??
I ask, because I am a caucasian female...but this week I have spent a lot of time wanting to "look like" Coach Tony Dungy! Seriously, go check out the very cool picture of him on my blog...the picture was taken right after he coached the Colts to victory in the Super Bowl!!
I have no intention of trying to alter my hair or make-up to physically look a THING like Coach Dungy. But, I pray that my walk and talk would be as deliberate...that others would look at me and see a living ministry...and that I would take advantage of any and EVERY opportunity God gives me to give all glory to my Lord, Jesus Christ!!

I have two. First,I would say Paul although most would say I am more like a Peter. They say I am a provoker---in a good way. Next, I would say Amy Carmichael. She had spiritual guts! Something that I pray people will say about me one day. If you know her story you know people would have called her a "Paulina". Yes, a female Paul. So I guess when I walk into heaven I want God to say welcome home Paulina. :) I'll bet He is smiling right now. Sometimes I know I give him a real laugh
Well, I would say Paul, Peter and John (the Beloved) Through Beth's studies I fell in love with Paul and John...
And Peter.. I have so much in common with Him.. I love him so!!! He finished well!! (I would love to see a study on Peter)
I could go on and on with the reasons why I chose them, but I will save room in the blog for others...
And I guess it is ok that I picked all men.. since one of my pictures I transfered listed 4 men that look like me :)
God Bless, Kim
Isn't that first birthday event such a huge landmark? My son is now about 16 1/2 months and I swear I just blinked!
Hope the Bible study goes well!
Hands down...four women who are faithful to participate in our Tuesday night studies who are currently battling cancer (3 of them for the second time). The grace and purity of heart they exhibit in this season of their "flesh" speaks witness to our Father's glory that far exceeds eloquent speech and lofty ideals. I love them for being real and for allowing the rest of us to be a part of their sacrificial praise. So for Marilyn, Beth, Maxine, and Carol...you are the saints I thank God for this day.
peace~elaine
I guess I would say that I would like most to look like a woman at my church named Susan Moffitt. She sings on the praise team and the countenance on her face when she sings is amazing. It's like she is singing straight up into heaven.
But I must admit, Beth is my first pick and I'm not brown-nosing either. If I could be anyone else in the world it would be Beth.
Mine would be... Esther... "If I perish, I perish" words that I live by for our Precious Jesus.
Something special about those sweet Jackson's.. I have a grandson just shy of 1. His name is Jackson...
Blessings.

Holly,
I would also choose Corrie ten Boom. What an inspirtation her life was to me as a young adult. I named my second daughter after her.

What a joy to read through these! I loved hearing familiar names like Mother Teresa and Corrie Ten Boom as well as the names of women who are famous to the Lord. Elaine, I got such a lump in my throat reading about the 4 women in your group with cancer - Marilyn, Beth, Maxine, and Carol. May God show His awesome might on their behalf!
Mine is a tie. One is definitely Corrie Ten Boom (please RUN to your bookstore and get The Hiding Place if you've never read it). She was a woman who believed God! And the other one is Jean Elliott. I think I will wait and tell you her story in a post.
Absolutely I would want to look like my friend, Nancy, who lives with Jesus in heaven now. She battled metatstatic breast cancer and started her eternal life with Him at the age of 46. Nancy taught me so much...what true joy is, how to be in love with Jesus and not afraid to show it, and as strange as this may sound Nancy taught me how to die. I can only hope that I will exhibit some of her "teachings" throughout my life.
Happy Birthday to Jackson! That first birthday is such a milestone. He is blessed to have you as his mommy, Amamda.
Interesting question. After I started thinking about that, I realized that the fellow members of the body of Christ that I would choose to "look like" would be those that I could certainly say I would not have wanted their life. I want the final product that produces the saint, and not the refining that is required to get there. I know that sounds sad, but I am just being honest. Think about it, Mary who sat at the feet of Jesus, Sojourner Truth, Harriet Tubman, Elizabeth Elliot, Corrie Ten Boom, to name a few. Because life crushed them, God was able to be seen clearly through them.
I think I would choose to be like my mother, who was a wonderful influence in my life and a woman who followed after God.
Happy Birthday Jackson! You're just a cutie pie!!!
Wow - I didn't know you really meant look like in a sprititual kind of way. I was thinking one of those models that "turned" to the Lord mgiht be nice. hee hee
Or what about Kirk Cameron's wife.
But since most everyone's answers were very spiriutal - and that is fine and good - I woudl have to say Cheri Keaggy. I just spent some time with her recently at a retreat and she is gorgeous. But when you close your eyes and concentrate on her worship to the Lord It is even more beautiful! Wow - what a woman of GOd!
Hey - I sure wish comment sections had spell check - i am sure you wish i had it too!

One of my very favorite saints is Elisabeth Elliott. I've always thought of her as a 'grandmother' in the faith. Of course, there's no relation...but as I've read many of her books, I said to myself over and over again, "That's the attitude I want to have...I want her passion for Jesus...I want to know the Lord as she does and even better." It's wonderful to have saints to look up to and immulate.

Oh! I can't believe I forgot about Kay Arthur, Jennifer Rothschild and Kathy Traccoli. I want to know God's word the way that Kay does. I want to know God intimantly the way the Jennifer does and I want to know God joyfully the way Kathy does. All of these women also believe God and have a deep relationship with Him. How can you choose? But like I said, Eileen would be who I would most want to look like. She's just like a big sister to me. I forgot to mention that in my first post about this.
love you all.
I want to know who would Beth most want to look like in the body of Christ
Wow..what a list I would have. How blessed I am by the women of faith the Lord has placed in my life to encourage and teach me. As a 22 year old, my 3 best friends range from 40 -65. They are my 3 angels--every one of them possessing the unique and beautiful attributes of God.
After recently attending my first women of faith conference, I was blown away by the testimony and eloquence that I saw in Sheila Walsh. She is gifted, articulate, and deeply passionate about our Redeemer and Best Friend. What a genuine and compassionate woman to run the race with. How blessed my generation is to be led by such warriors in the good fight.
Thanks to you all for your daily encouragement! How beautiful to know that each of us is a piece of God's image and when we walk in the Spirit, God is most glorified and wholly magnified through His very own daughters!
Wow! What a thought provoking question! And I thought my 2 year old threw out some tough questions! This really has me thinking!
I just recently heard Beth speak on Mary and Martha, so Mary immediately comes to mind. Oh, how I aspire to be like Mary! However, I am so Martha that it hurts! It's just part of being southern...we show love through "doing"...I'd be right alongside her cooking and cleaning and fussing! I would have spent the entire week prior to Jesus's visit immersed in Southern Living finding the BEST menu, spent a day at the spa, and of course, gone shopping for the perfect outfit to look my best, instead of studying my Bible and being STILL long enough to hear HIS voice and just worship him. (Mind you, I would be jammin' out to my praise cd's on my way to all my stops!) I could go on & on...my point is hopefully...prayerfully, one day, I will "look" like Mary.
In this generation, I'd say anyone who gives to help others....James and Betty Robison pop in my mind. Missionaries pop in my mind. My local christian area relief organization pops in my mind. Teaching our 2 year old to be a GIVER to those in need would be one of my most prized accomplishments.
Much love!

You don't know her, but her name is Mary Louise S____. She was my Sunday School teacher from the 7th until the 11th grade. At that point, she was just a sweet lady with silver-and-gold hair who loved the Lord and loved us, the Senior High girls' class. NOW, she means a whole lots more to me, but I've spoken with her less. We now have something in common - we've both buried a child after a long illness - it's been twenty years for her and almost two for me, and she's the one I look at to know that I will survive - only because of the power of Christ in me - but I'll survive, and Mary Louise reminds me that I can walk this path and raise my other boys with grace and love and passion for my Lord.
And, ya'll - she'd die if she knew that I wrote that.
Luke 2:36-38.
I don't know if I would want to BE Anna (the prophetess) cause I don't know that much about who she was. However, I love what it says about her in v.37 "She never left the temple but worshiped night and day, fasting and praying"
Oh to be known as someone who never leaves the temple--I don't mean literally one that stays in your church BUILDING--but one that always has the mind-set of praying and worshiping to the Lord 24/7. What a precious gift to know that we can talk to Him whenever we want. The God of the universe calls us FRIEND!!! How different we would view everything if we did it all for the glory of God!! (Colossians 3:17)
BETH...... Okay tonight at Bible study we learned about calling our relationships by the right name.. we have friends, acquaintances, mentors, counselors, etc. SOOOO.... what do we call all these crazy ladies that have become an "online family"? They are a new sort of relationship. God was all over everything you taught tonight, Beth. He was so present and there (and I agree that last song needs to be a new theme song- it was AWESOME!!)
Love ya to pieces and cover you with prayer daily!!
-Jackie
HMMMMM....
I know this is kind of different. We all have those we look up to (like Beth) but I am going to say my kids. A few months ago I walked into a gas station being robbed. My kids were in the car (something I'd never doen before) and I was just going to run it lay the money down and leave,(the pumps and the store are super close). The bad guys tried to get my keys, but with the grace of God they did not. When it was over I got in the car and I was a wreck, crying, having a panic attack, I really could not calm down. Well my kids (who are 5 and 7) Just start to pray. My son said "Dear God help mommy be okay and let them catch the bad guys, my daughter said "Dear God thank you for our mommy. On the spot I was okay. So to have faith like a child is where it is at for me.

Mine would be Marge Caldwell. I knew her when I was a little girl and she was something else. Her smile and sweet spirit touched so many lives. She's the kind of person that makes you smile just to think about her.
thinking about this question after class tonight i can only want to be a friend to someone the same way Susan is a friend to Beth.
For me, it is a tough decision between Ruth (her faithfulness to Naomi is just awe inspiring) and my "spiritual auntie" Sarah B. She has meant so much to me over the past 14 years. She's been the momma to me that my own momma wouldn't be, she didn't reject me when my own mother did....she's loved me through thick and thin, and has shown me Jesus in a very real way and shown me in a practical way how to live Christ out in my daily walk.
Blessings!

PS Princess Beth and Princess Amanda, this evening we watched the video for session 4 for Living Beyond Yourself, and the princess and knight story was so sweet! Thank you so much for sharing where our spiritual heritage really is, and that I AM a princess! I left our study tonight feeling so "royal". Thanks!
i've only met her briefly, but i want to be spunky, beautiful, and genuine like my sweet friend nancy mattingly. what an amazing mom, true friend, and passionate believer she is!
I pray I can learn to have the heart and mind of my most precious and dear friend, Kathy Jean. ;) After going through one of life's unimaginable evils, I watched as the Lord brought her back to her feet and restored her completely. She had her heart ripped in two, twisted around a bit, chewed on, and spit back out--but never once did I see her doubt the Lord's sovereignty, faithfulness, and promise to finish the good work that He has begun in us! She has the sweetest most genuine spirit, and my heart just aches with love for her. I pray to one day be as disciplined and love my Bible the way that she does. She gives me Godly, honest encouragment and and never fails to point me to the One who has broken our chains and set us FREE!! She is my 'Jesus with skin on'.
I would have to say a dear sweet lady from my chruch Corrine Craig. She is such awesome women of god. If I could be half the person she is it would be wonderful.
I can still feel God talking and working on me from tonights lesson with Beth, girl you really hit home with me tongiht. Thank you for all you do.
love your friend,
ashley <3
Well of everything I read from and about Elisabeth Elliot, I think she is someone I would LOVE to be like. Someone who has overcome so much of the flesh, for the sake of the cross.
Of people I know, I'm blessed to be surrounded by so many wonderful women. But I think my Grandma was probably the greatest example to me of a godly woman. Putting the needs of her family before her own, always supporting her husband (a pastor), loving on just about everyone she had ever met. I never knew how strong and amazing she really was, because she was always so busy making others look good around her.
I have one of her Bibles with her notes and questions in it. It is one of my greatest treasures.
Wow, Amanda - thanks for the invitation to consider those we'd like to resemble. Like many of us out there in "Evangelical World" I didn't know much about those in God's Great Big Family Tree who hearken from other streams. But a number of years ago I was so inspired and challenged when I first came across the writings and life story of Jeanne Guyon, a Catholic living in France in the late 1600's. Guyon's fasicnation with the beauty of Jesus and her insights into prayer have been very impacting in my life.
Also, a little closer, timewise, to us would be Therese of Lisieux, a young Catholic nun who died at the age of 24 in 1897 from TB. Again, her depth of walk with Jesus was amazing. She lived such a simple life of devotion, but her insights into the Word and the Person of Jesus are inspiring. In her short life she learned how to gaze at the beauty of her Beloved.
Don't you just love how many brothers and sisters are in this family of ours?? Heaven is going to be a hoot!
Wow, what a great question I would have to say Tammy Trent, I am amazed at her strength, and I love her hair.
Amanda:
I have thought long and hard about who I'd want to look like, and can't come up with a name. My hesitation comes from knowing that most "great saints" are refined by difficult trials and seasons that go unmentioned, but would bring most of us to our knees. I always ask myself, before praying to be "like" someone else, if I could stand under the thorns/sifting that they've stood under to receive the grace they've been given. To have the faith of "so & so" would mean going through the same faith-building process.
In short, we never know the dark nights of someone else's soul, because the Lord always uses them for Glory alone.........
ps: If Beth is hooked on blogs, what can we do to sway her to podcasts as well? :)
Ruth! Her devotion to Naomi is incredible...and her courage to believe God.
Cathy
What a great question, Amanda! I really want to look like Jesus! The Holy Spirit often prompts me...are you looking like ME? Especially when talking to my children, loving my husband, serving my neighbors, etc. I (along with Jackson) will reach a birthday milestone (not 1!!) this month and I have really been reflecting with the Lord on how much (or how little) I look like Jesus! Oh, to be mistaken for Him!! What grace He gives much messes to even be able to ATTEMPT to look like Him by His Spirit! I so love Him! Thank you Beth for being used by the Lord to ignite that fire in so many!! HAPPY BIRTHDAY, Jackson!! May he grow to be a mighty warrior for Jesus!!
What an interesting question - and difficult for me. This morning I have been contemplating the WONDERFUL stories of God's people in the Bible. I feel we overlook them in their familiarity. I'd love to be like Moses and see the wonders of God every day. Then again, maybe Joseph and have an overflow of forgiveness. But what about Daniel and his life of integrity. Or the Apostle John filled with love. Esther with her listening heart, humility and courage. Peter who didn't let mistakes keep him from Christian leadership. Paul - talk about a turn around! I want it all! And in the end, no matter who is our role model, don't we all want to be a reflection of Christ? Shine on, Body of Christ!
Gail Finney.. a lady at our church (she has since moved) who I just wanted to be near because her joy and love for Jesus would just rub off on you...Her worship and prayers reflected her deep deep relationship with Christ...I have since lost touch with her but I will never forget her!

It is amazing how much perspective changes on the saying "time flies" once you have children!
This is really tough for me. My Granny Edmonds was an incredibly Godly woman who was a prayer warrior. She even led a prison Bible Study in her 80s!! I have also always admired the story of Ruth in the Bible AND the missionary story of Amy Carmichael. Oh, and I guess I should add Joni Erickson Tada. Sorry, guys, I guess I am not very good at choosing favorites :).
Wow, I really had to think about that, but the one person I came up with was Mary of Magdeline.
A woman I can identify because of my past, but yet a woman strong enough to walk away from everything to minister to her Lord and Savior. A very close second would be Ruth!

Happy Birthday Jackson!!
If I picked someone from the Bible, it would have to be Rahab. She had the faith that GOD could love and accept even her, when no one else would. And, if it was someone from today, I would have to say Ms CeCe Winans! She just radiates GOD's beauty and holiness!
WOW! And she can sing!!!
Holly
I had a sweet older mentor woman who is dancing with Jesus right now, Gladys. I would love to be and look lik her. She radiated Jesus from deep within her.
Happy Birthday to your son. My oldest is becoming a teenager here in a couple of week and that has been hard for me to swallow.
Happy, Happy Birthday to Jackson!
I would be a combination of ladies,... I would want the grace & dignity of Ruth Graham, the voice of Christy Nockels, the knowledge of Kay Arthur, and the speaking ability of Anne Graham Lotz. Oh, and I would want to be a prayer warrior like MaryAnn Bridgwater. WOW!
Blessings, Sandy

This could take on so many different paths lol.
If I was to choose someone that modeled Jesus in everyday life, that showed me hope very early on it would be my Pastors wife, who grabbed ahold of my hand one day, and told me not to give up because she wouldn't because Jesus wouldn't. I want to model that as well, and just continue to learn from her.
Wow! I have GOT to stop reading these at work! It's hard to hide the sniffs and tears! These were all awesome answers. I agree with all of them. Since we can't say Beth (not fair!) I would like to add Karen Kingsbury. She is one of my favorite Christian authors and her writings really speak to me. I would love to write like she does and have the Christian testimony that she does. I visit her website too and she deeply touches many with her writing. Of course if God gave me that ability, I'd have to do something with it, hmmmmmmm....
Happy Birthday Jackson!!

Happy Birthday, Jackson!!! Savor every precious moment because they literally fly by. Now as to who I would like to look like--well that is a very hard question but I think my answer has to be Mary Magdalene. She looked one way before Christ and then looked another way after Christ. I want to be entirely different to what I once was. Does that make sense. I have known Godly women who have completely changed looks once they came to know Jesus personally--one such person is my precious "daughter-in-love" Barbara
I'm "lovin' on you with a sweet comment"--as instructed to do so by BooMama. This blog is super great!
love,
Sunni
Happy Birthday Jackson!!!
I almost can't remember my kids 1st's. The youngest is 17 now.
As for who I want to "look like"...
My first thought was one of the women of the Bible...Esther, Ruth or Mary. As much as I admire these women and many other contemporary Christian women, what I really want is to look like the best version of myself that can only come from surrendering my life to the Lord. I want to stand before His throne and know that my life was everything that He had intended for me and that I didn't miss out because of fear, disobedience or apathy.
It would be my mother in law, Sarah. She has exemplified God's grace and beauty throughout the 20 plus years I have known her. She is not only physically beautiful, but her heart and spirit shine through in spite of many struggles and battles throughout her life. She has loved me and encouraged me in the Word of God. She loves her husband and children and is a pure model of Titus 2. She adopted my husband at birth when she was still pregnant with her own child. She is truly a woman of grace!
I think I would have to say Carrie McDonnal. Her faith in her Jesus is amazing. It makes me cry to think of her devotion to Him. It's like Beth says about her teacher who has gone on - "I want that." Carrie I know is praying for the families of the missionaries from GA who lost their lives in a car wreak today - I was so thankful it was "just" a wreak and not an attack. Carrie is an amazing lady whom I love dearly.
Happy Birthday to Jackson on his first Birthday!! Fun stuff. Love you, Vicki
amanda, the sweet grandmas at my baby shower in 1991 were right "enjoy your children, time goes by so fast." our daughter is 15 and taller than me now. our youngest of 4 is eight. we don't have the tiny hand prints around the house anymore. we're looking at cleats, basketballs and high school formals. what makes time look even faster is i met my husband of 17yrs when i was 15. so enjoy!

WYou know what?!! The funniest thing just happened! I looked at your staff web page and saw my picture....well, not really, it was Linda, your accountant. She and I could be sisters (well we are in Christ, anyway). That was just another one that I "look like."

What great answers everyone has given. Many of whom I would have to "ditto"! There are so many great women of faith past and present that I would love to look like inside and out.
I think the person I would most like to be like on the inside spiritually is my four year old daughter. She has been through the worst of circumstances. She does not even have the ability to truly express what is going on in her mind, but when things are at their worst she keeps repeating "I NEED MY GOD!" She knows that He can take care of those things that are the most scary, and He is the giver of all good things. When she talks about family, she always tells people of "my God" and "my Jesus". She is constantly "reading" her Bible or asking that it be read to her. The child like faith that she has is what I desire most. Complete faith in the unseen without a doubt that He will take care of it all. She is amazing!
I would like to be known as someone who was like David. That when it is all said and done that people would say that I was a woman after God's own heart. I have done "A Heart Like His" 3 times and the 90 days with David journal. I can relate so much to him (is why I have loved the study so much)...his heights and depths with the LORD. We all have blown it in so many ways but God has been so rich in mercy to us. If He kept a record of sins who could stand....but with Him there is forgiveness therefore He is feared! Just like the 5 pounds none of us have gone to far that God isn't further still in His forgiveness and mercy to the repentant. That is why I love David so much...he blew it a lot but he was one passionate man for God!

I'm sure this is cheating, but every time I am asked this question, I can't think of one human I want to be like. Humans are too imperfect, and I am already imperfect. There are several people I admire...but I just want to look like Jesus. Several months ago I posted about why here.
I don't know that I could choose any ONE person -
my good friend in real life - Karon - who has recently been through her 3rd battle with breast cancer. We've shared some really warped laughs about THAT together yet her faith in Christ has always been an inspiration to me. I wrote more about her on my "pink ribbon" page on my blog.
Someone in our own time - Mother Angelica. What a spunky woman with such a passion and heart for Christ. Her recently released biography was a great read.
Someone from the past - Saint Catherine of Sienna. She lived both a contemplative life - in solitude, devotion and adoration of the Lord and also an active life in which she boldly pursued peace among rival families and within the church. That is where my heart is.
Great question Amanda,
I was just looking at a website yesterday at the church I will be visiting in South Africa this summer and I read a story about a young woman named Nadia. She works for The People's Crafts to help support her family who hav just recieved their first home courtesy of another mission team. She SHINES Jesus in the pictures I've seen. She was the first member of the church plant there to be baptized. I just looked at her and thought I've never seen anyone more beautiful. In a way that transcends the outside, she glows with Jesus. Hard to explain that, but I know you all know what I mean. It is extraordinary, and I can't wait to meet her. I just know I have sisters in Africa. Just like I found sisters in Mexico last year. God is magnificent.
I keep thinking about this, and as much as I admire so many of the women listed here and the strong women who have come alongside me during my walk, I don't know that I want to "look like" them. I don't know what they had to go through to "look" like they do. I am learning to accept the way that God created me and the plans He has for my life. So while I will keep my looks, and hope that others see Jesus in me, I do love to sit under the traching and the wisdom of these women and sisters in Christ and learn from them as they share how they got that look.
I am going to say Esther Burroughs! She has been to my church twice to speak and I will never forget Christ's presence in her. She is the most precious woman I have ever met and pray that I reflect Christ like she does.
Amanda, maybe you can get a b-day picture with Curtis and Jackson...that might work!
I had to think about my answer to this question for several hours before coming up with a good answer ...
In all truth and honesty, before my salvation in 2003, there were only three women in the whole world as I knew it then, who had a kind of authentic love that caused me to seek out whatever it was that they "had". Of course, I found out that it wasn't a "what" at all, but a "whom" = Christ Jesus! They are: Amy Grant, Susan O'Donnell, and Beth Moore. (Sorry, Amanda, I just can't help it!)
Amy Grant writes most of her own music, and her songs have touched my heart for years. I even got to meet her one time (very briefly, mind you), and her sincere love for Christ is very real. Susan is a wonderful prayer warrior, and is so Spirit filled that it just flows out through her work. [Those of you of know who Susan is will understand what I'm saying very easily.] And, as for Beth, the Holy Spirit just shines Christ's unconditional love to "individuals" through her writing and speaking, (even though I was only one lady in a crowd of 3,000 or more ladies when I heard her speak at Bible study in Houston before God led me back to Wisconsin.) And yet, Beth managed to help me realize that even someone like me could fall in love with His Word if I dared to try to study it.
If I were to choose someone from the Bible, I think it would be the Apostle John.
Another person I would want to be like would be Sheila Walsh. Through reading her books listening to her songs recently, she appears to be very authentic, although I've never met her.
And, most importantly of all, I don't think that any of these ladies want to be "well known". They all just want to share the love of Christ with people.
Now I'm just madly in love with Jesus, and hold onto Him for dear life through all of the difficult times that I have had to deal with recently. And I want to learn as much as I possibly can about my sweet Lord and Savior. But, most recently, I've gotten to know Him as my good Shepherd. =)
Happy Birthday, Jackson!

Wow, what at tough decision! I don't know if I could pick just one. I think I would like to be as courageous as Esther, as faithful as David, and as loving and committed as the Proverbs 31 woman (she is after all my bloggy namesake.) I want to be a woman after God's own heart.
What a great question! I'd have to say that it's a toss up between Edith Schaeffer or Corrie ten Boom.
If someone ever said they saw in me any of the graciousness of Ruth Graham or the enthusiasm for God that Beth has, those would be the huge compliments for me.
Oh, and if they said I sang like Babie Mason, that would be cool too. :)
Happy B-day little Jackson! (My "baby" just turned 14!!)
Ok, you girls have listed some really great spiritual heroes, but I can't believe no one has said DEBORAH!
Now THERE'S a gal I'd like to look like: smart, tough, strong, and courageous. And the only female judge....
Elisabeth Elliot. My 9 year old agrees: She saw her picture online after we had talked about all God had done in her life. She looked at me and said, "When I get old I want to be that beautiful. You can see tat she loves Jesus by all the smile lines on her face." I'm with her, I want Him to show through when I am old.
