Life Before Noon

Wake up at 6:25 a.m. to my son telling me he's "scared," AKA ready to get up. Nudge his daddy to spring into action.

Alarm goes off at 6:45. Go for a run. Realize I don't feel very good. Walk home.

Make toast for the kids and me. Appreciate that Annabeth can feed herself.

Have "quiet" time. Hide in dining room for a few minutes to pray.

Kiss Curtis goodbye. Thankful that Jackson doesn't cry today.

Repeatedly send Jackson in the backyard to play. He's operating at a 10 out of 10.

Put Annabeth down for a nap. Try to keep the house quiet.

Realize I either forgot to moderate blog comments yesterday or a bunch just suddenly appeared in the moderating queue. Yikes.

Comments from last summer and fall keep showing back up. Weird.

Annabeth wakes up happy.

Get the urge for Papa John's pizza. Order the $10 large, any toppings pizza.

Twenty minutes later it shows up.

Drop the pizza and watch Canadian bacon and pineapple spill all over the entry way and splatter on the delivery man.

Despite my protests, he generously leaves to get us another one.

Sit on the couch and wonder if that really happened. Embarrassed. Frustrated.

Yell at Jackson for climbing on me. Receive imaginary bad mom of the day award. Apologize to my boy.

New pizza arrives. Give a good tip.

Jackson says, "I want to share with my pizza. With Annabeth. That's what Jesus likes."

Wonder if that's a ploy not to have to eat. He eats all his pizza. He meant it. Sweet boy.

Encourage Annabeth to walk toward Jackson. She claps her hands, calls him "Dat dat" for the first time, and takes a few steps toward her brother.

Heart is happy.

Kids get a bath. In the chaos afterward, Annabeth dumps out the wipes. Towel falls into the water. Jackson sucks toothpaste out of tube.

Annabeth takes 9 steps toward her brother. A new record.

She hits her mouth on her rocking chair. Cries.

Naptime #2.

Try to read Where the Wild Things Are to Jackson before his rest time. He says it's too long. Not gonna argue with that. Pick a shorter book.

Bribe him with candy if he'll sleep today. Probably should be ashamed but I'm desperate for the stillness.

Quiet now.

And all is well in the Jones home.

Amanda!
Your post brought smiles, nods of my head and tremendous understanding. Thanks for sharing. It comforts the rest of us in the season of life with little nuggets! I have 2 boys who are 3 and 5. The adventures keep coming and advancing. Hope your quiet time is long enough for you to recharge. Keep sharing your blessings! Susan from Minnesota

I stayed home with each of my three kids...and have so many memories of days just like those. I know your mom has told you to treasure each and everyday...even ones like today. My oldest just got his license last week, my little girl with bows in her hair will be 13 in two months and my baby was 10 this past August. The days go by too quickly. Thanks for putting a smile on my face today.

WOW, all that before noon? Yikes. Your son gets up a lot earlier than mine. I hope he goes to bed earlier, too - for your sake. 12 or 13 hours a day with mine is enough. I love him to pieces, but by bedtime I am ready for a little space!

Sorry about your pizza and glad that your delivery guy was so gracious. Have a great afternoon!

condense most of those child moments into 2 hours (my 2 hours comes after I get home from work) and we are living a VERY similar life!

my 4yo is starting to not want to be alone at all because he is "scared". I am really praying this a phase.

You dear girl! Having been a nanny to hoards of kids for 10 years, but never a mother myself I still think I can relate just a little bit. In fact, I'm having a day like that one myself. Lots of highs, lots of lows and the day is dragging.
Keep your chin up. We all have our off days, and this too shall pass.
Enjoy the little things and get lots of rest tonight.
Thanks for sharing your life and making me smile :) It's VERY appreciated.
Blessings

So nice to know I'm not the only with days like that! Only difference is I have 2 boys, one is 16 and one is 4 . . .I never knew that a 16 year old and 4 year old could be so similar in temperaments, attitudes, independence, etc. Most days I just laugh because it's all I have the energy to do! Hang in there!

Your day reminds me of a Baby Blues comic that I had hanging on my fridge for awhile. The mom misses baby when she's sleeping and misses quiet when she's awake.

Our lives are a mix of that, aren't they? The good with the bad. The sharing and precious baby steps with the mess and grumpiness (and bad mommy awards -- I deserve those some days for sure!).

Hope your quiet time refreshes you. :)

Hey Amanda,

I worked in the kitchen for a summer daycare program. One day, I was carrying the tray for the two-yr-olds - baked potatoes, carefully peeled and quartered with all the amenities. Yep, dropped the whole thing. Pieces of potato, butter, salt, pepper and artificially-flavored bacon bits all over the floor.

The teacher just looked at me and said, "I can't believe you did that!" I'll spare you the comments of the cook who had to peel and quarter more baked potatoes.

I hope you have a good rest of the day!

I had to laugh "with you" at the bath-time fiasco. How is it that so much can happen in such a short timespan? I've never been able to figure it out! I read a quote somewhere that said, "If evolution really works, then why do mothers have only two hands?" Oh to have 3 or 4 hands sure would make our lives easier!

I'm so glad you don't take yourself too seriously and can share about a day full of ups and downs! Thank you!

Oh man, it's one thing after another, isn't it? I poured a can of mandarin oranges directly in the garbage can this morning while I was trying to get breakfast together, start our crockpot dinner, dress everybody like cowboys for preschool, and answer my daughter's question. I'm not sure what I thought I was doing with the oranges - they were supposed to go in the crockpot. Sigh. But it's naptime now and I'm enjoying the quiet.

Been there and done that!!! Don't let anyone ever tell you that being a Mom is not hard work - it's the hardest and takes the most organization and patience of any job I can imagine. My kids are now 22 and 21 (they were 14 months apart). Let me tell you something that should make you smile: They do grow up into responsible young adults one day (keep pulling out this note off and on for the next 20 years) and they do ADORE their Mom for what she gave them - herself.

You know, when I start to feel sorry for myself because I've always wanted to be a wife/mother/SAHM and I'm none of those--then I read posts like this and realize that I don't have the energy to be any of the things I've dreamed of being!! So perhaps the Almighty Sovereign God of ours does know what He's doing (of course He does, I'm just saying sometimes it makes more sense to me than others!)

All that to say is thanks for the reminder that the "grass is not always greener". Hang in there. Daddy should be home soon!

And no bad mom awards allowed, though there's nothing like motherhood to bring out the flesh. Some days I think, "Did that really come out of my mouth? Did I really say that to my precious three year old?" Thank you, Jesus, for not leaving us to ourselves!

Hope you have a restful nap time, have some space for an extra cup of coffee or breath of fresh air.

Dear Amanda,

Your precious story brought back so many memories. I remember many years ago when I was the young Mother of 4 children under the age of 5 and I was invited out to attend a MOPS gathering at Church. I was thrilled and prepared all week to go. What would I wear? How should I fix my hair? I never went anywhere! Well the awaited day came and I put each of my children in the Daycare room and proceeded to the Moms meeting. I found an empty seat and was handed a paper to fill out. It had 10 questions on it like what is your favorite color? favorite food? I stared at that paper and after 15 minutes it was still blank! I couldn't answer a single question!
Three more babies came and 17 years have passed since that moment. I can tell you that those were the most precious times when the world seemed small..the needs were constant...and love happened..it is the time when the bonds are cemented and the rest of the world seems far away...hold these moments close..it is where love happens..

Well as long as it's the day for imaginary awards then I hereby deem you the Most Darling Mom of the Day. Felt like I was reading a page out of my own journal in your post today -- my one year old thinks sucking toothpaste out of the tube is almost as fun as standing on top of the dining room table :)

Love that you apologized to Jackson. Just the other day my four year old told her daddy when he got home "Mommy shouted her voice a little at me but it was an accident and she's sorry." Nice to know we always get a "do-over" the next day in this world of raising little peeps.

May tomorrow start a little later with a great run, a quiet house with quiet time, a happy heart, and sweet sweet moments with your lambs.

You're doing beautifully. Praying for you!

Your post brought back a flood of memories when I was parenting my daughter and son, who are now 18 and 16. Hang in there all you young moms - and don't let guilt get you down. Just love your children and make the most of each day - taking it as it comes your way. I'm not a perfect mom and my children are not perfect either - but they've grown into two of the most awesome young people I know who love God and others, and have shown themselves to be responsible and caring individuals. All the work of parenting (which includes mistakes along the way) does pay off.

For some reason this conjured up a distinct memory: Me at Sam's with my three kiddos ages 3 and under practically ramming shopping carts with my friend that had four girls ages 3 and under (yes, it can be done, though few would recommend it). We just stood there a few seconds wondering if the other one looked like we felt. Then without any preamble she blurted, "I hate 7pm!" I just threw my head back and cackled :) She had verbalized in-a-nutshell my exact feelings. You know: the day's winding down, dinner is over (though probably not the dishes), and you're staring baths and bedtime in the face. And she even had an extra head to lather, rinse, repeat. Somehow that next 7pm didn't seem so bleak knowing another mom out there wanted desperately to love and appreciate the most exhausting days of her life.
God Bless!

Amanda,
You are a wonderful mom...pizza, toothpaste and all. I had twin boys and it was hard getting a nap, unless I had them next to each other in a car seat and pretended to be asleep on the couch myself. When they got bigger, it was almost impossible.
One night I was so tired I accidently ( and I do mean accidently) picked up the wrong baby bottle filled with ivory liquid in one of those plastic bags they have for the bottles. Luckily, my son would not drink it.
I just wanted to cry and felt terrible. Thank God it watches over us overtime.
My boys are bigger now__we made it through with God's help. My husband is a great helper too.
Hope you have wonderful week.

My memory goes back to a time when I was dealing with both of mine in diapers, and there seemed to be a day when I was changing the worst baby diaper blowout of my life in the hallway, in order to keep an eye on the two year old in the bathroom, only to look up and see a puddle of poo running down his little legs while both of them screamed. And the phone rang, I threw it across the room, and as I was just getting both of them into the bath to clean them, my doorbell rang.

It's not always that kind of chaos, but Oh the memories... LOL

LOL .... can appreciate the bribe for a nap thing. I'm hopeful beyond hope that my almost 3yr old will even go down for a nap today - gramma desperately needs a nap but......naps are hit and miss at this age. Wonder if I can get away with shutting all the doors, putting the gate up and snoozing on the couch if she doesn't decide to nap .......naw, that won't work. Isn't life just glorious.

I so know how you are feeling. Tomorrow will be two weeks when my day was going kind of like yours....get up at 6:00, shower, coffee, get kids up, fix breakfast, daughter (12) forgets that she forgot something at school the day before that she needed signed and turned in that day, son (4) whining about his clothes for that day, finally I say, pick out your own clothes, snacks fixed, out the door to get daughter to school by 7:45am, then son to preschool and me to work. Later, pick up son from preschool and here's the clincher, on the way to pick up daughter from school, hubby calls.....I've been let go from my job!!!!! WHAT?!?!?!, he repeats....tears start falling and all I could say is "what are we going to do"? Hang up phone and immediately start praying to my heavenly Father and bawling my eyes while trying to drive.....pick up daughter and needless to say our evening was not very good. Hoping your day gets better. God Bless

It made me tearfully happy to read this. I had an aunt who never had children. When I was in your stage of life she asked, "WHAT do you do all day?" I looked at her w/ my mouth gaping open, totally speechless - of course I could not think of one thing.
This is a beautiful tribute to motherhood!
And I believe the great Sunday school jingles we learn as kids are made for times like a dropped pizza. "The joooy-oyyy-oooy of the Lord is my strength!" CLAP! CLAP! CLAP!!

Feel better soon, sweet Sister! I am a stay-at-home/homeschooling mom currently to one while expecting my second (they are 10 years apart...does God have a sense of humor or WHAT?! :) and have so many days like this lately. You see, I was to have my gallbladder removed only to find out 15 minutes before surgery - I was in bed with IV and prepared to be taken back to surgery - that I was pregnant. JUST pregnant. This leaves me with a non-working gallbladder with severe symptoms day in and day out. It really wears on me. But today it did my heart good to take my son to PE class and visit with a new friend for well over and hour, then take my kiddo and his friend out to lunch and to the park for another hour. Something about two 10-year-old boys having a great time beating sticks together and swordfighting just absolutely overjoyed me. I forgot for a while how badly I have felt and just sat smiling. Oh how I needed that today - thank You, Jesus! :) I will soon know the joy of watching my precious two interact (though it will not quite look like your two ;). I imagine my precious boy feeding (and diapering - he's offered!...but we'll see if THAT pans out ;) and soothing and talking to this new one...it just picks at my Mommy-heart like your precious day. We all feel these kinds of days...but oh the joys mixed in are our reminders that He sees us and He knows exactly what we need.

P.S. I spilled a glass of ice water EVERYWHERE this morning in my living room; a little old lady got out of her car at the grocery store earlier and dinged my door hard enough to not only rock my SUV but also leave a paint chip and a major scratch; and I am putting together an Easter party for about 30+ kids TOMORROW (decided today)...it's been a rough day here, too. But God's blessings are abundant!

God told us that "every good and perfect gift is from above", but He didn't tell us that they are perfect nor are we perfect - just the gift from Him is perfect.

You will hear over and over how time flies, and when mine were wee-ones I did not believe it for a minute. But truth sometimes is hard to swallow, and too soon those wee-ones walk out our door into adulthood.

Thankfully God's grace is bigger than our feeble days, our tired days, our out of sorts days; and soon you will laugh at your new carpet colour of washed in/out red tomatoe paste; that won't come out until you replace that piece.

Thank you for a peek into your lovely life, fallen pizza and all and remember God had that in His plan too!!

This is an adaptation from one of my FAVORITE books... and if you are a mom..you will relate!

IF YOU GIVE A MOM A MUFFIN
Original Author Unknown

If you give a mom a muffin,
She'll want a cup of coffee to go with it.
She'll pour herself some.
Her three-year-old will spill the coffee.
She'll wipe it up.
Wiping the floor, she'll find dirty socks.
She'll remember she has to do laundry.
When she puts the laundry in the washer,
She'll trip over boots and bump into the freezer.
Bumping into the freezer will remind her she has to plan for supper.
She will get out a pound of hamburger.
She'll look for her cookbook ("101 Things To Do With a Pound of Hamburger").
The cookbook is sitting under a pile of mail.
She will see the phone bill, which is due tomorrow.
She will look for her checkbook.
The check book is in her purse that is being dumped out by her two-year-old.
She'll smell something funny.
She'll change the two year old's diaper.
While she is changing the diaper, the phone will ring.
Her five-year-old will answer and hang up.
She'll remember she wants to phone a friend for coffee.
Thinking of coffee will remind her that she was going to have a cup.
And chances are…
If she has a cup of coffee,
Her kids will have eaten the muffin that went with it.

Oh, Amanda,
Though I'm a grandma now, reading your post brought back a memory like it was yesterday. . .
My son was 2, daughter 1, and I did daycare for a 2-yr-old girl and 9-month old boy.
my son decided he would "wash" the girls hair with toothpaste (and yes, she had hair down the middle of her back),and the 9-month-old had a diaper explosion. I got the two cleaned up and changed, got my 1-yr-old off the top of the refrigerator (she was a climber) then put everyone down for a nap (even though it was only mid-morning). As I put my daughter in her crib, she touched the mattress, and a huge cloud of baby powder "poofed" up to the ceiling. I didn't even notice with the white crib sheet! "I just wanted the bed to smell pretty for da-ahna, mommy!"

Now, 27 years later, said son is a pastor; daughter is the wife of a youth pastor. They do grow up, as I'm sure your mama has told you. But it still makes me tired, just remembering . . .

I am so sorry darlin', but this mamma of one close to your age and near to your same stage in life (grands are 16 weeks and 2 years) - who has had a HORRIBLE time the last two weeks had to chuckle a little bit - and it is SOOOOOO not funny I know - been there and done that and praise God, lived through it ----- screaming, fits, teething, growing pains, no sleep, decisions to make, bills to pay, and etc. etc. etc. - I have been beside myself to know what to do to support the daughter ---- and seem to have failed miserably!

Bless you girl and bless her - with peace!

As crazy as your day was - and it is OK to bribe once in a while!! - I remember when I was your age and my kids were small my mother said to me, "honey, these are the best days of your life" and I thought "Oh yeah - those are easy words from someone who gets to shave both legs on the same day.." Well now I get to shave both legs on the same day, sleep all night long, eat without sharing my food and/or drink and my house is normally always quiet. But you know what - I miss those days like you just described. Empty nest is fine, but my mom was right - those were the best days of my life. Hang in there!!

Oh, I remember those days and I really thought I would come undone. I remember a mentor mom telling me that the physical demand and exhaustion gets so much better, but the mental and emotional exhaustion takes over when they get a little older. I thought, "Yeah right, I'm tougher than you- I can't wait until I'm not exhausted all the time." Turns out she was right. I miss those days- I remember the tired that was so deep it was palpable, and I don't miss it, but sometimes I have to concede, it was a little easier (I guess because I knew that at 8:00 pm it would all quiet down). Hang in there- you'll make it. Enjoy them while they are little...and make sure you put all of your sharpies away. I'm just saying- it's a good piece of advice. Trust me.

Oh you crack me up! Have to say I've had many days like that when my girls (Julia 6 & Anna 8) were young....I guess I still have them - it's still building character in me (if I admit it half of the time those kinds of things are my own fault). I'm sure you've heard about Layla Grace & her struggle with cancer and how she's up w/Jesus now. It really has made me look at those types of situations w/my girls and just smile. I'm SO grateful I have those kinds of days b/c I still have our precious girls here with me!

Seriously, hope you have a better day tomorrow. If not, maybe you need to take a little time for yourself and get a pedicure - that always helps me! :)

So totally glad I'm not alone. Two boys ages almost 4 (3/27) and 8. Separately they are precious, together they are precarious - literally a hazard to each other. Considering part time work just to preserve my sanity. And although I love being reminded that the days will pass quickly, that just makes me feel guilty for the fact that today is really hard and I'm always so glad when it's over and I can sneak off to read the blog or the Word or SLI....or even (gasp) watch American Idol!! ;-P

That could have been the description of my day when my boys were younger. Thank you for the stroll down memory lane!

My boys are now 11 and 9 and our days are a different kind of messy now. But the smiles and the hugs are better than ever.

May you continue to be blessed as you enjoy each wonderful and unique stage of parenting.

Oh, Amanda! What a morning!!!

Is it any wonder that both of the insecurity triggers I discovered this week revolve around my view of myself as a mom????? The freedom came when I realized that my insecurity was being fed by 1)my fear that I would FEEL like a bad mom and 2) my fear that OTHERS would think I was a bad mom. It made me laugh when God pointed out that I'm not afraid of actually BEING a bad mom at this point b/c after 9 years, I know I'm a good mom. I just hate FEELING like a bad mom or worry about what others think of my mom skills. Sheesh! Saying SO LONG to that insecurity!! I know I have a LOT to work on, but so does every parent except God.
I'm choosing to be a SECURE Mom in Him...

Seems like yesterday when I had the same kinds of things going on at our house. Someone told me that I would look back on those days with fond memories and wishing them to come back. I guess I blinked when I shouldn't have because my girls are 12 and 9. They grow so fast. Enjoy those napless days!

Sorry for the cheesy way to get your attention!

Would you and your family like rodeo tickets this Saturday? I have some great lower level seats I would love to bless you with.

If you are in Toronto, maybe Curtis wants some to take Action Jackson and/or your daddy or some other friends.

Please let me know soon.
Thanks!

Gosh, I miss naptime!! Enjoy it while it lasts!

I had a friend who used to compare God's grace to a freight train. He'd always say "Everything you need is on its way. It's like a freight train, you can't stop it!" (now if you've ever seen the movie, Hitch, and you enjoy the dance lesson scene with Kevin James as much as I do... the "you can't stop it" line adds a broad grin to the face while thinking of it!) But I digress...

"And God is able to make all grace abound to you, so that in ALL things, at ALL times, having ALL that you need, you will abound in every good work."

One mama to another ;)

Man, that time flies by so quickly. It's crazy, but I actually miss those days. :o)

My little people are now 10 & 13--and my 13 year old son is now five inches taller than me. He's the one trying to pick me up. We used to wrestle all the time, now he has to be careful not to hurt me.

My sweet girl was outside on her skates with her iPod today. She skated, sang and pretended her heart out. Man was she fun to watch!

May we store up these treasures as often as we can, for they grow up so quickly. Your post was a great reminder to do that.

Love,

Anna

Oh, Amanda, I so relate. Last week my 8 yr old had a weird eye thing took her to the Dr.(she's fine now), computer wouldn't work, so I'm behind on everything, 10 yr old had 5 stitches in the forehead, sat in ER until 10pm for that, now the 6 yr old has a cough and chest cold. I feel like I've had no time for myself and certainly know the "quiet time", like "please God help me with these kids, I'm so tired today" that's about that. So much for my 40 Day of Faith (seeking God for wisdom, direction and anything else) now it's just about survival.:)

Praise the Lord for new days, right! Isn't Parenthood so humbling. Bless you as you are in this, often time, crazy phase. I constantly feel like I am a walking Family Circus cartoon. Seriously I think parenting small children is so rewarding, yet so tiring. Proud of you for ordering the pizza AND giving in when the delivery guy said he would bring a new one back. And by the way you did say you weren't feeling good earlier in the morning and pizza sounded really good...should we be awaiting an announcement? Hee hee hee. Only kidding (kind of). Bless you tomorrow, hang in there and know there are many of us who know how you feel.

seriously.

I just had a flashback to 8 years ago when my son was 4 and my daughter was 1! Just wait til you find her at 2 years old up in a tree in the backyard trying to copy her big brother...

Two nights ago that same boy, 12 years old now, asked if he could cook me dinner for the first time. (He made mac&cheese, and I ate it with proud tears in my eyes.) Then his 9 year old sister said she wanted to give me a foot massage.

Best job I've ever had, being their mama! :)

Oh my sweet sister. I have to smile at the memory of those days. Sucking toothpaste out of the tube. At the time seems like more chaos but what a sweet memory that will make when you are my age. Sorry about he pizza. I dumped my boys birthday cake upside down on the living room carpet one year. Yikes, cake with fuzz on it!!! I smile now just thinking about it. And yes, like you I was embarrassed and frustrated. I had to remind my self, Okay, April in the scope of eternity how important was that really? Now over ten years later I laugh and smile at the memory of me dumping JP's birthday cake on the floor.
Thank goodness God made only 24 hours in a day and tomorrow will be a new one. Love you so sweet thing and Thank you for letting me take a peek into your life.

Oh my! Our day wasn't as crazy as yours but I did yell at my 2 year old. He was trying to climb in the dishwasher after trying to "help" with various other things in the kitchen...like the sterilized bottles for his 2 month old sister. When I pulled him off (out of?) the dishwasher he ran to his room saying "night, night!" and closed and locked the door behind him. He was able to unlock it and get out before either one of us was traumatized. ;-)
