That's Not What I'm Doing
A few evenings ago, the Joneses were over at our house for dinner along with Keith's parents so we could celebrate CJ's and Pop's birthdays. (Curtis's was over the holidays while they were out of town so I had a roast and mashed potatoes and green bean casserole waiting for him when they got back to Houston. It happens to be Keith's Dad's favorite meal, too, so they made a great pair for a Moore celebration.) My adorable grandson is not much for lingering at the dinner table once his half-pint tummy is full so, about the third time he was told to get out from under the table and back up in his chair, I started strategizing an exit plan. I didn't have to wait long.
"Bibby, wanna play wis me?"
Sensing this was escape from an inevitable time out, I quipped, "Of course, I want to play with you!"
And, while everyone else sat at the table and talked, Jackson and I headed to the den to play. We play all sorts of things when he's at my house. Last night, for instance, we played toy store and he "sold" me (and his mommy) various toys from his big box at Bibby's (actually, his old pack 'n play) for pennies and nickles that he promptly stuck in his play-wallet. It was great fun. He's like a lot of sales folks, however. He is more inclined to sell you what he wants you to buy rather than what you request. I was just as content with his selections anyway. It makes me really happy when he thinks something like a lizard would suit me best. Last night was a departure from our norm. We ordinarily play cars. We sit across from one another, each with a matchbox car, and we say in unison, "One, two, three, GO!" And on "go," we each spin a car as fast as we can toward the other with the chief objective to make them crash. It's harder than you think for a boy and his grandmother and we high-five if they do.
Several nights ago, the night on the table for this post, the play of choice was blocks. Brand new ones, as a matter of fact. I'd ordered him a really cool set off the Internet for Christmas and, when I received them from UPS, the toy company had added a smaller bonus box. I promptly snatched them up for Bibby's house. Maybe you've seen the kind. They're made for little builders with all sorts of accessories like wrenches and bolts and wheels.

You can't imagine all the shapes you can make. Hence, my story.
Jackson didn't feel very well that evening like most people in Houston. He'd been coughing and snorting like his life depended on it. As a matter of fact, much of the time we were down on the floor in the den, building blocks, he had his head propped against my right shoulder. I reasoned to myself that when I don't feel well, my creative juices tend to be stifled and, if that were the case for the three-and-a-half-year-old sitting next to me, he could probably use some help with construction concepts. So, I said, "Why don't you put this piece right here?"
Shook his head.
"OK, well, how about putting this wheel on this side so it will roll really good?"
Shook his head again.
Hmmmm. Almost out of ideas. "Well, we don't have many bolts on this side. Wanna put a few over here?"
He picked his head up off my shoulder, looked straight in my eyes, and said, not rudely but firmly,
"Bibby, that's not what I'm doing."
It was everything I could do not to bust out laughing.
Instead, a very serious, "Oh, I see! Sorry, Buddy. You go right ahead."
To which he seemed relieved.
The lesson wasn't wasted on me. I didn't have to wait till my head was on the pillow and started spinning. I never made it off the floor without thinking how often I try to help God out with ideas. "Why don't You do it this way?" Or, "why don't You do so and so with so and so?"
I'm forever giving God workable suggestions about how He could - sometimes, if I may be so bold, should - handle something. Or someone.
Anybody else?
Don't you know there are times He wants to say to us right out loud in our stubborn hearing, "Child, THAT'S NOT WHAT I'M DOING."
Often, we just don't know what God is doing. So often we think we do but, the truth is, we just don't. Thankfully, He does. He really does. He doesn't need our help. Our brilliant ideas. Or our last ditch efforts because He ignored our first ten suggestions. He just wants our cooperation.
He is constructing something beyond our human rationale. He knows in advance every piece - past, present, and future - that will be required for the finished work. He has all the patience in the universe to put it together. We see one little part and one little moment. He, the One who is, who was, and is to come, sees beyond the singular piece to every generation and condition He means to effect. Meanwhile, He works all things together for good for those who love Him and are called according to His purpose. The one thing may not be good at all by itself. In fact, it may be horrendous. Criminal. It's when He weaves it with all that comes before it and all that will come around and behind it that something good, something beneficial, emerges.
Never let Romans 8:28 become so familiar that you subconsciously fold it into your spiritual fairy tale file. It is as true today as it was the moment the Apostle dripped the letters on the parchment. Don't blow them dry.
Maybe it's not that God isn't listening. Maybe it's just that what we keep suggesting is not exactly what He's doing. And, if that's so, what He's doing can only be better and more effectual than what we think we'd do in His place.
John 13:7 says something that keeps ringing in my ears.
Jesus replied, "You do not realize now what I am doing, but later you will understand."
Later.
LATER.
L.A.T.E.R.
We WILL understand.

You cannot possibly EVEN FOR ONE SECOND imagine how these words just drilled into my head and heart this morning.
I was just telling your grandson's mother 10 minutes ago that I'M GOING TO TRUST HIM, by golly, even if it kills me, and even if I JUST CAN'T SEE IT.
I'm going to go put my head on somebody's shoulder and bawl.
Thank you for letting God rock my world through your words.
Thank you, Beth! Speaks to me so much at this point! A great confirmation to what God has been saying! We don't know as much as we think we do!!! Nothing, really! Your ministry has been a blessing! I will copy/paste that and stick it somewhere I can see to remind myself!!! :)
divorced 3 times, 2 sons 17 and 15 who will only be okay emotionally by a miracle of God, I certainly have not equipped them in my time with them, we've all just tried to survive, I am struggling with addictions of my own, and I am a christian. It just doesn't seem like it. I needed this hope this morning. Thank you.
Profound! LOVED IT! AMEN!!!
His ways are not our ways... but His sure are GOoD... and ALWAYS the best way!
He is the Creator, after all, the Maker, the Potter with this feeble clay. His goal is to make beautiful! Glorious! His Light splendorously displayed!
Love you, Beth Moore! Love your heart for His!
Sometimes, I wonder if my demand to understand is really just a shroud for my rebellion. I do hope to understand one day, but I have to confess, a lot of my prayers begin, "Lord, I just don't get it." And I don't. And I don't have to--at least for now. He is building something so much better than we can ask or imagine. And sometimes it takes a 3 year old to help us understand that we don't really understand at all. That One Day will be so good. Hope you're feeling better each day.

Goog point. I too find myself flustered at times when God doesn't do things that, to me anyway, make all trhe sense in the world. I guess I need to stop and look through his big picture window instead of my peep hole. Can't wait til next weekend.
Love,
Jan
Oh, how I needed this lesson today! In the midst of everyday turmoil and stress that I attempt to control, HE is doing something so wonderful I can't even begin to imagine. Thank you, Beth!
Raising hand here..guilty. This spoke to me today...thanks for sharing.
Just what I needed to hear... thanks.
How incredibly appropriate for me today. Thanks, Miss Beth.
Reading in 1 Samuel and just finished Judges. The last verse in Judges just sends chills up and down my spine. "...a man simply did whatever He thought was right." (Is that not what our country is doing right now?) So, then I begin 1 Samuel this morning with "...there was a man..." Thus, begins the story of Elkanah and Hannah and oh, yeah, Elkanah's second wife.
Hannah so longs for a child and she prays earnestly. Adonai knew exactly what He was doing by not giving her what she wanted right away. I, like, Hannah, wonder "God, what are you doing? My nation is falling apart. Might I make a few suggestions here on how to help my country, dear Adonai?" Yet, He knows exactly the plan and I, we, will understand LATER. Won't we?
Hannah doesn't stop praying and comes to the point where she makes a vow before her God. I think Adonai wanted her to come to that place of making a sacred vow because after she made it, she ate and was no longer sad. I'm thinking she realized she had to just leave it to God's hands and she didn't have to understand the plan.
Hmm.
Our purpose in life is to love our Adonai with all our heart, soul and resources. To obey Him is to reflect our deepest love for Him. May I learn to rest in Him and know that LATER is not a bad word.

Wonderful analogy. And yes, I struggle with that too. I will often have to remind myself that that's not what God is doing. :)
That's a good word, sister Beth. A good word.
What a great lesson. Not lost on me at all. Thank you for sharing Beth.
Blessings

I remember what a lady said in a Training Union class. She asked if we had ever had a child to try and help us fold laundry. What was the result? It is the same thing when we don't let go and let God handle His plans. If He wants our help, He will let us know.
Oh how I needed this.
So True! I learned a lesson from my daughter last week too. We both were pouting about something (in our own ways)and the Lord used my sweet little hormone ridden 5 year old girl to give me a picture of how selfish my heart can be sometimes too!
Oh Beth, how I needed to hear this, this morning!
Someday, we will understand...that gives me such hope.

Thank you so much for this today. I had a melt down yesterday over this same thing. God I don't get it? Why? Why? Why are you letting this happen and that happen? Why don't you just do this?
He sees it all. Right now all I see is the hurt. Thanks for reminding me to give it back to Him and let Him work it.
PS- My MC 2 loves for me to play farm with him, but I have to play how he wants to play.
What a blessed post and I thank you for it. Brings into perspective all that is happening in my life personally as well as national and global situations.
Blessings to your family. I'm glad you are feeling better and I hope Jackson gets in top form soon! Sick little ones makes a person so sad.
I'm off to finish my kooga making project. Have a wonderful weekend.
Blessings

Good rainy Saturday morning Beth!
Excellent lesson . . . and one so needed.
How true that is! I have really been spending alot of time in prayer lately and asking Him to help me be a better Christian and I want to know him more because I get way too pushy. Just like in everything else I do! I needed to read this this morning, thank you!!!
Thank you, Thank you, Jackson and Beth for this need reminder! I would love to see your final creation Jackson! I am also eager to see how Abba works this current struggle out. My heart rests knowing that nothing is waisted in God's economy!
Thank you!!
good lesson *U* God has alot to teach His children, huh? Lots of lessons come from the children and the animals here for me. You'd be surprised was a herd of goats, horses, or a flock of chickens, or a mamma cat with a litter of kittens to train up has to say if you will only listen~
Hallelujah and amen. We will, won't we? Nothing could be more comforting right now in light of the current crisis in Haiti.
He's still on the throne; He's still in control.
Thank you for your wisdom! Just what I needed to hear today!
I can't wait to see you in person next weekend! May God bless you and everyone at LMP as you guys prepare for the SMT Celebration! Thank you for this wonderful opportunity!
needed this fresh word, omgosh, how it spoke and how this one woman tries, so hard to help the Father when she should just be still and know !! hahaha get it KNOW that I AM GOD ! yes, thank you for pointing me toward the Savior, as always darlin' ! still praying for you a full recovery! I have finally began my own blog after being a lurker for so long...haha, this is JesusChick from NC, a Raleigh girl, A Boone fanatic that loves MOORE of Jesus and its a work in progress just like I am! We are beginning Daniel in 1 week desiring prayers for wisdom, and knowledge from HIM !
Glory to our Savior !
Thanks, Beth, I needed the encouragement. I also had the "quick moment" to stop and check out the Blog. Being a gammy and taking care of a 3yr old usually every day I have very little time to stop. Oh, by the way, Amanda, about the earaches, I thought one day about the fact of when we go to the doctor, they usually prescribe some kind of oil drops to use. One day I had some ear pain and I thought about oil. Well I went to the cabinet and got my olive oil, poured a small amount of it in a small cup, microwaved it just a tad and dropped some in my ear. It was a relief. Try it!
Thank goodness He loves me and has more patience than I'm sure I deserve! The L.A.T.E.R. is so hard!
Thank you - That lesson was very needed right now. Later, Lindsay, later.
Thank you for this post....it was EXACTLY what I needed to hear!
Oh my goodness! I have loved some posts on here but this one may be my all-time favorite and the one I need to hear the most! WOW! "That is not what I am doing." I am going to remember this and try, try, TRY to stop making suggestions to God. Oh, thank you for this lesson and reminder!
Thank you Beth and Jackson ........ I needed to hear this one today. With both of my children in trouble and having the care of my 2yr old grand daughter full time due to maternal instincts not yet bloomed, sometimes I get so tired, I forget that somehow this is part of a much larger picture that I just can't see but thankfully, He sees and He is doing his plan for everyone's lives in this little picture of mine. Thank you Lord. Amen
You cut right to the heart of the matter. Thank you!!!!!
What a great picture of how God is at work in our lives. I've got some situations I can apply this to right now. Thanks for sharing, Beth. Blessings to you this weekend!
Wow! SO good and much needed reminder. Love how God uses those "Mommy Moments" or in your case "Bibby..Bits??" :) to teach us His truths.
Your a great Mom, Bibby and Siesta Momma! Thanks for loving us the way you do!
AMEN and AMEN... thanks for the reminder!
Thank you, dear Beth.
Its been a sad week. A loved one lost her father very suddenly, another is making poor decisions because of untreated mental health issues he won't seek help for...
this was a timely reminder that HE knows that this will work for GOOD.
Oh praise Him.
Thank you.
sister Lynn
Awesome! Just walking through this one...just two mornings ago, I said, God I see the No, but I do not see how there is a greater Yes coming.... I was so discouraged and finally just stood in my bedroom, arms lifted and said, I surrender, I surrender, I surrender...
He was probably saying, Thank you Child, that was not what I was doing.
Needed that.
I love the gift of insight God has given you to see His truths in everyday events. Thank you for your encouragement.
Thank you so much for sharing! I needed this today. My baby girl passed away 2.5 wks ago and there are many times I struggle right now with what God is doing.
I love this Beth. So many times I find my eyes fixed on something I want with God also. The fixed thing is of course 'my idea'. I was pondering that very thought before I read this post. God is calling me to do some 'out of the box' things. It is a daily challenge to let go of my expectations and get in the flow with His. There is no doubt His plans are better but sometimes we tend to want to walk in other's paths. Jesus however wants to do something FRESH and that will only happen following His steps. Thanks so much to LPM for helping us minister in the Village, a low income housing project. We are in our second week of The Inheritance. It is not a place I expected to be called to minister to but the Lord is meeting us there powerfully every week. We are on week 2. The ladies are really warming up to you:) Not one of them had a clue who you were when we started this Bible study. Don't you just love that! They have never been a part of a Bible study with their OWN WORKBOOK. They want something MORE in their life. I think God is smiling adding you, the 'Big B' Moore to join my friend B, the artist and me also called B. We are sharing Jesus there with you. Our gatherings with the women are called "Flying Lessons". I remember what Jackson said to you about your saint statue in your yard. "Bibby, does Jesus like birds?" The BB's(stands for 'bird brains' or 'big beaks' depending on the day) think so also. We love sharing the Word with you! When you get enough of the WORD in you...YOU CAN FLY!
Much love to the Big B,
the little b
Man did that preach to me!
Yes, He is God ALL by HIMSELF! How awesome that He lets me join Him in HIS work. I can partner with Him but He is the ONE and ONLY BOSS!
Thanks for this post!
Amen. Just amen. I've had a morning of realizing that in its complete fullness....... Thank you, Beth. Wise as ever.
Beth -
This post was like a pie being thrown....hit me smack dab in the face honey....thank you.
As I wipe the whipped cream from my face...how may times have I given God supggestions on how to....
You are soooooo right. Sweetie, you put things so plain and simple. I will have to remember the next time I explain to God how to...."Becky, that's Not What I'm Doing." Wheeew !
Thank you so much.
P.s. I have played my share of crash the cars with my boys too....it's kind-a- fun.
:0)
I love posts like this that take me completely by surprise...I thought this was going to be about playing with blocks...wasn't expecting to be in tears by the end.:)
I have just started reading The Path of Loneliness by Elisabeth Elliot and oh did this post just speak to what I have been reading. Walking by faith even if I have no idea what is going on or what He is doing...but to cling to Him and trust and have and walk in faith that He knows what He is doing.
Love and Blessings to you,
Michelle in VT
Thank you, Beth...love to you, Allison
Ive been deeply touched by a site that I have my art on called Redbubble. I've met 3 wonderful Christian women that are artist/writers and they have so encouraged me in my art and I know that God brought them to me cause I can hardly contain the love and acceptance I am feeling.
Oh Bibby, Gran Jan needed that WORD this morning... I prayed through most of yesterday that whatever "nameless burden" was hovering over me ALL DAY LONG would manifest for Him - whatever He was doing.
I am normally very sanguine and upbeat, but yesterday I was preoccupied in my spirit all day - praying for the Haitians, remembering my sister who would have turned 50 this coming Monday and thinking about the party we would have had (and alternately rejoicing in knowing the party she IS having) mourning my friend's news that her cancer is back, and then learning late in the day we would yet again be furloughed 3 more days without pay...
But oh Beth, God is so faithful and I want my life to count for Him more than anything I know.
Thank you for being so real and there for all of us.
Your friend, GJ
PS: My grandson Zeke is just 17 months old, so our play isn't quite as developed as yours and Jacksons. But he and I ALWAYS sneak away from the table too, and I'm the one who gets him out of his highchair before he gets in trouble again for throwing food on the floor...
We sneak to my pantry and eat Cinnamon Toast Crunch...please don't tell...he LOVES that game...
Thanks for that affirmation just reading this morning the LORD's reply to Job. it's the patience waiting for His ways to be my way. Thanks for reminding that He is after the greater glory in our lives and sometime I get in a hurry and try to fix it myself and settle for less.
see you next Friday thanks for all you do Him and us
Marilyn, Attalla, Al
Okie dokie, that one is coming in loud and clear! That one will teach, now won't it?! I so needed to hear this . . . TODAY! Happy weekend, Alisa
I read your blog a million times a day, seems like, definitely the first thing I pull up when I get on my computer...thank you for being open to God and what he had to tell me! I was in the thick of things telling Him how I wanted Him to work things out between my husband and our daughter, who is hurting so deply from the wounds her dad has made with his tongue toward her, and while I was showering (some of my best times with the Lord are under running water) He laid on my heart to let Him do what He saw best. I had given this to Him and got out of the shower, head in a towel, and sat down at the computer to see what was up when He confirmed His words to my heart. God is good! And He is the only one who can change a heart or two or three...Lord help me! Jan
John 13:7 will be my 2nd scripture memory verse for 2010.I'm going to write it in my new spiral notebook this minute. I sure wish I could join you all in Houston next weekend to celebrate! For now, I'm just saying them to myself in the mirror and listening to myself repeat them back to myself...have a BLAST together!
Julia
(jewelsbb)
Woke up having a little pity party this morning. Asked God to show me how to stop throwing such a party. Opened your Blog and Voila! GOD IS GOOD!
Beth, I can never put into words what this post means to me right now! All I can say is ~
Thank you Dear Lord for this post from your faithful and valued servant and my precious friend and siesta in Christ~ Beth Moore ~!
God is still in control...
Thankfully!

YES - YES ! So hard, but so true. It brings me back to that awaful, dirty word that I HATE hearing..... "Patience"; Hits me like cold water ! I feel that God is doing some mighty stretching in my life. Wondering for the outcome is exciting, but the long, quiet wait is painful. Growing pains always are. Blessings to you, Beth. You are valuable....
Thank you, Abba.
Thank you, Beth! I'm one of those 'let-me-see-if-I-can-figure-this-one-out-so-I-can-put-all-of-these-crazy-pieces-together-and-make-myself-feel-better" people. Really, all I need to do is trust God with it and quit trying to figure Him out!
Thanks for the reminder.
This is what I needed to hear as well. I'm two weeks away from my due date with our little boy, Micah Justice, and just this morning I was journaling about how different and new our concerns are: preparing for parenthood, to buy a house or not, my husband passing his state boards this week for his RN, the mass amounts of layoffs, etc. But in all of this, God is not surprised or wringing his hands in worry, so I'm continuing to pray that we would TRUST him, live out his peace, know that everything belongs to him, and continue to seek his face and will, and pray to love him above all.
Thanks for the reminder!
During such a difficult season of suffering and 'why God?' moments, I have been offering Him many suggestions. I KNOW He is extending grace and being very patient with me. He knows so much more, but I'm too stubborn to see it sometimes. Posted all around my house and in my car right now is Romans 8:18 "For I reckon that the sufferings of this present time are not worthy to be compared to the glory which shall be revealed in us". So hard to understand. In my heart of hearts I know His ways are best and I prefer 'what He is doing' to anything I could ever dream up.
What a darling story and great analogy.
Thank you for this word. I SO needed to hear it! :) Hope you are feeling better & stronger each day. Have a blessed rest of the weekend! Love & hugs...
I love this one!
Just like a pregnant woman growing that new life inside her womb...we wouldn't want to rush that creation and deliver too soon. Or abort.
I am in one of those seasons of waiting. The picture of the baby growing to term helped me release God to do His Work in His time.
Waiting is very hard for me. But the lessons I am learning right now are very serious.
Happy birthday to those special men in your life, Beth. Your meal is one of my favorites, too!
Father in heaven, as I sit here excited beyond words to attend Beth's church next week for the Scripture Memorization celebration, I pray for a special anointing of Your Holy Spirit over Beth. Her body is weak and traumatized after the major health issues she's been through. I will stand on Your promise that 2 Cor. 12:9 most appropriately applies to Beth's needs right now:
But he said to me, "My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness." Therefore I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses, so that Christ's power may rest on me.
Strengthen Beth by Your Power.
LORD, be close and speak to those of us who are waiting on Your Perfect Creation in our lives. We trust You and give You time...precious time...to complete what You began in us.
In Jesus Name. AMEN.
My brain works very similar to yours. I could be sitting on the living room floor with any of my five children when a lesson pops into my head like that! :)
This was such a good reminder to me that God knows what He's doing!
-Melissa
L. A. T. E. R. But Why, God? my baby never had a chance to be born. I will continue to hold on to Him. Thank you for the encouragement, Beth.
THank you mama Siesta for this timely word. A confirmation to everything else that He has been speaking to me this morning everywhere that I turn. Guess I should pay attention, huh?
Love YOU.......
I needed that!
Isn't that such a struggle for we "fix it" women??? I know that God showed me some time ago that my prayer life consisted of "God, here are my options, and you may pick one" for which I needed some good ole-fashioned repentance!!! Now I'm much more content with "Lord, I have no earthly idea how this is going to work out, but -- You"
So thankful that God's Word IS true
What beautiful words the Holy Spirit gave you for this post Beth. I've been through so many rough times, and am learning to try to quickly look for the good in them. Sometimes it doesn't come quickly and I feel disappointed. John 13:7 and Roms. 8:28 blend together so beautifully. Jesus IS working in the midst of it all. I'm so grateful that He is! To just chill, cooperate with Him, and rest in Him...
The Holy Spirit gave me this verse yesterday during my lunch break at work:
Luke 10:41 (personalized)
"Kathy, Kathy", the Lord answered, "you are worried and upset about many things, but only one thing is needed."
Time with Jesus!!
Just going through a very "rough" season and when people have asked "how are you doing" I keep telling them God has good in store. Your message was a re-affirmation from Him. He has good in store.
Thank you for your faithfulness to Him in ALL you do!
Dear God -- Dear Lord,
Thank you Lord for speaking to me this AM through your servent Beth and this site. Praise you God. Like she said at one point, "sometimes we have to praise HIM first and we will feel it later" - LATER - LATER - I asked of YOU this am and YOU answered. I will continue to 'hangith in there babith" and love my darling where he is at while YOU LORD, do what YOU are doing. In the mean time, please Lord, continue to protect my marriage and keep us from any evil. AMEN!
AND PS, Beth -
Beth - I watched (on video tv/internet) you speak at Passion 2010 - powerful---!! I had NO idea of this outpouring and told my 19 year old that I WOULD be sending her next year and she was pumped! Thanks Amanda for sharing that!
This hits home for me Mama Beth.
Thank you.
xoxo
Angie
Hi there, Beth! I've been wanting to comment on your blog for over a year now. We just moved to Houston from Wyoming. What an incredible culture shock to go from there to here! (My husband was transferred with Anadarko, and he now works in The Woodlands office.) I have NEVER lived away from my family and now we live all the way down here, at the end of the world, with NO FAMILY AT ALL! It breaks my heart to pieces! But, at least both of our boys, 21 and 18, did move with us...oh, thank you Jesus!! The oldest is going to the College of Biblical Studies and the youngest just graduated last year from Klein Collins HS and is trying to become a pro golfer! Anyhow...I know you have tons of blogs to read everyday...I've just always wanted to say hi from Wyoming! I know you've been there lots of times. Oh yeah, almost forgot this part, my mom and I have gone to several of your conferences in Rapid City SD, Billings MT, and Denver....as a matter of fact, one time mom even "introduced" my sister and I to you at one of your conferences in Rapid City. She said that she thought that you were her "long lost daughter," because she has always thought that we all look like sisters. It was a hoot!! I'm sure you don't remember it, but it made our day!! Okee doke...I guess I've rambled on long enough....oops! Didn't mean to make this so long. So sorry!! Maybe someday I'll get to meet you down here in Houston, might even run into you at Starbucks or something. Oh shoot, one more thing...I just finished leading your Esther Bible study with a small group, and they all want to come to one of your live tapings sometime next month, or one night before it ends. That sure would be fun! Maybe then I could say hi to you afterwards. It's kind of weird cause I feel like I already know you cause I've been doing your Bible studies since my boys were tiny. There I go again....writing more. I sure hope this wasn't so long that you don't even get it. Anyhow...love from WY! (P.S. Esther was my VERY favorite....loved it loved it LOVED IT!!!!)
We will understand LATER!! Praise HIM!
Beth, I am so grateful (not always during the trial)that God never listens to my suggestions. They would have brought on disasterous situations for sure. I can look back on so many times in my life when I have begged God for one thing and He gave me something completely different and guess what??? Shock....He was right!!
I have walked with God long enough now that I am FINALLY beginning to settle down when I face a crisis. I am secure in the fact that He will do what is right and just...I trust HIM!! Now...that's freedom. Praise Him! It's only taken me 36 years (hahaha) to get to this point and I still have a long way to go. But, one thing I know for sure is HIS way are not my ways. Thank you LORD!!
Love to you Beth and family. Thanks for sharing with us today.
amen!
What a sweet reminder to cooperate with what He wants to do. I love the fact that you all were playing with a new set too! God has been doing some new things and I don't feel as comfortable as I did with the old standby's... And your comment "you can't imagine all the shapes you can make" made me think of Ephesians 3:20 & 21 and the beyond, BEYOND of God.
Love you.
But what if what he is doing is killing you? What if it hurts so bad and there is no relief and you can't last one more minute? What if you have begged and pleaded and done your very best with everything in you to trust him, but it has been so long and so hard and you just can't do it anymore...because you are dying inside? What if all you want is his will and you have tried to follow because that is what has to be but he won't talk to you so you don't know what to do...What if all hope is gone? What if you have begged for HIS joy and HIM to satisfy and still you are in dispair...Not even for HIM to change the circumstances but for Him to change your heart, but nothing is happeing. All that you do is survive. One second at a time and you don't want to just survive. You want that abudnant life and that no eye has seen kind of life that glorfies him but all you get is shame and hurt and betryal and your heart broken in a million pieces. What if you want with all your heart to believe, but you just can't. You just can't. It hurts to much. You wake up and wonder if today is the day that you are destroyed?
What then? You are trapped because of other people. You can't leave and it is killing you to stay. Yet God still says wait, but without the sustainance. What then. What do you do then?
so true... Word well spoken and godly timed! imagine that =)
Jan 5th I received a diagnosis that has turned my world upside down. I have seen miracles everyday just as I have had opportunities for learning each day as well. I have finally come to realize this malady is just for a season then I will be healthy again. I'm not sure how long this season will last but I desire to praise Him no matter what. I am learning so much from God during this season I would not have learned otherwise.
Thank you for sharing about your play time with Jackson and how you are receiving wisdom from God through your daily experiences.
Most important is your takeaway from that experience with the John scripture.
Thank you for blessing me one more time.
Thanks for posting this Beth! It's what I needed to read.
-Yes Lord, this isn't easy. But, I am believing that You are working all things together for the good, and You will help me to understand later!
What a wonderful "duh!" moment that we can all learn from! Thanks for reminding me once again how God uses regular, everyday happenings to teach us what we ought to already know!
Love hearing stories about your grandbabies...aren't they just the BEST???!!!
It always amazes me how you pick out these little lessons from normal every day experiences. I probably wouldn't have gotten it at all. It amazes me on the rare occasion that I do pick up on something. I'm always so impressed. Unfortunately, I'm probably way to impressed with MYSELF, for Him to do that to often. I forget that only He could put those things in my head.

GOOD WORD!!!
GOD SPEAKS TO US~
"CHILD THAT'S NOT WHAT I'M DOING!"
I have been feeling rather low lately. This blog story helped uplift me to find my way to where I need to be ~~~~
IN THE WORD & NOT THE WORLD!!!!!!
Thank you for your openness!
With "Heaven Bound" blessings,
Kim
Great Post! It reminds me of a little poem I used to keep in my locker at school years ago, many have probably heard of it:
Like children come to Parents, with broken toys to mend,
I took my broken dreams to God because he is my friend,
bt then instead of leaving him in peace to work alone,
I hung around and tried to help in ways that were my own,
I soon grew impatient and said, "Oh Lord, why must you be so slow?"
He said, "My Child, what can I do"you never let your burden go"
Well, crud! You mean I don't really know better than God?!
I say that with only slight sarcasm. I often walk around thinking that I really do have a better idea of what to do than He does. I have a suspicion that He occasionally allows me to see just what it's like when I get to do everything my own way. Needless to say, it's never real pretty.
It's a trust thing, really. I've gotta open myself up enough to be vulnerable with God. I've got to believe that He knows what He's doing, even when it seems confusing. Even when it hurts. Thankfully, He's always there to soothe me - and everyone else.
Besides, isn't it true that what He's doing is usually ends up being a whole lot cooler than what He isn't?

This is a word well spoken. Just went through a "life can turn on a dime" thing and now the aftershocks. I love the Lord. He is soooo my rock.
My, oh my, how the Lord is preaching this lesson to me at every turn. I thought I was getting it until I read your post. Once again, I think I have it. The Lord is pouring out His lavish love on me to help me understand His plan for me - and I want so badly to understand what He is up to and to cooperate. Thank you, Beth, once again for using your gift of communication for His good.
Beth, you should know that God inspired this post for ME TODAY. Yesterday, my position was eliminated from the firm I've been employed with for six years. For the first time in my 50 years on the planet, I was released from a job, rather than me voluntarily leaving for another opportunity.
I've been making strong suggestions to God for the past 24 hours. Think I'll stop now. And John 13:7 is now in my scripture memory spiral.
After having to release 12 other employees over the past eighteen months, I now find myself on the other side of the desk, packing my personal effects, wondering how I will ever find a position making as good a salary. Wondering. The "not knowing" is very scary. But God gave me the last job, so I'm believing He's got something better for me and only had to remove me from my current position in order for me to see the new opportunity.
I would appreciate the prayers of my fellow-siestas and the LPM staff as I walk this new, unbeaten path of faith.
Kim
Beth,
I am recommending your book to
everyone! (So Long, Insecurity)
A young woman said to me,
"What does it feel like to be humble
versus being taken advantage of?"
BINGO!
Thanks for FOLLOWING HIM!
Love,

this is the story of my spiritual life! His ways are not mine...HE does not want to take a shortcut, HE likes it HIS was...and it really is best, when i look back and see and understand..so i am waiting for LATER to Understand all,,,
Thank you for that. I needed to be reminded. At times I find myself praying with a list of ideas for how God should take care of the things that I am struggling with. He is in control and I am so thankful that He is but at times I need to be reminded that it's not about me, it's about Him and His plan.
Great lesson! I love how you're so attentive to little Jackson and you end up serving God in doing so!
Bless you dear Beth, and Thank You.
WendyBee
Yes, Thanks! :-)
Dear Anonymous-Divorced-3-Times,
DO NOT let your past read like prophecy over your future. DO NOT!! You are a dearly loved daughter of a King and He has a plan that is exceedingly wonderful for you. Sure you have made some mistakes...we all have, but He has a legacy for you to leave and He is working it all out for your good and His glory. Hold onto that, my sweet sister. Hold on.
Leah @ The Point
Thank you so much!!!This resonated with my spirit today! I am so guilty of trying to direct the plans He has for me. Sometimes I marvel at the way you can turn an everyday occurrence in to a teachable moment from the Savior! I pray one day to be used in this way. Thank you.
Thanks for the reminder. It came at just the right time. I guess I will just have to wait and see what God is up to, not that I have any choice. Kim B. in AZ
For my Bible study last fall, I took "The Intentional Woman," by Carol Travilla and Joan Webb. It was a wonderful study! We were supposed to partner up and over the course of two weeks come up with the framework of a Personal Mission Statement. Of course, I was confused when my partner emailed a week later, asking how my PMS was coming...I totally responded to the other PMS question and not the personal mission statement one! Ha!
Anyway, I felt God lead me to understand that I need to be soft clay in His Hands and willing. Those words have given me such peace, as I submit to being His and letting Him mold and shape and guide.
As a strong-willed woman (sometimes with PMS!), I need to learn it...and let Him teach for Heaven's sake!
Thanks for the post Beth . For the last 18 or 19 months I have been wondering what God is doing in my life. He has moved so many of Christians friends out or my life. In fact we haven't been able to find a church home that fits us. I was thinking this morning that the friends that I have in my life right now are lost people. It seemed as if God spoke in His still small voice and said that is what I want for you right now. To be salt and light to these people that I have put in your life now. Please pray that I will be salt and light to these ones He has placed me with.
Sometimes God moves out of our comfort zones so we will be about He is doing.

Wow! I just read and meditated on Jeremiah 18:4, "But the pot he was shaping from the clay was marred in his hands, so the potter formed it into another pot, shaping it as seemed best to him." Beth, your story with Jackson and that Scripture together are like a big, red sign from the Lord, "ARE YOU PAYING ATTENTION, MY CHILD?" "Let me do it." period, no "But I wanna help, I can fix this part, yada, yada, yada". Thank you, Beth..love, Pam in San Diego
PS I love the feminine new look! Bravo!
ALWAYS trying to tell God how to get it done. Thank-you for this reminder to just let Him be the God, and I'll be the kid.
See you in 6 days!

I love it when God gives my heart spiritual lessons through my insightful grandchildren! Thanks for this post. Only one wee thing disturbed me: "Jackson didn't feel very well that evening like most people in Houston. He'd been coughing and snorting..." Ya'll have a lot of sickness going around? Maybe I'll come equipped with some Airborne when I arrive Friday! :)
i am about finished with a book about marriage. the tag line caught my eye when it suggested that marriage might possibly be more for our "holiness than for our happiness." yikes. this book has literally peeled open my tightly shut eyes and pried off my clinging grip to the fact that this life we live each day...isn't at all for us. it's not here to make me happy, delighted or fulfilled. it's not here to constantly pour ease and peace into my sweet little arrogant and self-serving self :) oooooh, what a stinkin hard reality. i might have even said this very thing out loud to someone going through a difficult time or circumstance, but you KNOW you KNOW it when it travels the long road from the head to the heart. ouch.
makes me think of the verse when paul described anything and everything else pure TRASH compared to the infinite WEALTH of knowing Jesus Christ our Lord...everything else trash.
this post was a sweet yet firm word for my stubborn ears today...thanks for sharing it. Lord, please help me learn to just acknowledge and rest in Your sweet, amazing Presence...and stop trying to build YOUR dang blocks :)
Beth, Thank you! I have been struggling with anticipating and also trying to help God with what He is doing in my life(change). With all my hard work I keep hitting a brick wall. You were able to put into words what I have felt God saying "That's Not What I'm Doing." You just comfirmed what I said I was going to do, which is stop assisting God and just have faith that what He wants me to do and where he wants me to go will be accomplished in His way and time, not mine. I love how He get our attention and speaks to us when we least expect it. Thank you again!!
My brother and his family moved to Haiti about 7 months ago. They are about 50 miles from the earthquake, but they felt it and are already affected in terms of available supplies and an influx of injured people into their city. My brother, Jared, traveled to Port au Prince for about 24 hours and saw the devastation for himself. He said that he could hear voices singing at night, "kek jou nou va konprann"--"some day we'll understand." It is humbling to think how weak our American faith is in comparison. I know we also each have trials and our own daily lives also stir up the same wonderings about how God works, but Haiti desperately needs our prayers. Thanks for sharing this, Beth.
I am So identifying with this! First, my seven year old grandson, Logan, and I still play cars just as you described. We play on the kitchen floor. And when we are successful with a 'crash' he shoots his arms straight up and says, 'awesome'. Call me silly, but I love it that you and Jackson and Logan and I play the same game.
Second, that's not what I'm doing, huh? I can identify there too. I wonder how often ABBA has said that to me. Even I know I have surely given Him cause many times. And truth is most likely I will again, but maybe those times are getting fewer as I age.
Thank you, Beth. I enjoy coming here to the LPM Blog more than my comments can ever convey.
Holy Hugs to you.
Hey Beth,
You can't know how much I needed to hear these words. My husband and I got married in May. He was laid off right before the wedding and has been hunting for a job ever since. (And, did I mention, I am in school?) Needless to say, it has been a very stressful time for us, yet, it has been a very sweet time too!
God has never failed to provide for us! Yet, there are still days when we shake our heads and ask God, "What in the world are you doing that it could possibly take THIS long?" We know his hand has been all over us, but sometimes it's hard to understand why things that seem so perfect from our perspective don't work out. Like you, I have given him countless suggestions of what he could do to make work everything out. He has yet to take one. :) But, I hold on to the hope that one of these days I will be SOO thankful he didn't take my suggestions! His ways are higher...
Love you!
I'm really bummed I can't make it to the Siesta Memory Verse celebration. With law school & finances, it didn't work out this year. But, I will be with you in spirit (and I look forward to watching the videos)!
Love,
Missy
my husband was/is so good at his job. the youth love him. the parents of the youth love him. but the elders and the sr. pastor don't and he has been asked to find a new job by may. after 8 years in ministry, my heart is broken and wounded. i want to throw in the towel and never step foot into ministry again. but it looks like God is taking us down that road again. i am dying to hear God say to me and my husband, "That's not what I'm doing." we'll see. but thank you for those very encouraging words. i can wait on Him.
Thank you! This is just what I needed to hear!!! Thank you!
Oh my.
Later.
Later I will understand.
Thank you for reminding me.
I need a hug.
Love,
Anne
Oh man, it's really hard waiting for later. Thanks Beth, as always, for putting things into perspective.
Beth, THANK YOU!! Your words spoke directly to my heart today. We are in a very difficult season of life. I am so emotional and physically drained this week. I have so felt God telling me to be open to where he might lead us. This was a great reminder that God sees the big picture and we are only seeing the here and now.
Later sometimes seems like too long to wait. However, in my mean-time, I will make it God-time. I will trust in Him until the reasons for all the "why's" are revealed.
Thanks Jackson...smart kid!
Oh, thank you for this encouragement in my goal to cooperate with God this year! It's hard...right now we have illness, housing issues and babies on the way and I have suggestions for Him about what needs to be done. I keep telling myself, "Be quiet. Listen. If there is action for you to take, God will be sure you know about it. Meanwhile: pray, pray, pray."
Just the other day I started praying according to my will and had to make a dead stop in the middle of it and ask forgiveness, which led me to pray,"According to your will Lord and I'm going to shut up and not add anything else". And then I added, but you know how I feel about it Lord....lol...I'm glad he does!
:)
Thanks for sharing such wisdom. There is so much we always want to help God with. The reminder is humbling that he just wants our obedience and cooperation when asked to participate.
Just this morning I was reading in Genesis the story of Sarai, Abram & Hagar. Trips me up every time. This is what God showed me this morning--Ishmael was 13 years old when God came to Abram, changed his name, reminded him of the covenant, and told him that he would have another son in 1 year. Abram's response was nearly disbelief--and he suggested to God that he just use Ishmael. Of course, we know from Romans that Abraham never waivered in belief, so it could not have been disbelief, but he sure seemed stunned!
What struck me this time was that Abram might (of course this is conjecture)....he just MIGHT have thought that he had actually solved God's problem when he conceived Ishmael with Hagar. He had waited so long for the promise to be fulfilled & perhaps he thought Sarai's solution was actually God's solution.
And then God obviously proved He really did have a different plan.
Your post just reminded me of that same truth. We try to "help" God so much. And what mercy when He fulfills His plan despite the "help" we have offered. What mercy was Isaac!
oh i sure needed to be reminded of this today.what we are to do is simply TRUST HIS PLAN AND THE ONE WHO KNOWS IT ALL. Then we are able to love people thru and remember when ohers did this for us.
Oh can I so relate to what you are saying...I am having to watch serveral difficult situations play out in my family life... and everytime I try to show Him my way... He is so gracious to just say... that Is not MY way and you are not in control... many times I do cry on my pillow and ask for the patience to trust what He has for me... some days it does feel like I am being shaken beyond belief...But true to form every time...He comes through with something so much bigger and so much better...
Thank you for sharing His words to help me remember ...He is the creator of everything good in my life...and it is in His timing and not mine...
Love you so much Mamma Beth
Beth, that spoke to my heart. Something happened recently where I was trying to "help".... actually I was trying to play God. With the collateral damage laying at my feet, I cried out to Him, why? I was just trying to help.... His small still voice asked me "Did I ask you help?" I am learning at His feet each day and sometimes the lessons are painful, but I will remember.
Beth,
I was just saying to my husband that I feel like Jacob wrestling with God. Six months ago, I finished treatment for invasive, aggressive breast cancer and now have increasing low back pain that isn't susbsiding and no real cause, so of course, it is scan time. It is taking great strength to not bargin with God. Your blog went straight to my heart....I trust and I believe!! My heart has been healed through the journey of breast cancer and there is no better healing than that! Blessings to you and your family!
Beth,
God's timing for you to write something as to God doesn't need our suggestions and help was really applicable for today's events.
See, I have 11 teenage girls in my home this weekend for a D-now retreat. Normally that isn't a problem at all other than it is raining a lot and we have a septic tank. Rain, showers in the morning, showers in the evening, and toilets flushing really begins to compromise the septic tank. I sat in the floor and began bawling because I NEEDED the Lord to stop all this rain so we would not experience back flow from the septic. Can you just picture the scene?
Like you posted, God really doesn't need any of my suggestions, plea bargaining, tears, and other crazy things I did to stop the rain to show what HE is capable of doing. We haven't had a back flow problem, it has quit raining, and in the worse of the rain, the girls were at the church doing a project. Sometimes I forget just how BIG our God is.
Learning how NOT to give God suggestions has been an ongoing battle for me. I've gotten much better about just saying, "It's up to you Lord. You do it and I'm not going to offer my 'help'". Thanks for the reminder that He really does know best.
See you in 6 days!!!!
Wow. Just spoke straight to my heart and my tendency as a wife. I so think I have good ideas and solutions for my husband, when all the while, it's just not what God is doing. I stand convicted. He is speaking to me and I am listening. Unfortunately, it has taken 21 years for me to hear it.
Thank you.
Praying that I can apply this truth to a situation that seems like a train wreck waiting to happen.
God bless.
I can't believe the chord that these words struck in my misunderstanding heart. I don't understand why I'm fighting cancer for the 2nd time at 26. But, Jesus loves me this I KNOW. I know that this is for his glory and not for any other reason. He is God, and He is good.
Clueless as to His ways right now....and thankful that I am...because I know, very soon, I shall yet praise Him (Psalm 42)
Thanks for the reminder.
There seems to be a Bible lesson in everything my kids say! I love it.
Love you, Beth.
Thank you so much Beth! what you said spoke to where I've been in the last little while. In addition to Psalm 23:1, God also directed me to Deut.30:11-14, Romans 15:13, Matt.16:24, and Psalm 91:1 early this new year. I don't know the what's, why's or wherefores, but I'm trying to stand in what He says to me and about me in His word. And your scripture from Romans 8:28 just seems to give me more confirmation to remain as I am already. Not easy when my son adhd/bipolar) has a physical condition (benign intracranial hypertension/ptc) that's been largely in a "holding pattern" for the last 3 years, and all of a sudden he had an onslaught of bad headaches from a week ago Thursday thru this past Tuesday, and that's been out of the norm of the last three years of the monthly migraine.
He saw the neuro-opthalmologist the 14th, and he said there's no new optic nerve damage or apparent new pressure, yet. If he has another headache, this week, the doc said he might order spinal tap to see what his csf fluid level currently is. It's been a couple years since his last one; but I'm waiting on God and leaning heavily on Him. Please keep my 9 year old son in your prayers.
Thank you
Diane
I could use this message for myself ( Lord knows I need it ),
but I soooo wish the sweet people in Haiti could read this and know it is for them.
Dear Sister
At 1:31 pm on January 16 you made your post. It is now exactly 5:31 pm after I read it and am responding with tears streaming down my face. My heart hurts so much for you because yours is broken. I weep with you.
You have so many questions and seeking desperately for a Word from Him. How I wish I could wrap my arms around you and fall on my face with you to seek the answers you are looking for. All I know is this...He alone IS the answer.
He does care. Truly He does. You continue to cry out to Him. And then listen for that still, small voice. Tell Him everything you are feel and are thinking. He is BIG enough to take it. He knows already, Dear One, so you might as well speak it to Him.
I will covet to pray for you and with you. God is reaching out to you to let you know He loves you. He has heard every cry. He has caught every one of your tears. They are precious to Him. YOu are precious to Him.
I pray you begin to feel, sense, and see the peace of God which transcends all understanding.
I love you in Christ Jesus.

Thank you, Beth. I know Christ is speaking through you, thank you for being obedient to Him and for sharing with us! It feels like a healing balm on my heart.
Beth,
I know that in all likelihood, you won't even see these words. But I do want to think you. My husband and I are on day 369 of unemployment. And though we both has managed to stay fairly positive and we've both witnessed God work in amazing ways, I still find myself constantly trying to make sense of things. I should know better. Thank you, and Jackson, for the words from Him. "Tina, that's just now what I'm doing. Trust me."
With much love
...and thanks for the John 13:7 reference too. It's yet another confirmation, to me, that God is directing me to keep doing what I'm doing(walk in obedience, pray, wait, *repeat*). The challenge to this for me is in not giving in to anxiety, which as a single parent is tough enough.
I've been trying to help God in looking/finding a mate, since I am about 38 and still single. God knows what He is doing. It is the waiting for God that is the hardest. My helping is not working, but have I learned that? NO!
WOW! I SO needed to hear these words today! I am in the middle of a situation and I am constantly praying...actually in truth... telling...God what to do and why that would be the best way!
Man do I still have a LOT to learn! Thank you Lord for not being finished with me yet!
Donna (the mom of twin boys)
Oh my! This is exactly where I am right now!!!
God and I have been dialoguing about this for several weeks. I constantly assume I know the direction God is leading and based on those assumptions, I run on ahead on my own power and resources.
After struggling for a while and trying to force a square peg in a round hole, I can hear God saying to me, "Child, this is not what I'm doing." Isaiah 55:8 has been ringing in my head for days.
Thanks for letting me see I am not alone in this!
Oh, wow can I ever relate. We tend to want to micro-manage God, don't we?:) I have to tell myself wait, listen. I so want to be in charge but The MASTER knows best!! Thank you Beth.
Oh, yes, sweet sister in Christ, I get that. My sweet littl family and I just moved to a new town (well mostly new, we were stationed here before, Air Force), I had to wake up this morning and conciously tell God I'm giving this day up to Him. My agenda is strong within me and it tries to wrestle with the Holy Spirit in me. Giving it up often is much needed.
Oh Beth (and little Jackson) thank you for sharing this message. I have been struggling with this for the last year regarding my 19yr old son, Joshua. "God, why don't You do it this way with Joshua? How about this God, this might help?!" But how clearly I just heard God say to me, "But Sherrie, that is not what I'm doing with Joshua! Let Me work out My plan for Joshua. You do not realize now what I'm doing, but later you will understand." Thank you Beth for conveying God's message to me. But....waiting for L.A.T.E.R. is reeeeeaaaaallllyyyy HARD!
Oh, Beth! I so needed this today. I am reeling, emotionally and spiritually, from the events happening around me in my life. In November, I miscarried what would have been our third child, in the midst of some other health problems. I forced the praise for God out of my mouth through the situation, but I certainly didn't feel it. Then a very close friend of mine thought she was miscarrying her fourth child right after Christmas. I prayed and prayed for her and felt like she was having a boy that God told me he would use mightily. I was sure she and that baby would be fine. She miscarried on New Year's Eve. I began questioning if I could even trust myself to hear God's voice. Yesterday I found out my brother and his wife of one year were expecting their first child. Today I found out he took her to the ER, nearly had to rush her into the OR and they likely are miscarrying as well. I've been walking around in a fog all day just feeling numb, feeling that anxiety in my chest tightening more and more. I was crying out to God in my soul, "Do you even hear me? Are you even listening?" And then you write, "Maybe it's not that God isn't listening. Maybe it's just that what we keep suggesting is not exactly what He's doing. And, if that's so, what He's doing can only be better and more effectual than what we think we'd do in His place."
This lesson....it hurts. This trust is pushing deep through what I can't understand and feel frightened to give over. It's not easy...this trusting. But thank you, for being the words of God to me tonight. He IS listening and He's doing even more than I can imagine. I just don't know what it is yet.
I love you, Beth! Thank you!
You have no idea how hard I am fighting Him right now. I have heard this exact words this week! Its not my plan thats important, He doesnt have to do what I want Him to do, infact He probably wont anyway! I have to rearrange my thinking to say He is in control and is already working all this for good. Therefore I can rest and catch my breath because He is working every minute of every day even though I cant see it!
Thank you so much! And I hope you are recovering well!
YESSSSSS!!!!!!
I won't forget this...
"Thats not what I'm doing."
Perfect. Perfect. Perfect.

Dear Sweet Anonymous (1:31PM)
You are surrounded with a blog full of Siesta's who have also gone through seasons of dark moments. We uplift eachother with words and prayers that are filtered out into this world we live in. I will be praying for you daily!!! Prayer is so much more than reciting words. It's talking with God about everything in your life, from the little things to the big things.
Read Isaiah 65:24 in your Bible.
I had a season and time where I needed to GET MY MIND RIGHT so that GOD could do a work in my life. I found the answer in my life manual. B I B L E!!
The only One Who can enter our hearts and transform our minds is God.
My brother said it perfectly to me.
Fancy philosophers can't do it. Self-help gurus can't do it. Our hard work can't do it. God must change our minds in every detail (don't expect it to happen overnight--it takes time).
You aren't a passive part of the mind renewal process. First, you must invite God to do His Work. Then, once you have "learned the truth that is in Jesus...there must be a spiritual renewal of your thoughts and attitudes" (Eph. 4:21,23)
The scripture in Romans 12:2 helped me to do just that.
"But let God transform you into a new person by changing the way you think. Romans 12:2
I use a PRIORITY TREE each morning as I wake up.
Who is at the top of your tree?
He will give you all you need from day to day if you live for him and make the Kingdom of God your primary concern.
Matthew 6:33
Next time you write our your priorities, make sure you put God at the top.

This really hits home with me. Thank you for the verses and the encouragement. I am in a season of learning how to truly trust God. I needed to read this post tonight. Thank you.
I'm fairly speechless after reading this post, but not so much so that I can't say: You cannot imagine how much I needed these words. You are truly speaking a balm over my soul with this truth. Thank you so much for your obedience to share what God puts on your heart. I needed this scripture today.
WOW!!! Is all I have to say. God Bless
Please pray for me and the siestahs who will join me as I lead our first Beth Moore study!
Beth, Thank you so much for this post. It is amazing how God can use our playtime and some blocks to teach us some of life's lessons. I needed to hear that so much. My daughter who had a baby to die in May found out Thursday that her sister-n-law was havig a girl. This sister-n-law told my daughter when she was pregant that she wasn't suppose to have the first girl and she just "happened" to get pregant a few months after my grandaughter died. I know God is going to give them a baby LATER! It is so hard hard to watch and wait for that LATER. But it is now and LATER is coming. Thanks again.
Gosh Beth. What powerful statements. God has shown me Romans 8:28 for over a year now. I found the verse typed out on a small piece of paper in my laundry room. So I taped it to the dryer and have memorized it while doing the laundry. Funny thing is I had to have typed it out a long time ago. How on earth did it pop up in the laundry room over a year ago when my sister-in-law was struggling for her life with cancer? Strange.
My brother lost his wife and my niece lost her mother. And through all of it God says He works all things for the good... It doesn't seem to say He works all things for "good" but says "for the good". Hard to see in some instances what "for the good" could be. But I DO trust Him.
What's even more interesting is that my husband just said a few weeks ago that while at work in his office he felt the Lord telling him "I'm doing a new thing". I can't remember the reference but you may know the verse in the Bible that says I am doing a new thing, don't you perceive it... or something close to that. I keep thinking," Lord, how can You weave all these bad things into something 'for the good'". Like you, I have alot of ideas and suggestions that God could certainly use or at least entertain. But I am learning, practicing, trying to BREATH. You know "Be still and Know that I am God" I keep reminding myself that it's HIS PLANS for my life and not mine. HIS PLANS for my niece and brother and not my own. HIS PLANS for my 18 year old son and not my own etc.
My 18 year old just flew to California this past Thursday. He is 3,000 miles from his Momma. He'll be home on Tuesday but it's the first time he's ever been gone this far for this long. And I have been worried and sometimes a little frightful. Especially when he didn't answer my text message in 2 seconds. I am wondering why this opportunity for him to go to California would come now in the middle of a stressful time in our family's life. You know, just one more thing. I knew I had to let him go but what could the Lord be doing? And I ask myself "Why does my faith in God come with such anxiety?"
So your verse on John 13:7 is a word of encouragement to me. Even if sometimes the LATER is when I get to see Him face to face.
Thanks, Beth!
thank you, dear beth. thank you also all you commentors. i was browsing down the comments and one just popped out at me. i was just ranting to my husband at how sad i am, how sad i've been, and how sick i am of it. maybe i should change my approach and let God be God, and me be man. i will not stop praying for those things that i'm beggin him for, but i have to let go and walk in the joy that has been stolen from me for the past 12 months. i want to find joy again...
I needed to hear this tonight. Thank you.
I am so grateful for your words on this day. They hit the nail on the head!
I am doing the revised, updated version of Breaking Free right now in my Wednesday night bible study at Madison church of Christ outside Nashville. Your words are awesome and God is awesome!!
Just wanted you to know where your words were reaching!
Thanks again and be blessed!
Love and blessings,
Suzanne :)
*hand raised high*-Me, me, I do that with God, too. Because life hurts, and we don't get it. But hooray, we can trust the God who does. Thank you for the reminder!! ;-)Blessings to you today!
Beth, how in the world????? I have to believe you get "direct" hits from our Lord just for your Siestas- I agree with so many other of your responders- your darling story about your time with Jackson and how he led you to an encouragement for us, is truly an amazing blessing. I was just sure that message was sent, just for my circumstance. God bless you and yours dear Sister in Christ.
Oh sweet Beth! What a fresh word upon my heart. You see as the Step-Mother of my three beautiful God-given children we speak of this verse so often. The kids who have endured so much at the hands of divorce now find themselves on the other side blessed with a loving family once again. They often question if this was always Gods plan for their lives and we speak of Gods ability to work it all out for the good! Praise His holy name that he wise enough to NOT take my advice. I am always so in awe of that which is weaving together and working out for good in my life!
In Him,
Andrea
Thank you, Beth and Jackson.....just like everyone else, this was a lesson I needed to hear today!!!! My oldest daughter is not walking with the Lord, and I was telling Him how I thought He should go about reaching her!! Can you imagine....me-telling the Creator how to do something??? As if He needs my advice!!!! I did stop myself, apologized, and then told Him that I will trust in whatever plan He has for her life!!!! And that I will be patient and wait on HIS time.
Thanks again & God bless!!

This is so encouraging! We are waiting (and suggesting, but trying not to!) and have no answers - but fight every day to hold on to the Truth of Romans 8:28.
Praying for you~
Jennifer
Great point today about God working it all even the criminally horrid stuff together, LATER!
Am I tottally off the wall if I say that I dont give God suggestions? I do pray often for help but I usually think my suggestions wouldnt be near as good as His, am I a minority here? This same subject was brought out in biblestudy this week, so it is obviously on our collective minds,..
Loved this post. Just loved it. My grandson, Jonah, is very near the age of Jackson. He got a builders set for Christmas. Unfortunately for us, he lives very far away, but our daughter tells us that the operative lessons have been distinguishing between what he wants and what he needs. I can talk to God all day about that lesson!
Romans 8:28 is one of the verses I pray I'll remember next weekend. Thank you for giving me another visual. It's so true. It's SO true. It's. So. True!
Love,
Angie xoxo
I wasn't expecting that to turn into a God moment! How awesome?! Amen!
Well this one hits close to home. For years I had suggested to the Lord that my husband and I needed a child. I finally said O.K. Lord you know what's best and settled for being mother to a lot of Mission Raleigh kids.
Guess what? At age 46 I have become a "mom" to a beautiful 16 year old girl. Her family became homeless recently and her mom sent her to live with us.
I am still not sure what He is doing but I am coming along for the ride. And it is turning out to be a wild one and I am loving every minute of it!
I sure am glad He didn't listen to me and did it His way in His time.
Love you siesta mama!
Mercy alive, Miss Beth, this one hit home for me tonight. We are approaching the year anniversaries of some very unpleasant things in our lives...situations where we are still waiting to see how God is going to work it all for good. I've spent a lot of this year in specific prayer about what I would like to see God do. While He has been teaching me about boldly approaching His throne, I needed this reminder that HE IS GOD and I am not.
You know, I always heard that when you don't think God is answering you that you just "do" until He does. I have done and done and now I am wondering if you're right...He is not doing it that way. Hmmmm...maybe that's why I'm at a standstill.
Later just seems so far away. It's that hideous word spoken by parents who never could remember what later consisted of. *sigh* Is it later yet?????
Oh, the things He teaches us through those young'uns in our lives!
I blogged about this same thing this past week (although not nearly as eloquently as you)! Thanks for that John 13:7 reference. Gave me goosebumps (or chicken skin as they say here in Hawaii)!
Love y'all so much!
God gave me this poem this morning:
I look into the future,
I don't know what I see.
The path is very murky.
I need some clarity.
Complicated issues
Race inside my head.
Where love and joy and peace should be, There's anxiety and dread.
I know with all that's in me,
That worry is not God's will.
He holds my life inside His hand,
He says to me, "Be still.
Be still and know that I am God.
Your life is precious to me.
Trust in who you know I am.
I ask you to believe.
Even when the waters roar
And the mountains shake.
I am in the midst of it; I make no mistakes.
Your job is to acknowledge Me
When going through a trial.
I am your only refuge,
The only One that is worthwhile.
Even though I cannot see the path that lies ahead.
I'll take one more step of faith and trust in what He said.
So I'll take a breath, close my eyes and lift up one more prayer.
Knowing that He hears me;
On Him I'll cast my care.
What an amazing reminder for the season I am in. Great verses to add to my memory bank and rest in when I do not understand!
Thanks for the blessing.
Janae
Another timely post! While we wait for our Revelation materials, my ladies and I are watching a little Louie Giglio - he told the story of Joseph for us Wednesday and talked about the big picture. I need to hear the lesson over and over and over and over again. Thank you.
Dearest Beth;
God has once again used you as His very tangible voice to me. Thank you.
I just needed a reminder that He is in Control of my situation and does not need my help to accomplish His will.
Be Blessed Beth.
I have a tendency to be such a temper tantrum producing child of God if I don't get my way...I will just sit down on the side of the road, cross my arms, pout and say 'I'm not gonna do it!'
Oh how I need to learn to trust Him more.
Beth, this is exactly what God has been teaching me the last year or so. I am learning more and more to leave things in His hands and trust Him with them. When I want to say something to someone about how he could get his life together, I often hear the Lord saying "shut up, shut up, shut up". I'm finally getting the message and also learning to pray without giving Him my suggestions of how to make things better. It's a hard lesson to learn but I hope I'm getting better at it. I have found that when I can do this, it is such a relief and a real load off my shoulders. If I could just learn to do it at all times, I would have a much easier life. Thanks for the words of encouragement.
I don't even know what in the world I am doing at times so how can I begin to know all that God is doing? I'm reminded of the words "Let go and let God". That's my desire but still trying to hold on to the reins. Pray!!!!
"AMEN & AMEN" - now I can get through this day with a spring in my step and a smile for others in my heart. Thank you, Beth AND Jackson!! Suzann
Ah Beth, I am forever telling God what to do. But I think I've heard Jackson's words so many times by now that I have learned to shut up a little. I don't think I'm offering quite as many suggestions these days as I did at one time. And it's not easy. I've been sitting on my hands about one particular thing lately, trying to keep my mouth shut both to God and my husband. But the other day I figuratively jumped up off my hands and all my suggestions came hurling out my mouth. Yes, hurling. It wasn't pretty. When will I ever learn? and sure enough, afterwards I felt a gentle shaking of the head from my Lord, and a soft, "Kay, that's not what I'm doing and I'll thank you to keep quiet for now."
bless you for your precious insight! Can't wait till this Friday!!!!!!
I so don't understand what God is doing right now!
When is "later????"
My oldest is a puzzle boy. He outgrew the "cow fits in the cow spot" puzzles very early. When I was trying to teach him to do his first "big" puzzle, I kept explaining about finding the edge pieces first. "No, no Jacob, we don't need that castle piece right now, we haven't found all of the edge pieces and put the frame together yet," said I. Then he quit asking me about pieces. I assumed he was finding those so important edge pieces. The next time I looked up, he had the whole inside of the puzzle finished and I was still looking for edge pieces. He said, "Mama, that's not how I do a puzzle." Big lessons learned! #1....My way isn't the only right way (OOOOH that tasted bad coming out of my mouth) #2...Do not force your OCD tendencies and various and assorted hangups onto your child! #3...God has purposed this child to look at the big picture and take action. By the way...he's on his way to seminary soon with plans for international missions. Praise God!!!
I'm in a "thing" that fits what you said perfectly.
Later. I like that. I've had God tell me to "quit worrying - I am taking care of you." If we would just quit the worrying...and figuring out. He's always taking care of us.
Amen Mama Beth.
I needed to hear this. I have been having a bit of a pity party cause I can't be at the Siesta Memory Celebration...ok bummed is more like it. But God has been saying no and well He must have a plan for me to stay here and I will understand later.
Why is later so hard to get anyway. God must get tired of hearing me suggest my ideas to fix things.
Great post and love hearing about you playing with Jackson.
love and blessings
Tammy
Thank you for your anointed post! You are a wonderful grandma and a beautiful godly woman. Thank you for encouraging our hearts!
Hugs
p.s. I have a craving for greenbean casserole - "Beth Moore makes me hungry" :)
Ouch.
And yet--thank you.
currently taking Breaking Free (revised - oh thank you for revising it). I went into the study Monday morning past with a list of things I was ready for God to free me of - a. anger, b. pride, c. critical spirit -- and turned around Thursday same week to see God is working on something else, something BIGGER I hadn't seen or for that matter hadn't enough tissues for these weeping eyes!!
Aren't we ridiculous sometimes?? Little micromanagers of lives - and yet missing out on heaven's glory when we do that! Thankful God doesn't pick up his marbles and stop playing !
Stef
Romans 8 in its entirety has been on my heart for two weeks. That was the theme of Passion, whether or not Louie said so. Another verse that I often pair with Romans 8:28 is Psalm 37:4 "delight yourself also in the Lord and he will give you the desires of your heart."
It's not that He will first give us what we want right now...the desires that we currently have. It's more that he will GIVE us DESIRES...He will change them, put new ones in us! All things work together for good to those who love Him and are CALLED ACCORDING TO HIS PURPOSE....He uses us to fulfill His purpose. It goes back to God always getting the glory - no matter what. He is in control.
How marvelous!?!?!!
and...out of the mouths of babes. My mother nanny's a 4 year old and has for all but a month of his life - his mother is a teacher - and he is part of the family. So often the things he says touch my heart because they are sweet, yes, but also because of his sincerity, his discernment, and his simplicity in speaking the Word of God thought he might not know it.
w.o.w.
Needed it. If I'm honest, I must admit I have let myself think things like, "Is He real? Or is this all make believe? Because if He's real - how can he even stand to look at Haiti and all these innocent children?" And then had all the feelings of guilt that come after a thought like that in the face of the personal miracles I've seen in my life. What a horrible, no-account Christian am I to have a Savior die for me and still have these doubts? Asking *again* for faith, wisdom and understanding. Taught 4 & 5 year-olds about asking for wisdom this morning. :) Ironic, yes?
Great post! He will do His thing and it will be immeasurably more than we could have suggested. I needed that reminder today ;-) J
Be patient...be still...always attentively listening...my child...there is much for you to learn.
Thanks, Beth...I so needed to hear this right now!
I did not take time to read the other comments before mine, so this is probably redundant. But...this is so in tune with what I felt I was hearing today in church as we prayed for the dear people in Haiti. God is with them. He loves them. He can bring His own wonderful, beyond our imagination results from these tragedies. Even just seeing the many people reaching out to Haiti, sending contributions, praying, donating goods, time, efforts....that is ALL from God! All good is from God. Amen. Thank you, Beth, for the scripture and the reminder that goes with all of this.
I am so thankful we can trust Him completely. When I get to Heaven, after I have spent the first thousand years or more balling my eyes out, face down under the presence of God; I will ask Him all those help me understand questions.
Somehow, I don't think it will take Him too long to explain. Kind of like He does now. When He communicates to my heart, it is like there are several sentences in a second. An entire picture communicated in just a moment with a gentle touch. Then, awe and amazement.
He is so good! I am so thankful that we can praise Him in all things and be radiant with joy, without a shadow of shame to darken our face!
No sweeter name tnan the name of Jesus!
Hi Beth,
I love this. I was just telling my husband last night that in I think it was A Beautuful Mind Bible Study, that I learned that when we start telling God how we want our prayers answered we lose HOPE, because we are not trusting him to answer, in his time and his way (I hope I didn't totally mess up the message) but it really made sense to me, and I think relates to what you are saying....LATER
I will have 2 of my Grands tonight,
Thank you! : )
Ok, Beth, you're not supposed to read someone elses journal! This is probably one of the most awesome lessons I have heard in a while. Thank you so much for sharing your insight.

God's timing is so perfect-and I'm eternally grateful that you have a gift of sharing in such a profound way! Jackson must've been listening, too!
I think I'll add Jackson's words to my 'wall of wisdom' in my study!
Thanks to all of you!
Love & blessings!

Oh my word this HIT HOME for me! Drill it in Lord.....drill it home (no pun intended!!)
Leave it to our Siesta Mama, not to leave a block unturned or a bolt unscrewed! Very applicable indeed.....A Word In Due Season!!
Much love and BIG Hugs Beth!

Oh my goodness did that resonate with me.....It seems I usually try and HELP God with things.....I know that I know He is big enough to do it without my help, but nevertheless, go right ahead and try to help anyway......I love this post.
Blessings for a great week,
Bible Bunny in NO MI
Mama Beth,
What a word of encouragement and hope!!! Thank you so much for taking the time to share this with us. Our family, too, is going through some very difficult times. My Dad (58) has been having intense back pain, and an MRI last week showed a large white "mass" near his lower spine...We are awaiting the biopsy results now, but needless to say are very scared. Also, the day before his biopsy, his employer terminated his position. Depending on Jesus for everything now to say the least.
Thank you for the reminder of God's sovereignty and perfect plan. He is indeed up to something- May we have our eyes and ears open to hear Him and believe Him to be working all things for the good. Later we will understand.
Don't you just love how God uses children to teach us His ways. He uses my children all the time to get my attention. Maybe it is because He knows I get so wrapped up in parenting that I don't stop and get quiet long enough to listen to Him. Thanks for a great lesson!
So often I am sure I am doing what the Lord wants. And usually I am...but in an entirely different way than I thought...His way! So glad He is in control...not me!
Blessings
