So, Which Type Are You?
UPDATE ON WEDNESDAY MORNING: One of my favorites ever. Y'all kill me. You just kill me. I am watching these closely and you may look forward to a post hopefully later this evening or tomorrow morning on my findings and reflections concerning movers versus immovers here in the imaginary city of Siestaville. You will not want to miss this life changing message. Until then, I'd simply like to say that some of you don't get enough sleep. I just brought in over 200 comments that were written during the night. As for me, I am currently spending my night hours putting on extra jammies because I'm cold then taking them off one piece at a time because I'm hot. I don't want to talk about it. I just want to say that I'm annoyed. Last thing: don't get worried if you don't see your comments posted for a couple of hours. I've got to go to the back doctor today and will be out for pockets of time throughout the day. I promise to get all of them in by afternoon. You're my bffs right this minute. Even you movers.
ORIGINAL POST:
OK, Y'all. After 31 years of marriage, Keith and I just experienced a FIRST. Remember that beautiful Christmas tree he had his nephews deliver to me while he was out of town after my surgery? Well, ever since we got home from Passion, I've been hinting about how that tree sure does look dry and those needles sure are piling up on the carpet. I adore the Christmas season and love all the decorations but by 12:01 AM on New Year's Day, while the neighbors do their bottle rockets, I'm obsessing about getting my house back in order. Normally, Keith is MIA this time a year and I, like the Hoss I pretend to be (if that's a bad word, I don't know it so forgive me), haul that tree right out of my house single handedly and drag it to the curb. But alas, I presently have two strikes against independence: 1) a persistent large herniated disk and 2) only four weeks out of surgery and can't lift more than ten pounds for four more interminable weeks.
You can probably imagine that my hints are about as subtle as my biker friend who likes to sit on the front row at church wearing intense black leather and about 65 pounds of chains. I love him because he loves Jesus. And I get a kick out of the novelty and wonder if God does, too. So, anyway, Keith got on his heavy gloves and grabbed that Christmas tree by its wilting throat, leaving that typical four-inch deep train of pine needles. He walked back in the house and I said in my meekest, most apologetic voice, "Honey, did you know I can't sweep either? I'm not supposed to do that side to side motion." He got the broom. I'm pretty sure he liked me better last night when he was watching that deer show all by himself and I was blogging.
Of course, true to form, none of this is my point. Nor is it our big first I wrote to tell you about. What happened is this: he had to move the furniture around to drag out the tree and when he put it all back, since I could offer him no assistance, he ended up putting a table in the wrong place. It was one of those tables that goes behind your couch. I think there's a name for it but goodness knows I don't know what it is. Instead of putting it where it had been since our remodel, Keith shoved it against the wall. I stood in the den staring at it for the longest time and finally said, "Hey, Sweetie, did you realize you put the table in the wrong place?"
Him, squinting at it like it was a hog under a distant deer feeder: "I knew something was off but I didn't know what."
Me: "You're not going to believe this but I think I like it."
Him, staring at me in disbelief, wondering if it could be the low estrogen. Can he really trust anything I have to say right now? Finally, he breaks the silence: "Uh, I think I do, too."
And, so, we left it there.
First time in 31 years.
I have never one time - I said never one time - rearranged the furniture. When we moved into this house 25 years ago, the movers put the furniture down and I have not scooted around one single chair since. When Melissa was graduating from high school and we were having guests over to our house to celebrate, I asked Keith if I could get some new den furniture...then proceeded to put the new couch exactly where the old couch had been. The coffee table exactly where the old coffee table had been. And so forth.
Three and a half years ago we remodeled. Our friend, Vicky, was in charge of the entire project because I don't care what color paint goes where nor would I know a silk pillow from polyester. She positioned the furniture and I've haven't moved a stick of it since. I mean, why mess it up?
Until today.
We actually rearranged a piece of furniture. I'm so excited. It's only one but I feel a sudden recklessness. I may march right into the master bathroom and change out the decorative hand towels with the gold tassels. I am feeling dangerous. Edgy.
So, what about you, Siestas? Are you the type that loves to rearrange furniture and spontaneously redecorate a corner of your home? Or are you like me and once it's there, it's not going anywhere? And either way, what do you think that says about us??
I can't wait. You're so much fun.
UPDATE HALF HOUR IN: OK, this is a blast. I'm going to do an approximate tally in a day or two and tell you how we shake out on this life-altering issue here in Siestaville.
NEW UPDATE AN HOUR IN: Travis just sent me a two-word text: "Sofa Table." TRAVIS told me that. My worship leader had to tell me it was a sofa table. I've had it. I'm going to get furniture therapy.

My furniture is in totally the same place it's been for the 25 years we've lived in our house. And I feel exactly about my house, colors, painting as you do. It says we're glad we have the whole bodly of Godly women to help me with such things! And that we have different 'bents'for sure! When someone helps me with such things I love it...but I don't think of it on my own. :o) Go Beth!!!
When I go into my friends houses that change things seasonly (or weekly!) I am delighted, and it makes me smile.... :o)
my husband always wants to rearrange, but i have no desire...maybe too lazy...but when he does, i am always there to tell where things don't go...i admire people who like to change things up...me, i like things status quo
I love changing my furniture around, now how I done it recently, nope! But when the Christmas tree is up, I had to rearrange the living room but the stuff went back to its place. I did add a piece of furniture- a computer armoire and removed a chair. I put the chair in my bedroom in place of the tv that was there and will place another chair where the computer used to sit! Voila' I will have a reading nook in my bedroom where I can watch the sun come up in the morning and talk to God!!!!! Finally a sitting area in my bedroom, never thought I would have one! Oh, and repainting is a wonderful wonderful redecorating touch. I love to repaint rooms!
Oh my goodness. I am the most unconcerned home decorator since Annie from the movie Annie Get Your Gun. I love to go in beautiful homes and for a few moments I dream of what it would be like to live in a home picture perfect or teeming with some unique theme. Since every piece of furniture in my home is passed down from someone or somewhere I'm trying to come up with a "theme" title; that could be scary. But during a season of wishing for what I couldn't do God Blessed my socks off when 5 or 6 of my sons friends were over (20ish year olds), and they all gave up some awesome hangout 'cause they wanted to come to "The Vickery's". They love our home because it's just that....a home. I've never been overcome with that desire for a front page magazine house again. I love living in reality. Being thankful for the home I have is a nice place to be also.
I'm the same way! I admire it when other people do it but I always want to ask them, "So, what made you think to do that?"
Now, mind you, I'll change up an outfit fifteen different ways before I retire it but the furniture? Uh, no.
I love to rearrange! It helps me to think! Sometimes I have to put it exactly back where it was because well that is where it fits the best.(military family & so our stuff is moved a bit). I move the small appliances in the kitchen and I am really going to put myself out there-when I go to someone house I rearrange their stuff in my head. :)
I know it is not really a good thing, but i do not like changes. I rarely change furniture and if by some strange chance i do, it stresses me completely. Glad that you and Keith agreed. Maybe you will be inspired to change something else.
Oh, HONEY. My friend Donna came over in 1997 when I added the sunroom to my house. She arranged the wall of white bookshelves with my treasures (books, mostly) and I literally made little pencil marks under everything so that when I dusted I could put it back in the right places. I have no clue about things like scale, color, etc. I'm 100% word-oriented (thank goodness the Lord has allowed me to be a book editor!) My furniture is the SAME, it's in the same places, and I love it that way. Who needs change?
I'm terrible about figuring out where to put furniture, too. I just have no clue so go for the most open looking positioning...
And, isn't that table you moved called a high table? I'm really, really not sure but we have one (not behind a couch - but up against a wall!) and that's what my MIL callled it...
Actually there seems to be only one way to make all our furniture fit into our small living room, but I change the knick-knacks, small framed pictures, candles, etc ALL the time so I can feel creative. Our bedroom STAYS the same so I don't trip over anything when I get up in the dark to use the potty. Dining room gets a change of table cloth and centerpiece seasonally. You get the picture....furniture stays PUT but accessories are always on the move.
I actually LOVE to rearrange furniture but because of the apparantly too large or too numerous pieces I like to buy, I can always only wedge it in one way and then it has to stay there. My mom moves hers around about once a month! ha! I do like to decorate though and am always carting a wall hanging from one room to another or tearing up a flower arrangement to make a new one.
The only room I rearrange is my bedroom. I think of so many ways that would make my room look bigger. Now the rest of the house I can not touch because my mother loves how she has it. But in the 44 years that we have lived in the house I think that my mom is like sister Beth. New furniture just replaces the old furniture and is put in the same place as the old furniture.
Now my sister she changes furniture and rearrages it constantly and the painting, oh don't even get me started on the painting :)
How funny! I am a leave it there forever type girl and my best friend is throw some new paint up and move the kids rooms around every weekend type!
After 11 years of marriage, my husband is finally getting it. One year in to the marriage I came home, climbed in the bed and asked "when did we move that picture to that wall." Only to discover that he has moved several pictures around to new spots. Did I mention that he doesn't like to put holes in the wall so he didn't bother to reposition the nails. You can only imagine how long I left the pictures that way and told him next time I wanted his decorating advice, I would let him know. Every now and then he still gets a little "decorative" and tries something new. Let's just say we are still waiting for that first!!
Let's put it this way: my regular visitors sometimes think they came into the wrong house. :-)
Way to live on the wild side, Beth!
All my furniture stays put.....forever.
It may mean that I am consistent, loyal, and rock-solid.
Or it may just mean I'm boring.
Becky
Same place always. Same paint on the wall too. I am thankful for what I have and not bothered in the slightest that my home stays exactly right where it is forever. Time management is crucial in my life. Married for 17 years, 3 boys. When the boys move out, I am hoping to remodel everything (why? 3 boys..please)and then leave it all in the exact same place till I go to heaven. :)
I can so relate to ready to be done with the tree thing right after Christmas. I love Christmas but once it's done I want my house back! I usually keep things in the same place but I'm always dreaming of how I can change things with the new peice of furniture I want to buy and can't afford. Wah..(smile)
Love to change things but seldom do because the house doesn't cooperate! Your house may never be the same. Have fun!

I never move my furniture. My mom used to say, "If it ain't broke, don't fix it!" I have too much furniture for my house.
I'm so pathetic I have to see the furniture set up just like it is going to be in my house. I just can't see it in my house. I like to sew but I can't look at a fabric and see it as a dress, shirt or anything.
Husband doesn't want to move funiture ever... wife does. Husband is a wonderful, loving, hunk of a guy.. wife puts up with funiture in the same location.
Truly we are both scared to death of color. Our walls are all white. When our one son became old enough to notice he would say "Why is everything white around here?"
So we decided to paint this spring. After several trips to the store for paint chips we sat Sat. on our bedroom floor utterly paralized with fear sorting through them... maybe the Lord will return before spring.
This is so funny! We've moved 27 times in 37 years of marriage (Air Force and a second career) and I think I moved furniture about that many times during each move! My husband sat alert for a week at a time during one assignment and after being gone one time, he came home to the house completely rearranged--after all, I had a whole week to do it! His first comment was "it's a good thing I'm not blind...I would kill myself tripping over something!"
We laugh about that quite often!
Nope. Stuff stays where we stick it. Got new furniture in 2005. It's right where it was on the day they delivered it. The only moving that happens is when we have to make room for the Christmas tree. But it all goes back just the way it was pre-tree. Maybe when we hit 31 years, we'll go crazy too and move a SOFA TABLE (that's the word you were looking for, I think), but we're only at 27 years. Gotta few years to decide where to move things.
Melana (who is so stinking excited to see you WITH MOOSE, in 2 weeks!!!!)
I am also a "never move the furniture" person. My mother in law makes fun of me all the time because she rearranges constantly. I just don't care. And I don't want to walk around at night and stump my toe! See you in a couple of weeks!

Oh my gosh...I can't even imagine not moving furniture. I move something regularly, even if it is a picture. I re-arranged for Christmas, I'll re-arrange taking down Christmas and by spring, I'll have to do something completely different again. My house is very small and quaint so sometimes all I can do is change a color so then I paint.
We moved to this house 15 years ago, aside from moving end tables to make room for the Christmas tree, everything stays in the same place.
Today is the last day of Christmas, tomorrow is Epiphany - it all comes down tomorrow and the furniture will go back in it's place. Maybe it's a rut, I don't know. All I know is - as long as I am not in a spiritual rut, I don't care.
Happy New Year to you and your family and the Living Proof staff.
PS - I am working on my new memory verse...
Nope...we don't move furniture either. We may talk about it but in the end it stays right in the same spot. I have no idea what that says about us but we've been married 42 years, lived in several places but once the furniture is in, there it stays. Hummm.
I don't rearrange things very often. I really enjoy "purging" all of our STUFF every 3 months or so. Boy do my girls hate that when I do. Things always go "missing" :o) However, I'm going to have to decorate very soon and I'm a bit nervous! I was told by my sweetie last night that I have a week to come up with some paint colors for the new house. Also, many other decorating decisions I have to make. I'm feeling a little overwhelmed. So, I guess the answer to your questions is ... Not REally! I wish I could decorate and change things easily. However, I'm not great in the "change" department.
I'm just impressed that you liked where your hubby put the furniture when it usually goes somewhere else. I'm sure I would have made mine put it in the same spot as before.
Beth,
I actually decorate for a living, and ever since a child have been
arranging and rearranging. Sometimes I wonder if it is really the gift God blessed me with? Does making the home cozy qualify as a gift? I am not sure at all.
It drives my husband crazy!
More important...hope you are feeling better and better. Many
prayers for you and your family.
You are a bright light, and share your gift(s) so joyfully!
I like to change it up!! When our house was broken into, changing it up by repainting and re-arranging somehow took away the 'intrusion feel'....hard to explain, but it did help. It's theraputic (spelling?) my mom says. A stress reliever and if you can't afford to replace, rearranging can make it all seem new again! I don't like to do it very often, but when the mood hits? it's no holds barred!!! And as for those christmas decorations? the second the gifts are unwrapped, it's time to put them away...Ha, ha! One year, when I was still in my parents home, we literally put the tree up one morning and took it down that evening! We love christmas, love to decorate, but when it's done, it's done... Ha, ha
Praise the Lord for giving me such an understanding man who puts up with me!
Take Care and God Bless!
I drive my husband crazy because at least once a year I move the furniture around. I like the change and it is great for cleaning because you never know what you might find. I have young children and they are always losing toys, shoes, socks, etc.
Beth, are we doing another scripture memory challenge for 2010. I am memorizing scripture again this year and I loved the accountability.
Blessings,

I'm like you Beth. Once I find a way I really like it, it stays that way FOREVER!
This is so off subject, but what writing pen did you finally decide on? Just been wondering!
Jennifer
P.S. I start the revised Breaking Free on Thursday morning with a group of ladies. I CAN'T WAIT!!!
And I'm excited about getting to see you in Lutz, Florida in April!!!
I am known for rearrnaging the furniture!! I can't imagine NOT moving it every once ina while. In fact, I move furniture from one room and put it into another. How about that! Just the other day I put 3 pieces into 3 differnt rooms...all on the same day. It is my creative release, my chance to clean behind the couch, and makes me feel like I have something new without spending a penny. 30 years and my husband is still finding his way around a newly moved piece in the dark of the night.
I'm the kind that will leave it one way forEVER, but then when I get that wild hair, the whole room will be re-painted and rearranged within a month.
We moved into this house 3 yrs ago, I hated the wall colors and the carpet, yet I've nary changed a thing all this time. 2 months before Christmas, I decided it ALL needed to be painted/fixed up (even had my husband make us a farmhouse table for the kitchen) before I could put the tree up.
We worked like dogs, and we LOVE IT now. It will look like this for the next couple years I betcha.
(But much like the clothes, I will add and change up the 'accessories' around the house here and there. That's pretty fun too! Like recovering the dining room chairs, or changing out the pillows or candlesticks, you know?)
(I'm pretty sure it's called a 'sofa table' when that table sits behind the couch)
You should post a pic of the way it was and the new way... I bet it looks really good! :)
love you girl!
lavonda
OK...I can't resist this one since TODAY I was doing the same thing, always by myself, only with the (sorry) 'pre-lit' 9' Sam's version of a tree - and I did it. Along with my Sara Groves cd, Conversations...love it!
Then, the living room looked SOOOO empty after clearning out the red, gold, & green (my fav colors - again, sorry Amanda missed the Dec. post on fav. colors) that I had a fleeting moment of "What if I tried...." and it was time to go pick up Jake at school - oh well!
I have always been so disappointed in my decor talents because compared with my mom, who is a designer with a river of endless creativity even at 78! My parents moved their bed in the MIDDLE of their room with 7' pillars at each corner and a beautiful marbled dresser 'banking' the pillow end of the bed - AMAZING - but who does that and WHO does that a 50+ years of marraige?!?! HA!!! It really is absolutely gorgeous!!! Needless to say, I'm a creative thinker...but I just don't want to mess with it when it's all done. Hum... honestly I was just thinkin' this all through again today so your message cracked me up!
Sometimes, when my folks visit, they move things around. We don't mind...if we like it, we leave it, if we don't, we put it back and no one cares. Ha! I LOVE beauty, LOVE creativity but was so encouraged to hear your story - too funny!
Alas...my tree is still sitting in 4 dismembered parts on the living floor. My husband & son are rock climbing and I just went to pick up my daughter from snowboard club...WHEN does 24 start????
LOVE you girls!!! ;)
I think the name for that table is a sofa table. I love moving things around because it gives me a chance to really clean behind furniture that hasn't been moved for a while. I absolutely love change, and it satisfies that desire in me. But Keith ought to find comfort in the fact you haven't moved your furniture for a long time. That should mean you won't shuffle him out when you tire of him! LOL
Oh Beth...
I love this post so much for two reasons:
1. I KNEW EXACTLY WHAT THE "FIRST TIME EVER" thing was before you even got to it. I knew it was something to do with moving furniture! Love that we Siestas can learn so much about each other and begin to make predictions on outcomes and sometimes finish each other's sentences even though we may never meet face to face.
2. Second, it is just the topic itself...to move furniture or not to move furniture!
My mother was an avid furniture mover. In fact, it was more likely on any given day when we got home from school in the afternoon that the living room would not look the way it did when we left that morning. It was a way of life. I had a severely disabled brother and she was home alot with him so I think it stemmed from just needing something to occupy her time, mind and energy other than towards caring for him. Sometimes we might come home and our entire room would have been moved to a completely different part of the house. She would ask us first, but she would always do it while we were at school. (I think she also took that time to make sure we were walking the straight and narrow...if you know what I mean!)
I don't have those tendencies. I tend to put things in a spot and leave them, like you.
What does that say? Not sure! It could be something deeply psychological and spiritual OR it could just be that I don't like getting up in the middle of the night to get a drink of water and worried that I might come back with one less toe! Who knows?
Still I love this post! I pray you are feeling better and getting stronger!
Blessings, friend!
Dori
Oh, my friend. You always surprise me. Like you, I'm the type that keeps furniture in one place for forever.
In fact, this furniture placement thing has been a recent struggle. Someone gave us this rediculously big TV before Christmas. We're not big TV watchers. (Not too holy for TV, just too tired with little ones...ministry coordination and bible study is done online after the kids are asleep.)
When they offered the TV, my husbands eye lit up. My heart sank. What are we going to do with this huge thing??? It's taken over the family room...literally.
Oh, I wish I had your friend to tell me where this thing should go (besides out the door...hahaha).
Love you,
Susan

Oh girls, I am constantly moving the furniture in my house. I move it out to clean under it and get all the toys that end up there. It ends up getting scooted around the room and the whole room re organized. Sometimes the rearangements lead to a total redecorate. I love it. My husband works away for 14 days at a time and when he comes home he says something is always different. I don't know what is says about me but I like the change it always feels fresh when I move it around.
Sofa table. Yep, that sounds right.
Howling my head off. I'm sorry, Siestas. Your Mama should be more well rounded.
Most of our furniture is old and outdated. We decided long ago to wait on updating furniture until I stop being a stay at home mom. Our furniture tends to stay exactly where it is because it just feels comfortable and useful.
However, I have found that I move pictures from walls around the house every so often. My husband will laugh because he will see me holding a hammer and a picture and walking around the house to find a new spot for it. I walk around from room to room moving and rearranging things on the walls. It just feels like I am able to change things up without throwing my back out in the process!
I have lived in my home for 7 years now, and have not changed one single thing. I too got a new chair and put in the exact same place as the old chair. I'm a creature of habit! You should see my classroom. I teach 11th and 12th grade English, and there have been years that I don't change the posters in my classroom for 180 days! My students have even suggested places where I can go and buy new posters...
For me, it is just plain laziness. Moving the furniture means possibly not liking the change which means having to move it all over again...why bother????
Okay, off to do Day One of my Bible study for Believing God!
Beth,
You crack me up! I have been a furniture re-arranger if that's a word, from childhood. I was always moving my stuff around all the time and surprising my parents. Eventually I became an Interior Designer, and right now I just put away the Christmas decorations and am trying to decide how to rearrange and what to change for the New Year.My poor husband would be shocked if we didn't change the furniture around.( And yes he has a few good suggestions over the last 26 years.)
I guess maybe you're born this way???
Thanks for such a fun post!
I'm still praying for your recovery and can't wait until Jan22 I pray for your strength to be back up to normal by then!

Are you kidding me? I'm married to a United Methodist minister! Not only do I rearrange furniture, I exchange houses with another minister's family every 4 - 5 years!
I LOOOOVVVVVEEEE to rearrange anything. Furniture...Bathroom towels...whatever it may be. I think the change keeps life interesting and I like to walk in and see something fresh / clean / new. I have worried in the past if it was a sign of discontent. Maybe it is at times but Im trying to enjoy this quirky part of my personality. One of the benefits is that often I end up getting rid of something in the process and someone else benefits from my changes. Someones trash is definatley another persons treasure. My cousin (sho is worse then I am) keeps a box in her house at all times for the "get rid of pile" to donate and it feels so good to clean out. It's also one of the only times I dust! haha. P/S they make bags to put under your Christmas tree skirt now that you can just slip over the tree to contain the needles after the season is over. They work great. GOD bless You are such a blessing to me!
I'm a total re-arranger!! Not only for the Christmas tree but just for fun! And, I like all kinds of seasonal goodies, too,...Christmas came down and snowflakes and snowmen came out and all the snowy themed books.
Praying for your continued recovery,

Oh, I started rearranging furniture when I was around 8, I guess. I have even rearranged furniture at houses where I was babysitting (after the kids were asleep, of course!). One time, when I was much younger, I kept hinting to my husband that I wanted to swap the upstairs sofa with the downstairs one. He kept putting it off, so I just did it myself. The upstairs one was a sectional, too, I might add! He about never forgave me for that one, but I discovered that a relatively weak woman can make a lot of changes--an inch at a time! Which is also how God has transformed a relatively weak woman for the past 48 years! Glory!
Ha! That is SO funny! I am definitely a once it is there it stays there kind of person!
We finally just got "real" furniture a couple of years ago after 18 years of marriage! So when the decorator put it down... I went behind him and put tape markers underneath all the couches so I knew exactly where they went! (can't believe I am admitting this!)
I was so worried a couple of days ago because to get the tree in and out you really have to move the furniture and my tape moved! LOL I'm still not sure they are back in the right place! : )
You are absolutely hilarious sometimes. I needed this tonight!
I am a don't move the furniture kinda girl. We painted our boys room about a year ago and changed the furniture arrangement when we put the room back together-I was totally living on the edge. Actually every other piece of furniture in my house was placed where it is by a friend of mine years ago and hasn't moved since. Her placement was much better than I had originally had it and I just kept it the way she put it rather than ruin a good thing.
I do love you Siesta Mama-you make me smile and know it's okay to be "normal". Enjoy your table in it's new home........
I like to pretend I'm a mover and a shaker, but lets be honest. I don't think I'll ever move my furniture. I don't know how else it would fit!
I grew up in a home where my mother was always rearranging, much to the chagrin and pain of my father who unknowingly would come home in the dark. She was even known to "rearrange" with a chain saw, my hand in the air. New door.
Even now, she very frequently rearranges, repaints.
So, I tend to leave things where they are. Every now and then I get the urge, but mainly because the furniture I have in my living room just doesn't work.
Let's just pretend that the reason we don't rearrange isn't because we lack skill, creativity, or imagination, but rather because we are content. Yeah, that's it.

Since I was old enough to move furniture by myself, I've rearranged furniture constantly. I figure it's easier and cheaper than buying new stuff, right? My parents used to laugh because they'd come home from work and my furniture would be completely switched around in my bedroom. I'm not as bad now, but I do love to move stuff around for a different look. I'm not a decorator and most of our stuff is hand-me-downs, so it doesn't all go together well and I can't settle on a "look."
love moving the furniture around but since our furniture can only be one way in the house we live in I can't move anything around. I hate that. I like to shake things up.

My friend Laura is like you. Gets it like she likes it and leaves it alone. She moved into a new house a few years ago, and when I went to see her I walked in the front door and died laughing. EXACT same floor plan as her old house, just bigger and with one more bedroom. Tickled me to no end.
I move furniture around when the wind changes direction. IT MAKES ME SO HAPPY. And I like to angle things. Makes me feel all sassy.
Beth,
I love that you not only read all our comments it is like a conversation between all of us around the world. Is the Lord not just amazing how he has put together our little family.

Well, I'm kind of both, but for crazy reasons. I like to shake things up, but I have severe "can't decorate a house" syndrome. It's sad and scary and usually makes for lots of redos on moving furniture, and considering it's furniture my husband custom built, that's hard work! Our bed is a heavy dude!
i rearrange every week. drives my husband crazy. my favorite tv program is HGTV. love to paint the walls different every other year. heheheee. love ya, Jeanette
I a mover and a painter. I love to make old things look new, simply by putting them in a different place or even in a different room. I like to paint walls and have even faux finished a few. I also LOVE to rearrange the furniture. But, I've had to rearrange my preferences to fit my home, because the way the rooms are laid out, there really are only one or two ways the furniture in the living room will fit. Same with the bedroom. So I mix it up in the kids' rooms and in the family room downstairs. My husband remodeled my kitchen for me so I LOVE how that change has made my home more homey. I picked out everything: paint, countertops, cabinets, drawer pulls, faucets from different stores at different times (by the way--I scoped out the big box stores for stuff I liked and then found it on ebay for a fraction--and I mean a fraction--of the price). I'm not sure if I love my new kitchen more because it's new, or because it's all me, or because I got a screaming deal on most everything in there.... probably a little of everything!
I live with a stayer--for his part, I'm glad we live in a house where not much changes, until I get the creative bee in my bonnet and I go buy some paint. He just rolls his eyes.
My mom is like Martha Stewart and changes decorations with each season. She goes nuts if she sees me or my sister still has a pumpkin on the porch at a certain point. I forget to change decorations so when she comes to town that is when I throw the pumpkins out (I know it's December!) and put the Christmas stuff up quickly. When she comes in the spring I quickly remove the Christmas stuff and put out spring flowers, etc. It's stressful. :)

i rearrange constantly--it's the cheapest way to redecorate. we have a babysitter who comes pretty regularly and swears the furniture has only been in the same place as the time before like twice.
I am a move it around kind of girl...but I must tell you that my dad used to tell me when I was a teenager that was a sign of a sick mind...I think mostly because he got tired of helping me move the larger pieces:)
Oh moving furniture - I am known in my family for that - I began at a very young age finding all the ways to rearrange my bedroom after we remodeled and got our own rooms. I would be up till midnight, nine years old mind you, pushing my full size cedar bed to the other wall and moving the dresser and cedar chest. I must confess that cedar chest was my "disco dance floor". My mother thought I LOVED to dust (hee hee), but no I was using all that Pledge to polish my "dance floor" - even had the little chitzy color strobe light - ah yes Stayin' Alive and Disco Duck on vinyl records even - those were the days! :0) I did have a bit of respite when I broke my arm a second time in two years (Tom Boy that I was too) and had to sit and watch my furniture in the SAME SPOT for a couple months - such misery was that to my ten year old heart!
Now adays, I love to move my furniture with those Magic*Moving* Men sliders - think of it as a Bump*It or Snugg*li for furniture moving. Of course, I would also love to skate across the floors on those as they can really move. I guess I am of the lineage of David 'cause I love to dance.
Oh Siesta Sister, I have to keep moving my furniture around - perhaps I have a restless heart because I love to travel the world too.
My husband and I have been married 42 (count 'em!) years and have lived in so many houses that I never had to rearrange furniture - We would just move! Been here 8 years - record for us - and although my living room is too small to rearrange anything I get really itchy feet from our history of moving and I tell my husband, "We have to either redecorate SOMETHING or move." So we paint or push the leaves of the dining room table in. That's as daring as I get. I like the sameness of my furniture placement. It makes me feel secure.
We don't move furniture... we just move houses about every 3 years.... that way I don't have to house clean! HA! At least that's what I tell myself everytime my husband says we have to move again!
Oh dear, I used to change it all around at least twice a year...then I had kids. I have to be honest, we have been in this home for six years and not one change...... hmmmmm maybe I should!
Oh, I'm Nancy, btw, nice to meet you all :)
Once it is there it doesn't go anywhere. If it works why mess with it...also I have some very large heavy pieces so I don't move much.
I LOVE to rearrange the furniture. I love to rearrange anything. Unfortunately our house is not that big so there is only about 1 option in each room, but oh how I try!
Oh my goodness, I am the wild crazy woman how is always changing something up. I have to have something move every couple of months or something change within room, it brings a freshness.
Hi, Nancy! Welcome to Siestaville! This is a pretty fun place to love Jesus.
I always dream of doing it but really never do. I have a motto: When you move in you better put stuff where you want it because it will stay there till you move again. I have had wonderful family move my family into my house and wherever they saw fit for something it has stayed for 9 years!
I never, ever, ever move furniture around. Ever. I tried once and it didn't work and I got all hot and sweaty. I KNEW there was a reason I had never rearranged before. And I haven't since!
Oh, excuse me. I move one couch over and move a decorative piece across the room once a year to make room for the Christmas tree. But that's it. It goes right back where it came from after I un-deck the halls.
I am the type that ALWAYS rearranges furniture! My husband jokes that he comes home from work and has to check twice to make sure he's in the right house. He never knows what he's going to find.
My family lives out of state. They claim my house has not looked the same even twice that they have come to visit. Surely they are exagerating? Probably not.
I'm not sure what that says about me. But I am noticing that I think I like to rearrange more in the winter. I think it's because I am so stir crazy about not getting outside that I have to do SOMETHING to occupy my time.
Like you, Beth, I don't move furniture around either. We have lived in this house for 8 1/2 years and have never rearranged anything. And the houses before this, we didn't move the furniture either. I know some ladies that rearrange their furniture a lot to clean. As far as I'm concerned, that's another reason NOT to move it. I just found out about this blog and your surgery. Glad to hear you are feeling somewhat better. May God bless you and your family this new year.
When I lived with my parents, I changed my furniture around every few months! I get bored easily. But now that I live with my husband and he doesn't pick up my messes like my mom used to, I leave things how they are. Too much cleaning after rearranging!
I not only change furniture with a fervency, but I change ROOM purposes any old chance I get. I have a three bedroom house that I will have lived in ten years come this summer, and by that time, each room will have served as master bedroom, guest bedroom, and office at some point in that time span. It's a blessed good thing my kitchen and bathrooms won't uprood without significant expense. It's probably a sickness, but I figure there are worse ones I could have.
I am a fix and forget it girl. I was born that way. It may take me a year and half to get it how I like it, but after that...I'm done.
I like rearranging, but a few years ago we opted for two full-size sofas instead of a sofa and loveseat and it's left me kind of locked into an arrangement. I rearrange pictures and mantel stuff a lot to compensate...
(Glad you're feeling better - hope you're up for Siesta Scripture Weekend!)
I rearrange my furniture with every holiday. Somehow my couches and end tables have a "Christmas look" as well as an "Easter, 4th of July, Thanksgiving look, etc.". But don't go by me. I am the product of a mother who changes her nic-naks with all the holidays including Columbus Day. :)
I do care about how things look but I'm a fix it and forget kinda girl. It may take me a year and a half to get things arranged how I want them and then after that...nothing moves, nothings new is added and it stays that way for years(ok I'm not old enough to say years with such authority but you get my drift)
We (usually meaning my husband)move furniture once or twice a year- sometimes more...and I move my classroom around all the time!
I LOVE changing things up but never do. I will sit in my den and go"man, I need something there, or over there or pillows there" and then I never do it.
So, I guess you'd say I don't change a thing. And, I'm ok with that. ;)
Love you Miss Beth!

I definitely don't move my furniture. Everything is in the same place as it was when we moved in. We've added new pieces of furniture as we've needed it for our children, but once it's in place it doesn't move. I grew up in a home where everything got moved. My Mom moved a room around in our house every week. She still does. My sister and I laugh because we are the exact opposite of her!
I don't like to re-arrange or change my furniture. I like things the same...comfortable...no change please!!! I'm thinkin' i'll be the same way with my mansion in heaven! How would have the audacity to change whatever the Lord is preparing for me?!! :)
First off:HAHAHA!
In my younger days, I was a furniture mover. Then married a guy who HATES change, especially m furniture that isn't where he left it. So, over the years, I have become a "keep it where it is" girl.
I confess to moving stuff in my head and then, exhausted by the mental effort, deciding it's just best where it is.
I got the moving furniture gene from my mama who has suffered serious injuries more than once moving pianos, china hutches, sofas, ect. "It makes it feel like you've gotten something new" she says. Pretty sure that's why I did it, too.
I can't imagine what it says about me-hopefully, it says that at 50, I've figured out how to be content.
I love friends' homes that do change furniture, but I NEVER do....once it's in a place I like, I do not feel the need to move it. We moved into this house 15 years ago....and it looks pretty much the same as it did that first day.
i would love to rearrange, but just don't know how, so it stays the same siesta! love your blog and you!!
also, my mom his a bulging disc on her back and is having back surgery mon. and will be in a brace for 6 months, is that what you have had? i just found your amazing blog, so didn't know? thanks!!
Too fun...I have rearranged my living room once. I pushed everything to the walls of our tiny living room to make room for the babies to play and lessen the chances of ER visits due to slamming heads on coffee table edges.
The bedroom furniture has been moved one inch to accommodate a pack 'n play. There is no other configuration that would allow us to open the door or move.
So pretty much by default of a small house, I don't do much rearranging. Pregnant or not, I nest and constantly organize and get rid of stuff, so that satisfies any urge to change things around. Furniture is heavy. In fact, we have a couch in our basement that I have vowed will only be removed once it has been overtaken by a chainsaw. I'm not kidding. ;)
I take after my grandmother. The family would tease that you better be careful getting out of bed in the morning because she might have rearranged the bed while you were sleeping in it!
I'm not sure what it says about me.
I have it so bad that I actually have rearranged my furniture on HGTV's website...you can put in the dimensions of the room and all your furniture and click and drag it without having to literally drag the furniture around the room.
It's hopeless.
We moved all the time growing up so I lived in so many different places...........until I married my Mr. Wonderful and have been here 35 years!!!! YIKES! Needless to say I have always moved furniture around-had to move something. :) My husband just shakes his head. I personally don't think you get really clean unless you move things around. By the way now all 3 of my grown children move things around also in their homes. Can't wait to get your results.
Oh, I re-arrange all the time. I blame it on my dad's job. As a child and teen, we moved around all the time. I've lived in all but three southern states and a couple of them more than once. So, I get bored easily and feel the need for change, plus you find all kinds of stuff that's been missing, but I have yet to find all those socks that have no mates, or all the pacifiers that I once offered my older children good cold hard cash money if they could just find one, to quiet the screaming baby. :)
I LOVE to rearrange!
For other people. My line of work is Space Saving ,Space Creating ,and Space Rearranging. I love to do it for other people because it gives them the biggest buzz to see a room change completely simply by moving one or two things. And they are always shocked that they never thought of it themselves! However, in my own Simplified Cozy Cottage, it's pretty much been the same since I moved in (at least the last two years I've been at this house). The Lord keeps me on the MOVE!
Ha! Ha! I got so tickled about this ... We never move furniture around either! We lived in our new house about 5 years before we put anything on the wall!! ( my husband did not want to put any nail holes in the wall) We do have to move things around when we put up the Christmas tree. I do love to watch HGTV and especially Designed to Sell! This woman comes in to evaluate your house on it's condition and marketability! It is really hilarious sometimes!! but sometimes she is kinda mean!
Siesta Mama: Please do not try to sweep or even "swiffer" !!! until the doctor gives you the green light!!
Keep the fun coming!
I don't move furniture too often, but I do love to rearrange my "stuff". I love to "shop the house" for the perfect thing for on top of a table that I find in the bedroom, etc. (: fun question
I leave it how it is - unless a hurricane comes along and "redecorates" for me! ;) We love our post-hurricane design and haven't changed a thing since...
I do care a great deal about what color the paint is, etc, but am not
one to move the furniture around. Of course, part of that is because in my house the furniture pretty much only looks right in the spots it's been in for the last 21 years.
And, no it's not all the same furniture but, like Beth, I just put the new stuff where the old stuff was. Of course, I have these great ideas for decorating but when I actually try them they look awful so I have decided to leave the decorating to the gifted.
I just have to hope that my mansion in heaven is already decked out!!
I think one day I will be a furniture mover, but since we have little kids the furniture is strategically placed to cover up certain "beat up" places on the walls. We need to paint, but what's the point?
My living room furniture has been in the same spot for over 2 years now. My bedroom furniture has been in the same spot for 10. I look around the room and think about possibly changing it, but then I like things the way they are. However, my wonderful husband likes to change around the stuff in my kitchen cabinets and then has the nerve to ask me where stuff is. It drives me crazy, but I love him anyway.
I'm glad you are feeling better.
It drives me BA-NA-NAs for my furniture to be moved! Like, the chairs need to always be sitting at the same angle. My aunt used to change her furniture placement at least once a month, and it was a great adventure for us...but PLEASE leave mine alone! Now, mind you, my husband thinks everything should all be pushed up against the wall in a military line...but that's another story for another day.
I hate to rearrange furniture! My husband on the other hand would move things every week if I would let him. Needless to say little has changed over the years. Change is so hard for me.
Like you I like to have others help me decorate. Luckily I have an amazing mother-in-law with great taste. She leads I follow.
By the way I love this random post!
Can't wait to hear what other siestas have to say!
I love, love, love to rearrange furniture! In fact I'm dying to rearrange my living room right this minute, but my husband won't let me!
I was rolling on the floor laughing at your shananigans (sorry if I spelled that wrong). Go Beth...take a risk!
In Him,

I'm one that leaves the furniture in the same place for years, as well as pictures on the wall too...just recently though, we took all of our living room pictures down to paint the room and I haven't put anything back up yet...I am thinking of getting a few new ones to change things up some..and some new sofa pillows...my mom is just the opposite, she is always rearranging, buying new furniture or decorations, selling them, painting, changing things right and left...funny how we are so opposite!
We just bought our first house and are "acquiring" furniture for the first time also. I would love it if someone would come in and tell me how to arrange it, what rug would look good, pick out paint colors, etc. I have the interest, but not the talent. I think I am just a little bit scared of creating a disaster! I have a feeling I will be one of those like you, Beth, who finds a perfect place for the furniture and leaves it there for 25 years! Thanks for your encouragement to all of us. You are a true joy! And Happy (late) Anniversary!
I never change things around. I might as well super glue all the furniture legs down.
Ohhh.... but then my husband may not ever buy me new furniture!!! Better not do that!!!
ha ha Fun post! Our furniture has only changed for new babies born years ago and Christmas every year to accommodate the tree. That's it.
I move my furniture around all of the time... at home & in my classroom. It never surprises my sweet 5 year olds when they come in on Monday mornings & they can't find their seats. (Of course, they have name tags!) :o)
Oh, & I was going to tell you sofa table, and I was actually pretty proud of myself for knowing that because I know nothing at age 22. :)
Hi Beth and family! This is my first time commenting, but I've read here for a while.
I love to move furniture around. Too much, I think. I get bored easily with the same look.
Now clothing is another issue. I need help and get it from my oldest daughters.
Hope and pray you're healing quickly!
Hugs,
Karen
If I could rearrange my home every month I would do it. However, there are only so many ways it can go :) I would redecorate once a month also but of course I cannot personally justify spending money on that (nor do i have the money for it :) )
My husband is VERY visual so anytime I move even the littlest item, not mention furniture, he is so on to me... he watches me like a hawk!
But I get brave.I take a look around the house and make my plan to rearrange. As soon as he leaves, and I do watch to be sure he makes the turn at the end of the street, I start moving furniture. It's even better when one of the boys are here. They're the real movers and shakers:)
I never used to be like this but you have to love HGTV.
It's their fault.
I rest my case.
PS He almost always loves what I have done. Bless his heart. He knows which side of the bed is the warmest:)
I rearrange furniture like I change clothes. I love a new look to a room, (but don't love walking through said room in the middle of the night and forgetting that the furniture has been moved thus KILLING a shin or a toe on it).
Now, having said that, when I get it placed just "so," it makes me CRAZY for it to be 2 inches off. For crying out loud, if you scoot the chair 3 inches when you get up out of it, then SCOOT IT BACK.
At least until I make up my mind to change it again. ;)
I definitely have to do some rearranging every once in a while. I was on vacation last week and the first day of my vacation I spent rearranging my living room and then my bedroom. My husband thought I had lost it....I had but that is beside the point! :) I think it makes me feel like I have a fresh start. We all need that sometimes! I think it might be hereditary too. I know my mom was a rearranger and so is my sister.

I don't move furniture as much as I move paintings and photos on the walls and on end tables and such. I move those all the time.
Tiffany
My personality dictates a strong dislike for change. However, I am married to a man who LOVES to move furniture around. So. If I lived alone, I'd probably never move anything. But since I don't, the various rooms are rearranged several times a year. He's the only man than can turn a dining room table 3 different ways in a 10x13 room.
My husband LOVES to rearrange furniture... every 6 months whether we need it or not (summer and winter setups)
At first it would drive me CRAZY!! BUT now that we have too much stuff and not enough space (4 kids and lots of toys) I miss it. I am soo looking forward to God providing us a larger home SOON so that we can rearrange again!!!
I'm all about moving furniture when I can. Goodness, I can't even remember how many times my tiny little self would spend 45 minutes scooting my bed, inch by inch, into a new position in my room and have my parents almost trip over it halfway through when they came into my room not knowing what was going on. I just get bored with it in one place. :-)
Trust me...if we had your number...you would have had about 40 texts saying SOFA TABLE!
It's words like etagere that are hard to remember!
Melana
I like to change furniture, but don't do it all that often. I really prefer changing the paint colors in my house. Every time my husband goes out of town on business I paint another room. He never knows what he will find when he comes home!
My mother is a professional furniture mover...she moves something every week, in some room of the house, as she cleans.
I'm a changer at heart. When we lived in Florida, there was only one bloomin' way for the furniture to go in our living room. ONE. It about sent me over the edge, or at least to the nearest TJMaxx to buy new throw pillows!!
I leave all my furniture in the same place except to move a chair out to put "the tree" in, then put the chair back in its place afterward. My daughter who lives next door w/her DH & 3 children (eat your heart out, Beth...) moves their furniture FREQUENTLY. But her DH likes to do it as much as she does which makes them a good match, & now their children love to move it too.
um...don't you have to have a non funky living room that actually allows for furniture to be moved...oh wait...I only have a couch and a coffee table...never mind. I do HOWEVER need paint...lots and lots of paint...
that's all i'm sayin'
over and out.
I am one who rearranges often. Being a single mom when the urge hit me(and often) and when no help was available, I prayed and asked God to give me the strength to move my furniture. lol HE did!
I dislike painting, very much. I love to decorate. I really have a gift in that area. Don't know where I got that gift but I enjoy it but please don't make me paint.
My decorations came down on New years Day. I couldn't take it another moment. I am ready for spring. :)
We moved 3 days before Thanksgiving. I had every box unpacked and everything put away before Thanksgiving, every picture was hung, etc.... and I cooked for the family. I was so tired but I could not rest until it was finished. NO joke, I worked until 3:00 a.m. on Thanksgiving Eve until my room was arranged and rearranged to my liking.
It's a sickness, I am sure of it! lol
Love you!
Does it count if you just think about rearranging the furniture? Because I think about it all the time. I just never actually do it.
Although now that I've learned I can move heavy stuff across my floors by putting towels under the bottom, my life and my living room might be changed forever.
My grandma could figure out a million different ways to rearrange her furniture WITHOUT it looking cluttered- it was amazing. I don't have that ability. However, my hubby rearranges occasionally and has a great knack for it!
Thanks for the laugh! This is fun!
Forgot to mention that although I very much like color & decor, my daughter does the decorating for our nearly-3000 member church.
I try to rearrange the furniture in my dorm room between semesters to freshen things up a little bit. My room at home hasn't changed a bit since high school, but at this point it's not worth it. You are hilarious! I was convinced you were making a bigger announcement than you did. haha
Mostly don't move things but in this house have moved the living room around a bit (been here 3 years) in effort to find the best fit and then when I got a new chair.
By the way- I love that you watch 24! Me too! It starts Jan 17th according to a preview tonight. Can't wait!
Blair
My goodness, I can not relate HAH
I change my furniture and nicknacks once a month. I'm a night person and I can't even count the times oh around 10 pm I've gotten up and started moving furniture around. I'm also only married two years I'm sure hubby thinks I'm crazy. LOL I love to organize and reorganize it gives me a fresh new feeling.
I'm a rearranger. We've lived here three and a half years, and I think I've had the furniture where it is for about a year. I like it as-is, but will likely rearrange everything within the year-- just because I can.
Nope. Not much rearranging here!
Our daycare gal constantly moves things around and it makes her husband crazy... but I think little kids like the variety and see toys and books in a new way when they are put in a fresh place.
Oh, Beth....can I even call you that?? I feel like I need to call you "mother Beth", or "queen Beth" or at the very least, "MISS Beth"??! I'm new to posting comments on here and it make me feel weird to be "talking" to you...anyway, here's what I really was INTENDING to say:
I LOVE rearranging furniture! It is therapy, i tell you. When I have a fight with my husband, or a hard day with my kids or I'm just feeling a little down, I rearrange the furniture! It works wonders for your mood. I will do the whole thing alone. One time I even pushed the couch all the way across the room 9 months pregnant and yes, I went into labor the next day! My husband works nights and many mornings he comes home tossing his jacket on the floor where a couch used to be or sitting his coffee cup on a chair where a TV stand used to be. I LOVE IT! Now, I am NOT a decorator, but I can do some rearranging...it's grand. It's fun.
And I heard somewhere that you should rearrange your furniture if you don't travel much! Maybe that's it! You travel so much you don't have to rearrange! I, however, have not seen a plane since my honeymoon so the furniture fills a void somehow?...hmmm....I don't know, but either way, you CRACK me up! Love your blogs. LOVE THEM.
I would like to say that I love this post and that you re-arranged! I re-arrange all the time and for some strange reason Hubby disappears during that time. Crazy, I know!
I LOVE to rearrange my furniture. The bad news is that my new family room is situated in such a way that everything fits pretty much only one way - imagine my frustration. To alleviate this stress, I rearrange my classroom at school (elementary/4th grade) sometimes on a daily basis. My poor students never know where things are going to end up. My own children just shake their heads.
Thanks, Beth, for giving me a giggle today! :)
My hubby, five daughters and I live in a 105 year old home. I do not rearrange furniture because the way it is now is the only way it will fit. I have been in the process of moving the bedrooms around for two years. There are only 3 bedrooms (on the small side) for 7 people. The rooms need to be stripped of wallpaper (which is literally on every surface including the closet ceiling), the woodwork stripped (lead-based paint) and repainted. So at the moment there are two sets of bunkbeds in one room and Mom,Dad and baby sleeping with us in the other while the third is being updated. Once it's all done, Mom and Dad will move into the updated room, the oldest two girls backs into their bedroom (which we are sleeping in now) and baby will go in the largest bedroom with her 8 and 5 year old sisters. Isn't that clear as mud? I hope to be finished with this project by the end of January. Believe me, it will stay that way until they graduate from high school. :-)

Beth, I am CRAZY when it comes to paint! I can change my wall colours in a heartbeat. Sometimes I will obsess for months over a colour or just get up one morning & say, "I think I am going to paint my livingroom orange today!"
You should see me when I get going cuz I am a paintin' machine putting it on!!
I once painted an entire room one day & got up in the next morning & decided I didn't like it. So out I went to buy more paint & had a brand new colour by the end of that day!!!! When some of my friends come over, they walk in and say, "So, What colour are your walls today?!"
I even have 2 bags of paint samples that I keep around the house for when I get the urge!!!!Which I confess was just 2 days ago!!LOL!
When I was younger we rearranged furniture quite often. Now not very much at all.We have been married thirty years. I absolutely hate to paint. But would love it if someone else came in and shook things up just a bit.
Hi, Mrs. Beth! I thought you would like this...
http://www.fox.com/24/
Hi Beth,
You make me laugh and I am just like you on the furniture and decorating.
God has blessed me with a great friend who is a very gifted interior decorator. We moved to Colorado 2 1/2 years ago, and she helped us shop, arrange, and decorate. Everything stays right where she puts it, and we love it, and we love her.
Can't wait to see you in Houston Jan. 22nd!
Blessings,
Jan

no rearranging here...I built a log cabin with furniture in mind...and built in as much as I could...stability, reliability, getting around in the dark without a flashlight or being able to tell someone EXACTLY where something is - priceless.
only exception is that I move a rocking chair over 5 feet to fit the christmas tree in front of the window.
Beth, the countdown to 24 is on...12 days and 2 minutes...oh the joy....
Well, I'm only a student in college, but I know that when I was younger I would close my door and rearrange my furniture in my room and then surprise mom when she couldn't open my door because the dresser was in front of it. haha
But now, in our dorm room, me and my roommate are always moving things around, well as best as we can.
Who knows, this may continue later on, even when I have a house of my own. But, sometimes, I just get the urge to move the bed in a different spot. :-)
I like to rearrange things. Change is my friend. The only thing is...I'm not at all good at it.
My poor husband :)
Love and Hugs,
Kate :)
My husband says he is afraid to get up in the middle of the night because he will fall!!(I have moved stuff around AGAIN!!!) I LOVE to move things.I like change or is it boredom?? Still, it is cheap theraphy.
You crack me up! I just told my husband that "Beth said she is looking forward to 24 starting"
... he thought it was his friend's fiance Beth and I said no!! Beth Moore. He said Beth Moore watches 24?! I said "that is what I'm telling you! She is like any and all of my girlfriends that drop by any time." Then he said "Is Beth coming to our house?!!" LOL...!! Then I said "she is a girlfriend... so it is quite possible." He just shook his head! He doesn't get girlfriends bless his heart ;-) !!!
Oh my, I love to move furniture, and re-decorate my rooms. I have moved everything out and then put it all back in differently. So fun! I get so bored with the same old thing. My Mom was the worst about moving furniture. My Dad always turned the lights on before he walked through any room because the furniture could be moved.Ha!
I like to re-arrange things and furniture. Not real often, but every now and then to liven things up a bit! And I love finding new fun things to put on the walls and I love shelves because you can periodically change out what you decorate with on them! Although I don't have a whole lot of room to work with so I'm somewhat limited! It's fun though!!
I'm a bi-annual furniture rearranger. Kind of a clean around everything & need a new view on life kind of thing. It's easier than moving all together but feels like a new space when it's got a "new home".
Beth, I am pretty much like you ... I put it there and leave it there. And I'll tell you why. When I was younger, I used to "try" to move things around. I'd be sweatin' up a storm ... moving heavy furniture all by myself ... and when it was all said and done ... I liked it better where I had it initially. So I had to move it all back. I'm 41 and just can't do that anymore! Who cares?!! Let it be. Let it be.
I love you. You tickle me to pieces.

I cannot leave my furniture in the same place for longer than a year, unless there is absolutely NO WAY to change (like it might block a door or window or something. Anyhow, my friends come over all the time and practically yell at me "seriously Valerie,, AGAIN!"
I wish I was good at rearranging, but I honestly don't have much of a creative bone in my body. My furniture hasn't changed in the 8 years I've been in this house. I think about it occasionally, but I don't know what would look right and honestly it stresses me to think about it too hard. Haha. I need to get some of my creative friends to come over and give me pointers! Yay for Keith and his decorating ability! Heehee ;)
Beth, you and Keith are so adorable! I am loving these posts.
My man and I got tired of moving furniture to put up the Christmas tree so a couple years ago we simultaneously said, 'you know if you (he said I) built a platform to fit between the wall and the fireplace hearth there in front of the bookcase we could set the tree right there; raised like that there would be room enough, and we wouldn't have to move furniture; and we could even buy a smaller tree and it would still reach the ceiling. Lets do it.' And he did. I guess you could say we don't move furniture either. Why mess with perfection, huh? Now, what that says about us? I'm not sure we want to know. *smile*
Thanks for sharing your extraordinary 'ordinary' everyday life with us.
Did I really just type that and am I really gonna click publish? Yeah, I am!
Love you so much!!
OK, did y'all hear Sarah say that she heard somewhere about people who travel a lot not having the need to rearrange their furniture as much? I'm going with that one. Yep. That's what it is. But why on earth do you think I didn't know what a sofa table was??
You are going to think I am out of my mind, but just yesterday... JUST yesterday I moved the furniture around in our t.v. room at 6:00 in the morning before work! I woke up in the middle of the night thinking about it! My husband went to bed with it one way and woke up to a totally different room. I had to point it out to him when I got home-he hadn't noticed!! I've been in the same house for 24 years, so a little change is nice... especially when the Christmas tree comes down! I can't believe you posted about this tonight!
Looking forward to seeing you (hopefully) in a couple of weeks!
Love,
Angie xoxo
This is too funny! I am like you, furniture stays where it is. My momma, who has a gift for decorating, is the one who helps me decorate our home, and I don't dare budge or move anything because I know it looks good if she does it. I even take pictures of how things look before I clean or decorate for a holiday so I can go back and look at the picture and make sure everything goes back just the way it was! :) Some day, I hope her knack for decorating and spatial gifting rubs off on me!
I LOVE to rearrange because it feels new. BUT...we haven't moved anything in our house in 3 years! My husband says it's because the stuff goes where it is now.
When we were first married, I moved our furniture on a regular basis...so much that my husband, if gone for an evening meeting, would be sure to turn on a light before walking through a room. Now 21 years later, I think about rearranging but don't because I just "like" things as they are.
Hahaha! I appreciate your spirit of perseverance and joy! For many years I moved furniture all the time and my sweet hubby often liked to tell stories of how he'd be coming home late at night and worrying about whether or not he would bump into furniture!!! I reached the point in my life where my priorities changed and I realized there's a whole lot more important things in life than where I put our furniture. Hahaha, I shared in a Bible study once that we girls spend so much time and money dressing up our homes to impress people we don't even like!!! Some of the ladies in my study didn't think it was very funny...but I still do!
BTW, you mentioned the show 24 in your previous blog, my daughter Grace will be playing a photojournalist in the first episode of 24. She's a tall, lanky girl like her mom. Grace moved from Atlanta to Hollywood to shine the light of Christ in the dark shadows of TV, stage and screen, and so far He's got her in over 50 prime time shows. Blessings on your and your fam and your ministry!
I am part of the leave it as it is club. I have lived in my house 8 years, and I have only re-arranged the guest bedroom by necessity. My motto -if it works, don't fix it.
Man...I was gonna tell you it was a sofa table but Travis beat me to it!
Mine is against the wall too.
I not a rearranger. Everything stays put. Mostly because I have a small house and there is not a whole lot of other places things could go.
FYI ... I didn't know "the table behind the couch" was called a "sofa table" either! I need one, too. :)
You are getting these posted quick tonight!
Love you dearly.

I would love to rearrange our furniture, paint our walls, and pick out some new decor but am so indecisive! I have tried moving around our living room several times, but after two times of begging my husband to help with the big stuff only to have it go back to its original spot he went on strike. So it stays! :)
I'm definitely one of those who leaves the furniture just as it is. But I have a dear sanquine friend who moves hers every other week. The comment she makes when she visits is (she lives in a different city) the sameness of my house brings her comfort. And that was compliment! I think that's ministry. Don't you?
I have been known to rearrange furniture in the living room on a whim. My bedroom, only when I am nesting and then I have to get help. This time around, I have a plan but have yet to arrange the help. I only have six weeks to go....
Shortly before my husband and I were married, my mom and sister were visiting me at my house. My future (at that point) husband knew it was his cue to start heading back to his place when the three of us started rearranging furniture...at 10:00 PM on a Saturday night. Since then, he's learned to accept that when I start talking about moving things around after the kids are in bed, he knows I'm not kidding!! I'm definitely a rearranger!!
I'm like you...it stays where it's put the first time. But here's a quick story that's always given me a laugh. My mother in law has 2 sisters, very close and all live near each other. Years ago, when they were young, first married and had small children they would swap furniture. On the weekends, they'd load up a bedroom suit, couch and chairs or dinette set and move it to another house. Load up that sisters' stuff and move it to the other house. The husbands always said they never came home after dark without turning on the lights because they never knew where the furniture would be or whose it would be.
Never moved the furniture - my boys will move the coffee table (Ms. Beth that is the one that is IN FRONT of the couch about knee high) to do Legos - my youngest says he likes it because the "holes in the carpet show him where he is suppose to put the table when he is done!"
Can't mess with a young man cleaning up after himself!!!

Our furniture is in the same spot as it was when we moved in 23 years ago. Couch and love seat are new, but in the same spot as the old ones. I think I suffer from a bad "change" experience. My mother relocated the kitchen trash can when I was 16. It had always been under the sink and she moved it half way across the kitchen. Dropping my trash inside the cabinet under the sink was a hard habit to break - and depending on what I was dropping it could be messy. Very messy. Don't even want to think about moving the couch.
On a more serious note, as I am thinking about why I hate change, I think it is because my life growing up was so chaotic. Stability in my house was rare. My mother suffered and still suffers from paranoid schizophrenia. As an adult I cherish stability wherever I can get it.
Sorry didn't mean to get all psychological but this post did get me thinking about some serious stuff too.
Hey- well, you know we move every two years since we're in the Navy. So I have to be a mover and rearranger to fit my stuff into vastly different living situations. It's been good for me, because I'm probably a non furniture mover at heart, so it's one more way God is equipping me to minister right where I 'm in the midst of other military wives.
I watched your Passion message last night- stayed up toooo late watching it!!! but it was great, I enjoyed it and it's got me thinking about all the ways so far God has equipped me. Was that a bump-it in your hair or just a clip???
See you in just over 2 weeks- the day after my birthday! What a present that trip will be.
Love, R
In high school already I measured and made templates of all of my furniture pieces in my bedroom so that I could rearrange them on paper before moving them...and this process happened at least once a month! Any possibly configuration of furniture in that small space happened in those years.
Good thing God gave me a college roommate that loved change as well - we were dubbed on our floor for changing our furniture around so often! :-)
Now I live alone and don't use little paper templates, but still enjoy rearranging furniture in my home on a regular basis!

My furniture stays put except during Christmas and then I move a chair and couch to make room for the tree. I've threatened to knock out a couple of walls a few times, because our house is so small.
What I cannot figure out is this:
During Thanksgiving two years ago
our refrigator stopped working, so we stuck our turkey in the van to keep cold. It was cold enough outside. The next year our stove stopped working, so we got a new stove. This year our washing machine and dryer went on the blink; the washer smelled up the whole house. Now, to start the New Year our central heating is blowing cool air__no hot flashes here. It is suppose to get colder,
right? Now, what is Lord trying
to tell us...stay in the wilderness? I keep thinking we will move one day closer to home and help our aging parents.
God has a different plan and I guess I need re-arranging. Ha!
LOL! This question does make me laugh. We moved, two months ago, out of our brick and mortar home into a beautiful fifth wheel RV. We're in the early stages of fulfilling our purpose in ministry! Anyway, there's not a whole lot of furniture that can be moved around, but within two weeks, my husband had removed a major wood structure in the back bunk room, we'd re-designed our closet in the master bedroom, we'd added shelves and pegboard (for my quilting tools) and we've played with items like ottomans, desks, portable drawers and the like. I love changing my decor (which will now be on an understandably much smaller scale), right down to the curtains, floor mats, throws. There's a season for everything, including change! :)
As I had never lived in the same house for more than five years since I left my parents home (almost 30 years ago!)
it was never an issue. It took all of my limited creativity to decorate the FIRST time!! However, I have been in my present home for 10 years now and have not moved so much as a lamp from one spot to another!! It's funny that you asked this now, because just a few days ago this very thing crossed my mind....' I've been here ten years now and should really switch things up and replace some things'. You have inspired me to go for it!!!! (once I find the time & energy!)

ps: I'm praising God for your recovery & still praying for some sort of 'miracle' that I could join you for the Scripture memory celebration!!! (yes, I know the deadline is just a few days away, but with God, ANYTHING is possible!)
Growing up my mom changed the funiture around quite often. Our Tv (the old "box" kind of course) was "bowed in"--kind of melted on one side, because at one time it was placed too close to the wood burning stove in the den.
One day mom changed the room around--again--and put that TV back by the old wood burning stove. She and my dad got in a heated discussion about the placement of the TV...mom & I found it amusing..."Just burn the whole house down!" dad said. We tried to keep it together but we just burst out laughing! We laugh about it to this day...she has a habit of melting things, I'll save that though for another time :)
I'm not a mover...my stuff stays! But, I think this came after years of watching my older sister. She is 18 years my senior, and I recall many a phone call to dad while she was on a whim moving furniture. Piano wedged on stairs. Sofa stuck in her front door. I mean it was endless. I'm content to live and let lie.
So funny that Travis responded with the correct name! :)
Don't bump into the table now that you moved it,
Joy
Rearranging and decorating are like my therapy...I tnink I'm crazy now, but God only knows how insane I would be without this desire to place things in the perfect place only to put it in an even more perfect place in three weeks...Even while typing that I feel crazt....Hmmmm.
I honestly can't say which type I am, because -- please don't hyperventilate, Melissa would kill me -- we've moved 10 times in our 16 years of marriage. The furniture hasn't even made a dent in the carpet by the time we move on.
Thankfully, that's slowly changing. I look forward to learning my type someday -- and to the results of your quiz.
When we designed our house, we designed it already knowing which furniture we would have in it. Before it was built I knew where each stick of furniture would be placed and each decorative item. I said that when they bury me, each thing will be in that exact spot. I feel sorry for the people who buy our house after us. There's only one way to put the furniture.
Honestly, I think that means people like you and I are stable, decisive and have good taste and know it! And that we are amazing a beautiful!
I also came from a home where every time I go back for a visit, my mom has the living room rearranged. And I mean every time. And I mean she still does it to this day.

Owasso OK
And Beth ... there HAS to be a good Bible lesson out of this!! Too cute.

I am a furniture mover! Usually each time I deep clean (seasonly) I rearrange. We bought a new house recently and the living room is a super odd shape and the furniture only fits one way and it is driving me bonkers!
I never move a thing unless I'm actually moving!!

You probably would have known it was called a sofa table tomorrow. Maybe you were having one of those moments (aphasia) we women have when we can't recall nouns! How often do we call the table an ironing board, or a glass a fork...or better yet, we do roll call when trying to say someone's name.
Tell me I'm not the only one who does that.
That is hilarious and brings me great freedom of spirit to hear you say that you don't decorate. You do so many things well and dress so cutely that I assumed that you would be the decorating type. Makes me feel good b/c my house (fashion/paint wise) could be falling down around me and I would hardly notice. Drives my friends and husband a bit batty, but seriously people there are too many good books to read to worry about paint colors!
Also I hope this question is not too personal but I watched you online during the Passion 2010 conference (I was a young one at the first Passion -that was supposed to be the only one:)-conference in Memphis, 1st time I heard you speak, amazing conference) and I have to admit I was a bit distracted wondering what exactly was going on with your hair. I love your hair, but I was wondering if that was the work of a Bumpit?
Simply curiousity, hope you don't mind my questioning spirit:) Amazing talk by the way. Took a whole page of notes while listening with headphones carrying around the computer while making dinner. They were going to take the session offline and I HAD to finish hearing it. Good stuff!
thanks:) See you in January!
I HATE changing furniture around. In fact, I don't even like to change decorations, wall hangings, etc. (except for during the Christmas season). I can totally understand where you're coming from. :)
I just did a post on praying specifically. I think that this is a critical part of a growing prayer life. Praise God for his care for you, and for me, and for all of us. Oh, and, I'm a "get that tree outta here on Dec. 26th" kinda girl. However, I rearrange furniture very regularly. To me, it keeps things fresh, so that I don't have as much desire to buy new.
I just try to keep things neat and picked up: rearranging is over my head at this point. And I don't travel: so I have no explanation other than I don't seem to find time for extras . Thanks for making us laugh!
We have lived in this house for nearly nine years. Two years ago we TALKED about rearranging the living room. Last year, we got brave and did it. Neither of us really liked it, but we couldn't figure out what else to do, so we left it. It's still in the previously not-liked position, but we've gotten used to it. And the thought of putting it back like it used to be has been dismissed.
Shake it up, baby! I'm a mover. In my earlier years, I liked the creativity of it and thought it was fun. Now, with 4 kids and a homeschool in a small house, it's a pain, but I'm still moving things in certain rooms frequently to accomodate all of the growing and changing and multi-tasking and lack of space around here.
Oh am I sssssoooo a move it around any chance I get kind of girl! If I have a living room that doesn't bode well for rearrangement I practially go stir crazy! It's a disease really!
And I always called it a couch table, but I'm not from the south I'm from the NW. We have different lingo here :)

PS we just started Esther today...WOW!!!
I'm not one to change my furniture. I had to move my couch to have a place for my Christmas tree, but when my friend came over she said it was all wrong and she repositioned my tree. Who knew? I did put a table where the tree was when I took it down, but I am sure she will tell me when I need to rearrange again; until then, it will remain as it is. Works for me.
I'm a rearrange every month or so type of girl. I can't stand things to be the same too long. I'm a freak. I like new things and I like old things to be in new places. Just a little change will do me. My husband worries he's next!! Haha :)
Change does me SO much good, I can get a new pen on a bad, and my day is better. A fresh Pepsi will do also.... :)
so so SO Funny!!
I am very...ahem...insecure about interior decorating. So things usually stay where they are put.
Now, if I can just get me roots (I keep having to move every couple years) I'd probably be one content nester! =D
We're military (need I say more?). We've moved HOMES every year for the past 7 years (save for 2008, which of course, he was deployed!). One of those times it was simply from On-base to Off-base. I'm that antsy.
Needless to say, I like change :) I change the decor on my counter almost daily.
For the most part, I, too, leave it all where I first put it!! Occasionally, I will change a thing or two, but usually it isn't until the "thing" is BEYOND old and exhausted!!! However I do like to change up the way I do the Christmas decorations each year...Wonder????
A first for me and my husband would be rearranging our furniture and not arguing about it! I love to rearrange - unfortunately I have can't visualize and so I end up changing it up like 8 times before finalizing on an arrangement. This annoys my husband and so he steps in and tries to tell me how it would look best. Yes, he's always right but that's beside the point. :)
I am a chronic furniture rearranger. Has something to do with my :OC" - I leave of the "D" because it is certainly not a disorder!
My husband used to tell people that he could never come into the house in the dark, because he was never sure where the furniture would be when he got home.
I just love rearranging! If I can't get new furniture, I feel better if I just find it a new position in the house!
Beth
I love to rearrange. I've been in my "double wide cottage" for ten years now and every room has been painted at least once. Now as far as furniture, I've been pretty happy with the arrangement for several years but even just an end-table swap or arranging accessories differently now and then gives me that fresh, new, exciting feeling.
You're hilarious Beth! I wish I could come to your house and teach you something about your home's "chi".
LOVE YOU!!!
I have to admit that once I have something the way I like it, I am not inclined to change it. Several years ago I put electric candles on the mantle for Christmas. I liked them so much that I kept them there. When taking the decorations down this year, I finally decided they had to go. My daughter was really stressed when I took them down. I fear I am passing on the legacy of designer inflexibiity...time to switch things up!
That's funny because I was a similar conversation just last night talking about not have the decorating gene.
I could careless where the furniture goes as long as things are not cluttered. Once furniture is set in a place - it stays there until ready to change.
In fact, I need help with my bedroom - walls are all bare - for 2 years now.
I actually have always enjoyed moving furniture around. When I was 10 years old, I finally got a room of my own and I changed it around all the time. When I first got married, I moved furniture around all the time also! We didn't have much money so it made me feel like I was redecorating all the time. Over the years, I perfected moving furniture by myself by putting rugs under the heavy stuff and pulling it over the wooden floors. Then they came out with "moving men". Wonderful invention! I do remember one funny story about moving furniture around: My husband works long hours during tax season and he finally asked me to leave a light on in the rooms where I had rearranged furniture that day so he wouldn't run into tables and chairs anymore! Beth you must try moving just one more piece around. It's fun!
haha! Look at you stepping out - go Beth!
It can be very lonely living alone, but one of the advantages (besides always controlling the remote) is that you can do whatever you want with furniture anytime.
That said, I do like to shift things around periodically. I move the furniture in the living room in the fall & spring, but basically just flip it from one side to the other.
Some of my changes are because of my dog. I had a small table in the hallway for years, but now my dog sleeps in that area, so I moved the table to another room to give her more space. I used to change my bedroom around once in a while, but now I'll keep the bed near the door so I can see my dog as she sleeps. And I used to keep a piano bench by the front window for her to get on to look outside (she doesn't have the strength to jump up on it anymore), but now I only use it on its side to block off the kitchen when I'm not home (she slips on the kitchen floor). And I had to move her dishes into the living room so she can stay on the carpet.
I am not good at decorating, but I am good at painting. My house has looked like a bachelorette pad, functional but not homey. A couple friends came over and gave me some tips on colors, so most of the house has had a makeover in the last year.
A lot of things I picked based on biblical reasons - Corinthian White color paint in my study room, Jerusalem Gold tiles on my kitchen backsplash (with Chocolate accents). And in my prayer room, I picked Aqua Marina (Jesus is the living water, and a marina is where small craft plug in and recharge). It is a very cool sky blue color, and I painted the ceiling as well as the walls to make it feel like a sky, and then painted stars and a moon on the ceiling with glow in the dark paint. So when it's dark you can sit in there and look up at all the little specs of light. Always makes me think about God placing and naming the stars. (I also painted an airplane with a contrail on the ceiling - it looks so cool!)
I did add some things to my bedroom wall recently - a picture of the Chateau de Chombord (same castle used on the cover of The Inheritance) and my framed Property Deed from the study guide!

This post is so FUNNY because in the 8 years that my husband and I have been in our house, we have never rearranged our living room furniture. Mind you, we have TALKED about it but have never put feet to those words. My husband was off from work last week and on Wednesday I came home from work and he was working on rearranging the furniture.....it looks great!
