The Simple Things

My dearest Siestas, how are you? I have missed you! Before you go and get too overprotective, yes, I am resting and, no, I am not overdoing it. I don't have any choice. Except to come home from the hospital, I have not been out of a gown in 6 days nor even so much as walked to the mailbox. Our family has been through quite a journey over the last couple of months, intensifying greatly toward the time of surgery and its results. I have so much to tell you - and so many funny things to tell you - when I am a little stronger. For now, please know that I have been so grateful for your prayers and have felt them! I am doing as well as I possibly could be, thank You, my gracious Abba. Sore. Still dealing with significant nausea, which you might pray about since I need to get back to my normal weight. But don't go praying twenty five extra pounds on me. I know the power of Siesta prayer! My prognosis is great and I am told I will feel like a new person in several months.

More than anything, for me, this season is about getting in some solitary confinement with my faithful, determined God. I have longed to be out of the whirlwind to hear Him in the softest silence again and will relish every single second of this quietness. When I was too nauseated to write or read after surgery, I just whispered to Him from my bed and let the tears of tenderness wash the pillowcase. I am now able to read again, which is not only my work. It is also my hobby. I have a brand new novel and a brand new Bible study by an author I deeply esteem and I am slowly breaking into both. I will have much of this week to myself with Him and I will savor every second of it. As God alone could have it, my man had a tremendously important work project away from home this coming week and I insisted on him fulfilling it. He'd worked too hard if I didn't absolutely have to have him here. I was recovering well and in great hands with both my dear (and blood) sisters for the weekend and now I am now back in the hands of my beloved firstborn.

Amanda has been Melissa's and my hero through this whole ordeal. I don't have to tell you that we three girls are thick as thieves. We carefully weighed out what Melissa should do regarding my surgery and recovery and, despite her sobs and uncertainties, I was adamant she stay in Atlanta unless we got some kind of bad news. At that point, she - and my sweet Colin - would have boarded a plane immediately. She is in the final week of her Fall semester for her seminary degree and it would have thrown a grenade smack in the middle of months of hard work. She'd paid too high a price for it to go up in smoke and those are my sentiments rather than hers.

Amanda has been incredible. I have no words for her. Her strength and tenacity have left us slack jawed. Amanda's always been able to hold her own in a strong-willed family but she's done more than hold her own these last 7 days. She's hardly left my side and, because I had a bad reaction to the general anesthesia (never have before!), she had her hands full. Try not to think too much about that. How she has balanced all this with her young family is a testimony of God's grace and the love Curtis Wayne Jones has for his mother-in-law. I am so grateful to them all.

But those are really not the reasons I'm writing you today. We are a very open family and share our feelings freely with one another so I don't need a blog to tell Keith, Amanda, Curtis, Melissa and Colin how much I love and appreciate them. I do that face to face. I'm writing to you because of a very simple thing God has done for me for Christmas. When Keith pulled out of the driveway with a heavy heart several days ago, he summoned our two fine college-age nephews, Ben and Joe Meadows, to drive to Houston from College Station and go pick out their Aunt Beth the best Christmas tree possible and set it up in my den. The boys love Keith so much, despite the interminably hard time he gives them, that they simply call him by the endearment, "Uncle." Well, let me be more honest here. "Skunkle" is what they really call him. They and my father-in-law (my dad, in every sense of the word) set out for the most terrific tree an old home with low ceilings can sport.

The plan was to also get down the Christmas decorations from the attic and hang them for me but I was still too weak at that time to even tell them what kind of containers to look for. "Are you sure, Aunt Beth? We can do it! He'll have our heads if we don't!"

"I'm sure. You let your Aunt Beth handle your Uncle Keith."

After they left, I walked in the kitchen to fix myself some hot peppermint tea and saw a gift wrapped in Christmas tissue sitting on the end of the counter. I remembered, then, that Amanda mentioned having brought something home from church for me the previous Sunday. It was "To Beth, Merry Christmas! Love, Sherry." That's one of my best buddies, Sherry Webster. She and her husband Greg are two of our closest friends. They also have young adult children and grandchildren and share our love for God and rough Texas terrain. (Yes, we have normal best friends and relationships. Couldn't live without them.) I took off the tissue and it was one of the most beautiful Christmas ornaments I'd ever seen. A crimson and pearl Cross hanging from a ribbon. I walked straight to the tree and hung the single ornament.

No lights on it.

No tinsel.

No angel perched at the top.

Just one crimson Cross right in the middle of the tree.

God has me home for the holidays for healing. For restoration. For a fresh return to the simple things. I've spent the entire year balancing the beauty and complexities of women's insecurities and the Book of Revelation. How's that for some whiplash? And I have loved every second of it. God is not miffed at me for working hard. He is the One who called me to the harvest field just as He called you. He just wants me to rediscover Sabbath rest amid the work and He's chosen to begin with a crash course. I am gradually taking the ribbon off the gift of simplicity that God is giving me for Christmas this year. I plan to unwrap it slowly and deliberately. 2010 will start soon enough and I'll pack a suitcase and be on another plane. But not the same. If I am, I will have missed something huge. Something vital. Something life-changing between Jesus and me. And I do not plan to miss it for this world. It's why He has me here.

We are not getting lots of presents this year at the Moores. You have no idea how rare that is. Keith Moore believes in a big Christmas and that even a pair of earrings is wrapped separately from the matching necklace and socks are never to be in the same box as shirts. He believes in lots of gifts to open on Christmas morning even if many of them are under five bucks. Not this year. I never had time to shop before I was laid flat on my back. And that's okay.

Because this is a year to return to the simplest truths like John 3:16. Take it slowly now and in the version from which you first learned it.

For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whosoever believes in Him will not perish but have everlasting life.

A Christmas Tree means nothing if not for the Cross. The Joneses were supposed to decorate my tree for me today...but I'm not quite ready. I think I'll keep it just like this for a while. We'll eat a little something instead.

I pray simple things over you this season, my dear Siestas. Couldn't we all use a moment's Sabbath?

I will look forward to being in touch with you every couple of days that I'm up to it. I won't go back to work at LPM until 2010 nor will I work here at home but this sweet communication we have here in Siestaville, on days like this, is not really work for me. Words are the way I process things. On the days that it's too much, I promise I won't get on line. If I'm on here, it will strictly be because I want to be. Thank you for caring. I care so much for you, too.

I love you, Sweet Things.

Dear Beth,

Enjoy your time with the Lord as he brings rest and healing to you. I pray your strength will return soon and you will be pain and nausea free. Continue to soak in the peace and joy of the season in its simplest form. Surgery has a humbling effect on a person and has made me look at my life more honestly. I know I am enjoying the true reason for the season in a much more sincere way. The trappings of the holidays just aren't there for me this year.

God bless you and your sweet family. Have a Merry Christmas and a Happy, Healthy, Blessed New Year.

Beth, as you know prayers are being lifted up for you. Our God has a way of getting our attention, even if we think we are giving him our time, I've learned He is a jealous God. Well, take the time he is giving you to recoup, refresh, and redefine His love for you. I am so proud of Amanda and Melissa, but Amanda deserve an extra special Hurrah for doing what our God tells children, take care of your elders. It is so refreshing to hear how she has put her life on hold to honor the Lord by caring for you. LISTEN to the doctors and rest and in the long run you will be thankful.

Praying for you Mama Siesta, and hoping you don't have cancer and need chemo/radiation.

I of course have no idea what you're going through, but (as a random guess) If you had to have a hyst, I've been there. At the age of 27 as a "never known a man" girl, I had one...it was the hardest thing I've ever done...b/c I have always wanted to be a mother...but God used that experience to get a hold of my wayward heart and onto His path for me (including seminary).

Hoping you have a good recovery...take care of yourself, please! Love & hugs! :)

I pray for many blessings for you as you rest in the presence of our Father.

Thank you for all you do. Enjoy this earned "break".

Your blog is a life line to our Lord right now -- after reading HIS word, so thank you. I stand, no humbly sit amazed that HE would LOVE me this much -- to help me through my 'time' of struggle as I read your struggle, as your words feel like they are coming straight from HIM to me. Thank you. Glad to read you had strength enough to type.
And if I were you, I would check out some Pumpkin Pie Blizzards from DQ - if there is any time to eat one - I would say NOW is the time! That would be my request.

Blessings and a complete and speedy recovery so you can add a few more ornaments to that tree. Then again, if it is only the cross that gets left there - that IS enough.
Amen.

I am a siesta that has benefited from your Bible studies more than a thousand words could say. When I first started reading your bog, I was taken aback. Because you are a girly girl and I am not. I could not believe someone who had effected (Yes, the e spelling) my life so powerfully could be so girly. But as I continue to read your blog and understand 'how the other half lives', I am blessed to see posts like this. Posts that make my eyes water, my heart overflow and my prayers go up on your behalf.

I love you, way different siesta from me, and I love the way you reach right into my heart with your REALNESS and bless my socks off. With an undecorated Christmas tree. You are so annointed and someday... with your help...the rest of us will wake up and realize we are too.

Merry Christmas, Beth.

Dear Mama Beth,

Your words were read so gingerly as to not miss one single word. You have been heavy on my heart for the last few weeks, as I have sensed something wasn't quite right. Then yesterday when I read Amanda's post, I just wanted to board a plane and see if there was someway I could get through your front door to give you a HUG and just kneel on your floor and pray for you. I've been praying healing for you, peace and comfort, and a calm tummy too. I had surgery 6 months ago, and I KNOW with out a doubt when people were praying for me. I literally felt the Holy Spirit knitting together my flesh for a full and healed surgical site. I have been praying the Holy Spirit would show you with such a tender peace his intricate healing stitches. You are soooooooo loved by all - we siestas are so blessed to be able to kneel in healing prayer for YOU!!

Be at peace during your time of sabbath and may you feel in so many different and blessed ways your Father's arms wrapped so tenderly around you - He loves You so MUCH!

Love you Mama Beth,

Beth, So glad to see this post today and to "see" you on here. I commented on Amanda's post the other day and told her that I believe we are doing our healing "together!" I had a total hysterectomy on Wednesday as part of my treatment for breast cancer, which I was diagnosed with last year at age 30. My hubby, Jack, and I have 3 children ages 14, 12, and 6 and I believe that God's allowance in us having Tyler at SUCH a young age is because He knew what our future held and I would need to make this hysterectomy decision in order to increase my chances of having a long, healthy, and happy life. Praise God, fertility played no part in our decision because we knew we were finished having children when we had our little Katie when I was 25. We did not have to make the heart-wrenching decision that many other families have to make. Thank.You.LORD.

I, too, have decided to Be Still this holiday season and spend my recovery time soaking in the love and awesome-ness of our Lord. How He has healed me and continues to be my Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, and Prince of Peace not just at this time of year but every second of every day.

I pray that 2010 starts for both us with changed and refreshed hearts and a renewed love for our Awesome God!

Happy healing to you, and Merry Christmas to your family. Love you!
Love, Erica Griffin

PS- I have SO enjoyed being a part of the Siesta Scripture Memory Team! I have missed some throughout the year due to treatments and such but have gotten so much out of it when I have participated. I LOVE how Scripture will just roll off my tongue right when I need it most!

Dearest Beth,
How precious your post is this morning. We, too, are experiencing a God-ordained simple Christmas this year. My family and I and a team of very good friends have for years produced a very special Christmas concert that has become a tradition for several churches here in our area. Due to several health issues and one very, very serious one, we canceled the program for this year. We all knew without a doubt that God had ordained this as a a 'year of healing, rest and restoration.' We gladly have spent the time loving on each other and praising and thanking Him for the many blessings He has worked through it all. How precious, simple and blessed this season has been already!

I am praying the same things for you (and can see that the prayer is already answered before I speak it). Savor this precious quiet time of healing. You are safe in His arms...Jesus love you, this you know!

Blessings to you, my Teacher. Immersed in His Omnipresence, may you soak up more and more of Him, refreshing your soul as you prepare for an abundant harvest time in 2010!

Beth,
My husband and I are praying for you. He watches your Bible studies when I preview them at home, then smiles and waits patiently through the "girlie stuff", knowing that he will get the meat that you so consistently serve in your studies. He is the sweetest husband of 33 years and has a better wife because of your obedience in ministry.

I wish I could bring you some chicken soup. Since I can't here's what someone once told me to take when nauseous:
Mix the juice of 1/2 lemon with 1 tsp salt and 1 tsp sugar. Put this in a glass with about 1/2 cup crushed ice. Stir so that the ice begins to melt. Sip slowly. After my surgery, it helped tremendously.

God is Faithful and we know He will use even this. May you and your family have the sweetest Merry Christmas ever!
Lots of love,
Jennifer

I CANNOT believe my God. He is telling me the same thing Ms. Beth...to remember Sabbath Rest. It keeps popping up to me everywhere in the last few weeks. Just before I hopped online to see how you were doing, I read my Daily Bread for today and it too talked about Sabbath Rest.

Yesterday I called a family meeting (consisting of me, my husband, my toddler and our dog); I said "listen up...Saturdays are going to change around here. We're going to slow everything down and just BE. Be together; not running around doing errands or watching TV in separate rooms. We're going to use it as a day to HONOR GOD and reconnect with Him and each other." It was just our 1st time but I plan to keep it up and it was great. It was quiet. Peaceful. Slower. Connected. Respected. Loved.

Seems there's a movement of The Spirit in God's Body that His people, especially people in ministry as a vocation, to respect the Sabbath regularly and trust Him to take care of your needs as we refocus our attentions to the high value of the family He's blessed us with.

Sometimes I feel like my husband and I pass each other coming and going during the week and after a while it just doesn't feel good in my spirit. So this reconnection is vital to our family's spiritual health right now.

Here's to God giving you the gift of slowing down even though it was a very painful road to get there. I strongly believe God wants you all to Himself for the next few weeks and I pray you have the strength to continue with the SMT celebration.

What if this event was orchestrated in the heavenlies just so WE could minister to YOU???!!! Wouldn't that be a hoot?

Rest, rest, quiet rest.

Mrs. Beth- I have no idea what ailment you were fighting, but I gather from your words and Amanda's that it was frightening to say the least. I am so glad there is peace in the prognosis and I am so glad to hear you're on the mend.

It is so nice to hear from you on the blog again. Enjoy your family and your simple Christmas this year.

AND- your nephews found you the absolute best Christmas tree I've EVER seen. Wow- who needs lights and ornaments- tell Mr. Keith's servants that was a job well done.

Merry Christmas. TAKE A NAP!!! :)

I absolutely LOVE what you wrote about looking forward to spending some one-on-one time with God! We are on track to hopefully adopt a baby boy in about six weeks after three years of waiting on our family to start, and to say that this time in life is heart-wrenching is an understatement. The week of Christmas, I have NO work (PTL!), and I am counting down the days until I can just sit alone with the Lord and prepare my heart for whatever is to come. There is definitely no other way to go into this and come out the other side not only unscathed, but rejoicing, except to get a completely solid and trusting confidence in Him and His will. Praying daily for you, that you will heal, and also that God will make Himself even sweeter to you in these next three weeks than He already has!

Sweet Beth, since late August, I have been praying for you and I really didn't know why, but I firmly felt it was about rest. So I have been praying for you to Sabbath. And though I pray for all of your family and love them so, this burden to pray has been very strong. Praying for you to find simplicity and joy and fullness of life with Jesus during this season of your journey. Love you...love your family--you are my friends, not a professional distant feeeling, but friends whom I and my family (really, my kids pray for y'all) love and pray for with joy.

Beth,

Are you on pain medication post surgery? That stuff always makes me incredibly nauseated...from the time I wake in the recovery room until they switch me to Tylenol. Major nausea. That could be the reason for your continuing nausea. I hate the stuff. Take it from a pharmacist who wants to see you feeling better....get off of it as soon as possible, if indeed you are on it.

Praying that you will feel better every day.

I'm glad to hear you are feeling better and are taking things slowly and enjoying the simple things. When it is all said and done they are the only real important things.

I have a story to share about Deeper Still in OKC. I had planned on attending since it first posted but sometimes I have to work so I could not purchase tickets early I was just going to buy at the door. On Friday morning I went to start my car to go to work and it didn't start. I got a ride to work and after school a friend took me home and we got it started. I grabbed my bible and went straight to a car repair place. I needed an oil change and asked if they would check the battery. I needed a new one and they only said it would take a few minutes. Long story short after several hours and repairing a part that broke when they were changing the battery I headed for the Cox center knowing the event started in 12 minutes. I then got stuck in construction traffic and then traffic for the Thunder game. The old me would have just gone home but I said God I know I need to be there help me overcome these obstacles I'm hitting at every turn. I finally made it and went to the door to find the quickest way to the box office and the sweet lady at the door took one look at me and said are you here by yourself. When I said yes she said she had a ticket just for me. I was so thankful and offered to pay but she said God had laid it on her heart to save it for just the right person. I was truly blessed.

I used the extra money to help two different families that are struggling this Christmas so it is a gift that keeps giving.

Praying your health is restored soon.

Merry Christmas
Lisa

Dear Beth,

So very glad to hear you are recovering from surgery nicely (except for the nausea). You have been on my heart lately to lift up in prayer, so when I saw the post about surgery I just said WOW! God is so faithful and loving. I love the ornament for your tree, it's gorgeous! Sometimes just a tree is really all we need with one special ornament. I have a potted noble fir tree this year in my little unfurnished apartment. I just moved to Houston in September from Colorado (left my dream and belongings in storage there) and can't seem to stop crying over it. On the last Revelation Bible Study, I bought a copy of Anita Carmen's book "Transformed for a Purpose. I couldn't understand why I had to move to Houston except for practical things such as discipline of finances and health (which are HUGE when fulfilling your God given destiny). I am thinking that school is the next step for me at the Dallas Theological Seminary.

God has used your ministry in my life for 10 complete years now, starting with "A Heart Like His" and just finishing Esther this spring (which by the way was GARGANGUOUS msp??) I was able to make about half of the Revelation studies, which I think you did a phenomenal job on by the way! I am getting free in some areas of strongholds right now and can feel the chains breaking. Almost everyone of your studies have been part of my 10 year process. Unfortunately I am a strongwilled one as well, but God in His mercy and Grace just doesn't let go! I wish I could help you out in some way through this to show you just a little of my gratitude for all the times God has used you to teach me. Even just as recently as yesterday, the teaching Approaching God's Word. I am a flight attendant with Continental Airlines and have tried at least 6 or 7 times to listen to that one study on my iphone on break but always fall asleep!! HAHA, I will listen again today (it is getting in my spirit though). I thought by now I would have at least seen you in the airport or had you on one of my flights! I guess that is God's mercy on you because I would have talked your ear off with ALL my stories!

Hang in there Beth, and get COMPLETELY RESTORED because I am really looking forward to A Heart Like His in January where it all began for me!

Debbie

2009 has been one of the most challenging years of spiritual warfare in my entire life. I honestly was unsure that I would survive the month of August. But God consistently assures me that I am His own, and that I am victorious in the battle. He dropped two of your studies in my lap this fall, and I am currently working through the remastered Breaking Free. Without belaboring the message, your work and the study you have encouraged me to do has been hugely instrumental in God reorienting my life and banishing the spirits of fear and despair that sought my life, both figuratively and literally. You have been an encourager, a warrior and a weapon of God. You deserve your own time to heal and rest and enjoy God's Presence before He calls you back onto the field. Savor the quiet. He may have had to knock you down in order to hold you still long enough that He could love and minister to you the way you have loved and ministered to everyone else. Thank you for your work, and know that I thank God for you every day.

Rest friend...I will be prayin for "all" of your family! And I hope you know the impact you have and continue to have on so many lives. It wouldn't surprise me if it would take eternity for the LORD to show you it all...and I hope we all(those you have impacted) get to sit there with you and see your beautiful face when He does it!

Psalm 84:11-12 is my prayer for you, "...No good thing does He withhold from those who walk uprightly..."

Love you sista!

I love your tree.

If I were you, I just might leave it alone.

It's a wonderful reminder of simplicity. That's what is so amazing about Jesus' birth anyway. You can't get much more simple than a stable.

I am thankful that you are growing stronger by the moment.

Enjoy the peace and quiet and rest. Those things are very much a gift from God!

I will be continuing to pray as you continue to heal.

It's so good to hear from you! Knowing that you're home and recovering is great news. It sounds like you've struck a chord with many of us with the idea of a simple, quiet Christmas! I'm sorry that you've had to go through so much anquish but it does show that God is with us through the good times and bad and you being able to share this will help us all.

I love your Christmas tree, the guys did a great job picking it out! The lights are going on ours as I type (which means I'm not doing it!) and I think we'll decorate it tomorrow.

The fact that Amanda has stepped up to take care of you tells me that she learned that from her sweet Mama! The apple doesn't fall far from the tree and I know that it's just killing Melissa that she wasn't there for your surgery! I've been in her shoes and it's very hard. My prayers are with her too!

I'm praying for you, Sweet Beth, that you'll feel physically and spiritually renewed by the time 2010 begins. You're a wonderful, loving teacher and mentor to me and many of us on this blog!

Christmas blessings!

Ahh sweet Beth, you've been heavy on my heart for some time. I was blessed to see you in Memphis and just felt that you weren't "yourself."

Please don't get me wrong, you were wonderful and the Lord used you in a MIGHTY way. That Revelation piece made me want to stand up in my chair and shout. (But it was a folding chair and if you knew my clumsy self you'd understand why I didn't). No, there was just 'something' and I knew you needed prayer. But then don't we all.

I was SO thrilled to see your name on that blog post! Glad to "hear" your voice and praying for a quick recovery and a sweet time with Jesus.

Take care and get well. I'll see you in Birmingham a year from now at Deeper Still.

Praying for you to have a speedy recovery and for you to feel God's presence at your side as you heal. That God would delight you this seasons with glimpses of his beauty, a tangable touch of his presence, a renewed sense of wonder, and daily he would reveal himself in the quietness and stillness of your resting time. That it would be a sweet time of rest for you with your Savior. That you would have time to enjoy long talks with him and you would be filled with his joy and his peace. Just praying for God to take good care of you and love on you and provide everything you need. Praying for your family too.

Dear Beth,
I read your post with tears in my eyes because this year, more than any other, I have thirsted so for just what you described (minus the surgery). The Christmas season gets so filled with one gathering after another and the business of Christmas shopping, Christmas programs, parties, etc., that we sometimes miss out on the most important part. While it is a joy to gather with friends and family, there is nothing sweeter than precious quiet moments alone with Almighty God.

I'm so thankful that your prognosis is great and I'll continue praying for you. Thanks for inspiring me even in the midst of your recovery! You are such a sweet friend. Enjoy your Sabbath rest!

Love you!

Beth....

So good to hear that you are feeling better and that God is giving His strength day by day.

Not sure if this will help, but I started my nursing career helping patients just out of open heart surgery. When they struggled with nausea, I used to have them take tiny sips of ginger ale or some other type on clear carbonated drink. Then we would have them breath in through their nose and out through their mouth with pursed lips slowly. You can alternate back and forth while lying as still as possible, and often the nausea would subside.

Hope that might help a bit.

In the midst of all you are going through physically, you encouraged me in my walk withe the Lord today. Has just been a sad day for me...but your blog was a sweet gift.

Heaps of blessings on you :)

Love,

Holly

It is truly answered prayer to hear that you are doing better and feeling some healing. I will continue to pray for full relief from the nausea so you can gain your strength and weight back. Treasure your time and know that you are loved so much by so many.

Dearest Beth & Family,

Thank you for sharing your news of surgery and recovery with all of us. It makes me feel like family. You are on the prayer list, as of mass this morning, at Holy Cross Catholic Church in Las Cruces, New Mexico. Many faithful Bible students (in our very ecumenical group) have you in their prayers here. Thank you for loving and teaching ALL of us in the Body of Christ! We thank God for your willingness to accept and use the many wonderful gifts He gives you. Our Thursday morning group lifts you and LPM up in prayer regularly. We just wanted you to know you have true "siestas" over here where we truly know the meaning of siesta! I sure hope this recovery includes green & red chile! Have a wonderful, restful, blessed CHRISTmas siesta. Love to all!

Hey Beth,

So happy to hear from you! I've been thinking about you & praying for you a lot since Amanda told us the news. Glad you're getting some rest and quiet time with the Savior!

I love the simplicity of your tree!! I got married this summer, so this is my first Christmas as a newlywed! Even though my hubby and I are going "home" to be with our families at the end of the week, I insisted we have our own tree for the couple of weeks leading up to the season. It's up and trimmed, but we're still lacking a tree topper. All we have right now is a bow. I have looked and looked for the perfect tree topper. But, the problem is, I really had my heart set on a cross. Haven't been able to find one yet. For some reason (I promise it's not legalism), I just couldn't bear to put an angel or a star at the top. (Growing up, we always had an angel or a star, so I have nothing against that. I just have had my heart set, literally, on the cross.) So, when I saw the picture of your tree, it was an image of my prayer for Christmas this year! Oh that we would be overcome with the meaning of the cross this Christmas!

Love you and praying for a fresh advent & Sabbath for you!

P.S. I'm sure you've already read it, but if you haven't, Mark Buchanan's The Rest of God has blessed my thinking about Sabbath this year.

Beth, I come from a family who had a very large budget. My grandfather was in the oil business and my dad was a stockbroker. We were always taught that all came from the Lord and that it came with a great responsiblility to give as He would have us to give but then I married a man who came from the complete opposite and we both became teachers in one of the poorest school districts. We have always had simple Christmases with our three boys but have never said anything. This Christmas we may not be able to give the one "big gift" that we have always given and we told our boys. There response was "Mom, it's ok--But can we all eat together" What a gift to my heart this Christmas that my boys never saw the different Christmases from mine as simple. Enjoy your simple Christmas and enjoy His presence as a present to you. The greatest gift of all.

Merry Christmas To All of the SIESTAS!

If I were ol' Santa, you know what I'd do

I'd dump silly gifts that are given to you

And deliver some things just inside your front door

Things you have lost, but treasured before.

I'd give you back all of your maidenly vigor,

And to go along with it, a neat tiny figure.

Then restore the old color that once graced your hair

Before rinses and bleaches took residence there.

I'd bring back the shape with which you were gifted

So things now suspended need not be uplifted.

I'd draw in your tummy and smooth down your back

Till you'd be a dream in those tight fitting slacks.

I'd remove all your wrinkles and leave only one chin

So you wouldn't spend hours rubbing grease on your skin

You'd never have flashes or queer dizzy spells

And you wouldn't hear noises like ringing of bells.

No sore aching feet and no corns on your toes

No searching for spectacles when they're right on your nose

Not a shot would you take in your arm, hip or fanny

From a doctor who thinks you're a nervous old granny.

You'd never have a headache, so no pills would you take.

And no heating pad needed since your muscles won't ache.

Yes, if I were Santa, you'd never look stupid

You'd be a cute little chick with the romance of a cupid.

I'd give a lift to your heart when those wolves start to whistle

And the joys of your heart would be light as a thistle.

But alas! I'm not Santa. I'm simply just me

The matronest of matrons you ever did see.

I wish I could tell you all the symptoms I've got

But I'm due at my doctor's for an estrogen shot.

Even though we've grown older this wish is sincere

Merry Christmas to you and a Happy New Year!!

Beth-

Some of my favorite and most meaningful Christmases have been when my kids were little and happened to be sick at Christmas. I sat at home and held them in the quiet of the moment, usually alone. No rushing to buy the last present or rushing to get to someone's house or rushing to cook one more thing. Just me, a baby and God.

I pray that your recovery will be quick and routine with no complications.

Merry Christmas faithful one.

My prayers will continue for you and your precious family....and I just had one thought to add while perusing the other Siesta's loving posts.....what would it be like if we had the same level of concern and love for ALL of the women in our lives? We know that we have it within ourselves -- we just don't always let it come forth and shine. That would be my additional prayer, then, that each of would find it within ourselves to love the other women in our lives -- no matter how "unloveable" they may be at times -- and let it all be to the glory of our God. Thank you, dear Beth, for all that you do, and all that you have become.

Four years ago, I was recovering during Christmas from a big surgery, and it was so very strange, so different. I told Carole Carson I didn't want to leave that place of sweet fellowship because I was afraid I would forget. Though the pain was intense, the leaning into His Arms was a priceless gift. I pray that same gift over you.

A word about receiving--sometimes it's especially hard for the one who always is giving grace to be a gracious receiver. It's your turn. Receive His Love through all the acts of kindness others are showing you. Let them in.

Glad you have a good book (or ten :)around. And all the real Coke you want! Keep resting and receiving. I'm praying for much healing and for a blessed season of restoration. Love, Annette

So glad to hear you are Ok. I SO wanted to attend your conference in OKC and was planning on it but hadn't pre-regstered...A year ago in November my dear mom was diagnosed with Pancreatic cancer. Her prognosis was not good (3-5 months). After lots of prayer and discussion with our three older kids (11, 13, & 16 at the time, we also have a four year old we adopted from China 1 1/2 yrs ago) we felt led to pack up and spend the winter/spring with her and my dad. Helping out if needed, caring for her if it came to that but most of all spending good quality time together and praying for healing here on earth. I have lived in TX since I married my very supportive husband 18 years ago but grew up in MN and wanted to just do "life" with my mom while we had time. Mark stayed here but flew up when he could and we had an AWESOME winter/spring. I didn't pre-register because although her reports last spring were SO good she began to do poorly this fall and passed away one month ago tomorrow (the 13th). I intend to blog on MY blog tonight about what she taught me in her death....THE HUGEST lessons which have also humbled me to my knees and I am still processing it all. I say all of this to just let you know what an HONOR it was to serve my mom this last year. Never could I repay her for all she did for me during her life. I know your girls feel the same way. This Christmas will be hard as we will head back up to MN but we all know she is now celebrating with HIM....SUCH a glorious thought. My prayers are for your complete restoration of health!!! Take care of yourself and let those around you serve you...!!!! What lessons we learn in it!!!!

Sweet and dear Beth,

I feel like I've just had a Sunday visit with you, and I can't tell you how touched my heart is. Truly, I felt as maybe I was sitting by your side and hearing from you. From across the way in Atlanta this evening, I will sign this blog and then go to my frequented closet on your behalf. Beth, I pray that this Christmas will present itself through our one and only TRUE friend and Savior, Jesus, in an amazing joyful and peaceful time. Savor the simplicity and savor the talking and communion with dear ones. Beth, please pray for an unspecified healing in my family, as our Christmas and new year may be very different. My heart could break into a million pieces due to grief if I let Satan have his way. Please lift us up in prayer. This life would be too much to bear without our God as center in our minds and hearts.

I send my love and wishes for BLESSED CHRISTmas time of healing.

Praying you'll recover soon enough to enjoy this season, but not so soon that you feel tempted to over do it! :) I'm so glad you're healing and that you are resting and carefully guarding your health. We siestas need you around! God bless you and keep you dear Beth. You and your family are very much loved and cherished.

Siesta Momma, it is soooo good to "hear" your voice. Rest easy and enjoy the blessing that comes in this trial.

I don't know who authored this but I love it and treasure it as my special meditation during the busy-ness of the holidays. May it bless ya'll too:

Let us keep Christmas softly,
Apart from crowds and noise and vain display.
Let us hang garlands fresh of prayer and praise
All love entwined in glad array
In deep chambers of the heart where He,
The Holy Child, alone may see and gladdened be

I'm sitting here weeping because I felt your love for your siestas with such intensity. I'm sorry for your season of suffering, but our precious Lord wastes not a thing! Your time of Sabbath will reap tremendous benefits.

One quick thing I wanted to share: My dear pastor/husband's message today was from Luke 10:38-42 - not a typical Christmas message. But this is the word from the Lord for us today: This year, have a "Mary" Christmas. What a word it was! My prayer is that my Christmas will be simple and quiet, as I sit at His feet and "learn of Him" (Matt. 11:29). That - along with prayers for physical healing - will be my prayer for you, as well. Amazing how we can feel such love and kinship toward those we know only thru DVD Bible studies, books, conferences and blogs. You're in my heart, dear siesta. Bless you & yours during this sweet, sweet holy season!

And one more thought: This year of Scripture memorization has blessed my socks off! (Wish I could join you for the Siesta Scripture memory weekend.)

I'm crying while I read this about you. I am so sorry for whatever you're going through. Thank you for all you give and even for allowing us to peek in on how you walk this type of a season out. You are a gift to us, the Body of Christ. You encourage me to love Him more, know Him more, serve Him and His people more and I always desire the Word more after I've listened to you.
"I raise my eyes toward the mountains. Where will my help come from? My help comes from the LORD, the Maker of heaven and earth!" Psalm 121:1,2
Have you heard the David Crowder song on his new cd...JOY and SORROWS. I know it will minister to you.

Love YOU, Beth! I prayed over you with tears today...not sad tears...just heart-felt. It's so awesome how so many of us can band together in prayer, what power! May you, in the stillness, hear God's whispers of love to you.

It is truly a God-thing that we become sisters as we share our lives on this blog. Who knew technology would have such an amazing affect on us? Enjoy your tree, a cup of peppermint tea, and the quiet. Check in as you can. We will learn about the simple things from you, I am sure. Many blessings.

Sweet Beth, I am so glad you are home and resting. Thank you for speaking your heart for rest with our savior this Christmas as you recover. I have been preparing to begin chemo on Wednesday for the next year. The first month will be 5 days a week, including Christmas Day. I am choosing to follow you in your attitude of enjoying God anyway this season. THANK YOU for your example! I long to be that kind of example for my 3 and 5 year olds. I will be praying for quick healing for you as well as complete rest!

Father, I come before you in this time, lifting our dear Beth up to you in prayer. I pray right now that Your healing hand would be upon her. I also pray that You would be with Keith, Amanda, Curtis, Jackson, Annabeth, Melissa, and Collin. Help them to continue to be just a monumental help to Beth at this time. I also pray that Beth would be strengthened in Your Word like never before, and to be closer to You like never before, in this time that You have given her. I'm sure it's got to be hard for her not to be out there, doing Your work, but she is resting and recuperating like You would want her to do. Lord, give her the peace that passes all understanding. Give her strength, and let her go back into Your ministry fresh anew in 2010. In Jesus name I pray, Amen!

Dearest Beth,

It was so wonderful to "hear" from you via this blog post. Ever since finding out about your surgery and difficult recovery, I have been keeping you in my fervent prayers.

Like so many others, I can say that you have had a profound effect on my life. I love Jesus more because your studies and that is the highest compliment I can pay a Bible teacher. :)

I am praying for a full and complete recovery for you, as well as for a most beautiful Christmas season with your wonderful family.

Be blessed. You are loved!

Susan

JESUS is THE gift. That is all we need. I was in Oklahoma City for my very first live event after 10 years of Bible studies with you. My life has been immeasurably blessed by the things you have tied together for me in Holy Scripture. I cannot see it on my own and your gift of teaching is very much recieved. I commit to pray for your healing. Merry Christmas. I think your tree looks perfect just as it is.

Dear Beth,

As I read this post through my reader, the scripture right next to it from my desktop was:

"I will praise thee, O LORD, with my whole heart; I will shew forth all thy marvellous works." - Psalms 9:1 (KJV)

Thank you for always doing that and being an example to all of us. Praying for your continued healing in your physical body and the refreshment He is already giving you this season in your spiritual one.

Blessings,
Dori

It appears that we are in the same place...God's led peace and quiet with Him...alone...a sabbath time....
He has given me all this fog and quiet, cloudy days, with some soft rain and a little snow just for fun. Isn't He the most wonderful? We bless the LORD for carrying you through and will love to hear as He shares new insights with you. But I believe that mostly, it's just for you and your Father.
God Bless the Moores this special Holiday season!
In His Love ~

Thank you for being you ( and thank you to Keith, Amanda and Melissa for sharing you with us ). I love you and appreciate everything you do.

Feel better soon (((((HUGS)))))))

As a side note:
All week I've had that story on my mind about you brushing that elderly fella's hair at the airport and how you listened to God even though you wanted to resist. I don't know why I've been thinking about this ( and it's multiple times a day at that ), but I can't help but smile every single time. God's using that story to stir something in me...I can feel it in my bones. I can tell He's gettin' ready to get bossy about something...hee hee.

I am so glad to see you blogging. I had surgery about 3 weeks and have been down recovering. It is no fun, but I have found that when I am down, I am still and God has shown me a lot in my spiritual life. I have spent most of my days and evenings being silent listening to Him speak. I pray for further healing for you my sister.

I placed you on my Sunday School's prayer list this morning. I felt a little strange telling them about your surgery and nausea--as if I knew you personally--but then I thought, well, I DO know you personally--through your writings, videos, and siestaville. :) I hope that nausea ends soon.
