Disturb Us, Lord

Greetings, My Ladies!

I just wanted to pop in and say a quick hello before I head off to my first day of classes. I've been in new student orientation the past several days but today is the real deal and I can't wait! For those of you who care to know the details, I am working on a Th.M. (Master of Theology) in Biblical Studies at a local seminary just outside of Atlanta limits. This particular Th.M. is a one year advanced Master's program for students who have already completed a Master's degree within the field. There are only five of us in the Th.M. program! The program was right up my alley because it is primarily research oriented and I was looking for something that would help me really grow in my research and writing skills. Not to mention all of my Bible classes assume knowledge of Greek and Hebrew, so I will also grow further in my knowledge of the languages as well. Can't beat that. My classes are the following: Romans, Th.M. Research Seminar, Exegesis of Mark, Christology, Theology of Isaiah and the Exile, and Song of Songs. Pretty sweet schedule, right? Oh, and did I mention that Columbia Theological Seminary is about ten minutes away...? That helped, too. Columbia is Presbyterian and since I am from a different denominational background it will make for a new kind of atmosphere for me. I am really looking forward to being a tad bit out of my comfort zone. Already I have met people from a very wide array of denominations.

We had chapel during orientation and so many things were different about the service. We had a liturgical reading and sang hymns I had never heard of and we did all this in a chapel with beautiful stained glass, a center aisle, and hard wooden pews. I took a few shots of the chapel yesterday because I thought it was so delightful.

But amidst all of the differences in the service, I couldn't believe how many things were exactly the same. First off, the President of the seminary welcomed us during our chapel service with that old and very standard joke, "Welcome to Columbia Theological Cemetery!" If you have been to seminary, you know well how this joke is completely predictable and yet it works every time. Because, unfortunately, it is true. Seminary often ends up being a spiritually dry time unless a student is intentional about not letting it be so and this was exactly what Dr. Hayner preached about. His text was John 5.36-40, a text that has become so very dear to me over the years.

"I have testimony weightier than that of John. For the very work that the Father has given me to finish, and which I am doing, testifies that the Father has sent me. And the Father who sent me has himself testified concerning me. You have never heard his voice nor seen his form, nor does his word dwell in you, for you do not believe the one he sent. You diligently study the Scriptures because you think that by them you possess eternal life. These are the Scriptures that testify about me, yet you refuse to come to me to have life."

The part that really gets me is "You diligently study the Scriptures because you think that by them you possess eternal life." There was a long stretch of time during my first several years of theological education that I did not pray. At all. I sat in classes and sermons and rather than receiving the word of God, I listened for leaders to make a theological mistake. And then I would sit around with other students and we would talk about the theological mistakes and whatnot. And we did and said all of this in the name of piety. We would "humbly" explain how we revered the word of God and we didn't want anyone distorting it or tainting it or mishandling it. Now, don't get me wrong, those kind of statements are appropriate and noble but when you add a very hard heart, a critical spirit, and a lack of intimacy with God to it- well, it simply isn't authentic and things go downhill. Very fast. Now this is not everyone's experience but it was mine. For a season. Thank God He allowed me to live on. My Mom was the most instrumental person in my life in helping guide me out of that dry season. She would often say to me "this is not bearing good fruit in you, Darling... have you spent actual time with the Lord today?" I no longer had the love of God in my heart and it was starting to surface in the way I criticized and looked down on other people and in the way I neglected time with Jesus Himself (see John 5.42).

But the catch here is that during that dry season I was studying Scripture more intensely than I had ever studied it before. Yet I was no longer engaged with the One to whom Scripture points, Jesus. I was no longer receiving life itself. This is a good reminder for all of us who love to study Scripture and my heart leapt for joy when Dr. Hayner preached on this very issue during orientation. Those of us who tend to assume that our spiritual maturity is directly equal to how much Scripture we read on a particular day would do well to keep this verse at the forefront of our minds.

Now, I am not saying that a person can be spiritually mature without reading Scripture but what I am saying is that a person can study Scripture rigorously and not be spiritually mature. Indeed, Jesus said that a person can "diligently study" the Scriptures yet refuse to receive life in Him altogether. The difference here is profound and chilling. There is a right way to read the Scriptures and a wrong way- the wrong way is to read them spiritually detached from the One to whom they point. So, all this to say, I am looking forward to a year drenched in study of the Scripture but I am grateful for the warning and all I know is that I don't want to go back to that dark place again.

I want to end this blog post with a poem that was also a part of our chapel service but coincidentally is a poem that one of my dear Professors from Wheaton used in his classes on the first day. It made me feel at home. You've probably heard it before but it blesses me anew each time I read it.

Disturb us, Lord, when
We are too well pleased with ourselves,
When our dreams have come true
Because we have dreamed too little,
When we arrived safely
Because we sailed too close to the shore.

Disturb us, Lord, when
With the abundance of things we possess
We have lost our thirst
For the waters of life;
Having fallen in love with life,
We have ceased to dream of eternity
And in our efforts to build a new earth,
We have allowed our vision
Of the new Heaven to dim.

Disturb us, Lord, to dare more boldly,
To venture on wider seas
Where storms will show your mastery;
Where losing sight of land,
We shall find the stars.
We ask You to push back
The horizons of our hopes;
And to push into the future
In strength, courage, hope, and love.
[Sir Francis Drake]

The Library... where I'll be spending the bulk of my time. It is a pretty nice sized library for a small seminary. The Librarian told me that almost all of the shelves are Bible and Theology!

Have a great Thursday! It's almost the weekend! Don't you love four day weeks...?

Love to you,

Liss, what an awesome testimony. And I'm loving your pictures! You are an excellent writer already and I can't wait to see how you will grow this year. I love you!

Melissa - I loved the pictures and I can feel the passion and excitement as I read your descriptions of the campus and the library...along with your scheduled classes. My husband is starting his FIRST theology class today. I have your post printed out and ready to leave in the chair at the desk for him to read when he comes home from the school this evening. How timely! Thank you!

I loved this post - and what you had to say. The particular part that touched me was your mom intervening. It reminded me of my mom and how she looks out for me too.

The pics were beautiful, thank you for sharing. I have to admit, I wish I could go to a school and study that in depth.
Well, you never know what God has up His sleeve.

Blessings in Him amidst the books,

Thank you for that reminder. Diligent time with the Father makes all the difference! Too often I get busy with kids or other good things then it all falls apart because I have not spent time at His feet.

Interestingly, your photos (including the inside of the chapel) look nearly identical to the college I graduated from - Grove City College, in Grove City, PA. Also a Presby school, incidently.

Melissa, I just wanted to let you know that for the next year my desire is to start praying for you diligently over the next year, that those dark days will be of the past, and that this year ahead in your studies will be a time of renewal and God revealing himself in new ways. Love ya, friend!! :)

Melissa, I seldom leave a personal note on the blog other than for the Siesta Scripture. However, after reading your testimony today, I was compelled to write to say thank you for it and especially the poem. I am a new Christian and wished I knew so much more NOW. My church is in turmoil and I'm so confused, angry, and sad. It's all about my loving Pastor whom I dearly love!!! Because I support him with all my heart and his dedication to this church for 20+ years, I definitely feel like I'm in a dry season. I don't understand how within our church all this turmoil is going on and no lack of respect for the authority God put in this position. It was nice to hear your encouraging words and I hope to keep my focus on the one to whom scripture points, JESUS!! Please pray for my Pastor, my church (which I have not attended since his medical leave) and for my family. Again, thank you! You are so wise beyond your years and I love your family.

I come from a liturgical background and when I started taking Bible studies at a Baptist church their hymns were a "little different" too. Big difference and style between an organ and piano. Love 'em both! :)

thank you so much for the encouragement to seek the Writer of the scriptures. Thank you for being so candid about your experience and your triumph through Christ. I so needed that! I pray for you for a spirit of wisdom and revelation to know Him better and for endurance. You are a precious sister in Christ. Good luck and enjoy God this semester. Love, Christy

My prayer for you is that the Lord lavishes you with His grace and that He daily breathes His life into your study time. May it not become dry and wearisome. I grew up in a charasmatic church and now send my children to a classical presb. school. We have much to learn from each other!

Excellent post and reminder of the need to grow in our relationship with the Lord first and foremost, but studying His word is one of the tools by which we can do so.

Thank you for that post. As a fellow seminary student getting an advanced degree, I can totally relate to your dry season, for I have been there during my Master's program. I warn people who feel called to go to seminary about this time and to be on guard for it, but this season can effect us all. Such a crucial lesson for all of us...and you are right, it is a bit "chilling" to think that we can be immersed in the Word and not receive the LIFE of the Word. Thank you for the reminder today!

Blessings!

Melissa, this was for me today! I love, love, love the Word of God and can't get enough of it, yet sometimes I feel like a "reader of the Word only and not a doer" -- I want what I'm reading to ooze from my pores! Yet I seem to struggle with the same sins of the tongue as I did before I fell in love with the Word. Wish I was going to "cemetery" with you! Instead I'll plug along every morning endeavoring to know the One Whom the scripture is all about! Thanks for a timely post!

I know EXACTLY what you are talking about!! Prior to this year I had read the bible (in daily readings) 3 or 4 times. I had a few years off from that where the Lord radically transformed my heart and when I picked my trusty daily bible up this year it is just BRAND NEW to me. The love in my heart has translated into a deeper love and understanding of scripture!
Good luck in school!!!

First the library - WOWZA! (is that a word?) Beautiful on the outside and full of beautiful books on the inside.

Thank you for sharing your vulnerability about the prayer life. I work at a seminary and we have heard the cemetery word many times. I think perhaps I will get the poem enlarged and framed and sit it on my desk at home and work. It is a great reminder in my life to dream bigger and expect more out of God.

Blessings on your year at school.

What a great post from your heart and I can minutely(?) relate! I got my BS at a Christian college and spent my years there totally engaged in studying Scripture, hall devotions, mandatory chapel services each week, etc. and yet, my personal prayer life was also void except little "bless ME Lord" or "help me remember the spiritually correct answer on this test" requests every now and then. Although my faith and spiritual journey did grow in that period of time, I am sure it pales in comparison to what He would have offered had I been seeking Him more and more especially in the arena of earnest prayer and communion with Him. But, through the years and especially the past 10 years, I have grown so much, and how much fun it is to "delight in the Lord" and want to seek Him more diligently each passing day. Life is such a treasure hunt when we seek His will and we find Him in every nook and cranny of our lives. Happy studying and thanks for your posts!

Yay that you get to go to seminary!!! (Again! "Dear Lord, help me remember the 10th commandment"). You are a smart girl to go have fun working hard on this BEFORE God blesses you with little ones - because, while not impossible, it's tricky managing things like Christology and Sam I Am.

I can't wait to hear what fabulous things God has in store for you - so please don't be a stranger to Siestaville. I love your occasional Theology For The Laundry Laden posts (I obviously shouldn't speak for anyone else in Siestaville - but I can say for myself that laundry is my daily nemesis).

Thanks for the testimony, Melissa! I too went through a dry period of time as a religion major in college, when I delighted to debate and discuss theology but not the one who gives life! Praise God, He doesn't leave us in the darkness of our sin, but continues to search us out! 1 Timothy 6:18-20 was an eye-opener for me at the end of that time.

I loved the pictures as well... they totally remind me of my beloved alma mater.

And to this I say, "You're mother must be so proud."

First of all, your words brought light. Second, I look at my young daughters growing up so daggone quick that I am begging time to slow itself....and I imagine as my days are filled with bras and training bras, friends and ex friends, panty liners, cell phones, text messaging and forward boys who call my house too often, "do I look fat in this" and "why is so and so at school so bratty, Mom?," lockers and lunches, grades and zits........I imagine the day that I will have to let them leave our nest (the one whose carpets I DO like to vacuum lines in--and no Beth, I have never pointed a gun at any poor worker who came to ruin those lines with their shoes in innocent refusal to take them off--and the same house that ONLY my Lord God can hold together). I can't believe there will be a day when they will get to leave and make the choices you young adults get to make. I worry that I will be nominated "Biggest Whiner To God Cause My Kids Are Grown AND Had The Nerve To Move Out Award" and will be the woman who talks incessantly about grand babies and When they heck are my kids going to call so that I know they are fine?

But, should the day come that I open my laptop, to read a blog from my own daughter--whose fingers touched each key from her very own beautiful heart.....................................that, my friend, is the day that my knees will go numb from the weight of my body on the ground as I cry out to our God in grateful adoration for the way He has held onto her when life told me I had to "let her go on her own."

Praise God for what it must feel like to your mother to read those words dated, "Thursday September 10, 2009." If not for the rest of us to be enlightened......you could say it was all for her. And, if it isn't obvious in your eyes and heart today why I would make the aforementioned statement, Melissa, some day when your arms hold a child of your very own--you will GREATLY understand....

May our Father continue to bless, hold and teach you, and may you continue to pass it on. Always be permeable to Him............

With TOTAL love in Christ,
Becky Cain

I’m listening to your mom on Oneplace and the lesson is entitled “Wrestling with God.” She just made the statement, “has anyone lost their wonder?” I think if we dive too much into the Scripture that we miss the wonder of Him, then we’re missing Him. It reminds me of when you’re mom wrote about eating the seed and sowing the seed. I’ll never forget that as long as I live because too many times I was just eating the seed thinking that would satisfy this hungry soul. Thank you Melissa, for your incredible testimony of God’s faithfulness in pursuit of us.

Thank the good Lord above he filled that space--with himself. Now I fill up on him and fill the need to learn with tons of good bible study! Thank you for so beautifully articulating the need to learn, study, and gain knowledge as well as having that experience not just be acedemic, but drawing closer to him at the same time. Melissa,

How exciting....the interesting part of your post to me was the fact that in the last 3 weeks you are the third person to comment on caution needed when we fall in love with Bible Study as opposed to falling in love with Bible Author....I know from all of your mom's words of wisdom that God is allowing me a big "heads up" right now as I hear the same POINT over and over, so warning taken and I'm on alert to be very cautious and keep the big picture in balance....isn't it so fun to share your excitement about school and find out God used it for something so serious in another's life.....He is SO AMAZING! I am in awe at how he takes a "sister/siesta" that I've never met and knit her words into the third red flag for me lately...your words were used greatly today for "such a time as this."

ENJOY your time though, as you may have guessed, I'm envious of your experience and totally understand how exciting this must be. I would have to agree with your sister, your writing is quite excellent!

Be blessed in your pursuit of Him.

Melissa,

I live in North Alabama and I have been thinking and asking God about taking some extension classes offered in B'ham through New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary. I've never cared much about studying God's Word until this past year when He totally lit a fire in me to want to know it. I'm still not sure if this is more a crazy dream of mine or if its His dream for me, but what you stated that happened to you is one of my main hesitations in going forward in it (not to mention that all the classes could be waaaay over my blonde head). I am so prone to know more ABOUT Him, than to allow what I know about Him to lead me to know Him for myself in a deeper and more intimate way. Its so cool that you gave this scripture that speaks directly to that. Thank you for telling your testimony about this, I needed to hear this...

Love you, KT

Melissa,
Thanks for sharing from your heart - I can relate - when we're "all about God", yet not about Him at all! You touched a heart string in me. We can get so busy teaching, studying, reading, speaking and hearing about Him - yet fail to make Him the center of our lives and what we focus on. I will be thinking of you as you study and look forward to your "writings" - they do a body good!

Have a great year! I think your classes sound fantastic! A class on Romans! - is it appropriate for me to be a wee bit jealous?! I've started an in-depth Bible overview study this Fall and I am really looking forward to it. God's shown me that it's what I need right now. I'm feeling called into a season of more rigorous study myself right now and the Scripture you posted from John resonated strongly with me. I plan to copy it into the front of my study text so I can remember what exactly my purpose is in doing the class! blessings on your studies!

I have thought that studying the words in the Book was equal to relationship with the WORD! Whoa...big difference; but not exclusive! Now I won't have to fall into that dry well again.

Thank you! Thank you! You have lifted me up.

Love you all lots and lots!

I remember feeling the same way when my little Baptist self went into a Presbyterian church with my new hubby 13 years ago. Wow. There were a lot of differences, we now attend an EPC Presbyterian Church, which is a good blend for us. I LOVE the differences, as it pulls out the "same" things about all of us. We worship one God, one Christ, one Spirit, we are one body, you know the verse. I hope your days in seminary will be intriguing, challenging, and NOT spiritually dry. Hang in there, your classes sound HARD to me!

Good word Melissa! Knowledge by itself just puffs up us and makes us of no use at all. God always resists the proud and knowing the words of the WORD is not the same as knowing what it says. Jesus will say to some who think they know Him well, depart for I never knew you...... I am SURE this is not you, Jump in the deep end..the living water is fine!!! Oh how I wish I could afford formal training in Hebrew and Greek, learning on my own I am afraid there are many gaps in my knowledge. Shalom Don't you just love a beautiful chapel?

My heart is so full. How our God can do a common work among people who are hundreds or thousands of miles apart overwhelms me. God has used this post very specifically. Oh my passion for an intimacy with such an infinite God. I too love His word, but I've been tempted by the increase in knowledge and understanding which at times begins to override the relational. How I praise Him for speaking to my heart. I am more aware at this point in my life than ever before the enemies efforts to pervert the message of love and relationship. The enemy is so cunning especially among God's children; he wants to stop the Truth. Let's keep on seeking Him with all our heart.

Striving to seek Him with all my heart.

Dear Melissa,

What a privilege to hear your heart today!

I wrote your mother a note just yesterday...another note that will never get mailed because I always thinks that she probably just gets too much mail...about how her message of your strong-willed nature nearly killing her when you were growing up has given me hope in raising my own strong-willed little girl.

It challenges me to keep on praying that God will channel all of that fire and all of that passion and all of that strong-will into a fiery love for Him, a passion to study His Word that tells of His greatest and faithfulness, and the strong-will to face temptation, be His Voice and point others to Him.

This post is proof positive that He can do just that with my Lindsey!

Blessings, my friend. I needed to read this today and thank you for sharing it!

Hi Melissa,
Thank you for your testimony. I am also a survivor of seminary training. :-) And those were some difficult years for me too. There came a time after I left, that I had to make a very conscious decision to receive the Word of God on simple faith and trust that His revealed truth is TRUTH. Seminary was wonderful...but it messed up my faith in God. I wouldn't trade that experience but I thank God that He pulled me through that dark time and He was more than able to humble me.

Best of God's blessings to you while you study and I hope you are fully anointed to walk the path He has purposed for you.

Wow Melissa,
In reading your post I can apply this to the assignment your Mom gave us last night in class. To keep notes or journal any disclosures God gives us whether it be in a scripture, person, sunset, book, etc. Your post hit on a variety of areas for me. My post would be way to long to explain what they are so just trust me when I say your post had a tremendous impact that will help me on so many levels. Since Tuesday's class I have logged in 3 prior to yours now being number 4. One of the others has to do with the total number of ladies that will be meeting with me to sit together next Tuesday evening in class for your Mom's study some of whom have never met before. It is 7 and as one of the ladies pointed out to me when I told her how many...low and behold the very number for perfection - completion as was discussed in Tuesday night's lesson. I just stepped back and said, "Whoa!"
Between you and your Mom, awareness around us is being plopped right in our faces and the ride is wild and incredible. Thank you for allowing God to take you to the places he has and will to come because we in Siestaville will be drinking from that well of living water learning from and being nurtured by it.
Thank you, thank you, thank you! Keep it coming!!!

Much love and blessings as always.

I find your enthusiasm for learning absolutely adorable!
Your mannerisms remind me a lot of myself (maybe that's why I think it's adorable, lol)... except that I haven't come remotely close to committing myself to pursuing such a depth of study.
I have to say that your talking about it is making me crave it and I will probably get straight off of this computer and go do some Bible study. Seriously, I would love to go to seminary at my own pace (oh my goodness, I could never take your load!), just for the joy of learning, without feeling like I need to create a career out of it to "get my money's worth" (especially since I already don't technically use the degree I have, lol). I actually think it would be fun... cause I'm a little bit geeky like that:-)
I can already tell I'll want to read whatever book you are planning on writing :)

Love the pictures, love the poem, love the testimony. Loved the whole post. It just sort of "fit" and was kind of a positive confirmation regarding some things in my personal life. It is what I like to call a little "sunshine butt-kicking"... you know, conviction that makes you happy because it immediately compels you to action and you know you are doing right by it.

Blessings for you, girl.

That comment about the cemetary unfortunatly is incredibly true. Our President here in New Orleans told the first day of Orientation, which seems like a lifetime ago now, "You come into this seminary atmosphere ready to tackle the world for Jesus, and somewhere along the way we end up with brains the size of watermelons and the spiritual life the size of a pea." Oh how true that is.....

I've heard from so many people about the spiritual dryness that can take place in seminary when you are so entrenched in studying the word, but not intent on the Word himself. My prayer for you and for me is that we would never be so caught up in the study of theology that we miss out on anything God has for us, and I know to hear from Him I must attend to Him. I will pray that you focus on Him alone!

I have loved your moms work and have recently just been a regular to the blog. I was floored when I read this last post. I went to Columbia, there and had a very similar experience. Dr. Hayner was one of my advisors while I was there. His wife was a classmate of mine. We graduated together in 2006. What I fought with there was the fact that I was terrible at the academic realm of seminary an it tested my faith to the very core of my being. One of the only things that kept me going to finish was my call from God to the ministry. I think it is so awesome that you are there. It is a small but beautiful campus. I do not live far from the area if you need anything just let me know. Blessings on this new venture.

Melissa,

I've always enjoyed your writings and today's post was no exception! I've been going through that "dry" season you wrote about (and I am not in seminary). Despite my reading, studying, and overall self immersion in the scriptures I started to feel an unexplained and unwelcomed lack of enthusiasm (for lack of better words). I want so desperately to constantly and consistently be filled with the Spirit but instead have felt a void. Admittedly I had started to slack off in my daily prayer time figuring as long as I was spending time in the word, I was "doing my part" and everything would be fine and dandy.

Today I was just plain angry. I didn't want to pray, I didn't want to read scripture...in all honesty I just wanted to sit and do nothing. Against my own wishes I picked up my bible and started to read. Today I read John, Chapter 5. I re-read those very words you wrote on the blog as they seemed to strike a cord at the time. I had not read your post yet. I thought of your mom's gentle command at Tues night's bible study to keep a journal of how God reveals himself to us over the next ten weeks.

I prayed today for God's presence, for his wisdom and guidance and today he has given it.

An entry for my journal!

Thank you for the post and thank you for the poem! That is going on a wall somewhere!

Good luck this semester!

Valerie

Wow, Melissa, I loved what you wrote! Thank you for sharing what you did so authentically and honestly. Your post had me wishing I was sitting across the table from you engrossed in conversation. You even answered my question by telling us how you were gently led out of that critical season. Such a relatable story, at least for me. Nothing convicts me quite like realizing I am being judgmental and unkind all in the name of "love" or feeling a sense of superiority...ICK!!!!

I can't wait for you to share what you are learning this year. The pictures were great!

melissa:

thanks so much for sharing. as soon as your mom mentioned that you were headed back to school in her recent post, my heart was squeezing. i'm in a place with my husband of really desiring to go back to (grad) school but faced with so much difficulty in finding jobs where we currently are and uncertain of whether we should go for it or not?? i don't know what exactly i would like to study.. but i'm sure it would be either biblical studies or experiential education. :) kind of different topics. but i am a student at heart, always studying and surrounded by books. i love a good library. mmmm... even that you included that in your post made me laugh because i'm such a nerd about books.. i can almost hear the hush in the library and see myself scooted between the racks of books, on the floor just smelling the pages. :)

i really appreciated what you shared about your convictions as you enter back into this time. i feel similar to you in the struggles you relayed.. in undergrad days at a christian school, i was often so critical of my what my teachers were teaching in bible class i forgot to enjoy it and soak in it. now in retrospect, as God keeps working on this part of me, i look back and feel jipped. anyway.. i really connected with that and appreciated the pics and poem/scripture. it makes me remember school days and the beginning of a new semester. love it.

may God richly bless you in your studies, revealing Himself all anew, and may His Word dwell more richly IN you..

Melissa...I have to tell you that I went through the exact same kind of "dry season," and Christ (through your mom's instruction) reminded me that He knew right where I was at, and had just the thing for me. I was neck deep in scripture and theology while working on my Bachelor's in Biblical Studies. I was frustrated that something so ALIVE had become so dry and mechanical to me--I mean, c'mon! It should have been just like a CONSTANT Quiet Time, right? Yeah, not so much. So, in search of some fresh words, I headed to our church's Women's Bible Study. They were beginning "Believing God." That night, during the Intro lesson, your Mom said, "Your Promised Land is the place where your theology merges with your reality." Those words TORE through me, yet in the most gentle way. It felt like there was no one else in the room, and God was simply saying, "I know you're neck deep in theology, but you're forgetting to apply it--to live it!" Thanks for sharing your mom with me...God used her to snap me out of my "dry season" as well! And enjoy your classes! I was just craving more studies myself this afternoon...Hmmmmmm :)

That is my prayer. If I do nothing else...please, God, help me instill in Bailey, Delaney, & Kendall a love for You and a passion for Your Word!

Beth, I would LOVE for y'all to write a mother/daughter book! I think y'all have so much wisdom to bestow on the rest of us. And think how much fun y'all would have writing it together??? :) 3 versions of the same story!! LOL

Melissa, thank you so much for writing this post. I'm a junior at UNC-Chapel Hill and decided this year to begin taking Biblical Hebrew and eventually, Greek. This summer I fell in love with God's Word, His divine revelation to me, and couldn't get enough of it. I strongly considered transferring to Wheaton, and that's how I ended up finding your story and this blog. (I've been a Beth Moore fan for years, though!)

I didn't transfer, but it's really hard taking religion classes at a secular university. Right now I'm in Intro to OT/Hebrew Bible and the teacher has spent the majority of his lectures basically disproving the Biblical text.... Ironically, the same guy is teaching my Hebrew class, so it's kind of weird.

Anyway, do you have any advice for me at this point in the game? Anything you wish you could/would have done differently looking back on it now? I could see myself potentially falling into a lifestyle like you described in your post. I don't want to lose sight of the One who inspired the Book I love so dearly.

If you have any advice, encouragement, whatever for a 20 year old embarking on a journey similar to your own, I would appreciate it more than you know. You can contact me at the email address on my blog profile.

Thanks and God bless you as you continue your studies!

Melissa-how wonderful for you! I too am in the back to school mode. I started an undergrad program last year at the age of 37. I am now in my second year and I love it! I go to a small Christian college with a different affiliation then I am used to as well. I actually love it! Chapel is always refreshing to me because they sing acapella. At first I was concerned that it was a legalistic thing, but the president of the college spoke about tradition, and that the reason they worship with out instruments is because they are just holding to the tradition of the college and the founding church. I can respect that! Now I enjoy it!
God bless you as you continue to study His word. May your year be full of new discoveries as the Father continues to reveal Himself to you.

Also, I loved, loved your testimony about studying the scriptures but it just being a head thing and not a heart thing. I too, just in ministry, have to be so careful and on top of that. It's easy to just study for a lesson and really miss what the Lord is saying to my heart. So easy! I want to be teaching one thing, and also living it. So, thank you for sharing that. And how timely since a bible study I have been attending has been going through the book of John, and we JUST finished John 5. No lie!

You rock, sister! Can't wait to hear/read about what the Lord teaches you this year. I know it will be challenging to us all.

i'm excited for you! i've never really thought about how that could be true especially for seminary students to totally forget their relationship with Jesus while so vigorously studying His word! what a tactic of Satan. I'm sure that is not a new one.

you are so blessed to have your mom. i pray that i will continue to be grow in my relationship with Jesus and be well versed in His word so when my children have a question with the Lord's help i will be able to answer it correctly. recently i have found that the church (me included) is so caught up in tradition, we have read the word so much that alot of times we miss it - the real meaning i mean. we don't seem to believe the good things and we definetly don't believe the scary things. we believe tradition when alot of times tradition is not biblical. God bless you!

Melissa-I loved your blog today and could relate from a different experience. I became anorexic the year I spent the most time reading the Word. I was so full of fear and despair that reading the Bible was one more thing I had to do in my pursute of perfection. I was raised by pastors, and learned to fear God, but I was never taught how much He loved me. You would think I would have discovered that on my own by my reading, but the words were covered by the lie of God's disapproval of me. I thank God that divine intervention brought me to a meeting where I heard Rev. Jack Hayford speak about the love of our Father. I recovered and live in His love. Now my mother who is 94 lives with me, and I'm trying to teach her that she is worthy of love and joy. The Father's words aren't just words. Intimacy with Him is truly the key.

Thanks for sharing Melissa. It is a beautiful campus! Now I have a question because I'm a dork about stuff like this....what is the preferred Bible translation at Columbia? Wondering if certain schools use NASB or ESV exclusively. I know you mentioned before in a previous post that you primarily use NASB. I have been using the ESV but really want the Hebrew Greek Bible published by AMG and it's not in ESV. Do you think that the NASB and ESV are very similar- wondering if I would notice much difference? Not that you have time to answer all these questions, LOL, but it was on my mind so I thought I'd throw it out there, just in case:) Have a great weekend!

I have a poem in my Bible. Author unknown. My mother got it from her sister and I have no idea where she got it.I keep it at 1 Cor 13. as a reminder-
I dreamed God came the other night
And Heaven's gates swung wide.
With kindly grace,an angel ushered me inside,
And there to my astonishment stood folks I'd judged unfit and of little worth.
Angry words rose to my lips, but never were set free:
For every face showed stunned surprise;
No one expected me!

Melissa, God used you today for me to use the Sir Francis Drake poem to send to my son to encourage him. He's a visionary, and travels places "normal" people don't understand. Obviously, you too are a visionary, and I'm so thankful God is raising up and using you to speak with a fresh and authentic voice to the generations to come. Nothing like the voice of a mother to set the course right. I'm so grateful for the wisdom and discernment your mother always examples. It gave me courage to say something similar and needful to my son today. We just never know how far the ripples from our pond can affect. You are in my thoughts and prayers as you recieve all God has to give you in your pursuit of spirit and truth. I find the intersection of spirit and truth precisely at the Cross. Loved the pic's too! We just got back from trip to the Baltics and loved seeing all the Cathedrals and churches, and your pic's reminded me of those styles from so long ago, that still impact our hearts today and causes some reverance and awe.
Love and appreciate you, sweet siesta for taking the time to share from your heart.

But in all honesty I thank you for opening up and laying that out. I feel like I have been living that for quiet a while though I do feel like I am climbing out of this pit. When you are in too many Bible Studies sometimes you are so overwhelmed with the homework that it is all you feel like you have time for. You do your Bible reading then get started on your homework, do some housework and everyday living in between and before you know it you are up the next day doing it again and you haven't been still before your Lord and spent time just Him and you without a study directing you were you two should be walking. It is comforting to know that others who are perceived as having it all together is right there in this pit with us. Thanks so much!

Amen Melissa!
I am attending Northeastern Seminary and I too have found writing papers every week to be dry and tedious.
But, at NES, they integrate spiritual formation classes into the program, so it does not become strictly an intellectual exercise.
Also, we have chapel a couple times a semester, and each time, they bring someone in from a different denomination who conducts the service according to their tradition. So we get a flavor of many differnent churches. And the students are from all different denominations, so it lends to very interesting conversation.
While our studies are more theology/church history focused, I would LOVE the program you are in. While the larger picture theology has been good for me, at heart I love digging through exegetical study.
Thanks for sharing, and keep us posted with cool nuggets of what God is teaching you!

It's indeed a dark place. The poem that you posted, though, hit straight to my heart. Sometimes I forget that this isn't my home. I get so wrapped up in trying to make everything balanced and perfect that I make myself miserable. I forget to be thankful for the "disturbances" that help me grow in Christ. I seek happiness more than I seek after my Creator. I'll be printing out the poem you shared and posting it somewhere I can see it every day. Thank you!

Melissa,
I thought about your post all night, remembering dry seasons in my own life. I was mired in mediocrity for many years, bored with reading the Bible and fill in the blank Bible studies; wanting to go deeper, but not knowing how. Then came Precept studies and suddenly the gates of Scripture opened. I prayed to know Him more and more. But slowly a bit of pride crept in because of the knowledge that I was gaining. Then someone lent me a Beth Moore tape from the Precept conference in 2002. I listened to it again and again. And I knew what was missing, so I prayed to love Him. Since that time I have added two more requests, that I could obey Him and serve Him. He is faithful.

Now, lest it sound like I think that I have arrived...no way. But I do know that I am on the right path of seeking after Him, every day. And how blessed you are to have learned this lesson so much earlier in life.

Melissa, can I just say how poignant this post is today? I got goosebumbs looking at the pictures and reading about the library. You would never get me out of there!

I completely, 100% relate with your honest to goodness confession. What you described is exactly why I left Bible college more than 10 years ago.

Unfortunately I did not have someone like your mom recognize what was going on.

While studying Esther this spring, as your mom described your dad picking up his bird dog and getting her off point I literally felt God pick me up and reverse my destiny. While sitting in that church pew, watching your mom on the screen, the same calling I felt when I was 16 came back with a vengence. God had not forgotten. God still wanted to use me. God still has a perfect plan and God was calling my name to serve him through serving women. Exactly the same call I responded to on a Sunday night in a little Baptist church in upstate New York.

Bible "college" has been traded for what Kay Arthur calls UGA, Under God's Authority at my dining room table and in my office area of our master bedroom.

I am now writing my first Bible Study. And for the last week or so I have been staring at a blank screen. Just this morning i prayed that God would reveal to me why this wall is between His Spirit and me. Through you He has answered me - return to the Scriptures for Life. Streams of Living Water. Get prostrate before the Lover of my soul and fall in love for the first time again...

Thank you Melissa from the bottom of my heart. I pray that God meets you at Columbia in a way that leaves you breathless.

A great post!! Stings a little, but reminded me not to place more emphasis on studying than I do on my relationship with the Author.

Melissa, I so appreciate what you said about diligently studying the scriptures but not being connected to Jesus. I have been there and it is a dry and dreary place for sure. What a beautiful chapel and stately library! Imagine 192,000 books to choose from! Enjoy your studies.

Thank you for this post. It speaks to me! The campus where you will be studying is beautiful. May you be blessed in your pursuit of a deeper understanding of the scriptures.

I already said a prayer for you as you head into this new and awesome journey! So cool.

Even though I wasn't in school and digging as deep into scripture as I'm sure you were during that season - My time of greatest doubt and questioning came while I was in The Word more than ever - doing numerous Bible studies at once. It was shocking. I thought that all of my studying would lead to a richer, sturdier faith - but instead it left me kinda dry. Weird how that can happen. I guess no matter how much I'm studying - I have to remember that Jesus is IT.

(For example - I have been studying a lot in the Old Testament lately - maybe a little tooooo much. Because, the other day my husband and I were talking about some things that made us sad and I told him that I felt like "dressing in burlap and covering myself in ashes." LOL! He said, "have you read anything in the NEW Testement lately, Babe? Maybe you should." Ha!

May you flourish in your faith as you go about this Master's program!

Blessings,
Kate :)

really appreciate this post. It came at a time that I needed it. I am taking a bible study modeled after seminary - 4 year bible study. And, all these things I am learning have to remember that God's Word is about how much he loved humankind and wanted a relationship with us. Need to keep this foremost, as I learn how the bible was put together, interpreted, etc.
Thanks

Liiiissss, Whaa! I wish I could go to school with you.

In the voice of Napoleon Dynamite, LUCKY.

In all seriousness, I couldn't be more excited and, crazy proud of you. You rock girl, you rock.

Any scholarly crumbs you want to throw this way will be hoarded and eaten immediately. You can burn my phone up any time you get too full. I've told you this before but I'd be glad to sit at your feet any day, dearest little sister.

I love you.

I have never read that poem before, and I love it. Awesome. Thank you for that testimony.

Also, your seminary sounds (and looks) awesome.

As a WOMAN, I think we all go through a season of CONTROL. That has been my nemesis. If we could just rest in God's Word and not
try to control"now what did she mean by that" we would be so much closer to God. We all need constant reminders of that. Thank you Melissa.

Amen and amen! We can know the scriptures inside out and miss out on the ONE. Oh, how we need changing. And each season of our lives seems to require a bit different tweaking.

God's Word ... the only book that keeps on giving. I love that it can never be mastered completely ... because the Master won't be mastered!

Love you, Melissa; thank you for sharing your life with us!

I was a Bible college student and it was for certain a bit Spiritually dry...though I met some of the most amazing people I know and respect to date there.

I am going to be intentional about praying for you during this time!

When I left Bible college and had to deal with real life, it was HARD! Your mom's books/Bible studies are what helped me fall in love with the Word of God again...and now I dare someone to try and stop me...ok I should be more careful about what I say...Satan is real and he will try...

God bless you and your time...the pics are FABULOUS!

I can't type fast enough to get all of what is on my mind and heart to come out but when I read your title of your post, I almost fell in the floor. I have been preparing to facilitate your mom's study on Believing God (excellent!!) and only this morning, I was reading the lesson on Isaiah 6.

I got to the part where the cherubim are crying, "Holy, holy, holy.." and the sound of their voices shook the posts in the temple. One of the definitions of the word was disturb and all I could reflect on then was, "O God, let the sight of Your holiness so disturb me, so cause my heart to rumble inside of me, so make my feet shake inside my shoes, that the only place I can find myself is at Your feet, facedown in total surrender to the "awesomeness of You!"

I am grateful for that kind of disturbance, that shakes me up, reminds me of my true place at the feet of my Lord and His totally unfailing love and grace to provide my way to Himself.

Melissa, I will be praying for you as you study that it will be much more than words on a page to you, but that it will be fire in your bones! Praise You God for women who want to study Your word to realize the life that You have provided for them! You go Girl!

Melissa, I can totally relate with you on loving the idea of all of the studying and research, and BOOKS! I have a master's in counseling and we had heavy theolgy classes...and boy was it a stretch. Enjoy your time of being immersed in the word of God!

My good friend and mentor said a similar thing to me not too long ago:
"If we study the Word to gain more knowlege, then we profoundly miss the point. Studying the Word is supposed to change us."
I pray you'll be changed this year in your study of the scriptures.

A couple unconnected comments:
-Thank you for sharing. I can feel your excitement.
-And thanks for the beautiful pictures. I can just imagine the beautiful school in my mind's eye. I love the way that school "feels" when I walk on a campus.
-I had never heard that poem/reading before, but it is a good reminder for a book-girl like me.
-And, can I say this with much tenderness from a wife who did it wrong, don't neglect your husband.

Thank you for sharing this reminder with us, Melissa. I am giving a talk next week on storing up vs. hoarding, and I had material and spiritual examples of storing up and dealing with famines but only material examples of hoarding--I wasn't sure it was possible to hoard spiritually, but I suspected there was a way we humans could manage to do so. I'm so glad you found your way back to intimacy with God so that he can use all that Scripture you were learning back in the dry time! Thank you!
