Grab Life by the Mane
Greetings blog-world.
I'm not sure about you, but I'm having a hard time paying attention today. With the long weekend ahead, I am getting a bit jittery. Not to mention, Atlanta has been, for the most part, absolutely fabulous this week. Low 70's. Warm sunshine. A nice cool breeze. Hardly a cloud in the brilliant blue sky. The smell of fresh jasmine permeating the air. With this distractingly beautiful weather and Memorial Day weekend ahead, I've been needing a little extra motivation to keep me sitting still in my office throughout the work day.
I came across this quote, printed it out, and it has been really inspiring to me this week. So naturally, I thought I would pass it along in case you were a little bit distracted today like I am. The quote is apparently by Mark Batterson, who I am not personally familiar with so you will have to correct me if I am in the wrong.
"Quit living as if the purpose of life is to arrive safely at death. Grab life by the mane. Set God-sized goals. Pursue God-ordained passions. Go after a dream that is destined to fail without divine intervention. Keep asking questions. Keep making mistakes. Keep seeking God. Stop pointing out problems and become part of the solution. Stop repeating the past and start creating the future. Stop playing it safe and start taking risks. Expand your horizons. Accumulate experiences. Consider the lilies. Enjoy the journey. Find every excuse you can to celebrate everything you can. Live like today is the first day and last day of your life. Don't let what's wrong with you keep you from worshipping what's right with God. Burn sinful bridges. Blaze a new trail. Criticize by creating. Worry less about what people think and more about what God thinks. Don't try to be who you're not. Be yourself. Laugh at yourself. Quit holding out. Quit holding back. Quit running away. Chase the lion."
- Mark Batterson
Have you recently come across a quote that you loved? It doesn't have to be your favorite quote ever. I don't think I could even narrow down what my all-time favorite quote is. I have a working list of quotes that I add to regularly and I like them all for different reasons and seasons.
Here is one of my Mom's:
"Faith is not clinging to a shrine, but an endless pilgrimage of the heart, audacious longing, burning songs, daring thoughts, an impulse overwhelming the heart, usurping the mind- these are all a drive toward serving Him who rings our hearts like a bell."
- Abraham Joshua Heschel
And finally, here is Amanda's:
"What's that smell? Is that a snuck?"
-Jackson Jones
We hope you have a fantastic Holiday weekend. Take life in. You are loved.

Oh, I so needed ALL of those quotes! Thank you for encouraging and inspiring!
You can't be promoted if you can't be replaced. (This is true for everything in life. Sometimes WE have to step up!)
Everyone blesses this office; some by entering and others by exiting!
Here's a quote that struck me recently, oddly enough, while reading a Christian fiction novel:
“Listen to your life. See it for the fathomless mystery that it is. In the boredom and pain of it no less than in the excitement and gladness: touch, taste, smell your way to the holy and hidden heart of it because in the last analysis all moments are key moments, and life itself is grace.”--Frederick Buechner
Ha! Cute! My daughter used to call it a "stunk". We have found this to be a more appropriate name, and therefore continue to call it that.
Oh, and the other two quotes were good too...
Don't have time to post my quote - yet, I'm on my way to Laramie!!! I've been praying like crazy for this weekend. I am so excited.
Like all of us, I have many favorite quotes. This is my favorite for today. If I could just learn to live by it...I try to make prayer too difficult.
Johnny, prayer is just a simple matter
> of having a conversation with Jesus.
> Here is what I suggest.
> 'Sit down in a chair;
> place an empty chair in front of you,
> and in faith see Jesus on the chair.
'Then just speak to him in the same way
> you're doing with me right now.'
> 'So, I tried it and I've liked it so much
> that I do it a couple of hours every day.

I love the quote you quoted :)
Like you, I have a journal that I have used to collect quotes that have meant a lot to me. Here are two of my favorites:
Beth Moore:
"We are shocked by pain again and again; yet it characterizes our existence. None of us can avoid it. We can anesthetize pain, but we will neither fully experience this life nor celebrate the next without it."
C. S. Lewis:
"God whispers to us in our joys, speaks to us in our conscience, and shouts to us in our pain."
Hope everyone has a special weekend.

Hi Melissa-
I love quotes.
Here is one of my favoirtes.

Thanks for sharing, Melissa! I, too, have been distracted today. Can't think of a quote off the top of my head -- if you hadn't put us on the spot... :) Enjoy your weekend!

I love quotes, too, and use a different one on my blog each week. The one I've used this past week is:
"Love comforteth like sunshine after rain." William Shakespeare
Hope everyone has a love-filled sunshiny weekend!
I believe God wants me to step out in faith in a ministry area. Your quotes were a confirmation and an encouragement this morning. Fears and hurts and running away are all things I can identify with because of my past mistakes. God has been building me up for many years now and I am looking to him in prayer for my next step. Thanks to the LPM team, their total ministry and all who serve the Lord.
Love and God's blessings,
Mildred
Thanks for sharing the quotes. I have a notebook that I love to fill with wonderful, thought-provoking, inspiring, funny quotes from others. Here's one of my favs:
"Every experience God gives us, every person He puts in our lives, is the perfect preparation for the future that only He can see."

Grab life by the mane. Love it. I so needed that today. Thanks for sharing. I feel like all my dreams are God-sized dreams. Really too big to grasp.
Love the Mark Batterson quote.
One that I especially like is from St. Francis of Assisi:
"Preach the gospel at all times...and when necessary, use words."
Melissa,
I am SOOOOoooo excited about this post and seeing what responses will come from the wonderful ladies who read this blog! I love quotes and have so many running in my head that I'll have to pick one and come back to reply. BAM-each one of you chose great ones. I truly need the motivation from the one M selected. Whoo-hoo!

Mt quote is a conversation between my Mom and my 5-year-old sister. It reminded me of how I often try to convince God to let me do whatever I want to do.
Sis: I'm not tired!
Mom: Well, it's time to go to bed.
Sis: But Mom, my sister said I can do whatever I want to do (disclaimer: I never would say such a thing)
Mom: The only way I'm going to let you do what you want to do is if it's the same thing I want you to do. And that is go to bed.
Sis: Okay, that's what I wanted to do anyway.

Oh gosh.... Recently, I got to take a trip to Eureka Springs, AR with my 4 year old daughter. We were able to go to the Passion Play. One of the opening scenes is Jesus surrounded by the children. My 4 year old piped up, "Jesus, I'm over here. Come here Jesus." Then for the triumphal entry scene she says, "Oh, I forgot. HOSANNAH!" At the resurrection, she yelled, "GO, Jesus. GO!"
But the part that got to my heart was when she looked at me with those big 4 year old eyes and said, "Mommy, can I give Jesus a hug? I just really want to hug him." And all I could think was "me too baby. Me too."

Melissa, I love your quote. Here's my lifelong favorite:
" We cannot be happy if we expect to live all the time at the highest peak of intensity. Happiness is not a matter of intensity but of balance and order and rhythm and harmony. Music is pleasing not only because of the silence that is in it: without the alternation of sound and silence there would be no rhythm. If we stive to be happy by filling all the silences of life with sound, productive by turning all life's leisure into work, and real by turning all our being into doing, we will only succeed in producing a hell on earth.
If we have no silence, God is not heard in our music. If we have no rest, God does not bless our work. If we twist our lives out of shape in order to fill every corner of them with action and experience, God will silently withdraw from our hearts and leave us empty."

Love that, Melissa. Thanks for sharing it. Think I'll go print it on an index card so I can ponder it.
Getting ready to head to Laramie this afternoon to hang with your sweet mama!
Much love,

Melissa, Thanks for that mega-dose of inspiration! Yes, I needed it too. My mind is already on the weekend. Love, love, love good quotes and those (especially the one from Mark Batterson)are just...WOW! Can't wait to share that with my college-age son. He and his classmates have a number of God-sized dreams...the biggest being a passionate desire to see their Christian film endeavor take off and make a huge impact for the Kingdom of God. (May we ALL Chase the Lion!)
Have a great weekend!

It has been nice in the ATL this week-so enjoying the cooler weather! Here's a quote I love:
"I don't know what the future holds, but I know Who holds the future." Unknown
My quotes on this day:
"Any place where our minds are not steadfast is a place we don't trust God. . .It is not enough to trust God that that which we most fear will not happen. . .When bad stuff happens, God must have a lot of glory (a lot of ministry) at stake. . .The very area where you are most tempted to distrust God is the very place He has chosen to most trust you. . .God says, 'I am your all-surpassing power in a jar of clay. Watch Me show off.' "

"Girls, it's time to call the moving truck. It's time to take down your pictures because you have a new place to live, and it's not in the next pit. It's in the spacious place, where the grass is green and there's fresh air."

"I've suffered a great many tragedies in my life, most of them never happened."
"Deliverance from an unwise decision is worthy of as much celebration and praise as the arrival of long awaited desires."
I wrote that in an email yesterday, and I tell you, I think it was the Holy Spirit Himself saying it..... two years ago, I would not have said that.
Ok, I love, love, love the quote by Amy Carmichael and quote it often to my girls. It is:
"In acceptance lieth peace."
Plain, but it packs a wollop.
I am mentoring a girl whose mother left her when she was three and one of the things she found in her wallet (yes, the mother left her purse behind) was this quote. The girl shared it with me this week:
"Resolve to be tender with the young, compaasionate with the aged, sympathetic with the striving, and tolerant of the weak and the wrong. Sometime in life you will have been all of these." I don't know who wrote it, but I would love to rewrite it a little.

luv2lace1983, love that C.S. Lewis one!!!
Funny, I just posted this quote on my blog the other day! Thanks for sharing yours!
"God may send you some valuable gifts wrapped in unattractive paper. But do not worry about the wrappings, for you can be sure that inside He has hidden treasures of love, kindness, and wisdom. If we will simply take what He sends and trust Him for the blessings inside, we will learn the meaning of the secrets of His providence, even in times of darkness."
L. B. Cowman, Streams in the Desert
My most recent favorite has urged me toward greater intercession: "Praying down gifts on oneself is a wonder of grace; but praying down blessings on others is indeed an inconceivable honor." --Andrew Murray
Just finished Mark Batterson's newest book: "Wild Goose Chase." Worth the read! As is "In a Pit With a Lion on a Snowy Day."
Short version: Husband, me, 3 young sons (7,5,2 ) driving in our van. We were playing a game called counting cows. My husband and oldest son sitting behind him were counting cows on their side of the road, myself and middle son were counting cows on our side of the road (youngest asleep or so we thought). When you pass a cementary all your cows die and you after start over at 1. My middle son and I were winning and just before we arrived at our destination, we passed a cemetary on our side and lost all our cows. The baby piped up out of nowhere and said "Stupen Cows"
Thanks for the quote. I'm keeping that one and sharing it too. I do love a good quote. Here's one of my favorites about friendship:
Friendship is born at that moment when one person says to another, 'What! You too? I thought I was the only one!'
- C.S. Lewis
This has been an important quote for me to remember, in this worldly world of ours:
"I have held many things in my hands and I have lost them all. But whatever I have placed in God's hands, that I still possess."
- Martin Luther
I have always like this one. It's one from your mom...Not sure where it's from. I just came across it one day:
"A daily recommitment is not to ensure that we’ll never fail, but to help us develop the mentality that every day is a new day. A new chance to follow Christ. Obedience to God is not some diet we suddenly blow. It is something to which we recommit every single day, no matter how we blew it the day before. Victorious living is not an instant arrival. It is the pursuit of one victorious day at a time until the sun sets on enough to begin forming victorious habits." - Beth Moore
Mother Teresa -- "If you can't feed a hundred people, feed just one."
My goodness! 900+ children sponsored! That is so exciting! I'm a volunteer Child Advocate for Compassion -- and since I began speaking in small Wyoming & Montana churches in '94 I have just passed 500 kids! You nearly doubled that in just one week -- how awesome is that??!!?? We can all do our part, one child at a time, for as you know -- they each have a face, a name and specific crucial needs. Thank you so much for the wonderful posts!
Yes, thats Mark Batterson. He is a preacher in Washington, DC and his blog is http://www.evotional.com. He's a great writer!
I absolutely love quotes! I’ll play and replay some sermons just to jot down the main point in my journal. Here’s a favorite of mine.

I love you guys! Melissa, you are so special to me because you so very much remind me of my strong-willed daughter who could make me cry with frustration :-)
Yet, now at age 25 she is a Family Counselor/Social Worker that goes into the worst gang filled neighborhoods near Oakland, CA and helps children and teens with problems many of us cannot bear to hear about, much less see and hear firsthand.

No way I could narrow it down to just one favorite, but here are two that I love:

Oh, and this one that I have to remind myself of very often:
There is no problem, situation, or circumstance bigger than God.
Beth Moore :-)
Thank you for sharing those quotes. I love all of there.
This is one that has been speaking to my heart lately:
"When I learn to say yes to God's will I am no longer preoccupied with myself, my abilities or the dreams for my life. Letting go of my dreams means my future will not be the way I always expected it to be. Only then, when I have released my death grip on what I believe God should do, the way I believe He should do it, and when I believe it should happen, am I free to fully receive what God has for me. If God calls me to put my dreams on the alter, I need to trust Him to replace them or revive them in a way that makes the original pale by comparison."

Those are the two on the refrigerator right now, at any rate.
Melissa, I know exactly what you mean about the feeling jittery today! Thank you for sharing this quote...for starters, I'm going to ride a roller coaster tonight! I'm such a chicken. And then set me God-sized goals; ones that will fail without "divine intervention." Love you too Moore-Jones-Fitzpatrick women.

I love that quote from Mark Batterson's book "In a Pit With A Lion on A Snowy Day." That was actually one of the books that I was reading when I was contemplating leaving the work force to go into ministry full time.

Melissa: I LOVE quotes...
I am posting from my Blackberry..hope this comes through!
"Be careful not to confuse excellence with perfection. Excellence you can reach for. Perfection is God's business."
That was a great quote. My husband LOVES quotes. I'll have to send this his way...thanks! Have a blessed weekend.
"I always thank God and marvel at His love and goodness to me in spite of myself."

"Never argue with a Pharisee." Beth Moore I tell my husband that all the time.
One that has really made an impact on me, quoted by Pastor Greg Laurie:
If the infinite God were small enough for our finite minds to fully understand, He wouldn't be big enough for our needs.
Totally needed that today! In a few short weeks, my hubby and I are going on the trip of a lifetime to celebrate our
40th birthdays. In our almost 13 years of parenthood, we have never been away from the kids for more than a night. Being away from them for a whole week is starting to cause much anxiety and is even taking away from the excitement of the trip for me. I hate that I'm doing this to myself, especially when God's hand has been SO evident in the trip planning and all. He's just waiting to bless us and I need to embrace it! This quote you shared is perfect timing and has helped to ease my worries. Thanks for sharing!
"Perhaps the most profound miracle of all is living through something we thought would kill us. And not just living, but living abundantly and effectively--raised from living death to a new life. A life indeed absent of something or someone dear but filled with the presence of the Resurrection and the Life."
Breaking Free - Beth Moore
This one is one (among many) lifetime favorites:
"God is most glorified in me when I am most satisfied in Him." - John Piper

I too, along with others, needed these quotes today. I hope you have a fabulous long weekend, Melissa.
Just wanted to share my favorite quote with you, and you might already have heard it:
Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are more powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness, that most frightens us. We ask ourselves, Who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented, fabulous? Actually, who are you not to be? You are a child of God. Your playing small doesn't serve the world. There's nothing enightened about shrinking so that other people won't feel insecure around you. You were born to make manirfest the glory of God that is within you. It's not just in some of us, it's in everyone. And as we let our own light shine, we unconsciously give other people the premission to do the same. As we're liberated from our own fear, our presence automatically liberates others. (Nelson Mandela)
"Don't live for the moment. God created us for eternity. So live for eternity and enjoy the moment."
My son has this on his facebook and I like it also. I just don't know who quoted it.

Thank you for the lift today! What a blessing the LPM blog has been to me...and please accept my apologies if I have "overstepped my bounds" in blogworld. I'm on a learning curve, and didn't understand there is a "blog etiquette" to be observed, but the Holy Spirit is such a sweet teacher, sometimes I have to be hit over the head to learn. He is telling us "I knew you could do this. I know what is in you, because I AM in you. And I am your all surpassing power in a jar of clay, watch me show off from the inside out."
Quotes from Beth Moore, Life Today
I am going through some horrible, horrible circumstances. But God is teaching me that I can have Joy and an Asher blessing in those circumstances. The segement from Life Today that Beth taught on is written in a special notebook that I keep and read through many times a week, to remind me that My God is good and he is more than I could ever deserve. Thanks for the blog!

Never let a problem to be solved become more important than the person to be loved.

I guess this qualifies as aquote but there is a little story along with it:
a storm was heading into Brentwood where we live and my two year-old was very concerned. My four year-old asked him "do you want beautiful flowers to grow" he answered "yeah" and her response was (this is the favorite quote part) "then let the storm come!" Holy cow that came from my 4 year-old daughter...WOW God works through tiny ones too.

“We can’t get to the milestone if we can’t get through the moment.” –Beth Moore
“Don’t become bitter, become better.”–Sheila Bailey
I love that Amanda's quote is Jackson! One of my favorite quotes is my son too! He had fallen in the potty and when I asked him about it. He said, "Yes, I fell in but I didn't go down the drain! This hand was sticking out and this knee was touching my nose." How he got out by his 2-yr-old self I will never know!
I have had days like that when I feel like I am about to go down the drain, but God is so faithful to grab me by the hand that is sticking out!
This is still on my bulletin board at work. My youngest married his best friend on Sept 27, 2009!

So many quotes...so little time!
Love being reminded of some of these and looking forward to adding so many to my journal.
Here are the quotes (without authors) that my grandmother put in my purse when I left for college in 1978...
Have you every noticed that...
*The harder you work, the luckier you get!
*You must give up the way it is...to have it the way you want it.
*There is no growth without discontent before it starts.
*You get treated in life the way you TRAIN people to treat you.
*if you don't make a choice, someone will choose for you.
*It's not enough to aim, you must hit.
*The best way to escape from a problem is to solve it.
*It's easier to say what we believe than to be what we believe.
*You can love someone and still not like the way they act.
*Life is what's coming, not what was.
*Your success is measured by your ablility to complete things.
And tow that recently got my attention, from an essay by Lisa Belkin written to her son on his 18th birthday...
"...paying a baby-sitter every couple of Saturday nights is cheaper than paying a marriage counselor."
"... a teenager is like something out of a horror movie — their real self is somewhere within that new and scary shell, and the trick is to keep talking to the person you know is in there. They will hear you. It just might take a few years before they acknowledge that they’ve heard."
I'm crazy about you Moore-Jones-Fitzpatrick women...

Melissa, Thanks for the encouraging word. I always enjoy reading your posts, and this one was no exception, but I couldn't think of a quote off the top of my head, so I wasn't going to comment. When I checked my email and read my "Moments Together For Couples" devotional for the day, I came across the best quote, which is probably why I couldn't think of one before. So here it is: "Faith is believing God's Word is more true than anything you think, see, or feel." Ney Bailey (from her book, "Faith Is Not A Feeling")
Thanks agian, I needed both today -your post and Ney Bailey's quote.
Blessings to all of you,
Patti Hayes
What lovely quotes! I want to make copies of the Batterson quote and keep it in front of my face at all times...not to mention distribute to everyone I know! Have a wonderful, relaxing Memorial weekend everybody!!
Melissa,
I'm convinced I have AADD, although, I've never been diagnosed. Please go to the Moon Pie blog and read my post girl, it's for you! I, like you, have too many favs, but my favorite of all time is a prayer.
Okay:
The Serenity Prayer (in it's entirety).
God grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change;
courage to change the things I can;
and the wisdome to know the difference.
Living one day at a time;
Enjoying one moment at a time;
Accepting hardships as the pathway to peace;
Taking, as He did, this sinful world
as it is, not as I would have it;
Trusting that He will make all things right
if I surrender to His Will;
That I may be reasonably happy in this life
and supremely happy with Him
Forever in the next.
Amen.

2nd fav:
"The Cross Made The Difference For Me"- I don't know who wrote it, saw it on a sign in the SBC store and when I went back, IT WAS GONE! That's okay, I'll find it.
My others are from C.S. Lewis, Ruth Bell Graham, Beth Moore and fellow sista's on the blog.
There is nothing -- no circumstance, no trouble, no testing -- that can ever touch me until, first of all
it has gone past God and past Christ, right through to me. If it has come that far, it has come with
a great purpose, which I may not understand at the moment. But as I refuse to become panicky,
as I lift up my eyes to him and accept it as coming from the throne of God for some great purpose
of blessing to my own heart, no sorrow will ever disturb me, no trial will ever disarm me, no
circumstance will cause me to fret -- for I shall rest in the Lord of what my joy is -- That is the
rest of victory.
~A dear friend sent this to me and I do not know who wrote it but I love it!
Hi Melissa,
My quote is " To enjoy the right here and the right now" embrace the moment you are in, stop wishing to be some where else etc... dwell on where you are and embrace it with the wisdom of GOD.
Enjoy your weekend. :)

I always heard this was by Nelson Mandela, by just found out that's incorrect. It's actually a quote by Marianne Williamson. One of my favorites.
“Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness that most frightens us. We ask ourselves, Who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented, fabulous? Actually, who are you not to be? You are a child of God. Your playing small does not serve the world. There is nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other people won't feel insecure around you. We are all meant to shine, as children do. We were born to make manifest the glory of God that is within us. It's not just in some of us; it's in everyone. And as we let our own light shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same. As we are liberated from our own fear, our presence automatically liberates others.”

Melissa, I am reading Mark Batterson's book about chasing lions right now, and it is LIFE CHANGING. I'm sure you have a stack of books to read, but I recommend adding this one to it today!
One of my favorite quotes is where I got my blog title:

and really amazing,
is giving up on being perfect
and beginning the work
of becoming yourself.
~ Anna Quindlen
"I know that GOd is speaking when His voice is so powerful that it comforts, heals, instructs, corrects and gives wisdom in only a few words. Mine is actually from Beth, out of Believing God. I wrote it out and it sits on my desk to remind me that I cannot do one thing on my own, and that if I truly want to be successful and see something out of "my" efforts, I must completely fall on Christ.
The Lord Jesus Christ offers us the one and only way to wholeness: giving ourselves wholly to Him, inviting His healing, and trusting Him to apportion our energies, gifts, and talents in their most effective ways. Every fish. Every loaf. Withholding nothing. We give Christ our all, and with it He does the impossible. - Beth Moore
my new favorite is one I heard from a preacher on Mother's day. He prayed this before his sermon
"Lord may anything I say be forgotten as quickly as possible. But may anything YOU say through my be remembered for a lifetime"
such humility of purpose. He got his wish. I don't even know his name, but I recall the sermon.
oh and I love the one by your mom about driving around the parking lot seven times to get to some promised land.

"It is generally safe to say that noise and turmoil in the interior life are signs of inspirations that proceed from our own emotion or from some spirit that is anything but holy. The inspirations of the Holy Ghost are quiet, for God speaks in the silent depths of the Spirit. His voice brings peace. [He] shows us the emptiness and confusion of projects we thought we had undertaken for his glory . . . He delivers us from ambition. The Holy Spirit is most easily recognized where He inspires obedience and humility."

Melissa,
You are a gifted writer. Thank you for sharing your heart (and quotes!) with us.
God used Mark Batterson's books In A Pit With A Lion On A Snowy Day and Wild Goose Chase to rock my world...when I wasn't planning on it! Great reads.

Two quotes that have changed my life:
1) Beth Moore:
"Measure the size of your God against the size of your obstacles."
2) John Eldredge's paraphrase of Jesus' mission (where Jesus reads Isaiah in Luke 4:17-21)in his book "Waking the Dead":
"God has sent me on a mission.
I have some great news for you.
God has sent Me to restore and release something.
And that something is YOU.
I am here to give you back your heart and set you free."
Thank you for that! This is one that I just read today in "Morning by Morning" by C.H. Spurgeon (maybe you've heard of him! ;) )
These trials are for the testing and strengthening of your faith- they are waves that wash you farther upon the rock- they are winds which waft your ship more swiftly toward the desired haven.
Burn sinful bridges.
I love that. Whoever the dude is it is a POWERFUL statement. I needed that slap in the face.
I also love quotes. A couple of my favorites are:
"Instead of telling God how big your problems are, start telling your problems how big your God is."
(Sorry I don't know who said it)
Just for fun, I also like this one from Barbara Johnson."If at first you don't suceed, see if the loser gets anything."
Thanks, Melissa, this was fun!
Praying everyone has a safe and happy Memorial weekend!
my favorite quote is by my then 3 year old son in the middle of disney world's night parade..."Mommy, you are as pretty as cinderella."

Hmm, definitely a quote person and loved reading these . . . some of them really hit me.
Two quotes I have loved for years:
"When we work, we work; when we pray, God works."
"Only one life,
'twill soon be passed;
Only what's done
for Christ will last."
One more, because I'm seeing this one as I write this comment. As a focused person, I need this reminder at work each day as people come to my office with questions:
"People are not interuptions to my work - people are my work."
"You can't get to the next level until you let go of the one you're on." - Passed on to me by my sweet friend, Pat Layton.
LOVED yours! Thanks for sharing!
Happy, wonderful, sweet-smelling SPRING to you!

I guess this is really more of a poem than a quote, but it is so good!
Thou art the Lord who slept upon the pillow,
Thou art the Lord who soothed the furious sea,
What matter beating wind and tossing billow
If only we are in the boat with Thee?
Hold us in quiet through the age-long minute,
While Thou art silent and the wind is shrill:
Can the boat sink while Thou, dear Lord, art in it?
Can the heart faint that waiteth on Thy will?

Thanks for sharing everyone!

Thank you thank you Moore-Jones-Fitzpatrick women!
I desperately needed those quotes today!
"Now that I am a Christian I do have moods in which the whole thing looks improbable: but when I was an atheist I had moods in which Christianity looked terribly probable."-C.S. Lewis.
"I gave in and admitted God was God."-C.S. Lewis
"Never doubt in the dark what God told you in the light."
V. Raymond Edman
Ooooo, I love this topic!
I have MANY, but my favorite is by Martin Luther King, Jr. He spoke these words at the funeral of the four little girls who were killed in the bombing of the 16th Street Baptist Church in Brimingham, Alabama in 1963:
"At times, life is hard, as hard as crucible steel. It has its bleak and difficult moments. Like the ever-flowing waters of the river, life has its moments of drought and its moments of flood. Like the ever-changing cycle of the seasons, life has the soothing warmth of its summers and the piercing chill of its winters. But if you will hold on, you will discover that God walks with you, and that God is able to lift you from the fatigue of despair to the buoyancy of hope and transform dark and desolate valleys into sunlit paths of inner peace."
My favorite quotes come from some my mom made to my 2 brothers and sister when we were young.
Don't sweat the small stuff and everything except knowing and following God is small stuff.
When life gives you lemons, make lemonade. This has always helped me, however simple this statement is, has helped me over the years to realize I only see 1 tiny glimpse of God's plan. What may seem negative, may in the long run be something very positive. It's like your mom said in Living Beyond Yourself: We need to quit thinking because something is hard it is bad! Oh, I needed to hear that again today myself.
Have a great holiday weekend. I have both my teenage sons home for the weekend ( am blessed to say this is a blessing!)

Hi Melissa...
Thanks for the great post and incredible quote. It really spoke to my heart and felt like a gift from the Lord.
I've been thinking about this quote all week since I saw it on Twitter from Max Lucado: "Service is the rent you pay for your space on this planet" (Beyond Hunger- p. 176)
It has made me think about how I'm investing my life in others and the daily need to fight selfishness.
Hey...don't know if you remember, but I sure did enjoy getting to visit with you for a while right before the Good Friday service at BC. It was a fun conversation :)

My favorite quote this year: "We can not blame the darkness for being dark but we must blame the light for not shining into the darkness" Craig Gross. This really sturck me this year because I think I have been blaming the darkness for being dark when maybe I being in the light should be working more on shining into that darkness...
"Kindness is just love with it's work boots on."
How true is that?
Buffy
I don't know where I heard this, but I love it and it changed the way I think about myself in a big way:
"You may as well be yourself; everyone else is already taken!"
Isn't that wonderful! God knew what He was doing when He made you and me, so love it!

My favorite quote right now is from the same author, Mark Batterson, from his book, "The Wild Goose Chase" - - -
"When did we start to believe God wanted us to go safe places to do easy things?"

I love quotes by D.L. Moody, G.K. Chesterton and Mother Teresa. Here are a few of my other favorites, though.
"When we don't have the guts to step out in faith and chase lions, then God is robbed of the glory that rightfully belongs to him." Mark Batterson
(I'm not really familiar with him either, but a relative shared that quote with me a while back and I love it).
"Do not let what you cannot do interfere with what you can do." Coach John Wooden
And I have seen several versions of the following E.B. White quote--not sure which one(s) to list as correct, but I'm listing my favorite version.
"I wake up in the morning torn between the desire to save the world and to enjoy the world. This makes it hard to plan the day."
--J.
"We are all faced with a series of great opportunities brilliantly disguised as impossible situations." Charles Swindoll
I personally like Amanda's quote. It's amazing what things come out of children's mouths that inspire us! Okay, okay, I like the other 2 as well, even if Beth's is hard to understand.
This is a quote by CH Spurgeon that has been on my refrigerator for at least a month now as a barometer for me daily:
"Whatever God has made prominent in His word, He intended to be conspicuous in our lives!"
Chew that cud for a while, hunny!
When the black breath blows
and death's shadow grows
and all lights pass
come athelas! come athelas!
Life to the dying
In the king's hand lying!
J.R.R. Tolkien, The Return of the King
In Middle Earth, athelas (or kingsfoil)is a plant that has miraculous healing powers, but only in the hands of the king. Otherwise it is just a fragrant plant with little use. It is my prayer to be as kingsfoil in the hands of my King; without Him I am not able to do much, but in His hands I can set people free from darkness and despair.

I collect quotes -- yours was indeed very inspiring. Here's one that I like.

"Brightly colored sunsets and starry heavens, majestic mountains and shining seas, and fragrant fields and fresh-cut flowers are not even half as beautiful as a soul who is serving Jesus out of love, through the wear and tear of an ordinary, unpoetic life." ~ Frederick William Faber, Anglican preacher and composer of "Faith of Our Fathers"
Melissa, I'm all over this post. I love quotes and collect them over the year in "Word" and then print off and tuck them in my journal from year to year. ;-)
Bless all of you and tons of love. Counting down for HOUSTON!
Lovingly,
Yolanda
The quote is actually a conversation with my son (now 8) when he was about 3. I was telling him all the cute stuff he did when he was a baby, and he was giggling and laughing. Then his total expression changed to a completely serious look. He looked me in the eyes and said, "When I was in your belly, I talked to Jesus." I have clung to that as gospel truth.
Peace,

Me again...
Just wanted to say that I can't get the Mark Batterson quote out of my head. I had to copy it out for four other sisters.
Thanks for sharing it!!!
Sister Lynn
This may already be posted, but I haven't had time to read all of the quotes posted:
"A man can no more diminish God's glory by refusing to worship Him than a lunatic can put out the sun by scribbling the word, 'darkness' on the walls of his cell." C.S. Lewis
"Defending the Bible is like defending a lion - you don't defend the Lion, you just let him loose He'll defend himself!"
C. Spurgeon.
I love this quote b/c it makes me remember that our King is the Lion of the Tribe of Judah!!!
Thanks to all those military families out there reading, you are sacrificing more than i'll ever know. And for those who have served - THANK YOU!!!!
And a very happy blessed holiday weekend to all of you!
Forgot to put a quote earlier. Watch out cause this one is really deep....
If "ifs" and "buts" were candy and nuts we would all have a Merry Christmas.
My husband handed down to him by his father. :o)
Two of my recent favs.....
"People are hungry for God. What a terrible meeting it would be with our neighbor if we give them only ourselves." Mother Teresa
"Truly to believe is a terrible agony, very hard for weak and slothful humanity….Not to pray, not to be a true Christian, is to declare a reluctance to live life to the full. It is the choice of a small, warm, selfish life….The great life that is possible in God has infinitely more to offer. It would be like Rembrandt refusing to paint because he could live on his wife’s money" Wendy Beckett
"There are two lasting bequests we can give our children. One is roots, and the other is wings."
Hodding Carter
My daughter used this quote as part of her high school graduation speech. When she spoke about her dad and me and used this quote I was about to bawl. It meant so much to hear her say that we not only taught her, but lived it. (sigh)
As so many are graduating and taking the next step in life, I thought this was a good quote to share. As parents we've hopefully given our children unconditional love & taught them like the Bible says to in Deuteronomy 6:6-9... they'll have roots. Then we must give them our blessings and tell them to go and dream big and we let them know we have faith and believe in them. Letting go and watching them fly away isn't easy, but necessary.
First..our pastor just did a sermon series based on Mark Batterson's book "In the pit with a Lion on a Snowy Day". Rocked our church's world big time. Seriously.
Second...my quote comes from a little book called "The Red Sea Rules" by Robert J. Morgan. In fact, I just posted about this quote this morning.
"So take a deep breath and recall this deep secrect of the Christian life: when you are in a difficult place, realize that the Lord either placed you there or allowed you to be there, for reasons perhaps known for now only to Himself. The same God who led you in will lead you out."
"I am concerned with a certain way of looking at life, which was created in me by the fairy tales, but has since been ratified by mere facts." - G.K. Chesterton
The book "Waking the Dead: the Glory of a Heart Fully Alive" by John Eldredge is full of wonderful, inspiring quotes. That book really helped me to see more clearly, the strategy of our Enemy - and that we do have to be on guard - daily, hourly... every moment. That's where walking in the Spirit comes in...
This one never fails to crack me up:
"The less people know about how sausages and laws are made, the better they'll sleep at night."
- Otto von Bismarck
Sad, but true. ;)
Oh, there are just too many!
"Don't ask, 'Is this right or is this wrong?" I instead ask, 'Does this glorify God?" John Piper
"You think life goes on forever? You think behind every chance is another chance and another one and another one? It's the worst kind of extravegance the way you spend your chances, Birdie." the mother from Hope Floats
"It's a good thing I ain't scairt to be lazy" Augustus Mcrae from Lonesome Dove
Mrs. Melissa, I sure do love these quotes! Your quote makes me want to be braver and more courageous. Spiritual Mom Beth's quote makes me think of perseverance, and Little Momma's quote makes me think of my nephews-funny!
My recent fav quote is something my sister AND my husband said to me in moments of pitifully sad anxiety and complaining (not good!):
"Set your mind on things above!!"
Love it when the Lord gives the same message to different loved ones for me! HE IS GOOD:)
Love ya'll:)IN HIM,

My favorite comes from when my little guy was just a teeny thing. He'd gone to my mom's house for the day, and played in her pantry (a favorite pastime which he has not outgrown yet). He was about 2 or 3, and came out of the pantry with a bag of coconut flakes. Looking perplexed, he looked up at my mom and said:
"Fingernails, gramma?"
:)
Funny, my favorite quote as of late is something I got from one of your blog posts. I have it on a sticky note right here.
"The scriptures are too profound just to read in isolation of the real world. They must be read and lived." by Melissa Fitzpatrick
Marcy, Redmond, OR
Faith is not believing God can it is knowing He will.
Mimi, Henry Wadsworth Longfellow is my favorite poet, and I had memorized that whole poem years ago but had not thought about it forever. I am going to look it up. :)
My quote:
"Laugther is the lifeboat you tumble into just before the waters close over your head."
(not sure where I found this, it is in my old notebook of quotes I have collected, so of course I am loving this post.)
and:
"God." -Beth Moore-
Blessings, karen :):)
Loved your quote, Melissa. That one spoke to me quite loudly this morning. Thank you! I have two that are coming to mind this morning:
First, ironically enough is by your mother:
"If I am going to err, let me err on the side of belief."
Second..I am not entirely sure who said it first. I see it attributed to Maya Angelou, Max Lucado and others...but it is:
"A woman's hearty should be so hidden in God, that man should have to seek Him to find her."
Thanks for the post this morning!
Comparison is the thief of all Joy!
(not sure who said it?)
"Don't question in the darkness what God revealed in the light." - my dad
This is a quote from my spiritual dad. It is one of my favorites. But reading all the quotes has been encouraging!
"People may forget the things you did. People may forget the things you said. But people will never forget the way you made them feel."
Gail
I needed that quote! I always think of myself as such a non-risk-taker at heart... but I suspect that's not who God truly created me to be!
My favorite quote today:
"Satan smiles when we make plans and he laughs when we get too busy. But he trembles when we pray!"
~Corrie Ten Boom
"In each of my friends there is something that only some other friend can fully bring out. By myself I am not large enough to call the whole man into activity; I want other lights than my own to show all his facets." ~ CS Lewis
This one is my recent favorite. Directly contradicts a woman's tendency to limit her circle of friends. The more, the merrier I say! :)
Pastor Charles Stanley frequently says this, and it encourages me greatly:
"Obey God and leave the circumstances to Him."
Denise/GA
Love this post AND quotes, Melissa!
Heard this at revival in church but can't recall speaker.
"A need seen is an assignment given."
and don't know who said this either:
"Go the extra mile -- it's never crowded."
I have several....from a recent sermon.
In the places of great bounty and great provision without God is death, and in the places of death and desert with God, there is provision.
God's abundant blessings always flow out of the hard places. The meaning of the desert is that you will never be able to taste the sweetness of God's fountain until all of the other brooks in your life dry up.
As long as you keep drinking from other wells, you will never see that God is all you have.
What the desert teaches us is that God is all that we have, therefore, He is all that we need. You will never know that God is all that you need until you know that He is all that you have.
These are all from my favorite pastor! :)
Susan in OKC
Wish I could remember who said this first, was it Beth?
"You are eternally valued, unconditionally accepted and gifted to fulfill His purpose"
Praying always for Beth, Keith and the ministry.

I've already posted, but several years ago, I heard your precious Mamma (BethMoore) say this on her radio program. It stuck with me that day and is still written in my checkbook:
"Victory always begins with a cry for help."

God calls you holy. With His presence inside of you, HE will produce the impossible through you. Why settle for anything less?
"Never let us be guilty of sacrificing any portion of truth on the altar of peace." A 19th century Anglican leader
(I just recently came across this quote and it's my current new favorite).
I'm so glad you love quotes! I've been accumulating a bunch of fave quotes and plan to wall paper my laundry room with them (the one room in the house where I could use good food for thought and inspiration!)
Warm in Alaska.
I just heard this one last night:
"God allows in His wisdom that which He could easily prevent by His power." Author Unknown
Ouch! Sometimes it's hard to grow.
I have to follow Amanda's train of thought as a mother so my favorite quote/prayer is that of my 2 yr son's.
I was leading him in prayer at breakfast. I would say a prayer phrase and then he would repeat me. It went like this....(me) "Thank you God for pancakes" (2 yo) "thank you Gawd for panquakes" ....(Me) "Thank you God for bananas" (2yo) "Thank you Gawd for nanas" ...(me) "Thank you God for juice" (2 yo) "thank you gawd for juice"...(Me) Amen.....(2yo Looking up to me with confusion!) "Thank you Gawd for Syrup!!)
God is so good! Thank you God for our children!!

To speak to God on behalf of man is probably the highest service any of us can render. The next is to speak to men in the name of Jesus. Either is possible through His grace. Corrie ten Boom
"Our hearts are all the same color"
Heard that one this week in a movie of several different fables then discussed it with my fourth graders at school. We all quoted it together. :)
"If you're coming to see us, come without warning. If you're coming to see the house, call ahead."
Julie Perkins Cantrell
My most favorite: "Mommy, do we have time to just love on each other for a while?"

Mark, I'm so glad that you dropped by. I'm hoping to get my hands on a couple of your books this week. Thanks for using your words to inspire so many of us.
Cordially,

I love quotes! Here's one of my favorites...no idea of the author...
HAVE A GREAT DAY, UNLESS YOU'VE MADE OTHER PLANS.
Remember to pray for our troops and their families.
Little Monkey's Mama
"Even though I'm almost seventy years old, I got a lot to learn too. I used to spend a lotta time worryin that I was different from other people, even from other homeless folks.....But I found out everybody's different--the same kind of different as me. We're all just regular folks walkin down the road God done set in front of us.
The truth about it is, whether we is rich or poor or somethin in between, this earth ain't no final restin place. So in a way, we is all homeless--just workin our way toward home."
Denver Moore
The last few lines from his book, Same Kind of Different As Me.
Be the kind of woman, that when you wake up in the morning the devil says, "Oh dang! She's awake!" - unknown
"Pull up your big girl panties and get over it." - Gail Pitman
"If you don't want to get caught doing something you shouldn't be doing, don't do it." - me

I'm just loving all these quotes. Making copies of all of them! Can we just keep this going?!
My quote of the day is from the mouth of a 4 year old boy at the nail shop yesterday. His sweet grandmother was trying to get him to behave. And I tell you, he stood up and announced to all of us, "I just don't want to be good today, I just can't do it!"
Of course we all had a good laugh...for a few minutes anyway! Some days you just can't do it. But Jesus loves us anyway.
This is something I read recently that I've been mulling over...
"The next step in the journey of equality is to get to a place where we accept that you cannot choose your neighbor. In the Global Village, distance no longer decides who is your neighbor, and 'Love thy neighbor' is not advice, it's a command." ~Bono (referring to the West's treatment of Africans)
Other favorite quote....
"Do the thang, girls. Let's just DO the thang!" ~Beth Moore =)
