The Taste Buds of a Ten-Year-Old

Keith walks through the door gruffly and slaps a plastic bag on the kitchen counter.

Him: “You wanna hear something awful?”

Me, bracing myself because I really didn’t want to hear something awful but my man was clearly disturbed: “What is it, Baby? What happened?”

Him: “You can’t even get a Moon Pie at Kroger anymore. You can’t get the danged thing at Randall’s. You can’t even get one at Amanda’s fancy HEB. Not a Moon Pie on a single shelf. Good grief.”

Me: Silent. Staring. Baffled.

Him: “Do you know the only place in this town you can find a Moon Pie anymore is Bass Pro Shop?”

Me: “I had no idea.”

But, thought to myself that it might explain some things. However, I didn’t say that. He was too raw. Been through too much. This was no time to speak the truth in love. This was the time for lies.

Me again: “That’s awful, Honey. I’m so sorry.”

There was only one thing that was going to make my man feel better. Our spirits intertwined, we both seemed to know. I nodded toward the bag and he opened it. He pulled out a chocolate Moon Pie. I pulled out a banana Moon Pie. And we ate them in total silence.

But in my heart I felt that inner glee bloggers feel when you know that you’ve just had an encounter that is destined to become a spectacular blog post. It’s a rush of sparkling, clean adrenalin. Keith was just about to head to the ranch so I said, plotting, of course, “Honey, do you want me to just send you with a couple of these and save the rest?” (He’d gotten a large bag full. After all, they’re hard to find.) So, he said, just as I knew he would, “Yep, that’s what we better do.”

So he headed out the door and down I-10 with a ration of one-a-day and I headed to work with a bag of Moon Pies. On my way, I called AJ and said, “Bring your camera to lunch. I have some pictures I need you to take for a blog post. It’s going to be great.” Only, when she came to lunch, between the baby and all the commotion of the restaurant, she didn’t have time to take the shots.

Her: “Can I take them home with me and do it there?”

Me: “Yep, and then be sure to give them to Curtis.” And that was the exact moment the plan went totally awry. MY MEANING WAS: GIVE THEM TO CURTIS SO HE CAN BRING THEM BACK TO WORK AND I CAN RETURN THEM UNSCATHED TO THE KITCHEN OF KEITH MOORE, MY MOON PIE MAN.

Thinking we clearly understood one another, I promptly forgot.

Until last night after Keith got home from the ranch and I heard the biggest ruckus in the kitchen followed by colorful choices of words.

Me: “What on earth is the matter?”

Him: “I can’t find my Moon Pies!”

Me, but only to self: “Oh my gosh. Please, no.”

So I text AJ: “Your father is tearing the kitchen apart looking for his Moon Pies. Where are they?”

Oh, the painful finality of her response. At times of crisis, all you can do is turn to Scripture.

“She took of the [Moon Pie] thereof, and did eat, and gave also unto her husband with her, and he did eat.”

And swore I’d told her to.

It was a rough night at the Moore house. Sometimes a man doesn’t need his woman. He just needs his Moon Pie. The man has the taste buds of a ten year-old.

Thank goodness, the sun came up again this morning even after a moonless night. But there will be a reckoning at Bass Pro today.

Here are the moon pies before things went wrong - very, very wrong.

And the bag from Bass Pro.

So, OK, Siestas. So it made me think about you. What treat from your childhood do you still long to have?

I knew my Chris and Keith would get along smashingly. He loves Moon Pies, too!

Wait, let me call him and find out where he gets them..."gas stations," says Chris, "oh and Little Debbie has a fair facsimile of them--But they are not Moon Pies."

So there you have it. That and now I'm singing, "Just a swingin'"

Love you!

Not sure whether to laugh or cry.

And I'm thinking that Curtis better hightail it to get 2 bags of those things.

It's always the seemingly little things that set us off, isn't it?!

Favorite indulgence from childhood: Cheetos and Dr. Pepper (together). Or a coke float.

Pretty much anything chocolate will do for me. If I've bought something special and my kids or husband even look at it like they're going to ask for a bite, I growl and snap like a dog! I'm that way with Pepsi too.

My poor family!

My grandma's peanutbutter ricekrispy treats. NOONE could mix the peanut butter in in just the right proportion the way that she did. NOBODY!

Now I guess I gotta wait til Heaven to get em again. Cause I KNOW she is fillin up her squirrel cookie jar with em just for me! (and, in Heaven, Rocky's tail is probabaly not chipped - a remnant from someone who was just too short to get it down herself and just too impatient to wait fro Grandma to get it down for her).

Great new look. Ok now for my long for snack/desert from when I was a kid. Hostess Suzy-Q's. Every time I walk by them at the store I long to have one. Only problem is you have to buy a whole box and I don't need a whole box of them.

Thanks for the good laugh today. Life has been crazy busy. Kim B. in AZ

Hilarious, Beth :) When I think of childhood treats, I think of those Pixie sticks, but I haven't had one for ages -- and not sure I'd even want one now! :)

Cute new blog look. For some reason the size of print is kind of awkward for me, though -- think it has something to do with trying to focus in with my bifocals. Good grief! :)

That is just what I needed this morning. A full on LAUGH OUT LOUD blog. Hilarious! Growing up in a small town in Texas, my Dad would make some stops at this little convenience store that had the BEST coke icee's. They were like no other! Seriously. I have not had anything like them. De-lish! Many years later, Dad and I paid a visit to this little store only to find out they changed owners and that icee machine was done away with. Oh the pain I felt. I still long and crave for that wonderful, cold, give-you-a-brain-freeze icee today. :(

ROTFL over here!!! Too funny!!! Poor Keith!!! :)

Moon Pies are really good. So are those little black cup cakes with the white icing squiggled on top...???...oh, the name escapes me.....DING-DONGS, that's it! Ding-Dongs. Loved those as a child! I'm presently working my tushie off to try and lose some weight this summer so no Ding-Dongs in my immediate future. Maybe after summer. :)

Blessings,
Sharon

Crack me up!! I miss the chocolate ice cream with swirls of peanut butter from Baskin’ Robbins. We would ride our bikes there after school every day before my mom returned home from work. I don’t know if the evidence of our chocolate mustaches gave us away or not.

Necco wafer candy. My sister and I got them every Saturday morning when my Mom took us to get groceries at the IGA store in Lincoln, Nebraska. The brown(chocolate) were the best although the black, green and yellow were mighty good. The roll would usually last through the weekend, unless we were especially disciplined and ate only a few each day through the week. Still love them. Love my Mom. Love you all, too.

This made me laugh so hard!!! " Sometimes a man doesn't need his woman, he needs his moonpie"???? LOL!!!! And I too love it when you know that you have a great "blog subjuct"~~~ Have a blessed weekend~ Deanna

Hostess fruit pies from the day old bread store. My Mother kept them in the garage in the freezer and we would STEAL them from the freezer and eat them STILL FROZEN. Unfortunately this bit of fruit pie revelry only lasted one summer. Her frugalness was short-lived and she wouldn't buy them at the normal grocery store.
The only other thing is I cannot, to this day, resist the merry jingle of the ice cream man's truck. We are like mad animals running around the house digging up change and sending the littlest (now 13) out to flag him down. Push-up pops...who can resist?

FUNNY! I thought my husband was the only person who ate those things.

That's hysterical! My dad recently got tranferred to North Carolina, and the one thing he brought to us during a recent visit was a Moon Pie :) My six-year old didn't seem to understand the sacredness of this treat, even though I allowed him to have his share for breakfast one morning before school. He took a bite and asked for cereal. I ate the rest :)

I agree with Amanda about school food. My elementary and middle schools had THE BEST rectangle slices of pepperoni pizza EVER. I can still taste it if I close my eyes real tight and think hard. Yuuuum.

Okay. My childhood love was Spagettio's. Chef Boyardee brand in the BLUE can. They've changed them. I bought some recently. The ones back then did NOT smell like dog food and have a strange tin-like aftertaste. Right? Anybody?

My favorite candy when i was a kid, was the big Jolly Rancher Candy Sticks. They were about an inch wide, and 5-6 inches long...

Perhaps it was the thrill of the inherent danger in getting one or all of my teeth stuck - which proved to especially menacing if i had one or more loose teeth, at the time... or the fact that it became not too dissimilar from a type of weapon, forming a sharp point as the stick was consumed... what an adventure in enjoying a shiny, clear delicious candy!

Even more titillating was the occasion to take the dare to choose the Fire stick. Nobody needed to triple-dog dare me to get me to try it... a double-dog dare usually did the trick.

Ah! What i wouldn't give to enjoy one, these days. I'm assuming they were discontinued as child safety laws were improved upon. lol

If you are ever in need of some just post a blog to let me know & I could ship you some!!

Oh, & one of my favorite childhood snacks was a candy bar called a Marathon bar. It was sort of like a braided rope of caramel & it was coated in chocolate. I don't think they make them anymore. I was a child in the 70's & 80's & I think I last remember seeing them in stores around the early 80's.

Jell-O pudding pops. I have talked about these for years. Oh my goodness, they are heavenly. Last year, I went to Wal-mart one Saturday and wanted a treat and saw a box that looked exactly like they used to look. I actually teared up and called my husband immediately. We have had many conversations about the joy of a pudding pop. I still think about them almost every time I watch the Cosby Show since it was Mr. Cosby himself who first sold me on these. I bought them and we got one out immediately when I got home... they aren't the same. What a letdown! They just taste like fudgesicles. There was something so delicately delicious about the creaminess of the originals that just can't be found again. I guess my next try is just whipping up a batch of chocolate pudding and putting them in ice trays with popsicle sticks. We shall see if my tastebuds can be awakened once more to the exhiliration those little popsicles brought me 20 years ago. :)

WHAT A CUTE NEW BLOG DESIGN!!!

Hilarious story about Keith. My father-in-law also has the taste buds of a 10 year old. He can eat gummy worms like it's his JOB.

I, myself, have never been a Moon-Pie connoisseur. Probably because my dad always bought them for his "boys only" fishing trips. So I rebuked them out of sheer protest.

I'd much prefer the Little Debbie Fudge Rounds and Swiss Rolls. O. My. Yum.

Mine would be Pop Rocks, Tart & Tinies, and those yummy, sugary Pixy Sticks.

But, they actually have this cool machine at the campground [where my Mom & I are seasonal campers-mostly weekends, though], and it has like 10 spout like things where you can choose the flavors of the Pixy Stick type of candy.

And, this will be our first weekend camping [or maybe half weekend, depending upon the weather]. However, do not worry about us. We are all prepared, as "we" [Mom & me] have a 5th wheel trailer, with nearly everything that one could want,
and, we are even bringing along an electric blanket in case it gets too cold at night.

And, by the way, I do not think I have ever tried a Moon Pie ~

THE BEST!! I have to go to a penny candy store in Romeo, Michigan to get them...oh about 30 miles away...On the way back from the cidermill in October is my yearly run to pick them up. Moon Pies are good..something about marshmellow..

If your talking comfort snacks, I agree with those who say Coke in a glass bottle -- the 1970's bottles that is ... tall, thick and cold bottles. But it's complete when you drink it with some Ho-Ho's ... in the back of a pickup ... going down a country road ... in the summer ... just before dusk. (have I gone too far??)

And as far as other comfort foods -- well nothing beats fried bologna with a bit of mustard on white bread. Being "poor" Ozark people (we never knew we were), my dad often referred to it as "Missouri Round Steak."

There is nothing worse than having a hankerin for something but you just don't know what it is. And... searching the kitchen - first the refrigerator. You know what I'm talking about. You open the frig once than twice than three times. Thinking somehow something changed since the first time you opened the door. Then you search the cupboards. To no avail. Nothing is worse than not being able to satisfy that desire. That need for...what ever you think your needing. Especially hard when you can't figure out what that something would even be. Alas you go to bed.....unsatisfied. Tomorrow is a new day Scarlet.

Orange Creamsicles - holy cow, had not thought about those in a long time. On Sunday afternoons, we would always take a discover, (fill in the blank of where ever we were living), trip and we would always find one of those little stores, and we were allowed to get a bag of candy or whatever treat. My brothers always, always, got peanuts to pour in a little coke, but I always got a creamsicle!

thanks for asking and thanks for sharing your life with us.

Let's hear a shoutout for the candy cigerettes! Loved those things and thought I was so cool. And the wax bottles with the sweet juice inside, yum. And how about the candy necklace? Jewelry you could eat!

There was a cookie I loved, I believe the name was "Rock 'n Roll". They were kinda like a spice cookie with pink icing on them. I grew up in rural North Carolina and I used to get a pack of Rock N Roll cookies with a grape soda. Ummm, wish I had one now!

OH Goodness. I can't even imagine what it was like to be on the receiving end of that text.

So, the other day my husband asks me if it's in the budget to get more ice cream. I said we had to be careful, but I could manage to get some. So he said not to worry about it.

The night before we had combined the last 2 half gallon containers because there wasn't quite enough in each to warrant them having their own space.

So, I finished it the next day. (OF COURSE after having gotten more) When he came home from work and saw the empty container in the sink (which I left there purposely to see if I knew him as well as I thought I did) he immediately opened the freezer.

I, in the next room, started laughing hysterically. He peeks around the corner at which time he was met with my remark: "You are so predictable."

Our almost 6 year old said, "Daddy is not predictable." To which his daddy replied, "On some things Ray, yes I am."

I'll check for some Moon Pies in Pittsburgh. Maybe you can stock up in June. :)

I've never had a Moon Pie! But do I know the feeling of what bloggers feel--the glee of what's going to be a spectacular blog post, too funny, I thought that was just me. :)

When my husband and I were dating, he in Canada and me in California, he'd send me Coffee Crisp bars, which you can't get in the States. He'd send me a box of them and I'd ration them. I'd take them to work in my lunch, and have one bite a day, during the week, so I'd finish the bar on Friday. Do you know what discipline that takes to rewrap a chocolate bar?? They don't put resealable closures on them for a reason.

Now that I am in Canada, though, and can get them anytime, they just don't taste the same, unless my husband buys one for me and brings it home, and yes, I eat the whole thing now.

Oh fun....we lived on a very strict budget when I was younger. Not complaining, I am thankful that I have that background. None the less we bought bobo store brand cookies when we were able to buy a treat at all. So excitement to me as I got older and started working where I could go to the store and sneak a bag of OREO'S or KEEBLER FUDGE STRIPE cookies. To this day I love them (now with a cup of coffee) and my children will tell you my goal in life when I became an adult with a family of my own was to have dessert every night. (I'm trying to pull back and maybe have dessert 2 or 3 nights a week). The woes of getting older and working harder to stay somewhat in shape. LOOOOVVVEE THEM OREOS.

Ha...Oh my did that blog make me laugh...and I needed a laugh today! It is in fact holy medicine, right? :) Thanks for sharing! I have written Blue Bell about an ice cream that was only around a couple of years and then discontinued. It seems everything i like is discontinued...treats at starbucks, la madeleine, etc. I'm sure it is due to the fact that I have wierd taste buds. The ice cream was called chocolate marshmallow crunch...the name speaks for itself. Yum! Console your man with the fact that at least he can find his moon pies somewhere. The gas stations usually have them....thats where I find my pink marshmallow balls when I want to indulge (I have no idea of their name but they are pink and filled with marshmallows so you can't go wrong.) Ok, this is entirely too long now, sorry. Praying for Melissa!

Beth, I loved that in the midst of it all that you thought of sharing the story with your siestas! And pray tell, let us know how you managed not to have a look on your face that would have given your plans away.
You see, I have three sisters and my dear husband knows by the look on my face just when he has given me material that just must be shared.
When you asked for childhood treats, I thought of meeting my Grandpa in New London, Wisconsin at a small bar called Manske's that served the best burgers. And then Grandpa would buy us an orange soda and a KitKat bar. Was there just a couple years ago for my uncle's 80th birthday and my cousin and I toasted our orange sodas in Grandpa's memory.

Moon Pies from a general store in Grassy Creek, NC were a family favorite for years. When we went to visit my Nana Ruth on her tobacco farm, my dad always bought boxes to last for a millennium or so.

Gummi worms. There were other faves, but that's what I eat the most of now.

Amanda's post about chicken fried chicken made me think about our new cafeteria manager at the elementary school where I work. When she put in her first big food order with the distributer, she ordered hamburger patties. The first time she served them for lunch, she tried one, and kept wondering, "Why does this taste like meatloaf?" She finally checked the box they came in and discovered that she had indeed mistakenly ordered meatloaf patties, but they looked exactly the same as the hamburgers so it took her all day to figure out the mistake. Talk about mystery meat!

In fact, looking back, I think she may not be the first cafeteria manager to make that mistake. ;-)

Beth - You (and Keith) need to come to Chattanooga, home of the Moon Pie bakery. When you drive by it, you can smell them... And of course they are fresher when you buy them here. A Moon Pie and an RC Cola - now that is a treat!

My favorite childhood treats - those zingers cakes with teh raspberry and coconut on the outside. There were days in high school (hanging head in shame) where that was what I ate for lunch.

Other thing I loved when we lived in Scotland was something called (I think) "Cremola Foam" which was a powder you added to water - which flavored it but also made it fizz and foam....think a flavored Alka-seltzer. Loved it then, but it sounds WEIRD now.

How in the world do you get what you want in a distant land? For me, it is an ice cream cone with chocolate chip on the bottom and chocolate chip mint on the top. My daddy used to take us to Baskin Robbins and he ordered that for himself, so naturally, I had to have it too. I was instantly hooked. I just remembered one more...Sixlets. There was an older gentleman in our Baptist church who used to park at the curb and open his trunk before church and give all the kids Sixlets he had bought at the Candy warehouse supply place in town. I've forgotten his name...will have to ask my Mother...but we practically acted like those Sixlets were gold. I could make a tube of them (and these were the TINY tubes) last through an entire sermon! Just let them melt on your tongue. Is it sad to think that one of the reasons I might love Jesus and church so much is because I have repressed memories of melting sixlets? LOL

I love...LOVE... LOVE... Moon Pies. Banana, is my MOON flavor of choice. I used to get one anytime we went on long rode trips... I loved it. Short road trips were candy bars or those awful candy cigarettes (my daddy smoked... I thought it was cool!)

But, I guess my absolute favorite treat from childhood is my daddy's favorite ice cream (mine, too) the ever elusive and hard to find "Banana Nut" flavor of Blue Bell Ice Cream. It runs a close second to the standing family fave dessert Momma's homemade Banana Pudding.

My nephew actually asked for this treat for my neice's birthday this year. Some of us are known to get our bowl before dinner because waiting too long means, yes, that is right - IT IS GONE!

Love the post, glad that there are still moon pies at Bass Pro Shop (Oh, and they sell them at Cabela's, too... I saw them there just the other day), now I'm off in search of my very own!

You are too hysterical Beth! Poor man. He was obviously traumatized.

I simply cannot imagine how you are able to occasionally eat a moon pie and yet have the figure of a twentyone year old.

It's not just Moon pies, if I remember correctly from your NYC trip, you also eat lots of other really yummy things that would make most others, um, gain weight!

It's ok Beth, there is no one else I would rather be jealous of than you!

I think the thing I drool over the thought of is a Krispy Kreme glazed donut! About once or twice a year I indulge but they too are getting harder and harder to find in the north country.

Love the new look.

Beth, I can't believe after the fuss he made over those things that you didn't write out a written agreement for Amanda to sign stating that she'd bring them back the next day. :)

On a totally different subject, I probably don't even need to ask this, but do you have Mandisa's latest album yet? From one beat lovin, dance lovin, soul sister to another, it's a must have! And the lyrics are incredible for anyone who's ever been set free! Glory to God, I can now say that includes me!!
