Melissa's Un-authoritative Midrash on the Academy Awards

So, did you watch the Academy Awards 2009 last night?

I almost missed it myself but thanks to a true friend of popular culture who thought to remind me, I caught the last several hours. Most award shows can’t sustain my attention but last night I thought the presentation was stunning.

I had several favorite moments but since it is Monday and we all have way too much to do, I’ll just give you two:

1) The dance tribute to the Musical for once again gaining momentum. The stage was full of fun performers like Beyonce’, Zac Efron, Vanessa Hudgens, and Amanda Seyfried all celebrating the once much-loved genre making its way back into mainstream popularity. Oh and I feel like inserting here: I still don’t like Musicals. I’m just not sassy enough to appreciate Musicals but my personal deficiency at this point does not steal my joy for those who are.

2) The gathering of five female Hollywood hall of famers (Shirley MacLaine, Nicole Kidman, Marion Cotillard, Sophia Loren, Halle Berry) to recognize the five female nominees for best actress in a leading role (the nominees were: Anne Hathaway, Angelina Jolie, Melissa Leo, Meryl Streep, and Kate Winslet). Shirley MacLaine’s speech to Anne Hathaway was so kind and gracious that I could barely make out that hideously mean yet brilliant character Ouiser from Steel Magnolias. And then I remembered why she was on the stage in the first place.

For those of you who didn’t watch, Kate Winslet won the much-coveted award for best performance by an actress in a leading role. One of the delightful things about watching the Academy Awards is that actors/actresses who often play it cool and composed can’t help but get expressive. Even though they’re all dolled up, they appear surprisingly taken off guard and even corny. I found the moments of cheesiness to be a little bit refreshing. For instance, the exquisite Kate Winslet was no longer a calm and sophisticated socialite restrained in a tight corset like she once was in Titanic, for she resembled a giggly little girl whose bursts of excitement hindered her words from keeping up with her heart. She even waved to her Daddy out in the crowd. I loved when she said:

“I’d be lying if I said I hadn’t made a version of this speech before, I think I was probably eight years old and staring into the bathroom mirror. And this (holding up her statuette) would’ve been a shampoo bottle. Well, it’s not a shampoo bottle now!”

Oh the glory of seeing the fruit of one’s hard work and determination actually realized. You can almost be emotionally moved by it.

I bash Hollywood quite a bit. I’m especially hard on the women. I wonder if it has anything to do with how beautiful they are…? But, I’ve gotta admit, those chics work hard! It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to realize that they are dang good at what they do, even if we personally wouldn’t morally approve of the movie they star in. Now, you’re thinking, “Do you have any idea how much they get paid, Melissa???” Point well taken. But still.

I’m taking their example of hard work and excellence as a challenge this week. Notice that I didn’t say I am taking their moral excellence as a challenge. Please don’t misunderstand me. But back to the point-- Since I am paid to be a research assistant what this means for me is sitting down with my technical books, articles, and commentaries and reading them like Angelina Jolie would read her script. Now you might think that my job sounds fun and easy, but it isn’t all fun and games. There are days I read small print for eight hours straight. Did I mention I have bi-focals? That's because I never wear them. Anyway, there are times during the day when I get bored and want to take a nap just like you probably do. I love my job and I find great satisfaction in it but it is still a job and sometimes it is very hard.

This week I don’t want to just do a good job; I want to do an excellent job. From the corporate woman, to the student, all the way to the stay-at-home Mom, we’ve all been given important and often daunting tasks. Let’s be excellent at what we do here on this earth. We may never single-handedly change the world and get to sport Oscar de la Renta evening wear all at the same time but we can be excellent in the various spheres of influence we’ve been given by the Lord.

And on a broad spiritual level, may we continue to persevere in our callings and prove ourselves to be good stewards of our time and resources so that one day we may taste sweet and ultimate victory. A life lived excellently as unto the Lord. No earthly acknowledgment, not even Shirley MacLaine’s toast to Anne Hathaway, could ever hold a candle to the Master’s words:

“Well done, good and faithful servant…Enter into the joy of your master.”

Melissa, I thought EXACTLY the same thing when those five women walked out on that stage! Five women who have excelled in their fields. You've gotta give 'em that. I thought, let there be women of excellence among the people of God! We were thinking the same thought, young lady. Love this post! I want to pursue excellence this week, too. Lord, overtake and enable us.

This was my prayer this very morning, as I looked at my daunting list of to-do's and asked the Lord to multiply my time and help me be a good steward of it. I so want to be excellent in the work I do for Him, be it a huge, flashy task or one completely mundane.

I have to confess, however, that I wouldn't mind a little Oscar de la Renta every now and then! :o)

Excellently said Melissa. I'm personally not that taken with awards shows though I know many who are. I do believe it is important to watch the path of our culture and as unfortunate as it is, Hollywood does play a part. I WAS excited to hear that a small budget film casted and made in India, with unknown actors, with rags to riches story, made a huge sweep with the awards. Now what does that say about our culture?

Interesting post. For sure it gives me food for thought.
I caught a little of the show last night, mostly in snippets. I did love Miley's dress!

I'm off to clean the house as if an 'Oscar' depended on it!

I have a lot to do this week, so this is perfect for me. The most important thing is to host a wonderful bridal shower. And while planning and preparing for that I still have my full time job of Mommy and I have to catch up from being sick. So when I work this week, I must be excellent, so I don't have to do it again later. :-)
Thank you for the challenge.

Well-said! And Shirley MacLaine's "toast" to Anne Hathaway was by far the most eloquent and gracious of the five, that's for sure! I want to take as my role model for excellence, earthly, anyway, that Queen of All Things, Meryl Streep!

Right On! Melissa,

I loved your best moments, they were mine as well. I also loved the speech the Ledger family gave on behalf of Heath; But I have to say, my most touched and remembered moment was the speech given by the best screenplay winner who wrote MILK. He expressed so kindly and truthfully to the young Gay and lesbian population that "they are of worth" and that "God loves you,"
These are true words and I enjoyed that even though the church is the LORD's, the gentleman seemed to separtate the fact that the church may act hateful sometimes but GOD LOVES YOU! I want to remember that! God saved me to, from rebellion and sin that seemed unredeemable; not for Him.

Let us encourage others who are not saved. We don't have to trade in our faith for favoritism or even pop culture - just live with a closed fist/open hand. We will never let go of the truth, because the truth will never let us go or forsake us - But let us show the love we know in our lives, let Jesus shine through us. And if you are like me and you are not sure if that is happening or even how it happens or if it ever will; talk to God and He does the rest.

"The word of God is like a lion; you don't have to defend it, you just turn it loose" Charles Spurgeon

Let's let God turn it loose and love those around us. remember the opposite of love is hate.

PS: My mom and I are going to Stagecoach for my birthday in California - Miranda Lambert, Brad Paisley, Kenny Chesney...I AM SO EXCITED!

So, I'm in, I'll go after excellence this week, because I can't help but think there is a LOT of joy in excellence. I want that thrill of 'Well done Good and Faithful servant.' I get excited just typing those words.
Whoo Hoo, thanks Melissa what an awesome post.

The Journey Continues ~

I WOULD LIKE TO THANK THE ACADEMY FOR THIS GREAT BLOGSPOT!!!
:) LOL ~

YOu are correct in your assumption of actors Melissa!

ACTION, ACTION, ACTION!!!
Actors = (that is what they call themselves whether male or female), are dedicated to their desire to dialogue!!
As Shakespeare put it
"They are the abstracts and brief chronicles of the time."

I come from a family of Actors, directors and musicians ~ Our family members have actually receive that "shampoo bottle" as Kate shared, on more than one occassion. Having a HEAVY Golden Trophy does not get you to Heaven! It opens the doors of life on earth ~ Let's PRAY for more CHRIST CENTERED ACTORS TO FILL OUR THEATER'S, STAGES,~ I was actually surprised by the comments of an actor on Barbara Walters after the Oscars.... He said a Oscar doesn't feed you, nor does it bring you love=relationship(changed this quote)nor does it get you to Heaven! SO great! Also, loved hearing that the Jonas brothers are Christians who all wear purity rings... saving themselves for their future spouse!! AMEN ~
OUR PURPOSE ON LIFE IS THE FOLLOWING ~
LOVE, LOVE, LOVE AND SHARE OUR STORIES/TESTIMONIES/LIFE WITH OTHERS!!! NON ARE PERFECT
(I am the FIRST to raise my hand) ~ some are given gifts that others wish & dream for, and some are given gifts that are humbling and bring the most important gift of all L O V E to OTHERS!!!

I alway's enjoy your thoughts and comments Melissa,Beth, Amanda ~
You are all ACADEMY AWARD WINNERS TO US SIESTA'S ~ you bring truth, heart, voice, music ( that one is for travis - sorry beth) and desire to bring HIStory to us with APPLAUSE AND STANDING OVATIONS!!!!

Awesome post, Melissa! I loved it when they had the previous winners acknowledging the current nominees. It was like a hall of fame. So true how you said about pursuing excellance in our walk. It reminds me of in the Beth study, "Believing God" when she talks about the "Halls of Faith," and when she asks if at the end of Hebrews 11, if there was one extra verse and if it said "By faith, [your name here]...." and what your story would be in the "Halls of Faith" that God would write about you. That has stuck with me for years. This was a very encouraging word for this week, Melissa. Bravo! =)

Our sermon at church yestereday was on something very similar so I believe God is hitting on something here.

These are very timely words for me. I'm a returning student as a mom of three kids ages 17 and 12 yr old twins. I'm in nursing school and it's really tough (not just on me, but the family too). Last week I hit an all time low, doing the worst I've ever done on a test. I think it was fear, but mostly embarrassment as I don't usually do that low. Pride crept in. I started to doubt that I'd be able to finish this May like I planned.

The very next day I found myself in an awful situation....I had to do CPR on a grocery store employee who had had an apparent heart attack while he was at work. I was scared to death. He didn't make it, but it really pressed heavy on my heart that I've been taking too lightly all the studying and the things I'm learning. While I study hard, it's just not enough. People's lives are affected and I shouldn't take this calling lightly. No one, no matter what the calling is, should take it lightly.

I pray that God finds my effort worthy. And that I pass too. :)

I love this scripture from 1 Corinthians 15:58 (Amp):

"Therefore, my beloved brethren, be firm (steadfast), immovable, always abounding in the work of the Lord [always being superior, excelling, doing more than enough in the service of the Lord], knowing and being continually aware that your labor in the Lord is not futile [it is never wasted or to no purpose]."

I love the thought of being "superior, excelling, doing more than enough" not for any reward here on earth, but for an eternal reward in Him.

Melissa -- I'm with you -- these women do excel in their fields and to excel means you work hard. You may get a lucky first break, but that won't sustain you.

For you it's research and that's means reading alot to glean the nuggets needed.
For me, it's writing and marketing. I have to put my fanny in the chair and write the words onto the page. I can ask God for His grace as I do this and I can ask for His help, but I have to sit down and do it.

It's all work. Whether you're wiping the nose of a toddler (been there) or writing a book (been there) or managing a Fortune 500 company (haven't been there) or acting in a movie(haven't been there, either). It's work and you have to show up and do it.

I'm praying that the Lord gives me the wisdom to know which task to tackle first. I want to glorify Him in all I do.

Although, I have to admit, Melissa, I am extremely disappointed that you do not like musicals.

We have good friends, who are missionaries. And John always says that he hates musicals, because people don't just break into song like that. However, after 20 years of friendship and seeing our family doing just that--I hope we have changed his mind for at least that one point.

We just break into song all the time!

Love you like crazy, Melissa! Really. And praying for your prayer to be answered in a mighty way.

I SO love being a part of this community of women! I can't Thank God enough for all of you!

In response to a comment upthread: let's remember that some of our own siestas, as well as other people just as worthy and who also reflect the Imago Dei, may be relying on government assistance right now, and there is no shame in that. If you need help, get it. And unless you're supporting an impoverished family in addition to your own--I don't mean giving a little bit of help, I mean unless you are the *only reason* they're not on TANF--let's be careful about slamming programs that help folks who need helping.

Melissa, well played. I am writing a paper today and had convinced myself I didn't need to aspire to excellence, just to "good enough." I may not hit the mark on excellence, but I should at least aspire to it! How else do we get better? As a professor of mine said last year, "You have not yet become what you are."

And how much did I love Sean Penn saying "I want to make it clear that I know how hard I make it to appreciate me often"? Who among us can't say that? "I realize I'm unloveable at times, thanks for loving me anyway."

Hey Melissa,

Thanks so much for the reminder and encouragement. Like most women, I have a million and one things to do, especially in the next two weeks...mid-terms (almost done!), TAKING CARE OF A FAMILY and to make my life even more uh, interesting, I'm getting a puppy. I need to get one and train her now before I graduate and go to work in the world.

I did not watch the awards, what did I watch? Oh, I did watch Charles Stanley last night (I needed two sermons yesterday, because I can get so ugly). I wanted to watch my Billy Graham DVD, but it didn't happen. I love that man and I can't wait to hang out with Ruth Bell in heaven. She has been my biggest influence since becoming a Christian and your Mom is the best Bible teacher EVAH and has brought me closer to Christ through her studies. Both of them have given me things, in different ways, that I can't even express how much they've meant.

I'm sorry, but I LOVE Shirley MacLaine. I have watched "Terms of Endearment" more times than I can count and I love her in "Steel Magnolias" too. I'm a big Debra Winger fan, if I'm a fan at all, b/c that girl plays such realistic roles and she is one great actress. I just wish that some of these awesome movies did not have cussing. I watched "On Golden Pond" the other night and I had forgotten how much cussing is in that movie and it does not need to be there. I watched it when I was little, but I was totally desensitized to cussing then. I bragged on myself for finding it at Goodwill and then I go to Target and they have the DVD for five dollars more. Poor Jeff Bridges is so under-estimated. He is such a great actor, playing such a dufus on ToE. He got me in "Because of Winn-Dixie"---one of the greatest movies of all time.

My husband used to give me grief over liking Shriley MacClaine b/c of her beliefs. He would say "Doesn't she believe you come back after death and turn into pencils and stuff?" I was like hello, the majority of things we watch and love have people in them or making them or whatever that reject Jesus. I had to remind him about George Lucas. They do not influence me at all, I feel sorry for their lost souls and pray that they will come to Christ somehow (if I did, anyone can). Hey, a lot of people that we think are Christians may not be. That is not for us to judge.

In a world of rampant eating disorders and having a teenage daughter, I get upset over the images put out by Hollywood. I do live in the real world, however, and I just teach my daughter about air brushing, personal chefs, personal trainers, etc. She knows that most of what we see is not real. We have to remember that these under weight women have as much insecurity as the girls in Jr. High. At the end of the day, my children see with their own eyes what becomes of all these people. We are able to enjoy a good movie without idolizing.

I do have a couple of Beyonce' songs on my iPod, not the dirty ones. It helps me when I get on the eliptical, which I have not done FOREVER. Now you have made me wish I at least watched the Best Actress part b/c of Shirley. I tell ya', she is a great actress. I like to watch her on T of E b/c I act so much like her with my daughter. My son doesn't "force" me to act that way. That is why there are so many movies about mothers and daughters. She is a great reminder for me to try and NOT be like that. I pick at my daughter and she will start slapping me (like when Shirley is adjusting "Emma's" bra straps). Oh my goodness, I do that stuff. I would never tell my daughter she is not special enough, but I would have a fit if she wanted to marry a dufus. I had her at 20, so we
have kind of grown-up together.

Anyway, I don't know how anyone rears children without Jesus.

Again, Melissa, thank you. I will be making A's this week. I still want to teach you some Italian cooking. You may want to wait, we have been one sick bunch around here. I have "wash your hands" signs up everywhere and lecturing about worms in the brain to no avail. Oh well. Have a great week. It's always great to read your posts. You may not like musicals, but you are definitely sassy enough, in a good way, never be apologetic about that (not that you would, that is why we love you so much).

Much love,

Very well written, Melissa. For being so young, you and Amanda have such wise minds and exceptional talents. I know your parents must glow with pride. Your comment has affirmed my 3rd scripture memorization. Heb. 12:1 "Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off all that hinders; and the sin that so easily entangles. Let us run with perseverence the race that is marked out for us". (I did that from memory too !!!) Thanks again.

I so enjoyed watching last night as well. And one of the things that struck me was when the actors and actresses from not so far a distants came out and gave the awards to the new nominees. Just a reminder of keeping your eye on excellence that you will excel at whatever you try to do. The Lord is good to all of us who put His wants and needs for us before our own.

Thanks for sharing your thoughts today. I too love the challenge ...

I wrote in my prayer journal this morning that I wanted to be careful to focus on God's calling for me and not cut corners. Sometimes with 3 little ones (and a big guy) clamoring for my attention, I am ready to fudge here and there. I could use the excuse that I am about to short circuit, and while there is certainly some truth to that, really, it's about priorities.

Melissa--I didn't watch the awards last night, but so appreciated your call to excellence! I especially needed the reminder today when the "brainy" girl in me had to be shoved aside to babysit an 18-month old & make a meatloaf for my husband who's home today! Let me tell you what--juggling the two tasks took some brains & braun! In the world, but not of the world...thanks for your challenge!

This whole striving for excellence thing has been on my mind lately. But rather than watching the Academy Awards - I have been watching football players at the NFL combine. The effort that those guys put forth on every drill and test is truly inspiring - and it really gets me moving!

Thanks for the encouragement today, girl!

That's a good challenge to excel in all that the Lord has called us individually to do - no matter what it is and no matter how small. I appreciate that reminder, Melissa.

Gotta say that I've decided after last night to not watch these award shows anymore. I remember your Mom talking about how she and your Dad were considering joining a gym right after she turned 40, and she said, "No, don't think I will - don't want to go there." I feel exactly the same about these shows - makes me feel things that are not healthy. Honestly, I feel the need for a shower after watching and listening to all that wordly stuff. Wish I were more immune to it, since it can be a lot of fun. But, at this season in my life there are some very tough things I have to accept. And it doesn't help to see all the things I am not. Sure would appreciate your prayers as I journey through this difficult season.

Blessings to you all,

I was starting to feel like just getting the tasks done and not worry about how well they are done. But God has been clear to me about doing things right and for His glory. So, God has definitely spoken to me through this post. I want to pursue doing the things before me with excellence and to His glory. Kim B. in AZ

Point well taken Melissa. I did not watch the oscars, I often joke about how many award shows there are for actors. But maybe if we had award shows for every day folks we would work just a little harder, feel a little more appreciated. If we all go about our days thinking of our great reward, maybe we will accomplish just a little more for Him.
And maybe it is ok to sometimes hold an award show with only two attendants, me and my God.

Oh I love musicals. If I could have danced in one i would have. I use to take jazz, ballet, tap and man i love all that stuff. I love the broadway dancing. Yes, the Oscars are a show case of talent and looks too. I do get caught up in all those gowns, glamour and some of those gorgeous men. Whew! Well, not being married...you know. I think I am a Cinderella girl at heart. But Meryl Streep has so much class a gifted actress and can sing too. I still liked Kate in the Titanic.

You don't have bi-foals! you just have big beautiful eyes that can see a nat from a distant! And, if you do so what. And the last statement you made, "Well done, good and faithful servant...Enter into the joy of your master." The Oscars, don't hold a flicker to it.

Oh, looking for work! Graphic Designer and watercolorist. Prayer would be nice too.

Surprisingly in our marriage it is my husband that is into those shows way way more than me, I think it is because I never watch movies and have no idea who is whom.
But the thought of excellence in all things intrigues me and I would have to say after such a long long winter in the north excellence becomes something you hope to look for in the Spring.
My husband and I are heading for points south this week and I think the thought of excellence has inspired me a month sooner than normal up here in the East Coast of Canada.
We are in Florida for the month of March and after the 11th storm in 9 weeks has just flown past (They called it a Colorado clipper)not before dropping 15 cms. of snow I have to say March's place of resting cannot come fast enough. But in all that I shall do everything on this little break like God Himself is standing there watching me doing it. I know it is a place we are suppose to live all the time, but I think because we are humans simply human. We often forget excellence in all things.
Thanks for the thoughts.

HOLY GHOST BUMPS HERE!

WELL DONE, MELISSA!

YOU ARE A WISE ONE!!!

I, too, just want to please my Master!

And a little side praise that I have to share with all of my Siestas!
God is doing an AMAZING work with the Women of the Word (WOW) Sunday School Class at my church.
He is helping each of us take off the garment of guilt, shame, depression, opression, fear, unworthiness and whatever else it is the enemy likes to dress us in. The FATHER OF GRACE is clothing each of the ladies in His righteousness and they are putting on their garments of praise, love, peace, joy, kindness, etc. Walking the way a daughter of ROYALTY should walk. Shoulders back, head held high, hands out to serve and to give.
Seeing this transformation right before my very eyes has slain me more times than I can count.
What joy! What awe!!
OH PRAISE HIS HOLY NAME!!!

I pray each of you walk as the Princesses that He has made you. You are worthy, Dear Ones, for our Daddy God said so.

Love you and love loving Him with you!!!!
XOOXOXO

I too was really impressed with the presentation of previous winners bestowing words of encouragement in their presentation of the nominees. It made me think of the call on all seasoned Christians (women or men) to speak intentional words of truth, encouragement and blessing to the younger Christian. What would happen if we had a similar setting, maybe a women's banquet, where we had several seasoned women speaking these words on their younger sisters in the faith? What a blessing that would be!

Ok, I didn't watch the Academy Award, so I'll give you that I can't understand the potential impact of some of those moments or speeches, but I'm not on board with this post. I mean this is a group of people who are systematically trying to, and somewhat succeeding at, tearing down our culture and totally bent on redefining marriage. And, yes, we can say they're hard workers -- why not emulate their work ethic? But seriously, can't we find a more worthy group to hold up as an example? I mean, even Satan has a dang good work ethic but I'm not about to give him props :)

Oh this is so great, Melissa! Thank you so much. I was a perfectionist for many, many years. And for me that meant make one little mistake and crawl into the next available pit. I heard a teaching on excellence vs perfectionism, and after that,I made it a goal to do things with excellence rather than be a perfectionist (the teaching said perfectionism was rooted in pride, but excellence was doing your best and doing it as unto the Lord...) I am at a point where I have a couple of big things I'm focusing on, and then there are the small, everyday things. Thank you for the reminder to do the every day things with excellence.

I understand the point about who we hold up for emulation. It's a valid one and one we must give consideration to, particularly when the culture gives us such skewed models. (This is on my mind lately, having just come from Harvard's Veritas Forum where the subject was beauty--in people, in our communities, and in our world.)

But there is something to be admired and acknowledged when we find beautiful things, wherever we find them. Theologians call this common grace. Some of these actors may have personal lives that I wouldn't want to emulate, but they have put portrayals on film that bring to life the joy and heartbreak of being human, and that is beautiful no matter where we find it.

And frankly *I* have a personal life that you should not want to emulate, and that I don't want to emulate myself! I have done things that, if you knew me, would make you not even want to share a cup of coffee with me. And you know what? You'd be missing out, because I am danged fun (and funny) over a cup of coffee.

Let's admire excellence and diligence in the task at hand wherever we find it. If we hold people up to lofty personal standards as a prerequisite to appreciating their work, we're going to have to throw out a lot of the beautiful art, culture, music and science of the last millennia. I, for one, am not willing to give up Langston Hughes' "I, too, sing America/ I am the darker brother...They'll see how beautiful I am and be ashamed/ I, too, am America" just because he was gay and communist and not a believer.

The pyramids are still spectacular though they were built to pagan gods.

The rock art of the San people in South Africa is still stunning though it predates Christianity.

I will continue to be stunned by Meryl Streep's silent scream when she gives up one of her children in "Sophie's Choice", whatever her personal life, as a wrenching portrayal of deeply human moments when all of the choices before us are unthinkable.

Common grace is everywhere, and I need all the grace I can get.

Boy did I need this!!

First of all, I do love an awards show, even if I didn't see any of the movies nominated. I LOVED the 5 women and men that excelled in their work presenting awards to Best Actor/Actress and Supporting Actor/Actress. Their words of encouragement and praise for those following in their footsteps was very heartwarming. I even cried....just a little.

Secondly, I remember telling a woman who is very much my mentor that I thought my work leading a ministry at our church was coming to a close. She asked me where God was directing me to move on to and I had no answer for her. She told me that God will not remove you until He is moving you.

That coupled with this post reminds me that perseverance is something I need to pray for. That being excellent in my work, whether it's for the kindgom or not, is an absolute must.

Thank you for the reminder!!!

Melissa,

It's me again. I'll be gone for a month this summer so I want to get in all my blogging until then (nice excuse).

I just want to say that your post is very appropriate. You took something that so many women watch and envy and drew a parallel to show us that we can achieve excellancy for God's glory whether we are working in the home or outside. This post, I'm sure, showed many women that everything we do is very worthy and that we can do everything for the Glory of God, whether it be heading up a company or mopping the floor.

I'm glad that you addressed this issue head on and did not ignore it or keep it "hushed." You know how many women watch this and you took it and put it in the right perspective. Thank you for being so real and pro-active.

Also, to the OC Siesta, I think what you said is very profound. Sin is sin and as people we tend to separate sin. Homosexuality is a demonic stronghold just like addiction, cussing, whatever it may be. God loves them as much as He loves us. I love to hear testimonies from people who have been delivered from that.

God may not let us have promotions or money that we want for our own good at times. But one thing is for sure and two for certain, He will always deliver us from demonic strongholds, ALWAYS if we seek Him out for it. There is no question about that. There is no maybe or another time. It will come if we seek Him.

I'm sorry about my looong posts. I am not trying to be a blog-hog. I almost refrain from posting sometimes because I know I have to say what's on my mind. I can't just write a little if I'm thinking a lot.

I have always gone to secular universities. One thing professors do is try to discredit the Bible and Jesus. I mean they go out of their way to do that. My hubby always jokes and says "church lady goes to school" b/c I'll keep my mouth shut until that goes on and then I know it is sin for me to stay quiet. Me and some fellow Christians have taken up entire courses speaking truth. I called a PHD down for running his mouth when he does not know diddly about the Bible. I got a B in that class when I should have had an A. That's nothing though.

I go to school armed with Lee Strobel's books and Motorcycle Association Bibles to hand out. My point is that Jesus said we would have to be in the world, but not to be of the world. We are called to be set apart and be a godly example to the lost. I make friends with atheists at school. Usually, after class discussion, they hate me and I am the last person they want to talk to, but I go to them and just talk everyday stuff and get the gospel in there when opportunity arises and God ALWAYS makes it arise, even if they reject Him. I do not fit what they think of as sterotypical Christians. I even have a tattoo from my old days for credibility. We can all be credible with a heart for God, whether we are in jeans or a church dress. It doesn't matter what is on the outside, it only matters what is on the inside and that will always shine through!

I do love to write on this blog because I revel in that fact that proof-reading is discouraged!

Thank you for being transparent enough to admit that there are days when you want to take a nap instead of doing what the Lord has called you to do.

Isn't it reassuring to know that (unlike the actors and actresses at the Oscars, who have no guarantee that they'll ever receive the "prize" for their efforts) we can rest assured knowing that "He who began a good work in us will be faithful to complete it!" (Even on our worst days...) Ok, enough jabber, I'm going to go get BUSY!

Now if the "so-so" ones would stop trying to talk for all of us in the political arena and do their jobs (putting a story together on screen) we would be much better off. Even for those we may not agree with. Let them get paid for a job well done and not for some ranting over politics. And by the way I just love to look at all the fashions--I am such a girl!!

Hello. this is Heidi in fayetteville Georgia. I would love to sign in with one of those cute little blue names with a picture but cannot for the life of me figure out how. So for now, I guess i'll have to be anonymous.

I found the way they presented the awards to best actress/actor very kind and affirming. To be applauded by those who have been honored was a prize in itself for each of those nominated. I couldnt help seeing it as a wonderful thing for us to emulate in the body of Christ. Words of kindness, encouragement and affirmation but not just to a few but each to each other.

How about a blog Melissa of each persons favorite moments in a movie that portrayed God or the Lord Jesus. for example Aragorn in LOTR in the scene where he exhorts them to fight the last battle against evil?

I recently saw a scene that moved me to tears. I watched the movie "Blood Diamond". It has some hard scenes to watch because of how it depicts the horrible slavery in Africa of the boy soldiers. There is one scene where a father Solomon Vandy goes after his son to save him from evil men who are using his son to commit atrocities. His incredible determination - even though he may lose his life - to rescue his son is an incredible picture of God and his love for us. Its powerful and the movie ending is edifying to say the least.

The Lord Jesus is everywhere. Not just in movies but in books too. I'm always open to hearing from others where they have seen him and been blessed by something.

thanks for being so real

Heidi in Fayetteville

I had thoughts this morning of how people would think of me now being a "cleaning lady". Then I thought of my friend Miss Donna who had done it for years and I remembered the great job she did. Then the Lord said to me - ... do it unto me. Do everything you do as unto me. Give me the Glory and all will be well. I had the best time cleaning those floors and taking out the trash and picking up just stuff that people stuff in the pew racks! I talked to Him all morning long. GREAT DAY!! Whatever your hands find to do - do it as unto the Lord and all will be well. God is so GOOD! Thanks for the post - I loved it!! Vicki

It can be so hard to remember that even though our job may never be acknowledged by another and our deed done in quiet may never be known by any other but the Lord Himself, it is still an honor to do it excellently; to reap the reward of knowing that we have taught our children, cleaned our house, loved our husband, taught our bible study, done our job etc. in a way that we can present it as a an offering without spot to the Lord. Thank you for keeping the standard high.

And I KNOW you love your Starbucks...but that is where I work and sometimes the people I serve are NOT NICE! So...I am going to pursue excellence even when they are mean...I promise I will NOT hit the decaf button when they are mean! hahaha! Seriously...LOVED this post!

May we all as daughters of the king take this thought of working hard towards excellence for the Lord! Interesting that we look at the Oscars and Hollywood and are dazzled and amazed by them and their accomplishments. Hmm..I wonder if Almighty God is dazzled and amazed by them as well. I think he is dazzled and amazed at his children humbly obeying Him and being delighted in His Son. May we pray for every one of those five women on stage last night...for their salvation if they don't know Christ as their personal Lord and Savior. Because the truth is...no matter how many Oscars they have on their mantle, no matter how hard they have worked for them, if they died tonight without Christ Jesus, they would have nothing.

Thanks Melissa for the post. You are a wonderful and inspiring young woman of God.

Melissa-
Thanks so much for sharing your heart. I needed a reminder. <--- This coming from a mom of a 15 year old boy who is not behaving well these days. To be quite honest, I've been wondering where this child came from!
God has called me to be the mother of four wonderful children I wouldn't trade for the world! He is my oldest and my first teenager. (There are still many days when I feel like a teenager myself.) I know God has placed within me everything I need to be his mother -- HIMSELF!
I long to be the excellent mother he needs and I pray I can get this flesh out of the way long enough for God to do His work! :o)
Thanks again! {{hugs}}

Hey Melissa: Great post today! I no longer watch TV [except INSP or TBN] thanks to God and your mother. It's that Babylonian mentality thing that she taught about in Daniel and that commitment in Believing God with giving up something for 9 weeks - only it's now going on 2 1/2 years. Just never wanted it back and it's freeing.

Loved your point at the end about excellency. After all, God gave us "His Excellence" - King Jesus!

Isn't our excellence the least we can give back in return?

have been thinking about this certain thing myself lately--excelling at the tasks the Lord has given me. i mean, most days for me are filled with cleaning toilets and changing diapers, but those are Jesus' sweet children i'm watching, so i'll do it with a happy heart. :) thanks for this...love your heart.

Thank you for a very "current" post! You took a pop culture event and turned it into something applicable biblically. The body of work represented by those women is actually amazing. Thank you for not being legalistic and allowing others to enjoy a good film with good acting. A large portion of us watch movies and the women who are in them. We relate to them on an emotional level and with their characters. I love the fact that the idea of that can relate to a biblical teaching and value system. Very approachable and realistic post. Thank you.

I didn't watch the academy awards but am getting what you are saying. I have been doing my fair share of complaining about my current situation, walking around feeling all sorry for myself, and of course, unappreciated at the same time. I was reminded in a book I am currently reading about doing all things unto the Lord. At the moment, I wanted to hurl the book I across the room. Instead I closed the book and logged onto LPM. Here is this post from you speaking that exact message. Guess it's time for me to get off my pity trip and start remembering that it is not all about me. Whew!
What a confrimation. Thank you. Now, let's see how to put this into practice and let it sink like an anchor deep into the nooks and crannies of my spirit.

Melissa, well done. We truly do need to practice excellence. It would be too easy to nap every afternoon (I so enjoy an afternoon nap!) and put aside those things to which God has called us.

I am reminded of 2Peter 1:2-4 which says: "His divine power has granted to us all things that pertain to life and godliness, through the knowledge of him who called us to his own glory and excellence, by which he has granted to us his precious and very great promises, so that through them you may become partakers of the divine nature, having escaped from the corruption that is in the world because of sinful desire."
Let's lead the charge and be "women of excellence among the people of God"!

I loved your post Melissa on being "excellent women". However, I do take issue with Hollywood women being thought of as being excellent. They could have done so much good along the way, however I can't think of one right now that I would put in that "category". They are so morally corrupt I get sick thinking about it and we have so many youth hanging on them. Don't get me wrong, I pray for them. I DO NOT want one of them to spend eternity away from our Savior. BUt they certainly seem bent on heading that way. If we watch these kinds of shows and they get decent ratings won't they continue to put them on. The movies that won (and no I didn't watch them I heard about who won)were outrageous. I certainly would not want an award for what they did.
We need to pray that our youths eyes are so opened to the "opulence" of the world and what it does not give them. I feel like sending them all the Daniel Study.
Sorry I went on for so long, but I needed to respond to that display they put on.
I will strive for "excellence" in my life. My God is a great God!!

And didn't you love that Kate Winslet honored Meryl Streep as she accepted her award stating that she and the other nominees were fortunate just to be in the same category as "Meryl Streep!" who had just broken the Oscar record with 15 nominations. Made me think that we have a kinship with Someone infinitely more excellent than Meryl... and how am I honoring Him with my words today?

At February 24, 2009 at 8:19 AM , Blogger Shannon said...

Beth, I know exactly what you mean. That silent scream still haunts me and it's been years since I even saw the movie! Meryl Streep has said she shot the scene in one take because it was so emotionally exhausting--she had toddlers at the time and it hit too close to home--and has never watched it since!

My mom refuses to watch it, along with "Old Yeller" and "Brian's Song." Her rationale is this: "Look, I know the dog dies in Old Yeller, the kid dies in Brian's Song, and Sophie has to send one of her kids to the gas chambers in Sophie's Choice. There's enough misery in the world I can't avoid but I can avoid those three, and I mean to." And so far, she has been faithful unto that promise.

But I still find it one of those scenes that, without being physically gruesome, brings home the horror of man's inhumanity to man in ways that few other films ever have.

Bobbi, if you're reading: Thank you for being so honest. You put to words what I've been feeling for too long: "I haven't wanted excellence in quite a while, I got preoccupied with enduring. And now that I think about it, it has been rather miserable, this constant dread of needing to complete the next task." Thank you so much for that.

So Melissa, when I first read your post, my thought was that I just didn't have the energy to pursue excellence throughout each day anymore. When it truly "matters" (in my work, in interaction with others, in studying God's Word), of course, - but in things that can slide (eating well, exercising consistently, keeping our house in tip top shape), it's become drudgery and definitely not my best for Christ and His kingdom. I used to pursue excellence in every area of life - but somewhere along the way, over the last few years, I lost that drive.

I didn't think I'd respond to your post based on how I first felt reading your last paragraph, but now, after reading Bobbi's post, I'm ready to be on my knees for this in a completely different way.

I love how God used both of you ladies to move my heart - a great game of Siesta tag team. Just like Paul and Apollos. :)

It was powerful

Unable to be at Bible study with Beth tonight (that hasn't happened in a few years - good thing I can go at 5pm next week) so I thought I'd get a blog fix while stuck home for minor medical reasons! I saw the Academy Awards and enjoy the pagentry but have little desire to have anything to do with that life. However, Melissa, thank you for the reminder of our excellence needed in any field. I also like Twinkle's heavenly image of another award show.

Reading Melissa's original post, I'm reminded of Paul's words to Timothy: "I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith. Now there is in store for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous Judge, will award to me on that day — and not only to me, but also to all who have longed for his appearing." (2 Tim. 4:7-8 NIV) Better a crown in heaven than any little statue that is a weak treasure to store here on earth, even if it's from Hollywood ;-) Now, if I can simply de-clutter from my house/life the too many trinkets I've collected or "earned" over the years. Onward, to excellence!

I love your comment on Katie with being composed in the movie an on the stage she was giggly girl! I often have thought that about women on TV. The women on TV can keep her house clean, kids clean, kids behaved, go to work, sit with kids for hours and have a five course meal made for her family and still go to be at a reasonable time. It is impossiable. I have tried it. Do not get me wrong. I feed my kids, I spend time with my kids, I cook meals, I clean. I als often reflect to Beth's comment about her "supperman" I have a supperman. He will cook when I am working late! But the only person I can be is me! Those women protray a falsehood!

I just read Melissa from CA's comment and totally agreed. Although I appreciate the encouragement to be women of excellence no matter what we do, I'm not necessarily on board with the example of Hollywood. There are so many more worthy examples we can emulate instead of a self-gratifying, self-glorifying world such as the entertainment industry. Let's not forget that we can be fed the Enemy's lies in all different forms, but do we recognize the lies when they are packaged up from glossy, well-dressed, eloquent, designer-clad celebrities???

Ms. Wheaton,

I was happy for Kate too; I was afraid she was fix'n to be the Susan Lucie of the movies. The Reader devestated me for a week, then it actually inspired me to write a little something on pride, love, and foolishness a few months ago. Best performance was Anne though; she has become something special, a revalatory performance. But then, Demme has an eye for matching actors to the vehicle; the academy knows that so it hurt her shot... she might have to wait like Kate though to get the award, more often than not it is about a body of work. Keep playing the keyboard!

One of the coolest things I find about God is how He set "it" up so that we can all be truly satisfied in our callings whether it's singing for Him like Michael Duhbya Smith does with excellence or simply by serving Him with the same excellence in youth group at the church He chose for us (I used to think that it would have been better to have had a calling that included the cool singing gene). But we all have equal opportunity to experience the Spirit-led satisfied life which is clearly the only way to be genuinely satisfied. Sadly, winning an Oscar apart from a relationship with Jesus Christ will still leave one empty. Our hard work in this life and for the kingdom will reap eternal rewards. And through Christ, we can abound in every good work!(mem verse-week 2)Great inspirational post, Melissa!

I don't think I saw any of the movies that were nominated (I'm not a movie person anyway) but I understand it takes a lot of hard work to get to that level, and I want to work just as hard at what I do, even if it's not paying right now.

That said, if someone wants to drape me in diamonds and give me Pretty Clothes, by all means COME TO TEXAS - I will not turn you away. I promise.

Melissa,

I'v thought the same thing for numerous years about actors/actresses. This year I was given one big awakening. I was in Hollywood with my 15 year old daughter who began performing several years ago but felt God's calling into acting 8 months ago. It's been amazing the doors he has opened for her since last July but she is still no place near the award shows. The neat thing is she see's this as her "mission field." To her God wants her in there letting people see him through her. I know the dangers of what can happen but I have to admit I saw some amazing things happen out there during the time we spent. It was also neat from a mom's point of view to see her praying while getting to stand on the red carpet the night before all the stars were walking on it.

I agree wholeheartedly!! I am a musician/actor in the DFW area and I ALWAYS watch the awards shows. In one of my acting classes it was stated that Anthony HOpkins reads his scripts at least 200 times, so that he knows the story inside and out. It dawned on me while I was reading your post, what if we read our"script for living" God's Word in excess of 200 times so that we know that story inside and out!! Thank you for your encouraging words.
