One Reason Why

Happy Lord's Day, You Delightful Siestas! The only reason I'm getting to be on here at this hour on a Sunday morning is because Curtis is preaching at the 6:30 PM "Ascend" service at our church this evening so, needless to say, I'm going then. I've had you on my mind, praying for you and cheering for you so much over the last week. At this point, do you realize we have about 3000 of us memorizing Scripture together? Unbelievable. This morning while I was working out in my garage, I had on one of my Nicole C. Mullen CD's. (You know, she and I are really tight. I'm her personal trainer. Which, of course, is a lie and some of you are too new to the blog to recognize when I'm making something up. Have you seen that woman's arms? That's why I pump iron.) Anyway, I was getting my praise on to her song "Brainwash" and as I listened to the lyrics, I thought how my Scripture-memorizing Siestas would be pumped up in their commitment by it. Here are the words but if you love her kind of music like I do, google it and listen to it. Here, Darling Things, is one great reason why we memorize Scripture. In a few days I'm planning to do a little mini-tutorial but this is perfect until then. Sure love you!

Chorus: I need a brainwash from my head to my soul ~
I need a brainwash, bring it down to my toes ~
I need a brainwash in and out 'cause you know ~
I need a B-R-A-I-N double wash*

Overwhelmed by the stuff on TV ~
Overloaded from the pressure fallin' on me ~
light head! Oxygen! I've gotta breath *
Email, Myspace, backin' up all the time ~
Voicemail, press one if you're on the line ~
Transformer, can you renew my mind?

Smack dab in the front of my mind ~
All that I've done wrong ~ Re-play and rewind ~
How can I erase it forever this time *
Smack dab in the pit of my soul ~
This guilty feeling's diggin' a hole ~
And my thoughts are spinnin' out of control

The world is straight typical to rock the traditional ~
Kinda keep it real life livin' mind simple though ~
My past is in remission ~ Thrivin' on my conditions ~
I need a turn around ~ A fresh way to get down ~
Comin' straight from Jersey roamin' in the land of the dirty south, free ~
Escapin' misery ~ With a Christ mentality ~ The only way to have it ~
Living word habits ~ Feels nice dippin' me twice ~
Yo, ah I need a Brainwash... (Chorus)

Be not conformed to this world ~ But be transformed by the renewing of your mind

Just wanted you to know that your memorization blog has really inspired me to no longer talk about my relationship with Christ but to actually have one...

I posted your idea on my blog and 8 of my girlfriends have joined me - all promising to help and hold each other accountable to see this through...

Thank you so much for your ministry.

Much love from this Houston girl stuck in California...

Beth,
Recently I was chatting with our church's prayer coordinator. We are having a special time of fasting and prayer at the end of January. During that time, along with concerts of prayer, there will be displays by people who are finding create ways to become stronger in their faith. I mentioned to her that I was taking your challenge of memorizing the Word. She asked me to put that idea together for a display to invite others from our church to do the same thing.

Last night after church, I was talking with a woman who had been in one of my classes previously. In conversation, I mentioned what I was doing with the memorization stuff. She was so excited and asked me to come to her small group to explain what I was doing.

I'm getting the idea that people I know are hungry for the Word and willing to take the challenge of committing it to memory!

Great year ahead!

I think it's funny you explained why you were blogging instead of going to church! I can just hear the talk, if you hadn't done that..."Can you believe it, Bertha? That Beth Moore lady who does all the Bible studies wasn't even in church this morning. That's RIGHT! Well, mercy sakes!"
Thank you for the Brainwash post. Last night, I was trying to read a little before I went to sleep and my memory verse kept bouncing around my head. I could NOT shut it off! Finally, I just threw the covers up and said, "Alright, Jesus, I'm yours! Bring it on!" And we went together through Habakkuk 3:17&18 again and again. I got a brainwashing.
Most of my friends would probably tell you that my brain is so scattered that it took Jesus some running around with the toilet brush, but He does a great job.
Thank you for the challenge, thank you for the words of encouragement!

I am home from church due to sick kids. Thanks for the song lyrics - my prayer exactly!

I also wanted to comment on what you said a few days ago about being hurt so bad during the holidays. I was in the exact same situation and it was a betrayal I felt by family members. I didn't know how I could possibly spend the holidays with the very people that were doing things behind my back. But, through repeatedly running to God every time I hurt He healed my heart so that I could spend the holidays with the family and not feel bitterness. I probably don't trust like before... but honestly I don't feel any resentment!! ONLY A GOD THING!!

How perfect. I so want and need a brainwash. Thanks for sharing. I am so excited about memorizing scripture with everyone. I had great devotional time this morning (a rare thing lately I am ashamed to say) and then my pastor used the same scriptures and it all tied in with my verse--I am sure it only makes sense to me how it goes together, but isn't God so good to make it all fit? Thank you for your encouragement and the opportunity for this blog fellowship.

Beth,
I am brainwashing myself with the scripture memorization and my 12 year old precious daughter is doing it too! On our way home from church this morning where we heard an incredible message on a 2009 with No Regrets - she said,"Momma do you ever get so excited about Jesus coming back you can't stand it?" Hallellujah!!!! She is a mini-Siesta! The pastor said that as Christians we should be like Paul when he left Ephesus - No Reserve, No Retreat, and No Regrets. He said that the world sees a bleak outlook for 2009 but as Christians we should be excited. Then he said, and I almost burst off my pew - that we should live out 2009 with the thought that our generation might be the last voices the lost world hears! I thought about 3000 Siestas memorizing scripture and thought we are gonna be dangerous! Have a blessed Lord's day. (By the way I get on with my Nicole Mullen jams too)

I'm familiar with Nicole C. Mullen's music (love her) but don't think I've ever heard this particular song. I'm going to have to check it out!

BTW, Romans 12:1-2 is my scripture memory verse. God led me to this verse about a week ago and since then has shown it to me over and over again through a variety of different sources. Your post today was no exception. Amazing! I was having trouble memorizing Romans 12:1-2 at first, then in my sleep one night, the verse came to me with such clarity, I was able to repeat it word for word -- Glory to God!

I need a brainwash; washed with God's Holy Word. I pray that my mind will be transformed and renewed in all things Jesus!

Thank you for doing this, Beth!

I am really, really looking forward to the post with tips for the memorization. I really have trouble with memorization of anything and got so frustrated yesterday while working on my scripture. And it isn't even long! I know I can meditate on it, but I really, really want to memorize it. It makes me sad that I wanted to give up before we've really gotten started.

One thing I have been doing for almost a year now is putting three pages of who I am in Christ up in my shower. I typed them up, along with the scripture references for each, got them laminated and attached 'em to the shower wall with velcro. I spend a lot of time in that shower, saying those scriptures over myself. In fact, it isn't uncommon to find me standing in the shower fully dressed just reading my list out loud, many times with tears streaming down my face.

Amy Beth, the enemy's messing with you. As young as you are, you definitely can memorize. Don't be sad. From now on rejoice and keep thanking God out loud for giving you a mind to memorize and, as Romans 4 says, call things that aren't as though they are. Then keep it up and you'll have it. In the mean time, you'll have a steadfast mind. Thanks for looking forward to the tips. I am going back and forth between doing a really rough cut like I usually do for the Siestas or doing better quality which would take a few more days. Maybe I better just go with rough so I can post it sooner. I'll pray that through. I love you guys so much. You've become a big part of my life.

I never cease to be blown away by what happens when one person follows Gods leading, steps out in faith and see how God blesses the effort. This might have looked like a couple of hundred women signing up to learn memory verses. Now I am reading how it is spreading to other groups, large and small. What is Satan going to do with Gods words being repeated day after day, from thousands of people for a YEAR! Think he can cover his ears that long? Its driving him crazy I just know it! Keep your eyes on the Lord and speak away any attempt of the evil ones attack on you because he IS going to retaliate!

I like to read books from Laurie Beth Jones and she says when negative or fear-based thoughts come into her head, she has a word ready to wipe it away. Her word is "Beloved" which she repeats until she reconnects with God and to reassure herself that even though she thought it, she doesn't have to give weight to it.

So prepare yourself right now for his attacks so that he doesn't one time get a foothold to distract us from achieving this giant step the Siestas of God are making toward being Brainwashed for Him.

I think my word will be Master....

About the cute scripture cards. White is fine for the index cards. Then get some color pens to write your scripture on the white card and add some stickers to the card for decoration. I use some glitter fairies, Marjolein Bastin stickers, bird stickers, Christian stickers (crosses), etc., that I have on hand. You can actually treat each white card like a scrapbook page and use some pretty scrapbook paper to change the look of the card and then decoratively add your scripture to the page. Let your mind go WILD with this because it will help you to memorize! I like to use the bird stickers for verses about singing praises to God. And the fairy stickers are perfect for reminding me of God's Promise that I will be like Him. He has WINGS!

Amy Beth, I know Beth will share more memorization tips but it really helps to write the verses over and over. And write a prayer in the front of your spiral set asking God to let the Holy Spirit write these scriptures on the tablet of your heart and mind. I have the same problems you have and I know these help me!

Amy Beth, I got a vision of you standing in the shower with your clothes on and made me laugh. I am older and memorizing seems impossible for me. No matter how hard I try. I want so badly to be able to speak the Word in appropriate situations and while I know that God gives you the words when you need it, the exact scripture NEVER comes into my foggy brain.

I can only pray God is in control of what is coming out of my mouth and blesses the results. AND keep on trying!

This is a blog that will be forwarded on - as we were just talking about this late last night!

I was checking back to reread some scriptures on the scripture blog - that I really loved but didn't write down! (It was a life-saver as I sat in a lonely hotel room after dropping off my first-born back to college - knowing that she wouldn't be home again but for a few days at a time due to job/career now - they tell the first one is the hardest!)

Anyway, I think I will work on a few more scriptures - along with mine! BTW - my middle one, the one recovering from encephelitus, didn't sign up cause she didn't think she could memorize two a month but has three the Lord gave her she is trying memorize for this year. I told her not to feel bad, that the Lord knows that and He counts her in!

Beth, thank you again - for hearing the Lord and sharing this with us!

Beth, the scripture memorization is exactly what I've needed for a long time. I started with an easy one, one that I already kinda knew. Romans 8:1-2 Mainly because I struggle with the whole "condemnation" thing in my life. Too long and too detailed to go into here, but would love an extra prayer or two. I struggle all the time with feeling and accepting the fact that God loves me. And I thought, once I reached 50 I'd be wiser ---- Joke was on me!!! :-)
Thanks Beth, for all you do.

No wonder Nicole has arms like that with the number of people she works out with! Where does she find the time?

One thing you could address about memorizing is how to keep the scripture addresses straight in your head. I know a lot of scripture but can't always remember where they are. I was trying to remember 2 Chronicles 7:14 and ended up with 2 Corinthians 10:3.

What's up with that?
Ah the battle of the middle age brain continues.

Thanks Beth for your comment to Amy Beth! I believe if we can type, we can memorize scripture. The 'agreements' we make with our minds can truly be deceiving. Those comments that declare 'I can't'! How many songs, addresses, phone numbers, dates, keyboards, names, etc. do we know? It takes memory to do that! I remember an old book, that became a movie way back when, "Fahrenheit 451," (the temperature books burn at), a fictional adaptation how books where banned in our world! People would take on memorizing whole books, yes, the Bible was one of them, cuz otherwize they would be lost forever. I wonder if maybe we ought to think that way more, especially as the kingdom calendar comes closer to the end?

I am on prednizone for my Crohns disease which caused my blood glucose levels to go crazy. I have to take 4 shots of insulin a day. I really need to memorize some scripture but I can barely remember my own name right now. I am trying to stay in the Word. I am doing your 90 days with David. I want to do so many things, but my body won't let me. I hope the Lord understands.

Thanks for your prayers.

One of the most helpful ways for me to memorize verses is to ask the Holy Spirit to apply it to several situations in my life during the day. I keep my 3x5 cards with me so the Living Word can hop from the card to the situation. For instance, I'm memorizing Lk 1:28-38 (the angel visiting Mary) and part of the passage talks about fear. Since God is determined to rid me of fear because I have so much of it, He allows my insecurity to intensify so He can heal it. Then He does exactly what I asked Him to do according to John 14:25, He brings to my memory the words that He has spoken to me.

For example, today He asked me to be a part of a ministry in my church I'm afraid to fail in. I heard Him speak vs 1:30 "Do not be afraid, Mary, for you have found favor with God." Translation: Do the thing, I've got your back.

Yesterday I was struggling with overeating sweets (I've totally overindulged during the holiday and needed a sugarfree day). During a difficult time of temptation I moaned to God, I CAN'T SAY NO! I grabbed my cards, and read 1:35 "The Holy Spirit will come upon you and the power of the Most High will overshadow you..." I cried out for the HS to do just that. AND HE DID!

Don't give up. KEEP GOING. If my 48 year old Siesta brain can do it, you can too. "For nothing is impossible with God." Lk 1:37

Beth,

This morning I was asking my little darling 2nd grade class why we read God's Word and why we memorize Bible "treasures" -- not just verses -- but "treasures." One little girl said, "Because it is special." Then one little precious african american boy raised his hand -- hadn't been to Sunday School in a LONG time -- but he GOT IT. He said, "Because it is precious!"

Wow!! It is precious, isn't it?? It is life-changin', soul-savin', mood alterin', anger managin', power fillin', ever lovin' PRECIOUS!!!!

Thanks for the challenge and being our head cheerleader!!!

READY? OKAY!

Love,

I, too, need a brainwashing from my head to my toes!! What a perfect time for this--I've stopped making New Year's resolutions b/c I never get passed the first week! Except this year I'll be memorizing me some scripture and be accountable to my Siestas. Thank you, Beth for giving us this forum to communicate and delve deeper into God's Word.

Our son's wedding was Friday evening with so many of our family traveling from the Houston area to Colorado Springs and friends from all over the country to witness God's blessing on our son and his wife. They had a civil ceremony prior to his deployment last Fall but wanted a church wedding to make it perfect. He told us his marriage wouldn't be complete until God was with them and witnessed by family and friends! It was a God-filled evening that I will never forget--thanks to you and all of the Siestas that have encouraged me to stay in His Word.
You're a true blessing in my life, being open and sharing your "realness" with us.

Thank you, thank you from the bottom of my heart.

Love & blessings,
Bobbie

I didn't go to church this morning either. Hope to go this evening. Could you pray for my husband and I? We are having health issues at the same time. He is having surgery on Tuesday to remove a kidney stone. (that is why we didn't make it to church-he was in pain) I have been diagnosed with Crohns disease and am on prednizone. I am a diabetic and now have to take 4 shots a day because of the prednizone. I am feeling very overwhelmed! Kind of like the song.

By the way we love Nicole in the hood.

Beth, Thanks for the opportunity to consider that I have received a Christ purchased gift certificate for a "Brainwash". I want a complete "detailing" with a scrub, soak, rinse, polish and dried leaving no unslightly spots! Brainwash me and all those I love, dear Lord! Brainwash us!!! I've certainly tried to do it myself and it can't be done unless you do it for me dear Jesus. There are just parts we can't reach when we try to do it through our own strength. I go to church at 6pm on Sundays and I do love a Sunday evening service and Eucharist- You ARE our personal coach, despite there are 3000 of us- I love how God can make what should be impersonal and impossible such a divine opportunity and filled with love. Blessings dear sister in Christ and your son in law's service tonight-

I have my verse memorized - YAY - and so I keep saying it over and over in my mind, and praying it, and meditating on it. I'm also going to start reading it in different versions and last night I read most of Phil 1, so that I had the whole context. This is going to be AWESOME ~ what the LORD is going to DO is going to be awesome!!

Amy Beth ~ I do the shower thing, too!!! While I was doing Believing God on my own, I typed up a bunch on scriptures that I turned into prayers for my husband, children, and myself.. slipped them into plastic sleeves and taped them in the shower. That's usually where I do my thinking (and it can turn negative quickly!), so now my husband and I have scripture prayers to read aloud instead. He has thanked me a few different times for doing that. I've also added some to my kids' shower recently! This was inspired by the subject of speaking blessings in the BG study.. and I'm still in awe of the knowledge that my precious Father actually speaks out blessings over my life..

Blessings to all of you!
Linda

You have no idea how so very happy my soul is to have found this blog....I am doing your 'Daniel' series right now, and I feel so alive, like God is showing me the path back to him - the light in the darkness.
I'm not sure what I expected when I found this blog, but I guess I didn't expect such a sweet and connected network of people, and I am so humbled by your humbleness.
For whatever reason, I guess I did not expect you to be so normal, so real, so like us....making cookies, scooping up #2's, answering quizzes, sending birthday wishes to your beautiful daughters...and sharing it! I'm sure you've been told this before, but your honesty and your approach to life is so awesome and genuine, and I am longing for that within my own relationships now that God has been invited back in to them :-)
I thank God that I have found this little place, and I thank God for using you the way He does, and I thank you for listening to His voice. He is pleased, and He is smiling on you :-)

Our Church's Theme for this year is Big Love, we have a cross a sweet hubby of a wonderful women in our church made. On the cross(Beautiful wood and steel, engraved, stunning really) we have taken the name of some one we will commit to pray for this year 2009 in hope we are praying some people we love into the kingdom, The sign up sheet went around for 3 Sundays and we were to if led to sign our name to the date our birthday was. Every month on that date we have agreed to fast from a meal or two and pray for the people who 's names are on the cross. Now there are several hundred so to actually name each one would be a challenge but the idea is we are praying for the people who others are praying for salvation for. It is a wonderful way we have A) a visual reminder we are to be active in prayer and B)finding different ways to connect with the many many people in our fellowship.
We hope to start the Esther study this month. Meanwhile we have several ladies groups meeting weekly and funny how every group meets the needs of the ladies attending it but they are all so very different.
I am blessed to be able to oversee these ladies groups and work with such amazing women who's desire like mine is to see every woman grow into the woman God intended them to be, and many of us didn't realize what that was going to look like or require from us to reach that place. It is an amazing ride.
I am hoping that perhaps if any of you Siesta's is Blog land have it laid on your hearts to pray for us in the East Coast of Canada if you could lift us up in this years prayer, could you, would you go ahead and do it, we would be honored.
Luv and Thanks

The encouragement here is what will keep me on task. I have my Bible open on a book rack beside me all day - as I'm doing quite a bit of writing. So, my index card sits in the passage open for the day. As I go through the day, I work on it over and over. There's one phrase in the passage that keeps getting moved to other places and that just messes me up! *giggle* I'm going to have to work out a mnemonic so that it will stay where it belongs.

Bless you for this encouraging way to do what you've asked us to do for years and what we've been desperate to do well. A full year of this? I'm so looking forward to it.

Can I just say how much I love the Lord and the way He speaks to me! Amen to this post! Amen to Nicole C Mullen! Amen to the words of this song! I've been feeling like I needed a cleansing of sorts...wondering if it was time for another fast? This posting has led me to believe that possibly a "brain-fast" or in this case, Brainwash, is what I need instead. Maybe this will not just be my usual fast involving the limitation or removal of food, but a fasting of those things that take me away from the Lord and His Word...especially, as I am memorizing that Beautiful Word of His with my Siestas. Isn't it just the sweetest thing that when you faithfully, expectantly, and excitedly dabble into the Word just a little bit - He leaves us hungering and thirsting for more? Well, I'm going to have wash that brain of mine in order to absorb all that He wants to feed right me now. I feel a flood coming on...God Bless You Beth and your faithfulness to Him!

Smack dab in the front of my mind...
smack dab in the pit of my soul...

And how I have learned when I start feeling like this to immediately cry, call out to God and get Him smack dab in the middle, on top, everywhere!!!

I love scripture, but my problem with memorizing verses is that I get excited when I see a verse I want to learn and write it on a card or piece of scrap paper, or back of an envelope or journal and then I have verses everywhere with no real organization to them and I think only a miracle that I have any memorized at all.

So I am excited about truly committing to two verses a month...no matter what..!!

I have been reading, re-reading, and meditating on several passages of Scripture this past month for strength and wisdom to walk through some very difficult things. This weekend I had a rare chance to visit with my BFF and so wanted to share what God was teaching me in it all through His Word - yet as familiar as the verses were, I couldn't quote even ONE of those passages word for word! It fanned the flame even more to commit God's Word to memory. I'm excited to do it!

Just this morning our pastor, John Piper, gave a phenomenal sermon on why it's so important to memorize Scripture. My heart pounded the entire time. If it's okay to post, I think the Siestas who are committed to memorizing Scripture this year would be greatly encouraged by Pastor John's words. The sermon should be available Monday on www.desiringgod.org. If you can, listen to the audio of the January 4, 2009 sermon, but a transcript should be available as well.

Much love to all of you ladies!

yes, girl has ARMS most men wouldn't dare challenge.

two things i remember about ms nicole.
1) her muscles.
2) (at a conference) hearing her speak almost an entire chapter from the book of Romans (from memory) during an instrumental break in one of her songs. i believe she is well-qualified to have a guest appearance through songs lyrics in this new season of blog accountability!!! :)

don't know if this helps (i have trouble remembering things that i read as well), but i keep an expo (white board) marker in my bathroom and write scriptures and lyrics on my mirror so that is the first thing i see in the morning. (wipes off with a paper towel and water! windex works too ;) ) it is see-through too so if you have a LOT that you need to write on your mirror, you can still see yourself through the words (and it's probably better to look at ourselves THROUGH God's word anyways, right?!)

(also i love to write scripture references on my wrist. sometimes i get mistaken for having a tatoo, but it's an easy place to glance down at if you need a reminder, and depending on how large you write, most people never even know it's there.)

Hi Siestas, I'm so happy to be included in this now! Thanks Beth for the brainwash...much needed here... I wanted to share something "so God" with y'all...I love it it makes sense to me, hope it does to you)! My dear friend who is a "new siesta", too, and I were chatting about the scripture memorization the other day. I told her that in Feb, when our spring study starts, we'll be doing Jesus the One and Only. I just finished doing Breaking Free on my own last night. My family and I are struggling with parenting and poor choices we've made which have effected our kids, 10 and almost 6 yrs. old. We are trying each day to surrender to God and allow Him to parent thru us, heal the hurts we've caused and have in our own lives and make this a year of transformation, restoration and new beginnings for our kids and us. When my friend and I talked about what God has done for me thru Breaking Free, the scripture memorization and starting Jesus the One and Only, she said to me, "You're gonna have you a Jesus year!!!" and that comment shot thru me bc it's true! God is coming thru for me and my family, He has orchestrated so beautifully all these things in my life, the BF study, the scripture study, starting the new Jesus one and Only study. He knows I need, my family needs, to have a Jesus year, and in His name and thru His power, yes, yes and amen...I'm havin' me a Jesus year and I'm so excited about it I can't sit still! I know that bc of this the devil is gonna try his hardest to bring all that hurt and defeat I just worked thru right back in my life to keep me and my family from the plans our Daddy has for us. If you think of us and God brings us to mind, please pray for us...we need all of Him to have these changes stick and to live in victory..no more defeat! I am so excited to be a part of this siestahood with you all...your comments so encourage and up lift me..thank you Beth for seeing that we all need each other and making this blog possible!
Resting in my Jesus,

Oh, that is cool!

My personal theme for my year of Scripture memorization is FREEDOM. Boy, when Jesus works, He works!!Just yesterday I went on a run with my Kirk Franklin on, listening to "Imagine Me".

It finally hit me. I AM free. Free from a long standing bondage that has literally crippled my walk with the Lord. All this time, I've been free but holding on to an empty yoke. Yep, right there in my right hand, a big fat lie. Imagine me, being free!

Boy, it's only January 4th and my first Scripture has already done wonders for me!(I picked Galatians 5:1) I can't wait to see what happens next!! whup whup!

"Brainwashed from my head to my toes"...

No wonder you were using this as you worked out...foot stompin', blood pumpin' music...love it.

Memorizing a verse or two works for a week or two, then generally I can only recall the basic message or words but lose the location and the exact words. I so want to recall the verse, the location and be able to bring it to mind at just the right time. Those times when I need to be washed in the Word, or when someone else needs a word.

A goal I've had for awhile is to have better command of the Word to witness to unbelievers and in particular to be able to intelligently and passionately present the Word.

It is so embarrassing to KNOW a precept, principal, or instruction in my heart but NOT be able to support it spontaneously with the Word. I feel so inadequate and sometimes like a fraud to so passionately believe and know the truth in my heart and not have the skills to support it. To not be able to defend the love of my life~~Jesus~~just plain hurts.

Please include any suggestions you may have to improve retaining the verses and recalling them.

When I read the comments to today's posting, I was relieved to see that it is not too late to commit to memorizing Scripture with the group. This is something I really NEED to do (I know - you said we should "want" to, not just "need" to - but I REEEAAALLY need to).
So much of the time, my heart is empty and lonely, and I fear that God is not interested in me (other than when I mess up). Is it really possible to have a relationship with the Lord that is joyful and peaceful and comforting? So many times, I have made a commitment to "live for the Lord," but within a couple of weeks (or sometimes days), I give up because I can't get it "right" - I can't dot my i's and cross my t's the way I should (yes, as a matter of fact, I DO have OCD!) I figure that, by now, the Lord has written me off as a total loser - and that makes me very sad.
All that to say - I NEED to join the memorization group! So, my first Scripture will be Isaiah 12:1 NAS "Then you will say on that day, 'I will give thanks to You, O Lord; for although You were angry with me, Your anger is turned away, and You comfort me.'"

It has spread to her brain and I wonder just how long she will recognize us. She is very confused at times and doesn't know where she is. Seeing her like this makes me want even more to be filled with the Word so if I am ever in the same situation my mind will be so saturated with the Word that there won't be room for anything else. Mom loves the Lord very much! I know she's still in bondage to some things...I wish she would've gotten free before this happened. I know the Lord will deliver her in the end. Sorry for rambling...just wanted to share how much this means to me and why.

Hello Beth and Siestas! I know I've mentioned my "dissatisfaction" with Minnesota and the weather while we've been visiting here sometimes, okay, I've complained! And I don't usually write overly long posts, but can I tell you about one of the major highlights of being here? Being able to go to John Piper's Bethlehem Baptist church! His sermons have been life changing for me the past couple of months. He's going through the book of John right now verse by verse.

Can you guess what he preached on today? I know you can! John 15:1-7 about His word abiding in us! He started off the sermon with probably 10 minutes straight of just passionately reciting long passages of scripture he had memorized over his 62 years of life- all of Psalms 1,16,103, Romans 5 & 8 and finally 1 Cor. 13. I am telling you, it was beautiful and powerful and inspirational beyond words. We were all just so moved by the power of the scripture and how much Piper obviously loves the word with his whole heart.

He then went on to give his personal testimony of 8 benefits of memorizing scripture in his own life and then from the text in John he spoke of the Bible's stated benefits of memorizing scripture. It was amazing ladies, one of the best sermons ever, esp. considering what we're all trying to do.

At desiringgod.org you can hear and/or read his past sermons. I encourage you to scan through it or listen if you have time. I think it's posted by tomorrow, but it may be there today- I'm not sure. You will be so motivated to get God's word in your heart you won't be able to stand it!

Last week's message about prayer called "Put in the fire for the sake of prayer" using verses in John and amazing verses in Zechariah 13: 8 & 9 as his texts was just about the best I'd heard on the subject of prayer. If you have time, scan that one as well. It's already changed how I've prayed this week.

Anyway, I need to stop murmuring about my flat, dry hair, cold toes and nose and embrace what God has been able to teach me not only though my time here in general, but specifically though the preaching I've been able to sit under. What a blessing! I just love it when God reinforces a message over and over again and I'm hearing this call to memorization loud and clear today! Thank you, Lord.

Beth,

I, too, am looking forward to the 'tips'...I have really been working on my verses. Everytime I am thinking about anything 'off subject', the Lord brings my verses (James 3:16-17) to mind!

I am so thankful to have this accountability...it seems silly, but just knowing you are doing it (and 3000 others sisters) makes me persevere! I will need those tips by March, though, so BRING THEM ON, girl! :)

hugs to you, thank you for caring enough to disciple us from a distance! :)

Love that song and Nicole C Mullen! Definately the truth. And can I just say... I know that this is just the first verse, but I was kinda sceptical at first as to whether or not I would actually be able to do this memorization thing. And you know, I have been surprised with myself. I'm actually getting it!!! I almost have my first verse all memorized (it's kinda lengthy) and it's only been a few days. I can't wait to see all the Lord has in store for the coming year with Him. Thank you Beth & Siestas for the accountability. I feel honored to be apart of something so HUGE our Father is doing.

I am so grateful for what God's already doing in me through this. We had a leadership retreat this weekend and the verse I've memorized was SO APPLICABLE for us!!! "Such confidence as this is OURS (MINE!!!) through Christ before God!..." That HE HAS MADE US (ME!) COMPETENT as ministers!!! Oh How I need to remember that when the enemy tries to tell me otherwise! And I'm going to! Got my Sword and my Shield and I'm ready... Thanks, Mama Beth!!! (Now if I can only find 3000 siestas to exercise with...) : )

Thank you so much, Beth for the additional opportunity to build on my relationship with my Lord. I am almost finished with week 6 of Believing God and I am jazzed to continue spreading the words of the pledge of faith to my family and friends. I hope you get a chance to read the latest wave of community posts on that site as you strive to build on this memorization blog. Now each verse I come across gets a double take and asked if that will be one of my 24. It is exciting to see where God leads me on this adventure. Love you too Beth. Hope you come back to Alaska soon so I can meet you and give you big ol hug from my West Virginian rooted heart.

I want to believe that I can have this kind of life change. I am in a pit. I don't want to be here anymore and I just want God to deliver me and cooperate with Him in the process. I am so very tired - I mean a bone weary tiredness that makes me think I have no fight left in me. I know that if God can deliver you, He can deliver me. I want out...Please pray for those of us who wonder if anything will ever change.

I've never heard that song but I have said on more than one occasion that I felt like my brain needed a good "pressure-washing" to get all those dark, icky spots off that were embedded in my brain.

Yeah, it's kinda like that.

Beth - I love it that you explained why you were blogging during "church hours." I've been known to avoid every appearance of emailing - especially my ministry team who for some reason I think might really notice and care - between the hours of 9:00-noon while staying home with a sick child on Sunday. Is that legalistic or just plain pitiful?! :)

Love the brainwash image! My son and I had a lengthy discussion along those lines on our way home from church today. God is maturing him so much lately!

I have been out of church for several months, giving the enemy way too much room to work in my life, when the challenge came to memorize the Word, the timing was of course God!!! This morning my family returned to church, and so God, I walked into small group and what scripture were we discussing...oh yeah siesta, the very passage I chose to memorize Phil. 3:7-11! I just couldn't stop the tears or the praise! God you are awesome and thank you for using Beth in such a mighty way!

Also, if you get dibs on claiming to be Nicole's trainer, I get dibs on claiming to be her muse. Such as a life as mine - before Christ would raise up country music lyrics with lots of *&^%$. Life after Christ would definitely inspire some awesome Gospel from our BFF, Nicole!

Beth, The coolest thing happened at church this morning. A friend joining me for the 1st and 15th Team grabbed me and we repeated our verses to each other. I got tongue-tied when she asked me to quote my verse right in the throes of the chaos of dismissal of our new children's worship(Club Rock). I had to take a breath and ask the Lord to bring it to mind. Oh, how he did. This is great. Thank you for the idea and inspiration.

My child (3) has been memorizing scripture and she is going around asking people what their verses are? It is so embarrassing because she is putting people on the spot and I am like Just tell her Jesus wept. Anyway, I just sing them to her for whatever every day life thing we are doing and I can't believe how she is getting it. Long story short she is using her sword to get out of trouble. Anytime I say Morgan you are going to be in big trouble she is like Momma, children obey your parents in the Lord for this is right. I not want to go to trouble. She even burst out into prayer and at the end tells me what God says...He usually tells her Mo (no), I not have to go to trouble when I get home. lol. I am now trying to teach her not just to know it but to do it. It cracks me up because I am like oh yay she just quoted a scripture...I need some work on my parenting skills!! LOL

I can't wait to read your tutorial.

One thing that has helped me memorize scripture is typing from memory at least once a day. I then compare this to the actual text. Errors are highlighted and they become the focal point of correction and memorization.
The process continues until the passage is in my head.

Whatever the method, the important thing is to hide God's word in our hearts.

Hugs,
Mary

Beth, I felt like I needed to jump on here tonight to let you know what is going on in our church tomorrow.

Tomorrow night, we begin your study of Esther!!

I cannot begin to put into words my excitement over this study. The Lord used this wonderful book of His word to transform my life three years ago when I taught to my SS class of high school girls. Now, I am looking for another transformation and believing God for a WORD from Him over the next 10 weeks through you.

You must know that out of a 1300 member congregation, everytime I hold a bible study,30-35 women show up (we just completed Stepping Up in the Spring). Tomorrow there are 62 women signed up to begin (Praise His Name!!) and the overflow of excitement tonight at church was SO encouraging. I cannot wait to see what God is going to do!!! I can see women getting so excited about studying God's word and it's contagious. I pray we are forever changed and His Word accomplishes ALL He sets out for it to.

Please be in prayer for our church family (Hickory, NC) and the women in this study. We love you and appreciate your obedience and allowing God to pour over you so we can bask in the overflow! We are all better because of your obedience!

Thank you, Beth!!

I was so excited being able to read the blog today while coming home from Florida back to Atlanta (suburban, my man driving, 3 kids and 2 dogs in the back, and if you opened a door we'd pop out of there like a stuffed snake in a can) -- I just got a new phone and oh, the technology! I can surf the internet on my phone now! It's a change, and I don't normally like change, but I'm trying it... :)
Anyway, I typed a comment and dang near sprained my thumbnails typing on those teeny tiny keys! And then my comment didn't even go through!!
(scream)

Somethins to be said about old phones that can just text msg.
With the bigger keys.

I LOVE Nicole C. Mullen too -- her song "When I Call On Jesus" is my life theme song. That song got me through some tears during the last 3 years! And also "On My Knees" -- yeah baby! Hotline to Jesus.

I used to work out years ago... just been thinking about it the last few yrs. But apparently it's NOT 'the thought that counts', judging by my backside. So this week starts Body For Life again. I like their workout routine.

I just want to say THANK YOU: I'm so happy to have you all here... this month is one year since I found this blog (had never even read a blog before) and you guys have sure filled a void in my heart where my sister used to be. And restored my faith that there's still people out there with love in their hearts who are loyal and don't judge or condemn. Praise You Jesus for all these siestas and our Siesta Mama!!!

I love you all, even though I don't know you. You are my sisters.

2) Somehow I hadn't heard of this song till you posted it. Needless to say, I love it and need me a good brainwashing.

3) Still pondering our conversation tonight. Beth, you truly confirmed something so huge to me, because you aren't the first person that has told me that, however, I have not a fat clue what to do with it. It is so very scary to think about! Know that the Lord spoke through you straight to my heart.

Beth,

I am so excited about beginning 2009 with Scripture memorization!
God had already led me to make this a priority this year. He really meant business didn't he?!!!! I am alss going to challnge my Tuesday night Bible study group to join us.

I also wanted to let you know that I am so thankful to have the blog as a means of communication and fellowship. After 30 years of marrige and raising 4 children, I now find myself single again, and with an empty nest. My now ex husband traded me in for a younger model and announced that his new love interst was pregnant with his child, on the same day we took our youngest (twins) to college. I thought I would die from lonliness and rejection. That was 3 and half years ago, and I didn't die. I survived. Jesus has been with me all the way, every moment cheering me on and providing for my every need.

The blog is a huge encouragment to me. I had so dreaded New Year's Eve, knowing I would b+e alone. Your post that night was wonderful and kept me company.

You have no idea how much your Bible studies have help me get through my pain and I look forward each day to your comments on the blog. You are truely a mentor to me and your comnents about family, dogs, poop, hair and all the girl talk, make me feel like we are BFF.

I am praying that I can attend Deeper Still in Greensboro this year.

Beth,

I've never heard that song...BUT I LOVE IT! Not only the tune, but the lyrics...so catchy, I'll be singing it the rest of the night!

Just wanted to tell you how thankful I am that you encouraged us to do this memorization in 2009- I posted on my blog that this was my New Year's Resolution, and I have had 4 friends tell me that they want to do it too!!! How cool is that! We are fighting the enemy by the Sword of the Spirit this year- Isn't it chilling to think that there will be more than 3000 of us memorizing Scripture and fighting Satan all over this world? Maybe this sleeping giant of the Church is waking up!

Thank you also for your sweet love for us Pastor's Wives. Though it is hard, there is nothing I would trade for it. What a privilege to serve God's people...and what a joy to study His Word with ladies in Bible study!

This is our 3rd year of doing a Ladies' Bible study at our church (we started with 3 ladies...). We just finished Stepping Up and will be starting Wising Up next week and are so excited- So far we have over 35 ladies signed up (and my Mom and Grandma are coming to! Just like our Summer Siesta bible study!)

Anyway, thanks again for all you do! We love you so much and thank you for sharing your life and passion with us!

Much love,

My Scripture that I would like to post is Malachi 3:10 (NAS) Bring the whole tithe into the storehouse, so that there may be food in My house, and test Me now in this, says the Lord of hosts, if I will not open for you the windows of heaven and pour out for you a blessing until it overflows.

I feel that now in the uncertain times is when we need to trust the Lord with our money and how we receive money. He is faithful to those who are faithful. I pray that we all can trust the Lord with what He has provided for us.

Dear Anomymous(5:38),

You can have that kind of life
change. The great thing about it is that God wants it so much for you...for all of us. I have been there! Just doing the life thing is hard, real hard!

The Lord is my rock,my fortress and my deliverer;my God is my rock in whom I take refuge. He is my shield and the horn of my salvation, my stonghold. Ps. 18:2

Seista, lean on the Rock! You will make it! Get you a binder of index cards and fill it with scriptures pertaining to your situation.
Saturate yourself in God's word.
Nothing like God's word to heal,
set captives free and just doing
the life thing! That's His business! I have about eight of these binder index cards. I always try to keep one close at hand! You can do this!Praying for you.

It's funny, isn't it, how God leads so many of us to the same place at the same time. Yesterday morning, before I left for church I was having my quiet time. I am currently going through Romans. I was in chapter 6 where Paul talks about presenting all parts of your body as instruments of righteousness. So I started listing the parts of my body...right at the very top, the very first one, I listed my mind. In the end, it all starts with cleaning up the mind. It's easier (in some respects) to act right than to think right. I asked Him for verses about my mind and how I could offer it as an instrument of righteouseness and here are the ones. I hope they'll be useful for those of us who are looking for a brainwash:
Romans 12:2
Ephesians 4:21-23
Phil 4:8
2 Cor 10:5
Romans 8:6

This morning I wrote "Brainwash!" in the margin of my journal.

Love to you all

Nicole C. Mullen's song "Brainwash" became one of my favorite songs when I saw her perform it at the Revolve tour in Atlanta, Ga. She is an amazing woman of God.
I've thought it quite comical that unbelievers have called Christians "brainwashed" as a criticism of our faith. When I hear that accusation coming from the world now, I just think.."Lord, I hope so." Let me brainwashed for His Glory.

LOVE IT! And I love the scripture goal. My first one is resonating with me so much. We talked about it in Sunday School yesterday. Thank you, Lord, for giving Beth this idea. It totally ROCKS!

Beth, Isn't it awesome when seemingly independent things match perfectly?
Yesterday I taught a class at church on "Overcoming Depression". The cornerstone was Romans 12:2, scripture memorization, and finding ways to get more God in your day. The cool thing was that my pastor used Rom 12:2 in his message also!
'Tis the season for Romans!

Beth,

Thanks for the song lyrics. It was a good reminder. Boy do I need a brainwash. I have meditated on my scripture just because I said I would, a commitment that I have made. But I have already made a trip or two back to the pit. The pull is so strong. I have pulled myself out so many times. So maybe this commitment is what will pull me out of that pit for the final time.
Thanks for caring about us.

I felt like such an idiot when I checked the blog today for the first time since Christmas (sorry!) and I couldn't believe that I had missed the sign up for the scripture memory! I was just telling my husband last night that one of my spiritual goals for this year was to begin really memorizing scripture (not like I had been faking it before) - anyway, I was sooo downtrodden until I got on to comment today and realized much to my delight that I am not the only late bloomer! With that said, I will be memorizing Ps. 145:14-16:
The Lord upholds all who fall and raises up all who are bowed down. The eyes of all look expectantly to You, and You give them their food in due season. You open Your hand and satisfy the desire of every living thing.
Now I am almost embarassed to write my name and to shame my city but I am so type-A that I have to obey the rules!!

Last night I asked my 7 year old to help me memorize my verse Isaiah 43:18-19. She goes to a Christian school and has to memorize a verse a WEEK!! and so far she has 100!! As I thought about her being able to do this, I said to myself,, self you should be able to do two a month.

And just like many of you, I also freak out when I have to remember something so I always get nervous about it. Well after just about 20 mins. I got it!!! and she said Mommy I'm so proud of you! I felt like the child and she was the parent. And then she got my husband to listen to me quote my verse, as she bragged on me. Brings tears to my eyes just rethinking it.

Ok, let me tell you why you hide the word in your heart.

I have been working on memorizing Phil. 4:6-7 since 1/1 and I was just saying to my memorization accountability partner that I was really struggling. I started with a verse that I vaguely had memorized anyway, but never get the words right. As many times as I have said it, written it, etc. I just didn't feel like it was sinking in.

Then this morning, I found out about this new law, HR 4040, that is going to totally impact my small business, thus our family income. Long story short, I spent a couple hours reading all about it and starting to really freak out. I won't even tell you all the places that my mind took me. Then in the quiet of dropping the kids off at preschool (thank God my lovelys are back to school) I heard myself start to repeat God's word. "Do not be anxious about ANYTHING, but in everything by PRAYER and petition, with THANKSGIVING present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus."

Duh, I had forgotten to pray. I got home and had a long talk with God, starting with thanking him that my business was not our only source of income. Thanking him that my children have clothes to wear and food to eat and then confessing that I was freaking out and laying it at his feet. Oh, and big surprise, I feel SOOOO much better. I still feel the need to act and write some letters to my representatives, but I know God will provide and he can sustain me.

Isn't our God an amazing God?!?! He picked this verse for me long before I knew how I would need it!!

I wanted to share this quote from a "sisterchicks" book by Robin Jones Gunn. Since we are all cyber sisterchicks, and we want a Jesus year. This described what I want to a tee.
"I fell asleep that night feelin close to my Heavenly Father. I had foend that we weren't capriciously floating through the clouds when nothing was going according to chedule. We were truly held close in everlasting arms. So close, I felt as if I were beginning to hear God's heartbeat. Each measured beat was one of grace followed by an echo of love."
Let it be so, Lord!

AmyBeth - I know how you feel. Tornadic emotions can cloud and almost seem to destroy your ability to think clearly. But you can do it because He who is in you is GREATER than he who is in the world!
Here's a few tips until Beth posts her recommendations (Beth, forgive me if I'm overstepping):
1. Prepare - Start by praying for protection and a clear mind. Pray God's Word as Beth teaches by saying things like "I have the mind of Christ." Also rebuke the enemy's attempts to interfere with verses like "Let the heads of those who surround me be covered with the trouble their lips have caused!" And of course praise Jesus - the enemy can't hang around when you are praising God.
2. Ask the Holy Spirit who lives in you to teach you and help you.
3. Then when you are ready to work on your memory verse - spend a few minutes reading it in context. Think about the meaning and how it fits in the passage.
4. Write it out - a bunch of times. As you write, pay attention to the specific word meanings.
5. Say it out loud - speak it over and over.
6. Write it on a card and keep it with you throughout the day. Take it with you on a walk - exercise your mind and body at the same time. Try to look at the card less each time.
7. If it's a long verse, break it into sections and work on each part at a time.
8. Tell it to someone else. Try to recite it to them and explain the context or what it means to you. Even if you don't get it exactly, trying to explain the meaning will help solidify it in your mind and you will get more of it the next time you try to recite it.
9. WHEN you get it - Praise GOD! Then keep saying it, and when you are learning the next one, recite the previous verses to keep them fresh.
10. YOU CAN DO IT - You can do all things through Christ! Remember God has given you a brain that is tremendously more powerful than the largest supercomputer on the planet.
p.s. - don't be anxious about it. God knows your heart and He will help you and reward you whether you memorize one verse or an entire book! And the more you memorize, the more you will want to memorize.

precious siestas. You encouraged my heart tonight. Today was one of those days that sometimes happens in a m*ss*ionary life.. you get overwhelemd with how far you are from your family and friends. You are a bit tired of speaking in another language. Then right now we have 12 hours of power outage a day.. in 6 hour intervals. It has been dark since 2 in our house, you could see your breath in my room and then our stove broke so I had no way to boil water.. and then with the stove broken and the power off tommorow for 6 hours in the morning i cannot even boil water for my cup of coffe with jesus in the morning.. nor have water to wash in. glory. It was getting to me. Then when the power came back on I started to read all the posts from the siestas.. and it reminded me that the body of Christ spans across the world.. across far oceans.. We are all one big family. i am so excited for each of us as we memorize God's truth. I learn more then ever I have to fling the truth back at Satan often.. as I live in a country that He has claimed for His territory. So after I get off I am going to meditate some more on my verse ROmans 8:1 and try not to think about the cold or the coffeless, powerless morning

That song not only sings, it preaches! I'm being "brain-washed!" Oh Lord, a sweet church sister and I were on our knees in the prayer room last night for my husband and our marriage and she said put on that helmet of salvation... You have to armor up. I told her it is so good. I'm in the word everyday - but I don't rise and put on my armor out of bed most days... I usually wait until mid-morning. I said, that is sooo Good! I'm going to do it. I did, and Hubs joined me this AM we were praying in the car as I dropped him off at work after reading our Scripture meditation for the day. Glory to God - we are being BRAIN WASHED! Transform me, Lord! Thanks Beth for thinking of us and encouraging us today!

Blessings.

Beth:

I love you to pieces! When I read your post about why you were on the blog during "sunday School" I had to smile. You are so precious to tell us when you were going to church. Girl, it is in your DNA - your Southern Baptist Arkansas blood! I love it that you keep it real. I'm especially glad you could enjoy hearing your son-in-law preach.

It brought back memories of when I was a "much younger" Pastor's wife :) and I would walk through the church auditorium on PURPOSE on my way to nursery duty so that the "little old ladies" could SEE ME and not ask my Pastor husband, "where's Jan?

Thank you for your comment about loving us Pastor's wives! We do have fish-bowl lives (as do you), but YOU have made the swimming so much more fun for this Georgia girl!

I'm so fired up about my scripture memorization that I went on ahead and learned the verses after my original submission - so I've committed Proverbs 3:3-8 to memory!

Brain-washed by the water of the Word,

Sometimes I just wonder, sometimes. Sometimes I wonder if we have become lost in our english language? Sometimes I wonder if we have left our english language and forgotten words to express the higher way of living? Sometimes I wonder if we stood before a King or Queen how would we speak? What words would we use if we stood before them? Would they be eloquent or just emotion driven?

Eating seed ....

Beth ... just wanted to thank you for helping me to do more than eat seed. I have avoided scripture memorization for many years for 2 reasons ... chemo-brain and over 40 memoryitus. Then God laid truth on my heart. Here is an excerpt from my blog to illustrate:

Two months ago I joined Coupon Sense. I will not go into great detail about it here, as much as I would like to, but I will go as far as to explain that it involves a binder with hundreds of different coupons in it. My binder is huge! How in the world does this matter you ask? It matters because when I look at the ads I know if I have a coupon for an item or not and exactly where I can find it in my binder. That is not to say that it is a book of unorganized clutter ... that it is not. But, without opening it I can tell you if I have a coupon for something and sometimes even how much it is for! I memorize them because they are important to me. (Honesty remember?) So, how could I not? How could I do anything but agree, knowing that God was most certainly watching me come to this realization, waiting to see what I would do with the knowledge. So I joined the Siesta Scripture Memory Team. I had been eating seed ...Can't remember God's Word, but can remember your coupons? Eating seed. Make plenty of time to sew, but have not the time to even finish your Bible study? Eating seed. The bottom line truth? I have not made growing and seeking God even one of the top 10 priorities in my life, let alone the most important.

and ... here I am 5 days later. The most amazing thing is that God wrote it into my heart in three days of thinking about it ... not studying it. On the third day it was just there.

I did find I needed more accountability, so I did start a blog that people are starting to follow. :o) It is:

http://praisinyahweh.blogspot.com/

(Please visit fellow siesta's ... it helps keep me motivated!)

May God's loving hand pour out his will upon each moment of your day.
