Maybe Something A Little Refreshing
Hey, Darling Things! I am sitting at the gate at the small airport in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, about to take a long way back to Houston. I've been at a wedding (I first wrote "weeding." I reckon a wedding can be a weeding indeed) all weekend and something kinda cool happened that I thought might encourage a soul that's feeling cynical. The wedding rehearsal took place first thing Saturday morning rather than Friday night perhaps to leave time for several out of town guests involved in the ceremony to arrive. We were told that the breakfast buffet in our hotel was still open after the rehearsal and, typically, I was starving so I headed that direction fully prepared to eat by myself. I don't mind that. Instead, and as only God could have planned it, five of us from the wedding party wandered in there at the same time, pulled up chairs at the same table, and ended up being almost the only ones in the whole restaurant. Not all of us at the table knew one another personally. We'd come to take part in the wedding ceremony of dear mutual friends.
Dr. Tim and Beverly LaHaye, Dr. Jim Dobson (my friend, Shirley, would join us a bit later), Heather Olford (the late Dr. Stephen Olford's wife), and I tarried, laughed and mused over scrambled eggs and lukewarm coffee for a delightfully long time. (Dr. LaHaye was officiating over the ceremony and Dr. Dobson and I were each speaking. Heather is considered among those very dearest to the bride.) Our conversations took us to family, church, and the Savior we all have in common. Dr. Dobson (I cannot bring myself to call him "Jim" although I've known him for a number of years now. I can live with Doc so that's how I refer to him when I'm feeling casual) told us a wonderful story about his dad, a traveling evangelist, who was at the pinnacle of an exploding speaking ministry when his wife told him she could use some help with their son who'd begun to give her a few challenges. (That would be Doc.) He dropped what he was doing, cancelled his calendar indefinitely, and headed home. Although he served a local church faithfully the rest of his life, he never recaptured the momentum of the ministry he'd had. He'd sacrificed it, providentially, for his wife and son.
Dr. Dobson later read a letter to us that his dad had written his bride for their wedding day. In it he expressed that, with eyes wide open, he was binding himself to her in covenant before God for the rest of their lives and that, should their marriage ever call for mental anguish, he would remain her faithful husband throughout. He explained that he considered the success of their marriage to be a husband's responsibility and he would do everything he could to make her happy. And he did. As I listened to Dr. Dobson tell stories about his dad, I thought - No wonder he does what he does.
At that same table, Dr. LaHaye began to talk about end time events and I had to keep my chin from dropping to the floor. I thought, "I'm listening to all this from the prophecy man himself." I mean, this is the guy that wrote how many books in the Left Behind series with Jerry Jenkins? And here's the important part: he sat at that table of five and spoke of the signs of the times and the coming King with a twinkle in his eye and, I don't doubt, a race in his pulse. Not one hint of burn out. Stunning. Girlfriend, you can be Post-trib or No-trib and still appreciate that. I watched Beverly, an author herself who has penned many books on what it means to be a Godly wife and woman, look with such affection on her man and such heightened interest in what he was saying...as if she'd never heard it. He spoke of how he loved her and how he didn't know what he'd do without her. How she was the administrative one of the two. Several times over breakfast I watched them tenderly reach out and touch each other.
I'd never met Heather Olford before but I'd heard about her for years. She totally captivated me as she shared how we must hold fast to our passion for Jesus Christ, come what may. You could still hear a hint of Irish in her accent, having left her home country for her new husband many years ago. After saying goodbye to her beloved man of 56 years and entering her early eighties, anyone would give her permission to just coast her way home. That's decidedly not what she's doing. I found her utterly remarkable. I wondered if maybe she looked and acted 15 years younger than she was because she'd been unwilling to let herself off the seeking and serving hook. She referred to something she'd read in a devotional book and I marveled that this powerful woman of God intended to seek fresh revelation about Christ until the day she saw Him face-to-face. She spoke of Him with such affection that it made me want to run to my hotel room and fall on my face before Jesus and see what new He would show me, too.
All four of those people are fallible just like we are. None of them needs or wants to be placed on a pedestal but I will tell you where they're well worthy of our respect. They have maintained Godly passion and spiritual discipline in a long obedience the same direction that has taken each of them on the road to suffering...and persecution. They are real to the bone and what they loved and felt compelled by Christ to give their lives to decades ago, they still love and give their lives to today.
I spoke to a flight attendant on a plane this trip who struck up a conversation with me over a book she saw me reading. She told me that she goes to church but her good friend won't come with her. Even though her friend professes to love God, she thinks all people in ministry are charlatans. Some of you have undoubtedly been hurt by seeing the weaknesses and failures of people in the Christian world you admired. A scandal can be absolutely devastating and don't think for a moment Satan isn't hoping to take down a thousand with the one. When you lose your faith over flesh and blood, the devil has gotten exactly what he schemed. The warfare is inconceivably fierce against those out front and many leaders are caught off guard by it and seduced before they realize what hit them. God help us all. God forgive us all. God restore us all...as many as will let Him do what it really takes. At the same time, I want you, my dear fellow sojourners, to know that so many out there are the real thing. They love Jesus Christ and pray when nobody's looking and get up in the mornings and open their Bibles for the ten-thousandth time. They weep before Him for lost and hurting souls and rejoice before Him over one touched life. They do a very hard thing for a very long time...and, often, under very harsh criticism.
Oh, Sister, don't let the enemy get you in the trap of cynicism. Yes, there's some inauthentic - and flat-out-false stuff in the church and we must go to great lengths not to contribute to it by insisting upon our own authenticity and humility and sound scholarship before God and man. But there is also so much good. So many good. Not perfect I dare say. But good. So many of you are among those. I read your comments and find myself edified and encouraged in Spirit. I pray that maybe these stories build you up a bit this Lord's Day.
He is so faithful. I love loving Him with you.

Oh Beth, you are so right. Satan would like nothing better then to knock us out. One by one, or like you said thousands through one. We have to keep our eyes on Jesus. Thank you for the stories of those that are still passionate after so many years. It makes my heart warm.
God Bless You!
Jennifer
Thank-you.

Your post is such a blessing to me this day, a day full of blessings as I worshiped with my parents at my old church and worshiped with friends and a priest who proclaims Christ in truth and boldness with love.
I pray you wake up refreshed mentally, physically, and spiritually tomorrow ready to minister where ever you go.
I needed this...
These stories did build me up this Lord's Day.
Thank you Lord, and thank you Beth.
I loved reading about your "visit" at the wedding. I count myself blessed to have heard Heather Olford speak at our Women's Board Christmas party recently. Her son, David, is also an awesome speaker and man of God. Thank you for sharing with us about these wonderful men and women of God.
As I wait to see what the Lord has for me and the ministry that He has given me in 2009, I find myself wanting desperately to be found authentic and faithful.
The Lord recently asked me to do something that I had not anticipated having to do. He gave me wise counsel from trusted friends and family and confirmed over and over what He was saying. So, I obeyed what He asked.
I'm sure those with whom you fellowshipped have been in similar situations along the ministry road, as have you. It encourages me to be reminded that no one has the complete road map to what God is doing in their lives. Not Dr. Dobson, Dr. LaHaye, no one. We simply must walk by faith and stay faithful to the last word we heard from the Lord.
Thank you for the encouragement. I'm not sure that made much sense to anyone but me, but thank you for letting me share.
Leah
Amen!
Ah, sweet, precious words. Thanks for sharing those stories with us.
I also want to thank you for passing that passion for and knowledge of how to have a relationship with HIM with me. It has changed my life and legacy! :o) *Does that make sense?
Many blessings to you.
Anna
Amen Beth!!!! and Thank you so very much!!!
love in Christ,
Kimberly, Alabama
Thank you for sharing your heart so beautifully Beth. I love that you are so "real" - so open and honest.
These are such encouraging words. What a privilege to see these amazing people through your eyes and to know that they have remained faithful. It inspires each of us to go deeper into Him and walk the path He has chosen for us.
Safe trip home dear Beth.
Thank you for this post....
I just wish I knew where I stood with the Lord...
Thank you,
Wow, what a wedding! Thank you, Beth for your taking time to post the highlights of what must have been an incredible "Table of Faith"! Have a wonderful, restful, joyful week.
Wendy
What I would give to sit at a breakfast table with those exact guests. Although, I think I would be decidedly NOT cool with all my inquiries and questions and general "jaw to the floor" look about me.
Thank you for these stories and for the way they encourage someone very simple, like me, to continue to fight the fight for the One who is victorious.
Thanks for sharing. I am so glad you got some refreshment yourself. It always seems like those unplanned meals end up being so uplifting.
Joyfully,
Lauri
Whoa....
As I read this post, I looked up at my bookshelf and found numerous Dobson, LaHaye, & Moore books! And you were eating buffet food with them. Had to pause there for a pretty surreal moment.....
Ok, I'm back.
This post couldn't have come at a better time. I have a friend of MANY years who was raised Jewish but has recently decided that God is actually a fantasy - like Santa. She has actually taught her young sons that God and Santa are fun to hear stories about, but are nothing more than fairy tales. She has also become very VERY vocal in her beliefs and looks for ways to start arguments. I am having lunch on the 23rd with a group of friends - she is one of them - and I am praying for patience and a lot of love for her. I am also praying for God to work a miracle in her. I pray that God will use me so that she doesn't see a part-time Christian. I pray that she'll see something different and want to be a part of it. The pressure I am feeling is intense, so I am also praying for peace.
I heart you, Beth, and thank Him for you. I thank Him also that you are a "normal person." Except, of course, you ate breakfast with 4 "biggies." :) Whoa.
Robyn (3girlsmom)
Wow! To be able to sit at the table with all of these wonderful people. I'm sure it was amazing!
Guess what? We will all be feasting with JESUS! We will be able to meet all of these people, but JESUS will be the center!
Thank you for this wonderful post, that gives a 'taste' of what it will be like in Heaven!
Not only am I too often cycinal, I am horribly judgemental and close-minded. And yet, God lovingly and patiently takes me by the hand, guidng me toward Him and opening my eyes. I believe that I am "thawing", and the warmth and love that creeps in as I seek compassion toward and understanding of others is so freeing. Somehow I still seem to cling to my version of what's right (not His), and find myself clsoing off again and again. But God has a way of reminding me (often through you, Beth, like today) that we are all seeking and none of us has it down. I'm getting fond of those moments when I discover how wrong I actually am - I have to laugh because I'm so surprised every time! Thank you for today's reminder.
Building up, loving, helping, overlooking a fault and don't be critical, I think is so important when I think of how fragile I am.
love, Allison
Lesson #1: Stay true to Jesus.
Lesson #2: Eat breakfast ; )
Looking forward to that BIG Banquet in heaven when ALL of us will get to meet -and thank - ALL these wonderful leaders who've pointed us to Christ.
Hey Beth,
What a word! I've been going back through Believing God, and I just watched Session 3 again (God Can Do What He Says He Can Do) today. As I read your post, it occurred to me that the best antidote for cynicism is a healthy dose of seeing God's glory! When I stop to think about it, the thought of cynicism in the face of God's glory is unfathomable. Yet, I fall prey to this every day. To put it in context, how RIDICULOUS would it have been if Moses had responded in cynicism to God passing over him in Exodus 33, "Is that it?" Can't even imagine it! God's glory nearly killed him. His glory was, and still is, so great that it scared every bit of cynicism right out of the Israelites when they saw Moses's face.
Webster defines the word "cynical" as "contemptuously distrustful of human nature and motives." So, if we remain cynical having seen God for who he is, it must be because (like you say in Believing God) we have made a god in our image. Praise God that we place our faith and hope in a God who is the same yesterday, today, and forever!!
Oh Most HIGH God, I pray that we would see you for who you ARE, not for who we have made you to be. For in truly gazing upon your splendor, your majesty, and your miraculous nature, we cannot possibly hold on to cynicism. You alone are faithful! May we have the faith to see you for who you truly are! And may the sight of you cure us of any tendency to be cynical.
Love you!!
Missy
I notice there were actually six of you seated around that table. Christ was definitely in your midst. Can you just imagine how wonderful the marriage feast will be???
I pray that God would give us all the discernment to know how to pray for each other and to endure faithfully until He comes or calls us home. I pray for you, Beth, to have the Holy Spirit arming you daily for the walk of faith He has called and empowered you for. In Jesus Name. Amen.
I love the church.
I know that there are weaknesses in the body, but there is a tremendous amount of real, true, servant-like LOVE! My dearest friends in the world are all serving God in one capacity or another at our church, and I love them all the more for taking the challenge.
Thank you for some encouragment in these somewhat discouraging times!
We love you, Beth!
That is so cool! Dr.Dobson and Bro. LaHaye and spouses! They have all been a blessing to me.
It can be tiring serving and sometimes it doesn't seem like what I am doing is all that valuable to God. Sometimes I wish we could do something easier, but then I realize that there is nothing more worthwhile.
Thanks for the encouragement.
Beth,
Thank you so much for sharing this and for the insight. You are precious!
Love,
Jean
Dear Beth, so glad to hear from you this afternoon. Wish I could have been at that table; just to listen and see the love of Jesus on everyone's face.
I'm looking forward to your visit here in El Paso. Satan is really on the offensive, and we have so many hurting churches. I'm praying for the event already - for you, the team and the attendees. Can't wait ... He will be glorified!
Very refreshing! Thanks for a peek into your weekend. And I'm soooo looking forward to the team bringing Focus on Marriage!!
Ditto. I'm the (grown-up) p.k. who participated in the survey a few days ago. Satan so wanted to destroy me, but GOD!

You are quite the cool chick in that crowd and we are so happy to blog with you! I'm hoping that Jesus splits the skies any day now...come quickly, Lord Jesus. Until then we press on! Tootles, J
What a sweet encouragement! This has been a knock out year for my family. My husband resigned from a very unhealthy church in Feb. and didn't find another job until June. We almost lost everything. But we knew......we knew we had to leave that position. It was destroying us little by little.
I have felt so very cynical at times. I felt peace about the decision to leave.....but why all the suffering that went along with it? We may never know. But we didn't turn from our Lord....that wasn't even a thought. It was and still is today....very hard. We are broken in many ways because of what we experienced at the hands of the church.
So......many......have been wounded and we aren't alone in our pain.
We love ministry and serving...we cling to His righteousness and His mercy to get us through.
Thank you for sharing about some very special spiritual giants. It is so uplifting!
As you write, I picture in my mind's eye a breakfast with you someday, Beth. Maybe it will be years down the road or on the other side, but I daresay it will happen. For I know dear Sister that as much as you share, you have the same amount that you cannot, just like me and all the Siestas. And yet, it is our testimony--and the authentic walk that you are walking is a blessing to many. Daily, my Chris and I pray for you and Keith and your family. This thing is hard--but we are not alone--nor are the LaHaye's, Dobson's and Olford's. We all need one another to edify us and to intercede. Thank you for blessing this sister today. You are so loved!
I am so happy that you got to have that encouraging moment with the 4 people you mentioned... I know that encourages you to keep doing what you do, and encourages us too.
Love you...
GOD IS SO COOL! What an amazing breakfast- thank you for including us in your ministry and life!
Thank you Beth.
Just finished the Stepping Up study with about 30 other women, and am intending to write you and LPM a letter explaining some of the amazing things that happened over the course of the study.
Thank you for being faithful, and being consistent and pursuing the Lord more and more through your studies. So many are impacted...
God bless!
My sweet Beth and family,
Reading your blog today reminds me again what our purpose is to be. To glorify him, to bring his praise. No matter where we are or what we do; our lives should bring him glory.
Thanks for reminding me to keep the main thing the MAIN THING! Serving, loving, and worshipping my Saviour!
In Christ,
Laura
Beth, Thank you for your words and posting this. I feel like you were speaking directly to me giving me Godly wisdom and advice through your experience at this breakfast.
Joey T.
This hit me with so much encouragement and love for those of us, only being where we are by the grace of God. Sharing who we used to be but more importantly whose we are today. Getting vulnerable and seeking that HEALING that comes from Christ Alone.
I love and appeciate you as well as your precious family!
Thank you for serving us so un-selfishly, we notice like no other!
You wrote, "so many out there are the real thing. They love Jesus Christ and pray when nobody's looking and get up in the mornings and open their Bibles for the ten-thousandth time. They weep before Him for lost and hurting souls and rejoice before Him over one touched life. They do a very hard thing for a very long time...and, often, under very harsh criticism."
So many of these are in the workplace that we encounter every day, not just in the churches that we see once or twice a week. I have seen my fair share of folks receive criticism for following Christ and letting His light shine at work.
That you think of us in your everyday activities and events, and want to encourage us through them is such a blessing. Someday I'll thank you in person with a big tight hug. God bless you richly!
Thank you! I just sat down and prayed for a Word from the Lord about an church decision that has plagued me for some time. I started to listen to your 30 minute “Nabal Grazing” lesson and decided to check our Blog first- so I pray God speaks to me through I Samuel too. Thank you again for being an anointed vessel, for being a 'faithful to the TRUTH' teacher. I really appreciate your advice and encouragement. Love, Dee
Wow!! That is so awesome... I've met many Christian women in ministry and (so far) they are all so wonderful and encourage me so much. Bless Him for faithful servants!
OKAY.. these "word verification" things CRACK ME UP!!
You won't believe me when I tell you my word on this comment is "PANTIE"... no lie!
I mean, ...get out.
Ha! The things I type for y'all.
Thank you soooo much for this post. I soooo needed it. My husband and I have been under attack for the past couple of months very hard and are finding it hard to push through. You have said in earlier posts that the enemy strikes hard at the ones he fears the most. The ones that can cause him the most damage. How I feel unworthy of that task, but obviously he sees something that I don't feel right now. I pray we can all press on towards the goal in which Christ calls us. Thank you Beth.
Thank you for the reminder. satan would love to get us to not trust or believe in the Holy Spirit's work in our lives, our leader's lives and so on. He would love for us to apply the law and not grace, therefore making the world even more skeptical. I need to remember to pray against this!
:-)
Beth,
What a great reminder to lift you and these leaders up to the Lord, for protection, strength in the storm and resolve to continue walking/soaring with Christ our Lord. Time for me to repent for not being consistent in praying for you. Please forgive me.
Dear Beth,
Thank you so much for sharing a peak into your weekend. What an encouragement to hear the testimony of faith of those you mentioned. It sounds as if you were encouraged by their fellowship. I am glad you had this time together.
I had the honor of hearing Dr. Stephen Olford speak at my church
in 1995. Loved his accent. His message was powerful.
I have seen first hand a ministry fall like a house of cards devastated by scandal.
Your words: "The warfare is inconceivably fierce against those out front...." are so true.
Dear friend, you are one of those on the front line. I pray for you daily. I pray that God would hold you in the palm of his hand. I pray that in your daily walk you would be a mighty warrior dressed for battle each day. The battle is fierce, the enemy is real but the victory is ours in Christ Jesus.
You always enourage my heart. May we be found faithful in our daily walk so others may be encouaged and curious to know Him.
Merry Christmas!
Oh Beth, what a great reminder for me as a Christian to be as authentic as I can. So many people I work with and come in contact with complain about how fake Christains can be. This breaks ny heart so much, we are to be like Christ and oh how I fail from time to time, but for some reason only God knows HE brings me back into focus with HIM. It is so important for all of us to be authentic we may never know who is watching and who we are influencing.
Last year my son was struggling and still is with some issues, I could not bring myself to have my small group pray for him, and you know why----- because I thought they would judge me, cause lets face it not all Christians are understanding. One Sunday morning, an acquaintance asked me how my children were. I felt safe and began to tell his story, I knew she has a son who struggled with some of the same issues. She asked have I told my small group, I said no, she encouraged me to and wondered why not, I said because Christians are the most judgmental people I know, she looked at me and said are you, my mouth dropped open and wept tears of sadness and said you know many times I am and do not realize it. Oh Beth, that was an eye opener for me. I am to be salt and light of the world. It gave me more compassion why people do what they do and reasons why they got there. I want to be real, to love the unlovable just like Jesus, that is my reason for living. JUST LIKE HIM!!!
God Bless You
Alexia
Dear Beth,
This was more than a little refreshing. I've been having a hard time lately with some unanswered prayers. Today at church, I had to force myself to sit on my pew and listen to the pastor. Your words on the perseverance of these spiritual leaders humbled me. It was encouraging and a reminder to get over myself.
The Lord bless you and keep you and yours.
Kathy
And this is one of the very reasons I love you so.
♥,
tammie
Hi Beth,
It is such an encouragement to hear first hand stories about people staying authentic, and gripped with passion for Jesus. I needed to hear this today.
Hugs,
Adrienne
Thank you, Beth, for being so real and authentic, yourself. And I love loving Him with you, too.
This is SO true.
When you started sharing about who joined you for breakfast...I thought...I would not have been able to eat because I would have been soaking up everything that was being said! What an incredible time God gave you!
What an amazing breakfast! Had I have happened to be at that same buffet, I don't think I'd have been able to resist pulling up a chair to listen, marvel, and learn!!!!! WOW!!!!! So blessed! Thank you!
Amen. How it must grieve Jesus and please Satan when we allow 'rib issures' to divide the body, while allowing satan further access to us and those around us. Thank you for the reminder that our eyes must be on Jesus...whether we are Tim LaHaye, Beth Moore, or just a homeschool mama! We are all just a bunch of sinners saved by grace! You bless me so!
hugs~ Mariel
Thank you for such a great reminder of the realness of their passion for Christ!!
Thank you for the encouragement, Beth. I received a phone call earlier this week from a woman disappointed in a fellow Christian. I heard her say, "All Christians are (insert negative comment here). I know she is hurting and I wanted so much to reassure her that there are A LOT of people serving Christ with a passion and heart for Him. I want so much to please the Lord and never be that example that might turn another away from the ONE True Deliverer!
I SO appreciate you and your ministry. I am HANDS DOWN so much better for it. I participated in my first Beth Moore bible study 11 years ago (Living Beyond Yourself) and was in such bondage feeling as if I had nothing to offer anyone. God used you to spark an unquenchable thirst for His Word in my life and I simply cannot get enough of Him. Praise His Name.
Thank you a million times and I pray for you as you continue to follow His leading so we may glean from your obedience.
I just love to talk with those who are authentic in their faith. I just love real people. The other day at a brunch with other mom's I connected with a mom I hadn't talked with in a while and both of us were refreshed by the conversation b/c it was real. We ran into eachother later and both said how much we enjoyed it. Authenticity seems rare at times...so many people want to look like they have it all together...I got over that a long time ago when God brought me to my knees. Now I would love to be able to introduce myself like this, "Hi, I'm Jackie Sue and I'm a sinner in need of a Savior...everyday, all the time". Even in church...I'm so glad you had a nice visit with such folks...can't wait til Heaven when I will get to meet all my mentors...those who have impacted me for all eternity even though we've never met...and hey, Siesta Mama...you are one of them! Many blessings and Merry Christmas!!!
Thanks for the encouragement Beth! Makes me want to run to Him for a fresh word this second. He is AWESOME indeed. Amen and amen!
Oh how I needed this today. Life has been hard these last 6 months with retiring, a sick mom, and grown children doing their thing. I have found it hard to keep my spirits up even though I turn the music up even louder than usual. I felt a rush while reading your blog and realized that God has been there through it all. The good man I love, the strength to go another day, healing and hope. My God has been there waiting for me to recognize him as my comforter, deliverer, and Savior. Thanks Beth
so cool... i studied (and met my husband at Focus on the Family institute)my mother was appalled when I referred to Doctor James Dobson as "jimmy d". So freeing... give it a whirl!
Oh Miss B, You are right on it. My husband and I faithfully served 8 years in our church and in street ministry. We had home group, women's group, men's group. We had church. When our infant became critically ill we sat at the hospital alone. We called the Pastor, no call back. We were the ones always serving and in our time of needing service we were alone. I would love to tell you it didn't damage our relationship with God, but that would be a lie. We have let our dissapointments with human beings affect our relationship with the supreme being. Your post helped me much...may God help us to not give the devil another inch. I love you and pray for you and LPM every Monday.
Thank you so much for this encouraging post! I am so motivated by people in thier fifties, sixties, seventies......, that still have a fresh passion for our Lord Jesus Christ! My husband and I were raised in the church by our parents but now both of our parents (who are in their late fifties, early sixties) seem to have lost their passion and zeal for our Lord and have admittedly discontent feelings towards life in general. I do not want that for myself, my husband, or our children. I want a passion that you have described in your post today that lasts forever! I know it takes humbling myself to my Saviour daily and searching His word and His will for my life!
Thank you again for your encouraging words!
God Bless You All!
Sacha
I would have absolutely loved to be a table with all of you. I am overwhelmed just thinking about all the bibilical knowledge you share! Sheesh !! I would have been so honored to even just listen in, although I know with you there Beth there was lots of laughing going on too!
Like so many others, I've lived through the fall of a pastor and watched the utter devastation that followed. We simply can't let ourselves become jaded, lumping all into the misstep of one.
How refreshing to hear of the years-long faithful walk of these precious warriors.
Edifying words indeed.
Blessings,
Melinda
Thank you for your precious words today!! I needed the encouragement today and the Lord provided it through you. Kimberly in Northern Michigan
Quite frankly Im so super jealous that I couldnt even just be a fly on the wall and listen to your conversations! But it is a blessing to read your words - Thank you for sharing your life with us. It truly is an encouragement and spurs me to seek my God more!
Thank you, Beth for these encouraging words! Yes, there are so many with a heart to serve, worship and praise our Savior! My parents go to Dr. Dobson's church, Stonebriar, and it is always a joy to visit them and have the indulgence of hearing his preaching on Sunday morning. He's such a man of true, authentic integrity. I wonder how their blogs would have described that day. A merciful blessing, I'm sure!
Much gratitude for your servanthood, also! Love, Amy in OK
Thank you Beth for that reminder and for sharing your weekend adventures with us! I know I needed to hear it!
With love,
Nikki
What a joy to sit with Dr. Dobson and listen to him tell that beautiful story of his father. I have 4 grown children, and raised them with guidance and wisdom from Dr. and Shirley Dobson. What a privilege to live in a time when we can hear the wisdom from so many godly men and women!
Blessings to you!

Beth,
Thank you for sharing the stories with us. What a weekend you had!!
My man & I were blessed to be with you, Travis and CeCe at Converge on Thursday. You really know how to capture a crowd! I don't think Satan had a square inch in that building! Thank you for sharing God's Word with us!
Love & Blessings,
Bobbie
Thanks, Beth, what an encouragement for the soul today.
Love, Julie
Thank you for sharing with us Beth ----- a needed word of encouragement - must confess that my jaw did drop when I read who you had breakfast with . . . and that jaw drop includes you dear sister - while you show us that you are "just like us" (and we SOOOO thank you for that -keeps us all grounded so we do not make you an "idol"), we honor you for all that you have sacrificed and the seeds you have sown for the Kingdom. Our lives have been enriched via your willingness to be a vessel through which the Father can train us up in the way we should go . . .
Thank you for sharing this, Beth!
That is very definitely refreshing!
Have a wonderful week :)
lavonda
What a neat time of fellowship God orchestrated for all of you! I loved hearing a little about your time together. I actually heard Dr. Dobson share that same story and letter his dad had written on Focus on the Family not long ago. What a legacy he left by the sacrifice he made. Thanks again for sharing your heart. It encouraged me this day!
With love ~ Kristin
:)
I needed that word today! Satan is trying everything under the sun to take me and my family down. The good news is that we all have christ living and active in our lives. Reading this passage just reminded me just how desperate we need to hang on and have the passion for Christ.
How good of you, Beth, to give us a look at what some of our dearest heroes are like when they sit down at the breakfast table and prove themselves not only faithful but real. It's a modern day version of Hebrews 11 and each of us must run to win. I am reminded not to take any of my heroes for granted but to faithfully support all of you in prayer. Thanks so much for the fine Bible study materials you share with women all over the world. My Bible study ladies in a Sunday a.m. and a Thursday evening study group are all poised to do the Esther study in the new year. There's no doubt that each of us is on stage for this particular time in kingdom history.I want to finish well! May He give us the grace to do it!
JoAnn, Norfolk, VA
What a joy it is to see men and women walk in faithfulness and zeal with the Lord! Praise the Lord for their example!
This post was very encouraging and exactly what I needed to hear. I've been involved in many churches for various reasons....only two I left due to sin issues. That was recent and very difficult. At only twenty four years old, I'm wanting to plant myself and learn from the "aged" (not in chronological age, but in Godly wisdom). Sometimes I get a glimpse and "feeling" from the Holy Spirit that others are looking at me for authenticity.
Lord, I pray for my dear Sisters in Christ. Encourage them. Give them a sincere passion for You, God...whatever it takes. It may be sorrow or it may be joy, but prove and test us until we are faithfully Yours. Even so, Lord Jesus, come quickly. In Your Precious Name, Jesus, Amen.
Thank you mamma beth! I needed a reminder to hold on tighter to God's truth. With my hand over my heart I will protect it no matter the cost.
This time I'm not going to be so easy for Satan to drag back! No sir-e!!!
Beth, thank you so much. I don't think I knew how much my soul needed that until I read your refreshing salve of a post.
I love loving Him with you too!
A long obedience in the same direction...Oh, how I love that. Just today at church, on the completion of a week that saw something VERY large come to fruition in my life, I sensed the Spirit saying, "Keep going...we're not through yet." Thanks for the encouragement to keep doing the "thang." To keep pressing in, though it's long and perhaps daunting.
Thank you Beth. Perfect timing as usual.
This morning, I returned, for the first time in a long time, to visit the church and church staff who have greatly contributed to my struggle w/ cynicism. Due to a great scandal that occurred there during my senior year of high school (during which I was actively sought after to be drawn into the ordeal as some sort of political point person because of the position I held on a hiring committee), I've struggled deeply in respecting, loving, and forgiving the ministers involved. While there, I was struck at the depth of healing the Lord has brought to the situation as He revealed to me that even in that horrible situation, He has begun working it "for good" in my life, and theirs, as He has promised to do. There are many in that place that love our Jesus and even those ministers who fell before mentioned things this morning indicating the healing the Lord has brought to their lives. They are serving, building up the body, and leading people to Jesus. I saw HUMILITY in them. It was so huge! He is in control! He reminded me of that even in those who wounded me so deeply before. We truly never have an excuse to forget the great things He has done and as such, lapse into cynicism. He has set me free, released me from prion, and is constantly binding up this broken heart of mine. What a Savior right?
Thanks again. :)
I love loving Him with you too, Beth. Thank-you for those encouraging and edifying words to us....to me. I'm not on a pedestal, but I know others are watching just SO they can see me fall. It does touch my heart deeply that I have let my blessed Savior down so many times, because of my flawed life. Yet, I will keep on keeping on....
Looking forward to breakfasts such as yours someday....probably in Glory! What sweet conversations those will be!!
(After almost 26 years of marriage, my husband and I joke...."If you ever leave me, I'm going with you!")
Melana in (verrrrry cold) Wyoming!
Thanks Mama Beth!!! I needed that reminder and I'm so appreciative of you sharing that sweet time.
I hope you have a wonderful week ahead. Can we see some pix from Converge??? I thought about all our TX Siesta's that night.
Praying for you always.
Merry Christmas!
Fran
Beth, I needed to hear this today. I have been in ministry for about 4years (not quite as long as your friends) and have already begun to lose heart a bit over the flesh and blood stuff that threatens my resolve. To "keep on keeping on" has never had more meaning for me. I wouldn't even try to unload my heart right here but I just want you to know how glad I am for the encouragement your words bring. I love your heart.
~Elaine
Oh Beth
As I sit here with tears in my eyes, I hope you inlcude yourself as one of the "good" ones! There is not another woman in a "highly visible ministry" or any ministry for that matter, that I respect more!
As a pastor's wife I know the struggles that those in ministry face each day. (of course not on the level of a Shirley Dobson or a Beverly LaHaye, goodness me! or may I add a Beth Moore.) But I am so very blessed to have one of those special Godly men that put me first; even over ministry when need be. I have recently been diagnosed with Crohns disease and will be tested soon for cancer, and my man has been right there every step of the way! Praise You Lord!
As for those of us in ministry may we be every mindful of the evil one and keep our eyes on Christ!
I know that one of your prayer requests is to "finish well" like a Heather Olford. I pray that over you this day!
Much love!
Kristi B.
Beth thank you so much for these timely comments. Thank you very much.
Vickie
Siesta Beth, You are right. Satan loves to attack the church from within, because then there are hurt feelings of the members and some of them never get over it, allowing Satan the victory. And when strife stirs up trouble in the church, then the un-churched see what is going on and think that they are better off not being involved in church! The lies he spreads hurt as many as he can. And it overjoys him when he can destroy the very workings of God. We need to be vigilant about prayer for our church leaders! Thank you for the reminder!
I love you. Delilah
Beth,
You have no idea how much I needed those words after a weekend of utter despair.
Thank you.
At this risk of sounding cliche and/or over dramatic, Beth, you cannot imagine how much your words meant to me at the end of today.
Thanks, Beth. Our home church, Wasilla Bible Church, was the attack of what is believed to be arson. Over a million dollars worth of materials (incl. offices full of commentaries, etc.) went up in smoke late Friday night. But oh, I wish all you Siestas could have been with us at our "Winter Cabin" (a/k/a a local middle school gymnasium) for service this morning.
What an amazing God we serve and I was so reminded that the enemy hates everything about Jesus - how He came to be with us, how He saves us from sin, how He sets us free, the amazing hope that we know He's coming back to take us home. If it's trying to stop the Magi in the first century, or burning down a building in the 21st century, the enemy is still trying to stop the message of salvation, freedom and hope that Jesus brings.
Thanks for the reminder of Godly, humble older brothers and sisters who have not just talked the talked, but truly walked the walk.
God bless the Body,
Warm in Alaska.
Dear Beth,
Thank you for this precious post!
You are so right..there are many, so many, who really love the Lord Jesus Christ and are pressing on in faith.
One such woman who mentored me through her life when in lived in OK is tonight sitting in a hospital room in Germany with her son who is fighting for his life. Just a few days ago, while he was serving our country in Iraq, they discovered he has acute leukemia.
I think of his mom, ever the faithful saint, and know that many lives will be impacted as they watch she and her husband walk through this heartache.
Amazing to just KNOW that they will glorify God no matter what!
If you'd pray for him, and the Siestas too, it would mean so much to the family.
They've set up a blog for him...

Thanks for the wonderful post!
Merry Christmas!
Thank you for sharing your life with us. What an encouragement to be reminded that there are high profile Christians who are still living it out at the breakfast table in public and at home. God bless you and may He protect you as you lead the way.
Kim . . . who is
Grafted by Grace
P.S. Spent last evening going over the Esther bible study that our group will be starting in January. CAN NOT WAIT!!!!! Lives will be changed for eternity.
Your post serves as a reminder to pray for our pastors and church leaders and teachers. They are vulnerable and Satan does like to take down as many as he can with one hit.
May you be blessed with a fresh advent as we approach the joy of our Savior's birth.
Jen
Thanks, Beth. What a blessed breakfast you had! I thought of you this morning reading the following from Oswald Chambers (My Utmost for His Highest).
"The author or speaker from whom you learn the most is not the one who teaches you something you didn’t know before, but the one who helps you take a truth with which you have quietly struggled, give it expression, and speak it clearly and boldly."
I am thankful for you.
Wow. Thanks for sharing that, Beth. That was very inspiring and encouraging.
Beth...
Two words: PREACH IT. From the rafters to the rooftops, this message seeks the heart of every believer on earth! Thank you for sharing the "insider's" perspective of those well-respected and dearly loved saints who stand at the forefront carrying the banner of God before the masses. You, my dear, are in that company, and so beautifully fitted for what God has had planned for you all along. So beautifully fitted. Thank you for choosing this journey with God that includes so many of us. Thank you for reminding us day and again that you are "real to the bone" and flesh and blood just like we are. Thank you for being who God created you to be with a heart to love us... Even through a computer monitor and internet feed.
You are a prize in His crown, Beloved, and we praise our God that you are so humble as to share that prize with us... our Jesus.
Blessings and love, as Christmas approaches and our hearts turn toward the advent of our Savior in the form of a tiny baby's birth. Oh the glory of that revelation... Almost too much to bear.
Love you!
How wonderful that God blessed you with the these people during your lunch. Dear sister Beth please know you too are among those who encourage and lift up others with the hope that a person can truly serve God without failure and corruption. I can't tell you how much I've learned from your honest sharing over the years. As I carry out God's plan for my own ministry, your example not only gives me hope but also sets a high standard. Thank you for loving God so much and dedicating your life to Him. It reflects in all you do and edifies the multitude around you!
Thank you for posting this Beth! We were asked to be a blessing to God this week!
I am trying to stay postive not only in December but the whole year!
Sounds like a wonderful weekend. How I pray that someone will one day love me like Dr. Dobson's father loved his wife. I am always encouraged to hear stories of such Godly love because they give me hope for the future!
I had the priviledge of inviting a friend from college to church yesterday morning, who had only been to church once in his life. He claims that the Christians he is around on a frequent basis go to church on Sundays and act "good" for that day, but come back into the business world the following Monday as if all morality has gone out the window. What a timely reminder you provided that there really are people out there "doing the thing" day in and day out. Thanks Beth!
What a awesome round table discussion that was ! I know you were soaking it all in. The one phrase you mentioned that spoke to me was " Holding on to our passion for the Lord, Come what may." Today I needed that. Bless you Beth
Thanks Beth for sharing...I love God, talk to him all day...have my quiet time (growing in what quiet time is) but I have not found a church here where I have live for the past 4 years...it is very clicky at most of the churches I have visited and I do not want to be a part of that...i just want to serve and grown...and guess what...i have gotten closer to God by not being in church these past 4years than if I had been in one because i am one of those people that follow others...guess what...being by myself (I do have a family) and not having anyone on earth to follow and I am following Jesus...go figure.
What a wonderful divine appointment the Lord provided for you. How special for all of you to have breakfast together.
I absolutely love James Dobson.
I thought of my parents toward the end of your post. My dad has been pastoring for 50 years. He just completed 50 years of preaching this past summer. He will soon be 75 years old and it blesses me so much to see him still so anointed when he gets up there to preach. My mom has been THE model pastor's wife.
God has blessed my three sisters and me because of their faithfulness (and many sacrifices) through the years.
Thank you for sharing this with us today. God bless!
Love,
Valerie
refreshing, I need, a deep touch from Him. sincerely i believe i am more bound than you ever were beth. i know you say that but i think i have beat you on this one.
This brought tears to my eyes. I know we all go through seasons in our relationship with Christ. Yesterday in Sunday school we talked about being an overcomer and doing Jesus' will to the end. (Rev. 2:26) Hanging in there - and not giving up. I think we all feel like giving up at times, but yesterday we closed with "Is anything too hard for the Lord?" (Gen. 18:14) And realized that through the power of our Lord, we can overcome to the end.
The paragraph about the flight attendant's friend caught my eye.
I read a wonderful book called , Stop Dating the Church and Fall in Love with the Family of God. It completely changed my attitude towards my small town church and the people there. You know that He says that when 2 or 3 are gathered together in My name I am with them. Jesus is at my church!
I would also say that Ms. Beth's book, When Godly People do Ungodly Things, was also a wonderful eye-opening look at forgiveness within the body of Christ!
Only a few more days till His Birthday!!! Oh, my 3 little girls are: a wise man (woman - she's 6), a sheep (this is the 2.5 year old) and an angel (4 year old). We're acting out the Gospel lesson at the Christmas Eve service! Oh, the Angel of the Lord is a character! I wish you could all be there to see it!!!
Blessings, Kimber
Oh to be a mouse under that table! Thank you for the encouragement this morning! Merry Christmas Beth.
Thank you. In academic-land, I occasionally hear snide or accusatory remarks made about evangelical Christian leaders - people that I've looked up to for years. Sometimes a Christian witness seems so frail.
I remember the grad students in my French class discussing a paper someone had graded that analysed the Left Behind movies and how bewildered everyone (but me) was by the content. The professor of the class laughed and said, "I think I was 'left behind' years ago." Truly we do not need to travel to find a mission field.
Thank you so much Beth for sharing your weekend with us! If you don't mind, I want to comment anonymously today. It is so easy for me to get cynical. Me. A Christian of 30 years. A Sunday school teacher. etc. etc. You would think that after all these years I would have a softer heart, a more obedient spirit, a more yielding nature, but no. I still have to confess to my Lord over and over that I am just dust and that I need help in this journey of being His child!
I want to confess to YOU that there have even been times when I have felt cynical about you! (Please other Siestas....don't stone me!) I do now ask your forgiveness!
Satan is so happy if he can get us to be jealous of the gifts and onointing God has placed on others. It can happen so quickly that we don't know what hit us. I do NOT want to be that kind of Christian! I want to stay in right relationship with the Lord and with my brothers and sisters in Christ.
Again....thank you Beth for giving us some insight into not only your personal life but the lives of these other great Christian leaders. Sometimes we tend to think that you all have lives of luxury and popularity when sometimes it's just the opposite....with all the business of your lives I'm sure you have times when you feel extremely stressed and lonely. Thank you so much for being willing to displace your life and go and go and go and go to all the avenues where God sends you to bless women (and men) all over the world!
Merry Christmas Friend!
Beth;
Thank you for sharing...I know you must feel drained at times always pouring out to others. I'm glad that this time, you were poured into by your peers whom you respect and love.
I always secretly hope to "run" into you at an airport someday. Come to CA --Southern. The west needs you too!!! PS Please send more updated pics of the dogs with YOU!!!
I was just writing to someone this morning some of your own words from Believing God about being careful to be committed [first and foremost] to JESUS - not just to our commitment! "Delight yourself in the LORD, and He will give you the desires of your heart." Psalm 37:4 - Thanks for reminding us of our common place before the LORD - none of us is worthy without HIM!
May we never lose our PASSION for HIM alone!
Choosing JOY,
Stephanie
Thank you so much for this post!
With tears in my eyes, I have found cynism creeping in on me.
I have been bombarded with those in the flesh saying one thing but conveying something totally opposite with their actions. I have recently found that my desire for God has been drenched by a giantic water tower poured upon me.
But through it all, God keeps reminding me of something you, Beth, some time ago. "Ask God to give you the desire to seek, love and know Him." This is what I am praying to God over and over. I want to know Him more, desire Him more. Not only so others can see Him more but also that I can be like Him more.
Thank you for the encouragement! It was God's perfect timing!
Thank you, Beth. I'm praying for you today.
Leah, yes, yes to your comment, "...no one has the complete roadmap to what God is doing in their lives...we must walk by faith and stay faithful to the last word we heard from the Lord." My heart is encouraged. Thank you.
Oh, how I needed to hear that.
Thank you!
You have built me up Beth. I must say one thing - a funny thought I had while reading this. Your breakfast sounded like one of those, "who would you most like to meet in Heaven" events! I would love to sit around the table with You, Dr. Dobson, Tim LaHaye, and Heather Olford. Sounds like a meeting of the minds (or would that be heart and souls?). Sounds wonderful - never mind that lukewarm coffee!!
I love loving Him with you, too Beth :)
You are just precious.
Thank you so much :)
HUGS,
Kate :)
I believe I will hold onto this post for a good long season. I am encouraged. I have been traveling all over Isaiah these days and my shall we say, tour of chapters 61, 50, and 32 this morning is well followed up by this precious encouraging post. Thank you for this peak into your conversations both at the hotel and on the air plane. Oh to have been a fly on the wall for both. :)
My goodness! As an author groupie, I would have just about died to have been privvy to such a meeting of the minds. How clever God must have been to get you all in the same room with only breakfast on your minds.
God bless you ALL for putting words on paper, in print and on the computer screen. For writing modern day love letters from our God directly to us. To me.
Much love, N@
Dear one, thank you so much for the encouraging words for 'trying'times. I is good to hear there are those we can still look to for spiritual guidance that have not been corrupted by the spotlight (you included) My husband also believes that all preachers are charlatans and the church is full of hypocrites and sometimes I just want to "throw in the towel" so to speak because of his negative attitude, but when I read such uplifting messages like this one, it helps me to continue. I know the enemy would like nothing better for me to quite teaching S.S., going to church AND leading your Bible studies (we have a great little group...going to do Esther in Jan.) Thank you for your dedication to God' Word and all your encouraging words...we love you in Eldorado, Tx
Thank you for that fresh reminder of so many that have served faithfully through the years. What an example to those behind them. . .Oh how I long to be the real thing, but fall short so often. Thanks for your faithful encouragement this morning.
w
Thanks for this wonderful reminder. Love ya, Shelley
Thank you so much for sharing. You're right.....just what I needed. I'm so encouraged.
Shannon
p.s. the word verification to blog today was "coidi" stuck me funny for some reason
Thanks Beth,
It's amazing how quick we can get caught off guard when we are focusing laterally. Yes, cynacism can be so quick to come it! That fleshly focus truly deminishes the vertical relationship our Father so desires.
Sounded like quite a wedding!!
Blessings,
Mare
Good Morning Beth,
It's not so sunny this morning here in the sunshine state;but my heart is so totally warmed as I read your lastest post to us all. Thank you for the words captured with sensible and authentic adoration of our Saviour. This post is by far one of the most meaningful I have read on this blog. I feel your pulse on this sweet time as you were celebrating the marriage of this couple. May God bless you richly these beautiful Christmas days ahead.
Scott & I celebrated 21 years together last Friday. Oh I love him more now than ever,he is my amamzing man. Funny, surprisingly sentimental at the right time, and a blast to be with.
Christmas weddings are wonderful!
May the bride & groom live long and fruitful lives in ministry with each other and Christ.
Merry Christmas Beth!
Deirdre
Your reaction to listening to
Dr. Tim LaHaye talk about end time prophecy, reminds me of my reaction to watching your teaching DVDs on the study of Daniel and the end time prophecies. How rich is the Word of God to provide us with hope for the things to come and those He instructs to enrich our understanding. I read this scripture this morning:
Isaiah 50:4 -The Sovereign LORD has given me an instructed tongue, to know the word that sustains the weary.
He wakens me morning by morning,
wakens my ear to listen like one being taught.
I love that!
Thank you for sharing that - it really inspired and lifted me up this morning!
Amen and Amen -- I'm walking by faith and serving an awesome God! It is for His glory -- not the glory of man.
People will let me down -- and I will let people down. But God, He is faithful and true!
Thanks for the word I needed to hear ... or is that read ... either or both -- I needed it.
Oh the wisdom that sat around that table that day. I would have loved to have been a fly on the wall.
Thank you Beth for the encouragement. It is Monday morning and I have already had negative thoughts toward my pastor husband today, creating a list in my head of all his faults. How long has it been since I looked at him adoringly while he spoke?
Thank you for reminding me that Satan would like nothing more than to create a wedge between us.
Excuse me ladies..I need to get on my knees.
I can't help but be curious to know who got married...it must've been very special people that they would have such saints be a part of their wedding!
Someday in heaven I would LOVE to have lunch at that very same table.
Yes, your words were refreshing. Thanks for sharing.
Kelli
Beth, I had several thoughts run through my head as I read this post. First, I forget that you are a "Christian celebrity." I think that is because you have commited yourself to being the real deal with us. And for that, I thank you.
I also thank you for your contagious love for Jesus and the Word. Finally, thank you for the privilege of praying for you.
Terri
What an incredible time around the table, with so much wisdom. Your blog was quite encouraging today. I needed to hear that. Thank you for your obedience to His word.
Marlo Haft
Beth,
Thank you for that encouraging word, and thanks for sharing all that you did. It did encourage me and lifted me up this Monday morning! Love and blessings to you and I pray you have an especially blessed week!
Love you,
Missy in SC
Thank you Beth for the much needed words of encouragement. I have to say though my first thought while reading your blog was had I just happened to have been wandering through the hotel lobby in Harrisburg that Saturday morning I would have fainted dead away had I happened upon your breakfast bunch. Or at least wondered if I was dreaming seeing three of the most important influences on my life sitting togther over eggs! Holy cow! A little piece of heaven.
Love you!
hey mama beth:)
thank you for your heart and for sharing the heart of these other sweet souls.
i wouldn't call it cynicism, but i have had a bout of NUMBNESS in my life for several months due to some "dead" places in my heart. i was in a really scary car wreck this past Thursday involving 2 other cars and a lot of ice. what should have ended with all 3 drivers in the hospital, turned out with all of us walking away without a scratch. God saved every one of us.
when i got home, i all but pounced on my Bible cause i needed those words to calm my shaky spirit. and in that precious book i found a passage in ezekiel 37 that was talking about dry bones being brought back to life. immediately i knew the Lord was telling me to WAKE UP from this state of numbness that i have been in, and felt His promise to me of waking me out of every grave place in my heart that i thought had died a few months back.
He is so stinkin' good to us. to me. it's an honor to learn how to love Him better with you.
The part about being cynical really hit home. My church has just finished a capital funds campaign to finance a new church building. I fear there have been some very dear friends fall away. Attrition is to be expected when trying to raise almost $1.5 million dollars, but my heart breaks that Satan is rejoicing over just 1 family leaving over money. So the faith-promises we received are bittersweet. Please pray for us, dear siesta's.
Dearest Beth,
This, the third Sunday of Advent, is also known as "REJOICE" Sunday because we always read Isaiah 61 and 1 Thes. 15 this day.
Thank you for sharing these sotries of faith that are indeed reason to rejoice. Oh, He is so faithful. Praise the Lord with me.
Together let us praise his name!
Sister Lynn
I was thinking of this blog over the weekend. I thought for so many years I've aspired to achieve being the "perfect Christian woman" as if one day I'm going to get there if I try hard enough. I thought, one day I'm going to be one of those woman where godliness exudes 24/7. All my faults and failures wouldn't be there as much. Then it hit me. There's nothing for me to "achieve". Each one of us have our faults and failures. No one is a better christian. Just like the christian woman I look up to, every day, like myself, they have to get up and decide to be obedient. They have pain, I have pain. They have struggles, doubts so do I. And that won't change. Not in this life. And so I take comfort that here I am, as I am. And God loves me and will use me just as I am. And thank you fellow sisters for showing me we're all the same, headed all in that one direction together. Amen.
Oh I Praise Him everlastingly, Mrs. Beth, with you.
I would have loved to be the fly on the centerpeice of that table!!!
Dr. Dobson, co-author of Left Behind, you and not least a faithful still active wise woman of Christ? If I had any money I would pay to see any/all of you in a round-table discusion about any/all that God laid on your hearts.
Aside from my admoration, I want to express more seriously... you edify me ...God uses you so often even when I don't post it. I thank God for you and your courage to stand. I pray over and lift you up to our Lord as often as I remember.
And today I will remember you all right now and later in my private time with the Lord. (I'm at work.)
Loving on you in Christ...
Wow. Great post! Beth, you were a light in the darkness for me back in Aug. 2000 when a friend took me semi kicking and screaming to my first in-depth Bible study (David, A Heart Like His). That first day I saw a passion for Christ and authenticity in you like I had never seen in a woman before. My life has completely changed little by little over the past few years and trust me when I say that God used you more than anyone to bring this about. Thank you!!! Love, joy and peace, Dana <><
Well known by many, known by just a few, we all need to sit around with friends and brag about our Jesus. How wonderful to be able to sit with powerful speakers and hear their humility, their love for their Savior and for each other. Wish I could have been a 'bug on the wall'!
Beth,
This was refreshing! Today is my birthday and I needed refreshing perspective. I have promised myself I would age gracefully, and I realize perspective is everything, but being one year away from 40 feels daunting. Yet I see everything the LORD has taught me over the last 9 years of true surrender and I think, "It only gets better". Thank you for sharing snippets of this conversation. You are all standing stones for me that it is true. IN HIM, it only gets better!
Praise His wonderful name. One of our pastor's wrote a great song about our personal interaction with the LORD and then His glory in us. "Set my heart ablaze so that the world may see that you oh Lord, you are HOLY"!!!
Blessings,
Jina
Thank you for this post but thank you even more for your words at the wedding. Your counsel to stop and pray in the middle of an argument and also to say "I'm sorry" constantly were convicting to me. I'm a single friend of the bride's and although I won't face opportunities to practice these in a marriage relationship, your advice is completely transferrable to a all relationships. Thanks once again for allowing yourself to be used of God and ministering to His children...even to guests at a wedding!
Thanks for sharing Beth. So very nice to hear the simple and steadfast authenticity of people who are devoted to and engaged with Jesus through a lifetime.
Love you,
karen :):)
What an uplifting breakfast! Our pastor yesterday spoke of making Christmas purposeful and stressed the point that he believes the Bible to be without error and completely true. (Big 'Amen' from my seat inserted here)! Then he went on to say that he had many, many books written by incredible men and women (he named several) and said that while they are incredible people, they will not be elevated any more than that in his life. "They are as big as they are gonna get". (The message can be heard at www.wcbc.us).
Too often we move our affection and devotion and faith to the precious messenger and forget that they are just as prone to fall as we are. Thank you for the reminder to keep our eyes on Him...that when we lift Him up, He will draw others to Himself.
Dear Beth, Your words brought tears to my eyes. I heard the phrase "long obediance" and was cut to the quick as that expresses perfectly a steadfast lifetime walk with Jesus. And I have been convicted for YEARS we need to PRAY,PRAY,PRAY for our leaders. They are huge targets of Satan and we need to be covering them in prayer. Our local spiritual leaders, those in ministry who feed us-such as yourself-and we really need to be diligent in praying for those who govern over us. "To whom much is given much is required." Thank you for the uplifting testimony of those who grow in their love and service for Jesus. In Jesus' Love Kathy Knoblock
Beth, that is awesome! We've never met, but, I look at you as a "friend", one of the girls. Because you have such a sweet, comfortable spirit that makes everyone who hears you speak, read your books and attend your conferences feel like they know you personally. And then I read something like this, and it reminds me that you are "famous". Ha, ha! It was just funny to me, reading this and thinking, "You go, Beth"! You are my "girlfriend" in Christ, yet you had breakfast with some of the most influental people in the ministry!
Wow, this is so timely! I just spent the weekend "trudging" through some old, deep painful stuff...deep,deep pain from ministry...My parents served many years and the last few were years spent "dodging the enemy's arrows" I was struggling with understanding my mom's pain that is still saw raw after 18 months later.....Healing from this type of pain is a loooong process and some days I am cynical and for a split second the thought of walking away hits....I would never! but the thought still hits me everyonce in awhile! So thankful I read this today!
When an incident or sham goes down in the church, I ask myself now:
When all is said and done, Does this match up with who the LORD is?
Of course the answer to the schemes and failures always ends up being no, it is the people. We are sinful people.
( there is a scene in Steel Magnolias where Julia Roberts says, "we are awful, we are all hateful, awful people," But it's true with out Jesus.)
This makes it easier for me to go to church when the people there aren't acting like I think they ought to. I don't go to church for people, I don't even go to get something out of it.
I go to give my praise.
But I love to hear of those who are really serving and really seeking, Beth you are one of them for me. When I hear you say things like "I want to fall face down on the floor," and I KNOW you mean it - I so badly want to be a woman of that substance.
Thank you LORD for those who show us in example the joy and incredible closeness you offer in a realtionship with you and your son.
In Jesus name,
Amen
wow! how cool! To have stumbled upon that group sitting there in that hotel! I would have probably just stood there with my mouth hanging wide open! HA! Sorry, i know that isn't why you posted this but that is what i kept thinking!!!
Thank You! for your words of Godly wisdom. I needed this !
God Bless,
Susan
Dear Beth - God surely knew that the incident you shared would have one little phrase I needed to hear! The part about Dr. Dobson's father telling his bride that "should their marriage ever cause him mental anguish, he would remain her faithful husband" - just what I needed. Thanks for so many times encouraging us to do the hard thing for His glory and our own good.
In the name of Him who loved us first -
The list of names at your breakfast sounds like one of those lists that people give in those profiles in the local newspaper ... you know ... what's one word to describe you? what's something no one knows about you? who would you invite to your fantasy meal? I love it!! Thanks for the refreshing word today. Merry Christmas to you and all of LPM!
Wow,
How timely is this post. I have just spent a weekend on the church field where I feel like I have been trying to light a fire with wet wood. A whole lot of smoke and not much fire. So needless to say the grumpies and the why I am I here attitude was rearing its ugly head. Thanks for the encouragement.
Wow, what a timely word- and how right you are. Satan tried really hard to create division within the leadership of our church this past week and I praise God for a pastor who seeks God and obeys when given the answer for our situation. As we all pray and seek Him in these last days and trying times it is so easy to be distracted, to take our focus off of our ministry and calling here, and it is at that moment Satan pounces on us. Thank you Beth for reminding us all that we need to be vigilant and guard our hearts, thoughts, and minds in this present hour.
Thank you for being authentic and real with us.
I pray God's riches blessings on you and your family during this holiday season.
Julie
Thanks Beth, I needed this as I've been so cynical lately about Christmas, all because things will be a little lean financially this year. It's all about my pride! I need Jesus so much.
Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things. Philippians 4:8
Love and Blessings, Debbie in Tennessee
Amen Mama Siesta!
Thank you for sharing that word of encouragement!
Although I don't feel cynical (at the moment...I have certainly had my days! :o) this was so refreshing to read! Thank you, Beth, for touching and stirring my spirit and soul once again!
Thanks Beth, for such a nice recap of the weekend you had. I always enjoy reading about what is going on with you and LPM. It is something positive during the day that gives me a boost.
Thanks again,
Oh my ... could I cry anymore? My man is here (cry of joy #1), I'm sleep deprived (cry of exhaustion #2), my last paper is about an hour from being done (cry of relief #3), I've said 'goodbye' to a close circle of godly young women that I have had the privilege of doing life with (cry of grief #4), and I'm about to drive for 38 hours (cry of insanity #5).
Cry #6 - the ringing truth of your post. I love Him so much I do not know what to do with myself...Other than invest in a box of kleenex
Thank you Beth for sharing such special thoughts and times.
I'm refreshed and encouraged.
Beth, Thanks so much for that information. At work I'm really trying to be God's light and need that help every now and again. I love going to church and being fed the word of God. I also love more spending time with GOD myself. It's so awesome. I've learned so much. It's awesome. I love ya'll. Have a great and blessed day. Mary Anne
Amen Siesta Mama I so needed to hear this. God bless and keep you as you enjoy that wonderful group of people you love so much this Christmas.
Thank You,
Celeste
I needed this so badly today! I want to serve Him every day of my life. I have just recently taken on leading our new women's ministry at our little plant church. I am so afraid, so afraid of what people might think of me or how they might judge me. It makes my blood run cold. And yet I know that Jesus has put me here for this purpose at this time and being obedient to Him is exactly what I am supposed to be doing. It is so refreshing to hear of these great leaders of our time who have so profoundly impacted the kingdom. I pray for just a shred of their devotion and commitment...that God will be just as pleased with how I use the gifts He has given me to impact His kingdom. There just are not enough words.
WOW!! Did you say who was getting married? What a lucky (blessed) gal or guy to have that many heavyweights attending (inc. lil ole YOU). Thanks for letting us peep into this sweet, spontaneous moment of time. How good to know of so many notable believers running the marathon race with genuine faith/love intact. You just KNOW it can't be due to human effort, alone...
Just wanted you to know that my husband and I just finished a 8 month study of Living Beyond Ourselves. We are national park volunteers and don't always get to go to church, but I must tell you that God has used this study mightily to refine us and to minister to others. We've been Christians for more than 35 years, but we're always learning of HIS love and lovingkindness.
Beth, I know people tell you this all the time, but I still want to anyway - thank you for loving Jesus as you do and being obedient and for sharing your heart with a hurting world. You and your ministry do make a difference.
Thank you for sharing again something so real and relevant. I've been a Christian for over 40 years and have been on both sides of ministry. Thank you for the warning about becoming cynical...so easy to do. What's amazing is that you don't always recognize it when you are with someone who isn't the "real deal" but boy you can't miss it when you are with someone totally authentic and it blesses the socks off you. I'm so blessed to know that these ones you spoke of so well known... are real and truly the love the God they serve. Thanks, Beth. Blessings!
Debbie
Thank you for sharing your life with us. It's amazing how God touches my heart through your words and experiences.
It's ALL for Jesus! I pray we will remember that this Christmas like never before. Waking up on Christmas morning with songs of praise and a heart full of joy because of the GIFT we have that compares to NOTHING!
All my love to you my dear sister!
Beth,
My heart is close to bursting open after reading your words. This world brings so much discouragement, but we know that God is still in charge and there are those who are sincere in their love of Christ and their willingness to share Him with us. Thanks for the refreshment. love you much.
Amen sister. Amen.
Thanks for letting us eaves drop on that wonderful conversation. I felt as though I had pulled up a chair and was drinking coffee right along with all you. What a blessing.

"God restore us all...as many as will let Him do what it really takes."
Amen, sweet Beth! And that is by far the hardest thing, but the most rewarding if we are willing to do what it takes. Thanks for sharing your exciting weekend with us. I love loving Jesus with you, too!
Love you!
Lindsee
My goodness Beth. When you and I are in heaven together, I'll explain all the in's and out's of the circumstances of this day, but until then, take my word for it, you were the exact and I do mean EXACT encouragement specifically to a situation I have been praying and fasting about today. This very day.
(and I just giggled over the Dr. Dobson comment. Secretly, I refer to him as "Uncle Jim"- in my head only... and because I too, have a child that could stump him good!!)
Beth, how I wish so much for this kind of faith and love. I prayed for many years for God to take an addiction out of my life, to take away the temptation and here I am today facing alot of trouble. How do you do it? I've tried so hard, reading God's word, doing Bible Studies, praying everyday for God to take the temptation away and it didn't happen. Reading this blog is encouraging, but I doubt myself.
Beth,
Your posts are always such an encouragement. Thanks so much.
God's blessings and Merry Christmas to all of you,
Patti Hayes

Thank you Beth, this is just what I needed to hear today. I was doing the dishes this morning when I felt the Lord speak to my heart about a root of bitterness I was allowing to grow over another believer. I've prayed about this today, and then this evening decided to check in and see what was new on the Blog. So here I am...thank you for this reminder.
What a treat to get a glimpse inside your world and sit at a table with such distinguished Christian authors (present "company" definitely included!). What a blessed bride and groom to have you all there.
Your words reminded us all to pray for our Christian leaders and those in the limelight. Thank you for that reminder.
A wonderful example of a person who leads an examplary life in the limelight is Rev. Billy Graham. I highly recommend his book "Just as I Am" to those who have not yet read it.
When I went back to church years ago people who were visiting were asked to stand and the pastor asked others to introduce themselves at the end of the service. There was a beautiful, very well dressed family near myself and kids. Naturally, everyone made a bee-line to the beautiful family and no one came up to us.
"See, church people really are so shallow and hypocritical", I thought. I planned to use that for my excuse to not return. However, I met the pastor that day and he told me about a class for "unequally yoked women" and took my name and number. I figured that nothing would come from it, but that day the Sunday School teacher called and invited me to join them the next Sunday.
God really shook me that day. He showed me that people are imperfect and to NOT JUDGE HIM by the acts of people. I am in church to worship HIM.
Interestingly, in the years that I belonged to that church there was never another service where visitors were asked to stand. I believe that was for me, that He wanted to show me my prejudices and being much too quick to judge.
And isn't wonderful that God meets and loves us just as we are? I thank Him for His mercy that is new every morning and for His grace to show me what I need to learn. I thank you Beth as you are so often instrumental in those lessons of His.
Love,
Kathy
Dearest Beth,
I guess the enemy must be doing the same thing with many of us, because I've been battling cynicism like crazy lately. He is a LIAR!
On the flip side - how fun for you to be sitting with such a neat group of people. Bet the conversation was fascinating. I've been praying for you quite a bit lately -- especially that the Lord would ease your isolation as a result of your position. Shouldn't be surprised that He's answering, but boy, when He does something, He does it big, doesn't He? :-)
Love you, sister!

I almost heard a little "Ellie May at the Met" come out in your story but Ms. Bethie is so worthy of our respect and them some! Always edified by you.

Beth, thank you!! Yes, these stories really encouraged me. The enemy is working hard against me. I am a PW's and I feel burned out to the core at times. Right now is one of those times. I just started your Esther study last week (I am offering at church next month but I also do a sneak peek prior). The study is AWESOME. It is the spiritual food I need right now. I think this study is one of your best. I can not tell you how your story about your 'dark night' made me cry. You described exactly what I have been feeling. Thank you for your honesty. Thank you for being one of the "real" ones. I pray for you often and I will continue to do so. I love you and look forward to meeting you in heaven. :)
Thank you for your post!! I read it with tears running down my cheeks. I am most cynical!! I work in a church. My son works part-time in the same church and most of the people don't like what he is there doing. They aren't afraid to say things that are degrading or mean with me right there! Our family is struggling with whether or not to stay in the church that we have been a part of for the last 30 years. I needed to be reminded that there are real, sincere believers out there! Thank you!
OH I NEEDED THAT!!! :)
Like streams in the desert, thank you Miss Beth
LOL at the weeding. This brings back memories, of when I've heard you say to us single gals that we need to deal with our stuff before we walk down the isle. Sooo. you are right about weeding. :D
Thank you for that post. I got down right bitter over someones actions on Sunday night on the way to church mind you.
God is so faithful! and your words so true. I have many friends and relatives who will no longer go to church because of something that happened in church years ago. They are missing out on the whole purpose, to worship our savior.
Merry Christmas!
p.s. if you would like to see some pictures of snow in south Mississippi( a miricle ) check out my blog.
Beth,
Thank you for having a blog! I just found out about it. Also, thank you for the fruit of the Spirit study! I just finished it with some wonderful ladies. Thank you for writing, for listening to God, and for teaching us and exhorting us to listen, as well!
Sincerely,
Katharine Bond
For those of you familiar with facebook I saw a piece of "flair" (looks like the size of a soccer mom type button you would wear) that said "Be the type of woman that when your feet hit the floor in the morning Satan says ... aww crap she's up again..." Let's give it to him ladies!!
Dearest Beth,
Thanks for this great post! What a thrill to have been at that breakfast table!
I just got home from the last night in our local womens' study on Paul, "To Live is Christ", and I am speechless. I'm Flat Out in AWE of the Apostle! Thank you, from the depths of my heart, for researching the man for us and then presenting him with such passion. I know it has been 11 years since you taped the last session, but I have to say that you were truly inspired. I was in tears. I want to go out and embrace every heartache for His glory. Every thorn in my flesh. It's all for Him, for--as you put it--His supremacy or His sufficiency.
You are affecting lives. Just wanted to tell you that tonight.
God's Blessings on you this day,
Shelly S., Nebraska
Thank you Beth for reminding us of the good and pure servants that still remain. That is actually why I wanted to post today. I know when prayer is needed; the Siestas can be counted on to faithfully hit their knees. So please pray for a local family where a sweet young man is rapidly "losing" his battle with Brain Cancer. He will leave behind a loving wife and three precious children (all under 12). My heart breaks for this family, so I beg of you to lift them up to our everlasting Redeemer and Comforter.
Your heartfelt humble post reminds me of Peter saying to his LORD: "What about them?" You follow ME Peter and I think God was saying that to each of us, wasn't He? Followers. That's what you so beautifully described of Dobson and your breakfast buddies. Followers.
Can I just say, THANK YOU BETH!!
I am dealing w/ cynicism as we speak and those words in the last few paragrapsh were refreshing to my soul and straight from the Father.
It was such a blessing to read about the visit you had with some amazing people at the wedding. I know how you must have felt, because i felt that way with you at the Siesta Fiesta in SA.
You are an encouragement!

That was one of my favorite places to go when I was a girl...the little Harrisburg airport. Growing up in a one stoplight county an hour away, it was something to go and ride the escalators, see the airplanes, and ride home in the car under the lights along the road at night.
It was even more exciting when the toilets started flushing on their own, and my goal eventually became to get all the sinks going at once! I couldn't help but share!
Beth, how I enjoyed this post!
I enjoy all of your posts, but have to say this one is my favorite.
I love soaking in the sweet experience's that you all have to share and enjoy hearing the Lahaye family and Dobson family stories.
What a sweet time you had and what a blessing for you to share.
Yes, now more than ever we need to keep God alive in everything we do. So many times lately I want to say "Lord Come" and He's saying "not yet, Keep moving!"
There is more to do and we need to keep Him alive. So many still need to hear His Word!
Beth, Thank you for showing us your obedience and love for Him and reminding us to not stop loving and trusting Him.
Have a Merry Christmas!
Kim
Oh how we all need refreshing, don't we??
Thank you, Beth!
My mom met you at your last taping in New Orleans. She said you came over to her car and thanked she and her friend for coming. She told you about my blog. I believe she even gave you a page with the blog address. Anyway, you may or may not have visited the blog. It is my story of believing God for something huge... the healing of my daughter. I have never gotten to speak to you, but let me say for so many of us that you have been used in a powerful way in my life. God's voice has spoken to me in so many of your studies...encouragement, hope, peace, courage, redemption, grace, truth, and power. Your authenticity is such a blessing to so many.
Spiritual Mom Beth,
I loved reading your post, the wedding must have been such a blessing to you:) Just the fellowship with other believers was a blessing, I can see:)...I think it is the coolest thing when I see a couple in love being married for a long time too...to be real to the bone and a long, hard road of obedience, with persecution and criticism; but it is worth it to experience Him and be found faithful, right Spiritual Mom Beth? The sufferings of this present time are not worthy to be compared...only God can deliver us from ourselves, the enemy wants to destroy us, but greater is He in us...I am blessed to know that this blog is used by the Lord to encourage you and edify you! HE is Faithful! and we love loving Him with you too, Spiritual Mom Beth. You precious woman, you:) Blessings to you:)

Thank you for this word. I really needed it today. The devil has had me in a "pit" so to speak for the last couple of weeks and reading this has really lifted my spirit! Praise be to our God!! He has done great things!!!
Kinda like sitting at the feet of Ezekial, Daniel, John or James. Wow, modern day "giant men of faith". I know you must have had a fabulous conversation. I am jealous, but with a Godly jealousy. Merry Christmas!!!
Mamma Beth - (I love saying that!)
What do you do when the pastors of your church aren't doing the right thing? Not anything immoral or anything but everything seems directed at lost people and not the rest of us. How do you know what you should do? I hate to leave cause I have so many good friends there but it's really bringing me down!
Oh Beth to be in your shoes and talk to this great man of GOD!! Thank you for sharing with us in details your life as I read I just get all excited like if I were sitting by you and experiencing those events!!
Love you so much and hope to see you in August when you come to Greensboro, NC
Lots of love Jessie Martinez
Beth, thank you for this. I am currently in a discouraged place since one of the leaders of my church was taken down by spite and sin.
God keep you dear one, and if you have time, pray for re-refreshment from the Holy Spirit for those of us who are down right now.
