Tempered Joy
Hey, my dear, dear Sisters! I had the biggest blast with the Siestas who made the trek to San Antonio and missed the rest of you so much. I'm back from a real, live vacation and pecking away at my computer in my office. Star's right here at my feet. It's Labor Day so my beloved staff members are with their families just as they should be. Since I really did take the week off (I usually cheat and still throw work into it somehow but refrained this time), I really needed the day to get a jump on the load I knew would be waiting tomorrow.
I'd have lots of silly things to tell you but my frame of mind is seriously tempered by Gustav. Having lived in Houston for 35 years, I, like anybody half-awake on the Gulf Coast, am highly alert to the constant wave of threats written across the sky from August through October. We find ourselves in a terrible quandary, asking God to cause the storms to bypass our areas but sick at heart to imagine them hitting another. None of us want to lose our homes but none of us want to see others lose theirs either. Of all people on the planet we want spared, surely its the population of New Orleans. Oh, Jesus, especially the poor. And, Lord, our dear Franklin Avenue Baptist and other faithful fellowships like it that have only recently reopened their doors. Have mercy! My heart has been in my throat for the areas devastated by Katrina, many of which have yet to be rebuilt. Let's give highest praise to God that He sucked some of the air and water right out of Gustav's angry lungs. This morning in my quiet time I reminded our gracious Father of His powerful words to us in James 5:16b-18. "The prayer of the righteous man is powerful and effective. Elijah was a man just like us. He prayed earnestly that it would not rain, and it did not rain on the land for three and a half years. Again he prayed, and the heavens gave rain, and the earth produced its crops." Elijah, a man with "like passions as we" prayed a change over the weather. THE WEATHER. And God heard him and said yes. That ought to give us some courage to pray like the same thing could happen today.
Keith and I have been in the wonderful middle of nowhere for a solid week on our cactus land at the edge of the Texas hillcountry. No cell phones. No internet. Just him and me and our two new baby girls, Star and Geli. The most exciting things we had going were watching God paint sunrises and sunsets, cooking on the Old Smokey, dodging rattle snakes, and taking rides on our rigged-for-dirt-roads golf cart with the dogs to admire the wildlife. I read the new Jan Karon novel (I think the name is "Home to Holly Springs") from cover to cover and LOVED IT. Yes, I've read all the Mitford books and am so sad when one ends and another is not out yet. She is one of my favorite all time fiction authors. I want to be her BFF.
On the way home Saturday afternoon, however, we saw the eeriest sight. Keith was asleep at the time and yours truly was driving his big ole blue Ford truck. I even went the speed limit. (Believe it or not, I'm a slow driver. The leading cause of road rage in America, you might recall.) We were going east on Interstate 10 and right around the Luling exit I came over a hill and saw 200+ yellow school buses from Dallas, empty except for the drivers, in the left hand lane traveling lickety-split in a caravan our same direction. A police car led the pack and another had its back. We'd seen several Red Cross emergency vehicles already on our way home but this sight beat all. We knew those school buses were heading either to Houston or New Orleans (it was still up in the air - no pun intended - at that time) for emergency evacuations. I told Keith to wake his hind up and look at a sight he might live the rest of his life and never see again. It was so freaky. And to be one of very few vehicles heading their direction while traffic packed the west-bound lanes was sobering. There was no turning back, though, because Curtis, Amanda, Jackson, and our little Avocado were in Houston and I was going to be where they were or bust. Turned out our fair but hot city would be just to the west of Gustav's fiercest breath. Far better than that, it appeared that New Orleans might not be hit as hard as they were three years ago. Oh, Lord, be her levee.
Anyway, I've looked so forward to saying hello but feel like it's just not the day to be silly. And, oh, could I have been silly. After all, I've been perched on a porch for a week watching my man move the earth all over heck's half acre on his green tractor. About the time I decided to venture out on my own and go for a walk, he popped the clutch and hollered, "Lizabeth, did you bring your snake boots?" Where am I? But I'll just have to save that for another time.
I love you. Gulf Coast girls in particular, let us know how you're fairing through the weather. We are on our knees for you.

Yes, Gulf coast Girls, as I have read some of your blogs today, the tears have flowed and I've gotten all choked up telling my very own Man, what's happening with my dear, sweet, Siesta's.
Welcome back Miss Beth, we all love AND OUR JESUS EVEN MORE because of the path you've paved!
Love,
Yolanda
Praise God that storm was not as bad as it was supposed to be. I asked the Lord to thwart the plan of the evil one and to speak to that storm and dissipate it in the name of Jesus.
And God answered your prayer, Beth. "Lord be the levy for New Orleans." And He was. And He IS!! Amen.
No matter what storms of life come our way, He alone is our refuge and our strong and safe tower.
So glad you had a nice PLAYCATION with your man! Welcome Home.
Roxanne
So glad to hear you're home! We're heading for the Hill Country the middle of Sept while we wait for our home to be completed! I can't wait-it's one of my favorite places. That was our honeymoon trip 36+ years ago and we plan to retrace our tracks.
I was so glad to wake up this morning to see that Gustav had lost some of the wind in his sail. Praying that the storm will continue to weaken and that Hanna will do the same!
Beth, any hints on living among the rattlesnakes! Last time we were at our property in College Station where we're building, we saw deer (love them), wild domestic pigs (would rather not wake up to that on my back porch!), and our daughter in law saw a big rattlesnake on the road! Thankfully, he was dead-within 45 min. he had disappeared! I think it was the smiling buzzard on the side of the road!
Have a great week! I'm sure all your LPM crew will come back well rested!
Thanks again for a fantastic weekend in SA--it was awesome!
Sweet Beth! So glad you had a restful (or snakefilled?) week with your man! I too, loved Jan Karon's latest...Holly Springs is just about an hour from here and it is so fun to read about somewhere you've been.
love you!
Teresa
I was on vacation for the long weekend in South Fork, CO and ended up watching a lot of the Weather Channel and praying over LA and the Houston area.
Glory to God, Gustav was diminished before making landfall, I continue to pray for the storm to keep moving and not sit and flood an area as well as no tornadoes.
Our God is good - all the time!
I was so encouraged by the verses you shared...I absolutely believe in praying about weather conditions, and I will be praying today.
Having lived through Hurricane Floyd (literally being picked up from the parsonage's front lawn in a boat), my heart is with my friends down South this day. Who can fathom the depth and mystery of an ocean's pulse? Only God. Only God.
Last night, I poured my heart out on my blog in thankfulness for the God who mediated his way into my ocean's depth, even as the waves threatened to overtake my sin-sick soul.
My thoughts were sparked by a conversation I had with my 6 year old daughter...
It's called "The Glorious Wonderful of a Heart's Break." How thankful I am that the King chooses to make his music through the likes of this broken and humbled heart.
I love Him more today than yesterday. I love Him for being the water-Walker and wave-Tamer that He IS. I love Him for allowing my life a voice for his eternal purposes. He is the Hope of my heart.
peace~elaine
PS: Love Father Tim and Mitford. I think I married a Father Tim, at least that's what others around here call him.
I will be praying for all in the path of the storm.
And on another note, it is really good to hear from you Beth. You made an even bigger inpression on me at the meet and greet. You just have such a big heart, and it was so nice when you told us what we can pray for you. And gosh the way you looked and Melissa and Amanda when they spoke was beautiful, and to strech you even futher the way you responded to the siesta's. I am just glad God picked you for that plan/path he has you on and you said yes.
Beth,
I pray you're rested and refilled and I'll join you in praying for God's staying hand on the weather.
~Bethany
I have been praying for those on the Gulf Coast as well. I keep remembering Jesus calming the storm on the lake with the words "Peace, be still." I am praying that He will calm the winds and waves again.
I am also praying for you, Beth, as you prepare for Deeper Still in Las Vegas. As I prayed on Saturday, the Holy Spirit brought me to a standstill. I sensed Him speaking to me to pray Isaiah 61:1-4 for the Deeper Still event. I will continue to do so. I know He is faithful.
I'm glad it looks like Houston will miss most of the Gustav excitement. Where I am, we're expecting wind and heavy rains the next couple of days! I continue to pray they will dissipate!
aren't snake boots a part of the full armour of God?
All you gulf coast girls I am praying for your safety and that the storm would weaken and only dump much needed rain. We love you all .
John Deere is my husband's bff. Going green takes on a whole new meaning for us. So glad you got away for real hill country rest. My heart is overflowing for New Orleans and Baton Rouge, right now, as I listen to the news, and the rest of the Gulf Coast. May God be our refuge and very present help. Sure loved Siestaville, btw. Love, Annette
Oh Beth, you are brave. I would never vacation anywhere where I had to take snake boots! :)
Waiting out Gustav...got the whole family playing various board games, and may even get Anne of Avonlea out later if the power holds.
I am thinking we will excape by the hair of our chinning chin chin, but better safe than sorry.
Prayers and love to those closer to the storm...

Oh Beth, it was so good to hear from you today. Mike and I have been in much prayer for the families who are in the pathway of Gustav. Our prayer has been that God would calm the storm and spare innocent lives. My husband, Mike, said God is answering our prayers. Gustav hit land as a catagory 2 instead of the predicted catagory 4. Praise You, Lord, for hearing and responding to the prayers of Your people.
Evacuees started arriving yesterday. First Baptist Church in West Memphis is housing 100 and my church FBC in Marion, Arkansas is presently hosting 81. Those I've spoken to are grateful for a place to stay but most are emotionally beaten down. Siestas, lets stay on our knees for all who are affected by this storm. May our great Comforter meet their every need. All hotels and emergency shelters are packed as far north as Cape Girardeau, MO.
I am so glad you, Keith, and the pups had fun on your vacation and you made it back home safely.
Love you,
Mary
Welcome home! It was such a pleasure to see and spend time with you and your girls in SA - that weekend is not something any of us Siestas will soon forget! I also don't think I've ever posted here, that through your blog I ordered a prayer journal from Debbie Williams, and then, through a set of "it could only be God" circumstances, we ended up at the conference and the Siesta Fiesta together! It was an amazing time! You just never know what off-hand comment you make on the blog will have an effect you never imagined!
I'm also praising God with you that Gustav lost some steam and then hit west of New Orleans. Will continue praying for all those who have and will suffer damages.
So much love to you and yours,
Melinda
It is hard to imagine another storm hitting that same area again. Like you, Beth, I find it hard to know how to pray. We are safe here in S.A. and the kids just moved from Houston to Dallas. I'm thankful, but I found myself asking the Lord to just somehow make that storm diminish and not cause great harm to anyone.
Thank you for the way you shared your heart and your time at the Siesta Fiesta. For this grandmother of seven, it was a wonderful time of refreshment and renewal and just flat out fun!
I'm glad you and Keith had time to get away. It sounds like a fun time - rattle snakes and all.
Beth, I am so thrilled to find your blog! Your God-given wisdom and words always speak to me....talk about wanting to be someone's BFF! I live in Starkville, Mississippi but have friends and family who have fled Gustav's path. Thank you so much for your prayers on their behalf. I sure hope Gustav doesn't cause problems for your fair city, as well. Welcome back and welcome to my blog roll!
In His grip,
Lauren
Hello Beth and Siestas :)
It's a slow "comment" day, I see. Gals must not be laboring on their keyboards this Labor Day.
Deep thoughts, reflecting on Gustav, Katrina: Living in SoCal, we live with the uncertainty of earthquakes, but I always wonder why I'm here, in cushy SoCal, while others are in areas of the country who consistently are affected by hurricanes. Then I think, why am I in the cushy United States of America, while others living in abject poverty in third world countries. THEN I think, why/how am I a Christian, so certain of God's Truth while others are lost...I could go on and on. I think TOO much, but it always brings me back to a place of thanksgiving and I just marvel at God's mercy on me - that I can in turn share with others.
Anyway...beside that I just wanted to say to Beth, that as much as I desire to be married (45 and never been), I don't know if I could be in a relationship where "snake boots" are required residents of my closet :) :) :) But then again...
BTW - I'm going through Breaking Free for the first time...wow. Enough said!
Welcome Home Beth...so glad you and your man had a wonderful vacation! My mother also loves Jan Karon and the mitford series! I know how you feel about the kitchen, but did you know there is a cookbook with all the recipes from the series? I thought maybe Melissa would enjoy cooking some of the recipes for you. My mother's fav out of the cookbook is Esther's orange marmalade cake..."It's to die for!"
I echo your prayers for our coastal southern siesta's and their families!
Missed the siesta...just had a baby girl but I rejoiced with you all reading about it and enjoyed all the pics!
Love you too!
Laura Beth
I am safely tucked away in Atlanta (Georgia) but I am praying for those of you in Gustav's path. I'm so thankful that he turned out to be more of a gentleman than we thought. Stay safe and know you are loved.
Jessica
Beth,
I am so glad that you had such a restfilled vacation. There are no better sunrises and sunset than West Texas.
I do have a couple of questions for you.
Where in the world did you find snakeboots small enough to fit you?
Have the "girls" had their snake shots yet? Ask your vet mine gets her's along with rabies once a year.
I am praising God over Gustav's loss in strength. And for the safety of all our brothers and sisters in Christ, and that this will be a very fruitful time of ministry for those whom do not yet know Christ as their savior.
Glad you are back and rested.
I am praying that God will prepare you, Pricilla, and Kay for Deeper Still this weekend. Oh to be with you three sevrants. I pray that as you three pour yourselves out on these men and women, that God will pour His Holy Spirit into you. May Jesus be seen in Las Vagas like never before.
In Him,
Sallye
Welcome Home Bethie Dear!!!
So glad to get on here this afternoon and find a post from you. I am so praying for everyone on the gulf coast. I will forever be impacted by the pictures that my brother bought home from serving 3 months in Mississippi on relief and clean up (he's a firefighter) following the devastation of Katrina. Your scriptures about Elijah praying for the weather is so important for me to know...thank you for bringing that to my attention. I've been praying.
As for the rattlesnakes....yeah, not too fun! My brother killed 3 last week up at his place and 1 or 2 up at my parents place. Scary, especially with my 2 1/2 yr. old nephew running around.
Seems like a lot of us are in the same spirit. I have Mule Day to blog about for Pete's sake, but today wasn't the one to talk about such things when many of my dear sisters are packed in vehicles unsure of what they'll find when they return home.
So glad you had a restful vacation. Looking forward to silly times again.
Loved you so much in San Antonio! Thrilled I got to say hello to you and your girls even if it was from the bleachers. :)
Been through a few storms myself on the Carolina coast before moving to Colorado. I know what its like. Started praying for all in the Gulf coast last night and was glad to see all the preparations being done for you.
Beth glad you enjoyed your porch vacation, sometimes those are the best. Be safe ya all!!!!!
Glad you have 2 new furry friends to travel with you. My dear friend Sadie, a 13 yr-old collie-shephard mix, absolutely gorgeous girl, has cancer, and I know I'm going to lose her soon. She seems to be the only real friend I have right now, as God seems so distant lately. I'm praying that He will spare her from alot of pain.
Glad you had a restful week.
Lois
Thank you so much for your encouragement in how to pray during something like this. I've always felt the same way about praying for a hurricane to go somewhere else (those folks in somewhere else wouldn't be too pleased). Good to "hear your voice" again. Glad you're back.
Hoping for a just a little rain in Houston,
Gena
The Journey Continues ~
Blessings Keith & Beth on
Labor Day!

Thank God, so far it's not as bad as it could have been! We're still praying...
Glad you're back home safe and sound! While I've sure missed you and your wit (as I'm sure we all have), our hearts and minds are with the Gustav folks. I'm so glad God took it's wind and rain down a couple of notches!
My husband is in Savannah, GA area right now and it looks like there might be 2 hurricanes headed straight for that part of the coast!!
Thank you, Lord, for giving Mama Siesta a rest...with hubby and puppies...You rejuvenate like no other, and we're especially thankful she didn't get too close to a rattler.
I echo all the previous day's prayers again today as Gustav moves on and Hanna begins to bear down. We on the east coast are now putting our energies in her directions and are eager to be blessed with your taking the "wind out of her sais"
Oh, I have been praying...my cousin is just near Lafayette. Our families in E. Texas...
Prayed for you and Keith, too...every single day, I asked God to refresh and restore you--to delight you, too!
I wonder, what do you cook over that stove out there in the country? Also, were you surprised by the ending of "Home to Holly Springs?" Oh, I was! Can't wait to get my hands on the next one. Colorado and Jan Karon go together so very well in the winter time.
I've got thanks coming in the mail your way tomorrow. Though, I cannot say thanks enough. Love you!
I am praying for all of you.I just wish they all would go away.now there is another one.So I am praying for all of America. For many thigns to many storms, fries & everyting else.So all keep us informed from all the thigns thats going own.God be with you & many blessing each day to you & yours till your in our Lords hands.
Hi Beth, I missed you and am so happy that you are back now.
Next Monday night, we are starting Living Beyond Yourself. I am looking forward to digging into the fruits of the Spirit and learning more. Can't wait to see your hairdo on the video. My church was one of the host churches for the Aug 1-2 Simulcast (Louisville). What a blessing that was - treasure the wonder!
I, too, have been praying that God would weaken Gustav. He is able!!
Love,
Rhonda
Kalamazoo, Michigan
Thank you Beth for putting to words our thoughts and prayers for those in the Gulf. May the Lord continue to tenderly care for them.
So glad for you and Keith (and puppies) to have had such a relaxing week together.
Love to all,
April
Beth: Glad you are home sister and that you truly rested, retreated, and READ from my 2nd favorite author (you know who is first!) I love, love, love Jan Karon books. I've been known to "save mine" and read them s-lo-w-l-y so the story will last longer. Weren't the twists in Home to Holly Springs sooooo good? I love Jan Karon too. Glad to hear you're a Mitford fan - I should have known. I've been thinking about starting over and reading through them all again.
Have you ever read any of Eugenia Price's books? She was a believer who lived on St. Simons Island, GA, for many years before she died. She wrote novels on Georgia history using true historical characters after much research. Her Savannah series is wonderful, and she weaves the Gospel in every book.
We too have been glued to the TV and praying for the folks in the path of Gustav. Thank you Lord that it was not as horrendous as anticipated. Praying that the next hurricane following (Helen?) will spare our beautiful city of Savannah here in Georgia as well...
The Siesta Fiesta was marvelous and us "Georgia Siestas" are going to be getting together soon for a mini-fiesta.
Love & Prayers,
Georgia Jan
Beth, Thank you for your words. Praying for your family and everyone effected by this storm. Stay well....
So glad you were able to get away for a week with no distractions!
Praying for you and the rest of those who live along/ or near the Gulf Coast!
Beth, it was such a joy to run into you and help find your starbucks and cell phone charger! Did it work? I would have loved to have been able to sit and visit and tell you all the Lord has done in my life. He particularly used Patriarchs. I would love to tell you about it! Did you try the Mexican food restaurants I suggested? I saw Travis at church and the pics of the cabinets he built. Sweet! He said that he had invited you to church but that you had to head home. My husband preached on Sunday and boy would he have been nervous if you had been in the house! Maybe next time if I ever get to run into you, we could have some time? My 9 year old son did not believe me when I told him that I had seen you and actually talked to you. He wanted "proof" that I had really seen you. He made me laugh! He finally decided he would just believe me since I could not give him any proof. He thinks you are my best friend.
God is so good. Way back in May, my mother decided to take a trip to the NorthEast to see me and my new hubby. Little did she or I know at the time, that God had GREAT evacuation plans for her since she lives right in the path of Gustav. She has had a hard time enjoying herself while knowing that our friends and family are back home, but I am thankful that God spared me some anxious moments thinking about her safety.
Praising God,
Jen
I hate to leave anyone out who wasn't able to join us in SA, but I have to tell you how much I enjoyed our time. It was NOT by chance that we all met each other via this blog! I loved stopping at Buc-ees on the way to SA (and on the way back) from Houston with my friend, Annette! My husband loved the Beef Jerky I brought him! I can't imagine the sight of those buses. Glad you were able to enjoy your much needed vacation. I hope you feel rested! By the way, your daughters are absolutely the sweetest girls around! Glad they are my "Peeps"! Too cute!
Love you,
Angie xoxo
Beth, your amazing! im praying for any one and every one afected buy the hurricane!
Beth, I'm sure the snake boots would look so cute on you, but I like these much more:
http://bootconnection.com/images/15758P--re.jpg
I wore them to Santonio and would have shown them to you if we'd have had time to chat about important things...like boots! You know heiresses need a really good pair of boots!
Welcome home and it was grand taveling clear to Texas to meet you at the Siesta Fiesta. Wish we'd had more time!
Gulf coast ladies yes!! Please keep us updated on how things are going over where you live. Here in California I have been on my knees and praying for everyone. Especially New Orleans. My heart broke for you. I have never been through a hurrican...we have earthquakes over here in Cali (not fun ha!)
Welcome back Beth! I am so glad I stumpled upon this blog of yours. It is refreshing and fun.
Have a wonderful Labor Day.
Hello Ms. Beth, so glad you and your man had a great vacation it is always so good to just get away. I am joining you and all the other siestas in prayer for the gulf coast and now for the east coast as Hannah seems to make her way. I truly look forward to the stories you have for all of us about your adventure.
Becky
Attalla, AL
Glad you are back...and had a sweet time of rest and refreshing.
Praying for those on the Gulf Coast.
Glad you're back and glad you had a restful vacation....snakes & all!
We are praying for everyone affected by Gustav. Like everyone else, we are so glad it lessened in strength. PTL!
Getting ready to send "Living Beyond Yourself" to a missionary in the Domincan Republic who would like to do the study with others but couldn't afford to buy the kit, so we are donating our church's copy...pray that they will be as blest by the study as we were!
Will pray for your week back to work - know how much work can pile up when you are gone for that long!
I'm here in northwest Florida -
we did not get the brunt of the storm here (and we, too, are thankful, but praying for those to our west). Things were very mild here today, and I pray that conditions rapidly improve all across the Coast.
Beth, loved the pics from San Antonio. Our prayers are with the Gulf Coast girls (and everyone else). One of these days, I plan to be in your audience!!!
Love & Prayers
Betty Shoaf
definitely on our knees for you... ALL.
Love you Beth, glad you had such a time with your "supper" man...
Praying in agreement and thanking God for taking a bit of the wind out of Gustav. Praying for those in the path of Hannah and Ike as well. God's blessing, speed and favor to all.
We are awaiting the call to see if we will be hosting a family in our home who has been evacuated.
Blessings.
God spear us this time. Thank y ou Jesus. i live in OceanSprings ms next to biloxi ms. we didn't even lose power. i had a house full but was so thankful to share with other. no matter what the out come could have been i still say i am TOO BLESSED TO BE STRESSED.
In His service, Jeanette
Thanks for praying! My folks are without power and have trees down in Baton Rouge, but otherwise okay (with a New Orleans cousin who lost everything in Katrina safely tucked in with them). Meanwhile, in North Louisiana, we were furiously harvesting corn ahead of the storm - friends and neighbors were pitching in and helping one another. We didn't get it all, but we're thankful to God for every kernel we got. Now we're snuggled in, lights blinking off and on, and waiting it out!
I'm so wierd about the Mitford books - I hate to start one, because I'm so sad when it's over. So I put it off as long as I can stand it!
Glad you had a little break, Beth. We're about to start Stepping Up in a couple of weeks and looking forward to it!
I too am rejoicing with ya'll that the "bluster fell out of the blow" this time around. Our dear Mimi, & Papa-John live in DeRidder La - so we called this morning to check on them. They were prepared & ready, with a house full of family, & just a big mess - Mimi is loving it!! So is Mathilda...While I was checking on the family, my enthusiastic boy was desprate for news of Mathilda. She is a true Heinz 57 - a bit of every puppy color you've ever seen, all blended together. It ends up looking sorta brown, just like your kids watercolor paints after a new masterpiece. She has a barrel body, skinny legs, & spread out feet, the up-down kind of ears, & Mathilda doesn't walk, she wiggles... a beauty she is not, but to this 7 year old, she is the bomb! Oh the wonder of little boy priorities :)!!
All is well for Mimi, Papaw John, & Mathilda - & we praise GOD. HE is so good - here is the precious part though....if things had been different, & even if all was lost, HE would still be good, & worthy of all my praise!!
I was listening Beth - HE holds all our lots! & My boundry lines are pleasing, & beautiful.
What an Inheritance!!
I so enjoyed the fiesta with ya'll!
& praise HIM for your time of rest -
Mistie Woods - Abilene
I have a friend who lives in the Camen Islands who prays the hurricanes into the water. She does not want them to hit her but does not want them to hit anyone else either!
I'm glad you had a good vacation. I knew you had to be away from computers else you would have had to comment on Melissa's chili caper! That was funny Beth. And then Amanda was adorable with the disappearing comments and erasing comments... Anyway... Glad your home.
Praying the hurricanes into the water,
Judy
I'm a So. California girl...haven't got a clue what snake boots are for. Are they made out of real snakeskin? I bet that really makes the snakes scare off quickly!
Welcome home! So glad you got some time to rest and be still and hang with your man and little girls. Though I could do without the snakes. I think that would keep me home.
Joanne
So glad you had a chance to sit back and relax a while. Goodness knows you've earned it. And something tells me you're not much of a sit-back-and-do-nothing kinda gal.
I evacuated from Mandeville, LA with my kids and the dog (a yellow lab named Beau), and we're now at my parents' house in FL. Please pray for my husband who had to stay behind. He's a Navy man and had to stay with his ship which is tied to the pier along the MS river in New Orleans. I heard from him this morning and he said it was a little scary, but they were doing fine. I just want to hear his voice again to reassure me he's ok. I'm praying he'll call soon. I've been praying God's hand of protection over him all weekend.
Thanks so much for your prayers. I'm anxious to get home to check on my house and see my sweet husband again.
You are so good to remind us to pray ABOUT EVERYTHING--even weather-- and w/out ceasing. I love being reminded about times when God responded to His peoples' prayers. What a sight you saw w/ the school bus caravan...wow! You got the precious opportunity to pray for each passenger before they boarded the buses. Glad you had a great vacation and are home in Houston as you should be!
Praying for all on the coast, Jill
"Snake boots"--you are a braver woman than I.
Beth,
So glad you had a restful vacation filled with many memories... looking forward to the posts that will follow! :)
Prayers for all who are in Gustav's path. I am so thankful that he lost some of his punch as he moved ashore. Here in Indiana it's the tornados we have to worry about. I have seen too much devastation from the powerful winds a twister brings. However in the aftermath we are reminded that God is with us and keeps His promises. It also reminds me just how powerful He is. More powerful than a hurricane, a tornado or any other storm of nature. He is our Almighty!
I too love Jan Karon... don't you just wish you visit Mitford?!?!
WHAT a week you have had, missy!
Sounds like a good time with your sweetie, for sure!
I know that San Antonio was such a blessing....I have read all the comments and looked at the photos.Wish I could have been there because SA is where I found the Lord many years ago! So it is sacred ground to me!
God Bless you Beth and thank you for the wonderful work you do to further His kingdom!
In Joy,

Beth, have you read any of Jamie Langston Turner's books? They were a great find when I had exhausted Jan Karon's Mitford books. :o)
I am in Webster, which is south of Houston. I have been praying for all us Gulf Coast girls and families. It looks like we will get some rain tomorrow. We have some wind now. But I know it will all be ok. Thank you Jesus for taking most of the huff and puff out of this storm.

star...:)
It's good to have you back! I'm so glad God gave you the rest you needed and time with the hubby and dogs. :)
Thank you for the word about Elijah. Sometimes it's hard to realize that God wants you to come before Him for everything, whether it be a huge, devestating hurricane or a little bitty everday problem. I think we often forget just how much prayer matters to Him and how He answers them.
The people in the path of Gustav definitely have my prayers! And pray that the 2 others heading this way (GA) will provide much needed rain and little more!
In His Love,
~Sarah
Hi everyone...
We are praying for all our gulf coast girls!! My heart is really tendered to everyone on this one.
Welcome back Mama Siesta!! I had a fabulous time in SA. The memories and friendships were straight from God Himself. It was so beautiful, fun, funny, and special.
Have a blessed week!

The worst we will see of Gustav is going through Lake Charles right now....we are 4 of 10 people left here; everyone is still freaked out after Rita passed through 3 years ago. We chose not to evacuate after monitoring the forecast path closely. This is the least of the storms's fury which verifies that any closer to the eye of the storm would be a very bad place to be. We still have power but school is out until Friday....oh, can we use prayer about that!:) We are all a bit stir crazy. We had an awesome church service yesterday (before mandatory evac) about rejoicing in the Lord at ALL times which I have done all day. I sure couldn't ask the Lord for the thing to land on any one else; I love Him sooo much and am grateful for the cyber fellowship, especially on a day like today!
I'm a first grade teacher in Katy and for this Labor Day weekend, I went to visit my folks just south of San Antonio. We watched the weather constantly to see what was going on. As I came back today, I got a taste of what you saw outside of Luling. From Seguin to Brookeshire, I saw 33 evacuee buses and 201 ambulances. Half way back, I realized that there were 15 passenger vans coming up the interstate too. And that's AFTER everyone else stopped in Houston. Talk about a three hour lesson in humility and prayer! Everytime a caravan of ambulances came our way, all I could think about was the individual in that vehicle. They were sick or hurt, leaving their home, and they have no clue when or if they will they will go home. On top of that, there was no one with them but the EMTs in the vehicle. I don't think my throat has ever held a lump that long! I take so much for granted!
Welcome back to our side of town, sweet Beth. Glad you had a peaceful, refreshing vacation.
There is no doubt God took the top off the storm in the Gulf. I praise Him for the many times He takes the top off my storms too!
Praise the Lord the storm has been downgraded to a category one. God is so good. Beth , im so glad you had a good restful vacation. Can't wait to hear your funny stories. I think your absolutely hilarious. My husband has heard me talk about you and your shananiguns(is that even spelled right?) and he even thinks your funny. My daughter came with me to the Louisville conference and she, age 21 thinks your funny too. God surely used you to grab her attention. She is 21 and a senior in college. Drifted a bit. You kept her attention. Several times i looked at her out of the corner of my eye, she was so engaged in what you were saying her jaw was dropped and she had this intense look in her eye. I know your thinking, how did you see all of that from the corner of my eye. Well you know the saying, we mothers have eyes all over our heads. Sometimes I would stop singing just to hear her sing. God Bless you for your ministry. I simply CANNOT wait for the Esther study to come out. It is indeed one of my favoite old testament bibe stories, for such a time as this.
I have no doubts that God hears those prayers about the weather. It was in early April about 15 yrs ago. We were living in Wichita Ks. We were at our childrens school for a school carnival. There was about 500 children and parents in the building, when the tornado sirens went off. We headed into the hallways for safty and of course the men headed outside for a look. Almost immediatly my husband came back into the building with a pale look on his face. He Said it is a hugh tornado and it is heading right towards the school. We grabbed our boys, and sat in the hallway and just started to pray. Within about 10 minutes the sirens stopped and the sun came out. We then found out that it had hit the neighborhood just to the south of the school. We were told later that as the tornado was approaching the school it dipped south for a short time then proceeded back on its origianl path. It went around the school! It was an F4 tornado. It destoyed most of the neighborhood surrounding the school. but thankfully few lives were lost because most of the people werent at home but were in the school!
wow but you said the simplest yet all-encompassing prayer, "Lord, be their levee." Standing in agreement with you for them!
Oh, I can't wait for Gustav to be gone. One of my dearest friends on the planet lives on the Alabama coast where they have dealt with terrible wind and tornadoes all day long.
So good to hear from you after your vacation. We all had such a fabulous time at the Siesta Fiesta!
Love you too...
we were praying for them sooo, too, and my little girl was really having a hard time last night not being afraid that "that world" was going to be in trouble. one of her friends from greensboro, nc (where we are) just moved back down to new orleans this summer. i told her about being able to pray for her and whether or not it was too much info, she did. and today we praised God for answering our prayers and keeping their city safe. it's pretty amazing that it truly did slow down! prayers of a righteous man (and woman, and CHILD if i do say so myself!) availeth much!
My husband and I were in the Hill Country this weekend for our first official "empty-nest" trip and we were going in to have breakfast at Cracker Barrel in Kerrville. When we walked in to be seated the whole restaurant was filled, except for us and about 3 families with Orange County,CA firefighters and FEMA teams. All in their blue fatigues. What an impressive sight. They had been on the bus since Friday at 3 and very heading straight thru to Houston to the command center. As of Sunday morning they weren't sure where they would be going. One of the K-9 handlers stopped and talked to us for just a moment. Brave men and women!!! We stopped right then and prayed not just for the thousands of people who would be affected, but the courageous people heading straight in to the storm to offer safety, protection and assistance. God Bless them!
Beverly in Odessa
p.s. glad you and Keith made it back home safely.
I am so glad you had a restful time with your man! I am one of your "Raleigh Girls!" and was blessed to be in San Antonio for the weekend with my sister and our family. What a blessing we received at the conference and at Siesta Fiesta! I just ordered ESTHER for the group I lead and I can't wait!!
Thanks for checking in with us, Beth. :) I'm SO glad you and Keith got some time away to relax and just be with each other, your puppies, and God's beautiful creation. New Orleans has been heavy on my heart and mind today, as well. Praying along with y'all that God will have mercy!
At the right time, do let us know some fun things about your vacation. Glad y'all got back home safely. :)
Love,
Missy in SC
My heart has been heavy with a lot of things this week...from the hurricanes...to Caylee Anthony...to some personal stuff...so I KNOW what you mean Beth!
But since we try to be " women after God's own heart." my guess would be that His heart must be heavy too...
Love you!
I know this is just a tiny detail in your story, but I had to squeal when I read of the exit to LULING! My dad grew up in Luling and I spent many a road trip there as a child and can picture just where you are talking about. If you actually drive into Luling it has a very particular smell - oil they say.
Oh, I miss my grandparents just thinking about it.
Thank you for that! I bet that was a sight to see.
Hope you enjoyed your unplugged vacation.
Praying for you Gulf Coasters tonight.
welcome home! :)
Since I can't say it's good to 'see' you again, I'll say it's good to 'read' you again!
As a gulf coast Fl girl for 37 years (who last year was transplanted to Ga away from all my family) I can tell you, I've been glued to Fox News and The Weather Channel since Fay was here a week ago.
That storm ruined my mom's backyard -- $8K to fix her pool so she's decided to just fill it in rather than repair it..
But that's nothing compared to, during Fay's 28 inch downpour last week, a little boy from home, who had just turned 13, slipped and fell near his home into a drainage ditch, sucking him into it. Even though he was on the local swim team, the suction was too much for him and he drowned. PlEASE siestas, be praying for his mom, dad, and little sister (his name was Mac). They are friends of a friend, and I've heard they are very angry with God right now (I can only know I would be too, I'm sure). I tear up at even the thought of losing my precious babies. I hurt for them.
I'm standing with you all and Mama Beth, for this current storm and the ones behind it to spare those precious people in their paths.
I love you all,
Lavonda
Oh yes, How we are praying for all of them. I have just arrived home from a getaway on the Gulf Coast, closer to Destin, FL. All we saw was an ocean surge, absolutely fasicinating to watch those strong waves crash. And I thought to myself, if it is this bad here, think of all the others in harm's way. I am so thankful to hear that Gustav has not been as bad as Katrina. As I was driving home north, I passed countless fuel trucks, power trucks, and relief vehicles headed south. Thank you to all of the brave people headed there now to help out. We are praying for all of you.
wendy
Oh I know your Joy must be tempered! You all have been on my heart! I have been praying... and I will continue too!
So thankful you had a much needed vacation! We had a blast in San Antonio! Thank you for being so gracious to us! You all were just precious! So much fun!
My Mom just adores Jan too! She really is my Mom's friend!
Love you all!
Emmy : )
Dear Beth,
Thanks for checking in with your Siestas. I was so sad I wasn't in San Antonio but I am so happy you all had a great time. We,too, are praying for those threatened by Gustav. One of our sisters parents had to evacuate and they are here with us now.
Anyway - just wanted to let you know you are loved - serious or silly - you are loved!
Sister Lynn
If you are Jan's BFF, then you have to be my BFF, too! My Granny got me hooked on Father Tim when I was in junior high! I just love a good series where you can fall in love with the characters!
We've got some evacuees here in Austin and we are praying for those levees to keep holding!
It is the same in my heart as I watched with much anticipation how this storm was going to turn out. Knowing that our Heavenly Father is absolutely good and trustworthy, yet praying for His mercy in this situation. My heart just breaks for those who have had to evacuate and try to save their most important things....I'm thinking they probably have a much better idea of what is truly important...don't you think? Glad you had a great vacation! Glad you made it home. Fondly, Jackie Sue
Hey my sweet sister Beth,
I am a Gulf Coast Girl, from Daphne, AL. ---on the Eastern Shore of Mobile Bay. We were very blessed and protected today. I spent the day watching the weather channel, recovering from the preparation "just in case" Gustav made a funny little hop like those hurricanes sometimes do.
I can imagine all those school buses and emergency vehicles were quite an amazing sight and would certainly remind you to start praying if you weren't already.
I am SO VERY GLAD you had some time away and so very glad you made it safely home.
Love,
Leisl
Well, here in East Texas, we are gratefully aware that most of the predicted winds and rain have passed us by. We've been praying for those in our area who were hit so badly by Rita (our farm included). The Lord graciously spared us from Gustav. Our church is open again as a Red Cross shelter and will remain open until Thursday with Louisiana residents. I am so thankful for our church family who have given so much loving care to total strangers. Thank you LPM gang and Sweet Siestas for praying. Truly, our God is an awesome God.
Dry and Delighted,
Paulette
Beth,
I am glad you took a real vacation without work! SA was a blessing I will never forget! Your daughters are amazing young women! And I am still digesting our inheritance lesson!
I have been in prayer for those on the Gulf Coast as well as all those who packed up and evacuated. I am thankful that Gustav weakened before it hit and I pray the residents can return home soon!
Blessings
Michelle
I hope y'all had time to stop in at or were you coming out of Buc-ee's when you saw the buses?
Anyway, thanks for the "Lone Star" LPL!
Welcome back. Glad you actually took a well deserved vacation. Had a blast in San Antonio and loved the Siesta Fiesta. Thank you for a wonderful time full of His blessings.
Forever His,
Lawan Rivera
Phil 4:8
To all of you who have prayed and are praying for the "Gulf Coast Girls" and our families - thank you!!! Our family is in Arkansas until we are allowed to go back home. (We've had a great time here.) It feels SO awesome to know that people are praying everywhere. What an incredible group you are, Siestas!!!
Beth, I love how you said "let the Lord be her levy." Isn't it amazing that God is EVERYTHING to us!!?
To those of you in the storms wake, my prayers are for you. May God's mercy pour on you in abundance. Hide in the shadow of His wings. He alone is our refuge and our strong tower.
And Beth, I am a Mitford nut too. I LOVED "Home to Holly Springs." Definitely my favorite fiction author of all time!
Love, Jillian (PS my old screen name was JILLIAN - do you call that a screen name - it's changed now but I'm the same person :)
You sweet thing...I wanna hear about the boots when this is all over. As for Gustav, my husband is down there right outside Baton Rouge where the winds were whipping around trees and powerlines at 75 mph this morning. He's reported in several times that he is ok in his company doublewide on company property...though a tree split in two and one part landed on the roof he still thinks there's no leaks...yet. He did say if you saw someone being rescued on tv from their roof with their speedos on and with the sign "surf's up" it would be him! (He's still has a sense of humor.)I've watched Fox news all day and haven't seen him. I thought he'd be in his superman garb in spandex no less since he's the one and only lonely employee who stayed back and is watching the company. He refused to leave so there you have it. He did say BR has suffered more damage this time than Katrina because of high winds. Thank you to all for their prayers!
I by the way live in NC with our son while he travels (commutes) back and forth.
Wished I could be at the first annual Siesta Fiesta but know you had a blast from the cute pics Rich took!
BFF!
I face that same struggle any time I'm praying about the weather. We're far enough inland that hurricanes aren't much of a threat, but man the tornadoes sure are. Sometimes I'm stuck on what exactly I should pray in times like that. I was excited to see that the storm lessened before it hit shore.
Beth,
Wondering if you have read "The Shack" and what your take is on this book. Do you recommend it?
Praying still for the Gulf coast. Thank God He hears our prayers.
I'm glad you're back and had plenty of rest.
Engrafted by His Grace-
Shonda
I live just outside of Baton Rouge. There is a major problem with loss of electricity due to the hours and hours of strong winds we endured. We learned a valuable lesson from Katrina and had our home wired up to a generator for times such as these. I'm blessed to be able to have electrical power right now! Many others are unable to communicate even by phone, much less computer!
Here's what I know, or what I'm hearing from local news:
Every parish around here is under curfew...city officials say it is not safe to be on the roads due to the large amounts of trees down and power lines on the roads. Anyone out on the roads without a really good reason is going to jail!
I haven't seen this first hand, but what they are saying on the local news is that the devastation in Baton Rouge is worse than it has ever been since they have been recording these things. They say there isn't a road left unaffected by trees or limbs. I believe that almost everyone is without power.
There were two people killed in Baton Rouge due to a tree falling on the home they were in (taking refuge with a friend). Two others in that home were not injured.
One person died in a car accident.
Personally, my home was unaffected, but we lost a tree and a fence. I'm thankful the Lord protected us. It got pretty scary for a while.
What a blessing to see so many posts of ladies praying for us! Thank you so much!
Please continue to pray, as there will be many days of cleanup and many days without power for thousands, if not millions, of people.
Blessings,
Tami in LA
I agree with "Preachers Wife", much of us are in the same spirit. I too thought about how to pray for the weather and for the people affected by it. I had the news on non-stop about the hurricanes(yes, plural!) I have been praying for everyone including my dear Siesta family and my dear LPM family. I also thought about Joshua asking the sun to "stand still" with none of the aftermath that would have followed something that catastrophic happening. He is the God of miracles, The Weather Man.
Very glad you and the girls are home safe and sound. Love you all very much, don't work so hard so fast. Starbucks will be open in the morning, will it not?
Love you sweet girl-
Lisa in Kirkland,WA
Welcome home Beth, and thanks for the reminder from James 5. I know many prayers were heard during this storm.
Need to go visit friends on the Karon Bulletin Board and mention that you gave good reviews on the newest book.
Emma who is still on Mitford volume 1.
Oh I read that Jan Karon book right after Christmas and while I LOVED it to death (I, too, live int he false reality that the Mitford dolks are my real life friends and hate when a book ends, I MISS them!) I thought it was terribly hard to read-again, since I think they are my friends/family. I cried a lot while I read it-she is such a wonderful writer. If you get to be BFF's, please introduce me!! :) Glad Gustav seems to have a change of heart-we are all holding our breath for Hannah out here on the East Coast!
As it rained here, all day, (and it hasn't rained here in months) I prayed often and kept checking the news stations to check on the weather in the south.
Father, protect those in the paths of the hurricanes and tropical storms in the south. Indeed Lord, be their levee.
p.s. Welcome home sweet Beth. Veronica and I (and Miesta Moose) will be seeing you in Billings in 18 days!)
Melana in Wyoming
Just wanted to see if there were any needs out there resulting from the storm. I know those who live in the area the storm hit and those who live in areas where people evacuated to might be in need of some things. Let us Siesta's know so we can help. Praying for you all. Much love!
Beth,
Glad to hear you got a vacation-y vacation! Sounds like y'all had a great time (though I must admit, I'm not exactly thrilled that the place requires rattlesnake boots).
We've been praying for the folks along the Louisiana coast, too, and were relieved to hear that Gustav was downgraded to a category 2 earlier today.
I'm a slow reader (with lots of work-related reading to do), so the only Jan Karon book I've read is a children's book, Miss Fannie's Hat. It was one of my daugther's favorite read-aloud stories when she was about 2 years old. I need branch out and read some of her other books!
Ittybittyloie (Lois):
I'll be praying for you to be comforted by the Lord and for Sadie, too.
Blessings,
Karen K.
Houston siesta
Oh Dear Beth, I also hold to how Gods word is so powerful, may we pray like Elijah. Lets pray together as we remember those involved in Gustav, believing in God.
Its such a blessing that you and your man got away, I am impressed that you had no cell phones or internet what a neat way to truely enjoy each other and God's goodness and country.
I was one of the Siesta Fiesta girls and joined you in San Antonio, I feel like your message was designed just for me. Thank you for the wonderful giftedness God has blessed you with. It was a super confirmation, affirmation from God that I am an hieress of GOD!!!! On a side note you and your girls are so beautiful.
I pray you are rested and refreshed for the next round.
God Bless you as you serve HIM humbly.
Love ya,
Alexia
Beth and Siestas... I am in Houston so you know we are all well, but I ask specifically for prayer for our sisters and brothers in Cuba. Since first traveling there with HFBC 2 years ago (and 4 times since), a huge chunk of my heart resides there. I have heard only that my friends in Havana are safe and were going to attempt to check the west side of the island today. I and they would greatly appreciate your prayers!
Amen we are on our knees for you. I am in face as I type this. I have prayed and prayed that the storm would diminish in power since He is the blessed controller of all things. praying in Alabama
I meant to add that if someone is looking for a good bible study to do before Esther comes out I have been doing "LORD, Change My Attitude" by James MacDonald. It is dvd and workbook driven and it is wonderful. I have been listening to him for 8 years and I always say he is my male version of Beth...LOL!!! Siestas you can check him out at www.walkintheword.com
HEY BETH.....NEXT BREAK YOU GET, YOU GOTTA READ "THE SHACK" BY WILLIAM YOUNG...THEN CALL ME.
SO THANKFUL THE STORM IS OVER!
LOVE, PAMABAMA
My city was under a hurricane warning since Saturday and was directly in the path of Gustav on one of the hurricane tracking models for the Texas Gulf Coast near the Lousiana border. Most everyone evacuated Sunday, but our hotel reservations weren't until Monday so we decided to wait and leave very early Monday morning. However, during the night Gustav corrected itself and was back on course toward the northwest, putting us on the east side, which meant only 40 mph winds. Of course, after the breath of relief that we wouldn't have to evacuate came the realization that that meant others would be hit. I, too, had been praying to God that He would speak to the wind and the waves and make them dissipate. I've lived on the Texas Gulf Coast all my life--I'm 54--and we used to go 10 years or more between hurricanes. However, within the past 3 years we've had Hurricane Rita ('05) and Hurricane Humberto ('07)hit my town. Then the threat of Gustav. Now there's another one to possibly enter the Gulf--Ike! I'll be glad when this season is over!!!
From what I saw on the internet, all is well in New Orleans. Thank you, Jesus!
These verses "just so happened" to show up in morning devotions yesterday before Gustav made landfall....
"The seas have lifted up, O Lord, the seas have lifted up their voice; the seas have lifted up their pounding waves.
Mightier than the thunder of the great waters,
mightier than the breakers of the sea--
the Lord on high is mighty."
Praise Him for showing His mightiness in the weakening of Gustav. I pray He continues to show off His might as more storms are brewing out there.
Blessings to all,
Kelli
Oh, and those verses are from Psalm 93:3-4! Didn't mean to leave that out!
Beth,
Happy to hear you made it back safely.
The Green Bay, WI Siestas are getting ready to start our fall Beth Moore Bible study. We are so excited to attend your study next August in Green Bay. We have our tickets and are designing our Siesta shirts!!
dawn
Welcome back Siesta Mama! Hope you and Keith had a wonderful, restful time...
We're praising God that Gustav's fury was tempered. Our God is MIGHTY! We were thinking we would see a lot of rain here in the Tennessee Valley from Gustav, but now it appears that won't happen.
Hugs,
Adrienne
Oh Beth! So glad to have you back from your vacation! And so glad that you had a great time with your man and your 2 doggies. Praise the Lord that He kept you from working...You needed and deserved a true vacation so badly! Can't wait to hear more stories when the time is right.
Gulf Coast Girls, we are praying for you. We have been for the last several days. Praise the Lord that He kept New Orleans from being hit...May His same mercies be apparant to all!
Much love to all the Siestas!
Beth...I also love all of the Jan Karon books. I am patiently waiting for a new one. Penelope Stokes with her "Blue Bottle Club" is another great Christian book..the ladies in my small group are passing it around now. Just finished "The Guernsey Literary Potato Peel Pie Society"!!! The title alone is enough to make you pick up it...charming book. I should have given you this hints before you packed up and went on vacation, eh?? So glad you had time to get away from it all and just relax and spend time with your man and pups. The snakes scare the crud out of me, I never heard of snake boots!!! Praying for the people who are affected by Gustav. Our new series at Saddleback in Lake Forest will be starting in Sept. "Stepping up"..can't wait. Welcome home!
Praying for everyone affected by Gustav. Beth, so thankful you had some time away. Always praying for you, your health, time, family and ministry. You are loved!
Love and Blessings, Debbie in Tennessee
Just reading about the image of those buses gives me chills. Loved your words, "Lord, be her levee".
Amen!
So glad you had a week to relax and can't wait to hear all the silliness:-)
We made the best of Gustav. We live in Beaumont and had to evacuate. We have some darling friends that live in North Houston. It's like going to an all inclusive resort everytime we visit. Our schools in Beaumont closed for an extra two days but we decided to drive home last night to beat the crowd. We felt as if we were driving into a ghost town. My prayers go out to you who live in the Morgan City and Houma, LA area.
Glad to have you back Miss Beth!
Dear Beth,
I'm so glad that you had a restful vacation. I too have been praying for God to dissipate that hurricane. My husband and I both lead groups of college students to New Orleans for clean-up after Katrina. I can't even begin to describe the devestation we saw or the hopefulness of the people who lived there. We met some determined folks and it was such a privilege to serve them. Most of all what a privilege to serve the God who does control the weather!
I want to ask a favor. I had my 8 year old daughter,Grace, with me in SA and she and I did the commisioning together. Although I'm sure it didn't sink in at the moment, the whole time we were repeating your words I kept thinking, "Lord, help her to remember this!" Would it be possible to get a copy of that blessing? I want to do a scrapbook and would love to have those words as a reminder.
We had such a great time and made some wonderful memories! Thanks sweet Siesta Mama! You are loved!
Kimberly
Beth,
Even your serious posts crack me up!
Love you to pieces!
Traci
I was glad to see a post from you today, Beth. My family is in Pensacola, FL and I felt the same way you did about Gustav. I didn't want any of it, but I sure didn't want New Orleans to get it again. Turned out God was in control. I loved the reminder about Him changing the weather for Elijah. I still am astounded that He would hold off the sunset like he did for a mere human. He is amazing. I really enjoyed LPL in San Antonio. I saw an some old friends and met a few new ones. I didn't make it to the Fiesta though. I am sure you guys had a blast. Maybe next time. I am coming to the re-taping of Breaking Free, and I am bringing a friend from church. Can't wait for that.
Hugs,

Hi Beth,
I know you're facing a busy day at the office so I'll try to be concise. I also know that yesterday we were all praying in one accord for our Gulf Coast siestas and especially our brothers and sisters at Franklin Ave even though we are scattered all over the country and beyond. God answered. Bless His name! You've been on my heart this morning so I'm praying even now that the peace of God that surpasses all understanding will guard your heart and mind in Christ Jesus.
Love and Blessings,
Patti Hayes

Hi Beth. Just wanted you to know that you continue to be a blessing to me. I sure wish I could have made it to the Siesta Fiesta!
Glad you got some restful time away.
When are you coming back to Southern Africa??

I thank God that He turned and took the umph! out of the storm.
Just this summer we moved from right outside N.O to the mountains of N.C.
But we left behind my parents, sister and SIL. My heart was so heavy.
There are still many without electricity and many in the Baton Rouge area got hit pretty decently. My husband has gone home to help those in need.
I pray the damage was not much and he will be home here with us soon.
Thank you all for your prayers!
Glad you had a good vacation! I love the times that I am far from mobile phone range and internet. However I am always blessed once I am back and able to catch up with my LPM blog reading and the other siestas! Thank God Gustav wasn't nearly as destructive as it could have been. My husband and I were scheduled to be on the coast this week for our 2nd Anniversary which is today, but God had other plans and we are blessed to be safe! We were driving around our little town in Arkansas and saw a huge convoy of National Guard heading towards Louisiana. Made my heart hurt.
Just so glad to know you're all right! And that the worst didn't happened. I still think it's a miracle those levies held when so much work was still yet to be done, not to mention how wet the underpinnings must have been. Anyway, glad everyone is safe. Let's don't stop praying since there are 4 more hurricanes out there.
PS- I do not like you walking where snakes are. Makes me nervous.
I'm so happy to read a post from you...totally made my day!! I'm glad you had a good vacation.
Hey, Beth!
I don't like SNAKES, I don't like MICE, and I'm not too fond of SPIDERS!!! But...I sure like (and love) you, Siesta! Glad you had a great vacation and are back refreshed and raring to go.
Dear Lois, I'm really sorry to hear about your sweet furry friends ddiagnosis. I got an urge in my spirit to comment and let you know not to let the enemy lie to you about being alone... God isn't far from you and when your friend is gone you won't be alone!!! Grab hold of our Brother, your Saviour!! He is there right now catching every tear! And you have about a billion siestas who love you too!
Praying for you today!!!
Judy
I enjoy Jan Karon's Mitford series so much I just keep rereading them every couple of years.
It's hard to find decent fiction! Glad you are a fellow Mitford lover!!!
Beth! I loved it when you said "heck's half acre!" My grandmother, from Arkansas of course, used to say that all the time! She also would say someone was "actin' a Bill Jones!" I always wondered who was Bill Jones and what did he do? I'm sure most folks in Arkansas knew him! And I was certain he did not do good things. Heehee.
Glad you had some sweet ranch time with your man!
Praying for those in the storm path!
Blessings,

The buses must have been an amazing site! We have lots of people from the gulf coast in shelters here in North Texas. They're hoping they get to return home soon and that their homes are still intact. Glad you had a relaxing vacation. We live in the country (outside Decatur TX) and my theory on snakes is: The only good snake is a dead one!! Gail
Bless you Beth for the Godly example you set for us~ letting us know it's o.k to take time to rest! Loving and supporting your husband in the way you always do. So glad you're back! Missed you.
Jean
Oh! The Mitford series is my all time favorite series.....Everyone should read it.
Beth,
You always touch my heart. I loved the anonymous comment about snake boots being part of the armour of GOD. That made me snort diet coke through my nose.
Me too! Me too! I want to be Jan Karon's best friend. I have heard her in person, she has the voice of an angel.

I'm so glad you were able to have a restful vacation free of cell phones and internet. You needed that!
The Siesta Fiesta was amazing. You and your girls were so sweet to take the time to visit with us.
I sure wish I could have hugged your neck, but maybe another time.
I also wanted everyone on the gulf coast to know I'm praying.
Love,
Valerie
Welcome back Beth--thankful that you had a very restful and refreshing vacation. After returning home from San Antonio I was helping my Mom clean out some drawers and we ran across a box of old photos. Those are always fun to look at but what caught my eye was the brand name on the old box "Heiress"! Apparently it was a brand of lingerie in years gone by. But I was reminded again of our great inheritance! Thanks so much for those sessions!
Oh yes--I forgot to mention--glad you are a Jan Karon fan! Were you aware that she lived in Blowing Rock NC for awhile? I think she has moved now since so many people tried to track her down there while visiting the streets of the fictional Mitford. Westly--the college town in the books is Boone, NC! Just a little trivia for you all. The books are great! I've only heard of one mistake in the new book--MS people say a "pone" of cornbread while those of us in NC say "cake".
Ms. Beth - I just wanted to say that I just bought your book "Feathers from my Nest" Friday night and I am in love with it! It is such a beautiful reflection of your love for your family. I really admire how you have allowed the Lord to shape you into a precious Woman of God. You had every reason to quit, fail, giveup, and not care, but you didn't. You have persevered and God has rewarded you faithfully. It has been such an encouragement to me over the past few days. It would be good for you to do an "update" on the book given Jackson's arrival and Melissa's marriage!! :) Just a thought. I love you sweet Beth!
Happy you are back. Hope you are rested and and refreshed and can't wait to hear your stories of the week.
Hugs,
Susan
So glad you were able to take some much deserved time off. I so appreciate all you do for your Siestas. We love you! We want you to be refreshed! I hope that you and Keith both have benefited from your time away.
Please remember the residents of Houma, LA in your prayers. They received a direct hit from Gustav. There are missing roofs, trees have fallen into homes, etc. I'm not sure of flooding. They city is approximately 16 feet above sea level so more than not, there is flooding, too.
One of our friends pastors a church in Thibodaux (17 miles from Houma) said he got word that they lost the roof to their new youth center and part of the roof to the back of the church. He does not know anything about his home yet.
We used to live in Houma and have been in touch by cell phone with our friends -- most of them evacuated to either Houston or North LA. Thank the Lord they are all safe and in amazingly good spirits.
I have read several of the Southern girls' blogs and have been in touch with some by email. I have been praying for them, too.
We have an awesome God who is our tower and refuge. The Word tells us that He watches over His children and it is evident that He has done just that!
Blessings,
Sherry
Hi, everyone, just my second time
on here. I love reading all of the
comments. Glad you had a real vacation, Beth. I was at the weekend in Louisville with you and was a little worried as you looked so thin. Hope the rest was refreshing. Was listening to you the other day when you were laughing about how John always called himself the disciple Jesus loved. It suddenly hit me how John really got it. Each one of us
could call ourselves "the believer
that Jesus loved", couldn't we? Isn't that the most amazing thing in the world.
In Him,
Esabelle
hey mama beth..
i can't stop thinking about the new orleans area either...and echo your prayers, Lord, have mercy.
Praise God that Gustav lost some of it's steam. Beth so glad that you and Keith and the pups had a relaxing time. We love our Texas hill country!
I'm glad to hear you had a true vacation!! I could use a week with a front porch, good book, grilling, and my man.
Praise God that Gustav lost his steam!
We are on a goat farm (it's a beautiful ranch!) waiting to move into our new home but the snakes have me freaked out on my quick walks, I mean runs. You are quite the ranch girl! How awesome for you--- a vacation w/ no cell, no internet. Your words sound rested and ready. So grateful for my hometown of N.O. getting sideswiped.
Dear Beth,
So very glad that you are home and that you got to take a real vacation from work. It was so great to be with you in San Antonio and when you said you honestly would love to hug each of us, I really felt the hug in my heart.
I join you in remembering the coastal residents during this time.
Love,
Dianne
I have just read a new Christian fiction author, Elizabeth Musser. She is fabulous! She is a missionary in France and has brought me to tears (happy tears..) with her writing. I recommend The Swan House, The Dwelling Place, and Searching for Eternity. The Swan House should be read before The Dwelling Place. Those two are based in Atlanta (I was thinking of Melissa) and mentions The Varsity like a million times. Searching for Eternity will have you, as my eight-year old says, "pouring down crying at the altar." (That's his sweet Alabama way of saying you are crying your eyes out.)

Hi Siestas!!!
I am just now recovering from the awesome-ness of the Fiesta!! Had such a blast meeting everyone!!
Beth, I am soo glad that you and Keith were able to get away and have some time to rest and just be together. I would just say, stay away from snakes!!! They creep me out no end!!!
Also, Jan Karon?! My most favorite!!! I have turned so many people on to her and the precious town of Mitford!! I must admit that I did make the trek to Blowing Rock a few years ago...I dragged my Nanny and Nandaddy too! They hadn't read the books yet but they both soon fell in love with them as I had. I have to tell you this story...I found out a year or so ago that Jan Karon was going to be in Franklin and you could go hear her speak and tell stories. I was sooo excited!! I called my Nanny and said that she and Nandaddy had to come too. Plus, there was the added benefit of Paula Deen being in town doing a book signing the next day! Nanny and I love Paula!! So they end up coming over and spending the night for us to go...we get to the church where Jan Karon was going to be speaking and we are waiting to go in. It was a first come, first serve seating thingy. So as we are standing in line, Nandaddy is looking around the room/line. I thought he was checking out the building because he used to be a engineer. Anyways, he looks around and then stops and says, "There aren't any men here!" and looked at me and Nanny like we tricked him into coming!! But as the evening went on, more men showed up and he was okay. And Steve Green sang, which made him feel a little better because he loves Steve Green.
I love sharing things like that with my grandparents! They are my favorite!!
I hope you have a great week at work...and stay dry!
Praying for all my Gulf Coast Siestas!!!
Love, NIkki
- be her levee...PRICELESS!
Lots of gals on here have talked about the Jan Karron books....I've not read these and for me, a person totally in love with the written word, that is pretty unheard of. Are they really that good?
I am currently reading a book called Orchid House by Cindy Martinusen and I would recomend it to anyone who would take the suggestion...it is sooooo good!
For fun girly, friendship stuff you have to read the Yada Yada Prayer Group series by Neta Jackson. Oh my gosh....they are so funny, so serious at times, and so very encouraging in respect to our walk with the Lord. Amazing series!!!!
Praise God for taking some of the wind out of Gustav's sails! Having grown up not too far from Houma (in Holden but now relocated to near Waco, Texas), I still have a great deal of family in that area. Although they haven't had telephone or electricity since early Monday morning, I'm happy to report that the only other damage is a few downed trees and a shed that was blown over. It certainly could have been much worse and we are thankful it was not.
Don't stop praying, though, girls as flooding is still a huge concern. Unfortunately, most of the areas that were hit really hard by this storm don't have a levee system at all. Let's keep praying Ike and Hannah decide they feel much more at home out in the wide blue seas.
Thank you for your words Beth!
Thanks be to God for His salvation on the Gulf Coast, as Father Tim would say.
Dear Beth,
I'm glad that you had such a wonderful vacation. I have never been to the Hill Country (never stepped foot in TX until May), but I have seen pictures and I'm sure they don't do it justice, but it looks breathtaking. I miss the beautiful hills and wildflowers in WV. I also have always admired Bluebonnets and I am so excited that I get to plant some now that I'm here.
More importantly, I was also sick when I heard the Gustav was heading straight for New Orleans and Mississippi. I thought about how hard the people have worked to get where they are and how so so far they still have and I just prayed and prayed about it.
I really hope that I get to come to the Christmas celebration at your church. I am telling the hubby that is what I want for my birthday, the whole family to come (my birthday is this month). We actually visited your church (I'm sorry, I don't know the correct abbreviation) and we loved it. We moved too far away though and we have been visiting different churches. After visiting one church in temp. living, I laid out a list and my husband picked yours. After he heard your pastor, (he was going through some Red Sea series), he said "that was awesome" (that means a lot coming from my hubby) and he made me go back the next week when he was out of the country. I remember your pastor saying "this world will rip you apart" and then he went on to talk about very serious issues that men, well primarily men, are dealing with. He was also very funny. Anyway, I know that my family would enjoy the celebration.
I always find myself typing more than I mean to. I guess it is built-up blogging issues. I have read this blog from the beginning and I always felt so weird about actually putting anything out there. I only made a couple of comments and then I thought "quit being so weird and get in on the fun." I am actually taking a few months off because we have moved and I need to get things right on the homefront so I might be on here a lot. However, even when I was busy and insanely tired, I got on here for encouragement. My favorite post of yours to this day is "The Self-Condemnation of the Red Bird." Forgive me if I did not get the title exactly right, but I do remember everything it said. I told all of my girlfriends to read it. I have been walking in victory for six years, but occasionally, I have those days where I want to self-loathe, the old familiar, dysfuntional "this feels good (but it really doesn't, it's just selfish)." It is very self-centered and when I go there, I still look at that post (I printed it out). Anyway, thank you for what you do. Lord knows that you have had to yield to Him so much to do it. You cannot possibly imagine all of the people you help.
I live in Navarre, FL (east of Pensacola), and all we had from Gustav was a couple of thunderstorms and some gusty winds. We are praying for the people west of us who were hit directly.
Please also pray for the people in Haiti who have been hit by these storms. So much loss and devastation for them.
Y'all are in my prayers! I have to tell y'all, I was listening to KLOVE this morning and Chris Tomlin was on. He told the story behind 'God of this City' and I was in tears before I ever got to work. I feel like this song- although was for Thailand, can be applied to all of our cities- New Orleans, Houston, OKC, San Antonio- for NUMEROUS reasons. I just want to let y'all know, there is plenty God still has yet to do in all of our cities! The links are below. On KLOVE you can listen and the story is right at the 20 minute mark. The other link is written:

Oh sweet Beth, you just don't know how many times I prayed to God to spare Houston, thinking of your sweet family. Every time I saw that Gustav was losing some strength and showing some mercy on NOLA and Houston, peace invaded my soul.
So glad to know you're home and everyone is safe. I'm praying with you for the Lord to be their levee.
Thank you for being such a blessing to me.
I do pray for those on the gulf coast - even more storms might be headed there way. Also, I would like to pray for Sarah Palin and her family (esp. her daughter) as the media is trying to tear her to shreds. I'm reminded of Psalm 62:
"How long will you assault a man?
Would all of you throw him down—
this leaning wall, this tottering fence? They fully intend to topple him from his lofty place; they take delight in lies. With their mouths they bless, but in their hearts they curse. Find rest, O my soul, in God alone; my hope comes from him."(Psalm 62:3-5) May she and her family find strength in God and stand firm during these ugly attacks. We need to all pray for our country - Kerin
Oh, boy, I just love reading yr words... I'm doing Stepping Up in my ladies' cell group, and Believing God on my own (put it on hold until Stepping Up is done, my optimism was taken over by realism re: homework). I love your bible studies, and hope that God keeps inspiring you to put more & more out there.
Love & hugs
Kerry (a siesta-wannabee in South Africa!)
Beth,
I am so glad that you are reminding God of His words again...like He would forget! Glad your vaca was great. Who would go on a trip without their snake boots anyway? What were you thinking? Have a blessed week...Hiker-Mama
We have watched the nation rally their prayers around the Gulf Coast regions and are praising God he has kept Gustav from mass destruction. We continue praying as we watch two more storms form off the coast.
Snake Boots - have a couple pair of those in my closet. In fact they outnumber the church shoes I have. I told my dearest he could get me a gift certificate to the mall this year so I can buy some decent shoes.
You might think of getting some guinea fowl for those snakes. They have all but eliminated our rattlesnake problem on our homestead. Marvelous birds I tell ya!
Take Care and we will be praying for all the coastal regions in danger over the next two months.
One more thing - Our group finished the NOG's study but not before you closed comments on the last posting. FABULOUS study!!! I highly recommend it. We are now onto studying Romans via your 30 minute lessons on the main site.
Blessings to all!

Spiritual Mom Beth!:)
Welcome back!:) Hope your first day back yesterday was good! I am so glad that God calmed that storm down, but I did see that the coast and you all have got some rain. I was thinking, It has to be the prayers of the siestas! But, I'm sure, others across the country were praying too:)..Don't think I've ever read anything from her-I should add her to my list:)...You and Precious Man Keith are the cutest! Ya'll are inspiring:)...Bwahaha, Avocado!:)...Snake boots, wow, I hate snakes! There was one in my mother-in-law's house once. We were sitting in the living area, going over I believe it was either your Daniel or Patriarchs study (i think it was Daniel:), and I glanced up and thought it was a toy of my nephews, and then it moved. We were horrified-it was the poisonous kind! Then Mimi (my MIL) took a garden rake and just went to town on it! She hates those things as much as I do! Anyway, random, long story. I'd better stop posting now:)
Love you too Spiritual Mom Beth-all your "peeps" Siestas love you!:)

Beth,
I'm so glad you had a restful vacation with your husband and dogs. As a florida girl most of my life, hurricanes are a part of life. I too was praying for those in the path because it sometimes seems to much to bear. I loved your statement about God be there levee. One of my pastors emailed this amazing song this summer about Gods love by Kim Walker. Its called How He Loves, it speaks of hurricanes and winds of mercy. It lives on my ipod. May God give hope and strength to all those affected and courage to move forward. Thanks for all you do for the kingdom of God.

Greetings from coastal SC! We've got Hurricane Hanna (or Tropical Storm Hanna? not sure which now) coming our direction. Keep us in your prayers this week.
Beth,
I'm an Arizona girl and have lived all over this nation and currently live in SC. I've been fortunate to see you, learn from you and worship with you in several states. Most recently, I got to got to Jacksonville in the Spring and Atlanta in June among several other places over the years. (bear with me, I have a point...)
My mom and her best friend, Joyce are going to Deeper Still this weekend in Vegas and I won't get to join them this time. These two women have been my earliest and two of my strongest spiritual influences. Joyce just burried her husband last week in Phoenix after a long battle with brain cancer. My mom is an amazing godly pillar of a woman who ministers in so many ways through her business to people who need a second chance. These women are the real deal, both of them. If you get this, maybe you could give these two lovely ladies from AZ, a shout out in Vegas. They both love you dearly. You'd love them if you knew them, I'm sure of it.
I know it's a lot to ask but at least I can ask, right?
Love you tons,
Jaime
Welcome Home Mama Beth! Glad you and Keith had the opportunity to "get away" for a real vacation. And no work.....WOW!
I am late in reading the blog, but am Praising God for Gustav losing some of his power before going ashore at New Orleans.....
We are starting up our fall Bible Study next Tues, the 9th. We are going to be doing "Heaven" by Randy Alcorn and then I think we will do a new study by one of your recommended teachers, Marian Kassens. She has a new study out about Knowing God By Name....sounds awesome. Of course in January 2009 we will be doing "Esther". Can hardly wait, sure hope Lifeway has a HUGE supply of that study.
Have a blessed week LMP staff!!

Well, this Mississippi Gulf Coast Girl thanks y'all for your prayers. While Gustav gave my household a glancing blow there were many other here that went without power and many who experienced flooding. My heart goes out to those in the Southern regions of Louisiana who were hit so hard. Praise be to God, I saw a long caravan of bucket trucks from electric companies on Interstate 10heading west,...must have been 200 hundred of them! So, help is on the way! We are lifting y'all up in our prayers.
So glad you had a great vacation! I was praying for you. San Antonio and the fiesta were wonderful! And I just want to say that you are an incredible teacher/speaker! (no matter how your notes look) And I should know I teach public speaking.
Glad everyone in the path of Gustav is o.k.
We are bracing for the effects from Hannah here in North Carolina.
Prayer request: Could you pray for my husband who is on a mission trip to Asia? Thank you!
Much love!
Kristi B.
Thank Ya Jesus! I live on the Mississippi Gulf Coast and let me tell you, it got a little hairy over my way! We were on the east side of the storm, which tends to be the worst. There were tornado warnings all over the place. But, all in all, we faired very well. Trees and limbs were down everywhere, and we had some storm surge flooding. To my knowledge, we only had one fatality...and it was due to a motorist driving during the storm, but did not make it to where he/she was going. So sad.
But the weather we received was NOTHING like Louisiana received. After all the damage Katrina did to the Mississippi Gulf Coast and New Orleans, I'm glad that Gustav didn't directly hit us. We are still recovering. People are still living in FEMA trailers and MEMA cottages. There were even a few MEMA cottages floating around in the flood waters. All caught on tape by the media who were braving the weather to report what was happening. For me, I wouldn't be out in the middle of a storm for any pretty penny that may be offered!
Thanks for checking on us and praying for us!
Prayers and blessings,
Rebecca

I am so glad you and Keith were able to have a much needed vacation, and to have so much fun. My man and the other boys opened up dove season near Gatesville, Texas. My mom and I just did girl stuff.
So thankful Gustav wasn't worse than it was, and now for the next storms to follow. That will be our next big prayer.
I also think with all the "politics" going on, we need to keep all of them in our prayers, for they will be leading our country, and right now, God is the only answer I know.
What a wonderful time in San Antonio and how blessed we all were, and what fun afterwards. Love those pictures. Phyllis
I was on the other side of the storm from you. In Jackson County, Mississippi (that is East of Gulfport and west of Mobile, Al). We are right off the MS/AL line. Not to be confused with Jackson, MS our fair state capital, which is mid-state. I'm right off the Gulf in the most Southeast corner of Mississippi.
Anyway, I agree, and most I have talked to, with your sentiment that we hope and pray it won't hit us when a storm is mentioned, but we don't want anyone else to get hurt either.
I think it is a great testament to God how the Wednesday before it hit Jamaica...Gustav was making a hurried B-line straight for the Gulf, then we all had Wednesday night services (which in my church of First Baptist of Moss Point, is a huge prayer meeting with a devotion to-boot). Then by Thursday morning it had done an almost about face with a left hook, then went South not North of Jamaica. And like you said God suck the oomph right out of it.
We serve an Awesome God, Ladies. My fear of Him is also my strength to boldly obey.
I was reading through the posts to see if anyone in particular needed prayer or a need through all of this storm and continuing storm activity.
I wanted to say hi to Beth and welcome home and all of that but
I'm sort of puzzled? Who is the man who said "Congratulations?" in one of the posts?
I clicked on his blog. I am wondering about this.
Ok, I am still praying and glad you all are safe.
Blessings and love,
Teri
I was looking at my blog rettathinks.blogspot.com and realized that in my post for today, "Daniel", are some great points that are relevant to all that has happened with Gustav....Here is an excerpt...
What I get from Daniel is…
1. God is in control! Even when others don’t believe in Him.
2. God is Almighty! We just need to trust and obey no matter the apparent outcome.
3. God gets the glory! In Daniel there are great passages of praise and worship to the Lord...Here are a few:
† 2:20-23
20 Daniel said,
"Let the name of God be blessed forever and ever,
For wisdom and power belong to Him.
21 "It is He who changes the times and the epochs;
He removes kings and establishes kings;
He gives wisdom to wise men
And knowledge to men of understanding.
22 "It is He who reveals the profound and hidden things;
He knows what is in the darkness,
And the light dwells with Him.
23 "To You, O God of my fathers, I give thanks and praise,
For You have given me wisdom and power;
Even now You have made known to me what we requested of You,
For You have made known to us the king's matter."
† 4:3
3 "How great are His signs
And how mighty are His wonders!
His kingdom is an everlasting kingdom
And His dominion is from generation to generation.
As a New Orleanian (yes, we call ourselves that), thank you for all of your prayers. We are so thankful that God placed His mighty hand on those levees and held them strong. I know that I surely said some extra prayers for Franklin Avenue BC and am thankful it is okay. My family and I evacuated to South Carolina (where we have family), but are very anxious to return home. Please continue to pray for all of those that Gustav effected and pray for those that Hanna may effect. I can't wait until you all are in my city in November! I'm ready to break free!
I'm so glad you had a real vacation! Welcome back!
The Fiesta was such a precious time, thank you for doing a little more than normal for us!
As for those snakeboots, well....I think I just might have tried on a bright red pair on Monday....all in fun...but someone took a few pictures and I've put them up on my blog...when you need a laugh.....
Blessings and hugs!
steph.
I am afraid this has nothing to do with your blog but just wanted to say I am having a rough day...week...month and I recently start Beloved Disciple on my own. Today, I sat down to watch the Lesson 2 video that speaks about how John felt in the garden and difficult times in our lives. I needed to hear that the darkness may be caused by Him holding me tight. Thank you for the words the Word used to remind me to hold on.
My first time to be back to the blog since before gustav....we here in south Ms did just fine! We are about 80 or so miles from New Orleans I think? Just over the Ms border at the toe of the boot. We got a call from a friend and ministry partner in New Orleans Sat. night about 10:00pm saying they were on thier way! They arrived safely around 12:30am and rode out the hurricane with us. We praise Jesus for a minimal storm and for electricity! Our friends were able to leave this morning, but not sure if they will have power at thier home. The wife, Cynthia is afraid of dogs so we prayed for her while she was on her way. ( we have 7 and they were all in the house during the storm )There was no problem, they loved her and she even played with them and fed them peanut mm's when I wasnt looking. I will have some pictures on my blog later today I hope but as my son reminded me as I was standing on the porch snapping pictures, you cant see wind. Thank you for your prayers
"Oh Lord be her levee!"...I said a big Amen and Thank You to that!
I was in New Orleans doing an event that weekend Katrina was coming. The event only lasted for part of the day...I do not think I stayed there 24 hours. We exited with the first day of evacuation on the Contra Flow...it was so numbing. We were in continuous conversation with the Lord in our car...not even knowing what the days ahead were going to bring.
We sort of re-lived it again as we drove out of town on Saturday morning from San Antonio to Oklahoma - like you we saw caravans of help coming to the area - there were so many big buses(not school buses)!
Well, reading your snake stuff gives me shivers...but I am glad you and Keith have those moments together!
I loved the Living Proof in SA and the Siesta event...I blogged about our experience...It was a special time!!
Be Inspired my friend!
I read your post about tempered joy. Thinking about how the human spirit perseveres. Just through what my own human eyes have seen on a personal level during my lifetime & through technology seeing what is going on in the world in which we live. There are events that have happened during my lifetime both personally & in the world in which we live that after they have happened, I thought I will never feel joy again. From the depths of that pain, my soul longed for the peace that only comes from having Jesus Christ as Savior in my life. I feel that I now sometimes take God, God's Word, and Jesus for granted. That I don't witness enough about God, God's Word, and Jesus. That I want the easy way out. That I don't want to sacrifice anything in life for my relationship with Jesus, God, and applying God's Word in my life. These are some truths in my own life that I am coming to terms with right now.
Welcome Home Beth, I am so glad to hear that you had a refreshing vacation with your Supperman in God's country... by the way, is the John Deere like his Bat-mobile? :D hahaha! Supperman in the John Deere! That's an Awesome visual!
So thankful Gustav wasn't as bad as they thought.. PHEW! Praying for all you Gulf Coast Siesta's!
Beth it was such a joy & honor to meet you (& hug your neck) and your daughters in SA. We had a great time! And your message...AWESOME! Thank you!
Groovewoman:)
OK Beth! I have a question for you...do you ever get tired and poop out? I do this on a daily basis, but you seem to keep going no matter what! I guess you do coffee and this is the answer...I am not a coffee fan nor a caffeine fan! Maybe there is no chance for me to have the energy you have.
I believe in praying for the weather, too. I live in "Wizard of Oz" territory (Kansas) and earlier this year there was a large tornado headed right for Greensburg, KS which had been all but wiped off the map last year. I think many of us sat glued to our televisions/radios and we prayed that sucker around Greensburg and away from other populated areas. I'm praising with you and others that Gustav was not worse, can't imagine if it had been!
I'm also finishing "Home to Holly Springs" myself right now...love Jan Karon's lovable characters!
Thanks for all you share,
Lisa
Praise God, Beth, that you and your family are all safe as we continue to pray for those suffering the effects of Gustav, and asking Our Great and Awesome God to quiet the storms of Hannah and Ike. He's still answering our prayers as you reminded us. Much love to you, your family, staff, Travis & Praise Team.
I caught how YOU remind the Lord...that was funny, I do that all the time. It tickles me to think of how HE reminds us of His promises and we have to remind others of theirs. To our parents "remember you said we would..." to our spouse, "you promised to fix the ..." too funny. Then God says to us, "Remember I will Never...." wow! My family is in Baton Rouge with babies and all no power no jobs. Thank you for your prayers.
Rachele
So glad that God is the God of the storms. Isn't He gracious and loving? Praise Him for His protection!
Beth-I'm so proud of you. Last summer I did a REAL vacation for 7 days without work (ok...1, but only 1 phone call)...It was awesome. So glad you did that for you and Keith. You both deserved it.
Oh, and do I have any other fellow "country" Siestas who giggled when reading the comment about not knowing what snake boots were! Too cute. I want to be THAT girlie, but alas...it's not to be!Just another example of how a diverse group with one Savior can come together and enjoy fellowship!
Much love to all my Siestas - Cindy

Beth- you guys need to check out this new song, " You're not alone" its amazing, by Meredith Andrews...SO POWERFUL...:)
I always love to check in here and see what God is doing...so glad the Seista Fiesta was so wonderful. I know I am far away, but checking this blog and reading the comments surely helps me keep in touch with what God is doing in the U.S.
We'd appreciate prayers here in Thailand, too--there is a lot of political unrest resulting in protests, strikes and confusion. Please pray for peace.
Thank you,
A siesta in a far land,
Sheila
Praising the Lord and talking about "heck's half acre" do not go hand in hand. Please Beth.
Beth,
My family and I are fine. I live 2 hours north of Lafayette, La. and we had some wind damage. Lost 2 sheets of tin off our horse barn and a couple of trees on the fence, but Praise God that was it.
My husband works on an oil rig in the gulf and as we drove him to Intercostal city yesterday morning alot of people were not so fortunate. We saw several homes with water in them.
The saddest thing to me were the homes that are abandoned after Rita, beautiful Plantation style homes just sitting there empty.
It made me all the more thankful.
Thanks again for all you prayed for the storm. But keep praying we have more on the way.
In Christ,
Cassie
"Oh, Lord, be her levee"---- mama beth, this gave me chills. over the last few days i watched the weather channel almost constantly, and had to laugh with joy whenever gustav went from a category 3 down to a 2, down to a 1, and finally to a tropical depression. it was like watching God reply to our prayers.
my bff, hannah, is coming to houston to visit me for the first time ever! she'll be here in 2 hours- i'm so thankful gustav didn't cancel her trip! it's a small thing compared to the destruction he could've caused, but i'm praising Him for it anyway:).

I'm a southern girl and just can't seem to call you by just your first name... it's just not proper enough for me.
Anyways... I know we all prayed for a restful time for you. It sounds as though it was.
Unfortunately, hurricane season seems to be strong, so strong right now. We're going to be on our knees a lot over the next week or two. It looks like planes on approach to DFW airport with one storm lined up right after another.
I also wanted to say that I have been noticing and marking (in green pencil mind you - green for land/property) every time I notice the word inherit in my daily readings. Psalm 37 - 4 TIMES! And I read that last week right after the conference. Oh, God is SO good.
Blessings,
Donna
Hi Beth!
I love reading this blog. You are so funny and I get lifted up each day I read it. I left an award for you on my blog :) Go get it girl-your blog deserves it!
I'm so glad you and your husbandvhad a time of well-deserved rest!!! You all certainly earned it. :)
Spiritual Mom Beth:)
I wanted to share with you-MY HEART IS FULL TONIGHT!:) The Lord has been impressing these thoughts in my mind now and it is so freeing, so I wanted to share with you: We are new creations. We are not that person we used to be. We are dead to sin. How can we live in it any longer? We can choose life for the rest of our days, knowing that He is able to keep us from stumbling (Jude 24,25:)! Is that not the most freeing thought ever!!! I am not that person I used to be. I do not have to be that person! I could cry. This is GOOD, Spiritual Mom Beth! PRAISE THE LORD! God is for us, not against us:)
Love you,
katiegfromtennessee
If you want to read the most romatic christian novel, it is Redeeming Love by Francine Rivers!! It is based on the book of Hosea. I have to tell you that I slept with it clutched to my chest after I finished it. Awesome!!!
