Glad I'm a Woman

OK, I just have a sec but I'm so amused by something that I have to tell you about it. I am at a coffee shop close to Melissa's apartment. The movers packed her stuff yesterday and are putting it in the truck as we speak. I'd been perched on her back porch but they needed to move that furniture, too. Besides, it's cold here today and my hands were freezing. All that to say, I had to find a place close by and, as God would have it, it has wireless internet. The place was packed when I came in. Really cute decor with a half a dozen small round tables surrounded by four wing back chairs. By the time I ordered my coffee, several people departed and I threw my stuff in a chair as fast as I could. In a few minutes, two men - I think in late thirties - couldn't find a place to sit so they asked if they could sit at my table. I told them to be my guest. They'd not distract me at all.

I totally lied.

Watching those two men try to do coffee was the most awkward thing I've ever seen. They couldn't have been business associates or, goodness knows, they'd have talked business. And I would've been relieved. Instead, for the life of them, they could not think of one single thing to say. And, no, they weren't trying to be quiet for my sake. The whole establishment is abuzz with conversation. One of them tapped on the top of his cup. The other made a few attempts at sentences starting with, "SO..." It was pitiful. Worse than pitiful. It was painful. I cannot tell you how tempted I was to help them. They needed rescuing in the worst way and I had at least five topics for conversation on the tip of my tongue: weddings, up-dos, grandboys who have learned to talk in full sentences, women's Bible study, and baby girls moving to Atlanta with new husbands. But somehow I got the feeling they didn't want my help. I tried not to look at them. It would have been too humiliating for them. So there I sat, pecking away on my computer, acting like I had no idea that they were having the world's most awkward cup of coffee. Anyway, I don't even think they were real coffee drinkers. Out of the corner of my discerning eye, I saw no pause for reflection after a single sip. Dead giveaway that they were posers. That was their first problem.

And here I am, communicating with a whole herd of women I've never even met with names that, five years ago, would've sounded like cartoon characters and about all manner of personal thing happening in my family's life.

Yep. I love being a woman.

PS. I like to have died (that's how my people always talked. I really do have some education. I just don't sound like I do) over Mommy Dot Com sharing that she'd been nominated as "customer of the week" at her neighborhood Starbucks and nearly started crying when they announced someone else as the winner. Laughing my danged head off. You are customer of the week to all your siestas.

Why can we do that? Have the most intimate, outstanding, LOVING, HONEST conversations with our Siesta's. And others profess to know one another and struggle.

THANK YOU JESUS that we are women, full of love for one another and for YOU!

Lovingly,
Yolanda

I love women! For everything my dear husband lacked in enthusiasm over my new, and somewhat drastic, haircut, my precious bible study sisters more that made up for. I don't think he could have pulled off calling me "smart and sassy" anyway ;-)

Just curious.

Too funny, doesn't it make you wonder really what their relationship was..I do that when I am "people watching", just wonder what people are doing and going through. Those men you saw, could have been hubbies, and had dropped their wives off somewhere shopping, and they just had to spend the day together because of that. Oh well..I do enjoy your blog. It has such wonderful contributors ;-). I posted a comment on your last post, it was kinda lengthy, I went back and did't see it. Maybe you've approved of it since. Hope so.
Thanks again for sharing the wedding details with us.

Today I'm off to a women's retreat and I'll be thinking of all the siestas here while I'm there. Too bad this doesn't have a way for me to post a video, or I would....

Love BIG!

dear Beth,
yep, I love being a woman too, if 2 women had sat down with you, you would have not only known all about them in 10 minutes, you would have already exchanged photos and and promises to meet for lunch some day! Poor guys, they can't even open a conversation....and they had no idea how interesting that conversation could heve been.

Amen! Amen! I got a call from a friend this morning and we talked for 30 minutes about her renewed energy level and what she had cleaned this morning as well as 100 other topics.

My husband says it makes his head spin when I go into a crowd knowing zero people and walk away knowing people. He just can't figure out how I do it! He's so cute.

What an exciting time to be a woman! So many people, so little time! HA

Have a great day and I pray & hope all the moving plans go without a hitch.

Take Care!

It always amazes me at my husband and his "friends" they can take a whole car ride for hours and hardly speak two sentences. That is not my kind of friendship. They seem more content to sit, pass gas together, gut deers, watch hunting videos, and other things that don't appeal to my womanhood...it is the strangest thing I have ever seen.

Amen, siesta!! My daughter is doing a missionary internship 5,000 miles away in France until May (after 3.5 years away at a college just 150 miles away!) But thankfully, her hostess has a free line to the USA . . .still, our conversations are relegated to once weekly phone calls (& internet's not real convenient in France!) Every time I emerge from the bedroom after a 2+ hr. conversation the men in the house give me 'the look' . . . "I can't believe you just did it again - how in the world can you have that much to talk about!!"

Yep, I'm glad I'm a woman . . .
and thanks for 'indulging' our womanliness by sharing your heart with honesty, humor & love:)

After a long week at work I got a chance to sit and read the stories and see the pictures and praise God for His goodness and answered prayers. And you both have such a gift for expressing, in the written word, in a way that make one able to feel as though they were right there with you all. Thank you again for sharing with us all. And I laughed at the coffe shop story. It is great to be a woman!! And one more thing, I am doing your study of the book of Daniel right now and it is profound!!! I've always love the book and I've been thanking God for gifting you to be able to teach through the video and pages the rich treasures that I never saw before. The study has been challenging and sobering and exciting to think that our God wanted us to know about certain things ahead so we can be strong and take courage and to pray for those who are and will experiance what is to come. Thank you for ministering to us in a way that continually calls us up higher in our walk with Jesus. May His loving peace and presence warm all your hearts today. In Jesus' Love Kath Knoblock

I love being a woman too! We can talk kids, in-laws, work, husbands, the latest fad and the cutest jacket we just picked up---and all that BEFORE we even order our grande non-fat white chocolate mocha with peppermint! :)

I laugh sometimes when the "couples" have dinner--- we women get to work on all of the important issues of the world and the men do the one conversation that they know well...sports! What cracks me up the most is that most of the women can talk circles around them about sports...but we let them think they know it all!

I am glad you could have a distraction like that on a day that could have been full of tears!

Bless you for sharing for you always bless my life!

Hi Beth...maybe that's your next mission in life. A study for men on how to really communicate with one another! I'm with you. I'd have it no other way and am so glad to be a woman. It's just the way God made us, destined to be Siestas who have a great need to communicate. Have you ever read the book, "Friendships of Women" by Dee Brestin? Might be time for book 2 to come out, for men! Gotta love 'em though.

I love this post! I have a friend who has become a mentor to me and we have discovered that our husbands are very similar. They are both very quiet and getting them to talk is no easy task. She and I have been meeting for lunch about once a week for the last year and in the last six months our husbands have started having lunch once a week as well. I'm glad they like each other enough to even want to do that. In fact, my husband just left our office to go meet this man for lunch today. Anyway, my friend and I have often wondered what those two talk about. Now I know....Hopefully my husband and his friend have gotten past the stage these two guys are at but I'm not sure...sometimes I'd love to me a fly on the wall, but thanks to you, I probably have just gotten a fly's eye-view.

Hi Miss Beth,

By the way, you can talk about the wedding all you want, as I think I am able to speak for most of us; we love hearing about it!

Thank you so much for taking time out of your day to "visit with us" !!!

The scene that you just set before us sounds so amusing to me. It almost makes you wonder why God gave the gift of gab to women, but not so much to men. =)

Although I cannot drink coffee, or have anything that contains caffeine any more, [due to an involuntary movement disorder that came upon me in March of 2006, out of the blue], I can truly understand what you are "talking" about. As, mind you, I did enjoy coffee [especially the flavored kinds], to the max before these health issues came upon me, especially if it was combined with eating chocolate. =) Unfortunately, these days, I can't have either one of those scrumptious delicacies; humbug!

However, I do know that God must have some specific reason as to why caffeine causes this movement disorder to worsen dramatically when I eat or drink caffeinated beverages and food items, though.
[But, I have a feeling that He may choose to make me wait to find out why this is until I see Him face to face].

But, through it all, I feel that He has taught me how to simply enjoy His presence, and how to depend on him fully, as I tend to "cling to Jesus like 'Super glue'" these days, which I consider to be a great blessing; even though this problem tends to make my life more difficult these days.

So, have another cup of that yummy coffee for me, would you, please???

Lots of love and hugs to you, my dear sister!

In Christ,

Jennifer O.

The Lord definitely knows what He's doing, Miss Beth. I would have made a pitiful excuse for a man. I'm too into my nonfat decaf vanilla lattes (with regular whip on top, of course) to not be a woman.

What I wouldn't have given to be stashed in one of those wingbacks with you, talking weddings, Queen Amidala up-dos, grandbabies (or babies in general, since mine still are), paint colors, furniture arrangements, shoes... oh, I could go on and on and on.

Yes, it is most definitely good to be a woman. Being girly is entirely too, too much fun!

My husband has commented to me that he is a bit envious of the female ability to just chat, talk, move past the awkward small-talk. While he's not a touchy-feely guy, I have seen in him a bit of envy, too, at our ability to be intimate and share "real" stuff with one another. I really believe that men long for those connections, but they are harder to come by.

I will say, though, that the most successful examples of male bodning i have seen have been in a Christian context. There are good, solid men's ministries out there and leaders who make a point of creating environments where men can be real and open with one another. Another working of the Holy Spirit and proof that life in Christ *is* different than life in the world.

Thanks for the great story, Miss Beth!

Well, gotta go brew myself a fresh pot - I'm all in the mood now to taste and see that it is good!

If you were a few miles north up here in Fort Worth I would swear you saw my husband. Yep, he doesn't talk either. And from someone whose love language is most definitely words, I have spent a long time feeling lonely and unloved. But we're working on that. Or rather, I'm working on that because he's still not talking. His mother even called me the other day to ask me why her son doesn't talk to her! I don't know, maybe because he could never get a word in edgewise around you as a kid? No, I didn't say that, I just wanted to. So when I got home I gave him an earful and told him he'd better start talking to his mama so she will stop calling me because I most definitely do NOT want to talk to her!

You gotta love guys - five words for every 17,654 words out of the mouth of us gals.

What was God thinking? (It must have been so quiet in the garden with Adam just there by himself that God decided to really ramp up the Eve's ability to chat. Who knows? But we can sure wonder).

Always happy to share a few words with my Siesta sisters,

On an unrelated, although I think timely note, I wanted to thank you, Miss Beth, for never getting "political" in your ministry. As someone who is outside the "norm" politically in the North American Christian "world" it is always a real turn-off for me when Bible teachers use their pulpit as a means of furthering a political agenda. So thank you for abstaining from that so that politics doesn't get in the way of unity in Christ.

Don't feel like you have to post this, by the way, if you don't feel it is topical or appropriate, just really wanted to say that to you.

You're too funny.

(My husband just turned to me without knowing what I'm reading and said, "I think I need another cup of coffee." He's a one a day, sort of man. Have to grin.)

If the Holy Spirit gives you courage, you may tell them that you're doing a simple poll...wondering what they think there is a God?

Sorry...I cannot resist! The evangelism streak runs deep and hard.

That will stir things up BEFORE the caffine hits.

"Anyway, I don't even think they were real coffee drinkers. Out of the corner of my discerning eye, I saw no pause for reflection after a single sip. Dead giveaway that they were posers."

I loved that line...I like my coffee with a big over stuffed chair...not on the go. And don't even get me started on to go cups...I like mine in a mug, big enough for me to wrap my hands around.

They were so posers!!!

So here is to hair color, lip gloss, undergarments that hide "stuff", high heels, and catching our mans eye...priceless girly stuff posers would never understand.

Sipping away at home, with my baby niece asleep in my arms...LOVING BIG FOR SURE!!!

Hehehehe....how much you want to bet these two don't really knwo each other but their wives had to meet up somewhere nearby to shop for something. Which would've been far too painful for them to tag along so coffee seemed like the best manly avoidance technique. And there they are, even more awkward than if they'd had to answer "Does this make my hips look big?" while perched on the tuffet outside the dressing room...heheheheee:) Yay for being a girl!! :)

Beth,
I have loved seeing the photographs, reading the recollections and picturing Melissa and Colin's big day in my mind.
But, this post is for another reason. Our school has had 7 snow days these past two weeks...and today, I'm a momma at the end of my rope.
When I read your words in the previous blog, I couldn't help but think of my two that are downstairs at this moment fighting over any and everything.
I guess these are one of those moments to "ponder"...although it feels more like a moment to "pound". :-)

Oh Beth,
THat is hilarious. Women can talk about anything. I can find out someone's life story in 15 minutes when my husband can't find out anything in 30 minutes. That is definitely a fun thing about being a woman.

I thought you would love this. I heard on James Dobson that in ancient Hebrew times the husband took and entire year off to take care of his wife and tend to the new household. How about that. I loved hearing about Melissa's wedding. Blessings to all of you.

Love it! I've always said I love being a woman! I love curling my hair, panting my nails and toes, crying at commercials, getting all giddy over the littlest things - (like my "friend" and mentor Beth sharing something that makes her smile in a coffee shop) and men just don't get it. They laugh at us, they look at us in astonishment... but maybe it's really awe.

Why even go have coffee if you're not going to talk with whoever it is you're having coffee with? We all know coffee (or tea, if you're a tea drinker like myself) is merely a side note to the whole visit anyway. You have coffee or tea to CONVERSE with someone.

I do have to say the most encouraging comment for me in this season of my life was taking heart for the mother of fighting siblings. I have three wonderful young boys, but some days I find myself thinking "Will they ever love each other the way God wants them to?" I feel so blessed, but some days I need to run to the nearest coffee shop and pretend I'm on vacation!

Also our Women's Ministry at church is on it's third study, we have been restored by Breaking Free inspirired by Daniel in our Babylon and now growing our Faith through Believing God.

How many siestas will be in Vancouver, BC, next weekend? I'll be there -- with my grown-up all married, living in different parts of the country girls. It's our first conference together, and I can't wait to spend this time with them!

-Chocolate is just another snack.
-You can open all of your own jars.
-Your underwear is $8.95 for a three-pack.
-You can wear shorts no matter what how your legs look.
-New shoes don't cut, blister, or mangle your feet.
-A 5 day vacation requires only one suitcase.
-You are unable to see wrinkles in your clothes.
-Three pairs of shoes are more than enough.
-The same hairstyle lasts for years.

Hilarious! My husband always gives me a hard time because women tend to talk about intimate things (bras, menopause, pregnancy, etc.)so frequently. He would NEVER discuss 98 percent of the things my girlfriends and I do. Let alone the things that men do. When he tells me how meetings at work go I just shake my head and tell him that he's lucky he still has a job. And that he works primarily with men who are wired like him. He needs me more than he knows.

I know he fuly understands us though because we were made after His image and that give me hope that He is a talker to, won't conversation in heaven be wonderful!
Thanks for the post Beth.
Be blessed

Too funny! This is exactly how my husband operates in a coffee shop. He has quit going to them with me. He says he feels like a fish out of water! We have actually had arguements over the fact that he doesn't know how to have coffee, indeed, he doesn't even like to drink the stuff! I love that about him!

Thank you for sharing all the wedding info with us. It's so fun to read. I normally wouldn't write this to you, but the Lord is laying it heavy on my heart to search for any prayers I can get. My 91-year-old grandma has had several heart attacks throughout the last week. She is doing, for the most part, OK, but has "episodes" of bad chest pains and there's really not much that can be done. She mostly has these in the night hours and they can give her a Nitro patch, but it takes 30 min to kick in and then once it's on, it lowers her blood pressure too much, so it needs to be removed. It's really a vicious cycle. She is in Omaha, NE. My mom and dad drove to Omaha yesterday to be with here. Mom and Aunt Linda are with Grandma in the hospital at all times now. (Which means they are sleeping there on "cots" as well.) At moments you wouldn't know much is wrong with grandma and at others she is just pleading with God to release her from this pain and suffering. She doesn't understand why the Lord isn't taking her home. I am asking for you to pray for Grandma to be comfortable and for God to go ahead and call her home. She's ready. Pray also for the strength and comfort of my mom and Aunt as this is emotional and physically draining and stressful on them. I really appreciate your prayer. Thank you!

Oh Beth! I so totally love how you are! I would have been really tempted to help the conversation too, I have no inhibitions when it comes to striking up conversations with total strangers. This is absolutely one of the things that makes me glad God made me a woman. It is exciting to consider how our God is the God of relationships, and how relational He made women to be. What a gift to see an element of His beautiful character expressed through us ladies without any effort on our part! He is so cool!!

Yes, Beth, you were on to them. They couldn't have been real coffee drinkers. If they were they would have known to at least talk about the quality of the coffee they were partaking. No brainer. Posers - and in the worst kind of way - tapping on the top of their coffee cup but not thinking to discuss what was in the cup. I, on the other hand, was nominated as "customer of the week" at our local Starbucks. They actually extended it two weeks - bless them. This honor is given to the people who come in way too often for coffee, so much so the employees pitty you. When you're customer of the week you get free drinks. I've got the stuff coming out my pores now. I went in today and noticed they picked another "customer of the week". I almost wept. I fought bitterness. I allowed myself a moment of grief. I mean my name was no longer on the customer of the week board that hangs by the cashier, this was going to take a moment to adjust to - so sad. I wiped away the tears, then I ordered my coffee: venti non-fat misto extra hot with no foam. I paid for it. Talked to a couple of strangers nearby and then went to jail to teach my Bible class. O, how the inmates wish for me to bring in a bunch of Starbucks coffee for everyone. I think it may take more than being customer of the week to make that happen! I mean I don't have THAT much coming out of my pores.

Beth,
I'm glad you are "you". You are one of the few people I "know" or sort of in blogville, that has a running dialogue constantly in their head like I do.

My husband will sometimes just say, "Just relax. Don't think so much".

I really can't help it. I try to figure out anything and everything when I am around people. I think I have always done that since I was a very small child.

When you come from a dysfunctional home life, you tend to live in your own imaginary world.

Boy that sounds like I have a "disassociative disorder". I don't. Thank GOD. I just loved make-believe and I still do.

Love and prayers from a cartoon buddy in the blogosphere :-)

Men are so funny! A few weeks ago the men in our small group decided to get together and watch a movie-they weren't particular which movie to see, so they just made up a time to meet. Low and behold there was nothing playing for another hour except 27 dresses!! Rather than go home they all snuck in the movie theater to watch the movie, hoping not to be seen. But get this---they wouldn't even sit by each other, so they made sure to keep a chair in between each of them. They must have looked hilarious!! They originally told us they watched Rambo, then they came clean. Men are strange creatures!!
Beth, thanks for keeping us real and for sharing just everyday events. We love it out here in Siesta land!

Can you just imagine the difference if it had been two women who sat down at your table? I've got to admit that Valentine's Day was so funny at my local Kroger. My husband and I took separate buggies and headed on a scavenger hunt down the aisles...we were having a picnic for our Valentine's dinner. I finished first and was sitting in the car while he secretly bought a few things for the picnic, too. It was late afternoon and the men were so funny to watch as they headed in for last minute gifts. Bouquets of flowers, teddy bears, cards. Men are the most fun to watch trying to hold a bouquet of flowers!! It's like they are poison...or maybe they are invisible. I had fun and I'm glad I married a real man that feels funny doing silly things but he loves me and he does them for me to please me. I'm glad I'm a woman and I'm thankful for my man.

I think you should have helped the guys out with their conversation. Maybe they were there trying to connect to their "feminine side" and really wanted to have a meaningful conversation with other, they just didn't know how. Poor things. I am sooooo glad I'm a woman.

Amen to being a woman. Because right now we have a major fashion decision to make. Easter. Through out my life, I have bought a new Easter outfit. The last couple of years my Easter outfit has had to remain in the closet to make its maiden voyage because it has been so blasted cold.

I live in the DFW area which means, that the weather can change on a dime. Last year I wore boots because it was so cold.

I am thinking this year with Easter being early, I am going to save money and wait until afterwards and then buy a new spring rig. Hopefully, I can buy something on sale.

I wonder what those two men would have thought about that subject?? :)

Oh you blessed me with this post! I just giggled. Can I give a shout out to girlfriends, too! There's nothing like them. I have a monthly girls dinner & several years ago, my father, near death, forced me out of his hospital room to go be with my girls. 10 minutes after I arrived at the dinner, one of my childhood friends arrived with a list - unbeknownst to me, the whole gaggle of them had gotten together to figure out who would take care of my pets at my apartment and leave me food so that I could go straight from work to the hospital every day without worry. What a blessing! And guys, no matter how wonderful they are, just don't think of that stuff! Dad, praise God, came through and my crisis ended. But now, that same group of girlfriends has a sista in crisis - doctors found a tumor in her 33 year old brain last week. Once again, the girlfriends have rallied - sitting with her, sharing Scripture with her & each other, praying over her and just caring for her. Thank God for girlfriends!

Oh me too! As a history buff, I've often lamented the way our gender has been under-valued in different societies, but never once did I say, "If I lived in that era, I'd want to be a man." Alas, the poor guys at the next table are missing out on so much...

How can men be so awkward? To ask for a seat by you and not even talk. How boring is that? Me and my best friend talk about nothing all the time. There is always something to talk about. And you can bet if we had the nerve to sit down with a stranger (even though YOU wouldn't be a stranger to us because we know all about your business-being a siesta and all), we would at least have the courtesy to make small talk until the person seemed annoyed or got up and left us there. The only conclusion is: their wives made them use all their words for the day before they left the house. And when their quota is met it's over.

I'd give just about anything for a quiet moment at a coffee house (3 small children - not a lot of hope for that) - even if it was awkward - which it wouldn't be because when 2 women get together, there's no such thing as awkward silence.
Can't wait for San Antonio! I'm going all by myself. It's my 1st trip alone. Ever. A little nervous, but really excited about some serious quiet time. Who knows, might meet a Siesta or 2 out there!
As always, love ya, Moore people.

Siesta-
Men simply don't "do life" like us women. Sometimes I wish they could truly experience as we do. Sharing the joys, heartaches, struggles, frustrations, families, children, work etc. is at the heart of who we are as women. No straining, searching for words or painstakingly quiet moments. It matters not whether we are life long friends or Siesta's in Christ the bond is there.

I had to share my experience this morning during an extended quiet time with the Lord. I fell head over heels madly in love with Jesus afresh. The Word literally lept off the pages of my bible and into my heart. That Word being alive and active. God spoke directly to my heart and for sometime on many things I might add. I wish I could say it happens all the time but it doesn't. His Living Word became the healing balm, word of wisdom, confirmation, 2-way communication & comfort that I desparately needed this day.

It amazes me that the God inspired Word penned by men thousands of years ago was given for such a time as this and taylored just for me. The letters of Paul & John spoke so tenderly, so personal, so on spot to what I am going through. How my Creator cares about the very details of my life humbles me beyond what words can express.

I read "The Prisoner in the 3rd Cell" Very Inspirational. Definitely a keeper to read again and again.

I too love being a girl.
Here's to girl power. Whoohoo
Mady
ps...I had to retype this because somehow I lost it when I tried to publish.

Oh, by the way...if you want to read a good book try Blessed Child by Ted Dekker and Bill Bright....it's thought provoking...
