Wedding Weekend Recap

What a weekend. My baby sister is married and is sitting on a beach with her new husband. I spoke to her for 2.5 seconds on Monday morning and she was about to lay out and get a drink with a little umbrella in it. She sounded so happy.

I guess I should start from the beginning. Jackson, thank God, never got sick with a stomach bug that hit Curt and I right before the big week. We were able to travel to Houston on Wednesday as planned. I didn't make it to MOPS that day, but inside I knew I probably wouldn't. I had my last personal training session and although the whole thing was really challenging, I will miss it. I love what it did for my arms and legs. I may ask Curt for a punching bag and some boxing gloves for Valentine's Day, which we haven't celebrated yet.

THURSDAY

The wedding gears started turning on Thursday. That morning Mom and I swore that we would not eat at any restaurant that we liked, nor would we eat any food that we really wanted. We had to focus on the goal of looking as good as possible in our dresses. So we planned on devoting ourselves to Jason's Deli (which we prefer not to frequent). We never made it there once. Instead, we got chicken tender salads at Chick-fil-a. We both hate eating salads. I actually ate two salads last week and that should show anyone who knows me the depth of my sacrifice. In our despair, we swore that Sunday would be known as Fat Sunday. We would eat anything and everything that we wanted in celebration of having met our wedding fitness goals. We could not wait.

That afternoon my mom picked up two of Melissa's bridesmaids from the airport and got them checked in to the Hilton. Thus began the whirlwind. Melissa and I met the girls at their hotel at 7 p.m. for Girls Night Out. Then we went to Cafe Adobe on Westheimer for dinner. (It was Valentine's night, so we were really limited in where we could go. We would have loved America's.) The diet was out the window. After that we went to the Dessert Gallery. We had some yummy treats and then headed to the airport to pick up another bridesmaid. It might not sound like that exciting of a night, but we did all of this in a black limo and it was extra fun! Melissa and I got home at 11:30 and found a really cool gift waiting for her there. It looked like a wedding cake. We had to open it up immediately. That was such a fun moment.

FRIDAY

The next morning my lovely, blessed, beloved mother-in-law and sister-in-law flew in and became Jackson's primary caregivers for the weekend. It was amazing. I cannot convey the amount of stress it took off me. What a blessing. Curtis was in charge of the ceremony, so we really did need some help. That it could be family was just perfect! Especially since Jackson's birthday was Sunday.

At 9 a.m. on Friday, Melissa and I picked up the bridesmaids and we all went to Norris of Houston Spa and Salon for mani-pedi's and 30 minute massages, compliments of the M-O-B. She is a generous lady, that M-O-B! Afterward we had lunch at the Backstreet Cafe. I had never been there before. The food was great. I had cheese grits and shrimp. Oh my word. Yes, the diet was definitely out the window. The last bridesmaid to arrive came during lunch, as did Melissa's BFF from Wheaton, Kevin. He was basically a bridesman, but he was there to read Scripture in the wedding. Melissa had been very intense but when he got there she was able to relax and laugh like her normal self. I think it also helped that she knew every last person had made it safely. I'm sure Kevin loved being the only man at the bridal luncheon. Thankfully it was not your traditional, Southern bridal luncheon.

At that point I was nearly comatose from exhaustion, but I had to go pick up Melissa's bridal portrait and convince the photographer to give me a digital file to put on the blog. Mission accomplished. They were so accommodating. When I saw her portrait it was like a bolt of lightning hit me. I was stunned by how gorgeous she was. Every single person in my family had the same reaction. Especially my dad. I'll never forget how he gasped, took a step backward, and put his hand on his heart.

On Friday night my whole family hopped in my hubby's suburban and headed completely across town in rush hour traffic. We were late to the rehearsal, of course. We all recalled being late to mine, too. What can you do? The rehearsal was painless. Afterward we went to Ouisie's Table for the rehearsal dinner. Besides my own, it was the neatest rehearsal dinner I've ever been to. What a neat restaurant and what good food! Yes, I know. The diet. Oh well. I was seated with my Pappaw and he and I have always loved to eat chicken fried steak together. Yes, I ate a CFC the night before the wedding. I hate myself. One time in jr. high, when I had super human metabolism, I spent spring break with my Memaw and Pappaw. Somehow that week I managed to eat CFC every single day. Someone turn me in to the Guinness people.

Melissa and Colin did the neatest thing during their rehearsal dinner. Colin works for the company that owns Marble Slab Creamery and he sells franchises for them. So Colin had an actual marble slab, along with lots of sweet cream ice cream and strawberries, brought to the restaurant. At the end of the meal, he and Melissa put on little Marble Slab aprons and served ice cream to all of their guests. If you've never been to Marble Slab before, they scoop out the ice cream and mash it on the slab with the strawberries or whatever other topping you get. It makes it taste so good. I didn't have any ice cream, so three cheers for me.

We headed home and put the bride to bed. We were all so tired already and the big day wasn't even here yet.

SATURDAY

The next morning Melissa woke up at 5:00 and couldn't go back to sleep. Bless her heart. Mom, figuring that any repercussions wouldn't show up that day, got a huge box of Shipley donuts and kolaches for us for breakfast. She had a severe case of Moorder (which is when the Moore's order more than they need. We do it every time) and managed to spend $25 on donuts. The cashier nearly threw confetti on her.

A limo took Mom, Melissa, and me to the church and we started getting ready. The wedding was at South Main Baptist Church by the way. (HFBC was booked for that date.) Wow, it does not get prettier than that for a Baptist Church. So beautiful. It is so dumb how early you have to get ready for weddings. It just makes for such a long day, although I don't know how you get around it. It was like pulling teeth for Melissa to push back the time as much as she did. A makeup and hair person was there to take care of us. She was wonderful. We went through every single emotion in the hours that followed: joy, bliss, stress, nervousness, nausea, and excitement. Once Melissa got her hair done and the flowers arrived, she was able to settle down a bit. We played the CD I had made for our Girls Night Out and it lightened the mood. I felt bad playing "Let's Get It On" in a church, but when you have a couple who has put off relations until their wedding night, you get to be lighthearted and happy about it. God wanted them to get it on. And that's all I have to say. Thank You, Jesus.

Right before the ceremony began, we made a circle around Melissa and her friend Erin prayed. Erin immediately started crying and Mom and I looked at each other and whispered, "Don't do it!" I had to look up and keep my eyes open to control myself. Soon they called mom out and then it was time for the rest of us. I was suddenly very nervous. The fact that Curt was doing the ceremony added to my nerves. When we got to the foyer, Travis Cottrell was singing "Forevermore." Lis and I watched through a small window and I could tell that Travis could see us. Melissa was pumping her fists in the air because how can you not when you hear Travis sing? It was a-w-e-s-o-m-e. Those 3 minutes were my favorite of the whole weekend. That is the snapshot I will keep in my heart.

I walked down the aisle and the flower girl quickly followed. She waved to everyone like a beauty queen and it was so precious. Then out came Dad and Melissa. I can't describe my emotions to you. I was about to burst. I was half laughing, half crying (without tears because I did not want to mess up my makeup), and half wanting to pump my own fist in the air. (Don't judge my math.) They were a gorgeous pair and they were headed to a very excited groom. I loved watching Colin's face. He always looks at her so lovingly. The ceremony was short and sweet and very meaningful. I thought Curtis did a great job.

After pictures, we headed to Brennan's of Houston for the reception. Everything looked amazing. My sister had worked so hard and the atmosphere was incredible. I could not believe how beautiful it was. Her colors were brown and white and there were lanterns at the center of each table. The table linens were spectacular and all the chairs were covered. Brennan's is a New Orleans restaurant and the look of the ballroom "evokes visions of a New Orleans carriage house with vaulted ceilings, skylights, and crystal chandeliers." I just copied that from the web site.

For dinner we had lobster bisque, salad, steak and fish, bananas foster, wedding cake, and groom's cake. It was out of control. A quartet played music through dinner. At that time, Jackson had a moment to shine on the dance floor with our cousin Carleigh, a.k.a. the cutest flower girl ever. Soon Melissa and Colin danced to "The Luckiest" by Ben Folds Five. They looked very happy. Then Lis and Dad danced to "My Girl." They did so good! When Colin and his mom danced, I nearly cried thinking of Jackson and I looked over at Johnnie, who is my mom's BFF and mom to two grown sons, and she was bawling. Everyone gave her a hard time but I think it's just tender being a boy mom.

The DJ played old, classic slow-dance songs. The dance floor was full every time I looked over at it. It was fun seeing the guests enjoy themselves. It was also just really special to have such close friends there with us.

The best man and I each gave a toast toward the end of the night. I was super nervous, but tried not to care that my hands were obviously shaking as I read my speech off a piece of paper. I'm too tired to try and write it all out and I'm not sure I would anyway, but Melissa said she liked it. I was glad I got to do it.

Soon it was time for Colin and Melissa to go. Since we were at a restaurant, there wasn't really a way to throw flower petals at them as they rushed out to the car. Instead, people said goodbye to them in the reception room. They had to go down a big staircase to exit and of course Mom, Dad and I, along with Colin's family, went down to see them off. I made it down first and there were some people sitting in a lounge at the bottom of the stairs. They were marveling at the beautiful princess coming down the stairs and I looked at them and said, "That's my baby sister!" I was so proud.

It was raining when we got outside and Colin held a huge umbrella over his new bride. They were so sweet. Then they got into their limo and were whisked away! We left shortly after and we have been thinking and talking about it ever since. It was a wonderful weekend and a magical night. The Lord truly blessed us.

We had no idea there were tornado watches or warnings around town. The Lord made us completely oblivious. For that I am so thankful! The weather didn't have much of an impact on things, except that we had to adjust our hairstyles accordingly. I had planned on wearing mine down, but definitely not in that weather.

I have more to say and show, but I am all typed out for now! And I'm saving Jackson's stories for later.

That had to have been the world's longest wedding recap. Well, it was my baby sister's wedding! What did you expect?

I was so worried about the storms we were having in Houston on Saturday. I'm glad they didn't bother the wedding festivities.

Thanks for all the details! It could never be too long- I devour wedding stories, especially such a good one! I appreciate your sacrifice with the salads- seriously, what kind of food is that anyway? I loved that the ride was a limo(sweet!) and, wow, an actual marble slab! I'm so glad I have Ben Fold's "The Luckiest" on my iTunes. I'd never heard it before and I'm loving listening to it now. :)

Oh Amanda, what a wonderful time. Your recap explained all the pictures and made them all that much more precious. I knew that it would be so special - it's just so cool to hear details. And your comment about doing math reminded me who was writing to us. Not because of your math abilities but because of your humor. Thank you. Rest now.

I love the recap! I laughed when I read that you had "Let's Get it On" on your Girls' Night CD. One of my fiance's friends will be singing at our wedding in August, and he asked us if he could sing it during the ceremony. I vetoed that one, and a few other's... I had to make sure that Madonna's "Like a Virgin" will not be sung as I walk down the aisle!

And then there were romantic sighs from girls everywhere!

Brings me back to our day a year and a half ago. It's true about the "whole gamut of emotion" (Chonda quote out of context).

This makes a bride want to go home and make out with her groom! We NEED to go back to that sweet remembering place; we NEED to maintain that newlywed glow. I am so grateful for my marriage, and I praise God also for this brand new one!

Amanda, I would love to give you the biggest hug right now. I'm half in tears, half laughing hysterically, half reliving, and half daydreaming. (don't judge my math) I'm in tears and daydreaming because I cannot wait for my baby sister to get married and lavish all that attention and joy on her. She's kind of sassy, so she'll probably demand "Let's Get it On" be played nonstop for the week prior to her wedding. I'm laughing hysterically about the "Lets Get it On," but you have it totally right -- God deserves all the praise and glory in waiting that long and He does want us to...especially that night. Oh I can't wait for my baby sister! So much love to all you guys!

I know there is an old wives tale about it being good luck if it rains on your wedding day - I guess they are in for lots of wonderful adventures if there were tornado watches!!! :)

Bless all of you! Prayers as you switch gears back into your "normal" ;) routines!

I am loving the details of the wedding. I myself woke up early Saturday morning and before my feet hit the floor I said to the Lord, "Melissa's getting married today!" For one split second I thought, "What should I wear today" and then I ended up in sweatpants cleaning my house. Make no mistake, I was dressed up in spirit and many of the details that you talked about were poured over in prayer. Praise Him!

You Moores are just so real. What a blessing to us real siestas out here! I'm cracking up at the CFC moment with Pappaw and "Let's Get It On" and Beth in her gorgeous dress cooking Atkins for the dog. Speaking of the now-famous song, I'm so glad that you are willing to just be out there with the wonderful reality of married s*x (can I type that on a Christian website?); I think if Christian ladies felt more at liberty to discuss such things, God would indeed be glorified! I know He is rejoicing over all of you, especially that beautiful pair on the beach...

Amanda,
Thanks so very much for the recap and all the photos. What a fun, amazing time you all had. Our oldest son lives in Houston and often spends Saturdays at his school (he is a Teach for America teacher), his classroom is a trailer. When there are storm warnings, we often call him from our cozy home in Illinois, to let him know, as he is oblivious.
We called him back around 8pm to see how is day went. I asked about the weather, because of the wedding. These are his words:

Mom, it was the strangest thing. The whole tornado thing just dissipated and there werent really any big problems. It is just raining. The weather people are baffled!

I started laughing and told him that I knew the explanation. Beth Moore's prayer warriors had been praying all over that day because of the wedding and God had heard our prayers!!

Just thought you would enjoy the story.

I hope you could enjoy Jackson's birthday.

You have a wonderful way of describing things in a way you feel like you were there. Thanks for sharing those moments and pictures with the women who love this family. I especially like the picture of Beth getting ready to serve up something for Beanie. We love our animals and this reminds me so much of my mother. She lives with us and as we sit down to eat she is up making sure her "babies" have something to eat before she does. A true servant heart if I ever saw one!

What a precious gift to share with us all of the details. My eyes are full of tears as I thank you for including us...particularly during the weekend where your focus could have been completely on the events at hand! So thank you again for giving us all of those details we have been so hungry for. And to "see" the wedding through your eyes Amanda, well as a big sister who just went through her baby brother's wedding, that was an extra special treat for me!

Thanks so much for giving us the recap! I used to wonder why so many people cried at weddings until after I got married a dozen years ago. Now I understand. It is so touching to see or read about that beautiful time in a couple's life, especially when the couple has dedicated themselves to our Father. It is so amazing! And, of course, it brings back memories of my own wedding, and, bang - the tears start flowing! It sounds like you and Melissa are both extremely blessed with the men God led you to. Many blessings on all of y'all!

I had the news on this morning as they were discussing celeb's and their desire for utmost privacy and I have to say that I am so grateful to the Father for the freedom He gives to share our lives with one another - His children! Thank you, Moore's for being so willing to let us in! Though we weren't able to pull up to the table there, our hearts were with you all on that day.

Pics are B-U-tiful!!! Can't wait to see that little prince of yours, Amanda!

Thanks again -

I read every word and loved every minute of it. Wouldn't you know that I had to log off in the middle to have my Psalms of ascent lecture #3 for my college kids that I disciple. Then excitingly returned to this to resume and conclude. Oh and wouldn't you know the kids had an amazing break through. I am in love with the Word I mean head over heels and have been passionately trying to pass that torch and the Lord drew me to the #3 lecture and they sat through it in their ADDish attention spans. Well long story short, they got it! Not to eat seed, sow it. The Word they all are desiring for the first time to want to gain wisdom from the Word. My cup overflows! Not to mention I came right back to this sweet moment in your families life and rejoice once again in the freedom and blessings you have been afforded by the grace of God I am so moved to tears, you have lived the thing out in front of us, in front of me. My love is so deep for you and I am so kindred to your story. Okok I am done, I am just overjoyed at this significant moment in your family.

So was this Curtis' first wedding? My husband is a young pastor as well and his first wedding was my brother's in September. We were all nervous and ready for the wedding to begin. More than half way through it my cousin pointed out that we were still STANDING! My husband forgot to tell us we could sit down!!! I was trying to get his attention to tell us to sit down and when I finally got eye contact with him there was whispering from the bride and groom and they all looked at me. The best man then came down and asked me where the vows were. Oh my! I had thrown them in the TRASH! After we made it through them winging their vows, the unity candle would not light. My husband then went and took another candle and was going to switch them. As he blew out the candle, it absolutely blew up in his face and all down his body. Everyone couldn't help but start laughing after we knew he was okay.
To top it off, when we were being introduced at the reception, there were two steps to walk down. My precious family (me sister of groom, husband is the minister and my two and four year old boys were ring "bears") was walking and my two year old, who was holding my hand, decided it would be cool to jump. He brought me down to the floor on my back in my little strapless dress. Needless to say, it was one of the most embarrassing things of my life.
I have never actually written any of this down before and can't believe how untrue it sounds and how true it was! I have pictures and all!
Needless to say, I hope Curtis had a better experience than my sweet husband!

As an animal lover it is fun to see that Beanie is not forgotten! Ever need a babysitter for Beanie, bring her to Arkansas and you got a deal!

What an awesome recap! Thanks for not leaving out any detail. Too long? We are women, we EXPECT long! I was praying for you here in Houston while I was watching the storms. So thankful that God steered them clear from ya'll. Many blessings "on ya!"

Amanda,
Thanks so much for sharing. I totally understand getting sentimental watching Colin dance with his mom. It is a boy mom thing, and I'm right there with you!

What a wonderful recap! Makes all of us feel like we are apart of yalls family! Thanks

I have just finished up the study on the Psalms of Asents and I have to tell you it was so neat to hear about Melissa telling Beth how she thought God would bring her future husband to her down "the broken road" and to know what God honored her and did indeed bring her a great man!
Praise God
Blessings and Smooches!

How exciting, wonderful & beautiful! I thought about you guys off and on all day that Saturday and would just send up a little prayer in those moments. (I'm sure all the siestas were doing the same.) Thank you for sharing with us. It is so much fun to be able to celebrate with you!

Amanda - that was too much fun to read (you, my dear, are a lovely and funny writer!) Thanks for taking the time to share (like we would have let you back on here without all the details! Smile).

Hope you're catching some rest and Melissa is catching some rays,

Oh, that was wonderful! As I read it I went through all those wedding emotions too, excitement, nervousness, etc. My own wedding will be in 50 days (yes!!!!), and it was an enormous blessing to catch a glimpse into Melissa's. Reading the excitement on the blog, as well as seeing someone else's pure love, has been so encouraging. Oh, our God is so good! Let them "get it on" to His glory for years to come!!!!

Thanks for sharing your memories. I just want to say that I love the LProof blog but I have 1 comment. There are a lot of statements in this post referring to dieting, not eating to fit into a dress, and praise for limiting your food intake and then planning to binge. I just want to say (gently because I honor you all at LProof and know that you mean well) that this can be very difficult to read for women like me who are recovering from serious eating disorders.

Thanks for listening.

Amanda,

Thank you for answering a question for me. I kept thinking that the picture of Melissa & Colin dishing up ice cream was them, but I couldn't come up with a scenario for why they would be. (Grin)

Sounds like you all had a marvelous time. What a blast.

I'll continue to pray the newlyweds will have a safe and enjoyable honeymoon.

I'm also looking forward to those Jackson stories.

Many blessings!

Anna

Miss Beth,

Oh how my heart is tendered.

There are times when I feel like life goes by like a whirlwind. I cherish the moments when time seems to stand still. I love to "be in and feel the moment."

Those times when God helps me to pull back and see the bigger picture. To sense an opportunity to soak up the memories and recognize the need to hold on to the moment for a bit.

Then it's gone and lives move on. Yet the LORD gifts me with the ablitltiy to appreciate how precious those moments were. To reminisce and cherish them.

I feel that is what you all (you, Amanda, & Melissa) do and have done for us. Thank you for casting these memories together, pondering them & then sharing them with us.

How sweet, how precious they are. It makes me think of the verse out of Isaiah 52:7, "How beautiful on the mountains are the feet of those who bring good news, who proclaim peace, who bring good tidings, who proclaim salvation, who say to Zion, 'Your God reigns!"

With much love in Christ,

Anna

But hearing about ya'll heal and fill my heart. Thanks for sharing! I thought of ya'll often Saturday. I'm glad the weather didn't hamper the day. Love you all! God bless!

Amanda,
Your portrayal of the pre-wedding and wedding was so vivid--my stomach was in knots until I read up to the Reception. Whew! I felt like I was right there. I'm so happy everything turned out well. Your mother has two daughters that are treasures!

Amanda, can you post the playlist for the "Girls Night" CD you made for Melissa's wedding weekend? I'm working on putting a CD together for my wedding in 6 weeks, and I'd love to steal some song ideas from you! If you'd rather not post them online, my email is [stephkuykendallatgmaildotcom}
