Pony Tales

When I was a kid we used to celebrate my birthday at a steak house called Taste of Texas. These days it's a great big restaurant that is so popular you have to wait for two hours to get a table. But back then it was dimly lit, intimate restaurant in the shadow of Town and Country Mall. I cared nothing about steak, but there was a horse-drawn carriage at the restaurant that would take you on a nice little tour of the area after dinner. This was the number one reason we went to Taste of Texas every year. To put it mildly, I was obsessed with horses. Truly obsessed.

I would spend a great deal of my birthday dinner outside the restaurant petting Bob the horse and talking to the carriage driver. As soon as dessert was eaten, my dad would join me outside and we'd pay the carriage driver to take us around. It was the highlight of my birthday. One year (I think I was turning 9) my dad was explaining my out of control love for horses to the driver and somehow by an act of God the woman offered to sell us a pony for $75. This pony's name was Coco and the woman and her family had used him for pony parties. I was ecstatic. It was the happiest day of my entire life. I could not believe my dad said yes!

Very soon we went to meet Coco at this family's farm. I was immediately smitten with my equine friend. As they say, love is blind and this love was no exception. I did not allow the fact that the first time I sat on him, he went to the bathroom, or that he then squished my leg up against a pine tree, to cloud the glory of my horse ownership.

It was not long before we moved Coco the Wonderhorse to our family farm in Waller, Texas. It was only a 40 minute drive from our house - an incredibly beautiful drive, in fact. My dad basically grew up on that farm and I think he enjoyed being there as much as I enjoyed my adventures on horseback.

Daddy took care of all the saddling and bridling. He would trot Coco and me around on a lead rope when I got bored of walking. He rescued me countless times when Coco ran me into a barbed wire fence (definitely intended for cows, not horses) or rubbed my leg against a tree trunk. That little pony was ornery. He knew exactly what he was doing but I was so infatuated I would never admit that he didn't genuinely love me and care for me.

Then there was that time when he took me under a low branch. I knew we were headed for trouble because the branch was definitely not high enough for me to duck under. He would not be steered away from it, so I closed my eyes and held my breath. Next thing I knew, I was laying on the ground. I'm sure my dad had some choice words for Coco the Wonderhorse, but all I can remember now is how he looked cutting the branch of that tree. I can still picture him - his black hair and his back to me, his arm going back and forth as he sawed it off.

Dad would show me different parts of the farm where he did this or that as a kid. He would tell me about riding his own Shetland pony out there - Pony B. Pony B was so bad, his legs had to be in restraints when he was ridden. One time the whole family thought it would be great to remove the restraints for my dad's turn to ride. Pony B took off like greased lightning toward a bull. My poor dad was probably terrified, but everyone looked on and cheered, "Ride him, Keith! Ride that Pony B!" I love how hard my dad laughs when my aunts and grandparents tell that story.

One ornery Shetland pony, one young dad, one young girl, one farm in Waller, one collection of amazing memories with the man who raised me.

My horse fascination continued up through junior high, when I upgraded to a quarter horse thanks to my Pappaw. Once boys entered the picture in high school, that season of my life drew to a close. Now, I would still put horseback riding on my list of hobbies. I still take any opportunity to ride that I can get. I still like to sketch horses on my worship bulletin at church sometimes. I still love the smell of horse sweat and would choose it over perfume any day. But that hyperventilate-with-excitement feeling did fade over the years. Which is probably best anyway.

What did not fade, what has in fact grown, is how much I love my daddy. The time we got to spend together driving out to the farm and riding that silly horse bonded this mama's girl and that young dad who wasn't sure his daughter needed him all that much. We had something special together that Mom and Melissa weren't a part of. Who knows what we talked about on those car rides, but I do remember chatting it up all the way. On the way home, we would stop at a little shack called JR's Chicken and get a huge Coke and a bucket of chicken. That place is no longer there, but we have often talked about how much we wish we could go back. Our family farm was sold years ago, but Dad and I have a standing date for a trail ride every time we go to the mountains.

Daddy, thank you for getting me a pony. I know now that Coco didn't really love me. That he didn't really deserve the title of Wonderhorse. That $75 for a horse of that caliber wasn't that much of a bargain. But I knew then and I know now that you love me. And you definitely deserve the title of Wonderdad. I love you with my whole heart. Happy 51st birthday.

Love,
Your goofy kid

Quite the tribute to your dad. Brought back memories of my dad while I was growing up on a cattle ranch in N. Calif. and a big ol' buckskin named Buck. He was cinchy and would have fallen over backwards on me if my dad had not grabbed the reins. I loved the riding time with Dad. Treasure it with yours!

What an awesome gift of your time and memories for a birthday present to your dad! It made me think of special times with my dad too. And then I thought how much our Heavenly Father loves the time we give HIM and the memories cherished about HIS faithfulness.

Happy Birthday, Keith!!! I hope you have many more wonderful birthdays with your three Moore Musketeers. They are such fun, and so beautiful...inside and outside. But God bless you for living with hair rollers, hair dryers, shoes, books, etc. God bless you especially for praying for those of us who have God-fearing husbands, but whose husbands don't pray with us. Your generosity of heart touches this heart and makes me cry in gratitude. You are, indeed, a sweetheart! Happy Birthday!!!

My Grandma and Papaw lived out in Waller on a farm and we went there ALL the time growing up. My uncle lives out there now...So fun! I love horses too, still to this day. I never owned one, or a pony for that matter...but I would have loved to. I love riding! They are the most awesome creatures I think God created. Just LOOK at them...aren't they incredible?! Their bodies and muscles and beautiful hair....I just love it. Thanks for sharing your sweet story about your Dad. I am a Daddy's girl!! I have lots of Daddy and Me stories...they are priceless memories. I think you have inspired me to write some of them out though so I can really remember them and their details, so I can oneday tell my kids about them. Thanks!

I just have to share a 'daddy' story of my own. Last Saturday, I was out in our wonderful Texas summer heat vacuuming out our suv. I had at least pulled it into the garage, to somewhat be in the shade. My 6yr old son, & my Daddy were just outside working on the tractor - major man stuff. At one point I needed to change the attachment on the shop vack, & it wouldn't budge. I pulled & yanked, even tried wrapping my feet around it so I could use both arms to pull. After working up even more of a Sweat - this is west Texas - my precious Daddy walked by for a tool, stopped & said - let me help. It took him less than 2 seconds to do what I'd been struggling with for too long. He just smiled that 'Daddy' smile & went on to his work. Then my Heavenly FATHER wispered in my ear - Daughter, it really is that simple, I'm here, I'm able - let me help. What a lesson. I believe I'll call that my shop vack sermon! 'cause it'll preach!! love ya girls! mistie woods -abilene

Daddy stories will ALWAYS touch me 'cause I loved/love mine -the hardest, most God-fearful, unselfish and proud giver ever. It had to be extremely hard to raise 3 girls all by himself, while ill. Daddies do the best job pointing their little ones to The Father by lovingly providing, taking care and looking out, don't they?

What precious memories you share with your dad!! There's absolutely nothing better you could have given him for his birthday than this tribute.

My dad and I had a similar shared activity that bonds us to this day in a way my sister or mother will never understand. And for that I'm so grateful.

So wish your dad a "Happy Birthday" and give a big Bday hug & smooch!!

Hi Amanda! Happy Birthday, Keith!

Amanda - Thanks for sharing such wonderful memories of your childhood :)

Keith - Happy, happy birthday! I feel a special affinity toward you b/c I'm married to a maverick-safari hunting - salmon fishing - Alaskan bear hunting West Texan so I love it anytime Beth tells tales of you (don't worry, they're always good... well, there was that little incident a few weeks back where she wasn't going to take your call - so how's this: there always REAL and they're usually real funny ta boot). Thanks for sharing your three favorite girls with all of us - I'm sure a lot of us siestas entertain the notion we're somehow kin to the Moore clan.

Blessings on your birthday - and may you have a HUGELY prosperous year on the hunting/fishing front,

That was a great tribute to your dad. I hope he has a great birthday.

My dad and I didn't have much of a relationship, and a lot of the memories I have of him aren't good ones. But when I was in high school he did take me to see my horse every Saturday. My mom took me during the week after school, but on Saturdays it was always my dad. He didn't know much about horses, but he liked animals and was patient enough to let me take as much time as I wanted. Those Saturdays at the stable are probably the best memories I have of my dad from that time period. At horse shows, he would be there to take pictures, some of which I still have. And when he could, he took the time to write on the back of my ribbons the date of the show and the name of the class it was from. I guess these were just his indirect ways of trying to show me that he loved me and was proud of me, even though his words and actions at other times would have suggested differently. I'm grateful that in the one thing that was more important to me than anything else at the time, he made an effort to support me. I'm sure it made a difference.
My dad died a few years ago, and with time and help from God, the painful memories have started to fade into the background. The good ones, the ones that show me that my dad really did love me, even if he rarely said it, have come to the forefront.

And I have to say that my love for horses has never subsided! I have had seasons of high involvement in the horse world, and seasons where the Lord has asked me to lay it down. Right now is a season of "laying it down". Maybe someday He will allow me to pick it up again. I just loved this story, because it shows how crazy-in-love we tend to be with our equine friends and partners, even when they are driving us crazy!

I had that same love of horses and my dad, who never understood my infatuation with "an ole farm animal," moved my family out to the country so I could wake up every morning, look out my bedroom window, and see my horses!

The way my Daddy treated my mom and us kids, the way he loved us, made the Heavenly Father seem more real, more attainable. I didn't doubt God loved me because my Daddy loved me.

Keep your memories, Amanda and keep putting treasures in your chest. As your dad and you have moved on from those more carefree times now you can develop memories of your Dad and your son.

I love the picture of your big strong daddy cutting down the tree limb that hurt you. It reminded me that our "Daddy" is always there when things hurt us, and He will take care of them. Sometimes He'll "saw them down" before they hurt us, and sometimes it is after, BUT...He won't leave us or forget about us and He will always protect us!

Amanda, you should meet my daughter she is one horse crazy gal too! I remember loving horses as a child but nothing like my daughter. In fact, if she isn't at a swimming pool she wants to be on a horse's back. She now works at a local barn where she earns 'riding time' on one of the barn owner's horses and she has also developed a real special relationship with one of the instructors there who is just like my daughter but all grown up! In fact, she has horse camp this morning! LOL Anyway, that was such a sweet, sweet story and memory and I was so touched by your admiration for your Father. Keith, us siestas wish you a very happy birthday!!! Thank you Amanda for sharing your heart with us. Love, Donna

Going to a movie that my mother and sister didn't want to see, reading the same books, watching the same PBS shows, and just listening to music. We would do all this and then sit and talk and compare. We'd try to see who could talk in the best British accent or use the biggest most random word, correctly, in our conversations. I have the best time with my dad! I love him with all my heart!

Happy Birthday, Keith ! I never really got a chance to get to know you while I was at HFBC, but from what I've heard, I do know that you take very good care of that sweet family of yours! And, if you couldn't already tell, your dear wife is very, very special to us!

And, Amanda dear, I know exactly where Waller is, as I used to teach at the middle school out there (behind Jack in the Box) for four sweet years. That was prior to June of 2004, when the Lord called me back to Wisconsin, as my Mom was quite ill. She is doing somewhat better now, but she still needs to use oxygen 24 hours a day, as she has pulmonary fibrosis.

Enjoy that darling little boy of yours ! And tell Curtis
"Hello". I heard him speak once or twice at HFBC before I left. And he is a mighty fine man of God, as he really made me think during those services. I'm sure that he makes a wonderful Youth Pastor at your new church.

Oh, I have a week off from the Bible Summer Camp that I have been working at this summer, which is going to be very nice, but I wanted to share that there have been 12 decisions made by children there to accept Christ Jesus for the first time in the first 3 weeks of camp. Praise God !!!

The "summer camp experience" may be a bit "wild and crazy" for this Craft Shop gal, but praise God, something is hitting home with many of these sweet kids there, when the staff can begin to see the kids realizing that Jesus really does LOVE them as individuals! That is so exciting to hear ! I only wish that I had realized that fact so soon in my lifetime, but I know now that our sweet Savior, Jesus, loved me way back in my childhood, too.

In Christ's Love,

Happy Birthday, Keith! Amanda, I always wanted a horse growing up. I remember a series of books I read about a girl and her horse. One of my best friends had a horse and I got to ride her a few times. My own dream never came to fruition, but I do remember special times with my dad, times when he would go swimming with us and throw us into the water like only a daddy can. Times when we would go sledding together on the golf course. Times when he would sit and listen to how his young daughter was feeling, and he wouldn't judge. Thanks for sharing your special memories with us and reminding me of my own.

How this makes me think of my daddy! The one who let me ruin one recliner after another because I insisited on squeezing in it beside him every night, and loosened the arms right off. The one who affectionately called me "The Boss." The daddy some of my friends wished was their daddy. The one who fixed my swingset. The one who let me sit in his lap when he was an usher at church. The one who drives around in the snow, looking to help someone who slid into a ditch, for free. The one who repairs cars for next to nothing. The one who, even at 79 years of age, cuts wood and gives it to those in need.

The older I get, the more I can see my Heavenly Father in my earthly father. All the things my dad does that makes him so beloved in the community are reflections of the presence of our God in him.

We can inherit many things from our fathers: high cholesterol, blue eyes, a love of coffee, and hard-headedness (all of which I got from MY dad) to name a few. I hope that I inherit enough of his good traits, and especially of my Savior's good traits, that my heritage will be easy for anyone to see...

Thanks for sharing Amanda. Although my dad has been gone for many years, I still remember walking my dog to meet him almost every nice afternoon, when he was on his way home from work. He would then drive us all home. Great time to talk to him alone. Although I'm sixty, I'm still horse crazy too. Hope your Dad had a great day!

Amanda,
Thanks for sharing such a great story. I have a 7 year old daughter named Juliana who also LOVES horses. I keep thinking it will pass but it only grows stronger. We live in a "neighbothood" in Florida and she just can't understand why we can't have a pet horse! Its fun now that horse clothing is in style. She always has room for one more shirt. I always say that my husband is father of the year everyday. What a blessing for little girls to have Daddy's who love them. You're a great writer. Hope your dad has a great birthday.

I bet that post if one of the best birthday presents your dad has ever received!! It definitely drives home the importance of time spent with our children. They certainly remember experiences over most material gifts they receive.

Oh! Amanda!! How awesome!!! I absolutely LOVE Taste of Texas and of course I love horses also. They're such beautiful creatures. Your Dad I know is so proud of you!! My mother recently passed away in Feb and my Dad is all I have left.. Reading your post got me teary eyed and excited about rebuilding our relationship again after some tumultous years. I hope to write a letter like that soon to me Dad.

Amanda,

OK! That's IT! I'm not reading your blog ANYMORE while I'm at work. Often, when I need a wee mental break, I'll turn on over to the LPM blog to see what's new and inspiring for the day.

But this is the I-don't-know-how-many-times now I have turned to this blog and either laughed my head off way too loud for this quiet office or just about cried right when the phone rang (I'm the receptionist!).

Seriously, thank you for such a touching retelling of your childhood memories and your love for your daddy. In truth, I fibbed... I'm sure I'll be back, even if I do have to bite my lip and pull it together to answer the phone. ;)

Amanda,

I loved your story, I wasn't so lucky and close to my Dad like you were I was abused and scared of my parents. It's not like it is now when I was growing up we didn't talk about being hit, verbally abused made to feel like no one gave a care. I just pray that the Lord can give me and my children a new chapter and end the generational abuse. I know that He can and I know it can be different .

Happy Birthday Brother Keith and thanks for being an awesome man of God and praying for other women who don't have a covering. Pray for me I don't have a covering!

Dear Sweet AJ,

What a beautiful (and teary) tribute to your Dad. Every little girl and big girl needs a Daddy that loves them like that. Those of us who didn't get that are finally blessed to know we have a Heavenly Father that can heal all the hurts of not having one on this Earth.

You are so blessed!
Happy Birthday to your Daddy!

That was wonderful. I reminded me of fishing trips I took with my dad when I was young. It was funny that my older brother didn't like to fish but his tom-boy sister loved. Daddy and I spent wonderful times on the lake just sitting waiting for the fish to bite. My husband says I had Daddy wrapped around my little finger. I'm sure it is the same with you and your dad.

Amanda-

Just in the other room from where I type this note to you is a little 10-year old girl who's told me more than once "I just love the smell of a barn". You have to understand, I'm a momma who never even dreamed of wanting a horse...and she can't dream of anything but her horses.
It's a girl and daddy thing for her as well...it's in her blood 'cause her daddy was the same way.
Thank you for these beautiful words.

I am sure God uses daddy just like yours to show small glipses of what a wonderful Daddy He really is. There are some of us that would love, long, for stories like you just shared, however, God chose to be our Daddy, since we don't have one to call our own. However, now I look at my husband and what a wonderful daddy he is to our beautiful girls and I can finally picture a smiling Daddy looking down at me. The thought makes me cry. Not because I don't have memories as a little girl of a daddy that loved me so, because this still little girl inside, has a Daddy that loves her beyond anything she could ever imagine. He continues to be my Daddy everyday and give me memories here on earth, but how I look forward to horseback rides with Him. Amanda and Melissa, you are both so blessed (and I know you know this) to have parents that love you so. There are us out here that long for just one parent here on earth to love us, but they don't. So God in His abundate love, gives us more than we could ever ask for in earthly parents (as tears come down). Yes you're both blessed, but so am I because the Daddy we all share, well His love leaves me speechless.

Melissa

Amanda,
very sweet to have those very special memories of your Dad and the strong foundation you have with him. It made me think of my Dad (past away in '81) when the whole family would go to Galveston. Out in the water my Dad, my sister and I would swim and he would stand in the deep waters where I and my sister could not touch the bottom, then he would let us dive off of his shoulders or he would lift us up from our feet and throw us like a dive into the water. I would swim around him and hold on to him and it was so neat! A tower above me in the water. I can still see those memories. Allison

Oh, that was so sweet! Thanks for letting us in on that. I love horses too. My dad wasn't very nice around the horses though. He's a professional horse trainer and he's so serious about it that he forgets that the people around him have value while he's working with the horses.

Amanda, that's a beautiful memory of your dad. Thanks for sharing it with us. I have so many fond memories of times spent with my daddy. He went Home to be with the Lord just before my 21st birthday in 1988. I was at his bedside along with my mother and one of my two brothers as left this world for Heaven. I am so thankful to God for giving me such a wonderful earthly father and as I look back on my relationship with him, there are no real regrets. When he died, he knew how much I loved him and I know how much he loved me. I was a definite "Daddy's girl." I still sing "Happy Birthday" to him every year.

My goodness, I so relate with this. Madly in love with horses (had a collection of statues and many, many books on horses), praying and begging for a horse at every birthday, finally getting my uncle's horse for a year and getting bit, stepped on, and thrown off by him (the horse, not my uncle). Meeting my future husband at 15 and packing away my horse statues. Memories...memories.... Thank you, Amanda, for reminding me.

Okay, where is the hankies? Oh, my word, I have a great imagination and I had the whole movie in my head of the story you just told, complete with soundtrack. If you ever decide to stop writing for your mom (God forbid!) then you could write screenplays! Movie Title: My Daddy My Hero; subtitle: (God sure looks good in jeans and boots!) We have three girls, and I still am Believing God for my husband to treat his girls (all of us) with that kind of precious care. Isn't He good to give you such a great Daddy? Thanks for the story, and Happy Birthday Keith! Amanda, I'm sure you just topped the rest of the family with your gift! I bet your tough Daddy cried when he read that!

Dear Amanda, I sent this comment through before but was not sure it went do to my total lack of blog savey. This comment is for your mother "Beth". I was totally overwhelmed today with graditude for all the minutes, hours, days, and years she has allowed God to pour through her for me. It took that long for Him to crack my granite exteior to get in and throw the mess out of my temple. There is nothing like the sand at the bottom of the Red Sea, nothing, I am forever changed. Thank you for taking all the firey darts on your shield Beth, for us and by us. I so want to be a fly on the wall when you present that shield at the feet of Jesus, and He says well done faithful servant.
Thank you Jesus that you always pick up the phone "without checking the caller ID and saying this ones to needy."(Jer.33:3) Love you all

I think I need a break from this blog. I've become obsessive to read new posts from the Moore's. I must check this blog at least five times a day to see if anything new has been posted and actually feel disappointed when the Moore's are silent. I hunger for more posts and a little voice is telling me that I should be hungering for is a Word from the Lord instead of a word from the Moore's. Today when I feel compelled to visit the blog I will seek the Lord instead. I know Beth will want it that way. Let me love you more Lord.

Happy Birthday Keith! I'm just a few weeks older than you. 1956 was a good year! Thanks Amanda for sharing this wonderful tribute to your Dad. As a young girl I begged my Dad to take me with him to a Nascar race. Yes, I'm from NC and it was in the day of Richard Petty! He finally gave in and we loaded up the sweet tea and fried chicken and headed to the Charlotte Motor Speedway. I was very excited. But the special moment came in the car before going into the track area. My Dad in his mild manner explained that I might see some things going on around us that was not seen in our home and he wanted me to be prepared but to enjoy the day. I understood about his desire to protect me. It made a strong impact on me. We had a great time at the race. I can't remember who won but I remember a special time with my Dad.

Amanda,

How wonderful to read your tribute to your dad and on his birthday, too! God blessed me beyond measure by allowing me to have 43 years with my dad. He went to be with Jesus almost 4 years ago, and I miss him terribly. We had a very precious relationship that I treasure. I agree with Leah - tell your dad every chance you get how much you love him and how much he means to you. I am very thankful I always did that, especially since my dad passed unexpectedly. May God bless you to have your dad for many years to come!

P.S. Happy birthday,Keith! You must be very proud of Amanda (and Melissa AND Beth, too, of course!)
