A Couple of Hard Cases
Greetings Blogworld... from the great and beautiful city of Atlanta.
I just had the most surreal moment. I was standing in a coffee shop a few minutes ago (no big surprise) when I heard the song “Somewhere in the Vicinity of the Heart” by Shenandoah and Alison Krauss. Have you heard it? I kid you not, I was teleported back to my 8th grade dance. I had forgotten how awkward yet glorious that historical moment was. Awkward because I was still sporting my braces but glorious because a person’s first big school dance is a rite of passage. Good or bad, it remains a milestone. I mean, I spent a month in a tanning salon preparing for that dance! I still remember exactly what formal dress I was wearing and even what my corsage smelled like. My date and I were attempting to two-step to this very passionate country tune. We were very much wrapped up into the song, so much so that I think I may have even put my head on his shoulder. Who doesn’t get caught up in the moment under a disco ball? You laugh…but this was a big move for an innocent thirteen-year-old girl with very well known parents. In between our very emotional embraces I would glance to make sure my homeroom teacher wasn’t looking because I knew darn well she was going to tell my Mom. Total downside of having your homeroom teacher doing your mother’s Bible studies. Okay, I digress, but today as I listened to the lyrics now from the perspective of an adult, I about died. Please take a minute to read the first two verses of this song:
Thousand miles
Of lonesome highway
Drinking gallons of coffee in a little cafe
Brought me here, and it's so good to find there's someone who's got
The same story as mine
Just look at us, we're a couple hard cases
So how'd we end up where we are?
Somewhere in the vicinity of the heart
I feel somethin hittin me awful hard
I don't know where it's gonna lead
I just know it starts
Somewhere in the vicinity of the heart
When I heard these lyrics again today I nearly went into hysterics. To think that a couple of suburban kids who had never so much as kissed were honestly identifying with these lines is completely absurd. But there we were. We were identifying, alright. Just a couple of hard cases looking for someone else with a similar tumultuous relational past.
Okay, so it's your turn- I want to know what takes you back to the past? What was your best or funniest memory at a middle school or high school dance? To what songs did you dance?

Whenever i hear the song, Everything I do, I do it for you, by Bryan Adams, I am transported back to 7th grade. There was a boy that I liked and we were "going" together, although we never went anywhere together, but that was "our" song.
I had this beautiful red dress and a do-do of a younger boy who took me to winter formal. "Lady in Red" started playing, an appropriate song to dance with him...and in the middle of the song, some boy asked him a question and he walked away...I was crushed! And he didn't even know why I was upset. That's why I married someone older :)
I remember my mom buying me a frilly dress and putting makeup on me. I spent the whole dance feeling so -- NOT me -- that I didn't dance at all! I hope I remember that when my daughter is getting ready for her first dance (when she's 25). :) Thanks for the thoughts!
I just want to say that I smiled so big when you said your homeroom teacher was taking your mom's bible study...love it...
A Journey tune will instantly transport me back to the high school gym where we twirled our ribbons in the most glorious ribbon dance. And to think that the figure 8 move of the arm actually qualified as a PE unit just cracks me up!
Do you understand, my sweet girl, how this is going to date all of us old women?!?! :)
I'm kidding, of course, but I couldn't help but participate because I totally get it!!!
Okay - you asked so here goes...
"Hello
Is it me You're looking for?
Cos I wonder where you are
And I wonder what you do
Are you somewhere feeling lonely
Is someone loving you?
Tell me how to win your heart
For I haven't got a clue
But let me start by saying
I love you."
I can distinctly remember hearing this song, standing on the sidelines of a dance, hoping that Scott So-in-so would ask me to dance. Because this was, even if he didn't know, "our song!"
Oh good grief, knowing now what I wish I had known then and I would have wasted my time on something else! :)
So funny to think of these things.
And for the record, I still can't hear James Ingram's song "If Ever You're In My Arms Again" without tearing up because my first broken heart came as this song was playing on the radio, sitting in a car, pouring down rain...I. KID. YOU. NOT!
Makes me laugh (or cry) even now! :)
Blessings,
Dori
I did not go to any formal dances (this post would be good for your mom's confidence or lack there of post.)
I will say that anything Paula Abdul or Madonna would fit into my school years.
Oh and the HYSTERIA of helping my friends get ready to go to the dance. Dreaming of what would happen...in 7th grade, what a bunch of wierdo's!
Had to laugh, because my song would have to be the Cha Cha Slide. Ohmigosh how we all thought we where so cool because we could follow the ridiculously simple directions of Mr. C, "Sllllide to the left! Slllllide to the right! Criss cross!! Cha cha now ya'll." And at this, everyone would do something different while trying to figure out what "cha chaing" really meant...
LOL!
Mmm.. well in my junior year in high school, I met a boy at church camp. He lived in Katy. And over the next three months, we dated. Our song was "The Longest Time" by Billy Joel. In May I was invited to his prom. I truly felt like a princess with a beautiful dress, beautiful hair and a limo! The pictures still show this young lady that I was becoming finally feeling what she always knew was her part--the princess. Unfortunately, she had fallen for the wrong prince first in my life. After much heartache and heart break, I realized I had cast the wrong one as my ultimate Prince. When I finally got that part right, God brought me my Chris, my prince. His timing and His way is good. Thank you, Jesus!
I totally remember that song! I really liked it! Haven't heard it in ages! I can't remember the song, but I remember my 8th grade dance. I had big hair, a big fluffy dress, and big...me. I am 5'11" now, and I have always been tall, always taller than all the boys in my class. So here I was, dancing in the gym with Preston, and I thought I would just put my head on his shoulder, but in order to do that I had to bend down! And I'm sure that my big ol' hair was probably right in his face, too! *embarassment and shudders!* Oh, the memories you have just brought to the surface! lol And the laughter! And while my mom wasn't teaching a Bible study, we live in a very small town, and all the teachers talk to parents on a daily basis...just in passing! Be it at church, the grocery store, the post office...wherever. And I knew that my "moment" would be told, too if anyone caught a glimpse!
Thanks for the trip down memory lane!
Hey Buddy. I remember one dance in early high school. There was this guy that I wanted to ask me...needed to ask me even. But then this really awkward guy from church stepped in and asked me. He didn't even go to my school! And he asked me to my school's dance! I didn't know how to say no. So, I went with him, and he wanted to swing dance to every song! We're talking Nsync, Backstreet, LFO, whatever, we were swing dancing. I will never forget the look on my best friend's face. She had that look that said, "Oh my gosh, I am so sorry...but we are going to have a lot to laugh about later!!"
Isn't it amazing...the power of a song or smell??? Two things are very prominent in my memory of middle school/high school...Love's Baby Soft perfume and Rave hairspray! I'm right back in the high school girls bathroom every time.
My favorite dance memory was my Senior Fall Homecoming. I distinctly remember wearing a brand new blue sweater, off white corduroy pants and brand new light tan boots. We danced to Jackson Browne's "Stay...Just a Little Bit Longer..." Once in a great while, I hear that song and it never fails to take me right back in our high school cafeteria, feeling that awkward yet glorious moment with my high school sweetheart all over again...(heartsmile)
Prince, When doves cry, nuff said.
Oh boy, here we go down memory lane! I love it!
Song memories: Any soupy, drippy, song by Journey.
High School dance memory: My first and only boyfriend in high school happened to D.J. our high school dance my junior year. I remember watching him with all the first love jitters I had as he played the records for us. We never danced together since he was working, but we had a great time.
The Careless Whisper - by Wham - dancing with Daniel G. and happy because he asked me to " go around" which meant I was his girlfriend.
Memories....
Geri K
Open Arms by Journey takes me back every time. My fondest memory is of my sweet friend standing at a whopping 5'2" dancing on a box so she could wrap her arms around her 6"5" boyfriend.
Maybe the very non-godly side of me was secretly hoping she'd fall off as punishment for stealing a tall guy from those of us who legitimately needed one. Gotta love being 5'11" in 9th grade just praying the boys would catch up some day!!
BOYZ II MEN baby! I can so remember slowdancing to Boyz II Men songs in middle school (some which aren't very appropriate might i add)!....anyways this post made me laugh! i didn't realize there were others out there with fond memories and a healthy appreciation for the good ole middle school dance!
The song :Turn around Look at me...takes me back to the 7th grade, lunchtime sock hops, being taller than my partner and being the first one brave enough to wear a maxi dress - still so innocent and optimistic about this whole girl boy thing!
Oh girl, I'm totally with you on Boys II Men!
Our senior class song was the Garth Brooks song "The River". It was played at senior assembly and was the last song played at prom. To this day, if I hear that song, a collage of high school memories runs through my head like a home movie. I can still smell the school and feel those insecure, messed up, I thought oh-so-mature feelings. It's like, for a brief moment I am 16 again. I admit, it's nice to visit sometimes but you couldn't pay me to live there again. :)
I am a houseparent to four teenage girls, none of which were born in the 1980's. Every single one of them though have a love of singing all of the 80's songs to me. Of course they choose the ones that bring back not so stellar memories. But it is fun anyway! They were dancing to them the other night and I thought I was going to wet myself I was laughing so hard. Their rendition of Ice Ice Babyis one to die over!
For me it was a song by Christopher Cross and a boy named Greg (wonder where he is today...) The songe was the theme to the movie Arthur -
Once in your life you find her
Someone that turns your heart around
And next thing you know you're closing down the town
Wake up and it's still with you
Even though you left her way across town
Wondering to yourself, "Hey, what've I found?"
When you get caught between the Moon and New York City
I know it's crazy, but it's true
If you get caught between the Moon and New York City
The best that you can do ......
The best that you can do is fall in love
This cracks me up just to think about it :-)
Ok, Melissa, this is going to let you know HOW OLD I am...but, I can remember crying, actually sobbing to a song by Chicago that I played over and over and over again and here are some of the lyrics:
I've been searching
So long
To find and answer
Now I know my life has meaning
Woah woah
Yes, that would be woah, woah..and I was sobbing because I was 14 and the "love of my life" had broken up with me and I knew my life would never have meaning again.
Can I just tell you that the poor guy went on to a very, very bad life and THANK GOD he broke up with me.
But I can still remember sobbing until it hurt to the haunting music and the lyrics...thanks for the smile!
Blessing,
Teri
Stairway to Heaven Led Zepplin
Color My World Chicago
It was back in the 80's.....we held hands in a circle a sang "We are the World". Classic.

All right, I don't want anyone to laugh but I danced to such songs as "Sittin on the Dock of the Bay" by Otis Redding, "The Twist" by Chubby Checker, any Elvis song that sent me swooning. That, my dear sweet girls was a looonnng time ago! I would try to tell my daddy I was "going with" so and so and he would immediately answer back with "Where ya goin', crazy!" I could not date until I was 16 and even then he had to come to the door and meet my parents. I was such a good little Baptist girl. I think we might need a few more parents like mine today.
Erin Vestibule, Why have I never heard that story?
Teri, I loved that you admitted that you actually cried. I think I did as well, but I didn't want to go public with that one.
middle school it would be "muskrat love" enough said!!
Hearing a Bruce Springsteen, John Cougar Mellencamp or Bon Jovi song always does it for me. Especially the "Summer of '69" song. It was the first song we heard at our first high school dance and I won't forget it. Yes, the 80s were a great decade. I can nearly see the fog from the smoke machine just thinking about them. And my five inches of bangs sprayed into exact position... they were way cool. And break dancing was THE thing to do at dances.
I gotta tell you though, reading some of the lyrics to those songs as an adult, I'm totally embarrassed I sang some of them.
i will never forget one particular dance. everyone was SLOW-dancing to "Stairway to Heaven". My dance partner, however, wanted to dance it FAST. Being the influential, agreeable girl I used to be, I went with it. All arms and legs flailing, he really worked it. I felt like a big dork for the entire 20-minute, extended play version.
I shouldn't say a word on this one. I went to a Christian School that was so conservative even dancing before the Lord was considered risque! Chapel songs occasionally involved "creative movements" with the hands, but certainly none of what Chonda Pierce calls "foot fellowship."
I got the shock of my life my junior year when we put on a school play and the scene I was in (an extra, of course) involved a minuet (shocked that no one thought we were sinning). I had never danced in my life, and couldn't remember what I was supposed to do with my feet from one minute to the next. My unfortunate partner had to keep muttering instructions, "In . . .out . . .in . . .turn."
I haven't tried to dance since!
Anne
I am stuck between the "Livin on a Prayer" By Bon Jovi,(I think he was my first love big hair and all, you had to love a man who had hair bigger than yours in the late 80"s early 90's) and the Garth Brooks unanswered prayers. Both of those bring back those memories of homecoming dances where in my small town we wore boots and Jeans, and I thought I would marry my eigth grade boyfriend and live happily ever after. Thank God For Unanswered Prayers.
"When I See You Smile"- every time I hear it I think of Spring Dance, my 8th grade year, which sadly is 20 years ago now (wow), dancing with Chad D trying so hard to be cool, and not look like a dork. I think we broke up the next week. Serious stuff, man. lol
I'm so glad that part of my life is over, but I have never been able to get over those great 80s hits. Turn it up!
One memory that is forever burned in my brain...My mother's friend picking us up from a high school dance. She came in to the dance (instead of just waiting outside) and she was wearing slippers and I think she had sweats on! Oh the horror!
Air Supply--anything by Air Supply. We didn't have much money and this was one of the very few Albums I had.
Oh and how could I forget Nicki! Oh Nicki you so fine you so fine Oh Nicki!
My husband would just die if he read this!
Ok. Here's where I get to tell everyone what a total dork I was. My parents refused to let me listen to anything secular. I was the only kid in Jr High without a boombox blaring in my bedroom constantly - I mean it's physically impossible to BLARE Steve Green and Larnell Harris. However, I did have "rebel" friends who (GASP!) listened to the radio. One of them had an older brother who was our chauffeur most of the time and was a HUGE Steve Miller Band fan. So the first secular song I ever remember learning the lyrics to was "The Joker." Even though I still don't know what a "Midnight Toker" is, I still love the song.
I also had a "rebel" friend who taught me about Guns-n-Roses. Whoa, my parents about DIED when they heard about that one!
Now I'm a mom of 3, and while I fully love Praise and Worship music (and listen to it most of the time), I have become a fan of all sorts of music - and my kids are, too.
I am also a Pastor's Kid (PK). I understand what it's like to live under a microscope. Although my microscope was a little smaller than yours. I never had a teacher who was doing one of my dad's Bible Studies (because he never wrote any) but I did have teachers who were members of my dad's church. It's a lot of pressure!
Most definitely has to be high school junior prom when NSYNC came on and my girlfriends and I hit the floor and did the entire dance to "Bye Bye Bye". Oh, we thought we were SO cool!!!
I will forever treasure Teri/HIS Daughter, typing out, whoa whoa. I love Chicago - too cute!
Melissa, I not only cried and cried, but after listening to the song..for the 50th time I would then read the Bible - the Psalm where David is inspired to say he is groaning upon his bed all night KJV in 1974.
Not only crying...but praying the Psalms because I know it was written for a broken hearted 14 year old "in love" with a bad boy from the wrong side of the tracks...woah woah!
Love ya girl,
Teri
I just walked into my boss' office and what was on the radio - Unanswered prayers by Garth Brooks; I will forever remember that one Siesta who said this was on of her songs.
hilarious! thanks for sharing. Ok, my turn: 8th grade, 'graduation' around the corner. We had a dance and my "boyfriend" and I dance to "A whole new World." oh, yes. And then anytime I hear anything by guns and roses, which isn't often these day, but I just die. Also, when I smell Brut - LOL!! yeah, those young boys didn't need it but oh, they knew the girls liked it.
Hahaha..
Kristen, Bye Bye Bye was a big one at my Prom as well!
There is nothing like a song from the past to transport me back in time...
The song that reminds me the most of high school prom is Kenny Chesney's "You Had Me From Hello." My prom date played the song in the car on the way to prom, and then he requested the DJ to play it at prom. The fun part is that I get to keep that memory for a long time because we're getting married in May! (We've been dating for 7 years, so needless to say, it's been a long time coming.)
One funny song that takes me back to a time of puppy love and heart break is Nikki French's Total Eclipse of the Heart. Haha... In fourth or fifth grade I had a huge crush on this boy. (Now, it's hard for me to imagine why.) But, anyway, I found out that he had asked another girl out, and it nearly crushed me. So, I played that song on repeat.
Oh the memories...
Oh, I love this post! Melissa, I go back to junior high when I hear "Angel" by Aerosmith. I can vividly remember dancing to it at my first dance (or at least one after that). I also have a wonderful memory of one of the popular guys. I was NOT POPULAR at all! But at my first dance, an 8th grader that was VERY POPULAR asked me to dance on the final dance. It was a huge deal! All of the girls at the dance were so jealous. Thanks for helping me remember that!
Reunited...
Need I say more!
Just about any upbeat song from the late eighties brings back memories. I was on my highschool's dance squad and we would make up routines to the most popular songs at that time. Wow...that's been almost over 20 years ago!!! The funny thing is, I can still remember some of the dance routines! Which is ironic because I can walk from one room to another and can't remember "why" I went in there. Ha Ha
OH! PS: I went to a Methodist church, where our church camps always, always had dances on the last night. This makes my Chris tease me a lot, for his conservative Baptist heritage brought no such wildness, as a church dance. Of course, then there were "foot functions" at Baylor.
Cracks.me.up!
Mine is somewhat of a horror story to a 14 year old 8th grader. My mom told me that our school newsletter said the dance was a "costume" dance. I'm not sure how I managed to listen to her and not double check with a friend. To the absolute horror of this 8th grade girl, I showed up to the dance in a giant size Cabbage Patch Kid doll costume.... and NO ONE ELSE was wearing a costume. Either it was supposed to be a costume dance and everyone decided they were too cool, or my mom was looking at the wrong newsletter. Not only is it uncool to be the only one wearing a costume... but it is absolutely horrifying to be the only life-size baby doll in your 8th grade class!
Of course, I am from the era of College/grunge music.
I ask you, how does one "dance" to Nirvana?
I love you, Lord
and I lift my voice
to worship you.
Oh my soul, Rejoice!
Take joy, my King
in what you hear.
May it be a sweet, sweet sound
in your ear.
Whenever I hear that song I immediately am taken back to church camp and the night I accepted Christ as my savior. That was my very first worship song I ever learned.
My first big formal was senior prom...I was a dateless wonder in high school. And college too for that matter, but I digress. I did however have a "boyfriend" in jr. high. I say "boyfriend" because all we did was hold hands, watch movies and steal a few kisses. It wasn't anything earth-shattering. But our song, the one we had our first dance to, the one I hear and get transported as you were this morning - "Every Breath You Take" by the Police. What can I say...it was 1984. Nothing like the musings of a parnoid stalker to say "I think you're totally rad" to a couple of 13 year olds. Oy!
The only dances I was allowed to go to were my junior and senior prom. I was raised Pentecostal so dances were a big no no. Prom was a huge deal for my father . Being the oldest, my sisters got to go to a few more after my parents lightened up a bit. My son is currently having to learn some social dances in P.E. He is in the 5th grade and truly believes this is worse than waterboarding. Now, if it were ballroom...that might be different. Dancing With the Stars has made that cool. Ballroom rocks. With your husband, of course...
i agree with siestaoc. i was never asked to a dance either. i was always the great friend that helped everyone else get ready. still that way, now i'm helping them get ready for their wedding day. oh well. someday my Prince will come :)
I never went to a dance. I had two brothers and had no need for a boyfriend. When I was going in to 7th grade my family went to Hawaii on vacation and some kid whose dad worked for my dad, came over and gave me his leigh. I about died. He kissed me and everyone, I kid you not, everyone in the restaurant went "OH". I wanted to crawl under the table right there. My mom had nothing to worry about with me. Two brothers were enough for me!
Jan
totally off the subject- could we get Angela Cottrell's whole-wheat pancake recipe?
Rosie
(a mother trying to find healthy breakfast options for her 3 boys)
Oh what fun reading these memories! Mine are anything by 3 Dog Night, Steve Miller Band, Chicago, The Beatles and it takes me right back to the Hurricane Hut at our school.
Sandy in Montana
"Stairway to Heaven" by Led Zeppelin was the theme of our Senior Prom, 1980!! Okay, who picks that song? I mean, the only dance I ever went to, and I was a senior and you can't even really dance to that crazy song. Guess it seemed 'romantic' to the prom committee. But when they played Barry Manilow, "Can't Smile Without You", we danced and sang at the top of our lungs, poofy permed hair and white cotton gauze dress with a peasant blouse type neckline!! Go girl!
George Strait's
The Chair-----Could there be any more of a cheesy come on line than that?
Don Henley's "Boys of Summer" takes me back! I was pining for a boy who I'm sure didn't know I was alive. I was hoping he'd hear that song and think of me. But it's also not like I had a lot of boys of summer to be vying for my attention. Lordy. I was a wreck - lol.
This is really going to date me but there was a song by Iron Butterfly, InaGaddaDaVida which was played at all the dances.
InaGaddaDaVida honey, don't you know that I love you....
Well, there was a 17 minute drum solo in the song. We never knew if we should keep on trying to dance or sit down. I mean 17 minutes of trying to look cool to a drum solo is too much.
Oh it's so Bryan Adams for me. First dance 7th grade, homeboy stepped on my feet soooooo many times, but i was in heaven
I remember everyone dancing to MC Hammer's "Too Legit To Quit" and "Can't Touch This." I can still see a boy named Brain in his puffy MC Hammer pants doing the motions to the lyrics "Too legit.. too legit to quit..hey hey." You made the number two sign with your fingers, then the letter L with your fingers to go along with the words. So funny!
For some reason, after reading this post, I am totally picturing Napoleon Dynamite at his school dance saying to Deb, "I like your sleeves. They're real big."
polo cologne instantly takes me back! Music wise, we danced to journey and chicago! I should say roller-skated with our combs in our pockets to fluff our Farrah hair...oops I've really dated myself haven't I? Oh well.
oh goodness melissa, that would be kc and jo jo, "all my life" in a purple and gray velour (count it) dress with a matching crop jacket at my 7th grades dance. . .no horrible date though, just a gals night at a valentine's dance. . .
Boyz II Men, fo sho, but it's already been mentioned.
Here's one, though: I Will Always Love You by Whitney Houston
How many of us declared our undying affections to THAT song, huh? ;)
I grew up listening to Captain and Tenile (sp?) - and I still find myself singing their songs out loud anytime they come on the radio.
Peace,
Kim
Apex, NC
takes me back to the past?
old red brick roads...I think of my grandmother's place in Ohio. (I know this is not music or a dance but seeing those brick roads here and there in downtown Houston just transports me)
"Bridge Over Trouble Water" skate dancing with Benny at a skating ring here in Houston. That song takes me back to grade school even before I knew Benny. Lot of feeling there.
Oh, high school dances....the memories. Not that it is ever on anymore, but every once in awhile "Tootsie Roll" comes on and even though it is the most ridiculous song ever I always think of dances, b/c they always played it. Also, "I Swear" was a huge hit. I danced with "the one I was going to marry and have babies with" to that song...instantly go back to that every time I hear it. Totally didn't marry him, and definetly didn't have his babies, but oh the memories of first love.
For some reason, although I went to several, I have no strong memories of any school dances...
Odd...
But reading the comments made me remember something silly! One of my very best friends, Laura Lee, started "going" with a boy a couple of years older, and he gave her this huge, ginormous class ring to wear, and of course it was too big for her finger, so she wrapped orange yarn on it to make it small enough for her to wear. It looked like she was wearing brass knuckles! Well, their relationship was, shall we say, tumultous, and every week they would break up, and I'd help her take all the yarn off the darn ring, she'd give it back to him, or more likely, hurl it at him, and then a few days later they would be back in love, and back on went all that silly yarn. I'm laughing just thinking about it!
Mine has to be my senior prom and the song, "Lady in Red". I wore a red formal and my date/boyfriend had on a black tux with red bow tie and cummerbund....who knew this song was going to be played??? My corsage was red roses and his boutonniere was a red rose. We were oh so matchy. From that night on (until we broke up) I was his "Lady in Red". Too funny.
O.K., so the year is 1990. The event: my junior prom. The bangs: large. Very large.
Earlier that day I was babysitting for some friends. As I was opening their pantry to feed their kids lunch, the entire shelf fell out and landed on my foot and broke my toe. My poor date! There was to be no dancing that evening as I sat on the sidelines watching blood seep through my teal-dyed satin pump. TOO FUNNY! Later that evening, some close friends and I all ditched our dates (who were just friends and not significant others) and rode around in the limo that another parent had rented. Good times... :)
Well, b/c I'm way older than you so if I shared a song that took me back you might say, "huh?" Anyway, your sharing brought to mind my own Starbucks/Alison Krauss moment. One day I was at Starbucks having my quiet time and struggling with some serious medical news I had just received regarding my husband when out of the speakers came the words,
"I'd rather be in the palm of Your hand
Though rich or poor I may be
Faith can see right throught the circumstance
Sees the forest in spite of the trees
Your Grace provides for me.
But if I trust the One who died for me
Who shed His blood to set me free
If I live my life to trust in You
Your grace will see me through."
I'm telling you God was singing to me through Alison Krauss at my local Starbucks...right what I needed to hear at just the right moment. It was one of those moments that grew my faith and allowed me to see that He is so sovereign...even at Starbucks :)
Bon Jovi, Never Say Goodbye.
Can you believe they're still around and I still love them.
I think everyone wanted to use that song for the end of the year dance.
"I can't fight this feeling any longer" REO Speedwagon!!! 7th grade so ridiculous! I actually dedicated the song the guy i liked on our local radio station. He didn't respond...until 9th grade!
I love this.
Any song by a boy band takes me back to that gym, girl.
Too funny. I recently found my old CD case from high school - and I couldn't believe the music that was in there....hilarious.
Thanks for sharing :)
Blessings,
Kate :)
We were not allowed to dance. Paul Anka's "Put Your Head On My Shoulder", reminds me of th early 60's and summers at the beach. The snack shack played iton the radio every time we were at the beach. Those were good days.
Judy
My worst dance memory EVER: It was the Sadie Hawkins dance, 1976. Girls ask the guys and I don't remember who I had a crush on, but whatever, I wasn't brave enough anyway. A girlfriend of mine suggested I take her very cool older brother...he was already out of high school AND he was a DJ at a local radio station. Sounds good, right? NO IT WAS NOT. After I committed to ask him (sight unseen) I found out that my dad's band was hired to play at the Sadie Hawkins dance...my dad played in a country-western band on weekends and in 1976, country music wasn't cool in my California town. And having your dad at the school dance. Not cool. And a blind date with a creepy older guy. Not cool. I cannot remember one song from that dance!
I can't believe I'm about to admit this to the general population, but to my first school dance (5th grade -- they started us early!), I wore a fuchsia dress WITH PUFF SLEEVES.
If that isn't bad enough of it's own, I also wore dyed-to-match fuchsia pumps.
And to think my date didn't snap me up that very night while the gettin' was good... SHOCKER, I KNOW!
OH my. In jan in nc's message, I discovered I need to slow WAY down with my reading, because I read "inflatable" where she wrote "influential"!! It has been a looooong day.
"The Pina Colada Song" I believe was played at our 7th grade dance, when a friend of mine told me this AWESOME guy had planned on asking me to the dance... and he DIDN'T. I was sorta teary there in the restroom, wondering why in the world he didn't. Never mind that my 7th grade brain didnt' consider the transportation issues, or such. He is still a great guy though.
This was about 30 years ago! Surely I am not that old.
I remember dancing to Chicago's "You're the Inspiration" when I was in middle school. I also remember that all of us girls wanted a boy to dance with us to "Almost Paradise"...those jr. high days were so memorable..especially my crazy 80s perm and braces!!
Candle in the Wind.....
I remember my first dance in the middle school cafeteria. I remember walking in to "Everybody Dance Now" blaring and feeling all pumped up because of it. Whenever I hear that song, I feel transported back.
I also remember spending most of the dance avoiding this boy who "liked" me and was going to ask me to dance. I was half afraid because I didn't know how to dance and half terrified because he "liked" me. Ah, the drama.
"Abracadabra" by The Steve Miller Band (I think). It was a "magical" last night of summer camp. Sigh . . .
She wants to dance with me! Rick Astley LOL
How about "slow dancin swaying to the music, slow dancing just me and my,my,my,my girl", or "your're once, twice, three times a lady, and I love you" with my big angel, lacy white sleeves and long, baby blue dress! (uggg) Kelly, from Michigan
"My Love" by Paul McCartney. It was brand new when I was at my first high school dance. We're talkin' 1973!!
I went to a boarding school when my parents were international missionaries. The school was awesome, but all of our music had to be approved, so all we were ever allowed to listen to was Sandi Patti or Michael W. Smith (come on, "Friends are Friends Forever...played at EVERY graduation), but don't think we didn't sneak off campus to our local international friend's home and form crushes on Bon Jovi. "I'll Be There for You" makes me all giddy to this day. Who wouldn't love Jon Bon Jovi and his permed hair! Oh, the memories!
Well I am a child of the late 70's early 80's so the "big" things I remember are big hair and big hoop skirts! I remember my date getting his hands stuck in my overly hairsprayed do when he tried to kiss me and nearly falling to my death when I tripped in my southern bell gown. Oh memories of the way we were-and hope to never be again. (ha,ha)
Much love!
Kristi B.
Anything by Journey takes me back, especially Open Arms. There were some nervous boys, shaking to pieces while they were slow dancing. I used to think it was funny. I guess you can say that I was just a little too confident and happy with my little self.
Sadly, I do not remember any songs from my middle school dance... All I remember is my dad walking in, grabbing my arm, and saying "get your sister."
We may have taken advantage of growing up in a 'broken home' and played the permissive parent against the legalistic parent - and we got burned!!!
We still laugh about it to this day. Talk about striking fear into a heart!
Oh my goodness so funny! We loved "Freebird" or "Stairway to Heaven" because they were the longest slow dances... and you thought it was sooo cool if the guy put his hand in you back pocket while you slow danced! That was love!
I was the scrawniest kid and when I was in 8th grade just before the dance my Mom talked me into getting a Dorothy Hamill haircut! The wedge! Oh I was pitiful... skinny, braces, freckles and a wedge haircut... what in the world! Like you aren't insecure enough in middle school! All my friends were so glamorous and there I was looking just like a boy! (makes me insecure to think about it! Ha!)
HI Melissa,
Being only a couple days new to this blog, I am totally enjoying reading all the comments from the other siestas and the stories that you, your mom and sister write about. They keep me grinning from ear to ear! Not to mention you all are just"hilhairious"!
Well, I wasn't allowed to go to any of my school dances but during the time of my senior prom my parents flew me to North Carolina where 2 of my brothers were attending bible college. There was a big banquet on campus that weekend and my brothers had gotten me a date with an "older college guy." I just knew this was IT! I was going to fall in love and live happily ever after! LOL!! Let's just say that brothers REALLY play it safe for their little sisters and the guy, although he seemed nice enough, was not my dream of a Prince Charming!
Thanks for stirring up fond memories and fun times.
Love to you all,
Dawn
Okay..so who knows "Push It" by Salt N Peppa?? What a horrible song for a young girl to be singing to the top of her lungs with her girlfriends...We were so innocent...I guess we thought they were talking about dancing and I did not pay attention to any other part of the song. We also sang "Baby got back" like there was no tomorrow in high school...another song to make me blush now just listening to the lyrics. The ironic part about that song was how obessed we were in high school about our looks, figure particularly our butts...and there we were jammin to a song embracing a large bottom! How dumb were we??? Too funny now!!! Oh the joys of growing up :)
Thank you Lord that my life now embraces songs that glorify you and not my behind :)
Dawn! I am so glad you've started commenting! This blogging community is hilarious for sure!
What a super-fun-post! I'm racking my brain for the best of the best. Basically Martina McBride's Evolution CD sums up my Senior year! As for a specific song, "I love you, always, forever, near and far, we'll stay together. Everyday I will be with you, everything I will do for you..." makes me think of a huge crush with "the most unbelievable blue eyes I've ever seen".
Fun times!
I had a silver metallic sequin dress that would change to a rainbow color when the bright lights would shine on it. Oh my word, that’s hilarious to remember!
Some of the dance songs were “Open Arms” by Journey “When You Love Someone” and “Please Forgive Me” by Bryan Adams. And the hair? You bet, big as Texas in all her Aqua Net glory!!
Love, Amy in OK (formerly a Texan)
I'm so mad! I did a funny comment but I think my computer ate it! I'm afraid my man is going to get annoyed if I stay on here another second so I won't take time to write it again. Just want you to know these are so funny!! I love this post! Great idea, Lis!
The Journey Continues ~
Both are TRUE stories!!!
#1 It was summer ASB/leadership camp for the high school students across California.
The dance was the last night.
I was asked to dance by a young man from another school who not only was the ASB President but Super Jock of his hs. It was a fast dance song " two tickets to paradise" and he "tried" to slide me between his legs
( 50 type be bop style) and as I was sliding back, my knee hit his private area and he fell to the floor and began to scream and grab that area. I was mortified and stood there infront of all the ASB presidents from across the state staring at me!
It was one of the most embarrassing moments of my life. until # 2.
#2. Prom Stairway to Heaven song. I went with the football star who was 6'2 and I am 5'1" He left me alone in the middle of the floor, walked to the edge of the gym and grabbed a chair and brought it back and asked me to stand on it.
Oh it was an awful ordeal
thanks for asking!
Oh, so funny! My husband and I were just laughing about this the other day. My song that takes me way back to high school (1997) is Journey "Open Arms". SO RIDICULOUS!! First of all it talks about being in bed with someone and that thought never crossed my mind until my honeymoon. Teenage/preteen drama is so funny.
Teenager in late 80s and early 90s-
Homecoming, School Dances, and Proms-Blessed to have had those times. Listening to songs on You Tube from that time period takes me back to music of that time -my friends and I talk about it-especially if one of us has had a bad day to play a song from that time period seems to cheer us up reminding us of a simpler time. NKOTB, The Jetts, and Debbie Gibson from the late 80s were some of our favorites. Also, big hair held up by Aqua Net was used by all in the girls restroom at these dances. Does that take anyone us back? Fun Post!
School dances were too uncomfortable to remember too often, but when I just pass by the local theatre, it all comes rushing back--the mixed smells of sawdust and fresh paint from sets, and musty costumes and heavily scented stage make-up, the echo of even the smallest whisper when the audience is empty and the lights are down, the safety and uninhibited expression in those rooms with such close friends. I spent most of my summers there with friends both older and younger than myself and those relationships and memories and old lines and jokes are still being added to.
Whenever I hear a song from Fleetwood Mac's "Rumors" album it takes me back to my first date with my husband, 30 years ago! We went to a high school sports banquet and then went out and bought the new Fleetwood Mac 8 track! Boy that will take you back!
Whenever I hear a song from Fleetwood Mac's Rumors album it takes me back to my first date with my husband, 30 years ago! After going to a high school sports banquet we went and bought the brand new Fleetwood Mac 8 track!!! Boy those were the days! Thanks for taking me back again.
Linda G, sorry for publishing your comment twice!
I would only slow dance. I always told everyone I couldn't dance so I never wanted to ever even try because I thought everyone would be watching.
I remember dancing to the song "Slow dancin', swayin' to the music. No one else in the whole wide world...."
I remember I had tanned too, but this was back in the days before tanning beds so I laid out and got really sunburned. I still have the picture of me & my date (which happens to be my hubby) in my long dress with my very sunburned neck showing where the swim suit straps were.
Ugh... "I'm All Outta Love" by Air Supply. Listened to it and sobbed til I thought I would PUKE after breaking up with THE love of my life (at like what... 12 years old?) Wow. Those years were TOUGH.
We had the same DJ at all of our high school dances, and he ended every dance with "Lady in Red." Every time it started, you would here the collective groan of all those who wanted the night to last forever and all the couples would hurry for their last chance to snuggle. But my favorite was "Bed of Roses" by Bon Jovi.
Oh my goodness. If I hear any music from the mid-seventies or the 80's I think of all the high school dances we went to. My best friend Denise and I loved listening to Hall and Oates and to this day when we hear that group or Rick James, or Kenny Rogers we think of each other.
These songs always remind her and I of all the things we used to do on the weekends. She had a step-father who would drive us to school etc.. but he drove like 20 mph..we would dunk down in the back seat until we got to where we were going. One time he was taking us to Nashville and he went on the wrong exit ramp and he reversed on the interstate. lol
Also, when we hear a Kenny Rogers song we think of the time we visited her father who lived in Nashville, we were going shopping with her step-brother and this car pulls up beside of us and asks us for directions...it was Kenny Rogers. lol
Thank you for this walk down memory lane. :)
When I look at pictures...it takes me back! I remember dancing to YMCA with a group of friends at my middle school dances. I was way too scared to dance with boys then!
I have loved reading these posts! And how many Siestas are children of the 70's and 80's! After all... wasn't everyone born at least in the 50's and 60's?
I didn't date much in High School... loved having all my friends. But my Junior year I dated a Senior Basketball player. I was 5 foot - he was 6'5". What comedy! When he broke up with me I would cry every time I heard the song Open Arms by Journey! I giggle about that now! But by my freshman year in college, I met a young man when I was home from BSU for the weekend. He was my first love... and anything by Lionel Richie from Dancing on the Ceiling reminds me of those days. So young, but thinking I knew so much. Oh and he used to sing Always and Forever to me!
Bryan Adams, REO Speedwagon, Journey, Foreigner, oh and who could forget Air Supply... sigh... those songs just broke my heart!
Fun post!
Songs and smells that is what takes me back! And we are all about Air Supply--I'm all out of love, I'm so lost without you...Chicago was good too and Journey. I remember the junior high dances--I was 5'9" in a world of boys that hadn't seemed to hit puberty yet, Dancing in the lighted gym, at 4 in the afternoon, with a boy who was 3 or 4 inches shorter than me, aah, that was great Ü!
"in the moment under a disco ball? You laugh" ...yes I did and at that very moment. You crack me up!
Okay. I'm so stinkin' old. One of the sweet YOUNG siestas mentioned, When I See You Smile ~ Ummm, yea. That was my favorite song when my oldest was a baby...it just fit all those maternal feelings.
Now as for my memory...besides my first stint of mommyhood...high school, EVERY high school dance ~ anything by Alabama~ the early days. You know, My Home's In Alabama, Old Flame, Love in the First Degree, etc. I two-stepped many a-mile to those guys. And here is something pretty funny. It was always with my friend...never the guys I dated. My friend taught me how to dance and we even won the dance contest at our high school dance our senior year. I'll never forget my date hyping up the crowd for us. That friend - became my first husband. Not a great marriage, but definitely a great story!
Ahh -- songs of the Bee Gees and they had about ..... forty eleven hundred (that's a whole big ol' bunch in southernese). How Deep is Your Love was a favorite to dance to and then there was also Tonight's the Night by Rod Stewart (really appropriate stuff).
I was in middle school at the height of the Disco era -- which is also known as the musical wasteland. But I still love some serious disco from time to time.
Oh, I forgot to mention...I did dance with my dates to fast songs and slow dances - Journey, Air Supply, etc... but never to the country songs!
This has been so fun to read!!! I'm loving this...if we all had coffee, we could just sip and giggle together over these funny stories!
Thanks, Melissa!!
Smell? Ahh Final Net hairspray -- the pump kind because we gave up aerosol to save the planet -- reminds me of the beach. We tanned all day and then showered, rolled our hair on hot rollers) and sprayed about half a bottle per hairdo before heading out to find boys.... wait, I mean spend quality time together.
Apparently I've given up on my concern for the planet 'cause I'm all about aerosol and spray tons of ths stuff on my head daily
My name is Beth. "Our song" was "Beth" by KISS. We would listen...and...um...kiss.
Any other Beths have similar memories? ; )
Chicago's "Color My World"....."As time goes on...I realize...just what you mean to me...and now...now that you're here...promise your love....
I remember having a "fight" with the eigth grade boy friend and calling him on the phone (my mother would die if she knew I actually called a boy at that age) I played him the New Kids on the block song I'll be lovin you (forever). I put the phone up to the speaker on my jam box. WOW that has been oh so many years ago and I still remember it like it was yesterday.
Melissa this has been a fun post to read :)
"When I see you smile, I can face the world oh, oh you know I can do anything..." by Bad English takes me back to 7th grade and my first boyfriend.
What is so funny about it is that it was not warm, mushy feelings that makes this song "his song" but the fact that my best friend always told me he looked like a turtle when he smiled. Sure enough he did look like a turtle when he smiled! Just picture two 7th grade girls falling into hysterics when this song came on the radio. It still tickles me 20+ years later.
oh wow too funny!! OK has to be boyz II men and Bryan Adams' Everything I do.....ok now im going to turn on some 90210 for nostalgia sake lol
"I DOn't want to Cry" by Mariah Carey. I played that song over and over wishing about a boy that I was crazy about. I must have played it one hundred times in one day. I was 14. We dated three different times and my best friend married his brother so I see him at least twice a year but I don't "want to cry" anymore :)
I had to come back and read some of the comments and I find out that there at least 2 of you who were "tall guy stealers" and ended up dancing on chairs.......so funny!!
The idea of scents that take us back......DRAKAR. They actually still sell the stuff, can't believe it!
we didn't have many dances and the ones we had were, i'm sure like everyone else, l.a.m.e. we all sat on the bleachers and watched the older kids dance, so afraid that one day that might have to be us.
i'm from a really small town, and my middle school was in the ghetto of that small town-and despite our thug surroundings, the only song that got everyone on the dance floor was "cotten-eyed joe". sad.
it was kind of like a movie though where everyone jumped off the bleachers and started the group dance. ah yes, the coreography. it's all coming back to me now...
"Total Eclispe of the Heart" by Bonnie Tyler.
Homecoming Dance, 10th grade.
First "real" date and first "real" kiss.
I remember thinking that the world was spinning wonderfully out of control.
I can't believe I just wrote that, but it is so embarrassingly true!
We never went out again.
I had a date to my first middle school dance, and we slow danced to "Unchained Melody" while the chaperones walked around making sure we were arm's length apart.
The Macarena was also a big craze that year, and anything by N Sync or the Backstreet Boys!
Oh my goodness. I'm so old. There were two songs that I loved and did nearly anything to get out on the dance floor to dance to: "If" by Bread and "Colour My World" by Chicago. I would negotiate with whomever was DJing the dance so that they got played as often as possible. Wow ... darkened gymnasium, boys against a wall glancing down so they wouldn't look like they wanted to dance, teachers separating kids on the dance floor. Jr. Hi. 1971-72. Wow. I'm old. But, what awesome memories!
Freetobeme,
I loved your comment! Spinning out of control, I love it!
With no hesitation, "Cowboy Take Me Away" by the Dixie Chicks, takes me all the way back to the 10th grade!!!
I am recalling Grand Funk Railroad and their song, "Locomotion" when we all did group dances when we did NOT want to dance with our date solo!! Those were some of the most fun times of my life, thanks for this post.
Oh my goodness...all you 80's girls, how about this song...
BAAAAAABAAAAAAYYYYYYYY Ohhhh I get chills when I'm with you oooo oooo.
(When I'm With You-Sheriff)
HA! I danced with Steve to this song in 8th grade and thought I was going to marry him.
But the funniest thing was in High School. I was in show choir and we did a ton of dancing with our songs. Our choir director was an older lady and really didn't care what we did. So there was this kid who could dance just like Patrick Swayze in dirty dancing, but the guy could not sing a lick. So he asked if he could do a dance at the choir concert to Time of My Life and asked me to do the dance with him. I was a little confused when he asked me because I thought we would be singing the song. NOPE. So there I was, dancing the song (sans the "dirty dancing" parts) complete with the jump off the stage. He jumped, I did not. I looked like a fool standing there watching him dance all along the front of the stage.
Right that moment, my boyfriend came up and said "Nobody puts Baby in a corner." and I left carrying a watermelon.
Ok, that last part didn't happen, but I couldn't resist. :)
Good times.
Our 8th grade year was all about
"That's what friends are for..." and Whitney singing - "The Greatest Love of All."
Now I know the personally the Greatest Lover of all - and He is AWESOME!
I had my 20? year reunion this past June. My good friend and event planner put together an entire "Amazing Race" for the 35 of us who came home. We visited the old movie theatre, the gym, the football field, barrel-racing at the arena, a trip to the museum to look through old annuals (you know you're from a small town in Montana when a 20 year old annual is in the museum!)...she even convinced several of our teachers who are still in the profession to show up on a Saturday in June to administer quizzes and make us sing the school song. She included clues to the local "party" spots in the country (which put us considerably behind as we got lost and had no clue where we were going!!) We finished at the cemetery where we put flowers on the graves of our classmates who have passed away. It was crazy! So much fun and a great way to get reacquainted with everyone. It also really brought all KINDS of memories back to us, and not just the ones that took place inside the 4 walls of the school! Our class site on facebook was recently uploaded with pictures from the event and they mad me laugh out loud even today!
Oops sorry. I just realized how much of a dirty rotten sinner I sound like because I can quote lines from the movie Dirty Dancing. Sorry, it was quite cult like in the 80's!
"Party like it's 1999" and thinking whew that is forever away and I will be in my 30's then GASP!!!I also remember having the biggest crush on a boy I met at church camp and my parents knew his parents so for homecoming my tenth grade year they let him come stay at our house for the weekend and I dreamed of us dancing romantically to Journey's "Open Arms" The time came, we gussied up, went to the dance, he met my friends and said these words, "This is one bad mamma jamma of a dance" - Kiss of death - I lost IMMEDIATE interest- I mean I was from the sticks and we didn't even say anything that uncool! Those were the days.
Ok, back when I was in the 8th grade, there was song that I think was called "Something". The first words are "Something in the way, she moves. Attract me like no other lover."... Of course at the time I had NOT A CLUE what that even possibly meant! We just loved the slow song and slow dance that went with it and didn't even wonder at the meaning of the words. I have even just now shocked myself that I liked this song and that was 33 years ago....
Beth
Well I have to say I did not attend many dances, due to the fact I have no rhythm and can not dance except slow dancing. But at my wedding in the 80's one of our songs was "You Decorated My Life", how goofy was that song if you read the lyrics. Oh well if at that time I was more in tune with God than getting married I am sure our choice of somgs would have been more geared to God. A pastor recently said to us you did not have that sung at your wedding, oh yes indeed, he looked at us with one of those looks only mothers give. oh well thought I would add this.
Alexia
Man, I am so old!
"Jeremiah was a Bull Frog" (and that was high school).
I can't even remember Junior High songs. But there is one memory... this really cute and very sweet boy (Craig) asked me to dance and I did not know how, but I said yes, got out on the dance floor...got so flustered...grabbed a girl friend and said "Here dance with her" and I left. To his credit, he never mentioned it and he was still nice to me. Oh the trauma of Jr. High!
Melana in Wyoming
Only dance I went to was square dancing. In 6th grade (lived in California at that time) we had outdoor school and one night we got to square dance. We learned in school for this one night. I loved it. One night and it was over. Never danced again. I did love Barry Manilow and the Bee Gees.
What can I say, I lived a boring life.
I only went to my prom my junior year and went with a guy I was so totally nuts over, but I was a nervous cat. Interesting points:
1. He showed in a limo! This was 1984...not the norm!
2. I had a beautiful frilly lavender dress and while we were eating a little girl pointed to me and said, "Look Mommy, it's Cinderella!" That was the highlight of my night!
3. We were both so nervous we only danced on slow songs, and we didn't even really dance too close.
4. For our "after prom" fun, he took me to his favorite hangout, the video game arcade! I tell you no lie siestas! I have never been a fan of them, but there were all the greased up loners who had no date to prom (probably because they were too chicken to ask someone!) and we got heckled to no end.
Needless to say, that was the end of whatever could have become of the two of us!
O:)
Melissa
Winter formal the song was I will survive by Gloria Gaynor this was during the disco era. This takes me way back
Maybe Beth can relate to this one because it happened at her old Alma Mater - Northbrook High School.
I was in the tenth grade and he was in the ninth grade. We shared an Algebra Class together. His name was Russell and I had the biggest crush on him. He was a jock, I was a chubby but funny girl! Oh my granny! I was in love with that boy!!!
We had our school dances in the gymnasium. Russell knew I had a major crush on him but he was still way out of my league. I am talking MAJOR BABE here!!! He was such a hunk! (LOL) Feathered back hair. Total FOX! ( are these words really coming out of my mouth right now!?)
He came over to ask me to dance to Peaches and Herb - "Reunited"
It was a nice slow song and I was in Heaven!!! I was also extremely nervous because everyone was watching us. When the song was over I ran out to the commons and called my Algebra Teacher from the pay phone near the lockers to tell her of my glorious fate!!! She was excited with me!!
I'm still very good friends with that Algebra Teacher - haven't got a clue what happened to Russell.
And no Beth, it was not Russell Mooney!! I am a little younger than you...
Just for grins, here is the song.
Feel free to sing along, Siestas!
Take a trip to yesteryear!
REUNITED
HERB
I was a fool to ever leave your side
Me minus you is such a lonely ride
The breakup we had has made me lonesome and sad
I realize I love you 'cause I want you bad, hey, hey
PEACHES
I spent the ev'ning with the radio
Regret the moment that I let you go
Our quarrel was such a way of learnin' so much
I know now that I love you 'cause I need your touch, hey, hey
CHORUS: BOTH
Reunited and it feels so good
Reunited 'cause we understood
There's one perfect fit
And, sugar, this one is it
We both are so excited 'cause we're reunited, hey, hey
PEACHES
I sat here starin' at the same old wall
Came back to life just when I got your call
I wished I could climb right through the telephone line
And give you what you want so you will still be mine, hey, hey
HERB
I can't go cheatin', honey, I can't play
I found it very hard to stay away
As we reminisce on precious moments like this
I'm glad we're back together 'cause I missed your kiss, hey, hey
CHORUS: BOTH
Yeah, yeah, yeah
Ba-a-a-by
Lover, lover, this is solid love
And you're exactly what I'm dreamin' of
All through the day
And all through the night
BOTH: I'll give you all the love I have with all my might, hey, hey
Oh my....I almost feel too old to comment! I lived in Brasil my high school years and The Beach Boys were IT!! I also remember a lot of The Byrds, (anyone out there???) and really whatever anyone would bring back from being in the states! One song I always remember dancing to at school dances was "Gloria"....anyone?? What great memories of a very neat high school and very special people!
there are so many embarassing moments to choose from. Saigon kick did a version of In the still of the night that I just LOVED. This "boy" that I was crazy about introduced me to it. well a cousin and myself talked about him endlessly and i was 15 year old nuts about him....on a tape..yes my voice recorded on a tape that he later listened to on a road trip home. So here I was with a tape of my teenage feelings and no way to deny any of them. I could have died when I heard they popped it in the tape deck and played it thinking it was something else and listend to our intense conversation about my feelings. major sad face
Oh brother...I honestly LOVE music, so there are a million stories I connect with song. My sister and Mom say I have "musical turretts" because people will be talking and I'll just start spitting out a song...in my defense, it usually has something to do with something that was just said...or, some of the same words atleast... anyway...how about "Tender Love" by Force MD's? Or, "Mr. Telephone Man, there's something wrong with my line. Cause when I dial my babys number, I get a click everytime..." by New Edition...or "Day by Day" by the Hooters. Now, seriously girls, we danced like we had never walked, much less danced, a day in our life when that crazy song came on. I don't know, there was just something about it that made you look like you were violently ill when you would dance to it. Anyone know what I'm talking about??
These are hilarious! Glad to see I am not the only one not allowed to go to dances or prom.
My song that stops me in my tracks and bring me to happy tears is
Dan Fogelberg's song 'Longer'. My sweetie played it as he proposed to me, dubbing it our song. My sweet sister in love sang it through tears at our wedding.
I adore this man of mine and the song he chose for us. I even surprised him by having 'I will love you, longer than' engraved inside his wedding band.
Sappy but true! Oh, where's the tissue for goodness sakes!!
How about Michael Jackson's "You Wanna Be Starting Something"! Me and my best friend Shawn (a girl) in the sixth grade spent hours making up a dance to that song so that we would look good at the middle school dance- way back in the 80's! The chorus goes "Too high to get over (yeah, yeah), too low to get under (yeah, yeah), you're stuck in the middle, (yeah, yeah), and the pain is thunder!" I bet you can just picture what our dance moves looked like!!
You are killin' me here! That is so funny, and I can totally relate. Except of course the part about your mom being a rockstar in the Bible study world. That is not a part of my reality! Anyway, the song that brings me back to those awkward adolescent days is pretty much any Boys II Men song. Especially, "End of the Road" which was the most memorable one from my freshman homecoming dance. Ah, the innocence and absurdity of being a teenager! :) Thanks for the flashbacks, it made me laugh out loud after a rough day!
terri facedown...I was a major Dirty Dancing fan too. It really didn't have any moral messages did it? Anytime, I hear Hungry Eyes or I 've had the time of my life I think of that movie.
Oh, I would never want to relive Jr. High... please, no thanks! I went to my 7th Grade & 8th Grade dances and man alive... I never even touched a guy at either... just the girls you know. But, oh the ordeal over the clothes... especially 8th grade... I knew some girls were going all out formal and my mom wouldn't hear of it... so I ended up with a nice church-ish outfit... i still remember it, how I wore my hair, everything... and my best friend did dance with a boy... any Boyz 2 Men song transports me back to that dance...
The question of what takes one back to the past could not have come at a better time. This past weekend I went up into the attic to clean out many boxes which included the boxes that housed my middle through high school year books. My daughter went with me so she could travel down memory lane with me. Her and I had a great job reading all those "corny" sayings that are written in most year books. The reason she enjoyed looking at the "old" pictures from long ago is her orthodontist and I went to school together. She enjoyed laughing at his pictures more than her own mom.
High school doesn't bring back great memories for me due to my crippled family life at that time. God did bless me with some great friends that I still keep in touch with after 27 years. It was fun looking at the funny clothes and hairstyles.
Terrie
I was sent down memory lane this past Tuesday but not by a song. On Tuesday I went to look at a house and I swear I stepped back in time. The house and neighborhood reminded me of so many summers spent with my cousins at the lake.
I can see the deer walking up to us and eating out of our hands, reading the day away in the hamock, and of course all the fun time on the lake.
Anyways, as far as songs that will take me back any George Strait song will take be back to a specific time. I always refused to dance with a guy I liked to any George Strait song just in case it didn't work out I didn't want that song to "ruined" for me.
Middle School was The Hustle, and all the "cool" girls did a dance to it in our talent show at school...I was NOT one of the cool girls then...but I sure am now! LOL
High School--no dance was complete without Stairway to Heaven and Louie, Louie....(are there even actual words in that song?)
Ok, believe it or not, at my prom I was pregnant. Early on in it morning noon and night sickness pregnant. And ANYTHING by Whitney Houston during that time made me literally get sick. I don't know why, but even if something came on the radio I'd have to pull my car over and, well, you know.
So, dontcha know, when they played "I Wanna Dance With Somebody" that night at the prom, I ran for the nearest trash can.
Good times.
(Today, whenever I happen to hear that very same song, I swear to you I can feel my stomach start churning!)
I only remember one dance besides my jr. & sr. prom. I did not have a date. Dances were more fun without a date at my school. The one thing I remember about that dance is doing "the bump". Can't say I remember the songs. But just saying I did the bump pretty well dates me.
Being a "PK", my dad pretty weel censored anything I tried to listen to. Listening to some of those songs now, I think no wonder. Growing up in the 70's there are so many favorites.
If there songs in the 80's, I tell my sister-in-love, I was busy taking care of my babies. I don't have a clue what the songs were then.
Thanks for taking us back down memory lane.
We didn't have junior high dances, but did have them in high school. The main groups that we always danced to were the Doobie Brothers, Three Dog Night, Chicago, and Creedence Clearwater Revival. I can remember slow dancing to "Ain't No Sunshine" and counting the "I know"s in the song. Also, "How do you mend a broken heart?" by the BeeGees was good for tears after a break-up. This post certainly brought back memories. Thanks Melissa.
When I was in 7th grade, I had a HUMONGOUS crush on this boy. The kind all your little friends are sick of hearing about. It came time for our school's Halloween dance, which was incredibly informal, but exciting nonetheless when you're 12. I got it into my head that by the end of the night I was gonna dance with Crush Boy.
I finally got my nerves in order and approached Crush Boy and asked him to dance. In typical pre-adolescent boy style, he promptly said "no." Deflated, I started to walk away, but then felt I deserved some sort of explanation. Turning back, I demanded to know why he wouldn't dance with me. I should have left while I was ahead, because his answer was "because you're ugly."
Now, before you feel too sorry for me, bear in mind that at that time I was completely convinced that I was one good-lookin' gal. My good self-esteem had veered into vanity, so I didn't believe him for a minute. However, I was still mortally offended that he would say such a thing in a crowded gym where we were surrounded by other equally gallant boys. So I did the only thing I could think of: I shoved him to the floor.
Full of the thrill of victory (and nearly swooning at my uncharacteristic show of violence) I left the gym and never looked back.
This has been such a fun post to read! Loveshack always takes me back to high school dances b/c my BFFs and I would always run out to the floor and dance in a big circle when the DJ played it.
And I also love the Cha-Cha Slide. When I taught high school a couple of years ago, I would always run out and participate when I was chaperoning at prom. As someone else mentioned, I also am not really sure how to cha-cha.:)
Stevie Wonder "Superstition". That first boyfriend in the 8th grade grew up and died of Aids. What sadness.
I am having entirely too much fun reliving all this, but I have to say - the Peaches & Herb lyrics are just about to do me in! Cannot.stop.laughing!! = D
okay - "Ghostbusters" - just came on Bravo & I was instantly transported. "Who you gonna call?"Even my husband said 'I bet that will bring back some memories!
I danced to Boys 2 Men...I'll Make Love to You! AND I THOUGHT I KNEW EXACTLY WHAT IT MEANT!!! So clueless! HAHA!!! I sang along with gusto..."Throw Your clothes, On the floor...I'm gonna take my clothes off too!" Oh my...
Whenever I hear the song "Takin' Care of Business" by BTO. I graduated in 1976, in case your're wondering. My grandmother made me a green, double-knit skirt & long-sleeved jacket (how darling--not!). I was so hot and itchy in it that I could hardly dance! It's the only school dance I ever went to in my life zwonder why?). Thanks for funny memory.
I remember my first middle school dance. It wasn't a formal dance or anything, just something after school. Well my mom made me wear a skirt... a pink denim skirt with big pleats. It was awful. No one else wore a skirt and I was so embarrassed. To make matters worse, when the Christmas dance came around there was a boy who really liked me but I didn't really like him, who asked me to the dance. His parents were friends of my parents and he asked my mom to take me, so I went. It was sweet in hindsight, but my mom, of course, made me wear a dress. It was a tank dress that she had made - red, with little penguins sledding through Christmas trees. My date, of course, wore sweatpants and a t-shirt. I don't think we danced one dance together!
Melissa, I told my husband this story over dinner from when I heard it earlier...too funny! Oh my goodness isn't it crazy how music or a certain scent just make the memories come flooding back!
Did anyone say 4PM "Sukiyaki"??? Please tell me someone remembers this song? Or Celine Dion "Power of Love". I think those were from 7TH grade for me oh man they take me back! There are just SO many!
And what about scents...Calvin Klien anyone! This is my favorite post yet! Goodnight! LOL
Oh man...I was 14, it wasn't a dance, but it was the END of the world because I was leaving my summer boyfriend in Colorado to head back to Germany where my parents were missionaries. Our song: Right Here Waiting For You by Richard Marx... CAN NOT listen to the song without laughing now.
Oceans apart day after day
And I slowly go insane (Because 14 year olds are known for their slow descent into hormonial insanity???)
I hear your voice on the line (not really because my mom and dad won't pay for me to make the long distant phone call)
But it doesn't stop the pain
If I see you next to never (which is a huge probability since I'm OCEANS APART)
How can we say forever (Well we can't because I'm ONLY 14)
Wherever you go
Whatever you do
I will be right here waiting for you (HA)
Whatever it takes
Or how my heart breaks
I will be right here waiting for you
I took for granted, all the times (that whole 2 months)
That I though would last somehow
I hear the laughter, I taste the tears
But I can't get near you now
Oh, can't you see it baby
You've got me goin' CrAzY
It only lasted till he wrote me a letter telling me would wait for me until I could come home for college...I had a cold, didn't feel good and the neediness got me...so I broke up with him.
What I am about to write is true. If only I could change it to protect the innocent. There is not one detail yet that doesn't cause me to wince with embarrassment. But, dear Melissa, we can't back away from the truth of the 70s....
My hair was parted in the middle, and it was neither silky nor as long as Marcia Brady's. I wore a salt and pepper flecked blue ribbed bodysuit and elephant-bell bottom turquoise corduroy pants with four silver studs on the hip-hugger waist. The bodysuit had two snaps at the bottom, and yes, before Grand Funk Railroad finished "The Locomotion," they had snapped HARD and flung themselves up out of my pants. I was painfully self-conscious as it was, and moreso because I had asked Heart-throb Alan the Jock to this Sadie Hawkins, and I knew his MOTHER had made him go with me. I was dreaming of wearing his Speidel ID bracelet and living happily ever after, and he was dreaming of dating the head cheerleader and playing pro baseball (both of which he ended up doing.) By the end of the excruciating evening, all of which I am sure was reported to my dad, who was a school principal at another school - I feel your pain, Melissa - I could barely keep from sobbing as Nilsson Schmilsson wailed, "I can't liiiiiiiive if living is without youuuuu, I can't live, I can't give anymooooorrree, ohhh, oohhh" - oh, ask your mom about that song. It was a tragic end to a tragic, awkward evening. Would anyone even take a million dollars to relive junior high?
Inga....Awwwwww. That's so sweet.
My hubs sang Lionel Richie's "Truly" to me at our wedding. Sniff. Here let me get you a tissue too.
Melana
This takes me back to the beginning of the need for Breaking Free. He was so cute and I spent far too much time daydreaming about him...and that song, which one was it??? Open Arms by Journey? Crazy on You by Heart? or something by Styxx?
I have laughed so hard reading these comments.
Teri-Facedown... your post since me over the edge into tears with "Nobody puts baby in a corner" and walking off carrying a watermelon!
I never went to any dances but do have memories of roller skating to Madonna at the local skating rink.
Vogue!
I spent my highschool years in Minot North Dakota and the ONLY thing there was to do was to go rollerskating. Plus that was where all the G.I's from the airforce base hung out :)In Fact that is where i meet my husband. I asked him to skate with me on a ladies choice couples skate. He asked me out on a date for the next night which happened to be my 18th birthday, we were engaged 3 months later and this coming april we will be celebrating our 25th wedding anniversary. I think Airsupply, All out of Love , and He's so shy are probably the ones that reminds me the most of that time. Although whenever i hear "Brick House" i want to go dust off my rollerskates and hit the floor!
7th grade end of the year road rally...we had a dance to end it all and my crush finally asked me to dance. We danced to "Eternal Flame" by the Bangles. Every single time I hear that song, I think of Rick!
It was my 8th grade dance, My mother had made my dress, and we had been working on it for 2 months. It was like a vampire dress, black lace on top of a deep simmery purple material and the bottom was a green velvet the sleeves also came to a point. I am just one of those girls that hated getting dressed up, so mostly uncomfortable. But I enjoyed the effort of my mom to make the dress. Sad to think of it now that I enjoyed the dress more than the date....lol
Born in early 1970s. Remember middle school "skating parties", more than dances during that time. Fun 80s music. The DJ would announce the "slow skate" and boys and girls would try to find someone to skate with side by side for that one "special" song. Fun times!
Lol, I'm in my late teens and now I'm a little nervous about what I will look back at ten or twenty years from now and laugh my head off about. I guess I'll just enjoy my "coolness" while it remains cool :-).I don't have big hair, so I'm safe there at least. :-)
Well, definitely showing my age here but our prom theme song was The Theme from The Goodbye Girl. My kids say I look like I'm getting married in my prom picture. Off white, long sleeved, high necked, gunny sax dress. I loved it though. Happy Weekend to all...Joyce
In seventh grade, I found out my crush was going to be at the dance and that he "might" be interested in me. I had also heard that washing your hair in raw egg made it shiny. So I did. In warm water. Oh, the smell! I went to the dance anyway and sure enough, he asked me to dance! But nothing ever came of it, I wonder why...
It was my first jr high dance, nothing formal, and they couldn't get the sound system working. They played Van Halen's Dancing in the Streets over and over. Finally all systems were ago. Dennis Miller asked me to dance during the first slow song which I don't remember. I about panicked. Now my husband hunts on Dennis' parents land. Ha!
My whole adolescence was wrapped up in my youth group at church. Anytime I hear any song from Amy Grant's Age to Age, Straight Ahead or Unguarded. I feel like I'm right back in the early '80s and I feel just as insecure and awkward as I did then. In addition, any song from Chicago or Journey can do the same. I'm so glad those days are over, but I'm reliving them with my kids.
Blessings to all,
Stephanie
I have been sitting at work crackin up - it's good to know that I am not neurotic and that people will relate to me when I spill this - almost 10 years ago I fell in love for the first time (I was 16) and the smell of Curve and the song "Breathe" by Faith Hill never fails to take me back to that precious, awkward, heartbreaking time period. By the way, he broke up with me right before Junior Prom. It's taken me years and therapy to get over THAT one (kidding). :)
Richard Palmer's, Addicted to Love.
Girlfriend, let me tell ya, was I ever...in all, ALL the wrong places, addicted to love. Makes me cringe thinking about all the dumb, dumb, DOUBLE DUMB, things I did. I can't help but think that song is so true...many of us are addicted to love, perhaps every one of us. While this post is true, I'm laughing because today I'm addicted to the love of Jesus, BABY!
I checked the blog last night after Bible study. And couldn't think of any particular song, perhaps because it is so long ago. But I do know that hearing a song can take me right back to the moment. And so do other things--last week I licked my finger after making my daughter's birthday cake--family recipe. And I closed my eyes and I was about ten years old sitting in my favorite spot at the dining room table in my childhood home with birthday cake being served on china. Now to admit that this memory is about 47 years old. But how blessed I am that I was able to call my parents and share the memory.
Freshman year of highschool my BFF and I had crushes on 2 "older" sophomores guys. During lunch our school had a jukbox on the stage and for .50 you could play 3 songs. We Always chose "Babe" by Styx. To this day I laugh everytime I hear it and can "see" our big hair and goofy smiles.
Unfortunately I don't remember many good times from middle school. I'm sure there were some, but I felt like a total misfit. It's where I first heard someone tell my best friend I was homely. So I love to read of your best/funniest moments. Life is good...I loved the disco era - call me dumb. But my best moment was dancing with my then boyfriend/now husband to many of the disco song and slow dancing to Cris Cross' Sailing.
I remember something about a breakup and Phil Collin's "Separate Lives". That's all I can stand to type as I will go hide my face in a pillow now.
This is a fun post! It's amazing how much we put out of our minds until one little thing jogs that memory and boom-flashes of immature, insecure, what were you thinking child! comes back to me.
So, Phil Collins Groovy Kind of Love and Tiffany's I think we're alone now take me back. So serious back then. I think I need these for the ipod now that I can laugh about it all. Ooh, one more thing. Let us girls (you know how old you are) hear the Yo! VIP let's kick it-why don't our men understand this?????
Okay, I read this last night and started to comment, but it's taken a good 12 hours to swallow my pride and tell this story. At my ninth grade athletic banquet dance, we were all having such a good time. I was looking good, I tell you. I know it because I was wearing my older sister's outfit, and you always look better in your older sister's clothes right? Well, the dance part was casual so I had on some classic early 90's shorts that were a pretty green with cream-colored polka dots and a perfectly matching scrunchie for my hair. There was DJ there, and at the height of technological advance, he even had a screen on which he could show videos and even us! Well, at one point, hot from dancing, I flipped my head over to make better use of my perfect scrunchie and pull my hair back into a ponytail and my friends grabbed me and turned me around to look at the screen...There, big as anything (and much larger than actual size) was my polka-dotted rear end! It stayed on the screen forEVER! In fact, he broke it into six boxes so everyone could see it numerous times at once. Even then, that DJ couldn't let it go...instead of just taking it off the screen, he let it fade smaller and smaller over the course of what seemed like hours. I was humiliated at first, but eventually, just laughed with everyone else...but I NEVER forgot that, and I don't think I borrowed my sister's clothes again either.
It was "Moon River" for me. My "boyfriend" (what do you know about boys at that age?)and I were driven by his parents to a city about 30 miles away to a birthday party for a friend who had moved away. That would be 7th grade. My mother made my dark pink knee length chiffon party dress. We thought we had arrived! We danced the night away until about 9:30. Those were the days. Dee
What a great idea for a blog. I have enjoyed reading everyone's comments so much.
For me the memory is of my 7th Grade Fall Football Dance. It was my very first dance ever. I couldn't believe it when my crush asked me to dance. I honestly don't even remember the song that was playing because I was so nervous and excited all at the same time. That song seemed to last forever though. :)
Crimson and Clover, I am woman hear me roar, I shot the sherrif, ummm, hmm, I am only 37 but my parents ruled the 8 track!
"Eternal Flame" by The Bangels transports me back in time to a crazy summer during junior high. I had a crush on a boy in high school who would talk to me at the public swimming pool [I think I went to the pool nearly every day that summer just to see him]. He eventually ended up with a girl his own age and I was heartbroken. I don't think he knew it, but in my eyes "Eternal Flame" was our song. After he got his girlfriend I'd cry whenever I heard this song. Eventually I got over him, obviously I was a novelty and he probably talked to me just to be nice.
My mother would GASP if she knew I was admitting this...
I was ROLLER SKATING to The Gap Band... "You Dropped A Bomb on Me".
(NOTE: I was very, very young...)
I fell during that song and broke my arm.
How about Prince?? Or, LL Cool J? LOL! Or, Janet Jackson? (My mother would be holding her chest at this point...)
Then, there was that time of my life when "Every Rose Has It's Thorn.." brings the late 80's back to me. (She is out cold now...)
Senior prom... I had the big bangs (and I am not talking evolution). I wore a pink prom dress with LARGE bangs as my 'crown'. Big hair. BIG. Does anyone remember VAVOOM hairspray? I am from Indiana. I have always said I was dropped off too early by the stork. (I should have been from Texas because I love big hair.) I am certain Texas beauticians bought stock Vavoom hairspray.
I am certain we danced to Paula Abdul and Poison and Boys II Men...
WOW! Thanks for the blast from the past!
Oh, we're gonna date ourselves for sure with this one....
Dori! 6th blog down....I SOOO relate to those songs you picked! "Hello" (the Lionel Richie song) brought back such a funny memory for me. Just recently my teenagers saw the video for this song (remember the blind girl?) and I was reminiscing about this song...my son said "Mom, have you ever noticed that this video is a little creepy? I mean, the guy is stalking a blind girl!"
Never thought of it that way.....
Anyway, high school: sophomore year. The old Chicago song, "You're the Inspiration"...the line at the end of the song, "when you love somebody till the end of time" still just cracks me up. What did I know about loving someone til the end of time at the ripe old age of 15? Alas, the boy in question at the time and I parted ways a few weeks later.
So much for "till the end of time."
"hard to say I'm sorry" was the first rock/pop song I ever heard and the very next song I heard was Amy Grant's "sing your praise"
that was in 10th grade and i remember being so annoyed at the rest of the kids at the party 'cause I wanted to go back and listen to the song again and they wanted to move on to another one. Silly people, didn't they know my life had just been changed? up till then all I had ever heard was hymns and classical music on my dad's LPs.
I went to a wonderful Christian school where the entire high school consisted of 16 people (I know, right?!). And being on the conservative side of things we had Proms- but with no dancing. So needless to say we spent the evening on a beautiful river boat, in gorgeous gowns, eating delicious food bobbing our heads to a Veggie Tales soundtrack...ha!
It was lame at the time but now a mom of two little boys I know every word to great tunes like- Everyones Got A Water Buffalo, and Oh Where Is My Hairbrush?
Lauren
I didn't really want to go to the prom- not because of the dress and dancing and all, but because I felt that if I -who are we kidding? my parents- were going to spend money on a dress then I ought to be taken somewhere out of central no-where and have the dance somewhere other than the smelly gym. Alas, I went against my own instincts with a friend. Except he thought he wanted to be more than a friend at then end of the evening and tried to kiss me so I turned and let him have a mouthful of big hair held together with Rave more than likely (Aqua Net was so jr. high). So, When I See You Smile takes me back- it was the theme that year.
Two songs, Faithfully by Journey in junior high.
Then I remember the boys trying to dance to "Footloose." It was not pretty.
Mine is "I Don't Want to Miss A Thing" by Aerosmith from the movie Armageddon. In eighth grade, I was a j.v. cheerleader and there was a certain 9th grade football player that I was always a little interested in. We never "went out," but we had three different dances that year, and we always found each other across the dance floor when that song began to play!
I have it!!
Close your eyes...
It's the mid 80's.
Tom Cruise is wearing a bomber jacket...
Can you still hear..
"Great Balls of Fire"?
"Heaven In Your Eyes"? (Wasn't that Loverboy that sang that???)
And who could forget, "Take My Breath Away"??? What a movie.
My boyfriend at the time had a leather jacket and he wore Lagerfeld cologne. In my mind, I had my own fighter pilot... LOL.
Thank you, Lord, for YEARS of grace and mercy and forgiveness.
HA HA! SO funny!! Okay, well, when I was in eighth grade a kid from our church had a serious crush on me, but I was not even remotely attracted to him. We were both in the school play at at the cast party after the final performance, he asked me to dance. I didn't know how to say no - and didn't feel like that would be very nice - so, I agreed. However, I couldn't even look at him, and I would barely touch him, so, with my fingertips barely brushing his shoulders, my arms outstretched completely, I swayed to one song with him, while talking to my friend, who was dancing next to me. Wow. It still makes me feel uncomfortable to think about it!
Prince (yes, the artist formerly known as Prince) ~~ In high school I rode to school with my across-the-street neighbor, Jack. He was such a blast and had a fun VW bug. Every day, morning and afternoon, we rocked out LOUD to the cassette tape "1999." I always smile and think of Jack when I hear Prince.
