The Results are in...We're Twelve

Howdy there Ladies!

I could go on and on and on about how fun it was to meet so many of you face-to-face. For those who were not at the Siesta Fiesta, please trust me when I say that we have the best and most diverse blogging community you can even imagine. Truly.

I have been obsessing over two things this week: 1) Lit- the upcoming Bible Intro course (TOTAL OBSESSION) and, 2) Colin’s company-wide Chili Cook-Off. I have always loved chili-cook-offs. So, I’ve spent most of the week slaving in the kitchen, trying desperately to come up with the “perfect” chili recipe. Well, after hours of anxiety this morning, I have just been informed by my husband that the official results are in.

Our chili, chili number 8, placed third.

I hate third place. No, I loathe third place. Third place is a euphemism for the cold, hard, truth. Our chili was simply the very worst of the best. To use biblical language, our chili was metaphorically a “lukewarm” chili. And nobody likes a lukewarm anything. Not even Jesus, according to a very allegorical & fanciful interpretation of Revelation 3:16.

This was word-for-word the very mature text-message conversation that Colin and I had about an hour ago:

Colin: 3rd place babe!!! People are like, “What’s in that!!!? That’s awesome!”
Melissa: 3rd Place is the worst.
Colin: Not it’s not. 8th is! The Judges didn’t even taste it with the onion, cilantro, or sour cream, babe.
Melissa: Who won then?
Colin: Paul, Chris, Us.
Melissa: Silence. (Didn’t feel like texting back...two MEN won!!!)
Colin: It’s gone! Everyone thinks our chili is the best! There were only like 5 judges. Our chili is the one that's disappearing the fastest! The real test is which crockpot has the least left at the end!
Melissa: Silence. (Still don’t feel like texting back)
Colin: Everyone keeps saying they love the chili. For real, babe. It’s gone. People here want the recipe.
Melissa: I refuse to duplicate a recipe for a third-place and third-rate chili.

We’re like twelve-year olds, and playing house. This really is dangerous, folks. And babe, if you're reading out there, I hate to break it to you, but it's a mean world, for the judges' decision was the only one that carried any weight.

Love,
An Ex-Chili-Cook-Off Lover

P.S. Colin just called and assured me that the decision was “rigged” and that ours was the best. Oh, and apparently we won a ribbon. A RIBBON. Seriously.

Congratulations! Have you tried Chili with Cream Cheese in it?

Now I think I want to make some chili. I sprouted my beans b/4 cooking and didn't have a gas problem after eating them.

Praise the LORD!
Thanks for all the Prayers for my son Bryan. I had emailed TBN months ago. I had told them I hadn't listened to TBN for awhile an turned it on the night b/4 I got my son's call about the cancer. The words I heard when I turned to TBN was Don't worry when you hear bad news. The next day my son called about the cancer.
This is an email I recieved from ddil this morning. Some of the words might be Swedish. But most of it is written in English. He can't have visitors for 24hrs.

Hi All.

I dont know much yet, but I called the hospital and the place where Bryan will be during his stay there, she could tell
me that he was not back up om his room yet, but they had told her that the op was sucsessfull and they did not find any
other tumors in there, it looked like they thought it would and they got i all out.
Ops, she called me now again, he has been awake and he got no pains! They epidural is doing it´s job. He felt nausia
when he woke up, but he got pills for it and got better. He is sleeping at the moment. They would tell him to call me when
he wakes up.

I will get back to you when I know more.

Love to you all!

I'm sure your chili was the best. I like to make it with venison.

I have a question about the conference last weekend. (Maybe this will distract your mind from the chili.) I think your mom mention you told her about a Christian woman from California who was in the Olympics. What was her name?

Thanks!

Oh, my dear! Melissa, I'm so sorry! I feel your pain. Well, not as a cook since I don't esp. like that word but I think third place should just be dropped from the board altogether. First and second do well- there's a winner and a loser...okay, that's a little harsh and not entirely true. Let me stop my crazy fingers after advising a little more obsessing over "Lit"- that's where the Fire is cooking all by Itself! It's the First and the Last and everything in between. Let it consume you, sweetie. That's where your heart's really at anyway.

Love you!

LIT=TOTAL OBSESSION and earned the first place ribbon so how could chilli #8 earning the #2 position by yourself expect to surpass the TOTAL OBSESSION???? A#3 Ribbon is superchillicious!!!!! because it keeps your TOTAL OBSESSION in the right place.....Father knows BEST...yes he does!!!! (i love your stories from the playhouse!!!!)

On the ride home I turned to my husband and my 3 precious ( looking to there Mama to raise them right) daughters and vowed with fire in my eyes " I will never take 3rd in a chili cook-off again" . My husband consoled " Honey , it's ok" and I snarled back "oh no it's not" . Next year I sat as the annoucement was made that indeed, My "fire in the hole" chili had won first place . I proudly walked up on the stage and recieved my wooden spoon with the words" first place" ,written w/ a sharpie, no less!

Persevere! Let this 3rd place take you higher , there will be another cook-off!

The Lord is still working on my pride !

It was a total mess by the time the "judging" came to pass - I was humiliated. Obviously, I got right back in the kitchen, though. Dear Melissa,

People from Georgia DO NOT know a "thang" about chili!! You won fair and square merely from the fact that you are a TEXAN!!! They were just prejudice (and jealous!). Actually, all they really wanted was for someone to provide free lunch for the office!

One time we had a chili cook-off at our church. I got THE BEST chili recipe ever and slaved for 3 days! I cut up the sirloin steak into 1/2" cubes. It was painful and tedious. It was alot of meat, a lot of preparation and a lot of work. Dummy me burned the stuff while cooking it on site. I was soooooooooooooo upset!! I tried putting potatoes in the pot to take away the burned taste. It didn't work. Go figure. My team insisted that I still enter it in the contest because we had all worked so hard and diligently. Man am I ever glad I did. I got my number, entered our dish, and put it with the other tasty and tantalizing bowls of pure Texas porridge.

The next thing I did was what made it all worthwhile... I got my video camera! I watched as the judges took their turn and their time tasting each entry and making their marks on the scorecards. When they got to mine, boy was it all worth it!! I never saw such horrified looks in all my life!! A poker face they did not have!!! They showed their utter disgust with every bite. I was laughing so hard I accidentally peed a little bit! It was the funniest thing I ever saw. I am so glad I still have that video. The best part about it is that nobody else knew which bowl was mine!!! HA HA HA HA HA HA!!! (sinister laugh)

Don't be sad about third place. With all of your Bible Study background and knowledge, you should know by now that 3 is a perfect number - and a number of completion. 'Nuff said!

Keep cookin' my Rachael, Paula, Martha friend!

You should see this almost 30 year old moron leaving her nieces and nephews in the dust. I always loathed the Honorable Mention award. I won an Honorable Mention ribbon at an art fair when I was in the 4th grade. I remember thinking the award meant I was better than first... after all the ribbon was gold not blue! I knew they gave Gold medals in the Olympics. Imagine a broken hearted fourth grader when I realized I was one of many that received Honorable Mention. I guess my artwork was worthy to be mentioned! Ha Ha!

I also remember a chili/soup cookoff at church a few years ago. I made a wonderful "homemade" cheddar corn chowder and a gal who NEVER, I mean never cooks beat me - with frozen, store bought onions in her soup. I had used my santuko knife to chop my onions - just the way Martha Stewart taught me! ;) It's been a running joke since that my pal who never cooks beat the gal that cooks all the time. I guess it all depends on the judges!

Love your re-cap! I can empathize with you Siesta! You'll get em next time!

Gayle,

I actually did put beans in my chili (black-beans) but Texans don't usually add beans to their chili. My Dad literally wouldn't have eaten it if there were kidney beans in it...black beans are smaller and I think they are the best of both worlds. Chili is very intimate, you know?

Melissa,
I can truly feel your pain. My husband Tim had a soup contest a couple of months ago at his work. It had to be a soup that was healthier, tasted good, etc. So the night before I took one of my baked potato soup recipes and started tweaking it to make it remotely healthier than it should be. The whole next day I waited on pins and needles in learning the outcome. And all I have to say, is that atleast you got 3rd. I didn't even place. My husband tried to reassure me that everyone ate/loved/devoured my soup and they wanted the recipe. My soup was one of the few that was completely gone whilst the winner still had some left.

He assured me that it was rigged and that everyone liked mine better, except for the judges. It does stink. It won't make me quit cooking, but it won't have me enter anymore contests at his work. Who wants to enter a rigged competition, right??
Here's a hug from one cook to another.God Bless.

Melissa, You are so funny. I mean seriously I told my oldest today how she has a similar personality to Amanda and my fireball is my younger, Taylor.

How cool is that. Okay, so I have a short, maybe, story to tell. My mother was "stay-at-home" all my life. If my dad had a "cooking" related thing at work - she would whip up something family recipe, homemade and fabulous. Every time they would put in a special order with my dad, my mom came through.

Fast Forward like 30 years later... My dad retires in 2003 (that would actually be 35 years) but who's counting? At his retirement party we threw them we planned to give my mom some very special gifts like a "35 Years of Faithful Service as a Wife and Mother" honor plaque and such. Anyway, we did just that, but my dad's work trumped us - who knew?

At his big celebration at work, they presented my father with not one, but two Cracker Barrel rocking chairs in oak finish because my dad always told everyone there that when he retired my mom would be retiring, too, since she was the one who really kept him going all those years. It was just, just precious.

Now, my dad actually cooks. He can be the supper, breakfast and the "run to Subway" for lunch man anytime of the night or day. Well, maybe not the Subway part in the middle of the night. But you get the picture.

Mom says that when he retired so did her stove and so he uses it up. LOL! It does get better, the growing pains of being a newlywed is what I would call it. Half the battle is admitting you have a "problem" ... So, I'd say you are half way there! Blessings.

I need to tell you that I enjoyed you most of all at the Siesta Fiesta in SA. I just wanted to take you home with me. You are just the funniest thing I have ever met(well almost met). It was the "You both have Great Boobs too" comment that just did it for me. That look of innocence when Beth's mouth just dropped open. I thought I would split I was laughing so hard. That is just the kind of comment I would have made. You were probably supposed to be one of my children. Now this chili thing. Girl you are just too cute! You are still just a baby. I know you will win first place next time. Besides you know men have to have their egos strocked and I am sure that is why they won! Don't give up!
Love ya

That said, I live in NW Atlanta, and I agree with the rest of you:

it is waaaaaaaaaay too hot to be having a chili cookoff!

There's your parameters.

So maybe, October? :)

I'm sorry you didn't win and after slaving in the kitchen, too. At least it wasn't one of those Pillsbury bake-off's where $100,000 was the prize! Oh Melissa! I feel you on this one! I don't even enter things anymore because it hurts my feelings too much if I don't win! I don't make chili but I do scrapbook, and at some of the get-togethers they will do a page contest. I take it so personally if I don't win - all those other ppl judging me! And I'm judging them too! So I don't even do it anymore because the only opinion I'd like to care about is God's! I don't always succeed that that though, believe me!
I'll tell you what - I'll bet God thinks your chili is fabulous! :)

Just for you, I will post my famous chili recipe tomorrow. Really, it's so good! And the secret ingredient? Cocoa. It makes me happy to have chocolate in a main course.

Melissa,
I am a southern girl in a family full of women who love to cook and men who love to eat. One of the men's favorite pasttimes is to see how they can get their woman to cook whatever they are desiring at that moment. We will all be together, my husband, my in-laws and our children( oldest son is married to a lovely- precious- Bible- loving- God- fearing fabulous cook also) and this is how the conver sation will go: My hubby" Mother that was a great meal! It can't be topped. Michelle (that's me) I bet you can't make that as good as mother. (Me-Blood pressure rising!) Probably not I say. Father-in-law: Oh I bet she can she can make anything Judy can make even better sometimes (mother-in-law fuming) Son to daughter-in-law: Can you make this? I don't think you can. (Daughter-in-law already going through recipes in her head for the next gathering at her house) Before you know it all three women are inviting everyone over to partake in their culinary talents and the conversation with the men just happens all over again. It didn't take us long to figure out they are just trying to keep these gourmet meals going! Just a thought but sounds to me like the men in colin's office are getting the great end of this deal!! Eating chili all day and figuring out how to get the next meal catered by their wives at work!!!!! You are too funny and you keep making that chili, third place or not I bet Colin eats everything you make with the biggest smile on his face! Feed that boy! Can't wait to hear about LIT!

How do we do an online chili cook-off? It would probably take too long. My husband insists on kidney beans in the chili. Oh well. He's from Kansas. What can you do? My favorite is my no-bean green chili special! But I have to make that just for me.

I like the comment that 3rd place keeps you from making chili cook-offs your obsession. Lets you keep your perspective and not get off track. What if you had won? You would have to cook chili all the time! The pressure to excel would be awful. You would probably have to go on tour and everything! Who has time for that?!

I am with everyone else. You are so funny. This post made me laugh out loud. I can totally relate though. I love to bake, it use to be that everyone would tell me how whatever I baked was the best. I moved a couple of years ago and well, there are so many great bakers here that I almost never hear it anymore. Now don't get me wrong they all like what I make, it is just that it is not the best. Childish of me I know.

This week I have been very preoccupied with being sick and getting ready for camping. After the great time we all had in SA, the week was such a let down. And camping in the rain. ugh. But alas I am alone in this thinking because everyone else in my family loves camping. So the next thing to figure out is, what to take to the 2 potlucks. Imagine not one but two potlucks while camping. Anyway just a whining. I bet your chili was the best. Kim B. in AZ

However, since I am probably the world's worst chili cook, I am pretty impressed with 3rd. Now, if they had a contest for potato soup, I would totally demolish that competition.
Again...prayers for competitiveness? Yeah, I'd day we need those.

Enjoy your victory, it is what the poeple like that shows who has the best chili!

Oh and I must add this...today I went to lunch with a friend at a new restaurant and it was not goo!

You are hilarious. I'd like to say that I understand what you are talking about, but I gave up overachieving when I got out of college. As for the beans, I might try those black beans because I am not a big fan of the kidney shaped ones. Let's just say that, Like Beth, I greatly value my suppa man. He does cook the manly way, mostly on a grill, but he can make a mean gumbo. Major change of subject here, but is there anyway to get a CD set of the messages from San Antonio? I just couldn't keep up with all the notes. I really don't make too many comments here because it just seems like there are so many of us, and well, I am a bit shy in big groups, but I read the blog all the time. I didn't make it to the Fiesta because I was visiting an old friend in SA. But, the point is, I love the way you guys share your life with us. God is using you(LPM in general) and you, Melissa, and your family to teach me so much. Thank you for being so real and pointing the way to the One and Only.

Are you planning on taping Lit at all or adapt it for a Bible Study? I know the idea is to be more directly involved with the class members than in the other Sunday school classes, but it would be wonderful to have something of that nature available for the rest of us! May God bless you in the preparation! Being an instrument through the Spirit to get people excited about God's Word will definitely not earn a third place in His kingdom.
As far as cooking goes, I'll be TOO grateful for a third place, Amen???!

I must admit I laughed at the retelling. But my siesta are so right...seriously...chili in August? And no offense to Georgians, but if you had served that chili in TX...blue ribbon no doubt. I also agree that something seems a little fishy (not referencing the chili, of course) for 2 men to win out over a Betty Crocker like you. Somethin's just not right about that. Hmmmm. Remember what the Scriptures say about judging others? I double dog dare old Paul and Chris to let US be the judge of their chili...Then we'd just see about this 3rd place rip off.

Sorry...I was being 12, too. Must admit it's kinda fun!

I have 3 days to decide which bible study class to join: either Wising Up or Breaking Free.
Which one should I do since I have to pick bw them?

I've been a Christian forever, but just started doing bible studies a little over a year ago, I've done 2 so far... A Woman's Heart (changed my whole outlook on life and helped me release bitterness for an ex-husband with a slippery zipper, and a sister who hasn't spoken to me in almost 3 years.) and No Other Gods.
So there's some history... help me pick, somebody please?

Hey even though you got the "lukewarm", 3rd place, white ribbon award; at least they weren't "spewing it out of their mouth"! That's a victory right there....

Melissa, if you ever, I mean EVER, think about trying again, I have a recipe for you. I didn't win first with it, someone else did, but I have their permission. It was a law school chili-cook-off. And, seeing as I am one, I can say with confidence that you will not find a bigger bunch of critical people for judges than lawyers. They will give you their opinion whether it hurts your feelings or not! This recipe is a sure thing. :o)

First of all, Colin is biased. He's sweet, but misguided, and might be...shall we say...under the influence of all the terrific love you give him. Second, I shall be your real friend, and tell you that although you meant well, ...you were not true to your self. That self being your true blue-blooded "remember the Alamo" Texan self. Beans? Hello, I thought (under some misguided heading in Silver Palate cookbook) it was called a bowl of "red"? How does black fit in? Yes, I know we are called to be witnesses in the place He has planted us, but..when it comes to chili, settling for third? You might as well have picked up a jar or two and a seasoning packet from Williams-Sonoma. Knowing the fact you were in Atlanta, they would not have known the difference. No offense, but it would be like a Texan trying to judge a Peach Cobbler. Lets get real. Disavow your recent chili expense and try making some good old fashioned corn bread instead. Find one of Edna Lewis's recipes (the Grande Dame of Southern Cooking) and show them what you're really made of. From one cook to another, this is why it's called "Regional Cooking". Still love you-

This reminds me of when I was a kid and we'd play monopoly. I'd get that card that said "you were second runner-up in a beauty contest" and my brothers would snicker "and there were only 3 people in it".

You just press on and get the prize, sista.

I don't think I could ever eat chili in August...

However, I am sure you made one mean chili and it probably deserves 1st place.

How would you feel if you won bronze in the olympics?

Hilarious!

I am praying about that obsession of yours...:) (I can't wait to reap the benifits of that obsession!)

Melissa,

I would say that you are too funny, but I agree with you and third place is no joke (unless it involves my children, then it is the best thing in the world, but I can't even fool them).

Now, I don't want to be startin' no chili fight on the blog. I know that chili is intimate, especially during football (Mountaineer) season, but I have always put kidney beans in mine. I started out with two cans of light and two cans of dark and now I just do light. It went against my OCD when it comes to cooking, but I did not like the texture of the dark ones. I liked the light ones better, so I talked myself into just using the light beans. I guess it is different in different parts below the Mason-Dixon line. In WV, we like our beans (and cornbread).

On another note, I think that chili cook-offs are a conspiracy for men to think that they are better cooks. I just don't get it. You want to talk about injustice? The men have a breakfast once a month at our church back home (we have not found one here yet). Anyway, they had a chili cook-off and I was so jealous because I wanted to do it and win! I tried to get my husband to do it because I wanted to stand over him and basically cook it for him and win that way. He would rather have a root canal then cook or watch a chic flick. He just would not budge. After the guy in our S.S. class won, I tried to get him and then his wife to tell me what he put in it. He said he did not know, yeah right. Then she said he just kept dumping stuff in it.

Oh well, I guess men need to feel like they can cook too and the men in my family (excluding my hubby) can. However, I do notice that men always seem to win chili cook-offs. If I come up with any amazing chili recipe (w/o kidney beans), I'll pass it along. I'm sorry about the tangent. I guess this issue made me think about my issues with chili cook-offs and third place (smile).

I'm glad you used the blog to vent about this and get the moral support you need right now. Oh and where does a person get some real sweet tea around here(Houston or the greater Houston area)? I've been to several restaurants that say they don't serve it!!!! What? The little sugar packets are supposed to suffice? Oh and I won't touch Splenda with a ten foot pole, any kind of artificial sweetner gives me migraines (no joke). I would just as soon drink water. I have been in shock. It is happening everywhere though. We went to Church Hill Downs and they did not have any..I about fell out of my chair. Last weekend I went to Saltgrass and I like the restaurant, but the tea was not sweet enough. I know there are amazing little places that I just don't know about yet. I need the inside scoop. I am truly a loner in this big state.

This reminds me of the time my friend entered a chili cookoff at her work. Everyone there had "special" recipes and "secret ingredients." They worked to perfect their recipes for days before the event. My friend, who is not a cook, decided to enter only because her peers were pressuring her. She went to our local grocery store and bought some ground beef, a few cans of beans and some canned tomatoes....threw them in a crockpot the morning of the contest and to her amazement, SHE WON!! Everybody wanted to know what her special recipe was. Sometimes simple is the best.

You are so funny. I LOVE Chili cook offs!!! Our church has one every year during our fall festival and if you win you get a ribbon and an apron along with other goodies. The apron is like a trophy, as it is passed down from year to year. One man has won the thing 3 years in a row and most of the time he is the one to beat. Be glad you placed, girl. For years and years and years I never even got that far. That is until last year. My hubby found a recipe on line and said this was the winner. I made it and won 2nd place. I started screaming and hollering like a 12-year-old!!!! BTW, chili is actually what we are having tonight for dinner.

I know you hate 3rd place but Congrats anyway. I agree with Colin, that you have to go with whichever crock pot is the empty one!! Listen to the people -after all isn't this is a democracy?

Don't worry about acting like a 12-year-old. My hubby and I have been married for 12 years and still act like a bunch of 12 year olds:) We are both very competitive and hate to lose!!!!

When you say 3rd place it makes me think of these birth order books by Kevin Lehman that I gave to each of my 3 children. In the middle child book the middle-child bear says, "1st is the worst, 2nd is the best, 3rd is the nerd with the hairiest chest." My middle child goes around reciting this very often and it makes this mama smile b/c it is so funny to me. Aren't you the 2nd child in your family?

Thanks for sharing. You are very funny and put a big smile on my face. Have a wonderful day!

Melissa - you cracked me up. I'm suspicious about those judges though - unless they are from TX, they have NO BUSINESS judging a chili cook-off.

So what color is the ribbon....??? Let me guess, you won't be hanging it in a shadow box in your kitchen.... he he he

Hi Melissa,
You have my sympathy! Having the judges choose two men over your chili recipe! I'm sure Colin was right and it was rigged! ha

I am planning to make "Beth's Texas Sheet Cake" tomorrow to take to a reunion of my old youth choir! This is our first reunion. We sang together and went on choir tours to TX, AL, FL, GA, and even OH. That was going on FORTY years ago! I have been worried about what to wear, how to fix my hair, etc. until yesterday when a co=worker told me.."Well, they're all going to be OLD folks...don't worry about it!" ha ha And, I guess she's right! We are all pretty old now. I hope we have fun. I REALLY hope the cake turns out good. I'll let you know.

God bless you,

Melissa, you are too funny. I laughed so hard at your story because it brought to my mind the year my then little girl placed 3rd in a horse show. I was so proud of her and you would have thought she was dead last. She said "3rd place" was the worst, there was nothing redeeming about it, she might as well have not even ridden, she was so embarrassed, and on and on it went! I e-mailed her and told her she had to take a trip over to your blog and read about your chili escapade because I knew she could relate! She's feeling a little, no a lot, blue these days due to a couple of losses in her life and while I can't say your post really cheered her, she said she certainly recognized the resemblance! Said she's recotnized it before in the things you've posted! Anyway, I'm rambling, I'm sorry, but I'd like to add my request to the others for your recipe. I am sure it is scrumptious!

Ode To Melissa
When the ultimate goal
Is wanting the win,
Just placing third
Seems at first like a sin.

However, when days have passed
And clear vision's restored,
First place ribbons
Shine forth from the Lord.

Hundreds of women
Recipe eyes on the rove,
Want that 3rd place recipe
To try on THEIR stoves.

For a crock pot empty
Within minutes of trying
By scores of taste testers
Shows chili that's satisfying.

And how many husbands
So love their mates
Messaging over and again
Reminding them they're 1st rate.

Lastly, such an amazing family,
Sister, father, and mother,
Makes you a 1st place winner
More than any other!

- I hope you are smiling by now and feeling better about your loss. Lots of us really would like that recipe. Have a happy day!

You just never know what the judges want. Every Labor Day weekend the local unions get together and have a BBQ cookoff. My husband enters his chicken in the special category, and never even places. I don't see how that is possible. It is fabulous. The BBQ that his local union turn in is also awesome, but never places. At least it seems you are on the right path to making hte judges happy.
