A Frivolous Friday

Happy Friday, Dear Siestas!

So, I need your help.  I just ran out of perfume and I am on the prowl for a fabulous new scent. Do you have a perfume you swear by?  I am a serious perfume junkie.

I started out stealing Amanda's Love's Baby Soft as a young child.  It was the first perfume I remember feeling pretty in.

Then in Middle School I moved on to things like Sun-Ripened Raspberry and Juniper Breeze from Bath & Body Works.  I honestly don't know how the boys could stand to be around us because my friends and I would spray a fourth of a bottle of this stuff all over our bodies even during class change.

(It is totally annoying me that the Juniper Breeze picture is so much bigger than the Sun-Ripened Raspberry picture.  I'm getting serious OCD right now.  But, alas, I don't have time to deal with it because it's Friday! And P.S. I used these two scents about ten bottle designs ago. Every time they change the bottle design I feel a generation older.)

In High School I rebelliously snuck into the controversial Abercrombie & Fitch store against my parents wishes and bought Abercrombie 8.  The managers at that store feared their demise and often abandoned their cash registers when they saw my Mom's big blond hair and corresponding Bible approaching so my best guess is that she had dropped me off at the Mall that particular day.  Since I am older and wiser, I will not at this point discuss how passionately I loved Abercrombie 8.

In college, I stopped going to Abercrombie & Fitch (a combination of sanctification and the fact that I could no longer fit into their teeny and tiny clothing) and started wearing Angel.  I still love this scent but I have since come to think that it is a bit frilly for me.  The great thing about Angel is that it lasts the entire day.  Miraculous.

This past Christmas I was given both Marc Jacobs and Lolita Lempicka and so I have gone back and forth between these two scents for the past seven months.  I love them both and they are totally different.  When I feel girly, I wear Lolita Lempicka and when I feel sophisticated, I wear Marc Jacobs.

Problem is that I am out of both of them.  I feel that my personality has been sucked right out of me.  Not to mention, everyone must think I stink.  I know, you're asking, "How in the world did you manage to use both bottles in a short period of seven months?"  Please do not get hostile toward me, for I already admitted that I am a total junkie.  But I'm at peace with it.

Please help!

And, I almost forgot, have a fantastic Friday!

You are loved.

I love 'Spring Fever' by Origins.

Fresh and light floral scent. There's also a slight dewy smell to it too, much like the fragrance of spring.

"Heavenly" by Victoria's Secret....it smells Heavenly :)

The first time I smelled Stella on a woman, I nearly attacked her to ask what it was. At the time, it was brand new and only sold in NYC for whatever reason. Conveniently, I had planned a trip there weeks before and I was able to grab some. Now it is sold everywhere. I love it, my husband loves it, and people are always asking what it is.

My husband has allergies and I can't wear any scents, not even lotions... so if someone could splash a little Chanel No.5 on and walk close to me, I'd be in heaven!

'Shi' by Alfred Sung is another good one. :)

okay- i call this my "old lady" perfume, simply because i feel like i'm about 20 years younger than the women in the store when i go, but it is seriously THE BEST perfume...ever. i'm not wearing it right now because i'm nursing and oh i miss it so. totally not frilly or girly at all...

it's Brighton - laugh. mmmmm

Hey there Melissa
I am much older than you but I still like to have perfumes that make me smell and feel oh so young. Love your honesty about A&F. Personally I just love PINK from Victoria's Secret. MY twin daughters (21) also sneak into my perfume and love it. It does seem to last all day. Everyone thinks that I smell oh sooo good. HOpe this helps. I feel your pain though it is hard to find a great perfume which can smell good on you as it does someone else. I too started out with Baby's LOve Soft. That can certainly tell my age.
Great hunting.

Chanel's Coco Mademoiselle....It is the only perfume that people have commented on hours after I apply it. My 21 year old daughter borrowed it so much that I bought her a bottle of her own!

Bobby Brown Bath is a really nice scent, especially in the warmer months. Cabotine and Parfum de ta are my two all time favorites! I'm 33 and have worn both of these perfumes off and on since college! Hope you find something you love!

haha! Love it. I stole my older sister's "baby soft" and then I went on to a b&bw scent (pear glacé). Then it was Coolwaters, which I now can't stand. My old standby (and husband's fav) is "Journey" by Mary Kay (very fresh smelling). And I also love to steal my mom's when I'm visiting her and would love my own bottle of Vera Wang Princess (it has dark chocolate undertones with a bit of freshness).

You are HILarious! I love the perfume bottle pictures...talk about feeling old...I would have NO idea how to even do that :-)

I like the new Gap Body scent called Close. I also love the Crabtree body sprays/oil (Summer Hill in particular) for just a hint of scent.

Good luck,

Ralph Lauren Romance; I have worn it for years and still love it!

Anonymous said...

Rapture made by Victoria Secret is my standby. But I also like Super Model, Very Sexy and the other perfumes by Victoria Secret mentioned here by bloggers. (For Christmas I got about eight 1 oz. bottles of the different scents they carry. It was a great way to try the different ones without feeling like you had to use a whole big bottle of it if you hated it.)
I also like CK1 made by Calvin Klien for those times that I want to feel beautiful, but not too frilly. My husband has some and I'll sneak his. Don't freak out CK1 is made for men and women. I guess there is a CK2 made just for women.
Happy Friday, Erika

Melissa,
I am a perfume junkie as well, but the problem is that as I have gotten older my taste has gotten more expensive. The classic- Channel's Coco Mademoiselle, my favorite is by Creed Clear Mountain Water-you can only get it at Neiman Marcus or a boutique. It is fabulous and people stop me to ask what I am wearing. Also, if you are an Angel fan you can graduate to his newest which is called Alien. It too is fabulous.

LOL! I am feeling your pain! My family is in route from Texas to Colorado for vacation. I discovered as I was packing last night that I was totally out of Chanel Chance - one of my all-time favorites. I was completely stressing out, and I seriously contemplated yet another mad dash to the mall to rescue myself. I, like you, can't stand a day without perfume. So glad I'm getting all these great recommendations. I think it's divine intervention. Must be time to try something new!

Ah. Love's Baby Soft. I remember that. My mom bought it for me when she bought her Jean Nate. WOW! I'm old!

Past favorites have included Rapture by Victoria's Secret, Beautiful by Estee Lauder, and several others you could buy at Wal-Mart. (I was in college; money was tight.)

Anyway, right now, I use Bath & Body Works Magnolia Blossom, which they have discontinued, during the week. I have a HUGE stockpile of it. I use Victoria's Secret Heavenly during the weekend when I'm with my hubby.

After reading some of your posts, I feel so cheap...

Melissa, I just can't wear perfume anymore. When I was young, I did just like you, and sprayed it all over me. I must have stunk something awful! When my babies came along, I stopped wearing perfume because I could tell it bothered them (and I didn't even spray it all over me then ... one little squirt). Now, maybe thanks to my allergies and just not being used to wearing it, I can NOT breathe with it on me. I suffocate. I can handle Bath & Body Works though! When we went to Nebraska recently, there was Coconut Lime Verbena in our hotel ... I liked it and have been wearing the lotion since. The girls love the smell, too. And it's inexpensive!

By the way, I used to always hear that men like the smell of "vanilla." Go figure!!

I had my little Love's Baby Soft, too ... had to get it for my girls this last Christmas ... their first perfume! Katelyn sprayed half her bottle the first day on everything but her, and Karalee never wears hers. They are sweet reminders of MY childhood though, and look sweet sitting in the cabinet.

I was absolutely no help to you ... just had to give my two cents!

Love you girl!

I favor lighter scents, at least, I think I do. BTW,in high school I used to douse myself liberally in Obsession by Calvin Klein..I smelled so cloyingly sweet I was like a candy factory!! YECH!

The perfume I love the most right now is Princess by Vera Wang! It is subtle, has a little floral undertones with a touch of Chocolate mixed in...I t fabulous!! It is very special to me as I was shopping for a new perfume after my husband passed away because I couldn't bear to wear the one he always got me, Angel. And when I found Princess, I knew it was mine, because he always called me His Princess. I was his Princess and I am God's Princess, so I knew this was a wonderful kiss from the Lord for my grieving heart! He's been gone 2 1/2 years now and I am still wearing it and always get comments on how wonderful my fragrance is!

Ha! We must be right around the same age! Love's Baby Soft and Sun Ripened Raspberry were my choices, as well! I can smell them now! My stepmom forbid me to use the scented lotion because she couldn't stand the smell! In 9th grade I discovered Clinique Happy and I have been using it for the past decade. Isn't that terrible? I love it so! My husband bought me Sea Island Cotton from Bath and Body Works - that's his favorite so I wear it on special occassions. Funny how different our noses are, though! Some perfumes I can't STAND!

Two by Philosophy that I love are Amazing Grace -- it smells like summer, even has a hint of Coppertone. Coppertone spf4 is my all time favorite fragrance ---if they'd just make THAT into a spray fragrance - mmmmm. Also by Philosophy is Unconditional Love -- it's just plain yummy.

Another bit heavier fragrance that I wear -- more in fall/winter than summer --- is Turquoise by Ralph Lauren. His fragrances always have many layers that continue on through the day. Good stuff !

This was fun! I love reading everyone's favorites.

The Sephora store in our city has a kind of "fragrance matcher" computer kiosk. You type in a fragrance you like and it suggests others that are similar. That's how I found Lovely by Sarah Jessica Parker, which I love, love, love - but skimp on - because it's a long time 'til Christmas or my birthday! Someone else already said it, check out Sephora!

Melissa, I too went through the Love's Baby Soft and Sun-Ripened Raspberry stages; they must be part of some girly rite of passage! :)

Now that I am a bit (ahem) older, Jill Sander No. 4 is my signature fragrance.

The Avon I wear is called Haiku, very fresh and Rare Gold, very sweet and sophisticated. Shalom

Like Rooney, I have so many friends who are allergic to most perfumes OR they set off a migraine for them that I generally don't wear scents anymore.

I do like lotions like Fresh Pineapple from Bath and Body Works! It smells like the beach to me...and is the closest I'm going to get to a beach for quite awhile!

I like the women's scents at Hollister.

Melissa, like yourself I am a total perfume junkie. If you want one that stays on all day, DEFINITELY try Euphoria by Calvin Klein.

Light Blue by Dolce and Gabbana is another favorite.

Aeropostale: "Promise" (love it and not too pricey)

Bobby Brown: I love "Bath" and also "Beach"

Victoria's Secret: "Very Sexy Hot" (goes on kinda strong but quickly tames to a lovely smell. Added Bonus!!- When other ladies ask me what I'm wearing I get to say the name and it makes me feel good about myself :O) tee hee

My mom never wore perfume that I know of, when I was in first grade (fourtythree years ago) a little girl in my class stood in front of me in the lunch line, smelling of something wonderful. I told my mom and she said it was cologne, I promised myself I would always wear cologne and so would my children when I got old enough. Well, I do , they do, and so do my grandsons, sometimes when she is shopping for cologne AGAIN my daughter in law thinks I am sure that I created a monster!! I have worn so many, I love the inexpensive Avon, I buy from a dear friend to the more expensive I love Estee Lauder Knowing and Oscar (Also showing my age). Makes me feel pretty and I know that it helps win favor, I really think the sense of smell is a powerful one. I wonder if my girls every snuck into Abercrombie? Shalom

I love Shi by Alfred Sung. I've worn it for about 8 years. Sometimes I try to switch and try something new but I always go back to Shi. I get lots of compliments. Buy it online. It's much cheaper. Let us know what you pick.

I stumbled upon "Viva La Juicy" by Juicy this past February and LOVE it!! I would normally not wear something that is named "juciy" :), but this smells really good and I've gotten lots of compliments on it.

A couple of years ago, my mom and I took a trip to Dillard's and went on a perfume-finding mission. We spent a while smelling lots of different types of perfumes. I finally settled on Light Blue by Dolce and Gabbana. Try it!

Coco by Chanel and Black Cashmere by Donna Karan. Love both of these but the Coco is my favorite. It just makes me feel good when I smell it. Good luck choosing a scent from all these wonderful suggestions. Looks like you have your work cut out for you!

Escada has a new spring perfume every year to coordinate with one of their clothing collections. They can be a little pricey, but they last. I also like their perfume called Magnetism, but it's heavier so I think of it as more of a winter scent.

Ok, don't laugh, but I cannot tell you how fun these scents are. I got this "Celestial shower gel" as a birthday gift last year that's supposed to be based on the scents most conducive to your astrological sign. I KNOW it is ridiculous and at the time I just laughed at it, but I can't tell you how much when I would use that people would compliment how good it smelled on me! So now, even though I still think its all total phooey, I am hooked and also have bought the body spray- it disappears into me when I put it on, can't explain it! I have also now bought it as stocking stuffers for friends who have also fallen in love with their particular scents too. If you want to check it out (or scoff at it) you can find it here at The Soap Opera- http://www.thesoapopera.com/cgi-bin/scart.cgi/STH-BSP.php3?scartid=6003359.

Enjoy!

My all time favorite is "Il Bacio" it means "the kiss" it's a great scent that men love for some reason. It's just VERY hard to find...it used to be carried by all the big stores but now I can usually only find it in a perfume kiosk. When I run across it I usually buy 2 or 3 bottles...it smells that good!
Another summer scent I just ran across in some samples I had the other day was Ann Taylor's "Promise" it's a wonderful summer scent!

So thrilled to recommend:
Max Mara - made with sugar a little sweet but a beautiful fragrance

Heavenly (Victoria Secret)
Our youth associate director wears this and she smells so fresh and clean. My next purchase!

Nude(Bill Blass - have to find online) This is one of my favorites. You will love, love, love this one!

Bath (Bobbi Brown) Awesome! Fresh clean obviously hence the name. Can totally live life with this one!

Happy perfuming!

Light Blue by Dolce & Gabanna, fabulous and light and lasts all day... and I'm actually out of this one so I might hit the mall tonight!

I vote with the folks who love Clinique Happy. Very clean and light. My all-time favorite discontinued perfume (don't you hate that?) was Sunscape from Bath and Body. It dates me, I know, but I wore it when I was dating my husband 15 years ago, and it was always his favorite!

Leslie said...

Well, last summer I bought some Philosophy Amazing Grace and Pure Grace on a QVC Today's Special Value.....don't even turn on the TV just bypass it and pick it up online or at a store or you'll have a whole new addiction. I love the fragrance, but the mind-blowing thing to me is that at least once per day - someone will say how great I smell - I'm 46 this has never happened in my life - really, every day somebody - and not necessarily someone new, just a random co-worker, or my husband or my kids will just be talking and say - you smell so good. They are both very clean scents and I use the body lotion, but they have perfume and cologne available - happy shopping/sniffing!

Hi Melissa I love the story I can picture your mother in A&F it cracks me up. I'm not much of a perfume wearer, and whenever I go into a store I have to run through the fragrance section or I'll go into asthmatic distress. The other day however I was in Macys and a lady walked by me and her perfume was beautiful. It smelled so good I had to stop and ask her what she was wearing. I make the 9th person to mention this particular fragrance. She was wearing
Light Blue by Dolce and Gabbana

I may actually buy some it was that nice and I never buy perfume

Have a great weekend

Well, I love perfume; but am allergic to it. I can only put a small amount on my clothing every so often. It stinks, I know, but what can you do. However, I do have a couple that I love. Still by Jennifer Lopez and Blue by Ralph Lauren. Both are different, and I like that. Have fun shopping.

I've been loyal to Chanel "Allure" or years. Every time I go into a dept. store now, however, I feel like I'm cheating on it 'cause I gravitate to the fragrance counter to inhale Vera Wang "Princess."

I might just have to do the Princess thing when my Allure runs out.

I do not smell most oders, perfumes, colognes, candles, food, ect. However, I do smell chocoalte.. PRAISE THE LORD!!
I guess you could say I have selective smelling. ha-ha-ha-
that's funny! I have smelt those things, and do at times, but it is rare.
My son not knowing I had this challange, years ago bought me
Exclamation. It is a lovely sent...so they tell me. It comes in a perfume, and a powder. My husband loves, it...
Since I cannot smell most sents, I have a fear of over doing it when I put it on. So I use it lightly.

Hey Melissa, try it you'll like it.

Oh Melissa...this is a fun post! Something all of us girls can relate to.
My first perfume was one called Exclamation and it had an exclamation mark for the cap. Then in junior high I got my first "real" perfume called Annise (soft floral scent). In high school I wore Eternity all 4 years and got a little into the B&BW sprays (my scent was cucumber melon or pearberry).
Now my favorite is Prada Amber (more wintery scent). I am currently wearing the Vera Wang classic. I like it!
Can't wait to hear what you end up with :)

Isn't it fun being a girl? - I love it! My favourite fragrance is Tommy Girl. I keep going back to it. However, I am curious to try Light Blue by Dolce & Gabanna. Hmmm, I just got a new puppy and we named her "Dolce"... for us Dolce was a piano term and the name of a great Starbucks drink (Cinnamon Dolce Latte)... and then I discovered the designer - who knew?! - may be a sign :)

I had the same reaction as your mom to Ambercrombie ... I had to leave the store and much to my girl's horror they had to hear me talk about "I cannot believe how they make it all about sensuality ... what are they teaching - talk about Babylonian culture" all the way out of the store and down the mall. Yep, they don't want to go to the Mall with me... lol - actually they agree.

Love you! We really need a Siesta shopping trip, 'girlfriends'.

Love Bath & Body Works, but I've never been a perfume junkie, so I'm no help. I always enjoy a vanilla scent, so that'll tell you how flamboyant I am.

I will say that Beth Moore in Abercrombie & Fitch might not be a thing to miss, though perhaps it might be better to watch from a distance. ;-)

The perfume I get the most compliments over is Calvin Klein's Euphoria. I've run out and didn't want to spend a lot of money, so my summer scent (which I absolutely love) is Butterfly Flower from Bath and Body Works. Also like Black Amethyst with them, too.

I now wear Tryst from the Lady Primrose line. I have only seen it at little boutiques that sell the fancy lotions, perfumes, powders, etc. I buy mine at Hauerlands which is a boutique in Katy on Mason Rd. Love the place. Anyway, I get compliments all the time and am often asked what I am wearing! It's a really fresh scent and I love it! And, I love that it's not a usual one that everyone would know about. I just turned 35 and I feel that it fits this time in my life! I associate all my "past perfumes" with certain times in my life. Plumeria from Bath and Body Works reminds me of college everytime I smell it. Do you think men do this? HA!

I'm just a bit younger than your mom. So yes, Love's Baby Soft. But do you all remember Sweet Honesty by Avon? Ahh, 7th grade...
My husband and I have very different 'noses'. We actually have to go scent shopping together. That way he doesn't spend big $$$ on something I can't stand. Goes both ways.
I like something light and fresh. Have worn Gap Dream and CK, but I am also shopping for a new one. LOTS of great suggestions here.
Thanks, Melissa.

Believe it or not right now I love Jessica Simpson's Fancy perfume. I don't care for her particularly, but she named her perfume "Fancy" because that is what her grandfather used to call her as a girl. I liked that. And I've gotten huge compliments on this perfume- it is girly and natural all in one- that's me and maybe you too Melissa- if not, Ralph Lauren "Rocks" is another one I've worn in the last year. Good Hunting, perfumes are fun!

Melissa - I am a bonafied perfume fiend!! I have way too many bottles for it to be considered right. Ok, so I love and have the marc jacobs!! I am going to recommend that you try "Light Blue" by Dolce and Gabanna, "Michael" by Michael Kors, "Princess" by Vera Wang (this reminds me of Abercromie 8 which I too loved)and Dolce and Gabanna "The One" for Women. Ok, I think my posts screams "I've got a problem"!! Ha, enjoy!!

Okay, this is a great scent and it's one that not a lot of people have heard of either but I've always gotten compliments on it. And don't let the name of it bother you, but it's called Nude by Bill Blass. Yes, I know that Bill Blass is for a different generation but it is great scent! And it's so much cheaper than a lot of the popular names out there.

My perfume-y ways began in much the same way--Love's Baby Soft (my sister was stealing mine though) and BBW Sun-Ripened Raspberry. Now, though, my all time favorite is Chanel Chance. A few years ago, I would sit and sniff the little sampler bottle from Sephora and carry on about how wonderful it was. At the time, I was a broke college senior, and someone took pity on me and bought me my own full bottle. We've been together ever since :) (When we aren't together, I mix in So Pink! from the GAP, Banana Republic W, and Mary Kay Velocity)

Hi Melissa,

loved your post today; my first computer task each day is to check the LPM BLOG. I thoroughly enjoyed it, and laughed as well. Personally, I love Estee Lauders "pleasures", but it can be strong at times. However, I also keep a few bottles of Victoria Secret's "Heavenly" on hand. The body mist is really light, but the perfume is great and lasts a bit longer. It's a great scent that is not too overpowering.I also have the powder and body lotion. Layering works well.
