World Autism Awareness Day

Dear Siestas,
Last week one of you alerted us to the fact that this special day was quickly approaching. Our minds immediately turned to a dear friend of Living Proof Ministries whose family has been touched by autism. This story is not about recommendations for treatments or medications. It’s a story about a miracle and we hope so much it will bless you today.
Love,
Beth

Today, April 2, is World Autism Awareness Day. This is an unusual day to celebrate, but this is a day my family can rejoice in. I have a wonderful 18-year-old son who has autism and is blessed by God.

When my baby boy was born he was the most unusual baby I had ever seen. He had a cone-shaped head, ears rolled up like a newspaper, a big bruise on his face from the forceps, and he was blue and wrinkly. And he broke my tailbone! But he was just what my husband and I ordered—a baby. We had lost our last two babies in miscarriages. Our son was perfect in our eyes and we felt he could do no wrong

As our baby grew, he did things a little differently—like crawling backwards, for example. He spoke languages unheard of and thought the rest of us understood. He seemed to go off into his own world a lot. At times he seemed not to see or hear, but other times it seemed like he could. By the time he was two, I still had not heard the word “mama.” I was pregnant with his little sister and had extreme morning sickness that lasted the entire pregnancy. We had his hearing and vision tested and everything was normal. Finally, my mother talked us into taking him to the local school district for testing. So my very pregnant self, my husband, and our son went to the testing center. I watched as my two-and-half-year-old baby boy was taken by some sweet ladies to be evaluated. After two-and-half hours, our son was returned to us and we were told we would get the results in a couple of weeks. What! I have to wait longer?

Over the next two weeks we determined that he was fine. He simply learned at his own pace. We just needed to work with him more and everything would be fine. I hate denial!

We went to the meeting with the school district and were bombarded with words we weren’t familiar with. Once we heard the phrase “autistic symptoms,” we never heard another word. We had no clue where to turn or what to do. We were given a mountain of papers to review and read. None of them was in everyday English and they told us to call if we had any questions. What I needed was a translator!

I sent the reports to our wonderful pediatrician and asked what it all meant. A few days later I met with her and she explained that our son had many symptoms of autism. However, the education and medical communities did not like to label children that young. I asked what we should do or where we should go. She suggested that I look at local schools for special children or at the school district’s program. So I began researching everything I could in-between bouts of nausea. (Remember, this was before the internet was in every home.)

I became very angry with God. I could not believe He would allow this to happen to my child. I told God to leave us alone if this was the best He could do. But Jesus never left our side.

Based on what we could afford and what the school district offered, we decided to enroll him in the district’s Preschool for Special Needs when he turned three. Little did I know what a blessing this would be.

Mrs. Trainer was my son’s teacher for three years and Ms. Donna was her faithful assistant. His first class only had 4 students. With the specialists who frequented the classroom, it was often a one-to-one ratio. Mrs. Trainer and Ms. Donna worked with the students and the parents. She taught us how to teach our children, helped us keep dairies of our son’s progress, and encouraged us through hard times. They were sent to us by God, I believe.

Our son did not make much progress at first and it was very frustrating. We began sign language and flash cards to try to develop his language, only to become more frustrated. He was now four years old and had echolalia, which means he repeated everything we said. It was like living with a parrot that mimicked everything he heard. He was not potty trained. And he never called me mommy except when I said it first.

Then God blessed us again. Our son got the worst stomach virus you could ever imagine! It lasted a week and I will spare you the details. Let’s just say I had no furniture or any clothes that weren’t permanently marked. He was given a medication to stop the vomiting and it worked after a week, but little did I know what was about to happen.

We had enrolled our son in a Stay and Play program at a local church so he would be around “normal children.” The week after the virus, his Stay and Play teacher stopped by our house to ask me what medication we had put him on. I told her we had not put him on any medication. She said that he sat during story time! And followed instructions! I drove her crazy asking every detail. I began to watch and pay attention over the next couple of days and I did see improvement.

I called the neurologist and asked what could have caused the changes. He wasn’t sure, but he told me about a medication similar to the anti-nausea medication that we might want to consider. Unfortunately, he said it had long term side effects. I hate these types of decisions. We tried the medication and our son began to communicate at first in sign, and then verbally. He became potty trained! And all those flash cards I used for years? He knew those words and how to use them! He made great progress between four and five. God helped us find what we needed through a virus. Only God could turn something so bad into good. Amen?

(While the use of medication was a turning point in our son’s story, we believe his progress came from a combination of many things. There is certainly no magic pill to cure autism. Using medication is a personal choice and one that does not work for many autistic children. The side effects can often outweigh the results.)

Our son started going to kindergarten part-time at age five. He was our district’s first all-day-kindergartner the next year. Yes, he went through kindergarten three times—and twice in the same year. He progressed with teachers hand-picked by God and me for the next six years. Don’t get me wrong, I was still mad at God. But God never left my side. How else would I have known what to do?

When the school district told me he would not be able to do this or that, we would just work on it at home or during the summer. We always had tutors and worksheets and projects outside of school. We worked on social issues and developed friendships. My husband and I worked non-stop and our son worked very hard. He always proved everyone wrong. He would exceed what was expected. He had teachers who encouraged him and friends who supported him, but mostly he had a God who loved and watched over him.

When our son was nine, my mother talked me into letting him attend Vacation Bible School at her church. She promised me she would be in the room next to his and would hand-pick the teacher. So, I let him go against my better judgment. God was so sweet to put him in a class with his best friend from school. By the end of that week, his friend and the VBS had taught him all about Jesus. So on a Friday night in June, 2000, my son asked Jesus into his heart on his bunk bed. Then he asked if we could go to church on Sunday. I said we would see. My husband wanted to know what all of this was about. I said, “Don’t worry, he will forget about it by tomorrow.” On Sunday morning, early in the morning, my son insisted and insisted and insisted we go to my parents’ church so he could walk the aisle and make his profession of faith. We went (again, against my better judgment) and at the end of the service my son pulled—and I do mean pulled—me down the aisle. That day my husband was saved as well. I was so angry at God for coming back into my home, I was crying. Everyone thought I was crying for joy. No, I wanted nothing to do with this! I was mad!

We went home and my husband asked what we should do now. And I told him either we do it all the way or not at all. So we began doing it all the way the best way we knew how and I worked through my anger with God.

The way Jesus worked his way back into our home was so sweet. We still had hard times and many joyful times as well. But God never left our side. This year my son will graduate from high school and attend college in the fall. We consider him completely healed by God and believe God has a glorious plan for the rest of his life. We cannot wait for it to unfold. We believe God has a perfect plan for each person He created. I pray that you will seek out the path God has for you and follow Jesus no matter where it leads, because sometimes what seems like a bad thing might be a blessing in disguise.

I ask that you lift up prayers today for all families that have children with special needs, but please say a little extra prayer for those with autism. May God bless you.

Siestas, we would love to fill up our comments with prayers for these families today. Our friend has a very tender heart for the mothers who may read this who have worked so hard, remained faithful to God, and have seen little or no progress from their autistic children. She shared with me her heartache for these parents who have such a difficult life. Please help us encourage these sisters with your prayers. Thank you ladies!

You are in complete control and I pray that You will give each mother wisdom, comfort, and peace. Wrap them in Your big, loving, awesome arms and I pray they will just feel Your love! Please bless each family that has a precious child with autism and show us how we can be a blessing to them. You are such an amazing God and nothing takes you by surprise. Bless you for this wonderful post! My daughter just turned 11 and is somewhere on the autism spectrum. Our early experiences were much like the original posters...no communication and I didn't hear "Mommy" until my daughter was over 4. Oh, she is a joy. God has sent us good teachers and loving adults and even in the challenging times I would not change my precious, perfect girl for anything.

I do not have an autistic child but I do pray for all of those parents who are struggling with this. I pray that you all put those precious children in God's hands. He will handle it. Our God is a good God all the time even if we don't always see it.

Lord Jesus, I simply want to give you glory for who you are and the plan you have for all of us. I ask this morning that you would annoint every mother who reads this blog who has a special needs child with a fresh revelation of your plan for her and her family. I ask that you would give her new understanding and insight from your word that would guide her on a day to day basis. I ask that you would blow her concept of who you are and what you can do for her and her family by revealing yourself to her in many small ways!

Jesus - you are awesome and amazing, and Lord I know that you are the solution to every problem, and I ask that you would show yourself strong in every moment of these Mothers' lives!

Lord, I thank you for the testimony of this sweet lady. Thank you for her vulnerability and encouragement to others. I’m single, never married, no children and I feel encouraged by her words. Thank You for using others to be a witness of Your love for us. For those out there with loved ones that are affected by autism and other special needs, I pray for Your blessings in their lives. Have them be strengthened by You (Phil 4:13) and feel Your love for them in a very real way. While things don’t always turn out the way we plan or desire, You always have our best in mind (Rom 8:28). You love us with an everlasting love (Jer 31:3). I pray all these things in the mighty name of Jesus. Amen.

My prayer would simply be Lord, please give each parent the physical strength to make it through each day.

Lord, Your word says:
"30 Even youths grow tired and weary, and young men stumble and fall;

31 but those who hope in the LORD
will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint."

Thank you for everyone you used in their lives to help them in this process. Please be with all families effected by autism today! Give them hope and direction. Give them patience and wisdom! And please God, give them joy! I lift up every family who is struggling with autism. I pray that You would be a source of strength and hope. I pray that these families would run to you as refuge and that when all seems hopeless, they will find hope in Your Word and through Your Spirit. I especially lift up the Hernandez's who recently learned of their son's autism and that they would constantly seek You and Your healing Hand!
To You be Praise and Glory because You are sooo Worthy!

I pray for Stephen and his parents today. He is 17 and God has not written his story with the positives in this one but Stephen and his parents BELIEVE God is in charge and that there is a reason for all that has happened and all that will happen. Father, bless Stephen, Kyle, DeLise and Jim today and every day.

Father,
I praise You for these faithful and enduring parents. Love is so easy when all is well, so easy when easily reciprocated... Father thank you for parents willing to love like you do! Lord I ask that you step into that child's heart today and bless these moms and dads with something they have needed/wanted to see or hear. Give them peace and long suffering and please bless them with your quiet peace today.

Father, You have woven every one of us together in perfection and You have created us for Your glory. I pray that each Mom and every child will recognize that they indeed have been called. No calling is easy Father, and they all cost us something. I pray when the cost seems too high that You would give them peace and rest. Peace in knowing that You do walk each step of the way with them and the Rest, of casting their cares on You, and allowing their friends and loved ones bear their burdens with them. Father, thank you for these precious ones, thank you for their humility, for their tenacity. I pray for their medical needs to be met, for insurance to be cleared in any way that it is being blocked. I pray for our local governments to recognize their needs and to make a way for them to be covered thoroughly. Please make their rough road as straight as possible and above all, show them Yourself so that they might have hope.

Thank you for this story. My son is 10 years old, and we have had many of the same experiences as this family. However, Christian has not progressed as far as some children with Autism. Even still he is one of my greatest blessings. God has used Christian to bring me to my knees in prayer, and praise God even in the tough times. God has given us the gift of laughter with Christian. He is a hoot!! Your prayers are so appreciated by families living with Autism. I would ask that you also pray for the marriages of these parents. Thank you!

Thank you LORD, for this family and for your truth that spills out of every word of this story. I marvel at how you came back into their lives with the love and the truth shared with a sweet boy. And taht you care more than enough to be patient with our anger - you are so loving.

I pray for everyone touched by autism this day. That teachers would be kind and patient, parents would be thoughtful and inspired and rested. And that we all would have a burning desire to not necessarily take what the medical field takes only into account, we would seek YOU!

I loved what Jenny McCarthy said in an article in US magazine Thursday October 16, 2008 http://www.usmagazine.com/news/jenny-mccarthy-my-son-is-no-longer-autistic

"I made a deal with God," she explains. "I said, 'You fix my boy, you show me the way and I'll teach the world how I did it.'"

Thank you LORD for being ever present in everything and anything we do - and I promise, I will tall of your glory, how could I not.

In Jesus name,
Amen

Dear Beth,

I can't begin to tell you how much it means to have my blog sisters lift up in prayer those whose families have been touched by autism. Our younger daughter is a beautiful sixteen year with autism. She is considered high functioning and although we've had some very rough childhood and preteen years, she is doing well. We remain hopeful for the plans God has for her life.

The hardest hurts we have suffered have come from those in the church that just didn't understand our situation. So again, thank you from my heart for your love and prayers.

Praise you, Lord that when we are weak, you are strong. You speak every language and know every thought, whether we can communicate it or not. There is no barrier, no language, no obstacle nor anything in all creation that can separate us from your love in Christ Jesus.
You are the God of all comfort and we ask you to fill the parents and children affected by autism with your comfort and grace. Your grace is sufficient for our every need. Each child is your creation, made in your image, and on the last day we will rise in our resurrected bodies with no more pain and no more sorrow.
We praise you Father that you are Sovereign, that there is NOTHING outside of your control, and you do not allow more burdens than we can handle. And when we are tired and frustrated, You embrace our brokenness by pouring your love and strength into our lives. We ask you to pour blessings into the lives of every parent who has been working so hard to provide for their special needs children. Give them a delight today.
We praise and thank you for who You are and all that you do for us.
In the mighty name of JESUS,
Amen

When my youngest son was a baby, I noticed he was different than my oldest had been. He wasn't very affectionate with me, and wouldn't let anyone else hold or hug him. He rarely responded when simply spoken to. He would sit quietly and arrange his toys according to kind or size or color.
At 18 mos. he wasn't speaking, not even "mama." My greatest fear was that he was autistic, but I confided this in no one. I took him to the pediatrician to address the speech issue. I felt if I could get him talking, everything would be OK. The Dr. said, "Wait until he's 2 and if he still isn't talking, we'll send him to a speech therapist." My heart said, "No!"
I was in church at the time, but not living for God. I began to pray for God to heal my son and I begged for forgiveness for every sin I'd ever committed because I was certain this was God's punishment.
I began looking into possible speech therapy, but was told by our insurance company that it would not cover it at his age unless it stemmed from an injury!
God, in His great mercy and grace, led me to a Dr. who suggested the local college's speech therapy program where students led by their professors diagnose and treat children for a sliding scale fee.
Notice, God did not address the other issues, only the speech. I believe He began where He knew I could best cope.
As my trust in Him grew, my son's progress grew. Each month the Dr's. diagnosis became less severe.
One of the most joyous moments in my life was when, during 'play therapy' Holden said his first sentence - "red car go down." I'd never heard anything more beautiful!
And all of the other issues? God took them, too. I don't deserve the mercy He gave.
I know this isn't the way this story always end. I know. I know.

And so I pray His infinite love, mercy, grace, strength, comfort, and peace for my siestas whose stories He is writing differently than mine.

Father

Today is a special day for special Mothers and Fathers. Jesus said that he would not leave us as orphans, but that he would send a Comforter, a helper, a guide to be with us and direct us. I ask you Father to please send our God of Comfort today to the families who deal with autism on a daily basis. Please give the parent’s great endurance and patience pertaining to all aspects of dealing with autism. Jesus flood them with your love. But mostly, protect the couple’s marriage and the other children in the family. Let this special child be a special blessing to each family member. Use this special one to teach them something that only they would learn from him or her. Let this precious one, with your help Jesus, bring the family so much more closer to each other, but mostly closer to you. I ask this in your beautiful name.

My heart is so touched. Tears overflow. Words are not adequate.
Lord you are the maker of heaven and earth. You knew all of us before we were. You knit us together. You know every hair on our heads. Your ways are higher than our ways and there are so many things we don't understand. But we know You are GOD and we know that You did not cause these things to be. Autism is not your doing nor your idea. Jesus heal them all! ALL!!! Direct the paths of the parents during this healing process. Bring people into their lives that understand and can give Godly advice. Lord, in the name of Jesus I come againt doubt that says you will only heal a few or you will heal other children and not my child. Increase our faith in you. Our eyes are fixed on YOU. Spread wide in your arms the love that covers everything. Lord, wrap your arms of love around your children (parents included)that are currently walking this road of autism. Reassure them of your love. All of this will be for your praise and glory! Amen.

What a testimony to the awesome power of God! I have seen God work in a similar way in the life of my 11-year old sister who has Asperger's syndrome (a type of Autism). She too has come such a long way and is living an almost-totally "normal" life thanks to amazing people God placed in her path and of course, the healing hand of God. God takes special care of those who need it, I do believe that to be true!

Praying today for parents and children who have been affected by autism and all other special needs as well. May they feel God's mighty hand in a rushing way today...

My son has autism - he is 12. I was feeling overwhelmed by him(he is one of 3 children born within 3 years)and life in general when my husband gifted me to go to the updated Breaking Free taping in New Orleans. I can't tell you the blessing that it was. God spoke to me about my bondage of not truly trusting Him with my child and that's why my heart was growing cold and bitter. He used that taping to draw me back to Him.

I'm so grateful because I needed HIm so much when I returned home. The very next week my mother became ill and over Christmas was diagnosed with terminal pancreatic cancer and given 6 - 9 months to live. This added responsibility on top of having three children one with autism and a husband prevented me from doing our Tuesday Bible study at church which was Esther; I didn't feel that I could commit to the homework but I've followed the blog regarding the scripture memory challenge. This challenge was just what I needed for this season instead of formal Bible study homework. I've been faithfully memorizing from the time you suggested it before January but never posted (I'm more of a lurker). I've actually already memorized 10 verses that God has given me for this difficult season.

Today during my quiet time I felt that God was urging me to go back and post my scriptures and officially be a part of the challenge and the community. I resisted thinking it would take too much time to go back and post. Then I logged on and saw Beth's post regarding WAAD. How amazing! It was like God was saying "Lynette you truly belong to this community." So now I'm diligently going back to each post and typing out my scriptures. Thank you Beth and thank you Father that you really do see me in the midst of my daily struggles.

My prayer to you is help the families who are struggling with a child or children with autism, that you give them strength to cope with the challenges that they face daily.
I pray for my own grandchildren, Cole and Clay who both have been diagnosed as being autistic in many ways, and I thank you that their parents are saved and serving you and the boys are knowing you through children's church and family, praise you Jesus. I thank you for healing them and I know without a doubt that the schools and mental health staff will see this as well, praise you Lord.
Bless the families with children of special needs and hold them in your arms.
Thank you Jesus,
AMEN

Oh wonderful and mighty God, Deliverer and Healer, You are sovereign over ALL things. Even the things we don't understand or the painful things in our lives - You see, You know, and You care. You are involved in the VERY details of our lives. God, Your Word tells us we can come boldly before Your throne with our requests. Lord, I come boldly before you today and first ask You for healing, comfort, peace and restoration. That is what we desisre for these precious families and You, Mighty God, are MORE THAN ABLE....YOU HAVE ENOUGH POWER. God, I also know that sometimes You allow things in your Sovereignty, that we can't grasp in our human minds, for a greater glory. God I pray that you would wash over these families and help them to grab hold to You, to Your loving and sweet hand. God your word tells us that our light and momentary troubles are achieving for us and eternal glory that far outweighs them ALL...and that we are to fix our eyes on what is unseen and not what is seen, for what is unseen is ETERNAL and what is seen is temporary. (II Corin 4:17-18) God, make this truth come alive to all of us...may it flow through every cell in our body and flood our minds and thoughts. Lord, I love you and praise You....YOU ARE GOOD, FAITHFUL AND TRUE and we trust YOU.....period. Bless these dear ones, these precious ones that You ordained, planned and purposed, for such a time as this. IT is in YOUR HOLY AND WONDERFUL NAME that I pray. Amen.

My husband and I have 2 beautiful boys and another on the way in 46 days! Gabriel - our 5 yr old - has just been through the "testing" phase and although didn't qualify as a child with Autism - they say he has a Pervasive Development Disorder. Which as I am learning is similar - he has "autistic tendencies". He has also been in an amazing preschool program that has made such a difference in his life but this official disgnosis is still difficult. I worry about what struggles he will face as a child who isn't "typical" and I just pray a special blessing on Gabriel and all children who may not be "typical" but are beautiful children of God. I thank God every day for the blessing He has given us in Gabriel and I wouldn't change a thing about him!

We praise you, Father for most importantly healing our hearts and turning them towards you. Help us to stay the course and to rest in your plan for our lives. Forgive us when we question, but thank you for understanding our desires. I pray you extend grace to these families in the midst of long days and trying to find peace in your answers. We love you, Lord and praise your holy name! Amen.

Our family has walked this path of autism as well. It has turned out much the same as shared in the blog!! Thank you JESUS!!! (My husband and I were saved when we were children)...but the different ups and downs, trials, teachers, therapists, social workers...that come in and out of your life is completely overwhelming at times. But God is faithful and was by us all along the way!! Our son who is now almost 15...didn't talk until he was 4 1/2 and had lots of the autism quirks...but now he is a typical young man...involved in youth group at church, in the praise band, homeschooled with great grades....loves football and Jesus! We believe God has healed him completely and we give Him all the glory!!! I know God has taken us down this path to have an understanding heart for those families with kids with special needs. I do think that we all have "special needs"....that's why we need Jesus!!! : ) Thanks for sharing...and I will be praying for these families today.

Our hearts are tender to the moms and dads of these extra special gifts. You better believe we are praying that God will give you the strength, endurance and wisdom you need. You can do this!

I am the mom of 2 wonderful teenage sons on the autism spectrum. We are planning on college for one and the other is starting high school. For ione year they will be in the same school. I can't imagine life with out them. They make us laugh, cry and many other things all at once.
I don't know if I could deal with "normal" sons these guys are great.

What a thoughtful post! My heart is with anyone dealing with special needs of any kind as I've got an 8yr. old son who I homeschool because he struggles with sensory issues, ADHD, fine motor skill problems, and many other random items that are also symptoms of autism, and asbergers. (but he doesn't have either of those) It's such an uphill battle, and so often feels like you're all alone...I know I've felt that way for the past few years off and on, while getting all the evaluations and assessments done! And so often get the question from him, "Why am I this way Mom?" (which is tough to answer, but God doesn't make ANY mistakes!)

I pray that every mommy out there dealing with this feels the presence of our sweet Daddy in Heaven who created US, and our babies today! And more specifically, that they all know beyond a shadow of a doubt that
God specifically chose our babies for us!! (and us for them) Amen!

It can be frustrating at times dealing with his specialities but we have never doubted his value and true blessing to us. We tell him regularly that God choose to make him this way and to devalue it would be to devalue God's decision and wisdom. Thanks for letting us have a voice.

Thanks so much for this post. My son is also on the "Autism Spectrum". If I can offer any encouragement it is this...denial is not your friend. Once God finally revealed the truth (through evaluation and diagnosis) we were able to help our son thrive. Also, I have seen him over and over do so much more than initally anyone thought he could. Doctors can say what they need to say, but GOD created these precious children and ONLY GOD knows the plans for each one of them. I use 2 Kings 2:2 "As the LORD lives and as you yourself live, I will not leave you."
I am committed to my son Jamie's health and happiness and it may be the only full time job I do forever. Thank you GOD for my destiny, it was not the one I wanted but one I will fulfill to the very best of my ability. To God be the glory!

Lord Jesus, I simply ask for your peace to come into the homes of the families who struggle with still no end in sight, no visible hope of things getting easier. Lord, your word promises that your grace is sufficient for us, that your strength is made perfect in our weakness. I ask you to remember your promise and to perfect your strength in these homes so that your children might find their rest in you, might call upon you for strength, and might resolve to abide in your peace. Lord, I pray over the marriages in these homes. That husbands and wives would not be torn apart by the decisions and difficulties which come with children with special needs and I pray that you give each partner enough grace to pour out on the other partner day in and day out. Lord, I pray for the single parent homes and again, I simply pray for your strengh and your peace. And sweet Father, I pray the truth in Hebrews 12 over these families right now. That they would see the love and response in these comments and that the would recognize the great cloud of witnesses that you have surrounded them with. And Lord, I pray that they would not lose hope and simply keep their eyes fixed on you, calling on your strength and grace to continue forward. I pray your BLESSINGS upon these families, I praise you for the healings that have happened and I ask that you continue to do your mighty work. And Lord, I pray for your unity among believers. That whether we come from a family where your healing power has been displayed, or whether we come from a family where the struggles of a special needs child continue to overwhelm. I pray that you would bring us together through the bond of peace so that we might spur one another on for the glory of your name.

We love you, Lord. And ask that your faithfulness continue to reign in our lives. Amen

Gracious and Loving God,
Your ways are so much greater than ours; Your thoughts of us are precious. In the midst of battles, trials, and tribulations, it is so hard to be still and know that You alone are God and that You are working things out for the Greater Glory! O God, quiet us with Your unfailing love and give us the peace that passes all understanding.
I especially lift up families with autism up to You. Strengthen them for any battles they may face. Comfort them in times of trouble. And Father, we ask for Divine Healing for any broken pieces in whatever way they manifest themselves.
You are the God of more than enough who is sufficient for all.

God, none of us know what "normal" looks like because each of us born of this world can't even imagine what life and living is really like. But one sweet day, Dear Lord. One GLORIOUS and BEAUTIFUL day, when we look upon that BEAUTIFUL face... we will know. We will be transformed in an instant. All of life's mysteries will be revealed and we shall dwell in the House of the Lord forever and ever.

Help us to cling to that hope and promise while we wait. Help us to keep our eyes fixed on the prize of King Jesus. Help us cast off all the sin that so easily entangles us, the weight and pressures of this world that hinder us from running our race with endurance. Bless those who need a double dose of encouragement and hope this day. Give them more than enough.
I ask it in the name of the Living Lord, Jesus.
AMEN

My brother was born with and lives with autism so I saw how things changed over the decades. He also has scoliosis which does not helpt things. When he was first attending school back in the 70s, WV had a special school for all those different than the main stream. That meant he had to ride on a bus for an hour each way and he was around only people with various handicaps and NOT allowed to interact with students at regular school. Then years later the rules changed and all handicap students were integrated into regular school and not only was he made fun of but so was I for being his sister. Kids are sooooo mean and stupid at times. He survived the meanness and graduated even before I did since I took a different path that delayed my graduating. He is highly musically talented but was turned away as a kid from professional training due to the autism and that teacher's fear of dealing with a "retarded" kid. I am glad that word is being fazed out of society since it does not portray a person appropriately. The cutest story about him and his tenacity that I will tell of many, many years ago...one day he was at a class in a different city and missed the bus that would take him home. He walked to each bus stop to try to catch the bus at that stop since he had the bus route times memorized. The problem was that had not gauged how long it took to walk to each stop. When he did not arrive home at the regular time, my parents asked the police of the city he was in to locate him. He was found waiting at a bus stop and my parents were called that he had been found. When they talked to him they asked why he did not use the quarters he had in his pocket to call them, he sweetly said those quarters were for the bus not for a phone call. From then on he carried both bus fare money and phone call money. He has a job, a girlfriend, and lives in an assisted living home. We do not keep in touch as much as I would like due to the distance between Alaska and West Virginia but I am truly proud of him and how he overcame the mean world.

Only you can wrap up a Mama's heart and minister peace that lasts more than a moment. You created us to be nurturers and yet that is the very thing that drives pain straight into our hearts....oh' that you would minister your grace to those who are up to their elbows in the world of a special needs child. Lord, bless them as they serve in a thankless situation. Lord, meet THEIR needs for affirmation, security and hope for their child. Thank you for being the firm foundation for their times, for their children. Oh' Father, breathe strength and life right into those who need it most today. Thank you for posting on World Autism Awareness Day such an amazing witness. Beth, I thank you dearly, and for the asking of pray for families of special needs. I appreciate all the prayers I have been reading here as a special needs mom to an almost 24 year old man who has severe cerebral palsy. His name is Clay. Clay has definitely been molded by the hands of God; what we did not realize was that everyone he has any contact with, in any aspect, is also being molded by the hands of God for reasons we do not yet fully understand. Nor can we comprehend. We are all His vessels; some seem perfectly shaped and formed, others are more obviously flawed, some you have to pick up carefully, under great scrutiny to see that cracks really exist.....will we ever be perfect vessels on Earth? I have learned and continue to learn, that Our Heavenly Potter shapes us to be the vessel He has chosen us to be....it is a challenge to learn that for ourselves; that we accept the flaws, the cracks, the unknown imperfections that we happen upon in life. Those flaws in ourselves; those flaws in other individuals. It is all still a work in progress, sometimes the wheel spins slowly, other times so fast it seems out of control. I imagine those Divine Special Effects are being perfected in the skilled hands who makes all things possible. I am grateful for the supports, the prayers, and the love through this blog; especially, today for the mamas chosen to care for the various, individual vessels upon His potter's wheel, shaped by His Perfect and Mighty Hands! love & hugs.....Annette & Clay

Hi Siestas

Thank you for the wonderful prayers, prompted by such a post on autism. It is so touching to have our needs lifted up in prayer.

Autism entered our life 2.5 years ago and we are fighting our way up and out of it. This group, although not specific to autism, has been a source of encouragement to me. You see, we had some horrible things happen to us at a church because of autism. We left and our very spirits were crushed within us. So deep was the betrayal that we left the church and gave serious thought to never returning.

It has been a BATTLE to find our way back to a loving relationship with God. And you, although you didn't know it, were along for the ride. This was the first "christian" group I joined after the endless weeping stopped. The summer bible study was the first re-entry into talking again with other christian women - and believe me I was scared! The scripture memory too, it has a role in changing my mind, helping me to forgive, helping me to find peace again.

Thank you for remembering the many mothers, fathers, sisters, brothers, grandparents and friends that are impacted by autism. Please be extra kind to them! I meet many moms who have our same story and have fled the church in tears. May the rest of us go the distance to pray & care enough to see them brought back.

Father God, we thank you that each child is such a sweet and precious gift from You. You have each of their lives in Your hands and the plans that You have for them are perfect. Lord, we lift up these beautiful children struggling with autism and ask that You would comfort them this day. May you surround them with Your Presence and allow them to know Your nearness. When everything else seems so confusing for them, may You be their Rock, their stability, their strength. Also, for the families, may you pour out Your love over them today. Help them to not be angry or discouraged, but bless them with hope. Send people into their lives to help them and encourage them and allow them to love on their children when it seems most difficult. Father, we thank you, we love you, and we ask this in the blessed name of Jesus.

Lord, What the world calls defects and deficits, you call perfection. We know that you create each life and you do not make errors. I ask that you strengthen the Momma's of special children, may they hear from you and receive their direction from you. May you console those who are told or feel that their child is "less than." Give them the courage to receive their accolade from you...you notice all that they do. Anoint those that care for the children and those that have influence on the parents. May they only receive Godly encouragement. Please Jesus, settle down the children that act out violently...or give the parents the ability to see the outbursts as you do...just energy cutting loose. Give all that wrestle with this tough road the courage to walk with you. May it be to your glory, this holy week coming that those who pray for their precious ones would see your hand of healing. Resurrect sinking spirits and revive heavy hearts. In the mighty and all healing name of JESUS the CHRIST!

Thank you for that wonderful testimony.

I have a 5 year old with autism. I read this just after getting a message about his IEP for next year, (Kindergartern) and the cuts that will be taking place in special education and the parapro cuts in our finacially struggling school district. I have wanted to write something on my own blog today about Autism awareness day and Autism Speaks, but just don't have the words today. It is so good to read a story of someone who has walked through this particular fire and come out on the other side. I am praying for all the other families in similar situations today.

God Bless.

Please, today, dear Father, let our Siestas who are caring for Special Needs Blessings - especially those who live with autism - Lord, remind them that they're surrounded by You - You're the beginning and the end and You are the Author of everything inbetween. Remind them that their children and their children's stories are in Your hands and Your heart - the safest place they could ever be. Please gently remind them that their children aren't "different" or frustrating or exhausting to You. They're perfect.

I am a Catholic nun. I LOVE children... but God's plan for me doesn't include children of my own. So... I feel like all children are mine. I am praying for all of you who desperately want children and have none, for those with children who are sick or dying or with special needs. I pray in thanksgiving for those who are blessed with healthy, happy young ones, and I pray for those children who are abused and neglected.

This is my humble offering for the Body of Christ. Today I pray especially for those who have the blessing and burden of a child with autism. Our God is mighty to save...He is with you.

And your mercy falls.
I raise my hands

I'll praise You in this storm
And I will lift my hands
For You are who You are

And though my heart is torn
I will praise You in this storm."

Father God I come to you today with many questions that I know can't be answered today or probably even on this earth. I have such a hard time, Father, understanding why the children have to suffer. How God can such bad things ever turn to good? How can the suffering be worth it?

But even in the middle of my quesiton, I know beyond a shadow of a doubt that EVERTHING is according to your PLAN, Father. EVERTHING will have such an amazing end. Your ways are so far above ours. Your love for us is so overwhelming that I know you have nothing but awsomeness in store for us.

Father God, I lift up these children and parents to you. Help them God rejoice in Your love and cling to your promises. Gather them in close to you when they think they just can not do it anymore. Give them signs of hope and show them the miracles that are happening in their lives. Let them see it God so that they can make it one more day. Bless them Father God.

In the same way Father, I believe You have handpicked these moms and dads for these austic children. You see something special in them that they may not see in themselves. Father, please give them encouragement to face each day. Fill them with hope and joy. Fill them with strength emotionally, mentally, physically & spiritually. Provide breaks for them Father, so husband and wife can get some alone time to strengthen their marriage. Please provide family & friends who will love their children while they are away. Open up our eyes, God, to see how we can best help them. Please send them gold nuggets from You Father...specific treasures each day that they will know only could come from You! And Father, for those single moms...I ask especially that You would make Yourself so real to them. Provide real friends for them to talk to and pray with. May each parent experience Your love through these prayers today. In Jesus' Precious Name, Amen.

I am also a social worker for families who have children with autism, and i see first hand the struggles, frustrations and despair of parents everyday. So many of these families are trying to do this autism thing alone... without support, and without God. Everyone needs the loving support of God, and it is so evident in these families lives. I pray that God would continue to pursue them, and use their children to draw them to Him. I pray that we would continually lift Him up, so that He can draw these families to Himself.

Thank you so much for posting this. I, too, have a child that has developmental delays and struggles with sensory integration and processing issues, but GOD IS SO FAITHFUL! He handpicked her teachers this year and He has provided a GODLY Occupational Therapist that has loved her from the first day we met. She is not where she needs to be, but God is showing us over and over again that His plan is perfect and that through Him we can conquer the everyday challenges that we face. We will probably go through first grade again, but she has made so much progress and is READING!! PRAISE THE LORD!! She loves school. She loves Jesus and she loves church and she is so hilarious that she cracks us up at least twice a day! What a blessing!!
I am also the special needs coordinator at my church and what a blessing it is to welcome those with special needs and their families into the family of God!! We have taken kids with special needs to worship for the first time in their lives and to see them worship will make you WEEP!! Unashamed and unhindered they will sing and lift their hands and just worship. OH! It is the biggest blessing of my life to see God minister to these lives that are often overlooked. We are having a special missions fair TONIGHT to get the word out to our church and other parents in the community that we are here and we are ministring to those with special needs in wonderful ways. God is doing a great thing and He has a place for each and every child.
It makes me want to dance!!

my memory verse this week seems appropriate. "Be joyful in hope, patient in affliction, faithful in prayer." God bless you all as you seek to give your God and your children your best. Sometimes I tell my mother with altzheimers, "Mom, you do the best you can as long as you can, and that's all you can do." Same is true for every situation. Look forward to your little joys, while waiting for the blessed hope, be patient during every trial, and continue to pray that God accomplishes in you all that he wants to work. We're all in this together. You have your trial; I have mine. Let's stick it out and expect that God will work it all out for good in His way and His time. Til then, you're in my prayers today!

Thank You, Lord, for those who rest in the knowledge that Your Will is perfect. Thank You, Lord, for those who proclaim Your wonder-working power!
Lord, embrace those who are suffering in anger, doubt and despair by reaching out to them with Your Nail-Scarred Hand. Show them the true miracle...God came down to save me and those who will only believe in Your Good News...
We love You and we love those who are living in need of Your Power at work in their lives. Give strength and hope to them. In Jesus Name. Amen.

I have a neighbor who has fostered, and adopted, 5 children--beyond her 3 biological kids...and each child has some sort of challenge--2 of them with various forms of autism. As she ministers night and day, I pray that God will continue granting her mercy and grace...and may she live to see the fruit of her labor come forth!

Lord Jesus,
You are so faithful to us even when we would turn aside, be filled with anger because we don't understand your ways. I praise you for you faithfulness, your holy pursuit of your children. I praise you that through this experience, this mom developed such a faith in you, such a heart for others who are hurting, and experienced such a miracle that you cannot be denied. Praise you, Lord, for in every circumstance, you are sovereign and you are faithful to redeem, restore, renew and heal.

I pray for all the moms who are struggling with a burden too heavy to carry on their own. Thank you for your loving embrace that carries them through. I pray for all those afflicted with this disorder that the gentle voice of the Holy Spirit can still be heard in their hearts and they will find you. I pray for the family unit that feels like cracking under the pressure for you are mighty to save and more than able to repair.

Praise you, Lord, that in all circumstances, your will is worked out. May every bit of pain, struggle, tears, and doubt, be brought before your throne and your healing touch bring peace and comfort. Bring your resources, your knowledge, wisdom, and healing to these families and cause them to see your hands at work. Be glorified, Jesus.
In the name of our Savior, Jesus,
Amen

DEarest Heavenly Father, we give You all the praise for this awesome testimony from our dear Siesta about the healing of her son from autism, and the spiritual healing of she and her whole family as a result. My heart goes out to these dear families and what they cope with on a daily basis, LORD, but we know You have a plan and it is a plan for good and not for evil. We give You praise that we see Your hand at work in my niece and her husbands life who have two son's with autism. (We have a niece on the other side of the family who has showed all the signs of autism, but suddenly, his whole demeanor changed and now he is connecting emotionally with people, whereas before there was never any eye contact.) We've been praising you LORD and are so grateful for this turn around. I pray that every family who deals with this burden in their beloved children will sense Your watchcare and concern, and will receive extra measures of your grace to be victorious and believe for miracles of Your healing power. We give thanks too LORD for those who dedicate their lives to helping the children affected learn and grow, and for the strategies you show the families in dealing with the daily difficulties and frustrations that invariably come in coping with these special needs children. Help us to be a caring and understanding community of faith, and help us lift the heavy burden that some bear on a daily basis, to bring life and that more abundantly through the name of your precious Son, the LORD Jesus Christ". Amen...

Give them Your peace that passes all understanding, and a special hug to those special children. And thank You for my own nephew and his mom, my sister. Thank you for the way I have seen You provide strength and direction in their own lives, and for the love that you pour out to them. Help those moms who do not know you to find You and the strength and comfort that comes in leaning hard on You for all their needs!

I work with several autistic children on a regular basis and know how difficult it can be. I pray often for their families and the families of other children with autism and other disabilities. Their work is truly never done and even rest is hard to come by.

Heavenly Father, Please help the mothers of these precious children remember that You are always right there with them as they struggle with raising and caring for their special kids. Bless each family and give them Your strength and the fruit of the Spirit to help them and do Your will each day!

Precious Father, I ask you to be with this wonderful family whom I know Your Hand is upon and to continue to guide them on their path so they can draw closer to You and fulfill YOUR PERFECT Plan. I pray that you are with any & every family who has special needs childrens and for those who have children period. In this world today, society is very 'mean' even to what they call 'normal' but for 'anyone' who is different for any reason, it's just cruel. Lord the blessing I am thankful for is that those that are unique shine so brightly for YOU and Your Love, Your Peace and Mercy, and are the true miracles. I pray that You lift up everyone that has posted and bless them for their testimonies, for their prayers and care. I truly pray that You continue to Bless Beth and her wonderful ministry for influencing so many lives and just being so in love with You and focused on doing Your will that it is contagious. Praise Jesus for that because it spreads the Gospel like wildfire when people are so passionate about YOU. Thank You for all the blessings You have given me and being my Beloved. In Christ's Precious and Holy Name, Amen.

Thank you for acknowledging this day. It is a great encouragement when worlds collide and the community of faith lifts up those of us--growing in number--who experience autism in our homes. My son is 14. Providentially today also marks the bittersweet conclusion of my group studying Esther! So, it is not by accident that the profound lessons we just summarized shape my prayer and outlook.

Lord in Heaven we worship you as the Mastermind, Creator, Healer, and Sustainer of our children, our marriages, and ourselves. You hold us firmly imprinted in your fist. For these children with autism we stand in the gap interceding as Christ Himself does for a reversal of their destinies. In your Providence, will you turn the tables for them, take what the world says is impossible and make it possible for them. You alone have the power to turn every curse into a blessing because you love us. Praise you and thank you Lord that in the process you give each mom a purpose to share stories for your glory!

For those who want to pray corporately all month (April is Autism Awareness month), there is a fabulous scriptural guide at http://childrenofdestiny.org/turning_the_tide.asp

Thank you for sharing this story with us. It is much needed encourgament for me as well as many other mothers of special needs children.
My son has Duchenes Muscular Dystrophy. We are in a constant fight against this disease and i feel like I have been on an emotional rollercoaster every since he was diagnosed 6 years ago. This may not make since to anyone but God and I have had many wrestling matches over Ryan. But I have to tell you my relationship with God would not be what it is today without the struggles over the last 6 years. With each wrestling match i have with God i come away feeling like he is given me a little bit more strength ,faith and trust then what i had before. When the doctor told us that his disease had no cure, no hope and that Ryan had no future i was like you don't know my GOD! He has plans for Ryan, those plans include hope and a future and i pray everyday that God will use this situation for his glory! I will never give up hope that God can if he so chooses , touch and heal my son as well as all those other special needs children .
Dear Jesus,
I pray for all those other parents that have special needs children that you will give them peace that passes understanding, strength for today and HOPE for tommorow. I pray that you would also send compassionate people into their lives , to offer encouragment and support in whatever way they might need. May they feel your strong loving arms around them and that you would bless them in a special way. I ask that you give them wisdom for decisions that they have to make and protect over their marriage as they deal with the added stress this puts on their family. Show up in a mighty way in each childs life!

My six-year-old son has ben showing signs of Aspergers (on the autism spectrum) and will be evaluated next month so we can know exactly what we're dealing with. As a mom dealing with this potential diagnosis, I am so grateful for these prayers today!

We know that God has big plans for our little boy. I call him "my little evangelist" because of his incredible heart to share Jesus with everyone he knows who has yet to be saved. I fully believe that God is using this to prepare my boy for His purposes. It will be a difficult road, but I cannot wait to see what kind of glory comes to God as a result!

My son is 8 and is on the autism spectrum. In the beginning I wondered if the pain would ever go away. It took about 5 years. We had other difficulties to deal with as well (job, financial, etc.) After awhile we became very cynical. My husband told me he wanted me to take the 'Believing God' study (you know, men don't usually take those) so we could both benefit from it. It was definitely the beginning of better things to come. Since then, we have filled up one journal with just 'blessings' from God, one after the other. We've started a new one now.

Here is my current struggle:

Other people's pity.

Someone very dear to me keeps making comments that are very discouraging. I'm trying so hard to become the person that God wants me to be. I want to serve him with my whole heart. I want to grow and to continue to see his hand in 'everything' that he puts in my life. I tell her, "Don't you think I'm blessed? Look at such and such and such." And she says, "No", very sadly filled with pity. And you know Satan is using those comments to torment me.

What do I do? Please pray for me!

Give each of these parents what they need, when they need it, and a double portion of faith and patience. Give each of these children the plan that only You can have for them.

I've tried several times to post a comment here and just couldn't yet. The emotion this post brings to my heart and my eyeballs is so strong. Being a pediatric physical therapist, I have loved so many beautiful children on the autism spectrum over the last 15 years. Being a mom myself, I know that nothing compares to a mama's or a daddy's love... but I can tell you that a therapist's love is pretty strong too. I can't put into words for you the joy, so deep in your heart that it wells up in your eyes joy, that comes from the little things that most of us as parents with 'typical' children take for granted every single day. To work with a gorgeous little girl for almost a year before she finally looked me right in the eyes and hugged me... to talk with moms and dads who are in nothing short of survival mode on a day to day basis... there are so many things that we just flat take for granted in life. But not these parents.

I'd like to take this opportunity to Thank You Father, for giving each of these precious children the parents you've chosen for them. Thank You for the daily measure of grace and hope and patience that they have, even more than most of us can even fathom. I pray for every person reading this, that you will touch their lives and provide them opportunities to be a blessing to these families, in even the smallest of details that You are so good at putting into motion.

Thank you Jesus,
Amen!

I would appreciate prayers for my oldest son, he still struggles with his 7 year old sister's challenges and personality, and can not bring himself to treat her with respect and love, and it breaks my heart every single day.

Thank you, Thank you, thank you for the prayers and this post acknowledging mom's and families who deal with autism. It is only by God's love and grace that I am able to deal with our precious daughter's autism each day. She has taught me more about Jesus and his love than anything else in the world. Autism can be a very lonely thing because of the difficulty taking our kids different places, etc... and because of the lack of understanding of most people to know what a day in the life of autism looks like. But today, I don't feel so lonely. I feel your prayers and your love. ~Susan in Chicagoland

Father God,
I thank you that you love all of us the same! I thank you for my involvement in the lives of these children who are special in so many ways. I ask you today Lord to touch all the families affected by autism and give them strength to make it through each day. Not just to make it but to thrive and find joy each day. It gets hard Lord so we turn to you in our struggle.
I pray now for my specific families. You know who they are Lord. I thank you for each of them!

Beth,
I can't thank you enough for this post! It is true there are many among us with this behavioral issue living normal lives in normal families. It takes your breath away to experience it, but God blesses you in the midst of it! My nephew is 14 this year. My family believes immunizations were a contributing factor to his autism....long story and genetic inheritance to back it up.

Saturday, in Huntsville, AL, there is an autism walk to raise money for treatments, research and most importantly support for family and friends.

It is not something you wish for or even really appreciate when it lands in your lap, but it is truly a blessing to experience these precious autistic children/adults.

Years ago my mom decided that she wanted my sister (her daughter) not to miss church with her family. Many churches do not offer services for these "special friends". My mom also wanted her grandson to want to go to church and learn about Jesus, so she started a "special friends" ministry at church. It has gotten special attention to the point that many that do not attend church on a regular basis did for this service alone. She puts together Vacation Bible School for these autistic children and a sensory camp every summer during summer break. She is also the POC for the autism walk.

It is truly an incredible blessing in disguise for many families. You never know what God will allow you to endure or what he will expect of you until the time comes.

Thanks again for this post!!

Comfort their hearts and give them peace in the pain and in the storm. Strengthen their faith in You and keep them so close. I pray for those little ones with autism, oh Lord, keep them safe and bring just the right teachers and helpers into their lives. I can't even begin to understand, but You do - I ask for extra grace to flood over them and a peace "that passes understanding". Give them needed rest and respite. Send caregivers that are called to minister to their families in unique ways. Shine down Abba - be real and tangible in their lives.

I am a speech therapist who works with special needs preschoolers in a school district. Every morning before I even turn a light on in my therapy room, I get down on my knees and put my face on the floor and ask God for special wisdom on how I can help these very special children communicate. Each child is so very different from the next and what "clicks" for one child does not work for another. What "clicks" one day doesn't guarantee that it will "click" the next. I want so badly to open up the world for them, to do what's right and to not waste a minute of learning time. I pray that "this will be the day" for a major breakthrough and the families will be blessed beyond measure.
Lord, I ask that they all feel your loving arms around them and they know that it is you Father.

I was also priviledged for 18 years to care for a severally handicapped child with extreme health issues -the Lord knew the 2 special kids that would fit into our home and heart and I cared for them "as unto the Lord" as I had memorized that verse in Colossians 3:17 as young girl - it has allowed me to focus all of my lifes work to honour Him. A quick comment before my prayer: Our granddaughter was evaluated and did have several "red flag" aspects of autism. We were devastated because it seemed that all our hopes and dreams for her brilliant future had been squashed. Well-meaning people in our church family said things to us like "it could be worse". Yes, it could be worse if you consider life-threatening diseases, but our beautiful Lily was going to face many challenges just the same, and she was so young! Praise be to God, with just the right therapists and just the right pre-school, she has now made tremendous progress in the last year. Don't ever let us down-play ANYONE'S suffering, just because we can think of "something worse".

Dear Precious Heavenly Father, place your loving hands on the children in our world who have special needs and special challenges. Give them and their families comfort, strength and peace in their particular situation. Place just the right helpers in their lives at just the right time to bring the best results. We know that you suffer whenever any of your precious children suffer and we thank you that you love us so much and are mindful of every single one of us. Praise your Holy Name for each and every darling child and for the ones who care for them. Thank you for every victory. May the glory be Yours forever! AMEN

The first 3 years were the toughest years I have ever had in my life- exhausting, lonely, despairing, frustrating, fearful. I remember constantly praying but feeling like God was not near to me. It was just a time when God was not choosing to answer my prayers at that moment. But I never doubted that He was working. I could see Him taking care of our family, taking care of our needs, and working miracles in my little boy. God is so faithful, even when we don't "feel" like He's near.

My son is in a typical first grade class now, and is only a shadow of what he was then. For whatever reason, God chose to work in him to the point that many people don't even know there is any thing different about him! PTL He is SUCH a blessing and joy to be around! Not only to us, but people who meet him say he brings such joy to them, too. And God has taught me SO much through this experience.

I am so humbled and thankful for all the dear ladies who read this blog who are praying for all of us today. Thank you dear sisters.

Lord, We ask for blessings to flow on these special families that you have chosen to care for your children. May they have patience when needed and a giggle when times are especially tough. May they have teachers that love their children just as they do and see all the special characteristics as they do. May they always know how your love rains down on them all day, every day - even if they don't feel it. In Jesus, we pray.

Just reading the posts here has uplifted my heart! My oldest daughter is Autistic and 18. When she entered school they thought she was ADHD, and they told me she was M.R....I told them even then, all they had to do was find the key to unlock her mind. During the first few years in shcool she proved to be smarter than they thought, but they had decided they had taken her as far as they were willing.. I knew she was capable of more than they gave her credit for and when they wouldn't work with her, I pulled her from public school and put her in a private school, from which she will graduate this May and go to college in the fall. We do not know how all of this will turn out, but we plan to focus on God and allow Him to work in her life.. It is hard to think about letting her grow up, because she is just so trusting.
My Prayer is that God will grant the parents of special needs children the strenght to let them grow up. It is a struggle not to want to baby her, but she has to grow up and I have to lean on God's promises of taking care of her.

Holy Father, please help us parents, to know how to let our kids grow up and try new things and help us to have the words if at any point they fall. Thank you for all these wonderful posts and bless all of the Siestas for their love.
Thank you for everything. In Your Name. Amen

Heavenly Father, I lift up all those Moms-really Supermoms-who parent an autistic child. Please let each one of them know you hold them in the palm of your hand and that you have a plan for their precious children. Let them know that all the blood, sweat, and tears through good times and difficult times does not go unnoticed. Thank you for your love and faithfulness.

Father God,
Thank you for showing Your loving kindness to all of Your children.

I especially lift up to You today Your children who struggle with mental and physical challenges here on this Earth.

Father God, You always show us how Faithful You are in giving such a loving and caring spirit to teach us as all of your children to live out Your words in: 1 Samuel 16:7-Man looks at the Outward Appearance, God Looks at the Heart.

Eventhough children may struggle for a while physically and mentally here on ths Earth, they have a special place in Your heart and in Your Kingdom in Heaven. Let us do our best to care for "Your children" while they are here on this Earth. Thank you for Your loving Grace to all of your children.

In Your Name I Pray,
Amen

Lord, You are so faithful and Your mercy brings us fresh, new hope every morning. You knew us before we were formed in our mother's wombs. Your creation is perfect. Bless these families who have the monumental task of raising a child with disabilities. Open the hearts of those around them and make them a blessing of help and comfort. You work all things together for our good when we follow You. Amen

Father,

I thank You for your perfection in creation and in the way that You knit us together in the womb. You have a plan for each and every child you bring into this world! Thank YOU! I pray that each family that is blessed with an autistic child would rise to the occasion and bring YOU the glory through their experience.

I pray that as they go through the emotions and trials and autistic child can bring, that they would be blessed by Your love and grace and that they would keep their eyes on You, their Creator and Father.

In the precious name of Jesus,

Amen

Father, I bring before You families with autistic children. I pray that You guide them and lead them in caring for that precious child that You have given them. I pray that they cry out to You for help in caring and raising them. Each child is special in Your sight and You know what they need to live. Help their parents not to get discouraged but to be on their knees daily for that precious one. Guide them and lead them every step of the way. You, Father are faithful! Thank you for these families and the work that You are doing in their lives.
In Jesus name I pray, Amen

Precious Lord, thank you for your miraculous healing for this sweet sister's son. Her story is eerily similar in detail to my own except our son hasn't received his miracle or breakthrough yet and he's coming up on 17. If you choose to heal mine too, PRAISE YOU! If you choose not to for whatever reason, PRAISE YOU! I TRUST YOU AND REST KNOWING THAT ONE DAY HE WILL BE IN YOUR ARMS TOTALLY HEALED!!!!!
I LOVE YOU MY PRECIOUS FATHER!

This blog post hit me head-on. About 7 or 8 years ago while volunteering at LPM, I had a similar problem and this precious friend of LPM talked with me and gave advice to me for my daughter who had my first grandson. This grandson was displaying some "symtoms" and we did not know what to do. LPM prayed down the house for my daughter and my grandson. Now he is about to turn 10 and is in a wonderful school called "The Parish School". My grandson has said many, many times that Parish saved his life. God was right beside my daughter and son-in-law the whole time. My grandson also at the age of 9, asked his mother to pray with him to have Jesus come into his heart. Oh what a glorious day that was. Thank you for sharing this magnificent story with us.

Wow, now that I'm crying after reading that story, I will most definitely be adding my own prayer for all the amazing mothers of autistic, and any special needs children. I work as a rehabilitation counselor and specialize in those with autism, so this story is so near to my heart.

My Sweet Jesus,
This woman's story reminds me so much of the lives of women I hear about every day at work...the only difference is, the women I work with haven't come to know You and see purpose in all this yet. I beg You for the souls of these precious mother's who I feel so blessed to be able to counsel every day. I pray You would use my feeble attempts to help their child to show off You and all Your glory. Call them to Your side, let them bask in your presence long enough to see You and all You long to do in their lives through their children. I love You so much. Thank you for allowing me the privilege of working with these autistic children each day. They light up my life and show me You in ways I never thought possible. I love You more than words can say. Amen.

Who am I, O Sovreign Lord, that you would bless me and my family, that You would bring us SO far? How gracious You are, O Lord....how merciful! Father God, You chose to bless me with 3 healthy wonderful children....I never even had to question serious health issues in regards to them. Father, I ask You to reassure them of Your loving kindness, I ask You to remind us that You have each of us - especially our children - right in Your palm. You are Sovreign, Lord. I so appreciate this chance to prayerfully support parents and children with special needs. Our adult son has finally found his niche in life and is able to shine in who God made him to be. Every heart knows its own sorrow but I've thought many times if he'd had a physical disability, he would have received more understanding from others. As it is, he's attractive and bright and it's hard for people to understand why "simple" things are difficult for him. It's been a long painful journey but God has faithfully provided what - and who - he needed to grow and become the person He designed him to be. His challenges have strained our family but in the end, God is making all of us more like Him through this. God has made His word to be life and health to me through this. Some of my favorites have been:
Exodus 2:1-2 "..and she (Moses' mother)gave birth to a son. When she saw that he was a fine child, she hid him for three months" KJV says "and when she saw he was no ordinary child"

I can identify with the heart break of the father in Mark 9:17-29. For his son's healing he prayed, "Lord, I do believe, help me overcome my unbelief!"

John 11:3-5 "Lord, the one you love is sick" When He heard this, Jesus said "This sickness will not end in death. No, it is for God's glory so that God's Son may be glorified through it."

Is. 42:3 "A bruised reed He will not break, and a smoldering wick He will not snuff out. In faithfulness He will bring forth justice."

And of course - what needed to be my theme verse in dealing with him, Nehemiah 9:17 "...But You are a forgiving God, gracious and compassionate, slow to anger and abounding in love."

It can be so encouraging as a parent when others love on your child and don't ostracize them because they're different. Also, to encourage us as parents to pray big prayers for these special children and not see us as naive when we are trusting God to do for them what seems at times to be impossible.

Thank you again.

My Father, You know the needs, You set this all in motion, nothing is too great for You, the Almighty. I humbly come to You, on Your Son's authority, being wash in His blood, the blood of the Lamb, JESUS. In His name i ask You to encourage, lift up, and show out in each of these lives. Be undeniable to the world, Lord, that You are the Great I AM!
amen

On a personal note: As one who has a Learning Disability (though not as intrusive as Autism) the best thing you can do for those you know who "learn differently" is to not expect them to see things the way you do, to keep an open mind, and to do as this family has done and does...try any possibility, cause you(we) never know what will make it click for them (us).

Precious Lord, I lift up these sweet families dealing with this difficult issue to You today. Thank You for hand-picking them to take care of and raise these blessings You have created. No one else could care for them the way these parents can - You knew that. I pray You give them guidance, strength and endurance in their God ordained roles. Give them joy, oh God. I pray they see glimpses of You through their child(ren). You have given them the blessing to experience what no other parent can - I pray they see that. I thank You that each of your autistic children have a plan and purpose - a destiny in life, just as we all do. May Your glory, Your power, Your mercy, be shown through their lives.

God bless you for posting this. It very closely resembles my own story and that of my totally amazing and blessed son. He is now 15 and I cannot praise God enough for the healing that has happened. I believe my son doesn't have to be "cured" from his autism. He is exactly who God planned for him to be. This past year, he entered 8th grade, is on the honor roll at his school, and is loved by everyone who knows him. God has truly blessed me and never left us no matter how mad, frustrated or defeated we felt.

Lord, only You can enable us to be victorious concerning what has been allowed in our lives by You. Rom. 8:26-28, the Spirit Himself pleads in our behalf with groanings too deep for utterance, and prays in accordance with Your will for us. You work ALL things together for our good-for those who love God and are called according to Your design and purpose! May they know that You are their Source of strength, Lord, for those parents who have special needs children. You gave them those children as a blessing-a blessing, Ps. 127:3. You are their Creator, who does not make mistakes! They are fearfully and wonderfully made. I pray that these precious, worn-out parents would not get angry with you, but that they would understand that every good and perfect gift comes from you-with Whom there is NO variation or shadow of turning-in You is light, and there is no darkness at all! You are good, and Your lovingkindness endures forever!! Praise You, Lord! Be their all! I pray that they would cling desperately to you, and require You as their vital necessity to get through the day, Lord, because sufficient for the day is it's own trouble. We love you, we want You. Show Yourself mighty to these hurting parents. May they glorify You in the midst of their pain. Phil. 1:20 In Your Precious and Holy Name, Lord, AMEN!:)

Please add me to your prayer list. I REALLY need prayer. My son is 5 and was diagnosed with ADHD and Pervasive Developmental Disorder. I am devestated. I'm a basket case at times. My husband and I just find ourselves crying out "why" and "what did we do wrong". I see my precious son struggling in preschool. He starts kindergarten this year. I get anxiety just thinking about it. Please pray for us. We have seen God move mightily in our lives. We know He can do the same with our son. It's just hard dealing with the battle that goes on your mind sometimes.

Thanks so much!

Father,

Thank you for this amazing testimony of how you pursue us even when we are not asking. Your mercy is measureless. Please be with the mommies of autistic children. We know they have a special place in your heart. Please show them in your love in ways only Christ can. Let them know how wide and long, high and deep your love is for them, especially during a moment when the children need calming.

May an extra portion of your resurrection power be given to them today so that they may keep pressing on toward the goal you have for them.
In Your precious Son's name,

Amen

Our sweet Father,

Would you give special comfort and encouragement to those parents who spend themselves for their children. Would you continue to open their eyes to see their child the way that you see them. Instill in that child a knowledge of your purpose for them and the truth that they were knitted together by You, the Creator and Sustainer of all things.

Make any desperation 'from' into desperate 'to' You God. Jesus, we remind ourselves that you have given us everything we need for life and godliness, through the knowledge of Him who called us. You, dear parents, have been given the privilege of this call that so few could ever imagine.

Thank you for giving these children the families that You have given them. Please strengthen, equip, and encourage these families as they care for their children. Remind them that You will not let the waters pass over them and that You will never leave them.

Father, I also pray for special times of refreshment for these parents who give selflessly.

In the name of Jesus,
