A Stringy Blue Bracelet and the Old Rugged Cross

A move always unearths interesting things. Curtis and I have spent the last month getting settled in our new house and unpacking everything from junk to earthly treasures. I found numerous unopened bottles of baby shampoo and lotion I didn't realize we had. I also found photo albums that I thought had been eaten up by a black hole. One of the albums is from my trip to Israel with my mom in 1997. I was very relieved to find that. I happily unpacked this beautiful Lladro' figurine that my dear Mrs. Mary Helen gave me when Curt and I got engaged. I've never had the proper place to display it (fearing destruction by a naughty cat or by a curious toddler), so I have been saving it for the right time. I finally have the perfect spot for it in my new house. One thing I was hoping to find but that hasn't turned up yet is my Aggie Ring - a prized possession for any graduate of Texas A&M University. It went missing two moves ago when I was great with child and wasn't wearing it on a regular basis. Only the Lord knows where that thing is.

Your Living Proof sisters are still in an unpacking frenzy. I went to work in the new office for the first time yesterday and things were in high gear. There was a large team of volunteers helping get the resource area in order. LPM has about thirteen paid staff members, but we have many, many more people than that who are critical to the operation of this ministry. That includes each and every one of you who prays for us, even though we don't have the honor of seeing your sweet faces each week!

While I was at the office, I found some garments of praise (outfits for praise dancing) that someone had sent to us. Someone else found a box filled with hundreds of blue yarn Believing God bracelets. We did Believing God in the fall of 2002, so those babies are more than five years old. We wore the bracelets during the Bible study to remind us to believe God. My mom got the idea from Numbers 15:37-41. (The blue yarn frays at the ends and makes tassels.) The original bracelets we wore have long since fallen off, but when we need to focus intensely in prayer on a particular matter, we don't hesitate to tie new ones on our wrists.

Curtis must have uncovered some bracelets during the packing phase because I noticed he had one on his wrist one day after work. "Yes," I thought, "he is one of us now!" Over the weekend we both noticed that the bracelet had fallen off. Sometimes the yarn stretches out. You really have to tie it on tight if you want it to make the distance.

Last weekend the weather was incredibly beautiful and we felt inspired to go to the Texas Bluebonnet Festival in a tiny country town called Chappell Hill. The bluebonnet is state flower of Texas, in case anyone wanted to know. I bought a really neat, rather large wooden cross at the festival and Curtis and I took turns carrying it around.

Fast forward a couple of days. I hadn't hung the cross on a wall yet and I picked it up to move it to a different spot. Something dark and stringy fell from it and imagine my surprise to find that it was Curtis' Believing God bracelet! It was attached to the cross the entire time...just where it should have been. If our faith isn’t attached to the Cross of Christ, we’re hanging on by a thread.

Thanks for the reminder of the Blue Yarn. Beleiving God was the first Bible Study I had done in about 20 years. It really brought alive the hunger I have for God's Love and Word. I still use the book mark that was in the back and tied to it is my Blue Yarn. Thank you all for all the LPM staff does.

I am in a community Bible study and we're in the last week of Believing God. I so don't want it to end!

I actually posted today about when your mom had the women come up on stage and put on their coats of shame, and then take them off.

Amen sister on this and Praise You Lord . I just found out my ninty-four year old Grandmother has lung cancer and is going to get chemo. Please join with me to pray for Her.

The Lord is so good went to bring the kids to school came back because I forget to get my older Son's belt and our year old Beagle got into some prescription medication brought her to the vet and Praise God She is alright. It's like having a child she eats everything.

I'm going to try the blue braclet maybe I can remind myself to calm down before I flesh out and to call upon the Lord instead .

The Lord is just so awesome to remind us that He is the whole reason for us just Being!

You know I still have my blue piece of yarn. It is packed in a storage unit in Abilene.

I am thinking I just may go out and buy a bundle of blue yarn. The reminder is great.

Do you think it would be too much to wear more than one? maybe 10?

Great Blog, Amanda!

Very timely Amanda! I have been out on a limb hanging on by dental floss (which by the way, is where He wants me) for SO long, it's beginning to feel like home. Last year on what I found out was, the first night of Passover, God gave me specific promises about people (a great number of them) leaving Egypt(captivity) and as we left, "plundering our Egypt". I have watched all year as God set captives free in various ways. I knew the last person to leave Egypt was going to be my husband and his sister because they had been there longer than anyone else. On Sunday, my sister in law was set free in an amazing chain of events that had her meet THE LORD as Bridgeroom, Kinsmen Redeemer, a way she had never seen Him before. At that, she BELIEVED even though she's been a Christian for 40 years! My husband is next. My birthday is Saturday. Guess what night Passover starts on? Yep, it's that personal to me! God's timing is perfect and personal! I have been "Believing God" with my blue bracelet and clinging to the Old Rugged Cross and my Jesus for the miracle that He is bringing about! To the Praise of His Glorious Name!

Wow, God is amazing to remind us of that truth! What an encouragement~thanks for sharing that with us. I wish I still had my blue threaded bracelet. It's been 3 years since my Christian walk with Jesus was forever changed through "Believing God". The other night I was reading through my B.G. homework and I was reminded how God stretched my faith in a huge way during that study. I was believing God for my wayward son throughout that study and it was such a painful time for me~(I had almost given up on him, by the way!) Anyway,God moved in a very HUGE way during that study and after I finished it with my Small Group, my son actually did the study with me, just the 2 of us! It also changed his life and he has returned to the fold 100%. Thank you Jesus and thank you Beth for allowing the Holy Spirit to use you through such an amazing Bible Study!

I still have my blue ribbon in my old Bible! The Old Rugged Cross - I have always loved this song! If any of you want to see an old rugged cross, drive over to The Bridge Fellowship in Sugar Land - 802 Brooks Street right off Hwy. 6. It is a beautiful tall stainless steel cross with scripture all over it. I call it "the old rugged cross."

And this last part is for "hisfivefooter" - sister - don't you ever stop your believing! I have written down your birthday for this Saturday, and I'll be in prayer for your husband! Happy Birthday sister! I prayed for my father for years and at the age of 84, he became a Christian! He is at home with Jesus now! God is faithful - don't stop believing and praying!

I'm wearing a blue elastic "pony tail" band right now as my Believing God reminder bracelet. I bought a pack of 'em awhile back after finishing the Believing God study. I take one out ever so often as I commit to pray and believe God for certain things. They really help me to remember to pray and believe each time I see it on my arm. It's amazing how wearing this little blue band has helped to deepen my prayer life. And it's a great testimony too when others ask me about it!
So thankful God gave the idea to Beth and she passed it along to us sisters.

Gotta love the blue stringy bracelets! I wore my frayed, tattered, lint-grabbing string for 5 blessed years. I got married in it (photographer tried to encourage me to take it off--he lost) It was on my wrist for the birth of my son. I had a "beloved" relative ask me why I was wearing trashy string on my arm and I refrained from inflicting bodily injury by doing my Believing God hand gestures. She now gives me a wide berth believing I have tics and twitches. So halleluJAH for blue strings and Gilgal moments! You have inspired me to tie another one on today!

Thank you Amanda for keeping us updated and also giving us "gems" to hold onto. Faith attached to the cross is powerful.
We did the Believing God Bible Study just a few months ago. I called LPM to see if anyone could give me an idea for the blue bracelets....I could have used some of those you found. So anyway, I ended up researching silicone bracelets, (no tassels), but the girls could wear them without the bracelets looking to worn. We loved our bracelets, as I had inscribed on them, "I'm Believing God". This was my second time through this study and I learned as much if not more this time. I find I can repeat the studies and just "keep on learnin'", like the Everready Bunny.
We will pray your volunteers each get a special blessing for helping with the move and making things run as smooth as possible.
Blessings & Prayers,

Love, love, LOVE, your ending analogy. Hangin' on by a thread, oh yes...

I lost a ring in a move one time. It was a very precious ring to me (though I have found little besides wedding/ engagement rings that rival the love you Aggies have for your rings -- gig 'em!) A friend suggested I pray that God reveal it to me. At the time, I thought that was the craziest thing I had ever heard. But I did it anyway. A few days later, moving a shoe organizer, I noticed something sparkling in the depths of one of the 'cubbies' for the shoes. There it was.

Praying He'll bless you with the desires of your Aggie heart!

(My Coffee Group just recently spoke in College Station in the AFC gym -- wow. That is an entire town built around a college obsession!)

AMEN!! If our faith is not attached to the Cross of Christ then we are headed for some trouble. He is the Author and Finisher of our faith!!

There has been alot of talk around here about "O" and her belief of many different ways - that Jesus was just one of the ways or paths. I felt overwhelmed to write this poem in response to her remarks about Christ not being the only way.

ONLY ONE WAY

THERE'S ONLY ONE WAY TO OUR HOLY GOD ABOVE
MANY PATHS THERE ARE NOT TO HIS GOODNESS AND LOVE
SOME BELIEVE YOU CHOOSE YOUR WAY - IT'S ANY ROAD YOU TAKE
THAT JESUS IS JUST ONE OF THE PATHS AND IT'S YOUR CHOICE TO MAKE

WOULD GOD SEND HIS ONLY SON IF THERE WAS ANOTHER WAY
THE SACRIFICE HE MADE WOULD JUST HAVE BEEN IN VAIN
WHY WOULD HE SUFFER AND DIE ON A CROSS
ALL THAT HE CAME FOR WOULD BE NOTHING BUT A LOSS

CHRIST SAYS THAT HE IS THE WAY, TRUTH AND LIFE
STAND ON THIS FACT WITH ALL OF YOUR MIGHT
IF WE BELIEVE WHAT HE SAYS IN HIS WORD
THEN CHOOSING ANY OTHER WAY WOULD BE ABSURD

JESUS ENDURED THE PAIN OF EVERY SIN THAT WOULD BE
TOOK IT ALL UPON HIMSELF SO WE COULD BE FREE
IT'S IN JESUS CHRIST ALONE THAT WE ARE SAVED
THROUGH ONLY HIM THAT WE CAN SING GOD'S PRAISE

DON'T LET THIS WORLD CONFUSE YOU
STAY GROUNDED IN HIS TRUTH
HE'S NOT JUST A FEELING
HE'S TO BE BELIEVED AND PURSUED

HE WAS, HE IS AND HE WILL ALWAYS BE
JEHOVAH, THE ALMIGHTY, THE KING OF KINGS
JESUS CAME TO BE OUR ONLY WAY
TO HAVE ACCESS TO THE FATHER - OUR PRICE TO PAY

God Bless and have a great weekend

Isn't it funny how God works out object lessons right before our eyes?

We did Believing God in the fall of 2003, after it released that year! I have blue braided yarn bookmarks still with blue glass fish beads for my Bible. I run across one every now and again.

I made a public statement about who is Lord in my life in February 2005 - mostly because I had become very educated about water baptism since my salvation in October 1982 when I was 12 years old. I wanted to bury all that was my past and walk in a brand new life as my pastor always says... I had never really made that committment before that day (and me a Women's Ministry Leader among other roles in my church, God is so Good!)

I pulled the picture off my room divider picture frame last night and found that, yes, tied to my wrist was the blue bracelet I was wearing during that early part of 2005 believing God for healing in my back - that is a praise report and another LONG story that I will withhold for the time being! And, I was believing God for answers to prayers about my son, who would go home to be with the Lord after an auto accident only 6 months later!

Yes, my sweet siestas and friends, Beth and her Bible studies have walked me through every imaginable aspect of my life.

I have recently begun to realize that God is drawing my dependence on Beth's teaching to a conclusion - because He is opening the door for me to step into a role where I will be imparting truth --- beyond that, I still intend to do her Bible studies... I have three left to do before I am totally out of "new" material.

I have a copy of Grudem's Systematic Theology on my china hutch/desk... waiting for me to crack the binder on my own discovery of truth and doctrine... I am so grateful to be able to still walk this journey with you all in such a new way! Be Blessed sweet friends!

Great analogy about our faith. We're a military family and have moved 11 times in 17 1/2 years of marriage. It seems like we always find something we thought we lost when we unpack. Maybe your ring is in an old coat pocket or purse. I've found a lot of "lost" things that way.

I'm so glad you found your Old Rugged Cross and that you reminded us that our faith is attached to the Cross! I have been looking for a Cross for our new home and will have to make sure we go to the Bluebonnet Festival next year after we are back in College Station! Fields of bluebonnets are one of my favorite things about Texas!

My prayers are that you will find your Aggie Ring! Maybe just in time for Aggie Muster! I know how special those are! (I had noticed in several of your pictures that you weren't wearing it!) My husband was the first Aggie in his family, our son graduated in '98 and all together-36 years after my husband got his-we now have 11 Rings in the family! So I hope yours is just waiting for a special time to show up.

How is Jackson adjusting to his new home? Has he rediscovered new toys he hasn't seen in awhile? Enjoy your new home and the new office "home"--it's incredible! During the summer tho, you may need to enjoy the gardens and patio real early in the morning.

Thanks for sharing!

Oh, as a fellow Aggie, I feel your pain on losing that ring! I took mine off once to clean (which I never did but thought I should try to take better care of my ring) and promptly lost it. I was heartbroken and looked high and low. I prayed daily that the Lord would just raise it right up from where ever it was hidden so I could find it! Months went by. I wondered what life lesson I needed to learn from misplacing such a treasure. Then I let it go. And then, while getting ready for a move, I found it. On the shelf of my closet under a box. How I managed to put a box on top of that ring I'll never know (and why did I take it off for "safe" keeping in my closet?? I laughed until I cried, got down off that step ladder and onto my knees and thanked God! I'm 6.5 months pregnant, my hands are swelling, and I'm NOT taking this ring off again! You'll find it. It'll be somewhere weird, but you'll find it.

I surely will be praying for the new "office". It looks like the kind of place that can inspire some wonderful Bible Studies.

I've had two of those blue bracelets. I have the bits and pieces of them, someplace. They are a great reminder to me and I was able to share with several people, why I was wearing a little blue braided string around my wrist.

What a great illustration for God to give! Isn't it amazing how when you are in God's word, you are so much more aware of Him? I love Him! Who is like Him?

On Monday, I pulled up in the driveway after picking up our 2 oldest little boys from school (K and PreK). I opened the van door and nearly stepped on a water moccasin! Calmly, I closed the door and called my husband on the cell phone. (He is a youth minister and so he has a day off during the week and happened to be in the house...Praise the LORD)!

I went on and on about how that snake had the audacity to crawl up on our driveway, not near the street as if passing by, but right near the garage as if planning to board for the night. I further declared that I had a very biblical basis for my hatred of this creature (Gen 3:15a). Quietly, Larry listened on the phone as he came out armed with a shovel, and quickly beheaded the vile beast.

We got all of the boys out of the car and let them see the snake. We went over rules of engagement and safety where snakes are concerned. As we were doing so, that wretched thing started rolling toward Larry! The head was about 1.5 inches long and there was still about 2 inches of body connected to the head. That little dude just rolled and flipped and stretched his fangs out trying to get to Larry.

Larry said, "There's Satan, cut-off and defeated. He's just rollin' right after us. Just a rollin'."

AMEN! This is response to "hisfivefooter" and the anonymous response.

God is so good. I have never done the blue braclet or the bible study but I have been praying for my daddy and mom since I came to know the lord in 02. Still praying that they come to know the Lord. I have struggled with addiction a couple of years ago and God healed me now on 3 1/2 years of recovery and recently had a scare with medical issues that the Lord absolutely healed. With all of this my daddy just keeps saying, "God healed my baby.!" I cry everytime I tell this story and think about it. He called me 3 weeks ago after I had been really sick and said that he wants to get a bible and asked me where he could purchase one. He said I have been thinking that God has healed you and I want to start reading the bible.! AMEN. GOD IS SOOOOOO STINKIN GOOD.

It is soooo good to see someone pray also for family and see them come to know Christ. NOTHING IS BIGGER THAN OUR GOD!

praying for all of LPM and volunteers. We love you all!

I too am in to throws of moving, we have been in the house for 2 weeks today (Friday). God has taken me and my husband on such a faith journey this past year and a half, really testing us. One thing I always say is everything needs to be measured against the back drop of the cross, and confirmed in scripture. I love this visual of the faith attached to the cross! I thought I would be divorced by now, not in a new house acting like a newly wed with my husband of 16 years.... God is great and great is His faithfulness... faith is the only thing that has got us here, faith that God knew what he was doing because we sure didn't..

thanks Amanda for a great visual of just where we really need our faith to be..

I have been involved in bible studies for three years now and I have done quite a few of Beth's I wanted to post this site as I was sickened at how this very influential person (Oprah Winfrey) of our time has perverted the word. I know a few christians who have read Toole's books and find them compelling. They are very anti-Christian and need to be exposed. watch this-

My "Believing God" bracelet is long gone!! I ,too, loved the ever present reminder to believe God. When life gets hard and things don't go my way, I KNOW I am not alone and there is a reason for everything - GOD knows - and I shouldn't need a bracelet to remind me. However, the bracelet also brought memories of this great bible study and the awesome things that took place. I saw Beth live for the first time during this bible study. So, a more permanent blue bracelet might be in order, like Emmy, just to bring back all of the wonderful memories of the study. I would love to visit and see the new "headquarters". Kerin

Amanda,
Great job painting the portrait with words! I've done Believing God and wore my blue braclet every day of the study. Folks at my work would just stare when I explained it to them; but, they'll wear a plastic one with a worldly-based sentiment without a second thought.
BTW - Wore the blue bracelet to a major job interview. Didn't get the job (God didn't want to enlarge my boundaries at that time), but they did stare at the blue bracelet the entire 3 hours! As I was leaving, one of the women got up the courage to ask what the blue string was about. She was amazed that I had the faith to wear that into a job interview and said she was going to go look up the Bible verse! Praise HIM!!!
Peace,

Amanda, you will find your ring one day when you least expect it. Years ago I lost my h.s. class ring and I was sure a certain person had stolen it. No doubt in my mind.

One day one of the drawers of my jewelry box would not close, something was behind it blocking it, I pulled the drawer out and there was my class ring.

Somehow at sometime it had gotten lodged and it did not block the drawer but over time it must have shifted. It had been missing for several years at that point, even went through a move!

I remember Believing God and although I dont' wera a blue bracelet I still mentally wear one.

Dear Amanda,
I loved your post. It is so much fun to discover mementos and items we have long forgotten or given up hope to find. One time in Brazil, a translator told me the gifts we recieved were a "remembrance" of this special time.

The student minister I work with at church is from Texas. He told be the bluebonnets in bloom are georgous.

The post reminded me how much the study, Believing God, has blessed my life. I have worn my tattered blue bracelet for nearly 2 years. Some time ago, I went through the study by myself. I shared with my pastor some of the lessons learned and he encouraged me to lead a group at our church. Finally, each Friday morning our early bird Bible study is about to finish the study. The four of us meet at six to fellowship and discuss what God has revealed in the past week's study. Each time through this study God has showed me something I missed before. It has been a glorious time.

I want to be a present-active-participle believer. I am not always successful but God is faithful to remind me to get up, dust my pants off, and keep following Him.

"I am the LORD your God, who brought you out of Egypt to be your God. I am the LORD your God.' " Numbers 15:41

Love you
Mary

Oh Amanda, how the Lord used you to touch me this day. Believing God and the blue bracelet were so precious to me. It was during this study that God called me to write the Girlfriend book -- I just didn't have a clue about all I would experience over the next 5 years. So much sorrow and so much joy. But all of it I will use for His glory.

I've clung to believing God! I know who I am in Him and I know apart from Him I can do nothing.
The blue bracelet hangs on my dresser as a reminder of His faithfulness.

Thank you for this precious reminder -- and I'm praying that you all have an easy transition.

Last night I dreamed I was your Special Assistant and that before you left to go to Bible Study, you asked me to fix your necklace and get you some bean dip to eat in the car!!

The beaded necklace had broken, so I put it together. It looked very ordinary until you put it on, then the necklace fanned out like a rainbow full of beautiful stones across your neck.

You grabbed your Bible, bean dip and "dish for the Potluck dinner" and...then I woke up!

Ah... the blue string! I love when I come across mine in my older Bible. I remember running up the stairs in a mad dash to find blue string for my husband to tie onto me before he left for work that day! I couldn't see the color very well, so God told me to hold it up to the sunlight! Like with everything else I was having trouble discerning... "Hold it up to the Son Light, baby girl!"

And I remember the day it finally fell off while walking and talking with Him, and the precious words God gave me of deep encouragement and profound love. The time I sat aside during those 40 (plus many) days, was so special! And I'm still reaping the benefits. It was the first time in my life that I knew I was never going to be the same again.

How really cool Curtis has one too. *smile* I love when things of God attatch me all the more to the man He chose for me!

Blessings to you and Curtis!

5.God's Word is alive and active in me

Amanda I just loved how you tied that all together and really got me thinking so here it is,......"At the cross, at the cross where I first saw the light"

"I will cling to the old rugged cross and exchange it someday for a crown"

How is it that He was beaten and bruised and took my stripes upon his back instead of me and then was nailed to an old rugged cross, so that ALL of my sins would forever be forgiven and I would be made the righteousness of God in Christ Jesus, and if that isn't enough, to top it all off HE gives ME a CROWN!!! But I love Jesus all the more for what he freely gives.

It is so true Amanda....EVERYTHING we have, every ounce of my belief system must lie in being connected to that Old Rugged Cross.

"Jesus paid it all, all to Him we owe!!!!!"

My pastor once said that "Jesus will be whatever you need Him to be whenever you need Him to be it, He will be!" Cry out to Jesus with all the needs of your heart, He will meet you in the midst of them.

Thank you sweet Jesus because without the cross I would be hanging on by a thread probably a blue thread but for WHAT??? There'd be nobody there to catch me when I fell!!!

(For Readers who have never received Jesus before- Are U ready?)
If you are not already clinging to the old rugged cross, my I suggest
you turn to Him now and experience the life that Jesus died to give you!! You will never regret it I promise!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Love you AJ, congrats on the new house!!!

I really grew through the Believing God study. It made me realize He was always there even before I was saved, molding and shaping everything around me! Just bought Denise Jackson's book "Its All About Him". She mentions Breaking Free. excerpt, pg 113 "We'd met in Jane's cozy family room, sitting in a circle, some of us dressed for the day, and some in sweats and no make-up. The casualness and security came from the long-standing bond that we had with each other. We went through a study called Breaking Free, authored by the wonderful Bible teacher Beth Moore. Each week our group would dig into sections of the Bible that focused on freedom. We'd talk about our struggles and the things that held us to earth and bound us tight. Then we'd sit in that chircle, hold hands and pray"...."But I'd always been an eager student, and the academic part of me loved studying the Bible and answering questions in the study guide. I had been spiritually dry for so long that I was dying for truth"....She was separated from Alan at the time and the study helped her. Their story is awesome and God just continues to amaze me!

I too went through the life-changing Believing God Bible Study four years ago. It coincided with the "reassignment" of my husband from his coaching position in a small town in the panhandle of TX.

So, I got him a book and we went through it again together. A couple of weeks into the study, Matthew was praying over a job posibility in Galveston, TX, during his morning run, when he passed by our neighbor's house at the end of our street. The night before they had erected a life-sized metal PALM TREE in their front yard! Now if that isn't God talking... :-)
So, here we are 4 years later reaping the adbundant blessings of God in the Houston/Galveston area.
To Him be the Praise,
Allyson

I was looking at the blue yarn bracelet on my arm and smiling as I read this blog today.

I am so pleased with this beautiful accessory and continue to wait for people to ask me why I have it. Alas, people must just assume I am crazy and asking may just confirm it.

On my other wrist I wear a lavendar, pink and white bracelet my 14 year old made me a year or so ago. I wear it just to remind me that she really does love me even when she tells me in not so quiet terms that I am the meanest mom in the world.

Believing God was my first study with you all and I loved it so much, I had to do it twice. I have a sneaking suspicion that I"ll do it several more times before I really get it. My group did a bracelet with 5 blue beads on it and i have it attached to my keys so that I'll always have it with me.
