Not a Sunny Day

*UPDATE FROM BETH*
No change, you sweet, sweet sisters. Thank you so much for caring. We've looked absolutely everywhere in both the car and on foot. I told Melissa about thirty minutes after I picked her up and she's looked obsessively for her ever since. I think you'll be blessed to know that she found two of my fellow LPM staff members looking for Sunny in our neighborhood, too, and in two different cars. That's the kind of people I work with. Sabrina, our director, almost couldn't pull it together today. Curtis tried to be really low key about the whole thing, not wanting to enter into the drama, then we found out he'd been out in the car looking, too. She's the kind of dog everybody loves.

We're making posters and putting them out tomorrow and at that point feel that we've done all we can do. I will definitely let you know how this turns out but I won't just keep on and on about it. In a world of rabid breast cancer and missing children, we'll try to keep our perspective. Thank you so much, Siesta, for mentioning her chapter in "Feathers From My Nest." That's one of the most fitting tributes to our fine dog that we have in print. One of our Siestas, Allison Ashton, painted me the most beautiful and perfect rendering of Sunny that you can imagine for my birthday last year then she had it matted in red and framed in black. It's the most precious thing ever. I have never loved a gift more. I'm so, so thankful to have it especially now. I love you, Allison.

Enough. Thanks for sharing my drama today. You are a wonderful community and you mean something to my life. Now, I'm going to go fix some comfort drinks (homemade hot chocolate with whipped cream) for Lis and I.

*UPDATE FROM AMANDA*
Mom wanted me to let you know that Sunny was not at the pound. We are hoping that she is just going to show up at the front door any time now. Please pray for Mom that she will be able to, in her words, pull it together. She is picking up Melissa from the airport right now. It's her first trip home since she moved and we don't want a cloud of sadness hanging over this sweet time with her. And in case this isn't clear, I want y'all to know that we do have perspective about this. Sunny is just a dog, but it's still sad to think about the loss of a furry friend. We love y'all! Thanks!

Hey, My Dear Siestas! I had planned to write you something funny today and share a few highlights from our trip to D.C. for the Esther intros and outros but something happened that took the funny right out of me.

My beloved Sunny dog is missing. When I got home from work yesterday around 5:00 PM, she darted out the front door. That's not at all unusual. The whole neighborhood knows her and she has some good dog friends she frequently visits. She's never been a dog you could confine. She will dig her way out of any backyard and shoot her way out of any open door. She was a stray sixteen years ago when she took up on my front porch. Our family has always teased that she was from the Order of Melchizedek because we never knew where she came from. Over the months that followed we became inseparable. During the worst season of my life, she sat right beside me while I bawled then would suddenly give my face what Keith and I came to call "the speed lick." You never saw it coming. Then I'd laugh really hard and she'd wag her tail. Mission accomplished.

She should have sauntered back within the hour but didn't. Keith and I drove all over the place last night then each got up many times during the night and looked out front for her. I put water on the porch because I knew when she came back she'd be thirsty. This morning, still no sign of her. Keith drove for over an hour this morning while I tried to get ready for work at home but bawled so hard, I couldn't get my make-up on for the longest. We really hoped that the dog pound picked her up but, so far, they say they don't have her. Keith is going to the facility as soon as it opens at 1:00 PM to see for himself.

I know this sounds silly to anyone who is not a dog lover but I am beside myself. She is my best buddy and is absolutely obsessed with me. She cries even if I'm temporarily out of sight. She follows me around, bless her heart, and sits wherever I do then sleeps right beside my bed where I can literally reach down and pet her. She is very old and I know she won't live a whole lot longer but I want to be right beside her holding her furry gray face when she finishes her job as the world's best guard dog and my most trusty friend.

I'll let you know what happens. We Siestas have shared a lot of life in the last many months and I thought you might as well know that your buddy is fit to be tied. I love you guys and I'll get you an update as soon as I have one.

Beth, I am so sorry you are going through what I know is a very emotional experience. The cat that we raised from a three-day-old, blind and abandoned kitten died a little over a year ago. In December, her son, who was my 7-year old daughter's beloved companion, left one evening to go out "catting around" and never came home. We put up reward posters, canvassed the neighborhood, and there was still no sign of Bob. I went to the animal control center here in Baton Rouge on my lunch hourevery four days (which is how long they keep cats before they are euthanized) from early December through the end of March, when the emotional toll finally got to me. My daughter still cries for him at night sometimes, but I know that God has been with us through this whole ordeal and that wherever Bob is, God is watching over him too. My prayer is that God will "guard your heart and mind in Christ Jesus" and give you His strength and peace to get you through this time. In Him, Laura

Oh I pray you find your Sunny! I have a Sunny too. Like yours, she was a stray that we found 9 years ago. She loves me so much that last week when I was very sick she would not leave my side! I can tell you the feelings are mutual. I would be devastated if something happened to her. I'm praying that even as I write this you are reunited with your 4 legged love. Many prayers from North Carolina.

I am so, so sorry that Sunny has gone walkabout.

Please don't forget to contact local vets, and put up flyers in the vets office if they will let you. Sometimes, if dogs are injured, a kindly person will take the dog directly to a vet rather than to the ASPCA or the Humane Society.

And when she comes home safely - microchip!

Beth, I will be lifting you up today. My daughter's cat, Mr. Kat, disappeared 3 days ago. It will break her heart as well. She was just baptised Sunday night at the age of 7. She has raised that cat since she was 2. She would literally put that cat in her doll stroller and make him sit there and let her push him around. My dog is the closest thing to a child that I have and when he gets sick or goes missing (which both has happened), it is so hard. They love unconditionally and show so much the love of our Father. Anyways, just wanted you to know that I am praying for you and for Sunny's safety and return! Proverbs 12:10 (a)! God cares for the one you care about...as you know...and He is all-seeing! I printed out fliers and put one in every one of my neighbors mailboxes....just an idea. Praying....

Beth,
I am so sorry to hear of your Sunny. I know the feeling. I had a Siberian Husky who was my child. She went through a lot with me when my husband and I were having tough times. She never left my side. She was a little mama to my girls when they were little, and loved to sit and "talk" to me after I would get home from a long days work. (She had lots to tell me about her daily adventures of watching TV while I was gone). I have never been a big dog person, and actually was mad when my hubby had bought this dog--little did I know how much I would need her in my life. I came home from work one day, let the dogs out and the kids and I ran to get a bite to eat. When we returned, she was gone. The back gate was open and she was no where to be found. The neighbors knew her--it was in her genes to run--.
I gotta say--I cried for days and days, and she was never found.
I like to think that she was like Pete's Dragon. She came to me when I needed her, and there was someone else who needed her at that time.
Possibly that is like Sunny. Sunny was there for you in times you needed her--it was time for her to be there for someone else.
I will be keeping you in my prayers. It isn't easy to loose our furry loved ones.

Beth, I have tears welling up in my eyes for you. I myself am not a particularly big dog lover, but oh how my daddy is. His dogs are his most treasured possession, and the big joke is is that he loves his dogs more than he loves his girls. My heart really does hurt for you, maybe not because I am a big dog lover, but because I have seen my dad go through so many ups and downs in his life (he is still not saved) all the while having his dogs right beside him - faithful friends to the end! I know my heart has hurt for him on occasion when he would have a dog go missing or he would lose one to death. I also have a little girl who loves dogs dearly. You know someone is a dog lover when they kill them on the lips, and that is my Ashley to a "T" She loves to be licked by them and loves kissing their lips. I pray you find Sunny. Please, please keep us updated. You will be on my heard and mind throughout the day. I love you!

Beth,

I think the worst is not knowing what Sunny is going through right now. I am praying that God brings you peace as you wait. I am praying that God will prove Himself faithful in however the circumstances come to an end. I am praying for you that as this points back to that fragile season of your life, you will see God's signature all over it and find a deeper rest than ever before.

I pray Sunny comes home and that you have the priviledge of walking her out of this world someday. But if she doesn't, your loving Father will walk her out of this world. You know the verse, He takes care of the lillies of the field. His heart is even filled with love for Sunny.

Thank you for letting us pray Beth,
Jina

Love you Beth,
Jina

Oh Beth! :( I JUST went through this yesterday and the day before and it is so wierd to read the same words coming from you on this blog. My old girl (11 yr old Golden Retriever) dug out and was gone for 17 hrs - apparently lost her collar - and I was beside myself just crying and not sleeping worrying about her. Thankfully some kind souls and fellow dog-lovers had picked her up, bathed her, fed her and put up signs in the morning that they found her and I got her back yesterday evening, praise God.

I'm praying the same for you - I KNOW how heartbreaking it is.

Dear Beth,

My heart goes out to you as I pray for your comfort and Sunny's return. My daughter experienced this kind of grief a few years ago when all of a sudden our little "pound dog" just ran off. Our Sweetie was gone for several days (which felt like months) and my daughter would pray and beg and mourn til she just could not do it anymore. As an only child, Sweetie was like her sister. They "shared" secrets and conversations that no one else was privy to be a part. Just as quickly as she left, she reappeared. My husband and I still wonder if our girl did not call Sweetie back from the grave. We thought for sure she was gone.

I pray your Sunny comes back safe and sound as well.

Dear Beth,

This past week has been a week of concerning news for me, and shock. A dear friend of mine from church was found dead in her home last week, leaving an 8 and a 6 year old child behind, which was shocking in itself, and two days later her husband was arrested for first degree murder, all the more shocking.

In addition, I got a call today from my mother to let me know that my sister's ultrasound showed two things: that she was having a baby boy, and that the boy has gastroschisis, which is where the intestines develop outside the body. Very concerning indeed.

And yet, when I read your blog right now, when I read that Sunny was missing, I still had room in my heart and mind to say, "oh my goodness!" outloud, and dropped the paperwork in my hand. Don't discount the importance of your best friend missing, my heart goes out to you and I am praying along with you that Sunny will be found, and quickly. There's nothing like not knowing, especially about our furry loved ones that need our protection, and be sure to update us when you can about the little guy.

We lost our beloved cat (17 yrs old) a few weeks ago. She never leaves the porch and she was just gone. I called and called and looked everywhere I thought. I got up about every hour on the hour and went out to the porch to call her name. I found her 3 days later in the shrubs on the side of the house, I grieved so hard to think she might have heard me calling her name and not able to respond. The hardest part is the night she disappeared she followed me to my car as I left for church and I dismissed her saying I'll take feed you when I get home. Never saw her again. I don't know if animals go to heaven, I think they have souls but not spirits, anyway, my sympathy goes out to you. Shalom

I have tears in my eyes for you. I know what you feel and I would be all our to sorts as well if my dog did not come back. I love my chief to bits and he knows it. I pray that God has his eye on your sunny and will be back home to lick your tears. That is what my chief does. Love you Beth your siesta in Christ.....

Dear Beth,
I am so so sorry about your sweet family member. I, too, am such a "dog person", and I know that it hurts so badly to lose one. I am praying that Sunny will find her way home, and I am praying for you and Keith as well.

I pray you'll find sweet Sunny! I read your Feathers From My Nest when I had my first baby 3 years ago and remember the story of how Sunny came to be yours. I know she'll show up again on your front step. Who knows, maybe she's off visiting a boy...
Blessings,

I am not an animal 'lover', more of a liker...but I do understand the emotions! We inherited our son's dog when he moved home a couple of years ago. She has since decided that she is my husband's 2nd wife! She drives me nuts!...yet she adds a fun dimension to our home life. I will be praying that Sunny will come home soon!

Beth, I got all choked up reading your post. I, too, am a dog lover. My (almost) 10-year-old white German shepherd Lily is adored by all who know her, but none more than her family. She is one special dog and it sounds like your Sunny is, too. I'll be praying that she finds her way home. Please keep us posted.

Love,
Mary Lee

Beth,

I am so sorry, I have had one of my pets do the same thing and it was heart wrenching. You have my prayers for sure and until this is resolved.

Love you right back.

Our pooch Max knows when we hurt, when we're sick, when we need some unconditional love. God was so good to us when he created and gave us this precious Labrador friend. We're praying for Sunny's safe return. Love you much.

I'm here in Germany crying and praying for you. My own sweet puppy just came up and licked away my tears. I completely understand what it's like to know the brilliant love of a dog.

Beth I am praying for you and for the safe return of Sunny. Those cute little furry faces have a way of getting into you and planting themselves deep in your heart, don't they! Their love is unconditional. I hope Sunny shows up at the door looking confused and wondering what the fuss is all about! :-)

I've often wondered if a dog's love isn't more pure than any I have ever known. You have to be a dog lover to get that, but I am praying for you, sweet Beth, for Sunny to come home, and for you to know somehow, no matter what, that she's okay. It's been crummy here today too--we'll smile again. Big Hugs to you and all the Moores, Annette

Amanda, that would explain why my comment is number 8 instead of 397. One man's curse is another man's blessing.

Our dog went missing a week ago...we were on the four wheeler, all four of us, loving for her. She finally heard the sound of it, I suppose...all of a sudden, she appeared in the yard. I did get to know some neighbors better, but it was quite an ordeal. Pray you find your precious.

Oh Heavenly Father,

Nothing is too difficult for You! Please bring Sunny home. Keep her safe and secure while she is away. Lord, You gave us animals originally as companions. You know how much we love our four-legged (or two) family members mean to us. I pray that You would comfort Beth and the Moores during this time. Give them strength to handle whatever the outcome of this may be.
In Jesus' name.

Beth, I LOVE animals and I feel your heartache. Know that I will be praying for you and Sunny.

My Cocker Spaniel of ten years just lost complete sight Easter weekend. He has been my faithful companion. He is getting around better, but I sure miss my walking buddy. I'm praying Beth, for the return of your Sunny. I cannot wait to see what these wonderful animals will be like fully restored in His Kingdome.

Praying for you and with you for Sunny's safe and quick return. My honey-bunches of oats, my buggar boy, my HONEY, my baby, ~ Mr. Gambler ~ was gone in an instant one day. A German Sheppard, Sable in color, loved me with all of his aching heart, and protected me from all manner of evil including bull-dogs and squirrels. He had hip dispasia, cateracts, and was over almost 13 years old when he disappeared (I got him when he was 5 weeks old). He saw me through those 'teenage' years as my best friend and bud. My then boyfriend and I drove all over the neighborhood calling out to him, there was a storm coming, I knew he would be disoriented and afraid (see now I'm crying again)- nothing. Late that night while cleaning up the kitchen from a somber meal looking at his bowl full of his favorite mashed potatoes, hotdogs, and chocolate syrup - the doorbell rang. Someone had heard me calling him earlier that day, happened to have been passing by a pond, and saw a dog that was struggling and could not get up the incline - they just thought maybe he was the one the broken-hearted person was calling for - AND HE WAS! Being the avid fisher-dog that he was (he had many times gone fishing with my boyfriend) he went down by the pond but couldn't get back out.

HOPE, in the Lord!
