My Mama Always Said
Yesterday I went to "Muffins With Mommy" at my son's mother's day out. We got to sit at his little table in the little chairs and eat little muffins together. We watched a video of the kids playing on the playground. They were having a blast going down the slide with their teacher. When I picked him up in the afternoon, I was given a gift bag that Jackson had made me for Mother's Day. I'm saving it for Sunday. Even if there's just a used Band-aid (as long as it's his) or a banana peel inside, I will love it. The bag alone is enough. Jackson's little hand print decorates the front and I couldn't help but kiss it. I was overwhelmed with the joy of motherhood. Drunk on younguns - my youngun - as my mama always said.
We will spend this weekend celebrating the women who have poured out their lives to provide for us in every way. We will send flowers, buy gifts, write heartfelt I love yous on greeting cards, and go to brunch. We will try to communicate our gratefulness and find that words just aren't enough. But our meager attempts sure do mean a lot to Mom. We will not forget to honor the women who didn't birth us, but who have loved us like their own. Women who, like my mama always said about herself, could mother a fence post.
To celebrate Mother's Day LPM blog-style, let's hear what your mama always said.

150 Comments:
My Mama always said: "Be nice and act like a lady" when I went anywhere. Years and years later, I still think of it when I leave the house. And my mother-in-law always says "________ (our last name) women don't iron." God bless her for that!
My mother had been a marine (back in the 70's when they were still "WM"s) before she met my dad (also a marine) and got married and had me. She used to march us to bed at night with this military march she learned in the Corp, we always were tickled pink. It went,
"Left, left, left right left
I left my wife and 41 children
home in bed
in starving condition with out any gingerbread
left, left, left right left."
Ok, I guess it's not that cheery at all, but for us it would make us giggle to march off to bed and hear our mom being our "drill sargeant".
This is making me smile, because my mother is not a believer and I have not always had the perfect relationship with her, but the Lord is working on forgivness and love towards my mother, and this is a wonderful opportunity to celebrate the good things, the happy memories, I have with my mom. Thanks so much and Happy Mothers day, ladie!

Sadly Mother's Day does not bring great memories for me.
My momma always said "You bring your own weather." I have found over my brief 26 years that is so true, especially when you know Christ. He is able to give us joy, hope, and "peace that surpasses all understanding" in any situation. And that is really all that is needed for a "sunny" disposition. My mom not only always said this, she has truly lived it through some very difficult circumstances. That is why she is not only one of my favorite people to spend time with, she is my hero as well.
Beth & Amanda,
My mother did not allow gossip or any kind of ugly talk about others in the house. As I approached the teen years, she would say before I left the house,"spit in the air; it will come back in your eye". I never forgot that. It sticks with me 'til this day. Happy Mother's Day!!
When I was having a bad day at school or when I got older and married and had a job and had a bad day, my mama used to always say, "This too shall pass" and give me that big hug and let my tears fall on her sholder. Now that my mama is at home in Heaven I miss those times. She died a month before my first baby was born and during those first few weeks of no sleep and feedings in the middle of the night those words would ring in my ears and I would just sit there and cry because I knew it to be true. It has been 9 years since my mama has been with Jesus and those words are still true to me today and yes they are passed down to my children.
When I was a teenager my mom always said, 'You play, you pay' and it used to crack me up - because you know I knew everything then. Now I realize how right she was, and how the reminder of that little saying often keeps me from sin. I sure miss my mom!!
God bless Beth and Amanda for their encouragement to us!!
My mom always said "please and thank you will get you far in life" and everytime I hear or say please and thank you.... I can hear my mom!
Just a couple of things she would say to me. "It comes to pass and not to stay." Now that I am in ministry, and feel the weight of it, I always remember this saying and to praise God through it. Also she used to say, "Come here you have a hole in your hair". God forbid that you have a spot not teased right.
This isn't about my mom, but I overheard a mom talking to her teenage son yesterday in the parking lot. He was telling her about a situation where someone would have been richer than Bill Gates if he had invested in such-and-such. The mom told him, "Money isn't everything." The boy spouted back, "But it can make life easier." To which the mom replied, "Not always. You know what brings real happiness? Livin' for Jesus!" I just smiled. Really, I wanted to hug her, but I was afraid she'd throw me down to the ground. Thank God for moms who aren't afraid to tell it like it is.
My favorite expression I've ever heard a mom say is, "This ain't my first rodeo, ya'll."
Love, love, love that one.
My mama always said: "Pretty is as pretty does."
It's silly really but there's just something about the way my mom says "You know sweetie, I just don't know what to tell you..." that really makes me feel better about whatever unsolvable problem I find myself in. And somehow within the next few minutes of conversation... mom has provided a brillant solution!
My mom is pretty amazing! oh and my other favorite 'momism' is this... "you have the right to your feelings but you don't have the right to take your feelings out on others"
My mother slipped off to Heaven on Christmas Day. Died peacefully in her sleep at age 85. One of her favorite sayings was 'Wake up and die right!' And I think she did just that. God bless you all with a Happy Mother's Day. If you can't hug your own mama, hug somebody else's.
I lost my mom to cancer 5 years ago. She was 54 and I was 25. I have very sweet memories of her and she is the one who introduced me to your precious mom. Although, I just in the past year and a half, have finally gotten to know your sweet mom's heart through her teachings. My mom led all of the Beth Moore studies at our church, that were in print before October of 2001. She loved it. I'm so thankful for the guidance she gave me.
My mom always said 'there is no slice of cake so thin that there aren't two sides'. Any time I was quick to judge she would say that. It just sticks in my head as I try to practice mercy. It has really been ringing true as I have now gotten to lead the Daniel study and When Godly People Do Ungodly Things at our church. Mercy is something that is starting to pour out of me. Thank you Jesus for using these wonderful moms to teach me this, your mom and mine.
My mom got to see her first grandchild. She had prayed and prayed for that. As soon as I knew I was pregnant, it's like she knew she didn't have long. My Liza Kate was 6 months old when my mom finally got to see Jesus face to face. My mom was an only child and then she waited 8 years to finally get pregnant with me. She prayed for me not to have any trouble. Then a year after she passed away, her prayers were answered yet again and I was expecting twins! They don't run in my family, until now. :) Her prayers run through my head a very frequently. She didn't get to see them answered here, but oh my, the blesses have overflowed from them.
I said more than you asked, but I love remembering my mom. Thanks for asking about her. :)
Happy Mother's Day to all!!
ma always said.."choose a date as you you would a lifetime mate."
married to mine now for 17+yrs. :)
My mom has never really had a way with words, but she is very good at UNDERLINING the words of others...like the card I just received in the mail a few minutes ago- the words that she really wants to emphasize are underscored multiple times (I think she got it from my Granny). I suppose you could say that instead of reading between the lines, I can read her love in the lines!
My mom rotated between two favorite sayings:
"God will get 'em."
and
"God will getcha!"
The first reminding me to always treat other with compassion, seek no revenge for myself, and not lament on the unfairness of life.
The second reminding me of the effect of my actions - whether I think anyone is watching or not, God is always watching, and He is the one I'm aiming to please!
I'm just as impacted with what my Mom DIDN'T say.
I've never heard her utter an unkind word about my Dad. She always built him up. Esteemed him infront of others.
And so, it was an easy habit to form in my own marriage.
Chris from Canada
My mama said "live and let live."
I just reminded my daughter of that the other day when she was complaining about her friends' actions.
Whenever my brother and I would irritate my mom she would always say, "I'm gonna take you down a notch or two"
To which we would respond by bending our knees and scruntching our shoulders trying to imagine what we might look like "down a notch or two".
...that always made her laugh :)
My mom always told me especially in relation to problems I was having with boyfriends at the time, that "what is meant to be, will be." It really helped me get through my teen angst. Thanks mom for all of your wisdom! <3
My awesome mom went home to be with the Lord eight long years ago. She said so MANY wise things, but the one I remember the most is, "if you don't have anything nice to say, don't say anything at all".
The other day I was driving my 11 year old to middle school, and she was telling me about a situation with some friends at school who were talking badly about one of her friends. She looked at me and said, "mom, I told them that my mom says if you don't have anything nice to say, then don't say anything at all."
I can't describe how I felt, it was like my mom's wisdom was being passed down, oh and yes, kids do listen sometimes.
HAPPY MOTHERS DAY!!!
Mary
My Mom went home to be with the Lord in 1998. I am trying to recall anything she "always said" but CAN'T! All I can see is her smiling beautiful face. I love and miss you Mama.
My Grandmother (Mother's Mother) used to say to me, "Smile when you look at me." I spent most of my teen years depressed and angry and she knew how to "reach" me with those words. And yes, I'd smile at her and my heart would feel comfort for just those few moments.
I use those same words on my boys when they are looking at me somberly while thinking about something else and they just crack up.
God Bless you Beth and Amanada
I put this on my blog yesterday and will share it with you because I am so proud to be my mother's daughter. ...and she ALWAYS told me "your are NOT everbody else" That used to so annoy me, when I wanted to do what everbody else was doing - but now - I KNOW that it shaped who I am, and I AM NOT EVERYBODY ELSE!! It's Mother's Day - and this year more than others I find myself thinking of my own mother. I have always thought of my mom as the original "Steel Magnolia" - it's what we love, admire and respect so much!! Soooo - looking up the definition of steel magnolia - it says - steel magnolias are know for their beauty, grace and charm as well as their resourcefulness and inner strength. This IS who my mom! She is 85 years old, still drives, teaches Sunday School, works in the prayer room at her church - which she has computerized, she still goes to art class and paints - she is painting a portrait of my youngest daughter, she IMs with me on the computer, does her banking and billpaying online, she cuts her grass with a push-mower, bags it up and hauls it to the road, she had been taking care of her sister one day a week until her recent death, she drives her friends to their doctor appts, she cooks and takes food for funerals of friends (at this age it is a weekly occurrence) she has come back from a broken hip two years ago (due to climbing up on a piece of furniture) - her attitude was that a new hip should be much better than the old one she had - she has been widowed twice - my dad, the love of her life, died unexpectedly when I was 13, and she was only 47. She raised my younger sister and I by herself - sent both of us to college. Her own mother was killed in an accident when she was only 8 years old. She lived through my dad spending years overseas during WWII, several of those not knowing what was going on with him after a serious injury. She lived through my older brother spending three years in VietNam. She has such inner strength - and where does that come from - her FAITH - her lifelong belief in her God and Christ. She has spent so much of her life on her knees praying for me and my family, my sister and her family, my brother and his family. Her Bible is worn and full of notes...years of faith and believing the promises. Several weeks ago, she attended the Beth Moore conference with my daughters and I. I am sure she was one of the oldest women out of that group of 17,000 women. It was difficult for her to climb up and down the steps of the Carolina Center, but she did it - THE BLESSING OF SHARING THIS WITH THREE GENERATIONS WAS BEYOND MEASURE!! So on this Mother's Day, I thank my God for the gift of Miss Pearl aka MeMe aka MeMaw, a true steel magnolia, and I pray to my God that I may one day be just half the steel magnolia that she is!!
My mother always said, "That's just the kind of hairpin I am," whenever expressing an opinion. When my sister and I are together shopping, one of us will inevitably say it and we get tickled.
Oh, Oh, and one that my mother in law says, which is precious. She says, "You got kids, you got nothin' else." This is said when a kid breaks or destroys something. The thing is, she says it was a huge smile and it's just a loving way to tease.
I remember I told one person about that one time an she got all seroius and offended-looking and said, "well, I wouldn't want anything else." She didn't get it...

Thank you 'Moores' for being a blessing to us!~
My favorite things my mama says:
Pretty is as Pretty does.
You catch more flies with honey.
All it needs is a good pressin' (ironing!)
My Mom always said, "wear clean underwear with no holes in case you're ever in an accident". Not exactly profound, but I never forget it. A friend's Mom told us, "always wear lipstick. It makes you feel pretty even when you don't want to." I wear lipstick (and clean undies with no holes) every day. Just in case.
My mum would always say, "Now, don't be like that string-bean neighbor who doesn't have the brains God gave a rubber goose!" I always would just laugh at her and the bad moment was gone. I actually caught myself saying that to my son this morning. He gave me the same reaction I used to give her....
Just like anonymous, my Mama (and Gramma) always said, "Pretty is as pretty does."
They also said, "it's just as easy to fall in love with a rich man as a poor man," but I didn't listen to that kernel of wisdom. And neither did they, so there you go.
"...could mother a fencepost." Yes, maam. That's me, too. :) Love it!
My mother had and has so many sayings.
But there are a few that just stick.
"You are who you are at home"
"Every where you go--there you'll be"
"You are responsible for what you do no matter what anyone else does"
Growing up he made me think about the real me--and, yes she still does.
It was my nana who said...
"Love Him first and there will always be a light shining in the darkness."
When one of us or one of the kids would get hurt, she'd cry out, "God love it!"...and she meant exactly what she said...and she had pet names for all us girls...probably because she couldn't keep us straight in her head!! She called the babies "Chuga-bunny", and sang "Will There Be Any Stars In My Crown" to them...and the answer is, yes, Momma, a whole gob...but you know that now, don't you??
my mama had lots of good southern advice and sayings.
LOTS.
and LOTS...
but for some reason the only one that is coming to mind is: "ALWAYS wear clean underwear. You never know when you might be in an accident."
ROFL... I'm sure she'd be so honored to know that that is what I am currently able to recall...
Blessings to you both and Happy Mother's Day!
Karla
My mom always said growing up, "Pretty is, is pretty does." Which meant we were only pretty if we were pretty on the inside. Outside appearances did not make us pretty. She also used to tell me, "Pride cometh before a fall." And it literally did! One particular Sunday when I was in Junior High, I was running out the door for church, thinking that I looked especially pretty and acting a little vain. I fell down right before I got in the car, got muddy, and tore my skirt. I have never forgotten that lesson-for me pride does come before a fall :). I love my mom and the Godly heritage she has passed on to me. I am very blessed!
There are so many that come to mind but the one that I find myself now repeating to my children is "I can tell where you've been. You leave a trail - dirty dishes, shoes, Kleenex." God bless her she never said it in an angry voice but it was SOOO true. She's amazed that as soon as I got married I turned into a neat freak. I think she was convinced I'd always be a slob.
My mom often says, "we've got more time than money." She said her Dad used to always say that. Now, I say it sometimes, too, but despite the bank balance, chasing my brood of five makes me wonder which I really do have more of ...
Happy Mother's Day. :-)
My mom always said, "Tell me with whom you walk and I'll tell you who you are."
It helped us choose our friends wisely.
Missy
praying for the living proof event this weekend!!
One thing my mom always told me was that i would argue with a fence post. And do you think I just fell off the turnip truck? What was that about?!?!?
It's not so much what my mom said, but what she did. Growing up a preacher's wife with four daughters, times were tough for many, many years. She was/is the model pastor's wife (going on 50 years!!)....a true Proverbs 31 woman. She would cook a roast with all the fixin's for Sunday lunch and we'd have it again for dinner with sandwiches. She would make a pot of beans and have cornbread and we'd have bean tacos the next meal. On and on I could go about her wonderful cooking. She had a rough childhood herself, but she was determined to be a lady and to teach us girls the same. She taught us manners and to always say "thank-you."
The thing that I love the most is that my mom loves to listen to me and listen to my stories and to hear what's going on in my grown childrens' lives. She is definitely a person who has wisdom and someone I can totally trust.
Oh yeah, and we travel to a Beth Moore conference at least once a year together....you know, an excuse to travel. :)
I am blessed and thankful for my mom!
The two things I carry with me are not things my Mama said.
Instead they are: my Mama had time for me and my Mama loved to laugh.
It's my husband who comes up with all the sayings. I'll save those for husband's day. :)
I was the only girl among three brothers. My Mom always dressed me in pink and had me sleeping in sponge rollers at night. I was her princess. She always said to me, "It doesn't matter how pretty you are on the outside, if you're not pretty on the inside". She was, and still is, the best mother ever. When I woke in the morning, I would find her on her knees, praying. What example could be better than that? I hope that I make my son feel as loved as she has always made me feel.
My Mama always told us to "listen for the trumpet"--meaning the day Jesus would come back. One day that was a loud siren at the chemical plant where my Dad worked there in town. We thought it was the trumpet. So, my brother and I ran and hid under the bed. Now when I hear the trumpet I will be looking and ready. Your blog is just wonderful!!!!! Thank you so much. Elaine

Mama always said...
"Remember who you are and Whose you are!"
Beth, I feel like I need to wish you HAPPY MOTHER'S DAY because you have been such a spiritual mother to me over the past 9 years. 9 years??? How can that be??? I remember the first time I saw your face and heard your voice on the videos to A WOMAN'S HEART. Changed my life, I tell you, getting to know God in such a deep, deep way. I'm still not over it!!
Amanda, I just can't tell you how I've loved hearing your heart come out in this blog. Since your mother is one of my spiritual mothers, we indeed are SISTA'S!
Love and blessings,
Dori
My mother, a native of Paragould, AR, has many famous sayings...when someone can't locate an item, she will say,"He couldn't find his rear end with both hands!" Another one of my favorites has been,"my ears are naked!!" which is always said with great horror when she realizes she forgot her earrings!
I am graduating from nursing school tonight and from Southern Nazarene University tomorrow morning and celebrating my mother and grandma's on Sunday! This is going to be one busy weekend!!! But I was talking to my mom late the other night and we were remembering the past few years of my life that have been consumed by nursing school! With each and every test I took, I would tell my mom and dad about it and they would write in their planners and I always knew they were lifting me up during that time. There was one time in particular a few years ago when I was completely scared to death about failing and the devil was really telling me I was not capable of being successful. After my test I got my phone out of my purse and had a text message from my mom...the only one she's ever sent!!! And it said Isaiah 41:10...in my mom's special way!
"do NOT fear my sweet jillian
He is with you.
He has called you by name.
He is your GOD!
He will strengthen you.
And help you!"
That message is still saved and locked in the inbox of my phone! :) As I celebrate this accomplishment, I know it is only possible because of my sweet, prayerful mom!!!
I don't have any real memories, except for her telling me to get high, that it will get me through life. That's the memories I have.
Beth, have a wonderful Mothers day, you too Amanda
Great words...momma a fence post...that's hysterical!!
It's not so much what my mom said as what she didn't say or what she did. She stayed strong and silent in times of pain and hurt and I admire that greatly. She has certainly taught me to tame my tongue in that regard. She always honored her mom and her mother-in-law and I admire that about her too...
My mother-in-law tells great and fond stories of times gone by and how the way things used to be in the local town where she grew up...she has seen a lot with her own eyes and lived to tell about it. She made my man the sweetest, most gentle lover of Jesus. Praise God for godly women.
When Mom and I would go shopping and she'd buy me something, when I said "Thank you," she always said, "Thank your Father." May we all remember to always thank our Father!
Kecia
Hi. When disciplining us and teaching us how to treat others, my mother always told us something HER mother always told her... "I will always love you and like you no matter what, and I discipline you because I want others to love and like you as well."
My momma always said "It'll get better before you get married" for any boo-boo, any hurt, any childhood drama. Strangely, it was always comforting. My mother is an amazing woman who never spoke unkindly about my dad, not to anyone- that's her legacy to me. She was also a little zany- when I didn't want to eat my veggies she always said, "They taste like M&Ms!" So not true! Happy Mothers Day to all even those without good memories. In His wisdom, God gave us glorious motherly examples(Hannah for one) to celebrate in His Word. Allow His Word to heal any "Mother's day" wounds. Grace and peace in Jesus! Kim in Pa
My sweet wonderful mother used to say many many things that I would give anything to hear her say again. She has spent the past 5 years in a nursing home suffering with Alzheimers. She is in the last stages, no longer communicates, and has not known any of the family who loves her so dearly for several years now. I could not begin to share all the things she would say to my sister and I, but the one I remember the most and have said numerous times to my own girls as they were growning up is this one that she would say anytime we left the house with friends, on a date, or anywhere..."Remember who you are and who's you are!" She meant for us to remember that we represented our family but more importantly that we belonged to God and that we better act accordingly!
This is some about my grandmother. She had all kinds of little 'dittys' we call em. When we would spend the night at her house before going to bed she would say...
"To bed to bed, said sleepy head.
Wait! said slow.
Put on the pot. said greedy gut;
let's eat before we go."
This was usually followed up with a dish of cereal, or ice cream, or a fresh cake she had made that day. Ohh I can smell it baking right now!
I have so many wonderful memories of my grandmother.
Ma' Mama always said:
Don't drink, don't smoke, don't chew, or go with boys who do.
HAPPY MOTHER'S DAY to ALL you Mama's!

My wonderful mom is waiting for me in heaven, but these are some favorites that still live on...
"Let me put your hair in pigtails and you'll feel like a million bucks."
"Never call a boy. Boys like a challenge."
"Look at the bright side...."
"Go ahead, say something funny." (After introducing me to someone new - which confirmed in my young heart that I really was funny)
and last but not least...
"Don't forget to put lipstick on"
Thanks Amanda for asking the question--I'm picking up gems to start with my children!
My mom always says "If in doubt, don't" when we were waffling about a decision. Often what I was not sure about was a check in my spirit to wait and see or choose another way. A while back I heard Oprah say it and I thought "When did she talk to my mom?"
"Watch out honey...because that devil he never sleeps..."
My mom said "Be good, or at least think of it yourself." Everytime I walked out the door to hang out with friends.

When I had delusions of grandeur of how exciting my adult life was going to be, my mom would give me this reality check: "No matter who you are or what you do, it all comes down to scrubbing toilets." Whatever chore you choose to insert into that maxim, it's true: no matter how important we may think we are, at some point, we all have to knuckle down and do the non-glam work we don't really want to do. I don't think I believed her then at all, but now I tell my daughter the same kind of thing! And she's only 6!
Mine always told us that whoever we swore we hated "will have the mansion next door to you in heaven." In other words, learn to get along with believers of all stripes, because you will live with them for eternity. Next door, apparently.
I don't have kids but I have an 11-year-old boy who lives with me, and the other day he answered my phone and it was his teacher, who is my good friend. "If you're going to answer her phone, you need to sound like her," she teased him, to which he immediately responded in a bubbly voice, "Hello, sunshine! What's up, cheeky monkey?" We about died. He had me dead to rights. He *is* my cheeky monkey.
Sadly Mother's Day doesn't bring great memories for me either...
To make it worse I am 37 and still long for a child of my own. I can't imagine what the feeling must be like to have those big eyes look up and call you Mommy.
One of us kids would drop a breakable. Upon hearing it, mom would calmly state in a monotone voice from another room, "Save the pieces."
Okay, so it's not all mushy or heart warming, but it does remind me to check my patience level.
Happy Mother's Day to all mothers; those raising biological children, those who have adopted, and those who have made adoption plans as birthmothers.
Blessings,
~Toni~
Adoptive mother of 4.
My mother said many thought provoking things. The one at the top of my list is "Lies make babies"!!!!!!
I could not pick out a phrase that my mom has always said but she is one of the funniest mothers on this earth. She has brain cancer and can't communicate like she used to and it takes her awhile to get a word out but my mom has the strongest faith of anyone I know. When she is going through hard times or when we, her children, are going through hard times she always tells us to rebuke the enemy and trust God to work it out. She gives God the glory for everything and their isn't much that can get her down. She can't do much but the things she loves to do is watch movies, watch the Food Network and read her Bible. She always lets us know that she has prayed for us. I have inherited her strong faith.
Happy Mother's Day Beth and Amanda to all the Sistas, have a great weekend!!
Love,
Patty
Sadly, Mother's Day doesn't bring joyful memories for me regarding my mother, but my Grandmother was a huge source of joy in my life growing up. She had lots of sayings, but one that really sticks in my mind is, "a whistling girl & a crowing hen will always come to some bad end."
That was her way of telling me to be a lady at all times.
Thank you Grandmother - I love you!
I can't wait to see you when I get to Heaven. :)
Blessings & Love for a Happy Mother's Day Beth & Amanda!!
My mama had 2 famous sayings
#1 Pretty is as pretty does.
#2 Dont you get caught anywhere you wouldnt want to be when Jesus comes back.
Even though I have two preschool boys, I plan on using both of those sayings - #1 for girlfriends and # 2 for my boys.
Mother's day is so precious to me, particularly because my birth was unusual. I was conceived while my birth mother was having an extra marital affair. As she desperately sought ways to get rid of me or give me up, my adoptive mother was desperately praying for a child of her own that she could not conceive due to medical problems.
Once my mom came to grips that adoption was her only option, and decided to begin the process she came across someone who shared my birth mothers situation. Without 9 months to plan, God put me in my mothers arms after a short few weeks. God is amazing!
During my ugly attitude teenage years I gave my mother very hard times. During times when my mother needed re-enforcement in Motherhood (with my ugly attitude) I remember her statement to me was always this: "God gave me this job and He never told me I could quit." It was a statement that I could never argue with. I am forever grateful for a mother who loved me unconditionally and as her very own.
I praise you LORD for my precious mother!
My mother always said because I said so, I knew she meant it. She also would ask if I was wearing a slip, knowing I would go back to my room and to put a slip on under my dress or school uniform. How I wish mothers today would tell their daughters to wear a slip!
My mother is slipping away due to Alzheimer's...but we both know our Lord God Yaweh is much bigger than any thing that satan sends our way.
We are standing in faith and prayer for total healing.
Annette
My Mama likes to say "I may have been born at night but, not last night!" can never pull one over on her. She's the mom with the eyes in the back of her head and boy do I love her!!
"For cryin' in the salad!"
You gotta love it, but seriously, what does that mean?!
THATS what she said (and still says to this day!!)
Happy Mothers Day! :)
I can't even believe I forgot to mention:
"If Mama ain't happy, ain't nobody happy."
This is practically our family motto, three generations later.
My favorite one Mom says:
" I love you. You'll always be my baby".
HAPPY MOTHER'S DAY SISTAS!
My mom is 92 and has been a lifelong treasure to me.
When I was little I told God I wanted to be just like her. As an adult I realized how hard her life had been but by that time I understood it was worthwhile because of what God had done in her.
She has told us over and over of times when it looked like there was no way through difficult circumstances and God provided for her beyond anything she could imagine.
Her tactful way of telling me how to behave around others was "You know I'LL ALWAYS love you - but I want other people to like you too!"
When she was surprised (and being silly) she'd say "My goodness, gracious, sakes alive, land 'a livin' Peter Rabbitty!"
Probably what made the biggest impression was when I'd wake up early, come out to the living room and see her on her knees in front of the big chair.
Thanks Mom .. and Thank You LORD.
My mother always said, "It's not a meal if you don't eat something green." She was a home-ec major and always pushed the green vegetables. She also told us to be sure we had on clean underwear if we went out anywhere. Not sure why...but still, good advice.
My Mom used to tell us kids "You can't get to heaven on my apron strings!" when we were being bad. I always took that as a warning that I'd best mend my ways!
One of the nicest things she ever told me was when I was a young teen and heard that babies could actually be "planned" or "unplanned". Since I was #7 of 8 kids, I had a pretty good idea I was one of the "unplanned" ones. When I questioned her, she told me that even though she hadn't really "planned" any of us kids-- she was always THRILLED each and every time she found out she was pregnant. That was a good enough answer for me!
My mom is a strong, strong woman of faith, and even though I belong to a different church than the one she raised me in, I think I've finally convinced her we still worship the same God! Happy Mother's Day all you sisters out there! Ain't it great?
My mother always said when we were hungry and LOVED the meal we were eating, "Well, you know the secret to good cooking? Get 'em good and hungry."
And when we were in a situation that was less then what we had planned for she'd say, "This is what memories are made of."
And when we'd ask her for something and she said "no" and we'd say "why?" her response was always "Because I'm a mean old grumpy weasel"
My mama always said-and still says: "I'm putting THAT in my heart and pondering it." I wish you could see "the look" that goes with that phrase. The two together could make you reconsider whatever foolish nonsense you'd said or did. As a teenager, I was completely taken aback when I realized that she had gotten the phrase from scripture -Luke 2:19.
Kathy
Mama always said: you don't get a do-over in this life, so make it a good one.
Mama always said: sometimes you have to fake being happy, and then before long, you realize you aren't faking it anymore.
Mama always said: it is better to be happy, and money can't always buy you happiness.
Mama always said: You are a much better parent BEFORE you have kids.
Amen.
My mom used to say "you kids quit lolly-gagging around" when we were not acting in a timely manner. She has always been quite funny with her own unique vocabulary and she's Arkansan to the core. She always told us "I love you" at bedtime, every night. Even now she will say it on the phone whether it's an hour or ten minute conversation. Though she has never had a real strong walk with Christ she has always been so proud of my sister and me for "trustin' in the Good Lord" as she would say.
"You have had too much fun!"
(Usually said to a tantrum-throwing toddler or a whining gradeschooler or a weeping teenager.)
I can still hear it to this day, "Keep your legs down and fix your skirt." I still love to prop my legs up.
my mother always told us to go outside and "get the stink off our bodies"! Years later, I have said that to my children and their friends. Yikes! I realize now that my mom was sick of us making a mess inside (even though we had to clean up after ourselves) and therefore was trying to make us tired by sucking up all that fresh air!
Amanda,
I struggled with this one. I don't have any loving memories of my mom's sayings. I finally came up with this one: My mom would always say - "Be Happy". But after I became a Christian I realized that there is more in life than to be happy. I'd rather be His.
Mother's Day is really hard when you don't love your mother. I try to honor her and call her once a week. It's tricky. When I had kids I was so afraid that we would repeat the relationship that I have with my mother. I am thankful to say that my daughters and I are very close.
This response is too painful to sign. But I do wish you and your mom a happy Mothers Day.
"It's not what you say, it's how you say it." My mom so wanted me to be a compassionate, humble and empathetic woman. I have followed her wonderful example and remember her wise words every day!
My mom always said I'd have one just like me (I've always been very independent and outspoken). True to her word, I have one quiet, shy, tenderhearted young man Ijust like his dad) and one very vocal independent young man. I wouldn't have either of them any other way. Mother's Day has for the last 12 years been bittersweet in our family. My dad went home 12 years ago today and we miss him still. Happy Mother's Day to all of you
Remember who you are.
My mom would always tell my 3 sisters and I that "God is the Blessed controller of ALL things",even the times that we didn't particularly want to hear that.
I remember rolling my eyes and sometimes walking away saying, "I know, I know!!"
But I have never forgotten that and to this day I continue to tell myself and my 3 kids that "God is the Blessed Controller of ALL things!
Thank you mom for your godly example and influence you have made on my life and the lives of my children!
Happy Mother's Day to all!
I am sitting here laughing and crying over all the comments. My mother went home to be with her Lord and Savior, Jesus, 5 years ago and I miss her so very much.
Some of her sayings were:
"Land a goshen", "Good gravy", "If the creek don't rise", "Heaven's to Betsy", "Idle hands are the work of the devil".
What I will always remember more than those silly sayings is that my mother taught me to love Jesus. Most times when I would visit her, she would be doing her Bible studies and we would spend hours talking about what she had learned. My brothers and sisters and I now have notebook after notebook filled with her study notes. What a legacy!
I miss her very much!!! I still catch myself wanting to call her when God reveals to me another insight into who He really is and who I can be if only I would let Him.
My mama was a fan of "Pretty is as pretty does." She advocated being a lady and showing you had been taught to mind manners, never show your cleavage, keep your dress down... that kind of stuff... My gramma always said, "Every tub sits on its own bottom." meaning we must mind our own business and allow others to do so, as well. She always told me to pait something red if I felt bad, and she loved the motto, "Little bit do good, whole lot do better." especially when it comes to loving.
My momma always said "because I said so." i tried really hard not to be that woman, but I have turned into her by 39. I pray I won't say it too many times to mine.
Nothing profound, my mother always said, "Chin in, it will give you good posture."
I was a very nervous little girl. Mama told me whenever I was afraid just keep repeating out loud, "I belong to Jesus, devil you cannot have me." Powerful and present in my life daily.
to others:
"you can mess with me, but you better not mess with my youngun."
to me:
"remember Whose child you are."
to me:
"the Bible says that we are overcomers in ALL things. it does not give an exception for pms."
during frustrating times:
"are we having fun yet?"
anytime anyone is away from home feeling sick, hungry, or thirsty:
"do you need a peppermint?" (she always has a stash in her purse. she apparently believes they are a cure-all.)
MAMA, I LOVE YOU A BUSHEL & A PECK & A HUG AROUND THE NECK!!!!
My Mama Told Me. . .
Just eat one bite (veggies, of course)
Be careful
Not everything in life is fair
I love you
Pretty is is pretty does
John 3:16
My multiplication tables (while I sat on the kitchen counter and she cooked dinner)
Tell me about it
You’re so beautiful
Do your best
I love you
Don’t even think about doing it (whatever it was at the time)
It’s not too late
Thank you, sweetie
God provides
You can accomplish anything you want
Don’t settle for less
I love you
Don’t touch anything. It might break (as it crumbled in my hand)
You’re so sweet
You’ll be fine
Take responsibility for your actions.
I love you.
And I tell Mom today. . .
Thank you, I love you miss you more than words can convey!
happy Mothers day I am not a Mother and I have no children. So Mothers day is difficult for me. Pray for your sisters in Christ that might be a little sad.
oh yeah, always wear lipstick...one of the last memories I have of my mom was her taking off her oxygen mask to put on lipstick--now there was a lady. Thanks to you all for making my day--your moms and mine have wisdom and thank the Lord, a funny bone!
rzzbYep, sunglasses and lipstick go a long way. . .Love this post. It makes me smile and be grateful.
My mom (who stresses and worries about NOTHING.....and is just plain wonderful) always said to me, "You can drive through pity city, but you better not park." Everytime I begin to complain or something, I just cruise right on through pity city! LOL!
We moms sure are drama queens, aren't we!
My mama always said "Wear clean underwear, you never know when you might have to go to the hospital." But on a more serious note she always told us to never go anywhere of do anything that we couldn't have Jesus right beside us.
The thing that stuck with me the most and still serves me well is 'When in doubt....DON'T'. She taught me that the moment of the second-thought just before an action is often the Holy Spirit giving guidance. Whether it is something I'm about to say, somewhere I'm about to go, something I'm about to buy, or someone I'm about to spend time with...if I have that last second moment of doubt, I don't. I've learned that usually it's something I would have regretted. If it's something God is wanting, I don't get that 'doubting' moment and instead feel the insistent urging that can't be denied to go ahead and then feel blessed by following through.
Love you Mom! :)
Cristie
when i graduated from highschool both of my parents left this on my yearbook page...
..remember WHO you are and WHOSE you are..
I asked my own kids what I always say, just to see.
Here it is.
You always say-
"Quit that now, someone's going to end up crying!"
Am I a spiritual leader on the order of King Solomon's mother, or what?
My mother:
"Being poor is never an excuse to be dirty." (When it was time to clean my room)
"If you're not careful, your face will freeze like that." (After seeing the scowl on my face)
"Beauty is on the inside" (Daily mantra)
"Don't work too hard" (Never have understood that one)
"Well, I'll swan!" (An acceptable way to say I'll swear!)
My mother-in law:
When any female of any age is the least bit frustrated or annoyed with her "man":
"Always remember, the good Lord just put different faces on them so that we could tell which one is ours"!
I am thankful for the both my mother and my mother-in-law. This post has helped me go back to look at some special memories.
Here are what I call "motherisms" (things my Mama used to say and still does):
"She is happy as a clam at high tide!"
"First we are good Christians in our community, then good wives and mothers and always remember you are a lady and you represent your father and me when you are in public."
"Always wear good underwear. You never know when you may be in an accident and they will have to cut your clothes off." Sadly, this happened to my sister, who lived to tell the story! Praise God!
As a bride she told me, " These are the things the ladies in our family don't do: We don't clean anything caught or shot. We will cook it and eat it, however. We do not mow the lawn. We do not iron. And we do not carve meat."
Happy Mother's Day, Beth and Amanda! Happy Mother's Day to all other mothers, too!
Yea! I finally thought of one:
"WATCH YOUR FOOT" - Interpretation: Be careful & don't get a ticket driving :)
she also always made us put on rubber soled shoes during a lightning storm :)
My mother always mixed up quirky little sayings like "Shoot a monkey." She always told this story about her childhood and ended it with, "I swore my kids would never live like that." We never did. Our mother was as Daddy lovingly puts it, "Chief cook and bottle washer, chauffer or taxi cab driver (depending on her mood), secretary, financial wizard, launderer and dry cleaner, babysitter, referee, teacher, wife and friend." He had a lot more, but at the moment I could not recall them all. She recently served on jury duty and had my father fill out her job description - you see he retired a few years ago and in my dad's loving style he told his work not to give him a "retirement gift" unless they honored her with one as well because she was the reason he did his job so well. He could not have done it without her. I laugh now even thinking about his retirement party - they spoke of my dad, but also commended my mother and her homemade dishes she sent for the crew potluck meals and the way Daddy always bragged on her to them. I was honored and blessed - they received two oak "cracker barrel" porch rockers for their gift. We had a little shin-dig later that week where we honored them with a funny little bit. I gave them many gifts, including my father an Elvis Wig and Sunglasses along with a big floppy King's hat. We had him put it on and laughed because my mom was crazy about Elvis, we told her now that dad is all gray she could just picture him in that Elvis wig. I gave them all sorts of stuff that had hilarious meaning, but it was later when we presented them with their gifts that Mom was honored. My brother gave my dad a $100 home depot gift card, but I was in charge of mom's gift. I purchased her an elegant jewelry box from "Things Remembered" and had her initials engraved on it. Then I bought her a smaller keepsake box of gold and ruby colored gemstones. It had a huge heart in the middle with Proverbs 31:28 inscribed upon it. But, the best part was a Plaque for her to hang on her wall with "In honor of 35 years of dedicated service as Wife and Mother to Sandra J. Newsom from her children, her husband and her family." She has hung it lovingly alongside my father's service plaques at our family home. She treasures it more than anything we've given her because it said thank you when we missed so many opportunities before. Happy Mother's Day, Mom!
Blessings, Michelle - Fort Worth
I have never read so many comments on a blog in my life. I have loved reading every one of these (and have posted two of my own already!) and am laughing out loud the whole way. I hope this post goes to 200 comments, and we can all enjoy all of this motherly wisdom!

Am I too late?
My mom always said "Engage your brain before you engage your mouth".
Still have to watch that one...
Happy Mom's Day, ya'll!
Although I can't repeat most of what my mom used to say one thing I can is, "If it's worth doing - then it's worth doing right!" BUt my favorite and most valuable saying came from my spiritual mama. She advised me to enjoy my children for they are a GIFT from God. She also told me to treat them with repsect for they are a gift from GOD. And lastly, because they are a gift from God, find ways to always say 'yes' so that when you have to say 'no' it means something. I have been so blessed and so humbled by my 'gifts'! (I have been blessed by many things over the years doing Beth's bible studies, but what has blessed me the most is finding that Beth is just as head over heels about her girls as I am with mine. And I am so encouraged that there someone out that does the exact same crazy things I do! Thank you Beth.)
Mama always told me to "Marry for Money not for Love"
Some say childhood is the best time of your life, my mom says, "childhood is what you spend the rest of your life trying to get over!!"
-Hope Floats
Mom always told us "Pretty is as pretty does." She preached faithfully, "Don't panic in any situation!" Never have I seen three daughters who can be more cool, calm and collected in a crisis situation than we. Mom is still calm in a storm. And wise beyond belief. At age 73, she ought to be!
My grandmother adopted me and she use to have a lot of sayings. One of my favorites was, "Buy want you want and you'll always need. Buy what you need and you'll never want."
Sad to say, I was not the ideal child - and since most of my childhood was spent avoiding my "chores" - my "momism's" predominately consist of "You were NOT born in a barn!" and "The only way I can find the floor in your room is by the law of gravity!"
I'm 54 years old, and my mother has been gone since 1998 - but I can still feel the touch of her hand when she answered my whining question with "You know, MY momma told me...it's not so much 'Why me?' as it is 'Why NOT me?' The Lord has lessons for all of us, and you and I are not exceptions."
So now...I try not to complain (so much) - and I think about 'Why NOT me?' everytime I feel "put upon" by the world and circumstances. My mother grew up in poverty, lost her husband when she was only 29, raised me alone - and her words and love will never leave me. Thank you so much for asking...
Happy Mother's Day - and My Mama always said..."I love you."....
mom always said "make more friends than enemies!"
oh and to remember to brush my teeth :)
Happy Mother's Day everyone! My mother always said that " you will pay for your upbringing when you have kids of your own".. I always remember that and passed it on to my children. Hmmm , maybe that's why my daughter doesn't want children. :D I love this blog and want you to know Amanda and Beth that you are both great inspirations to me.
Jeani
"It's all fun and games until someone loses an eye."
Unfortunately my mother was NOT a Christian so I grew up things like:
"I brought you into this world and I can take you out."
"Hush up or I will give you something to cry about!"
"Just wait till we get home."
"If they jumped off the bridge would you jump too?"
"Because I said so!"
"This is going to hurt me more than it hurts you!"
I am not a mother but I have raised several kids in my lifetime and I have/will never use these except for "Because I said so!" I have found that the ONLY phrase that really matters is "I love you, Honey!!!"
Happy Mother's Day to you all!!!
Missy
Could you maybe pray for those of us who are still battling the things are mama said? The pain, anger, and hurt are all too fresh and deep from the things that mama said or didn't say...
Amanda and Melissa - you both are SO blessed. Thank you for sharing your mama with us and thank you Beth for demonstrating time and again what it means to be a mama.
My mom just started telling me a knew saying. She tells me to prepare my feilds, like in the movie facing the giants. i love her. Happy Mother's Day!!
My mother passed away in 94'. If she said it once , she said it a hundred or possibly thousands of times " I'm a coward , I want to die in my sleep. " Well , the Lord listened to her at least ONE of those times , ; ) , because sure enough , one night she went to bed and that was it , she went on to be with the Lord.
I always think of the childless on Mother's Day - those of you who have wanted children but for whatever reason do not have them , know that we hurt with you. We do think of you at church on Mother's Day and pray for you. Or if you have lost a child through death , or by adoption , or by abortion. God knows and understands that pain.
I had to give my firstborn up for adoption 32 years ago ,.... and we have been reunited since he was 17. I never ever take it for granted when he calls and says " Hi. This is your SON calling ! " And then for the daughter I was blessed with too. She surprised me this weekend by coming home from college ( she attends in another state ). Both my children love the Lord and I am greatly blessed. Thank you Lord !!
There is a mother in AL though that lost her 14 year old daughter 2 days ago via a car accident. She is our sister in CHrist , and her daughter , ( named CHristian ) gave her life to the Lord last year. She knows Christian is with the Lord now , but she could sure use our prayers for God's comfort and peace right now. ( As could her 17 yr old son who was driving the car ! )
Love you all. Happy Mothers Day !
I lost my mama in 1999. I said to the Lord, "Lord, your word says that you will give us the desires of our hearts...well, my mama was there when I took my first breath, and it is the desire of my heart to be with her when she takes her last." God graciously honored that prayer, and as she was taking those last breaths, she did so with me reading Ps 139 over her.
The thing that my mom used to say that I HATED to hear was, "We need to have a little chat." As soon as I heard the word "chat," I knew I was in for it for something.
Before her death, she asked me if there were any of her things that I particularly wanted. I told her the one thing I wanted most was a letter from her. That letter, some 24 pages long, written in her beautiful script, poured out her love for me...memories and funny things from my childhood, praise for my own mothering of my children, and the knowledge that she was proud of the woman I had become. I keep the letter in my safe-deposit box--it is one of my most precious possessions.
One thing my mother always said was that I was supposed to be a writer. It was not until after her death that I began to write in earnest. While she saw a few pieces of my poetry published, she never saw any of the columns that I have written over the last seven years for our city newspaper. If not for her belief in me, I would never have had the courage to try, and would have missed the privilege of telling God-stories on the editorial page of a secular newspaper.
I believe that had she lived, she would have carried her favorite columns in her purse and showed them off with the same joy she had when showing pictures of her grandbabies.
My mother was a remarkable woman, and I am saddened that it took her death to make me appreciate the many things about her that I took for granted. Yet, God has been kind enough to send other women to fill the gap; to "mother" me both in kindness and in truth--even when they have needed to have a little "chat" with me.
B.J., you are missed. I can hardly wait to greet you again in the presence of our sweet Jesus.
My Mama always said, "Be careful or you will knock out your front teeth!" I catch myself telling my boys that today!
Some of moms sayings....
"go downstairs and play."
"your going to get a lickin when we get home."
"it's time to haul wood."
"well, you deserved it."
"I said NO! and don't ask me again."
"This is the day that the Lord hath made, we will rejoice and be glad in it!
Happy Mother's Day Amanda and Beth!
First off, Happy Mother's Day Amanda!! I'm sure you have MANY "My Mama Always Said" sayings that you could share!! I'm sure you will be passing your favorites on to Jackson, he is sooo....blessed!!
Second, Happy Mother's Day to you Beth!! You are not just a "sista" in the faith, but you are a true "Mother" in the faith and I honor YOU today as I honor my own physical mother. I have been sooooo....privledged to be mothered in the faith through your ministry and I say with all my heart "Thank you"!!!!!
My mama always said that God couldn't be everywhere so he created mothers....I know he can and is everywhere, but I am soooo...thankful he gave us mothers!! She also always said, "Angela, remember who you are". I pass this same reminder on to my three sons almost daily as I send them out into the world.
Praising and thanking God today that he created one of life's most precious and valuable assets, so here's to you MOTHERS!! Hurrah!!
I didn't have the best relationship with my mother. I pretty much blocked all she did and said out of my head. I have to if I want to stay sane! It hurts me to hear about the relationships people have with thier mothers. I longed for a relationship like that. It's a fresh, deep and painful situation! However, I have a spiritual mother I ADORE! She has been there for me...through alot! I wouldn't trade her for anything...but I still have a longing for the unconditional love of my real mother.
I wish every mother out there a very happy mother's day! Amanda and Melissa...you're very lucky God gave you the mother you have! Give her a hug for me!
Dear sisters,
For those of you whose hearts ached over negative, painful, or difficult 'Mama' memories, I just wanted to send a blog hug. My heart aches for you. I know you already know this, but I want you to know that it is possible to have your mighty Jesus heal those wounded hearts. For those words that were not full of grace over your life, I pray that the Spirit reveals them to you so that you can continue to renew your mind and grasp further onto Christ's love for you. I pray that you can have some time today to let Him tend to your heart. I pray that your would come to know how adored you are in Him, how 'even though your father/mother may forsake you, the LORD will receive you (Psalm 27), and that He has kept you as the apple of His eye (Psalm 17). I join you sister(s). And I applaud Him that He would never allow any human to meet my heart's needs. I'm going to go let Him love on me a while - sometimes you just need to be loved on and told you're beautiful don't you? :) Grateful He is unchanging...
Beth and Amanda,
I am weepy after reading your blog regarding sisters and also moms. I am the older sister and my little sister is the joy and pride of my life. We are experiencing a trial. My mom will have surgery tomorrow for a recurrance of cancer. Please pray for her and that the cancer is gone for good. This group of girls need all of your prayers.
My mom always said before leaving the house..."Remember who you are and who you represent!"
Tomorrow we represent our Lord and pray for all glory to be His through this difficult time. We also represent our mom. The woman who has instilled in us faith that God can move mountains and heal too!
Thanks for your prayers!
Jill
I was not raised in a Christian home but I have a spiritual mom who has taught me so much. As I face decisions and trials one thing she would say was...in light of eternity does this matter? SOME TIMES it did sometimes not, it really helps as I make decisions.
As a child, when I was curious about my body and asked a lot of questions. Sometimes my mothers only words were, "That was made for you to enjoy with your husband." When ever I went on a date or wore something that may not have been very modest, my mother always would remind me, "Remember, your body is to be shared with only your husband." I think it gave me a simple line of how to dress, saving my self for who He had prepared for me, and not giving me any wrong views about sex. I hope to teach my girls that they are wonderfully made and that one day they may be able to share themselves physically with another.
Also, my relationship with my mother has never been completely perfect. But this year Father revealed to my friend and me that the the first gift to give your mother on mothers day is forgiveness. How many times I have made mistakes with my children by not taming my tongue. How much grace I need from them. I saw that I needed to continually remember the things of the heart on this holiday and fathers day. As we try to build and mend relationships with our children, family, and His children, let us come back to the Cross to get to the other side. He has given us a Way, let us walk in It. Amen
My Mutha always said in her deepest southern drawl when I was headind out the door to get into trouble "remember who you are and who you come from" . As a teenager I had no realm for understanding the gravity of those words. They were not spoken with a Godly intent, but now ...with 3 daughters of my own. I get it ! I am the daughter of THE MOST HIGH KING, I am honored in the sight of the LORD and I come from the Creator of this Universe , who spoke this world into being with the same Spirit that resides in me . Praise BE!!! I'm about to come unglued as I type.
I'm gonna start that with my girls!
My other favorite is when not feeling well or having a bad day " well, you just need to put your face on and you'll feel betta"
( you know , a little lipstick and some rouge)
Shallow , but often so true !
Happy M's day!
Molly in SC
My mother, who nary said a foul word, used to warn us not spend our money on "farts and whistles". It never struck me as funny then, but when I became a mom and heard her words coming out of my mouth, I thought about what I was saying. And I can't say it without giggling now!
I remember my mom always telling my brother she was "going to jerk a knot in his tail."
Just how does one go about doing that?
I'm laughing just reading all of these, my mom said many of the same sayings to me, but one that sticks out for me is whenever it was storming. Mom always made us sit real still and told us lighting follows noise. It worked, she got a minute of peace and we all believed her. (I think she was just scared of storms) I said the same words (still believing them) to my daughter once and my husband fell to the floor laughing, asking where I had heard that! I'm chuckling now just thinking of it! Andrea
As an exasperated exclamation my Mama would say "my cow!!!" When my daughter was about 3 I said "my cow!!!!" and she whined "uh-uh, it's my cow!"
My mom was a Girl Scout leader and always valued punctuality and preparedness. She always said "There is no reason you should ever be late." I am a product of my environment! I would rather be 30 minutes early than 5 minutes late. By the way, this Mother's Day is one our family will never forget. It was my mom's birthday and she was baptized! Wow, this is one time that being late is going to have it's eternal rewards! Better late than never! Diane
My mama always said--and still says to me and my girls now--"Be sweet, remember your manners, and don't forget to put on clean underwear."
I get the first two, but am not sure why we needed the third when headed out the door!
My Momma died suddenly of a heart attack 10 years ago this April. She was 52. It's hard to believe it's been 10 years. One thing she always told me if I didn't get a job after an interview "Well, that's their loss, not yours." It always helped.
Amanda,
For the past few weeks I have been making mini-muffins with my almost three year old daughter on Mondays. She loves it and so do I -- making mother/daughter memories. She actually calls them 'puffins'!
When I was a teacher, on the first day of state testing, I would bring muffins for my students and would play Mozart "to make them smart". Such fond memories but I love being home with my girl.
Sorry no my momma said but couldn't resist to share my muffin stories. I have been vacationing at the beach with my extended family so I was catching up on the blog. Hope you had a blessed Mother's Day!

My mother always said you will never understand a mothers love until you become one. She was right!
My Mom (forever leading us in the direction of Jesus, whether we wanted to go or not) always answered our request to go somewhere she didn't approve of with "Go ahead and go if that's where you want to be when Jesus comes to get you". That would somehow ruin the excitement of what I thought would be a "fun outing". Oh yes..I have used it many times with my own teenagers!
My Mama and her Mama had a saying for everything! One of the funniest is, "you can't make a silk purse out of a sow's ear." This usually came when she was encouraging me to be more ladylike. I guess I was a bit of a tomboy.
And if I started to talk badly about someone, she'd remind me with a smile, "not all families can be perfect like ours." I'd get the point and change the subject.
I made up my own saying the other day when I told her, "I don't know much but I know my Mama loves me." And she does, unconditionally.

My momma always said:
"Beauty hurts."
And boy was she right ...
One more leg wax and I'm a' gonna scream ...
I love you Momma :):):)
My mom would make up words - there was "burple" for blue and purple, "pestercate" for when one of us was really pestering and agitating another or her, "jim-jams" for pajamas...and the list goes on and on. So much so, that my husband will ask when I say a word that sounds like my sweet mom...you just can't run from having some of mom in you, huh? My mom is very funny, and she's the funniest when she doesn't even know she's being funny. Whatta mom!
My mom always said "Pride goeth before a fall" A scripture that always kept me from thinking too highly of myself!

My mom always said, "Pretty is as pretty does." And "If it's worth doing, it's worth doing correctly." I think she said it was scriptual or something:) It used to really irritate me, because I always looked SO young for my age. I didn't really want to be pretty on the inside, I wanted to be pretty on the outside like everyone else. She was right of course. Being the age I am, I look younger than most, but it takes so much more time and effort to look pretty on the inside. Wish I'd spent more time on that earlier.
And who really wanted to spend so much time doing things correctly when I had other things to do. Now that I have a house of my own, I wish everyone spent as much time as I did on doing things "correctly". Funny thing is..I say those things to my two girls now, and hear my mom's voice everytime.
Whenever my brother and I would want to retaliate over something the other did, my mom would say, "Two wrongs don't make a right!"
