Melissa on American Idolatry

Hey, Sistas! Amanda and I have asked her younger sister, Melissa, a couple of times to guest-author some entries on our blog. She stays so swamped as she finishes up her Master's that we didn't know when she'd ever find the time. Yesterday Melissa sent me something she had written for a different reason and it was so thought provoking to me that I asked if I could post it in our blog. After some thought, she gave me permission. May God speak.

Just a Christian’s feeble attempt to comment on American Idolatry

As I sit here and ponder the News as of late my heart becomes heavily burdened. From Michael Jackson and Anna Nicole Smith to the latest media frenzy, the rich and famous don’t seem to be holding up too well. I wonder if there isn’t some common denominator between these troubled souls. How could those who have so much fame, talent, and not to mention enough money to purchase for them their every object of desire, be so self-destructive? I can’t help but think of the fates of those such as Marilyn Monroe, Elvis Presley, and Kurt Cobain, whose status of fame may as well have been elevated to sainthood. And then it hits me, what if the common denominator is not solely their individual self-destructiveness, but what if it includes the destructiveness of American Idolatry?

It seems to me that idolizing a human being isn’t just unhealthy and destructive for the one doing the idolizing, but also for the one being idolized. If there is any truth in this notion, namely, that it simply is not healthy (or to use politically incorrect language, it is simply morally wrong) for a person to be worshipped and idolized, then the American population is partly to blame for the broken state and the troubled fate of so many bold and indeed talented souls. Can we not appreciate a person’s talent and beauty without obsessing over what clothes they have worn at the Oscars or what person they are dating this week as opposed to last week? Is any single person worthy of this excessive attention or infatuation?

In Romans 1, the apostle Paul condemns the human race for suppressing the truth of God; he says that we should have seen God’s invisible attributes through that which is displayed in the created world. He goes on to declare that we didn’t honor God, but exchanged the glory of the incorruptible God for an image in the form of corruptible man. We failed and continue to fail to rightly credit the Creator, and instead we worship and serve the creatures that he has created. When we gaze upon the beauty or marvel at the talent of another and we fail to recognize that it is God alone who is the author and the source, we are not only lying to ourselves but we are doing a great disservice to our fellow man.

To have the American masses track your every move, fall at your feet, and even scream and shed tears in your presence—knowing all the while that you yourself are subject to the same kind of sickness and eventual death as the common folk—may be flattering for a moment, but in the end it is merely isolating, oppressive, and repulsive. Our obsession with the rich and famous places them in an impossible position, for there is only one name under heaven that is meant to be adored and there is only one being who will not be destructed by our worship. There is only one who remains pure and holy despite His glorious, incomprehensible, and inevitable, yes, eternal fame!

God doesn’t have an emotional need for our worship. Believe me, he gets plenty of it! For even the angelic beings shouted as they watched him place the stars in the sky and even now as I, a small speck on this globe, push buttons on a key-board, the entire heavens and earth declare of his glory! It is He who measured the waters in the hollow of His hand. It is He who weighed the mountains in a balance and the hills in a pair of scales. To whom then shall we liken God? Or what likeness shall we compare with Him? We Americans, like, the craftsmen of old, are guilty of seeking out and fashioning for ourselves meaningless idols—we create them, we gaze upon them, we place hope in them, and then we condemn them when they don’t deliver and meet our needs and expectations. At the end of the day, idolizing a person is as futile as worshipping a wooden statue, for both are corruptible and they shall both return to the dust. God alone is incorruptible, and not only does he alone deserve man’s worship but he is the only being who is not corrupted by man’s worship. He is the one who reduces powerful rulers to nothing and makes even the judges of the earth meaningless…truly, he merely blows on them and they wither.

So I, a Christian who is guilty of having spent hundreds of dollars on People magazines, join my voice with the prophet Isaiah, “who shall we liken God…who shall be his equal?” And I am revitalized by the answer to this rhetorical question: no one. Let us lift up our eyes on high and see who has created the stars…for He calls them by name and because of the greatness of His might and the strength of his power, not one of them is missing. (Isa. 40:26) Only after first recognizing the Creator’s masterful hand behind every facet of life should we appreciate and savor the talents and the beauty of another…and even then, let us tread carefully, for ours is a jealous God. So then, I dare us (indeed I dare myself) to stop pointing fingers and asking why many who have phenomenal God-given talents, or extraordinary and dumb-founding God-given beauty, are so often hitting rock bottom. Yes, let you and me stop pointing fingers and actually claim part of the responsibility for their downfall!

Well, that deserves an A+. It is so amazing that over the past few weeks of participating in this blog; the things God is speaking to my heart, as well as the hearts of my friends, are most commonly the topics posted. He is cool like that. May we lift those mentioned in prayer and look at the plank in our own eyes before casting stones. Way to go Melissa!

I love this!

I've written about this on my blog too... In fact, what I fasted from during my Daniel study was celebrity gossip. It was such a juge thing for me. I too, have spent a lot of money in the past on US and People etc. And I spent a lot of wasted time on line looking a gossip stuff.

Christian "celebrities" aren't immune from this either... I bet Beth has had to deal with her share of feeling worshipped...

Blessings,
Karla

Well-said, Melissa! I wish this could be read aloud on Entertainment Tonight...of course, they never would do that, their show would go off-the-air if everyone responded to it...it's such a shame that so many millions of dollars are made and so many lives are lost because of this American Idolatry. As you say, the lives of those idolizing and the lives of those being idolized...you have hit the nail on the head with this one!

Sincerely,
Alicia in Houston

Thanks so much for this (she says, sheepishly). Lots to think about.

Also: the new blog looks GREAT!

Wow, That is good, all truth. We could easily add to our thinking that our pastors and leaders are not worthy of the praise we give them as well and we can claim fault when they fall to the ways of satan. Any thing and anyone we put on a pedestal above our Lord will be moved from that position by our one true God. I LOVE Beth Moore - I do - but one thing is for sure - I will never "worship" her. Only God is worthy of our worship. Besides that Beth would HATE it. That is not who she is. We must never allow that. This was a good word and thanks for sharing it with us. It blessed me this morning. Love you all, Vicki

Very well thought out and written, Melissa...well done!

I have one question. It may be rhetorical, but I wonder just what keeps you, Beth, from feeling overwhelmed by people. How does God help you deal with that? I KNOW you deal with it rightly, because of how you handle it in ministry and how you speak.

I just wonder that because I watched a pastor here fall on His face with sin. I wonder if it was just because of what Melissa wrote...people idolizing him (unintentionally, I'm sure). I used to see his books and pictures everywhere...now, there hasn't been a picture or book for a few months. Aren't we a fickle people?

To be honest, I have never read a thing he had written, but have watched his popularity here be so strong and then so weak. I wonder if his fame became the last straw and pushed him over the edge. Maybe he didn't know just how to go to his Lord and let the praise be turned up to Him. May God restore him in Christ!

However, I see a wonderful priciple at work in the ministry at LPM, so that idolatry is not allowed, and all praise MUST be turned up to Jesus...such a godly fear, that I want to emmulate.

Well done again, Melissa. What you have written is something I will chew on and hope that any idolatry in my life will have a light shone on it.

Press on in Christ, sisters!
In His Love,

I am from Houston and used to live the majority of my life around the Galleria area. I am currently a married missionary living overseas with my family. Or - better yet - let me re-phrase that. I consider myself a "hip" missionary. Not like the stereotype of most. Still in my 30's, still got "it" - or at least hope I still have "it." :-) I moved overseas very recently and in an effort to stay on top of "US" life and not lose touch with "what's in" and "what's not in" anymore, I've been frequenting People magazine's website to make sure I don't get behind with US entertainment news, fashion, etc. God forbid, right? I figured it would help me stay "in touch" with things and it would help me not to feel so "disconnected" from US life. Yet, I noticed recently that frequenting the "People" magazine website has brought about such a sense of unrest in me and such a high level of anxiety - as I would look at photos and read the articles. Yet, I've remained so consumed with it...refusing to "lose touch with things"...hanging on until the next day to see "what transpired with who/who did what", etc. I sensed the conviction, but wouldn't let go of checking the website regularly. I refused to be "unaware" of everything that everyone I used to associate with was "being made aware of" on a daily basis. I didn't want to feel left out. How timely Melissa's message. How true. How refreshing. I needed it. I know better. I was reminded that all that matters is being "in touch" with my Savior...the one who breathed life into me...the one who desires all of my energy and focus...and that the only "connection" I need is my connection with Him...and out of that everything else will flow accordingly. I think I'll read Melissa's Blog entry daily now, instead of the "People" website. :-) Thanks, Melissa! Amanda...don't feel stepped on. You bless me everytime I log onto the LPM Blog. And thanks, Beth, for your commitment to raising two wonderful, godly daughters. To God be the glory!

Well, this is definitely an eye-opening challenge. I fear for the "Idols" we call stars. I feel sorry for them that their every move is scrutinized. I pray that they can all know the grace and peace that only God can offer. I, too, have spent many a dollar on entertainment magazines and countless hours watching them on the internet and so I, too, am guilty and I will gladly take Melissa's challenge! Thank you for this enlightening post. And, the blogs new look is wonderful!

There is a God-sized hole in each of us that none can fill, except our Creator who sets our hearts on eternity. When we try to fill it with ANYTHING or ANYONE else, we all fall to our own self destructive nature. God help us all and may we look in the Only Place that will satisfy our souls. Thank, Melissa. Much to start being more accountable for for each of us.

AMEN and AMEN!!!! Who are we to worship any other God than the God of Job 38? He is the only one Worthy of ALL Praise and Glory. I certainly find myself just as enticed by the lives of the famous as any, knowing that I don't want that life, though. Recently, I find myself burdened to pray for them as life for all of us becomes more difficult and for some more self-destructive.

Melissa, you said it all!!!! Let us only look to the Heavenly Father. He is the only one true role model for our lives. Thanks Sista!

I just discovered this blog -- what a great post!

My children made the connection a couple of days ago that God probably would not like the "American Idol" TV show very much because "He tells us not to make idols, right?" (This, from a 6-year-old).

My mom, sister, and I are making our plans to come to hear Beth speak in Atlanta in August. It should be quite toasty outside! :)

As a women involved in ministry to youth I have kept myself up to date on "Pop Culture" to remain relevant. I have even received free subscriptions to the rag mags which I ever so relished in their pages. The luster of all of that faded as I completly sold out to loving my savior. Let me tell you, I have been a believer for a LONG time and recently, recently enough that the free subscription hasn't even run out yet, I had "face time" with my creator and my life will never be the same. His Word is alive like it has never been. I can't wait to devour it. I have found myself just throwing away the magazines....unread. Everything pales in the face of my God.

Thank you for this post...you can't even know how it has articulated my thoughts.

Amen! We all need to remember, whether a secular or Christian celebrity, we all put our pants on one leg at a time...well, some might have help, but they go on the same way.

Even our dear Beth, who is an amazing woman, is what she is by the grace of God. And God has been SO gracious to her and her beautiful and gifted daughters.

May we all remember that we are created in God's image, and to pray that those who suffer in the limelight come to saving knowledge of Him, and to not drink up the dregs of the entertainment industry gossip...

Awesome insight..I am so glad to know I am not the only one who fasted from Celeb gossip during Daniel (thanx, karla). I really believed it was harmless until I stopped. (Just so you know, I am on the wagon for good, not just six weeks.) Amazing how just looking at photos of these women colors how you look at yourself, even when you believe you are spiritually and emotionally healthy! I'd say Christian women have so much to learn on priority and perspective.

BTW - The purple is so, as my granny would say, perty!

Such a perfectly timed post for me as I've had a heavy heart about all of this the past week or so. When I see photos of those celebrities they just have that lost, glazed look in their eyes. It frightens me. As a mother it makes me want to sew (or in my case, glue!) a little cocoon around my world to keep all of that out but it's impossible because it's everywhere.

Thanks for taking time out of your busy studying to write. It's so good to hear from you.
I was listening to the radio on the way to work and they were discussing all of the problems Brittney Spears is having. Sounds like the same things we've been hearing about from others. It's so sad to me. They really and truly need to KNOW the love of Jesus. Let's all agree that someone will show up in Brittney's life to share with her the greatest love she'll ever know. The world is so messed up right now...it's very discouraging, but we know "The Hope!"
Thanks again, Melissa!

Oh, my goodness, Melissa, you are so right.

I learned a big lesson a couple of years back. You see, I was going to my first "Beth Moore Event" in Indianapolis. I was thrilled beyond measure - I could not wait - let me tell you, I was so excited there was no containing me!!! So here I am at the event and having a great time watching Beth. Watching her worship, watching her teach, admiring her clothes, hair, shoes, admiring her relationship with the Lord. She was great. And it was fun while it lasted. But that was it - it didn't last. Because you see - I went to meet with Beth, not God.

God was there - I know because I heard the testaments from others who were there. But I missed Him. Can you believe that - I missed a wonderful opportunity to meet with and be changed by the God of the entire universe!! All because my priorities were on a mere human (don't get me wrong, Beth, I love ya - but my love is prioritized now and I love ya like a sista!)

My encounter with Beth didn't last because she is Beth, not God.

Sistas, if I've learned anything, I've learned to pray vicsiously prior to going to events where I could be distracted for God to prioritize my heart and focus my eyes and ears on HIM. And to HIM be ALL glory given. Because it is so wonderful to leave and be filled to overflowing with His Spirit - and THAT lasts!!!

I hope in no way was my false "worship" of Beth a hindrance to her in any way. I pray to the Lord to protect Beth and her entire family from those sinful thoughts and I pray that we all realize how lucky we are that we can personally meet with God anytime we want - ladies - I'm talking GOD!!!!! How much better can it get?

And I am struggling, too, with idols without celebrity faces that I bow down to--those that I 'dress up' for, the ones that I worry what they will think about what I'm wearing today or how my hair is fixed. Shouldn't I be asking my God what He thinks about me?

Thanks Melissa! Very well said! Beth...you have two very wonderful, insightful, and amazing daughters (of course I'm not telling you anything you didn't know already, right?!).

It saddens me to look at celebs and how troubled they are and how their lives are under such a microscope all the time. It's sad that we start out appreciating their talent/beauty and then that appreciation gets out of hand and we become demanding of them. I would think that at first it would be incredibly flattering and exciting for them to be so "worshiped." But then after a while, as they become larger than life, they are painfully aware of their flaws...the flaws they try to hide so their adoring fans wont be disappointed. Yet, the media digs and digs for this dirt, but when they find it, they bury the celeb in it! Such a sad vicious cycle. I'm a wife and a mom of 4 and sometimes feel the pressure of my "popularity" and demands of my "adoring fans" and sometimes want to run and hide too! LOL! I cant imagine being demanded by thousands/millions of people. I'd crack like a raw egg!

Melissa, thanks for sharing this with all of us!

I think we also place our pastors and leaders in positions of idolatry at times. I know I am part of the problem that needs to change. Thanks again for sharing your heart.

thank you amelia for your sincerity and honesty! I can only imagine how painful it must be for any teacher like Beth to consider the participants who are attending but missing God! I hear her prayer everytime she teaches asking God to take her out of the way and do what only He can do. I hear her praying that for herself and for us. Lift the veil...lift the veil!

I was glad you posted something by Melissa; I was very inspired by her experience with the Numbers scripture in " Believing God", and I gotta just share it for those of you that haven't taken the study...TAKE IT!

NUMBERS 15:37-41

Tassels on Garments

37 The LORD said to Moses, 38 "Speak to the Israelites and say to them: 'Throughout the generations to come you are to make tassels on the corners of your garments, with a blue cord on each tassel. 39 You will have these tassels to look at and so you will remember all the commands of the LORD, that you may obey them and not prostitute yourselves by going after the lusts of your own hearts and eyes. 40 Then you will remember to obey all my commands and will be consecrated to your God. 41 I am the LORD your God, who brought you out of Egypt to be your God. I am the LORD your God.' "

I am not going to give it away what Beth has everyone commit to do, but believe me, it is worth it!

Keep the writing coming you guys!

I too have been consumed and deeply sadden by the celebrity news lately. There are so many excuses/lies you (I) can tell yourself (myself) to make your (my) obession of celebrities seem acceptable. But the truth is that it is simply idolatry. Thank you for writing such a profound concept that I needed to hear!

Love this blog and learn so much. Thanks for your insight, Melissa. It's always good to hear truth and bring me back to a realization of how much I can put "stock" into what normal peopel with good press have and do.

Thanks Melissa for sharing this. I haven't been into the gossip rags, but have idolized friends and have been idolized by others. It is indeed isolating, enabling, and in the end, disappointing for both the idol and the idolizer. Isaiah says, " I am God, and apart from Me, there is no Savior." I'm sure Beth has felt this before with others, but to her credit and God's mercy on her, she has a peculiar habit of disappearing so that all you see and hear is Jesus, the One and Only! Praise be to God!

Love it. Also think that maybe talent itself brings with it possibly somethign that makes people susceptible. Have watched two programmes about treatment places for anorexia in the last week, one for young adult women, the other for CHILDREN. The vast majortiy of all the girls (as young as 11) and women were VERY bright, intelligent and talented and it really wasn't about being thin, but about having something they could control and succeed at. Although maybe that too boils down to idolatry in the idolatry of success at whatever it is you are attempting. hmmm.

Hello ladies. Just found the blog because Beth mentioned her blog at the Detroit Conference. I thought it was an undisclosed secret code that I was going to need to crack but then my TOSPHILAS, Girlfriend, told me that there was a link on the LPM website. Yes, Beth, that is my first Greek word that I am determined to remember for the rest of my life. Keep up the blogging, love it! It's fun to do and it's fun to read! Thank you for taking the time to do this. I just don't understand how you have/make the time. We all appreciate it though!

Next week is the last week of our Daniel study and I am sad to see it go. It's been a riveting study and this blog entry hits on the Babylon that we live in today and that we have become so numb to. My ears and mind and eyes are in better tune with the Babylon and I catch myself cringing.

This article is something that I wish could be broadcast from the rooftops! Thank you for posting this.

Off-topic, but I have to share. I can't seem to find a place to post praise reports or testimonies on the LPM website, or here, and Beth, I wanted you to know that, through the Believing God study I'm involved in with my church, God has opened my eyes so much. Yesterday, I had a life-changing breakthrough. I posted about it here: http://joybox.typepad.com/the_joy_
box/2007/02/my_deepest_fear.html
(You might need to copy and paste that into your browser. I don't know if it'll work as a link.) But God is setting me free from old beliefs and "unbeliefs" that I didn't even know I had! Thank you for your obedience to Him in making this study available to us!

What a blessing to see the hearts of the generation of Godly young women who are so filled with conviction. Melissa, your words are powerful, because they are fleshing out God's truth and our hearts are connecting. My prayer for you will be to continue to lean hard on Him, as you finish up your thesis.

WOW!! Let me say that again! WOW!! I completely agree with everything you have said. I have been convicted for some time now to not buy any "secular" magazine which idolizes those who live so far from the truth. As a matter of fact, I am even convicted about looking at them on the stands. But it draws our eyes. It's so enticing. Satan is no fool. (well, we know better) However, our conviction is not enough. We must pray. God laid on my heart not too long ago that these "american idols" do not have a whole lot of spiritual influence in their lives. So, as fellow believers, it is up to us to lift them up in prayer. Prayer is powerful. If WE God's children don't pray for them as often as he brings them to our hearts (or eyes), who will? So, next time you are in the line at Wal mart getting impatient with the person in front of you for wasting your precious time, take the opportunity to pray for those drawing our eyes as we stand there gazing at the magazine stand.

Thank you!

Amanda,
didn't you do a devotional a couple of years ago called "Famous One" or something? It was right around the superbowl and I'm thinking it goes along the same lines as Melissa's writing. I was just wondering.

I just posted a comment and there is something God laid on my heart immediately afterwards. The secular world tends to idolize celebrities but we as Christians are just as likely to idolize those we have great respect for in the Christian world. It is so easy to get caught up in the work of just one person, that we cease to listen to any other person God would choose to speak to us through. And I believe those who are being idolized in the Christian world are just as likely to, um, how can I say this. They are just as likely to fall under pressure because they are expected to be perfect. superhuman. Just as the secular idols are expected to be thin, beautiful, and rich. We must realize that God is the only one worthy of our praise. No one else is perfect. no one else is sinless. And to idolize christian singers, authors, speakers in any way is an abomination to God. Please, let's pray for all those in higher positions than ourselves.

I agree heartily with Melissa's brilliant essay. Reading the blogs reminds of the story of the bank tellers. To learn how to recognize counterfeit money, they are not trained to recognize the fakes, but the REAL THING intimately so they can tell the difference! I've never had time to keep up with all the media maze (People, US, etc.). When my curiousity has been stirred to see what all the fuss has been about (think "Friends" many moons ago!), I realized I wasn't missing anything at all and really couldn't understand all the buzz. It's so easy to get sucked into t he media machine that we can waste so much time on it. God has been convicting me to take seriously His Word to "redeem the time." I think that fits here, too. Thanks, Beth, Amanda, Melissa, and sistas. See you at Simulcast tomorrow! PTL!

God forgive me. Before you no god was formed, nor will there be one after you. You are the LORD, and apart from you there is no Savior.

We are so like the Israelites. We'll turn to a golden calf (or an oscar dress)in a heartbeat. We turn to something we can see when God in His glory has already placed himself in ALL of creation. I just have to open my ears and eyes. This is something that God has really been speaking to my heart, just from the standpoint of the time wasted from doing His business.

Thank you for allowing God to use you to speak His truth. What a privilege.

Melissa,

Bless you for allowing God's Word to penetrate through your heart and spirit concerning the idolatry lived out in our world. I have found how easy it is to make a celebrity out of others including our spiritual leaders and speakers.

Regardless of the fame of others we must not lose sight that God reigns over all. We are not to compare ourselves with others. God has a purpose and plan for each of us. Our confidence comes from who we are in Christ, not from the fame placed on others from mere men or women. For there is no respect of persons with God.

It is vital that we pray for our nation and our world. We are to love as Christians. For God is love.

1 Peter 5:8
Be sober, be vigilant, because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour.

2 Corinthians 11:14
And no marvel, for satan himself is transformed into an angel of light.

Let us be watchful and pray to our Father in Jesus name for those who have been deceived. That we ourselves will not fall prey to the same.

Bless you in Jesus name.

Hi, from Tampa, Florida, to all my blog-sisters, (I'm too prim and proper to drop the "er" and add an "a", but I'm still a work in progress, so it might happen one day.) In response to Melissa's post yesterday, I prayed from Psalm 119:37 for all of us, that God would turn away our eyes from looking at worthless things and revive us in His way. I also prayed Philippians 4:8 over us, that whatever things are true, noble, just, pure, lovely, and of good report, that if there is any virtue, if there is anything praiseworthy, that we will meditate on these things.

From one sister to another, I have to pass along to you that when I began to memorize Scripture, God began to radically transform my mind. Ask Him where He wants you to start, and He'll tell you because His faithfulness is great and His mercies are new every morning. Psalm 119:102 says, I have not departed from Your judgements for You Yourself have taught me. I can testify to this truth. May I be so bold as to suggest that we replace worthless things with hiding the Word of God in our hearts that we might not sin against Him?

This is not my blog, but Beth and Amanda, I hope you will allow me to use it to get this urgent prayer need out. As I was praying for Maddie, (granddaughter of one of our church members)The Holy Spirit prompted me to use whatever technology I have available to spread the word about the urgent need for a MIRACLE in the Shaw family. Maddie is 3 and had to be put back on the heart/lung bypass machine. On Tuesday, she will have open heart surgery to implant an artificial heart while she awaits a live heart for transplant. The GREAT PHYSICIAN is the only ONE Who can turn this thing around. I know this blog gets into homes everywhere, so Sisters, please join with me in prayer, BELIEVING OUR BIG GOD FOR BIG THINGS, both for Maddie and for the Simulcast on Saturday.
Love and blessings to you,
Patti Hayes

OK I just commented a little while ago, but I just came from my home church, Green Acres, where the simulcast is going to be held live tomorrow. I helped to set up books on the book table, and can I just say that I am soo excited??!! Everyone I know will be there, even some men (gasp!) My mom, my stepmom, all my peeps (that's what we call our sistas in my neck of the woods), my Celebrate Recovery family, etc. etc. I cannot even imagine the amazing things God has in store for all of us who will be there. Whether live or by simulcast! Bring it on, Lord!

P.S. Can you tell I am just a little bit excited?

Wow, that's amazing. Thanks so much for sharing.

Also, I'm attending a Simulcast tomorrow with my church. CANNOT WAIT! I purchased your book (Get Out Of That Pit) for my mom for her birthday. But, as I went to wrap it, I imagined her opening it in front of the room full of people and hearing the replies....."Get out of that pit? What pit? Are you in a pit? :) So, I saved it for her until everyone had left. She has thoroughly enjoyed it....and, we'll be with me tomorrow. We're so looking forward to it....praying for you, Beth.

My prayers are with Maddie and her family as this dear little one of the Lord's undergoes such major surgery! I also agree with my sistas in prayer over Beth for her silmulcast tomorrow! May she radiate a contagious love for Jesus and speak only the words He has prepared for her to speak. May she boldly open her mouth for Him and with His truths. May she be blessed tenfold for her obedience to speak on such difficult topics...but as Beth said in patriarchs...if God found it important enough to include in His word, we ought to address it!! Be bold, Beth...I love you, dear sister!!

Melissa- Thanks for sharing your thoughts. You should be willing to share more often. ;)
Psalm 135: 15-18
“The idols of the nations are silver and gold, made by the hands of men. They have mouths, but cannot speak, eyes, but they cannot see; they have ears, but cannot hear, nor is there breath in their mouths. Those who make them will be like them, and so will all who trust in them.”

During the Old Testament times people would literally carve idols and somehow believe that the object they created was a god. Additionally, they believed what they had just made with their own hands was greater than themselves even though their idols never did anything more than sit or be papyrus weight. Verse 18 says that anyone who trusts in them will be like them—useless. Nowadays we don’t chisel out idols from gold, but we do make idols out of things like: money, possessions, titles or relationships. It’s scary to think we become what we worship. That’s why it’s so imperative to worship the One and only God and pray to become more Christ-like each day.

P.S. I love the new layout. Its beautiful and reminds me that God is still painting the canvas of my life.

Last spring, while doing Believing God, I was convicted by Him via a celebrity magazine.

God uses Life & Style? Yup. Or at least He did for me. :)

In this case, it wasn't about my attitude towards idolatry. It was about my attitude towards Him! I realized I treated God like a celebrity I was reading about on glossy pages. See, I realized people feel they "know" celebrities simply because they know about their lives. Of course, if most of us met one in person, that celeb wouldn't have a clue who we were. [Even in the Christian community.... Beth, I know your dogs' names, but you don't know mine. I'm Kris. Nice to meet you. :) ] I wasn't giving God credit for being the "famous one" who also knew about me. Part of his entourage, so to speak.

I continue to work on true intimacy with Him and on balance of star-struck awe and relationship. And I'm working on putting celebrities in their proper role in my world - part of God's beloved creation, but not an object of worship.
