Something's Got Me Thinking

Hey, Girlfriends! It’s Sunday and I’m writing you from an airplane seat on my way home from Boise, Idaho, where God threw a party of His Presence for 5,000 of us gathered there. They were a phenomenal group and, for me, it was love at first sight. My whole team and I really dig serving off the beaten path, so we were very anxious to get there but wondered if we should prepare ourselves for a fairly quiet group. Let me be clear. That is not what we got. I named them Noisy Boise within the first five minutes. They wanted Jesus and were willing to practically jump out of their seats to grab a word out of thin air from Him. Oh, man, I am so grateful to God for allowing me to worship shoulder-to-shoulder with such an incredible group. I will remember them (you, if you were there) for a very long time.

This weekend I did something I almost never do. I stayed over on Saturday night to have a retreat with my LifeWay team. To tell you that I’m crazy about them is a gross understatement. Through the years we’ve become a team in every sense of the word from the guys that do the set-up, sound, lighting…to the computer technicians that do the graphics for praise and worship and the power point for the messages…to the event team that actually puts on the conference and mans (or womans) it…to the entire platform team who walks into a very well prepared-for environment. Everybody does their part and, incidentally, nobody’s part is for sissies. We work our tails off. As I told Noisy Boise, we aren’t very slick but we aren’t minimalists either. We don’t give a group the least we can get away with. We drag our nearly dead bodies out of that auditorium on Saturday afternoon. The members of the team are as different as our roles and, joyously (and even unexpectedly), everybody from the truck drivers to the artists have become family. The down side for me is that the most sanguine of the siblings, yours truly, is one of the very few who lives outside of Nashville. They get to spend a ton of travel time together while I go solo. They often send me texts and cell pics from the airport and it makes me so jealous I can hardly stand it. This time we decided we’d all stay after the event, eat pizza together, play games (Travis hosted a rousing round of Fish Bowl and the card game Pit) and, my personal request, learn to do the Cha-Cha Slide. Play that funky music, white girl. It was hilarious. (And modest. Don’t mess with me here. It was just plain fun.) We had the best time ever! I laughed myself silly and dropped in my hotel bed last night thoroughly exhausted and deliriously happy. Full. God is so good. So fun. I think He had a blast last night. Maybe even laughed out loud.

But now for the primary reason I’m writing to you. Early this morning I realized that I had an all-day plane trip (HOURS!) in front of me with no extra reading material for a poor, exhausted mind. For an obsessive reader like me, that’s not a flight. That’s a train wreck. I’d studied all the way up so I hadn’t thought about the oversight till it was time to go home. Adding to the annoyance was some excellent reading material sitting on my back porch that I’m in the happy middle of right now. (I think I’ve told you before that, at almost all times, I have two books going that are totally separate from my research books: a Christian inspirational book of some kind and a novel. Forgot both.) I resorted to the magazine rack, grabbed three decent looking selections, slapped a fortune on the counter, and headed for the plane. One was Time’s 40 Anniversary Special, another was a Vanity Fair edition that looked more interesting this time than inappropriate and the third was a magazine my personal assistant really loves. It’s kind of a health and fashion thing with an over-40 flair to it. The cover looked pretty hip so I pitched it in the mix with a “What the heck.” Thumbing through it, I happened on an article that was not only well written. It was one of the most thought provoking secular articles I’ve read in a good while. (“More,” May 2008 Issue, p.90)

In the article entitled “My So-Called Genius” author Laura Fraser recounts her remarkable journey from whiz-kid-dom to an adulthood of unmet expectations and fairly ordinary life. Don’t let my crude synopsis keep you from reading the article for yourself because I won’t do it justice. I’d like to recap enough, however, to explain why I found it significant. By the time she was five she’d already been labeled “precocious” and told repeatedly how special she was. The next years did not disappoint. She was brilliant and darling and surpassed her peers impressively, drawing the attention of adults who conveyed to her in a myriad of ways that she was destined for greatness. Then came college where she entered an academic world of peers who, not coincidentally, were told the same thing. By her late forties, she’d accomplished many good things but the expectation of greatness and the sense that she’d never quite achieved it (despite a best seller) haunted her with feelings of failure. All the well-meaning forecasts had done nothing but cast a pall of perfectionism upon her and, as her consultant so aptly pointed out, “Perfectionists always lose.” The consultant confronted her with a very important challenge that I’ll paraphrase: “Must you write a great book? How about writing a good book?” Fraser describes how age and time had become precious gifts and how she’d come to reconcile the unreasonable expectations with her reasonable success. In doing so she really made me think about some things. Here are a few:

How careful we need to be – as parents, teachers, relatives, leaders, or observers – about telling gifted children how great they are going to be. It is a trap and a forecast Fraser claims rarely pans out. She points out the monumental difference between talent and having a clue what to do with it and (again paraphrasing) how genius rarely exempts people from having to work hard just like everybody else who wants to make it. I’m a big believer in encouraging young people and imitating the Apostle Paul with Timothy by telling them that they are extraordinarily gifted. BUT, as we learned this weekend in Boise, every gift is a trust placed in human hands by a holy God and it is up to each individual to develop the integrity, humility, and work-ethic to know what on earth to do with it. A gift never guarantees success. In the long run as well as the routine day-in and day-out, those with the grit to just keep doing the hard thing will often prove more effective. Gift without grit is a dang waste.

How profoundly wise God’s way is. If we’re willing to follow His paradoxical path on the winding roadmap of Scripture, we have the joy of side-stepping this ankle-breaking trap. So will a few children we’re privileged to train. Living just to be great will prove at least empty and at most unbearable. Spending ourselves for something infinitely greater, however, still fans our parched souls with the God-given need to matter, but relieves us of the relentless pain of being the “It” Person at the center of it. To live for the greatness of God IS to live the great life. Oh, I know we’ve heard it before but what if something in us clicked all the sudden? What if we all at once awakened to what a dream-killer perfectionism is? And to how pitifully small and unworthy a goal personal greatness is? We were meant for so much more. Every one of us who embraces the glory of God as our lofty purpose for living will end up doing great things precisely because we end up doing God-things. His holy hand rested on the least act renders the ordinary extraordinary. Far from the least but sadly uncelebrated, spooning soup into the mouth of the weak and bed-bound or manning the church nursery so a tired mom can go to Sunday School are acts of highest worship when offered in the Name of Christ. Though the arrogant and ignorant minimize and miss it, Christ beholds the sight like a breathtaking work of art, tilting His head and squinting His eyes to study each subtle detail. “She has done a beautiful thing to me” (Mark 14:6).

Christ, the very One who called us to abundant, effective life and commanded us to splash in the cool springs of joy while living it, announced the secret to the great life without a hint of contradiction:

Pour it out lavishly, sacrificially for the glory of God and the good of man. Those with presence of mind and semblance of health are called to pour out the drink offering of their lives until the cup is turned completely over and every last drop of energy slips - perhaps unnoticed, uncelebrated – into the vast ocean of earthly need. The last imperceptible drop of your well-lived life will sound like a tidal wave hitting the floor of the Grand Canyon to the hosts of Heaven.

“I’m already great enough for both of us,” Christ says in effect, relieving the willing of their woeful burden. “Just follow Me.” For “whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant, and whoever wants to be first must be slave of all. For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His life a ransom for many” (Mark 10:43-45).

"Perfectionists always lose" - if that's not a quotable quote, I don't know what is.

This blog post is right on the heels of a lot of college graduations - I just attended several this weekend. Something about all the awards made me feel really small, and I wondered what my graduation will be like.

Thanks for the encouragement to attempt the hard things in life not for the approval of others, but to proclaim His glory.

Thank you for sharing this. I struggle with this as a mom. My little girl is a very bright GRC (gifted) student. I want her to realize that God has given her potential but I don't want to set her up for failure by making her think it will all just come to her -because when it doesn't she will feel really stupid...believe me, I was told the same thing at a young age, yet here I am, finally in college in my thirties because I feared everyone else would find out that I'm not so exceptionally bright after all!! My pride just couldn't take it as a 17 year old - and yes, my pride still takes a beating when I struggle through a basic course!

This is a powerful word, Beth. Spend it lavishly, Paul tells us. That's something I've been thinking about recently. I'm a "40 something, never quite lived up to my expectations of what abundant living must look and feel like kind of girl." There are times when my heart resides there...but there are seasons when my "current" falls short of what I crave. And what I crave is contentment and joy in my current, for whatever task currently boasts my portion.

As of late, Christ's Spirit has gently, yet boldly spoken this truth within...

"Spend it now child. Pour it forth. Do not wait. Tomorrow is not promised to you."

As a writer, I've been prone to keeping my words to myself...saving them for some great book yet to be published. That book hasn't arrived yet, but God asks me to spend my words for him...

NOW. Not then, but today. And thus, my obedience leads me to an end that I consider less than perfect, but one that may be his perfection in me even now.

I will continue to pour as long as...

No time table. Just as long as.

Until I come to my earthly end and walk home to my forever, where I long to hear the words...

"Well done. Spent well. Come and enjoy your Master's happiness for always."

Now that's got me thinking. Let not my pouring, Lord, be in vain. Let it all count for my "next."

Peace to you this week, Beth. You are well loved!

This is such a wise, wonderful post Beth. I don't think we ever outgrow that need for approval, that need to be "great"- until we can finally see ourselves as He sees us. I know I struggle with it all the time, and I'm a grandmother! It creeps into everything I do - even blogging. Do I have as many comments? How many people visited my blog? Why don't I have as many as so and so? Oh that we could learn to find our worth in Him; to see from His perspective.
Thank you for this Beth.
I'm glad Boise was noisy and wonderful!

Good thoughts, Beth -- thank you! I like the insights you pulled out of the secular magazine. I have lived forever with a servant attitude -- putting others first, doing my best for (and with) God so as to glorify Him. How do you reconcile service to others with your own needs? I'm so confused as to how to care for myself. For the last two years I've been "pouring myself out as a drink offering" to serve my husband as he battles major depression. It's not going away....

Beth,

Your message is so "perfect" for us perfectionists. What a timely Word. And what a good Word to help us not try to make our kids the same kind of perfectionist that we already are and so desperately wish we weren't. God has everything we need. He is so good.

AMEN! What profound thoughts! I recently had one of those thought-provoking experiences that seems to fit your line of thinking here, Beth. I've been playing piano for 50 years, 30+ of them in church, choirs, praise teams, worship ensembles. (Nobody's better than TRAVIS!!!) Recently one of our choir members questioned me about my background, training, experience, etc. then asked, "When were you told that you had an exceptional gift?" I looked at her in amazement and had to honestly answer, "No one ever told me that." Maybe it wouldn't have made any difference in my life if someone had said that. Today, I take every opportunity to use whatever talent or gift God has given me for His glory. Could I have done more? Probably. Would I have been better? No doubt. Words of encouragement (not for perfection . . . I used to be one of those, too! . . . my own worst enemy) are more powerful than we can imagine. Praise God for your time in Boise! And for your Saturday night with your team. Thank you for all you do for Him, for us.

The gift of genius almost never precludes the need for grit. I told my children, both the gifted and the struggler, not to get too comfortable because the people with a gift always "die out somehwere" where the ones who continue to work at it will surpass the obviously gifted every time, in my own observation. Success in His Eyes is our own reliance upon His Greatness. I love that place of rest in how we define ourselves as Christians. Welcome home, weary Beth. Rest now in Him this day and let ordinary become extraordinary with Him. His Yoke is easy. I love you, my friend, Annette

Thank you, Miss Beth.

I recall in Believing God (forgive me, but I just can't get the HTML tags right to save my life, so imagine that underlined or italicized) when you mentioned that God teaches you in themes, and I've noticed that He does the same for me. Theme of using our gifts has been a consistent theme He's been using in my life for the better part of two weeks. In fact, last week's sermon was about it, and I had to catch it from the narthex while I helped serve a Mother's Day luncheon (which was my extreme privilege and pleasure) but I caught enough to know that God was trying to hit that theme home with me. He's brought it to me time and again since then, and I have no doubt whatsoever that this current message you're sending us from thirty thousand feet up is precisely timed for this Siesta, and countless others, to take it in and savor it for a while. In fact, I may fix a chai tea latte later tonight and journal about it on my own.

I recall months ago thinking that God was setting me up to do a great (and very public) work, and He humbled me by making me realize that I wasn't being faithful enough with the small things. That ego thing trips me up all too often, and God's been doing no small work in diminishing its influence in my life and work. I want nothing more than to please my Savior in any way possible, and if that means wiping down the bathtub umpteen times so my kids have a spotless place to bathe, or squirting toothpaste on my husband's toothbrush so he doesn't have to when he's too tired to remember his own name at the end of the day, then I will joyfully do it.

You've helped to drive this current theme home for me, and I am endlessly grateful. Safe travels to you, and I know I speak for many, many when I say we can't wait to hear from you when you're on the ground and on your back porch!

PRAISE HIM!

Thank you, Beth, from a woman who was constantly told as a young girl that she would "one day" be a stunning beauty and would light the world on fire. Now half way through my 40s it has dawned on me that "one day" has come and gone and I have never felt like the stunning beauty I was promised to be. After analyzing that for the last few years I realize that I am a very attractive woman (though I've never felt that way in any moment that really mattered)but so what! When I was a small girl I went to some sort of amusement park that had giant mushroom figures in the park. Supposedly you could make a wish on the mushroom and it would come true in the middle of the night (or so that is the way I've remembered it). After wishing to turn into Cinderella I waited up all night (or so my 5 year old self thought I did) to see if I would indeed turn into the beautiful princess. I did not. Surprise, surprise! Funny that I remember that event so long ago, but I think it was a humorous and simplistic foretelling of the life I would lead - constantly waiting to turn into something bigger and better than what I am. Just in recent years have I realized that what I actually turned into was something much more than what I had hoped for.

I fear that so many of us women are still waiting to grow up, to become, even to turn into. The truth is God has made us all we need to be, and you are so right that the key that unlocks the magic of it all is service, holy and selfless service that helps others but ultimately glorifies God. When we serve it is like putting on the magical glass slipper that opens up a whole new world to us. It reveals who we were meant to be all along and makes us more beautiful than any garment, or makeup, or fresh haircut could.

Thanks for your profound blog. I apologize for my lengthy comment which is actually more of a blog entry in and of itself! You just hit me right where I'm at!
Love you and praying for you! Kay

Peace is often a simple exchange...trading pride for humility...trading have to's for His will...trading failures with forgiveness...trading selfish ambition with servitude... Whoa! What a powerful word. By putting our focus on bringing glory to the Lord, we will be blessed far beyond anything that the world can measure.

Personal greatness is such a let down. When life is over and done with... very few people will remember how "great" we were. BUT living a life to the glory of God is a life that just keeps on giving. Eternal recognition is by far a better goal that worldly recognition. I'll take that.

Praise the Lord, I finally figured out that living my life poured out for Christ is all that matters. Not being perfect. I'm 32 now and doing big (and itty-bitty) things for His glory. And reminding myself each day that abiding in Him and following His call is my (and His) greatest joy.

Dear Miss Beth, Thank you so much for this past weekend – for offering yourself as a drink offering and making yourself available for the power of the Holy Spirit to be manifested in you and witnessed and experienced by us. I feel like I have learned so much - and what an answer to prayer! I have been praying that I could and would open myself up to GOD with abandon and give Him complete access to my heart and life so that I can do the things, the impossible things, that He has prepared in advance for me to do. I have been praying for the supernatural ability to know how to reach and make my self accessible to the true act of loving GOD and loving others – specifically in reaching women for Christ and giving them a new message of hope. After this weekend, I feel so much more equipped, encouraged and commissioned to fan the flame, step out on faith, and do "the thing" for Jesus! May GOD be glorified in all we do! You be blessed this day, in Jesus name. So much appreciative love, *jodi

Oh, Beth. What joy fills my heart to see a post from you on your way home from our fair city - Boise. My heart is full after the conference this weekend. I feel renewed and I'm so thankful. Nothing compares to a contented, full heart of joy!

I love what you have to share about perfectionism. I have been learning just that thing the last few years - that perfectionism shouldn't have a place in my life. It's something I have to continually fight against - expecting so much out of myself. But I'm determined. I'd much rather embrace and enjoy life with arms wide open than be so hard on myself. And I want to give the same thing to my children. Baby steps. :)

I so wanted to wear a shirt this weekend that said, "I'm A SIESTA!" but my heart was hugging you just the same. Get home safely and keep us in your hearts.

wow, Beth - but i know exactly how that feels. Everyone always bragged on me - "you have such a beautiful voice", "oh i love to hear you sing", etc. But because I am not on Broadway or made a CD or written songs, I feel like a huge failure.

Doesn't matter that I sing and worship at my church and that I know I'm exactly where I'm supposed to be. There's something killing my dreams because I thought I would be...something else. That I would be needed and wanted. I'm not even sure what to do with these feelings. But I've been praying alot lately that God would help me to be content with where I am and not to long for what He doesn't want me to need.

Thanks for giving me something more to think about here in this dark little part of my heart.

That post is one this achiever is going to need to sit with for a while. Thank you for continuing to share your life and thoughts with those who read this post.

Thanks for taking the time to read what we write back. God's love in you is gorgeous. I pray He continues to work on that in each of us.

Bless you all as we each look at what perfectionism has robbed in our own lives...

Beth,

As the mother of one of those that the school system has labeled "gifted," this post was for me.

Thanks for writing it -- much to ponder. Off to do that now!

Your Well

your well is deep
a gift from the
Sovereign hand of God.
Your well is full
to rejoice the hearts
of many.
When your door is
shut the water fills
every point of your land to -bitterness.
But when your door is open
it floods many, and sweetens
the smile of your heart
and many.
Your well is deep
is it there for you to keep?
Is it not His gift to you to replenish
the souls of those without?
To fill their hearts with joy
and sweeten their smile?
Keep the door open wide and
hold not deep inside.
For God's door is open wide
and sweetens the hearts of many.

Our pastor is so quick to remind us (as often as is necessary), that the person who was in charge of making sure the preschool class had Koolaid and graham crackers is equal in God's eyes to anyone on the platform at "Big Church". I'm often reminded of Mother Teresa's famous quote: "In this life we can not do great things, but we can do small things with great love." My deliverance from perfectionalism was when I realized that when God looks down from Heaven, He sees all our heads as equal. No one is greater because she does a supposedly 'greater' work. He loves us all the same, and what He loves most is a heart that is wholly His. Thank you, Beth and Noisy Boise, for the reminder.

Oh , Beth. Such beautifully inspiring words. I have printed off parts of this and will put it on my bathroom mirror. Thank you for reminding us , how the LORD sees our unremarkable -to-the-world gifts , so that we will be inspired to continue giving til it hurts. Because the One this is ALL ABOUT ( !! )sees and acknowledges. We praise you Lord.

I love you Beth.

First, I really need to read this! Second, I have a standing ovation for my God!
I have been wanting to come to San Antonio so much and I just felt guilty to spend the money on me to come. I have had a lot of medical expenses over the last few years. My husband told me to go and that we could afford for me to go...but still I had no peace. I told him I wasn't going to go and then I stopped and prayed and asked God to provide the money if I was to go. I got a call Thursday from my church. They said something was waiting for me in an envelope at the office. It was an anonymous money order in the amount of $600. The exact amount I calculated that it would take me. I told no one about my prayer but God alone. I was not surprised at God doing this but just that He would bless me when I am so undeserving. He is giving me the desire of my heart to go and be with all my siestas! How I praise Him

Praise the Lord for a great LPL in Boise! And for a rejuvenating retreat with your Lifeway Team too... I'm so glad that you got to spend some time just having fun with them! Sounds like you all had a blast.

I love what you wrote when you said, "Everyone of us who embrace the glory of God as our lofty purpose for living will end up doing great things precisely because we end up doing God-things. His holy hand rested on the least act renders the ordinary extraordinary." Thank you for this reminder, Beth. May our focus remain on His glory and may He transform the ordinary into the extraordinary in us!

Much love and appreciation,

Beth,
I so undertsand your thougths today about building up our children to a point that can not be obtained. I am a special education teacher and work with the other end of the spectrum. I work with students that feel that they can not obtain anything worthwhile. They are challenged on so many fronts of their lives. So often they see their more academically adept peers receiving the acollades of achievement while their achievements go unnoticed. Everyday I try to encourage my students to realize what they have accomplished and that as they struggle and contiune to meet their goals that they, too, are meeting the challenges of life and fulfilling their purpose on this earth. Being in a public high school setting, I have to bring God into the classroom through the mouths of the students. As I ask them to reflect on their lives, their goals and their achievements and failures, God leads me with the appropriate questions that allow the Christian students in my classes to voice their spiritual experiences. These students give a voice to God's work in their lives. By their testimonies of faith other students experience the truth that God works in them and can open doors to wonderous blessings. You are so correct in your statements that we must show our children that it is God who blesses us in our achievements and our failures. We have to show them how to see Him and understand that we alone can do nothing--it is through Him that all things come. Thank you for a wonderful word today-- God Bless

Thanks again for another thought provoking post. Which I might add these days really helps to stimulate my brain, as I am in the throngs of raising "young uns" as you call it. Life is hard enough on its own, we dare not add the plight of perfectionism and "having it all" onto our children. Oh how I long that they will get "it": that living in God's glory and for HIM, will be more to them than any job, material item, or "it" position in society.

Thanks for you insight, I so long to hear,

Wow Beth...thanks for this. I am thankful you did not have anything to read because you have given me something to think about and ponder! I have 3 boys...one is gifted and talented, one has been diagnosed as MMR and the 3rd is very bright and full of energy...all so different and gifted by God in different ways. It is easy to get discouraged for my special needs son wondering what life has ahead for him but what a great reminder of the truth that he is God's child created with a purpose and that he too will live the great life as he lives for the God he loves with his whole heart! Thank you for the blessing of your ponderings from the article!!!

Thanks, Beth. Your post brought to mind two things. The first is the first stanza of Matheson's hymn, "O Love That Wilt Not Let Me Go."

"O Love that wilt not let me go,
I rest my weary soul in thee;
I give thee back the life I owe,
That in thine ocean depths its flow
May richer, fuller be."

The second is what I've recently started to say to my soul every morning when I look in the mirror. "Self," I say, "drop dead! It's not about you." (1 Cor. 16:31; Rom. 6:11)

Thank you from many Cole Valley Christian teachers who were at the Boise Living Proof conference. The timing of your visit was perfect! As you mentioned the seven Xs on Friday night, we all looked at each other and sighed! Your reminder to take time to exhaul -to rest and take time away with God, and your reminder to strive for excellence in just a few things (rather than doing many things well) were both timely for us as teachers. It was a wonderful time in noisy Boise and we thank you! Many teachers on our staff have used your Bible studies to help us earn our Bible credits for teacher certification. I loved the message of this weekend - Paul passing on the faith to Timothy, just as we are passing on the faith to our students. Thank you! May God continue to bless you as you have been a blessing to so many!

Well, first of all, I'm so glad you had fun this weekend! I've told you before, but I just worry (no not worry, I was at Omaha LPL a year ago).....I am concerned that you have enough fun. So Yay, Beth!

Our pastor talked about superficiality in our walk today. He said "Christians are good at discipling other Christians to look like them, but not so good in discipling them to look like Christ".

To be like Christ... He is perfect enough for both of us. Amen.

God Bless You this week Beth!

God put that all on your heart just for me! Today, I was at the end of my Mommy-Wife-Homemaker-Christian-Woman rope! I wasn't suicidal or anything, but just done. Done with doing the mundane. Done with being "ordered" around.
But I needed the reminder that EVERYTHING God's given me to do is important!
AND, on the other hand, I have this amazing son. He's such a love. Such a schmooch. Such a cutie. And I needed to be reminded, that even though he's four years old, never stepped a foot in a classroom and still doing 2nd grade math, spelling & reasoning...I need to challenge him to be God's servant...not just a smartie pants!
So thanks for being my church today! Thanks for bringing the message that I needed.

How interesting that I have wanted to respond to your visit to Boise ever since I left the convention center on Saturday with the six women I came with, yet, I did not find the opportunity, nor energy until late this afternoon.

How wonderful, that I probably would not have read your entry if I had, and would not have seen God’s continued message to me through your post about being gifted.

I have come to grips with the fact that no matter how talented people have told me I am --- it won’t matter a bit if I don’t use it for God, while seeking Him to give me the strength to keep going.

Thank you for reminding me that no matter what, I need to make God my first priority each day. As I fill up on His Word, I trust His Spirit will guide me in the direction I need to go, and that one day, I will see the fruits of my labor.

Beth,
I have to say that the words God spoke through you in Jax are still echoeing in the back of my mind; I am so stubborn, but I heard Him through you.
This part is really what got to me:

" The resurrection has power over our lives everyday-
YET WE LIVE LIKE WE ARE DEAD!"

I am no longer living in the suffering, though I share it with Christ, but I live in the resurrection!

If you only knew where that has me right now....

Its not easy, but also as you said,
" We are not just in the race to run it, but to WIN."

You should post that youtube.com post of the man helping his son with a broken ankle to the finish line, that was AMAZING!

Who knows if I even kept on subject of your blog post at this point, I just felt like sharing.

I guess something I just realized is there is a big difference in living for Christ, and following Him...

Be Blessed:)

My son is a gifted guitar player. He plays in the youth praise band at our church. But in March, we had to take him out due to his laziness! He kinda got the attitude that he was "so good", he didn't have to practice as much. He played his guitar all the time, however, he would not practice his praise music for that week until the day before! His grades dropped because everything was "easy"; he quit working hard to achieve. We pulled him out of the band, put him on restriction and he has not played his guitar since. The deal was, when school is out, if you have improved and done well, you can be back in the praise band. Since March, he has been working harder at school and pulled all of his grades up. He begged me about a month ago to please let him play his guitar, I wanted to let him so bad, but I didn't. I explained to him what perserverence was and told him about finishing the race! I told him that he would thank me later! He has continued to do well and so on Mother's Day, I let him play for about 45 mins. and today I let him for an hour. He has one week of school left. I think he has learned a valuable lesson and I pray it sticks for his next school year and his life! He will resume in the band June 4th! (Just in case your thinking that I may have been a little harsh, we had been trying to get his attention since Christmas and nothing else was working! So, we went to the heart of the matter!)

Beth, I really needed these words right now. I was one of those children that was always told how "special" I was and that I was bound for greatness. I feel I have done nothing but failed all these years. I will be 39 in a few weeks and have finally realized that I am "special" in the eyes of God and that is all that really matters. Yes, my family sees me as a failure because I dropped out of college, I live in a double-wide mobile home, drive an older vehicle and I do not have a lot of money in the bank. I consider myself very much not a failure because I have God on my side and I know one day I will get my mansion and I will see my savior face to face and then I will have true peace. I constantly worry about what my family thinks about me but I am trying really hard not to let that get me down. I am destined for greatness.....when I reach those streets of gold I will be in His greatness. Praise God for all His blessings on me and my family. And praise God for you Beth and for everything you do for Him. One day we will be in His greatness and what a day that will be.

I'm not sure this went through, so I'll try it a second time:
1. Please come to my son's next parent-teacher conference. That way, when they talk about how he reads 2 years ahead of grade level, you can repeat this to me in love.
2. When the same teacher talks about how my son has trouble finishing a task-or sometimes even beginning a task-you can remind me that God can and does use all types of folks.
Right now, we are camped out in David VS. Goliath. Almost daily I remind my son that when Saul's armour didn't fit, he had to:
1. Trust GOD.
2. Be himself.
3. Use his own skills.
Peace,(and pardon if this gets posted x 2)

Thank you, Beth. As a school teacher, I saw so many children just driven to the edge of nervousness by parents who "only wanted my kid to be his/her best". These kids were smart and kind and talented, but many of them didn't enjoy learning or doing whatever their talent was because it became an obligation. How sad it made me that they couldn't love learning for learning's sake or playing just for playing - they always had to be the best to feel successful and, I'm afraid, loved. There's was always the question, "What do I win?" What a tough rope to walk during some of these parent-teacher conferences.

Thanks for your encouragement! I'm glad your team was able to let your hair down and enjoy each other over the weekend.

Beth,
What a powerful word. Yesterday Grace took six of her friends to see Prince Caspian for her birthday. I took them all to the concession stand to get snacks and one by one they ordered and went back to the theater. At the end of the line was Alex, one of the most precious boys you'll ever find. He is sweeter than anything and just so incredibly kind. He made the comment to my friend that he must have been really bad since he was last in line. Nancy assured him that was not at all true, that the others just ended up ahead of him. He then said to me, "I'm always last." I bent down and got eye level with him and said, "Alex, do you know what Jesus says about being last." He shook his head no. I said, "Alex, Jesus says the last will be first and the first will be last." His eyes got so big and a smile crept across his face. I think a seed was planted right then and there. It doesn't take a genius to change the world...just a willing heart.

Hello from Boise, Idaho where I was 1 of those 5000 women who was filled with wonderful encouragement from you, Beth. Thank you so much for your (God's!)words this weekend; even if at times you felt you didn't get to say what you wanted to say. (you mentioned on Saturday that you thought Friday night wasn't taught how you had planned....) My goodness, I soaked up every word God gave you and needed every piece of it! It will take me a few weeks to digest all that was taught and to go through all the notes I took!!! My husband asked me yesterday, "How was your retreat?" and I replied "It was amazing but I'll have to tell you what I learned throughout the next few weeks my head is still spinning!" ha ha ha
I had a rough week last week (along with everyone else it seemed!) and now I feel refreshed and ready to see what God has in store for me. Being 8 1/2 months pregnant and having an almost 2 & 1/2 year old has really made me tired these past few weeks. Thank you for all you do for the Lord and God Bless!

We live in such a "celebrity society." You're great if you are somebody is what the world says. But it has been an age old problem that we all want something more than the love of Christ...reminds me of the mother of the sons of Zebedee asking for greatness for her two sons James & John---wanting to edge out Peter and make sure it was her two sons that sat on either side and maybe not Peter. What is my ruling passion? Success, significance, special to someone---what rules my heart? What do I want more than the love of my beautiful Christ? It will come out and leave us empty. Thanks for living humbly before your God and longing passionately to advance His Kingdom.

Beth,
I was one of those 5,000 noisy women with you this weekend in Boise, ID. As I was there in the arena, it was as though the whole weekend was geared towards what I needed to hear, must of been why God made it possible for me to attend. I learned so much insight about myself and insight from II Timothy, that I don't think I will ever be the same. After this weekend I know now what God has been trying to tell me, He has been wanting me to become a Paul to a Timothy, use the gift that He has given me to its fullest potential and not how I have been using it, to get back into the Word daily and lastly to take on my addiction and overcome it and not be afraid to ask for help. I was so blessed by your message and the music of the worship team, that words can not express my gradatude. I pray that you will come back to Noisy Boise sometime in the future and I can't wait to start the online Bible study with you that I just purchased.
Until we meet again,
Freda

Beth, I was looking for a Bible Study on this very topic just last week!! Couldn't find one, and sensed God nudging me to do the work myself--that it would mean more to me...I have been studying, but you cannot possibly know how timely this post is for me.

I hid school papers behind my toybox in first grade if they didn't earn perfect stars. I paced the floor in the middle of the night in third grade--my parents never knew it. Had my first panic attack in 6th grade at the thought of not getting an A on an open book test. Perfectionism has tortured me all of my life. Rather, I have tortured myself all of my life. Now, 32 years old, a wife and mother of a two year old--I've had enough (did I mention I'm a pastor's wife, and a pastor's granddaughter)? I want so much to be myself (complete with all my flaws), and know that I am still loved. But when you have been told all your life that you are talented, or have lots of potential, it's easy to develop a fear of falling short of everyone's expectations. You think that when they find out you're not who they thought you were...they won't love you anymore. Or if you don't accomplish all that they thought you could, they'll be utterly disappointed in you.

Anyone reading this, please pray that God will continue to free me from this. It's only in the last year that He has opened my eyes to the hold perfectionism has had on me. I'm ready to come out from under this yoke!

Hey there Miss Beth--this is one of the Noisy Boise girlfriends speaking here--can I tell you what a blessing to have your teaching on fear and where it comes from--there was so much there my hand could barely keep up with the important teaching you had for us here!! I soooo needed a word from God and I thank him for using your gifts and talents to minister to us--Noisy Boise can't wait for your return--make it soon, and by the way, the worship team you have were awesome too!

Thank you for coming to Boise, Beth. I walked out of the arena feeling as if a light from Heaven were radiating me with a glow - I couldn't stop smiling. I'm certain passerbys thought my wide-grin an odd one, but hey - it was Jesus smiling at them through me!

I remember you in 2001 when you were in Nampa and saw you again in Salt Lake in '06. God is assuredly using you as a vessel despite the enemy's attack. Be encouraged. You ARE extraordinarily gifted at 'Talk'! :)

Love hearing how you spend your down time. It really let's us know that you get to have time for you. I'm sure everyone is drained from the adreneline that is pumping while God is working through the entire team and you. There is no place like home though especially when your man and dogs are waiting for you.

Beth,
I'm going to read and read again this great post; as a recovering perfectionist, I was completely rabid about not passing on the addiction to my children! Praise God, though they all are "extraordinarily gifted" they are so aware that everything they have and are is because of God's grace and is for His glory to be used for His purpose.
My FOO and my FOF looked like a wide angle lens! It meant so much to me to hear you say that my ministry impact could be that wide as well. That has turned out to be true. I am nicknamed "mamabev" at church, and the girls just flock to me! God brings them because I am truly a miracle -- a miracle of His grace and His mercy to entrust His gift to one so messed up and broken. He puts the pieces back together again, and makes a masterpiece, and I just can't praise Him enough!
We drove 8 hours from Oregon to be in Boise. I brought my youngest daughter (married 18 months now) and my "adopted" daughter (the youth pastor's wife. They are truly my Timothys. We (and some other 20-somethings) have been meeting once a week for almost 2 years, studying, talking, just being together. They can ask me any questions, and I get to share my life and how special they are because of Jesus. They are serving, they are godly women, and so much smarter than I was at that age! How I longed for a Paul in my life! How humbled I am that He has entrusted me with these precious lives.
Just keep serving Jesus, Beth; He has entrusted you with an extraordinary gift!
Love,
an Oregon siesta (yes, we should have worn t-shirts in Boise!)

One of our favorite movies quotes is from The Incredibles, "They keep finding new ways to celebrate mediocrity." Either we build our children up to celebrate something that isn't really all that wonderful or we put the world upon their shoulders, because they are "gifted."

I think that the most important thing we can do for our children and for others is to speak truth over their lives--with blessing and hope and prayer.

I am the child of a perfectionist/ super-mom and was frequently called "gifted" by parents and teachers.

But you know what I do? I am a mom and a wife--and that is enough. I thank God for those, who spoke into my life at a young age in ways that have marked me to not try to be perfect or remarkable, just simply being what He made me to be, His very own treasure.

I'm so thankful for the wonderful weekend you had dear Beth--thank you Jesus for answering prayers!
Love,
holly

PS Have you read the new Mitford book? Did you like it??

Thank you, thank you Beth for being faithful to say whatever God places in your heart after you process it with your head. I had just skipped right over that article in More (prob because I was racing to do the next thing on my list!) and needed to hear those words about getting detox'd from perfectionism.
Especially at our age, I think, it is so easy to continually measure our years of sand in the hourglass against that fabricated goal instead of what He calls us to be: faithful. Keep teaching us!

Dear Mama Beth,
Thank you for your post = it was a wonderful wrap up to the Noisy Boise event this weekend. I am going to have to print it out - it kind of tied up a few loose ends for me. Thank you! I came from Scappoose, OR. As it turns out, both the plane ride there AND back was half full of women from OR coming to see you.

I had to chuckle at your need for magazine selections. Imagine my surprise on Thursday, when I opened my mailbox to a magazine called "BEER." (no kidding!) Not only do I not drink beer, but I hate the taste and had never even heard of it before, and yet there it was with a tag with my name on it and everything. I have to say that I don't think there are any profound articles with something great to share in it, but I did think it was funny. And no, I did not bring it on the plane with me to read = I didn't think it would be quite appropriate!

And by the way, I don't think I will ever forget you "vacuuming" the stage...would you like to come vacuum my house - you look like a pro...just be sure to leave the guns at home...I laughed until I cried...

Please, please, please post the commissioning from Boise. It was so emotional for me, that I can't remember a single word. looking someone in the eye and saying those words was profound, yet I desperately need to remember them. Looking into my own eyes in the mirror will be even harder, and yet it is definitely something I need to do...along with getting some fibers up my nose...will you please post it? Thank you again for a wonderful weekend!

Your fourth paragraph explaining about the 'child' who was always told how beautiful and precocious and genius and destined for greatness ~ was my life! And I've never been able to quite figure out in my own mind why I always felt I had to be more, do more, achieve more and on and on and on! I entered college two weeks after high school graduation, got my Business Degree, then went straight on to Nursing School for four years and had to be THE BEST at everything I did or touched! Yet there was always something missing...some vague sense of failure, because as I grew older, there were no longer those people coming along side me telling me what a genius I was. It was simply life and a job and a sense of failing at it! I don't know if any of this makes any sense, but I WAS that child the article was talking about, and I now have a new understanding ~ Even if I can't express it adequately! Thank you for writing about this. I believe it was a word meant for me this late night! I will be out there tomorrow hunting down a copy of that magazine to read for myself! Praise His Name for this valuable insight! And thank you Beth for being my 'personal Sunday School teacher' for over ten years! I have 'sat at your feet' and learned from you and you have mentored me in a myriad of ways! I love you for that my dear Sister in Christ! And I am eternally grateful! Cheryl

Beth,

Your words hit a deep cord - awesome, awesome, awesome with the power of the Holy Spirit! You gently remind us that we are called to live lives of service, not of greatness as the world sees it. I loved this statement:

Those with presence of mind and semblance of health are called to pour out the drink offering of their lives until the cup is turned completely over and every last drop of energy slips - perhaps unnoticed, uncelebrated – into the vast ocean of earthly need. The last imperceptible drop of your well-lived life will sound like a tidal wave hitting the floor of the Grand Canyon to the hosts of Heaven.

Magnificent!

Beth this was an amzaing post! It
spoke volumes to me (I'll spare you the details)hee-hee! But just know it was a word aptly spoken and a word in due season!! Then I am reading through the other siestas comments and Anonymous post the poem of the "Well" - That really hit me like a sock right between my eyeballs, kinda hurt, but kinda woke me up too, which is good, very good.

I have felt like I have been trapped at the bottom of my own well and it was dry, because after my mom died there was nothing left to pour out. Now I realize I am drowning in my own water that I have trapped inside because I have gotten closed off for a season and shut the door to the well and it's getting kind-of bitter in here!! The answer is to open-up again and allow what God has put within me to spill out into the lives of others. They are in desperate need of it and so am I!!!! I need to once again begin to pour myself out like a drink offering and in turn my heavenly Father will pour back into me. He will restore me and return me to the joys of my former days, but there is something I must do first!

I am so greatful and so touched tonight, you just have NO idea really how much this lifted my spirits and inspired me tonight. I feel fresh fire falling softly this night in a home in Redmond, WA and I am so blessed to be a part of ''SIESTAVILLE''!!!!

Lots and Lots of Love,

Such a timely word for many of us who may soon be hearing from Nominating Committees regarding a place of service in the coming new church year. May we be thick in the Word, prayerful and eager to serve, serve, serve....within the body of Christ & without.

Satan will tell us we can't do it- Christ will SHOW us we can!

From my pastor's sermon yesterday morning, the words of Jesus to Jairus come back to me..."Don't be afraid; just believe....".

Thanks Beth.

That would have been a great speech for graduates! We expect so much more out of our kids these days! All I can remember as a child is playing outside after school until my Mom yelled for us around dinner time. We didn't have competition cheerleading, club soccer, elite dance, soccer camps - I could go on and on. We just plain played with our friends - kick ball, kick the can, etc... A's and B's were expected but we didn't have AP classes and 2-3 hours of homework everynight. I'm tired just thinking of it all!!! You are awesome and I'm looking forward to Atlanta and Texas!

Thank you for your "message".....great food for thought.
No, I was not one of those children that was told I would be "great" or "beautiful"....frankly, I've struggled all my life with what I call my "inabilities"...thinking that I should be better, or smarter or prettier. It has taken me a long time to realize I am who I am because of God. And yes, He has given me some great abilities but it took a long time for me to realize that everything does not have to be "perfect", including myself....which I still sometimes struggle with! I guess it's because I could never accept myself as I was, thinking I should and could be better. But I am becoming more accepting of myself now, through God's help! And realizing God can use me, just as I am....

God has gifted us undeservedly hasn't He? And the grit always comes from Him too, doesn't it?:):) That is what I want God to make me into, Beth, in all honesty, into a person who lavishly, sacrificially pours out her life to the glory of God-I've found out the hard way that anything else even remotely prideful is destructive to me! I am about to cry, but I just really want to hear Him say one day, "Well done, good and faithful servant, you love me with everything you had. I love you my daughter." That is what I want. That is what I want.:) LORD HELP ME! I want to please HIM.

I really appreciate this post, Beth, especially in the current situation my family is praying through. My husband and I are having to deal with a school system that wants to test my 6-year-old son for ADD and have my 4-year-old daughter evaluated for Asperger's syndrome. As a mama, it is hard to hear those things. But,we are pressing in and asking the Lord to show us how HE sees our children. It's nice to hear someone from the author, someone from the "other side of the picture" comment on how being super successful in academics at an early age does not necessarily mean you will have a perfect and easy time of life! I consider your blog today another word of reassurance from the Father, so thank you!

Beth,

I can't tell you how much this post has spoken to me. Thank you Thank you!

Perfectionism is probably my greatest enemy...as it has sucked the life out of my mother, mother's mother...and has greatly attempted to suck it out of mine. I have fought and fought becuase it is so ingrained in me, yet it feels so slithering icky and wrong. What the Holy Spirit has been speaking to me is that this whole perfectionism thing can be nixed by a whole new mindset - Romans 12:2. The hardest thing for me has been HOW????

((I just spent 30 minutes thinking this thing through and God gave me an AHH HA Holy Spirit moment.. and the answers I needed. PRAISE GOD!!!))

Oh love you so much, Beth. I pray that you have a terrific day - one of peace, brilliant joy, and some good time with your loved ones!

I am coming to Houston next week for the Four Square Church Annual Convention, Downtown. Any chance there is a Starbucks you might visit down there??? :)

ONLY 3 MORE MONTHS UNTIL SIESTA FIESTA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

BLESS YOU ALL,

Beth, thank you for being willing to speak when spoken to. From the other posts I read and for myself, this is definitely a much-needed and appropriate message. So many times we view success/greatness through the lens of this world and this society. If only we could see, I mean really 'see', what greatness really is, through God's lens. And we can, in His Word. Those stories of great people in the Bible are not just stories, they are truth. and not just truth in thier lives. God desires to do great things in our lives. Those stories are a "Look at what I can do when you choose to obey, when you choose Me above all else," from God. He anxiously awaits our total surrender to Him, and He will give us the desire of our heart, HIM!!
Thanks, Rebecca

Your post reminded me of something my dad (who's a preacher) said about you the first time I pulled up an audio clip from one of your 30 min spots on the website and let him listen to you. He said, "boy, I didn't know she was so preachy." Consider it a compliment. And keep "preachin'" it.

Don't even get me started about the time my daughter came in the room and asked me why you were yelling as I listened to one of your audio clips. Or the time back in '98 or so when I was at my first "Beth" event at a church in Birmingham, AL. I overheard a couple of sweet little older ladies in the bathroom great the services were going and how anointed you were. The conversation ended with one of the ladies saying, "I think she's got the baptism of the holy spirit." Being brought up Assembly of God and then switching to Southern Baptist when I married, I just smiled and laughed to myself. You've got it alright.

Boy did I need my heart to hear that...not just for me, but for how I'm teaching my kids to be too. I finally realized not too long ago that I was wishing for the experiences in life and the relationship with God that others had. I realized that I can have that kind of overwhelming joy too, but I have to be willing to give God control. So I prayed for a change of command(that's what they call it in the navy when a new captain takes over a ship). What a relief it is to let God do his thing in my life, knowing it's not going to get messed up or fall short. Whatever I have, I want him to use.

Beth,
I feel as though this blog (and that article) was written just for me. My 4.5 year old son is extremely bright; he was given an IQ test last Tuesday and we got the results a mere 5 days ago... he has an IQ of 143, which puts him in the 99th percentile among 4 year olds. It's wonderful to know that, yet I've had on my heart a bit of heaviness. I want him to remain challenged in school and for him to exceed and to know he is gifted. But most importantly, I want him to know his efforts are for the Lord. I told him that God has given him the ability to learn a lot and learn quickly, and that he needs to work hard. I also reminded him that he can be whatever he wants to be when he grows up, whether it is a doctor, baseball player, missionary, etc.

There is that fine line of encouraging him, in the Lord, for greatness while not crossing the line by always expecting greatness or perfection.

Oh, the joys and struggles of parenthood. God is good and we cannot perfect His plan for our lives. I'm excited to see my son exceed in school, but so much more excited to see his knowledge of and passion for the Lord take root and consume him. :)

Blessings to you and LPM,
Joy

Dear Ms. Beth,
I just needed so desperately to thank you for coming to Boise this weekend. About two years ago, I attended one of your conferences in Utah. It was amazing. What was so amazing is that God clearly spoke to me and moved me. Two weeks prior to your conference in Utah, I went to a cousin’s wedding. When she got up to dance with her Father during the reception, I had to turn away because I was so upset at what could never be for me. My Father was a lifelong violent criminal, my stepfather sexually abused me and later killed himself. On the plane ride back home from the wedding, I was looking over the rocky terrain below me and the old hymn, “On Christ the Solid Rock I stand” was playing in my mind. At the time I thought it was very weird because I hadn’t heard that hymn in years. Then two weeks later I found myself in Utah at your conference. Your message was wonderful and was about how God’s love was immeasurable. At the end of the message, you were speaking to us and you said, “He wants to dance with you”. Immediately I remembered seeing my cousin dancing with her Father two weeks prior and I pictured God and me dancing instead. My eyes filled with tears as Travis and the worship team sang “In Christ Alone”. I was standing just taking it all in when the song transitioned into “On Christ the solid rock I stand”. You can believe that I was trembling with the awesome realization that my God had prepared me for the weeks prior to your conference. I have never in my life felt so moved and so loved. It was an amazing experience.
In the two years since, I had some rough times and began to doubt my faith. Whenever I would get really down that song would play in my head and I would remember how undeniably God met with me that weekend. A few months ago I was talking to my Mom about the experience and she wanted so badly to see you speak. I looked on the internet and saw that coincidentally (Ha!), you were coming to Boise this May. We immediately got tickets and we were overjoyed to see you this weekend. This message was equally as special to me. For years I have felt like I was “going out of my mind” because of all of the hurts of my past. I’ve been so afraid that I was going to repeat the history of my childhood in my adult life. Also, I’ve been asking God why he let so many terrible things happen to me as a child. You’re message this weekend was exactly what I needed. Again I felt like God held this whole conference just for me and I am amazingly overwhelmed by his love and goodness. Thank you for taking the time to come and for doing what you do. I am so excited to one day become a Paul and find out my purpose in Christ. Ever since I saw you, I’ve been fanning that flame…big time! I’m sure you touched a lot of ladies lives this weekend, but for me, you reunited me with my Lord. One day I will see you in heaven and tell you about the purpose that God worked in my life.
Your sister,
Candace

If this is posted twice..I'm sorry....
I am one of the blessed ones in Boise. When I registered for the conference in June of 2007, I was so excited and could hardly stay in my skin. I had this deep sense that God was going to come like a fire into "Treasure Valley", and that He was going to be unstoppable. Just like the wildfires that we experience here in dry seasons. That is what I have prayed for during the year of anticipation.
I can not describe how my jaw dropped when the message for the weekend was announced. I am still stunned, boy did HE ever come through, my head is still spinning. I totally echo with my siestas from Boise...it will take weeks to digest.
We will keep fanning the flame, we will stay in His Word, we will love Him forever! How else can we possibly respond to such and incredibly wild and amazing, "take your breath away" kind of God?

This message on the heals of my 8 yr old daughter receiving the highest GPA award for the 2nd grade. They start indoctrinating so early, don't they? And it broke my heart when my daughter said there was a little girl in 1st grade that was crying because she didn't receive any awards. I’m thankful God has shown me that perfectionism is not for us, but for Him alone. And the glory belongs to Him alone. I remind my children that we have the intelligence, the gifts and the talent because God created us all uniquely and we are to give Him all the praise, honor and glory for all of it. May we remind ourselves of the lessons we attempt to teach our children.

I love the Word you shared with us! To be honest anytime I have followed God I have been mistreated badly. Some family members quit talking to me and that was hard to work through and it took lots of prayer! I so enjoyed that you wrote we don't have to do the things in life for others to approve of but to bring glory to God! That's it. My sons are in the season of their lives where they are trying to figure out what they want to do in their lives. Their father and others keep giving them the advice to pursue some field where they reap a lot of money. I have drilled in their heads that they need to pray and ask God what His will and direction is for their lives and do it. I have told them that if they are in God's will they are successful, not by their income because that can disappear quickly, but because they are doing what God called them to do. That is success and brings glory to God. Sometimes when we walk in God's calling on our lives we will not have the approval of man but that is okay.
Also, I am glad you had time with Travis and the Lifeway teams. You all need that. You all work so hard and it's fun to get a chance to play every now and then!!
Have a great Monday.
Love,
Patty

Yet, in studying, reading and praying and asking God "I need your Word and I need You" ...He has begun to show me! Thank you. I was considering stepping out of the mentoring mom role but this weekend God clearly said NO! I just couldn't hear it but in the NOISY BOISE arena I heard it clearly, thank you for teaching the Words God put into your heart and mind! I had to hear that gift without grit is a dang waste. I am a transplanted TXN (have been one now for 25+ years!) ... and all Gods' girls said AMEN!

Beth,
Thank you for getting out of the "belt" and coming to the great State of Idaho! Thank you for being obedient to the Lord and speaking the words God wanted us in Boise to hear.

As others have mentioned my head is still spinning from all that you shared. But God used you mightly in my life and confimed in me that a Sabbath rest is needed and the reason our flames are going out is because we are exhasted! And that it's okay to not think we have to do everything, especially in the church. Thank you for reminding us to do a couple of things for the glory of God.

The commissioning service at the end was so special because I repeated those special words to my beautiful daughter. We were both bawling. It was a great time to spend that weekend with her.

Special thanks to the worship team for the awesome music.

Blessings,
Devonne

Thanks Beth. The part about knowing what to do with your giftings... Much of a "kick in the pants" that I have needed lately. Exhortation is a good thing... very good.

I am going to have to come back and read this post. Thank you for sharing with us the insight you gained from this article. What a blessing you are.

Thank you. I need to read this post again to allow what you said to sink in more. I really really struggle with this probably more than anything else, to the point of being paralyzed. I often walk around with a constant self loathing attitude, inwardly of course, because I'm not perfect. I've read books. I've prayed. I've had moments of relief. But it is a daily battle. When I was a child, I had a joy and freedom and tenacity. As I've grown up, I realize that life isn't so joyous all the time. It is full of decisions, heartache and frustration. I so want to just be free again.

This post encouraged my heart today. So much is going on in the lives of my young adult/teen children around this very thing-pursuing your interests-fear of failure-what makes their life a success-feeling like you have to be "perfect". I feel overwhelmed in trying to help them navigate the murky waters of life after college; life after high school; just life choices in general. Thanks Beth, for the words to what I hope to convey to them.

Awesome Beth...once again Jesus speaks to us through you. Thank you for being a willing and open vessel.
I have struggled with perfectionism for years....and years....I am 62. Mine went to OCD all to try and prove myself worthy to everyone and I do mean everyone. I was never quite good enough when growing up....you know you got an A- but you could have had an A or an A+. If I did a household chore, I could have done it a little better. So of course I tried to do it better and better and better. This obsession has kept me from risking life because if you don't get it right, why try it? If I can't do it perfect then I won't try it.
Praise God he got ahold of me a few years ago and really started to work on that facet of my life. I have come a long way, but have a long way to go. It did finally dawn on me there is NO perfection until I see Jesus. It is a daily walk, one flesh dying session at a time. HE is so wonderful....never takes us there until HE has already prepared us to some extent.
I wish I had a nickel, well maybe a quarter for everytime HE speaks to me and says, Georgia just try, it doesn't have to be perfect....I will lead you, just be my open vessel. So I am. At least I am most of the time..:)
Thanks again Beth, for your openness and your Godly wisdom. You are the best.
If your team ever want to really get away...come to Traverse City, MI....God's country. Beautiful blue water and gorgeous rolling green hills. We love you here....
Sisters in Him....
Blessings,

I am exhausted after a 3 day 12+ hour a day work weekend on a busy oncology unit. Discouraged because I feel that I can't do enough. Jesus can work in any situation and that brings my focus back in the right place. He gave me grace so I can thank Him for what He is doing. Thank you so much for sharing those insights!!! Dear Beth:

I too was among the noisy Boiseans, and I came away so blessed by the worship and your teaching. As I wrote on my own blog, you unpacked a lot out of 14 verses, and God spoke to my heart in several ways.

My love affair with the written Word of God began the moment I accepted Christ over 30 years ago. I am always hungry to hear and learn more. Your teaching on Friday and Saturday made for a great meal!

Thank you for your obedience to Christ.

no WONDER i'm sitting at seminary waiting for my husband to graduate, with very little ministry fireworks of my own, thinking i'm waisting my time/talents and need to get out there and do something.

its the voices of my 5th grade teacher, my high school art teacher, my youth pastor, my aunt, my previous boss. its their voices telling me i'm SUPPOSED to be great and do great things for the Kingdom.
wow.

i wonder if this is what Paul felt like when he was stuck in prison and could "only" write letters to all his beloved churches.

thank you.

As a society, I think we have spent too much time trying to make everyone special. I don't mean in a healthly way- just over- indulging our whims. We have raised up a bunch of little narcissists ( me included)

What silly unrealistic expectations we have put on ourselves. I am thinking average looks pretty good. Thanks Beth.

Beth, I so needed to hear this message!! We expect so much from our children today. They are so much brighter than we ever could be!! My son who is a sophmore in College came home and stated that he did not want to go back next year! He is a microbiology/Chemistry major. We were so disappointed!! Sometimes we must remember that our plans are not always God's plans!! He is not sure of the direction his studies should go so he wants to go to school part time and work part time.

Becoming a Christian has changed our way of thinking of Success! I know that whatever he chooses to do if God is included then he will be a success.

I think he was surprised when we calmly discussed his decision to leave school and did not get upset. We know that God has a plan and we need to watch and see where God takes him.

Thank you for this reminder about our expectations and about what really matters in life. The gifts that we give to others in honor of our Saviors love and sacrifice!!

Beth,

Thank you so much for sharing your thoughts. This is the first time I've realized that I fell into this trap myself. My parents were never the ones to put pressure on me to achieve greatness, but so many others did - my brother, teachers, school counselors, etc.

I went off to college too and found myself in a sea of gifted overachievers. Too much of my self worth came from how I felt I measured up against my classmates - brilliant multitaskers with a seemingly never ending supply of energy. I just couldn't measure up to their "perfection".

I chose a career in teaching and am now a stay at home mom. Too often I felt like I squandered the tuition my parents paid by choosing such a low paying and demanding job that attracted little respect in the small community in which I taught. How foolish to think that I was some sort of failure for thinking that I did not "live up to my potential."

I have since grown tremendously in my faith and understand that anything I do should be done for the Lord. But even as a stay at home mom I struggle with comparing myself with the "success" of other sahms. Am I doing as much as they are?

Thank you for reminding me that my focus should be on the Lord, and Him alone. He is my source of worth and I only want success as it relates to His kingdom. And there is plenty of work to do for His kingdom with my two little boys!

For the last three years a group of us have gotten together to attend your Living Proof conference. We get in some some fun shopping, great food and most important Worship time with Travis and yourself." This is our favorite time of the year when we can feel "God touched" and spend all night sharing what we learned with you that evening. It has brought us so close and we sure do appreciate all that you and your team do to make it happen. We are planning on attending the conference in Connecticut this year. The weekend in New England. Can't wait to see you in October!! We thank your staff for all they do. We always get seats right up front and you can see how dedicated and hard they work. God Bless them all!! In His Love, Lori

You are all going to be so sick of me today!! I just finished reading all of the comments and have to speak to some of you.

Peggy - Thank you for being a Special Education Teacher. You truly have a heart for these beautiful children and I thank the Lord for dedicated, wonderful woman like you!! Thank you for noticing their potential and cheering them on.

Nancy - as the mother of a 19 year old Special Needs child, or as we call him "differently abled", I feel your heartache and share in your joy. We all thought we would have "perfect children". I am so glad God knows what is best for us. They are our Teachers in life. My son is so perfect in many ways I can't begin to explain the love, laughter and joy he brings to not only our household but others as well. He is a 19 year old who brings joy to others by entering High School singing the Praise and Worship songs from Sunday Church service. This is a public school by the way. The teachers and bus drivers just love him! Our special children are perfect in Christ. Rejoice at the gift we are given.

Just me - nc beth: I am just like you. Never the pretty one, certainly never the smart one and never the most popular. Struggled with that for years and then discovered that because I lacked in those areas I grew in others. My sensitivity to others, my ability to listen because I didn't think anyone wanted to hear from me, my compassionate heart. God knew me before I was born and he made me perfectly for his purpose. I am working on what he wants me to be and love him for making me who I am.

I love reading the wisdom from so many of you. You touch my heart.

Love, Lori

After living with the label of of "special" and "gifted" I can honestly say that it is a trap for a very large pit!
Not living up to "expectations" whatever the expectations may be, both spoken and unspoken is a very unhealthy view of oneself. What appears at times to be self-loathing, is indeed, like you say, self-worship. It produced enabling, disappointing relationships that always failed me, and personal choices that continually and aggressively were made to somehow achieve a level of perfectionism hereto unknown to common man.
The worst part, is that there are times where one succeeds and does so handsomely, which only serves to reinforce the behaviors that one wants so desperately to avoid!
I think what's even worse is, that within this way of thinking, we think wrongly about the LORD. C.S.Lewis said, "Not that I am (I think)in much danger of ceasing to believe in God. The real danger is of coming to believe such dreadful things about Him. "
The reality that must be lived in is this: that a right view of God, makes a right view of ourselves, and therefore a right view of others. Therefore, nothing is "small" as compared to "large" for Him, because all things and works and such are done in Him and through Him and for Him. Letting go of "perfectionism" for me, was on par with letting go of one's ego. Extremely difficult, and yet without doing so, finding that there is no chance of ever ending up living up to the potential that God has given each of us.
Thank you for being willing to "go deep". Sorry for the lengthy blog, it just hit a core. I love you.

Both of my children were told they were the best at everything and all they did was perfect.
They are 20 something year olds that don't understand why the world doesn't recognize them as the king's of the Universe.

They are smart, gifted in many ways, but they are very narcissistic and they care very little for anyone else's feelings.

They especially could care less for the foolish parents who crowned them and officiated at all of their royal events from age one.

From someone who did it the way the "experts" said, please don't do this. The cute toddler turns into a sullen, ungrateful 25 year old all too soon. A little hand that points and says "gimme" becomes a young man that says "gimme" because that's what you did all along.

Beth,
I was too one of the Noisy Boiseans from this past weekend. I haven't heard you speak before nor had I done any of your bible studies. I went at the encouragment of my mother. She has done several of your studies and just seems to really enjoy them. So I went... Not knowing how or what was going to happen. I am a preschool teacher and I babysit quite often since my husband and I don't have children yet and it helps bring in a little extra money. And I am EXHAUSTED... so it was refreshing to hear that we do need to REST and I have been struggling with some work issues and God confirmed in my heart some things. Thank you for telling us that we are beautiful... that we have extraordinary gifts, that God did not give us a spirit of fear but one of a Power, Love and a sound mind (even though there are days I thought I could lose it). It is easier to believe the bad things then to believe the good. Wow... is all i can say about the event. Thank you for putting your forhead to the ground and praying for us in Idaho. Please come back sooN! I promise you, you won't be disappointed!!
Sincerely,

Wow Beth, this spoke to me so much. First, I am a perfectionist even though it would probably look the opposite if you looked inside my life. It is the "all or nothing" way of life. If I can't do it perfect, then not at all. There is so much guilt and dissapointment living like this! I think I have realized (even just now) that my spiritual life is the same. I always feel God is displeased with me. Maybe because I see myself as an imperfect Christian. I want to let it go. Thankyou so much for sharing this.

I so appreciated the wisdom and insight offered in this post, Beth. I felt "paralyzed by my potential" as a kid, and was afraid to risk for fear of failure. God's taught me to focus on His approval, not man's, and what a transformation this focus continues to produce in my heart.

As an aside, I just have to tell you...I was so excited to discover "More" magazine just this weekend. I thought it was so cool that it focuses on mature women, and that it's practically your namesake! Just a little more "O" and we're there! I am not a magazine girl, so it took an overly long line in the grocery market to have me notice (the woman in front of me in the self-check out was scanning tons of kool-aid packets...one...at...a...time. Took so long it actually gave me the giggles, which I had to control...this woman wasn't in the mood to see the humor). So I re-directed my gaze to the gum, candy, and magazines and voila! Grown up women! With wrinkles like mine! Looking the way I wish I did! And named after my dear friend I've never met! I was so excited to tell you all about it, and here you are, already in the know, and already sharing with the siestas. You are AMAZING!! Thanks again!

Wow, that really hit home. I was a gifted child - skipped up a grade, told I was so smart I'd have to be a doctor or a lawyer. I graduated from high school at 16 and college at 20. And now, at almost 37 years old and having spent the last ten years of my life as a SAHM, I still struggle with the path my life has taken and wondering what God wants me to do with the talents He has given me. I don't want to be the servant who buried the talent! High expectations without the tempering of praying for and skeeing God's will for our children are often preparing them for heartache.

Please pray for me to lead the women's ministry of our church humbly and well. It's been my job for 3 years now (and I'm only 28) and we have a large church. I want it to be great for God's glory, not as a medal on my own chest.

Amen Sister! Thank you so much for your thoughts, Beth. I call myself a "reformed perfectionist", God showed me over 20 years ago that I was not responsible for everything that happened and that it was OK to say NO! I still remember the first time I said NO to something I was asked to do at church. I almost called back to change my answer, but thanks to God I did not and my walk with Him has certainly benefited from that choice. It is so easy to become so caught up in doing things for Him that we don't spend time knowing Him. God had to teach me it was more important to "be" than "do"!

Beth, I just watched the Boise video. I couldn't help it, the praying made tears well up in my eyes. I also just finished video session one for Living Beyond Yourself here at the house because my mentor and I talked too long-imagine that! God has been working in our lives, and that very thought makes me emotional again! It is apparent to me that you and I have experienced some similar strongholds in our backgrounds, and YES, God has used you to let me know that I am not alone, that I do not have to live with them, and He has used you to spare me some grief-I am only 25. I could have lived my whole life without knowing that I could really be free. I listened to your Quick Word today too. I have read When Godly People Do Ungodly Things, and Breaking Free in college. Although, I should have read them more closely! I didn't realize how practical they were to me when I read them-I knew I needed to hear the message alright, but I didn't know how much I needed to hear the message. I am so glad God never gives up on us, Beth. I am so sorry for the long post too-I hope you understand. I'll do better, I promise.

You are very, very dear to me. Buddy would have been blessed to know-I think him and Marge know-that the legacy is continuing in us-those you serve. There are two scriptures God showed me yesterday and today over and over again through my quiet time, my mentor, and you, my "spiritual mom":) They are Zeph. 3:17 and 1 Cor. 2:9 Bless your heart, Beth!

Does anyone know or remember reading just how far the Israelites had to travel for the feasts? Did they travel from all of the country? And were the annual feasts one big series of different feasts at one time or did they travel several times throughout the year to the different ones? Meditating on my opening tomorrow night as we discuss the first week of Stepping Up. Help!

Sweet Beth:
I have this posted over my desk:

"Be careful not to conuse excellence with perfection. Excellence you can reach for, perfection is God's business."

I'm just wondering how many things have been unattempted or gone undone because we were afraid it wouldn't be perfect...what a word, girl.

Love & Blessings,
Georgia Jan

I have another song dedication!

For the former perfectionists, including myself!

"Martyrs and Thieves" by Jennifer Knapp off of her "Lay It Down" album-check the whole cd out while you're at it-it's earthy and real-I like that:) Oh, and don't forget to dance:)

Amazing! My best friend and I were
just pondering these very thoughts
as it relates to ministry and the
expectations we have of ourselves -
how we feel when we are not successful, not doing "a great work
for our Lord." Ya-da, ya-da. . .
Thank you Beth for this reminder.
I just pray you will always "walk
so humble with the Lord." It is
all about HIM no matter who we are or what He has given us to do. Love, prayers, and so many thanks
for your teaching. . .

"I'm great enough for the both of us."

That one line gave me so much freedom. As a 21 year old female, I struggle a lot with self-esteem issues and comparing myself to my friends. But realizing God is great enough for the both of us tells me I don't have to be great. I don't have to be greater than anyone else. I can just be and He does the great part all by Himself.

It's so funny, how things happen! I was thinking "WOW, I can't believe summer is around the corner, wonder what good books i can find to enjoy. And thought maybe, just maybe, LPM Bloggers will have a Post about good summer reads, and here was Beth's Post about what she is reading... well sort of... (can you post some of your favorites? and allow others to suggest?, I'm still looking).

Anyway, low and behold, God didn't give me a summer reading list thru your blog but convicted my heart.. yet once again! Praise Him, that he doesn't give up on us.
However, I was not relating to being a perfectionist.

No, I am not a slothly person, but I can point out the "perfect" faults of the people closest to me like no other! Judging all those perfectionist, of course, with the sincere hope that they would find freedom for the unending search for, in my judging case, the "perfect" wife, for my "perfect" brother.

Oh thank you Father, for your promise to refine us, and an answer to my daily prayer of searching my heart oh God and showing me our ways.
And... help my brother and fiance to know they've got it great!
To end with a Brad Paisley song, if you haven't heard it, it is so sweet- "It Did".
Just when you think its great... He loves you more.

Such a gift with words you have. WOW! That they're so true is pink icing on the cake.

I forwarded this post to my husband who very recently "lost" as a perfectionist. I hesitated, wanting him to figure things out for himself, but hoped this would help him to see things a bit differently. As someone who's life--and the well-being of our country--relies on his ability to be perfect, it is both humbling and necessary to look at things through God's eyes. Thank you for your timely word. I was elated to get an email back from him (he is TDY) where his voice rang in a different, joyful tone. I am just so grateful right now.

How hilarious - my quote on "perfection" had a typo in it:

"Be careful not to CONFUSE Excellence with Perfection...Excellence you can reach for, Perfection is GOD'S Business!

I love the freedom Christ offers in this paradox. Even when we seem insignificant in they eyes of the world, (or even the church) God sees what we do and it IS significant to him.

How insignificant I can feel each day bound by my daily tasks. But Christ sees those tasks differently than I do. Thank you Lord.

Beth - Thank you for reminding me of this truth. I am a stay at home mama of three children - ages 3,2, and 6 months. Many times when I survey my day, I feel so discouraged - feeling like nothing was accomplished. I just need to change my perspective and do all things to the glory of Christ - whether it is cleaning dishes or washing diapers. May God continue to give you the words that this weary world needs!! Blessings. Rita from Georgia.

Beth one of these days, I'll be able to make it through something you have written without the schizophrenic crying and laughing syndrome! You are such an amazing woman and have done a spectacular job sharing God's word! For me it is the imperfect that are perfect!
