Thinking About Death and Healing
Hey, my Darling Ones!
I'm sitting in the bed in my jammies with pillows propped up behind my back on a rare morning off. I've just finished my quiet time and on my second cup of coffee. (I'm obviously a little behind on the coffee.) Keith's still sound asleep and the dogs are in the backyard playing in some fresh mud. Oh, what they have done to my beautiful garden yard! But that's another story. My mind is full of other things and I know a few good friends who might help me process it.
It's Good Friday. I tend to have lots of heavy thoughts around this day every year. I do love Christmas so very much but I am far more moved by the season of reflection on the Cross of Christ and the celebration of our only true hope: His glorious resurrection. We are obviously so much surer of the timing of His Passion than we are His birth. We really can say, "Approximately this many years ago, this happened right around this exact time." Anniversaries are a powerful thing.
Yesterday I served at the memorial service of a fellow servant of Christ. She was just a few years older than me and her children, both boys, are the same ages of my girls. Belinda and I don't really have a family history together, though. We have a shared history of faith. Years ago, I suppose somewhere around 1990, I started teaching my first ungraded women's Sunday School class. I'd been teaching for years by that time but was a constant source of irritation to my department head because women came to the class who weren't the right age and some of them were even "single!" (To be fair, it really was supposed to be a class of young marrieds from 29-32.) I'd finally even been reported to my pastor, Brother John Bisagno, who called me into his office, laughed his head off and said, "I'm about to set you free." And Dayspring Class was born. Any woman of any age could come.
I cut my Biblical teeth on that class. I really did. I've told my beloved Curtis many times that there's nothing like being thrown out there to teach week after week after week. (He's doing that very thing, by the way.) Blowing it over and over then having the courage and the humility to get back up there again. It gets a communicator out of the habit of delivering a few overly-perfected speeches with just the right punch lines but a dwindling anointing - and pitches them out there into the world of high risk and steady criticism. Separates the men from the boys, so to speak. It is HARD WORK. Make no mistake. Don't ever wish for it. Do it only if you must because it is your God-given gift and not to use it would be disobedience. It's too hard otherwise and too much flesh can get tangled up in it. "Be ye not many teachers, because you will be more harshly judged," James warned us. But back to Belinda.
Early on in our class, this darling, petite blonde (bleached, like yours truly) entered our ranks with a personality that stole the hearts of every person in the class. Or, then again, it was her story that stole our hearts. She became quite a center of attention because she'd battled breast cancer several years before and it had come back with a vengeance. By the time I got to know Belinda, the doctors had told her that cancer had spread to her bones all the way from her skull to her knees. She was covered. Almost hopeless. Only that wild woman absolutely refused to give up. Her boys were still young and she intended to see them to manhood.
I have no idea why things work the way they do. I've seen mothers just as determined to raise their children yet die of cancer in only a few months. These things are only for the fathomless mind of God. We can't figure them out for the life of us. But if I were to offer a little conjecture, with His permission and patience, I'd tell you that maybe He gave Belinda those extra years (somewhat like Hezekiah) so that she could teach a tight-knit group of women how to put their faith where their big mouths were. She sought the Lord for Scriptures then told us what to pray for her and how to pray and that, if we were going to doubt, not to bother. And all of this in the most winsome way. She had the cutest personality ever. Several in our class nicknamed her Bubbles. I never could bring myself to do it. Too cool, maybe. But I tell you what I did call her. I called her a warrior. As I told them yesterday, I have never known a more courageous woman in all my life.
Some years later, I was asked to move to a different Sunday school hour to teach and I left my beloved Dayspring Class to the plans God had for them. Most of those women stayed intact and still study and worship together today. Belinda came to my new class many times but it was so large that it did not lend itself to the closeness we'd all enjoyed before. By this time, we no longer had the same need to pray for Belinda anyway. She was thriving. God had indeed given her what she'd so vehemently asked. There were others who moved to the top of our prayer lists.
Then about six months ago, at a Tuesday night Bible study, I saw Belinda at the altar weeping during praise and worship. (Our worship time is also an open-altar time and it is very, very special.) I went to her with haste and she looked up at me with an expression I'll never forget. "Beth, it's back. And if the Lord doesn't heal me, I'm going to die."
I felt it in my gut. I knew this time He was going to take her Home. That somehow her job was done. Though her assignment was undoubtedly much broader than this, God had used her to teach a group of women (of all ages, praise His Name!) how to pray with wild faith. Our lives had been changed forever. We'd seen first hand a little of what God could do.
Yesterday morning I grabbed my Bible, my black purse, and a prayer journal from 1994 that I'd taped a precious blonde woman's picture on and headed to my church. We celebrated Belinda Edgerton's life in a chapel packed full of people from all dimensions of her life. She'd made a mark on everybody from her coworkers at Shell Oil to her neighbors right there on her cul-de-sac. As I reflected on her life and thought about what I wanted to share, God brought the woman out of Luke 8 to my mind who pressed through the crowd to get to Jesus. She reached through the push-and-shove of public spectacle with the purity and simplicity of desperation. She somehow latched on to the hem of His garment and, let this fall afresh, she was healed.
We don't hear any more about that woman. Lord have mercy, she must have told her story a jillion times to anybody who would listen. But somewhere over there in Israel, her body has turned to ashes just like all her friends. It occurred to me that, while we are here on earth in these flesh-and-blood mortal bodies, all we can hope for is a hem of healing. Even if Belinda had been completely healed of her cancer, she would still have gotten sinus infections, stomach viruses, bad knees, and, one day, her sons still would have gone to her funeral. She just might have been a tad older. These bodies of ours are fashioned for a flash of time on this planet. God has healed all of us of many things but, in His great purposes, we can only grab the hem. Even a miracle of instant restoration from a terminal disease is still just a hem of healing.
One day we will trade the hem for the real Him. No more pressing through the crowd wondering if we're going to be among the few that see that kind of miracle. We will see Him. Jesus Christ, the risen King. We won't just touch the edge of His cloak. We will touch the God-man Himself in His spectacular immortal body but, significantly, one still bearing the scars of His visitation here. His wholeness is so utterly complete and infinitely perfect that we, upon the very sight of Him, will be made whole as well.
This, Beloved, is what we live for. Not for just another day here. But for that very day there.
Several months ago, Melissa had insisted upon going with me to have a dye test to follow up a suspicious mammogram. (No rumors please. I do not have breast cancer. Because my mother died with it, however, I never get the luxury of drama-less annual check-ups.) We were sitting in the waiting room and a rack was within arms reach offering all manner of brochure on various cancers. Melissa took one out after another and glanced over them, shaking her head. She looked up at me with that classic expression of hers and said, "Life is brutal, man."
I nodded.
We both sat silently for just a moment.
Then she said one of the most profound things I've ever heard.
"He knows it's scary to be us."
Yes, He does. Yes, He does. He does NOT take the fact lightly that we go through medical tests to see if we have a raging cancer. He does NOT take lightly that some of you are secretly fearing that the monster has come back. He does NOT take lightly that some of you are going through the cancer treatments of your own children. I had to pause and put my hand over my mouth on that one. Holding back the tears.
Son of David, have mercy on us! You know it's scary to be us! It's almost too much here, Lord. It's almost too much.
And the thunder crashes in the heavens and the earth grows dark in the middle of the afternoon and a man, beaten to a bloody pulp, cries from a cross between two thieves, "It is finished!"
And death is overcome.
One day, Sweet Darling. ONE DAY. We will trade that hem for the real Him and there will be no more sickness. No more death. No more sadness. We will all be healed.
Bliss.
BLISS.

You know, I just searched frantically through lesson 3 of my Beleiving God workbook to see if your friend Belinda was the same one whom you had mentioned in the lesson. I am almost positive it is. Now I want to cry...This is totally random, but thank you so much for writing that lesson. You have no idea how much it has helped me. About a week or so after I completed that lesson I attendend the funeral of someone about whom I had said "Surely, if He would heal anyone it would be her." And it was only because of what I learned from you through those lessons that I didn't go into grief and depression over the entire situation.
I loved the end of this post also. Thank you for sharing!
I so needed to hear what Melissa said, that He knows it's scary for us. I'm not battling cancer, but I had two miscarriages last year and am pregnant again. I am really excited, and believing God for this pregnancy. However, today, Satan is trying to use the fear of the doctor's visits and ultrasound threatens to scare me to death. Thank you Lord that You know.
thank you so much for these words...as i write this my BFF's (of 30+ yrs)mother is dying of cancer...not expected to live through may, probably won't make it to the end of april, if that long. she and her sweet family led me and my family to the Lord and then, to the value of Bible study. there IS a crown awaiting her in heaven with our names on it. i. just. know. it. but it is still hard, i know my friend and her family are afraid. i am too. but thanks for your words, today especially...they remind me that there. is. much. hope. amen.
2 Corinthians 4:7,13-14
But we have this treasure in jars of clay to show that this all-surpassing power is from God and not from us.
It is written: "I believed; therefore I have spoken." With that same spirit of faith we also believe and therefore speak, because we know that the one who raised the Lord Jesus from the dead will also raise us with Jesus and present us with you in his presence.
Amen Blessed Good Friday and Resurrection Sunday
May Jesus come quickly, we long for Him. Beautiful words about a lady who must have been a woman of substance. Easter blessings to all my siestas!
Always so timely. A dear friend and sister in Christ passed away on Wednesday of breast cancer. Michelle was 37. While my heart breaks for her family, I know that she is spending this Easter season in the loving arms of the Father. Praise Him!
Dear Beth, I am sorry to hear of the passing of your friend and my heart and prayers go out to you and her family and all who will miss this precious lady.
I think often of your Daniel study where you taught on on of the videos about trials. That sometimes we are delivered from, sometimes deliverd through, sometimes delivered "IN" meaning we go home to be with Jesus. A hospice nurse used the analogy with me that sometimes the illness is the "vehicle" by which we travel home. It's still hard and sad and I'm glad Jesus KNOWS how hard it is for us. Praise to Him for what He endured for us so that we look forward to that time to be with Him and that these temporary dwelling places (our bodies) will be traded in for the ones He has prepared for us. Blessings on your family and thank you for sharing your heart. In Jesus' Love Kathy Knoblock
Bad day. Bad News came. I hope He really does know how scary it is.

Those words speak to the heart of things, Beth. Thank you for taking time this morning to write to us what God had placed on your heart to share!
Your mention of Luke 8 reminded me that I needed to tell you about something cool! I wrote last week that my husband has been delayed in coming home, and the good news is that even though I still don't know when he'll be home, God has provided all the joy and contentment I could have hoped for as we wait. Waiting is such a great skill to be well-versed in, although I would never chose to have situations in which I have to practice!
I went to the simulcast last year when the topic was Luke 8 and sowing the word- all the time, as well as during seasons of tears. The simulcast was just days before my husband left. And I wrote a couple of months ago about how God has been reinforcing that message to me. Now I'm convinced that one of the reasons my husband wasn't home yet this week was because God wanted to bring me full circle.
I've been reading through the Bible (since last year, so I'm a little behind, but not in God's timing!)and this week I got to Luke 8. I felt Him saying "We're going to end this thing were we started it. And I'm going to remind you about the things I've taught you and things I've showed you during the time you've been alone with just me."
I couldn't believe His graciousness to me. Even though I've read Luke 8 several times in the past few months, the timing on that day made me love Him just so much and I am so grateful that He cares enough to see me through this difficult time and to not let it end until He'd brought me full circle!
Thank you Lord that you speak to our hearts in such personal ways again and again! May He do it for all us during this special season this weekend. Happy Resurrection day to all of you!
Love,
Rebekah
What a beautiful and strong woman she must have been! I wish I could have had the pleasure of knowing her! I just recently lost a coworker to cancer ( I believe it was breast cancer.) Anyway she came to see us about three weeks before she passed away. She was still beautiful and happy! All of us who worked with her and knew her will never forget her sweet personality. God Bless!
Track no.5 of Chris Tomlin's latest cd talks about THAT day! Just had me weeping and raising my hands the day I heard it, driving through the mountains in NC. Thank you so much for this sweet reminder of the temporariness(is that a word..temporaryness?" of any healing we receive on this earth...oh the joy of the hope of Heaven..I cannot wait for that day. Thank you for allowing God to use you, Miss Beth. You are just my favorite speaker ever. So blessed to call you siesta!
"When he had received the drink, Jesus said, "It is finished." With that, he bowed his head and gave up his spirit."
John 19:30
Jesus paid a debt we could not pay. I am so glad we do not have to understand grace all we must do is receive it. Thank you, Lord Jesus, for giving us the hope of heaven.
I love you, dear Beth.
Blessings,
MW
Thank you for sharing this story. I dream of the day when there is no more hurt, pain, tears, heartache, trauma and the list goes on and on. I hold onto that day when we are all in heaven and rejoicing ALL THE TIME!! Having a daughter who is 9 years old who has a severe brain injury that she was not born with, this is what I hold onto. She will walk again, she will praise the name of Jesus, she will be WHOLE!! Your friend is whole and dancing in the streets of gold. What a party to be at.
Have a blessed Easter! He is risen and ALIVE!!

Thank you for sharing. I'm standing with a sweet and funny friend who is battling cancer and she is a warrior, also. May God give my sweet Lori the years to raise her children, too.
What a blessing it is to read the story of this warrior. To God be the glory.
What a wonderful tribute! Thank you for sharing it.
Thank you for not being disobedient when God called you to reach women.
I pray for a wild faith prayer life like Belinda - what a wonderful legacy she left behind.
Happy Easter!
Oh to be women who live such a life that we will leave a legacy of faith to the next generation, not for our glory or benefit mind you, but for HIS NAME to be glorified.
Lord let us not forget your sacrifice and your VICTORY over death.
"What a day that will be when MY Jesus I shall see, What a day glorious day that will be."
Happy Easter Siestas!
Dearest Beth that was beautiful. I have no other words just beautiful God gave you those words I'm touched.
Oh, what beautiful thoughts. I can't wait for no more sickness. My families had a virus all week that just won't seem to go away. And now, I'm just weak. I can't explain it. I just don't feel right. Today and yesterday. And I have so much work to do!
Amen...Come Lord Jesus... come quickly for us... it is almost more than some of us can bear anymore.

Beth...thank you for sharing that...agree with anonymous who said that her mascara was not Beth-proof. I really needed that today.
I hope you and your family have a blessed Easter weekend!
Love you Mama Beth!

Bethie,
Not only will my fibromyalgia and Rheumatoid Arthritis be gone but I suspect I will have a FULL HEAD OF THICK, LUSCIOUS, REAL (YES REAL) BLONDE HAY-ER! (hair for those who didn't grow up in Texas)
What a great message for a Good Friday.
Happy Easter!
Jan
Thank you! I needed to hear that today. God is not finished using your friend to inspire and set an example. What a beautiful story of courage and great faith.
What an AWESOME GOd we have have!
Ok I thought I was ok but I am in a puddle of tears right now. MY beloved Mom went home to heaven a week ago today. She is celebrating this EAster with Jesus her savior. My Mom was a 17 year survivor of breast cancer and that is not what took her home. She fought that battle and won to God be the Glory. My mom's final battle was just with a heart and a body that wore out. She went to sleep last Thursday night and after snoring her way through the night opened her eyes in heaven at 5 am Friday . My prayer for the last few years has been for her to be able to go home just like this. I so did not want my mom to suffer any more. I am going to miss her tremendously but I know that she is in heaven perfectly healed and thrilled to be with her Lord. Beth Thank you for your words they touched me tonight Patty pierce

I am sitting here weeping my head off with tear of sadness mixed in with tears of joy and praise and not a tissue in sight. My goodness, Beth, can you give us a little warning like this post requires a tissue, maybe 2 tissue
or a box.
What a beautiful tribute. I can think of no greater way to be remembered than as a "Warrior". One day I hope it will be said of me, thou I've long ways to go.
Angie says, Come, Lord Jesus, come.
Peace to her family. Thank you Beth for sharing. BLISS.
thank you
I too feel this day a little heavy. Not in sadness but in reverence, and I get so annoyed when my husband, only because he has to live with me, doesn't feel every ounce of the same sentiment I do. I'm starting a tradition for our family too; we're going to watch the Passion of the Christ every year, even if it's me sitting there by myself, I'm leading by example. Somehow baking cookies while we watch isn't appropriate either. It's to remember what Jesus did for us and watch it, really watch it, if no other time of year we really sit still for 2 hours and FEEL it and be upset by it.
I also have to have that dye test next week-and God bless Him (God), I felt the same thing the other day Melissa did; I just got it-that He knows it's tough being us sometimes. He's such the epitome of looking you in the eyeball and saying "I know. I know."
It was raining so hard here today that it was hailing and the sky was dark. It was about 4:30 in the afternoon and I couldn't help but think that these might have been similar weather conditions from that fateful moment one Friday on Golgatha (sp?).
What if this Sunday was the day the Bridegroom came back for His bride? Oh glory!
Beautifully said...
Beautiful!
I am truly humbled on this day as well. Words can't even express how I feel.
One day...
Wishing you a blessed Easter,
Anne in MO
Thank you, thank you for this.
Miss B, Just sobbing. Thank you for such an extraordinary reminder today. Those of us with sick children struggle to live in the NOW and not the what if. We are all terminal until we're eternal. Thank you for reminding me that no matter what comes for my son this night...we'll be together in eternity and his heart will be healed. Thank you God for Belinda...may her boys and family find comfort in all things eternal.
Beautiful words for our hearts today. I know so many people going through the greatest trials of their lives. Somehow your words say it all. You have a way with words like no other.
I love you dearly!
Teresa
Oh, Beth. I needed that. I lost a dear friend with small children to this exact kind of cancer a year and a half ago. I ask why all of the time. I never thought about it this way.
Thank you Jesus for loving us enough to speak to us in ways that we need to hear! We will trade the hem for the Him!!!!
Moved to tears. No words, just tears. I am undone. Blessed be the Name of Jesus...Blessed be His Glorious Name!!! Hallelujah!!!
Thank you, Beth. I was missing a Good Friday service tonight. That filled in quite nicely. Thank you for church at the computer.
I am sorry to hear about your friend - I have been thinking about what you wrote and I am reminded of the scripture that says we were fearfully and wonderfully made. We hear that verse alot. But it is a cool verse in that it says that we were made in fear. We were made wonderful and we were made in fear. Yes, He did know we would have bad days and He knew just how bad we would mess up our lives and He knew how hard we would hurt when we messed up and when friends are hurt and all the rest and yes He does know that it is scary to be us. I love that verse - He made us in fear but yet He made us! I am so glad He did. HE is a great example of not giving into fear. We would have missed you and me and everyone else if He had!! Ok the other thing you talked about that struck a cord with me was the Woman with the issue of blood. I wrote a poem/song after hearing a great sermon on it and it - the poem/song - is not the best written song and it needs help, but I love it and here it is, I konw you like poems - hope you like this one. Have a GREAT Easter with your babies! Remember to pray for missionaries who are over seas and for their Grandma's who dont get to watch them find their eggs or dress up in their new Easter Focks and outfits. I am missing my 4 tonight - can you tell!! But I am thankful they will be home in about 50 days and then I will get all their sugar. You get lots this weekend. Praying for you and yours, Vicki
Changed by the Touch of His Garment
Vicki Sandifer
The crowd gathered around the Savior
Glad He was back in their town
A man cried out, Lord heal my daughter
A woman made her way, facedown.
Changed by the touch of Your garment
Cleansed by the blood of the Lamb
Jesus we come to you broken
And leave by the Grace of I AM.
Separated from the Lord by her weakness
In her body her sin was revealed
Kneeling she met with her Savior
Just one touch and the woman was healed.
Changed by the touch of Your garment
Cleansed by the blood of the Lamb
Jesus we come to you broken
And leave by the Grace of I AM.
Man is sick with out Jesus
Remember you can touch Him anytime
We all need to touch His garment
It was for us on the cross He did climb.
Changed by the touch of Your garment by
Cleansed the blood of the Lamb
Jesus we come to you broken
And leave by the Grace of I AM.
Lord we are found in this story
We bring our frailness and humanity
Please heal the sin in our body and soul
Oh Lord led us to Your beauty.
Changed by the touch of Your garment
Cleansed by the blood of the Lamb
Jesus we come to you broken
And leave by the Grace of I AM.
Oh Beth, I do love you.
Thank you for these words today. Thank you for the encouragement and hope they bring to me - and to us all.
My dear Sweet Beth, Once again the Lord has used you to put things in perspective for me. Mine is not one of cancer but one of a daily grind with Insulin Dependent Diabetes. Not only me, but my youngest daughter (11 diagnosed at age 3), too. My husband also has Diabetes but he does not have to take insulin. I can not begin to tell you of the frustration we have experienced at having to test our blood sugars through out the night or be in the middle of doing something and had to stop because of our blood sugars-high or low.
We pray for God to heal us. We pray for Him to take it away. We pray against the complications of blindness, kidney damage, neuropathy. We fear and dread the onset of any one of the complications listed above. Playing the balancing act is often elusive. To be just right is a rare moment of celebration and then it is back to the daily grind. To hear the words "For the rest of your life" is a tough pill to swallow. To realize that one day we will trade all of that for Him is joy unspeakable and full of glory. To be whole and healthy-wow-that is unfathomable to me. But oh my, it is BLISS. Nothing here could ever compare to my Jesus. There are no words to express what I am feeling inside. Oh what joy it is to be His child.
I did not know your beloved Belinda but I did have my own beloved prayer warrior, Emma. The last time I saw Emma, she was in hospice care. I knew that it was going to be the last time I would see her on earth. Before I left the hospice home, Emma and I did what had brought us together in the first place, we prayed together. I wept as we prayed. She went home to be with Jesus a month after that visit. She is there, with Him, waiting for me.

I am overcome...covered with goose bumps and shuddering with shivers. This, after an evening spent at our church for our Good Friday tenebrae service, where I wept and wept.
Thank you.

All I can say is Praise Jesus. Tonight & this weekend, my church is doing an Easter drama about the life, death and resurrection of Christ and PRAISE JESUS when it was done and the invitation was given...6 new family members came forward in confession. Even if one had come it would've been worth it but to have 6 new souls added to the Kingdom of our Lord and Savior is such a blessing.
And I know that I too look forward to the day our Beloved Jesus returns. What a joyous day it will be and until then, I pray that I can be a part of His Destiny to help others be added to HIS kingdom.
Thank you Beth for your passion and love for our Lord and Savior. It is contagious and I know it is the same at my blessed church and that is what makes me seek HIM even more.
God bless! I love you!
Christy
Oh what a Savior!
Our God is so awesome and I so needed to read your entry. I was sittiing at my computer sending out notices of a dear friend's death that occurred suddenly just hours ago. I am numb and can't imagine how life will be without our dear Hunter. My children call him Uncle Bubble and he has been my husband's best friend since highschool. Oh Lord forgive me for not witnessing harder to him and always thinking there will be tomorrow. I don't know how I will ever forgive myself without God's amazing grace.
Thank you, Beth.
I've thought about Heaven and seeing Jesus in person a lot in the last month and a half. You see, my courageous beautiful 17-year old niece finally lost her battle with brain cancer. I loved her like I love my own two girls. Isn't it funny how real Heaven becomes when you know someone who is there? Even in our grief, our family is able to rejoice that Hannah traded the hem for Him!
Thank you so much for this sweet Beth. I love it that you are always, always so real.
We have a genetic disease in our family that threatens three generations of us. To say that life can be hard doesn't begin to describe it.
That said, it is the knowing that He knows, that He cares, that we can trust Him to be all that He has promised to be that brings us a peace and joy we never thought possible.
Bliss, yes, bliss.
Thank you for your love of God and sharing it with us.
Happy Easter! It is Friday, but Sunday is comeing!
It is finished. Hallelujia - it is finished. He did it!! Except for those that will be called to meet Him in the clouds, we will all fight death, whether it be a hard fight or a simple passing in the night, but praise God, we have already won!! Up from the grave He arose with a mighty triumph over His foe!!!
Tears fall from my eyes as I read this story . A story that right now is so close to my heart.
My sister in law was diagnosed with a rare form of cancer over a year ago. She's only 38 and they (my brother & her) have a one year old daughter. Cutest little thing you ever saw. They have only been married 2 years. She is riddled with tumors. And this week we found out that there are tumors in her lungs.
People ask me if she knows Jesus. She says she does but I can't really tell. I hope that doesn't sound judgemental. I really need to know without a shadow of a doubt that she knows Him. You know what I mean?
She's a strong girl. The kind that is capable of taking care of herself. It's hard for her to let down the walls.
Sometimes we guard our hearts from the very thing we need. We think we protect our hearts from pain but just the opposite is true. We protect our hearts right out of salvation, healing, love.
It's bad enough to have her dealing with cancer (according to the clinic in New York City, I cant remember the name, they only see 2 cases like hers a year) but I want her to KNOW Jesus, to KNOW He can heal her. And obviously to have her in heaven with the rest of my family.
tough times right now, tough times
I rarely ever leave comments here, but this time just felt the need to share something. One of my dearest friends was diagnosed with breast cancer just this week, and at first I was shocked and so saddened. But, then I remembered that we are to have an eternal perspective--we are only travelers here--our home is in heaven. As I prayed for her, for some reason, I was reminded of being back in school as a child, and always being so thrilled when we got to go home early--you know--unexpectedly shortened days, unexpected power outages, impending snowstorms, etc that would, on those rare occasions, allow us to pack up our stuff and go home early. Those days were always sweet. It was not that I did not like school, but learning the lessons were often grueling and tiresome and, well, hard. Anyway, as I was praying for my friend, the overwhelming thought came to my mind--"Does this mean that Kathy gets to go home EARLY"? Because even though, in earthly terms, that sounds bad, in reality, going home early can be an unexpected, unplanned for, blessing. No more hard lessons to learn, no more hard tests, no more earthly anything. Not that I want my friend to go home early, in fact, I pray fervently for her healing. But, in some kind of eternal way (not a death-wish way), I am envious of those who are going home early while the rest of us continue to learn the lessons. I think it is an eternal longing to see our Lord face to face that we all have inside us.
Blessings,
Lynda
Dear " Anonymous Siesta" that wrote to me concerning having the thyroid biopsy next week.....THANK YOU! I don't know if you will ever see this comment or not but maybe the Lord will lead you back so you can. I can't tell you how your post touched me. I felt it was straight from the Hand of God! Thank you so much for your encouraging words! They were especially sweet knowing you had been through the exact same thing just last week! I wish you had left your name so we could correspond but I respect your wishes!
Beth, this post today has really helped so many! I don't usually read a lot of the comments but just can't stop reading these! A sweet, sweet siesta (above) came to my blog from here and left me the sweetest encouraging note! I know God put that on her heart. And it made me think about what Melissa said...that God knows how scared we get....and I think He used your blog to send someone to help me not be afraid!
May God bless you and give you a blessed Easter weekend!

Belinda sounds like my good friend who was just diagnosed for the second time with cancer. The first time was breast cancer and she fought it with dignity and courage while the rest of us stood in awe of her as no matter how bad it got, she pushed on through. Three weeks ago, she found out it was back, and like Belinda she has two teenagers that she loves like no other. This woman never misses a ballgame, a wrestling match or anything else her kids do and always has her camera in her hand. She is the first to plan the sports banquets or church functions for the teens, or direct Bible School or you name it, this woman is there and in the middle of it and always with a smile on her face. Once again, she is determined to conquer this disease and we are all praying that God shines through her once again. The treatments this time are taking a huge toll on her and making her so sick. Please pray for her and her family as her sister passed away four years ago with cancer as well so it is especially hard on her mother to have to watch a second daughter go through this and face the possibility of losing her too. She truly is a Godly woman who has taught me so much about life just by how she lives her own.
Sweet Beth - there aren't any words to respond to this beautiful tribute with. Such truth. Such reality.
Thanks for ALL you do in the name of the Lord.
Beth
Thank you for this post, Beth. I lost my husband in January - and you are right - sometimes it is almost too much. All I could do on this Good Friday is thank Jesus, over and over, for his death on the cross. Because of his death and resurrection - my husband's life was redeemed and he was an amazing witness to what the power of God can do in a life. And I know that he is with Jesus now. And I know I WILL see him again. No more death, no more sadness - yes Beth, it will definitely be bliss.
Oh my, blessings and love
Very powerful tribute.
Pressing through the crowds to touch His hem for now ...
No need to post this, but I sat on the phone with one friend today as she discussed where to bury her unborn infant who has a fatal abnormality and now am baby sitting 3 precious children for a friend whose marriage is collapsing, they are 5, 2 and 2 months... (these is a weird and rare day!) and all day I felt so far from Him and couldn't figure out why but you have helped me to see. I was wishing these things weren't so bad that I just wasn't trusting Him with me! Oh for that Bliss!
I know how much I adore you guys with my "little" eyes, how much more our father must adore you three Himself :)
You would not believe how this message has touched me. For starters I recently turned 30 and have never been sick in my life. However for the past 2 weeks I have been really sick I have lost about 14 pounds and my Dr thinks I have had some virus. I still don't feel 100% and I have worried myself to death thinking it could be something bad. I know this sounds crazy but at the same time it has brought me to a whole new level with Jesus. For the first time I have really had to trust in Him and he has shown me how I need to grow up! I have so many fears like praying out-loud, raising my hands, and being baptized simple thing like that and I know God is wanting me to step out of my comfort zone but I just can't seem to, I do love Jesus so much more and appreciate what all he has done for me I never really understood the pain and the suffering he went through for me and it just about killed me when my eyes were opened to how things really are and how selfish I have been. I hope he knows how truly sorry I am and that I do love Him with a whole new love. I don't think I had ever given Jesus all of me and I realize a part of me just won't do. I have struggled with the whole Jesus thing "Is he really real" and I can't help to think that this was God's way to show himself to me. I have read so many scriptures in these past few days and I am believing that he is going to heal me from whatever has been making me sick and from all these fears and worries. So my sweet siesta mama I am asking you to please pray for me that God would heal me and get me back on my feet so I can be a better servant for Him. I am going to do better! I usually don't write this much because I'm terrible at it and I am a horrible speller!!!! Thank you for everything you do for us you are soooo special to me and I love you more than pigs love slop!!!!!!!!!!

Beth,
I am that mother you spoke of today. My sweet 8 year old, Tucker, is fighting his 3rd cancer.
Like you said, "It is almost too much", but I know God loves him more than I do. I cling to that fact with all that I am.
Thank you for reminding me that He knows how scary it is.
Love,

Beth, thank you for sharing! I can't help but remember 1 year ago exactly. We had a dear friend dying from liver cancer and my husband had been sharing the good news with him for many days with no avail.
It was good Friday the day he chose to make his life altering decision to follow Jesus. I remember being at our Good Friday service that evening with tears streaming down my face as I thought about the angels singing because of our friend's decision just hours earlier. And then...early Easter morning we got word that he had gone home to Jesus and what a day of rejoicing for our risen Savior and our friend basking in the love of his new Savior that was!
Oh, what a day that will be! He has risen indeed!!
NW mom- we look forward to seeing you in Portland next week Beth!
Very touching and humbling. Thank you for sharing with us.
One siesta mentioned her children being in God's protective arms. I love feeling like I'm in the arms of God. When I'm scared or worried or sad or happy all the same. I just wish I felt that more often. I pray that we all feel like we're being held tight in the arms of our wonderful Father this Resurrection weekend.
Lots of love to you all :)
A timely post for me. Went to a funeral this morning at our church of a 48 year old man from our church who died of a fast spreading melanoma. Having the funeral on Good Friday was special I think for this man of God who knew the end was coming soon and was ready to be with Jesus only being concerned about the wife and children and mother he was leaving behind. Today Hank is rejoicing in Heaven and no longer in pain.
Hallelujah! Jesus is risen!

Oh the joy of finally getting to touch the Him! So many times I long to reach out and touch Him here, needing to feel the touch of His gentle hand. To climb up into His Holy lap and let Him hold me, whisper in my ear "Daddy's here, it's ok now" Thanks Beth for this sweet story of hope and resurrection. God you are my sword, my sheild, the lifter of my head! Praise you forever and ever. Show yourself big this resurrection morn! Carla Lee
What a totally moving post!
Belinda was blessed to have such a group of people that stood with her!

may I surrender like a broken child to Him to know who He is, why He really came for me, if only it was for me. May i know Him like these others know Him. May I be willing to be a broken child, humble, Oh please, help me God.
Amen Beth!
That is all I can say after reading your beautiful post. Thank you.
I am touched, for lack of a better word, after reading each and every post. I'm surprised, but not, in that almost every person on here has experienced this in their own families.

Hi Miss Beth,
I am so sorry to hear about your friend's passing. However, we all know that she is now in Jesus' arms, and free from all pain; praise be to God !
Please tell her family that this crazy Siesta lady up in southern Wisconsin is praying for them all to have their own individual healthy grieving processes with the Lord.
And, oh my, do I know about the grieving process~ That is because my dear Dad passed away on March
24, 2008 from complications due to end stage Leukemia that was only diagnosed 7 months beforehand.
However, I have been thinking about him all year long, but yes, the tears really DO stop falling after a while ... Praise God ~
However, Easter last year was on March 23rd, and my Dad passed away the day after that, so I will always remember him during Easter-time. And, yes, I miss him terribly, but we knew that he simply could not get better here on Earth, and knew that Jesus was 'calling him Home'.
I was asking your main resource lady [D.R.; via E-mail] a week or so ago what she might recommend that I read, so that I can concentrate on my Dad's being in Heaven with our precious Lord Jesus, rather than feeling sad that he is not here with us now. Anyhow, she strongly recommended Randy Alcorn's book "Heaven" to me, along with another that I cannot recall the name of right now. And, this book just arrived in the mail yesterday, so I am looking forward to reading it.
Just a thought for anyone else 'out there' who is grieving the loss of a dear loved one. However, since I haven't read it yet, I cannot honestly say that I personally endorse this book myself. But, I trust this other lady's judgement, as I know that she is a very precious godly woman.
Have a blessed Easter, to all my dear Siestas, including you and your family, Miss Beth !!!
Love in Christ Jesus,
Jennifer

P.s. If I am not mistaken, wasn't Belinda written about in your "Believing God" study, as one of 'God's miracles' ???
"What a day that will be, when my Jesus I shall see, when I look upon His face, the One who saved me by His grace. Then He'll take me by the hand, lead me to that glorious land, what a day, glorious day that will be!"
Yes...BLISS!
Today has been one of those "I hope Jesus comes back soon" days! So, thank you so much mama beth...thank you for that reminder of hope!
I can't wait for the day when all this is over...and we become who we were meant to be.
I've come back to read this one three times today . . . and every time I'm moved to tears to think about "He knows it's scary to be us." It's what I needed to hear right now.
I love thinking about how one day we will trade just touching the hem of Jesus garment for Him. I can hradly wait for that day!
This is just what I needed to hear today. Not because I am currently going through a similar situation but because my fear of going through something of this nature is often overwhelming - especially lately. I just need to STOP IT and trust God's plan for my life and the lives of those I love.
Thank you so much for sharing.
Thank you so much for this lovely blog. About 6 weeks ago, we found out my mom's cancer has come back and they've given her 3 - 6 months to live. And now the cancer isn't growing. So who knows. I'm not going to try to figure it all out. God alone knows the number of our days and I'm treating each day I have with my mom as a gift.
Thank you for the reminder and the encouragement, dear sister.
Thank you for this. Ten years have brought a lot of heartache. First i was raped by knifepoint, the I lost my a dear friend (26 yrs old) in car accident, then I lost my grandmother, then my dad passed away from a disease called Pulmonary Fibrosis. He was waiting for a lung transplant and caught pneumonia and died. Then , four months after dad died, I lost my mother suddenly. She died from a blood clot going to her lungs. Then i lost my other grandmother. My husband and I have been dealing with infertility for many years. We found out in November that he has Burkitt's Lymphoma. We are in the midst of heavy duty inpatient chemo - going on 5th month of this.
You have no idea how important it is to remember that we will suffer here, but he will never leave us. We will hurt but he hurt first. He hurt so we could have a way out of the pain. Thank you Jesus for dying willingly so that we could have life and freedom. Thank you that you took our diseases upon yourself .
Lord, have mercy on us.
You touched my heart with this post. I am sitting here crying. Thank you so much for sharing.
Amen Sister, Amen. Preach On!
Thank you Mrs. Beth for your words. My dad is suffering with cancer right now and like most others his future is uncertain. My prayer is that my dad will find God through this awful ordeal and that God will heal him spiritually! Your friend sounds like a true warrior and your testomoniy of her has absolutely made a lasting impact on my life! Praise His Holy name!
May everybody be pleased this Easter!
Crissy
Thank you for your insight, especially on Good Friday.
Beth, Thank you for this post. Today would have been my mother's 62nd birthday. She's only been gone four weeks. I have found comfort in the very thought that she is now whole in HIM! Praise the Lord and Jesus come quickly!
Love,

Dear Beth,
I write this from a hospital bed in the midst of my own struggle with the breast cancer "beast". Your words have encouraged me! I am blessed to be at a good spot in my treatment, although physically my body isn't doing well, spiritually and emotionally I am very blessed. The other night when I was admitted to the hospital, I did't have my glasses with, so when I took out my contacts I had very limited vision. So, as I laid in bed, I thought "darn, wish I had more scripture memorized to give me comfort"...but I than remembered 2 Corinthians 1: 3-4… “God is our merciful Father and the source of all comfort. He comforts us in all our troubles so that we can comfort others. When they are troubled, we will be able to give them the same comfort God has given us.” Every day I wake, I thank God for the miracle of breath and pray that He can use me for his purpose today. Blessings and thank you!
Thank you. I needed that. Life IS so scary and we spend so much time trying to act like we're not scared. But He knows, He knows. I too have a long line of breast cancer in my family, and I try so hard to be calm during those mammograms...but I always have that little voice in the back of my mind saying, "this might not be a good visit." I too have a different "feeling" come over me during the Easter holiday. One of sadness mixed with elation,a very difficult emotion to put a label on. It breaks my heart to think of Him being treated the way He was, but yet overjoyed that He actually loved me that much to go through an indescribable torture. Thank you again for sharing your story about your friend. I think we can all think of someone like that in our lives! What a Blessing.
With tears flowing I say AMEN!
Thank you.
I love you.
Happy Easter.
Home FREE indeed !! Lovein it.
Love Jesus Love you all.
wow. i cannot thank you enough for taking the time to write/post this, Beth.
My best friend sent me the link to this entry in the middle of the night - as she is watching her son, age 8, fight cancer for the third time. His cancer has not come back, they are three, different cancers - and he is 8. What are the odds? Let me just say, I know that God used this in my friends life - last night! We are all praying for his healing, and it will come. Maybe here, but forsure in that GLORIUS PLACE THAT WE ARE WAITING FOR! Check out their amazing story at caringbridge.org. The boys name is tuckerbeam. If you read the entry from Monday, April 6th, YOUR LIFE WILL BE CHANGED, and you will see first hand (I am sure once again)how the power of God and HIS WORD are the only things that can carry you through. Thank you.
Amen Beth. Thank you Jesus.
Dear Beth.... Thank you for posting this... You are soooo right... God doesn't take it lightly... and I am so glad that He doesn't!
Please be in prayer for so many who were touched yesterday by the tornado that hit Murfreesboro TN... This is just a few minutes from my own home, and many of my own friends lost homes or had severe damage. God has been good, but there are a lot of hurting folks in our town this Easter weekend.
Thanks!
We are in the midst of cancer treatment for my dear Mother and would love to print out this blog. Is there any way to get this in a "printable" form? I'm not very computer savvy and can only get the first few paragraphs. This message was so powerful that I just want to share it with my family.
My daughter and I have been in 3 of your bible studies and always learn so much. You are a wonderful communicator....
Thanks you!
Praise His Name! Praise HIM!!!
Thank you dear one for sharing this story. A dear friend of mine's brother is in the fight against cancer and I have forwarded your message to her, in hopes it will be of help to their entire family.
Bless you and yours this Most Holy weekend and always,
Kaye
Matthew 21:22
Beth,
Thank you for your words! I didn't read them until Saturday, but they reminded me of my sweet religion teacher. Her name was Georgeen and she loved Jesus more than anyone I ever knew. When she was diagnosed with cancer, many years later, I sent her a letter telling her how much she influenced my spiritual life, because her joy in Jesus was so contagious! She called and thanked me for letting her know that she had made a difference in someone's life and then she said something so profound - I will never forget it! She said, " I had plans to starting working on retreat teams (by then she was in her 70's)but God had other plans for me. Do you know how many hurting people sitting in a cancer treatment center having chemo don't know how much Jesus loves them? He puts me by someone who needs encouragment and needs to hear about HIM each time I go for a treatment. He has blessed me to make me able to be the one to tell them." Wow! to have an attitude like that about cancer! Sorry this is so long, but just had to share her story. She has since went home and I know she is rejoicing at His feet!

Oh Beth - I have tears running down my face and my heart is thumping wildly - I am so moved by the depth of this post. God's gifting to you with writing/teaching is multiplied over and over to each of us - and I thank you for your ministry of equipping us sojourning siestas.
Oh what a homegoing service I imagine that Belinda had. She is there, Beth. The hem has become the Him - I LOVE THAT!!! May God be with Belinda's sons - I too have 2 sons the age of your girls and prayed many a time to see them raised up into the men they are today. Thank you, Father.
Speaking of your girls - they are PRECIOUS and I know you know, but every Mama needs to hear it MOORE!
Amanda and her wonderful gifts to this blog and the way she is mothering your grandbabies. She is a beautiful young minister's wife, bless her Lord.
Melissa's depth and insight into the "Holy Writ" slay me. I could SQUEEZE her to pieces. Beautiful she is. "He knows it's scary to be us." Indeed He does. Bless her Father, as she continues her education.
I have a sister in heaven. She died at age 25, I was 27 - it's been almost 24 years and I miss her every day. All childhood memories I share with her. (Melissa's post with the pictures of Easter dresses and hats took me back to those days.) I KNOW I WILL SEE HER AGAIN - GLORY TO MY RESURRECTED SAVIOR!
And until then - my heart will go on singing, until then with JOY I will carry on,
Love you so,
GJ

Today is my birthday and a day to contemplate the past, present and future. Thanks for reminding us to value each and every day as Belinda did as well as reminding us that our hope is not here but in Christ and our eternal life! And we have a great spa trip to look forward to (trading in these bodies for new bodies!)
Love ya!
Beth, Thank you for this post...brought tears and a lump to my throat.
He knows it's hard to be us in the midst of:
Infertility
A divorce you don't want
A lost job after 25 years
A faith that's under attack
So many things in life are hard; but we can KNOW our God is faithful and He is good. I LOVE Easter this year; I am ready for a celebration in the midst of the hardness of life. I want to celebrate Him!
Worthy is the Lamb!
Worthly is the Lamb!
Happy Resurrection Day...
Joni Leahy
Dear Beth,
Again, you have a message for me and for the day!! Thankful to Our Father for such blessings He gives when we don't understand and it is so hard to be us!
Thank you for keeping on serving!!!!!
Irene
Glory to God
Have a blessed Resurrection Day !

WOW! Thank you Beth for sharing Belinda's story with us. My heart has been touched deeply. YES! Soon we will trade the hem for the real thing--OUR PRECIOUS GOD and SAVIOR-JESUS CHRIST!
May the glory of Easter overwhelm us!
Praise HIM!
Just a few months ago, my beautiful daughter-in-law lost her mother to cancer. Her battle started about five years ago.
I went to Houston with my beautiful daughter-in-law about three years ago, she was helping her Mother with one of her many Dr. procedures.
We all went to lunch one day, at P.F. Changs. My daughter-in-law looked over at this table full of ladies,(they were celebrated one of your birthdays) and said, "That's Beth Moore, I'm doing one of her bible studies right now." We encouraged her to go over and say Hi when you were leaving. She did, you gave her a huge hug which brought tears to her eyes. She came back to the table and said, "I told her I didn't cry this much when I met Garth Brooks! Do you think she know who he is?"
Thank you for your never-ending kindness. Your support to all is heaven-sent.
Beth,
Thank you. Made me think of Nicole C. Mullen's song... One Touch. Here's the link to her music video, it's pretty powerful.
http://nicolecmullen.com/video.html
I praise You God, for Your resurrection power!
"Then she said one of the most profound things I've ever heard.
"He knows it's scary to be us.""
These words just pierced through my crust of "must be strong."
How many times have I been scared to be me? How can I know so much about Jesus and have never had that trueful thought that Melissa uttered.
Thank you for sharing this now.
I'm also in tears over your reminder of the "no mores". This past Monday our little study group finished your revised version of A Woman's Heart. I wept through much of the video, especially the "no mores". Here's another one for you - NO MORE Alzheimers Disease.
Bless you Beth & your family this Resurrection Sunday. xo
It's been a ggod morning watching little ones at a Easter egg hunt and then hearing my little guy say, "this was fun but I like the Jesus part." I want someone to say of me that I preferred the Jesus part...like your friend Belinda. Blessings today.
With an ache in my heart that is accompanied only by the peace of God, I can say, "God is good." Funny how this resonates to your very core when life seems so hard to get a handle on. Sobering reminder of life and it's realities.
I am sitting here in huge tears! I mean the ugly cry ones.
I knew a woman just like Belinda, my mom! Her name was Judy. She wasn't suppose to make it to 48. Her stubborn faith in God kept her going. Breast cancer that was soo severe. 12 years later it came back like crazy. All over! She made it to her 60th B-day!
She was my mother, best friend (both only children)...but most of all my mentor! I miss her so much every day. Your message really helps me.
She loved Easter ...God in Action!
I am hanging on to hem/HIM just to make it. I am so grateful that he know what we go thru.
I must calm down so I can see...sniff sniff!
Beth..Amanda..Melissa ....You all are a Blessing to me!

I read this post yesterday and gave some thought to Melissa's statement, "He knows it's scary to be us."
I read this post again today and had a totally different reaction to it. Today is Saturday....Jesus was fighting the good fight for us many years ago. He was shaking/breaking the very shackles of Hell for us. He was redeeming us. He was resurrecting us. He was offering us the only forgiveness we can truly have. He was offering us the only way to the Father. I agree with Melissa, He does know it's scary to be us.....He lived among us...He was one of us. When we read the Bible, we read the many stories of His existence among us, so we can rest assured that He does know....it is very scary to be us!!
Thanks for the post.
What a beautiful gift your words are! Thank you.
Thank you Beth. We are in that place. Our 2 yr old little girl was just diagnosed with kidney cancer last week. We are 2 weeks into a blur of major surgery, organ removal, port implantation, cancer confirmation, and last Thursday she had her first chemo treatment. This week we found out it was a little more complicated than we originally thought and it has been a dark few days. Thank you for your words...His words, when I needed them most.
In Him,
Amber
Beth this is a great posting for me right as my pop is passing. He is in hospices and we look for him to go. This is what I needed to read thank you again for it.
Oh how I needed this....thank you for these words. Two things are now in my heart and head...."One day we will trade our hem for the REAL HIM, and "He KNOWS it scary to be us".
My heart has been comforted by HIS TRUTH yet again!
Much love and Happy Easter!
HE IS RISEN!
Dearest Beth,
I love your books. I love your Bible Studies. I love Life Today Wednesdays. I love LPM. And I love your conferences. But what I am most GRATEFUL for today is your committment to this blog. Particularly this post.
Nearly 4 years ago the Cleveland Clinic told me I had ALS. Lou Gherrigs if you will. They told me the diagnosis was 3-5 years. I was almost 30 at the time and had three children ages 1,3 and 5.
I was a Christian yes, but I didn't know the Life available in my relationship with Christ. I didn't know the intimacy. Salvation yes! Sanctification- NO!
I learned how to read my Bible throughout the initial weeks. Oh how I needed Him. I clung to Romans Chapter 8 and Hebrews 11. I sought God. And I found Him. And in those months I learned to repeat (and believe) "I CHOOSE YOU. I TRUST YOU. YOU'RE ENOUGH FOR ME" If nothing changed regarding my scenario... God was who He was and He was all I needed.
Within months I had been seen by a Lyme Specialist who confirmed that I had Neurological Lyme Disease that destroys your body in the same manner as ALS... BUT that there is treatment. High doses of antibiotics. Oral, Intramuscular, IV.
I've managed the Neuro Lyme for over three years. To the point that this past November I went off all meds and TRULY believed the Lord had healed me of this disease and that I was no longer a slave to it but to Him alone.
This past month I've realized that the Lyme Disease is still in my body. From the Meningitis a month ago until today I've dealt with muscle weakness, cramps, twitching, wasting... fatigue, irritability and the need to make a decision to take antibiotics once again.
Reading your blog today has helped to settle my heart. He knows how scary it is to be us. To be me. He knows what it is for me to choose to think true, right, noble, pure, excellent, admirable, praiseworthy OVER thoughts of 'what if this time the Lyme kills me as ALS would'. He knows His plans and purpose for me and that if there is a no today it's for a greater yes tomorrow (or beyond).
And one day, ONE DAY, Beth... I will indeed trade my hem for ALL OF HIM!!! And praise Him I shall. And do!
In the meantime- I want you to know... I value His gift in you. And I'm grateful that you choose in obedience to serve Him with it despite the steady criticism and harse judgements. My life, as well as the hundreds of thousands of other women out there are touched daily by Christ in You!!
All my love to you! And Happy Easter!
Bliss indeed. Come soon sweet Jesus!
Thank you so much for sharing with me.
In a bundle,
D
Last night I was able to witness my 90 and 89-year-old grandparents, who have been married for 70 years, cry with eachother over "leaving this place (meaning death)." And while I can't wait for that beautiful day when they trade the hem for Him, I can't bear the thought of one being here alone. I know that God has given them some extra years. She beat breast cancer, he has very advanced dementia and she is the only one he can remember. I so needed this post this morning. I felt last night that I had no more tears but I sure found some this morning!
Beautiful post! Thank you for the encouragement. It is scary being us!
Almost 1 year ago the Lord began taking me on a new journey: teaching my first adult class. I had taught children for many years and this was a whopper of a change! He has been so gracious and has given me the courage and strength to adjust. Sometimes it feels like walking a tightrope. :)
I'm looking for the day I trade the hem for Him, too!
P.S. I prayed for you Thursday.
Love,
Sherry
Just read your blog and was much encouraged. I'm still on my "ovarian cancer journey" after surgery in August 06, 6 mos of chemo and now a 1 1/2 yr of a clinical trial. I have touched the hem of His garment and know someday I'll see the real HIM!!! I know the Lord is with me during this journey. So many open doors!!! I can't say I'd trade this season of my life for anything. I've grown more and more in him and in fellowship with so many others, family members and other cancer patients. What a trip!! So, until He says "come home" and or comes back to take us all home I continue on this trek!! And, NOT alone, He is with me.as well as so many of my praying angels. My daughter and I will be in Portland next week at your seminar.(She's been one of my biggest cheerleaders!) We thoroughly enjoyed being a part of your Vancouver, BC one. It was a great get away for us both and encouragement to hear you in person. I fully appreciated your humblity. I came back ready to face my cancer head on and she to face some of her challenges. One being a precious son with muscular dystrophy!! He too has reached out to touch the hem of His garment!! Thanks again, for being so real. See ya in Portland!!!
Mary H.
Lots of tears! Humble silence here.
I remember Belinda's story from Believing God. No more pain, no more troubles- all in the hope of heaven! The day will be glorious to be in His presence!
First of all I'm cranked that you are still in bed at 7:30...if I ever get to... I feel guilty...way to go...second of all, as a 15 year stage 3 cancer survivor, I can attest to the ongoing, ever present scariness (is that a word?)of dealing with it...thanks for the cleansing tears, the reminder of His empathy, the assurance of His faithfulness and goodness, and some reality of our mortality. May we all make every day, count. (As soon as we get out of bed...)
With tears in my eyes and prayers in my heart for a sweet cousin who is reaching so valiantly for the hem of His garment to be able to stay and care for her family, I thank you for this. I will never forget your words. He does know how much is hurts to be us, how scary it is. He is risen and we will, too. Thank you, Beth.
Hugs,
Shellie
Thank you for everything Beth.
I don't comment here very much, but I must today. I just came back from visiting my dear mom who has metastasized breast cancer. She had breast cancer ten years ago, and God let her live this decade to see my daughters--her grandchildren--born and her son get married. But now the cancer is back and has spread everywhere--soon it will be time for her to go Home. She doesn't have the strength to go to church with us tomorrow on Easter, and I know that is hurting her. So I dressed my little girls up in their Easter dresses and brought them to see her today. My heart is heavy. I think of Jesus, standing at the tomb of Lazarus, bursting into tears at the outrage of it all. And I think of Him offering up Himself as the antidote to death. He is the Resurrection. He is the Life. Because He died and rose again, my mom is going to be with Him in Paradise shortly. And someday we'll all be reunited again. I can't wait for that day. He is risen! He is risen indeed!
Amen.
After I've traded the hem for the HIM I'm gonna find Belinda and thank her for touching your life...as she has in turn, touched mine thru you! Good stuff, Siesta Momma!
HE IS RISEN!
HE IS RISEN, INDEED!!!!
Much love,
Valarie

Yesterday, Good Friday - I sat with my 93 year old Grandmother as she drew her last breath and went to see her Savior face to face. A blessed moment -- and as I sat there crying both tears of grief and gratitude. I pondered the thousands and thousands of prayers that lady prayed for me, and the rest of her family. Boy did she love Jesus...more than anything. And when I called my brother to tell him that Grandma had passed away, I told him, "Grandma, is spending Easter in heaven this year." To which my brother responded, "Shawna, EVERY day is Easter in heaven." Amen and Amen. See you soon Grandma
Beth, you were on my heart yesterday. I pray for your energy and enthusiasm to "Hold Fast"- I've observed your ministry the past 20+ years and thank you for being an example and using those magnificent God given gifts on our behalf- You demonstrate what God's healing "looks like" and what happens when a person is set free and God transforms our pain into our passion- Lots of love and resurrection power from our savior and Lord- Your carry him to us in a most precious and impressive way- Your sister in Christ
Beth
Thanks for the wonderful post. I too am a breast cancer survivor who has been given more time. I pray that I will use my time wisely. My friend who went through cancer treatment a year after I did says she would not change her life even if she could and I know exactly what she means. When you are forced to look death in the eyes what you see is eternal life through faith in Jesus Christ. In a strange way I am jealous for your friend, she is in heaven! AWESOME

I am one who struggles deeply with believing..... not doctrine but relationship and God's interaction. Reading of such a fierce faith and such a real hope that is ours has moved me to tears and given me much to think about. What a gift to take with me as I go to celebrate my Redeemer tomorrow morning!! wow
I really need to hear this today. I am having a week of bad news after bad news after bad news. Seems everyone I know is suffering. Thank you for these words of hope.
Oh, Beth--I was so moved by the tribute to your friend. She sounds like a great lady of faith and I look forward to meeting her in Heaven. How I long for the day that there is no more separation, sickness, death, cancer--where the Lamb of God is worshipped in the fullness of His glory, power, honor and might. Thank you for everything that you do for us. Remember that there had to be a Good Friday before there was a Resurrection Sunday. It is my hope and prayer that your and your precious family will have a Blessed Resurrection Day.

I'm overcome.
And that's just all I can say.
Wow, Beth. Wow. You will probably not read this comment because I'm something like 326, but that is one of the best posts I've ever read here.
You're right. It's scary to be here. But He knows it. He knows it. And he has come over "here" and overcome here. Bless His holy name.

My Mom lost her battle with breast cancer 4 years ago in June. Now that I'm a Mom, I've thought about how hard it must have been for her to have gone through that while having 4 kids to take care of. One thing I had never thought about what how "he knows it's scary to be us." Wow. What a wonderful Savior we serve! Not only does he know it's scary, but he knows how hard it can be to be us, too. I'm so glad that this life is not the end!
Hey Beth,
The thing that touched me most is what Melissa said. He knows it's hard to be us. I tend to forget that and instead think of Him as the God who is holy and expects much from us...and forget the grace and mercy that He offers. I am so glad that He knows, from personal experience, that it is hard to be us. And that He offers us grace.
Love you and Amanda and Melissa,
Kimberly
Just sat with a dear sister last week who was diagnosed with cancer. We two looked around the waiting and room and thought of the many who don't have hope. Silent prayers were lifted on their behalfs. My dear friend from Iraq found out the cancer is small and localized. Praise God for the extension of time for my dear friend and sister. kathy
Fanny Crosby, a Hymn writer, and blind as well, wrote, "I shall know Him by the prints of the nails in his hands." And I recalled that beautiful song as I read your blog tonight. What an amazing moment when we are actually in the presence of our Holy God. What a day that will be! And until that day comes, we have the hope of our blessed redeemer, the comforter, who has taken away the sins of the world for those who choose to believe. Thank you for your awesome post and the ministry that you bring to all of us. God bless you!
On this Easter Sunday, I take comfort in the assurance of God's Word. In this life as humans,we have insurance to "protect" us during a loss (life, health, home, car, etc..)
As humans we always fall short and we require a lot of work not only taking care of ourselves, but taking care of those around us.
Thank you for Your assurance in Your Living Word! Thank You God that You want Your children to Love You with All our Hearts and Minds and to follow Your Commandments.
Thank You for sending Your Son, Jesus Christ to be the World's Sin. Thank You God for such "simple" solutions from the beginning of time in a world now in 2009 that has become so "complex!
This is one of the most meaningful and profound things I have ever read. Your word pictures stay with me forever. I'll never forget your description of joy as "the smile we give back to God", as a baby recognizes and smiles at those he loves. I am sure that these examples will find their way into lessons as I teach. Thank you, thank you.
Father God,
In 2009, technology created by the human mind has allowed us to predict weather, predict the anticipation of human life & prepare for death. The human mind has created technology that has help create life and end life.
Father God, thank you in the assurance in Your Word on this Easter Sunday, that noone can predict the return of Your son Jesus Christ in a world where the human mind is constantly working on new ways to predict and foretell the future.
Amen
absolute BLISS!
love this day best!
it is pouring buckets-wind gusts- down right nasty weather- at the beach this Easter morn.

Tears in my eyes. Tears in my heart. It IS scary to be us. It's scary to be me. But I grab onto whatever bits of faith I can find and I breathe. Some day I find gobs of faith to hold onto - other days I seem to only access mere inches. But I look for that hem. Each day.
Bliss, Bliss to be sure.
My mom just told me yesterday that her bestfriend since highschool had a clear MRI after being diagnosed with stage four brain cancer in October! Her friend and her friends husband have not attended church since they got married decades ago, but they are going to go now!! They know it was the prayers that healed her! Praise you Jesus!
He is risen! I love this post - and Melissa's words too! I'll never forget them.
About the same time you were at Belinda's service, my husband (also a "Keith") attended the service of a "new" beloved friend who just passed away from a motorcycle accident. Whether an old friend or a new friend, when you have the Christ connection and the assurance of seeing them again, you can't help but smile on the inside.
God be with these families as they miss their loved ones.

What profound and insightful words. They really hit home after this morning for me. I was helping in preschool at church and had never met my co-helper before. Turns out this sweet young thing hasn't eaten a bit of food in 5 years because she receives all nutrition from a tube. Born with serious defects in her internal organs, she had surgery every 6 months, then every year since birth to "re-fit" the "fix" to her insides as she grew. At age 18 she was to have one last fit with special devices, only a major nerve was cut during surgery, paralyzing every internal organ. Back from death yet again, she's now undergoing chemo for cancer. For the few minutes I was serving (re-inforcements showed up and I was able to come home early), I was able to behold a walking miracle of Christ's constant healing. Why her short time thus far has been a battle for life...I'm not entirely sure, but her existence points to God's sustaining power moment by moment, and she is living proof of what we teach our little ones every Sunday -- that God is in charge of everything.
Dear Beth,
My birthday landed on Good Friday this year. My greatest gift was a song the Lord allowed me to stumble on that expressed the longing in my heart that I could not find words for. It meets the scary place Melissa spoke of, life as we know it, with kingdom eyes. If you have time to find it on Itunes and listen, you will be blessed. We lost a sister from bible study to cancer this week too. May God hold you tight in His grip. Much love to you, precious sister in Christ.

From reading various friends' blogs, I can tell this woman had an amazing ministry on earth.
May the God of all comfort pour out His peace on her family and friends as they grieve their loss. I pray they hold tight to their resurrection promises. In Jesus' Name I pray.
Thank you. Tears are running down my face.
He knows ... HE knows ... He KNOWS ...
Thank you!!

She made it "home" in time for Easter in heaven.
Bliss, indeed.
Beth,
Having just lost a friend from brain cancer last week, this blog really hits home! Dave fought the good fight for over a year and a half. Heaven seems to have received two very special people this week.
As I left my precious Grandmother alone in her nursing room home yesterday, I had one of those " kodak" moments...you know, the kind where you look back over your shoulder and think "Don't forget this."
I have pondered these same thoughts ever since. I know her time is almost over. She has hardly any memory left, except the ones rattling around randomly in her mind. And God KNOWS.
Then, to find you speaking this on the blog today....I so needed to hear it. So needed to be reminded that we are ALL in this thing together, there is no one who is immune to the fear of a diagnosis, no one who is immune to the loss of loved ones. Yes, my heart has been heavy all weekend. But praise GOD, SUNDAY CAME.
He is risen. What inexpressible hope that gives.....
Thank you for your tender heart.
Such an awesome reminder of the seasons of life, and when we pray for healing, sometimes it doesn't happen on this side of glory. Try as I may to understand the seasons of life so carefully layed out in scripture, it's a struggle 'not for us to know times or seasons which the Father has put in his own authority'.
I'm really not a blogger, so not sure why I wondered in here today, but perhaps drawn into a place to reflect on my mother's unexpected passing two Easter's ago.
Two Easter's ago I lost my mother to cancer. A cancer no one knew was growing in her precious little body. A cancer had literally spread unknowingly throughout her entire body. 10 short days after being diagnosed, on Easter morning, the season of her life ended.
It was such a whirlwind few days yet I remember every detail. Especially when her pastor showed up at her bedside Saturday evening. He had gone to bed early that evening in preparation for an exciting Easter Sunday the next morning. But he woke up and felt compelled to return to the hospital to read his Easter sermon to my mother. As we gathered around the hospital bed, we listened to his powerful words of the resurrection that gives us hope for our next season in life.
It was a privilege to watch a shepherd tending to one of his little lambs. He left us, and a few short hours later, on Easter morning, she was present with the Lord. We saw Isaiah 40:11 transpire before our very eyes as the Almighty ‘gathered his little lamb and carried her home in His arms.’
Our family was stunned. Just weeks before she could work circles around any one of us. My husband (a pastor) and I were in the middle of one of the most exciting and changing times of our lives (so we thought). Within the next 4 weeks, our oldest son would be graduating from college, would be commissioned an officer in the army and head off to flight school. But first my husband would perform the marriage between him and his precious fiance who was graduating from nursing school. And in the middle of it, our youngest son was graduating from high school and signing to play soccer at a D1 school.
Our world stood still that Easter two years ago. This unexpected season had taken us to our knees in a matter of days. Just days earlier, my mom was in the thick of helping me prepare food for the open houses, showers and dinners we would host in the next several weeks. The remnants of a partially made wedding quilt lie folded in her sewing room along with incomplete scrapbooks with photos of the bride and groom to be.
And of course my dad was simply lost. Married 51 years, high school sweethearts, she was the love of his life. My two sisters and I had entered the season of our relationship with our mom that all girls work to attain – that of friendship (and yes, we always wore hats on Easter as little girls, and matching dresses my mother made us!)
We were four women who relied on each other, had a history together that allowed us to tolerate our idiosyncrasies, shared the love of gardening, cooking, knitting, quilting…all the things our mom had taught us to love and do.
Our finite minds could not grasp what this new season of life without our mom was supposed to look like. There wasn’t such a season in our minds.
Two years later, the sting of her death is still so fresh. Perhaps just a taste of what the disciples felt the day our Lord was crucified. We just finished 4 services at our church today...exhausting but refreshing to my soul. As my fingers played the songs over and over for each service, the words of hope, healing...worthy is the lamb...the grave is overcome...we will all rise when He calls our name...no more sorrow, no more pain, and we will rise on eagles wings, and before our God we'll fall on our knees...praise HIM!
And so each season these last two years have brought forth a new understanding. The peace of now, knowing he will sustain me every day... the joy of next, knowing that joy will come in the morning no matter what... and the grace of different, living with the knowledge that some day we will all be changed.
I know my mom must have had a front row seat this Easter in glory, singing His praises. Some day I'll join her...sometimes I just can't wait.
This makes my tears stream! I love my wonderful husband and my two beautiful children who look just like him! I love my family, my friends and my church, but I look so forward to the bliss of being with Jesus! Bliss indeed! Thank you for letting God use you over and over! You have made such an impact on my life! I love you and yours~
Dear Miss Beth, with the thousands of comments you read every month (week?) I'm sure you've heard "thank you" as many times, but from the depths of my heart, I thank you for sharing some of the most powerful thoughts I've heard or read on this or any other Resurrection Sunday. Wow...

Amanda, I am looking for pictures of your precious family on Annabeth's first Easter! I hope you all took some pictures....I bet your family was the cutest thing this morning!
What a special and timely post. . . I found out just before reading this that a dear sister in Christ was diagnosed with very invasive cancer. . . meanwhile, I am waiting on test results of my own. Please pray! I have thought often this week that I am scared, and Melissa's words really gripped me. He knows I'm scared. He knows! Thank you, Jesus, for loving us and staying with us through it all. Thank you that this isn't all there is. Help us to be faithful. . . and even joyful. Oh, we need you so.
Thank you for those wonderful words. Sometimes we just need to hear that He knows what it is like to be us and face all of lifes struggles. I cannot wait to get more than a hem. Beth, you make so much come into perspective for me so many times. Praise the Lord.
Happy Easter. He is Risen. He is Risen indeed!!
On days like today when I feel like I have no one to understand my fears and concerns, I go to your blog and I am refreshed. Thank you my sister in Christ
Oh...what a word. I'm 55 and in good health, but lately, I've been thinking more and more about stepping out of this "earth suit" and into eternity. He has placed that in our hearts and nothing here will ever satisfy.
Thank you for this post. Beautifully written. I especially appreciate the sentiment, as I lost a dear friend to cancer a year and a half ago to cancer. She was such an example of faith. My thoughts always turn to Julie during this time of resurrection and new life. Although I still have lots of questions regarding why she wasn't healed here on earth (she had three kids -- ages 7, 4, and 1), I am thankful that she got to go home to her savior.
Dear Beth,
It is Resurrection Sunday and I am still remembering Belinda's memorial service, you blessed her family in ways you may never know with your words. I am Belinda's sister-in-law and also a breast cancer survivor.
You know how we wait, in the first wave of grief and pain , after that middle of the night phone call is received? We are waiting to hear the voice of our Beloved speak that Word to our hearts, the Word that lets us know He is aware of all we are experiencing. He spoke to me this morning in David's Psalm 20 verse 3 -6. (Amplified) "For You send blessings of good things to meet her (Belinda); You set a crown of pure gold on her head. 4) She asked life of You, and You gave it to her - long life forever and evermore. 5) Her glory is great because of Your aid; splendor and majesty You bestow upon her. 6) For You make her to be blessed and a blessing forever; You make her exceedingly glad with the joy of Your presence."
I hope you get to see this, I wanted to share this Word with you and thank you for sharing Belinda’s story. You are a blessing!
I also thank everyone for all the prayers going up for her family, what a wonder to belong to the Family of God!!
Sincerely,
Georgia Lamothe
This touched me so much because both my parents mercifully have been healed of cancer; and when my mother was first diagnosed, God gave her a vision of that woman who reached out to touch His hem, and told my mother that she would be healed. And praise God, she is!
We had, about 2-1/2 years before her diagnosis, lost my very precious younger brother suddenly at the age of 27. We had, the day my mother was diagnosed, lost my grandmother to cancer. I don't understand the way things happen, but I very much needed that reminder to have wild faith anyway and to know that He knows it's scary to be us. Thank you and blessings on you and your staff and sweet family, Beth!!!
God be praised. He overcame!
And one day, all mourning will turn into dancing.
Blessed Resurrection ~ Blessed HOPE!
THANK YOU
What an amazing blog. I cannot wait to meet Belinda!! Life IS scary and would be more so if it weren't for our great Jesus!! He has given us so much HOPE I can hardly stand it. The wondrous thing to me is, he has given us so much more than the hem.....oh to go before that throne, lay it at His feet and KNOW how much HE LOVE US!!! NO GREATER SACRIFICE for such a sorry lot!!!!!
Thank you Beth for your lovely words and feelings.
Bible Bunny in NO MI
Amen...Thank you Jesus!
He knows it's scary to be us.
I thought of that as I worry about yet another day of possible tornados here in middle TN.
I thought of that just now as I read about the death of child who I had been following and praying for in the blogosphere.
And, that statement, brings me such comfort. I had never thought of it before...He knows that it is scary down here. He knows. He knows.
Beth, Loved the perspective from you and Melissa. Guess we'll all just have to hang on to His hem 'cause it's gonna be a bumpy ride!!! Regarding the dogs and your yard, my yardman always reminds me that, "Welllll, Mrs. Goodwin, you can't have your big dogs and a beautiful yard too!" I choose the dogs (2 boxers)
every time! Loves!
I'm without words (a rare occurrence).
Princess Beth, thank you for this! Praying for you and yours, and this reminded me of something that I hold dear in times of cancer and loss, something you taught me a long time ago..
God is always faithful and true, HE promised to deliver us and HE will.
It just may be delivering us over or around the thing, or to the other side of it, or just right in to HIS arms, sooo no matter how it works out, we have been delivered! Amen! what a wonderful God we serve, who has thought of everything! happy RIsen holiday to y'all.. love you!
Beth,
I really am SO glad that you wrote this, especially since a dear siesta left a comment on my blog about her cancer.
I guess in a way, even though my mom has lived with Chron's disease since she was 23yrs old, that I don't fear someone becoming ill, I've lived with it at my side my entire life. My mom has beat odds SO many times, and I KNOW that my faith in HIM, has helped her; sometimes its hard for people to pray, and it takes US to be the torch for them, to help them be guided into HIS arms.
We are all dealing with illness in some way shape or form, just because it doesn't have a name it doesn't mean that we aren't suffereing. Like you said, we are crying out to one day be with HIM in glory.
And as I keep my bible close to my arms while I sleep, I sometimes can just feel like this life I am living is a dream. Regardless of what happens. I never write so much, sorry I did, but today I just have thoughts.
and I am sorry, but I have my #8 scripture verse too, Ps. 16:8-11; because I couldn't wait to memorize words that Jesus spoke again in the new testament.
The Word has overflown within me, and it brings tears to my eyes, at HOW much I KNOW, and LOVE the verses. And HOW MUCH HE can help me retain. HE IS AMAZING!!!
For my siesta, who left that comment, I stand in agreement to BELIEVE GOD right along with you:)
Love you all!

Beth, You have no idea how I needed to hear this. "He knows how scary it is to be us."...what comforting words during such a very difficult time of loss and weariness for myself and so many others. I look to Him.
My Blessed Beth,
I love you even though I have not personally met you!!! God has blessed you with such a tremendous gift of reaching to the very marrow of the subject!!
I love this post!! What a very precious person, Belinda much have been!!! I was sent this by a mom whose son is fighting cancer for the 3RD time!!! You touched her so much!!!
How blessed it is to know that we are here but only for a moment, but in eternity with Him!!!
Praise you for your faithfulness to Him!!!

Yes, it is almost too much. Married to a functional alcoholic. Wondering, praying, fasting - will my children fall into that? Have a scared 22-year old daughter who has just found a lump on her breast and I'm trying to get her into a doctor quickly...trusting in Jesus and thanking God that this life is temporary.
SO.....what dogs???......I guess I missed the arrival of new dogs after the departure of the previous two.....I will comment about the substance of the blog in a separate entry.....
Bless you dear Beth!!!
Beth-
What a beautiful tribute to Belinda. May we all long for the day that we touch Him.
I have to share how much you have impacted my life. PROFOUNDLY. I have grown through trials, deepened my spiritual roots through bible study, caught a Holy passion for Jesus I never knew despite being raised in the church.
I thank you for sharing your life, trials, mistakes as a teacher & woman. I have been facilitating bible study every one of yours and other great teachers for 12 years. I have been the topic of criticism & scorn from other leaders by bringing together women of various ages, stages & church bodies welcoming them all. Why does some in the "church" hold in bondage those who Christ has set free? PRAISE GOD for His word. Gal 5:1
A Huge Thank you for the encouragment to press on and fan into flame the gifts God has entrusted to me. Acts 20:22-32 was a Rhema word and blessing from God to offer revealation over something I experienced that had the potential to devistate. Knowing when to exit "priceless". You are one of my mentors in ministry whom I have never had the priviledge of meeting yet has impacted me tremendously.
Beth - I continually thank God for you and pray for you. Keep on in the Lord. Your labor is not in vain. It blesses so many Siestas.
So very glad you shared this.
Oh how inspiring!
Yes, He knows. Glad I believe it! Makes this life a little easier to live and to press on in Him. Praise Him!! Thank you for your mercy God.
Beth ...
I am a six year survivor. This is what I learned. It is a scary thing to live with ... it is life changing ... but it can be such a blessing.
In every lifetime there are defining moments, moments that shape and mold our very existence. Some of them are moments we embrace with grateful hearts, cherishing them while they last, wishing they would last even longer. Giving birth to my daughters, Caitlyn and Jillian, were just this type of moment. I can still remember vividly the exact moment that each of them was placed in my arms for the first time and the indescribable emotions that flooded through me. I had never known a love so deep could come from within my heart. Looking down at their beautiful faces, counting their little fingers and toes, covering them with mommy kisses, all of it was magical, and was nothing short of a miracle. On the other end of the spectrum, are those defining moments born from times difficult to endure, times that rock our lives right down to their very foundations. Often unexpected, and always unwelcome these moments seem to last an eternity. Such was the moment I found out I had breast cancer. It was if someone had slammed me onto my back, knocking the very breath out of me. I was instantly cast into a world of darkness and fear. I had never known I could feel so lost and alone.
Although both the above moments drastically and permanently changed the course of my life, surprisingly it was not in my happiness that I drew close to the Father, but rather in my utter despair. Causing what could have been one of the deepest valleys in my life to be, in fact, one the tallest mountaintops. Not that the journey up the slope of that mountain was always pleasurable or easy, at times it was quite the contrary, but the things that I learned along the way made every step worth the cost.
I learned that true strength lies not in independence, but in dependence. For it was only in my time of brokenness, when I was unable to carry the weight of my circumstances, that I was able to fully experience the Lord's amazing strength. It was when I was unable to walk on my own, that He gathered me up in His arms, hugged me to His chest and carried me. In His arms, I found the strength to face my deepest fears and move past them. I had never known that I could be so physically close to God, nor that he wished to be so close to me.
Having been a Christian for most of my life, I had tried to live a life that would be pleasing to Him. I approached my life like it was a dance, one I was doing for Him, hoping that He would approve. I had the best of intentions, but that that was not what He wanted from me. You see, my Father wanted to dance with me, to lead me and to guide me. And so, much like a child, in my sorrow I placed my feet up on His feet, wrapped my arms around Him, and He began to move me according to His desire. I was in awe that the creator of the universe would want such an intimacy with me, and, having loved Him for a long time, I fell in Love with Him. In return, I felt the love of a parent holding their child for the first time rain down upon me, and I cried. I cried because I never knew that He loved me so deeply and personally.
This realization lead to another truth, God is only as far away as you keep Him. I know now, that the Lord is always there, waiting for each of us to seek His presence. He desires an active relationship with each of us, but it is our choice. He desires to be our master in all that we do, but it is our choice. He hears our cries of agony as we suffer and wants to help, but it is our choice. He hears our cries of jubilation as we celebrate and yearns to celebrate personally with each and every one of us, but it is our choice. He wants us to follow Him, but it is our choice. He wants us to be close to Him, but it is our choice. It is our choice to either keep Him at an arms distance, or to open up our hearts to Him, submit ourselves to His will and fulfill His greatest desires. The rewards for doing so are plentiful, but again it is our choice.
I also learned that God is constantly speaking to us, only we don't always take the time to hear Him. There have been plenty of times in my life that I cried out to Him in need, heard nothing and wondered why He didn't respond. Feeling abandoned, I often blamed Him for the very circumstances He would have gladly saved me from, had I only stopped talking long enough to listen. The news of my diagnosis was so disturbing that it left me speechless, and it was then, when I was out of words myself, that I heard Him calling me. Like a Father calming a child, His words filled my heart drawing my focus to Him, rather than my problem. With my eyes fixed on Him, I followed His voice, and my journey downhill began to instantly change. It was then, and only then, that my journey to the mountaintop began. Looking back over my life, I now know that it was never that He didn't respond to my prayers, but rather that at times I didn't want to hear what He had to say. I have learned that being willing to hear things that might make you uncomfortable or require you to change is often difficult to do, but He has our best interests at heart. It is so very important to make time to listen.
I learned that God can transform even the most horrible of experiences into something miraculous, when they are placed at the feet of Jesus. As difficult as it can be to give up control and lay it down, if we let Him, God will often use our individual trials to speak to those that might not otherwise hear Him. Through me, the Lord has taught others about the importance of faith, the power of prayer and the gifts he bestows on His children. Watching Him work through me, knowing that He was touching other people's lives through my walk of faith, was in itself another defining moment in my life. Through submission and faith, the Lord has used me to spread His word and love to other people. My mother returned to the church after many years of separation, my daughter, Caitlyn, accepted Christ as her
personal Savior and countless people have professed their lives to be changed because of my example. Although I would not have picked cancer for myself, the work of God I have witnessed through it has given the journey a value that far outweighs the costs. Each and every one of us can be an instrument of God. Shining His light, spreading His love. All we need to do it lay our troubles at His feet.
Etched in my heart, also, is the reality that prayers are integral in the life of any Christian. While numerous earthly things constantly work to separate us from the Lord, I am convinced that prayers are the very stepping-stones that bring us back to Him. They are the medium through which He works within our lives. The challenge, however, lies not within praying itself, but in being able to accept God's answer to them. This experience has taught me something about that as well, sometimes God says no to something that we want now because he is saying yes to something more valuable, something that is somehow connected to the very thing we are trying to escape. The bigger picture belongs to Him alone, it is often only in hindsight that we are able to examine a chain of what once seemed random events, put the pieces together, and begin to understand.
The body of Christ is an incredible thing. It was absolutely amazing the amount of support both tangible and intangible that we received from it. It was as if our circumstances set of a ripple that went out through the church, touching many, calling to duty the servant's heart that God has blessed His children with. I never knew it was possible to be loved by so many people, or that I would come to love so many of them! I learned that God doesn't want us to do it alone. He gave his Son disciples, he gave us the body of Christ.
God gave me many truths and lessons throughout this journey, but there is one that I hold dear to my heart, one I revisit often, one that has become my mantra, one that I truly believe to be the secret of living. It is not complex, and yet it came as a stunning revelation to me. Our lives are finite, and our date to return home has already been decided. I came to understand that having a life threatening disease does not change that time. In this light, it became merely something to do while I am here on Earth. I now know that each day is a gift, and the moment we are actually in is really all we are guaranteed. The days of yesterday are gone, given to the past never to return. The days of tomorrow belong only to the future, and living in pursuit of them often results in the most tragic thing of all, forfitting the moment you are in. One of the biggest challenges we face in this world is living in the here and now, but the rewards for doing so are numerous . for it is in doing this very thing that God can teach us truly to live.
I do not profess to be a mature Christian, but He is maturing me. I have grown, and my path has narrowed from where I was before this journey began. There are still so many things that I don't know. But there is one thing that I know for sure. God spent a lot of my life following me, but now it is my time to follow Him, and I do so willingly and without reservation.
Thank you for this post. My father-in-law’s cancer just returned in March, less than 4 months after he finished his last round of chemo (or so we thought). He was finally getting back to his old self – he even had hair again! – when we found out the cancer was back, or it never really left. I worry about my husband, and I worry about his family, but most of all I worry about what will happen if my sweet children lose their favorite person in the whole world, their Papa. Between that and all of the other crummy things going on in our life right now, life is hard, and at times I feel like I can’t stand up with all of the weight sitting on my shoulders.
It is comforting to think that God knows what it’s like to be us. He doesn’t just care about us; He doesn’t just have in mind what’s best for us; but He KNOWS what we are going through. And he won’t put us through more than we can handle. I sure think I am going through more than I can handle, but apparently I’m not because God wouldn’t do that. And no matter what I have to go through, one day it will be over.
Ok, now that I have had time to read the blog......yes, I had the trauma just this January of being diagnosed with cancer after suffering for three years with misdiagnosed symptoms, then the dreadful regime of tests, and the doc appointment of the results to be told they did not find the markers but that the tests showed I had heart problems. Our bodies are but vessels while on earth to spread the gospel and be glory to God!!! So, whatever faith-building, hope-securing, love-nurturing, God-healing, trauma I have to go through - I say....bring it on since I am believing God!!!!!!!!!
"I will rise when He calls my name, no more sorrow, no more pain. I will rise on eagles wings before my God, fall on my knees, and rise I WILL RISE...." (Chris Tomlin: I will rise)
Oh! I can't wait to meet Him!
Thank you Beth, for putting it all into perspective the way you do.
I love how God speaks so tenderly to my heart through you, Beth, and I so dearly love you!
Speaking of teaching as a spirtual gift, I have been doing a study and am trying to discover and better understand what my spiritual gifting might be...it's not teaching, thankfully, but I wondering if you have any resources that might help me better discover what they might be! Thank you for the fun posts as well as the thought provoking, life challenging, Jesus transforming ones!

Much to savor in this post.
All I can say is ... amen!
Beth, thanks for being one of my very best friends even though we've never met. Praise you, Jesus, for bringing us together through Bible study and this blog. One day I will know bliss instead of pain. . . . and I pray that between now and then your light in me will be stronger than the darkness that surrounds it. Praise you, Jesus!
Thanks, Beth... I needed to hear that today. Just finished the Stepping Up study -- I'll NEVER look at a song the same way again! Thanks for making the Bible so alive to me. Your sister in faith, Kathy
My heart has been heavy lately with all those surrounding me who are very ill. Thank you for sharing this!
Longing for that BLISS!
Just what I needed to hear in a moment when my hope was waning. It's been a tough month health-wise for me. Thanks for this!

I'm tucking these words inside my journal. As I grow older and witness my own, degenerating, sometime self-inflicted, illnesses and the - even terminal - ones of people I love, I need to be constantly reminded of the beautiful Truth of one day being able to trade these earthly hems for His eternal presence. Thank you for this, Beth. I lift Belinda's family in prayer.

WOW! How True! How Awesome! How inspiring! He knows this stuff is scary to us...and knowing that He knows is all I need to know...Thank You for sharing your heart with us!

Thank you. I needed that. I SO needed that today. Oh the medical tests and trauma I have experienced in my 33 years. It never seems to stop yet I am still here. I have experienced His instant healing, His healing after years of endurance but you are right something else comes along. Unfortunately with me it always seems to be a fight for my health but I love Him so and just want to serve Him. So if it kills me to do it then I will die well in the battle. He is so strong in my weakness and seriously I would not want to the one taking the spotlight anyway. He is so good. He ALWAYS provides the impossible. He is the HEALER. He is the SUSTAINER. He is our EVERYTHING. You are right He does know this is hard. Oh but the harder it is here the more bliss Heaven will be. I cannot wait. But until then we have work to do for Him and His kingdom. Oh that He would even call us into those things. He is amazing.
Praying for you all.
Much love,
Angela
"He knows it's scary to be us". Amen and amen He does. I was one of those mommies who held my 3 year old's hand while she went through her cancer treatments. And I cannot tell you the way my fears were quelled knowing that God knew how scared I could get during those times.
She's 8 now. She's a precocious, Jesus-loving, third grader. Our God is beyond what words can describe. But I tell you what...He would have been every bit of what He is, even if He chose to heal her at Home rather than on earth.
What a beautiful story. My makeup is shot, and I could care less, because I too can't wait to trade a hem for Him and I rejoice with you, your sweet friend and my sweet friends who went to live in glory because of cancer.
I love you my sister,
Marni
Oh Beth...
You and Melissa hit the nail on the head. I was broken hearted and fearful today....can my God be trusted? I even blogged about my tough questions to him. (http://sandeefamily.blogspot.com/2009/04/heartbroken.html) and you Melissa just voiced it.
He knows it is scary to be us.
And He overcame all..
Thank you, I read today, what I needed to hear.
WOW!
Thank you for posting this.
Hi Beth, love reading and just wanted to ask you to pray for another young lady that has cancer and has had a long road. She has a website that I think would be a blessing to all those who have been afficated by cancer in some way. www.loveyourguts.com
Thank you for sharing!!
All at LPM,
I am new to your blog...and discovered you "accidentally" (isn't God good?) while searching for audio of Beth's bible study sessions because I complete them on my own right now and feel like I'm missing out on a piece. Anyway, one thing led to another and here I am...clearly among friends. What I love most about Mrs. Moore...and it has been validated after looking through this blog...is that she is REAL. Bona Fide. Been there. Feet of clay, like the rest of us. It's so much easier to listen to "straight talk" from someone who has sat in the mud and wiped her tear stained face with muddy hands. Thank you for being willing to be used of God. Your words have brought encouragement to me at such a trying, difficult time...a pit that is half "thrown in" and half "are you kidding me? I really did this to myself on purpose!" I feel that Mrs. Moore would caution me against lifting her up, so let me assure all that I am praising the King of Kings for servants who are willing to say, "Yep...been there."
Looking so forward to making friends and hopefully sharing in the giving and receiving of encouragement.

Around noon on Good Friday a storm blew through Tennessee, not far from here a toronado touched down and took lives and homes. My mother & I were out in the storm at the time. Later I called her and reminded her that when it was so dark here and scary...it was dark that day that Christ took my sins.
Thank you for your sweet words.
wow, He knows. Sitting here in awe of this post.... hem to Him...so much to ponder. GLORY!!!
Beth,
I want it to be enough to grab the hem while I'm here, because that in itself is a blessed miracle. I want to live for the day I hold onto to Him, not just for another day on this planet. Thank you for sharing Belinda's testimony. It spoke right to my heart and to a question I had festering there.
Kathy
Spiritual Mom Beth, I don't really know how to articulate what I'm thinking...Melissa is right, I know firsthand that life is brutal; a fallen world, not our home. I also have been reminded now that He knows it is scary to be us-sometimes out of your mind scary. I was laying it all out before Him with tears this morning, sitting in my bed in my jammies with pillows propped up behind me...I've never been able to handle living on my own. I have to hold on to that hem very tightly. I want to see HIM. But in the meantime, to live is Christ, to die is gain:) Phil. 1:20 Bless your heart, Spiritual Mom Beth:)
