Prince of Peace

Two years ago at Christmas, Curt and I were furiously trying to finish remodeling our home so that we could move in before the return of our Lord. It was absolutely the most stressful time of our marriage to date. There was not much holiday cheer in the little townhouse that we were so eager to vacate. We chose not to bother with decorating since we had enough to deal with between the house and a baby on the way.

Last year was going to be the most wonderful Christmas of all time. It was going to be one that we talked about for years to come. We had an adorable ten-month-old to add to all the joy of the season. It was his first Christmas, so we would need to document every little thing that happened and make everything as special as possible. We had a very cute house to decorate to our hearts' content. And boy, did we. Looking back, I can see that I was putting, hmmmm, just a leetle bit of pressure on, well, everyone and everything for it to be nothing less than magical. It makes me tired just thinking about it. And, honestly, I made no room in my heart for the baby Jesus. No room at all. In fact, on Christmas Day I started a huge argument with my sister. Yep, it was me. I picked it. And it was a big one.

This year is going to be different. The name of the game is peace. Financial peace. Sisterly peace. Peace in our schedule. Peace inside my house. (With about half the decorations we have instead of it looking like I robbed Hobby Lobby.) Peace outside my house. (With about half the Christmas lights we had last year, when Curt channeled Clark Griswold). Peace in my expectations. Peace in my heart with God.

Peace is something I will fight for this year. I want to enjoy this Christmas without all the self-inflicted pressure, unreasonable expectations, and needless distractions. I need there to be room for the baby Jesus, who, incidentally, is our peace.

I think if Mary had given birth to Jesus in 2007, she might have gone on eBay and ordered some custom-painted letters that spelled out his name on the wall. She might have emailed a picture of his crib bedding to the artist so that she could make it all match. To spell P-R-I-N-C-E O-F P-E-A-C-E would have cost Mary an arm and a leg. She might have even hoped Joseph wouldn't notice the $150 to PayPal on their bank statement. But those 13 letters are worth all the money in the world. They're the most lavish, expensive, mind-blowing, life-changing present we could ever give or get.

Colossians 3:12-17
Therefore, as God's chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience. Bear with each other and forgive whatever grievances you may have against one another. Forgive as the Lord forgave you. And over all these virtues put on love, which binds them all together in perfect unity.

Let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, since as members of one body you were called to peace. And be thankful. Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly as you teach and admonish one another with all wisdom, and as you sing psalms, hymns and spiritual songs with gratitude in your hearts to God. And whatever you do, whether in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.

Amanda,
This is such a timely word. So much goes on at this time of year and peace isn't usually what we most see and or choose. We are all facing situations that could easily rob us of our peace. I like what you said about fighting for peace. May we all seek the Prince of Peace this Christmas season.

Love,
Patty

It is so easy to get distracted. We do Christmas the way the world thinks we should do Christmas. We should all take time to pause and remember why He truly came.

Amanda! You are wise beyond your years. It is so easy to fall into the trap of huge expectations...especially when you want it to be perfect for your kids. Stick with your plan to keep it simple and real. I bet this will be the Christmas you will remember for years!

AJ,let me say I echo you're thoughts :) I even blogged on it about a week or so ago.Check it out www.abeth420.blogspot.com
I even have a "peace" ornament on my tree this year (in case I need a reminder)I'll never forget when I got a true picture of the Prince of Peace from my pastor. It has drastically changed my life.
Also,i'll never forget your mom's story of peace too.In the video of her "living beyond yourself" study
we talk about peace as we go through the fruits of the Spirit.
I'll never forget how your mom said "peace" was her favorite fruit.she said that of all the fruits it was the one she needed the most.In her typical excitable passionate expression she says "I just got to have peace !" You can see it in her eyes just how much she means it too. So,as the old expression says"like mother, like daughter".
I hope you and your family have a blessed and peaceful christmas this year :)

I love you Amanda.... Thank you for sharing in such a real way... I've been trying to focus on the same things... Peace... Simplicity...and...retrieving my Joy that I let wane away. Prince of Peace should rule all we do all the time. (I have to keep repeating that to myself)... and your Momma taught me (for the third time) through a Woman's Heart last night all about God's consistency. Peace... consistent Prince of Peace.

I imagine your home is even more magical than ever....

Amen, my dear siesta!! me too! It seems that we have a few week spots where the enemy can create turmoil, doesn't it?
Father in heaven, I pray for everyone reading this, I pray that we will make every effort to celebrate the true meaning of Christmas! I pray that we all prepare our hearts daily to receive freely from You and in return freely give. Giving our hearts to You to change and make pure, giving to others in the spirit of the One who gave His life for us. In Jesus' name, Amen.

Amanda--
This is just what I needed to be reminded about today. I have been exactly where you have been a few times in my life. I have planned every detail of Christmas to be the perfect one--and instead everything goes wrong. I have learned and have to keep learning that the perfect Christmas is...Having Jesus Christ in the center of everything!! It doesn't matter about the food the gifts if Christ is not honored and glorified with my heart and the motives of my heart. It is all about Him!! Thank you and I so appreciate your reminder to me about the perfect Christmas. May you and your family have the very best Christmas ever!

Love & Prayers

Oh, Amanda, you and I have been having the same thoughts! It's amazing how God knows what we need and how He gets the message to us! The last 3 Christmases have been awful for me! We have had one family tragedy after another either before or after Christmas all 3 years. This year, I am praying for PEACE and perhaps a little JOY! The only way it will happen is through the Prince of Peace!

Merry Christmas to you!

Dearest Amanda,
Your blog and heart are just precious, we are all capable of ruining the very thing we put so much ecpectation in. Remember this, time has a way of making even the arguments of Christmas a funny memory if we let forgiveness in as I know you have. My daughters love to talk about and laugh about the vacation from hell when they nearly killed each other. They tenderly love oneanother but it was a doozy of a time! God's best to you and may peace fill your house and heart this season. Shalom

Isn't it the truth? The more we plan and plan for a lavish, better-than-last-year's celebration, we're always let down by it all?

Now I expect the best and the most wonderful each time I meet with my Lord. His reign as the Prince of Peace never lets me down at the glory I encounter there.

I love this time of year, but I am learning to not put so much expectation on the people and traditions to make the celebration of the arrival of our King greater than ever. It's when I stop and think of the situation of his whole birth scenario, I can truly celebrate and tell Christ I'm glad to celebrate his coming to earth to save me and glad to celebrate the day I let him into my heart and life. Now, come again, Lord!

I was going to call Jesus' birth a simple plan...which in a way it was. But then I started thinking about all the complexities of the set-up...the years it took to put into place, to get to the point where it could be set into motion...the most important historical event of the world planned even before the world was created. Blows my mind that God would want to give up glory and peace and majesty in Heaven to come here and get dirty and die for me, so I could know his Heaven, too, one day. Amazing.

Merry Christmas, siestas!

Amanda,

I loved this post.... We went to a Christmas party this Saturday, and the family that hosted the party had four Christmas trees, each beautifully decorated in a different theme. Every room in the house was decorated, snowmen, Santa Claus, and reindeer every where, but no Jesus... Even the bathroom was decorated; I have to tell you, I felt a little weird when I was in the bathroom with Frosty staring right at me!

I want my family to focus on Jesus. Thanks for the reminder!

Love and hugs,

I really needed to hear this today, I think we all get so caught up in Christmas and so streesed out we can all forget sometimes the true meaning. I am a single mom with 3 kids I have made it so stressful for myself making sure they get what they want. The story you told about how you wanted Christmas to be last year and all you were doing, I would have proberly picked more than one fight. I will be praying that Gods gives you peace in all the area you have ask for and also that God will give me peace in a lot or areas. I wish you a your family and the LPM staff a Very MERRY CHRISTMAS, I hope God Blesses each and everyone of you this year.
Love you all

timely. always. He knows what we need to hear, and when we need to hear it (or read it). As I just raced home with exactly 63 minutes to accomplish what realistically would take 8 hours, with a hungry 4 yr old along...and the resulting stress of not even coming close to getting it done...I am lacking peace before I even begin! I will stand by you this year Amanda, I too will put aside all my expectations and frustrations and allow the Prince of Peace to come. Fully receiving the gift He brings...freely sharing that gift with those around me. I think I may only try to accomplish 63 minutes worth of stuff...before carpool pick up. Thank you my friend, for speaking the truth, always in love. Who would have imagined my cyber-girlfriends would have such an impact on my everyday! :)

Hi Amanda,

Such a good word!! I say this as I'm thigh-high in plaster and joint compound. We're trying to finish a kitchen project we started a year ago, in time for Christmas and my folks arrival from California. I'm a Texas transplant! :) At the same time, I'm trying not to curse the people who owned our home before us for adhering wallpaper to sheetrock, and I am constantly in prayer to my Sweet Lord to not have hate in my heart! Whew!! Thankfully, He complies and keeps me in perfect peace. Hallelujah!! Thanks again. Too sweet, and very timely. Be Blessed, Sweet Girl!

Much love -

Hi Amanda,
This is something my husband and I tried to teach our children as they were growing up. It was not the "norm" as they saw their friends families getting caught up voraciously with all the busyness and wrong focus of Christmas. Now that they are adults, they see the true meaning in the gifts they give not in the amount of money spent on the gift. As a parent, that means so much to me. I still find myself sometimes wanting to add "just a little more" on some Christmases but try to remind myself of the very things you wrote about.
Merry Christ filled Christmas!

This has nothing to do with this post...just had to share it with you...made me think of you guys! Enjoy!!

'Twas the night before Christmas, in Texas, you know.
Way out on the prairie, without any snow.
Asleep in their cabin, were Buddy and Sue,
A dreamin' of Christmas, like me and you.

Not stockings, but boots, at the foot of their bed,
For this was Texas, what more need be said,
When all of a sudden, from out of the still night,
There came such a ruckus, it gave me a fright.

and I saw 'cross the prairie, like a shot from a gun,
A loaded up buckboard, come on at a run,
The driver was "Geein" and "Hawin", with a will,
The horses (not reindeer) he drove with such skill.

"Come on there Buck, Poncho, & Prince, to the right,
There'll be plenty of travelin' for you all tonight."
The driver in Levi's and a shirt that was red,
Had a ten-gallon Stetson on top of his head.

As he stepped from the buckboard, he was really a sight,
With his beard and moustache, so curly and white.
As he burst in the cabin, the children awoke,
and were so astonished, that neither one spoke.

and he filled up their boots with such presents galore,
That neither could think of a single thing more.
When Buddy recovered the use of his jaws,
He asked in a whisper, "Are you really Santa Claus?"

"Am I the real Santa? Well, what do you think?"
and he smiled as he gave a mysterious wink.
Then he leaped in his buckboard, and called back in his drawl,
"To all the children in Texas, Merry Christmas, Ya’ll"

Thank you Amanda. I did the Griswold decorating thing years before the movie was released. We still joke about it. It is so easy to get caught up in the "expectations" thing and to lose sight of our of King.

Come let us behold Him and adore Him, the Prince of Peace, the King of Kings, the Lord of Lords.

When we first got married, we knocked ourselves out trying to make everyone happy, feeling like we had to visit both sides of the family (who lived in different states!). Every year since then, we've put less significance on visiting family and instead, concentrated on having "us" time. (Much less stressful that way.) However, just last night I realized that I was keeping God's gift all for myself and alienating our extended family in the process. So, this year, my intention is to make a heartfelt effort to spend time with family and loved ones and extend to them the genuine and sacrificial love Christ showed us.

AMEN SISTER!!!!!!!!

So many "things" have gone to the wayside, because honestly they just aren't important. Too much stress this time of year to 'keep up with the Jones' and NO, not you Amanda...honestly no pun intended. Just honesty and truthfulness with my sisters. I have had enough. This year has been one of huge heartache and deep valleys, but MORE IMPORTANT, AWSOME opportunities for God's grace, healing, favor and joy and yes His peace to be bestowed upon my husband, myself and our kids. I still haven't bought any gifts...I honestly don't feel like buying. We all have exactly what we need. Our Baby Jesus can not be out bought. OK OK I don't want to be scrooge. I Love to shop and give gifts AND receive them too. There is just something new and refreshing about this year that makes we want to not do anything that will take away from our real Christmas reason. Oh I am in prayer and my Father, please show this siesta what you want for our family and friends this Christmastime. I LOVE YOU so much. Siestas, I love you all and just really wish I could see your faces and give you all hugs, afterall that is what Sisters are supposed to do...that and grab a cup of coffee and talk for hours!!!

May you all be blessed. THank you Amanda for posting today...you are one of my blessings this day.

We are doing things a bit differently this year as well. With my husband traveling for the next couple of weeks, ( a little work, a little hunting), I am throwing a Christmas party for all my "girlfriends". We are going to make a donation to the "Heifer Project" in one another's honor insteand of exchanging gifts. It takes the pressure off, while still giving us good reason to get together and celebrate the true gift of Christmas, Jesus, the One and Only. YSIC, Dori

Amanda,
I have been in those same shoes when my sons were much younger. I felt I had to go all out on the decorations and make every Christmas better than the one before. Then my sons got older and started doing their own thing and the past two years I didn't even get out the tree to decorate. But this year I have recaptured that peace and joy that only comes from our Prince of Peace. I pulled out the decoration and only have my tree all decked out in my old ornaments and lots of candle and my nativity. Very simple this year because this year is the year of true peace and worship. Thank you so much for your blog reminding each of us of the Prince of Peace in all we do the season and throughout all the year.

I love those verses! They've been in my heart and head for months now. Just so happens, I found an old cassette series of Beth's on ebay (which I won victoriously) and shot that money thru on paypal like nobody's business. I'm feeling ya on the peace thing. It's a big thing for me too. I almost crossed over into Grinchville until my son and a few good friends told me to get a grip! I went from "put Christ back into Christmas, will you!" to "I'm not playing in this commercialized game again this year- no presents for you and don't buy me any!" Whew! Almost missed it, Amanda and siestas. It's those who are "in Christ" that keep me in check. It's those who are "of the world" that can throw me off balance. Jesus changed and changes everything! Let's stay focused, shall we? I read this blog and the siestas here are head-over-heels in love with Jesus. Can we make a committment to each other to fill this Christmas with Christ? I'm zooming in. Please pray I won't be naughty like Beth's new camara and collapse back inward when someone presses my buttons too many times!
Love to the LPM & Bog Siestas!
Merry CHRISTmas!

Amen and Amen sweet Siesta! This comes on the heels of a conversation that I had with a colleague of my husband's. He was going on about how he hated Christmas; how the commercialism and hype had ruined it and there was no real meaning anymore. It started me thinking about how that star shines no less dimly now than it did all those years ago. We just have to look a little harder for it, past all the "Griswold" displays and lit, blow-up yard decor. It's up to us where our focus is and whether we allow the world's version of Christmas to rob us of the peace and joy that arrived wrapped in swaddling clothes and lying in a manger. Thank you for a wonderful reminder!

blessed-tho construction has been a bit...invasive & quite challenging.

sometimes it's just HARD TO SEE the "blessing".

yaaah...you CAN'T SEE a whole lot of anything at that point. anyone ask for a white Christmas?

Amen Amanda.... in 2003 at Christmas I was fighting for my life on morphine sicker than a dog... in 2005 I was still alive and totally healed... but we had a ton of debt, 6 figures worth! In 2006 my husband had no job, we were going to have to relocate and Christmas was so unsettling... now, in 2007- we are 100% debt free! We moved to a tinier house, we've had an OPEN HEAVEN since we've gotten here and there is room for Him, for His people and even more... in this heart of mine. And my husband has become my BOYFRIEND after 15 years of marriage once again! WAHOO! :-)

When all is said and done and you've looked death and debt in the face and overcome... Jesus becomes so precious. He is a risen Savior that came as a little babe.. may we become like children this Christmas and take time to see what matters.. we never know what next year might hold.

You have a precious precious spirit Amanda and are so awesome to share your life with us.

I put a limit on who I am buying for and what I'm paying. Instead I'm focusing on my husband (who always seems to get my leftovers), my elderly father (who would prefer time with me versus any gift) and our employees (most who don't even know the Prince of Peace). But I wanted to let you know how much the session on work impacted me. I am about to head there now...but real quick...I was just thinking about how amazing the mind is. I am physically tired tonight and I am going to go in and not whine and complain about how tired I am. I have been practicing this for weeks...just going in, working, and trying to show Christ by working hard and He even gives me opportunities to build relationships with customers and share about His goodness. Anyway, where I work there can be A LOT of DRAMA and you have no idea how that one simple principle has kept me focused to just work and try to be the best worker there. Just wanted to share that!
I just finished "Stepping Up" as well and I highly encourage anyone reading this to invite people to do that study. I start it with a group Jan 7th! CAN'T WAIT! It is going to be so good for people who don't have a lot of time or are new to the word! Keep on Head Siesta! :)

Don't forget that Mary would have had to find a monogrammer and have "Prince" or "Prince of Peace" or "POP" embellished on bibs, John-John suits, burp cloths, diaper bags, blankets, ....... ;-)

We girls do go crazy most of the time but every now and again we land back on planet Earth to come to our senses for a bit BUT that is why we love being women.

So true, AJ, let's all pray for a holiday full of PEACE rather than our going to PIECES over the small stuff! You are a treasure. Jill

Thank you so much for this blog-especially today. God has used it in so many ways in my life. I have been praying for more than a year for peace and restoration between two family members I dearly love, and this was a reminder to keep fighting for that peace. Thanks for "doing life" with all of us!

Thank you Amanda for sharing that testimony. That IS the gift I am praying for this year. PEACE, in the midst of my marriage separation, PEACE in the midst of all the church parties and the going from here to there. PEACE in the midst of my 3 boys yelling at each other as I write this. Jesus IS PEACE and he so lovingly does not hold back His peace and love no matter what our current circumstances are. Glory to God in the Highest.

I have been lurking here for almost a year now without posting even once--although I've laughed and cried and been touched and taught along with the rest of you. What an encouragement this was for me today! I have been feeling sorry for myself lately that I can't really decorate my little Connecticut cape house for Christmas this year due to extensive drywall work that is happening all around me. (It's an amazing task just to keep the house CLEAN--forget beautiful!) But a drywall mess can't keep me from decorating my HEART, and that's what this post has encouraged me to do.

Such a wonderful blog Amanda. I work diligently to have all Christmas preparations done by Thanksgiving so I can spend December actually remembering why we're celebrating. That includes all cards mailed Friday after Thanksgiving and all gifts bought throughout the year and already wrapped. It's much easier to keep our Saviour in my heart when I'm not so frantic with details that don't really even matter.

Amanda,
I could not agree with you more!!!! In fact, that is exactly the place where I am this Christmas season and it seems as though, because of my renewed focus, the stress level I have created for my family has been MUCH less than usual this year! Imagine that!!! I have finally come to grips with the fact that I am not responsible for everyone I know to have the happiest of Christmas seasons. Christ alone fills the empty places. How great it is to actually slow down and allow Him to fill my empty places as well.

May this Christmas surpass all of your expectations.

In Him,
Michelle

Since "growing" up and having my own babies, I have realized the stress and strain of this time of year. I have a little boy about your sons age, also named Jackson. AND a 4 month old daughter!! Yet, it seems I cannot get my brain to readjust expectations and let myself "out" of some mental obligations. I appreciate your thoughts, and love that I am not alone in my expectations/ideas and struggle for Christmas cheer.
Thanks for the thoughts, and who wants a completely decorated house for our toddlers to tear up?!?!?! :)

This is a VERY timely word for me, too! I'm in the middle of grad-school finals week, and trying to figure out how I'm going to find time to write and print 90 Christmas letters and address and write 120 Christmas cards, not to mention actual Christmas shopping, and more decorating, and baking eight kinds of cookies ... but why am I putting all this pressure on myself? I like your goal: PEACE! I'm going to soak in that for a while ...

Hey, Amanda. Merry, merry!! It's a pleasure to meet you. I'm Susan (f.k.a. Newbie from Jacksonville).

I agree with you 100%. I sometimes think that discontentment or lack of peace is our "attackers" first tool in his arsenal. Life is great…we're being obedient servants and then someone throw us off our game with a comment or we try to meet other’s (perceived or real) expectations (know this one toooo well). Such a disguise...the whole discontentment thing....probably is the first step of all "volunteer" pit-dwellers (know this one very well, too). Thanks for the reminder to keep focused and remain content in all circumstances. P-E-A-C-E!

Good for you, Amanda! You'll be so glad that toned down. And Jackson will profit greatly.

Your post reminded me of a quote that I saved from years ago - If Jesus had not been bored with the commonplace things of life, who was I to demand ever more exciting and scintillating companions, challenges, and experiences in order to be happy as a Christian. (Keith Miller) It just reminds me to be content. And to simplify rather than complicate.

Blessings on you and Curt and your little one!

Guess what! I,too, decided to scale back the decorations AND the lights outside this year in order to have a little more peace and simplicity. In fact, I chose as my "fast" for the Daniel study to NOT put up all the Decor this year. We left it all in the attic except for the tree and a *few* outside lights! In exchange, the children and I have *made* all of ornaments for our tree this year! It was great fun and kept it simple and meaningful. I don't know what we'll do next year, but I'm sure glad we scaled back this year. It's actually been more fun!!

Thank you, thank you for your encouraging words that so many can relate to during this season! I too, after several years of "perfecting the season," have committed to finding much more meaning and worship in these days. Our 5 & 3 year old boys have so enjoyed putting up the Nativity scene and begged for days to do so. They have rarely mentioned the Christmas tree..therefore it's still not up in our house!! But God is so good and showing Himself to us through His Peace and enjoyment of this season. It's His season...not ours...His kingdom come and His will be done...Mine is way too out of hand!
Blessings to you!

Amanda! Girlfriend I could have not said it better myself! We always put so many expectations on ourselves and our loved ones at this time of year! Why do we do that? It's like you said...the most important thing we need to keep our eyes on is baby Jesus! This year has been a very humbling year for me...may big life changes...but the most humbling things of all are my boys. I have twin boys who are 4 1/2...and they remind me about Jesus and sing Happy Birthday to Him every chance they get! The Lord will even use our own babies to show us to slow down and savor His Sons birth!
Merry Christmas!

Your timing is perfect! I have once again found myself trying to make this Christmas "the perfect one", and I can get so bogged down in stressful little things that don't really matter. I'll spend way too long debating over which Christmas picture background to use on the cards or which cookies to make for my sons' 2nd grade class party (or should I just make cupcakes instead of cookies?) Anyway, your writing was the perfect reminder to keep perspective and to keep room for Baby Jesus in all the plans. When we do that, everything else falls into place.
I adore you!

I don't typically decorate for Christmas...I did last year because I was snowed in for a week and I had nothing else to do (except snowboard down the monsterous hills the city plows made in my neighborhood...that was some serious fun). This year I wasn't up for decorating either, I figured it's just me...why decorate. I forgot my brother is coming out next week...and staying through Christmas...weird... before he moved, he lived a couple miles up the street and I spoke to him twice in 11 years...now he's staying with me for a couple weeks on a job assignment. I may have to bookmark this blog...and I think I will tape those scrips to my cabinet doors...maybe carve them into my countertop! (Ok, that might be stretching it.)
Thanks again!

after a day of christmas shopping and indulging the sheer materialism of Christmas; I came upon a church sign that read: It's Merry Christmas, not Happy Holidays! Well it took all my southern strenght not to turn the car around and head straight for the church's office. In lest, I need to remind anyone Jesus was a Jew, the jewish people celebrate the holdiay hannukah, whereas other religons have their own traditions as well. But to single handedly develop such a one sided sign seems prepostorous and counter to everything Christmas is truly about. ps. Isn't it ironic how our ways of celebrating such a sweet, sane birth are so exhausting? Well, I'd best scoot so I can make my 72 cookies for tomorrow's cookie exchange (sigh).

Thanks for remindig us where our focus needs to remain this holiday.

I too have found myself distracted by expectations. And not just over the holidays. I found earlier this year that the reason I would be so quick tempered with my children at times is because I had unreasonable expectations!!

I will do all I can these next few weeks to COME TO THE END OF MYSELF (my "needs", desires, and memory making) and focus on CHRIST!

Oh and a sidenote- we used to live in Colorado and frequent Hobby Lobby... one year, my husband and I went there on New Years Eve for two boxes of fudge pop sticks (I can't think of what they are really called.) We had a contest to see who could build the most creative thing out of the box of sticks...

Hearing you say Hobby Lobby reminds me of some great times we had as newly weds 10 years ago.

Dear Siesta AJ,
How I wish I had learned what you have learned as early in life as you learned it! I'm your mom's age now, and Christmas is soooo much simpler and full of meaning for me.
First, I no longer send out Christmas cards, or the infamous "yearly letter." I respond to those who choose to write me, and that is usually those with whom I correspond throughout the year. Though I have to find a different use for the "card holder" the money saved has allowed me to send an additional 5 Bibles to China this month.
Second, I purchase almost no Christmas presents. We asked our children and our siblings to please take the money they would have used to buy gifts for us, and give to a local charity or mission. Our kids especially have had such fun deciding where the money should go! Our oldest will begin his church plant in January; the added funds were much-needed. Our daughter "adopted" an additional foster child to buy Christmas presents so they would have a happy Christmas. Our sibs donated to a local free medical clinic, etc. We only asked that they let us know where the money went, so we could rejoice and pray with them.
Third, I keep decorating simple. I devote my bay window to "all things Christmas;" small tree, my nativity sets (I collect them). It makes cleanup so much easier.
We keep the Advent wreath on the table, and light the candles. It's there when I pass to do laundry, cook meals; I see it all day and am reminded of the birth of the Savior.
Much "bless God" to you and Curt! Jackson will be blessed as he grows.
Your siesta in Oregon,
Beverly

Mary Mac, the 3 year old, determines during the ride that she has to vomit. I absolutely love this message and its meaning. This year, my family is striving for the same thing. Having been diagnosed with a genetic disorder 17 months ago and having that change EVERYTHING around me- including my family and friends- makes me want to live for and enjoy the one thing that is constant...the Prince of Peace.

Even though our family just adopted a four year old girl this August, who continues to fill our home with joy, we want to be mindful that our hearts, as well as hers', is filled with Jesus Christ.

I believe it is possible to decorate and enjoy Christmas, while still making the Prince of Peace our main focus.

I remember back several years ago we had a huge wreath made of wood and had white lights on it. It was really very pretty when it stayed up and all lit up! That thing gave us heck every year to put up. One year it blew off - another year we had it all up and several of the lights wouldn't work. My husband would get so mad.
The kids are grown and gone and we still put up a tree and decorations, but not quite as many. The other day I asked him if he'd put lights on the outside of the house and he said, "No!" and that was that. Oh well.....it's probably best.
We would appreciate all of your prayers here in Okla. We have had a terrible ice storm. Thousands are w/out power including me and my family. They say 1.5 million people are w/out electricity in the state. An estimated 1,000,000 trees have been lost. It's the worst ice storm in OK history. We have a source of heat at our home and gas to cook with, but so many do not. Keep all the electric co. workers in your prayers as well.
Thanks for the post Amanda and I'm hoping this is the sweetest, most peaceful Christmas ever!
Love,
Valerie

I lost both of my parent's this summer and it was not always a peaceful Christmas with them. We didn't really celebrate the true Christmas.

This year I will be going to one of my sister's and all of her family, including grandchildren, will be there. I am very excited about it.

I did very little decorating this year, simply becuase I did not have much time and will have no one to help me "undecorate" this year. My family was here for Thanksgiving and we decorated together.

I am adding to my name...instead of just Kathy I will use Kathy in Arkansas...there are too many Kathy's.

I am at peace now, this Christmas. As we speak my Grandfather is dying of cancer. He has lived a full life and is ready to go the only problem was he didn't know Christ as his savior and he didn't want anyone talking to him about it. The prayer warriors have been working overtime praying for his salvation and for a confirmation so the rest of his family would know we would see him again on the other side. Last night my aunt went in to him and he was awake and lucid(a rarity). He said, "The most wonderful thing just happened. I saw all of the church people who have been praying for me. I saw all of their faces. They all knew. I saw the streets of heaven. It was so much more then you could ever imagine." He kept saying, "it was so much more!" Our God is amazing! Thank you Lord!

Thank you for that reminder! My life is about to get crazy with a big Christmas party and shopping and our church's children's Christmas program. What you're saying is I shouldn't freak out if everything isn't perfect! Thank you! Cause I probably would have even though Saturday is supposed to be fun for me and my husband! Who cares if I don't have the perfect outfit! Thank you again!

Ran across this today and thought it was perfect as another comment for this post:

Christmas is not a time nor a season, but a state of mind. To cherish peace and goodwill, to be plenteous in mercy, is to have the real spirit of Christmas.

Amanda,

As a 40something mom -- been there- done that! And at times, it's still hard not to try to "create" memories instead of letting them happen! I have brass stocking holders that spell out PEACE on my mantel. One year, when life was especially hectic, I left them up for months after Christmas. My visual reminder from the Lord for peace to dwell in my home and for me to "be still" before the Lord.

As an "older mom" I have a calmer perspective than I did a few years ago. A few thoughts...

You & your family get to decide how God is leading you to celebrate His Son's Birthday...you don't have to listen to anyone else! (or magazine or TV show...)

Your kids remember the fun...and the funny goof-ups.

Tradidions can be new each year, each "season" of your life, or handed down. Focus on Jesus, family, sharing and fun.

Serve healthy food whenever posssible (to offset all the delicious sweets ; )

Attend a Christmas musical or event at another church - a fun way to see the Body of Christ beyond your own church walls.

When planning events, ask others if they would like to draw names, not exchange gifts, order pizza instead of cook, etc. Be willing to start the "let's make this easy" conversation.

Use any shortcut you can find - did you know Pillsbury now makes sheets of cookie dough - you can be decorating in only 3 minutes and NO clean up!

Merry - and Peaceful - Christmas Siestas!

I definitely feel the need to make everyone's Christmas memorable. I go into the season with the goal of simplicity and come out on the other side frazzled and worn out. I'm not sure where the shift occurs. Isn't it just like Satan to be subtle and keep us busy so we take our eyes off Jesus.

Thanks for the PEACE reminder. Definitely came just exactly when I needed reminded. Refocus on JESUS! Thank You!

Your words are so true here in Oklahoma where we are sitting in the dark for the fourth day. I woke to power and now have a house full of family to share light and warmth with. It is anything but peaceful and the decorating isn't finished, but the joy is deep and the thankfulness is running stronger than Rudolf on a cold winter's night. Peace and joy to you all.

I think you hit it on the head, Amanda. I think God intended to be clear with His Peace theme for the season, so it seems like we really ought to put some deliberate thought and action into making that evident in our lives and homes. The peace of the season is my favorite thing, but it certainly has taken some counter-culture(counter family, even!) steps to make it happen and we're still working on it. I'm with Betsy and the year round shopping and mailing at the end of November. It makes going to the mall or any store either unnecessary or not so frantic feeling. We also told our parents that they could get the children ONE gift for Christmas (we also buy one gift for each child)- we did have to clarify that as they seemed to misunderstand that one gift and a bunch of stocking stuffers didn't count and neither did a lot of gifts in one box. They love it now, and they know that they can do what they want throughout the year to build the relationship with the children (we move every few years and never within 10 hours). Anyway, thank you Amanda for encouraging us with your words to stay the course.
Blessings- T.G.

It is so funny that you are writing about this, because a week ago, I also wrote a post much like this one. http://oneofhisown.blogspot.com/2007/12/keeping-it-real.html

Now a week later, I have forgotten my own words and find myself getting stressed over finding time to address Christmas cards and bake for my neighbors. I needed this post to remind myself of my frame of mind just a week ago! Thank you so much for sharing and for letting the Lord use you to get me back on track!

The JOurney Continues in PEACE ~

We sold our home of 16 years ~ A Queen Anne Victorian 4000 square foot dream that I raised my precious ones in and wanted to be the "perfect" mom and hostess to others. Infact, I just received an email from the buyer of our home asking me if I would send her interior photos of my past decorations because she has met many people in the town that keep "bragging" on my decorating abilities. I actually felt embarrassed about it. I had tree's from the outside entry to the 3rd floor. all decorated in different themes, my home looked like something out of a Norman Rockwell painting! They used my home for tours and director/producers of 2 different films wanted to use our home. I hosted atleast 4 parties during the Christmas season each year. I had all my presents decorated with bows and the perfect gift tag. I had children parties making gingerbread houses, bake cookies, etc... 2007 Is a new year! My husband and I have moved to a small home overlooking the ocean on the central coast and my decorations are not the same. we have taken our two college sons for a week of shopping and fun in San Francisco, next week we will celebrate PEACE and FAMILY at Disneyland. We are attending instead of giving the parties this year. Our sons told me as we were traveling down highway 101 in California. " It sure is great being together as a family" Amazing, how our children let us know what is truly important! BEING TOGETHER AS A FAMILY! We need to learn PEACE and WHAT CHRISTMAS IS ALL ABOUT! I am singing it too.
LET THERE BE PEACE ON EARTH AND LET IT BEGIN WITH ME!!!!!!!
Thank you for sharing your heart with us.
With " Heaven Bound" Blessings,
Kim Safina ~ Cayucos, CA.

We are believing God for a healhty pregnancy and adoption this Christmas and it has really helped me to get in the right heart and frame of mind. Mary and Joseph were awaiting Christ's birth. They had to be excited with loads of emotions running through them at every moment. Then, the big census and the traveling right when she was due. This was the Christ child, the Mesiah who each generation had anxiously awaited and met death without! What a big deal! I know we celebrate it at a different time of year, but it's still Jesus' birthday. We should make a big deal over this season!

Hi Girls! I just wanted to leave a link to my online journal because this very topic of Peace is something the Lord has been teaching me much about during an extremely challenging time in my personal life as it pertains to painful choices made by someone very, very dear to me. I hope it will bless and encourage you. I am so thankful for our Immanuel--God with us: who never leaves us, never forsakes us, never abandons us, and never overlooks us. May we all experience the Peace that passes all understanding during this Christmas Season!

Well thank you very much for sharing this. It is very uplifting and encouraging. I fight for peace each day and I fidn it that I lose the battle because I fight too much and then peace is the least on my mind, how sad! I am trying to tame this very human nature of mine that compells me to make everything perfect. I constantly struggle with the "if I had a bigger home" thought. I have to constantly remind myself how blessed I am for having a home, a tiny one, but still a home. A home is where God is! When I let God in my home is the most beautiful one and couldn't want more.
In Christ,
Gilda

This is a day when I told my husband - "this holiday is getting out of hand". Thinking we have to get this person x-amount for a gift, because they spent x-amount. URRRGGGHHH. Your post hit me square in the face. Not once this week have I taken time to reflect on the true reason we celebrate. I have the cutest little Nativity set that is little children dressed in those clothes of long ago. Instead of passing by it...I need to sit and reflect on it.

What an awesome reminder!! I too often fall into the trap of trying to create the perfect Christmas for others - the last two years it was for my cousins who lost their mom a couple of years ago - as if a great Christmas would make up for their loss.

I had already decided that I'm really going to try to make this Christmas about who it should be about...thanks for the reminder. :) What a wise reminder that we should be after peace!!!

Love and peace to you!!

Amanda,
Just a note, shopping at the Local Hobby Lobby saw 9 aisles of Christmas decor and 1/2 of 1 aisle was for Nativity display, saw less than that at Target, Jesus was most likely born during the Spring anyway and the whole thing (Christmas) has less of Christ himself in it all the time. I love Christmas and the love and the gifts but as Christians we are going to have to live Christmas everyday as our modern culture seems to prefer just a holiday! Shalom and Merry Christmas
