Just Got Home and Saying Hi
Hey, Siestas! How are my favorite bloggers on God's green earth?
Keith and I just got home from our cactus ranch about six hours from Houston. I joined him there on Thursday because he'd been gone for several days and I missed him like crazy. He's been putting in a bunch of new water lines and troughs for our wild game (that means animals in case you're not familiar with the terminology) and was basically stuck until the job was finished. Hence, I headed West. You tend to get more attached to your mate when your kids are grown because you're all you have left within your own four walls. It's really important that you darling young wives and moms remember that one day, God and couple-willing, it will be just the two of you again. It will happen before you know it and, if you don't have anything left, it's hard to know where to start again. It's one reason some folks just start all over but there's no need. There are all sorts of adventures to have together. Just keep investing. Anyway, I didn't mean to get off on that subject. Today I mean to just chat with you about nothing.
Needless to say, I took my laptop with me so that I could sit on the porch and work on the (overcoming insecurity) book. I'm all the way to chapter 11, praise You, Lord. I'm guessing I have about five more to go. I hope to have the creative part of the writing wrapped up in a month and then the editing madness begins. Writing is not for the fainthearted or those with a strong affinity for instant gratification. Or, come to think of it, for those who can't take criticism. It is a hard profession that you only want to take up if you absolutely can't keep from writing to save your life. That reminds me, I read the coolest book recently by Jerry Jenkins called Writing for the Soul and it's penned specifically to writers OR to those who think there might be a writer deep inside somewhere. If that's you, you ought to think about grabbing a copy. I think you'd be so blessed. I read constantly but I can't say I've ever read anything specifically on writing before. I enjoyed it like crazy.
If you really want to write, you might think of tracking down some cactus and pulling up a lawn chair next to it. But not too close in case you doze off. A simple landscape is sometimes best of all. Our little piece of Texas is a great place to write because it's out in the middle of absolutely nowhere and all you can hear are birds, crickets, cows (on the ranch next to us), sheep (mostly on the ranch next to us and a few on ours), dogs (definitely ours), rattlesnakes (unfortunately also ours) and Keith's John Deere tractor.
When I've written about all my blond brain can handle, I go riding with Keith, Star (Border Collie, for you new ones), and Geli (Bird Dog, also for you new ones) in our broken down jeep with old fashioned air conditioning that comes from holes in the floorboard. We look for any animal or critter we can possibly find. This time we got to see a baby bobcat, 2 feral cats, 2 armadillos, and I have no idea how many deer. The sweetest thing of all is that we came upon a mom who'd just dropped a fawn. It was the most precious little thing I've ever seen in my life. Keith said it could only have been a few hours old. We scurried off quickly so we wouldn't upset them but I went back later to make sure the mom hadn't abandoned him. I reckon I'd have tried to feed him with a bottle and take him home with me. It would be so fun to have a pet deer in the back yard of the ministry. No, I'm not too serious. Maybe just a tad serious.
Oh, and Keith killed a rattlesnake in the barn. He was reaching right down toward it to move an old tire when he saw it. The ugly thing was rared up and ready to strike but didn't make a sound because its rattler was missing. We think one of the feral cats probably bit it off in a fight when it was much smaller.
The temperature really skyrocketed there this weekend and I must have mildly complained because Keith piped up with, "Why don't we go swim in the river?"
"We don't have our swimsuits!"
"Baby, can't you swim in shorts?"
"I don't know if I can or not. I've never thought about it before."
"I bet you can. Let's go get in and see if you float."
So we blew up a couple of tubes then Keith cut a pair of his Wranglers off at the knee (Big Mama, does this sound like your man? I think our men are twins separated at birth). I put on my gray running shorts and we headed to the San Saba river not far from our place. We splashed and talked and dreamed and planned two or three more grandkids and had the greatest time. My firstborn loves water so much. I pined for her the whole time. No, I didn't get my hair wet. I twisted it up in a clip because he'd said he was taking me to dinner afterward. It was one thing to swim in my shorts. It was another thing entirely to go into town with river hair. Not on your life.
I can't get internet there (or cell service) which is one reason it's a great place to write but I invariably miss being out of touch with Siestaville. Melissa called me and told me about the blog she posted (the one right before this one) and gave me a run down of a number of your responses. I could hardly wait to get home and take a look for myself. She and I both marveled that God has given us such a tremendously diverse community here. What a rarity in this polarized world! How many communities of believers like this do any of us get to be part of? We are blessed indeed. It's so incredibly boring just to hang with people exactly like ourselves.
One Lord. One Body. Five thousand people and one fabulous time.
Amanda, Melissa, and I love you so much.
PS. I nearly flipped over that Esther cake. Unbelievable!! Now, THAT took some talent!

When you're right, you're right! We are BLESSED indeed!
Sort of envying you being hot and going swimming in the crick. It's freezing here. Likely to snow tonight. Ain't right, no maam. Not in June!
Love you so!

We're so blessed to have you willing to share your lives with all of us in Siestaville!
I really want to know how to pronounce your bird dog's name... is it a soft g or hard g? And I kept thinking about how much your life at the ranch sounded like the Pioneer Woman! Have you ever read her blog?
Thanks for chattin 'bout "nothing" .. I sure do love you!

It was very good to see this post from you tonight!
I have always loved you, since hearing you at Falls Creek, before the whole world knew you.
I have wanted to and been encouraged by my family for a long time to write, but am suddenly being encouraged by them and the Lord a lot more.
This post was very encouraging to me, even with the comments you said about writing not being for the faint hearted, impatient, not good with criticism, etc. . .those are the reasons I haven't been published, yet!
I will look for the book that you suggested.
Once again, thank you all!
It's always so nice to hear from you! Can't wait for the new book to be published. Your baby deer story reminded me of a baby deer that roamed around my neighborhood growing up (our backyard was a large field-home to many deer and foxes). One little deer in particular had lost its momma-car accident. Anyway, the neighborhood kids named the deer Bucky (I suppose because we thought he would grow up to be a buck), and we could hand-feed it carrots, apples, etc. One time I lured the deer with a tasty treat right onto our deck and into our family room. It roamed around the kitchen and living room too...my parents were not so happy but I was just trying to be a good hostess:)
Looking forward to seeing you in Pittsburgh this weekend!!! A group of five of us is going-one newbie, love that! Hope you enjoyed your dinner in town.
What you said about the time of life when it is just you and your man is so true. We have the "almost" empty-nest thing happening and have fallen in love all over again. I love my husband now more than ever - he is a total blast! It takes work, but it is soooooooo worth it.
Thanking God yet again that rattlesnakes are not in my yard. Suddenly, I don't mind the snow so much.
You are a blessing beyond words
With much love,

Our youngest child is getting ready to graduate. We went to her Vespers service tonight. My husband and I haven't had an empty nest in 27 years. I am looking forward to it after raising 4 wonderful children. We need some time together. I so enjoy hearing about your life and your family. Thanks for all you do to spread the word of God. I am looking forward to the new book.
"If you really want to write, you might think of tracking down some cactus..."
This blew me away! This coming week I'm taking my hubby away for a surprise vacation out west. We'll be celebrating our 40th bdays but we are so excited to make this all about God and spend time with Him unlike we ever have before. AND my hubby is planning on doing some serious writing which is his dream to someday have published. Your cactus comment was so cool because that's the kind of nature we'll be surrounded by for part of our vacation while he is writing! (Hopefully minus the rattlesnakes!)
Thanks for sharing! Love you too!
Hi Beth,
Great to hear from you. Your comments about writing could not have come at a better time. I've yet to have anything published but I've been working on a novel for five years now and in my spirit I know that the time has come for me to get this thing done. I covet and welcome the prayers of anyone who happens to read this comment.
Much love,
Patti Hayes - Lutz, Florida
I love that you didn't get your hair wet... :)
Thank you Beth for letting us into all the little pieces of your life. I love hearing about how much fun you and Keith have even after your nest is empty! My baby is one, but I can't imagine her not being here!!
i have such a desire to write, and i feel like maybe the Lord has writing planned for me somewhere, somehow. my problem is that i have the desire but draw a complete blank for content about one page in. talk about writer's block - i can't even get started before i kicks in! i'll have to check out that book. thanks for the suggestion!
Hi Beth,
Thanks for your fun post! I must say, I'm plum tuckered out today (wish I could say that with a Southern accent, but I'm from California. I suppose I could add "totally," hmmm...). Anyway, I just finished my Master's on Thursday (go God!), and I'm sitting here in the midst of grading to finish my students' report cards, when I thought, "I'll take a break and check in with my fellow Siestas."
I love this blog spot - and I love that God has used it in so many ways: For encouragment, spiritual challenges, helpful tips, and also as a place just to check in with friends. That's so cool of Him!
Hey, we look forward to seeing you, Travis, and the praise team later this month in Stockton! May God keep using, blessing, protecting (rattlesnakes? Ugh!), and guiding you and your girls.
Love you Beth!
Jo
Mmmmm...loved this post! I get giddy when you talk about writing.
And animals. It would've been even better if they were giraffes or elephants.
And Amanda. Love you, Amanda!!
Oh! One more thing! I have a half-written book on women and insecurity. (oh, the irony) Now that you're writing one, that's my excuse not to finish it. Let me know if you want my stuff. ;)
Beth,
I guess I just want to thank you so much for taking the time to write on your blog. I can only imagine how busy you are, but yet you take time to send your thoughts and love our way. You are an amazing servant of God. Thank you for everything!
Love from Iowa
Thanks for the "hi". I love your random stories! We are indeed blessed to be part of this community - thanks so much for all you do!
Oh my. Not river hair!
You make rattlesnakes sound like normal. I would be freaking out and not sleeping if I knew they were on my property.
I wish my hubby would dream with me. He's so durn, I don't know, not a dreamer. I'm sure he wishes I were less of one. I've always, always, got a "hey honey, why don't we..." whatever new thing I'm inspired by/fill in the blank at any given time.
I love this blog.
PS-just started Esther with my small group yesterday. Wow, just in the intro the statement about women getting in the way of women's relationships. That'll preach.
Beth,
Glad to hear you had a good, relaxing time! I have had people tell me I should write a book, but when I sit down and try, it sounds corny and forced to me. Maybe some day... I was jazzed on Friday I had an awesome morning with God, and I went to the grocery store where to my delight the very Cookie/brownie bar mixes Amanda talked about on the blog were on sale! I bought 2 boxes so I could make a 9x13 pan of them. I'll try and get to it tomorrow. Have a wonderful week! All of you are never far from my thoughts and prayers! Love you! Joan
Thanks for the great post Siesta Mom!!! That Esther cake "took the cake"....that was to fabulous. Sounds like you and your man had a great "bonding" time. :) Most of your time sounded great, until you mentioned the rattle snakes....that did me in. I guess I will stay up in NO MI and freeze my bottom off. We are 10 to 15 degrees normal for this time of the year. Yikes!!! With out longer winter this year I am so looking forward to warm if not hot temperatures. I did hear North Dakota got two inches of snow on Sat....Bless you people up there. That is not exactly my idea of a good time at the beginning of June. Our God is so good, He puts people just where they belong. :)
Blessings to all of you Siesta's out there. I pray you all have a great week.
Blessings,
Bible Bunny in NO MI
I love to just get away and be. Here lately I haven't had really the chance to do that...and when I do, I just can't seem to be. I find myself just asking, questioning, bargaining and just begging God to allow this cycle of IVF to work. We have been going through infertility and have tried invitro 3 times. This time this month will be try #4. I have had issues with my hubby's parents and his brother- his brother has 2 children 3 months and 3 years that he cares nothing about and doesn't want to grow up and take responsibility. He has everything I want...I just can't be. It is so hard. Please pray for peace and this bitterness to go away. I am so tired...I need to just be!!!!
Love this post! I am at that time in my life where it's mostly my man & me, but today all the kids & my darling grandson (the love of my life) were here to swim & grill. Beth! Can't wait to see you here in Pittsburgh!!!!! My prayer partner & I will be on the intercession team. We are on our knees this 30 days of prayer for you and for revival in our city.
Welcome back Mama Siesta! Your girls took good care of us while you were gone. I would love to write but I keep asking God to give me several thoughts to string together that would make sense to anyone but me and I'm still waitin'! Tough weekend, my baby
(2nd of 2 boys) left this weekend to go play baseball on a team in Miami! Nine hours away. I've cried all weekend. My husband and my 1st of 2 went with him to watch the games and hand him off to his very capable coaches, I hope! Thinkin' the fuss I would have made when he got on that bus after his weekend games would have been worse then heading into town with "river hair." But I agree with you about investing. We have always been very conscious about this time that would be upon us before we knew it and I so wanted to just "dig" this man of mine after all the hardwork was completed. Ok so we are not finished yet and 2nd of 2 will be back to finish his senior year next year (woot, woot!) but we are getting a little more time to ourselves during the week this summer and as much as I am aching for that baby of mine back I am going to be a doing a little more investing in my other baby! Thanks for the encouragement! We all love you and are so thankful for your blog. I got my book yesterday before Lifeway closed and I can hardly wait to get the summer bible study started. (hearing the song "Let's git it started..." in my head!)
Blessings Mama Beth and may God continue to pour out His blessing and favor all over you and everyone else there!
Theresa
Sounds like a great time away! Hubs wants to move west but I am not so eager for all the very animals you listed. You have true hunter's wife lingo down "dropped a fawn" - you will have to explain that to our non-hunting wives- although they can probably guess! Thanks for keeping us posted:)
So glad you got to take some time to "chillax" (chill and relax)...and glad you made it back safely!!!
We missed you mama Beth!!!!
Hey Beth!
You are so right about writing not being for the faint hearted. I'm in the middle of writing my first book. I'm writing about the names of God. Could anyone suggest where I can get the Greek and Hebrew definitions and explanations on the names of God???
Heather :-)
Hi Beth,
You must have written this blog specifically for me today. I've been struggling with writing. Specifically, God has been calling me to write, and well, I'm finding it difficult. Funny thing, I remember I once told a friend that when I had kids I wanted to stay home and write. I hadn't a clue what I was talking about! I found the blog encouraging. Thanks so much. I'll see about picking up the Jerry Jenkins book.
With much gratitude from Minnesota.
Mama Beth,
So good to hear from you! I wish I could come be at another LPM...Seista Fiesta has been way too long!!
Just wanted to tell you I think about you and pray for you and your sweet family often!!
Bless you and sleep well in your "city bed". :0)
Kate in Charlottesville
Beth,
I loved hearing how you are. Thanks for catching us up! I could so identify dreaming with your man. Picturing you in your running shorts on the river (with the hair clipped), made me only ask one question. What was the temperature of the water?
Love you much!
Jina
Hey, Bethie! Glad you made it home! :)
Thanks for the tip on the "Writing for the Soul" book. I will see if I can find myself a copy.
Please pray for me. I have stepped out into a new ministry territory in the past couple of months which involves a blog for women and a facebook ministry group for Young Widows. God has been moving and I am thrilled to pieces at the responses!
Tonight, I boldly (yes, BOLDLY), shared the gospel message as my post!!!!! Please pray for the women who will read my ramblings who may not already know the Lord!
Thanks, Beth! :)
So glad that snake didn't take a bite of Keith before he gave it the smack down. I survived a water moccassin bite years ago...
Oh my, thank you for this word! My husband and I are struggling to reconnect ever since our kids left home...not one is married yet and there are no grandkids and so I totally GET having those kinds of dreams! He and I have been through a rough couple of years and I know God has purpose in what He's allowed us to experience (and what He's brought us through), but my husband doesn't really see that yet. I am praying for a renewed interest in this marriage of almost 31 years!
Thank you for the book recommendation...I will definitely be checking it out!
No doubt about it. They are twins separated at birth. What's that old saying? "You either shoot it, stuff it or marry it. "
Welcome back....Love your ranch stories as always
I smiled when I read your commentary on writing. Yes, that about sums it up....only start that journey if your feet can't bear to stay off the path. But, can I just share (anonymously, since my agent says I have to keep it hush until the ink is dry on the contract) after seven long years of training to write novels, I just learned my manuscript sold. My first book will be on the shelves in early 2011! I am like a helium balloon bopping off the ceiling. Speaking of husbands...mine cried right along with me at the news. No one but that sweet man knows the hours I've spent at a computer.
I just loved this post. Love the Hill Country, but not the rattlesnakes, thank you very much. I just started "Stepping Up" study and already in the first week, God has taught me oodles about 'down is the way up!'
This whole study is about our relationship with our Lord and Master. Who knew the 'ascent of the pilgrims to Zion' was packed with so much symbolism in regard to how our relationship with Christ begins and grows.
This is so exciting. Thanks for writing it, Beth. I praise God that God showed you 'down is the way up' and led you to share that with us.
Oh, Beth! I do love you so! I am like your soul-sister when it comes to hair! I am forever being teased about not getting my hair wet or not messing it up. It feels validating to hear someone else talk that way. :) Don't get me wrong - I love to have fun and if you see me after I've been four-wheeling you will see flatter hair than anything but I love me my fake curls!!
And you are going to town on that book! Wow - I'm impressed.
I do love to write. But I only write well when I have something in me that needs to be said. It can't be forced. I'll have to remember to look that book up - thanks for the recommendation.
Hi, back at ya. Nothing like an escape to TX countryside for clearing the mind and getting in touch with God. If nothing else, the heat and the rattlesnakes will extract a shout out to God.
I won't be doing the summer study this year, because I feel drawn in a different direction. However, I can't wait to read the blog and see what God is doing with the Siestas.
Your quiet little place sounds wonderful! EVEN with all its critters--it sounds like the perfect place to hear everything around you and let it sink in. Our Creator still amazes me on a daily basis!
There are 60 acres right behind our back fence that is leased for cattle grazing, a fact we didn't know when we bought our lot, but has turned in to the most peaceful time of my day when the cows stroll by. We have deer quite often, rabbits, armadillos, and raccoons that we're at war with over our bird feeders. We blamed the squirrels until one night at midnight we saw 3 raccoons in the tree--unscrewing the feeder to get it on the ground!! Smart little dudes!!
We have all this beauty just a few miles off the highway in College Station-I'm thrilled with this new place God has placed us in. I love being back in Texas, it's been a long 36 years away, but that makes it all the sweeter being back and we're still young enough to travel the backroads when we get the hankerin'!
Happy writing, Beth! Keep up the awesome work, you have a real gift that touches so many women. I can't wait to see what comes from Melissa's blog yesterday. We are a diverse bunch with a very common interest--our Savior! Wow!
Sorry this got so long...
Love y'all, Bobbie
Dear Beth,
One of my dreams on this earth is to write a historical fiction story around the Holocaust...I am going to grab that book of Jerry Jenkins that you mentioned and see what happens from there...I think it would be some kind of wonderful to be strolling through a bookstore one day glancing through the G's and seeing a copy of a book that I had written!! Were you excited when this happened to you??!!

I love that you didn't want to get your hair wet. I was just talking about that to my daughter's friend the other day (they are both 13). Her mom does the same thing!
Glad you had a nice relaxing weekend and that the rattler didn't get anybody.
Thank you, Beth, for the writing advice. I ordered the book. I've written a few things off and on throughout my life (had my first essay published at 17)and have had a few devotions published, along with a short humor piece and a short story online, but then the creativity stopped. I lost confidence. I couldn't think of anything new to say. Just a few days ago I asked the Lord to "establish the work of my hands". Maybe this book is the little push I need to get started again.
It's always a joy to hear about your ranch life. Before my husband began losing his sight, we did alot together at his dad's camp in the Piney Woods. He was alot like your Keith. We have good memories. Sometimes I tell him about ya'll's escapades and he laughs. God bless you and may you finish your book before your deadline!
I absolutely love you all too!
Beth, anytime you want to talk to us on the subject of what life is like after kids, and how to make it better now - please do. I'm sure there are a lot of us who need to know.
The ranch sounds wonderful. Is it like dry dusty land, or is there grass? I don't know much about west Texas - but thought it was all dusty and desert like. Swimming in the river? I would put my hair up too! Are there snakes in there too? That is what I would be worried about!
Please, please pray for my best friend Christi Shaw. Open heart sugery on June 11th. Desperate for prayer...on my face desprate. Devoted follower of Christ, amazing wife, mother of 3 and best friend to many. 33 years old. She must make it. Please. Pray.
In Christ,
Allison Lee
The ranch sounds like a wonderful place. I am so inspired when I hear of how "crazy" you are about your man! I love it! I pray that my husband and I feel that way about each other when our girls grow up (they're only 3 and 4 mo. old now). I'm so glad you & Keith had a good weekend together. My husband and I are taking off for a weekend trip to Atlanta with some friends next weekend.
I finished your Esther study about a month ago with my church & just started doing it again with a group of women that I know from various places (work, neighbors, friends, etc.). I am so very excited about it. The message of the study is something I feel every woman needs to hear--it was surely life changing for me! I have been praying for the women that would be doing this study & we should have 9 women in our group. The Lord is so good! It thrills my heart as I think of what He can do for these women as He has done for me.
Have a great week, Beth!
Love that you talked about writing today. Fed Ex just delivered my first manuscript from my editor with all the devolopmental work complete. I could have cried a thousand tears. By the time it is on a shelf, the full process will have taken two years. I had no idea.
I'm still hoping Jesus is going to lead you to do a conference sometime in the future for us girls God has called to teach, speak, and write. I would LOVE to hear your story in one fluid event and gain practical wisdom from your great experience.
Because you need one more thing to do, right?? :)))
Love you Beth!
What an awesome time, just to be away and ponder and dream with your soul mate. You just crack me up with you choice of words, it brings joy to my soul. The ranch sounds like a great place to be in the quiet of God's earth, I don't think I could handle snakes (I would just freak out and probably have to change clothes if you know what I mean. One of my highlights for the week is reading your blog it really brings laughter, sometimes tears and just a pondering and a longing to be in solitude with the God that created me. Take care, I am working hard learning God's Holy Word so I can meet up in Houston.
Love
Alexia
I can't wait for the book! SO NEEDED!! Thank you, again!
Shawn, Georgia
As I sit here reading this my heart is broken because today on my oldest daughter's 18th birthday she moved out of my house to live with her new husband on an army base 10 hours away from me...so it was no mistake that you mentioned life with grown children. I'm doing Esther with the ladies from my church so i most definitely did not miss the irony of my situation {my loosing my baby on the same day God gave her to me}. "It's tough being a woman".. when your just supposed to let them walk out of your everyday life and still go on with life as usual! Please pray for me because right now it just seems too hard. My name is Angie and I'm from Ga. Also remember my daughter and son-in-law. He is set to go to Afghanistan next year in August and she's never been away from me more than 2 weeks her whole life I don't know if she's ready for all of this.
OF COURSE you can swim in your shorts! But I'm with you, I don't even like to get my hair wet when I'm not going to town. come to think of it, I'm not very good at the spontaneious stuff and I just as soon stand in the shower as in a creek.....but I'm also for please'n that man of mine. Like you its just he and I and we are best buddies.
By the way, it is so reassuring to me that you take special care to save time out for Keith. And that you hold him in such high esteem as your spirtual leader.
I had to be self sufficient my first marriage to make it out alive and this second time, it was VERY diffult for me to give over control to my husband. I had to learn to trust this with God becasue I sure didn't trust the man and I sure didn't want to let my second husband make any decions for me. Someone gave me "Power of a Praying Wife" for a wedding gift and I believe the priciples in that booked made this marriage what it is today. The biggest thing that came from it was for the most part keeping my mouth shut about something I didn't like and pray to God for help and to be with my husband to make the right decisions. It has saved a lot of aguments and sometimes God changed my mind instead of changing his. I have actually had my husband come to me with a proposal that he had no idea I was praying about. It helps of course that your husband is also seeking Gods will also.
Well enought of that! Time to go to bed and get ready for the work week. Thanks for letting us talk to you like we really know you. I really love you tons!
Paula
Beth...U are awesome...Please share some words about your new book...Please Please!!
I love these kinds of posts. It feels like we just sat down and had a long, rambling conversation! I had my first taste of an empty nest this school year (both kids in college) and my husband and I are so thankful we still love being together! We had a blast this year! Everyone's back home for the summer (and our daughter is getting married Saturday - EEEK!) so we're back in the throes of round-the-clock parenthood and we love it. (But we know school will eventually start back - YAY!) Glad you and Keith had a good time, and I look forward to reading the new book. I teach junior high and high school girls - that sounds like a good topic for them. Have you considered a teen adaptation? Let me know if I can help with that!
Thankful for this friendship!
Beth, this is my first time posting, and I just wanted to let you know that I love you! I joined my first study of yours 1 month after becoming a Christian, and have thanked God for you ever since, even almost 10 years later. Thank you so much for helping to make Jesus real to me...it is so exciting to share a deep love of Him with someone who can put my thoughts into words. Bless you! :)
Beth, this is my first time commenting, but I just wanted to let you know that I love you! I jumped in to my first study of yours one month after becoming a Christian, and I have been thanking God for you ever since, even 10 years later. It is such a blessing to share a deep love of Jesus with someone who can put my thoughts into words. Thank you! (and I wouldn't have gotten my hair wet, either.) :)
Siestaville is inspiring to me, too! I love being in touch with so many awesome gals.
I have made new friends through blogging. Sharing our faith, hopes, dreams, joys, needs and spiritual insights brings a special kind of closeness -- a closeness with many that I have never met in person.
Thank you for providing a place for us to "gather" and get to know each other.
We love you, Beth, Amanda & Melissa!
Beth I just love hearing about your ranch adventures. We have a ranch in South Texas as well in a town called Leakey. Wonder how far that is from yours. It's so great that you just share your heart with us, whatever it is that you are feeling or doing. It's so special to all of us that you think of us siestas often. I am heading down to our ranch this week to see my man as well. Hope not to see any rattlesnakes though.
From one writing Siesta to another, thanks for the Writing for the Soul recommendation! I've not read that one yet. Gonna add it to my list.
Don't know if you've heard this before, but here's a writing quote for you by Red Smith that all writers can appreciate: "There's nothing to writing. All you do is sit down at a typewriter and open a vein." Been there, done that? :)
Dear Beth,
Thanks so much for the post tonight. It does this hurting siesta good to read some normalcy. Our group is heading into week 4 of Esther. Thanks for writing, God has changed my life through you!
Pam
Being stuck out here in the flatlands of Lubbock makes me long for a river and a tube! I think I would have floated with my hubby no matter what...regardless of the fact that I am only a week and a half from having our third child. I'm a lake girl through and through. There just aren't any out here. Playas don't count. Thanks for the reminders of building a marriage that will last when it is just the two of you again. Woohoo for 18 more years then finally some floating down a river alone together:). You always encourage and make me smile. I'm believing God for this baby. Praying for you tonight...
I found a copy of Writing for the soul on Amazon.com for .01!!
Shipping was $7 (I bought two books) but such a deal for the book!
Pam
So good to hear of the "empty nest" stories like you and Keith had. Like you said, when the kids are gone, all you have is each other, so you better have fun together and make some memories. In April, two friends had their spouses join the ranks of heaven to be with Jesus, much too soon, one 40 years old and the other 55 years old. All of you, go make some memories with those you love. blessings, Pam in San Diego
Hey Beth - Thanks for the update on "nothing" - although a rattlesnake and swimming in your shorts doesn't sound like nothing to me. When you told Keith you didn't have your swimming suit - I thought he was going to tell you something else. Boy was I glad he thought to suggest shorts.
I'm cleaning my house like CRAZY right now 'cause we've got out of state family landing at the airport in an hour.
I still have two bathrooms, a boatload of laundry, and some dusting to do.
So I'll check back in with all you siestas in Siestaville once my wonderful family is headed back south - in a just over a week. Hope you all are having a blast of a summer so far. And thank you for showing us the cake, Melissa. Just in case any of us ever entertained secret delusions of baking grandeur, we now know there is a Baking Queen among us.
I marveled. I truly marveled at that cake.
Off to grab the 409 and the Pine Sol ~ Warm in Alaska.
RATTLESNAKES!! YIKES!!!
The rest of that sounded fun, but not the snakey parts!! And now why wouldn't you want to go to town with "river hair?" LOL
Enjoyed your post. love you like crazy,
Delilah
Berryville
ps.. that cake was awesome!
Whoo Hoo, a book that is about writing and the soul... 'cause as a journalist writing for a community paper there are days when it is one hard slog of article after article. I'll have to look for it up here in Canada.
Can I confess a sliver of envy about the cactus as your writing/reading companion? I have been a writer from home for 8 years now, (since the 10 year old was 2) and have had her 2 sisters and 2 brothers in in behind me full time since then. I would so dearly, dearly love to not have to start a phone interview with the words, "I work from home, please excuse any noise in the background." I say that knowing the day my darling 2 year old is in kindergarten and I am surrounded by silence and there is not a single interruption, I will be bereft.
This week I'll write my series of articles for this projectI am working on and be really grateful that the editing process on newspaper deadline is so much less agonizing than a book. Perish the thought that I should ever be led to start a BOOK. The time horizon filled with sentence structure and slicing and dicing, and long conference calls freaks me out. I'd go live with the rattlesnakes full time before writing a book - maybe I'll float down a river instead.
Beth it sounds like a wonderfully relaxing time even though you had some writing to do.
I think that Melissa had a great idea with her post. I look forward to reading the question when I have some time to sit and read them. I also look forward to reading the answers so I hope Melissa is planning to answer some of them. No pressure though

Wow...sounds like you had quite the weekend! That story about the rattler nearly getting Keith was scary! Snakes are one thing that I think God could have left out but He didn't so must be some purpose for them!
Swimming in the river sounds like fun! I love hearing stories of long lasting love...very sweet!
I am going to order that book for my friend Robin...she is a writer and I think she'd enjoy it...thanks for the tip!
Dear Beth,
I am a Siesta from Costa Rica, Central America. English is not my first language, so I feel intimidated to write. I have done several of your Bible Studies, and I love them. We recently finished Esther, and now I am doing Believing God, with my sister and one of my cousins. I have done all of them in English but I just wish there were videos in Spanish. We do have several books in Spanish, but not the videos, and they really add to the study. I really enjoy reading your blog and the comments, it feels like a big family. I pray that some day, when all my kids leave home, I will be able to have such a great time as you and your husband. I hope to meet you personally sometime. Many blessings to you,
Your Costarican Siesta
Siesta Mama Beth;
A study about overcoming insecurities! Are you kidding me?!?!?
Ah, my soul, I love my God and all he has done for me. I rest secure in his love for me. People, on the other hand, make me crazy! If I hear one more sermon on how to be the Acts 2 church, I will scream (and I can scream loudly; I've had lots of practice;)
Life would be so easy if only people wouldn't reject me. "It's tough being a woman when you don't measure up!" Sometimes it feels like my insecurities will consume me.
Oh Siesta, bring it on!
Jillian
mama beth,
one of the things on my bucket list is to see a real armadillo. now, i've seen an armadillo before (actually my first one was on the way to the siesta fiesta in san antonio) but i want to see a LIVE one. not one that has become one with the pavement. and not one in the form of a cake that people eat (my former roommate knows every line to that movie), and not one at the zoo. just a real live armadillo looking like a bug on steroids that's ben covered in ducktape, and doing his thing with nature.
going to see georgia jan's pecan trees is also on my bucket list.
love you texas lady
Morning, My kids got home and Wes and Amy spoke at our church tonight and did such a great job. They are a blessing. The grandbabies have GROWN so much. James sang(he is 8) tonight a song in Arabic and English so beautifully. Great weekend. Wish you all could have been there. They are "home" to raise support to go back. I want to ask you Siestas to pray with me that the folks they come in contact with this summer will answer the call of God to give what He tells them to. They have many appointments with churches and God knows who in each place He wants to use to futher this ministry. Just pray with me this summer that people will be sensitive to His call. That would be great if you all would help me pray. Thanks and I love you. I took Amy for coffee after church tonight and now I cant sleep so I am hanging out on the blog reading!! Love you in AL, Vicki
I loved this post Beth! I so look forward to those day with this man I love. I'm hugging him a little tighter ths weekend....if you have a quick moment, stop by my blog. I posted about a friend of mine who just lost her husband unexpectantly. She and her four children are in so much pain and need all the prayers they can get. I would so appreciate your prayers for her. He was only 44 years old.
Thank you sweet mentor of mine.
His maidservant~Pamela
Beth,
Glad to hear from you and glad you had a great time with your man. I'm with you about getting the hair wet, but one of my kids, well, one onery daughter usually pulls me off the raft or finds a way to soak me. The Esther cake was so awesome. I wanted a bite.
Melissa's post definitely struck a chord and besides thinking that, I thought "Melissa was looking forward to a relaxing weekend and now everyone (including me) is asking questions that she will not be able to help but think about all weekend!" I don't know, I know she loves it, like she said in her post, I just hope she was able to have a relaxing weekend.
I don't know about the other siestas, but I have to say that this is one of those times I read through every blog post and felt so connected with everyone. Usually, when I feel alone, it's b/c I'm going through something very personal that I'm too paralyzed to talk about, but in the case of the 2 questions, sometimes, I do feel alone at church. It's like everyone has something to say. Now, I love the song by Matthew West, but I don't love it when everyone at church just has something to say i.e. bicker about. Anyhow, I love the song "Let My Words Be Few."
It's such a great post and I'm so thankful that she did it. To say that it was enlightening is an understatement. I even read through many of them with my husband. He teaches sometimes and it gave him a lot of insight.
I'm up 5 hours past my bedtime taking geeky quizzes on FB, when I should be snuggling with my man. He was smart to go to bed on time.
School may be out, but I have a dog to get up with and walk and rub his belly, etc. etc.
Much love to you Beth! I wish my jeep was old-timey! We used to ride around in the one like you described growing-up and throughout high school.
Beth, I am so glad you had a wonderful weekend with your man. I have 5 children and they all left home within 3 years. At first it was lonesome without the kids at home but I learned to get more involved with by husband and his interest. At first it was like starting all over finding things to do together. I am really enjoying this chapter of my life. We also have 9 grandbabies under the age of 5, so we are enjoying that too.

Thank you for the book suggestion! I have just finished writing my first book (a devotional) and it is at the editors now. Since I am a bit dyslexic, I am sure the editor's head is spinning at my spelling! LOL! I would never have written it, if the Lord would have let me out of it!
Since I have not been discovered (LOL) and the Lord has provided every step of the way, I am using a POD service. I figure this is His gift, idea and project. It has taken a lot of pressure off!
My biggest fear is that I have been sitting under your tutelage so long, I will wind up with a "Beth Quote" and not realize it! LOL!
You have taught me a lot more than you will ever know!
God Bless,
Maryellen
We, too, scurried off about 4 1/2 hours from our home to our mountain cabin/condo on Thursday. That evening, like you...oh how I can picture us with our "Men" riding along in those crazy jeeps that leak air like a sieve...anyway we are in our jeep going up the mountain to a couple of lakes and then up over a pass when I said, Babe, there is a bear! Sure enough, so we parked, cut the engine and just sat. We were so deeply rewarded....for here came another bear and two separate herds of elk and deer. Before we made it back to the house, we saw more elk and another bear! Oh my, thank You Lord for favor, for Your creation, and the time to sit with my Man.
Also, on my kindle, I'm reading a fabulous book by Charles Martin....."Maggie". As well as working through Believing God for the second time, but this go around the facilitator for a group of 14 women wanting to be in the Word this summer.
Lovingly,
Yolanda
MamaSiesta, you are so funny.
I was just thinking about you this morning because I can not seem to escape this pit of depression and I wondered if i should go back through "Get Out of That Pit". Even though I've taught classes on depression (My pastor reminds we it's not a "how to" class), it has been such an overwhelming problem lately, possibly because God is doing a lot of work with me this season.
It is bittersweet to hear stories of you and Keith, so happy for you, yet sad that I don't have anyone to talk to. I am alone a lot, and the isolation is hard.
How do you protect your dogs from threats such as rattlesnakes?
Thanks so much for sharing glimpses of your lives.
Hello Beth!
This is the first time I've ever posted, but I just had to tell you how grateful I am for the LPM blog page. It's wonderful to hear about a fellow country girl, and a weekend full of love. Thank you so much again for taking time to write on here. I've done several of your studies, and it's truly amazing how God has used you to touch so many people for His kingdom.
Have a wonderful day everyone!
-Hannah
You had me cracking up over not going into town with river hair!!! :) :) LOVED IT! hahaha
I'm so glad that you and Keith have such a wonderful relationship where you actually ENJOY spending time together. I know things haven't always been rosy between you two, but your love and willingness (and lots of God's grace and mercy I'm sure!) to work through it brings joy to my heart. I'm so glad you share things like that on this blog!!! My husband and I have been married for just over three years--and we have a WONDERFUL relationship. God has given us a unique ability to be able to communicate with one another on every level--and that communication keeps all walls down and all fights at bay. People tend to get sick of hearing that we've never had a fight or that we love spending time together, but I tell you what...we have both put God first and that makes our relationship what it is. Thanks again for sharing your heart in these posts!! You are such an encourager! (I'm an encourager too, but I've found that even encouragers need lots of encouraging!! And boy do you ever supply me with encouragement!)
Love to you!
Rebecca
Beth, I used to live in San Angelo ... if you travel anywhere near Kerrville on your way out to the ranch, you have got to stop in at Ingram, Texas. There is the sweetest and most precious outdoor theatre there called, I believe, The Point Theatre. You can check it out on-line and plan to go to one of their shows. It's right on the Guadalupe River, the shows are at night, and you'll see more lightning bugs than you've ever seen in your life! We take our girls a few times a year ... we've seen Charlotte's Web, Narnia plays, Cinderella, just to name a few. We are in Fort Worth now, so we won't get to go as often. You'll love it!
God bless, Shelli L. in Fort Worth
I love, love, love getting a new post from you! Glad you and Keith had a good time...that river sounds wonderful. You are right about the years of marriage after the kids are grown. We will celebrate 35 years in August and the last chick left the nest 5 years ago. Thank God we not only still love each other, we like each other! Have a great week Beth!! And once again, thank you for sharing your life with us and being real!!
lots of love,
Martha in MS
I was just at B&N this past week looking for a book on writing. I'm certainly no writer, but I've all but abandoned my blog for lack of creative juices, and I can't say my single life is anywhere near exciting. I found a book that provides daily challenges...so you think I would be blogging these daily things...um, nope...lol. Guess I just wanted to spend money. I will though, I will. Thanks for the book suggestion, I will have to check it out.
Also, I think the whole raising a deer would be GREAT 'cause then your hubby wouldn't have to go far for hunting season. Kidding of course!
You all are so much fun! I just love our siesta blog world!
Beth, it's Shelli again ... the outdoor theatre in Kerrville/Ingram, Texas is hcaf.com (hill country arts foundation)...click on the picture of the outdoor theatre ... they are showing Treasure Island in June and Beauty and the Beast in July! You'd love it! My husband loves it, and he's an outdoor kind of guy, too ... so I know Keith would, too.
Be careful of rattlesnakes, Beth. They turn up in the most unexpected places. Last Wednesday evening I was outside throwing the frisbees for the girls (Chica and Rubi - yellow labs). I had walked around the house 2 or 3 times to see if the torential rain from the night before had done any damage except to lay over my daisies. and I decided to pull out the leaf blower and clean up the debris from the night before. (btw - Hubby was off killing small defenseless clay birds!) I reached to move one of our rocking chairs and there he was - all coiled up. He never did rattle...and he had 6 buttons. I told my youngest daughter later, he caused me to say a word that I really thought w/God's help I had banished from my thoughts. But it is difficult to shout, "Bless the Lord!" at the sight of a rattlesnake! Any way, called a man-friend who dispatched the snake quickly with a hoe. (I don't do hoe dispatching - only pistol w/rat shot...but couldn't find it!) At any rate, I had been all over that patio and did not see him until I walked within 2 feet of him. Serpents.....YUCK!!! Oh, and btw, have Star and Geli had their rattlesnake vacines? Well worth the effort!
Judie - West Texas Girl
Trying to picture you tubing in the river and it's just making me laugh. Sorry!:) Glad you had some sweet time with your man.
Please be in prayer for a family in our community who lost their 7-yr-old son in a drowning accident last week while he was at a day camp at a local private school. Thanks!
Ok, Miss Beth. One question.
Were you not a little bit concerned that there might be snakes in the river??? I'm not so much a country girl but that would be my first thought! Sounds like ya'll had a great time.
Beth, You are SO RIGHT about the empty-nest thing and how much more you count on your spouse for company! I loved him to pieces before and love him even more after our nest is empty and 29 years have passed! These are the FUN years...when we actually have enough money to do the things we dreamed of doing when we were young but broke! Thanks for the reminder of how precious marriage is!
Beth, I just love you! I feel like you are my best girlfriend sharing your weekend adventures with me. Thank you for sharing your life with others through your blog, your ministry and your writing. I want to write so badly and have started my own blog site. I hope someday to have my blog printed into a book. (scrapbook style) to share with my family after I'm gone. My Mom is a writer too and I think I'll buy that book you mentioned, for her. Love you to pieces!
Oh honey, I love the stories and cannot believe the swimming part!! But I really latched onto that first paragraph. There's nothing left now. I have Scriptures (just for me) that I cling to, but they're all I've got besides my beloved Yeshua My Hope. I keep praying, but knowing that Mama & Siestas pray generically over me, is all that keeps me going some days.
Beth, I love you, the girls and my siestas in such an amazing way - for someone I've never met. Blessings upon you as you write for us!
Boy, did I need to hear your words today. I have had a growing longing, an ache really, to write for the last six months. It is hard to really even explain it. Sometimes I find myself wanting it so badly that I begin to question whether it is even a God-given desire. I spent some time trying to work on my writing this weekend, and found myself once again battling frustration, discouragement and despair. Yet, this morning, as I was reading Breaking Free (Chapter 30), God impressed upon me His right to authority over that area of my life as well. Then you bless me with this post today, reminding me that it will, at times, be painstaking. I am going to pick up a copy of the book you recommended. Thanks for allowing God to use you in the lives of your siestas. You are a blessing!
Your siesta in Christ,
Chrystie
Beth, you are so right about the kids being gone and just the 2 of you left! My husband and I just celebrated our 30th anniversary and we consider that no small feat since we were all of 16 & 17 when we got married!
He has traveled for most of our married life for work and it was no big deal. I would miss him and he would miss me and the kids but we always had the kids so we made it through. Now we miss each other crazy when he's gone. The kids laugh at us because we talk 4 or 5 times a day even if one of us is just with one of the kids for a day or weekend!
We sit around and plan all of our grandkids too. Two just isn't enough for us! For all you young mama's....remember what Beth told you...it will be just the two of you again one day and it's so much better when you don't have to "reconnect from scratch" but just keep going and finding new things to do together (and of course with those grandkids)!
What a blessing God gives us when we get through the hard lean times with the young 'uns and make it to adulthood (sometimes us growing up with them)with those same young 'uns! He seems to shine on us more now than ever and we feel His closeness when we're together more (or maybe we're just old enough to realize it now). I know He was there before but we tended to get caught up in every day life with work, the kids etc and didn't see it like we should have. Thankfully we see It and Him now!
I love Texas with all the vast land. I would love to have land to go to on weekends. I grew up as a girl scout and miss camping but my husbands idea of camping is a hotel room. I don't mind it because it means I get to get out of town.
My husand and I are about to be empty nesters. Our youngest just graduated from high school and is headed to Texas Tech (3 hrs away). Our middle child is still in the home going to school here and our oldest is living in Austin. I always have visions now of going to Austin and hanging with my son but that is not a cool thing to do (for him). Sitting here just thinking what will happen in a couple of months brings tears to my eyes. How I will miss having children in the local schools but also look forward to what God has planned for me.
I love when you write us your random posts! They’re so much fun and give us a peak at a day in the life of our favorite Siesta Mama! We swam in the river this weekend, too, but it was the lazy river at Great Wolf Lodge to celebrate my little man’s 6th birthday. Glad you had a great weekend with your man.
Thank you for a blog about "nothing!" I love it! Makes me feel like i popped in your back door or met you on the sidewalk as i walk my wild dog...I am sure Star and Geli would love to romp with my farm dog wanna be. :-) She can hardly stand the squirrels and nearly rips our the leash when she sees one! What a hoot!
Oh, Beth, thank you once again for a delightful post. I just love when you just write about what's going on with you. You always make me laugh which may be one of the reasons that I like you so much as laughing is one of my favorite things to do. If I couldn't laugh at life, I would not make it. I taught 1st, 2nd, and 3rd grades for 18 years so you can just imagine how much I laughed. Kids are just the funniest people in the world. So, thanks again.
Love you,
Esabelle
Of course I love love love hearing about the trips to the ranch. LOVE IT. Laughed out loud in the silence of my still sleeping house over the "not getting the hair wet" thing.
Love you Beth. Thank you for ministering to us. You are a beautiful gift. And, I can't wait for Melissa to write us back!
Blessings~
Fran
Oh, how I love hearing from you! :)
Beth, I am sitting here at Panera Bread AWWHH! after spending 8 days with my niece and her 7 children. Her baby is 3 weeks old and she had to have emergency gallbladder surgery which kept her in the hospital for 5 days and then her husband was gone for the weekend on a fishing trip with his buddies. Wow! I had forgotten how it was to be with little ones all day long with no adult interaction. Her oldest is 13 and right down to newborn. I was glad that the 4 oldest did go to school. But at night it was off to concerts and end of the school year stuff. I had such a great time. Being from a family of 7 boys it was nice to have some girl time. I feel so blessed that I am capable of helping my family out when they need me and that my husband and boys are so ok with that. I miss them dearly and can't wait to see them when I get home this evening.
We have such a great God!
I wish that I could write but my husband is the writer in our family. I do like to read though. I am so looking forward to our summer study together with all the blog family and I can't wait to see you and them all in January. I am so loving the memorizing that we are doing. Never thought I could do it but I can! It is changing my life. Praise God for His Living Word!
Love you all in blog world and you Beth, Amanda, and Melissa and oh yes Curtis too!
well since you were writing about 'nothing' this seems like a good time to tell you again how much I value this blog. You and your girls encourage me so often. The things God leads you to share while seeming like little to you can mean so much to me. I sure can't wait to meet you someday whether it be here or in heaven!
You know today is a day I'm thinking of heaven. My dearest freind's dad went home to the Lord almost a year ago... today would have been his birthday (and it IS my dad's birthday!) I wonder... does God make special birthday cakes for those first birthdays in heaven?? Much love to you all today from a very rainy and chilly canadian province (I want my hot summer now please! we do get those honest!)
I'll be looking for that book too, Beth. I've been writing for sooo long, but never really tried to get published. The Lord's been speaking to me about it alot lately, and I can use all of the advise I can get!
Love you so much,
Lynn Langford, God's Gal
It is so hard not to laugh as I read your day with your man! It sounds like a day with my man! Seriously, I could just hear my husband say get in the river with shorts and me freak out and the hair thing, I'm so with you! I live in Texas and do the things you do while at the ranch. Sometimes I think how wonderful it is to have a husband that shares his love for nature with you. We have a deer lease and it is just nice to be out with the blessings God has given us! I wouldn't trade it for the world.
Love ya!
Stephenville, TX
Beth, I cannot WAIT for your book to come out. This is my biggest struggle. I am a married mom of three and I ache over this more than I can tell you! And then I feel incredible guilt over feeling so insecure when I have a God who loves me just as I am. I believe I am a new creation, but it doesn't go to my core as it should. I want to BELIEVE GOD, oh, I want to believe God! Why is it such a struggle?
Whenever you talk about your insecurity in videos I listen up, because it helps me to know I'm not alone in mine! Thank you for dedicating so much time to writing about it. I hope it's been a very healing time for you, as well!
Thanks Beth! Love you, siesta!
Okay Beth,
I'm a hog and I have to leave just "one more comment." Can you tell I have an addictive personality? I so did not take that quiz on FB.
Anyhow, when I was a kid, my parents drug us to every nook and cranny in Southern WV. Digging ramps, hiking, going in places that vehicles should not go to see a unknown soldier's grave, going to old houses that were condemened to check them out, in caves, and I was in Summersville Lake from the time I was like two. They put a life jacket on me and there you go! You get the picture. My mom used to be a white water raft guide, now she's singing in the church choir. She's really cool. I'm so glad she's accepted Christ and is so faithful and has kept her spunk. We both are pretty clueless though. One time we were supposed to meet so she could ride with me to her daughter-in-law's baby (Bella Boo now) shower and we made all these plans, set the time and did not set a place or get cell numbers! That wasted a good hour, but we were in a town you would have missed if you had blinked. I could tell a hundred more.
However, one time when we were hiking some beautiful trail near the New/Gauley River surrounded by Rhododendrons and rock formations, I decided to it was my turn to "be the leader." I went skipping down the trail and all of the sudden, I hear my mom gasp really loud, which is so not my mom. I turn around and there is a huge rattlesnake right smack in the middle of the trail that I just skipped right by. I was told to stand still and my dad got a stick and beat that thing and killed it again after it was in like 2 pieces. I guess that kind of kept me from being afraid of snakes. Now, I would feel differently if one were near one of my children. I do have a problem with spiders, ugh, I hate them. I can go outside and throw a rock and get a snake to leave (non-venemous, of course), but when I see a big spider come in. Well, I just grab the nearest bottle of household poison (lysol, clorox, windex) spray and spray him down and then I vacuum him up and let it run, depending on his size. I've been known to let the vacuum run for an hour. This is not normal and I won't write anymore and tell the story about why I hate spiders so bad. It's my mom's fault..hee hee.
I just had to get on here and tell my rattlesnake story. I think Keith would love to visit WV. I really do. I can see him rafting (they have rivers that you could paint your nails going down, ones you will surely get thrown-out and everything in between. If y'all ever decide to go to The Mountain State, let me know, I'll fill you in on every nook and cranny.
My precious (puppy, Riley) is giving me that precious look. He's already learned. No more computer for me today!
Oh, and the reason I got on here? See, I am clueless is b/c after you write this book, please write one for teachers! The life of a teacher staying in her profession has gone way down. Of course, I know if you did this, you'd probably be asked to write books for every profession. I'll take your devotionals with me. I know that God's word applies to all of us.

Thanks for reminding us that the Lord luvs to show off for us. I ask Him to reveal Himself to me in a special way every day. On my way to church yesterday, I saw two baby deers by the road and I had to slow down and soak it all in. He know how much I luv animals. I said a prayer that they're mama was close by.
Thanks so much for being "real" and letting the Lord's love show through you.
Blessings to you, my sweet Siesta Momma!

I just wanted to say I LOVE YOU BETH!!! You made my Monday morning. You and your family are so sweet and down-to-earth. I love it when I can relate to people. God Bless!!!!! Kim
Thank you for sharing. I would like to hear more of your thoughts on "just the two of us" after your children are gone. My husband and I or maybe I should just say "I" are going throught the "just the two of us". We have weather the 1st year of college of our last. It has been more than difficult.
I would love to read your insight into "just the two of us" era.
Love Wins!
My Dear Siesta, Marla Taviano, you do not DARE get to put that book down because I'm writing on that same topic. WOMEN ARE DESPERATE FOR THIS MATERIAL! Get busy! Our takes on it will be unique. You writers out there will find that, as Solomon said, there's really nothing new under the sun and the world is full of books. Someone else will always write on something similar. You must not let that stop you for penning what God is saying to you.
Also, Sweet Things, let me say something to all of you who blog: I often tell AJ and Lis that blogging is one of the best things that ever happened to surface budding writers. It gives you a format to exercise the gift without stressing so much over every word. However, it also gives you a chance to write without an editor and someone to second guess whether or not you want to put something out there that can't be taken back. SO, enjoy the creativity! And also exercise some caution and self-editing!
Don't think for a moment that publishers aren't looking at blogs that are drawing significant readership. This is a whole new day. But at the end of it, write because you feel compelled by God and He has given you something to say. Don't just write to publish. Write to bless then give out as many copies as you can and see if the Body of Christ is edified.
You go, Girls! I'm so proud of you guys.
What fun to read about your adventures on the ranch. I have only been to Texas once while driving from Vermont to Las Vegas to see my sister. I will never forget the landscape or the sky...truly it was breath taking. Just for miles to see nothing and yet everything....you know what I mean.
I drive a jeep wrangler, a little newer model than the one you have...but I love my jeep! I never have to worry about getting up my driveway in the winter.
Anyway, thanks so much for this blog! It is really a blessing.
Blessings,
Michelle in VT
Thank you for this fun post. My husband and I have been married for 2 years and are expecting our first child in October. I love my husband so stinkin much! I just can't imagine the Lord blessing me with a more perfect, godly husband. It is so easy to get discouraged by the world-view of marriage. It is a refreshment to my soul to hear that you feel the same way for Keith in such a seasoned marriage!
Thanks for being so faithful! We all love you!
Your trip sounds like it was a lot of fun. I am not an empty nester, my husband and I are unable to have children, but I understand what you mean about keeping your relationship as man and wife up. My husband is my best friend in this world. We love to joke and laugh and spend time together. It is truly a gift from God. Can't wait to read your new book when it's finished. Sounds like it will be good. Love to you all and have a great day!
Oh Beth, you have a way with words and I just want to say thank you. Thank you for listening to the Lord and sharing your life with us.
Your words of wisdom about sharing time with your man hit home this morning. My husband and I are empty nesters, but we both seem to be struggling with the right words and tone of voice with each other. I have been praying for a restored relationship in the way of joy without irritation and I believe that the Lord has spoken to me through you. Thank you for obeying him. Now it is time for me to do the same.
My husband is not saved (Yet) but I know that it is just a matter of time, the Lord has told me to trust him and put him first and he would take care of the rest and that I need to sit back and enjoy the ride when my man is saved. Oh what a glorious God we have.
I plan on going home tonight after work and making sure that my man knows that he is the joy of my life and that the Lord chose just for me, we may only be watching our oldest granddaughter play softball, but we can do it together with joy.
We too, may go for a ride in our open air jeep soon and enjoy the company of each other! (God will be there riding with us and my man will feel his presence).
God Bless you and may God be with you as you write!

Thank you, Warm in Alaska, I too thought for a moment that the "no bathing suit" part of the story was going in a completely different direction. I just didn't want to be the first to mention it. ;-). You rock!
As for the rattler, am I the only one who considers Gen. 3:15 to be biblical license for the destruction of serpents? I don't care if they do eat rodents - buy a mousetrap!
My man killed a rattlesnake this weekend too...but we live in Waco and though on the edge of town, NOT in the country! Very thankful to God the kids weren't the ones who found it.
Sweet Beth,
Thank you for continuing to write about how much you love your man. It is inspiring to this mom of 3 young ones and it helps me to be a better wife.
I CANNOT WAIT FOR THE BOOK ON INSECURITY!
Love you,
Jenny from VA
P.S. Marla PLEASE keep writing! I need more than one book on the subject! I would love to buy yours too!!
Gald your home Beth, and on the blog. I love your chit-chat blogs along with your other blog fun.
I know what you mean about the book editing madness, I'm in the middle of that now. I try to be paitnet. Writing the story is the easy part. so, while I'm waiting for editing, I am writing the final book to that series.
I can also relate to not gonna have river hair. no-no that's not a good thing. floating on a tube, now thats fun.
Now about those snakes....eeeewwww
SHOOT EM'! SHOOT EM'!
I'm glad your man was there to protect you.
Gald your home, I missed ya.

Thank you for sharing your a little piece of your life with us. LOL! at swimming in the creek. We have a pool membership but it was too cold to go swimming and we had two kids with the flu.
The blessing was my MIL stayed overnight on her way to a conference in Wisconsin. We had some unexpected "girl time." You see, we were going to celebrate my daughter's birthday with family yesterday and of course, we couldn't do that with the flu in the house. My son and hubby went to the movies in the afternoon. We had some "girl time" to discuss things in our lives.
Very precious to me. Still cloudy and cool today, but kids are better. Praise the Lord! We are off for shopping this afternoon.
Blessings,
Mary Ann, Woodbury, MN
Missed you at church. I'm not sure anyone wants to write--it's more like being compelled, for most. I'm glad you answer that call for many to benefit.
Sounds like you had a terrific weekend, floating the river and all. And--what are we going to do about these Texas men and their Wranglers? Love ya, Annette
Thank you for sharing your life with all us out here in Siestaville, we are all blessed for our "Siesta Mama" to share so much with us, and helping us to get ahold of His Grip in order to experience changed lives. I could just see you two having a blast in that river, cut-offs, running shorts and all!
I'm going on to Amazon.com to get that Jerry Jenkins book, thanks to another siesta's "heads-up"! My Word! His book for a penny?
Incredible.
Thank you so much for "paying the price" to be able to push through and get so much published for God's glory. No one but the Master would know the price you've had to pay...worth far more than rubies.
Blessings,

Glad you enjoyed some time off in the country. I was chuckling because I really live "in the country" 40 miles from the nearest town, 180 from the nearest city. But my life is SO busy with a 2, 5, 11, and 13 year old, sometimes I wish I could go land in the middle of a Starbucks where no one knows me and needs a snack RIGHT NOW!
It's been raining here in Montana the last couple of days and last night, just before sun-down the clouds went away. The rain dripping from leaves and the nearly-sleeping sun glistening through the water drops was amazing. The birds must have been missing the sunshine too as they were chirping and singing all kinds of praise music! I wished I could have taken a video, but a small screen just can't capture the majesty of our Big Sky and our Big God!
Just a request for a little prayer for tonight... I decided to get an Esther study going for the summmer. I figured on about 15 ladies. Apparently God had other plans as I think there's close to 40 coming and they keep saying, "Can I bring a friend?"
I'm feeling a little nervous and out of my league. I know God can handle it and with His help I can too.
Blessings to you all on this summer day!
From one creative-somewhat crazy-deep thinking writer to another;)
I SO agree with you about blogging.
I actually started my blog, because my brain was tired of waking up at 4am because it hadn't " let out" everything that was on my heart.
I love your randomness of this post BTW:)
But anyway, as far as my writing personally, I think I haven't published anything yet, because I sorta " choose" on who is given something I've written.
I think its the whole insecurity thing that if someone reads what I write, then they see me.
Does that make sense? LOL.
I also would find it hard to receive money from something I write. I mean I feel like why should I get paid for having words that God placed on my heart? I honestly would rather give a copy out for free, but to publish it costs money..is there anyway around that? Anyway, I'm babbling..
going to sleep now siestas.
Have a good day:)
Angie
Siesta MAMA thanks so much for your post - it was great to hear about you time with Keith and all your writing inspiration! We miss you when you are busy - thanks for sharing you life with all of us.
GG2002
Siesta Mama...so glad to hear from you and so excited to see you this weekend! I grew up swimming in creeks and actually was baptized in the river (and fell in during another baptism not my own). Your story brought back lots of memories. Sounded like a lot of fun with your man (except for the snake). Glad you had such a good time.
See ya soon!
yes you should talk about keeping some fire in marraige, my husband is the greatest guy in the world, but also the most critical and impatient man alive. I am so tired of being called names and dealing with the critisism that I am finding it hard to stir up any love or affection after 34 yrs of it. some practical advice would help. for obvious reasons I anonymous.
Wow... that all sounds like fun (minus the rattlesnake!). I am "chompin' at the bit" for that book on self esteem!!! I need it, and my son needs it to come through me... and I'm a high school teacher so you know my students so need it... Hug!!!
Aaah Beth! Don't cha know you went to the beach with me and three kids (via audio cd) :) And all four of us got the stomach flu. Sometimes it is so odd that the person I feel I relate the most to, I have never really met.
I wish we could sit across the porch, I have a lot of talkin to do and no one to talk to~ lol.
Feeling lost, sad and disconnected. Your blog brings a smile to my heart.
Bless you.
Thanks for posting Beth. It was good to hear from you and to get a taste of what's going on in your life. You're more of a woman than me (or is that Moore of a woman!)because I don't think I could tolerate that much time in deep west Texas. My husband is from that neck of the woods, or cactus, and I've spent my share of time there. As it is I live in Arizona and definitely am surrounded by all the things you mentioned (rattlesnakes, deer, bobcats, as well as coyotes, javelina, and bears) but I also have a mall and a Chilli's just down the road. Makes all the difference in the world!
Thought of you just this morning as I was contemplating what I would say to any of the ladies in my church who might get disgruntled about the books (namely one book) I chose for our women's ministry summer book club. While I chose a wonderful fiction book and a devotional type book by Nancy Leigh DeMoss, I also chose a biography on Amy Carmichael by Elizabeth Elliot. I'd heard and read you speak of reading biographies so much that I decided I and any other ladies in my church who were game should read a good biography on one of our Christian forefathers, um foremothers. I've started the book, A Chance to Die, and I've found that it is not easy reading, but still I am thrilled to get an inside look at this woman's awesomely inspiring life and attitude. I'm just afraid some of my ladies may complain that it's to heavy and they can't get into it. I told a friend of mine, "I think Beth Moore would say, 'sometimes we need to dig a little deeper and not expect everything to be easy and fun. Sometimes it's just worth it to wade through the hard stuff to get to the treasure.'" At any rate I put those words in your mouth and plan to sweetly share that sentiment with any ladies who may complain about the task of reading about Amy. You pray for us. It's just worth it, I think. I hope they think so too!
Bless you Beth! Have a great day!

River hair. Ha!!!
I do love being a part of this blog! So fun!
Love y'all!
Oh! I am interning at the Gospel Music Channel in Atlanta....and we are going to practice interviewing people...so the assingment was to choose an artist, author, or actress to imitate.
I chose you Mrs.Beth! I'll be sure to where my hair real big that day. *wink*wink* Love you!
(what's cool... the other person has to research you to create questions to ask "you"...so my prayer is that as she researches your life the Lord would touch her through all the cool things He's done through you!)
Beth,
Please post pictures of your cactus ranch one of these days. It sounds terrifying. I took a siesta (the real meaning of the word) yesterday afternoon and had a hard time going to sleep last night. I kept thinking about you sitting on the porch listening to rattlesnakes. Seriously. Could not get over it. These are the things nightmares are made of!!!
It's always good to hear from you!
Must tell you, Mama Beth, this post was just a re-confirmation to me that God has made me a writer. I have known this call on my life for no less than 10 years now, but I have had so many obstacles in my life that have hindered the fruit production i.e. eating disorder, plain old rebellion, etc.
Although God is certainly not finished with me yet (oh praise Him!), this post came at the opportune time to further solidify this calling on my life. I am scheduled to go to Proverbs 31 Ministries' SheSpeaks conference at the end of July.....and while I'm working on a book proposal, I keep doubting myself and whether or not this is real.
Although your post was just random, I have been praying for just little glimpses of more confirmation that this what He created me to do.
Thank you for your faithfulness. I just adore you.
And I am SO going to amazon.com right now to order Jerry Jenkins book.
Love,
Amy Dalke
So glad you had a good time with your man!! We are up to our eyeballs in VBS here and LOVIN IT can I tell ya!! Have a great week siestas!
Beth - since this was a post about nothing in particular, I'm taking the liberty of sharing something sort of random that I think you'll appreciate. You've shared before that you are a queen of malpropisms. You totally came to mind yesterday evening when I walked into my parents kitchen to find my mom sharing with my neice how Christ died on Calgary. Apparently, He's Canadian in my mother's world. She did not believe me when I told her it was Calvary!
Glad you got some time out in the country.
This post had me grinning ear to ear. I could ride for hours with my sweetheart looking at deer and other Texas critters. Plus, there is something so endearing and precious about a man who wants you to go swimming with him to the point that he whacked off a pair of long pants.
Beth,
I so enjoy your personal stories. Thanks for the encouragement about being alone with our men after the kids grow up.
Love ya' Siesta Mamma!

Beth -- thanks so much for sharing. I love to hear about the writing process and I want to echo Lisa's request for the writers' conference. And I'll also echo her "like you don't have enough to do" comment too. LOL.
Writing is so hard for us .... I mean, those instant gratification girls who desire that feedback.
I'm trusting God in my latest book, girlfriends, God, and grace. Sold it to Thomas Nelson in Dec 07, slated to release in April 09. Cancelled in Dec 08...OUCH! I cried.
God is in control of this project. I am trusting His timing.
I've loved living this book and He continues to bless me with more adventures. I'm anxious that one day it WILL hit the shelves.
You are a blessing dear Beth!
Beth! We have missed you. So glad to hear the wriring went well.
I love the diversity that I find here in Siestaville. It has been a blessing and channel of God's grace for me. Thank you once again for providing this space.
much love to you!
Sister Lynn
Well I have a question about snakes. I think there may be den on my property close to my house because I've seen and killed a couple of baby copperheads.....is there a way to get rid of that den of snakes if there is one?
I live alone so it's just me.....no man to be heroic for me!
Glad you had a good time and glad you're home, we miss you when we don't here from you.
My husband and I are temporarily empty-nesters this week thanks to summer camp. Unfortunately, I am not looking forward to spending time with him and him alone. I often question if there is anything left at this point. I don't want to start over with someone else, that's for sure! Just cynical regarding whether he and I can ever enjoy each other's company again. All of you women who can claim your husband as your best friend-don't take it for granted. And remember those of us who are struggling every day to hang in there. My prayer is that, this week, God will show me how to love my husband and also, that once He shows me, I will not run in the opposite direction!
Hey Beth it was cool to hear that you feel so much for that man of yours. I have been married soon be43 years and we have just recently moved from our home of 25 years to a new one, I hope long time home, we are here trying to help a new church get on its' feet and start a outreach ministry from the church. All of that said things are a little slow in getting started and so we have played countless games of Yahztee on our back porch.Which overlooks a pond with a Beaver Dam,Heron Nest,Canada Geese Family, and Mallard Duck Family with 13 babies and they have been a delight to watch.
My husband has a very bad back after many years of work. So some days we play more Yahtzee than others and they can get really wild and crazy HA HA!!
We have definitely grown closer to each other and neither of us would know what to do if we didn't have each other. We weren't that way when we first married and there has been some very rough times but we didn't give up and I am glad because we do have the time to enjoy each other more now.
Glad to be able to share with all the siestas and know that we are all in the Family of God.
Love in Christ Glenda

Speaking of snakes, where I live we kill bad snakes but not good snakes. So as I drive up on our camp road, from being in town, I saw a snake in the road. I think it is a black snake so I don't want to kill it but to make sure, I get out of the car and walk around the front of the car to check the snake for markings. Sure enough, it is a plain ole black snake. So I say, 'Hurry up ole black snake and cross the road.' He just stuck out his tongue and slowly moved across the road. Even good snake have bad attitiudes!
We have seen so many baby animals just in our yard over the past month. Watched birds from eggs to Mama feeding them to eating at the feeders, baby ducks, baby rabbits, and even baby beavers. Glory!
I have to share this story with you about my 8 yr old son. Several months ago, he asked me what is means to raise your hands in service. I explained to him what it means and why I do it. Tears... during the last worship song, I saw him raise his little hand in the air, singing. At the end, he saw my tears of joy and gave me a big kiss, grinning ear to ear. Be still my heart!
Beth,
I am in Florida finishing up a book and facing the challenges that go with it. Your post spoke to my heart and God knew just what I needed.
You are a special woman and so loved!
:)
That sounds so awesome!!! I'm a Minnesota girl, but love to hear about all your southern adventures, with the cactus and rattle snakes and all (better you than me.)
What ever happened to your cute little dog Beanie?? I remember him from one of your bible studies and the picture of him with a little bow around his neck waiting at your door for you to come home!
Blessings,
Lisa
Can't you get an animal that eats those things?...snakes that is.
I'm thinkin' ya'll might ought to do that.
I mean, isn't eveything a part of the food chain?
Ok, I have to tell someone this! After Melissa's post, I asked my husband the same question and he said the topic he was tired of hearing about was predestination. He said, you know, God is soverign, he can do what he pleases with his creation, don't you think?
So we get to church Sunday morning and our pastor gets up and reads his scripture passage and IT IS THE ONE THAT HAS THE PREDESTINATION VERSE (in Romans 8)!!
We about split ourselves open trying not to burst out laughing!!
He read a whole passage and spoke on other themes instead of predestination, but we just could not believe it! God does have a sense of humor with us boneheads sometimes.

Beth, you are so right about the kids moving out and then it's just the two of you. We have always taken a weekend to ourselves. It seemed that with raising kids, jobs, self-employment...there was never enough "us" time. Now, we are having a blast. When we get ready to do something, go somewhere we just up and go. I do love that man of mine...almost 41 years.

What a time you had! Glad you got to get away for a while. Wish there were pictures- now THAT would have made an interesting blog! Thanks for your input on married life in the "after the kids are gone." Come September my husband and I will be there. I've said the very same thing to younger couples myself not really thinking I would be here this soon. It really does take work to keep it freah now more so than when we were young. Anyway, glad you're back, Carla
Dear Beth,
Your post was so timely. I am at the end of my Ph.D. process. Just attempting to finish writing my dissertation and today was a bad writing day. Like you said, not for the fainthearted...I was wondering what God was up to, usually I experience new inspiration to keep going (I've been a student in higher education for 12 years!), but today my thoughts seemed jumbled and not very scholarly.
So your post encouraged me greatly that I am not the only one sitting at my computer with writer's block - praying for a fresh filling of HIM to keep going and for more great and scholarly ideas!
Thank you so much,
Jenni

Thank you Beth for your honesty and insight re: Marla Taviano!
You are right on with blogging and penning!
My bro in law penned an book
(it did great in the bookstores) while his daughter was attending university. It was called EMAILS TO MY DAUGHTER. Bruce Bickel. You can google him!
Thanks Beth for keeping all of us Siesta's in the light of JESUS!
A Christian's life is the canvas on which others can see Jesus!
I am a painting in progress!!!
I have called you friends.

Hi!! So great to see a post from you. :) And yay that you're writing another book. I can't wait...sounds just like what I need. Have a great week!
Beth, you are SUCH a blessing. I really related to today's post. My hubby got bit by a rattle snake 3 years ago, 5 days in the hospital, 6 weeks out of work, his finger is permanently damaged and no strength in hand but thank God he survived it. We also have a empty nest, we discovered we could have fun without our kids, and we are now blessed with 3 darling grandbabies (4, 2 & 22 mos). Excited to see you in NC the end of July.
I just ordered the book. I have had such a strong desire to write lately, but unfortunately lack any talent for it. So I finally came to the conclusion that nobody but
God has to see it (and He is very kind about my lack of talent!)I have looked at two different bookstores in the last week for a book to help me get started, but couldn't find one for people who have the urge to write but no talent. So, I laughed when you mentioned a book on writing here today, that is so like God. I love it when He does that!!!!!! Thanks for the help.
P.S. We used to live in Texas but now live in Wisconsin. I think the snakes here look like earthworms and their earthworms look like snakes! I swear you could put a saddle on one of these earthworms and ride it!!!!!!
Love,
Cara
This is too cool. The world is a small place sometimes. I don't have a faint heart and I do have writing in my bones, more like a fire. Our church has just enjoyed having John Bisagno as our interim pastor for the last 42 weeks. That's how I found out you went to his church.
I gave him my manuscript to read. I wasn't thinking about him being a famous preacher like Adrian Rogers, I was just thinking of how much we've grown to love him.
To late to chicken out now he has it, and he said he's going to read it. YIKES!
One of my friends told me to come over here and read your post today. Think I'll get that book. The river sounds even better, except I am so askeered of snakes! Do you have water moccasins out there?
oh Mama Beth,
I just love when you write...I must say I giggled about the river hair...I could just see you telling your love that swimming was one thing but the whole hair thing was another...
I too want to tell all those fellow siestas to keep writing. I have a blog I started two years ago when I lost my sister in law I needed to get my thyought out and blogging really helped. I have about 16 journals that my dear love of my life can't believe I have kept but I keep telling them they are my journey of faith to share with my boys and future generations... Iwant to make sure they know aobut our sweet Jesus.
Mama Beth you are so real and I so appreciate you sharing your lives with us.
love all of you siestas too.

Oh Beth, love you so! So thankful for you and your willingness to be used by Almighty God! Ipraise Him for you and your ministry. Can't wait to see what He has in store for your girls. How precious you all are. Thank you for sharing your lives with us.
Waiting on your book, but dying to know what your next Bible study will be. My group is anxiously waiting!
Double blessings to you all.

Just wanted to let you know that I had 23 ladies in my Esther class that I am facilitating on Wednesday nights! I ran out of everything, including seats! I just kept saying Praise the Lord, Praise the Lord as women kept coming in! And we have all ages, even some young thangs, which is unusual for us. We also had ladies from other churches. I am so excited!
I am looking forward to the siesta study too! It is going to be an amazing summer! Then of course the icing on the cake, Deeper Still in Greensboro, NC!
Sending much love!
It's only day two of kids home for the summer. Oh for a ranch in the middle of nowhere!! It's really okay. But the question that kills me is, "Mom, what are we doing tomorrow?" Since when am I the "activities/entertainment coordinator?"
Thanks soooo much for the chat!! All of you bless us so much!
Hi Beth
The conference (I think in Pittsburg?)the siestas are talking about makes me jealous. I would love to go to one again. The last one I went to with friends was in SD a couple years ago. I live in NE and keep looking for one close by.
Thanks for the inspiration and encouragement I always receive from reading your posts and your wonderful girls posts.
PTL for you and your family

We crossed the San Saba river and passed through the Pecan Capital of the World when I got lost going from Stephenville, TX to San Antonio...I vowed then that I would get GPS! I LOVE Texas and want to move back so badly. My uncle has a ranch in Stephenville and it is honestly my FAVORITE place in the world.
Thanks 4 thinkin bout us!
You have been such an encourager...

Hey Spiritual Mom Beth:)
You had a good time with your man on the ranch, that's fun:) I like your random post too:) This blog IS fun to read, because of all the different women on it. All walks of life, it seems...I pray that you and Precious Man Keith do have PLENTY of grandkids. Lots of blessings that way:):) He could teach them how to swim in cut off wranglers and to hunt:):) What you said about writing is interesting. Criticism comes with the territory, but the blessings that can come too are worth it, right? The blessing to be used by God to teach others to seek Him more, and to know Him. To teach others biblical truths that have transformed your life, Yea, it's worth it!:):)
Blessings to you, ((HUGS)), Love in HIM,
katiegfromtennessee
True reptilian story from New Hampshire to go with your Texas reptilian story: my neighbor was out front of her lake house, minding her own business, when AN EEL DROPPED FROM THE SKY and landed right in front of her. AN EEL. Eels are long and smelly and they do not usually drop from the sky. So she screamed and everyone came running out. What to do with a large dead eel?! The economy's not so bad that we'd grill the thing, so they put it in a trash can but then noticed the eagle flying circles around their camp, so they dragged the eel out onto the dock and the eagle came back and swooped it up for dinner. Can you imagine, just going about your day and having an eel drop from the sky right in front of you?! I know God can do anything to get our attention, but only rarely does he use eels.
For Anonomous 9:22 P.M. 6-7-09
From one siesta to another, CONGRATULATIONS!
I'm on year five of my own novel writing process, but since I'm compelled by His Spirit to write this story, I dare not do anything but press on, or is it write on?
I do hope when the ink dries on your contract and when your agent gives you the freedom to discuss it that you'll let us know. I'm sure I'm not the only one who wants to read a book written by one of our own siestas.
I can't imagine how special this season is, so enjoy every minute of it.
Blessings,
Patti Hayes - Lutz, Florida
Beth: So glad you are home and had a safe trip to the ranch and had time to write and swim!
You crack me up! Only a Southern girl could read this line with the right inflection that you wrote about the rattlesnake:
"The ugly thing was rared up.."
I love to say "rared up." My Granny said "rared up," and sometimes she would say - "now don't get all rared up..." I am laughing at this so hard.
Amen to your word to the young siestas encouraging them to remember that one day it will just be the "two of them" and they need to stay connected in the busyness of life!
That is exactly where my man and I are.
In fact, the other day someone said, "how is that empty nest?"
And my man rared up and said, "I'm telling you - it ain't empty - we're still there!" :)
Much Love,
GJ
Thank you for the book recommendation I am going to check it out. I am in the process of writing my first book and it is a very difficult but incredible adventure at the same time.
I love to read this blog. Beth you crack me up. One time I was in Cost Rica on a mission trip and we went down to a beach. Mind you, right behind it was like a jungle with big trees and snakes (I'm talking HUGE snakes in them). One of the guys from the area told us to stay away from the snakes with slanted eyes. NOW THAT WAS A PIECE OF INFO I DID NOT NEED TO KNOW!
Glad you are back. Will be praying for the PA trip this weekend.
Jan
I just love posts like this from all of you! Love it, love it, love it! Wanna come for coffee in the morning? We could have such a good time chatting it up!
Love you all,
Jacki
Hi, sweet Beth.
Just checking in...
Boy, your prayers for us were heard. I responded to you, when you asked about everyone's finances...shared our situation.
Well, 10 weeks ago - who's counting - I get a call and I'm back to work consulting full-time. Working 40-50 hours a week and praising God. Miss my little boys, but I remind myself this is just a season. It's a blessing with blisters.
BUMMER------------As of today, work blocked access to the blog. I only checked it once a day???!! Well, before I could not write in and now I cannot read the blog. So bummed. So, here I am 11:20 p.m. catching up.
Well, loved ones, I'm still with y'all 100%, just not able to comment as much.
Love in Sweet Jesus,
Susan
Beth - This is my second time blogging - EVER! My first was about 5 minutes ago responding to Melissa's questions about something we wish we knew more about and something we are SICK of hearing about. It is so great to see that you write about nothing as well as you write everything else.
I just want to say THANK YOU! God has given you such a gift for Women's Ministry. I was copiously (I hope I'm using this word right, I loved it and am trying to use it more) blessed at LPL in Laramie. I was really struggling with my job and needed a reminder of God's faithfulness. Thank you!
Our small group started Esther tonight! As I was watching the introduction video, I received a spiritual slap upside the head as I realized God answered a prayer during the Laramie LPL session. Something I had been pleading with Him over for months. I was struggling with an ungodly situation and begging God to provide me an out. He did! Again, He is faithful!
thanks for your advise to young marrieds...we are going through the empty nest thing and we are seriously lacking in topics for conversation because we were so kid focused for so long...we tend to talk a LOT about our dogs!

Overcoming insecurity...I need that book. Do most people suffer from this?
Great to hear from you, Beth.
Beth, I've been following your Blog for a good year and a half. I feel like I know you! I just had to comment on the pet deer thing. Been there & done that! It's a precious thing! Wish I could share the details! Let me know if you decide to adopt!:)
Oh dear, snakes freak me out so badly. Don't think I could go knowing they were there...
Just popping in to say hello and to let you know I've prayed for you this morning.
We're getting ready to move to Phoenix for a year, and so I've started collecting boxes, packing, making to do lists and such. Feeling a little overwhelmed, but God is so all over it all that I just keep telling myself that everything is going to be alright.
Hope you have a great day. My girlies and I are going to cut our hair to donate to Locks of Love. After all, if we're moving to Phoenix in July, short, sassy hair is what we need!
Much love,
Joanne
P.S. Plus we just got back from a week at Lake of the Ozarks and I've had lake hair for a week. Not sure how it compares to river hair, but it hasn't been pretty. Didn't touch a hair dryer or a curling iron for 8 days--and it showed! If nothing else, it's made me ready for a change!
P.S. As a fellow writer, it occurs to me that you would love Madeline L'Engle's "Walking on Water" if you've not read it. It's about writing and life and love. One of my favorite writing books of all time.
You are so right, being alone with the love of your life again is the greatest. We have been empty nesters for a few years now and it is wonderful. I love my children dearly and my grandchildren but it is so nice to be with my best friend. We have some wild and crazy times.
Edy
Thanks for giving us a place to share our lives. It is much easier with one who is comfortable sharing her life in such a sweet, vulnerable, but God-honoring way. We are at the basically empty-nest season. I can't say that it is easy or comfortable. I wish I was looking forward to it, but I'm still having a hard time with it. I have a husband that is not a good relationship person. Everything is sooooo surface. I've tried and I pray so specifically for him. Now I pray for me. I know God is my strength and comforter. He is my fulfillment, but I do have moments (some that last several moments) of sadness and unfulfilled desire for a close comfortable relationship with this man I married 28 years ago. My countenance kind of drops when I read such sweet stories that are posted on this blog. The Lord is my hope and He is so personal to me; I sense His presence so many times during those intense struggles. Thank you ladies for being so encouraging and faithful to the Lord. This is a sweet blog!
God Bless You All...
Hi Beth,
Love, love, love hearing from you. xo
I can't wait to read your book on insecurity. Thanks to our marvelous Lord I have had a measure of victory in overcoming insecurity (still got some work to do yet, but I've come a long way). I also have people close to me that I ache for as I watch their insecurities make them (& often those around them) miserable.
Praying for you as you write.
Love you.....
rattle snake?? That is the ONE thing that my husband fears is snakes! We would have both been totally out of there!!!
I would love to be able to write, i have all these thoughts going through my mind and have been through alot and would love to encourage others but my problem is i can't get it from my brain to paper. The thoughts get lost somewhere inbetween!!!
have a great day!!
love the adventure!!!
Beth, we too have a "cactus ranch"--along with blackbrush...everything
either sticks you, stings you or bites you! Only those of us from South Texas would call our land "beautiful". But to us it is sanctuary...an escape from this fast-lane life for a couple of days a week. And I am trying so very hard to enjoy being alone with my husband. We are more different now than ever. The ranch is the only place we can just be together without undue stress these days.
To "freetobeme" ...
I'll pray for you today. I don't have any advice for you, but I'll pray for you. Hang in there. And may God bless you and your husband and your marriage.
My husband and I went downtown Chicago last weekend for our anniversary (first time away from our kids in SEVEN years!) and on the train ride down I noticed a woman across from me working on something. I got up my courage and said, "Excuse me, is that a Beth Moore study?" She lit up and said yes (the David one), and we proceeded to talk about the studies we had each done and how they changed our lives. Pretty cool to meet a stranger on the train and have Jesus and Beth Moore in common! :) (We're starting Living Beyond Yourself at my church's women's Bible Study this week and I'm so excited!)
We are truly blessed! We are finishing up Esther this week and I for 1 do not want it to end! I just watched week 8 's video segment because I had to go pick up my darling 10 year old camper last week and missed our study. I was fitting in the video during nap time when my 7 year old- (mini Melissa) came in plopped down beside me and asked-"Has she talked about her hair yet?" HAAAA SO funny because you had just told that you colored your own hair and was showing off good roots. My girls love to see me and you get excited about God's word together! It is awesome to watch them get excited too! We will be beginning our "layin on the trampline bible study" next week! Attended by 10 year old Payton Shay and 7 year old Addi Brynn and mom of course!
Oh.
My word verification word is "fangs!"
LORD God THANK YOU for protecting Keith from the silent rattlesnake. Protect us all from the silent enemies to our own souls. In Jesus Name. Amen.
I've been around that neck of the woods in Texas and it is beautiful in it's own unique way. I visited a place, I think it was Red Rock Canyon??? And the Admiral Nimitz museum...loved the Japanese Garden.
And I walked through an Authentic Western store in Fredericksburg that was fun to explore...wish I had bought a star Texas Rangers badge! But my favorite thing was the Sunday houses...small, adorable houses for coming into town on Sunday for church services. Just loved those little houses painted up so beautifully.
You are in the perfect writing location. So glad you took time to float in the river and "write" by the cactus. ;)
I've been planting a butterfly garden in my country heaven. Some dill and parsley are included because they are "host" plants that the butterflies love to lay eggs on. So, herbs are in my butterfly garden. Always have to prepare for babies, don't you think?
Beth, is this a hint that a little one is coming soon in your family? Just hoping...
Thought of you and your current project when God brought this across my path. I know it will bless. From Annie Dillard THE WRITING LIFE
"One of the few things I know about writing is this: spend it all, shoot it, play it, lose it, all, right away, every time. Do not hoard what seems good for a later place in the book, or for another book: give it, give it all, give it now. The impulse to save something good for a better place later is the signal to spend it now. Something more will arise for later, something better. These things fill from behind, from beneath, like well water. Similarly, the impulse to keep to yourself what you have learned is not only shameful, it is destructive. Anything you do not give freely and abundantly becomes lost to you. You open your safe and find ashes."
I am blessed because you have been so willing to teach by these principles. Thank you dear friend and Siesta.
I wish I loved my husband the way you ladies love yours. He's a frustrating man to enjoy ~ keeps everything to himself, eyes glaze over about three words into any sentence I try to share, can truly only talk about three subjects ~ himself, work and himself at work! He spends so much time following in behind the kids so that he can POUNCE as soon as they think about doing something wrong. SIGH..... He's so insecure he can't even decide where to take us to dinner ~ that kind of insecurity doesn't make it easy to make "suggestions" for improvement. So I try to be the one to change and be the example, but insert glazing eyes as well as focusing on the children's faults here. SIGH .... I pray that my children do not fall into the same deep sense of insecurity he has learned from his father following in behind him and pointing out all of his faults.
I don't know what I'll do with myself when we're empty nesters. Thank goodness ours are only pre-schoolers now and we have a ways to go, but something tell me that it's not going to get much better. But I keep praying because that's what God tells me to do. The other tasks He gives me I'm just not ready to obey yet. And that's not good for my eternal life. SIGH ......
I don't mean to be the Downer of the Day ~ I am so blessed by this blog and have learned so much. Thank you for being interested in all of us because sometimes, for some, it may be the only interest anyone has in us. Can't wait to see Melissa's response to Talk to Me! Can you imagine how much more she's going to teach me!!!
What a fun post! I love chatting about nothing in particular!
Beth,
I had to chuckle at your animals that you saw. We saw an armadillo the other day right here in Virginia (Northern VA to be exact) and my city born husband said armadillo's are just possum's with armor. (can you tell he is in the Army?)
Thanks for sharing your life! I so love tagging along!
Sounds like a great get-a-way, Beth! Siestas--any of you who happen to read this in the next hour, would you please lift me and about half a dozen young ladies up in prayer? At 6:30 tonight I am beginning a Bible study for young women ages 18-25. We just planted a new church last September, and I have really felt God nudging...then finally shoving me to do this. I am so excited to study with and mentor these precious young gals (I'm their senior by a little more than a decade)! We are doing Beth's "Wising Up" study that she did with us a couple of years ago. Pray that they will also bring their friends who need a mighty dose of God's powerful wisdom...and Beth's anointed teaching and quirky humor. We love you, Beth!

Indeed, Jenkins' Writing for the Soul is a great book for writers. If anyone is considering writing, Jenkins also runs the Christian Writing Guild (actually just down the street from me in Colorado Springs). It is a great course for those who are coming back to writing or just breaking in.
Beth, I think I'd rather write looking out over the Tetons than at cactus. However, if my man were there, I'd even write looking out over rattlers just to be with him!
Thanks for sharing your heart!

Oh Beth, I do believe this post was hand delivered from God to me, via you! And you thought you were going to talk about nothing! I am an aspiring writer, with a piece of Texas land that I also go to write on. But just Friday, I packed up my writing utensils and headed out, only to be scared off by my gazillion thoughts of rattlesnakes! Well, and of course this Texas panhandle wind. I never actually saw a rattlesnake, but the thoughts of seeing them had me running scared. I have made it as a finalist in a children's book competition. It is the closest I've come to actually being published. Thank you for this blog and the book recommendation. God knows us so well, doesn't he?
Dear Beth,
I loved imagining the scenery at the ranch and the swim in the river. So much summer fun!! Neat moments. Beth, please pray for our family right now as we have a heartbreaking situation right now. Please ask for God's miraculous healing on our behalf and that He will be glorified through it all. Thank you so much! May God bless you and give you strength and His insight as you finish your book.
Sending my love!
My youngest started college this fall. So it has been me and my man, kinda of quiet but nice.
Love you Beth thank you for sharing with us.

It is very interesting to hear you speak of writing. I finished my dissertation in March and you are completely correct, writing is not for someone who does not do well with criticism. I am in the process of working up the "umph" to write an article and to submit my dissertation for some publications and awards. I need to get back on the writing track and I find myself procrastinating. I have an idea for a book floating around in my head and heart. Only God knows... Thanks for sharing your work!!
Hi Beth, We just wanted to let you know that the Canadian girls from New Orleans will be at Pittsburg this weekend. Looking forward to hearing you speak and lots of girl time with each other.
Beth,
Thank you so much for the encouragment, once again you make me smile and bless my socks off!
Much love,
Sue
I love hearing about your adventures!!! What fun you and Keith had. As a young mom, I so appreciate the reminder to invest in your husband. It is something that I try to do daily:)
Glad to have you checking in with Siestaville! You are so loved here!
Hello Beth & Siestas! I would love to tell you about something the Lord did for me through your memory verses you posted. On last Thurs night I read almost 700 of the verses you posted. I was fighting the effects of bitterness and frustration because of a very difficult situation that is in my life at this time and I was seeking God with my whole heart for help. Through reading these verses He gave me a very clear battle plan. It was clear in my situation that: 1. I must choose acceptance. This is the new normal. 2. I must choose empathy. I can put myself in "their" shoes and I can relate. It does soften my heart. 3. I must forgive. Even though my flesh screams at the unfairness, forgiveness is best and is key. I will abide until the Lord has done His perfect work in my life. Thank you for posting your scriptures, God has used them so greatly in my life at this time. Happy memorization girls!
You are too cute... too cute.... however I would have liked to have heard some more advice to us in the trenches of childhood. : ) I just told my husband, if he doesn't ooo and ahhh over his little 10 year old's new summer bathing suit... she WILL find someone else too. Lord have mercy!
I just love you guys.

I love your stories! How fun! So cute about the river! I can just picture y'all! : )
I don't know about the rattlesnakes though... I can barely read about them... yikes are they everywhere in Texas? I guess they are probably all over Ga too... oh the thought just gives me the heebie jeebies! (sp?)
Oh but I would love to feed that baby deer a bottle! I am all over that one!
Sorry this was all kind of random! : )
I'm late popping in on this one, but I wanted to tell you thanks for talking about how much you enjoy time with your man. I know you're not a perfect couple and have your ups and downs, but it's so important for people to know that their marriages can be wonderful after the kids are grown - they just need to be attentive and invest in them while the kids are still around! It's worked for us and it just makes my heart happy to hear you talk about your time together.
Blessings,
Melinda
Just got a text from "Mom of Eleven" she is in labor with number 12! So exciting!
Thought some Siestas might want to know and could pray for her to have a sweet safe delivery!
