A Tomato Made Me Cry
I woke up this morning at 7:22 to a loud crash of thunder. In my pre-tea grogginess I could only form one clear thought: my sister is flying home this morning! I flew into a frenzy of getting myself and the kids ready so we could be at the LPM office when Melissa arrived there from the airport. But the rain, thunder and wind grew worse and I had to face the fact that she might not be arriving on time. Or anywhere close. Her flight had taken off on time but the airline web site was showing an hour delay. Then we got word that her plane was diverted to New Orleans. She's safe and sound in the airport, but we don't know when she'll make it here.
I'm so bummed, Siestas! A couple of nights ago I was scooping the goo out of a tomato before I chopped it up. I don't really like fresh tomatoes, which causes my mom to wonder how she could have given birth to me. She's been known to salt one up and eat it like an apple. Curt and Jackson like them, so I went ahead and put one in our taco salad (see below). Jackson will eat tomato wedges like they're candy, which makes me wonder how I could have given birth to him. Anyway, as I was scooping out the seeds, I was instantly taken back to when Melissa showed me how to do that. We were in the kitchen at the beach house we'd rented over the fourth of July. And I started to tear up because, y'all, that was the last time I saw my sister! The fourth of July! What is this world coming to?
Okay, I know I'm being melodramatic, but that's seriously way too long. When I count it up, three and a half months doesn't sound all that bad. But it seems like a lifetime ago.
I just got a text from my mom saying that Melissa has just boarded her plane. Praise Him! Please pray with us that she gets home safely and quickly.
You wouldn't waste a prayer on my mom either. She had the taping at Life Today over the weekend and is now getting ready for this Tuesday night's Bible study. It takes a lot out of a person.
Also, I've taken more pictures than I can possibly count this month. I can't wait to share some (possibly a lot) of them with you this week.
In the meantime, here is my Uncle Wayne's taco salad recipe. Most of my favorite recipes came from Uncle Wayne. When Curtis and I got married, he sent me a big envelope full of recipes from his and my grandmother's kitchens. It was simultaneously sentimental and practical - the perfect gift! Especially since I only knew how to cook one thing at the time and that was frozen pizza. Oh, I'm kidding, y'all! I could also make pigs in a blanket.
Taco Salad
2 pounds of lean ground turkey meat
1 to 2 cans of red kidney beans, drained and rinsed
Iceberg lettuce, chopped (half a head should do it)
1 or 2 tomatoes, chopped
2 cups of grated cheese
1 bottle of creamy French dressing
1 avocado, sliced
1 bag of tortilla chips, scrunched in the bag
Brown the turkey meat in a skillet. Add kidney beans. Cover and cook on low for 10 minutes. Meanwhile put lettuce, tomatoes, and chips in a large serving bowl and top with grated cheese.
Drain the liquid from meat/bean mixture if necessary. Pour meat and beans on top of cheese in the bowl so that the meat gets the cheese melty. (Is "melty" a word?) Then pour French dressing over everything and toss well. Put avocado on top to make it look pretty.
*Most of the time the Jones family uses lean ground beef rather than turkey. What can I say? We're Texans. I also tend not to use a whole lot of the dressing. It just depends on your taste.
Uncle Wayne's helpful tip for this salad is that it doesn't save well for later. It's tragic when you think you're going to have a few more bites later, only to find it's all turned to Play-doh. If you want to enjoy leftovers, save some of the meat and beans and chips. Then start all over with fresh lettuce, etc. You'll pat yourself on the back for such good planning. I hope you enjoy it!
*Update* Melissa made it to the office safe and sound. Thanks for praying!

No worries... the love of tomatoes may just have skipped a generation :-) My mom loves them, and I can't stand them... Same goes for oranges/orange juice... once I have kids, I'll let you know if the generation skipping theory runs true :-) Enjoy your time together as a family!!!!
Oh Amanda,
I can totally relate to what you are feeling this morning. I normally do not see my family but once a year.(At Christmas) I have two beautiful nieces that I miss so much!! I also have three sisters that I enjoy spending time with.
You are not being dramatic!! Just showing sisterly affection!!!
I will be praying for Melissa's safe arrival.
God's Richest Blessings to the LP staff!
Gina
p.s. The Blog is such a blessing!!
Praying for you that Melissa arrives safely and that you all have a wonderful time of reconnecting and rebonding this week. My older daughter, her hubby, and 3 of our grandkids live 7 hours away and we haven't seen them nearly enough this year! So blessings for rekindling sister moments!
Vicki
Amanda,
When we grow up and sisters move her and there and life happens well...we just don't see one another.
I haven't seen one sister since last Christmas and dont' expect to see her until ast least summer if then.
My other sister and I went to Nashville/Gatlinburg after Memphis and had a wonderful trip. It was our first ever vacation together and her first vacation since well....I dont' ever recall her having a vacation.
Cell phones and e-mails make you seem closer.
Hang in there and I dont' like tomatoes either!!!!
I love how much you miss your sister...Sisters do share a special bond :) I know that has to make your parents extremely happy as well...
Have a wonderful visit with you sis...
Amanda, what a morning!!! I pray Melissa arrives safely and you girls enjoy your visit.
I have a suggestion for your taco salad...one night, skip the French dressing and go find you some Green Goddess dressing(Seven Seas). Our Wal-mart typically has it but it can be hard to find...you cannot miss it, it is a pretty avacado green. It is AWESOME and makes one mean taco salad!!!
Praying Melissa arrives safe and sound! My youngest sister lives 8 hours away, and I haven't seen her in months. BOO!!
Tomatoes = yum! (minus the seeds and goop--yuck!)
bless your heart, Amanda.....food and memories so tear at our hearts. praying for Melissa to get to you safe and sound. enjoy your time. I just had a week with my daughter. will see her again at Christmas. a butternut squash makes me cry, since that's her signature vegetable to make at Thanksgiving and I won't be having any this year. (but Christmas is coming). Love, Pam in San Diego
I haven't seen my brother since the end of August, and it drives me nuts! Thankfully he's coming at Thanksgiving!
I don't think your're being melodramatic. :) I love and miss my sister too! I live in the North East and she lives out West. It gets longer and longer between visits and we both hate it!
Praying for Melissa to arrive safe. Also praying for your mom and everyone at LPM.
Blessings.
Hubby and I live in OR -- our youngest daughter, husband and 6-week old grandson live about 5 miles away. But middle daughter, husband and 10-week old granddaughter live in AK, and oldest son and wife live in VA. So thankful for skype and ichat and such, but I still miss just hugging that sweet baby girl's neck and having coffee with my kids in the morning. So happy for you that Melissa gets to come "home" for a bit.
Thanks for the recipe, girlfriend! I'd have to use beef, too. It's the Oklahoma girl in me!
That post was funny and sweet! How blessed you sisters are to have one another!
Love y'all!
Kristen (tealovingmom)
I completely understand too! My sisters live in New Hampshire and I am just outside of Washington, DC. It's just too far and the visits don't happen often enough for me. Enjoy your time together!
Which reminds me, I cracked up the other day thinking about your family tradition of sitting around the tub at the end of the day with your feet in the water...Your mom's comments about your dad's feet came to mind and I laughed out loud. :-) So random, but I had to share it.
I eat tomatoes like apples too. My sisters can't stand them.
Praying for your dear family.

Oops...forgot to add that I'll be praying for your sister to arrive safely and for God's strength to be with your sweet Mama this weekend, too!
Thanks for keeping us updated on Seista Mama and Melissa. I pray she is safely there by now.
I can't wait to try the recipe.
My friends and I started The Inheritance Series last Monday night. We will do Session 2 tonight. We are excited and can't wait to learn more about being an heiress!!!
Have a blessed day!!!
Mary H.
Have a great time with your sister this week, there is nothing like sisterly girl time!!
I pray your sister makes it home safe and that you all reconnect this week.
Tomatoes in our garden are still growing even with this hard frost.
If you want a good laugh at a tomato look on my blog and see what my son found.
Keeping you all covered in prayer
Rachel
For any of you that live in the midwest (and if you can find it anywhere else), Dorothy Lynch Salad Dressing is the perfect creamy french dressing for Taco Salad! It can't be beat - it's made in Nebraska, so it can be tougher to find, but worth it!
Amanda, I can relate to your pining for your sister. I haven't seen mine 8 months and it looks to be longer still. I won't go until they have their travel dates to Ethiopia to bring their son home. We have no idea when that will be, so I have no idea when I'll see her again. It STINKS! But we keep reminding ourselves that it is so much better to miss each other than to be content to be apart. Have a wonderful visit!
'Mater lover here!
I love them peeled, sliced and placed on white bread with heavy mayo! Great sandwich.
I'm knee-knocking for Melissa. GeorgiaJan and I have been on a flight from ATL to Houston that was scary due to hurricane somebody...Fran, I think. But seriously, we got to look down out of our plane's window and see the top of a rainbow in ALL it's glory! Praying Melissa home and maybe a vision of His Glory to boot!
God bless you sweet thangs...have a great time of hugging and squeezing.
Praying for your mom, too. I just love her to pieces!
The title of your post made me think, for just a brief second, "Oh wow. She's pregnant." :-)
But sister's coming to town after a long absence are a much better excuse.
Enjoy your time with the Moore Three Amigos. (Amigas?)
had planned on taco's tonight...thinking maybe I will divert to your recipe. Thanks for sharing.
The last time a peice of food made me cry...I was pregnant... :o) I also cried watching that channel that broadcasts political meetings and events...don't ask...
So HAPPY for you, Melissa and your mom! I know you'll have a wonderful visit! I have 3 girls of my own and pray they remain close as they get older. I have a sister that lives 13hrs away we were always very close. She hasn't talked to me since July. I have no idea why and she wont say. It's been very lonely w/o her (we talked at least 3-4 times a wk and did yearly wkend get aways)...
I'm eating tomato soup as I read this, but can't force a fresh tomato down myself in the least :)
So glad you get to see Melissa.
And thanks for sharing the recipe. Yours truly rocked out the same amount of recipes in her newlywed season as well: frozen pizza and soup. lol!
I can so relate. My baby sister is having her first baby any day now. Oh how I long to be there. I am way over in Virginia and my family is all in Texas. I visited them there in March. Once a year is hardly enough! Enjoy your time together!
Thank you from the bottom of my heart for posting this recipe! My husband can't eat beef; so this will be great for him!!!
Thanks again!
I understand how you feel... I just saw my dad over the weekend, the first time since end of August. We haven't seen my MIL since July 4 and will not until Thanksgiving. At least we have all this modern technology to stay in touch but it is not the same.
I am praying for a safe landing for Melissa and for "Siesta Mama."
I think I will try the taco salad recipe this week for dinner. Sounds yummy!
Blessings,
Mary Ann

Praying that Melissa is safe in Houston and y'all have a fabulous time together!!!!
Praying for your momma and the entire LPM team.
Hugs,
Fran
I found out today that my best friend is moving a long way away. The thought of only seeing her every 3 1/2 months (and that is optimistic) is more than I can stand. A tomato will make me cry today too.
I love bacon. I love taco salad. And, I am crazy about tomatoes.
I'm noting a trend........this blog makes me hungry.
Where's the picture that goes with the recipe?
I have a niece that puts sugar on tomato slices yet to this day,she is repulsed by spaghetti sauce. She eats spaghetti noodles without the sauce. Go figure... different foods make us all lonesome for family. I do not make french fries or spaghetti unless my son is coming because I cry so much missing him. Enjoy your family. One of God's dearest gifts to us.
You don't love tomatoes? What is wrong with you. I'm with Beth on the salt it and eat it like an apple. I say almost everything tastes
better with a fresh tomato. My daughter-in-law is like you about them, but don't worry, I love her anyway. Have a great time with Melissa!!
Hi Amanda ~ I have a completely random question and am not sure where to ask it so I'm trying right here. I've been memorizing scripture with all of you and I had thought that the info for the get together in Jan. i.e. final dates and such was to come out in October so we could start looking for flight possibilities. Did I miss that info and if so can you direct me to it. Getting to come is a long shot for me but I'm praying and hoping to find a great deal. Thanks so much for your help with this!

Praying the Moore family has a blast together! You 3 gals do some shopping for me, okay?
Love and prayers as always.
Kelli
I am the only one in my family who likes tomatoes. A nice firm tomato is delicious!
I don't get to see my sister often either so I hear ya on that one. I last saw her 2 months ago and THAT is recent for us!
Beth Moss, the event date has been firm for a while - Jan. 22-23. But we will have more details for you on Nov. 1, which is our next Scipture post. I hope that helps!
Enjoy your "girl" time together! Are you going to get a picture of the 3 generations together-Mom, daughters, and granddaughter during this visit? A possible belated big "30" celebration. Time together as a family is so precious and more valuable than any material possesion. I am discovering that when distance and length of time separates family members we learn to appreciate our time together even more. Take care!
So glad she made it ----- and I do not like fresh tomatoes either - but all my family likes them . . .
Enjoy your visit!
We make that same taco salad..or close to it, but we use fritos instead and lay out all the ingredients separately and let the guests build their own salad. That way leftovers are easy to store and re-use. I wish I had a sister!
Tammy
I'm glad Melissa made it in safely! This weather is not fun to fly in, that's for sure.
Your taco salad sounds good, tho we would prefer beef, too! I'm with you on the fresh tomatoes. We used to do a 'buffet' style stacking taco meal that was fun for big groups using almost the same ingredients. Starting with crushed chips, spanish or white rice, grilled meat or taco meat, pinto or black beans, shredded lettuce, grated cheese, guacamole, taco sauce or french dressing. It was always a big hit.
Enjoy your visit with Melissa, Jackson and Annabeth will love seeing her too!
Maybe the whole tomato thing skips a generation because I love tomatoes and have been know to eat them like an apple too! But my kids won't touch them!
I know how your feeling. I haven't seen my siblings (don't like that word) since June. Enjoy your time together! I know you will.I'll see my at Christmas-cannot wait!
Oh, and we make the same kind of taco salad except we use nacho cheese daritos. I made it the other night. I haven't got around to posting the pictures on my blog. It's one of my hubbys favorite meals.
So glad Melissa made it in safe and sound! I know you gals are going to have loads of fun lovin' on each other! Enjoy it to the max!
Prayers and blessings,
Rebecca
Have a great time with your sister. I haven't seen my brothers since April, so I know the feeling.
Love you friend-
Lisa in Kirkland, WA
I can also totally relate. I live in Kansas and my only sister along with her husband and my only niece and youngest nephew live in Dallas, well Rockwall. I just got back from a little visit while I babysat them while Dad was out of town and mom was scapbooking. Had sooo much fun with them. I have 2 teenagers, but I love being with my 6 and 7 year old niece and nephew. I still rock with them. We had so much fun! I won't see them again until December. I am very thankful that I come from a fairly close family where we relish time together. I am truly blessed there.
I didn't realize your mom was in Dallas taping this weekend. I would have died to be there. Maybe a nother time I will be there when that is going on.
Enjoy Melissa's visit. I'm off to Esther Bible Study.
Jan
I'm the only one in my family who doesn't eat tomatoes whole (on toast, or alone with pepper on it, YUCK). I like tomato soup, and sauces, but NO to the tomato in any form by itself. *shudder*
So glad Melissa got home safe. Y'all have a wonderful time together! :)
Yay! How I've always wished for a sister! I hope you have a great time with each other!
kaci
This salad is so good! I haven't seen my whole family since July, either! I know how you feel!
Enjoy your visit with Melissa....I love tomatoes....like you Mom, I could just sit and eat one with some salt on it!!! :) We didn't get many fresh tomatoes this year up here in NO MI...to cold and they didn't ripen. Broke my little heart.....
Have a great week.....will look forward to the pics!!
Blessings,
Bible Bunny in NO MI
When I read just the title of the blog, I was so sure it was going to be a Veggie Tales story! Oh well.
Glad to hear Melissa arrived safely. Hope you all have a blast!

Amanda,
I dearly love my 2-years-younger sister, too, and would not like it at all if I had not seen her since July! Even sadder, I have not seen my darling son Sam since June when he went off to grad school at UT-Austin (he LOVES it). My other darling older son John and his darling wife live just 7 hours away, so I get to see them more, but not nearly enough! Families are so so special and we need to be around them as, often as possible. I will save your Taco Salad recipe to share with my sons, daughter-in-law, and of course, my sister! Enjoy your sister while you have her for a while- I know you will!
Love,
Fran

I think Uncle Wayne needs to have his own cookbook! He is da bomb!!
Glad your Sister made it safely. Let her know I have been praying for her schooling.
Love,
Holly
Oh, Amanda, I can totally relate with the missin' your sister thing and crying over tomatoes!!
My husband and I (and our "fur baby" aka Myra, the wonder dog) moved from Kentucky to Wisconsin, a little over a year ago. I do alot of crying over...anything, too...missin' my family. I know what you mean not seeing them. I really miss my nieces and nephew (besides, the rest of my family).
I'll pray for you and you can pray for me :0)
It's been several months since I've seen my little sister, I totally get it.
HAVE A WONDERFUL VISIT!!!
blessings,
stephanie
Bless your tender little heart. Praying you all have the most wonderful time, being together.
And so sorry you don't like tomatos. That's all I had for dinner last night. With salt and cracked pepper...yum!
Melana
Like you, I only have a sister, two years younger. She moved 2,000 miles away when she got married.
(FYI-Try to see your sister a lot BEFORE you have 7 kids between you. ; )
During the busy years of having babies, we didn't see each other much. When our "baby" turned 3, we made our first family trip out west. It has taken a lot of saving and planning, but that "baby" is now 14 and can't imagine a Spring Break without seeing her cousins.
And wait 'til the first time they're all old enough for you to say, "Fix some mac & cheese, honey, I'm talking with your aunt!"
Wow! Something else your Mom and I have in common! I absolutely LOVE to eat tomatoes like apples, with the salt and everything! Really yummy! My husband doesn't like tomatoes either and his mom loves them as much as I do. My kids don't like them, though. There's a recipe of my Mom's that Josh always tries to leave the tomatoes out of. He only got away with it once. After that, I watched him like a hawk when he makes, "No,you can't forget the tomatoes! Not allowed!"
Anyway, I'm thinking that storm was probably the same one my husband saw in Dallas, where he's been since last Sunday afternoon without me.Sniff, sniff. He was telling me about this awesome lightning. We love Thunder storms, but I don't think he's ever seen a Texas storm before. I hear they're awesome! You'd probably laugh at our thunder storms from what I've heard.
Happy Monday evening Amanda:
Out west in California, we use the packet of Hidden Valley Oil and Vinegar dressing mixed w/ a bottle of Taco Sauce! Just follow the directions on the packet & add the sauce to your liking! It spices up the salad a bit. We also add sourcream and more veggies...but the sourcream is a delight!
Little Monkey's Mama
P.S. What kind of tea do you drink in the morning?
Yea, God! Thank you for carrying Melissa safely to her family.
Enjoy your sweet time together.
I saw my sister over the summer. She lives in Washington state. It had been four years ... four years ... since I'd seen her. I bawled my head off when she had to leave.
Taco salad is one of my favs, and I agree leftovers are a sad thing. At first I was a little taken aback by your version. I took my contacts out a little early tonight and when I read through the recipe I some how read goat cheese instead of grated cheese!
Turkey meat and French dressing? Wow. You southern siestas will never fail to amaze, amuse, bewilder and befuddle me. Now I can't wait to try it. Sounds yummy!!
I'm glad Melissa made it safe and sound to Texas. I won't even try to count how many months since I last saw my sister - or else I'll need some meds for sure (its THAT depressing). Oh for heaven when we never have to say goodbye and where the tomatoes are optional (I assume).
Warm in Alaska.
So thankful your sister got there safe and sound and you are not dramatic AT ALL by saying, "since the 4th of July"..it has been that long since I've seen my sister and it feels as though it has been forever. Hoping she & my brother can be here Thanksgiving. What would we do without our siblings?
The salad recipe sounds yummy, thanks so much for sharing.
Enjoy your time with your sister.
Blessings today and always,
Kaye
Matthew 21:22
Oh Sweet girl-
How I understand the missing someone that much. My best friend lives in Colorado and sometimes in the midst of a crisis (or who's kidding-just a really bad day) I am suddenly brought to tears thinking of how long it's been since I was able to fellowship with her! I just wanted to let you know that I was so glad to see a post from you today- how I've missed you!
In Him,
Andrea
I sooo understand how you feel about seeing your sister! I haven't seen my sister (or her babies!) for three months. It's hard. Hope you all enjoy your time together!
That meat/bean mixture might be good with a little bit of cumin and chili powder thrown in.
Also, pretty much all I could cook when Nathan and I got married was baked potatoes and canned beans.
i hate tomatoes too! love ketchup...and tomato soup...but the actual vegetable...i cannot stand!
Try some sour cream and add some fried onions to that taco salad.
Cheese salsa (medium) doesn't hurt either.
Hope your sister makes it home safe.
aw that is how I would feel i am very close to my sister and I think it is great that you guys love each other so much. Pray that your time together will be full of joy and that your mama can get everything done. I know we don;t know each other but i declare i feel like i know yall and and Love you and Love how the lord uses you and your family.
Y'all have had some crazy travel adventures lately. Curtis told us about getting to Memphis! Crazy! Glad she is home and that y'all get some seriously needed sister time. I hope it is the best!
Praying for your mama. As much as my brain is swimming after bible study, I can't even imagine how hers is working!
Here's the thing...everytime, I mean EVERYTIME our group begins a new study (so often something Beth Mooreish) we meet for taco salad and the intro video! Seriously, 10 studies, 10 taco salads. I do believe the recipe should be included in the leader's guide. Variation...add sourcream, salsa, onions (just sit a little farther apart if including onions)
Yaaaay ground turkey!!! I use ground turkey in place of all of my ground beef recipes. I rarely see ground turkey actually written in a recipe. I switched long ago because my dad had colon cancer and red meat is one of those foods to be "eaten in moderaton". My kids don't even know the difference and the looks on their faces the first time they tried meat loaf from a restraunt was priceless. I was a memeber of one of those cooking clubs last summer and most of the recipes were ground beef. I tried to get the ladies to switch, nothing doing. I did get some to mix the meats but apparently that didn't go over so well with the husbands (there were complaints that the meat had a blue color). Now I cook my recipes with ground turkey all alone.
The recipe sounds wonderful and I will try it. Not all of us like tomatoes either but it's the avacado I long for them to love :0)
Janet NC
PS I'm glad Melissa made it safely. I'm glad you are so close. I don't have a sister and miss one when I hear sentiments like yours but I have many wonderful friends who feel like sisters to me.
Maybe pray for missionaries who go much longer than 3.5 months without seeing their families. Thanks!
I'm glad your sister arrived OK. The recipe thing is a wonderful idea. A friend of mine gathered family recipes (copied the originals in handwriting when they could) from mothers, grandmothers, etc., from both sides of the family for her niece's wedding. Several tears were shed over it to see great grandma's hand written recipe. It's an idea I'm planning on remembering for my kids.
Enjoy your sister time. Sometimes you just need to see your sister and you don't know it until you don't get to.
I am so jealous! I didn't know anybody with two kids could wake up at 7:22! Our day usually starts at 5:30! You are blessed! Thankful that Melissa made it in.
Lord bless,
Crissy TN
Amanda! I get it! I have a younger brother who is more precious to me that words can say. We lost our older brother to cancer a few years ago, so we're even closer than before...because we're what's left, you know? The last time I saw Alex was the Fourth of July, and I've cried over it multiple times. You're not strange. It's a close family thing...and it's a beautiful thing. I get to see Alex at Thanksgiving, and I'm counting the days. I guess this happens as you grow up and each have seperate lives in seperate places..the only problem is my heart is NOT seperate! Hugs to you today, sweet girl...I feel you!
I used to have the same problem with my taco salad getting yucky. So now we don't put the chips in the bowl. We crumble them on each plate then pile the salad on top. The lettuce does get a little mushy but we usually don't have much leftover. =)
I'm glad Mrs. Melissa made it ok:) I know that I really miss my older sis when I can't see her for long periods of time. She is coming back to TN for Thanksgiving!! Love my older sis:) I am praying for Spiritual Mom Beth, Rev. study today:) Your taco salad recipe looks good, I'm going to print it off:)
katiegfromtennessee
I'm so glad she made it safe. You got me right in the heart because I miss my baby sister so much, too. Funny enough, she lives in New Orleans. I would have traded places with Melissa yesterday to be hear her.
As you read this comment, would you please say a quick prayer for her to know our Lord and Savior. She is my heart and I can't imagine eternity without her.
Glad to read Melissa make it safely.
My sisters give me their tomatoes when we go out to eat.
I am different. I think salad should taste good without dressing. I will try it that way.
We always did our taco salads in a "bar style" which means we did have left over the next day. Each individual did their own plate instead of mixing everything together in one big bowl. The freshly, grated cheese still melts the next day with the help of the microwave to heat the remaining meat.
Trust me the treat of taco salad the next day is a real treat!! Especially when everything is stored separately the night before.
I totally get it! I currently live in Florida but grew up in Louisiana. Anyone who says Florida is the South is sadly mistaken.
I'm headed back to the Promised Land [that's Louisiana, just to clarify] with my 3 month old little girl FOR THE FIRST TIME since she was born. I've done a jig in my kitchen every day for the past week to express my mounting excitement!!
Reuniting with family, sisters for sure, is like a little glimpse of heaven, I think!
Have fun!
I am glad your sister made it safe and sound and hope you get to spend lots of time together and make sweet memories. My sister and her family just left for the mission field. They are located in SouthAsia and won't be home for 3 years. My husband and I are going to try to go over there somewhere in the middle. It hurts bad that I am missing sister time and sweet time with my nieces and nephew and they are missing time with thier cousins here but the work they are doing is God lead. We already see some of the bonds they are forming with people and they have only been gone a few weeks. Please pray for my sister, her husband, and thier three kids as they spread the word throughout a lost land. Once the truth is set free you can't stop it!
Thanks for the recipe Amanda! I could eat Tex Mex every day of the week...and breakfast too! So glad your sis is there safe and sound. Praise the LORD! \0/ (this is my little stick man praising the Lord for you!)
I hope it is ok to write a comment that is not related to the message. But I think we need to pray for children that no one prays for. I'm talking about the children in you neighborhood you see everyday. Heads covered in hoodies eyes down. Such sadness. they need protection and love.
Amanda,
Enjoy your time together with your sister and family!!
Anne in MO
Oh, how I understand. I just reunited with my brother and family in July of this year after a 4 year separation while they were serving the Lord in Cameroon, West Africa. They are home for a year of furlough and believe me, we plan to make lots of memories over this year. My sister-in-law was able to attend LPL Memphis with me and other family members. My favorite part will be several days in the Smoky Mountains in November. We've rented cabins and the entire extended family will be there. Whoo hoo!!!
Oh, and I love tomatoes also. Sorry to hear you don't like them so much. Can't wait to try your taco salad recipe. Maybe I'll take ingredients to the mountains!
OH, I am so excited to be reading this blog! I recently moved from MI to CT to be married, and my small group is doing the "Daniel" study, with which, of course, I am enthralled. I have a penchant for knowing things, so of course I had to visit the website after the Bible Study, and then, of course I had to visit this fabulous blog! Because I also have a penchant for sharing, you can only imagine my delight to see that all three Moore women contributed. I just adore blogs, especially good blogs by interesting women, and I consider it only God and thank HIM that the first blog I read was the one about the tomato. I miss my baby sister too.
Cheers to you three, Cheers to Siestas, and Cheers to Jesus!
Love avacado and tomatoes are okay if they are fresh from the garden but I too am a very picky eater! :)
I feel your pain. I haven't seen my one sister since the summer and the other, it's probably a year. Even longer since we were all three together. I miss that. I speak to both of them pretty regularly over the phone and thru facebook but it's obviously not the same.
Praying Melissa got in all safe and sound.
ENJOY your time together..... Your mom is amazing. Praying that the Lord will give her extra strength and blessings tonight as she speaks.
Happy Heart!
PS Enjoy your shopping time together! I can hardly shop without my mom and sisters.
Amanda, I totally understand how you feel! I just spent the last week in Florida for my brothers wedding. All 9 of my crazy full blooded brothers and sisters were home for the first time in over a year. Nephews, neices, cousins, husbands and wives were all there as well. Everytime I leave I NEVER make it through security at the airport without breaking down. Especially this time. I always feel like such a weirdo.
That's great you are getting to visit with your sister. I have a brother that I haven't seen in almost four years. Not my choice, his and his wife's choice. I have three kids and they have never seen my two youngest children.
Hope you have a wonderfully blessed visit with her.
I got the updated breaking free today for my bday (in dec)! I am so excited I can hardly stand it! Morgan my four year old said mom lets turn out the lights we are at the dollar theater (to watch the dvd). =) Fist pumps and cheers!
ps I am going to lead it to a group of women who have been released from prison! SO EXCITED!
Oh, dear, Oh dear!!! You must never use French dressing on anything remotely Mexican!! No! No! Salsa....salsa.........salsa!! Everything Mexican is better with salsa. Think about it! French - Mexican - French - Mexican.
Just read my friend, Cindy Foote's FB status and she said this, "Please pray for James Robison!!!! He is in a hospital with serious complications from hip surgery and a staff infection. This is serious and he needs our prayers as he is in a lot of pain." Is this our James?
Tomatoes are the BEST, especially when they're fresh off the vine. My mom used to pick one out of our garden, rinse it with water from the hose, and sit down in the lawn chair to enjoy it. I carry on that tradition today! Once when my mom was visiting us, she bought some vine-ripened tomatoes for me at the grocery store. This was in the dead of winter, and they were expensive. She told me I didn't have to share, even with her! I sat at the kitchen table with the salt shaker and had a great time.
I understand your feelings about seeing your sister. Mine lives in OK, I'm in NM, and we don't see each other much. The last time was at Christmas. We talk on the phone regularly and that helps. We are planning to be together at Christmas. We're both excited!
I like tomatoes. But I don't like the seeds. I have to wash those out. I especially can't stand to eat one of those 'cherry' tomatoes that 'squirt' in mouth when eaten whole. GAG!!! But there is nothing like the flavor of a homegrown tomato! Fortunately, my husband has a green thumb and grows a garden annually.
Did you try with italian food?
I have found that being a girl means almost anything can make us cry, good or bad. :)
I feel your woe of tomatoes. As a southern girl (from Kentucky) I have felt guilt of not loving tomatoes and iced tea. My mother would eat a sliced (from her garden) tomato, peanut butter and crackers and iced tea three times a day. I've tried to make myself like them but it just isn't there. I do have to say me and mom share the love of a cold Dr. Pepper that burns your nose and makes your eyes water. Oh how we feel confirmed when we are connected with the ones we love, even through food.

FRENCH dressing on taco salad?!?!?!?! Stop the madness!
Add a couple teaspoons of chili powder to a bottle of thousand island dressing. Now THAT'S how to top a taco salad. Try it. You'll love it!
I have 2 daughters - Anna (8) and Julia (6). It warms my heart to hear how much you love your sister and I can only hope my daughters will be that way too as they get older! So glad to hear she is there safe and hope you can enjoy this upcoming precious moments together!
Amanda - you are just so sweet. I just wish I had a relationship like yours with my sister. Sadly, we do not. You and Melissa sound so sweet as sisters.
I don't like tomatoes either. It's a texture thing for me. But my family LOVES them.
And you are right, sweet girl, it's been WWWWAAAAYYYYY too long since you have seen your sister. So glad she made it in!
Praising Jesus for her safe travel. Enjoy her visit home.
Thanks for the Taco Salad recipe, I'm looking forward to trying it out. :o)

P.S. I also like to eat fresh, home grown tomatoes like apples. I used to eat turnips that way too. My Grandparents had the best garden. Sigh... I miss them.
One other thing. My brother is stationed in Hawaii. I haven't seen him in a year and a half. It's awful! We were able to visit him soon after they were settled there, but not since. We call and visit, of course, but it's not the same. I guess my point is, "Boy, can I relate to how you feel."
Take care.
Anna
I totally understand that sister bond. My twin sister and I cry when we have to leave each other. That relationship is a gift from God. I like ot think of him smiling at us when we're together. Or talking on the phone for the fourth time in one day!
Glad Melissa got there safely!
Enjoy your time together :)
Excited for your pictures! They are always so good. Especially new Halloween ones. I'm looking forward to being 80s at the fair tonight.
It's so sweet how much you love your sister! I don't have a sister so I wouldn't know how you feel.
Amanda
I understand complrtely understand the sister thing. Both of our parents are gone and we all live in different states. We go for long periods of time without see each other but generally talk once a day on the phone. However, she has a new job now that is very demanding and I don't get to talk to her everyday anymore. The other day I had to fill out paperwork for my Job and one of them was an emergency contact sheet. I haven't had to do that in a long time and I started to tear up and began feeling very alone. The last time I had to fill one of those out my mom was still alive now I did not know who to put down. I truly felt like an orphan that day. Then I remembered I wasn't alone I had Jesus so I cried to him and he brought me comfort and peace. He is so faithful.

I feel for you but the last time I saw my sister was four years ago at Christmas and the time before that was almost 18 years. Yes we both cried when she arrived in Houston at the airport much to her sons dismay (he was almost 18) It was the first time I had ever seen him as he was born 2 days after we left.
Enjoy all the time you can with your family and never feel you are dramatic about missing them
