Like Slaves in Search of Little Masters
My Dear and Darling Fellow Sojourners, I wish I had all the time to be on here this morning that I’d like to take for this post but I am in the midst of preparing five messages for the Life Today taping this weekend. To say I have some work to do today is an understatement and I bet many of you know the feeling. Our schedules are beyond us, aren’t they, Girls? My heart is so impressed with something, however, that it’s about to burst so I’ll at least offer it in the short version and leave it in God’s hands.
So many of us in this community have been freed from big things. We’ve also, thanks to the persistent, sustaining grace of God, learned how to be on guard against other big things. We know that there’s a life we do NOT want to return to and that our joy, our anointing and our profound effectiveness thrive only when we are dancing free in Christ. But it’s occurred to me again recently how insidious the smaller things can be. If our enemy can’t hang us with one big rope, he’ll gladly strangle us with a thousand threads.
We forget we’ve been set free. We keep returning back to that enslaved way of thinking and living and find ourselves in bondage to a host of little masters. Most of these things are not bad in themselves. Maybe they’re even good. They’ve just taken more authority and attention than they should. I’ve had one of those recently. That’s not true. I’ve had a lot more than one but there is one in particular I became most aware of. It wasn’t a bad thing. Not a sinful thing. It had just become too much of a thing. It had the makings of an addiction and, Lord, have mercy, I’m the last person who needs to open that door again. I had lost the ability to be moderate with it. People can say what they want about whether or not we can hear the inaudible voice of God in our spirits but, as I live and breathe, there I was doing that thing again and I felt Him say, “STOP IT.” Not forever because it’s not a bad thing. In fact, a person would be kinda weird without ever doing this particular thing again. The instruction I discerned from the Spirit was to give it up just long enough to gain back some moderation. Would you believe, as silly as the thing was, that the first few days without it were really hard? That’s how I know it had the makings of an addiction. A week later, however, I felt a full release of joy. It wasn’t even a challenge anymore. In fact, it was a praise and a restoration of time and energy and focus that I could lift up to God. It’s been a month now and my date for having it restored is coming up pretty soon. I feel cheerful about it but, mostly, I couldn’t care less. I could live without it a whole lot longer if I needed to.
1 Corinthians 6:12 speaks to those things that aren’t bad in themselves but have the propensity to enslave us. Those things that I’m referring to, in this post, as little masters. Under the inspiration of the Spirit, Paul reframed a common colloquialism of his time. You’ll see it in quotations in the segment below just as you’d see it in quotations in most of your translations. Paul was frustrated with new believers in Christ who were twisting around the whole idea of freedom from religious laws and using a common saying in their culture to support their carnal appetites. He made a distinction that is the difference between day and night in our daily lives if we’re willing to listen.
“Everything is permissible for me” – but not everything is beneficial. “Everything is permissible for me” – but I will not be mastered by anything.
Something may be permissible that has grown out of proportion until it has ceased to be beneficial. It has taken a place of mastery. Authority. We feel enslaved to it. Maybe some of us can actually go from addiction straight to moderation but most of us have to actually stop the thing for a while to give the power over us time to break. Then, if our flesh dies down about it and we can manage to rediscover that beautiful thing called moderation, we can reintroduce it. IF we will employ the strength of the Holy Spirit within us to command it to behave and keep its place. I’ve had a few other things in my life, things that offered no benefit whatsoever, that simply had to be cast out for good. And, after I could get over those first pangs of craving, I gladly said good riddance.
That’s not bondage to me. That’s not a life of denial to me. That’s freedom. That’s where I’m happy. Effective. Liberated. That's where my arms are loosed to grab hold of all the incomprehensible graces for which I was apprehended. (Phil. 4:12) I don’t know how this speaks to you today but sometimes we in find ourselves in similar places. It’s often not the big things, Girls. It’s that host of tiny masters. Put them back in their place. They've grown from trolls into monsters.
I love you. I’m committed to walking victoriously with you. Let’s remember today that “It is for freedom that Christ has set us free. Stand firm, then, and do not let yourselves be burdened again by a yoke of slavery.” (Galatians 5:1)

Glory glory. It is the little things that get to me. The Little masters. Like food. I cannot seem to get freedom from food! However, that encouraged me so much! God wants to give me freedom from that controlling my life too! And I can't do it. but He can. My redeemer is Strong! Jer. 50:34
Beth,
Thank you for reminding me. I really needed that!

That is a great word!! I will have to meditate on what you said. I know that I have so many little masters in my life. I spend so much time focusing on one that I over look the others until they become monsters. Pray for me that the Holy Spirit will show me the areas that I need to surrender.
Very timely . . . fear can sure fall into the category of monster. "What if, how come, no understanding, what about, unknown . . . etc."
"It’s that host of tiny masters. Put them back in their place. They've grown from trolls into monsters."
AMEN!
May HE continue to bless you with wisdom, courage and peace. May HE keep His Hand upon you. May HE continue to expand your boundaries.
It is a privilege to lift you up in prayer.

Yikes! I'm afraid it could be called "Pumpkin Spice Lattes"...
It's insidious, a taste, a hankering and it's only available at this time of year. Yes, "it's lawful" but is it expedient? AFter viewing the Compassion Vimeo of "Catalyst" and the Jimmy moment, I wonder how many Starbucks I could forego to make a difference in another child that is digging in dumpsters trying to find food to survive?
Help me, Jesus. I heard Him say, "If you don't see it, you don't need it." It's my imagination that gets me at this time of year, and can charge me up to eat some "forbidden fruit..."
Thanks "Siesta Mama" for sharing so succinctly the wonderful power of truth that exposes and defeats the lies and brings it home. Right where I live.

Dear Beth, Amen Siesta Mama! I think of the verse from the Song of Solomon 2:15a "Catch for us the little foxes that ruin the vineyards..." It is the little seemingly inconsequential things that can run amok in our lives causing all sorts of damage. Little by little they hurt and destroy so that we can be overwhelmed before we know what happened. I will be praying for your upcoming taping. I have to tell you that the last few weeks on Wednesdays With Beth the teaching has been on "Thriving in a Season of Chastisment." I have wept at every show knowing God was talking to me through these episodes. I had been so dicouraged as I have been going through this season myself and here you are giving me tools and attitudes to go through it with victory. My eyes are burning with tears as I write this because it has helped to cope these last few weeks and it has given me hope and perspective. God Bless You Beth for sharing God's Word with us in such relevent ways. And Praise God for His timing of such a show. In Jesus' Love Kathy Knoblock
Thank you for taking the time to pass along a Word from God that I needed.
Thank you Beth for caring SO much about us. Praying that God's Holy Spirit speaks UNMISTAKENLY to each Siesta today. Thank you Jesus.
Linda
Exactly what I needed to hear...thank you!
God is so faithful!!!
Beth, if that was for no one else it was for me. God is so good. It is the little things that so often end up tripping me up in the exact way you described. I praise God that he put that on your heart today. He is so amazing. I love Him so much.

Oh Beth,
I can so relate to this one. You are so right about the thousand little threads. And God wants to snip those threads. And it is the little things. The things we say "but that's really not a big deal!" It is a big deal because it leads to slavery.
I keep in my mind what Romans 6:13 says
16Don't you know that when you offer yourselves to someone to obey him as slaves, you are slaves to the one whom you obey—whether you are slaves to sin, which leads to death, or to obedience, which leads to righteousness?
I want to be a slave to obedience the the one who leads me to righteousness.
thank you, thank you for this word. I receive it
Heidi
Thanks for that awesome message for to day. Addictions do so easily creep up on us when we are not paying attention. I found myself really into the Twilight books and movies and actors lately and got just to caught up in this fictional stuff. And I had to pull back and get my priorities straight. Lately, I was able to look the People Twilight Edition Special and not freak out over it. It just didn't move me. God has moved me so much bigger and deeper than that and it's so much more real. I want the real thing now. ~Laurie
Yet again you just nail it Beth! Thank you - you are such a tangible instrument of God in our lives!
Jodi
You are in my head today Momma Siesta!!
I have been fretting over silly little things...yesterday I heard in my head "If you pray to let this go, you will feel better."
I really needed that message, so thank you!
Good morning, Sweet Beth.
Thank you for the great prompt to examine our life for these things.
Will be praying for you and the Life Today taping.

Thank you, Beth.
I don't know why it's the remembering part that gets in our way so many times.
Why we would give up this incredible freedom in Christ for any shackle is not something I fully understand, but... been there, done that.
Am full of praise to our God that has lifted you up and set you free.
I discerned a burden at Deeper Still that has kept you in my prayers every day since.
Keep on keepin' on!
I hear victory in your words!
Thank you for this message. It was divinely inspired. Satan has been busy tempting me with old habits and thinking. I am in the midst of a huge spiritual battle. The Lord called me to prayer in the middle of the night last night and now he has blessed me with your message. Satan was defeated at Calvary and I am victorious because Christ lives!!! Praise the Lord!!
Wow! thank you so much for that word! Much needed this morning!
Beth, this post was sent to me by the Holy Spirit himself! He's been dealing with me on this exact issue, and in fact, I confessed my disobedience early this very morning in my quiet time. Though I was completely confident about what He said to me, your post provided another confirmation. Don't you just love him? He knows me and knows I need to hear it more than once! Praise you, Father!...and thank you, Beth!
Beth, I am on week 7 of Daniel and your message this morning (coinciding with what we're learning in Daniel and Revelation) could not have been more perfect. I have recently moved from Mississippi to Kansas and met a wonderful group of ladies through studying God's word with you. Do you know what's the MOST comforting part? You are the only woman in the room who talks like me! Thank you for the Southern talk. You are my little bit of home every Tuesday morning. I love you.
Can you say "RHEMA"? Thank You.....that's all I can say is Thank You.
Beth, that spoke to me in a loud voice. It is amazing how many tiny threads are hanging around me. Thank you, Thank you!!
Beth! AMEN...and AMEN. Thank you for this reminder this morning. I am thinking even now of a number of threads that need ceasing in my own life. As a Disciple of Christ, disguised as a Professional Organzier, the Lord opens doors for me daily to step into homes to see so many threads in peoples home life that so easily entangle. Galatians 5:1 is the banner over my busines..."do not be burdened by a yoke of slavery..." And they take on so many disguises, don't they? Thank you for this word today! Standing in the gap for you today in prayer from the Sunshine State!

Much love and prayers go with you this weekend Siesta Mama. Thank you for your work on Life Today-you are a "shelter in the wind, a refuge in the storm, a stream of water in the desert, and some shade in a land of exhaustion". You have been and are all these things to me through your work on Life and I am eternally grateful.....
wow, wow, wow....... this resonated with me in sooooooooo many ways!!!!!
Mama Beth,
Only Jesus knew how timely your words would be to me! Thank you for your transparency and insight. I am guilty of letting something take far too much authority in my life. Like you, it's not a bad thing, just has too much power. Too much of a time waster. And headed for something much more sinister if I let it take root.
I was sharing with a girlfriend yesterday about my dilemma and told her the exact words that the Lord said to you that I heard Him say over me, "STOP IT!!" Shook me to the core.
The Lord has a way of putting everything into perspective so that I realize I am a wretch prone to wander without Him being the only Master of my life. Thank you for this timely word and the encouragement that it brings this sad heart today. It's going to be okay because this sinner has been saved by His amazing grace and has all the power I need through Jesus Christ, my Lord, to be an overcomer.
May He give you wisdom and clarity of thought in abundance on your work today for Life Today. What a blessing your teaching on that program has been to me.
Love you much, Shawn
I love that you are so REAL. Thanks for being an encouragement to so many ladies.
Much love.
Thank you, Beth, for this very good word today. It does speak to me. In fact, my pastor has been preaching through I Cor. and came to 6:12 a few Sundays ago. This verse jumped out at me and I knew immediately it was a keeper--you'll be proud of me--I got a 3 x 5 card and copied it down so I could meditate on it. The Lord also gave me another verse and I wrote it on the same card. 2 Peter 2:19b--...For whatever overcomes a person, to that he is enslaved.
I do so desire to stay free and not be "entangled and overcome" in the things of the world. (2 Pet. 2:20) Thanks again for this timely reminder.
You didn't name it but if I had to guess, I would say...she must be talking about coffee! Regardless, it is none of my business and I could pin that one on myself! Love the inspiration you give me to stay true to THE ONE AND ONLY!
This is a much needed and timely message. Thanks, Siesta Mama. You have spoken a GOOD WORD! Glory be to God!
Prayers and blessings,
Rebecca
Oh How my soul rejoices to know that God alone knows when we need something! Thank you for being real and honest enough to share this. Amen and amen, my soul screams AMEN! He alone is worthy!
As a former pit dweller, I can so relate. I climbed out of the pit, but there are little pot holes that could sure become pits if I dwell too long.
Siesta Mama,
You have no idea how much I needed this today! Thank you for sharing it with is all!
Praying for you and all my Siestas!
Love you lots!
Nikki
I am imagining that you wrote this quickly and off the cuff even as it came from your heart- and if that is the case- WOW- what inspired and anointed words. Thank you, Thank you, Thank you. Now, I have to get off the computer as it might just be my biggest little master!
Thank you for this word, Beth! I have just been deciding whether I was going to continue playing Facebook games. Not evil in themselves, but when I look at how many times I've played them, multiply that by the number of minutes per game, and then consider the astronomical result in light of my messy kitchen, slapdash quiet times, and burgeoning laundry pile, I just shudder at the wasted time. But when I tell myself just one more round and then play 5 more, I recognize an addict. To a game! Then the guilt sets in, and Satan has me right where he wants me: stressed from not getting things done, out of touch with God, ignoring my children, and feeling like a terrible person. NO MORE! FB games may not be your addiction, girls, and I'm not saying no one should play them--at least they work your brain while they're raising your blood pressure! But I am not able to keep them in their rightful place, and they are taking over my day, away from what God has for me to do. That is not only an addiction, it is an idol.
Oh. my . goodness!!!! Thank you so much for that Word! Ain't God good? Just what ya need, when ya need it?!?

Beth,
Thank you for this message. It is a timely and relevant encouragement for me right now!
Ruth
Beth, I am on Day 40 of a 40 day fast from Facebook and Twitter. This is THE PERFECT post for me today. A great reminder that it's not necessarily bad until I let it master me. I will remember this as I say hello to Twitterville tomorrow morning and catch myself when I find that I can't live without it instead of just enjoying it.
AMEN! I find that it is the small things that start to trip me up! What a wonderful post - great reminders and a plan of attack!
May the Holy Spirit infuse you with His Words for your lessons this weekend. I wish I could adequately express how much your ministry has impacted my life. God's light is shining through Living Proof Live!
Thank you for that FANTASTIC reminder! Just what I needed to hear today!
Tracie
I needed that Word from God. Thank you!
This is something I needed to hear. I have small things that hamper me . They can roll up into a big ball and can lead to bigger problems. My little things are not bad in themselves but they eat up time that could be used for other, better things.
Amen! And oh how those little things can grow! My "little things" have been not taking care of myself in the ways that I should...probably ever, I never learned it (i.e. not eating the right stuff, the right proportions, exercising, etc.) and now I have 140 other "little things" to lose - they add up! But glory to God and Him alone - I am over 7 pounds down in about 6 weeks and I am thrilled. This is the first time I have understood that it isn't just ME that is on this journey...I am in the company of my Lord and Savior and that is good company indeed! Hallelujah!
Beth,
I so needed that word!!! Thanks for sharing. Praying for you always!
Donna
Mama Beth, sister-friend...I can't not even explain how relevant this is to my heart right now. I'm sure it is more often than not, but I just happen to be REALLY aware of it during this season of my life. Sometimes it feels like I just move from one little master to another-forever feeling distracted and annoyed by myself and the enemy.
I have become so aware of the poverty of my spirit (and gratefully so because I'm more aware of my need for Jesus than ever) and find, like you said, even the good things becoming distracting, distorting, and little masters of my time and attention.
I just want to learn how to love HIM better. Thank you for calling this out in scripture and for your honesty that blesses our hearts so. Love you lady..
Dear Beth,
I needed that word today. Thanks for encouraging us to walk victoriously!
Love,
Dianne
Hmmmmm. . .
I become a slave to a good thing if that good thing becomes too much of a thing. . .
if that thing becomes bigger in my focus than Jesus. . .
if the church schedule gets in the way of having time to sit at His feet. . .
And through your words, again Jesus reminds me of that Word He gave me during the Living Proof Live simulcast from Green Bay:
"DO NOT FRET."
Don't gnaw on
those worries about the future, those concerns over finances, those supposed parenting inadequacies. . .
"Do not fret.
Delight yourself in the LORD."
Delight not as a trigger to make Him give me my heart's desires,
but delight because He is delightful.
Thank you, Beth.
I am actually still trying to find freedom from a big thing. As usual, your post is quite timely. Today I have been contemplating a new approach and had literally just written a blog saying I was going to pray for God to give me a willing spirit to try the new approach. I need to pray a little more but this definitely has the feel of a confirmation for me. Thanks and blessings to you.
Beth, I'm getting tickled thinking you might have had to break free from Starbucks for a little bit! Or some hair-care product!
Yes, that verse has meant much to me over the years ... everything is permissible, but not everything is beneficial. If I would do something to cause a brother to stumble, it's not beneficial. It may be permissible, but it's not beneficial. I refrain from alcohol for that very reason.
I love you dearly.

Thank you for that! I am going to ask God to reveal to me the Little Masters in my life, and to give me the courage to free myself from them.
Great words of wisdom, Siesta Mama!
It is like you have been inside my mind. I had to put something down about a month ago, and it was so hard! I don't even think about it much now, and it feels awesome!
Much love, Becky
Amazing...thank you Ms.Beth for posting this today. I am praying for you.
I love you.
Amen and amen. God has been whispering this lesson in my ear for the last several months. I even had I Cor. 6:12 as my memory verse back in March! Thank you for these timely, God inspired words, expressed so perfectly.
Praying for you,
Kelli
Absolutely...it's the "little things" that seem to be without harm! I think about daily "need" for coffee; but also the seasonal "need" to do this or that in order for a "good" holiday season. Lets remember the REASON for the upcoming holidays, and not allow the Evil One to gain one foot into our celebrations by clouding them with "have to's". Thank You, JESUS for your timeliness in this message to me!!
I'm so glad you took the time from your busy day to share this. Definitely a Word for this girl.
Love you.
Amen Beth!
Just today I received a phone call from my SIL asking what I thought of your book Get Out of that Pitt. Clearly I told her to read it immediately. Believing God and Get Out of that Pitt revolutionized my faith.
Grateful to walk this walk with you!!
Dearest Beth,
Thank you for taking time to share that with us. Like so many others, it is exactly what I needed to hear today.
We love you.

Only God knows how much I needed to hear this today. I almost logged off of your blog because the flesh girl in me didn't want me to read it through, but the Jesus in me needed it. Wanted it and let it sink in. Thanks Beth for just being who God made you to be. He did such a great job. ;)
Thanks for not sharing what it was He dealt with you on too because so many people miss what God has for them and just think "me too" and reality is they don't have the same problem area. So thanks for staying out of God's way on that and just letting Him deal individually with us.
You are such a woman that is all about your Father's business.
Love you,
Lelia
ok this spoke to me so much today . I have so been there. My issue is something that is really good. I love to read especially fiction. but I can so let it consume me and then I am no good for the kingdom. Patty Pierce AR
Amen and Amen to that word.
GLORY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Beth, you just always know what is on my heart. I prayed this morning about this very thing. We live in a world where we have to have things that ultimately do not bring us joy. We find it in the Master. non-fat iced mocha from MCD is my current issue. I am thankful for all of my little masters and that you reinforce (guilt-trip) me into seeing them. All that sugar and I have been so good otherwise on my diet. There are others. Thank you Beth for encouraging me to look at them. Thank you Beth
Little things can become great big, if you let them. Thank the Lord we can depend on Him to help us through. I am still working on having no negative thoughts, trust God for friends, trust God for your security and self-esteem. Ouch! And don't dwell on the past!
Lord, please help focus on You for the things I need.
in Christ I can do all things...Joyce Watson
I thought of this very thing the other day!! But here is the oh-so-weird analogy that came to my mind with the threads. You know when you buy new clothes - jackets, pants, etc... and the pockets are sewn with those weak little threads that when joined together seal that thing shut? That's this kind of freedom! When we break those threads there is a whole new expanse...when we break the threads that are binding us He opens up a whole new expanse for us! Weird that I think like that, I know. Maybe He meant that just for me, but here I am sharing with Siestaville.
I totally understand exactly what you are saying. It's not the "big" things anymore for me (and I pray it never will be again), but it's those small idols that can so easily take over in the place God only wants to be. Thanks for the reminder. The world's standards are not God's so even if it's "okay" in the eyes of the world, that still small voice tells us when it's beginning to take over and it's really not okay.
Becky
I'm right there. I have noticed over the past three days something that has been just like that for me, and have been feeling the Holy Spirit nudging me about it. I'm going to get right on it this very minute!
Father God, thank You for the ministry You have given life to through Beth. Your words, typed lovingly by her in this blog, spoke right to my heart today. I needed this message, and You knew it! I praise You for her faithfulness in listening to You and in sharing Your words with us. With a grateful heart I pray, Amen.
I'm so grateful for the post, Beth. Oh and how I know what your saying. God has spoken to my heart regarding things that were overtaking me. Anything from thoughts to actions; not bad things in themselves, but things I was relying on and looking forward to that began to dictate whether I was happy or not. Thank you for putting into words so clearly what I could not. I'm thankful for and humbled by my Lord who is active in my life.
Thanks for this word today, Beth. It did speak to me and I now have some praying and seeking the Lord to do about what He wants me to do with this.
I am so grateful that I am free from the past big things that enslaved me...those things that caused me to come to the Lord in the first place...and I want to continue to walk in that freedom...but those tiny masters of a thousand threads are always there, trying to trip me up.
Thank you for caring about this community of women! We appreciate you and the words of encouragement you share with us!
The Little Masters.....this is speaking to me bigtime this am....
i am struggling to leave some "good things"....that occupy much too much time and attention.....creeping in to take first place...adn is o wrestle because they feed a creative place in me...forgive me Lord....
Thank you for this today, Beth...i pray He will use these words to chisel away -i have copied some in my journal to flee to...and meditate on. ALso i love your last memory verse....ps119:175 the mssg:
invigorate my soul so i can praise You well, use your decrees to put iron in my soul...
Amen and thank you
Just this month I had several things that were keeping me in bondage. I was addicted to eating and coffee (I too love pumpkin spice lattes at a oh so famous coffee shop). For 17 days I released all of that and I never experienced such a closeness of hearing God-like those 17 days. Then I believe the Holy Spirit spoke word to me that it is finished and I felt such peace and joy. I believe I went thru this "addictions" for several of reasons. One of I find most important is that I can relate to others who are battling it now. I sypathize with me and understand. But With the Holy Spirit-I was able to defeat it! Love to all of you!
Yep, you got me.
I've recently gone through the same thing with EXERCISE. I used to run, first for weight loss, then it gradually moved into races, then marathons, then just full blown addiction. I was "ate up with it". And boy, has it done a number on me! I am just now getting that fresh taste of freedom over it, but haven't gotten the go ahead from the Lord to return to it. And that's ok.
As it says in Song of Solomon 2:15
IT'S THE LITTLE FOXES THAT RUIN THE VINEYARDS.
Thank you, dear Beth, for reminding me that the freedom God offers me through Christ is worth anything. ANYTHING.
Love you!
I love you, Beth! You have no idea the delight you are to me! When I am sharing with others something you said either in workbooks or video sessions or Living Proof events, I often refer to you as one of ABBA's choice servants -- you definitely are to me! I am LOVING The Patriarchs study. And 'little masters'-- I needed that too. Thank you and Holy Hugs -- going back to Day 4 now, week 4.
Thank you!
Thank you for being so transparent with us. This is a great and much needed message.
You are so loved by your Siestas!
Love, Sunni
I feel the same way as DigiNee. Yes fear is the first thing that came to mind for me. That and coffee, which I've had to put in it's place a couple times :)
But seriously I've been looking at this lately and how the Bible commands us to live without fear. Sometimes I am so stuck by it.
Then I find myself asking God "HOW?" and he reminds me the
only way is by constantly seeking him first. Which then brings me to my other "little masters" Ugh!

Beth, these words are amazingly ordained by God for me, and for many others, too.
I'm at the seashore for several weeks, the weather is gorgeous, and find myself sliding into the pit of depression. How crazy is that?
Since God delivered me from clinical depression 15 years ago, I struggle at times when it rears its ugly head. This depression stems from my thoughts.
This morning while walking on the beach, I asked the Lord to sustain me, and not let me go back where I came from. Sometimes the battle is so difficult that I feel like giving it up. I want to be like Mary Magdalene, from whom seven demons were cast out, and stay close to Jesus. He's our only hope.
I have learned when struggling with addictions, and what-have-you, to ask the Lord to help you search deep within to see what the root cause of that addiction is. Then ask Him to replace that deep need with His Spirit. Only God can truly satisfy!
When I came back from the walk and read your post, what encouragement! I'm going to find some scissors and start cutting these binding threads that are beginning to choke the life out of me!
Goodness. Little Masters.
Our family made a huge decision 8 weeks ago to give up a little master and let me tell you...it has changed our life. I'm not sure how long God will have us do this, but we have been changed.
Thanks Beth for challenging us in this...I'm feeling like I need to go get flat and ask the Lord to show me what else needs to go.
Blessings, (and prayers for the taping!)
Stephanie
Thanks I needed to hear that today. I feel like the little things for me are just little pointless distractions that I give into when I start believing the lie that life is just too much and God is just too far to handle things for me. I know that's what it comes down to and I see the little pointless distractions turning more and more into nervous ticks in my daily life. hehe..facebook anyone?
Thank you Beth. That is a a good word. One I needed.
Yes, Yes, Yes and Wow! My first time on this blog and I think I'm going to like it here! Amazed, thankful and humbled at the many ways God can teach and reach us. I am persuaded...
Crazy. God's been having be walk away from something like this lately. It's exactly what you said, it's not a bad thing. But it had the makings of mastering me. I'm still staying away from it for now. Until God says I'm ready, I'll leave it there.
thank you for that. Needed encouragement today!
Yes and Amen!
Just listening to Christian radio as I was reading your post Beth...and the song by Casting Crowns (Slow Fade) is playing:
"It's a slow fade when you give yourself away,
it's a slow fade when black and white have turned to gray."
Then in another verse:
"Be careful little eyes what you see, it's the second glance that ties your hands as darkness pulls the strings."
All I can think about is the word "stronghold"...and it comes in many different forms, big and small, obvious and deceptive. But thank God the Word tells us:
"The Lord is good, a Strength and Stronghold in the day of trouble; He knows (recognizes, has knowledge of, and understands) those who take refuge and trust in Him. Nahum 1:7 (AMP)
May our precious Lord and Savior be the only Stronghold in our lives!
Thank you dear sweet Beth for caring enough to be transparent with us! I sure needed this post today as I have let the "little master" of a certain attitude get a foothold. Praise Jesus that we can put these things once again at the cross and under the blood and step out in the FREEDOM of CHRIST!!
Free Indeed, Free Indeed, Thank God I am FREE INDEED!
Beth, I love you taking the time in your BUSY day to talk to us! It is such a momemt by moment crunch sometimes to get everything done and I so appreciate you for taking the time for us. Wow, so very true your post is. Have a great day,
Love you, karen:):)
Beth, thanks for the nudge. I too have been finding myself gravitating to a particular weakness lately. To be honest I guess a few come to mind!
Thank You Holy Spirit for your work in our lives. Thank you Father for your love and provision and thank you Jesus for being my Saviour, who sets me free!
Love In Christ,
Pam
this was very timely for something our family is dealing with right now. Thank you for the words of wisdom and scripture.
D
Praise god for His voice whispered in our hearts. Oh, that we would listen!
Thank you for the reminder and for listening to God's voice when He speaks to you.
Blessings!
Beth,
I love the line "If the enemy can't hang us with one big rope, he'll gladly strangle us with a thousand threads." I am going to write that quote in my journal. I want to remember it.
I have thought on this very idea this week.
The area that the Lord has been dealing with me this week is with offenses. And, oh, isn't it usually little things that offend us? Just goes to show how much self is in me! He has been working me over in this area ... but my thoughts have been that He is liberating me, healing me, bringing restoration, and that is so good.
Truth applied to my heart is not always a comfort, but it is always for my liberty and good.
Thank you for your post, Beth. I am going to print it and come back to it. There might be another thread that I will need to deal with tomorrow and I would like to have this as a reminder.
Love you, sister!

I logged onto the computer a few minutes ago to do the very thing that has been mastering me, but decided to stop here first. This thing is seemingly benign. Something that thousands of others do EVERY day, but it's become a stronghold for me. I've even promised my husband I'd stop, only to return again and again.
Thank you so much for this. It's exactly what I needed. Logging off now and going to Target instead :)
OK...Am I the ONLY one who wants to ask, "What the heck is it???"
Oh for sure this speaks to me Beth. Thank you for speaking to this. I recognized a few weeks back that I was becoming enslaved to visiting Facebook everyday for over an hour a day when the responsibilities I have in my life clearly do not allow for such an allowance of time to do that. I had it! I said “no more! I’m removing myself from this for a time.” And what you said happened almost immediately…Freedom!!! I hated that feeling of being enslaved to something that was taking away time I could be with my husband, or with my 3 yr old son and over those two things I was sitting on facebook with this voice yelling in my head (or was it that still, soft voice???) that I’m so concerned that I have no time to have devotional time but yet here I am, on the computer. So, enough was enough. I’ve been removed from Facebook for over a week now and although I do miss my “friends”, I’ve become more committed to really “connecting” by talking face to face to a person or talking on the phone. In just a week (!), I kid you not, there has been a change in communication between my husband and I. Beth, I was made Free!! So, right now, I will consider perhaps a moderation in visiting Facebook but I’m far too happy with how I’m feeling now to be too worried about getting back on Facebook. It will happen when I get around to it. And it will definitely be monitored to a very, very short period of time. I will have no hesitation to give it up completely if I recognize it will suck me back into bad habits. Freedom, freedom indeed.
All I can say is "Hallelujah, Amen!" It is the little things that are not bad in themselves IN MODERATION!! Facebook for me was something I had to cut off. I wanted to know what all my friends had to say - off and on all day long, and at work, nonetheless. The Lord directed me to cut that off a while back. And there are other things in my life as well. He is so gracious and kind. I love you, Beth, more than words can ever say. You are such a blessing in my life and the lives of the ladies at my church. We are doing The Patriarchs right now and LOVE IT - LOVE IT - LOVE IT. This is the 3rd study that I have facilitated and the Lord has told me that this is my ministry right now. I want to do everyone of your studies!!! I'll shut up now, really. :)

Thanks, Beth. Like the others, I needed that reminder as well. Life just gets so busy and we don't recognize what we become a slave to. I need to take inventory!! Love you!

Dear Beth,
I'll be praying for the taping this weekend. Thanks for taking the time to share these thoughts with us.
Much love,
Adrienne
OMGosh, Beth. You talk about providence... I have a source of addiction in my life right now that is sucking all the time I have for my family away. Just last night, I told my husband that today will be a 'no computer' day for me. (I say this pertaining to home, as I need the computer at work). Reading your post, however, makes me think maybe I need to give it up for a littl while longer.
Thank you for speaking the truth...
Beth -- you amaze me! Wisdom like that so early in the morning! Hope you have a blessed day getting ready for your packed weekend. God bless you richly and supernaturally expand your time to allow you to accomplish all you need to!
AMEN!!! Sister AMEN!!!
Speak Beth, speak. How encouraging to hear the testimony of the great cloud of witnesses surrounding us. I find myself in the same place, so your words are of great encouragement in a season of struggle to let go. Thank you so much for those words of life and of encouragement, Mama Beth.
Thank you, Beth! I needed to hear that today. I was thinking about you this morning, reflecting on something I'd heard you say recently that God used to speak to me. I'm thankful for you and thankful that you speak a timely word when He gives it to you.
I never dreamed that my ipod would become a stronghold!! I had to stop "shopping" and downloading. I had to delete TV shows that weren't good for me. It's embarrasing that something so "innocent" can become dangerous for me.
AMEN AMEN AMEN!!
Thank you Beth for your continual inspiration and kind, thoughtful and convicting words. I needed that!
You are a blessing to many.
What a timely word! And, I got to hear about it twice! Our leader talked about this in devotions this very morning! God is so good and faithful! I better pay attention!!!! :-)
My husband calls these things the "little foxes."
SOS 2:15
Catch for us the foxes,
the little foxes
that ruin the vineyards,
our vineyards that are in bloom.
Thank you for your transparency and for loving us enough to speak the truth in love. I needed this.
Love you dearly

Thank you so much Beth!! I have been so blessed by your ministry lately in the book of Esther with a small group Bible study. We are learning so much!
This is a great reminder. I thought of something immediately that I gave up a couple of weeks ago. I have slowly allowed myself to go back, but it does not have the hold on me that it once did. Praise the Lord for EVERY victory, big or seemingly small!!
Love ya!

Beth,
Thank you for what you said and reminding me that we need to give our little things to God.
We can not do this on our own. He will give us the strength in him.
I will be praying for you

I totally identify with your issue and have a bunch of the same type of things in my life.
Thanks for sharing, Beth. Hoping it wasn't coffee that you gave up! :)
Dear Beth,
Thanks for put the Word out to us, even when it isn't an easy one to receive. Praying you have a blessed day as you prepare your messages!
Mammybeth
Little masters! Like you said in the Daniel study I did this morning that at some point Nebuchadnezzar had stopped running Babylon and it began running him!!
I see this in myself with my blog and my Twitter account even. sometimes I have to walk away from it - it is a huge part of my life and indeed has opened up many doors but I think of the woman I saw last year who was supposed to be flying a kite here at the school with her son and instead was talking on her cell phone while he struggled and cried. That little master kept her away from her precious child.
It makes me look at the little masters in my life - even my itouch I have to put down sometimes -- talk about a little master.
Thank you for your words and best wishes with the filming and remember to take time for you sometimes. Moses' burning bush wasn't consumed because it was God burning in the bush - but if we go with human laws and are burning ourselves and not in the power of God, we too will be consumed. Keep it about him.
THANK YOU!!!
Can barely type through the tears. I was just talking to God this morning about a "little thing" and asked Him to guide me. Your post spoke LOUD & CLEAR!
Praise God for His messengers.
Ok, so God REALLY wants me to get this. I heard the verse on Lysa TerKeurst's blog this morning and studied it in this past week's homework in our Priscilla Shirer study. Earlier today I thought about making a note card with the verse on it to keep in front of me and decided not to do it. I will go directly from this post to get it done! Your message was exactly the one I needed to hear or hear again :o) Thanks for the encouragement!
Hi Beth,
Thank you for not revealing the "tiny thread or little master." My "now word" this morning concerned God's relating to His children as the individuals we are. Legalism is a door through which I don't want to walk - don't want to even go near it EVER AGAIN! Had you said what even one of your tiny threads were, I might have been inclined to think, "well if she has to moderate that area, then I need to as well." This may not make sense to anyone, but I just want you to know this sister appreciates your discernment.
I pray for you, your family, and the ministry of Living Proof often.
Much love,
Patti Hayes - Lutz, Florida
"If our enemy can’t hang us with one big rope, he’ll gladly strangle us with a thousand threads."
Oh how this speaks straight to my heart. There is a "not so bad thing" in my life right now that has moved to a place of mastery. A place of strangling. I needed this today. Thank you. I needed to know that there are things I should step away from for a while until I get to that place of being able to walk in moderation again.
And thank you for confessing you have had this issue, too. Your honesty makes it easy to receive His correction through your mouth. :)
Love this! I can relate in so many ways. There are definite things in my life I have had to let go of entirely because they serve no purpose in my life. And then there are those things that, while not bad, become a little too important. They begin to grab hold of me little by little and before long I am enslaved to them. And I do not want to be a slave to anything but my King! Thanks for sharing these thoughts this morning!
Oh my goodnes...I could have written that most myself. It's exactly what I've been dealing with lately. "Ironically", this is the 2nd time THIS WEEK that the Lord has thrust that verse in front of me. I get it, Lord! He has really been teaching me this thing, and He's making sure that I really get it this time! Thanks for your transparency, Beth!
[In the spirit of little Jackson Jones vis a vis some Texas Chocolate Sheet Cake] "Cooooooke. Coooooooke. Coooooooooooooke."
As an Atlanta dweller, I'll take "the real thing" any day over Pepsi, but for the last 32 days, I've been carbonated-and-sugary-goodness-free. I was practically ashamed of how hard it was to give up such a "simple" pleasure. Another month and I'll be able to imbibe again, but for now its the purity of water until I can live with some moderation.
Seriously though... we have some odd little masters. Forgive us, Father, for choosing such foolish things!
thanks for putting that out there. i really do struggle with the little things that suddenly become big things, and have often been told I am too hard on my self."that everything is permissable", but "everything is not beneficial"..I want the beneficial for the Kingdom, and is certainly okay to just say "i think not today".. love ya and praying tons for you Princess!
TRUTH. The Holy Spirit is speaking through you to me and for this I am thankful. I have been struggling with giving up something that is NOT bad or wrong. But as you said, I believe it has become addicitive in my want of this. 40 days. 40 days without coffee starting tomorrow...because...well...I have already had my morning americano! ;) Thank you for being obedient with what our Jesus is urging you to share.
My heart has been grieved for a while because I have actually allowed a person to become a "little master" in my life. Oh, how I have embarrassed myself. And yet I continue to seek out her approval...her attention...as if because I think she is special, any attention from her makes me special. What a lie from the enemy.
This woman has a blog...and I realize after reading your post today that maybe I need to stop going by her place for a while. I learn a lot from her, BUT I cannot make her an idol in my life.
Oh, Beth. I feel so embarrassed at how I have jockeyed for her attention. So embarrassed.
Surrendering,
A heart thankful for this post
I love that the mouthpiece of the Lord is so real - and obedient.
Thank you for this - it is something that the Holy Spirit has been impressing upon me lately...
Amen & Amen.
WOW! Thank you Beth for such a word of truth. I 've been praying concerning these very matters of slavery to the little things that somehoe they have snowballed into one huge addiction. It wasn't a BIG thing it was those small, even unrecognizable things. Help me Lord to hear your truth and believe it and then shout it to my soul thatyou have come to set me free!" It is also helpful to see from these posts here that I'm not the only one that has such struggles. Love ya Carla
take the shackles off my feet so I can dance!!!!
I had one of those "little masters" moments a couple weeks ago. I was in my quiet time, and praying, and the Holy Spirit just clearly spoke in my mind, "Bev, you are doing 'that' again. It's time to cut it out." I found myself actually justifying (for just a minute or so), "but, You and I have conquered such BIG stuff, and now we have to do this???" "yes, baby girl; it's time. Let it go. You need Me more than you need 'that.' "
I must confess, I was ready for a big struggle and wanting and craving. . .when I repented, I made the decision to stop because God told me to, and. . .no craving; no battle. I was overwhelmed with God's mercy in just delivering me from a pattern which could easily have become a stronghold. He is "continuing that good work" He has started in me, and will keep working! (Phil 1:6)
I am afraid mine is the anxiety I am walking in His will for sure. Joshua 3-4 really is speaking to me once again. Heard it a few times the message itself and it's the whole courage thing. I am afraid that I am definitely the cowardly lion at times. Sometimes I just have to literally take a deep breath and just take a step. So I hear you. Anxiety, worry, uneasiness... I have a job transfer out of state that although it all seems like I am in Gods will I just have allowed my own flesh to make me feel those bad feelings. So at the moment I have allowed myself to feel scared to death... With no reason. Stupid little micromasters!
P.S- I hear Gods inaudible voice, every scripture memory verse has been spoken to me by Him. And it usually is one that will apply through entire week.
Great post, Beth. I'm sure that "Little thing" that has become too big of a thing is so different for each one of us. I love it when God pinpoints to me an area that I need to reavaluate or step back from because I don't want to be mastered by anything but my love for Him.
Wow! Beth, it is the little things.Your words impacted me. I need to look at some of those things in my life. Sometimes it just feels so overwhelming. Like I want to run the other way. Away from God, Away from the little things, but I go running back to HIM!

Beth,
Thank you for taking the time to post this. I am also dealing with some "little" things. I am grateful to God that I am having some teeny weeny victories lately with some issues concerning my mouth.(which is not so teeny weeny, hence the problem). The other day I wanted to share something with family, but felt God saying,"No", so I literally put my hand over my mouth to keep from saying anything. It felt good knowing I was obeying God.
Praying down multiple blessings on you for this weekend! Have an awesome weekend! Joan
Thank you Beth for this timely and Spirit led word for us today. I believe this speaks to all of us. I praise God that you care about us so much that you would share this today when you have so much on your plate. Oh that we would not let these little monsters steal our promise land from us. I only want what is beneficial for the glory of God in my life. Time to regroup!
Love ya!
Thanks so much for taking the time to share this post. It is so easy to let that "little masters" creep into our lives without us really realizing. Old habits just fit right in our lives and we have to take the power given to us by our redeemer/heavenly Father to take control and turn them over to God the Father and let Him change and mold us into His creation one more.
Thanks again

Sunday evening, i decided to take a break from something and also have been sensing the urging of the Holy Spirit of the same thing you have spoken, yet, your words here articulate greatly what I needed to hear. I am greatful that the Lord has us walking together, all us Siesta's and the body of Christ as a whole so we do not weary and we can exhort one another toward godliness...I dodn't know you were going to be in the area for the taping this week, didn't get the option to get tickets this time..(insert pouty sad face here)but I hope to come to a taping soon, I love sitting under the teaching of the Word in such intensity, it's awesome and fuels my spirit so much...Have a wonderful weekend..Tiff
Wow... I'm floored, although I don't know why. I know our Sovereign Lord teaches us by repeating a message (so my hard head can get it) but.... WOW.
I just recently decided to go back over my "Breaking Free" workbook again... not to be freed from large things, but from the smaller things that seemed to be entangling me and tripping me up. What a perfectly timed message.
Now I'm going to let Jesus use it to oust those "little masters" in my life.
Thank you Jesus!
I'll be praying for you & the taping this weekend.
Blessings,
Anna
Amen, Beth, well said!
Completely understand. This is the exact Word God gave me when a certain coffee house became an addiction! I had to give it up for over a year!!

I absolutely needed to hear this today Beth. I love you for so many reasons, not the least of which is the way you always offer encouragement in whatever you are sharing.
Thank you dear heart. He uses you in such a special way.
God healed me of melanoma. I had stage 2 on my arm and it did not spread throughout my body.I praise the Lord!! But, it did change my lifestyle with tanning. I am a lilly white blonde. People in church would even say how white I was and why don't you use lotions. So I did for a while and one day God spoke to me loudly and told me to STOP. When I had color I had a different confidence that came from something else other than what God had for me.I dressed differently and felt really good about myself in how I looked with a tan. So I stopped and God has done a wonderful work in my life and I have such a peace. I'm whiter than white. But I have a peace like never before. In fact I glow in the dark. This is what God wants for me and I have to be obediant. God is good!!
It is hard to catch the little things. I am working on a "little thing" right now. Trying to exhibit moderation.
A verse from my study this week is John 3:30, "He must increase, but I must decrease."
Absolutely this spoke to atleast one person today: me. I have the addition to food that just gets me all side-tracked and like a crack head. Seriously. I'm an emotional eater on top of it, so as a woman going through infertility via a gestational carrier via an egg donor - I'm about emotional as I'm ever gonna get! I tell ya. It's been a tough journey. Food is comfort for me. It is a release even. I hear the scriptures calling out about gluttony and it pangs my heart with conviction. I know food in and of itself is needed and certainly not bad, but move on to gluttony and emotional eating and there we have issues. I'm trying to give in to the Holy Spirit and give it up, but I'm struggling. Thank you for speaking again on this bondage to things unneccessary.
So glad you've posted this today for two reasons, Beth.
One, I have been doing the same thing and a reminder and prod in the right direction are so encouraging!
Second, I had a bad dream about you on Saturday night. I woke up and went to my knees for you and asked the Lord that the dream would never come true. I tell you this just to let you know that you have so many praying for you, Beth, for this weekend at LOI, for your family, for your health and concerns.
You are so dear, that God brings you to mind in dreams to pray for you! :)
Little Masters....well put...AND they ARE little masters!! About a month ago I heard the Lord do the same thing but in regards with Diet Coke. I actually heard him in my spirit say "No More Diet Coke!!!". I can't tell you how many times I have quit and took it back, quit, back, quit, back...And forgive me Lord I didn't quit right away when you said too. I have been free for about 3 weeks now...but I was getting fully addicted. I don't know if I could ever go back to a place of moderation with this because I have done it SOOO many times....I really need to get free from this first..maybe moderation in a year.
Thank you Beth. I need to go back and re-read this a couple more times.
Two words: Face. Book. I had to completely get rid of my account. Of course that's a very public "thread" to cut so people immediately began asking "why". I had to share exactly what you put in your post. The Holy Spirit was just saying, "No." Obedience in our house is only obedience if it is quick, quiet, truthful and complete. Ouch. No more facebook.
Beth,
I am in week 2 of your Breaking Free series. I have been praying over the past couple of weeks for God to reveal anything that is holding me captive. God has already revealed to me some big masters that I need to surrender to Him and never pick back up. Thank you for this post and for reminding me to look for any little masters in my life as well. When I get through with this study, I don't want a single thread holding me back from the abundant and effective Spirit- filled life God has planned for me. Thank you for ringing the liberty bell!
Nelli
Funny the things you remember out of the blue...this post took me back to being a little girl and always seeing 2 liters of Diet Dr. Pepper in our refrigerator. My mother was constantly drinking Diet Dr. Pepper and had to have tons of it in the house. Not necessarily a bad thing, but the situation definitely wasn't a good one. I don't know what it was that broke her of the habit, but to this day I can't tell you the last time my mom had any kind of soda product (she much prefers water, tea, coffee cooler or fruit juice). I'll have to ask her what it was that brought that habit to a grinding halt.
Thanks so much for the word! Honestly, I'm realizing more and more than this unbelief I've had is stemming from so many "little masters" as you say. Hang-ups about family members-in-law and their role in this, overcoming the shackles I was born into through prior generations' sin, and constantly battling the unbelief of the person at the root of my own unbelief (say that five times fast~ I know it's confusing but that's as deep as I want to go here). So many little masters keeping me from experiencing that fullness of freedom. It's a great perspective, and I'm thankful God laid it on your heart today. I needed the reminder!! Thank you! :)
'If our enemy can't hang us with one big rope, he'll gladly strangle us with a thousand threads.' So profound. Yet I'm still so easily ensnared! Thanks for this exhortation Miss Beth.
You are right, we are often at the same place. Thank you! PS- started the "turn it around" section of Esther today - good so very good!
If our enemy can't hang us with one big rope, he'll strangle us with a thousand tiny threads... Wow. So profound! Yet I continue to get ensnared. Thanks for the exhortation Miss Beth!
Thank you for that timely Word.
Melana
Thanks, Beth.
Thanks for the reminder. Been struggling again myself recently with the little things that draw us away from the only good thing in our lives. Jesus Christ.
I needed this more than you know. It is a ginormous smack upside the head ... but one that I am so very thankful for!
Bless you Mama Beth!
There was this little girl
who was scared and so very afraid
She hid her feelings inside her heart.
She wanted so much to feel love. She wanted so much to feel wanted, to feel secure, and so she kept hoping. Sometimes, she would cry herself to sleep at night not knowing why or what was wrong.
Then, one day this little girl ask Jesus into her heart. Jesus promised to take care of the little girl__to give her hope, to help her feel secure and He wanted her. He held her at night. Jesus loved her as His own. She grew up to love Jesus more than anything in the world. Jesus is her Redeemer, her Savior and her Lord.
This little girl knew freedom for God was all had to make her stronger and She held on to Him forever.
First of all I am praying that you'll get all five lessons finished and hear an incredible and powerful Word from the Lord. Secondly, I can relate to your post. I have done that very thing with coffee, TV, and a few other things. When I fast the thing then I regain my freedom to be balanced again.
Awesome word of encouragement!
Thanks Beth, for listening to God and allowing Him to use you. Sometimes just a reminder like this one can make oall the difference in a life..
Love Ya Siesta

Praises Be! I needed to hear that today- I cannot seem to get enough done during the day - Praises Be for the fresh Word. Man, I love you!
Facebook. Ouch.
Thank you Sweet Beth. What a great word!
I've been wrestling with a prompting in my heart to to give up certain shows on TV I've been watching that might be permissible, but are in no way beneficial. This really helped to solidify that in my heart and hopefully writing this comment will be one small step to help make this more of a reality in my life.
Love to you!
Beth,
Thank you so much for taking time for this post. It is definitely in the smaller areas that I am most afflicted. It's one little thing after another that I barely take notice - until -they have snowballed into so much that I'm completely overwhelmed and then I just shut down...overloaded and short circuited.
On a tangent...in a strange way, I've been thankful for your personality of addiction and a little OCD. Hear me out. :-) I see how you are so addicted to God: how you have to have Him, how you hold so tight to that personal relationship, how you crave His Word. It makes me want to want that as much as you. It drives me to stay in relationship with Him because I can let other things pull me away and that's when I get in trouble. It reminds me that I need to continue to learn more about us (Him and me) by continuously being in His Word. At any rate, I am overjoyed and get giddy when your Jesus addiction spills over to a whole huge HFBC sanctuary of us, learning and growing in Him. Thank you, God, for keeping Beth's addictive personality in check so that her only addiction is her freedom in You.
Thanks for all you do - and I know it's a lot. And I'm so thankful for the audience that can be reached through Life Today. Happy and blessed you are on Wednesdays. Have a God-overflowing, life-changing, wisdom-gaining, rocking great time!
All I can say is "thank you."
Gulliver! That's the image I keep seeing. Gulliver being tied down by the Liliputians with many, many little threads. None of them able to hold me down by itself but many together immobilize me and I'm simply stuck in the mud and muck.
I needed this. More than you know.
Thank you Beth, for being you.
I can relate. I had to cancel Facebook because I was getting consumed with 3 farm games. I had to think when to plant, so I would be here to harvest the crops, in just 3, I repeat, in 3 short weeks. Seems silly now, but I saw it as a huge addiction brewing in my head. I already have a smoking stronghold & I'm so glad I saw the innocent games as a new threat. Bless you for being open to share. Real is what we all need to hear & I thank you. Charmaine.
Can I relate! I have had to "distance" myself several times from "things" that start taking over my thoughts and priorities. Not bad things, but none the less, continue to creep in and grow until they become big enough that I would arrange my day around it. I needed to hear these words again today, everyday. Thank you for being so real and not holding back on what God is telling you to write.
Amen siesta!
Betsy
I loved what you had to say today. I think it could apply to any one of us, but something is bothering me.... I know it's none of our business about what it is you were talking about, BUT being the writer and teacher, I think it would be so much more helpful if you were more specific and just said what it was so we could better relate. I think it probably took more time to "dance around the issue" than to just say what it was...or is. I love you, Beth...I truly do,and I have never been touched by a teacher like I have you, but sometimes your evasiveness about just saying something is frustrating to me. I guess specifics helps me more and helps me to relate...as if you DO know how we feel and what we are going through...big or small. I'm sorry, I don't mean to sound harsh...I really don't...just frustrated.
2 things come to mind on this.
The first is the whole "Trade your bondage, keep your chains" frustration you mentioned at the ministers' wives conference.
The second is all of the spider webs floating through the air this time of year (at least in TN... I don't know what it's like elsewhere). It seems like I can't even walk down the street without encountering a randomly long thread of spider silk that once served a very useful purpose. Now it is just drifting aimlessly through the air. And no matter how hard I try to avoid it, I always seem to get tangled in one. My daughter, the other day while riding her tricycle, became so preoccupied with trying to avoid a thread of spider silk that she nearly crashed right into a brick mailbox. Your "tiny threads" statement made me think of that. Isn't that so like the devil to preoccupy us with the things that seemingly don't make a difference in the grand scheme of things, only to look up and find ourselves heading straight for a wipe-out that could potentially lead to severe injury?
"If our enemy can't hang us with one rope, he'll gladly strangle us with a thousand threads."
Oh that is so true. And yes how insidious the smaller thins can be. Amen to that!
Thank you for the encouragement.
Praying for your Life Today messages and taping.

I canNOT believe God's faithfulness to be IN MY BUSINESS right now. I'm currently doing your Breaking Free study with my small group, on week 2, and just today watched yesterday's show from Life Today about "living victoriously in a season of God's chastisement"; you were wearing a fuschia and black striped jacket & skirt; awesome, awesome teaching!!!
He's been meeting me so much thru your teachings going back a few weeks even to "knowing when you need rest" and when you said, "girlfriend you need a concentrated dose of God and get away by yourself to be with God", I did it! I left my husband and son, with permission, and went to my parents mountain cabin for 3 days and did some serious business with My Abba!!
Anyway, the more I say NO to those "little foxes of sin" the more freedom from them I feel.
However, in the last week, I've returned to one of them; no, two of them. And I've noticed hearing more of the enemy whispering lies in my ear and the more self-doubt I have to resist the temptation.
Just today, after I had caved in again, I said to myself, "I'm not ready yet; I don't have the self-control built up enough to have moderation with it, so lay it back down again girl, that season isn't up yet."
Yielding to my flesh isn't worth the negative feelings that go along with it just for a few minutes of pleasure and comfort.
Thank you God for being around every corner I turn, speaking YOUR TRUTH to MY EXPERIENCE equalling FREEDOM.
I love you Lord and I love you Siesta Mama!

I totally relate to what your saying and I have identified some of those small things as well. For me, a thing like facebook (which can be a great tool to keep in touch) I have found that I give it more time then I should. I am going to reel it back in to a reasonable thing.
Oh Beth, I really needed to hear this. I have been spending more time on the computer lately (I go through seasons - then I hear God telling me "STOP IT" and I do). Lately, I am back on - wasting time. Not anything BAD, but not the best use of my time. Not when it takes the place of time I could be having with God or my children. I have been sooo hearing Him in my spirit - telling me to back off, and come back - to Him.
I totally get you Beth. There are a few of these little masters in my life...not bad things, but when I am doing them, even in moderation my Spirit is not comfortable.
I too think these things are going to have to be given up for a period of time, until I no longer feel drawn to them...
Thanks so much for this post... I get it... See you soon :)
Thanks Beth.
I needed that today.
A lack of something had recently began to be a little master.
I'm fighting against it with the power of His Spirit and truth living in me. And since I have,I was reminded, once again, that I am [one of] His favorites.
Deep sigh of gratitude.
Praying for your preparation
An afterthought:
Song of Solomon 2:15
"Catch for us the foxes,
the little foxes
that ruin the vineyards,
our vineyards that are in bloom."
Praise be to God. Thank you for the reminder.
Just hope the thing you were instructed to stop doing wasn't bathing. LOL
Seriously, there are hundreds of things that can take over our lives now days. We must be ever vigilant.
Anon 3:52, I totally get why you feel frustrated. Sometimes I feel that way about unspoken prayer requests. You and Beth just happen to have the exact opposite outlook on this. Know that you are loved and appreciated today!
Thanks so much for taking the time to share that with us siestas!!! Such great words of wisdom. Just wanted to tell you how much I am loving your Esther study. Our group watched video 6 today (the one with the chiastic structure...I kept thinking, "If only I would have had a history teacher like her, maybe I would have done better"). :) 2 of my 3 sisters are doing the study with me and at the end of the video we were all crying....POWERFUL!!! Just wanted to thank you for obeying God and teaching others!! You're the bomb! :)
Amen! You have spoken for me today exactly what was in my heart during my bible study today (A Women's Heart).
Those little things sure can become large time consumers and take our focus and time off of being "relevant Christians in our generation".
Thanks so much for blogging today even when your so busy!!!
Beth, You really spoke a Word to me today. Just as I was starting to wonder if I was becoming enslaved to exercise, this morning as I *just started* my workout I twisted my ankle. Hurt so bad my husband took me to the doctor. As I lay on the couch after it happened I wondered if God was trying to get my attention. Your message seems to confirm it. Yes, even those "good things" can hold us captive. I"m breaking free! Much Love to You, Sister.
Beth,
I need posts like this! Thanks so much for taking time out to share this with us. This is a keeper for sure!
Love,
Fran
Thanks. I'm struggling again lately with a monster I'd thought I'd beaten.
Thank you for the reminder to be very aware of EVERYTHING that is going on in our lives. We must constantly evaluate them to make sure that NOTHING takes God's place in our lives!

Thank you Beth,
You are my spiritual mother (I am only 2 years older than Amanda) and I thank you for the insight today. And I feel like you sat me down as any God-fearing mother would and said girl get yourself together. This little thing is becoming big and you better get control before you are out of control.
Thank you!

"If our enemy can’t hang us with one big rope, he’ll gladly strangle us with a thousand threads."
I have had a year that feels like it has been delivered straight from hell. My daughter passed away, my son is struggling with addiction (and poor baby, it is driven by anxiety and depression...all compounded by his dear sister's passing). My sweet youngest son....oh he is having his own difficulty. Through all of this I have stayed strong in Jesus! I have been strong in Him, fairly calm, able to do anything that will help my family, aggressive in seeking help for my family...I am driven to see my family survive AND thrive. I *KNOW* it will be okay...I know that Jesus will make a miracle all in his dear Father's time.
Yes the devil is trying to hang me with a rope and a thousand threads...but...I stand on the firm ground of the Lord. Siestas I woud so appreciate your prayers.
xo
So I am guessing the little master wasn't crispy bacon! Seriously, thank you for this reminder to be on guard from those little things that creep into our lives and take our attention away for the Lord. May you be blessed as you teach!
Oh my goodness... that was straight from the Lord to me! I felt like God had spoken to my heart about giving up one of those "Little Masters" in Memphis... and all day today I was trying to justify taking it back! Then I click on this blog!
I LOVE you Lord! : )
For me - it's TV! A hideous little monster. Thanks for the word!
To Amanda from Anon 3:52...
I appreciate your thoughts and comments, but I think (in my mind) that the unspoken prayer request is different. If someone asks you to pray...no details...I still consider that a privilege to lift them up. God knows the details and that's all that is necessary. What I was trying to say about Beth's blog was that SHE is trying to make a point..to teach..to share..and I just think it would be better understood if she could be specific so that we can relate. I am not good at expressing myself, so I apologize if this comes across poorly. I do love and appreciate her so very much!
Praise the Lord for these words!! Just have been convicted today of the spirit of bondage created by fear that has snuck back up and really overtaken me. Great verses for me to claim. Glad to know we are all in this together with One bigger than any issue.
WOW- you must have listened in on my quiet time today. I am giving something up fo awhile just because I don't want addiction to creep up.
Thanks for the post.
Dearest Best:
I receive this.
God love you - what a timely word.
Your friend and fellow sojourner,
GJ
When my "good things" take a turn for bad, my husband always tells me (in his best Darth Vadar voice) that I have gone over to the dark side!
Always a good reminder.
Thanks for sharing your wisdom with us again!

Wow, some big things have been knocking at my door, but I have been aware....however after reading your post I went through all my "Favorites" on the computer and deleted a ton of stuff...may sound silly, but I've heard His voice saying "Stop It" for a while...Thanks for the post.
To Anon at 3:52
Some things are better left unsaid. Instead of focusing on what Beth may or may not be wrestling with, choose instead to pray against the enemy's attempts. I know her life seems perfect and that it can be hard sometimes to relate to someone who seems to always have it together. But recognize that these perfect gifts have come to her through constant prayer and seeking her Heavenly Father. Beth has been blessed because of her faithfulness to God and His calling on her life. If you are struggling with something, I encourage you to turn to Him for the example, not Beth. You will in turn be richly blessed in ways you cannot even fathom.

You know, I've struggled for years with the alcohol. Glad so very glad to have almost 5 months of sobriety (Oct 28th) Yes, this is big and with the clearing out of the alcohol and soma and now weaning off of the xanax, I've come into contact with some deeper feelings/issue that have been buried. I pray I will have the courage to face the issue I have ignored.

I read something a few wks ago in "My Utmost for His Highest" that resonated with me in a life changing way: "Every time I obey, absolute Deity is on my side." WOW. "...I have banked everything on the Atonement and my obedience is met immediately by the delight of the supernatural Grace of God." He is so Worthy.
Thank you for sharing your obedience to His Voice and what it looks like to have absolute Deity on our side.
Love you.
I know EXACTLY what you mean. There was a time that I was addicted to watching the old 80's murder mysteries on TV. I'm serious--if there would have been a support group, I would have needed to join.
"Hi, my name is Jennifer and I watch the old 80's murder mysteries--"Murder She Wrote", "Matlock", Simon and Simon", etc... ".
I am, by no means making fun of anyone that has more serious addictions, but I'm here to tell you that there was a time in my life when I structured my whole day around watching these shows.
I had to, like you, just cut it out for a while. I felt that the Lord really showed me how much of my life (both thought and physical) that it was consuming.
It seems so silly now--I don't even care about them any more. But, I can see clearly how the enemy was using that as a MAJOR distraction and time waster in my life.
Praying for you and every one else's freedom from these little nit noys.
